Polly started to regret having promised the Romulan commander to care for her children while she and the crew of the USS Hanson were embarking on an extremely dangerous training mission. The oldes of the five - Polly had taken a while to remember the girl's name was Kahlan - kept her distance and remained fairly quiet but the second oldest girl was tough to get along with. When Tony Marcell as around, the four-year old wouldn't budge from his side, and when Tony was not around, the girl wouldn't stay away from Polly.
"Yarna let go of my leg!" Polly sighed, while disentangling the girl from her left leg, "go play on the carpet for now. I'll get you supper soon enough. Kahlan please amuse your sister, I have chores to tend to."
Kahlan had nodded mutely, had taken her younger sister by the hand and led her away from the visibly frustrated teenager. Polly was at last alone with the triplets and she watched the youngest of the three, Jayvee if she remembered correctly. His greenish teint still looked somewhat off but at least he was happily smiling about now, while earlier he had been wailing so loud Polly had believed she'd go deaf from the amount of Decibels the infant was producing.
She had barely gotten the boy into clean clothing when TJ came home. Her smile brightened as she saw him walk in. "Salek released you at last!" she exclaimed, putting the boy down and flying towards her husband, flinging her arms around his neck. "Oh I'm so relieved to see you well again." She took his hands and led him towards the couch, then gave him a gentle shove to put him down onto the seat. "Tea?" Without awaiting the answer, she dashed into the kitchen and came back with a freshly steaming pot of Earl Grey tea.
"How do you feel?" she asked after a long silence, pulling young Kyala onto her lap, amusing her with a small plastic toy. "I hope the Hope children won't be too busy for you, but I made Commander Hope a promise and you know I try to keep the promises I make." She fell silent and it was obvious to TJ that something was on her mind and she was afraid to bring the issue up.

It was still a bit difficult, but with the assistance of a cane for added support until he regained full power to his leg which had been injured in the attack by the wraith on his last mission aboard the Hepta, he was able to get around. Dr. Salek had told him he'd likely be on that extra support for around a month's time, provided all went well.
Things moved quickly as he entered his quarters, now shared with his wife Polly. A quick embrace, followed by his being led to the couch, where he was shoved down, and then the young lady – for he was forced to admit she was now doing all she could to qualify herself as such, and he respected her efforts to that end – scurried off to retrieve tea he had not especially wanted, though upon her return, he did take it and drink, finding it surprisingly tasty. Still, as she mentioned the keeping of promises, TJ's mind would return to the ordeal she had put him through two or three missions ago, and this would bring a quick frown to his face, a frown he wished he could control, since his feelings toward Polly were beginning to warm.
He noted Polly's reluctance to speak freely, and decided to probe.
"'Tis noticin' I am that somethin' is troublin' ye. An' just what might that be?" he asked, trying his best to seem pleasant.

Her cheeks reddening, Polly glanced away as she put Kyala back down on the floor. Yarna was now vying for her attention and she pulled the second oldes Hope child onto her lap for a moment, before setting her too back down on the floor. "Amuse your sister," she told the child, before uncomfortable shifting to face her husband.
"I.." she started, then fell silent, looking away again and glanced at the five children playing close by. "I know what I promised you," she started again, "and I stand by it. I won't ask this of you unless you wish for it yourself. You haven't touched me, with which I am content also..."
She faltered again, gazing up at TJ with shining eyes, hope flaring in them. "I would want children some day Thomas," she finished, "but I promised I wouldn't ask that of you and I won't. But..." This time she sighed and felt horribly miserable. "I would love for that child to be yours." She held up her hand to silence him. "Please, let me finish. I would love to bear your child, but we made an ageement and I do uphold that agreement. What am I to do Thomas?" She looked up at him again, pleading.
She prayed he would hold her, comfort her, but so far he hadn't done anything beyond the kiss on the cheek or the thank you for a lovely dinner made. He was courteous and a perfect gentleman, he never mistreated her and for that she was grateful considering her own mistreatment of him. She had noticed a change in him for the positive in her treatment of her, but she dared not hope for more.
Polly slid from the chair to join the children on the floor, after serving her husband another cup of tea. "Dinner will be ready soon," she added, changing the subject, "would you mind keeping an eye on the children while I finish up in the kitchen?" She rose to her feet, after hugging each child with great care. The children laughed, tugging at the hem of her skirt, trying to keep her with them.
"Have you heard anything from the Hanson? I've tried contacting Commander Hope to tell them how her kids are doing....but I'm not getting any response."

“I know what I promised you,” [Polly said], “and I stand by it. I won't ask this of you unless you wish for it yourself. You haven't touched me, with which I am content also...”

He was courteous and a perfect gentleman, he never mistreated her and for that she was grateful, considering her own mistreatment of him. She had noticed a change in him for the positive in her treatment of her, but she dared not hope for more. There was no doubt about it – this was an uncomfortable moment. TJ still was finding it nearly impossible to be affectionate with his wife, and it was only in the wee hours of the morning, when sleep came with difficulty, that he noticed his attitude towards Polly was softening in the slightest.
But softening it was.
He could see she wanted something, but he could not bring himself to embrace this woman. There was still too much distrust and anger.
He said nothing. ”Do what you’re needin’ t’ do, Polly,” he said. “I’ll watch th’ wee ones.”
TJ watched the children pull at Polly’s skirts, and a small smile broke. For a moment, his eyes again twinkled as they hadn’t done now for some time. The picture was attractive, even if the woman was Polly.
“’Tis nothin’ I’ve been hearin’ o’ them,” he called after her.Straightening himself out as he arrived at the door to the quarters of his future Commanding Officer, Captain Edwards - John took a deep breathe and pressed the door chime and awaited a response. At the sound of the chime, TJ made his way to the door; it wasn’t hard – the children didn’t hang on him as they did on Polly.
He opened the door and faced the young man standing there.
“Good evenin’ t’ ye... an’ just how might I be helpin’ ye?”

The doors opened and revealed a 6 foot man, John hoped he had gone to the right room. If not he was going to be horribly embarrassed. The man spoke with an Irish accent, originally being from Ireland this interested John greatly.
“Good evenin’ t’ ye... an’ just how might I be helpin’ ye?” Asked the tall man
“Good evening’ t’yee Sir, I’m looking for a Captain TJ Edwards. Would that happen to be you?” John asked
<Tag TJ>
Outstretching his hand he offered it to his future CO, whilst saying “Commander John McFarland, pleased to make your acquaintance. I’ve been assigned to the Starbase as an Engineering Instructor and I am to serve on the USS Hepta. Admiral Drew suggested I came along and introduced myself so here I am.”
John said with a smile, with Captain Edwards shaking his outstretched hand. “You don’t mind me asking but are you Irish?”
<Tag TJ>
“Yes, why not” John replied, after being invited in to join Captain Edwards and his wife. He followed TJ into his quarters which he thought were very spacious indeed. John noticed a woman and several Romulan children this struck him as odd...

Polly never noticed the twinkle in his eyes as she had her back turned to him. She disentangled the children from her skirts and told them to go to TJ for amusement. As one, the children tore off in TJ's direction, though it was mostly the three youngest ones that vied for his attention. Kahlan and Yarna remained quietly behind, amusing themselves for a little while.
The teenager couldn't blame her husband for the lack of answer to her hopefully asked questions. There was no answer to give from his perspective and she had known all along never to expect an answer to it. It didn't mean it was altogether impossible though, and she would have patience.
She returned from the kitchen when she heard voices in the living room, then smiled to see that they had a visitor. She followed their guest's gaze to the five children now playing peacefully on the floor in the livingroom. "They are not ours," she smiled as she walked forward, waiting for TJ to introduce her. "They belong to Commander S'reena Hope, Hanson's first officer. They're on a dangerous mission so she left her children with us to watch over."
She extended her hand to their guest as TJ introduced her. "You may call me Polly," she grinned as TJ had introduced her by her entire given name, "less of a hassle to remember isn't it." She looked at the wooden spoon she still had in her hand. "Are you joining us for dinner? I've enough on the stove to feed an entire army of hungry men!" She flashed a coy grin at her husband, for he sometimes could have quite an appetite.

Captain Edwards introduced his wife, who the approached John extending her hand to John. "You may call me Polly" she grinned as TJ had introduced her by her entire given name, "less of a hassle to remember isn't it."
“Yes, yes it is. Thank you, Polly. I’m John McFarland, so I suppose you can call me John.” He chuckled nervously, smiling at Polly.
“You seem like quite the young housewife with that wooden spoon in your hand, it almost reminds me of my mother when I was a kid.”
Polly looked at the wooden spoon she still had in her hand. "Are you joining us for dinner? I've enough on the stove to feed an entire army of hungry men!"
“That is very kind of you, if I am not going to be an inconvenience. I would love to stay for dinner. What’s on the menu?” John asked
<Tag Polly>
“That sounds wonderful, I’ve not had a home cooked meal in a few months now.”
Himself and Captain Edwards had now made their way onto the sofas in the living room of the Captain’s quarters. John was very curious about the Romulan children (although they did not look full Romulan), the younger children had trailed after Polly like she was their mother but Kahlan just stared at John. This was making John a little uncomfortable.
“So what are the Children’s names?” John blurted out, hoping to avert the attention and gaze of Kahlan.

“Good evening’ t’yee Sir, I’m looking for a Captain TJ Edwards. Would that happen to be you?” John asked. “’Tis right ye are,” the Irishman responded to his visitor.
TJ forced a smile of greeting. As their hands pumped in greeting, TJ answered, “In part I am. ‘Tis me dear old mother that came from th’ shores o’ th’ Emerald Isle, an’ a portion o’ me family still resides there. An’ you... is it a wee bit o’ th’ brogue I’m detectin’ in your voice?”

They liv’ back in Ireland now the’re both retired you see.” John then changed back to his very proper duty accent but he couldn’t hide his Irish twang: “It’s a rare thing to find a fellow Irishman in the Fleet. I only really use my Irish accent when I’m back home in Dublin. If I use it when I’m on duty people tend just to look at me blankly like they didn’t understand what I said.” “So how long have you served as CO of the Hepta? I hear she is a good ship, with a good crew.” As both of the men sat down on the sofas in the living room.

Alex wanted a few words with Captain Edwards hoping things were going well. She was very bored being on the base like she was and wondered what else she could do. The report on last mission and the status of the ship were finally put on padds, and she felt it was a good idea to take them to TJ.
She was walking toward the captain's quarters and noticed a Klingon outside, and she smiled for the first time in a long while remembering a certain Klingon from a few mission prior. She wondered if this was just another cadet realizing she would have to ask him to move to let her pass by.
"Excuse me, I need through. The captain desires these padds before dinner, or he might have me scrubbing all of this deck with a toothbrush," Alex said mostly kidding about the punishment. Suddenly the Klingon turned toward her and she looked up into the eyes of someone she didn't expect to see any time soon.
"Well, this certainly is a pleasant surprise. I hope things went well where you disappeared to. What are your plans?" she asked as she rang the chime to be admitted.

John had just asked TJ about the Hepta and how long he'd served as CO as the door chime went. TJ sprung up to answer the door and John was left sitting with the young child called Kahlan.
"So you are Kahlan then...?" Kahlan just nodded but kept her eyes fixed on John.
"So what do you do for fun around here?" John asked hoping to get some sort of response.
"We chase Polly around and cause mischief" Replied Kahlan with a big smile
"Mischief eh? I remember when I was a kid, I used to run around causing havok for my parents."
As John continued his conversation with Kahlen he noticed Captain Edwards invite a large Klingon and a small young woman with blonde hair. Both were in StarFleet uniforms and John wondered if they were his fellow crewmates of the Hepta. John moved across the sofa and waited to be introduced.

Kahlan climbed on John's lap and sniggered up at the tall Klingon as he approached. Yarna squeeled and ran towards the Klingon, hugging his leg tightly. "Where's Tony?" she querried innocently, referring to Anthony Marcell, who had visited the Hopes only a few weeks ago.
Polly returned from the kitchen, frowned at seeing K'ratak and Alex, set down her tray with the teapot and cups, then disappeared into the kitchen again, all without saying a word. She returned seconds later with two additional cups, and a little caraffe containing a dark reddish blue liquid. She put those down on the table as well, then silently disentangled Yarna from K'ratak's leg.
The teen remembered both officers well, and didn't quite like them. Certainly, they both had no reason to like her, but she preferred to stay away from them as much as possible to avoid any old memories from resurfacing on the wrong moments. "Tea anyone?" she finally spoke up, nodding towards the caraffe. "Mr K'ratak, I have prune juice for you if you prefer. Freshly made, as I quite like it myself and I have used some to make a prune pie that should be ready in a few minutes."

K'ratak: Was caught off guard just a little to see alex so soon, he knew that he would run into her sooner or later but not this soon. He kept looking at her when he caught what she was saying.
"Excuse me, I need through. The captain desires these padds before dinner, or he might have me scrubbing all of this deck with a toothbrush,"
Smiling alittle and trying not to laught." Well then I know just the chair to sit in and watch you you accomplish this little trick"<tag alex> Hoping she would take it as a joke. He side stepped he last question about where he had been when the door opened and they entered.
Looking around the room he saw another officer and not wanting to be rude introduced himself. "I'm Commander K'ratak on loan from the klingon imperail feet and you are?" <Tag McFarlan>
He noticed Polly entering the room with what looked like some tea. He noticed she was not too comfortable with both him and alex there and understood why. Trying to put her at easy and to try and put her off guard " Its a pleasure to see you again Mrs. Edwards under better conditions I hope you are adjusting to married life well" <Tag Polly>

Alex chuckled. "You better not sit in my chair, I just had it reapolstered. It is good to see you again," she said smiling up at him. They were admitted rather quickly.
She noticed Polly the moment they stepped into the room. She observed the young woman working and realized that the offered drinks were tea or prune juice, both of which Alex never drank. She smiled knowing that she should be polite to the captain's wife.
"Good evening, Captain and Mrs. Captain Edwards, I hope all is well. I don't mean to bother you, but Captain Edwards requested these padds as soon as possible. I will just drop them off and be on my way," Alex said hoping for an invite to stay, but not showing her feelings or making any indication that she would like to do so. She handed the padds to TJ, and then turns to leave.
"K'ratak, I look forward to seeing you later on," Alex said and moved to the door.

"I'm Commander K'ratak on loan from the klingon imperail feet and you are?"
The klingon approached John and introduced himself, John smiled and stood up and offered K’ratak his hand. “I’m Commander John McFarland, I’ve just transferred to the Academy and will be assigned to the Hepta as Engineering Instructor.”
“So what is it you do within the Academy K’ratak if you don’t mind me asking?” John was trying not to be rude but was curious about K’ratak being on loan from the Imperial Fleet.
<K’ratak>
K’ratak shook his hand vigorously after explaining his role at the Academy, John noticed the young woman leave some PADDs and head for the door.
“Excuse me…” He called after her.
“Commander John McFarland, I’m pleased to make your acquaintance, I’ve just been transferred to the Academy and eventually the Hepta when she is up and running. I’m to be the Engineering Instructor.” John had found himself saying this for what felt like the 17th time today.

… "So how long have you served as CO of the Hepta? I hear she is a good ship, with a good crew." As both of the men sat down on the sofas in the living room. "Sure, an’ it hasn’t been very long I’ve been in command," TJ answered. "An’ ‘tis a good ship she is indeed, with fine officers, but many are bein’ reassigned while she’s in repair." … "Good evening, Captain and Mrs. Captain Edwards, I hope all is well. He preferred that she would stay, considering he wasn’t comfortable in the presence of Polly as yet. Additional company might help to alleviate that discomfort for the evening.
"Wait," he called after her. Alex paused and turned back.
"Might I be persuadin’ ye t’ join us for dinner?" he asked.

Alex chuckled at the Klingon's remark and shook her head. "I won't be needing it just yet, but if I do I'll just borrow yours," she said and smiled sweetly. She was about to head out when the other man stopped her and introduced himself.
"It is a pleasure to meet you. I am Alex Nikmud, First Officer of the Hepta. I look forward to serving with you," she said wondering how to leave without offending the man. She was a little uncomfortable, especially with the Klingon's eyeing her from time to time.
"Perhaps we will run into each other in the future," she said and was about to bow out again. TJ called after her and approached as John moved to talk to someone else. He asked his question, and she smiled observing the look he had in his eye. She looked over at Polly who seemed to be a little uncomfortable herself.
"You might, just so long as your wife doesn't try to stab anything but dinner," she said, only loud enough for him to hear, making a small joke. She chuckled a little, and hoped to keep things as light as possible. They moved to join everyone else.
"Polly, you look positively radiant today. Did you do something to your hair?" Alex inquired hoping it would help the other woman to relax a little.

Polly nodded in silence, still quite daunted by the Klingon's fierce presence. If there was anything she still feared, it was a Klingon. From the corner of her eyes she kept track on Nikmud, and seeing her disappointment she was about to ask her to stay for dinner, when TJ beat her to it. Meanwhile, K'ratak was still trying to hold on to her attention.
"You may call me Polly, commander," she answered politely, "and I would indeed like us to remain friendly and forget about the past. Well not forget, but I would request that we not speak of it again."
(K'ratak)
She watched TJ converse in hushed tones with Nikmud, and apparently one of her comments made him smile. No doubt it was a snide comment about her, but Polly was determined to ignore it all and just make the best of it. She felt uncomfortable enough as it were.
Then, to her utter horror, Nikmud came over to her, smiling amiably.
"Uhmmm," Polly started, blushing deeply. "Not really?" She glanced over to TJ for help, but he merely gave her an encouraging nod before turning back to McFarland. "However I have been very busy in the kitchen, and like I told Mr McFarland only minutes ago, I have enough food to feed an entire army. So any more souls that are in need for sustenance are quite welcome to join us for dinner. Did I hear correctly that Thomas just invited you?"
She motioned towards the tea pot, then saw Nikmud's frown. "Can I offer you anything? It seems to me you neither like tea nor prune juice."

"You are correct, he did just invite me to stay for supper. I can think of one person you probably don't desire, well her and any pranks. I hear a certain Commander 1st Class is on the rampage again looking for ways to prank those on the base. I guess she is trying to get someone's attention higher up, although I don't know why," Alex said still smiling trying to be as friendly as possible. She wondered if K'ratak being around was what made Polly seem nervous, and thought she might shoo him away with a comment. Nothing was coming to mind just yet though.
"No, tea and prune juice just don't sit well with me. Just about anything else nonalcoholic would be just fine. K'ratak, I belive our captain needs to be informed of something. He mentioned Klingon mating rituals or something else Klingon that he wasn't completely sure of when a cadet asked him last, from what I heard. You might want to go ask him what exactly that was all about so you can explain for the next time," she said and it seemed to work. Alex chuckled and shook her head.
"I'm sure TJ will pay me back for that one. I look forward to it. I thought he might be making you nervous, and if I do I don't mean to. Relax a little, and tell me what I can do to help with dinner. One of my philosophies is what happens in the past stays in the past. Let's look to the future with us being friendlier at first, and maybe as friends later in life," she said hoping it would help the other woman relax and realize Alex wasn't there for revenge on something that happened what seemed like years ago, even though it was just a couple missions prior.

“Ahhh, well I look forward to working with you K'ratak. I hope you can teach me some of your Klingon traditions and culinary delights. I have never tried any Klingon food, I’ve spend most of my time in StarFleet R & D and working around warp cores my whole life. I’m looking forward to the new challenge.” McFarland responded to K'ratak, the klingon seemed very outgoing and friendly for a Klingon!
John had a look around the room, everyone seemed to be getting on well. John did feel a little uneasy as this was the first time he had met these people, he hoped he was making a good impression. John then briefly met the First Officer of the Hepta, Alex Nikmud. She seemed very nice, however John could see she was trying to leave, just then TJ grabbed her attention and invited her to stay for dinner.
John walked over to talk to Polly who he had noticed seemed slightly uncomfortable. John first asked Polly if she was okay and then offered his assistance in the kitchen:
“Are you okay Polly?” John asked slightly concerned
“Would you like any help in the kitchen? I’m curious as to what is on the menu” John smiled, hoping to get Polly’s mind off whatever she was thinking about.

K'ratak: He could tell he was making Polly feel uncomfortable which he hoped would pass in time but for her part she answered him and looked in the eyes' which went along way with him
"You may call me Polly, commander," she answered politely, "and I would indeed like us to remain friendly and forget about the past. Well not forget, but I would request that we not speak of it again."
" Fair enough we all have things we would like to forget for awhile from time to time. I'm sorry if I make you feel uneasy around me. I will try to give you a wide birth until you feel more at easy. We can't change the past but we can change the future and hopefully in time we will get along just fine."<Tag Polly>
Walking away to leave he turn back to McFarland " I will be happy to explain any customs of my people you would like to learn and introduce you to any foods that you make have questions about. I look forward to working with you when the time comes." <Tag McFarland>
Turning to face the captain " I shall be around when you have need of me sir I did not mean to intrude on your quite time" <Tag Edwards>
Before leaving he walked over to the replicator and had a Klingon tooth brush made. Picking it up we walked back to Alex and gave it to her. " I don't think you get the deck very clean you might take the paint on" Laughing he walked to the door.

"I will be happy to explain any customs of my people you would like to learn and introduce you to any foods that you make have questions about. I look forward to working with you when the time comes." Replied K'ratak
"Thank you K'ratak, have a pleasant evening." John replied as the klingon headed for the door.
John noticed K'ratak handing Alex a knife type thing with bristles... apparently it was a klingon toothbrush. John cringed at the thought of brushing his teeth with one of those, as K'ratak chuckled and headed for the door. John assumed it was some in-joke that he was not privy too but whatever it was it looked funny.
John turned back to Polly and waited to hear about what she had cooking...
