---------------------------Minerva Engineering-------------------------
"Dr. Reckus just gave me an update on the ship's status. Repairs are certainly coming along, but it needs to go faster. I can try to get some more crew from the other two modules, if that helps," said Hepta over the comm-link.
"Not necessary, sir," Sarah replied. "I can just have Commander Jacobson reassign some people. He may be commanding Discordia right now, but he's still the Chief Engineer."
"Understood. Get right on that. Hepta out," and the channel closed.
She went to a console. "Computer, open a comm channel to Commander Jacobson on Discordia module."
"Channel open," the computer responded a moment later.
"O'Malley to Jacobson. You busy, Nephi?" she asked, knowing the answer already.
"Always," he replied simply. "What can I do for you, Sarah?"
"I know you're busy running a module, but could you have either Carl or Alma reassign some people over here? Admiral Hepta wants to speed up our repairs."
"What's your repair list include?" he inquired.
"Structural integrity, impulse engines, warp drive, shields, weapons...and others," she answered
"Alright. I'll ask Carl, as Mercury's the least scathed right now."
"Thanks. O'Malley out."
------------------------Mercury Engineering------------------------
"Jacobson to Jenkins," came the simple hail into Mercury's Engine Room.
Carl tapped his comm badge. "Here, Boss. What can I do for ya?"
"Can you spare some damage control teams, and repair teams to send over to Minerva to help Sarah out? Hepta wanted her to shorten her repair time, and you don't have much to fix over there from what I see," Nephi observed.
"Sure. We've only got the tractor beam left to repair, and that won't take much more, or many people. I'll send over everyone I can."
"Excellent. Jacobson out," and the channel closed.
"Right then," Carl said. "Ranktor, Borene, round up your teams and report over to Minerva to help them out," he said, addressing his Damage Control Specialists.

~Time for work~ Nick thought rolling over in bed a few hours later. He flopped out and wandered into the shower. Minutes later he emerged and put on a brand spanking new uniform.
"No holes!" He chuckled to himself. His old uniform lay in a heap on the floor. ~I'll frame it later~ he thought to himself. He checked his newly trimmed hair in the mirror and hopped out the door.
"Bridge," the computer recieved his command and began it's ascent to the bridge. A couple sections along the way shuddered as evidence of hull damage. ~Gonna have to fix that~ he thought to himself, the engineer within him never left. The doors pinged and opened to reviel as smoky debris laden Bridge.
"Martens reporting for duty," He saluted the Admiral and took his new duty station, rather old and charred duty station. The computer earlier that night had sent him his new assignment as Navigations officer.
"Navigations," he had muttered to himself. That position had to be one of the dullest in the fleet. Helm go here, helm go there. The thought made him shudder. Now here he sat, at the helm, wiping soot off his screen. His ears perked up listening to the Admirals conversation with Sarah down in Engineering.
"Umm sir if I may," he turned around.
"Go ahead Commander," Hepta said.
"I know this ship inside and out, better than any of the engineering crew. That includes Nephi. Not to gloat though."
"Is that so?" The admiral inquired.
"It is sir, being that I designed her. Sarahs my old crew chief and I'd like to help. It's not like the ship is able to move very far anyways."
"Sounds like a novel plan. Check in with O'Malley. She needs all the help she can."
Nick slipped out of his chair and was replaced by a fresher looking acting ensign. A new face since he was last on board. ~I'm sure there'll be more~ he thought stepping onto the turbo lift.
~~~~~
"Masters, the stream ends just above your head," Sarah yelled up the jefferies tube next to her dead monitoring station.
"This one?" came the muffled reply, followed by a beep at her station saying power was back.
"Yeah, thats the one." Almost as soon as she replyed another station sparked and went blank. "Damn!" she blurted. Engineering was a mess. Electrical conduit lay strewn everywhere, under panels, over panels, draped over consols and railings.
"What'd you do?" she yelled back up the tube.
"Nothing!" came the reply. "It just shorted out again."
"Maybe you should try this," came a voice from behind her. She heard a few bleeps and clicks then stations started turning on. She turned around to see Nick standing there with a wide smile on his face. "You had a redundant data loop happening due to the computers power loss. You just needed to reset the system."
"I thought you were going home," she said, obviously outwitted again by her former boss.
"Plans change, Cardassians needed some company." He chuckled. "Can I be of service? Coolant ducts need cleaning, boots scrubbed, floor swept?"
"Actually I could use some help. Let me get a repair padd for you."
'That will help considerably. We're pulling Minerva right now, and unless their hull's repaired we can't pull them at warp. And status reports I've gotten say it'll be hours before they can Warp under their own power.'
'It depends on what you want them for. Currently the Derisak Cardassians have the status of allies, but will let me act as captain under consent. Basically we can ask them to help, but we can't ask too much of them and I don't think they'd be willing to put themselves in direct danger.' Jared told Jacobson
'See what they're willing to do then' came the reply
Jared returned to his Ops station to contact the Derisak. It had remained nearby, but with enough distance to have a good head start on the Ghemore should it go after them.
'Gil Dulak, the Minerva ship is still damaged from the Ghemore's attack. How much assistance is your crew prepared to give?'
After a brief consultation with the bridge, Dulak explained the extent of assistance they would give.
'That might help, I'll contact the Minerva's captain'
Jared did as he said. Hepta was still on the bridge and seemed quite happy despite the situation.
'Admiral, the defected Cardassian ship is volunteering to send damage teams to assist in the repair. They have about 50 engineers they could send, but they would have to be treated as allies and not enemies. Are you willing to receive them?'
When Sonak woke up a next time, she had the feeling several hours had passed. She still felt the pressure of the oxygen mask on her face, but otherwise she knew by just listening that she was no longer on full life support. Naturally, she still felt weak, even though she'd had several hours of sleep though it was sleep filled with nightmares.
Slowly, she lifted herself, resting on her elbows and winced as she did so. Her body, from the abdomen down was extremely painful, as well as were her hands and wrists. Sickbay was spinning on its own axis as she gazed about. ~now what was this with Doroch Moon Station~ she thought, and as she thought it, she knew she had to get to one of the laboratories, preferably astrometrics, to see whether there was any truth in the dreams she'd been having.
As she gazed about, she saw Caldwell pacing in the CMO's office, appearing to be in deep thought. Most of the holographic staff seemed to be disengaged, and the nurses were otherwise engaged. Sonak smiled painfully and raised her arm to tap her combadge. Quietly, she whispered her command codes, and a second later she shimmered out of view, and re-appeared in astrometrics. As she materialized in the same position she'd held when she was in sickbay, she knew she had to find a way to get onto her feet, as for some odd reason her legs wouldn't carry her weight.
~must be a drug or something~ she mused, smiling as Caldwell had probably anticipated her trying to do this. She reached up to the nearest console and grimaced, gritting her teeth as she pulled herself up and into a seat. Slowly, she called up the information the database had on DMS, and encountered a picture of the female Vulcan captain that had appeared in her dreams. "Now what was our business there," she wondered aloud, as she pressed the respirator to her face, gasping for air. "Evidently something happened while we were on our way there, and caused us to end up in MVA mode. And it wiped our memories from the point of where we left Starbase Bellicose. We have a flag admiral, a retired section admiral at that, aboard, and even he does not remember what he is doing here."
She looked up when someone suddenly appeared beside her, and gave her an odd look. Suddenly very conscious of her attire - a knee-length sickbay gown - she gazed right back at the young man. "Can I help you?" she asked, speaking slowly as though it was costing her much energy to even think up the right words. (which in fact it was)
"Can I help you?"
Ed shook his head in disbelief, a smile appearing on his face. "I was about to ask you the same thing"
Sonak seemed to be annoyed about her situation and determined to not let it stop her, "I am merely carrying out an investigation. It should not stop you working."
"Right, right. But it should, I believe, stop you working."
He had to say it quickly otherwise the words wouldn't get out his mouth in time. He stepped back to watch her reaction.
"Why shouldn't I be working then?" She asked, trying to make herself look as much like a Captain as possible.
"Okay, so I realise that normally I rank so far below you that it's unreal. And you probably have no idea who I am. But unless something really weird is going on, you're signed off for medical reasons at the moment. Which means you can't order me to do anything, and I can tell you to get out of this restricted area." Ed closed his eyes and turned round, hitting a few buttons as he did so.
"But..." Sonak dematerialised and reappeared in sickbay.
Ed smiled a satisfied smile and tapped his commbadge, "Tanner to Caldwell, she's back now. The procedure notes were perfect."
=/\= Thanks for your help, I'm increasing the restrictions in here now I finally have proof they're needed. Caldwell out. =/\=
Jatan nodded, glad he could leave the severely damaged bridge. He was aching to get back to Mercury, even though Caldwell had sent him away. "Thank you admiral, I quite agree. I just wish she'd be a little less stubborn as well."
Then he noticed Nick. "Ah Nick, welcome back," he said, but didn't smile. His eyes held a sad look as he regarded the former first officer. "Meet me when you're off duty, we've got to talk."
<Martens>
<Hepta>
"Very well admiral, I'll be back on Mercury." Jatan dashed off the bridge and hurried towards the nearest transporterroom. "Mercury, sickbay," he told the chief. Once back there, he hurried himself over to the isolation ward, only to find the bed emtpy. "John!" he roared, storming into the CMO's office, "where is she!"
Caldwell looked up from his work and frowned at his chief. "Sir?" he asked, then understood. "Oh...that time again huh. I'm sure she'll be beamed back soon. We've taken a few precautions." He grinned, and pointed back at the ward, where the Vulcan commanding officer was just being restrained. "She won't try that a second time, believe me. Go see her, and do please talk some sense into her."
Jatan nodded grimly, and stalked back into the ward. "Just what the hell were you thinking?" he asked, as he stepped out of a nurse's way, "don't you ever think about us? You could've killed yourself by wandering off. As a doctor, you ought to have known that!"
"Done ranting?" Sonak interrupted him irritably, clearly annoyed at being beamed back. "I have discovered something, just as this young man had me beamed back." She nodded towards a PADD that one of the nurses had confiscated. "Take that to Commander Jared and have him pass it on to Kanz and Fox."
Jatan just stood there in open-mouthed amazement, then nodded. "As long as you promise me to rest, and not try to get out of sickbay again." He glowered at his bondmate. "Promise me Sonak," he insisted, as he picked up the PADD.
"Very well," she sighed, "I promise."
Jatan nodded in satisfaction, and took the hypospray from the nurse. "Just in case you change your mind," he said, as he pressed the tip of the hypospray against her throat, and injected it's contents. She fell asleep instantly, and Jatan knew that she wouldn't wake for several hours.
"I'll be on the bridge," he told Caldwell, how in turn glowered at him.
"You're off duty," the assistant CMO retorted.
"I am indeed, but I have some information to pass on. After that I'm going to look after the kids."
"Very well," Caldwell nodded, "and I'll know if you haven't done as you promised."
Jatan nodded, and headed for the bridge. "Commander Jared, my wife asked me to pass this on to you. Could you please inform L'Ola and Fox?"
"I can't explain why we are, maybe we reacted on a distress call or something. But i know for sure we would never make such a detour, unless in the utmost need."
Nephi looked at the display. "Yes, but we've moved. Can you extrapolate where we were when we came to?"
Fox nodded, and after a moment, another dot appeared. It was somewhat closer to a course between the two Stations, but still noticeably off. "Hmm, yes I see what you mean. How's our long-range sensors?" he called out.
"95% efficiency," Vasati responded. "Good enough for the usual, but don't expect the more exotic anamolies."
"Fine. Scan for any ships within range that are damaged or emitting distress calls," Nephi ordered.
A few moments later the report came back. "Theres a Bolian freighter about half a lightyear away, emitting a faint distress signal. Looks like they had a run-in with something large," Vasati reported.
"Like maybe a Cardassian warship?" Nephi proposed.
Vasati paused, scanning. "Possibly, but there are none in its vicinity."
Nephi activated the comm system. "Jacobson to Kanz. L'Ola, we just found a Bolian freighter emitting a distress call about a lightyear away. We're not sure, but it may be related. I would recommend we pursue, tho we're in no condition to do so while towing Minerva."
-¦- Scene: USS Vesuvius-A, Minerva Module, Bridge -¦-
<snip from Reman> 'Admiral, the defected Cardassian ship is volunteering to send damage teams to assist in the repair. They have about 50 engineers they could send, but they would have to be treated as allies and not enemies. Are you willing to receive them?' </snip>
Hepta didn't particularly like Cardassians. Never had, certainly not since the war in the seventies. They were untrustworthy, shifting affiliations in the blink of an eye, faster than a Malgodian swamp snake shed its skin. More often, too. But even swamp snakes had their good points, if you knew how to handle them.
"We can use the extra manpower, Commander," he said. "We'll watch them, though. Inconspicuously, but we will watch them."
"Admiral, if it's inconspicuously enough, they'll never notice."
Lt. Leavitts happened to be on the bridge at that time, paying full attention to the exchange. Hepta looked at him and tapped his wrist. Hardly anyone still wore a watch anymore, but the gesture had stuck from earlier days. Leavitts held three fingers up in response and already started for the turbolift.
"Give me three minutes, Commander." The Cardassians would probably wonder why there was a delay. They might even assume the true reason--they would, more likely than not; they'd treat the Federation just the same way--they might do that, but as Jared put it, if Leavitts's men did it right, the Cardassians would never notice. "I'll have our transporter chief contact you when we're ready. Minerva out."
<Leavitts/Jared?>
For some reason, that made him think of Bolians. But what had they to do with Cardassians? Or with trans-- He sighed, shaking his head at his sluggish mind. Of course, that's where the connection lay. He'd had a Bolian head transporter chief for years back when he was still a Captain. A good man, if perhaps a bit too careful. He never wanted to push his equipment beyond the safety thresholds. But there was more with Bolians... Or rather, not more with Bolians, just more Bolians. Slowly, memories came back to him. A ship, fighting. Some piece of cargo. For him? A nebula, looking for cover.
"Bridge to Cmdr. Martens. I need you back here right away." Hepta had to tell Sonak, and he had to now. It seemed an eternity before Martens arrived, and Hepta wasted no time when he did. "You have the bridge, Commander. I'll be on Mercury."
He stepped into the turbolift just occupied by Martens and shot down to the nearest transporter room. Seconds later, he was in Mercury's sickbay. His arrival didn't go unnoticed by Dr. Caldwell.
"I need to talk to her," Hepta said.
"She's asleep," Caldwell replied. "She needs rest."
"She needs to hear what I have to say." Hepta wasn't going to let Caldwell win this one. "Wake her, doctor."
Caldwell seemed to realize Hepta was serious on this one. The doctor walked over to where Sonak lay, sleeping peacefully. She awoke with a start when Caldwell emptied a hypospray into her neck. She tried to sit up when she saw Hepta, but she was still restrained to the biobed.
"Easy, Commodore," Hepta said. She didn't look like she wanted to be, but she had little choice. "I'm regaining some memories." She nodded; quite likely, she was beginning to remember things, too. "A Bolian freighter, Doroch Moon station. I had to go there, and so had the Bolians. I think they were bringing something I needed. They were attacked by Cardassians." He paused, trying to piece together what had happened next.
"We came to the rescue," Sonak added. "At least, I think we did. But there were too many Cardassian ships. We were looking for cover. A nebula?"
Hepta nodded. "A nebula. I'm not sure we ever made it there, though. And still no idea how we ended up unconscious. But it's a start."
<Sonak?>
Sonak nodded, blinking against the bright lights in sickbay. "A nebula," she repeated softly, "but an advanced ship like this not making it safely to cover? How is that possible? Was it a trap, maybe? Were we lured here?" She gazed up at Hepta, while trying to get a little more comfortable. She no longer was in much pain, but moving still was a littel troublesome, especially when being strapped to a bed.
She shot him a look of sheer annoyance. "I wish they would not do this," she told him, "I am quite all right, and there is nothing wrong with my mind. I am quite capable of thinking clearly, even if my body will not co-operate with what I want it to do." She closed her eyes briefly, then gazed directly at Hepta. "What is the status of the Cardassians? Have Gul Ra and Legate Zoril been taken into custody?"
Sonak was yearning for some information, as nobody in sickbay was inclined to tell her anything. She presumed that both Caldwell and Jatan had told everyone off on that. She bit her lip, and fought back tears as she remembered Jatan's exploding anger, directed at her, earlier. "Something else is going on," she finally said, her voice no more than a whisper. "Admiral, what are they not telling me? What happened, after I was beamed back?"
<Hepta>
Finally she raised her head up as far as she could from the bed she was strapped down on and gazed directly at Hepta, tears forming at the corners of her eyes. "I am sorry," she finally whispered, even though she couldn't quite fathom what exactly she was sorry for. She just felt he need to express it.
'Give me three minutes, Commander. I'll have our transporter chief contact you when we're ready. Minerva out.'
Jared called up the Derisak after the three minutes. 'They've accepted your offer, but be careful. The crew don't much like Cardassians so don't wander off to somewhere you're not supposed to be' 'Understood' Dulak replied.
During the three minute wait, Jared had been given a PADD from Sonak. Now he looked over it. It was somewhat muddled in writing, more like a system of notes than a proper report. However, it did give a few useful facts. It mentioned the destination, Doroch Moon Station and the Commanding Officer, Savel. Jared looked up the station on the ship's database.
Doroch Moon, also known as Dorw'I; orbits a class M planet (see Doroch). It is inhabited by the males of the local species due to...
Jared scanned on.
The area has been contested by both the Federation and Cardassians. Recently there has been local unrest over the Federation support of equal rights for males...
The article as a whole didn't give much of a clue over why Hepta would need to be there besides possible to negotiate between the two or three sides.
Jared uploaded the article onto the PADD and went to find Kanz with it. <Kanz>
At about the same time, the Cardassian engineers began arriving on the Minerva. They were lead by Gil Marell, the Cardassians' assistant CEO. He sought out the highest ranked Starfleet officer present. 'More will be coming, but our conditions of assistance are that we are treated as allies. I don't want my men in groups of less than five. You are welcome to send Starfleet engineers to assist my crews since we are less used to Starfleet systems.'
<whoever the highest ranking officer there is>
~Not back more than a couple days and bam! I'm back in the center seat~ Nick thought to himself as Hepta scurried off to the transporter room. The chair hadn't changed much, mind you his rutt was gone. He wiggled himself into the chair a few times to rebuild his spot.
"There," he muttered.
"Sir?" one of the ensigns queried obviously over hearing his delight.
"Nothing to worry about," Nick looked up in surprise. The ensign smiled.
"Good to be back?" he asked.
"Indeed, now get back to it or else," he poked his finger towards the ensigns station. The young ensign smiled and went back to his work.
"Sir there is a Cardassian Officer asking for you," the communications officer reported.
"Patch it through," He hit a button and the image of a Cardassian standing in the transporter room came up.
'More will be coming, but our conditions of assistance are that we are treated as allies. I don't want my men in groups of less than five. You are welcome to send Starfleet engineers to assist my crews since we are less used to Starfleet systems.'
"Very well. Head down to engineering. Commander O'Malley is waiting for you. She has a list of repairs needed to be completed. Welcome aboard Ally." Nick said. The Cardassian bowed, a kind smile on his face.
Spark flew across the bridge of the Ghemore. Gul Ra has just made his way back to the bridge to see the escaping Federation ships, followed closely by a Cardassian ship.
"What happened?" Gul Ra yelled.
"They had found a way to penetrate our shield."
"Is that so," Gul Ra said taking his seat, "Modulate our shield frequency and set an attack course for the Derisak. Engage the cloak, and this time fool do not decloak to fire."
The Ghemore activated it's cloaking device and instantly disappeared from the sight.
"Vent ion out of our port side, and head for the Cardassian boarder at full impulse." Gul Ra ordered
"But sir, you just said."
"I know what I just said fool! Do you job or you will die." Gul Ra yelled back.
The Ghemore as ordered turned around venting plasma as it turned around and headed back toward the Cardassian boarder. After several minutes Gul Ra ordered the ship to stop venting plasma and to turn her back around and head toward the Derisak as full impulse.
"We should go to warp."
"They will be able to pick up our warp signature. Do they not teach you anything on Cardassia, besides how to fire a phaser?" Gul Ra said with disgust, "Those traitors are going to die." Ra whispered to himself.
Sarah looked up as a whole crowd of engineers came into the room. She recognized them as being from Mercury. Ranktor and Borene were at their head.
"Glad to see you guys," she said. "I assume you were transfered over to help?"
"We were," Ranktor said. "Where do you want us first?"
Sarah started to hand them a duty PADD when a whole group of Cardassians came into the room. The one in the lead said, "We were asked to assist you in repairs. We have an agreement with one of your superiors that we be in groups of no less than five."
Conveniently, there were five of them. A second group of five came in. Sarah turned to Ranktor and Borene. "Would your teams be ok without you? I want you two to supervise the groups."
"No problem," Ranktor said, "we've both got assistants of course."
"Excellent," Sarah replied.
Curling herself up in the command chair, L'Ola looked at the view screen. It showed a picture, but not the picture she wanted to see. She just wanted to know what was going on. Something told her that she knew something important, but there was so much stuff running round her head that nothing made sense.
Jared arrived on the Bridge clutching a PADD. "Well we've got some background information at last. Curtesy of Commodore Sonak.
L'Ola hit her hand against her head, "Why am I not surprised? As long as they have her restrained in sickbay now, we might as well use the advantage."
"Exactly. From what I can tell the mystery centres round Doroch Moon Station. Although exactly where our Cardassian friends come into all this is still unclear."
"How are our Cardassian friends at the moment?" She asked.
<Jared>
Looking extremely nervous, Ed walked round the corridors and headed towards sickbay. He looked in cautiously, before stepping inside and asking to see Sonak.
Obviously prepared to do anything to keep her there and 'relaxed', Caldwell agreed.
"Um, hi, ma'am."
Sonak looked a little confused. "What is happening?"
Ed smiled, "I just wanted to come and apologise for having to send you back here. Strict orders and all that... plus it was kind of fun..." His voice faded out as he became nervous again.
"That is okay. I realise that it was not your idea." She glared in Caldwell's direction as she said it.
"So, how are things going in here" The scientist relaxed a little and became his usual self, "Getting bored yet?"
'How are our Cardassian friends at the moment?' Kanz asked 'I'll check' Jared replied. In the sort of lucky circumstance that only occurs in poor fiction and real life, Jared checked his ops station in time to see the Ghemore disappear. It cloaks?!? Jared thought in surprise. He saw the vent of ions coming from the ship and then stop. There was no way that could happen without a warp signature. Which meant it was a ruse. Which meant that the ship would be going after... the Derisak. 'Derisak, run!' Jared shouted down the comm link. 'Move between us and where the Ghemore was' he ordered the current pilot and begam scanning for signs of a cloaked ship.
The pilot wrenched the ship around in a tight arc to the needed position, throwing the intertial dampners off balance. 'Jared, what's happening?' came Kanz's irritated or surprised interjection 'The Ghemore has cloaked and is after the Derisak' Jared replied
At that moment there came a sound and a judder like a bussard collector smashing against the side of a large Cardassian warship. This was mainly because the bussard collector on the starboard side had crashed into the cloaked Ghemore. Out of the invisibility of the two ships came several small pieces of debris like a giant smashed tail light and bumper.
'Fire on that spot!' Jared ordered the tactical officer. The officer unleashed a volley of torpedoes and phasers at the Ghemore and apparently the Ghemore had the same idea, although the Mercury had to decloak to fire. The ship shook as the Cardassians removed yet more of the starboard warp nacelle with their own weapons. Several crewmembers were thrown about but fortunately the Cardassians had fired too early and hadn't achieved a good hit so far.
'Use a figure eight pattern and keep us cloaked when not firing!' Jared ordered. Fortunately the Ghemore was large and damaged enough from the previous attack to leave a faint trail even in cloak, unlike a smaller Romulan ship. The Derisak was long gone into warp. However, Minerva had half the ship's engineers on board so they would have to come back sooner or later.
The pilot brought the ship around and the tactical officer locked the weapons onto the Ghemore. 'Discordia, we need assistance with the Ghemore, it's cloaked and hostile' Jared said down the comm to the other module as the Mercury swept into the attack.
Jared realised he was the one giving the orders now and Kanz hadn't spoken. Looking around he saw her laid out on the floor. 'Someone take Kanz to sickbay'
-¦- Scene: USS Vesuvius-A, Mercury Module, Sickbay -¦- -¦- Time: Before Ed's visit -¦-
<snip from Sonak> "What is the status of the Cardassians? Have Gul Ra and Legate Zoril been taken into custody?" </snip>
"Unfortunately not," Hepta replied, grimacing. "We very much wanted to, but it would've been a bad idea with all the damage we'd taken. We did get in a few good shots, though." Just not good enough. The only good Cardassian ship was a destroyed one. "Last we saw of them, they were on their way back to Cardassian territory. Venting plasma, but that could be a trick."
"Do you think they'll come after us again?"
"I'm quite sure of it. But the repairs are proceeding rapidly, so we'll be ready if they reappear." And he wouldn't let them get away a second time. Or a third, as it seemed.
<snip from Sonak> She bit her lip, and fought back tears as she remembered Jatan's exploding anger, directed at her, earlier. "Something else is going on," she finally said, her voice no more than a whisper. "Admiral, what are they not telling me? What happened, after I was beamed back?" </snip>
Hepta was afraid that question would come and he didn't want to answer it. She deserved to know she'd actually died, but he didn't think he should tell her. Her husband should.
"I don't know, Commodore," he said, all too aware that even if it wasn't a flat-out lie, it wasn't the full truth, either. He turned his gaze away, pretending to study the readouts above her head. Someone had to tell her, but not him. Damn it, he was just an old man! If he'd had any sense, he wouldn't even be here. A wonderful plan Starfleet had, setting up a task force at Doroch Moon Station to keep the increasingly annoying Cardassians in check, and very kind of them to ask him to command it, but he really should have declined.
<snip from Sonak> Finally she raised her head up as far as she could from the bed she was strapped down on and gazed directly at Hepta, tears forming at the corners of her eyes. "I am sorry," she finally whispered. </snip>
"No, I am," he said, with more force than he intended to. Someone had to... No, it wasn't right. He'd have a word with Dr. Reckus, but that was all he could do. And old man, that was all he was. He really should have stayed at home. He really... Damn it, but his mind was sluggish today. How could he have missed that just yet? He cleared his throat. "Commodore, I just remembered why we were going to Doroch Moon Station. The Cardassians are getting more and more active in the surrounding systems and Starfleet is setting up a task force to restore peace and quiet."
"And you will command it?" she asked. Hepta nodded. "But what about the Bolians?"
Hepta didn't get a chance to answer that one, as he got knocked off his feet when the inertial dampeners failed to compensate some rather severe course changes. He pulled himself up on Sonak's biobed and held on through the rocking that followed. The ship had engaged in battle, but who was the enemy? The Ghemore couldn't have caught up this fast, could it? Had the Derisak perhaps turned against them? Fortunately, it was easy enough to get an answer to those questions.
"Hepta to bridge. Report!"
Something didn't feel right as she opened her eyes. Like the fact that she was opening her eyes for instance. She ran her hand across her head and felt a bump. That explained the waking up thing. But how long had she...
The module rocked and Lucy leapt to her feet. She could get her head checked over later. The best place to find out what was happening would be the Bridge, and luckily she wasn't far away.
Things weren't in good shape when she got there. Lucy decided to stand by the Ops console as no one else was there while she took a look around. She was more than a little surprised to see the person in Command.
"Nick? What are you doing here?"
He grinned, "Commanding a module. What does it look like?"
"Okay, I'll pretend this is normal. Do you need an Ops officer and what'd going on?"
Ensign Jackson stepped out of the turbolift and walked onto the bridge having just woke up from 6 hours of restless sleep.
He was eager to find out what was going on and what he should do.
Ron made his way over to his console, entered his security code and then turned his attention to the situation at hand.
Whats going on?
Ron asked expecting a response from whoever was in command
<whoever is in command>
John Caldwell resolutely stepped up to Hepta and tapped him on the shoulder. "Admiral, I'm going to ask you to leave now. You've clearly upset my patient, while I clearly told you not to upset her. And please, refrain from shouting here in my sickbay."
<Hepta>
"No Admiral, you're going to leave, and well this minute. You may be an admiral, a retired one at that, but in this sickbay, while the CMO is off duty, I have the final say. Out!" He gently shoved the old admiral in the direction of the door. "You may come back later, when she's calmed down."
<Hepta>
While the admiral grudginly left sickbay, muttering something intelligeable to himself, Caldwell turned back to his patient. "You musn't upset yourself so," he said quietly, as he stared at her with a frown on his face, "you'll only hamper your recovery. Now, what is upsetting you, other than being strapped down?"
The assistant CMO bent over his patient to loosen the restraints somewhat to allow her some minimal movement. "If you promise me to rest, I'll remove them in an hour," he promised, "but I must have your word."
Sonak nodded at him, as tearst still streamed down her cheeks. "I want to know what happened to me," she said quietly, "something has happened, and you nor Jatan are telling me. I have had the strange sensation of dying, and the last I recall is being stabbed in the abdomen, and immense pain."
John looked thoughtful for a minute, debating whether not knowing or knowing the truth would upset her more. Finally he decided that telling her the truth would be the least upsetting. "I'm not sure if you want to hear this," he started, as he dabbed her tears away with a tissue, "but when you were beamed aboard, you were clinically dead. You had lost a fair amount of blood, and you were suffering from massive internal bleedings." He paused briefly, before continuing. "We are fortunate that you donate blood on a regular basis, otherwise we would not have been able to save your life. Thanks to quick thinking of Commander Jared, you were beamed directly to sickbay."
Caldwell paused again and swallowed. He knew how devastated Jatan had been when he'd given him the news, and he had no way to tell on how the Vulcan commanding officer would react, since she had her own unique sometimes very unVulcan way of reacting to things. "There is something else," he said hoarsely, as his voice trailed off.
Sonak gazed at him, her eyes wide in confusion. If she had died, how come her katra hadn't been lost? "Please continue," she whispered, almost begging, "I wish to know everything."
Caldwell gazed down at his patient, and rested his hand on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. "You lost your child," he whispered in return, "the blade which killed you, also hit the foetus and killed it instantly. I'm sorry, there was nothing I could do to save it. You were about three weeks pregnant, did you know that?"
Sonak shook her head sadly. "No, I did not know I was pregnant," she whispered back. Strangely enough, the news of losing her child didn't have as much an impact as the news of her dying had on her. "Does Jatan know?"
Caldwell nodded. "He's griefstruck," he explained softly, as he squeezed her shoulder, "you are taking it much better than he did. But, of course you are Vulcan where he is not. Now, I want you to rest as much as possible, and we'll see to you having a little walk about sickbay tomorrow, as well as a visit from your children. In the mean time, I'm going to have someone seek for someone with counselor skill among our crew. You can hardly counsel yourself."
Sonak smiled weakly. "Thank you, also for telling me the truth," she said, then closed her eyes. A few seconds later, her breathing evened out and Caldwell knew she was sleeping. He walked into his office. "Caldwell to Jared. I need a favour," he called, after opening a comlink, "I need you to go over the crew manifest and find me someone who's qualified as a counselor. Look for both enlisted and civillian counselors, and if you've found one send him or her to sickbay."
Syal was looking around, totally bewildered by what was happening around her. She didn't have much of an idea of what was going on, as she was only a civilian. Looking up, she saw a blonde man walking around as though he was looking for someone. After making a few enquiries - she noticed to Bajoran women - he looked over to her. A feeling of dread flew through her.
She arched her eyebrow as he looked at her and squinted. He walked towards her.
"Are you Mira Syal?"
"Yes, I am, and hello to you too, Commander...and you are?" She replied rather scathingly at the younger man.
She thought she saw the as yet un-named Commander roll his eyes before responding. "I am Commander Jared." He replied shortly. "It says here - " He lifted a PADD "- that you are qualified as a Counsellor?"
Syal's face blanched slightly. ~I knew I shouldn't have filled out that questionnnaire...~
"I'll take that as a yes" He said dryly.
"Yes, I am qualified, but as far as I can tell you need a Doctor more than a Counsellor." She said, looking around her.
"A Counsellor is needed in Sickbay. If you would be...good...enough to help us, then we shall be very thankful."
Syal considered this briefly for a moment, and fiddled with her earring. "Alright." She said. "But this isn't going to be permenant, ok?"
She thought she heard Jared say something under his breath, but missed what it was, although she had a general idea but chose to ignore it.
However, he nodded his head and smiled ever so slightly. "I shall inform Sickbay of your arrival, if you'd be so kind as to make your way there. Do you know where it is?"
Syal nodded. "I believe so..." she nodded again to him and set off for sickbay.
~All I wanted was a quiet life...but the Prophets seem to have something else designed for me...~ She sighed.
"Discordia, we need assistance with the Ghemore, it's cloaked and hostile" came Jared's voice over the comm.
"Acknowledged, Commander," Nephi replied, then turned back to the Tactical station. To his surprise, an Acting Ensign he had never seen before.
"Whats going on?" the Ensign asked.
Nephi walked over. "I assume you're the new Chief Tactical/Security Officer?" he asked.
"Yes, sir. Acting Ensign Ron Jackson, reporting for duty," he replied.
"Good. We're currently needed so I'll make this quick. As you know, this ship is currently divided into its three modules. We are currently facing a somehow-cloaked Cardassian warship that is attempting to destroy us, and one of the other modules needs our help."
He then turned to Vasati. "Any trail from the Ghemore we can follow?"
"Yes," he said, looking at his readings. "It seems that they're venting plasma. Currently at bearing 170 Mark 015. Distance: 20,000 kilometers."
"Helm, bring us about," Nephi ordered McCoulley. "Set us on an intercept course with the Ghemore." He then turned to Jackson. "I want you to target the Ghemore," he said, then returned to his chair. "You may fire when ready."
Fox turned to Nephi. "It would be wise to keep save distance from the vented plasma." After he pressed some buttons on his console some information appeared next to the view of where the Ghemore would be.
"As we all know.." he continued "plasma is highly flamable. They might be luring us into a trap, hoping we'd overlook that and ignite it when we're too close." Nephi nodded.
"You're right Fox." Nephi turned to McCoulley again. "keep safe distance from the plasma."
"Aye, Sir." McCoulley replied.
In the mean time McCoulley had brought Discordia about and engaged the engines. While Discordia went after the Ghemore, slowly gaining on them, Fox studied the information Sonak had retreived and Jared had given him earlier.
Some of it seemed familiar as if he had seen it before, some was certainly new to him. He put the pad aside again. "It will have to wait for now." he thought "Catching up with the Ghemore is more important and getting some of those cardassians to interrogate would give us some answers. I hope." he added in thoughts.
Caldwell sighed with annoyance as Commander Kanz was beamed in. "As if I don't have my hands full already," he scowled, picking up a medical tricorder. With quick strides he walked up to the biobed and activated the medical semi-circle over Kanz's body.
"Right," he muttered, as he glanced at the diagnostic board. "Bruised, concussion, unconscious. Nothing serious." He pressed a hypospray with a stimulant againt her throat, injecting the content into her bloodstream. "Wake up sunshine, time to leave the wonderful world of unconsciousness."
<Kanz>
"Take it easy commander. You've been knocked over the head by something." He held up three fingers. "How many fingers?"
<Kanz>
"Good girl. Now take it easy and I'll let you get back to whatever you were doing before you decide to take another nap on duty. Get back to the bridge, I have more things to do than tend to minor injuries."
“Sir we are still venting plasma and it is now beyond our control.”
Gul Ra sat in his chair thinking of a new plan of action. The cloak he had installed on the Ghemore was the best latinum could buy, it was Romulan. How did they see through this cloak, it is impossible, Gul Ra sat thinking to himself.
“Maybe we can use this to our advantage,” Gul Ra said, “Lock onto the lead ship and prepare to fire rear torpedoes.”
“Target locked sir.” The tactical officer said.
“Fire!”
Suddenly in the blink of an eye a single photon torpedo burst from the rear of the Cardassian ship at warp speed smashing directly into the shields of the Federation ship.
“Direct his sir. They are still following us.”
“Release the anti-matter mines we have.” Gul Ra ordered.
The tactical officer went over his station pressing and scrolling through menus until he was satisfied with the end results. It seemed due to the battle several of the mine launches had been heavily damaged.
“Sir, only one launcher is operations. We can only launch one mine at a time.”
“Then do it!” Gul Ra yelled turning to face the tactical officer, “All stop, bring us about.”
Silently a single mine slipped out of the rear of the Ghemore, the helm officer waited to stop the ship until it was a safe distance from the explosion of the anti-matter. Gul Ra watched as the main view screen swung and suddenly a Federation ship began to creep closer and closer to the little trap he had set.
“Ra, the other Federation ship is closing on our position fast.”
“We shall wait. Lock all weapons on that Federation ship,” Gul Ra said pointing to the view screen.
As the Ghemore sat waiting, venting plasma, the build up of plasma made it harder to pin point the exact location of the cloaked ship giving Gul Ra the advantage he was looking for.
“I have them now.” Gul Ra said out loud.
She couldn't help herself, it was the first thing that came into her mind.
"Well that's the first time I've been compared to good weather. It used to be thunderstorms..."
Caldwell gave her a slightly odd look, "At least you're awake I suppose. It's not good to have too many senior officers down here."
"You say that like it's my fault."
"Take it easy commander. You've been knocked over the head by something." He held up three fingers. "How many fingers?"
She pretended to study them for a moment, "22?" she asked.
He replied just as sarcastically, "Good girl. Now take it easy and I'll let you get back to whatever you were doing before you decide to take another nap on duty. Get back to the bridge, I have more things to do than tend to minor injuries."
With a mock salute L'Ola left the room and headed back to the Bridge, not exactly as fast as she should have done.
Jared seemed to have the situation under control, but appeared to be surprised to see the First Officer back so soon.
"Yeah, so I got let out early. Oh you do know that being knocked out tends to make me ditsy for a while?"
"I'll keep that in mind."
L'Ola smiled, "So, what's happening?"
