Jared sat in the XO seat as Sonak had beckoned him to do. It was an odd sensation, the chair was both comfortable and strange at the same time. In front of it was a small console which could give readouts on the myriad ship systems at the press of a button, although control over them would be minimal.
'What do you think Mr Jared?' Sonak asked 'The logs of the Treewoods don't cover their military capabilities since they were compiled by a single team several years ago and it's entirely possible a lot was hidden from them. However, what there is and what we have picked up on scanners suggest more than just the logs. Their space ships are weak compared to ours with little in the way of phaser technology or heavy shielding. However, they rely on missiles for attack and these would pose a problem. The Singing Soil, which is not their largest ship, carries 10 large missiles which I'm sure are faster than we are and carry enough explosive to put a nasty hole in us. Also, not mentioned in the report but according to our scanners, they have many larger missiles planetside as well as what appear to be anti-starship heavy pulse cannons. I could be wrong, but if these are correct then they would pose a serious threat to us should we end up in a fight. This close to that much firepower, our best bet would probably be to run.'
Jared finished; he knew that he had gone on for a while, but this was important. He waited for Sonak's response, wondering if she was going to order them into higher orbit or just to hold steady and rely on diplomacy to avert any troubles. After all, Commander Kanz was competant and unlikely to end them up in a fight. As long as she didn't light any fires then the Treewoods should be placid enough.

"Keep an eye on on those weapons platforms Mr Jared," Sonak replied, while watching the planet rotate on the main viewscreen. She envied the landing party, as she had really wanted to go down herself.
"As the Treewood illness is not likely to pose a threat to our crew, I am thinking of organizing a little dinner get together. That way they will see our means of transportation, and those who have no chance of beaming down would have a chance of meeting a new culture."
Sonak tapped her combadge. "Sonak to Away team. Commander Kanz, please extend an invitation for dinner to Director Paranak and his attendees. If they would be so kind to forward us their food preferences, it could save us an embarassment of serving the wrong foods."
"Acknowledged commodore," Kanz replied from the planet's surface.
~~ surface ~~
Kanz turned toward Paranak and Shork. "Commodore Sonak wishes to extend an invitation to dinner. She wishes to know if there is any specific type of food that you require or which you may not wish to consume due to religious grounds or other."

OOC: posting as Shork here.
'Commodore Sonak wishes to extend an invitation to dinner. She wishes to know if there is any specific type of food that you require or which you may not wish to consume due to religious grounds or other.'
'I'm afraid I must leave this to Sub-Director Shork since I am required to see to matters regarding our current situation. I'm sure he's more than capable to see to you' Paranak explained and walked off.
'Well, Sub-Director?' Kanz asked
'We can eat all food, we have no religion which prohibits consumption of any food. However, we much prefer vegetable matter over animal products because we find them so much easier to digest. If I may bring a group of diplomats with us, we shall also bring the ingredients for our lifewaters. I'm sure your data logs can tell you what those are faster than I can.' Shork said smiling at them.
After a little while, Shork returned accompanied by two other Treewoods, but Paranak was still not amongst them. 'Kanz to Vesuvius, away team to beam up plus three Treewoods' Kanz instructed.
The transporter beamed them straight to the mess hall where the makings of a mostly vegetarian feast were already on the table. In the middle of the long table was a large centrepiece made out of leaves with tomatoes one side and almonds on the other. Shork and his group sat at the tomato facing end to await the arrival of the rest of the dinner party.

Sonak tugged at the collar of her dress uniform, frowning at her reflection in the mirror. Beside her, Jatan was expriencing the same problem but eventually got his right. "Here, let me help you with that, honey," he said, reaching over to adjust hers, "there, that better?"
Stiffling a nervous smile, she nodded. "Yes thank you, much better." She looked back into the adjacent bedrooms. "Are the children settled?"
"I've taken them to Mary Hobson, she'll look after them. Mrs Hobson said she wasn't able to attend the party because one of her children is a little sick. Poor thing's got the flu."
"Well with de daycare centre closed, and our own nanny being on leave, that is the best possible solution." She gave a final tug at her tunic and turned to her bondmate. "Shall we?"
Jatan held out his arm to her, and together the couple walked down to the mess hall. They stopped in the doorway, surveying the scene before them. There was a long table set up, displaying a variety of vegetables and fruits. The three Treewoods were seated at one end of the table, and she spotted her senior staff on the other end. There were still two seats available next to the Treewoods.
"Please excuse our lateness," Sonak apollogized, "dress uniforms are not pleasant to put on, but formal matters demand the following of protocol." She bowed ever so slightly towards the three guests. "I am Commodore Sonak Reckus, and I welcome you aboard the USS Vesuvius-A. You have met most of my senior staff, thus I will waver formal introductions on their part. I trust everything is to your satisfaction gentlemen?"

OOC: sorry about monologues, but Treewoods do like to talk for a long time.
'So far you have been most magnificent hosts. The food is exquisite, the people are lively and interesting and distrubing though it is to be in space, your windows offer a majestic view of our beloved planet. I must say that this spinach plant is by far the greatest dish on the table' Shork began
'If I may interrupt' spoke up another Treewood, although to human ears it hardly sounded like an interruption at all 'In my opinion, these sprouts are most marvelous vegetables. I would be most honoured if you would trade us some seeds of this plant, as I'm sure Sub-Director Shork would most welcome the seeds of the spinach plant too. Alas my old friend Sark has lately forgone his taste for the traditional foods and has moved on to less native cuisine'
When his rather booming voice and the untranslatable sur-noise had faded away, the third Treewood spoke up. 'I'm afraid that I do enjoy this human food' he said, faster than usual for a Treewood, 'it is called a 'beeeeff saandwidge''.
'Forgive Sub-Director Shork for forgetting to introduce us' the loudly voiced one stood up and boomed 'but although he is a most able politician, he is less of an ambassador. I am Grove Speaker, Ambassador Enk and this is my old friend, Culturist Sark. Culturist Sark has studied humans since we first made contact. I fear that if we were to become full Federation citizens then he would be a Starfleet officer before the rest of the forest waves. As for your protocols, we are most grateful for your hospitality and have likewise attempted to copy them as best we could.' He indicated Shork's attempt at a Vulcan robe and his own flowing ermine robe. 'However, I fear we have not quite made a perfect copy yet.' The whole speech had been a hilly ride of ups and downs as Enk emphasised some words for added meaning and held on to words to make them fit some sort of tempo in his own head. The voice, although loud, was somehow comforting and could easily lull a tired person to sleep.
'Commodore Reckus, we're most grateful for your help.' Sark interjected, leaning towards Sonak and speaking not so loudly that everyone could hear. 'You see, we're smart, but we are simply not fast enough to combat this virus. It seems to be some sort of fungus that thrives in the humid conditions we prefer. I apologise if this puts you off your dinner, but when someone is infected, their leaves turn yellow and thier bark darkens. Yet I doubt that even Paranak for his quickness of thought can stop it. You see, we're just not fast enough as a group; you can see that for yourself from the discussion of favourite foods. Please, we urgently need what help you can give as soon as all are fed, rested and ready.' Sark's speech was here even faster than usual. His voice lacked the sur-noise as he spoke to Sonak; he was trying to communicate as he had seen humans do in order to speed up the monologue.

After having been beamed back up to the Vesuvius, Nika was relieved that there had been no need for security while they were on the surface. There was nothing but a job in such a field to make you want to feel invisible, and unneeded. Unfortunately, Nika had a feeling that it wasn’t going to last for long. Maybe it was just her being rude, but she didn’t like the Treewoods much. The main reason was probably that they talked so much, and many of them very loudly.
Still, even though most of the other people on this ship didn’t seem to have a problem with the Treewoods, Nika’s job was to be suspicious, and prepared for trouble. And, honestly, she thought that a diplomatic dinner wasn’t likely to go too well.
Resolved to not fail at this social gathering completely, Nika glanced at the dress uniform she had changed into. At least she was dressed correctly for the occasion. But as for talking with the Treewoods, well, it appeared that all she really needed to do was listen, and nod occasionally. And the listening actually seemed to be fairly optional, half the time Nika didn’t even think that they were listening their other. Of course, it seemed to be the same for most other species. That was one of the problems with people talking to much, they stopped valuing what another person had to say. And what they had to say, they talked just to talk.
Even though listening seemed to be optional, Nika tried to follow the Treewoods words, figuring that she might learn something, and if not, at least she was being polite. Although just trying to listen was difficult, with all the sur-noise and other people’s conversation, she wasn’t sure what the person in front of her was saying, though she was able to follow the outline of his…monologue.

Cultirist Sark turned to Cir'Kem, intentionally targetting her as the youngest looking and therefore probably the most energetic member of the officers present. 'You were the fighting officer if I remember correctly. 'Sehcyoriteey', I think they called it,' he began, attempting to pronoucne the fast spoken word of the foreigners. 'I am fascinated by the faster living creatures we've met since attaining warp drive. Your ships and your people are marvelous and I want to catalogue all there is to know about them. Please, tell me what you can.'
Cir'Kem eyed him suspiciously, but not enough to alert him to any inner feeling of doubt. 'I wouldn't know what to say' she said
'Say whatever you want to, that's the tradition of the Treewoods. I have more than enough time to listen. Maybe tell me about your people or your ship. Anything new is worth learning' he encouraged her.

Nika certainly agreed with Cultirist Sark’s last statement, but she didn’t see how continual babbling helped him to learn anything new. If she was human she would probably have repeated ‘my people?’ and ‘my ship?’ back at him in a questioning tone, but she didn’t think that would help her, or Cultirist Sark to understand.
Instead, she decided to get by with saying little, and maybe discouraging Sark from continuing to press her for an answer. "My people don’t like to talk much, they believe that a lot can be communicated without the need for wasting breath." And we don’t see why everyone else insists on talking far more than was necessary, and on talking so loudly, Nika silently added. It’s enough to make me deaf, or, at the least, wish that I was.

Nephi turned his head, noticing Ensign Cir'Kem's conversation with Cultirist Sark. Hoping he wasn't interrupting.
"Well Cultirist, if it's our ships you're interested in, I can probably tell you just about anything you want to know about them."
Sark smiled, or what was a smile as far as Nephi could tell. "Please do," he said warmly. "Expound to me the many powers and virtues of such powerful and wonderful ships, which sail so gracefully through the vast firmaments of the stars, that......oh, forgive me. It will take me some time to get used to your more abbreviated mode of speech."
Nephi shook his head. "Don't worry about it, Cultirist. Cultural exchanges of information are one of the tenants of Starfleet, but anway, about our starships. The Vesuvius here is one of more powerful and advanced ships in the Fleet. For example, it has the ability to divide laterally into three seperate sections, each of them with, for the most part, all of the facilities of the larger combined starship. It gives us distinct advantage in tactical situations, allowing us to engage an enemy ship from three vectors."
Sark's face showed what Nephi interpreted to be wonder. "Extraordinary. Do all of your ships have this marvelous ability?"
"They do not. It is reserved for larger tactical ships, as such ships require more resources in both building and operation, for we reserve such features for a select few ships. Now, what about your ships? I know you're probably not a technology expert, but is there someone among you here that is?" he asked, indicating the other Treewoods.

Nika was grateful that Lieutenant Jacobson joined the conversation, since it stopped her from having to say much more. Instead she could focus all of her attention on listening, since she wasn’t too likely to offend others if she stayed silent, as long as she wasn’t directly asked a question.
Also, she was able to learn quite a lot about the ship, a lot that she hadn’t had a chance to look up yet, or, upon looking up, hadn’t been able to comprehend it yet, and had not yet had a chance to go back and investigate further. Perhaps there the talking was not completely unnecessary. Of course, an abbreviated explanation wouldn’t have been required if the explanation was clearer to begin with. Nika couldn’t understand that many humanoids seemed to feel that they could get their point across better if they spoke it, when it was far easier to comprehend written words, since then the reader could look back over sections that they didn’t understand, rather than asking another person to repeat what they had said.
Nika found it rather difficult to follow the conversation between Sark and Lieutenant Jacobson, since they only seemed to pause to let each other say something, not to merely enjoy the silence. Not that there was any silence, with everyone else talking at once! Nika tried to imagine how her older sister, Mirah, would react to this room. Probably think something about overruling centuries of important historical precedent, or something similarly so historical and irrelevant that Nika would find it incomprehensible. And then Mirah would probably leave the room, quietly enough that no one would even realize she had ever been here.
Nika smiled at thinking of what her sister would do. Of course Sophie, her younger sister, would probably do much as the same thing that Mirah would. Nika’s smile faded a little as she realized that she hadn’t been following the conversation much, and Lieutenant Jacobson was asking a question. Fortunately it didn’t seem to be directed at her.

Fox sat at the helm console staring at the main screen, which showed the Treewoods planet. He had never seen a Treewood for real, apart from on the viewing screen. Fox thought it was a great idea of Sonak to invite the Treewood onboard for dinner and was eager to attend it. The dinner would be right after the end of his duty shift.
He sat there at the console, waiting for his shift to end. Having not much to do, apart from monitoring the navigational readings, now they were in orbit. Finally his shift ended as another navigation officer walked to him. "Its all yours, lieutenant." he said and let the officer take his place behind the helm console, leaving the bridge himself.
Quickly walked to his quarters, not wanting to be late for the meeting with the treewoods. There he put his dress uniform on, after which he hurried to the mess hall. When he got there some of the senior staff had already arrived. He sat down on a chair at the table.
Not much later the welcoming group joined with the treewood, they also took place at the table. Everyone who didn't meet the treewood yet introduced themselfs to them. When they all were done, dinner was put on the table. While enjoying the dinner some questions were asked the treewoods. Giving a 'long' answer, which was more like a story, Fox listened carefully wanting catch as much as he could through the noise of everyone else speaking.

'I dare say Grove Speaker, Ambassador Enk knows far more about the ships than I do, but if you want to know before the last course then maybe I should tell you. He does tend to be long winded, even for a Treewood. Our ships are not warp capable like yours and very small in comparison. The Singing Soil lacks phaser technology, but we don't need warships. The Sunbeam has some rather nifty phasers, but yours are probably better. However, our planet and ships are far from defenceless since we have our own means of weapons.' Culturist Sark was proud of that statement, he had managed to say a lot less than other Treewoods would have. 'Is there anything specific you would like to know, Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson, Chief Engineer?' he inquired

'Is there anything specific you would like to know, Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson, Chief Engineer?' Cultirist Sark asked.
"Yes, but please, just call me Nephi. I much prefer being refered to by my first name rather than my rank or position. But anyway. As your vessels are not warp-capable, what means of propulsion do they use? We have impulse engines for sub-light speed, when we are travelling short distances or through a place where warp isnt possible, or when it's dangerous, like a solar system. What propulsion system drives them?"
<Sark>
"Also, you mentioned that your ships are much smaller than ours. How large of a crew would such a vessel have? And how well-staffed is it comparatively?" he asked, then sat back to listen.

'Is it usual for you to shorten your name and use only a single part of it? I have noticed that different humans seem to prefer different parts of their name. Is it cultural or personal preference?'
'It can be both. I simply prefer Nephi, but other people have other preferences. Sometimes it's rude to call someone by their last name. You just have to pay attention' Jacobson replied
'Oh dear, I suppose I should pay more attention to that then Lieu-er... Nephi. Our ships use ion engines, although I don't really know how that works. It's not terribly fast but I'm sure we could match speed with some human vessels. Our ships are well made and always fully crewed. You see, we don't build them before we have the crew ready since as a group we don't mind waiting. Most Treewoods can't see the attraction of being in space so far from home, but still there are many younger ones happy to do it. I suppose you have no trouble finding volunteers to fill your ships?'

"Indeed not, we have no trouble finding people to staff our ships. As for the Officers, it is quite difficult to get into Starfleet Academy. I've heard that for every person accepted, 3 others are rejected. And then only about half of those make it through. So there's no trouble finding people interested in being Officers. As for the enlisted personnel, they are to be found in abundance. It is one of the best ways to become in Engineering, for example."
Just then, the Chef came over carrying a bowl, and place it in front of Nephi. "I remembered that you had been asking about these, and managed to find some," he said. It contained walnuts, and a metal nutcracker was on top of the pile.
"Ah! Thank you," he said, and picked up the nutcracker. Placing a walnut in it, he cracked it open, and popped the softer inner-nut into his mouth.
"Excuse me, Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson, Chief Engineer," Ambassador Enk said to him, noticing it. "May I ask what that is you're eating?"
Nephi explaining as he cracked another one. "It's a walnut. It's the fruit of certain species of..." He realized his cultural mistake. "...of trees," he said in horror, and the cracked nut slipped from his grasp as he stared at the bowl. What would they think?

Paranak had caught the conversation between the human engineer, and one of his own people. When he saw the human consume the nuts he froze, and watched silently. Then he made a whistling sound, and Treewood guards barged into the room, fully armed.
The guards stopped at Nephi's chair and hoisted him up by his arms, dragging him away under his loud protest. Paranak nodded towards the guards to proceed, then turned to their hosts to see their reaction.
On his right, Sonak watched the scene unfold, wondering what was going on. She hadn't seen Nephi do anything wrong, though she had seen him pale visibly at some point. She had sensed fear from him, but could not tell why.
"Director, what is going on?" she enquired, "where have you taken my chief engineer?"
"Your chief engineer will be charged with murder," Paranak said, then as gracefully as an individual of his kind could manage, stalked from the room.
Sonak beckoned Cir'Kem. "Ensign, I want you to go with them, question the Treewoods and Lieutenant Jacobson. I want to know exactly what happened that seems to have offended them."
She turned to Shork, who had remaind behind. "What happened?" she enquired, "why is he charged with murder?"

Nika was content to silently watch the conversation, but everyone involved seemed rather enthusiastic, and too noisy, so she withdrew a little, still listening, but at least this way she was no longer intruding. She did overhear Lieutenant Jacobson ask the Treewood to call him Nephi, which made a lot of sense to her, especially when compared to the long formula the Treewoods kept using. Nika understood the want not to waste breath, especially when he could understand and respond to Nephi as his name just as well as he could respond to Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson, Chief Engineer.
Nika’s thoughts were drifting, so unfortunately she did not entirely catch what happened next, except that a chef came up with something for Lieutenant Jacobson, and soon afterwards the Treewoods seized him.
"Ensign, I want you to go with them, question the Treewoods and Lieutenant Jacobson. I want to know exactly what happened that seems to have offended them." Commander Sonak instructed Nika.
"Yes sir," Nika replied, hurrying to comply. "Who did he murder?" she asked while hurrying after Director Paranak, but didn’t receive an answer. That would have been one situation in which the amount they talk might have been useful, Nika thought, still silently demanding an answer.

When Jacobson had unwittingly commited nucticide, the Treewoods were silent for the first time since they had come on board. It started with Enk, who said nothing but unconsciously made a distress sur-noise, which was picked up by Sark, despite his ability to usually remove it. Paranak and Shork both looked towards the source of the noise and saw the other two staring at Jacobson who had turned pale and frozen with the tool still in his hand. After momentary still life, Paranak summoned the guards and all hell broke loose in the mess hall. Four large Treewoods stormed into the hall RPG launchers; two took up position inside the doors and the other two grabbed Jacobson and dragged him out. Paranak swiftly followed as the other three Treewoods quickly stood to follow him. Paranak spoke quietly to Shork for a moment and then left to follow the first two guards to the transporter room. Sark and Enk followed and the other two guards brought up the rear. Shork remained.
'What happened?' Sonak enquired, 'why is he charged with murder?' 'I'm very sorry, Commodore Sonak Reckus, but his crime is unspeakable. He commited infanticide at the dinner table. You must understand, to see something like that is unstomachable for any Treewood. Also, Director Paranak believes that offworlders brought the virus that has afflicted us since it only occurred once we encountered humans. After seeing the diversity in your crew and the fact that your features and hair do not all match, he believes many of you carry the virus. As of this moment, USS Vesuvius is under quarantine and any attempt to move out of it will be taken as an act of war. I must follow him now, Commodore Sonak Reckus.'
As Sub-Director Shork left, Jared messaged the Commodore from the bridge. 'Sir, three Treewood vessels have moved into position around us and I am picking up targetting signals from the surface. I believe they have enough firepower to down us in one go.'

Nika tried to follow the Treewoods, but when she reached the doors she found herself quickly left behind and ignored, but the guards in the rear seemed to be making some kind of threatening sur-noise. Since Nika was sure that she wasn’t learning anything this way, she started to fall behind, and was passed by Sub-Director Shork. When she tried to ask him the question he replied that they were under quarantine, and as Nika could tell that the Treewoods’ destination was the transporter room, and that she couldn’t really stop them from getting there, she turned around and returned to the mess hall, not sure how the captain would respond when she said that they had gotten away, but knowing that she had had no way to stop them, or even keep up with them.
Nika arrived in the mess hall just in time to hear Jared’s message to the Commodore; "Sir, three Treewood vessels have moved into position around us and I am picking up targetting signals from the surface. I believe they have enough firepower to down us in one go." If Nika had been a particularly vocal person she might have swore at that point, but as it was all she wished was that she had tackled the Treewoods, or something, to stop them from returning to their ship. Then again, if they hadn’t returned to their ship the other Treewoods might have decided to fire immediately. As the situation was, Nika decided to go to the bridge, since she could best do whatever she needed to do from her station there.

Sonak stood stunned, gazing after the departing Treewoods. Her mission had just taken a bad turn for the worse. Instead of quarantining the Treewood colony, they had ended up being quarantined themselves, and apparently based on the diversity of species among her crew.
On top of that, her chief engineer had just gotten arrested and charged with murder. She shook her head, hoping that she would wake up and that it would all just be a dream. Looking around, she realized it most certainly was not a dream. She was completely shaken out of her reviree by the report by her new chief of operations, who coincidently seemed to be the most knowledgeable about this colony.
"Acknowledged," she replied, realizing something else; she had completely forgotten to promote the lieutenant to lieutenant commander. "Ah lieutenant, meet me in my readyroom as soon as I get to the bridge," she replied, " have tactical keep our shields and weapons down. The last we need is to appear aggressive towards the Treewoods."
She left Kanz to oversee the rest of the dinner with whatever crew wished to complete the occasion and headed for the bridge.
"Commander Fox, keep us on a low orbit around Treewood, and make sure we do not deviate from that orbit. If you do need to change course, inform the Treewoods first. They have heavy weapons aimed at us, and I have no doubt that they will fire upon us if we do not as we were told."
She turned to find Nika standing at the tactical console. "Ensign, contact the Treewoods, and have them report to you on Lieutenant Jacobson's status. Tell them that we wish him to be extradited to us and that he shall be kept in the brig. If they believe we are the source of this virus, they will most likely happily turn him over to us. If we give them our assurance that he will be tried, they just might indulge us."
Sonak beckoned Jared to follow her into her readyroom, where she reached into the desk's drawer, revealing a small box. Opening the box, it contained a single black pip. "Not the best of circumstances for a promotion, but nonetheless deserved, lieutenant commander Jared." She offered him a small smile, only just barely detectable. "Congratulations."

“Hail all three Treewood ships,” Nika commanded, since she didn’t really care which Treewood answered her, as long as she could convince the Treewood to let Lieutenant Jacobson go. “Am I talking to someone of authority?” Nika asked when a Treewood she didn’t recognize answered the hail.
“Yes, you are,” the Treewood replied, ominously only saying those three words.
“We need to know the status of Lieutenant Jacobson,” Nika said.
“Why?” demanded the Treewood. Although Nika subconsciously appreciated that the few words that the Treewood said were short and to the point, she wondered why the Treewood was talking so little in contrast to all other Treewoods she had talked to before. Her mind suggested the fact briefly that they might think that further interaction, even if it was only talking to her, might contaminate them with the virus, but she dismissed it as ridiculous. When she thought about it a little more, it made just as much sense as thinking that just because people were different then they were diseased.
“We need to know that he is okay, and to know what measures you are taking to keep him quarantined. I would like to suggest the best possible way for dealing with him is that you have him extradited to us. We would keep him in the brig, and would try him on that charge. And we certainly would not attempt to move from our current position, because of your weapons that are being held on us.” Nika sighed, looking at the Treewood, aware that she had talked almost as much as a…normal…Treewood would. But this one had only said four words, making Nika wonder briefly if something was wrong with him.
She waited in silence for him to answer, then realized that he wasn’t going to answer without prodding. “What is your answer?” she asked him.
“I will have to consult with the other Treewoods,” he responded, his sur-noise faster than what Nika had thought normal. She realized that it had been faster, more of a monotone than the others, throughout their entire conversation. It almost sounded worried to Nika, but he hadn’t said anything long enough for her to notice earlier in the conversation. Nika wondered if the humans recognized it, but they had to, although she did know that since her species didn't use as many words as others they had learned to communicate more throught their tone of voice. Nika was broken out of her thoughts when the comm channel was closed.
What did he think I meant when I asked to speak to someone with authority? Nika wondered. Well, maybe he has the authority to send a message to someone who can actually make a decision, or something like that. Either way, I hope we get a response soon, I don’t like the idea of Lieutenant Jacobson being on one of their ships any longer than is necessary.

Fox saw the Treewoods leave the mess hall in a hurry, with Jacobson as their prisoner. Not much later Jareds call to Sonak came in. "Sir, three Treewood vessels have moved into position around us and I am picking up targetting signals from the surface. I believe they have enough firepower to down us in one go."
Sonak left the mess hall , hurrying to the bridge. Although Fox' shift hadn't started yet he did the same and he took replaced the navigation officer there again.
While he kept facing the help console, Fox responded "Aye, Ma'am". Keeping the Vesuvius in the same orbit as they were, monitoring the position of the three treewood vessels that were 'floating' around the Vesuvius.

Nephi struggled against the surprisingly strong Treewoods holding him. He tried to hinder them from taken by not walking, but they just dragged him along.
"I didn't think about what I was doing!" He protested. "Those walnuts wouldn't grow up into Treewoods like you anyway."
"Nonsense. All nuts grow into Treewoods. And you also need to be quarantined. Your hair is different from anyone at that table, which means you are most affected by the virus of any of them," Director Paranak said, follow behind him.
"But my hair is supposed to be this color. I was born this way," he said, looking back at Paranak.
"Further evidence of your people's infection. You must be quarantined to keep it from spreading further," Paranak said, once again dismissing Nephi's claim.
"This is ridiculous," Nephi said, and lifted himself onto his feet. Using the guards' grips to support himself, he lifted himself off the ground, and kicked one of the guards holding him into the side. The Treewood winced in pain, releasing him. Nephi then started on the other guard.
But while he was pounding on the guard's arm, he felt something press against his neck and heard a hissing noise. By the time he registered what had happened, he was already losing consciousness. The other guards continued dragging his limp body towards the transporter room.
When they entered, the crewmember present looked up in surprise. The Treewoods all stepped onto the transporter pad, and Paranak said "Beam us back to the surface, now." Two of the Treewoods lifted the RPG launchers, aiming them at the person behind the console.
Fortunately for Nephi, the person behind the console was Chief Raul, the Transporter Chief, whom Nephi had personally promoted to that position. "I'm sorry, sir," he said to Paranak, noticing Nephi's limp body, "but I cannot allow you to kidnap our Chief Engineer."

Sonak beckoned Jared to follow her into her readyroom, where she reached into the desk's drawer, revealing a small box. Opening the box, it contained a single black pip. 'Not the best of circumstances for a promotion, but nonetheless deserved, lieutenant commander Jared.' She offered him a small smile, only just barely detectable. 'Congratulations.' Jared appreciated the unfortunate circumstances that had arisen. Really he should have warned everyone but it was impossible to predict that the CEO would be at the dinner and they he would fail to notice the Treewood physiology. Jared wouldn't have minded in the circumstances if the Commodore had forgotten entirely, but she had remembered, which was nice of her. 'Thank you, Commodore' he said, returning the brief smile. 'If I may, I would like to scan the logs of the previous encounter with the Treewoods by the Federation to see if anything presents itself to help us.' 'Of course. Carry on, commander' Sonak replied
Jared returned to his post which he had left a moment ago a rank lower and accessed the diplomatic files on the Treewoods. The encounter had been about 10 years ago when a Starfleet vessel had become lost and been contacted by the Treewoods whose sub-light spaceships had detected it. Apparently their scanners were better than their engines. So Jared began scanning the logs and noticed that Sark had been the Communications Officer of that ship. Maybe there was hope here then...
Meanwhile in the transporter room. When they entered, the crewmember present looked up in surprise. The Treewoods all stepped onto the transporter pad, and Paranak said 'Beam us back to the surface, now.' Two of the Treewoods lifted the RPG launchers, aiming them at the person behind the console.
Fortunately for Nephi, the person behind the console was Chief Raul, the Transporter Chief, whom Nephi had personally promoted to that position. 'I'm sorry, sir,' he said to Paranak, noticing Nephi's limp body, 'but I cannot allow you to kidnap our Chief Engineer.'
Paranak nodded and the RPG launchers made the ominous clicking noise that suggests a weapon is ready to make a point that could be understood in any language. 'This isn't a kidnapping, this is an arrest and any person who stands in the way is declaring themselves a criminal or an enemy of the Treewoods. Now beam us to the surface' Paranak roared 'I'm sorry sir, but for a ship to surface transport I need the captain's permission' he lied =/\=Commodore, the Treewoods wish to beam down to the surface with Lieutenant Jacobson. Maybe you should come and see to it personally=/\= The various Treewoods were becoming more and more agitated. Shork, Sark and Enk were looking more and more worried and backing away to the rear of the transporter, whereas Paranak and the guards were becoming more angry and more twitchy. At that moment, a security detail who had heard the shouting entered and saw the Treewoods with their guns aimed at CPO Raul. They aimed phasers at the guards, recognising the threat to the ship of such large guns. 'Put down your weapons!' the head of the group ordered The other two Treewood guards dropped Jacobson on the floor and pointed their guns at the security detail. The whole thing had taken less than a few seconds to reach this point, and now all froze waiting for any sign that the others were about to fire. All apart from CPO Raul. =/\=Commodore, this is an emergency, you had better come down here right now=/\= he said, as calmly as he could with two 40mm RPG gun barrels pointed at him.

Sonak sighed and put down the PADD she was trying to read a little harder than she had intended. "Chief, you will let the Treewoods beam down instantly," she announced, "and unless you wish to be floating around in space as atoms for the next million years you obey my orders. We are already working on a proposal to retain Mr Jacobson in our own brig, but for now you will let them beam down."
She paused, exchanging a worried look with Reman and Nikaila. "How is that proposal coming along?" she enquired, then turned her attention back to the open comm link. "However, I will wish the assurance that no harm will come to my chief engineer. If he is harmed in any way, we will see to it that armed forces will be sent in our way, as then it will be treated as a hostile act."
