(O.O.C Don't worry, we've all been busy)
Melain halted just in time as the tree truck struck the path ahead of them. "Don't just stand there, Frek, we've got to keep moving, or we'll lose them!" she yelled above the noise of the storm.
"It's alright, we haven't gone anywere." Carerra called back. "Commander Steve says the rocks are just ahead!"
Frek and Melain clamerd over the slippery trunk and joined the rest of the away team. They stumbled and slipped their way through the rocks untill a cave mouth was discoverd. "It's small, but I'm sure everyone can fit through. I think the cave is fairly large, but I can't tell till we get inside." The Commander dropped a stone into the mouth, and heard a satisfying clunk noise soon after. "Not too deep either, but be careful anyway."
One after another they slipped into the opening and landed on the cave floor. Climbing out would not be too difficult, but there was a slight drop before the floor. Melain could barely see a thing, the only light came from the outdoors, which was dark itself. She could here the sounds of a tricorder and assumed Steve was checking things out.
"We'll need a light, who's got a light?" Frek asked.
"Here, we'd better not use these to much, there's a limited supply of power." Zhukarak activated the light on his rifle. "Carrera and I both have spares as well as the ones already on our guns."
The light revealed the cave to be a cavern about the size of a small crew quarter. Two tunnels lead off in oposite directions, but one was closed off from a cave in.
"So what do we do now?" Melain asked. "Call for help?"
"The storm may interfere with our signals, but it is worth a try." Commander Steve tapped his comm badge. =A= Nevada, this is Commander Steve, do you copy?=A

OOC: Sorry here too. I’ve just been unusually unmotivated to come up with anything.
While Cmdr Steve was trying to communicate, SSgt Carrera and LtCol Hrisvalar were looking around their immediate surroundings. Zhukarak Hrisvalar noticed the two passageways. One caved in and one passable. The open passageway in the back of the cavern would have to be scouted before they settled in.
The away team was drenched and they needed heat. Zhukarak noticed a decent sized boulder in near the middle of the cave. He was doing mental calculations. It was about one meter in circumference probably weighing in at about four hundred kilograms. “Sergeant Carrera, give me a hand here. Everyone else step back please.” The two marines adjusted their settings on their rifles and took aim. Their weapons discharged and after a prolonged period of time the boulder began to glow with a reddish-orange intensity that gave off heat as well as a little light.
“That should make us a little more comfortable.” Zhukarak proclaimed. Frek seemed delighted and surprised. “That’s a pretty neat trick. They teach you that in the marines?” SSgt Carrera took the lead in replying. “Marine survival training, sir.” They all huddled around to get dry and stay warm.
Zhukarak noticed the lack of replies to Cmdr Steve’s inquiries to the Nevada. “I’m guessing the combination of the cave walls and the storm outside our communicating with the Nevada will not be successful.” “I suppose you’re right, Colonel. Let’s just settle in and get dry.” Cmdr Steve halfway ordered. Zhuk, together with Jason Carrera, opened up his field pack and pulled out a ration pack for everybody. “These should hold us over for a while. Commander, I’m going to go ahead and check that passageway. I don’t want any surprises.” “Alright. But keep it to fifty meters if it seems to go further. If there is anything in there past that I would think it’s far enough for us to not be disturbing it.”
Zhukarak acknowledged the order. Sergeant Carrera was getting ready to come along when Zhuk ordered for him to come after if he didn’t return after thirty minutes. With everything settled, Zhukarak went on his way to scout out that passageway.

Post by Harrias Jira on Jun 3, 2005 23:57:52 GMT
With a start, Harrias leapt off the sofa he had fallen asleep on, and was standing, his feet slightly apart, and his hands defensively in front of him. He spun, unsure of exactly what was happening, but wary, watching for anything. Slowly, he pushed the sense of danger away, and became aware of his surroundings. He was still in his quarters, and there was most certainly noone else around. However, there was a flashing light next to his door. Someone was chiming – requesting access. A glanced down at himself, and pulled his undershirt until it looked neat.
“Come.”
As soon as he had spoken, his voice commands unlocking the door, it slid open, and a young security ensign rushed in. Ensign Sawara, the trill remembered. He had only joined the crew recently, but it had been at the express wish of his father, a man who had served with Harrias on the USS El Salvador. Captain Jira looked at the young Chinese human officer, and wondered if he would ever get to see his father again.
“Sir. We have lost contact with the away team. There are storms rushing across the whole planet.”
The trill’s mind was jolted away from it’s mellow, and all too suddenly made aware of his responsibility and duty. The away team was lost. They were lost. Dammit, everyone was lost. Without a thought to his uniform, and not even thinking to put shoes on, the trill raced to the bridge, his dignity coming second to his duty. As he stepped inside, he turned to the operations officer.
“Mr Jenkins, what can you tell me?”
The New York native looked up from his console. “About seventeen minutes ago, we started picking up a drop in pressure across the atmosphere of the planet. Shortly afterwards, from being a calm and empty planet, we witnessed storms with three times the strength of any seen on earth.”
“Ion storms?” The ginger haired trill asked, knowing that Ion storms were particularly dangerous, and could come on with little warning.
“Surprisingly not Captain. As far as we can tell, other than the intensity, these are simply normal storms.”
Frowning, Jira moved around to the operations console next to Lieutenant Commander Jenkins. “Is there any indication that these are a regular occurrence?”
“We can’t tell sir. As we can’t penetrate the storm, we can’t tell if there are signs of this happening before.”
“Dammit! What are our options people.”
Silence descended onto the bridge, and the frustrated commanding officer turned slowly around, taking in each officer in turn, challenging each with his eyes, asking for some kind of solution. No one spoke. His turn complete, the trill made no further motion. But inside, in his heart, and in his soul, something died. He was failing. He had taken a ship out, with a new crew, a youthful crew, and he had got them lost. Somehow, somewhere along the line, he had failed them. He looked around the room again, and saw that Grace had entered, unnoticed.
Slowly he walked up to her.
“I have failed Grace.” He plucked that black pip from her collar, and replaced it with one of his won golden ones. “You are in charge now.” Before she, or anyone else could say anything, he stepped from the bridge, and left it, as the turbolift accelerated away.
When he arrived back at his quarters, he locked the doors, and moved over to his drinks cabinet. Pulling a bottle of Saurian Ale from it, he uncorked it sullenly, and took a long, deep swig.

Grace stood facing the turbolift for a full minute while all around her the bridge crew began reacting to this new crisis. At least Grace felt it was a crisis as she has never and will never want a command. "What is he thinking?" she thought. "There is nothing I can do at the moment for Harrias, I have to help the bridge crew through this VERY temporary turn of command"
She turned to the crew and began by making a speech. "I would like to assure all of you this is only temporary. The Captain is needing a little time to sort through a few things and will be back with us once he is ready" and under her breath she said "I hope". Grace continued addressing the crew "Now, if someone could, please get me up to speed on what is happening on the planet, I would appreciate it."
LT Commander Jenkins began explaining about the storm on the planet and sensors not being able to penetrate it.
"This may seem like a silly question, but what about communications?"
Jenkins replied "We have tried, sir"
At the address of 'sir' Grace said "Please, I would prefer Counselor, Commander or Grace. I am only in command temporarily. I like my black pip, no gold ones for me!" Grace began to think, then said "Alright, continue trying to break through the atmosphere with sensors and communications to locate the away team. In the meantime, Lt Commander Jenkins, you have the bridge. I want an update every half hour."
"Excuse me, Commander, but where are you going?"
"I am going to have a little talk with the Captain and knowing him, this may take awhile".
That said, Grace stepped on to the turbolift, but halted the lift midway. She had not been this angry with someone in a long time, not since Clade. That Section 31 agent who has tried to take the Nevada twice. But now was not the time to remember him or her anger would increase. As Counselor, Grace knew she needed to get rid of her anger or this conversation with Harrias would go extremely bad, or would it. Maybe she should shake him up a little by being angry with him. She knew he was angry with himself. Blaming himself for our situation, she could use this to her advantage, she hoped. "Resume turbolift" Grace was ready for a battle with the Captain, it could cost her his friendship but it would be worth it, if it helped him find his confidence in himself again.
o.o.c. Sorry! I have been busy as well. By the way I think this could be a very interesting mission, now that I have had an opportunity to read it!

Steve sat in the cave shivering, he was almost on top of the heated rock but it didn't really help and he could see by the faces of the other officers that they felt the same. They were all soaked through and from experience he knew that if this storm lasted for any amount of time they could all become ill and that wasn't an option. Steve looked up and spoke to everyone "Listen up people, I want you all to remove your tunics and lay them near the fire, we need to get dry and wearing a wet top wont help." Everyone took their tops off leaving them with damp but not soaking under top. "That's better." Steve said with a smile "What do we do now commander?" Frek asked. Steve handed him the tricorder "You are going to see what you can do with this and try and find out if there is anyways to communicate with the ship or try and work out when this bloody storm will stop." Frek nodded and Steve removed his comm badge and started fiddling with it.
A few minutes past and it neared the 30 minute mark that Zhuz has set. There was a noise behind Steve and they all quickly looked around, Carrera lifted up his rifle.
Off: Same with me, this is a busy time of year with exams and all, mine start next week but i will do my best to find some time to post. I agree with you Grace!

Rex was still vast asleep when the voice of the senior operations officer sounded through his commbadge.
It took the lieutenant several moments to notice what was going on, due to the fact that he hadn't slept this well since ages.
"Lt. Bonar...Lt. Bonar...please report to the bridge...Lt.Bonar"
Somewhat grumpy from being disturbed in his sleep, Rex answered the call.
"Allright...I'm comming up in a minute"
Since Jenkins's voice didn't sound too stressed out, Rex took the time to take a really quick shower and changed his uniform. 2 minutes later he walked out of his quarters all fresh. His mood had been lightened by the shower as well.
On the bridge Lt.Cmdr. Jenkins briefed the CTSO of their current situation. Rex took his station, and started to look at the data.
"They'll probably will be allright", Rex tried to lift the spirits. 'That is, if Frek doesn't get hit by the lightning', the lieutenant thought to himself.
"I know lt.", Jenkins concurred with Rex, seeing through his meager attempt at the spirit lifting thing. "But please start looking for solutions"
"Aye sir", Rex replied with his head already looking at his console.

Having removed her tunic Melain was beginning to feel the warmth of the red hot stone begin to dry her off. What a perdicament they where in, a handful of StarFleet officers helpless against the wheather. They all sat or stood in a circle around the only source of heat each trapped in their own thoughts, most likely thinking about the past days' events.
Melain did not want to think about their crews situation, or her own involvement. All she could bare to ponder was the fact that a young crew, with it's young captain and it's even younger CMO was stranded far from home and only with a miracle would they ever see their homeworlds again. Then Frek coughed and Melain was brought out of her thoughts and into the reality of the cave. "Is everyone alright?" she asked taking out her medical tricorder, she should have checked the rest of the away team over when they first found shelter. Officer's didn't always like to report and injury, but on a strange planet even a small scratch could easily become something worse.
"Sargeant Carrera, I believe it has been 30 minutes since the Major went scouting." Melain pointed out.
The Sargeant looked at his Crono. "Ah, so it has. If I also do not return come looking for us armed and as a group."

Frek stared after Carrera, who disappeared into the darkness of the caves looking for his superior officer. “If we keep losing people in this rate I’ll be left on my own in ninety minutes,” Frek calculated somewhat pessimistically. He gave the tricorder another try before giving up with shrug. It was hardly any use. The handy little device was not calibrated to function as portable meteorology station. And with the storm still raging on furiously it was little use going out and try to get in contact with the Nevada. “Sir, I think the combined efforts of the storm and the shielding of the rocks are making a good attempt at blocking any signal going in or out,” Frek reported. “That’s not what I wanted to hear Mr Thelev,” Commander Steve pointed out with a barely noticeable sigh. Frek shrugged his shoulders again, not his fault. He felt a nasty tickling sensation his left nostril. With some effort he managed to suppress a sneeze and coughed gently instead. He shuffled himself a little bit closer to the fire, trying to warm himself a little more. He felt the sleeve of his uniform jacket. With some luck it would be dry in half an hour or so.
“How long has it been since Sergeant Carrera left?” Melain asked, breaking the silence. Steve checked his chronometer. “Twenty minutes. I hope he’ll manage to find Colonel Hrisvalar. This is not the time for more complications.” Frek nodded in support. He didn’t feel like going into some dark holes which were known to swallow up Starfleet officers. “Carrera said we should go look for him in a group and armed,” Melain noted. “Yeah,” Frek sniffed, “But the thing is, they have all the weapons. All we’ve got is Commander Steve’s phaser.” He let out another cough followed by a sneeze he didn’t manage to suppress. “Are you sure you are all right?” Melain inquired. “Nah,” Frek tried, “I tink I’m geddin a col’.” He pointed at his nose. “Ids stufft.”

Grace was in front of Harrias' door. She chimed once, and waited, no reply. She tried the door chime again, no reply.
The one thing Grace had in abundance was patience. She would wait him out but she wondered if the crew have that kind of time?
After some deliberation, Grace decided that the crew was in need of the real Captain. She touched her comm
=/\=Counselor Mitchell to the Captain=/\=
No reply. "Come on Grace, did you really expect him to answer" she said to herself.
Grace looked around, the corridor happened to be empty. Something she hoped Harrias didn't know, Grace began to pound loudly on the door and shout at it "Harrias! Open this door, immediately. Since you have made me Captain, I am now your commanding officer and I order you to open this door."
Nothing. "Well, it was worth a shot" she mumbled.
Grace decided to try a different approach "Harrias, I could open this door with my mind if I wanted to, but it would be better if you opened it, you might not have a door left" she shouted.
Nothing
Grace decided to try pounding and shouting again, but just as her fist was in forward motion to strike the door, it opened. Unfortunately, Grace's fist connected with Harrias square in the chest, he stumbled backward and fell. She ran over to see if he was alright and noticed the faint smell of alchohol. He was out cold!
"Now what do I do?" Grace wondered. She covered him with a blanket, he was too heavy for her to lift. Went to the door and disabled the lock on it. She also ordered the computer to alert her when he was awake.
Before Grace walked out the door she said to the prone Captain "You and I are going to have a talk, so enjoy this rest while you can, Captain!" then she left and returned to the bridge.
Grace stepped off the turbolift to notice Rex was on the bridge "I am glad to see you Rex. Would either you or Leo like to be Captain for awhile?"

Having finally recieved the information from Star Fleet, Lotrai quickly grabs her things and heads for her shuttlecraft. It isn't long before she is in the air and heading to her first assignment, the USS Nevada. She is excited and nervous at the same time. She has never served on a ship before, and looks forward to the new challenges ahead. She has been a hermit all her life, and doesn't know if she can live with others, but is willing to try. She smiles at this thought, and turns her mind back toward navigating the shuttle.
She has been traveling for several hours, when all of a sudden she notices a vessel in the Andromeda Galaxy. She wonders what they are doing there, and decides to make a little, well maybe big, detour on her way to her new assignment. She gets closer dropping out of warp to a complete stop. She scans the ship to find it is nothing she has ever seen. She opens a channel to them.
=/\= Unknown vessel this is the Aquadic class vessel Tryneu. How may I be of service to you? =/\=
She gets an answer immediately.
"Identify yourself." A voice says over the channel, and she looks up to find a man staring back at her. She isn't sure exactly what to say, and then notices the uniform.
"Sir, I am Lotrai, the new engineer to the Nevada. I hope to help you in any way, and then I must report in to them." She says not aware that she is in contact with her vessel. The man chuckles.
"Ensign prepare to dock, and welcome to the Nevada." He says chuckling still and shaking his head. Then the image disappears, and she realizes this is her ship! What are they doing way out here? She thinks, and sees the shuttle bay doors are open. She lands the craft easily, and then opens the doors to a welcoming party.

"A cold is something easily taken care of." Melain replied as she took her medpack of her shoulder and looked for her hypospray. "Let me know if this doesn't help." she intstructed pressing the hypo to the CNO's neck.
"We should go and see what happend to the Marines." Commander Steve decided, getting up from where he sat. "I'll stay in front with the phaser, Frek take the rear and Melain stay in the middle with the medpack. Frek I'll need you to mark our passage so we can find our way back. Melain carry one of the rifle lights.
"Understood." Melain and Frek replied. They where about the head down the tunnel when they heard a loud noise like a giant bat coming down the passage toward them. Melain pulled out her Tricorder, and Steve set his phaser to stun. Just as it seemed the approching creature would be right on top of them the noise vanished and they couldn't see a thing.

SSgt Carrera had caught up to his commanding officer, who he had found lying flat on the ground. He knelt over him, trying to raise his consciousness. Zhukarak came to, shaking his head. “What happened colonel?” “I have no idea. I think something flew at me and struck my head, knocking me unconscious.”
They both got back to their feet and shed their lights in all directions to see if they could locate what might have caused this. “I wish I wouldn’t have left Theel’zhiin onboard. I really need to start to take him along more often.” No sooner did Colonel Hrisvalar finish his thought…*poof*…Theel’zhiin had appeared in front of him and was chirping in delight. “Yes, my friend. I am also glad to see you. I have forgotten how your kind can do that. It seems you are more capable than our own transporters.”
Sergeant Carrera was amazed and surprised also. “Colonel, couldn’t we use him to get a message back to the Nevada? Letting them know that we are alright.” Zhukarak thought about this. “Well, when I adopted him Healer T’Val did tell me that their method of transportation is called ‘going between’ as long as they know that there is open space for them to rematerialize. While ‘in between’ they take care of their bodily functions which leads me to believe that anything on their immediate body may travel with them.”
A noise was heard from where the marines had come from. They both raised their rifles and directed their lights in that direction. Another couple of lights came from around the bend. Zhukarak called out. “Commander?” Cmdr Steve answered in return. “Colonel. Glad to see you are alright. Did you find anything?”
“Well sir, I’m not sure. I was struck unconscious by some flying animal…I think.” Zhukarak was still rubbing the front of his head.” “Yes. We too had an encounter where we thought something was coming at us. It had a scream like a bat and then it seemed to stop right over us, but we didn’t see anything.” Cmdr Steve looked around as if to emphasize his report.
Lorre then noticed Theel’zhiin. “Hey, how did he get here?” Zhukarak explained the firelizard’s ability to ‘go between’, apparently even at great distances. “Healer T’Val also explained to me that as our bond becomes stronger, so does our link to each other, a type of telepathic link. When I came to, I was thinking of how his presence would be of assistance and he appeared.”
Frek then finally chimed in after an unusual silence from him, other than a couple of sniffles. “Then ~cough~ we could use him to send a ~ haaa~ message ~tchiii~ to the Nevada!” SSgt Carrera answered first. “Bless you sir and yes sir. That’s exactly what we were just discussing before you showed up. We just need to figure out what to send along with him to let them know we are okay.”
A few long seconds went by while everybody was thinking it over. The best solution seemed to be a recorded message for which a tricorder could have been used, but the issue came up that it seemed to be too big to go with Theel’zhiin. Then the commander had it. “Colonel. You mentioned a telepathic link between you and him. If we send him back, Grace may be able to sense from him that we are alright. It should work.” “That does sound possible, captain. We can then continue to investigate our encounter with what may be living in these caves.” Zhuk looked at Theel’zhiin to assure him they were alright when Cmdr Steve added something. “Yes, send that message back with him as well, our search may lead us to an intelligent life form.”
Zhuk patted his pet. “Go my guardian. Seek out Counselor Mitchell and let her know we are well.” Theel’zhiin understood and also sensed the rest of the message. He squawked once, fluttered his wings twice, as if to take flight, and then *poof*…he disappeared.
OOC: Grace, feel free to sim with Theel’zhiin.

Rex and Leo looked at each other then at Grace, at which point Grace began to smile and gave a small laugh. "I thought we could use a little mood lightener. I will not shirk this duty until that Captain comes to his senses."
Rex asked "How is the Captain?"
"The Captain is indisposed at the moment. I don't expect to get a chance to talk to him for a while yet. Now, down to business, report!"
"Still no change to report, Counselor." Leo said.
"Let's continue to make every effort, gentlemen." Grace walked over to her regular seat and began to sit.
"Umm, Grace, maybe you should move over a seat. You are the acting captain." Rex quietly reminded her.
"Your right, thanks. I forgot myself." Grace moved to the center seat and sat down. She looked around the bridge and could tell the majority of the bridge crew was a bit nervous. Her mind seemed to be going a hundred miles an hour. "Alright, Grace get a grip. The crew needs to feel the commanding officer has some confidence in her abilities." she thought to herself "I could sure use a small miracle right about now."
The miracle came in the appearance of Zhuk's firelizard, who appeared out of nowwhere in the counselor's chair.
"Well, hello, Theel’zhiin! Do you miss Zhuk?"
At which point Theel’zhiin answered telepathically "I have a message from the away team."
"Wonderful! What do they say?"
"They are all well, except for Frek, who has a cold. They are currently exploring a cave."
"Thank you. Can you return to the away team and inform them we are doing everything possible to get them back here. Also, inform them that I am currently acting captain, as the real Captain is currently indisposed and find out if Steve would mind if I contacted him in my unusual way. Retrun to me as soon as you can with an answer, please!"
Theel’zhiin nodded his head ever so slightly and disappeared.
Rex looked at her and asked "Are you able to communicate with Zhuk's firelizard, Grace."
"Yes. He has been on the surface and the away team is alright. They are currently exploring a cave for shelter from the storm. I have sent a message back as I need permission from a commanding officer to use my telepathy. Oh and Frek has a cold."

Having drank more than he had wanted to, in a short period of time, Harrias had started feeling quite woozy. As he lay down on his sofa, he considered that because of the situation they were in, he hadn't slept properly for almost a week. So it was, that only a few seconds after lying down, he was fast asleep, his feet hanging off the side of the sofa, the bottle of Saurian Ale, dropped onto the floor.
He awoke, a short while later to hear a loud banging on the other side of the door. At first, he couldn't figure out what it was, but after a while it became apparant that Grace wasn't particularly liking her position as Commanding Officer. The trill sighed, and rolled off the bed, landing heavily on the floor. When he clambered back to his feet, he noticed that the counsellor had stopped her banging, and he made his way slowly to the door, wondering what she was up to. When he heard nothing more for a few minutes, he tapped the console to open the door, and it slid open.
In the brief seconds when the door was open, he saw Grace's fist cocked, and then released towards him, making a sound contact with his chest. The trill Captain was thrown backwards, and struck the floor, his head smashing backwards against the floor, knocking him out cold.

Lorre was relieved when she saw the two marines come out of the passage way, Zhuk had a blody scrap on his head, but otherwise seemed fine. She was about to tend to him when his fire Lizard peaked it's head out from behind the Andorian “Hey, how did he get here?”
Zhuk explained, and together the away team found a way to use his ability to their advantage. As the fire Lizard dissapeard Lorre turned back to Zhuk. "Let me take a look at that cut, I've already done something about Freks cold, although he's the only Andorian I've met who can't stand the lower temperatures."
Zhuk let her take a look, it was a surface wound, easily fixed. "Oncxe we get back on board I'd love to take a closer look at Theel’zhiin, This "go between" stuff he does must require quite a few physiological fasinations for the likes of us Doctors. Would that be alright?'

With Hrisvalar more or less back in shape again, thanks to the professional medical care applied by Dr. Lorre, the away team stood in a circle facing each other. Frek sneezed again, he wasn’t too sure if they should go further into the caves if they really didn’t have to. At least not until the storm had cleared and normal communications were restored. Intelligent life didn’t always mean it would be friendly life. Although non-intelligent life didn’t have to be friendly as well, Frek mused. After all, the bat had knocked Zhukarak unconscious.
“I have mixed experiences with bats,” Frek said. Someone sighed quite audibly. “Why’s that?” Commander Steve asked. “Well…” Frek started, “During a camping trip a few years back, we encountered a colony of bats. For some reason they kept stealing our food supplies and them consume them hanging upside down from the branches, staring at us with those creepy eyes.” “So what did you do?” Carrera asked somewhat amused. Frek shrugged. “Nothing. The food turned out to be way over its expiration date. The bats got food poisoning.” “Ugh,” Melain said wrinkling her nose, “And you didn’t even notice it was bad?”
Frek was just about to explain to her the trickiness of alien foods when a loud rumbling sound came thundering through the cave. The cloud of dust that came with the sound didn’t waste any time and soon everyone in the cavern was covered with a thin film of dust. Someone in the group uttered some not-so-nice words. “What the hell was that?” Zhukarak coughed, trying to get the dust out of his lunges. The strong beam of his torch made an effort to pierce through powder filled cave. Frek stumbled towards the exit, or to where it was supposed to be. He couldn’t see very much and tried to compensate by using his hands. He could only feel loose rocks. “It’s a cave in!” he shouted back. It seemed like they had no choice, but to follow the corridor Colonel Zhukarak started to explore. After a few twists and turn the corridor narrowed and they were forced to walk in line. If it weren’t for their torches it would have been pitch dark. “You think we’ll find any intelligent life down here?” Melain asked. Frek shook his head. “Nah, I don’t think so. If we do it isn’t going to be very sophisticated. We’ve done some thorough scans from orbit and we didn’t find any trace of technology present.” “Are you sure the hypospray you gave me is working?” Frek asked in between two sneezes, “Doesn’t seem to be doing very much.” Melain sighed. “Give it some time Frek. It doesn’t simply make you cold disappear in a matter of seconds.”
Carrera who was walking at the front of the group suddenly halted. “I think I hear something,” he whispered, “Just listen.” Cleary they could hear the sound of something disturbing the air. It echoed through the tunnels, increasing with every second. The four men and the one woman tried to pierce the darkness, but even with the aid of their torches it was no use. There were too many turns in the tunnels, it was impossible to see what was around the next corner. “I heard stories about man eating bats,” Frek whispered. Commander Steve gave him a disapproving look. “I do hope these aren’t Lieutenant.” The sound grew louder. Instinctively the group kneeled to the ground, peering overhead. Waiting for the disturbance to reach them.

Melain had her scanner out the instant she heard the noise, but as before it detected nothing. The noise grew closer and closer and she could Feel Frek tense from where he knelt beside her. On her other side the Major had his rifle up and ready to shoot, as she suspected would Carrera, but the creatute never appeard, and the sound died down suddenly.
"Bats I can stand, but this ghost act doesn't sit well with me." Melain commented as she stood up. "If only we could get a good look at it. Zhuk, when you where attacked did you get a good look at the bat, assuming it is a bat." Melain realised that they had simply assumed that a winged creature in a cave was a bat, but really they had no idea.
"It hit me from behind, I didn't see a thing." Zhuk replied as he also stood up.
"The scanners wont work on it, and we can't see them, so every body keep your ears open and we'll continue carefully." Steve instructed. After they all stood up and shook themselves off they headed back down the tunnel.
After what seemed like hours Melain started to have secound thoughtsMaybe we should have stayed near the opening, could we have shot through the cave in? Is Frek marking our passage? The last question was soon answerd.
"Commander, I think we may be going in circles. I've marked our way by scratching lettters on the cave walls, and we have just passed what looks like an V." the Navigational Officer commented. Major Zhuk shown his light in Frek's direction, and there was indeed a V like scratch.
Just as the group started to look for other letters, the winging sound began again. "Duck!" Steve orderd and the away team hit the deck. Melain did not bother to take out her scanner this time, but rather turned on her light and searched with it in the direction of the noise. The sound grew louder, and in a moment it was right on top of them. Melain stared intently at the place the creature should have been, and for a moment could have sworn she saw a shadow, but then it was gone, and the away team was alone once more.

Lani was just waking up, as the night shift was due to start in a few minutes. He knew, that with it being an alert situation, the odds were that the captain would tell him to wait until the situation was recitified, but he still had to report for duty, and make sure he wasn't needed. He was going slowly through his routine, and a few minutes later, was only just leaving his quarters. He soon arrived on the bridge, and was extremely surprised to find that Grace was sitting in the centre seat.
"Grace, I must say, although the seat goes with your uniform, it is not somewhere that I expected to find you. Where, pray, is our good captain. I do hope you haven't killed him and assumed command." There was jest in his voice, although from the serious looks he saw from the rest of the bridge crew, he surmised that this was not the time for such jollity. "Sorry, but really, why isn't the captain here?"
The counsellor replied, making sure to watch her words. "The captain decided that I should take temporary charge. I would assume he has taken leave of his senses. It is something I will look into after this situation has been averted."
Lani looked at Grace, and knew she didn't want the command. At the same time, she outranked him, and was senior staff, while although he commanded the ship, he was very rarely involved in senior staff matters. Still, he knew that he could take command from her, should she wish it. He wasn't sure exactly what he should do, leave the counsellor in charge, as she was briefed on the situation, or offer his assistance. He split the difference.
"Well, as I am meant to be starting my shift, I can act as first officer until someone else returns?"

"Thank you, Lani, I could really use the help. Any suggestions you may have in this situation would be greatly appreciated." Grace said loud enough for the crew to hear. More quietly so only Lani could hear "I would pass command to you or someone else, but I feel the crew could not use another shake up. I can tell that they are nervous and jumpy about all that has happened so far. I think we need to stay status quo until the Captain comes to his senses or Commander Steve returns."
"Currently, I am having the crew continue to try to get sensors through the storm on the planet. Zhuk's firelizard has been on the surface and returned here to let me know the away team is still healthy, with the exception of Frek having a cold. I sent Theel'shin back with a message, but I haven't received any information back yet."
"Why don't you use your telepathy? I know you could contact Commander Steve that way, you've done it before."
"I know, but I gave the Captain my word I would only use it when ordered to by him or Commander Steve. I can't break my word."
"I know you always become loyal to your commanding officers, but you are the commanding officer, you could order yourself to use your telepathy. Technically, you would not be going back on your word."
"Remember, I am only in command temporarily. I will not abuse the small amount of trust the captain has in me, it could have long range retribution. But if things get too out of hand, I will use it or wait for Theel'shin to return with an okay from Steve"
"I have always admired your integrity, but sometimes it goes too far. Suit yourself, I'll look aver the data we have and give you as much advice as I can."
"Thanks! I keep wondering if I'll get through this."
"That is something I know you can do. You don't like to but I know you can do this, Grace. If I didn't, I would recommend someone else take command."
"I appreciate your confidence in me, Lani. Should we both get to work?"

While the kind doctor was tending to Zhukarak’s wounds, she had inquired about the possibility of studying Theel’zhiin’s physiology.
“Dr. Melain, I’m sure that Theel’zhiin won’t mind a few scans and possibly some tests, but don’t expect him to sit around as a…a…a guinea pig as humans would call it.”
“Oh heavens no. What kind of doctor do you think I am? The usual scans and tests would be just fine. Thank you!”
They had continued on through the caves’ passages after being hindered to return their original way due to a cave in.
Everyone started to get back up when there was a *poof*. Two phaser rifles and one hand phaser pointed in the direction of the disturbance when Zhuk yelled out. “HOLD YOUR FIRE!” to everyone’s relief it was the firelizard, Theel’zhiin.
The Commander asked right away. “Did he get through? Does he have any news for us?” Zhukarak looked at Theel’zhiin and asked out loud. “My Guardian, what news do you bring?” Theel’zhiin squawked a couple of times and fluttered his wings. Zhuk spoke as he was receiving slight images from their bond. “I see Counselor Mitchell in the Captains chair. She is apparently in command. Cmdr Steve, I don’t quite understand this next part. Something about the counselor wishing to contact you?”
Everyone looked at the Commander, awaiting an answer.

Lotrai found it was a couple kids haning around an area they probably shouldn't be, but she didn't say anything as she headed to the bridge.
She had a hard time finding it, but finally she got to the bridge. The turbolift doors open, and she is amazed at the sight before her eyes. People were moving all around working at their stations. It was like a ballet of sorts, and she enjoyed seeing it. She then moves onto the bridge and finds the person in charge. Before she goes to that person, she puts on her belt, which is fully loaded with star fleet and her own weapons. and heads over.
"Sir, Ensign Lotrai reporting in." She says standing at attention.

As he heard the young Ensign speak, Lani spun around, his brow curling into a frown.
"Where the hell did you come from?" He demanded of her.
She looked at him, shocked, having no idea why he was reacting so violently. "From the Academy sir."
"The academy?!" He exclaimed. "But that is beyond the galactic barrier. To fly a shuttle from there to here is.. well, it's impossible."
The Acting Ensign looked back at him, he face hard. "Well, that is how I got here. Sir."
The martian planted himself in front of a console. After tapping away at it for a few minutes, his face lifted.
"Grace! Her shuttle was brought here through another gateway. I have the coordinates that she got here from. There is a possibility it is still open. Should we go investigate?"
The counsellor looked torn. Lt Cmdr Talla could tell why. He had given her a possible way home, but to take it would mean leaving most of the senior staff on the planet. She was about to speak, but stopped again, her mind obviously going through hell. She looked at the night shift CO, a look of pleading in here eyes. Lani, not wanting to, took command for a few seconds.
"Miss Paver. Lay in a course for the last known location of that gateway. Engage on my mark." He turned to the operations officer. "Mr Jenkins, automate a shuttle to hold a geosychronous orbit around the planet, targetting the location of the away team. Leave a message on it with the location of the gateway." The 21 year old american looked slightly pained, but carried out the order, and a few minutes later, the viewscreen showed the shuttle in front of them.
"Lieutenant Paver. Engage." The relief navigation officer, a human brunette from Terra Nova, tapped the console in front of her, and the USS Nevada-A lurched away from the planet, leaving their away team stranded.
As it turned out, the gateway had been much closer than Lani had been suspecting. So it was, that half an hour later, they were looking at the gateway. It was certainly there, and from what Lt Cmdr Talla could ascertain, it was still locked to take them back to near Starbase Conqueror, which was a lot closer to home than they were at the moment. He took a deep breath. So far, he had ordered nothing that couldn't be reversed later. But if they went through here, there was a good chance they would not be able to return. He looked across at Grace. Although she still sat in the centre seat, and wore the four golden pips, it was clear that she was happy that Lani was taking more control of the situation.
Of course, that didn't really make the martian feel much better. He would far have preferred to be sitting in the canteen, waiting for Captain Jira to sort the problem out. But, he was a starfleet officer, and this was what he had been trained for. If he ever wanted to get a command of his own, which he did one day, he would need to learn to make the tough decisions.
"Lieutenant Paver. Take us through."
The bridge dropped into silence, other than the quiet, sad reply. "Aye sir. Engaging impulse."
The ship slowly accelerated towards the gateway. When they got within a few hundred kilometres, it activated, revealing swirling, twisting, entwining patterns. Lani focussed on them, trying to remove the images in his mind. To try and get rid of the scrolling faces in his mind. The andorians, Zhukarak and Frek. Carrera, Zhuk's right hand man. Lorre Melain, the cure bajoran doctor. Steve, the trusty first officer.
The ship started to vibrate, and his mind was brought back to the task, thankfully getting rid of the ghostly images. "Jennifer," he inadvertantly used the navigation Lieutenant's first name, "keep us steady."
She nodded, and with her work, the ship shook slightly less. He turned to Lotrai, who had taken the engineering console. "How are our systems?"
"Holding up sir."
Grace rose to her feet, and stepped forwards until she was beside Lani. She was biting her bottom lip.
"No. Stop. We can't do this, we are a crew. We can't leave some of our own behind."
"They have a chance Grace. We left them a root home. There are 700 people on this ship, and less than 10 on that planet. The needs of the many Grace. The needs of the many..."
"We are a crew Lt Cmdr. We are a crew, and at the moment I am that crew's commanding officer. Miss Paver, pull us back, and take us back to the planet. We will rescue them."

Zhuk spoke as he was receiving slight images from their bond. “I see Counsellor Mitchell in the Captains chair. She is apparently in command. Cmdr Steve, I don’t quite understand this next part. Something about the counsellor wishing to contact you?” Everyone looked at the Commander, awaiting an answer. Steve stood thinking for a moment and spoke outloud "I know we ordered her but bloody hell Grace some orders can be broken" Everyone stood there looking at him not really sure what he was talking about "Sir?" Zhuk asked "As you know Grace is a telepath and she has the ability to reach into peoples minds and talk to them." "Well why hasn't she done this then?" Frek said almost demanding an answer. Steve's head shot round "We ordered her not to, it isn't right that a crew member can read peoples thoughts and invade their privacy." "But this situation is different Commander, its a matter of life and death." Frek replied "Don't you think I know that?" Steve said shaking his head, he was tired, wet and very cold and just wanted to get back to the ship. "What shall I tell Theel’zhiin?" Zhuk asked "If you could ask him to tell Grace to do what ever she thinks is right and she has my permission to make a telepathic link with me." Zhuk passed the information over to his fire lizard and bid it good luck.
The fire lizard stood preparing itself to teleport back to the ship when it stopped what it was doing and connected to Zhuk's mind
“My Guardian, is something wrong?” The firelizard told the major that he sensed that Grace had moved a great distance. When Zhuk had first suggested to the firelizard that he should give Grace a message Theel’zhiin managed to locate Grace's strong telepathic signal and transport to there. Now the signal was much weaker and much further away, but there was no doubt it was Grace.
Zhuk turned to Steve "Commander, Theel’zhiin has informed me that the Nevada has left the orbit of the planet and are on the other side of the system. Do you still want him to go?" "Will he be able to transport that far?" Steve asked not wanting anything to happen to the lizard. "They have the ability to travel great distances, If he isn't able to he wont try it" "Ok then, tell him to contact Grace as soon as possible and relay my message."
With that Zhuk informed the lizard and it vanished.

“Left orbit?” Frek asked, following the conversation. He didn’t very much dig that idea. “Where the hell are they going?” There was no doubt about everyone down here had probably that same question in mind. Being stranded on a strange planet with somewhat doubtful weather habits was one thing, but being left without a chance to get off again was something Frek didn’t even want to consider. “I know as much as you do Lieutenant,” Steve replied. He had a firm expression on his face, “But I’m sure they wouldn’t leave unless they have a damn good reason.” Frek looked at his colleagues. They looked cold, somewhat filthy and worn out. He stared at his feet. He was standing in a pool of water, the result of the moist dripping from the walls and ceiling. He could see a reflection staring back at him. It was a tired and dust covered Andorian. Frek pitied him. If he felt as bad as he looked Frek hoped he didn’t look like him.
“There’s no use staying here,” Melain said. Her voice sounded somewhat eerie in the tunnel. As if the sound was absorbed by the cold stone walls and then spit out again in the form of a soft whispering echo. She looked straight at Commander Steve. “Do we proceed through the tunnels sir?” She said it in a way as if she rather didn’t want to go any further. Frek couldn’t blame her. He didn’t want to go in further at all, but she was right. Staying here was as futile as trying to have a nice party with a bunch of drunken Klingons. He could know, he tried once. It was one of those occasions when you wake up two days later on a beach you don’t recall ever have been to previously. Steve nodded. “We’ll continue the way we were heading. We still don’t know what’s out there.” Frek looked down the dark corridor. “As if we really want to know,” he muttered under his breath. The team pick up the gear they dropped during the recent consternation and resumed their way through the tunnel. Slowly they progressed, on their guard for new appearances from one of those bat-like ghost creatures. They all knew it would be inevitable, it was clear they were around. At some point Frek thought he could here them in the distance, but it could be his imagination playing tricks with his mind. Wandering through dark and damp tunnels, inhabited by ghost-like creature, does do much good to ones stability. If Frek would have to make a guess, he would say they were at least half a kilometre underground. Except him running into a stalactite, nothing extraordinary happened. The tunnels remained as they were, dark and empty. At least an hour had past since their last encounter when Carrera who had the lead suddenly halted. “Shh!!!” he hissed as he turned around. He pointed into the dark. “I think I hear something!” Frek sharpened his ears, his antenna’s pointing out over his forehead in concentration. “I can’t hear a thing,” he whispered to Melain. “Neither can I,” she whispered back. “I’m sure of it,” Carrera spoke softly. “You didn’t imagine it?” Zhukarak asked. “Definitely not!” Carrera replied, raising his voice slightly. “What the hell...” Steve looked up. He suddenly noticed what Carrera noticed earlier.
The others stared down the tunnel as well. Not because they were alarmed by the Commanders outburst, but because they noticed the change as well. A very low, hardly audible, sound filled the tunnels. It was the sort of sound you could feel, pulsing through the air. It grew until was almost painful for the ears, they could feel the floor vibrating beneath them. This was something they hadn’t encountered before. “Look at that,” Frek said quietly and in awe. At it was just a shimmer, not unlike the waving of the air on a hot summer day. Transparent at first, but soon becoming milky white and dense, it was like a mysterious mist, ascending from the floor and disappearing through the ceiling. Slowly the mist began to change colour, it shifted almost through the whole visual spectrum. For a moment Frek simply forgot where he was and his worries, taken in by what could only be described as a beautiful sight. As quickly as it came it faded again. The mist dissipated and with the fading of that sound at ultra-low frequency the vibrating stopped as well. It lasted at least a minute before someone spoke. Frek scraped his throat. “Well, I think we could say that was something unexpected,” he said a bit hoarse. “What in the prophets’ name was that?” Melain whispered. “It was beautiful.” “It seemed to have come from below us,” Carrera noted. “It seemed to have come from everywhere,” Steve corrected, “We must be close to something, what else could it be.” No-one had an answer; it was clearly a rhetorical question. Frek had a weird sensation inside. It was partly curiosity, a sense of adventure and of course fear. Combine this with the adrenaline flowing and you have a good mixture to keep you running. Not before long they found a hole in the floor. It was barely big enough to get through, but not undoable. Zhukarak slowly swung his light through the chamber they found themselves in and found what they were looking for. A passageway leading out. It was quite narrow and let down steeply. More than once they had to bend down to prevent hitting the ceiling with their heads, which happened on several occasions made clear by some muffled curses. Another sharp bend. All they could do was stand there and stare down on the spectacle that unfolded before them. They found themselves standing on small plateau, or maybe it was more of a ridge, hanging over a huge spacious cave. Some huge transparent pillars reached from the bottom to the top, filled with the mist they encountered before in all its colours, relentlessly swirling. Some of it leaked through and sank to the floor where it drifted around not unlike ground fog. The low edge pulsing sound started again and the swirling inside the pillars increased in speed and intensity, until it broke through its containment. The scene they had witnessed earlier repeated itself, only on grand scale this time. The mist drew through the walls and ceilings, making its way up. The away team just stood their, taking it all in. “What is this?” Frek whispered softly.
**********************************
The Nevada’s thrusters fired and the ship turned around to set a course back to the planet where they had left the away team. Jennifer Pavel had mixed feelings. This might have been their only chance to get home, but on the other hand she was relieved the acting CO, Counsellor Mitchell, had decided to go back for their crewmates instead of leaving them behind. She went through the usual routines involved with piloting a starship, when she suddenly alarmed. “Sir,” she said, “I’m detecting a ship in orbit around the planet. Origin unknown.” “I’m not getting a signal from the shuttles responder we left in orbit,” Jenkins said hastily checking his instruments. “Not on active sensors as well.”
“Their weapons are online Ma’am,” Bonar said. The counsellor’s mind raced, she wasn’t the right person to be in command during these sorts of crises. Talla noticed she was somewhat helpless. “Raise shields. Lieutenant Paval, get us in orbit synchronous with the alien vessel. Keep them between us and the planet,” he ordered. “We are being hailed,” Bonar reported. “On screen,” Grace said straightening her uniform. The image of the alien vessel circling the planet disappeared and was replaced by the image of what she assumed to be the Captain. The creature spoke. “I am Dimmu Nelg of the E’rify’ks mining vessel Rigrob.” Grace assumed Dimmu was the local equivalent of the rank awarded to a commanding officer. The E’rify’ks had a somewhat dark greenish colour with several large dark orange and red spots on the skull. Bright orange eyes peered from underneath a heavy ridge which was located where humans would find their eyebrows. The introduction continued. “I don’t know who you are, but you are trespassing. This system is E’rify’ks territory. We are engaged in mining activities and we will defend our claim.”

Melain stared at the whisps in wonder, and was reminded of the prophets. Granted she had never seen the prophets herself, but she'd read reports by those who had.
"What is this?" Frek asked from where he stood beside her. Melain suddenly realised she'd been unofficialy placed as the away mission's tricorder master. She held the tricorder up and took some scans
"I'm getting nothing, just like the bats, maybe their the same thing." She commented, unwilling to tear her eyes away from the awsome sight. A few moments later and it drifted out of site, leaving the away team in the dark feeling empty and hopeless.
"Should we follow it?" Carrera asked eagerly, echoing the same desire as everyone else.
"We can't, there's no tunnel heading that direction, and I can't trace it." Melain replied bitterly.
"So what do we do now?" Frek asked.
"Maybe we should head back to where we came from and try and contact the ship again, the storm may have passed." Zhuk suggested. Melain nodded in agreement.
"Sounds good to me." Steve approved and the away team reluctently headed out of the cavern. They retraced their steps untill meeting a fork in the tunnel. "Check for Frek's marking, I can't remember which we came through." Steve orderd.
The search cam back empty. "Frek are you sure that you where marking our path around here?" Melain asked, even though he had verfified several times that he had been quite diligent about it.
"I did, I know I did. How could it be gone?" Frek asked exasperated.
"Maybe the water dripping down the walls washed it away?" Carrera suggested, but there was no water running down the tunnels walls anywhere near the fork.
