"This way," the Doctor said, trying hard not to make eye contact with his medical counterpart- Counselor Daye. The Romulan was escorted out.
"I think we should take her to sickbay. You can talk to her while we are there." Is that alright with you?
The counselor spoke calming words to the Romulan, who didn't seem too excited to be heading toward sickbay. Romulans didn't make the best patients, Marco remembered. Hopefully the presence of the boy..er.. counselor *I really need to stop thinking he's a boy, he thought* hopefully the counselor's presence would be a calming one.
In sickbay, Marco came to the realization that the Vulcan Commodore's brother's wife was a Romulan. Romulan! This family was weird. Jatan seemed to reiterate the thought as he walked in the room.
"This, apparently, is your sister in law.. Although I don't see much of a relation." His jocularity was not received warmly, and Marco instantly felt awkward in the room. Luckily, the Counselor was there, and he seemed to take note of the sudden switch in mood and started talking with Jatan and Elanna while Marco checked her over.

Van was fairly certain that he was out of his depth. However, he was determined to soldier on. Elanna was truly distressed, her husband meant a great deal to her as did the children. Jatan was almost as puzzled about the situation as Van was. Which made him smile involuntarily. When engaging in comforting an unfamiliar female, all males seemed to fall back on vague motions of sympathy and neither he nor Jatan were much different.
Doctor D'Angelo's joke didn't quite go over well with either Jatan or Elanna, but Van managed to stifle a smile. He was trying to break the ice and unfortunately he picked two species that didn't generally didn't react well to jokes: Romulan and anyone that would marry a vulcan.
As the doctor began his scans, Elanna's irritability rose to unprecendented heights she did not like having anyone that was not her husband or one of her children that close to her. Without thinking, Van touched the doctor's wrist and moved it out an inch.
"Don't be alarmed," he said to Elanna, "He's only doing his job."

Sitting in the FO's chair, Byrne fidgeted trying to get comfortable in his new post. Using the comm system, he tried to overhear the situation being attended to in the transporter room. Listening in on the comm traffic, he caught wind of the visit of the Romulan Commander wasn't a wasted invitation.
Tapping into the Main Engineering systems, Byrne programmed the alert weapons systems to maintain a quick deterrent in the event of a possible attack.
Once the family was taken to Sickbay, Byrne stated a calm alert on the Bridge and sat watching the hustle going on. 'Man, is this what happens while I am playing with the engines? I am so not missing this. Guess I will have to adapt,' he thought to himself.
Removing himself to the rear of the Bridge, he started scanning the LCARS about the region they were in and the history behind Commodore Sonak's lineage.

Hearing Trey's comments, Tovan felt something... for a brief instant, he wanted to deliver a fist to the caustic marine's face. As he coordinated with the Romulan helmsman to establish escort, he could feel a anger burning deep within him. He hadn't felt even remotely similar to anger for many years, and the sensation disturbed him. He had been able to medidate for more than a few moments at a time since the crew's little jaunt into the past.
As he watched Maverick, Tovan remembered being thrown out of his chair at their first meeting, and became filled with a longing to return the favor. He had to get away from him.
"Permission to leave the bridge," Tovan asked Commander Bryne. "One of the navigational instruments is malfunctioning, and I would like to take a look at it."
Bryne frowned, but replied, "Very well, just make sure to get some relief."
"I am aware of the procedure. Sir." Tovan replied surprising himself with his own annoyance. He summoned Ensign Porter again, and headed for the turbolift. He intended to go to his quarters and attempt to meditate, but ended up wandering the corridors, looking for... what? He needed clarity, and wasn't sure where to find it. Eventually, he headed towards the mess hall, hoping some plomeek soup and a view of the stars might calm his mind.

The moment the warbirds decloacked Fox has scanned them carefully. De scans showed that the shields were not up and disruptors not powered up. Still he did not feel at ease much with several warbirds floating around the Vesuvius. And with things not going as it was planned. "Who know's....." he thought "there might be even more, ready to aid the decloacked vessels when needed."
Fox knew of several ways to detect cloacked ships, a lot needed other vessels to be present, so those were no use now. The other options might be interpreted as an agressive action, so no option were left. He staired at the main screen a bit, which showed the leading warbird and wondered if there was anything else he could do now than monitoring the sensors, seeing if there was something not right.

Elanna nodded, straighening her slender figure proudly, though she watched like a hawk when the human doctor reached for her baby. She watched as yet another, slightly older human in teal approached. The human had commander's pips on his collar, though he seemed subordinate to the younger doctor, who had less pips on his collar. ~strange hierarchy~ she thought, as she watched the two humans examine the baby and the older children.
Sonak had said they could be trusted, and as Elanna trusted the Vulcan's word, it had to be so. Vulcans never lied, and Rick had always spoken highly of his Vulcan sister. ~how odd~ she thought, ~a vulcan adopted and raised by humans~
Elanna turned to Daye. "They will find him won't they?" Daye, judging from his behaviour, was still new to being a counselor, Elanna observed. Like many a Romulan, she was a proud woman, too proud to accept counseling help. However for the sake of her children, she would. "What do you want to know mr Daye?" she surprised him, as she settled down on the biobed, letting D'Angelo do whatever he needed to do to ensure the safety of the ship.
"Mommy?" young Elias suddenly called, "mommy where's dad?" Wide-eyed, the boy glanced around, clinging to the biobed in fear. Jatan walked up to him and gently applied a hypospray to his arm.
"Your father is playing a little hide and seek with his sister," Jatan assured his wife's nephew, "I'm sure we'll seek him out soon." He caught Elanna's appreciative glance, and smiled. Then he turned to D'Angelo and Daye. "They'll be fine, just need a little observing." He looked up. "Elanna, would you mind if I took your kids to the mess? Then you can have a quiet conversation with Marco and Van here...don't worry, they're very nice and very caring. My wife wouldn't have them in her service if she didn't utterly trust them."
Elanna nodded, then returned her attention to the two young medical practioners and nodded her concent to proceed. Meanwhile, Jatan took the two Romulan children to the mess hall, together with his own five young children. He seemed pleased to see the kids got along fine, despite difference in species. ~trust children to see beyond the colour of their skin~ he thought, then spotted Tovan sitting at a table. "Lieutenant Tovan, may we join you?"

Tovan sat in the messhall, looking out the window at the stars as they went by. He had once read that some Vulcans on starships used the stars in their meditation, visualizing each star as an individual thought. He mused that the stars rushing by reflected his own thoughts, chaotic, rushing. Perhaps he should speak to the counselor after all...
His deliberations were interrupted by the entrance of a large group of children, herded by Jatan.
"Lieutenant Tovan, may we join you?" Jatan asked.
Putting on is usual stoic face, Tovan nodded his assent. Jatan got the kids organized into sitting down. These must be Sonak's children, and those two must be the Romulan children, Tovan thought, noticing their elegantly pointed ears. He was grateful that many of them were either Vulcan or half-Vulcan, they tended to be a little less unruly than children of other species, and the Romulans were a little unsure of themselves in this new place.
"Why aren't you on the bridge?" Jatan asked.
Tovan was loathe to admit his recent insecurities, and had to come up with an excuse quickly. "The course had been set, and my direct attention was no longer required, so I decided to go get something to eat." The excuse had the virtue of being half-true. Though commonly held that Vulcans couldn't lie, they were actually quite capable, when logic demanded.

Sensing the stress among the Bridge crew, Logan sat back in the command chair, scoping the replacements that have filled in for the primary Bridge staff. A little disturbed that the officers were absent during a crucial first contact.
Sending a quick communication to Commander Fox, he needed a way to explain his paranoia of the current situation with the Romulans. He sent Fox his explanation of his little care package for the Romulans, if things went old school with the Romulans deceiving them.
Stepping down from the main seating area, Logan excused himself to the 'facilities', heading towards the aft of the Bridge. Turning quickly, he glanced a new female Lt.. Stepping aside, Logan tossed her a smile and kept walking, keeping the Lt. in his glance.
After a bit, he called up the current locations of the command staff and relayed the information to the command chair.
Checking the information, he recalled Lt.Tovan and Commander Kanz to the Bridge for possible evasive procedures that they may encounter.

"My wife wouldn't have them in her service if she didn't utterly trust them."
Van almost laughed at the words, though mostly out of nervousness. He returned the Romulan woman's steady gaze and tried not to be so human. He was a betazoid afterall, surely he could get past his own insecurities. There was more to the world than just he, himself. It was like he was hearing his mother yelling at him because of some selfish thing he'd done. He fought the urge to laugh and then the urge to apologize.
He noted the strange look he was getting from Dr. D'Angelo, but he dismissed it. It was time to get this show on the road. He felt her general discord at the absence of her children, but there was something else too: unease, anger, and though it was only vague and undefined, a desire for revenge, and also ... pride. She did not like being made to worry about her husband nor did she enjoy having to traverse through uncharted territory to reclaim him and the idea of throwing her whole life story at a youngling like himself was beyond annoying, in fact, bordering on pure irritation. She loved Rick and disliked the idea of anything unpleasant happening to him and the idea that perhaps such things had happened, or could be in the process of happening, had distressed her to the point of emotionlessness. She'd followed the sorrow to its inevitable possibility and was working her way through to the other side. A very fragile position for anyone, but especially for a woman with so many others relying on her.
As Marco finished his examinations, Van gestured for some amount of privacy. The doctor obliged grudgingly as he went to review the results from his initial scans.
"I understand the stress you are under," he said honestly, "I understand you are a proud woman, but even pride has its limits when children are involved. I am here if you need to talk in confidence, but I will not hound you. If it would please you to talk to me, you may find my office on deck two. In the meantime, I suggest you return to your guest quarters and rest while your brother-in-law sees to your children. If there is word of your husband, I am sure you'll be one of the first people to hear it."
With that he stepped back and offered a hand to help her down from the biobed. As she was preparing to leave he also suggested that she make contact with one of the liason officers onboard.
"If anything, they can arrange activities to help keep you and your family occupied," he continued as he walked her nearly to her quarters, "that can help you and the children to not be consumed by ... well, heavy thoughts."
She was curious at his behavior. She'd expected him to interrogate her for any information regarding her husband. However, Van was not interested in such methods, they often brought forth incomplete and sometimes altogether inaccurate information. It was better for her to come to him as she remembered things and that's exactly what he intended to do.

Daye showed a gentler side to Elanna and the children than D'Angelo had ever seen prior, and it surprised the Doctor. Up until now, the doctor only had seen the facetious, dry witted, tempermental...
"I guess I am through. Privacy granted." The sentence ended with a bit of a snarl to the counselor, but that was only because he had not portrayed any other emotion yet to the boy... the doctor.
The counselor wasted no time ushering the group out of sickbay, and onto who knows where. D'Angelo didn't care, he had other concerns to deal with.
********** A few hours later **************
Approaching Jatan, he put his hand on the older Doctor's shoulder. "You saw the readings, didn't you?"
Jatan was still facing away from Marco, staring at a bulkhead in front of him. He didn't turn around. Instead he just slowly nodded, wishing to be alone, but also wishing to be comforted. If only the counselor were here still here.
Marco breathed heavily. "It isn't completely a lost cause. It can reverse itself." but Jatan already had a padd with a list of stats. He turned around, wiped the tear from his eye, and showed the padd to Marco. "I had to see what the odds of survival were."
Marco knew the chances before Jatan even handed the padd over. He was just trying to comfort his counterpart.
"What am I going to tell Sonak?" Formalities were out of the question.
"Tell her the truth. I took a blood sample. It's still in the hyper-metabolic extractor. That will tell us the extent of the problem."
"He is so young, though." The Doctor was starting to compose himself as Marco went back to a console. "If you want, I can tell her. She isn't exactly used to hearing good news from myself anyway."
Blowing his nose, Jatan consciously made the decision to act professional again.
"When we know more, we can devise a treatment. I suggest you take the rest of your shift off. Spend time with your wife.. and nephew."

He sent Fox his explanation of his little care package for the Romulans, if things went old school with the Romulans deceiving them. Fox quickly looked at his console when it gave a soft beep. Then he looked over his panel at Logan as he saw Logan had send him something. Fox wondered why Logan had send him a message in stead of just telling him whatever was in the message. As Fox looked at Logan, Logan turned his head and nodded toward him. Fox nodded back and turned his attention to his console again, going through what Logan had send. Fox read the explanation and the little surprice Logan had perpaired. He knew it was only a precaution in case things would get out of hand. "We have to do anything to avoid using this....... package." he thought. Behind the doors of the bridge opened again. Another group of officers entered the bridge to releave others of their duty shift.

Upon hearing the call, Tovan excused himself, and started heading towards the bridge. Suddenly, he felt a powerful compulsion, as if there was a voice calling over the comm system, but in his head. It was screaming at him! Get out! Run! Go! Tovan clapped his hands to his head, attempting to block it out, but it was futile. He felt his legs running, and he didn't know where they were taking him. No! I musn't! Tovan thought, but there was nothing he could do. Vaguely, he heard another page for him to report to the bridge, but it failed to penetrate his maddened state. The assault was far to powerful.
Suddenly, it stopped. Of course, it was perfectly logical... The protests were just the result of the recent control problems he had been having. But they were gone now, it was all so clear...
Calmly, Tovan proceeded to the turbolift. "Transporter Room" he said. He was glad for the sudden serenity that had passed over him. It was only logical that when he arrived, he would enter the transporter chamber.
"Lieutenant Tovan?" the transporter chief looked at him quizzically. "I thought I heard you paged to the bridge."
"That was an error. Please transport me to the following coordinates." Tovan said as he tapped at the console.
"I'll have to clear this with the Commodore," the chief said.
"That will not be necessary," Tovan said.
"Sorry, standard procedures," the chief said, reaching for the comm. He slumped as Tovan's hand applied the nerve pinch. It was only logical... Suddenly, the screaming began again. What was he doing?! Assaulting an officer? Vaguely, Tovan was aware of his hands energizing the transporter, and his legs carrying him to the pad. He barely felt the beam take him as he wrestled with his own mind.
Tovan rematerialized in the dark, with a single light shining on him. The screaming had stopped, thankfully, but neither had he regained the serenity. His thoughts were as chaotic as before. He heard warp engines, and realized he was on a starship, what type, he could not discern.
"Where am I?" he called into the darkness.
"That's not what you need to be concerned with that. It is illogical," spoke a voice from the shadows.
"Who are you?" Tovan replied.
Despite himself, Tovan gasped as the owner of the voice stepped into the light...
OOC: And thus begins my LOA. Have fun with this little thread, and I'll see y'all in a couple of months

Elanna Elanna nodded at Daye's suggestions; she felt the need to trust this young man but couldn't bring herself to do it. Not yet at any rate, despite this being the ship of her husband's sister. ~A Vulcan sister~ Elanna thought ~Vulcans do not lie and I must trust her. For Rick's sake I must~ She glanced up at Daye, not sure what to think of him. He seemed so young and so new to this, yet he seemed to want to help.
"Will you take me to see the bridge, and after that back to my children?" she asked, looking worried and frightened. "While your doctor seems very nice, taking my children out for food, I really prefer to keep them with me." She gazed at the counselor, expecting a positive answer. "This Jatan, how trustworthy is he? Even though he is my sister's husband? Does he have children of his own? Apart from those that belong to my sister and her late mate?"
Jatan[/b] Jatan watched the young, troubled Vulcan leave while trying to feed his youngest daughter. "Sevus, why don't you and T'Kimi take your siblings and your cousins to the playground? I'm sure your aunt Elanna will appreciate that. Tell Miss Andrews that I will pick you all up later."
The young Vulcan boy nodded, took one of his younger siblings by the hand then reached for Toman. "T'Kimi, please take Sianna and little Elias?" Sevus turned to his stepfather. "Father, will you keep Miriya with you or do you want me to take her as well?"
Jatan smiled down at his stepson, the oldest of his children. "No, I'll take her back with me to sickbay. Now go, I'll let your mother know where you are when I get back to sickbay. Please stay out of trouble and do as Miss Andrews says."
"Yes father," the boy replied, leading the rest of the children out of the mess hall.
Later, Jatan sat miserably in the CMO's office, holding his daughter close to him while he looked at the other baby that lay in his daughter's crib. "I haven't the heart to tell her," he told D'Angelo, "perhaps it is better, as CMO, that you do it. I just can't. Isn't there anything we can do for the child? She is still so young, and vulnerable."
Sonak[/b] Sonak walked back onto the bridge, upon which Logan aptly vacated her seat. "Report!" she called as she eased herself into her own comfortable seat, rubbing her temples as she felt a severe headache come up. "Any sign of Ma'Jel and her warbird?"
At OPS, Thorad shook his head. "Negative ma'am...just those that are here now. No news on the diplomats either, though I have finally received a list of diplomats."
"Give me their names," the Vulcan ordered.
His antennae twitching, Thorad nodded. "I'll give you their species followed by their name," he stated. "Klingon Kamal, Klingon Maureen, Tholian Losan, Andorian M'Nora, Human Rick van Breughel, Human Roseanna Watson, Romulan Eileen, Romulan Tyron, Breen Thord, Carassian Malad Isaan, Bajoran Tol Amalie, Vulcan T'Sadie, Vulcan Soret."
"Quite a list," Sonak commented, "and any information on who has them and what they are demanding?"
Thorad nodded. "Romulan separist faction Freedom of Romulus," he answered, after briefly checking his data. "They're demanding the Romulan government ceases talks with the Federation and affiliated species. They're extremely xenophobic, refusing any contact with other species but Romulans. Their abduction of these diplomats is considered an act of war by both the Federation and the Romulan Empire, hence the Romulans asked for our help and this ship in particular."
Sonak nodded. "Check with Commander Kanz and Captain Maverick," she ordered, "prepare to evacuate the diplomats as soon as we locate them. Keep in touch with that warbird, but do not let them know we know how many diplomats were taken. Speak to no-one but Ma'Jel. She is the only one we can trust."
Thorad nodded, then paged both Kanz and Maverick to meet him in briefing room two.
Sonak watched him leave the bridge, then shared a concerned look with her new first officer. "I thought I heard you page Lieutenant Tovan?" At Logan's nod, she frowned. "Then he should have been at his post five minutes ago." She tapped her combadge. "Bridge to Lieutenant Tovan, where are you?"
No response. Sonak repeated her page, but when he still remained silent, she addressed the computer. "Computer, locate Lieutenant Tovan."
=^=Lieutenant Tovan is no longer aboard this vessel=^=
"Where did he go? How did he leave?"
=^=Unable to comply, please rephrase=^=
Sonak sighed. "What was his last known location?"
=^=Last known location is transporter room two. Lieutenant Tovan beamed off the ship to an unknown location.=^=
"Did he beam out himself?"
=^=Negative. Controls were set but they were not activated. Location of transporter beam unknown.=^=
Sonak glanced sideways at Logan. "Red alert!" she called, "we have an unknown vessel out there. Logan, take OPS and contact the Romulans. Ask them if they are reading anything other than our own ships. I want my navigator back!"

The Doctor sat at his desk, attempting to gain the nerve to contact the Commodore. She was a busy woman, and he knew the chances of him finding time with her were minimal, thus would call her by communique, and let her know it was urgent.
~/\~ Commodore Reckus is currently using her combadge. Please try again ~/\~
*Interesting* Marco thought. That was probably the first time that he had ever received a busy signal on the ship's communication channel. Unfortunately, that meant he needed to work up the nerve to call her again.
As he pressed down on his badge, the ship went into red alert, which canceled all communiques pending command orders.
"Now what?!" The doctor yelled out. Jatan had already left, and nobody was there to receive his latest outburst.
A list of names started populating the console in his office. Unrequested data was pouring in. He was sure the list had something to do with the current mission, Sonak Reckus was good at giving information. She would probably be down anytime now to explain what to do with the data.
The Doctor read the screen. Kamal... Maureen... Losan... - All diplomats that had disappeared.
"Van Breughel" stuck out boldly in Marco's eyes as he stared blankly at the screen. It jerked him back into reality that Sonak was also missing a brother. Poor family.
Marco straightened himself up in realization that if Commodore Reckus did require his assistance with the data, probably seeking their biographies, and what was unique about this motley crew, then it would probably be where he could give her the unfortunate news about her nephew.

As Commander Kanz stepped onto the Bridge, the Red Alert klaxon sounded. Slamming his fist down on the Command chair console, the acting navigational officer pulled up the cause of the Alert on the Main Viewing screen.
"Bridge to Lt. Maverick, I mean Captain Maverick. I need a full security and engineering team to the Main Transporter Room. Lt. Commander DiNardo, I need a full sweep and results immediately in the Transporter Room. Byrne, out".
Heading for the Science station, he comm-ed Commander Fox to join him on the Bridge. Punching in his access code, he drew up the scenario he preprogrammed earlier.
Watching the sensor sweeps, he was able to bring up and link into the Romulan data being transfered to the station.
"L'Ola, I need you to activate the Main Navigational Dish and send out a full tachyon bombardment of the immediate area in which a ship can successfully transport from this ship. And I want this info posted to the tactical board. Now!", yelled Byrne.
"Commodore, we have found trace ionization about a kilometer aft of the Romulan envoy in front of us. Dissipation reads they, whoever they are, have left the area and taken Lt. Tovan with them. Actions are in place to address this issue".

No sooner had Van returned to his quarters did he hear a red alert slam its way into effect. It was a raucous sound, one that made the blood rise and simmer about the head and ears and it was a sound that brought with it a wave of emotion. The crew's immediate emotional states were all put on pause as klaxons brought about thoughts of fiery, astro-death deep in the heart of "enemy territory". Van decided to head to the bridge and see what help he could provide, though he doubted his limited abilities could quell the feelings and anxieties of an entire crew of people.
Still, he marched up to the bridge with grim determination on his handsome, young face. He made his way to the bridge in record time and just as Commander Byrne was making his suggestions. The commodore was torn, though she knew it was her duty to remain on task both to her brother and to her superior officers, she had a kinship with Lieutenant Tovan. Van felt as though she was looking for a reason to choose between the two issues, so he provided her with a very obvious one.
"If the ship has left the area then we would have to pursue them and thus violate the agreement we have with the Romulans," Van said as the Commodore considered, "Our current mission depends on their cooperation and good will, I suggest we file all of our current information regarding the current area, basic scanner readings, both internal and external, and contact Star fleet. If worse comes to worse, we will have to save the location and rescue of Lieutenant Tovan until a later date."
Somehow the commander did not like his response, though Van himself knew it was the most logical. There was a kinship amongst crew members and no one wanted to leave their friends behind, but sometimes it was a part of the job. It was something that Van had only recently been made to deal with concerning his transfer from the academy. However, it was a valuable lesson that was helping him return the commander's stare.

Before she could respond to her first officer's report, the counselor, who had entered the bridge earlier, cut in. "Our current mission depends on their cooperation and good will, I suggest we file all of our current information regarding the current area, basic scanner readings, both internal and external, and contact Star fleet. If worse comes to worse, we will have to save the location and rescue of Lieutenant Tovan until a later date."
She cast him a solid glare and if her look had been a dagger, Van would be a very dead man right now. However, she knew he was absolutely right; their priority right now lay with the diplomats. Their safety would come before that of a singular officer. "Ah, the needs of the many," she sighed as she sank back in her seat, feeling completely desolated.
"Thank you counselor, for reminding me of where our priorities lie, however I assure you I had not forgotten." She motioned to the seat to her left. "Please sit down, I am growing weary of having to look up at you." She glanced to her right. "Call Kanz and Maverick to the bridge. I want them to start extensive scanning and save any location our abductors may have taken Tovan to. Meanwhile, Logan, I want you to see if you can get into contact with Commander Ma'Jel."
At Logan's nod, she turned back to the counselor. "How is my sister in law doing? Have you been able to learn anything from her? Who might benefit from abducting a group of diplomats, among which Romulan diplomats?"
While she waited for Van to respond, she tapped her combadge. "Bridge to sickbay, Doctor would you please come up to the bridge? You may be needed here very soon and I want your report on Elanna and her children."

"...and I want your report on Elanna and her children."
Marco was already on his way to bridge when the call came through. He had on his padd the bios of all the diplomats, and found nothing of interest, other than a bout of Romulan flu that each of them had about five months ago. It wasn't uncommon for diplomats such as these to have similar illnesses. They tended to travel together. If one of them got sick, usually all of them did. What was strange, thought, was that the group had not traveled on a Romulan ship, or with any outside Romulans, around that time period. That would definitely be a point of interest for the Commodore.
Padd in hand, he entered the bridge, knowing full well that what Sonak really was after was the prognosis of her nephew. The bridge was neither the time nor the place to be discussing such issues, and Marco would petition for relocation before discussing.
There was no need however. He could see that Van... Dr. Daye, that is, was already counseling the First Officer and the Commodore of the current situation. Marco cleared his throat to gain attention, to which Sonak motioned toward the science station. D'Angelo assumed she wanted him to man the bloody thing, so he did - occupying the space in front of the console with the little experience he had gained in Starfleet Academy.
"What exactly am I looking for?" he asked Commander Byrne.
"Keep monitoring for ion traces. That will tell us if something is..." before Logan finished, Marco announced that the console was already showing an ion trail. Logan, concerned, punched a few more buttons. At this time, Marco realized that he had less knowledge of the Science console than he once had. On his freighter assignment, there wasn't much of a science station. Pretty much one station did it all. He didn't realize how much knowledge one could lose when they didn't use it.
Logan announced Tovan's disappearance, and the bridge fell silent, but got busy. Marco stood waiting for further orders, hoping he wouldn't have to tell Sonak about her nephew at this time, hoping Dr. Daye was too preoccupied to feel the Doctor's sympathies, and hoping the Commander Fox would arrive quickly.

Heading for the Science station, he comm-ed Commander Fox to join him on the Bridge. Punching in his access code, he drew up the scenario he preprogrammed earlier. Fox was in his quarters enoying some off-duty time when the red alert was initiated. Short after that his comm-badge beeped and logans voice could be heard. "Byrne to Fox." Still sitting in a chair in his quarters he leaned over to the table where he had put his comm-badge on and tabbed it briefly. "Yes commander?" Fox answered "We need you on the bridge right now." Fox sighed softly. "On my way." he answered, quickly grabbed his comm-badge and attached it to his uniform again and rose from his chair. He quickly left his quarters, almost running toward the turbolift. On this short 'run' he nearly bumped into an ensign, quickly excused for it and went on. Withing 5 minutes Fox walked onto the bridge and headed for the science station where Logan still was. He quickly briefed Fox and showed the readings. As Logan returned to his own seat Fox said "I'll keep track on these for as long as our scanners allow." Logan briefly turned and nodded.

Trey was seated at his desk in is quarters going trough his team evaluations when Commander Logan Byrne’s voice came from his com badge =/\=Bridge to Lt. Maverick, I mean Captain Maverick. I need a full security and engineering team to the Main Transporter Room. Lt. Commander DiNardo, I need a full sweep and results immediately in the Transporter Room. Byrne, out=/\= trey made his way to transporter room two to find the transport operator lying on the floor unconscious. He then placed his fingers on the neck of the operator to check his pulse, trey then noticed a bruising on the neck of the operator which seemed consistent with a Vulcan nerve pinch. Trey then checked the transporter console. He carried the unconscious man to the med bay then made his way to the bridge. It was a buzz of activity. Maverick leaned over commodore sonaks right shoulder and whispered in her ear
“it seems that tovan attacked transporter operator. I found him unconscious and the bruising on his neck seemed to have been coursed by a nerve pinch”
the commodore eyes flashed with surprise at treys statement.

Commander Fox walked between Marco and the science console, completely ignoring the fact that the doctor was manning the station. It seemed to be the general mood of the ship... ignore the new guy.
He looked over at Dr. Daye. Heh - he realized he wasn't the new guy anymore. The counselor was. Well - either way, the crew-members always seemed clique-ish. The drills earlier in the year were supposed to promote teamwork... but through all the mishaps and misunderstandings, the Doctor became more isolated.
Isolation would be great at this point. Sonak wanted a status on the health of the patients. It was weighing on her mind, apparently, as First Officer Byrne was busy handling the red alert situation. With Fox at the science console, he had no excuse.
"We need to speak in private." That was going to have to wait, though, since D'Angelo had more pressing matters relating perhaps to the red alert.
"I need to tell you about the diplomats, though. They all had a strain of Romulan Flu... but none of them have been in contact with Romulans. In fact, the Klingons and the Romulan... your brother, has it lying dormant in their systems... If it becomes active while they are gone, there could be serious repercussions to their health." Doctor D'Angelo's facial expression as he said this spoke volumes, and was short only to him drawing his finger past his throat.
"And Elanna and her children?" Commodore Reckus asked again, expecting a quick "they're fine." Instead, she got a heavy sigh from the doctor, and a "Can we meet in your ready room."
A few minutes later, the two emerged. Sonak had a sullen look on her face, which was flushed green. The news was obviously not good, but the bridge crew was busy acting on the current information. They had caught up with the ship that left the ion trail...

Vesuvius Sonak wasn't happy with the news her CMO had brought her, but it wasn't to be helped. It was his duty to inform her if crewmembers or guests were ill and possibly posed a threat to her crew. Fortunately, the baby carried nothing contageous even though her young life was in extreme danger. "Do what you can for her what you can," she told Marco, gently squeezing his shoulder. "I know you will try everything you have in your arsenal of cures and researches." She paused briefly. "However, my brother is quite human. Only his sons, daughter and wife are Romulan. His daughter, the baby, is even half-human."
Releasing the young doctor, she walked back onto the bridge and eased herself in her seat, letting out a long and worried sigh. Her expression though, revealed nothing about what she was feeling, however her first officer seemed to have become sensitive to her moods, even when she displayed none. "Logan, where would I be without you," she sighed as she fixed a gaze of sadness on the main screen. "Counselor Daye has been a marvel talking to Elanna, and Jatan is giving her some time to herself by taking care of her children. But what about me?"
She averted her gaze when she heard a set of doors slide open and shut. Lieutenant Maverick entered the bridge, located her and strode straight towards her to lean over her shoulder and whisper something in her ear. “it seems that tovan attacked transporter operator. I found him unconscious and the bruising on his neck seemed to have been coursed by a nerve pinch”
"Did he?" Sonak wondered, "why would he do that? Trey, I want you to investigate his disappearance. Trace his last movements up to his disappearance. Who did he meet with, what was his mood?" She was very aware of the fact that Tovan had been suffering from emotional turmoils, and not just from having engaged in a brief mind-meld with her during their academy time. He was suffering from it before that, but the mind-meld seemed to have sparked it even further. "Report your findings to me only. And Trey? Do please be discrete about it?"
The young marine nodded and headed back to his station just at the time Thorad and Kanz returned to the bridge, both carrying a solemn look on their faces. The Vulcan signaled for the Betazoid's attention. "L'Ola, a moment please?" She waited until L'Ola had stepped down to the command level. "There have been developments," she started, somewhat hesitant. "We have received a list of missing diplomats." Again she hesitated. "Maureen, your foster sister, is among the missing diplomats. I want you to make it your priority to track the ship they are on. Ma'Jel's vessel has arrived. Work with her security chief on tracking our diplomats. Time is of the essence, there is a virulent virus active among the group."
Unknown Romulan vessel Rick van Breughel kept much to himself since they were captured. He had no desire to keep his fellow diplomats entertained, even though some among the diverse group had become quite close friends. He needed to think, and he was very worried about his family.
"Does anyone have an idea as to why we're being abducted?" he finally asked, though the others merely shook their heads. The Tellarite resorted to a series of grunts, curses and shouts, mostly directed at their captors, who in turn seemed to ignore them. The injured had been attended to, including Rick's broken wrist. He'd taken a nasty fall after they had been ushered to their current location.
Truth to be told, they weren't being treated badly, they were getting well fed and their quarters were actually decently sized, though somewhat cramped to hold a group their size. They took turns in getting their sleep as there were not nearly enough beds in their quarters. "I hope someone will come looking for us soon," he murmured, sitting back down in his corner, cradling his wrist. "And I wouldn't be surprised if it were my sister assigned to find us."

No one could doubt that being Chief of Security on a starship was a challenging and varied job. Especially when the starship in question had civilians living on board, guests that were related to diplomats, and a tactical alert all at the same time.
Of course L'Ola had made sure most people weren't aware of the tactical alert part. It tended to scare people and didn't exactly help relations with nearby ships. But she wasn't going to let the ship be escorted by Romulans without the ability to fight instantly.
She reported back to the bridge and saw Sonak trying to get her attention.
"L'Ola, a moment please? There have been developments, we have received a list of missing diplomats. Maureen, your foster sister, is among the missing diplomats. I want you to make it your priority to track the ship they are on. Ma'Jel's vessel has arrived. Work with her security chief on tracking our diplomats. Time is of the essence, there is a virulent virus active among the group."
A few years back and L'Ola wouldn't have cared any more for her sort-of-sister than any other diplomat. In fact she would have probably dreaded running into her. But things had changed since then, and now the news made the situation that bit more personal. Her determination to succeed noticeably increased.
"I'll make contact straight away, Commodore." She paused for a second and hesitated, "And... thanks for letting me know who's missing." She headed to the security office and sent a message to Ma'Jel's ship asking for the head of security to contact her directly. Whilst she waited for a reply, L'Ola sent a message to Lieutenant Keggin to ask him to take over the department while she tracked the ship down.
The screen in front of her flashed to indicate an incoming transmission, the source of which appeared to be Ma'Jel's ship. She smiled as she accepted the communication.
"This is Centurion Lerak, head of security."
"Commander L'Ola Kanz. Thank you for responding to my message so quickly, Centurion."
"You did say it was important."
L'Ola nodded, "I've been trying to track down the ship with the diplomats on board but haven't been having much luck. I was thinking given you're doing the same thing we could pool resources and work on it together."
"Agreed. You may benefit from our superior knowledge of the area."
Mentally rolling her eyes the Betazoid flicked through what they had so far to find a place to start. *Just remember you know what you're talking about, he's no higher up than you are no matter what he says or thinks.* "So far our sensors have picked up several unusual trails that we're trying to investigate possible causes of..."

At the moment Fox could do little on the bridge. He looked at Sonak and asked for permission to leave the bridge. He thought to pay a little visit to several science departments. Sonak granted his request. As he left his station immediately another science officer walked to it to take his place.
Fox walked to the turbo lift. As he walked in he said "Deck 4" Not much later the lift stopped at the ordered deck and he stepped out of it. After a little walk he arrived at Astrometrics. Fox looked for the astrometrics chief as he walking in. He saw he sat behind a desk working at a console.
"How's everything going here?" he asked. The chief looked up and nodded shortly "Everything is running fine." Fox gave a little smile "Good". "However...." the chief continued. "Yes?" Fox replied. "I know we're on a very important mission, but do you think we can have 3 hours on the lateral sensor arrays? It's been long since any ship has been here and we like to update the charts."
Fox immediately tabbed his comm-badge. "Fox to Byrne." It kept quiet for a little while {Must be going on something.} Fox thought. Then Byrne replied. "Yes Commander?" Immediately Fox explained the request from atrometrics. It became a little quiet again. "Ok, they can have 3 hours." Logan responded.

Trey made his way to the C.O.O station witch he made his temporary posting until the ship was assign one. He was asked by commodore sonak to look into the disappearance/abduction of lieutenant tovan. Trey and tovan did not get along well with each other but he would be dammed if he let a member of this ship’s crew go missing on his watch. Maverick started to review on the missing navigator’s movements on ship before his disappearance. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. So what would cause him to attack a fellow crew man, trey thought to him self, could he have been mentally strained? If so why didn’t he seek help? And how could he have known there was a ship at the coordinates that he set into the transporters. Could someone have made a telepathic link with him? Each question became more and more puzzling. Trey decided to do a more intensive scan of the area. His scanners did pick up a decaying warp trail witch headed in the direction of a nebula about 5.5 light years away but he was still unable to tell what type of ship it was. Trey leaned back in his seat, the gears in his head working overtime. He leaned forward again and began a long range scan of the nebula. All readings came back nominal there didn’t seem to be any thing out of the ordinary going within the nebula. At this range there scanners would not be able to pick up any life sighs, in order for that to happen they would have to get closer a lot closer and with the Vesuvius moving in the opposite the likelihood of that happening was almost nil.
Trey swivelled his chair in the direction of his commanding officer and before he could utter a work word she steered at him and asked
“Have you found some thing?”
“I would like to think so ma’am, I detected an unidentified decaying warp trail heading in the direction of a nebula 5.5 light years to our six”
“And you would like to take a shuttle craft out to investigate” said sonak finishing his sentence.
“Well… um… yes ma’am”
Commodore sonak leaned back in her seat contemplating the young marine captain’s request
“Commodore you aren’t truly thinking of letting him go out there are you?” came 1st officer Logan’s voice “I don’t think the romulans would take kindly to one of our shuttles flying through there space” added Logan
“So what are you saying? We shouldn’t check it out?” replied trey with a hint of irritation in his voice
“No that’s not what am saying, what am suggesting is that we get permission 1st”
Sonak seemed to nod in agreement with Logan’s suggestion.
“I will be in my ready room negotiating terms which may allow us to investigate maverick’s finds
