Grace left sickbay and went to her office. She checked and had no appointments scheduled.
She began to search inward for the source of pain she had experienced. It was a pain she had never encountered before and she was fairly certain it had come for the Dradrian. Grace bcame sad thinking about theses poor souls going through that much pain continually. The few seconds she had experienced it were enough for her.
Grace began to feel what she called 'tickling' of her mind from an outside source. She wondered if she should open her mind to the source, if she did would it be breaking her promise to the captain. Maybe not, since it was trying to contact her not the other way around. She decided to open her mind to the intruder.
Again she felt excruciating pain, that was all. Nothing but pain. She closed her mind to it.
"What the hell is going on? Is that pain from the Dradrian in sickbay or from some other source? I must think. I need to determine where that pain is coming from. Think, Grace, think!"

- “Captain, we are detecting a strong source of energy a short way off our course. Should we investigate?” Came Commander Jenkin’s voice from the operations console. - “Negative Commander, we have a job to do. Run all the sensor scans you can on it during our approach to the starbase, but do not change course or adjust speed.” Jira noticed that his operations officer wasn’t pleased at being told that he could not investigate it, but nevertheless, he accepted the order. If the truth be told, Harrias was now extremely interested in the artefact, however there would be plenty of time to investigate that after they had evacuated the personnel from the starbase. About half an hour later, Lieutenant Commander Jenkins walked down from his console, and hovered next to the captain’s chair. The trill turned to him, and the operations officer leant down until his mouth was next to Jira’s ear. - “I need to speak to you in your ready room sir. I have a report on that artefact I detected a while back.” - “What’s with the subterfuge? Couldn’t you have told me this in a slightly less secretive manner?” The trill shot back, and Jenkins stood up to see that almost all of the crew were staring at them. - “Sorry sir.” The pair left the bridge and took seats inside Jira’s ready room. - “So, what have you got?” - “These,” Leo passed him a PADD with some pictures on it. “are the visuals I managed to pick up. As you can see, they aren’t very good quality due to our distance, but you can make out the shape, that seems to be technological, probably not organic, due to these weird pipes we can see running down the side of it.” - “I see. And the energy?” - “I’m not sure yet. However, we do know that this thing is moving, albeit slowly. It’s path took it passed the starbase, within a few thousand kilometres, about a week ago. And sir, this thing is massive.” - “You are saying this could be connected to the virus?” - “I’m not saying anything sir. However, it is worth adding to the possibilities. And maybe a team should be sent to investigate.” - "How large exactly is massive?" - "Larger than the starbase sir." Jira sighed. His operations officer was, of course, right. A team should be sent to investigate, especially if there could be some connection to the virus. The problem was that he didn’t want to send too many people, as they would be needed for the evacuation. Ha tapped his commbadge. =/\= Could Lt Colonel Hrisvalar, Lt Commander Talla, and Ensign Vicente all please make their way to shuttlebay 3. Lt Commander Jenkins will brief you on your mission there. =/\= The trill looked away from the operations officer, wondering whether Ensign Vicente’s efforts would have been better kept on the virus. However, he would have to entrust that to the medical staff, who, he was sure, would be glad to get rid of the science officer. And, as science officer, Vicente was perfectly suited to this mission. OOC: Please check this link to see more about this pyramid. Also, read up on the Assailant board, as they should have more about it, if not now, then later. Also... this is going to be our way home folks! section47.proboards18.com/index.cgi?board=SBA&action=display&thread=1123614786

(O.O.C Sounds good Captain. I'm afraid my posts are going to be somewhat less exciting, or good in any way as I am currently operating under the effects of tylenol three, and a rather sore mouth (got my wisdom teeth removed yesterday), but I'll do my best)
In sickbay, Melain and Roman had made some headway on mapping the virus. "It's certainly similer to Syla’s virus, but this I've never seen before." Melain pointed to a section of the readout.
Roman zoomed into that section. "Neurological effects I suspect, but you are right I've never seen anything like it."
"See what you can pull up from the database on Syla's virus, I'm going to..." Melain was interupted by a chirp from her comm badge.
=A=Doctor, I require your assistance in ward two. The patient is.. well she's awake and becoming difficult to control, I tried to sedate her, but with no effect.=A= Tom's voice sounded concerned, and unless Melain was mistaken he sounded as though he was being pressed against a wall. =A= You may want to bring a phaser =A=
=A= Hold on Tom, I'm comming=A= Melain turned to Roman. "I don't supose you'd mind joining me? It sounds as if our patient has reached the later stages of the virus."
<Tag Roman>
(O.O.C That was the hardest post I've made in my life, sorry if it's hard to read. I think I'm going to go lay down)

~LtCol Zhukarak Hrisvalar.~ The title was new, as Zhuk had been un-ceremonialy promoted to take the place of Cmdr Steve, who undoubtedly was not going to be coming out of his critical but stable condition. It was a pro-temp promotion, to ensure he wasn’t officially outranked by anyone onboard as he was filling the shoes of the First Officer. He would be stepping back down when Cmdr Steve recovered from his illness, if he recovered.
His comm badge chirped with his new title. He was quickly on his way to shuttlebay three, wondering what was up. Old habits were hard to put down as Zhuk made his way to the marine armory first to collect his gear for tactical deployment. He didn’t even know what the nature of this call was, as he hadn’t been on the bridge for the past thirty minutes. Zhukarak knew that they were still a few hours away from reaching their destination. Something very important must have come up.
As he reached the shuttlebay, he was met by LtCmdr Talla and Lt Vicente. LtCmdr Jenkins hadn’t arrived yet to brief them. Zhuk had just realized that his Guardian hadn’t joined him. ~ Theel’zhiin, my Guardian Sword, come. ~ It had become apparent why Theel’zhiin hadn’t joined Zhuk earlier, as he appeared out of thin air finishing up on one of his Terran favorites, chicken. His fondness for terran food was increasing at an exponential rate.
The three officers were standing by at one of the shuttles, awaiting the arrival of Mr. Jenkins, while trying to figure out what this mission would entail.

Sat, leaning against the shuttlecraft, Lani Talla was waiting for Lt Cmdr Jenkins to arrive with their orders. He had heard about the weird object that had been spotted by the operations chief, and had an inkling that this mission may in some way be connected to that artefact. Indeed, he was somewhat surprised that the captain had selected him to go on the mission. Being the nightshift CO, it was very rare for him to ever be asked to do something by the day shift. Then and again, the mission they were being sent on wasn’t a short, one shift mission, it was one that would go across a few of them, and thus it made more sense than it seemed.
They were only waiting for a couple of minutes before the young officer arrived. He nodded at the all in general, and then the small group filed into the shuttlecraft. Once inside, Hrisvalar took the pilot’s seat, and Talla sat beside him, and the pair turned back to Jenkins.
- “Our mission Mr Jenkins?” - “Yes, indeed. The captain has asked if we could investigate this artefact that was discovered earlier on today. All the information that we currently have on it is here,” he passed them all PADDs, “and well, we just have to work out what it is, and whether it is connected to the virus.” - “That’s all then?” Talla asked slightly tongue in cheek, as the mission sounded quite complex. - “Yes, yes, that’s all.”
Talla smiled. Although the young officer had been with them for a number of months now, in fact when he thought about it it was over a year now that he had been on board, he was still slightly nervous around the senior staff, even though he numbered among them.
With the acting first officer, Hrisvalar, running the pre flight checks, Lani was free to read through the information that they had on the object. As he was glancing through, he looked at some of the power readings. Frowning, he stood up and moved over to Lieutenant Vicente.
- “Lieutenant. Look at these.” He indicated the readings that he was looking at. The science officer flicked his PADD through a few more pages, and looked at the data on his own PADD. He, in turn frowned at what he was reading. - “But that means that…” - “That this device has been communicating with at least three other devices, with a constant flow of information travelling between them.” - “Yes, but not only that. This device has been moving stuff to and from them. And from the power readings, whatever it was moving was either extremely large, or an extremely long distance away. It is impossible to tell which until we get to the device.”
Talla didn’t want to sound like he was getting excited, when he said, - “So, do you think we can use this to get us home?” - “Unlikely. I would suspect that the transporter that this is equipped with can only transport us to another device. So unless there is one of these in orbit of earth, then I would doubt we can use it to get home.” - “But closer?” - “More likely, but again, it will be hard to tell until we are there.”
Lani sighed. It had been a long hope, but in those few seconds his mood had been raised significantly, and now it had been smashed back to the ground again. He moved back to the front of the shuttle just as Hrisvalar was requesting clearance to launch. The affirmative reply was given almost instantly, and the shuttle leapt out of the bay into the vastness of space.
OOC: Okay, new plan, and one that needs implemently as quickly as we can. The team that is going out to the artefact needs to figure out how to manipulate it to travel to the artefact near assailant as soon as they can. Then we need to declare the starbase too dangerous, and evacuate everyone onto the Nevada. Then the Nevada goes through the artefact, to join in with the joint mission at assailant. I’m sorry for the massive rush needed (the Nev wants to be travelling through Wed or Thurs ideally), but it’s the best way I can see to involve us in the joint mission, and get us back home.

(O.O.C I'll do my best to write decently and coherently. still a little confused about the getting home thing, but thats probably just the Tylenol messing with my mind)
When Melain stepped through decon and into Ward two, she saw Tom being pressed against the bulkhead by a very angry, very much awake Dradrian. She was attempting to bash his head on the overhead storage cabinet, but without much luck.
"Did you try using a dose of Melorazin?" Melain called out from inside her biosuit.
"I maxed out the dosage when she attacked me. This may not hurt doctor, but I'd rather it stop." Tom managed to reply. "I don't think a sedative is going to work, the virus is counteracting it's effect."
With all other options run dry, Melain did the only thing she could do. She drew her phaser, set on stun, and took aim.
Melain's aim had never been good, but even she couldn't miss a fully grown humanoid standing on;y a few meters away. The patient swayed, and immediatly collapsed to the floor.
"Are you certain that was necessary?" Tom asked, brushing off his "uniform."
Melain helped Tom carry the women back to the biobed "You told me to make her stop, set a level four force field biobed four." Melain replied.
=A= Bridge to sickbay, we're coming up on the Star Base, and should be within evacuation range in ten minutes =A=
=A= Acknowledged, all emergancy medical teams report to your posts and prepare to recieve evacuees =A= Melain replied. "Looks like we'll need to keep our patients under heavy guard. I'd better warn the other ships."

It had been forty minutes since the shuttle departed from the Nevada. Now, the away team was staring at this huge artifact, pyramid in shape.
"It could be a ship." Zhukarak was thinking out loud. "It does have some type of a propulsion system similar to our own. look at this ion trail." Cmdr Talla transferred the information from his display over to Zhuk's for him to get a better look.
"Lieutenant Vicente, do you have any more information for us?" Zhuk was more than curious now.
Roman Vicente had been going over the science station, trying to decipher the readings from the sensor suite. "Well, as I mentioned earlier, it is communicating with something but I don't know with what or whom, or even why. Wait a minute...I've seen this before."
Cmdr Talla's interest peeked. "What is it Lieutenant?"
"Part of this data within it's communication stream has a DNA sequence. If I'm not mistaken, it is similar to what Dr. Lorre and I found when we analyzed blood samples from some of our patients that we have already picked up." Roman was tapping a few buttons here and there while analyzing his new find.
"Are you saying that this artifact could be the cause of the virus in this system?" Zhukarak quickly questioned with profound alertness now.
"I think so. I mean, if so it is inadvertent. It would seem that as it's communication stream passes through anything organic, it may be spreading this virus to anything that is not immune to it."
Thhel'zhiin, who was sitting quietly in the back of the shuttle, was now flapping his wings in full excitement as he sensed the urgency in Zhukarak. Zhuk was now determined as ever. "We need to find a way inside of that artifact to find out more."
Just as Zhukarak had said those words, a bright green beam of light appeared from the pyramid artifact. It briefly lit up a section of space before disappearing again. The section of space upon which the light had shown, was now devoid of anything. Stars could not be seen there, like it was a black hole without the gravity of one. The artifact propelled its way to that part of space only to disappear through it.
"Commander, Lieutenant, any readings?" Zhuk was requesting.
Cmdr Talla was the first to respond. "No. All readings of the artifact have disappeared. It's physically gone...somewhere."
"I can't get any readings of that part of space either. I mean...it's there and then again not there." Roman was perplexed for the moment. "The data stream readings are gone too." He added.
"I believe we have just witnessed a type of a gateway. It hasn't closed yet. Let's send out a Class IV Stellar Encounter Probe and hope we can see what is on the other side." Zhuk was upset that he hadn't had the chance to board the artifact, but was hopeful to find out where this gateway might lead to.
Lt Vicente prepped and sent out the probe. The probe guided it's way to and then through the 'black hole'. The away team was waiting patiently and anxiously. After two tense minutes of nothing, Roman spoke up with excitement in his voice. "Uh, Commander, Colonel, you might want to take a close look at these readings. I don't believe it myself, but I do think our home is on the other side of that gateway."
They all looked over the readings. They were unmistakable. Starbase Assailant was identified, along with a few various S47 ships in the area.
"I'll send a sub-space relay via the probe to S47. We need to inform the Captain and get back to the Nevada quickly. We have no means of knowing how long this gateway will remain open." Zhukarak surmised.
A message was sent to S47 informing them of their status and what they had found so far of this artifact. Cpt Jira was also informed of the situation. The shuttle hurried back to the Nevada as quickly as it could.
OOC: Sorry if I kinda ran with this, but that is exactly what we needed to do...run, in order to get with the Fleet Mission. We just need to pick up our patients now and get them to Assailant as soon as possible.

Evacuation went relativly smoothly, most of the patients where sent to the larger Nevada, rather then the other ships. Before long two more empty cago bays needed to be adapted for refugee use and the Medical team was hurrying around tending to those already affected by the virus. Several Dradrians had tested negative for the illness and where seperated from the others. Those who had enterd the later, more violent phase where kept in isolation untill treatment could be found.
Engineering crews had determined that the base' systems where unrepairable, and with the entire structure rife with the virus it was deemed unsafe, and abandoned.
Melain found herself soo busy organising the relief effort that she had no time to continue working on the blood samples, although she had collected several more. Most symptoms where treatable within the next several hours, but the key to the virus it'self had eluded them.
(O.O.C I'll let someone on the bridge get a message from the away team. Meanwhile be comforted that the base has been emptied, and the refugees are aboard)

Thoughts, matter and motion. But nothing mattered more than the motion that would carry the lost and lonely from these unfamiliar places to their homes, nothing mattered more than the wind in their sails still lacking as in the hearts the right course had already been set. Lonely amongst the masses, but together to share their loneliness. Thoughts, matter and motion. The plethora of hopes and fears pushing in all directions until a strong foothold was hard to maintain in these hours that, in the interest of other pursuits, had seen uncertainty break loose from the bounds of time, for temporarily only did duty itself keep the doors shut and the windows closed tot he doubtful strangers outside. Thoughts, matter and motion. Yet what of the motion of thoughts? The sigh that became the breeze that became the storm, blowing through uncomfortable minds, and long hours of hard labour became the hand that fed the greedy flame, the burning desire dying to get out and express itself. Thoughts, matter and motion. The memories of home, the tons of bend and shaped metal surrounding them and the endless drifting through empty space filled with perils beyond belief. Was this the dream of the undiscovered, far and away, that had reached out to touch their souls at night? Surely not, and upon returning to the Nevada, on every face he saw, on every man and woman, Roman saw the tale of his thoughts translated in all signs and languages in the universe. Since even when no one spoke and all were quiet, one word still went through the corridors and across the decks: a murmuring sigh saying 'home'.
OOC: Sorry for not coming up with something more constructive. I haven't been able to come up with some good ideas for a while...

OOC: It's a hard working ship. Although we will give you oppurtunities, you need to write yourself into the story, or it will run away from you. Right now we are hundreds of thousands of light years away, so your best bet might be to post that you are onboard starbase assailant as we will be arriving there through this gateway soon.
Will post later today, and that post shouldbring us through the gateway, although we will still be some distance away from the starbase. Goo to have you onboard, hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

As soon as they had arrived at the starbase, it was clear that the evacuation would have to be carried out immediately. The organic systems that helped to run the base were far more affected than the crew of the Nevada had expected. On arrival, the newly rejuvenated T’Fat had declared that the base would lose structural integrity within a couple of hours, and that all crew would have to be moved off the alien base. So it was, that now as the captain of the Nevada walked slowly through his own ship’s corridors, he was having to step over people, walk around groups of aliens, and generally get quite irritated. The emptied cargo bays and spare quarters had been filled within minutes, and now the personnel were just bein placed wherever there was spare room, which was, unfortunately, the corridors and other communal areas. No crew dared to go to the mess hall any longer, as they knew that as soon as they entered they would receive a variety of cheers, curses and pleas for further help. Unfortunately for Captain Jira, he was receiving far more of this than any crew members, and he had had to leave the peaceful sanctuary offered by the bridge to meet with the shuttle crew, who had reported difficulties in the shuttlebay. As soon as he stepped into the bay, Jira could see the problem. The shuttle was surrounded by people clamouring to be let on, to be taken home. The team inside couldn’t even open the door for fear of been overrun. Harrias glanced around, until he found the small shuttle he was looking for. No one paid him any attention at all as he clambered onto it (in a way most unbecoming of a Starfleet captain.) Once on top, he turned to the mass of people. - “Could I please have your attention?” He bellowed, his voice echoing in the large chamber. He waited a while for the noise to lower, and then continued. “I know that many of you are scared. You have lost loved ones, you are far from home, you don’t know if you have been infected with the virus. I know that you want to leave this ship, that you feel we have kidnapped you.” The noise levels rose again as people shouted at him, agreeing that they had been kidnapped. “HOWEVER.” They quietened once more. “However, our only aim is to treat you all, to make sure you are not infected, and then to let you leave. This will take time though, and it will be best enacted if we can return to our starbase where we will be able to treat you all quicker. To do this however, I will need the members of my crew that are within that shuttle.” From the crowds there was a lot of whispering and conversation, and then a tall woman stepped forward. Harrias was instantly dazzled by her. She looked almost human, her stance perfect, her hair long, dark and flowing. He had to blink twice to prevent himself from staring too much. When she spoke though, her voice was melodious, and entrancing. - “Captain. We thank you for your hospitality here, and we appreciate the offer of medical aid. However, there are many of us that are immune to this virus, it has afflicted these worlds before, and our people have survived full blown contact. There is no need to keep us here. We demand that we be allowed to leave.” - “To whom do I speak?” Jira asked quietly. - “Diris, First Ambassador to the Machar Confederacy. I speak for all here.” - “Ambassador, I can appreciate your position. To be held when you are certain that you are in no need of assistance must indeed seem pointless. However, by scanning you, and the others among you that are immune, our scientists may be able to formulate a cure to this virus. Furthermore, if I did allow you to leave, I would have no way of telling which among you were immune and which are not. I am afraid I can not allow it. Your best and only hope of leaving this vessel is to return my crew members to me.” - “In that case Captain, I regret to inform you that we will be holding your crew hostage until such a time as you see the wrongness of your position. And I suggest you leave here while you still can.” Harrias Jira looked around the room at the crowd. He could see that already they did not want him to leave, but Diris recognised that he had to be allowed to leave, as only he had the power to make the decision to let them go. Accepting that right now his crew were safe, if not happy, he dropped down off the shuttle, and out of the bay. He quickly locked the door after him, not wishing to think what would happen if the rabble inside were allowed to explore the ship. A few minutes later he had returned to the bridge, his face the picture of pure anger. He motioned to Frek at the helm. - “Mr Thelev. Into that portal if you would.” The andorian looked somewhat dismayed at the order. Although he had doubtless heard that it should take them home, he was probably getting somewhat tired of going through portals into the unknown, but hopefully this time, this time it would not be into the unknown. This time, the journey through the gateway/portal/wormhole/black hole was almost timeless. Indeed, some of the crew members seemed not to have realised that they had travelled through, and Jira definitely heard Bonar comment to another person; - “Where did it go?” - “Frek, our position?” The helmsman took a few seconds to double check what his console was saying, but Jira could tell from the beam of a smile on his face that it was good news. - “Alpha Quadrant, Bertreka Sector.” A large sigh of relief was felt across the whole of the ship. A ship loomed before them. Less than an hour later, Frek spoke over the comm system. - “USS Nevada, requesting clearance for approach and docking.” - “Nevada, this is Assailant, you have permission to dock. Please bring your vessel into dock 6.” --- In the shuttlebay --- Talla knocked his head lightly against the wall of the shuttle and left it resting there. Using the ship’s external cameras, they had followed the captains speech, and the resulting impasse. The small team inside the shuttle were caged in like animals. Already, they had tried using the transporters at the rear of the small ship, but the safety protocols had overridden their demands, claiming that using them inside the ship would be too dangerous. Try as they might, they could not seem to close the safeties off. Already, Grace had spoken to them, presumably with the captain’s permission. She had pressed images into Roman’s mind, showing the jubilation in the corridors, the happiness, and then a message that they would try to get the team out. Already, the marines were preparing, but Jira didn’t want any casualties, he was hoping the aliens would see sense when they had docked at assailant. Lt Vicente had passed this all on with a mixture of pleasure and sadness. OOC: Okay folks, we’re home. I will post this also on Assailant, and hopefully Magellan will be able to give us a pointer and the part we will play in the fleet mission. Until this time there is still plenty to do. We have to oversee the moving of the evacuees from the Nevada to Assailant, the medics still have to work on a cure, although it would be better if it isn’t found . The crew of the shuttle need to see if they can formulate a way to escape on their own. If that isn’t enough for anyone, then they can scrub the outside of the ship, because I’m getting depressed with having a dirty ship…

Magellan watched Deis departt and then returned to his desk. "Sir!!!" Magellan looked up as Zoilip apppeared in the Ops doorway to his office. "Its the Nevada." "Shes here!!" he answered leaping to his feet. He appeared at the master operations table in a matter of seconds just in time to hear Frass assign them to Berth 6. "Any word on their status?" "Only that they have Sickbay on standby - multiple casualties" teh Regulan reported, "Multiple!" Magellan repeated "Page Dr Mercy - ensure hes on hand, and wake Admiral Drew, have him report to Ops at his earliest convienence." Zoilip paused his blue bifurcated face cautious, "Sir you only just sent Admiral Drew back to his family an hour ago, he ll no doubt be asleep by now, especially after..." "I m well aware of the Zoilip, that why i said wake and earliest convienince not even I would expect some one to report in their night clothes. Though theres always a first time. Whens your shift end again?" he grinned at the bolian. F'rass interrupted their banter sidling up beside them, "I m getting a message from Captain Jira" "Put it through to my office" Magellan replied, returning to his small space. "Harrias good to see you I thought we d lost you for good. And with one of my ships too." Harrias smiled, except his grin was tight, one born from weariness and loss. "It looks like things were tough. Forget the formal report just give me the highlights." Harrias nodded in approval and began to relate their adventures since their disappearance from known space. Magellan listened carefully and nodded and frowned at the appropriate points. He perked up at the mention of the artifact. "Thats most interesting." he replied at the conclusion, "Sounds like we have something here. I ll not explain now, I ve arranged a briefing for tommorrow at 0900 hrs in confernece lounge 3. Have your senior staff attend. Till then get your people sorted and get some rest - Fr'[word deleted] can sort you out. Magellan out."
OOC: Okay JM is go. Posting for the meeting will take place on the Fallen Angel thread on the Assailant board
