Steve opened his eyes and and saw a plain white wall. He turned his head sideways, and realised that he was lying on a couch somewhere. Feeling no pain, or dizziness, he sat up and found out he was in his ready room.
'Why am I here?' He thought, slightly confused. 'And more to the point...what was I doing asleep in here?'
Steve stood up, stretched and approached his desk. He knew nothing too major could have gone on, otherwise he would have been notified...sleeping or not. But then to that end, he also knew that their mission was still ongoing for the same reason.
He walked towards the door to the bridge, took a deep breath and walked through the newly opened doors. He knew the crew's eyes would be on him, but he wasn't going to let that bother him. Instead, Steve approached his command chairs, and in particular Arya.
Bending down to speak to her quietly, he rested on the arm of his chair. "A couple of things." He said to her. "First of all, whats the latest report?" As Arya opened her mouth to reply, Steve cut in, "But before that....how did I wind up asleep in my ready room?"

The shuttle was having a rough time getting through the upper atmosphere .. He watched as the pilot, one of the Security Officers, expertly guided them downward ..
"I have the Montgomery on sensors Sir." he said suddenly.
"Any life-signs ?" David asked.
"I'm reading .... Nine .... With one being Vulcan."
=^= Shuttle Faraday to Olympia =^= said Tan
=^= Go ahead Faraday =^= replied the Exec'
=^= Any word from the Montgomery crew .. We've got the shuttle and life-signs close by .. But no contact =^=
=^= Nothing Lieutenant .. We must assume they have been captured =^=
=^= Understood .. Faraday out =^=
Tan closed the comms, he had little choice now but to get in there and hopefully be some help to those captured .. He hoped the Olympia's crew-members could in some way help out ...
"Right .. Try to set us down as close to the Montgomery as possible." he said, then turning to the others, "Set weapons on heavy stun .. We can knock then out and sort out who's who when we're through !" David said, adjusting his own weapons as a chorus of "Aye Sirs" came from the others as they followed suit ...
A clearing, barely the size of their shuttle, was the only landing option within a thousand meters. Trying to stay on the blind side of a structure topping the tree-line, the pilot, Lieutenant Dawson, headed there, then dropped the shuttle vertically through the trees .. It was a tight fit, overhanging branches were hit by the door as it swung open ..
David looked out, then raised his eyebrows in appreciation.
"Nice landing Lieutenant."
"Thankyou Sir ... Piece of cake ... As they say." said Dawson, discreetly wiping the beads of sweat from his brow.
"Which way ?" Tan asked.
"That way Sir .. One hundred and seventy meters." said one of the others, "The raised structure we noticed on the way in .. They're in there !"
"Raised ...?" David said, puzzled for a second, "Some kind of outpost maybe .. Similar to the old Earth Ranger stations."
With Dawson leading, they headed toward their goal ...
~~~~~~~~~~
On three of it's sides, the undergrowth had reclaimed the land, trees almost touched the walls here. But the other side, containing the entrance, had been kept relatively clear .. Avoiding open spaces, the group edged round the structure until they reached the open side ..
"Any signs we have been detected Ensign ?" asked Tan.
"None Sir .. I doubt they even know they have company."
Trained for this, two of the Security Officers took 'point', edging forward and entering the building through the open doorway. David followed, along with the other two Officers .. Inside, there was a staircase, but also a lift of some sort, for freight maybe. Either way, they were using the stairs, the noise from the lift would give them away instantly ..
Double-checking their weapons' settings, they began to slowly climb ... Hugging the walls on either side as they moved forward. Cautious as they reached each ninety degree turn on the stairway, but still making steady, silent progress ..
Lieutenant Dawson, along with a second Officer, were only two meters from the upper door when it began to open !
" ..... it will have blown open with the wind again .. I'll bet you .. We should just block it shut." the newcomer said as he turned to head down the stairs ..
He didn't get chance to say anything else, as the beam from a phaser rifle hit him in the chest .. Dawson shot forward to catch him before he hit the ground, then placed his unconscious body behind the door ...
Everyone held their breath as they waited for a sign they'd been detected .. Thankfully, non came .. The rooms occupants simply thought their companion had gone down to close the outer door .. They HAD to move NOW !
David nodded to Dawson, who slowly, firmly, grabbed the still ajar door and began to ease it wider open ..........
‘This is the life’ Jason thought, as he slammed his chest into the packed dust floor, hoisting the phaser rifle off his shoulder and pointing it towards the complex. They weren’t very well concealed, but the terrain didn’t exactly lend itself to secrecy. It was little more than a ridge, with straggly dry grass bushes lining the top. Still, it would do for now.
“Lose your gear lads.” Black ordered, already unstrapping his utility vest and peeling it off his shoulders. As he was doing so, Sergeant Conway sprinted in towards him at a crouch, practically throwing his body on the ground beside his superior as to avoid detection by the guards. Black looked for a status report.
“Three guards at twelve o’clock, Hawk has already dealt with the other two.” He reported.
Jason nodded, and swivelled round to talk with Braga. “We’re not going to have much time, there’s guards everywhere. We need to find out what we’re up against.” Braga gave a short nod. Black was beginning to like this guy. “Team A will take out the perimeter guards. That leaves Conway and I to requisition the third for, uh, questioning.”
The execution went like clockwork. Sniper training on the holodeck seemed to have paid off, and two of the guards were down without even knowing about it. Their limp bodies were removed with great efficiency, leaving Jason and Conway to move in on the remaining. He was a Vulcan, and naturally strong, but both marines were highly adept. With an arm locked around the culprits neck Jason forcibly dragged him back over the ridge.
“Search him, make it quick.” Jason ordered, as he bent down and dug through one of the kit-bags. Anton readily joined in here, stripping the Vulcan of anything that might be able to help them. There was a communication device of some kind, and small hexagonal link of metal about two inches long, and a small phaser. The navigation officer looked them over in detail, before pocketing the lot. They would probably come in useful later.
Meanwhile Jason had found what he was looking for, and carefully unwrapped the field hypospray kit he had unearthed. With two of his men who most closely resembled polar bears holding down the Vulcan’s arms, Jason forced up the mans sleeve and pressed the syringe to his skin.
“Hey, what are you doing?” The doctor interjected in a shrill whisper, grabbing Jason’s wrist forcefully. He gave her a stern look in the eye, trying tactfully to shake her off. She didn’t look like she was going to let go.
“It’s the quickest way.” Conway said gently.
“I don’t care, you’re not torturing him in my presence.” Doctor Melain insisted more loudly.
“Look,” Conway said again, moving between the doctor and the Vulcan captive. He took hold of her shoulders firmly and spoke close to her. “Rio is in there somewhere, and the Ambassador too. It is our job to find them.” He tried to soothe her.
“Get on with it” Black ordered quietly, pressing the trigger and injecting the mixture into their captives bloodsteam. He wasn’t quite sure what was in it, and it worked quickly enough to keep him wondering. As the Vulcans body slowly became paralysed with pain, the bear-like men loosened their grip. They had to make this quick.
“How do we get inside?” He snapped at the man. The Vulcans eyes flickered with pain. “Its only going to get worse.” He reminded him.
“Key. He’s got it.” He said quietly, indicating Anton with his eyes. The navigation officer rummaged in his pockets for a minute before producing the small metal item and holding it up for him. The Vulcan nodded.
“And security?” The Vulcan gritted his teeth. There was no way he could hide the pain.
“Single guard, stationed at each entrance point on each floor.” He told them.
Black nodded. “One more thing. Where is the marine you captured?”
The man took a long time to answer. He really didn’t want to. “Basement…level…holding cell.” He slurred slowly.
“That’ll do me.” Black decided, and gave the nod to one of the bear-men who administered the antidote. By this time Doctor Mellan had wriggled out of Conways grip and rushed towards him. Black made no move to stop her, but Braga made sure the men had clear orders.
“She can see to him, but keep him close. We may need more information. And make sure he cant use his hands” He stated, leaving no room for mistakes. The men nodded, and Jason hoiked up his rifle, ready to move in.
Arya wanted to ignore the question about him being asleep in his ready room, but knew better. She decided to give him an update about what was going on first as she returned his chair to him.
"Well, we have arrived at the location where our ambassador should be. I have sent down an away team in a shuttle craft. The other shuttle is close by and is making a rescue attempt of our missing Marine," she said wondering how to tell him he fell asleep on the bridge and was moved because he was lightly snoring. She smiled and tried not to laugh remembering her shock at hearing him before seeing he was asleep.
"You fell asleep in your chair, and the snoring might have caught someone else's attention if you hadn't been moved. I would have woken you, but I thought that unwise," she said cautiously not wanting to anger him. Suddenly the away team contacted them. They spoke for a few minutes before leaving them to what they had to accomplish.
"Well, if that doesn't bring you up to speed, I don't know what will," she said teasing her CO a little. She smiled leaning back in her chair.
"I want to know where they are at all times," she ordered and recieved an 'aye' in return.
Lieutenant Dawson signaled using gestures only, to Tan .. Their people were in the room, they were up against the far wall, and seemed to be bound .. There was only two of the captors in the room, they were on the left side, with their backs to the door, but still armed ..
David had little choice, There could be others on the surface, he didn't want to risk being out-numbered .. Silently, he motioned for the Security Officers to go in .. Quietly ..
Rio and the others, including the Vulcan Ambassador, saw Dawson as he edged further into the room. Rio looked at the captors, they were still deep in conversation, she nodded to Dawson to continue .. Dawson and Tan, along with two of the security team were almost fully into the room, when someone brushed against the door .. The one degree further that it opened was one too many .. The door creaked !
Tan, along with Lieutenant Dawson, hit the floor and fired, hitting both of the captors. But not before the officer beside Tan disappeared, as the beam from one of the captors weapons vaporized him instantly .. Tan was stunned for a split-second, before he moved to un-tie the Ambassador, Dawson doing the same with Major Jackson ..
"Are you OK Ambassador ?"
"I am .. Are we now leaving ?" he asked.
"Yes Sir .. We are." then turning to the others, "Lieutenant Dawson .. Secure those two and lets get out of here." Tan saw Rio plant a well aimed kick to the ribs of one of the captors, then roughly shake him to consciousness, before binding his hands. Then they headed back down stairs and cautiously, into the open.
Over the next thirty minutes, they made their way back to the waiting shuttles .. As they powered up, Tan contacted the ship ...
=^= Tan to Olympia =^=
=^= Olympia =^= ... Tan was relieved to hear the Captains voice, but to David, he sounded strained, he was about to find out why ..
=^= Captain .. We have the Ambassador and our people .. We suffered one fatality .. We are about to leave the surface =^=
=^= Make it quick David .. We have picked up three ships on the edge of our sensors ..They are heading our way at high warp .. It's 'touch and go' who will reach us first .. Them .. Or you ! =^=
The Comm broke with the Olympia and Tan contacted the Montgomery ..
=^= Lieutenant Dawson .. We need to leave .. NOW .. Lift off and lets get back to the ship =^=
Both shuttles rose from the surface .. While on the Olympia .. The Captain, and his Executive Officer, watched the view-screen as the tactical view showed the three ships getting closer by the second ..........
Mere moments seemed like lifetimes as Steve stood watching the three vessels approaching the Olympia. As it stood at the current moment in time, the vessels could not be identified, so Steve had no idea whether they were friend or foe. 'This could make things VERY complicated.' He thought, sighing heavily.
He turned to face the rear of the bridge. He looked towards the Tactical station and saw an Ensign at the station. Steve didn't have a clue who he was. 'I've not long been on this ship....can't expect to know everyone already.'
"Tactical, do what you can to find out about those ships and inform me the moment you have anything...the sooner, the better." Steve ordered.
"Aye sir." Came the nervous reply from the Ensign.
Steve turned back to the viewscreen and watched the vessels steadily approach. Just as he was about to take a seat in his chair, a voice called out from behind him.
"Sir, the incoming vessels appear to be Vulcan, and they are on a direct intercept course with us."
Steve felt a little better knowing they were Vulcans and not a hostile force....but that thought feeling last long.
"And sir.....they have their weapons powered up and fully loaded."
"WHAT??" Steve shouted, making everyone jump. "Do they not know who we are?" He said rhetorically. "Hail them." He ordered.
"Hailing." came a female response. It sounded like Arya. He turned to his right, noticed she wasn't there, then looked towards Ops, where she had taken up station. 'Ah yes, something she used to do on the Raven.' He thought, recollecting why she would be at that post.
"I am not receiving any response, Captain." She added.
"Damn....keep trying." Steve replied, and took a deep breath and quickly ran through his options. "Shields up, Yellow Alert." He ordered before tapping his combadge.
=/\= Captain Smith to Lt. Tan. David, it looks like things may get a bit heated up here....how soon before you get back to us? =/\=
Watching, as both the Montgomery and Faraday inched from the surface, Tan was worried they were both way over-loaded .. both shuttles were crammed to the door with personnel .. He glanced at the Ambassador, hoping not to convey his concerns, but he seemed deep in thought and didn't even notice ...
=^= Captain Smith to Lt Tan .. David .. It looks like things may get a bit heated up here .. How soon before you get back to us ? =^=
Tan looked at the pilot, who shrugged in resignation that he simply didn't know ..
"With this weight .. Eight .. Ten minutes maybe." he said, after checking his read-outs.
=^= Olympia to Faraday =^= the Captain said ..
=^= Sir .. It is going to take us Eight minutes to reach the ship =^=
=^= We are about to have company David .. What kind .. I don't know .. You have 'Six' minutes to get back up here .. Olympia out =^=
The Comm closed, Tan looked at the pilot once again ..
"Yes Sir .. I heard." he said, and began to push the Faraday for more speed .. Less than fifty meters away, the Montgomery watched her sister shuttle begin to move ahead and followed suit ..
"Sir .. I have the shuttles on sensors .." said the Olympia' Opps Officer, "At their current rate of assent we will have them in six minutes."
"How long before those ships are in range ?"
"Five Sir .." she said.
Arya watched, as her Husband and Captain thought the problem through .. Steven knew that he couldn't run and leave the shuttles. but to stay and engage three ships that most likely out-gun him three to one, wasn't the best option either .. then a thought occurred to him. A long-shot maybe ...
"By how much can we safely reduce our orbit and still retrieve the shuttles ?"
The Opps Officer ran a few calculations, then replied ..
"We could drop ten thousand meters before the Olympia began to feel it .. But at that height the shuttles would have a rough landing due to the turbulence .. 'If' they managed to get into the shuttle-bay at all." she said.
"Reduce our orbit by .. Ten thousand meters ..." Steven ordered.
The Bridge was almost completely silent as the Navigation Officer began to send the Olympia to meet her shuttles ..........
Tan was worried .. So, it seemed, was Lieutenant Dawson, piloting the other shuttle .. =^= Montgomery to Faraday =^= =^= Faraday .. Go ahead Lieutenant =^= replied David. =^= Sir .. We're struggling to make height .. I can't see us making orbit at this rate =^= =^= Just keep going .. The Olympia is on her way to help us .. Use all axillary power you need .. Including 'Life-support' if need be .. We must get to orbit =^= said Tan. Seconds later, he gave a wry grin as he saw the Montgomery begin to pull ahead of them .. His good cheer was short-lived ... "Sir .." said his own pilot, "We're getting a power drop-off .. We took quite a battering as we came down to the surface .. Maybe that's causing it .. Either way it can't be fixed from in here." "Do what you can Ensign .. We need the Ambassador on the Olympia .." .......... ~~~~~~~~~~On the Bridge, Steven watched the oncoming vessels begin to put distance between each other .. 'typical attack posture' he thought. "Captain .. The Faraday is dropping back from Montgomery." "WHAT !" Steven almost shouted, then after a second to think, "Where are the shuttles right now ?" The duty Navigation Officer checked her reading's, then turned to speak .. "They are still ahead of us on our present orbit .. But we are catching them up fast .. If we can't take both shuttles aboard this orbit it will mean another one .. Especially for the Faraday .. She's already one thousand meters below Montgomery ..." "Increase our rate of decent .. Reduce our final orbital height by five thousand meters." the Captain ordered. "Sir .. I'm not sur ......" the Nav' Officer began, but he cut her off ! "Do it ... NOW !" he said, "Please." Steven noticed the Navigation Officer glance at the Exec' for a split-second, but before he could comment, she turned and increased the angle of their downward journey .......... < tag : ALL > OOC : Come on everyone .. Lets keep this going OK ..
Up on the Olympia bridge, time seemed to be going extremely slow. The Shuttles Montgomery and Faraday were slowly approaching the ship, although Faraday seemed to be dropping back. That wasn't good....especially with the Vulcan ships still bearing down on them.
=/\= Olympia to Faraday =/\= Steve called into the comms
=/\= Tan here sir. =/\= came the reply.
=/\= David, I see your shuttle is dropping away from the Montgomery. Is there a problem? =/\=
=/\= We seem to be experiencing a power drop-off. As yet, we do not know why. =/\=
=/\= Understood Lieutenant. Do what you can from there, and we will get to you shortly. Smith out. =/\= Steve replied, and cut the communication.
Just then, the bridge rocked. The Olympia was entering the planet's outer atmosphere and the ride was going to get bumpy.
"Everyone, hold on." He called out to the bridge crew. Mere moments later, the navigation console beeped and Steve approached to see that the ship had reached the altitude level that he had ordered. Thinking of the sake of the ship and everyone else, he knew that they could not go any further into the atmosphere without damage to the ship, and this being the Olympia's shakedown, he wasn't prepared to do that.
The shields were holding steady, but Steve knew that the Olympia couldn't stay in this position for too long for 2 main reasons.....one, the shields would eventually fail and the ship would break apart... and two, the Vulcan ships could easily open fire on them if they stayed long enough. Suddenly the Ops station beeped, and Steve spun round to see what it was. Arya was there and looked to him.
"Shuttlebay One reports the Montgomery has landed and is secure. Apparently they look a little bit shaken up." Arya said, and stared into Steve's eyes.
"Well, that's one." He replied, and looked back at the navigational panel. The Faraday was still too far out, and the Vulcan's were ever closing. Steve quickly went through all the options in his head...and there wasn't many left.
He went and sat in his chair, in serious thought. Resting both arms on the chair's arms, he sat forward. "Prepare the tractor beam." He commanded. "Lock on to the Faraday and engage with full power when ready."
Mallen had managed to switch shuttles before takeoff in order to care for the most critically injured-- Rio and the Ambassador. She was still a bit shaken from witnessing Marine-style torture, but not so shaken as to prevent her from doing her job. It was a bit funny, really: she dealt with blood and injury every day, but she had never been able to stomach violent interrogation. She scanned Rio's body with a medical tricorder and smiled grimly.
"Two cracked ribs, one fractured arm, and a broken nose. Much better than I expected," she informed her patient.
"What were you expecting, Doctor?" the marine asked, curious.
"To be honest, I expected to have to raise the dead. Knowing you, you've probably had worse injuries than this before, correct? As it is, though, you're going to have to stay away from your more... exciting... holodeck programs for a while. And I mean it this time." Kiral insisted on this, even though she knew that her medical advice would probably be ignored yet again.
She cleaned the blood off of Rio's injuries and injected a serum to help the wounds start clotting. Rummaging through her medical kit, she also selected a painkiller. "There's not much else I can do here. We'll have to wait until we get back to the Olympia. Your condition is no longer life-threatening, though. If you'll excuse me, I must tend to the Ambassador now."
The Vulcan's injuries were far less severe, so she concluded that the attackers had wanted him alive. He could be immediately treated with basic medical equipment, so she went right to work with her painkillers and her trusty dermal regenerator. She would examine him more closely upon arrival on the Olympia, of course, but for the time being, he was fine.
It was clear now that the Faraday wasn't going to reach orbit ... Tan was scanning the terrain below, looking for a suitable landing site, when the pilot shouted .. "Sir .. Up there .." he said, pointing above them, "It's the Olympia !" There she was .. Almost two thousand meters above them, but getting closer every second .. Tan made an instant decision .. "Take Life Support off-line .. Reduce artificial gravity to a minimum .. Throw every last bit of power we have into the engines ..We're going home." David said, grinning. "But what if we don ......." "No 'what ifs' OK ..." Tan interrupted, hopefully reassuring them all. =^= Olympia to Faraday =^= =^= We're here Sir =^= replied Tan. =^= We can get you David .. But you need to be closer to us .. Gain what height you can and we will do the rest .. It is going to be a rough ride so get everyone ready .. Good luck Faraday =^= The Comm went dead, and Tan did as ordered .. After what seemed like an eternity, a tractor beam slammed into the Faraday. The vice-like grip, relentless, as it pulled her in .. The noise and vibration were horrific, the shuttle simply wasn't build to take this sort of battering .. Fractures began to creap across the roof and walls. Then suddenly they were lurched sideways, as the port nacelle was torn from her, spiraling down toward the surface of the planet, making the shuttle twist in the beam .. The Olympia tried her best to compensate, but they were too close. They were traveling much too fast now, and going in at a steep angle .. Tan watched the force-field as they passed through, then a second beam grasped them, this one to prevent the runaway shuttle from simply leaving through the back wall of the bay .. Everyone was thrown about like rag dolls inside the Faraday, Tan saw the console coming toward him, fast, then thankfully, he began to slip into a soothing blackness .. He didn't hear the Shuttle-bay tell Captain Smith that they were aboard .. He didn't hear the Captain shout "YESSS !" on the Bridge .. Tan was already unconscious .... On the Bridge, the Captain decided to sit back down before giving an order he'd waited almost too long to give ... "Helm .. Get us the HELL out of here !" The Olympia powered her way back into her natural environment, Space .. Then, finding a heading to take them away from the on-coming ships .. Leaps into Warp ! .......... < tag : Captain / Kiral / All > OOC : Ok .. We're all back on the Olympia now .. So lets avoid getting blown to bits by those ships, and get the Ambassador back to Vulcan ..
Kiral felt the tractor beam grab the shuttle and started to frantically pack her medical supplies into the med kit. She kicked a few of the healthy crewmembers out of their seats to give the injured room to sit down. The last thing she needed was for a wound to reopen or for a rib to crack further during a rough landing. Unwilling to look at the viewscreen to see what was going on, she instead forced herself to keep looking around at her patients.
Someone in the front yelled “Hang on!” giving her just enough time to grab onto a handle on the ceiling before the second beam caught them. If she hadn’t been holding on, she would have easily been knocked off of her feet. As it was, the sudden stop nearly ripped her arm out of its socket. Her immediate thought was that she would be treating many complaints of whiplash later.
The doctor heard, rather than saw, Lt. Tan’s head hit the console with a dull thud. Mallen rushed to his side, her tricorder already in hand. She scanned his head, cursing aloud. “Something wrong, Doctor?” one of the men asked. Mallen whipped her head around to give him the special sort of stare that she used to mean, “Are you kidding me?”
“This man had a mild concussive injury only a few hours ago!” she explained. The man raised an eyebrow, not sure how this could be such a bad thing. Kiral hated to waste any time explaining herself, but obviously she would have to in this circumstance. “That is a brain injury, you know. Even a mild concussion can be deadly if one suffers from a second head injury in such a short period of time. If I don’t treat him immediately, he could lose key brain functions. I need you to help me get Lt. Tan to sickbay. Now.” She turned and looked back on the rest of the shuttle. A few other people were bleeding or looked dazed, and she hated to leave them behind, but there were more important things at hand.
=/\= Mallen to Sickbay =/\= she called, tapping her combadge.
=/\= What do you need, Doctor? =/\=
=/\= Send someone down to the shuttlebay. Anyone. I don’t care. We have some mild injuries, but I have other things to deal with. =/\=
=/\= Right away, Doctor Mallen. =/\=
=/\= Oh! And whoever’s still up there, set up the biobed and find me a neurostimulator, a neurosynaptic relay, a neuro sequencer… any other concussive treatment tools. It had better be ready by the time I get up there. I’m on my way now. =/\=
There was no reply, which Mallen took to be a sign that they were already working on their assigned tasks. With the help of nearby security officers, she loaded Tan’s unconscious form onto a stretcher and took off for sickbay.
As the sickbay doors opened, one of her nurses was there with the neurosynaptic relay, and they wasted no time in attaching it to David’s head. It immediately began transferring data to a medical console. “Brain activity is erratic, Doctor,” she was informed.
Mallen used a neurostimulator. “No effect, Doctor,” she was notified. “Activity is definitely slowing down.” She increased the frequency and tried again. “It’s working, to a degree. Activity is still irregular, but key brain functions are being restored.” The doctor attached a neuro sequencer to regulate electrical impulses in the brain, and sat back and watched brain activity return to normal. Then, she woke her patient up.
“Good news,” she announced. “You’re not going to be brain damaged. You will, however, be wearing that neurosynaptic relay for a few days, and, like Rio Jackson and Captain Smith, you will not be participating in any rigorous physical activity.”
Saying this, she looked around sickbay and noticed what she hadn’t before: one of her patients was missing. “Nurse Lorra, I need to know when you released the Captain from sickbay so I can put it in his medical file.”
The nurse smiled guiltily. “Well… we don’t know exactly when he left… he… snuck out. We noticed several hours ago, just after you left… and he insisted upon not returning to sickbay.”
“Well, if he suffers any permanent damage, he’ll only have himself to blame,” Kiral grumbled. “Nothing to worry about, though… keeping him here was only a precaution…” She made a mental note to not let it happen again. “Now get me the Osteogenic Stimulator. That Marine is going to be in here any moment with cracked ribs that I have to fix.”
Arya watched and reported as soon as she had anything good to report. Things were definately not what she expected as her first mission in command. She sighed when all was well and everyone was back aboard.
Arya returned to her seat and the Ops officer took over the station. She sat back and closed her eyes realizing it had been awhile since she had last slept. She didn't say anything and opened them again before Steve saw what she was doing. She pulled out one of her many padds and started to read some old report just to be doing something.
She was taken by surprise when the baby kicked, and jumped just a little bit. Realizing what was going on then, she settled back in her chair relaxing as the crew did their best to get them to Vulcan.
"Helm, how long before we reach Vulcan?" she asked just wanting the report. She hoped for a nice ride with nothing to hinder them.
"Eight hours, seven minutes, thirty seconds, and..." the officer reported giving too exact of an answer, so she cut him off.
"That's good enough. Eight hours would have sufficed," she said finding herself a little annoyed.
After being treated for mild concussion, then resting on a bio-bed for the last five hours, David had simply had enough .. He was just fine, and wanted to return to duty ..
"Nurse .. Could you get Doctor Mallen for me .. Please."
"Is there anything I can do for you Sir ?" asked the nurse.
"No .. No thank you .. Just get me the Doctor."
Several minutes passed, Tan thought he was being ignored for most of them, but then, obviously in no great hurry, maybe knowing what Tan was going to ask, the Doctor wandered over ..
"What can I do for you .. Lieutenant ?" she asked, her eyebrows raised questioningly.
"You can let me out of here and return me to duty please .. We're almost at Vulcan."
"You took a nasty knock on the head David .. I'd much prefer you to stay over-night .. For obser ......."
"I'm OK Kiral .. Promise ..."he interrupted , "Besides .. If I feel the slightest bit unwell I can always come back down here." he finished, hoping his grin would win her over .. But the Doctor thought very hard, for almost a minute, before replying.
"OK .. BUT .. Take it easy for now .. This should hold off any aches and pains." she said, using a hypo-spray on Tans upper arm as he sat up, "The first sign of nausea or dizziness .. I want you back here .. Understand !"
"Yes .. Ma'am .." David replied, already half way to the door .. Then he was out and heading for the turbo-lift .. Kiral shook her head, 'They never learn' she thought to herself with a wry grin.
"Nurse .. Log Lieutenant Tan as 'Discharged' .." she ordered, tapping her Comms badge ..
=^= Sick-bay to Bridge =^=
=^= Go ahead Doctor =^= said the Captain.
=^= I have discharged lieutenant Tan .. He's no doubt on his way up there =^=
=^= Thank you Kiral .. Bridge out =^=
Steven looked at the massive view-screen idly, 'Still no sign of those other ships, where are they ?' he thought to himself ..
The turbo-lift doors opened and Tan entered the Bridge.
"Lieutenant Tan .. Reporting Sir."
"Good to see you back Mr Tan .. Time to arrival at Vulcan ?"
"Two hours eleven minutes Captain." David replied, before checking for pending status reports ..........
Steve was sat in his command chair reading over some crew reports. 'Two hours..' He thought, 'Not long until we finally get this over with.'
He was glad that Lieutenant Tan was back at his post. He'd been an extremely valuable crew member since the joined the Olympia. Turning next to him, he also noticed that Arya was no longer there, and a quick glance at Ops told him she wasn't there either. 'Perhaps she is either working in her office, or resting in her quarters'
Two hours out from Vulcan, and still no sign of the other two ships. Normally Steve would be happy that they were gone, but on this occasion he was feeling very cautious, and he was sure that they would turn up again soon.
He went back to working on his reports, seeing as it was a perfect opportunity to get them out of the way. When he was almost done, he checked on the ETA to Vulcan....less than an hour.
'Ok, let's do this' He thought and stood up. "Mr Tan, would you join me in my Ready Room?"
David, along with the Captain, had been busy clearing reports that had mounted up during the last few days. He wasn't surprised when his CO got up and headed for his ready room, he 'was' surprised to be asked to follow him .. The Captain was known for saying what he had to, despite sometimes, having an audience .. So something was obviously 'up' ...
While Tan was wondering what issue could could involve him, a duty Bridge Officer ominously appeared, obviously waiting to relieve the COO .. So he had little, or in fact, no choice, but to follow the Captain off the Bridge ...
Once in the ready room, Tan was told to take a seat .. Steven sat at his desk, reading something on a PADD he'd brought in with him ..
"Sir ... Is there something wrong ?" David asked, getting more and more nervous by the second .. Smith held up a hand, Tan would have to wait a moment longer, it seemed ... Then, happy with the information on the PADD, Steven confirmed it's contents, before placing it on the desk between them and raising his eyebrows questioningly ...
"Wrong ?" Steven asked ..........
Once Steve had finished with the PADD, he put it down and echoed David's question,
"Wrong?" He said, knowing that David had dropped himself in it. When you ask a question like that, there are bound to be consequences.
"Yes, there IS something wrong, as a matter of fact." Steve added, looking stern. David sat in silence, not moving. "I am not happy." Steve carried on, "Not happy at all."
David gulped, and didn't dare move or look away.
"You wanna know why? I'll tell you." Steve said, and got up out of his chair. He began pacing behind his desk. "I am not happy that you have worked your backside off since you have joined this ship, and REALLY helped us with this mission..." Steve then stopped suddenly and turned sharply towards David, "...all the while wearing the rank of Lieutenant. That just will not do."
Behind one of the PADD's, Steve slid a small box across the table towards David, and had a smile beaming across his face. "So, you have left me with no choice, but to grant you promotion to Lieutenant Commander."
He began to walk round to the front of the desk, with David still sitting there, not sure of what was going on.
The Ambassador barely needed further medical treatment than what Mallen had already provided, and Rio would be fine as soon as the osteogenic stimulator repaird the cracks in her ribs. The doctor insisted that Rio stay in sickbay for the night for the process to complete itself. Besides, this way she could also keep an eye on the marine and make sure she didn't instantly run off to get herself killed on the holodeck.
Kiral relieved most of her nurses. They had been working hard, and the next shift was due in a couple of hours. Until then, she wanted to take some quiet time to look at some data, update some files, and maybe fill out a log entry. She ordered three cans of Goombay Punch from the replicator (so she wouldn't have to keep getting up for more) and sat down at her desk.
She considered it a successful mission. She had been pleasantly surprised by the low casualty rate, and she had done her job. Leaning back in her chair and yawning, Kiral Mallen looked around sickbay, and sighed at how dull and boring the place looked. She idly wondered if the Captain would let her paint the walls bright yellow...
(OOC-- This'll be my last post until I get back from Spring break in a week, but it looks like we're wrapping up, so at least the timing is good! I'll jump right in again as soon as I return!)
Still shocked at the announcement, David took the small box from the Captain .. Opening it, he looked at the gold and gold/black pips denoting the rank of Lieutenant Commander .. Tan stood and shook the Captain's out-stretched hand. He'd never expected the meeting to be for this, a promotion was the last thing he'd have thought of.
"Congratulations .. Lieutenant Commander." Steven said.
"Thank you Sir .. It's .. Well it's unexpected ..."
"Unexpected it may well be .." the Captain said, returning to his chair and sitting, "But it's most definitely deserved !"
As David placed the new insignia on his collar, Steven started to ask for his thoughts on the Shakedown mission so far, but they were interrupted ..
=^= Bridge to Captain =^=
=^= Go ahead =^=
=^= Sir .. The Vulcan High Command has just confirmed our request to go into orbit .. They have sent a ship to escort the Ambassador and ourselves in =^=
=^= OK .. 'Commander' Tan and Myself will be out in a moment =^=
There was a seconds hesitation before the duty Navigation Officer replied with 'Aye' and broke the Comms.
Steven stood, compelling Tan to do the same ..
"After you .. Commander." he said, motioning toward the door, grinning.
The Captain and his Chief Operations Officer entered the Olympia's Bridge, and saw the Vulcan Homeworld on the view-screen ..........
As Steven and David watched, the Vulcan Starship, Tal'Kir began to move ahead of them, suddenly rotating through one hundred and eighty degrees and slowing to a halt in the Olympia's path .. Steven ordered full stop and was about to ask what the hell was going on, when the Vulcan's contacted them .. =^= Starship Tal'Kir to USS Olympia =^= "Open a channel." the Captain said, puzzled, as the screen showed the Commander of the ship in their path. =^= Captain .. My name is Vanik .. I must apologize for our unusual step .. But I must insist the Ambassador be transported to our ship immediately .. We will take him to Vulcan =^= =^= What ! .. Have you any auth ... =^= Was all the Olympia's Captain could manage to say, before he was interupted .. =^= There are .. Considerations .. You are not privy to Captain .. And I must regretfully insist that you send our Ambassador .. Immediately =^= An Ensign had moved over to whisper to David, as the Captain was talking .. The Captain was needed in Sick-bay ... David moved to stand next to his Captain, then signaling for the Comms to be muted, he spoke quietly to Steven .. "Sir .. You need to go down to Sick-bay .. Now." David said in a whisper. "What .. I can't leave the Brid ......" "Sir .. It's Arya .." Tan interrupted, "She's had some sort of fall .. Doctor Mallen is worried about her and the baby .." It was obvious that the Captain was torn between his duty as Commander of the Olympia, and his need to be with his wife .. With David's assurance that he could sort the issue out with the Vulcan's, he persuaded Steven to go to be with his wife, and unborn child ... "Give them the Ambassador .. Then get us the hell out of here and heading for home !" Steven said defiantly. Then with a glance at the Vulcan on the screen, left the Bridge .. David signaled for the Comm to be re-opened .. =^= Captain Vanik .. Captain Smith has been called away .. I have been instructed to beam the Ambassador to your vessel .. I must stress that Captain Smith will be speaking to his superiors about this once we return to Starbase Bellicose =^= =^= That .. Is his prerogative .. Commander .. We are sending the co-ordinates now =^= David contacted Commander Halthor, instructing him to accompany the Ambassador to transporter room two, and beam him over to the Tal'Kir ... Several moments later, Vander confirmed his arrival on the Vulcan ship .. =^= Thankyou Commander .. There is now no need for you to enter orbit .. Live long .. And Prosper .. Tal'Kir out =^= The view on screen changed to the massive Vulcan Starship. It again rotated on her axis, then moved away gracefully, heading for it's home planet ... Tan watched for a few seconds, then sighed .. "Helm .. Plot a course for Starbase Bellicose .." "Plotted Sir." said the duty Navigation Officer. "Then lets go .. Warp four .. I'll be in Sick-bay .." David said, already at the turbo-lift. "Aye Sir." To confirm of his order, the Olympia smoothly turned to face the right direction, then leapt into warp. Arrowing toward home .......... ~~~~~~~~~~The journey back to Starbase Bellicose was quiet .. The Captain had divided his time between trying, without any luck, to get answers for the Vulcan's' behavior, and sitting at his wifes bed-side .. He left the day to day running of the Olympia, to his Chief Operations Officer, hardly setting foot on the Bridge during the last few days .. Arya was in no danger now, but Doctor Malen had requested she be taken from active duty for the duration of her pregnancy. After some long, quiet, and very private talks, Steven and Arya decided that it would be best if she stayed on the Starbase, at least until their baby was born .. They could talk about her future then ... All approach confirmations were now in place. On the massive view-screen, Starbase Bellicose gleamed in the far off sunlight .. She was a very welcome sight to everyone .. David knew the Captain wasn't eager to arrive though, it would mean his wife would be leaving the ship .. Steven would have some time with her, as the Olympia wouldn't be heading out again for maybe weeks. But at some point, they would have to say goodbye .. Tan had left contacting the Captain until the last possible moment, but he tapped his Comms badge and spoke now ... =^= Commander Tan to Captain =^= After a short delay, Steven replied. =^= Go ahead David =^= =^= Sir .. We have arrived at Bellicose =^= Tan stated simply. =^= Get us docked please Commander .. I'll speak to the crew shortly .. And David .. Thankyou =^= "Take us in for docking." David ordered the Helm .. As they neared the massive Starbase, the dock-master ordered them to shut down their engines .. Tractor beams gently caressed the ship and guided her to her assigned berth .. Umbilicals were connected, along with walkway's and other services ... =^= Docking complete =^= said the Dock-master. =^= Thankyou Dock .. Out =^= replied Tan ... The Olympia was home ..........
Well....what else needs to be said? Yes, the Shakedown cruise is over, now to rest up on shoreleave and post on the Bellicose thread. I will post IC telling you all to take a bit of leave pretty soon.
Thank you all and well done on a (in my opinion) successful first mission for the Olympia. Our first mission proper will start within the next couple of weeks....perhaps sooner, but I will keep you all posted!
Keep it up everyone, I am proud of you!
S. Smith (Capt)
