After Sonak had seen the admiral off, she went for a long walk about the ship. It had been a long while since she had done it. ~you might get lost someday~ she chided herself, then laughed. Just as she pressed her hand on the old-fashioned door that led to the library, Jatan paged her.
"We have a new addition to the crew," he called cheerfully, "would you care to welcome her into the world and aboard the ship?"
Sonak smiled. "But of course," she said, "tell the lucky mother that I shall be right down." She pulled her hand back and the door veered back into place. "Another baby," she mused, "we will need a permanent nanny soon, and a teacher. I will talk with admiral MC7 about assigning one to us on our next leave."
The Vulcan commodore took the long route towards sickbay, thereby finishing her tour of the primary module. The tertiary and secondary module were in dock undergoing repairs, overseen by Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson and Lieutenant Commander Sarah O'Malley. She frowned at that, as long as she'd been in command of this vessel they hadn't been this damaged before.
At last she arrived at sickbay, where Jatan gave her a quick hug and a kiss, then led her towards Katia, who was holding a small bundle in her arms. Beside the bed sat Jason, looking as happy as he'd ever be. Sonak bent down to look at the infant, and smiled. "You have a beautiful baby there Katia," she offered, "my congratulations to both of you. What have you named him or her?"
"We've decided to name her Louise ma'am, "Katia replied.
Sonak held up her hand. "Please, I am off duty. There is no need to call me ma'am off duty." She smiled at the both of them. "Take a few days off to enjoy this new bundle of joy," she said, "we are due for shoreleave in a few days, but you both may take these few days off." She stepped back and smiled softly. "Please excuse me, but I have another duty to attend to."
She walked to the office and touched the computer keyboard. "Computer, locate Commander Kanz."
=^= Commander Kanz is in science lab two=^=
"That figures," Sonak murmured.
=^= Please rephrase request =^=
Sonak ignored the computer and walked her way down to science lab two. "Commander?" she called, and the Betazoid science officer appeared, looking rather dissheveled and she appeared to have been crying.
"Commander, are you all right?" Sonak asked, looking her science officer over with concern. At L'Ola's nod, she continued. "Very well if you say so. At any rate, I have come to offer you the position of first officer. You have served this ship very well and it is my belief that you have earned the position." She waited quietly for L'Ola's answer.
<Kanz>
Later, Sonak called Nephi into her office. "How are the repairs going lieutenant?" she asked politely, after inviting him to sit down, "if you are experiencing any difficulties, please let me know instantly."

"Very well if you say so. At any rate, I have come to offer you the position of first officer. You have served this ship very well and it is my belief that you have earned the position."
L'Ola was was than a little surprised, she honestly hadn't expected it, "You want me to do the job?"
Sonak smiled, "It's yours if you want it."
"Okay, thanks" she sounded a little unsure of herself.
"If you want I can leave it a day or two before I tell the rest of the crew."
"No, it's okay. It will be an interesting challenge. Thank you" a faint smile started to appear on her face.
"Congratulations, Commander. This seems to be an eventful day for your department."
With all the obvious choices for temporary command of the science department otherwise occupied, it was going to take some imagination to keep things running. "I'll talk to everyone to let them know things will be flexible for a while. It's only a few days 'til shoreleave. I take it Kat's okay then."
Sonak nodded in reply. L'Ola was pleased. Things had been up and down and everywhere for Katia lately, at least she could be happy about something.
"Is it a boy or a girl?" A voice from the corner asked. Sonak looked a little surprised. Lucy stepped out and looked aroung, "Sorry, I was just wondering."
L'Ola looked at Sonak expectantly, "Well?"
"Girl"
Lucy grinned, "Cool. Oh, and congratulations" she turned to L'Ola and gave her a hug, "You deserve it."
"Unfortunately I must move on, I seem to be visiting everyone today. I will arrange a meeting with you later, Commander. And Lucy, make sure she relaxes a little." Sonak smiled again before leaving the Kanz girls alone to catch up again.

Nephi was laying on the ground under a console in the Primary module Engine Room, repairing an ODN connection to one of the sensor arrays.
=/\= Commodore Sonak to Lieutenant Jacobson, please report to my Ready Room =/\=
He tapped his comm-badge. "On my way, Ma'am." He pulled a tool out of his Engineers vest and sealed the panel back in place that he was working inside. ODN connections weren't something he liked to leave exposed, even faulty ones.
He pulled himself out from under the console, and headed to the Bridge. He was still wearing the Vest, but his quarters were all the way on Deck 15, near Main Engineering, and he really didnt feel like going down there just to change. Besides, he didn't feel it necessary.
He tapped the key, and after the door opened, he walked into the Ready Room. "How are the repairs going Lieutenant?" she asked politely, after inviting him to sit down, "if you are experiencing any difficulties, please let me know instantly."
He sat down in the chair. He had to readjust some of the equipment hanging on his belt in order to do so. "Please forgive the uniform, but I found it more useful, and I was on Deck 3 at the time you called," he said as he did so.
She nodded, and he began. "Well, repairs are going pretty well, thanks to Starbase Engineering. We've got a few minor hull breaches on the Secondary and Tertiary modules. That, and along with slight damage to the Secondary's docking ports, makes it currently impossible for us to put the ship back together into one piece. The Secondary has damage to its port nacelle, which should be corrected in a day or two. That module also has power relays blown out everywhere, along with damage to the sensor arrays, and weapons systems. I've rather amazed that its still in one piece. Sarah deserves a lot of credit for keeping it that way. As far as difficulties, they're only technical. Sarah and I are getting along splendidly now, and even had an enjoyable lunch together today. I'd say we'll have this ship up and running again in a little over a week."

Sonak eyed her chief engineer suspisciously. Ever since he'd tried to burn her when they were stuck in the past, she had a little trouble trusting him, and felt uncomfortable around him. She did realise that he wasn't himself at that time, and that her antipathy towards him was highly illogical, but it was how she felt about it, and not even visits to McVaye would change that.
"I am relieved to hear that you and Ms O'Malley are no longer obliged to bash one another's heads in," she said quietly, then handed him a PADD. "I am sure you are already aware that Commander Martens resigned his commission. With Commander first class L'Ola Kanz taking the first officer's position, that would make you commander of the tertiary module as I need Fox on the primary module."
She leaned back in her chair and paused. "Of course, that means that Sarah moves to the primary module when we are in MVAM. At any rate, we will have the ship ready within a week then? That is gratifying to hear, no matter how much I like spending time with friend and relatives on the starbase. My brother seems to have decided to stay on Bellicose for a while."
Just then her readyroom went completely dark. "What is this?" she enquired, gazing in the direction she assumed Jacobson was still occupying a seat. A few seconds later, emergency ilumination came up. Sonak raised an eyebrow at her CEO. "And here I thought the primary module was undamaged."

As the damaged modules of the Vesuvius hung in their docking bays as they were extensively repaired, Daniel was enjoying shoreleave on Bellicose. It had been hectic mission, and it still buzzed inside Daniel's head, making it impossible for him to figure everything that'd happened.
He'd dropped himself on a comfortable couch in his temporary quarters on the starbase, a big ice cold can of sparkling soda stood next to him, and his favorite music sounded through the quarters. The perfect way to unwind from the laden events of late. Daniel closed his eyes and enjoyed the comfort and the music. Then he dozed off.
He opened his eyes and looked at the marmalade sky above him. He was lying on his back, and when he got up he discovered that he found himself in a boat that slowly drifted through a river. Tangerine trees stood at the banks of the river.
"Daniel," Daniel heard his name being called by a woman's voice. He looked around and saw a young girl standing at the banks, next to a big tangerine tree, motioning for him to come. She looked strange, her eyes almost looked as if they were kaleidoscopes.
The boat came to a halt at the bank, and Daniel got off. He walked into a field of green and yellow flowers that appeared to be made from cellophane. They towered high above his head. Daniel looked at the girl again, but had to shield his eyes from her, as her eyes were as bright as the sun. When he looked again, she was gone.
Daniel's eyes snapped open, and he looked around with a bewildered stare in his eyes. He was back on Bellicose. He felt confused, for some reason the strange environment in his dream looked very familiar. Then he heard the last lines of the song the computer was still playing. "Lucy in the sky with diamonds." "Computer, stop the music," Daniel said. So it's true what they say, you dream about things they whisper in your ears when you sleep, Daniel thought.
He stretched his arms above his head and yawned, his stomach rumbled and Daniel decided that a visit to the starbase's messhall wouldn't be the worst idea. He exited his quarters, and felt that he was in a good mood today, though he had no idea what'd caused that.
It wasn't very crowded in the messhall when Daniel got there. He looked at his watch, and found that it was 1500. Figures that there aren't a lot of people, Daniel thought. He had the replicator make him a stack of sandwiches, and found a nice place to sit next to a starport.
He worked on the sandwiches as he stared out into space. When he'd finished the six of them he got up and left the messhall. Daniel made up his mind and decided to go and have a look at how the repairs were going at the Vesuvius. He went for the first module, where his quarters were situated too.
He strolled along the Vesuvius's corridors, and decided to pass by his office, to see if he'd left everything appropriately. He sat down in the comfortable chair behind his desk, and had it spin a feel rounds. Daniel stared at the ceiling as the room revolved around him. Then, everything went black. Am I unconscious? Daniel asked himself. The emergency lighting in his office flickered on. No I'm not.

Nephi was a bit surprised when the power went out.
"And here I thought the primary module was undamaged," the shadowed form of Commodore Sonak said.
Nephi sighed. "Well, for the most part, it was. However, there was a small phase variance in the power flow, so I asked Crewman Reynolds to take care of that for me. Apparently he's still a little jumpy from the incident with the Klingons. And when he gets jumpy, he tends to get a bit clumsy. He once came close to blowing on the tractor emitter when I asked him to realign it."
He tapped his comm-badge. "Jacobson to Reynolds, what happened?"
=/\= Sorry about that, Lt. I over-corrected for the variance, sending the entire power network out of whack. And I can't get it back online. You're going to have to come down here, Sir =/\=
"Alright, I'll be there in a few minutes. Jacobson out." he said, tapping his commbadge. "Before I go, Commodore, I do have one thing to discuss now. Since I'm being promoted, I'll need a new Tertiary Module Chief Engineer. I'd have Sarah for Primary, and Lt Carl Jenkins for Secondary. With your permission, I'd like to promote Lt JG Alma Grant to the rank of Lieutenant and assign him that position. Alma is a tough, resiliant guy, and I think he can handle it."

"Which module are you working on?" Carrie asked, annoyed with herself that she didn't already know.
Sam thought for a moment, "Tertiary, I think. It's mostly battle damage from the bits I've seen. Although what those lunatics did to the hull I have no idea."
"Yep, that'll be the tertiary module then" Lucy said without looking up. Of course, she did look up when she worked out everyone had turned to face her, "What?"
"Go on, Miss know-it-all, what did they do to the hull?"
"They ran into another ship of course." Ed answered as he walked up to join them. "Now I wasn't on that module, lucky really since you guys know how I feel about life support failures. I was on the module that had to pick up the pieces." He rolled his eyes.
Carrie laughed, "Let me guess, you had to dig people out with your bare hands."
"Something like that..."
=/\= Commander Kanz to Chief Tanner =/\=
Ed looked at his friends nervously before tapping his commbadge, "Tanner here."
=/\= I just thought I should let you know, you'll have to report in to Ensign Stokes in the morning. Lieutenants Carter and Amasova have still got time off, and I'm otherwise occupied. =/\=
Lucy looked at Ed and mouthed the words First Officer.
"Okay, well congratulations Commander. Uh, is Katia's baby a boy or a girl?"
=/\= Thank you, and you can ask Lucy that as well. Kanz out. =/\=
"Girl." Lucy said, hoping to attract as little attention as possible.
Carrie smiled, "Someone in your department had a baby? Cool." She paused for a moment, "How do you think she knew you were talking to Lucy?"
"Parental instinct." Sam said without thinking. He very quickly shut up, but not before he received an inquisitive look from four faces, and a glare from another. He swore under his breath.
Lucy wanted to do the same, but decided on the safer route of action. "She's my legal guardian, I thought you guys knew that."
"Oh yeah, I forgot." Carrie replied, clearly not having known in the first place.
"Have you finished with that phase decompiler yet?" Rilak called over.
"Sure, take it." Sam replied, pushing it away slightly without looking away from what he was doing.
"So" Rilak started, clearly bored of working in relative silence, "Did you have a good evening?"
He got a smile in reply, "It was great. Got together with quite a few friends and nearly got one of them into loads of trouble. Apart from that, it was great. How was yours?"
"Boring. I hate working stupid shifts, it really dents your social life."
Quite uncharacteristically, Sam put down the calibrator he was holding and turned to face his work mate. "What makes you say that?"
"No one wants to be friends with someone who works unpredictable hours, can I help that?"
"Let me guess, parents giving you hassle over your brother's marriage again."
Rilak nodded, "That would be correct."
"Well don't worry, I know someone who would be great with you, and she's been friends with me for long enough to get used to the weird hours we work."
"Thanks Sam, I'll let you know. How are things with you at the moment anyway? I feel like we haven't worked together for ages. Still friends with Lu-"
"Shh, quiet." Sam noticed someone vaguely familiar walking in their direction. He stood up, "Hi Commander, are you still working?"
L'Ola looked a little surprised, "Oh hi... Sam. No, I just thought I'd get a look at how repairs are going though. Just out of curiousity really."
"These here are, obviously, going very well. Although I hear that some of the guys are having problems attaching new bits of hull." He tried not to laugh.
"Yes, very funny. I didn't exactly come out of it okay either." She was very concious of someone watching the conversation. "Do you two work together then?"
Rilak was still a little confused about this conversation, "Sometimes, although not as often as I'd like. Umm, if you don't mind me asking, who are you?"
She thought for a moment before answering, "L'Ola Kanz. Commander by rank, Scientist by trade, Position on this ship has apparently changed to First Officer, and a relative of one of his friends."
"Oh, okay."
"Well, it's been nice talking. I'll run into you again soon no doubt."
Sam waited until she was out of hearing range before turning back to Rilak, "Note the relative bit, and the surname."
"You know," Rilak said, deciding an earlier topic would be more appropriate, "I would like to know a little more about this friend of yours..."

Sonak nodded at the chief engineer. "You would know best who would be suitable for the job. Make it so Mr Jacobson," she said, then dismissed him with a wave of her hand.
She felt uncomfortable around him, and didn't want to spend too much time in the same room with him. Just as Nephi left the room, Jatan Reckus walked in. Instantly, Sonak's entire demeanor changed, and her eyes lit up as she saw him.
Her eyes fell on the bag he was carrying. "Lunch," he grinned, as he planted the bag on her desk. I'm seeing to it that my wife commanding officer is taking the sustenance she needs."
Sonak raised an eyebrow at her husband. "You would know perfectly well that I do not eat lunch," she said, then smiled, patting her thighs jokingly. "I have a figure to maintain."
Jatan flashed one of his charming grins at her. "Ah...but you will, because I've reserved the holodeck for some working out later this afternoon. You do want to pass your physical don't you?"
At the mention of physical, Sonak frowned. "Is that really necessary?" she asked, "lately I have spent so much time in sickbay I would think that would be sufficient data gathered for oh..the next two or three physicals. Why do you not call Lucy Kanz in, she is due one and she has come aboard recently. You of all people should know that new arrivals ought to report in for a physical, whether they be permanent residents, or guests."
She paused. "Speaking of which, Nathan shall be coming over for a visit this evening, you may want to call him and his son in too as soon as he arrives." She grinned. Nathan loved sickbays just as much as she did, but then...the both of them were doctors and would prefer to be in sickbay as physician, rather than patient.
Just as Jatan left, Nephi walked back in. "Problem lieutenant?" Sonak asked as she got up to leave her readyroom. She found Fox at the helm. "Mr Fox, if you wish you can continue the shuttle practice you had to break off a while ago. Go enjoy your shoreleave, and do not make me make it an order."

She found Fox at the helm. "Mr Fox, if you wish you can continue the shuttle practice you had to break off a while ago. Go enjoy your shoreleave, and do not make me make it an order." Fox spun around on his chair as he heard Sonaks voice. "I will soon Ma'am. But i'd like to help with the test flights once the modules get out of the repair dock again." "I will think of it Commander, can't promise anything yet." She replied and walked to the turbolift and left the bridge. Fox spun his chair back facing his console again. He tabbed a few buttons. Not much later the voice of his previous flight instructor could be heard. "So, you're back again Mr. Fox." he said "Aye." Fox' only reply was "Good. Let's see the schedule." he paused for a little while. "I have a spot for you tomorrow, 7:00 hours." Not knowing when they'd go on a mission again Fox agreed this appointment. "See you tomorrow on bellicose then. Dock 2." "Will be there, Sir." Fox replied and the channel went silent again. Fox spun around on his chair again, got up and left the bridge. "Finally." he thought "Some time off to spent with Wendy." He boarded Bellicose and walked through its corridors to Wendy's quarters wanting to surprice her. Once there he 'knocked' on the door. A little later he heard 'Come in' from the other side of the doors and they opened. He didnt walk in immediately. Not seeing anyone enter Wendy walked to the doors to check who was there. Seeing it was Fox she jumped in his arms and kissed him. Looking eachother in the eyes she said: "I've missed you." "I have missed you too." he replied. Both walked into her quarters. The doors closed behind them. They sat down on a bench and started chatting about the everything that happened since last time they were together. At some point she asked: "I'm a little thirsty, you want something to drink too?" Fox nodded "Yes" he said smiling and stood up and walked to the replicator. "What do you want?" he asked. "Just a water." she replied. Not much later both materialized in the replicator. He took the two drinks and walked back, put them on the table and sat down again next to her. As they continued their chat, taking a sip of their drinks once in a while. After some time Fox got an idea. "Want to go to the promenade? And after that to the holodecks?" he asked. She smiled at him.. "Yea, lets go." she replied. They both quickly took the last sip of their drinks and put the glass and cup on the table, stood up and left her quarters spending the rest of the day together at the promenade and the holodecks.

I think the Vesuvius can now officially call itself a wreckage, Daniel thought as he got up from the chair behind his desk in his office. The emergency illumination made his office look strange, and it somewhat gave him the creeps, though he couldn't place why.
He strolled through the corridors of the primary module, and entered a turbolift. Luckily it still worked, as he wanted to get off the ship. A little trip later he stood in Bellicose's spacedock, and looked up at the battered primary module of the Vesuvius-A.
The starbase's promenade was his next goal, and he took the time to get there. It was a busy place. Daniel decided to grab a drink in a bar and sank down at a table after ordering a refreshment.
"Dan! Hey Dan is that you?" Daniel heard a vaguely familiar voice call. A young man with brown hair approached him. A smile appeared on Daniel's face, as he got up and hugged the man. "Garreth, how have you been? Take a seat, take a seat," Daniel said, "you want a drink?"
A drink was brought, and Daniel took a good look at his younger brother. "What brings you here?" Daniel asked. "I'm on an excursion with the Academy, my first time on a starbase," Garreth told enthusiastically. "So how's your training going?" "Good, good, my grades are good, but weapons training is still a problem, I somehow keep on overheating the phaser rifles," Garreth explained.
Daniel knew that his brother had joined the marines, and he could see that he was on good shape. "You'll be a great marine, the weapons training'll work out." "Thanks, so how are things on the Vesuvius? I heard it was docked here, so I went to find you," Garreth said.
"Cool, hey I can give you a tour if you want?" "That would be awesome!" The two brothers finished their drinks, and Daniel led the way back to the spacedock. "Wow, she's big!" Garreth said. "This is only one of its three modules," Daniels said. "It's thrice as big?!" "Yeah," Daniel said.
"But I must warn you, it's a wreck, so it's pretty messy inside," Daniel said as he and his brother entered the vessel. They almost tripped over an engineer as they did so, and they laughed. Daniel showed Garreth whatever he could, and his brother followed him with big eyes, he was on a unique starship, and got to see everything he wanted too, a dream coming through.
After the tour the two stood in the dockingbay again, a big smile on Garreth's face. "That was awesome Dan! Darn, I need to hustle now, we were supposed to assemble on the promenade five minutes ago, what about a holodeck tonight?" "Sounds good," Daniel said. The agreed to meet at the same bar again at 2000 hours, and then said goodbye to each other.
Daniel decided to head back for his temporary quarters. It was good to have seen his brother again, it seemed as if it had been ages. Softly humming Daniel arrived at his quarters, and got prepared for a long shower.

When Sonak waved her hand indicating for Nephi to leave, he did just that, leaving her Ready Room. He noticed that she was a little cold toward him lately. However, given the fact that he almost had her burned at the stake, this was rather understandable.
When he passed into the Bridge, he noticed how dark it was. As soon as he had entered, he was hit by a barrage of complaints, with people complaining they couldn't do their work. He noticed however, that the Engineers weren't saying a word, just continuing their work in the dark the best they could.
"I know, I know! It's rather dark in here. I'm on my way to the Module Engine Room to figure out what exactly went wrong," he said to the complaining crowd, which were slowly moving toward him. He moved to the turbolift, and went to the Engine Room on Deck 3.
When he walked in, he fortunately found Sarah already handling the situation. "So what's the problem exactly?" he asked as he reached her.
She looked over at a console, and sighed in frustration at the situation, then turned to him. "It would appear that Reynolds was attempting to correct the phase variance by tweaking the output from the fusion reactors. Unfortunately, he tweaked it the wrong way, disrupting the entire fusion reaction. And you know how hard it is to cold-start a cold-fusion reaction."
Nephi nodded. "I most certainly do. In the meantime, I've got complaints from people on the Bridge about the light, or lack thereof, they have to work in. Is Carl on this module?"
"If he's not, he will be soon. I called him in when the power went out. Made sense since he's a Power Systems Specialist," she responded.
"Excellent. Have him bring a portable generator to the Bridge. That should ebb the wave of complaints I recieved."
"Will do. What are you going to do though?" she asked.
He grabbed a handheld power source. "I'm going to re-illuminate the Commodore's Office. I'm sure she'll appreciate it."
"I bet she will," she said, as he turned to leave. He headed back to the Bridge. He waved off the tide of complaints again, and headed back into the Ready Room. Doctor Reckus was now there, and Nephi paused to left him pass. He then walked in.
"Problem lieutenant?" she asked, seeing him enter.
"Well, yes. Your Ready Room is still dark," he said, and chuckled. She didn't laugh, but he didnt care. He proceeded to her desk, and attached the power source to its surface. He pressed a few keys, and the room illuminated.
"But now that's no longer a problem. I have a portable generator on the way to take care of the Bridge as well. If you have any more problems, let me know," he said, and turned to leave.

Sonak was grateful for the return of lights in her readyroom, for the darkness had started to become annoying; she didn't like being blind. "Thank you Mr Jacobson," she said, "I trust that engineering does its best to keep up with the work, and ignore the complaints from the crew. If anyone gives you a hard time about them, let me know. Most of the crew should be enjoying shoreleave - for as long as it lasts - anyway."
Of course, she had wanted to take some shore leave too, but she was expecting Nathan in the morning, as he had wanted a tour of the ship. Just after her wedding they hadn't quite come around to it anymore; all he'd seen so far was main sickbay.
"Anything else lieutenant?" she asked, then held out some obscure engineering tool. "I believe this is yours," she said, "I nearly tripped on it a few minutes ago as I myself tried to get the ilumination back on-line." She smiled softly. "To no avail of course, I am no engineer."

He took the tool from his Commanding Officer. "Ah yes, thank you. This is an isomagnetic decoupler. It allows you to unlock any security seal on the ship. You have to have a rather high security clearance just to be able to possess one. It's higher than a Lieutenant usually has, but as you know, I have given a higher clearance because I'm Chief Engineer. In fact, this is the only isomagnetic decoupler on the ship. Glad you found it."
He finally left the Ready Room and walked back onto the Bridge. Carl and a Technician whom Nephi didn't recognize were just arriving with the portable generator. Nephi walked over. "How goes it, Carl?" he asked.
"Well, the Bridge is dark if you hadnt noticed," he said, and chuckled. "So we're installin' a portable generator," he said.
Nephi nodded. "Yes, I noticed. I asked Sarah to ask you to do it."
"Ah, should have guessed. Ah yes, sorry. This is a new technician, Crewman John Phillips; just arrived. Crewman, this is Lieutenant Jacobson, our Chief Engineer."
Phillips nodded. "Good to meet you, sir."
"Likewise, crewman," he said. "I'd shake your hand but you're carrying a generator. I'm going back to Engineering, and then probably the currently-dead reactor. Put the generator by the Engineering station. Don't want anything to happen to it, and the Engineers will be careful with it. Carry on, gentlemen," he said, and continued onto Engineering.

After what seemed hours, the bridge of the Vesuvius' primary module finally sprang back to life as power coursed through the various conduits that led through the bulkheads. Many a crewmember present on the bridge had to squint against the sudden full ilumination, and the return of the sounds which were normal for a bridge under full operation seemed almost deafening after the days of quiet.
Sonak stood in the middle of the command area, quietly glancing past the crewmembers that were working at their various duty stations and she couldn't help but feel extreme pride. Despite the lack of power and light, they still continued to do their jobs as best as they possibly could.
Glancing sideways, she found her new first officer regard them with equal pride. Only days before, she'd been merely the chief of science, but Commander first class L'Ola Kanz had slid smoothly and without trouble into her new role. "They are doing extremely well," Sonak said, "and they have deserved their shoreleave, without a doubt."
Many crewmembers had already enjoyed shoreleave, but not so much the senior staff of the USS Vesuvius. Finally, Sonak gave her first officera mischievous glance. "Meet me in holodeck two in an hour," she said, "then we are going make sure that these crewmembers get their well deserved time off on Bellicose, and we the senior staff are going to have a little fun."
She ignored Lola's questioning look, but merely smiled -very un-Vulcan like- and walked off the bridge. It was fortunate, for her, that she found holodeck two in top working order. Quickly, she accessed her list of favourite programs, and smiled as she found the one she'd been looking for. "This will be perfect," she whispered, as she told the holodeck to load the program.
=^= Program complete =^=
The holodeck doors swooshed open before her, and breath caught in her throat as she gazed upon the mansion that had belonged to her human grandfather. She stepped in, and the doors closed behind her. "Welcome my child," she heard the familiar voice of her grandfather behind her. Soon, she found herself caught in the old man's embrace. "Have you not brought your friends?"
Sonak smiled at her grandfather, Jonathan van Breughel and returned the quick embrace. "They will be here shortly," she said, "though a few may not have too fond a memory of being here." She recalled the time where an alien entity had possessed her then chief engineer, and through which her entire senior staff had been 'killed'. Of course, nobody had really died, thanks to the holodeck safeties, but it had been a horrendous experience nonetheless.
There was, however, one fond memory Sonak had of that episode; it had brought her and Jatan together. "Grandfather, I have some news," she said, and her smile widened as she showed him the wedding band. "Remember Doctor Jatan Reckus?"
Grandfather cast her a knowing smile. "Of course I do," he said, "you speak of no-one else everytime you come here. So he has finally had the nerve to marry you eh? Very good child, I can see you are very happy now."
Sonak nodded. "And he is as a father to my children. Ever since Seliv's death I had doubted I would ever be happy again, but with him, it is as if I found completion of my soul."
The hour went by quickly, in which grandfather and granddaughter caught up on old times. Not a minute past the hour, L'Ola walked into the holodeck, and Sonak saw her freeze a moment, then relax. "There is nothing better than this program to find some relaxation and have the perfect setting for a little party," Sonak said, "I have arranged a barbeque party with my grandfather. We should inform the crew to report here in half an hour, dress code casual. However, we shall not tell them what to expect."
L'Ola nodded, and by now grinned mischievously as well.
"This is commodore Sonak, all senior staff report to holodeck two in thirty minutes," Sonak called, then glanced at her first officer. "This should give us the time to get changed too," she said, and motioned at their uniforms.
Fifteen minutes later, Sonak returned to the program, wearing a long flowing red dress. Her children were laughing as they ran up to their great-grandfather, whom they would never meet in person. Jonathan van Breughel had passed away when Sonak had been a teenager.

"This is commodore Sonak, all senior staff report to holodeck two in thirty minutes," Nephi heard over the comm system.
Sarah looked over from the reactor's master control station. "Looks like you get take a break."
Nephi looked up from the reactor's diagnostic assembly. "Sure looks that way. I wonder why though. Probably recreation, but what kind?"
"Well, you could check if you wanted to," Sarah replied, grinning wickedly.
Nephi grinned back, and went and joined her at the Master Control station.
"You two are bad," Carl said, and shook his head.
Sarah looked over. "Oh come on, like you wouldn't do the same if you were the Chief Engineer and had access to such information."
Carl hesitated for a moment, then said "Ok, so maybe I would, but that doesnt mean its a good idea to be spying in on other's programs." Nephi ignored Carl's warning. He entered his access code, and accessed the holodeck control system. He tried to gain access to the information about the program running, but the computer beeped at him.
=/\= Access to that system is encrypted =/\=
"Thats odd. On who's authority?" he inquired.
=/\= Commodore Sonak Reckus =/\=
"Okaaay.....staying away from that one!" he said, thinking of how much trouble he would be in if he violated the Commodore's privacy.
"Yeah, unless you're looking to get yourself demoted," Sarah said dryly.
"Indeed. Looks like you're right, Carl. She didn't want me breaking in. Now, back to work," Nephi said, and they went back to finding the mechanical flaw that Reynolds had caused.
20 minutes later, he left the reactor bay, and headed for holodeck two. He was quite intrigued by this program, due to the fact that the Commodore has encrypted access to it.
He stepped in, and found himself in the foyer of what seemed to be a rather large Terran mansion. He saw an older human gentleman he didnt recognize, and standing next to him was Sonak, looking rather beautiful in a rather atypical long red dress.
He approached her. "Commodore, may I ask why exactly we are here? I tried to access information on the program, but found that you had encrypted access to that data."

"Of course I have encrypted the program," Sonak said, almost annoyed that her CEO had tried to find out what the program was before entering it, "it is my personal program, as I would not want anyone to use it without my presence. It is home away from home."
She beckoned to the elder male beside her. "Grandfather, meet my new chief engineer, Lieutenant Nephi Jacobson."
The older man looked the CEO over and snorted. "Not exactly tall is he?" he said, winking at his granddaughter, "if I recall, your other chief engineer was taller."
Sonak nodded, and appeared to be going through extensive trouble to keep herself from bursting out in laughter. "I am not exactly tall myself grandfather," she retorted instead, "and Commander Martens sadly could not attend. He has resigned his commission to return home and tend to his daughter, who has been in a terrible accident."
Jonathan van Breughel nodded, then poked Nephi between the ribs. "I was only joking," he said, then turned back to Sonak. "Once your crew arrives, I shall await them in the gardens. I will have cooky start up the barbeque. I take it that you will still stick to tofu?"
Again Sonak nodded, and turned back to Nephi. "Please excuse my grandfather, he has always been a pranker. As to the reason why you are here, we are having a senior staff barbeque. Surely you do not object to that?"

Nephi was rather surprised by her question. She didn't know his culture well, so he let that go. "My dear Commodore, asking whether an Inuit objects to being offered meat is like asking a Vulcan if they mind having to think logically," he said and chuckled.
He looked ahead to see the back of her grandfather, headed towards the kitchen apparently. "I don't mind him at all. When I was a boy, our Village Elder teased me significantly."
He looked down at the slightly wrinkled uniform, and then at the Commodore's choice of clothing. "Computer, arch." And the archway appeared. He went over to the console on its side. "Computer, my personal file, authorization Jacobson Gamma Tau Seven."
=/\= File accessed =/\=
"Load appearance 4-Alpha," he said, and his clothing changed. He appeared in light brown leather for his shirt, pants and thick moccasins. "Not exactly tradition Inuit clothing, but our common dress is best suited for very cold wear. Now, to the food," he said, motioning in the direction he had seen her grandfather head off in, and started to head that direction.

"... so don't ask me how long it's going to last." L'Ola smiled and continued, "Now don't forget I still have to see that doctor of yours. Ask him when would be a good time, although obviously not straight away. And please try to stay out of trouble. You know where I am if you need anything. Computer, end recording and transmit to Lucy Kanz on Starbase Bellicose."
Satisfied that she had done everything within her power, L'Ola headed to the holodeck. She arrived bang on time, which she was pleased about. Timekeeping hadn't been her specialty lately, and as a result she seemed to be permanently overcompensating by arriving early. But she was almost excited at the prospect of holodeck time.
Any positive feelings vanished the second that the doors opened. *Well this certainly brings back memories* she said to herself. Sonak had quite clearly noticed her reaction, so L'Ola tried to relax, at least on the outside. Of course, on the inside she was playing through scenes that had forced their way to the surface of her mind.
She was more than happy to change out of her uniform at Sonak's suggestion, the whole red thing still felt a little weird. And once she was wearing her favourite cropped jeans and t-shirt she was a little more like herself.
Since her quarters were closer to the holodeck, L'Ola returned before Sonak did. She took the opportunity to have a walk around the grounds. The sunny weather and happy atmosphere made them look different to how she'd remembered.
By the time she'd got back to the front of the house she saw the others talking, from what she could tell about height. She slowed down a little and stayed out of view. While Sonak and Nephi were about the same height, L'Ola was a good 5 inches shorter than the pair of them.
Once she saw the conversation end, she half-ran over to Sonak, "I can't believe being in an outdoors environment still makes me energetic."
"Apparently it has the same effect on my children" came the reply.
L'Ola checked the time, "Now where has everyone else got to?"

Nephi continued on through the house, in the direction he had seen Mr Van Breughel head off to. It was an expansive house. On the far end of rather large rooms he could yet more large rooms. He had passed beneath the balcony of an impressive grand staircase. He saw yet other staircases lead up into the upper floors of the house, including from the kitchen. This house must have been centuries old.
As he neared the rear of the house, through a expansive window he saw Mr Van Breughel out in the garden, looking around admiring his land. Nephi decided to sneak up on the old man, and went into stalking mode. This was quite easy, as tile floors didnt not crouch and squeak when walked on like the snows of the Arctic would, and the leather of his shoes also helped.
He stepped outside, and walked cautiously and quietly up behind the old man, perfectly silent. He then stepped right up beside him.
Jonathan looked up, surprised at his sudden appearance. "My goodness, boy. Where did you come from? I didn't even hear you coming!"
Nephi chuckled. "Indeed. That was the idea, sir."
Jonathan looked him up and down. "You look like some kind of Indian, dressed like that. That's assuming of course that you're human."
Nephi nodded. "Indeed I am human. And you are close on my being an Indian. I am an Inuit, sir. What you would call an Eskimo."
"Don't your kind usually have longer hair than that? I've seen Eskimo men with hair down to their waists!" he exclaimed, as if it were shocking.
Nephi again nodded. "Yes, sir. We indeed normally do. However, I have to keep my hair short to conform with Starfleet grooming standards. Also because long hair gets in the way when I'm crawling around the bowels of the ship fixing things."
"No need to call me sir, lad. I'm not your superior like my granddaughter. Call me Jonathan. And how long have you been Chief Engineer?" he asked, cheerfully.
"Only a couple of months. I was asked to take the position by the Commodore herself, after Commander Martens was promoted to First Officer. I jumped at the opportunity. Not only is it a terrifically advanced ship, but also a fine crew," he said proudly of his shipmates.
"Indeed. You have my granddaughter to thank for that. Now, I hope you've brought an appetite. We've got plenty of food being prepared, and I've got the finest cook you've ever seen," he said, his eyes shining.
"Jonathan," Nephi said, slapping his hands on his stomach, "I'm a big walking stomach, particularly when it comes to meat."

Jonathan smiled at the Inuit officer. "Good, because I don't want to be left with all this meat," he said, then laughed.
Soon they were joined by Sonak, who was pulling along a tall blonde male with a young child on his arm. "Nathan!" Jonathan exclaimed, then gazed at the youngester. "Your son?" he querried.
Nathan nodded. "Yes this would be my son FrΓ©dΓ©ric," he said, as he set his son down. "Freddy, why don't you say hello to your great grandfather?"
The boy shyly looked up at the old man. "Hello," he said, but the sound he made was barely a whisper.
Nathan laughed and gave his son a friendly pat on his behind. "Go on, go play with your cousins."
Freddy squealed and ran off.
Nathan smiled at his sister, then at the Inuit officer. "Why hello, I don't think we've met yet. I'm Doctor Nathan van Breughel." He held out his hand in greeting. "It's good to see more of my sister's friends. I didn't get the chance to meet everyone at the wedding."
Sonak prodded her brother between his ribs. "Surely you have met Nephi Jacobson?" she said, mock insulted, "he is the one who now keeps the ship in one piece."
<Jacobson>
She peered in the distance as she noticed a figure approaching. She smiled, as she knew who. "L'Ola!" Sonak called, beckoning her new first officer over. She then pointed at the figure in the distance.
When the figure came closer, the little group recognized the person as Commander Nick Martens. "Hello there!" he called, as he came closer.
<Kanz>
"Please excuse me," Sonak said, "I hear the voices of Fox and Daniel. I will have to guide them over here." She walked off to the front of the mansion and waved both Fox and Daniel over. She didn't miss the pained expression on Fox' face, and the questioning look on Daniel's.
"This is a long story Daniel," Sonak said, using his first name for the first time, "one I shall be happy to tell you. Right now, however I want you to meet my grandfather." She guided the counselor, and her navigator, towards the other side of the mansion.
"Grandfather, you would remember Mr Fox?" she enquired, then gently shoved Daniel forward. "This is my new counselor, Daniel McVaye."
Jonathan looked him over. "A male counselor?"
Sonak nodded. "Yes, unfortunately Claire and her new wife Lena moved to Earth, where Claire opened up a private practice. I assure you, Daniel has made quite an impression. For a mere male, he is very good at his job." She winked at Daniel.
<McVaye/Fox>

"Surely you have met Nephi Jacobson?" she said to her brother, feigning insult, "he is the one who now keeps the ship in one piece."
"Indeed, and your sister is the still the one that keeps splitting up into three pieces, though it's designed to do that, and keeps undertaking tasks which cause to blow into many more pieces than that, which it is of course not supposed to do," he said, and chuckled.
"But anyway, I'm not surprised you don't remember me. I had only been on the ship a short time, and was not very prominent at the reception, keeping off to the side," Nephi pointed out. He saw someone come up to them, and was surprised to see Commander Martens.
"Commander! Good to see you again. Not exactly someone I expected to see here," Nephi said, cheerfully.

L'Ola turned round and did a double-take as she saw Nick walking over. She went over so that he would reach her before the others.
"Care to tell me what's going on?" She whispered.
"What do you mean?"
"Well why are you here?" L'Ola was going to expand her question a little, but would definitely have been heard by everyone.
As they joined the group Nephi expressed his surprise at seeing Nick there. He got a laugh in reply, "I guess you never know who you'll run into."
L'Ola glared at Nick and motioned for him to move a little away from the group. Once she was happy they were out of hearing range, she turned to face him, "This had better be good."
"What do you mean?"
"Okay, I just have a couple of questions. Three actually. Who made you? Does Nick know you're here? And why are you here?"

Nick Martens merely smiled at her. "Yes he does know, and he himself added my program to this program, with permission of the commodore of course."
The holographic image of Nick Martens offered the new first officer his arm. "Please attend me," he said, while continuing to smile, "after all this little party is in your honour. It wouldn't do for me not to be here, and a hologram was the best I could do. The real Nick was informed of who his replacement was going to be, so he arranged with the commodore to add a this addition to her regular home program. She can add and remove it at will, depending on who will join her in this program."
He leaned over to kiss her gently. "It is me, just holographic." Slowly, he led her back to the group of officers. He smiled at Nephi, who earlier had exclaimed something.
"I am not really here," he announced, "but a party is no party if the crew would not be complete." He waved his hand and suddenly an image of Meylor Paht also appeared, as well as former counselor Claire Steenbergen and her wife Lena. "Now, we are complete," he announced, and reached for a glass of champagne, raising it in a toast. "To the new first officer!"
Sonak raised her own glass in response. "And cameraderie," she added, then sipped her drink."

The next day Fox got up at 05:30 hours, still a bit tired cause it had become late last night. He had gone out with Wendy. A smile appeared on his face thinking back at it. "It was so much fun." he thought.
He walked to the bathroom and took a shower, after which he dried himself off and put his uniform on. "Computer, what is the time?" he asked. "06:00 hours." it replied.
"Still have some time." Fox thought, walked to to replicator. "A cup of strong coffee and some toast with cheese." he said. His order materialized, he took it, walked to a chair and sat down. enjoying his breakfast.
At 06:30 he left the quarters and went to Dock 2. At 06:45 he arrived there. When he entered he saw his instructor already waiting for him near a shuttle.
"Ah Mr. Fox, welcome." the instructor said "Shall we enter and start the course?"
Fox nodded and both men went in the shuttle. Fox took the seat behind the nagivation console, the instructor sat down in the chair next to him."
Fox hailed the 'Air control' of Bellicose, requesting permission to take off. Not much later he got the reply he could. He started the engines and slowly the shuttle took off leaving the starbase at 1/4 impulse speed.
<After a whole morning of flying> "Set course again for bellicose, Commander" the instructor said. "Alright." Fox replied and tabbed a few buttons on his console. Not much later Bellicose came in visual range again.
"Fox to Bellicose air control, requesting permission to dock." he said "Request granted." came the reply "Dock 3 is clear." "Acknowledged." Fox replied and closed the channel. He pilotted the shuttle to the dock and put it down.
"That will be all for today, Commander." the instructor said as both men left the shuttle. "In two days we'll continue, lets say.. Same time?" Fox nodded in reply. "Thats fine to me." They shook hands and Fox left the dock.
On his way to Wendy's quarters, almost being there he got sonaks call. "This is commodore Sonak, all senior staff report to holodeck two in thirty minutes,"
He entered her quarters, but didnt find her there. "She must be on duty. He thought. He walked to the bedroom and picked up a case. He quickly changed into something casual and left the quarters again, going back to the dock where he had docked the Vesuvius.
25 minutes later he entered through the doors of holodeck two together with McVaye who had arrived there at the same time as his did. Once in he looked at a very familiar sight and got reminded of a past adventure here, something he'd rather forget.
After a little while they saw Sonak walking to them, she guided both, towards the other side of the mansion.
Jonathan nodded streched out his hand, Fox did as well and shook his hand. "Good to see you again, Fox" Jonathan said. Fox nodded. "Yes, nice to be here." he replied.
Then Sonak introduced McVaye to Jonathan.

Nephi was surprised to find out that Nick was a hologram, and even more surprised to see Meylor appear, then someone he didnt know.
He reached near his belt and pulled up. His tricorder reappeared from his uniform belt, hidden by the hologram of his current outfit. He scanned Nick, and the others. "Yes, indeed I see you are holograms. And rather sophisticated ones as well," he said, closing the tricorder. He pushed it back into his side, and it disappeared again. "And by the way, Nick, you're leaving opened a Command spot for me. So thats for that!" he said, grinning.
He looked over at the unfamiliar figures, then walked over. "Greetings. Based on the running pattern here, you must be former Vesuvius crewmembers, and from before I came aboard. I'm Nephi Jacobson, the recently-appointed Chief Engineer."
