At long last the words they had been waiting for were spoken. "This is it for today," T'Len spoke, "tomorrow we will examine the tissues we have enclosed today. The laboratory technicians will process them for you." The Vulcan professor noticed that two cadets in particular were the first to leave, which she found somewhat odd as they had been the most attentive students she'd had so far. Also, they seemed far more experienced than their appearance let on. ~I must keep an eye on them~ T'Len thought as she packed up and made the corpse presentable again to the next of kin.
Tomorrow would be interesting and she would see who had the most talent to be a surgeon and a pathologist. Though she was Vulcan, T'Len took pride in her profession and her personal knowledge on the subject.
Meanwhile, Sonak and Marco hurried from the medical building. "I will meet you for breakfast tomorrow, before we go to the lab," she suggested, then nodded towards the flyer in his hand. "Perhaps you should sign up, it is unknown how long it will be before we find our dissident. Have you any thoughts about Professor T'Len? Could she be our dissident?"
(Marco)
Sonak nodded. "Please excuse me. Logan has promised to meet me for dinner." She offered the young doctor a small smile. "He still owes me a dinner, he is very persistent on doing this. And doctor, I would like you to do something for me. Since we are out of time I am experiencing a certain unrest. Tovan has been able to put some ease to my mind, but perhaps, as my doctor, you could see to it that I will refrain from doing anything...illogical?"
(Marco)
"Very well, I will meet you tomorrow at 0700 at the dorm mess hall. Good night doctor." Sonak hurried away from him, hoping Logan wouldn't feel he had been stood up as she was horribly late.
(Logan)
~~~ Much later ~~~
After her dinner engagement with Logan, Sonak finally made her way to bed. She was sharing a room with L'Ola as they were the only female members of their group and she found L'Ola lying on her bed, engrossed in a book. "Had a good evening L'Ola?" she querried politely, while she undressed and pulled on her sleeping shirt.
(L'Ola)
"I had a very...curious afternoon. Interesting as well, especially Professor Quinn's lecture about ethics. We have him again tomorrow afternoon. However I am very tired now and must rest. Sleep well."
(L'Ola)
The Vulcan lay back on her bed and closed her eyes; her breath evened out as she gradually fell asleep.
Fourth Year Cadet Sonak van Breughel walked through the long corridor of her dorm, towards the stairs that would lead down to the main hall of the building. There, her study group would be waiting for her as they had planned a field trip away from the Academy grounds for their science project.
She had been looking forward to this trip with her group as they were a very tight group, taking their friendship to new levels with each project. They gained high marks usually on their efficiency and ingenuity, much to the chagrin of other students. Only last week, Cadet Mandy Veolia was abused by a group of male cadets simply because she was the brightest of her workgroup where engineering was concerned.
Their group was diverse to say the least, consisting of a Vulcan, two Humans, a Klingon, a Tellarite, an Andorian and a Bolian. And each had their own style on doing things, where debates could come close to heated arguments.
Now, Sonak was looking forward to their field trip into the Rocky Mountains. She hoisted her backpack higher on her shoulders and approached the stairs when she was suddenly surrounded by three female fourth-year cadets. Head held high, she faced them with a certain amount of defiance, daring them to taunt them. She was used to that by now, the taunting and she usually managed to ignore it.
"Where are you headed Vulcan," the tallest with short cropped blonde curls sneered, "going away again?" She yanked the backpack from Sonak's shoulders and tore it open. "Let's see what we've got here." Sonak tried to take her pack back but she was held firm by the other two girls.
"That is private," Sonak said calmly, holding out her hand towards her pack, "please give it back."
In her sleep, Sonak moaned softly on the memory and tossed and turned in her bed.
The blonde held the pack out of her reach, while upturning it on the floor. Provisions went rolling down the steps, coming to rest halfway down the stairs. Fighting her anger, Sonak was determined to get her pack back and head out with her friends. "Give me that," she snapped, lunging for her pack.
The girls seemed to have anticipated that and gave her a firm shove in the opposite direction. Arms flailing, the Vulcan lost her balance and fell down the stairs with a scream. Remembering her survival training, Sonak managed to turn her fall into an unelegant roll down the stairs. She felt bones shap as she rolled down the marble stairs. Then everything went back.
When she woke up, her surroundings were all dark and she could sense that the room she was in was small. Feeling her way, she winced against the broken bones, fighting her panic against being in a confined space.
With a scream that could be heard two rooms away, Sonak woke up and bolted upright, hyperventillating and her shirt drenched with sweat. She felt arms circle around her, in odd comfort. Slowly, she regained control over her breathing.
As Byrne sat in class, he kept thinking to himself that most of the theories were so old school. Tapping his desk, he started mind wandering about the time skip. Trying to read the face of his professor, he just felt so under classed in this lecture. Absently, he started doodling some new ideas he had for the upgrades for the newly refitted Vesuvius. Accidentally dropping his stylus, he caught the attention of the instructor.
Sliding his PADD under his arm, he attempted to look away to avoid the instructor to see what he was working on, especially since it was 15 years ahead of it's time. As the instructor pulled up the next slide of warp theory, she slided up behind him and nudged his arm causing him to drop the PADD. Picking it up, Logan quickly jumped up and stated, "Professor Strofik, I am sorry to have been slacking in my attention, but a fellow cadet gave me an idea about the concept if the Federation ever made ships with multiple sections and the mechanics of how they would work with modern warp practice.
As he stood there, he felt singled out and the only thought going thru his head was that Commodore Sonak would tear him apart if he was accidentally providing information about future warp travel. As the Professor glanced at the PADD, she started, "Mr. ...., what is your name cadet? I think you might have something here, but your practice is over-rated, if you would like to possibly explain your theory on the board, I think the rest of the class, might enjoy what it is like to over think things in warp theory."
"Cadet Byrne, mam. No disrespect intended, but I created this for my own fancy, not to be possibly intended to be presented as a class project. Although, if you wish, I would extend this PADD for you to maybe use as a possible scenario for what could be called a multiple vector assault mode", quickly replied Logan, as he sat down.
Holding his head low, he quickly sat down and followed the class plan, praying that this infraction didn't possibly cause more problems. As the class ended, he was about to jet out of the room, when the professor called him to her desk.
"Mr. Byrne was it? I have to ask you, whatever did you use to create this motion within warp for the 3 part vessel and what did you use as a model?", asked Professor Strofik. " I have only heard about a multiple vessel separation twice and since you couldn't know that much about the Prometheus in the Academy, I think you have some things to explain."
Scratching his left arm, Logan tried to quickly come up with a lame scenario to fool the professor into thinking he was just screwing around with equations, instead of him really knowing what this all meant. Asking to be dismissed, he hurried to the lobby area to meet with L'Ola. Stammering, he tried to tell her about the situation in the Warp Lab.
Checking the class schedules, he realized that Sonak wouldn't be available for at least an hour. Heading to the Computer building, Logan was able to convince the lower ranking cadet to allow him some time within the holo-chambers for his dinner with Sonak.
Using the main communication board, Logan left a post-note for her to join him at 18:00 hours in Holo-chamber 16 for dinner and a date. As it came upon 18:32, Logan sent the cadet on a mission to locate the where-abouts of D'Angelo, as not to find him and Sonak together. Once the cadet left, he finally saw her coming down the hallway, gleaming he quickly primped his uniform, and steadied himself.
Slightly bowing down, he swung an arm to show her the way to the dinner awaiting. As Sonak entered the chamber, she was taken back by the detail that Logan had taken to present her with a dinner that a Vulcan would not attempt to insult. Reaching forward, he set her chair and allowed her to compose herself.
"How did you..., never mind, I can assume that you researched this", stated Sonak as she felt the room temperature and setting of the table. Looking down at the vegetarian layout of her plate, she gave a slight smile and glanced at the Commander showing her appreciation. Although, something seemed odd, it seemed that her plate was of both cultures. Vulcan and human. Lifting her fork questioning, she produced a small sprig of a vegetable and asked," I am to assume this is something YOU like? And what do you call it?", she asked. "Asparagus", he said."Try it, I know the ears are sensitive, and guessing the taste buds are as well", he said snickering.
As the meal came to a close, Logan commanded the computer to remove the table and dinnerware and replace it with a small dance floor. "Computer, soft dance music, please?", he commanded. Reaching out his hand, he saw her body kind of fold into it's self. "Ms. Sonak,may I please have this dance? I will not bite, but I know I will NEVER have this chance again", said Byrne.
Rising, she cautiously took Logan's hand. "Commander, I will tell you this, during this time, I will assume the moment, but do not allow yourself to feel past this. I am paired with Jatan, that union cannot be broken and is missed. As you are aware. But I have to admit, your attempt, although sweet by human standards, will only award you this....." She then leaned forward and kissed him on the lips. " Thank you for the moment, and yes, this will be the only chance you have had", she stated as she promptly turned and left for her quarters for the night.
OOC: This post is meant to be a completely aside from the main story.
Sonak and L'Ola stood on the promenade which the schools cafeteria and some shops for trinkets and things. The two just stood there surveying the crowd, learning and watching, to get a sense of the tasks ahead of them.
"I swear I don't remember it being so busy down here," L'Ola lamented.
"Indeed it does seem a little busier than I too remember," Sonak replied.
At one table sat some cadets playing an alien game which involved a stone game board and miniature Trolls and Dwarves. The game looked familiar to L'Ola but for the life of her she couldn't recall it's name. Each of the players sat there with a silent resolve trying to guess the next players move.
Sonak gazed from the game to a couple cadets talking to a professor. She didn't think much of the scene, many of the profs mingled with the students so they could better know their students. Only this professor looked slightly familiar. Maybe it was they way her hair fell on her shoulders, maybe it was her shoulders. The mannerisms were familiar and the way she leaned to one side, slightly sticking her hip out.
The professor nodded in thanks to the students as they gave her a padd. She then turned and began to leave. Sonaks eyes widened, she tugged on L'Olas' sleeve.
"Huh?" she said being pulled out of the daze that had come over her from watching the board game.
"Look," Sonak said soft yet intently. She motioned casually towards the professor.
"Umm no, not really," L'Ola replied looking at the dark haired individual.
"Keep looking," came the blunt reply. The professor was now walking towards them, not intentionally but because it was where she needed to go. L'Ola stared but for the life of her couldn't make heads nor tails of who this woman was.
"Excuse me Professor?" Sonak said leaning into the path of the distracted prof.
"Yes Cadet ummm.."
"Sonak ma'am," Sonak replied.
"Sonak right. Are you in one of my classes?" She asked. The voice was there too. It had to be her. L'Ola looked from the professor to Sonak and back in confusion.
"I am not sure which class it is exactly that you teach," came the blunt reply.
"Oh well I'm relatively new to the faculty. I'm the instructor of advanced battle tactics," the professor looked proud of her title. Indeed she should, she was maniacal after all.
L'Ola looked on in stunned silence. Was it possible? How? The woman looked at L'Ola and smiled, that confirmed it for her.
Sonak was visibly restraining herself from strangling the woman before them. Her hands were shaking ever so slightly, the professor didn't seem to notice, as many a cadet had done that before her.
"Ah and here's my husband. He's one of the instructors for the Tactical and Security training course."
The color drained from L'Olas face. A man had just arrived and put his arm around the professor.
"Commander," Sonak said with a nod. The man smiled and extended a hand. She took it and gave a warm shake.
"Nick Martinez, nice to meet you. This is my wife Kate."
"I was just telling them about the course I've started teaching this year," Kate said looking back at Nick. He smiled and whispered something in her ear to which she nodded.
"We must be going. There is a previous engagement we need to attend to. Nice meeting you cadets. I hope to see you around," Kate said and smiled. The two nodded and Nick and Kate moved off and disappeared into the crowd.
Sonak looked at L'Ola and L'Ola looked at Sonak. The two stared at each other. Sonak raised an eyebrow, as did L'Ola. The world around them continued to go on as the two cadets stood there stunned.
"That was odd," Sonak said.
"You're telling me," L'Ola replied, "He hasn't aged a bit."
"Indeed. I wonder what they are up to."
"I don't know if I want to know. I like plausible deny ability. If I don't see it, then I don't have to be responsible for it," L'Ola said, she took a sip of a drink she'd been holding in her right hand.
"Let us just move on with our mission shall we?" Sonak asked.
"Yes, lets," L'Ola agreed. She let out a giggle and the two continued watching the crowd.
After the little science experiment with Robert and L'Ola, L'Ola headed to the promenade. Fox looked at his schedule to see when his next class would start. "In 5 minutes!" he shouted almost. Before he dashed off to his class he looked at Robert "19:00 hours in the holosuits?" referring to a game of Racquetball the two had been talking about during the experiment. Robert nodded in acknoledgement and Fox ran off.
A minute before the Professor started his lecture Fox opened the door of the class-room and walked in. "Ah glad you could join us, Cadet." he stated "Please take a seat." only a few seats in the front row were still empty. Fox walked to one and sat down. Quickly looking at his schedule again which subject this class was about again. "Ah Temporal Mechanics, what a coincidence." Fox thought and looked up again, listening to the professor.
After 20 minutes the professor stopped with his lecture. "For next week i want you all to write a short essay about a temporal anomaly. The remaining time of this class you can spend in the library to do some research about the anomaly you're going to pick." All cadets nodded, stood up from their chairs and walked to the door.
As Fox walked to the library he thought "An essay..... I hate writing essay's." Not paying much attention to things around him. "What to pick?" he kept thinking. "And i have to be carefull not to draw from experiences too much."
"She could be the dissident... but then again, she seemed like she was in the right time. "I doubt it... but then again, when have I ever been right lately?"
The first year cadet immediately regretted his tone. His reference to his recent problems on the Vesuvius was probably not wise. Sonak ignored it, moving on, telling Marco to meet her for breakfast.
The hair on the back of Marco's neck stood on end. He had promised himself he wasn't going to get involved, and he intended to keep that promise. If not for his own sake, for Jatan's sake. -- but, Sonak was already too far away for D'Angelo to discretely decline, and there was still a chance that it was legitimately a plea for help with her emotional side. After all, her physiology was that of a Cadet... her emotions were probably running wild in ways that she currently was not used to dealing with.
The next morning didn't fair any better. The Vulcan was late to meeting Marco, and they had to forgo their morning meeting to make their class schedule. Sonak seemed more agitated than usual, and upon asking, Marco received the whole Nick and Kate story.
"Who is Kate?" The name 'Nick Martens' was a very familiar name. It was the name of the First Officer of the Vesuvius, Marco knew, but he had yet to formally meet him. He was on a special assignment the last Marco had heard... and that was only after he tried to find him for a routine medical exam. The name Kate, on the other hand, was not one he did not remember until Reckus- who insisted she be called Van Breugel - reminded him of the deceased wife of the First Officer.
"I guess she isn't deceased here." Marco said; an obvious statement.
"Do you know where the nearest public computer console is? I have no idea how to get back to Professor Quinn's classroom." Marco was looking more forward to training on ethics over listening to a pining Vulcan, who, at the moment, was picking a tulip- ignoring the sign specifically saying not to.
"Are you coming?" the doctor said, clearly annoyed with his commanding officer. "I really don't want to be lectured on the finer points of punctuality"
Miss Van Breugel gently set down her flowery stem, and snapped into gear.
"Coming."
Trey a Kelly entered the holo-deck. He made is way to the console on the wall and keyed in a few commands. Within a few seconds the bridge of an excelsior class star ship materialized along with its bot crew
“Computer run kobayashi maru program”
“Sir we have an incoming message… it seems to be a distress call” said one of the bot crew members.
“Put it on speakers”
“This is Captain Wilson of the cargo ship Yutomo we have…..neutral zone and are…...life support is down by 75%..... Last. could any one….”
“Sir we lost the signal”
“Is there any way to get it back?”
“No sir, the signal’s too weak”
“So what are we going to do?” asked Kelly
“Do you even have to ask… you know we obligated to give assistance”
“I know that, but am sure I heard neutral zone some where in that transmission.”
“Yeah I heard it to but that’s not going to stop me, helms man set curse for the neutral zone.”
“Aye sir”
And with that the stars turned into star lines and they were on there way. It didn’t take them long to there target “Sir Scans are picking up weapons fire, about two and a half light years into the neutral zone”
“Let me guess the Romulans right?”
“Aye sir”
“All hands this is your captain prepare for battle, helms man set an intercept course, shields up and weapons at the ready.”
Sonak thoroughly enjoyed her evening with Logan and felt very flattered about the care he had taken to make her feel at ease. He was also being the perfect gentleman and even though she recognized and acknowledged the romantic undertone, she did appreciate the fact that he kept his distance. She knew he would want more if times were different, and indeed times were different, but there would always be Jatan. No matter what the situation, in their own time she was a married woman and a mother of five.
She saw his eyes widen in surprise when she kissed him good night. "This will be all you have," she told him as she caressed his cheek, "good night Logan." Yet, as she walked away she felt as if she had done something terrible, and had hurt Logan's feelings. She felt odd, and strangely uncomfortable but she put it on the temporal displacement, rather than the actual feeling, which she couldn't place to begin with.
The next morning, she met up with L'Ola, who surprisingly didn't comment any further on the nightmare her commanding officer had experienced during the night. It was as though it was an event so private, it wouldn't need further discussion. Yet Sonak felt apprehensive ever since waking up, and her confusion was only added to when the two women saw two instructors whom they indeed knew very well. Except the two didn't seem to recognize them.
Fury boiled up within her as she restrained herself on the urge of just strangling Kate; the woman responsible for a lot of grief in her life. She felt L'Ola's restraining hand on her arm and she remained polite towards the damning woman. When they finally left, Sonak realised she was late for her breakfast meeting with D'Angelo.
Feeling even more depressed, she hurried along the complex to meet up with him, but there was no more time for breakfast. Instead, she followed him quietly towards the classroom, where Quinn was already present and casting them a rather disapproving stare. However, as they were on time, no comment was made.
"I must apologize," Sonak whispered to the doctor, "I had a rather disquieting dream last night. I will tell you about it over lunch, and then you can explain to me what it means." In the mean time, she stared ahead absentmindedly, nowhere near a mood to discuss ethics with Quinn like she had before. In fact, she sat frozen in horror when two girls, matching the description of the girls from her dream, entered the room right after the rest of her usual senior staff joined them for class.
"Impossible," she whispered as colour drained from her face.
"What's impossible?" Marco whispered, but not quietly enough, as Doctor Quinn spun around, glasses fleeing to the furthest stretches of his nose, defying physics as they clung to the tip during the spin. Apparently Marco hadn't spoke quietly enough.
However, not knowing who did the speaking, he gave only a disapproving grimace, and returned to his lecture. Sonak motioned for Marco to be quiet- but completely understanding his disposition. After the way she reacted, Marco was dying to get a glimpse into the Vulcan's thoughts... but not at the expense of getting lectured on ethics yet again.
The taller of the girls was darn cute; with short curly blonde hair... and Marco made a move to go sit by her, when Sonak put her hand on his shoulder, and with Vulcan strength, forced the doctor back down into his desk chair. If only Sonak had told Marco her dream prior to class, he would have understood the Commodore's actions. As of right now, he was miff.
"Oh sure, she gets to have fun with whomever, but servant Marco was always expected to be on official business." Just for this, Marco thought, "I will be making a formal report when I... if I ... return to the Vesuvius. And I will leave out nothing." He feigned a polite smile to the Commodore while his thoughts traveled in the other direction.
Indignant, Marco listened as Quinn lectured the newcomers on the finer points of punctuality and truancy in an ethical schooling environment. Their physical attributes, however, were more than enough to save them from the usual knee-jerk expulsion the pointy nosed professor readily administered, and the one-sided tirade ended as soon as it began.
Watching the little love tap from Sonak to D'Angelo, Logan sat just out of her reach, in case some of her Vulcan anger was catching. Tapping his lapel, he drowned himself with the droning of Professor Quinn as he rambled on about hi course theory. Reaching for his PADD an putting it into mute mode, he started inputting all of the data from the information he gathered from the other cadets about the possible canidates for the sabatour.
Feeling a menacing glare from the Commodore, he palmed it back into his pocket. As they sat there, he almost smiled watching D'Angelo squirm as L'Ola passed him a note about what proceeded last nite in their quarters. Stunned, he almost created a small scene to disrupt the professor. Holding back, he composed himself and eased himself down next to Sonak.
Reaching for her hand, he felt every muscle in her body tense up. Holding back, he just glanced her shoulder in an understanding motion. Turning back to his PADD, he realized that something was amiss with the Warp Theory professor.
Cathching Professor Quinn's attention, Byrne quietly stood up and requested a personal leave for the moment from class. (Potty break! ;D) Leaving he rushed to the Warp Lab to find Fox to sort out the information he gathered, knowing he could always trust his keen eyes to assist him. (TAG Fox)
Annoyed at both her senior officers, Sonak made a point of ignoring them both whenever she could. If they did catch her attention, she cast them a menacing glare before fixing her gaze on the professor again. On the other end of Logan sat L'Ola and the Vulcan could just sense her boredom. Tovan sat on the row before them, eagerly absorbing Quinn's lecture. Fox however was not at the lecture and Sonak would have a stern talking to with him later on, of that she was certain. Trey too had failed to attend, even though she had spotted him entering the room earlier.
Logan suddenly departed with a sudden haste, only to return about fifteen minutes later, looking troubled but relieved all the same. Sonak had caught his whisper about visiting a little room, though at the time she hadn't comprehended the reference. Seeing his relieved look, she now understood the reference and cast him a small smile.
When Quinn finally dismissed them, Sonak was the first to leave the room, bodily dragging D'Angelo with her as they passed Logan and L'Ola. Quinn on the other hand didn't fail to notice the abrupt departure of his two keenest students and knew instantly something was amiss. (Quinn)
"What was that all about," the Vulcan hissed at the young human, her eyes blazing with fury as she regarded him. "You are not reporting anything ensign," she continued, "for we are not yet done with this mission. You have yet to answer me on my suspicion of Professor T'Len. Speaking of which, we have class soon after lunch, I will meet you at the medical building then." She shoved D'Angelo away from her and turned to a stunned Logan and L'Ola. "Logan, please take the good doctor for lunch. I will speak with you tonight, there is something I wish to discuss with you and Marco both."
Then she nodded towards L'Ola. "Commander please walk with me."
L'Ola nodded and followed her commanding officer with a concerned frown on her face. She had noticed her friend had been acting irrationally, and even more so when two complete strangers had entered the classroom. Being a telepath, she hadn't missed the other woman's sudden distress, and also sensed it had to do with the event in the dorm the evening before.
The two women departed, leaving the two male officers behind to fend for themselves. "Have you any suspicions towards any of your professors?" Sonak asked when they were well away from the buildings, standing on the edge of one of the academy's small forest grounds.
L'Ola nodded quietly as she sat down on a tree trunk. "My science professor acted rather strangely when I pointed out a few inconsistencies in his lecture," she answered, her frown deepening, "but nothing out of the ordinary."
Sonak nodded in return, leaning against another tree. "This mission is most disquieting," she explained, "we have no information on this rebel, we have not been given a description of him or her. We have been thrown in at the deep end and I feel as though someone is trying to make an example out of us." She gazed past her friend and spotted a lovely yellow flower on one of the tree branches, then walked towards it to examine it.
She turned when she heard sounds behind her and saw L'Ola struggle with four masked men. One of them clasped a white cloth over her nose and mouth but she managed to fight that one off. "Hey!" Sonak shouted, as she ran to the aid of her friend, "leave her alone!" At that moment a second clubbed the security chief over the head, then at the same time as his four companions leveled a phaser at the charging Vulcan.
"She's mad," one of them called out as he dodged her swing as she charged on after his phaser beam struck her full in the chest. All four discharged their phaser and this time the Vulcan collapsed. "Damn, you were supposed to keep your weapon at stun Dimitri!" the same person called out, as he rolled her over, "that fine beam has hurt her. Nobody was supposed to get hurt!"
The one called Dimitri shrugged. "I was told to keep it on fine beam just in case. The stun you issued her didn't drop her now did it. Too bad she's hurt and bleeding, but she should've been smarter than that. Now, pick up the other one, tie her up, gag her and bring her along." Dimitri pointed his phaser at the Vulcan. "Leave her, she won't recognize us. If we take her she might compromise our mission. Let's go!"
They picked up L'Ola, leaving Sonak behind, lying partially obscured by the treestump and the high grass. Though the one who had first tried to stun her did the humane thing and called in an emergency to the academy. "Hurry!" Dimitri called to him, then all four disappeared into thin air, carrying their captive with them.
OOC A little back-posting for catch up
IC After leaving Sonak to her medical class, Tovan attended a few more classes. Most weren’t in his assigned area of study, but it was all the better to investigate the maximum number of professors. Unfortunately, nobody seemed at all out of the ordinary. They were, of course, professors, so they had their little quirks, but most seemed to act in keeping with the time period. He continued to harbor doubts about some of the groundskeepers, but he spotted no sign of any of them that day, not even the old Boothby. As night rolled around, Tovan returned to his quarters to meditate.
Tovan was still uneasy after the mind meld with Sonak. He had generally avoided melds in the past because they had a tendency to upset one’s emotional balance. This time was no different. But, rather than subsiding, the imbalance seemed to be growing. Tovan had sensed Sonak’s connection to her bondmate. Tovan, like most Vulcans, had once had a bondmate, but the connection was severed as part of the Kohlinahr discipline. Sonak’s feelings had reminded Tovan of his own severing, a vaguely traumatic experience. But, it was more than that. There was something else going on, something Tovan couldn’t quite put his finger on… Meditation would help, he thought. Unfortunately, no matter what he tried, he found himself unable to meditate that night. His disquiet only increased, Tovan departed for Professor Quinn’s class.
In class, Tovan noticed Sonak still seemed agitated, especially when two female cadets walked in. Tovan ignored it, taking in the lecture, and attempting to regain control of himself. After the lecture, Sonak stormed out with Marco and L’Ola. Tovan went his own way. He intended to find Boothby and interview him, possibly determining if one of his groundskeeper was behaving out the ordinary. Suddenly, he heard several phaser blasts coming from a few buildings away. He leapt into action, quickly heading towards the scene. He arrived to find Sonak bleeding on the grass, barely conscious and a medical team quickly running up.
“L’Ola, they took her,” she gasped.
“Try not too speak,” Tovan said, recalling his first-aid training.
“What happened?” the chief doctor asked.
“I don’t know, I heard phaser fire and came running. She’s my work group leader,” Tovan replied. “Is she going to be alright?”
“I need to get her to the infirmary to stabilize her, we’ll know more then.”
The orderlies put Sonak on a stretcher and hurried off. As Tovan followed he tapped his combadge. =/\=Tovan to workgroup. Cadet Sonak has been injured by a phaser, and L’Ola is missing. Meet me in the infirmary immediately=/\= (Everyone)
Leaving he rushed to the Warp Lab to find Fox to sort out the information he gathered, knowing he could always trust his keen eyes to assist him. Fox quickly turned around when he heard the doors of the warp lab open and saw Logan was walking in. "Didn't you have an ethics class to attend." he asked Logan. Who nodded, giving Fox a padd in the mean time. "And if i'm correct so had you." Logan answered. "Sonak didn't look pleased when she noticed you weren't there. Well i have to run again." With that Logan quickly left the lab again. Fox looked quickly over the data on the padd and put it aside for a while. "This has to wait for a while." he thought as he went on with something he had running in the lab. After a while when the experiment needed a little less attention he took the padd again, wondering a bit what Logan had found. While reading through the padd Tovans message came in. He quickly halted his experiment, put the padd in his pocket and ran off. A few minutes later he arrived at the infirmary. "How is she?" He asked Tovan.
In the time Tovan had contacted and gathered the Vesuvius senior staff, the medical team had taken care of what they believed to be a 4th year Vulcan female cadet. Professor T'Len herself oversaw the surgery that was required to staunch the bleeding. The narrow beam phaser had struck her in the shoulder and had nicked an artery.
After what seemed hours, T'Len stepped out into the waiting room. "To answer your question, Cadet Fox, she will be fine. Once security has questioned her, you may see her."
"Security?" Trey querried, boldly walking forward. "As Marine I am responsible for her safety. I require to be present when she is questioned."
"You are but a marine cadet," T'Len answered coldly, then relented as she noted the marine cadet's determination. She sensed something about this particular cadet, a certain pride and a sense of honour. "Very well, you may go in. The rest of you wait here, you are excused from your classes for the rest of the day."
Relieved, Trey entered the recovery ward and took up a position at the head of his CO's bed. Sonak in turn was just waking up and stirred briefly, her face showing the distress she felt. "L'Ola!" she cried, bolting upright. It took two nurses to subdue her and once she was calmed, her eyes took focus and gazed up at the security officer.
The Human officer, Lieutenant Commander Lucas Dawson, gazed down on the somewhat drowsy cadet. "Cadet van Breughel, when you are up to it, I have some questions for you regarding the abduction of Cadet Kanz." He sat down on the edge of the bed, careful not to jostle the patient. "Where were you when she was abducted?"
Sonak sighed, and closed her eyes, trying to remember what happened. "The forest on the academy grounds, a few hundred meters away from the main building," she answered after a long silence.
"Why did you and Kanz depart your workgroup? Why were the others not with you?"
"They had their own class to attend to," Sonak answered, "I wished to discuss...a personal matter with L'Ola."
"And then what happened?" Dawson smiled in encouragement, taking note of the threatening look Trey cast him when the marine thought the patient was being harassed. "At ease cadet Maverick, I am not distressing her...yet."
Sonak closed her eyes again. "I was with my back towards her when I heard a sound...the sound of a struggle. I turned and saw two holding L'Ola down, drugging her. I attempted to come to her aid....I was shot at by one of them...then all four discharged their weapon."
"What did they look like? Did they speak?"
The Vulcan nodded, clearly distressed over the issue. "One was called Dimitri...something about nobody getting hurt...and using a wrong setting of something. I do not remember, I am sorry."
"Leave," Trey suddenly spoke up, his eyes blazing as he stepped forward, placing a protective hand on the Vulcan's shoulder, "come back later, she needs to rest."
Dawson nodded in agreement. "I wil have to interview each of you," he stated, before walking out, "report to my office after you have put your friend at ease. Your other friends may now enter, until Doctor T'Len tells you otherwise. Please be advised not to leave the academy grounds, and you are all confined to your dorm when you are not due for class. Until further notice, for your safety."
(all)
At that moment, a young child, of approximately seven years old approached, standing a little distance away and taking all of the scene before him in.
(this is the introduction to our new counselor once he gets the OK to join in)
Donovan had been staring for probably five minutes. Something about that room drew him and he was simply unable to figure it out. He stood musing over these strange people and considered what could possibly be causing the strange feelings he was sensing.
They were what they were, and yet ... not.
He saw them as the same kind of youths that were everywhere on the academy campus, but inside they were different, they were not young, they were not naive, and they certainly weren't students.
As they turned to look at him, all he could do was stand and stare. Donovan was certainly not scared, but very puzzled. Of course, if he'd known that curiousity killed the cat he probably would have kept his mouth closed.
"Hello?" he said plainly, this mild betazoid accent curling around every accent, "What are you and where do you come from?"
Dragged.
That's all Marco had to look forward to, for the rest of his career, if the Commodore had anything to do with it.
Dragged.
Dragged from class to class, without being privy to the larger picture. The Commodore was a sharp thinker, but she was not one for explaining her actions. This drove D'Angelo crazy - which, in reality, was a reality.
He had finally come to the conclusion that the Commodore was the drag. He was going to be putting in for a transfer as soon as they got back to their original time.
In the present, whatever time period he was in currently, that is, he was more concerned with getting his CO from the operating table.
"Come on kid, move it." Marco shoved aside the betazoid kid, immediately recognizing the fact that he needed to shield his true emotions. After Sonak sensing his anger earlier in class, a clear violation of his privacy he might add, he was more on guard about his emotions.
The kid moved to the side, eying the doctor who had all of the anger pent up inside. He spoke, but Marco neither heard, nor cared, to respond to the kid.
"I said, who are you, and where do you come from?"
Relentless took the place of dragged as the operative word for Marco's displeasure.
It was clear that the boy knew the Vesuvius crewmembers were out of place... but what could Marco do? He had a room full of others that hadn't cracked the ruse. Some git of a betazoid wasn't going to botch this mission up, Marco would see to that. He continued the lie, hoping his persuasive attitude would permeate his inner consciousness - confusing the boy at best.
"I am a Doctor. I am in training." Both statements were true, but not in the traditional sense. "Do you want to be a doctor someday?"
The boy nodded, still skeptical.
"I advise against it- Too much work. Much easier to be a counselor, especially being a betazoid."
The boy acknowledged his heritage, intrigued by the human before hime.
"Hey - maybe we could use someone like you. You can read minds, no?"
He shrugged.
"I mean - do you mind if I take you around campus. I wouldn't mind using your abilities a bit." It was a bit forward of Marco, but the boy was just that- a boy. Marco found the youngin eager to join in. Marco thought it was the boy's curiosity. He was partially right. It wasn't out of a childish curiosity. It was a more informed curiosity. Donovan knew something was wrong, and was determined to find out what it was. Who was using who?
And where was this boy's parents? It really didn't concern Marco too much, not the least. He still questioned the boy. It wouldn't change his mind on using him. The cost was too great, or so it seemed, to change modus operandi on a young boy's circumstances.
"She'll be alright. I had a look, and she's stable." so stable that she was being restrained for her outburst following her awakening on the table. Tovan was there, by her side. He would be able to console her. Fox had arrived shortly after. The odd looking group was making quite the scene in the infirmary, and Marco felt his leaving would help to alleviate some of the skepticism surmounting in the room.
Marco and the boy left, in search for L'ola and her captors. Marco could feel the boy probing his brain, and made a strong attempt at clearing his mind.
OOC: Welcome, Mr. Daye. Feel free to take this where you want. I have no preconceived plans. Enjoy!
Donovan wasn't entirely sure he trusted this truly untrustworthy individual. He was being lead away from the area around his father's office and he was starting to dislike the way this was going. This man was intent on using him to his own devices and although he had the feeling that the man had a somewhat good motive, his methods of achieving his goals were not promising.
Van yanked himself away from the man and moved back and away.
"You are trying to shield yourself from me, but I have already seen enough," he said plainly with a gruff little pout, "You are not what you are supposed to be and you want to use me like some common tool. I am going to tell my father!"
He turned about quickly and made to march back to his father's office down the hallway.
(OOC: By the way, he's a full betazoid, not half. Also, some tagging would be nice, as opposed to being dragged about. Thanks for the welcome though I am glad to be here.)
Watching the little spectacle between D'Angelo and the little boy, Byrne rushed to the side of the child and grabbed the boy by the back of the arm and whispered sternly into his ear," We all have secrets, but it is how we expand on them makes us who we are and who we protect. Got it?".
Retreating, Logan held the child's arm and tried to escort him back into the crowd as not to make things obvious. Squatting down, he asked the child," What is your name?"
"My father calls me Van, but I am also known as Donovan", said the little boy. "I overheard you with my classmate, but I am a little more attentive. Can you sense the thoughts of Cadet van Breughel?", asked Byrne.
As the cadets went their ways, Byrne looked the young Betazoid directly in th eyes and asked if he knew the whereabouts of his fellow cadet L'Ola. Taken aback, the child rubbed his eyes and asked Logan for the truth behind the masquerade of them being out of time. Nodding, Byrne just brushed the question away, like usual. "I am really concerned that my friends are in danger, can you help me? I know the "Doctor" had plans for you, but I really need your help. I kind of care a good deal for the one injured and know that she needs her friend safely back."
Standing, Byrne offered his hand to the young Betazoid in confidence that soon, he would be an open book to him. (TAG Donovan)
With a touch of melancholy, Sonak gazed after Marco as he took the boy by his arm and started to drag him away. Her sharp hearing picked up the odd word exchanged between them, before Logan intervened and took the boy away yet again. ~that child is wise for his age~ she thought, somewhat worried that their mission might become compromised. ~but it already is compromised, L'Ola has been abducted~
The Vulcan glanced sideways at the dutiful marine. "Trey, were you not investigating a lead? Instead of watching over me, I would prefer you follow your lead. Lieutenant Dawson overthere has posted these two guards as my company. On your way out, please send Marco back in..."
As the marine walked away, she glanced the other way at Tovan. "You need not watch over me either," she told him in Vulcan, drawing frowns from the two Human guards, "but I do appreciate your company. It is...comforting to know I have my friends here with me. However, perhaps you could join the search party for L'Ola."
As Tovan too left, after a brief discussion and a few protests on his part, Sonak sank back in her pillows. She knew she had to rest, but there was no time for rest. There was a dissident on the loose which they had to track down, and evidently they were unable to complete a simple task set. "Tovan!" she called the navigator back, then lowered her voice as the Vulcan returned. "I need you to find out if you can contact Temporal Intelligence somehow. We need to know more about this dissident, as our task is near to impossible with the little information that we do have."
Just as Tovan left again, Marco re-entered the room, bearing himself like a true doctor who was displeased with his patient's behaviour. Fox followed in his wake, a worried frown creasing his brow. As they approached, Sonak offered them a small smile. "I would like your professional opinion doctor," she said, after telling the guards she wanted a moment alone with the two other cadets. They had left reluctantly, saying they would be just outside. "Am I fit to leave this bed? I cannot lay here and wait for results while L'Ola may be in danger. Fox, I need you to stay with Logan and work on the leads you have found. Report them to me tonight, when we are all back at our dorm."
With a nod, Fox left and Marco remained. "I feel I should share something with you doctor," she said, though reluctantly, "my behaviour in Ethics. I saw you looking after the two young women that entered late and were berated by Quinn. They resemble two young women who were my ....adversaries in my academy years. I believe to say I fear them would be put mildly. They have mistreated me to such extend that I preferred to just go their way than argue against them." She continued to tell him of her dream, of what had actually happened. "I hope you understand now," she finished, "to some extend. Perhaps you will learn to understand me better, or perhaps not. Just have patience, I have my way of doing things but I cannot do it without a crew to depend on. And that includes you as my chief medical officer. I know having an MD for a commanding officer is not always easy, but please understand that I do not seek to second guess you."
She paused, then continued after a long silence. "Did you not walk off with a Betazoid child? Or did Logan walk off with him? You must keep the child close, but do not bind him to you. He is but a child, even though he can compromise us. I believe instead, he could be of assistance." She smiled softly. "I see you had the same thought doctor, my compliments."
Trey headed to crime seen only to find in blocked off by campus security. “You there, what do you think you’re doing here this place is off limits to students. LEAVE NOW” shouted one of the security officers. Trey nodded in compliance and started to make his way back to he school grounds but he stopped in his tracks.
“Before I leave could I ask one question?”
“LEAVE NOW” replied the officer
“Please… the two involved were my friends and am worried about Lola, I just want to know if you guys have found any leads”
“Look kid I can’t divulge any information to you, now head back to the academy where it’s safe”
“Is any where truly safe if this could have happened here?”
“Okay… I get your point… I know I should not be doing this but if it makes you feel any better we found one of the culprit’s weapons”
“Really… and where is it right now?”
“The head of security has it in his positions”
“Thank you sir I do feel much better now. I well be on my way” and trey made his way back to the academy grounds. The information about the phaser could not have come at a better time, trey smiled as he remembered that he had an appointment with the man him self. He quickly made his way to Lieutenant Commander Lucas Dawson office
“Sir you wanted to see me.”
“Ah… yes… the over protective cadet. Have a seat, I have a few questions I would like to ask you.”
“Go right ahead I have no objections to your inquest”
“Okay then lust gets started… where were at the time of the abduction and shooting?”
“My self and Miss Winters where running simulations in simulator room four, we missed our ethics class because of it.”
“Do you have any idea who would want to harm your comrades?” “No sir non I can think of.” There was a pause in the questioning as the Lieutenant Commander took time to verify the cadets where abouts. Trey also noticed the phaser on his desk {so this must be the weapons the officer was talking about} he thought to him self “You’re cleared, you may leave”
“That’s an interesting looking phaser is it a new prototype” trey commented hoping to get a reflex response from the commander
“Interesting indeed”
“What do you mean?” asked trey
“Well by the looks of it it’s definitely of star fleet design but I can’t find any thing about it in any file”
“Maybe its custom made, can I have a look at it”
“No you may not but you can use the door”
“Yes sir” and with that he left the office trey now knew that the attackers were using weapons from a deferent time line which mean that some one knows about then.
Donovan wondered why these people were so intent on using him like he was an inanimate object. Something about that was insulting, but he could read them, their intentions were not bad, they weren't exactly good, but they weren't bad either. They needed him, though he wondered exactly why.
This man, motioned him toward the cadet.
"Commodore Reckus thinks I will be useful, it seems every member of your crew is intent on having me do some of your dirty work," he replied with a grimace, "Though I may do it for you, if you'll just tell me why I see a Commodore inside a person that should be a cadet and why you are, in my eyes, a twenty year old Commander! Honestly, you people are giving me a headache."
He was starting to begrudge these individuals that seemed so intent on using him but not telling him why they need him or what they happen to be. The fact that they are starfleet officers answered some of his questions. His father had once told him that if anything can happen, it will happen to a starfleet officer onboard a starship. The question was ... what did they propose he should do about it?
Watching as Marco kept trying to pull the young Betazoid away, he kept trying to project his thoughts but being careful as not to alert the CO of his intentions. Rushing to the Science Lab, he encountered Fox going over the information on the PADD Byrne gave him earlier.
"I know youn know about what happened in the courtyard, and I am really concerned about Maro's little twist in this mission, using a child for some covert mission of his. We need to get that child and find L'Ola and something is telling me that that child is one of us, and can help us get the heck back to our real time. Check his background, he knows more than I think we can tell him about us." (TAG Fox)
Following the security force, Logan made his way to Sonak's room. Walking in, he was confronted by campus security and Trey looking as mad as usual.
Blocking Logan's way, Trey growled and said," You have guts coming here after trying to snag the boy from the courtyard. I asked Sonak to allow Marco to take him to find L'Ola and get us back together."
Bulstering his chest, he tried to put up a show of force, which Logan really didn't see as impressive from a cadet. He proceeded into the room as he heard the Commodore request his presense.
Coming to the side of her bed, he quietly tried to sum up what was going on. "Sonak, Marco has the child, but I am not sure if the young boy knows what I think he does. Confusing, but I have a "feeling" that he is as much out of place as the rest of us are. And I think he may help us get past the one thing we have been missing. I know I'm not Sherlock Holmes or telepathic, but I think if he is a full-blooded Betazoid as he appears, he may help us get a clue as to who the sabatour is."
"Tovan told me about your dream, do you think it has something to do with this? I heard about the situation between you and Marco, you sure trusting him to just look for Kanz?" asked Byrne as he held her hand. " I need you to mind-meld with me to get the rest of the team on the same page and get us out of here, will you?" (TAG Sonak)
Again, dragged into the care facility, this time by an injured Commodore. It wasn't long, however, that his anger of being ordered around, and his embarrassment of being shown up by a kid, gave way to Sonak's explanation.
"That explains it. I thought you were mad at me!"
The whole elbow to the side, the push on Marco's leg to force him to remain in his seat- they weren't out of the Vulcan's lack of humor or childish instinct, they were out of concern for the crew, her safety, and the doctor's safety. Perhaps he wouldn't be talking to Command when he got back after all.
"I had the same idea, Commodore, but the kid isn't listening." Marco concentrated on his words. If the boy didn't hear him audibly, he would be hearing him telepathically. That was the intent anyway.
The guards stood uneasy, between the two and the boy. Seeing Marco eying the hallway suspicously, the reconvened in the room.
Sonak was torn between Marco and Logan; she really wanted to leave the room but a stern glance from the doctor told her that was definately out of the question. She hated feeling this useless and out of touch with things. They had an important mission to accomplish and how was she going to do this from a bed in sickbay?
She winced as she struggled to sit up, annoyed at the imbalance of a bandaged shoulder that was held tight to her body by a few strategically placed bandages of a different sort. Obviously, she wasn't allowed to move the arm and shoulder, but se felt fine otherwise, despite having been struck by an additional three phasers at heavy stun.
"The boy is not out of place Logan," she told her acting first officer, "he is of this time. However as a telepath he is privy to information an ordinary child would have no access to. Marco, take the child under your wing, but be careful how you deal with him. He is still a child, and though we may have use of him, he must want to help us. Do not force him."
Once Marco had left the ward, Sonak spotted Tovan leaving with Fox, probably trying to follow one lead or the other, despite their confinement to their dorm. Logan, however remained behind, looking troubled.
"Tovan told me about your dream, do you think it has something to do with this? I heard about the situation between you and Marco, you sure trusting him to just look for Kanz?"
The Vulcan pulled her hand from his grasp, feeling uneasy at the mere touch. She knew it'd hurt his feelings, even though that was the last thing she wanted to do. "Tovan should not have disclosed that, it was private," she answered coldly, "and what I do or do not trust Marco with, is between him and me. He is a competent doctor, whose sole concern right now is L'Ola's safety." Why was it that her own words sounded so odd just now? Logan's query made her question her own choices. "No, he is quite capable of what I assigned him to do. I trust his judgement," she concluded.
"I need you to mind-meld with me to get the rest of the team on the same page and get us out of here, will you?"
"I do not understand," Sonak replied, "I see no need for a mind meld, however if you insist..." She trailed off, raising her hand to touch Logan's face.
As Tovan followed Fox to the dorms, he considered Sonak's orders. He needed to somehow attempt to contact Temporal Intelligence to find out more, but that would be difficult if he was confined to his room. However, he reasoned, campus security would probably not be on the lookout for him just yet, and probably would have more to worry about than a wandering Vulcan. Besides, the orders of his commanding officer outweighed any orders from a security officer.
He turned to Fox, and explained his plan. "Sonak told me to attempt to find some way to contact Temporal Intelligence, and the Temporal Mechanics lab would seem to be the best way to do it."
(Tag Fox)
As they walked towards the physics building, Tovan surveyed the security arrangements. They seemed rather sparse, but there were likely some security officers by the more sensitive labs, the one's Tovan and Fox would need to get into. His logic proved correct, as he spied two ensigns outside the main temporal lab. They hadn't spotted the two cadets yet. He turned to Fox. "What do you suggest we do?"
Trey made his way back to sickbay to inform Sonak about is discovery but instead he walked in on her and Logan in a mind meld.
“am I interrupting something?” he asked with a smile on his face “ couse you know I could always come back later” he added jokingly as he continued to walk towards the two of them.
“I assume you have found sort of information.” Commented Sonak.
“Yes I do… it seems in the rush to make there getaway one of your attacker dropped there phaser’s and guess what?”
“come on man just spit it out already” snapped Logan.
“take it easy man, you could get back to your mind melding after am done, like I was saying it seem the weapon is of star fleet design, but the weird part is, its from a future time line. I think they know who we are and why we’re here.”
