OOC: this is a joint post with Sonak.
'I do not like your threats, Commodore Sonak Reckus' Paranak stated 'and I do not like your soldiers' guns. Order them to put them down before we are transported to avoid any unfortunate actions. And you,' he said, pointing at CPO Raul 'if you even look like you're going to touch that console you will regret it'
'You may not like them director but they are a necessary evil,' Sonak replied, putting down her PADD a second time, 'you see, you are accusing one of my men of murder, where really he only made an innocent error which he realised too late. I am fairly sure that had he been aware beforehand, he would not have made the error. I have ordered Mr Raul to allow you to beam down, and it will be done. Harm any of my crew, and it will be seen as a hostile act. Remember that you are guests aboard my ship.'
'Understand my position, Commodore Sonak Reckus. I have no guarantee of the safety of my men on this ship once we are being transported. For all I know, you will simply take the prisoner back once we are in transit and declare war; I cannot allow that as the primary law enforcer of my people. He is a criminal under the laws of the land and the laws of the land cannot be refuted. We are not Federation members so we cannot be sure he will be given a fair hearing as we would see it. Remove your soliders and give us a physical means of transport instead and I will allow you to send a legal aide with the prisoner if you do not believe any of our officals are capable. That is my final offer'
'I cannot do that,' Sonak replied, 'Starfleet does not kill without reason, and you have my word that your people will not be harmed if they remain behind. You may beam down in separate parties if you wish, to ensure that your partner are arriving. Besides, what ensurances do we have that you will not fire your weapons upon us, after you have taken my officer down?'
'You are not yet a criminal and neither are the members of your crew. It would be immoral to kill them all for the sins of one man. We are an ethical people and so as long as you remain innocent it is against our conscience to harm you. I shall beam down with Grove Speaker, Ambassador Enk, Culturist Sark and the prisoner. Sub-Director Shork will remain behind to make sure nothing untoward happens.' Paranak motioned three of the guards and Sub-Director Shork to stand off the transporter pad. One of the guards went to stand behind CPO Raul.
'He will not be harmed,' Sonak assured him, 'but I will have your assurance that my chief engineer will not be harmed.'
'He shall not be harmed as long as he does not try to escape like he did before. We used non-violent methods then but if he should prove to be a problem then that is his own choice. He will be made aware of his situation when he wakes up. I cannot vouch for his good sense, but I can vouch for the ethical nature of my people and our laws' Paranak replied
'Mr Raul, you will beam the Treewoods down without further argument.' Sonak added, after a short pause
Unfortunately, by this point in the ordeal CPO Raul's hands began to shake. He only noticed it as he attempted to beam down the 4 Treewoods and Jacobson, but too late. By sheer ill luck he had not managed to set Jacobson's pad to energise. Sub-Director Shork recognised the mistake for what it was, simple fear, but the guards were less vigilant.
Shork jumped forward, his arms spread as if to hold the two sides apart and shouting 'No, stop!' It had been the fasted he had moved in his life, but it was too late.
One of the guards struck Raul from behind with the butt of his gun, one fired a stun grenade into the group of security guards who fired back and the third was shot down by two Starfleet phasers. The one who had struck Raul set the transporter to delayed time surface transport, fired another stun grenade at the group and moved onto the transporter with the second guard and Jacobson. They beamed down, leaving the five Starfleet crew unconscious, their fallen comrade on the other side of the room from the door and in the middle was the inert form of Sub-Director Shork.

L'Ola started pacing up and down the Bridge. She couldn't handle this. Things had been going really well. She found herself wishing, not for the first time, that she was back down in the science labs gossipping with Kat and Jason.
*No, must focus* she said to herself. The problem was what to focus on. Trying to focus on the issue of staffing engineering without thinking about why rearrangement was necessary, she looked through the staff list.
"Why won't this work?" L'Ola suddenly realised she'd said it aloud when everyone turned to look at her. "Sorry, I don't suppose anyone here is a qualified engineer?"
A series of shaking head told her what she already knew, Sarah was just going to have to cope. "Kanz to Commander O'Malley."
=/\= O'Malley here, how can I help? =/\=
"Actually, the question is how can I help you? I have no idea what the position with Lieutenant Jacobson is, but I'm afraid you might have to survive without him for a while."
=/\= Yes, I guessed as much. We can manage down here for now, but can you keep us up-to-date down here? =/\=
"Of course, I'll talk to you later. Kanz out." With the end of the conversation, L'Ola got rid of the fixed smile on her face. She tried not to hold grudges, but sometimes it was difficult.
Unable to help in engineering, she turned her attention to other department reports. A genuine smile appeared on the stressed First Officer's face as she read Lieutenant Carter's review.
Deciding to take a look at what was going on for herself, she organised cover and headed down to visit her old department.
<OOC: Sorry that I haven't posted in ages and that this isn't anything special. Would someone be able to do me a favour and give me a summary because I got a little confused as to exactly what's happening? Thanks.>

“Not so well,” Nika replied when she had a chance. She heard the following comm conversation. “Should I send a team of security down?” she asked Commodore Reckus when the unmistakable sound of weapons fire was heard over the open comm channel, and her sensor readings registered the firing of various weapons, not all of them Federation phasers. But the phasers had been involved.
“Sending down security could inflate the situation,” Nika continued, “But only if anyone was still conscious. However it is quite possible that everyone is unconscious, in which case it would be better to deal with this situation while they remain that way. In addition, the transporter was activated after the firing had ended, meaning that any Treewoods still conscious may have beamed down. However I am still registering two Treewood life signs in the transporter bay, so they must have left their comrades behind. I advise sending down security.” Nika realized that although she had talked for a long time, which may seem to be unusual for her, she never thought that it would be better to give less information than she had, and in that particular situation, in order to advise the Commodore of the situation, it had been necessary to use many words.

Sonak stood frozen in the middle of the bridge as she heard the shots fall over the still open comm link. "Chief!" she called, "chief, is everything all right?"
An eery silence followed, and then only some moaning could be heard. Gazing around, she tapped Fox on his shoulder. "You have the bridge Mister Fox. Ms Cir'Kem, with me. Commander Jared, find Commander Kanz and go working on finding a way to prove that we are not virus infected. Also, prepare to activate our cloaking device. We do not wish for them to find us while we try to solve our own problems." She tapped her combadge. "Doctors Reckus and Caldwell, if you are off duty, report to sickbay at once! Medical emergency!"
After calling in the emergency, she raced down to the transporter room. She covered her mouth with her right hand as she froze in the doorway. There was one Treewood who was obviously beyond saving, but the chief and Shork were still alive. "Sickbay, two to transport directly to sickbay, they are badly injured."
She tapped her combadge again. "Commanders Kanz and Jared, have you found anything yet? I have another task for you. Subdirector Shork is severely injured, I had him beamed to sickbay. However, we know nothing of Treewood physiology, so there is a large chance we may lose him. I need you two to work on a way to save him, without contacting the Treewoods."
She paused. "Obviously they were in such a hurry that they could not care whether one of their own survived. We cannot afford his death, we are in severe danger already."

'Computer, where is Commander Kanz?' Jared asked of the machine 'Commander Kanz is in science laboratory one' it replied.
As he made his way down to the lab, Jared considered the possibilities, viewing the PADD he had with the Treewood data on it. Sark was most likely to want to help, although he probably held little actual authority. Shork and Enk were also possibilities, assuming that Paranak couldn't just overrule them entirely. If that were the case then it would make their job of proving themselves uninfected more political than scientific, which appeared the easier method since Paranak could simply accuse them of falsefying data or ignore them entirely. Just as he arrived in the lab, Sonak's second request came on the comm.
'Commanders Kanz and Jared, have you found anything yet? I have another task for you. Subdirector Shork is severely injured, I had him beamed to sickbay. However, we know nothing of Treewood physiology, so there is a large chance we may lose him. I need you two to work on a way to save him, without contacting the Treewoods.'
She paused. 'Obviously they were in such a hurry that they could not care whether one of their own survived. We cannot afford his death, we are in severe danger already.'
Commander Kanz looked puzzled since Jared hadn't had the chance to update her before Sonak contacted them.
'We may have a possibility if we make this more of a political than a scientific issue. It would help more since we have a more definite idea of their approach to politics. Also, I suggest we don't attempt to engage cloak since according to sensor data on their weapons and scanners, their missiles would probably reach us at about the point when our shields are down but the cloak is not up. We can't even be sure they won't be able to see us since their scanner technology appears to be quite remarkable.'
Kanz and Jared made their way to sickbay. 'Mr Jared, what was the commodore asking about back then?' she asked in the turbolift 'She wants us to find a way to prove we are not infected with the virus that the Treewoods are suffering from. Since we can't be sure that scientific data would even be accepted by them, I think our best chance is to try to enlist the help of the friendlier Treewoods if they are still friendly.' 'We should probably look for a scientific solution as well in case they won't listen or help' Kanz said 'I could try political whilst you find the scientific' Jared offered He handed her the Padd of Treewood data. 'That's about as much as the Federation knows about them' he said <tag Kanz>
Walking into sickbay, Jared saw Shork on the main biobed with all manner of scanners surrounding him. Clearly Dr Reckus was trying to monitor everything since he didn't know which specifics could be monitored. 'Dr Reckus I presume?' Jared said to the CMO 'Lieutenant Commander Reman Jared, COO' 'You're the one that the Commodore sent?' Reckus asked 'Yes, doctor' Jared replied 'I don't like the idea of telling you how to do your job, but needs must I suppose. I think the first thing that needs to be done is that Shork needs to be placed in a bath of his blend of lifewater. It should be on record now since he has been on board and eaten with us. Also, Treewood organs are not so specific as ours, so human medicine simply won't work' 'You can probably see I've already seen that problem' Reckus said 'I'm afraid from what I've seen, Treewoods have little idea of surgery. They don't seem to have much of a gap between healthy and dead. That's why the guards left him and the other Treewood behind; they didn't expect him to survive.' Reckus didn't look happy. There didn't appear to be much for a doctor to do. 'So is there anything I can do for him?' he asked 'Probably just keep monitoring him and attempt to restart any organ that shuts down. Maybe adding auxin in would help his tissues regrow and regenerate.' 'Auxin?' Reckus asked; it wasn't a commonly known surgical drug 'It's a plant growth hormone. I do a bit of horticulture in my quarters' Jared explained. 'Thank you, Mr Jared' Reckus said 'now I must proceed before we run out of any more time'
Jared returned to where Kanz was standing. 'I can't be sure that just that will help him, sir. Maybe you could find other drugs that might help him whilst you're in the science lab?' Jared suggested 'It might help to look up plant hormones'

Gazing around, she tapped Fox on his shoulder. Fox spun his chair around as Sonak tapped him on his shoulder. "You have the bridge Mister Fox. Ms Cir'Kem, with me. Commander Jared, find Commander Kanz and go working on finding a way to prove that we are not virus infected. Also, prepare to activate our cloaking device. We do not wish for them to find us while we try to solve our own problems." "Yes Ma'am." he repleid as he saw Cir'Kem, Jared and herself hurry off the bridge. He turned his chair again, staying behind the helm console. Keeping track of the surrounding vessels. He tapped a few buttons on his console, checking the status of their cloak, with it he also checked the MVAM initiation, making sure it was ready to use if they would need it. "Engineering did a great job after our last mission." he thought. "Everything seems to be in perfect working order." He reported the status of the systems to Sonak and sat a bit back in his chair.

~~~~~~Meanwhile on the bountiful planet of the Treewoods~~~~~~ The two guards had arrived at the reception point on the prison at Tresak Denaakii Vorifeldaan, capital city of the Treewoods. On sighting the prisoner, most of the Treewoods nearby moved away from him, hung between the two guards. Only the desk guard, his bark and leaves showing the beginning of infection, did not move. 'We need a solitary containment cell for this one and then decontamination for us two. Director Paranak, Grove Speaker, Ambassador Enk and Culturist Sark should have seen to theirs when they beamed down. Unfortunately, Sub-Director Shork and Guard of the Grove Erisank died in a firefight with some of the soldiers on the alien vessel.' The desk Guard looked gravely at the form of Nehpi Jacobson. 'Is he one of the soliders that killed Sub-Director Shork and Guard of the Grove Erisank?' 'No, this one is a murderer. He is an infanticide, and what is more, he performed the deed openly and in front of the entire diplomatic mission' The Guard looked shocked and appalled. Clearly humans were not to be trusted, or were they just incredibly stupid? 'Take him to cell 5, that one is able to be quarantined. Afterwards, if you walk to the back of the building we have a decontamination unit there' he said The two guards carried Jacobson down the hallway and to a cell. It was 12X12 feet, extremely well lit and airy. The door was heavy and of thick and strong glass, placed between metal bars set thinly enough that a Treewood hand would be too large to execute a good punch on a single payne. The high roof was covered half by a thick wire mesh and half by glass so that both rain and sun could easily penetrate. The floor was soil, but covered with a fine layer of soft moss, giving the effect of carpet, but there was no bed. These holding cells were after all designed humanely and comfortably since there was no guarantee the occupant was guilty. to a Treewood there would be nothing that could endanger the health. For a human, this probably wasn't going to be the most pleasant cell ever. After a few minutes, a Treewood on the roof covered the mesh with more glass to avoid unecessary contamination. Any rain requirements would be provided by internal sprinklers set to activate whenever it rained outside, generally very early in the morning. Paranak meanwhile had finished his decontamination and was in a quandry. To order his ships to fire would be to break moral and ethical boundaries innate to Treewoods. Even though soldiers had fired and one of the crew was clearly a criminal, there were far more innocents aboard, including some civilians. However, humans were wily and untrustworthy, despite what the foolish Culturist Sark had to say on the matter. The two guards who had brought the criminal planetside should be awarded for their bravery, but Sark was now under house arrest for a possible part in this, or at least failure to give vital information. Eventually he decided to make sure that blasted ship stayed where it was and didn't attempt any form of escape. ^|^Director Paranak to Singing Soil, I want the captain to tell the offworld vessel to remain where it is in orbit and not attempt any means of escape. The captain has my permission to use his descretion on if they are attempting to escape or not. Director Paranak out^|^ ^|^Singing Soil to USS Vesuvius, Captain Meritak here. We have been authorised to fire on you if you show any signs of an escape attempt. If we detect any unsanctioned use of any energy field or course change then we shall fire. You have been warned. Singing Soil out^|^ The captain cut the connection before Commander Fox could reply. Considering the threat, he thought it bext to alert the Commodore to the warning. He tapped his combadge 'Commodore Reckus, the Treewoods have given us a warning against any attempt to escape. They said they'd fire if they detected an energy surge. I think that would also mean the transporter' Unfortunately, Dr Reckus had only just finished programming a holodeck programme for the treatment of Sub-Director Shork. Without the transporter, it looked like Shork was going to have to be carried, but then they would have to monitor him in transit as well. 'Why isn't life ever easy for a Doctor?' he thought when he heard the news. <tag anyone who wants to help matters >
(OOC: We'll say I spent quite a few hours unconsciousness. As the meal took place in the evening I'm guessing, it's now morning. Let's see how descriptive I can be, shall we? ) Nephi's body slowly rose out of the deep pits of unconsciousness that the sedative had so abruptly plunged him into. He slowly grew strong as consciousness flowed like molasses through his body. Whatever he was lying on, it was at least soft. With great effort as if lifting a shuttlebay door with his bare hands, he opened his eyes. He found himself staring up at a high ceiling that looked like some kind of mesh. He tried to lift himself up slightly. Sitting up with some effort, he looked around his cell. It was of decent size. The floor was dirt, covered with moss. There was a dim natural light in the room, making it probably morning. There was a slight mist in the air, like the fog he was trying to shake from his mind. The walls of course were of metal. The door was of reinforced thick glass, he saw. The metal grid within it wasnt too close together, he might be able to stick his hand through if he broke the glass. He attempted to stand himself up. He fought against the lingering effects of the traces of sedative still in his system. It was as if someone had turned an artificial gravity setting up way to high. He felt as if something was pushing against every part of his body, holding him down. Looking up at the ceiling, he noticed the mesh again, and now noticed that there was glass laid overtop of it. Wanting to get a better look at it all, he took his boots and socks off. Sitting down in the corner of the cell, he placed his hands on one wall, and his feet up against the other. Pushing against the wall, he lifted himself off the floor. Slowly, using his lower hand and foot as an anchor, he would move his upper ones slightly up the wall, then reverse and bring the lower ones up. In this fashion, he moved slowly up the wall. About half a meter from the ceiling, he noticed a series of small holes in the line along the wall, parallel with the ceiling. He hadn't noticed them from the floor Curious as to what they were, he brought his head closer to them, examining them, wondering as to their purpose. He got his answer when a mist of water shot out of them, hitting him in the face. The spray was enough to startle him such that he lost his grip, and he fell to the floor. Frustrated, he tried to climb again, but the walls were now being covered in water, as were his hands and feet, and he couldnt get the friction neccesary to grip the walls like before. He gave up, bringing his knees closer to his chest. Crossing his arms, he placed them on his knees. A slight drumming began on the glass above him, and slowly got stronger. It was raining. The accomadations made in the cell to make it more hospitable for a Treewood were instead making the situation more and more uncomfortable for Nephi. The rain's artificial counterpart came through the holes, as if hissing at him, seemingly mocking his failed attempt. This cell wasn't going to be a pleasant experience at all.
A little while later, the rain and Jacobson's sprinkler rain ended. Grove Speaker, Ambassador Enk entered not long after and spoke 'briefly' to the desk guard. He appeared in front of Jacobson's cell soaking wet and looking happy. 'That was a fine rain this morning. Most refreshing and most healthy. You look less than happy CEO Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson. Of course, I suppose you would be trapped in there without the feel of real rain.' He didn't pick up on Jacobson's brief glare and continued. 'I see you have taken your shoes off, I'm sure many will appreciate the gesture of trying to know our soil. You must be commended for such an action, even when you are a prisoner. On the subject of imprisonment, Culturist Sark is currently under house arrest following the incident on the USS Vesuvius, but the Grove is applying pressure to have him released so he can be named as your defence counsel. I doubt Director Paranak will blatantly ignore the Grove so he will be appointed with all due haste unless you would like to contact your ship and request your own counsel, in which case just tell the guard you would like to speak to them. I strongly recommend the help of Culturist Sark, he is a most singular mind amongst the Treewoods.' Enk motioned for Jacobson to come closer to the door. Jacobson did so. 'I do not trust Director Paranak not to assert authority over justice, CEO Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson. I advise great caution. Try to bring the feelings of all to your aid. You seem more than intelligent enough to do so.' he whispered, indicating Jacobson's lack of footwear. It has been the first time in his career that Enk had needed to whisper. It didn't make him feel comfortable at all. 'Our justice system wants you to be innocent, CEO Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson' he proclaimed loudly in stark contrast to his previous tone. 'May the soil be rich for you'
Nika couldn’t understand why people would abandon two of their own, even if one was dead and the other was dying. Especially the dead one, Nika didn’t understand. After a person had died they could no longer take care of themselves or help their friends, but didn’t they at least deserve to be left in the soil to decompose, or whatever the Treewoods did with their dead.
Nika turned to face Commodore Reckus. “What should we do with the dead guard?” she asked. “It seems like we should do something with it, possibly cremate it, to allow for better decomposition?” Nika suggested. “At the very least, could we return it to them to do with as they will? Or will transporting it down to them qualify as ‘unsanctioned use of any energy field’?” Nika sighed slightly, it seemed like the Treewoods had used a lot of words without being very specific, she hadn’t the slightest idea what the energy field was. Was it only the cloaking device, or did it refer to other things.
Nika glanced at the body of the Treewood. “I would think that they would value having the nutrients returned to the soil so they can nourish their own young, but I’m not sure.”
Nephi stood in his cell, away from the wall. He would have sat down, or at least leaned against the wall, but each was rather wet. Doing either would have made his uniform more wet than it already was. Fortunately, his upper body was covered by three layers, keeping his drier.
Pacing, he thought about who he would before his counsel to be. A Treewood would be more familiar with the customs and collective mood of the people in such instances, and would be more likely to sway their opinion.
But a Starfleet counsel would be more likely to succeed, as they would be able to explain the difference between the walnuts he had been eating, and the nuts from which the Treewoods grew. But the question was who.
He first thought was of his fellow engineers. They were closest to him. But then again, none of them had the diplomatic ability necessary. Commodore Sonak would be the most successful in such an area, and would have the most vested interest in getting him freed, as it would be her duty as his Commanding Officer.
He went over to the door, and looked over at the desk guard. "Excuse me. I'd like to speak with my ship if that's alright."
He looked up. "Whom do you wish to contact?"
"I want to speak to Commodore Sonak Reckus, Commanding Officer of the Vesuvius," he said, adding the custom of full title to make sure the request was given due consideration.
"Very well," he said, standing. He came over, and opened the door. As Nephi stepped through, two Guards closed in on either side of him. They led him over to the desk.
The Desk guard opened the comm-link, and Nephi heard the familiar female voice. "This is Commodore Reckus. What can I do for you?"
The Desk guard waved Nephi over, and he stood in front of the screen. "Good day, Commodore," he said simply.
"Lieutenant, it's good to speak with you. You look wet, are you alright?" she asked. The earlier friction between them was smoothed over by her concern.
"Yes, I'm alright. The cell is just a little damp. Designed for Treewood comfort, not human comfort. But anyway. I'm going to be put on trial, and have been allowed to have my defense counsel be my choice if I wish. I'd like that to be you, Commodore. I can think of no one more appropriate."
"I'm sorry to have to pull everyone together, but we're going to need all the ideas we can get."
Jason took over, "Med scientists and botanists, you'll need to go down to sickbay and help them come up with a cure. Geologists, start going over any scans of the planet, if you can give us an edge it will help. Everyone else has to work on 'healing' ourselves."
As 3 groups of people left the room, L'Ola looked over at the current head of Science. He finally seemed at ease with everything.
"Okay then, let's see what we've got so far."
Just as Sonak was about to reply to her security chief, the OPS console beeped, denoting that someone was trying to get in contact with them.
"It's the Treewoods ma'am," Jared commented.
"Put them through," Sonak ordered, and was surprised to see a rather wet looking chief engineer. Her dislike of the young man instantly made way for concern, as despite his assurance, he didn't look well at all. She listened quietly as he explained the situation to her. After a long pause, she finally nodded. "I will beam down at the earliest convenience," she replied, "but I will have to gain permission first. They have their weapons armed and aimed at us. We could not even beam our wounded to sickbay."
Her eyes flashed anger, even though her face remained impassive as she said it. "Please put your guard back on and have him contact Paranak or Sark." After a few long seconds, she was face to face with Paranak. "I request permission to beam down to serve as my officer's legal counsel, as well as to beam down one of your deceased that was left behind. I am certain that you would wish for him to be reconnected with his home soil, so that his spirit may find rest."
<Paranak>
After signing off, she turned to Nikaila and Reman. "Ms Cir'Kem, please make sure that our shields and weapons remain down at all times, that nobody trigger happy gets even close to those systems. Commander Fox, until Commander Kanz returns to the bridge you have command of the ship. Mr Jared, tell me anything I need to know about their legal system. Do I need a change of appearance? I will tell you now that I will not allow a physical change, at worst, I will only have my hair dyed to remove the golden wash it seems to have."
<reman>
She then turned back to her security chief. "I would also like for you to arrange an honour guard to escort the dead Treewood back to the colony. You may be part of that escort yourself, if you wish."
<Nika>
A few hours later, Sonak reappeared from her quarters. She had chosen to wear a simple dress that had a healer's brown colour. It also made her green skin tone stand out more. In addition, she had chosen to remain bare-feet, even though she knew she would get uncomfortable doing so. At present, they needed to please the Treewoods, and if being uncomfortable achieved that, then that was the price she was going to have to pay.
As she stepped out, she was met by Reman and Jatan, the latter looking very unhappy about it all. "It is for the best," Sonak said, giving him a small smile, "you of all people should know that I have to do this."
Jatan nodded, though unhappily. "I know," he said, "and you are the best option for it."
Sonak smiled again, then turned to Reman. "What is next?" she enquired, "has Ms Cir'Kem prepared for the body to be brought to the transporter room?"
Commander Fox, until Commander Kanz returns to the bridge you have command of the ship. Fox nodded "Yes, Ma'am" he replied. As Sonak, Nika and reman walked off the bridge Fox stood up from the chair behind the helm console. He walked to the center of the bridge where the captain's chair stood. He sat down the comfortable chair. "This has been a while." he thought. "Almost forgot how comfortable this chair is." He tabbed a button on the small console next to it, rerouting the flight reading to it. He also looked at the sensor reading and swallowed. They sure wouldn't have a chance against the Treewood vessels, noticing all three ships had locked their weapons on the Vesuvius.
'Mr Jared, tell me anything I need to know about their legal system. Do I need a change of appearance? I will tell you now that I will not allow a physical change, at worst, I will only have my hair dyed to remove the golden wash it seems to have.'
'Usually you wouldn't need to change your apeparance, but they do think we are infected with something. Since they are probably currently prejudiced against humans who look like Lieutenant Jacobson, you should probably aim to look as little like him as possible.'
'What do you suggest?' the Commodore asked
'Well if we dye your hair blonde, I can give you some blue eye contact lenses to give the appearance of blue eyes. We could cover your ears with your hair and I don't think they'd notice. That way, if all else fails you could claim Jacobson's actions were due to his contamination. Oh, before I forget, it appears that the Treewoods never wear shoes, even when trying to imitate our clothes. I suggest you imitate theirs with earthy colours and no shoes. It might help'
'Very good, Commander' she replied 'How about the legal system?'
'As we could gather, it takes a long time for a trial to take place. Long speeches with lots of detail and as much sidetracking as you like are expected. You won't be interrupted. Also recommended is a waist high staff like Enk's but in red to denote a legal representative. Keep it in your hand and in view when speaking and use it to emote. A lot of Treewood communication seems to be in that strange sur-noise, so use the animal equivalent and gesticulate.'
Sonak took a few seconds to digest all of this and make sure she remembered it. 'Anything else?'
'They don't have true lawyers, they have scholars and philosophers who take the part. I suggest you take some people with you to look like your disciples. The more you appear to have, the more respected they'll see you as. Make sure they all have the same hair and eye colour and pale skins. We'll have to keep anyone who looks radically different out of sight of the Treewoods'
<tag Sonak>
As they were talking, Jared had replicated some contacts identical to his and some blonde hair dye. He handed them to the Commodore. 'You'll probably want to do this alone' he said.
As she went in, Jared went off to prepare the rest of her costume.
A little later Sonak appeared out of her quarters made up as Jared had suggested and looking as scholarly as possible.
Sonak smiled again, then turned to Jared. 'What is next?' she enquired, 'has Ms Cir'Kem prepared for the body to be brought to the transporter room?'
'They have the guard placed on a bier carried by four security guards. I made sure they were all as similar to you as possible. Even Miss Cir'Kem has wisely changed her eye and hair colour to match'
Jared handed her the red staff he had replicated in the larger Engineering replicator whilst Sonak was changing. He also placed a bronze headband consisting of two interweaving threads on her head.
'What's that for?' she asked
'It's to denote a captain. The Treewoods don't have Commodores so that's the closest appoximation to your rank. One last thing, Commodore. If the deception works then the Treewoods could well expect a cure for them not too long after this matter is settled. We can delay them by saying it's a different cure to one that would work on them. But I suggest that we try and find a cure for them as quickly as possible. If Shork survives then he might be convinced to help.'
"Yes, sir," Nika replied.
“I will be a part of that escort,” Nika informed Commodore Reckus. Nika may not have found the Treewoods to be friendly and she didn’t necessarily want to spend more time with them, but she felt that since the other Treewoods had left the guard behind, they obviously didn’t care that much about his death. And it seemed important to Nika that someone be at the funeral who wished he could have lived longer, and who cared enough to see him buried properly, and, for some reason, she felt that way.
Nika chose the other guards, and informed them that they were to die their hair blonde and use the contact lenses that Commander Jared had replicated. She also told them to wear whatever they thought would be appropriate for a Treewood funeral.
Nika decided very quickly against wearing her Starfleet uniform, it seemed to send a different message than the one she wanted to send. She chose to wear all white, since white was the color of snow it was also possible that it could be the color of death, and it wasn’t very likely at all to offend the Treewoods.
Although if the Treewoods didn’t generally wear clothes, would it be better to go with a brown similar to the trunks of the Treewoods? Nika wondered. Nika decided to wear brown, since that way it could be taken even that she was celebrating life that continues, even though there is death.
Nika glanced at herself in the mirror, and grimaced. Blonde hair and blue eyes really didn’t look good on her, and she had been rather limited in her choice of brown clothing. And her hair looked rather light, it seemed almost white. Still, she had done what she had to, hopefully that had been the hard part.
Nika met with the other security officers, and they carefully placed the guard on the bier. As he was already in the transporter room they didn’t need to carry him.
As the away team got into their costumes, L'Ola got a message saying she would be in command for a while. Despite this she decided to stay down in the labs. No point sitting around on the Bridge when there was work to be done.
Although making everyone look the same might work for a brief encounter, concrete evidence was going to be needed to prove that genetic differences did not mean illness.
=/\= Ensign Stokes to Science Lab 3 =/\=
"Carter here, go ahead Rob."
=/\= We're making progress... sort of. =/\=
L'Ola tried not to laugh at the series of expressions that crossed over Jason's face.
"Well send us a report of everything you've got. Actually, better make that a summary."
Robert Stokes started chuckling at the other end of the comm line, =/\= Sir, you've been my boss for long enough for me to know not to give you a long report. A ten line outline should make its way toward you in a minute. Stokes out. =/\=
Smiles appeared on a couple of faces, at least something was sort of going right. An enthusiastic cry from the other end of the lab almost got everyone's hopes up, but it turned out to be news that Ensign Collins' sister was getting married.
For about an hour the majority of the science staff sat in little groups throwing ideas around. Even Katia managed to leave Louise with a friend and go down to help.
But while they had a long list of ideas, nothing seemed to be working. Jason finally decided to catch everyone's attention. "We're coming up with some good ideas people, but unless we start turning them into..."
"Genes."
The whole room turned to look at Ed Tanner, who for obvious reasons suddenly seemed nervous. "Am I right in thinking that these Treewood guys look different from each other."
"Yes" L'Ola replied, trying to work out where this was leading.
Ed started to explain, trying to sound more confident than he felt. "Then it's obvious. They must all be genetically different, however small the difference is. And they are obviously happy to accept that as a group we're different to them. So all we have to do is show them the genetic coding that is common to everyone on the ship..."
"And then it will look like differences are just individual ones." Katia finished off. She looked around, people were thinking and satisfied looks were appearing.
"It's worth a shot." Jason said, "But we need to keep the differences obvious." A worried look appeared on his face. L'Ola read it and understood immediately.
"The away team."
What had seemed like a good temporary solution was suddenly a big problem. How can you show why things are different when they're trying to be the same?
Sonak didn't like having to change her appearance one bit. It was obvious to her that her chief of operations, and also their current resident expert on the Treewoods, thought that her choice of dress had to do with the 'skin' colour of the Treewoods. However, she had chosen it for a different reason altogether. While she was a commanding officer, her first priority was always the well being of her fellow crewmembers, and any other individual they had dealings with. At present, that included the Treewoods, so her choice of dress represented just that: the need to care for others.
They had only a few more minutes before they were expected to beam down. Now that Reman told her that she should bring others to attend to her and assist her, she knew who to call. "Commander Fox, Lieutenant Caldwell and Ensign McVaye, report to my quarters at once," Sonak called. She turned to Reman. "I need medical assistance, psychological evaluations, and someone with command experience should I become...unavailable," she explained, "Commander Fox used to be a starship captain, but had to resign due to unfortunate circumstances. Yet, he is still a very valuable asset to my crew."
Then the chime of the door went off, and Sonak was surprised to see the three men standing in front of the door so swiftly. They looked as if they had dropped everything they had been doing to come down when she called upon them. By the looks on their faces, they were equally surprised at her appearance. She chuckled softly when she saw their faces fall when Reman told them they were to appear similarly.
<Fox.....thoughts please lol>
Half an hour later, the four officers walked down to the transporter room and prepared to beam down to Treewood, together with the dead guard and Nika's honour guard. Seconds later, they were standing on the moist soils of the Treewood colony, where Paranak was awaiting them.
<Paranak>
Sonak stepped forward once they were greeted. "We have come to bring your deceased home, and as legal representation for Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson, whom you have accused of murder," she announced, "we ask that you take us to him immediately, so that he may tell us exactly what happened."
<Paranak>
Later, the small group of officers arrived at Nephi's cell, and Sonak stepped forward once more. This time, her tone was softer, and showed an edge of concern. "Lieutenant, how are you holding up?"
<Nephi>
<Fox...describe what you're seeing, feeling etc. Nephi, your story? Nika, what're you doing with the dead guard?>
"Read the number, look it up, check the details. Read the number, look it up, check the details..."
There was a cough from across the room. Lucy looked up and saw Kerry glaring at her.
"Sorry, was I talking again?"
"Yup. Why don't you go to the labs if you have to work?" Kerry tried to sound patient, but she was trying to read, and it was supposed to be a quiet area.
Lucy sighed, "My mother's down there."
She got a sympathetic response. It was during Kerry's first month on board that they'd come across the Vesuvius-C, and she remembered it vividly. "She won't act like your mother. Besides, you can't avoid her forever."
"You just want me to leave so you can read, right?"
"Yup, but you should go anyway. And while you're down there, say hi to Ed for me."
Jason was starting to relax a little. The DNA checking was going well. A team of people had each been assigned a group to compare . This would mean that there would be 6 codes at the end to look for the common pattern on.
The only thing that bothered him was how to bring up the topic of DNA, but being bothered by something wasted valuable lazy time in his opinion.
The lab door opened, and a nervous looking girl looked in.
"It's ok, no one's going to bite your head off." Jason called over when he saw her, "If you were looking for Commander Kanz, she just went down to sickbay to see how they were doing. If you're looking for Lieutenant Amasova, she's off duty."
Lucy smiled, "Actually, I just need to finish inputing some data for you."
"Oh, ok. Pull up a chair and hand some over, I'm bored with doing technical work."
The two of them sat comparing specimens and details, whilst the rest of the room worried about saving the ship.
Ed Tanner got to the end of a batch and decided to take a break. He wandered over to where Jason and Lucy were sat. "I can't decide whether I prefer my work or yours."
"What does yours consist of?"
"Finding a DNA code common to the whole crew."
Lucy smiled, "DNA isn't as useful as some people think."
Jason stopped what he was doing and looked her right in the eyes, "What do you mean?"
"If you look at my DNA and you scan my internal organs, you will get two completely different pictures."
"You had better go into hiding then..."
Nephi touched the ground, and felt that it was now reasonably dry. He sat down on it once more. It was getting very warm, and humid due to the moisture in the air left by the mist. Some moisture left through the spray nozzles, but most remained. It was close to producing a visible haze. He reached over, and felt his socks. They were still damp. He doubted they would dry in here.
He looked up, and Commodore Sonak was standing on the other side of the door. Commander Fox, Doctor Caldwell, and Counselor McVaye were also with her. Much to his surprise, they were all dressed in brown, with blonde hair, despite the fact that none of them was a blonde.
"Lieutenant, how are you holding up?" she asked.
He stood. "Rather well given the circumstances. It's rather damp and humid in here. An Inuit was not meant to live in the tropics," he said, wiping off some condensation on his side of the glass door with the tip of his finger.
"Any health problems, Mr Jacobson?" Doctor Caldwell asked. He was attempting to scan Nephi through the door.
"Not that I've noticed, Doctor. I'm a little uncomfortable from my wet clothing, but I rather doubt that'll give me any problems due to the temperature. Although I am slightly worried about getting heat stroke in here," he said, looking around the humid cell.
"What exactly did you do at dinner, Lieutenant?" she asked. "You've been accused of murder, yet I saw you do nothing unlawful."
"It was the walnuts I was eating, ma'am. I realized after I was cracking the second one what it must have looked like. As you may recall, the Treewoods grow from nuts like most trees. Neither I nor the Chef realized the error in time. I must appear like some horrific monster for eating what they must have thought were their young. We need to somehow convince them that those were regular walnuts I was eating, rather than their young."
"We have come to bring your deceased home," Commodore Sonak said, and Nika stepped forward.
“We have accorded him all the respect we would give one of own dead,” Nika continued, then silently followed the Treewoods who were gesturing. Nika and the honor guard eventually set the bier down, and were gestured to stay away from the body. They were led to some seats that had been isolated from the rest of the Treewoods, in fact they seemed more far away than was necessary, even if they carried a contagious disease.
A couple of the Treewoods cautiously approached the body, and sprayed it with something. Nika wasn’t sure if it was a decontaminant, something to preserve the body, or to help it decompose faster. The whole ritual was done very silently, something Nika empathized with. The silence at the beginning was one of only a few similarities between a Treewood funeral and a Firont one.
“I speak as if I have his voice,” Nika heard one of the Treewoods say, she didn’t recognize him. “It is a custom for the one who knows him best to speak for a Treewood who can no longer speak. I didn’t get a chance to know him very well, as his life was brutally cut short,” the Treewood explained, with an accusing glance toward Nika and the other security officers. Nika supposed being able to make accusatory glances at the Starfleet people would be an unexpected advantage from the need the Treewoods felt to keep them separate. Although Nika supposed it was possible that the Treewoods had planned it, she thought it far more likely that it was merely good luck for them.
“I know that he would have been angry and bitter,” the Treewood continued. Nika grimaced, this did not appear to be going well. But she didn’t feel guilty, neither she nor her guards had opened the fire, and they had not left his body behind and relied on others to return it to its rightful place. Nika guessed that the Treewoods may not care too much about the body, they seemed to mainly be ignoring it now.
“Even more though, he would have been saddened. He cared for others, and to see this disease wasting away people he cared about. This will not be the last memorial funeral I will attend. It may not even be the last I will speak at. But I know that he believed the Starfleet personnel had a cure, or at the least they thought they had a cure, and that mattered to him.
“He knew that even though the people who have returned the body to us may have brought us the disease in the first place, they firmly believe they are innocent. He would say that, and he would think that. His thoughts were mainly on the others that have visited our colony, and his mind searched for a solution to our problem. He did not find it, at least, he did not find it and share it with anyone. But, if he had been given this situation, he would have hoped. And he would have talked about the problems we now face. In the memory of him, even if we do not say what he might have said or do what he might have done, let us at least think of what he might have said. In his memory.” The Treewood finished, and glanced around at everyone. Nika thought that was the signal the service was finished, without them even having dealt with the body, but it appeared not, as another Treewood stepped forward.
By the looks on their faces, they were equally surprised at her appearance. Fox had a hard time not to laugh a bit at seeing Sonak with blonde hair and blue eyes. This quickly changed when Reman told them they needed to look alike that too. Reman handed Fox a vial of blonde dye and a case with contact lenses. Fox looked at Sonak. "But......" he protested, but Sonak cut him off "We have to." Sonak explained "We might have a better chance freeing Mr. Jacobson if we all look the same." Fox nodded "Okay Ma'am" he replied. "Also..." Reman started "Wear brownish clothes." Fox nodded and left the room, going to his quarters. On his way to his quarters Fox' thoughts drifted off. "Blonde hair..." he thought "I've dyed my hair blonded once on earth, it didn't fit me at all. It looked so weird." Near his quarters he almost bumped into someone, bringing him back to reality. He entered his quarters, walked to the bathroom and dyed his hair. He also put the contact lenses on and looked at his reflection in the mirror. "The things i have to do for a fellow officer." he thought. He left the bathroom again, walking to the closet with his clothes, grabbed a brown set and put it on. He then walked back to a mirror. "I doubt anyone would recognize me like this." he thought looking at his reflection. He sighed. "Okay time to go." He left his quarters to meet up with Soank, Caldwell and McVaye again. Together they walked to the transporter room. They were beamed down to the surface in two seperate groups. The blue glow had disappeared and Fox saw that Paranak was waiting for them. He started to look around a bit getting a good look of the place they were beamed to. It seemed they were in some kind of hall, but when he took a better look he saw the 'walls' were woodlike. "Trees" he thought. Then Fox looked up and saw this 'hall' had no roof. After his previous finding he wasn't really surpriced about that. Instead it looked like it were leafs that were up there. They gave some shade from the sun, but let enough light through. He felt the moist soil under his bare feet and shivered a bit. It felt cold, not really to his liking, but tried to ignore it. Then turned back to looking at Paranak as Sonak spoke to him. "We have come to bring your deceased home, and as legal representation for Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson, whom you have accused of murder," she announced, "we ask that you take us to him immediately, so that he may tell us exactly what happened." Paranak motioned the group to follow him and led them to Nephi's cell. It didn't look much different from the hall they beamed down to, only much smaller and no way out except the 'door' they stood in front of.
Sonak shook her head in clear disappointment. "I would have thought that you would have thought things through a little more lieutenant," she said softly, "though once the Treewood saw the nuts he could have alerted you before you engaged in such a foolish act."
She coughed slightly. "I fear that Vulcans are not built for the tropics either," she continued, "I hope we can deal with this swiftly, because I cannot stay in this humid environment much longer, not if I do not wish to become ill."
As if on cue, the spray nozzles started to emit water again, and this time Sonak and her party were showered as well. The mist that formed dampened their clothing almost instantly, and caused Sonak's long hair to stick to her face. Almost irritated, she wiped the hair from her face. "Explain to me why exactly you chose to consume nuts," she then asked, irritation showing in her voice, "surely you have had some form of botany when you were in the academy? Surely you had read the information from the briefing?"
Then, she felt a little guilty at the mention of the briefing, for Nephi might have missed that vital bit of information, because she had sentenced him to the brig for his behaviour. She only just managed to keep her face impassive, but her eyes showed how she felt.
Slowly, she turned to Fox. "Please talk to the Treewoods and see what you can do on getting him released into our custody. If this continues, Mr Jacobson will fall ill, and I sincerely doubt that the Treewoods will be able to cure him."
~~ Vesuvius Sickbay ~~
Jatan had been working very hard to keep the subdirector alive and his efforts seemed to have paid off. He was still submerged in a bath of his own life water, but at least his life signs had leveled out on the plains of being stable. It was a good sign, for now he was on his way to recovery.
Jatan grabbed the nearest hypospray and thoughtfully inserted the vial he needed, then pressed the instrument down on Shork's bark. He wasn't entirely sure how a hypospray could work on something wooden, but it had been working before. Soon, he watched as Shork slowly emerged from the fluids, looking about himself in wonder.
"Please, remain under the fluids as much as you can," Jatan insisted, gently pushing the injured Treewood down a bit. "Welcome back to the world of the living subdirector," he added sheepishly, "we had quite a job on keeping you among the living."
Shork took a moment to take into account the sickbay around him. Eventually he attempted to speak. 'Yearrnuraaang, hereeeeeaang fentasss moshiinoo semataaan' his sur-noise was also lower in pitch and insofar as any human could tell, also seemed to be more creaky. 'I'm sorry, Sub-Director' Jatan said 'but I cannot understand you' Shork slowly turned his head to Jatan 'I am sorry' he groaned 'maybe your translator can only understand when we speak clearly. I shall try to be clearer. I said 'thank you doctor'. I am surprised you knew enough of our bodies to be able to help me, you must be in the forefront of your field. In all honesty, Treewood medicince is rather primitive. We tend to be either healthy or dead. I congratulate you, doctor. What is your name?' 'Doctor Jatan Reckus' he replied 'Well, Doctor Jatan Reckus, has anything come of the fight with the guards? I know it was a mistake and I harbour no ill-feeling towards you. In fact, it was a Treewood weapon which felled me. Director Paranak must be seething, is anyone talking to him?' Dr Reckus wasn't a politican, but he could see the inherent benefit in Shork being able to testify that the Starfleet weapons weren't the first to be used. 'Commodore Reckus is currently down there to help our CEO and talk to Paranak' 'Ah, Commodore Sonak Reckus. I have no doubt that she is an able diplomat, but may I be able to talk to her? If she can tell Director Paranak that I am not dead then it may help to smooth things over.' <tag Sonak/Reckus>
~~~~~~Meanwhile on the rolling plains of the Treewood colony~~~~~~
The Treewood who stood forward at the funeral was none other than Grove Speaker, Ambassador Enk. 'It is my duty and privilege to speak on behalf of this fine comrade of ours' he proclaimed 'He was a most able Guard of the Grove, and in the few times we spoke, he was a friendly and intelligent Treewood. We cannot have him back, he belongs to the planet now, but we shall have his memory and we must do what is right. He lived a guard and he died a guard. In performing his duties to Treewoods as best he could, he was felled. Such is the way of war, and it shall undo us all if we all partake of it. His name was Parenk, and he guarded us so that we may live in peace.'
At that moment, the sur-noise of the Treewoods became a low, creaking tone. The noise grew louder as Enk took two flaming torches from an attendant and placed one either side of the fallen Treewood. As the fires touched the body, it erupted in flame and soon the whole body was ablaze. The Treewood stood and watched the body burn until nothing remained but cinders and ash. Enk moved away from the spot he had stood in and the group of Treewoods broke up, forming little groups and having low conversations.
Two attendants carried off the bier. They would carry it to the highest point nearby so the wind would spread the ash into the planet.
The starfleet group stood together, unsure quite what they were supposed to do. Enk appeared next to the group and laid a hand on Cir'Kem's shoulder. It was a gesture he had learned from Culturist Sark. 'I hope the Treewoods will remain peaceful, but these are changing times. Two generations ago, we speculated that other species exsted and now we are meeting them. I do not know anymore how this will pan out, but we can only hope for the best. For you personally, you can either speak to the group of Guard of the Grove Parenk's final moments or leave quietly. In all honesty, the former would help matters more. Just make sure you speak of him heroically. May the soil be rich for you, Starfleets.'
With that, Enk left.

Fox nodded "Yes, Ma'am, i will talk with them about it. But can Caldwell come with me? We've got to convince them this.." Fox pointed to the cell i which Nephi was imprisoned "isn't going to do his health any good. A doctor might convince them easier." Sonak nodded toward Caldwell "He's right, go with him." She said. In the mean time Fox had informed with one of the guards who he should talk with and came walking back. "We'll have to talk with Paranak." he said. "This guard..." pointing to the Treewood he talked with "will bring us to him." The treewood guard started to talk "If you two will follow me." Fox and Caldwell nodded and followed the guard. After a long walk, they entered some kind room and saw Paranak stand on the other side. "They wanted to see you." The guard spoke. Paranak slowly nodded and the guard left again. "Now tell me what you wanted to see me about." Paranak said. After a long discussion with Paranak they came to something they had to talk about with Sonak. Fox and Caldwell were brought back to Sonak and McVaye. "Any result?" Sonak asked. Fox nodded "Yes, but it needs your permission. Nephi can be held in our brig, but still in their custody." "Meaning....." Sonak started "Yes Ma'am.." Fox continued "Treewood guards would have to come to the Vesuvius and will be with Jacobson all the time. It's the best i could get out of it, Paranak didn't want anything else, he wants to know if you will agree with this."
