***Command Staff Conference Room*** **2210 Hours** “As you can see, duty calls at any hour.” Zhukarak himself wasn’t sure if he was trying to make a light attempt at humor or not. As a marine officer he knew this statement to be so very true. Zhukarak activated the view screen as he began to give his briefing.
“We have orders that will take us to a potentially new Federation member. We will be traveling to the Ethelon Star System of which two planets are colonized, Ethelon III and IV. Ethelon IV is the Capital planet. To give you a quick history on this system…it is a technological anomaly. This species has actually developed and it seems perfected transporter technology before developing warp technology, or even rocket-based technology. As such, Ethelon IV has built a complicated array of transporter relay nodes that has allowed them to place mining facilities on a number of rich asteroids and colonize Ethelon III. They have no traditional interplanetary spacecraft and are not capable of interstellar travel.”
Zhukarak let this sink in for a moment. He could sense the awe and the ‘how could this be’ emotions on their expressions. He went ahead to try to explain what he had just learned about these aliens. He pushed a button on the console in front of him, which activated the view screen to show the alien species in question.
“As you can see, we are dealing with the basic humanoid…two arms, two legs, with the exception that they are taller than humans on average, about 2.5 meters. Typically grey skinned with a very slight and skinny build. Starfleet xenobiology reports suggest that this might explain their lack of rocket technology. Their bodies seem too fragile to survive the rigors of being strapped onto a big rocket and whipped into space.”
The faces around the room began to comprehend and accept the situation.
“Back to their transporter technology. This transporter array and related nodes are under the complete control of the planetary government. There is no private enterprise on the planet that has access to transporter technology. Because the planet has had transporters for many generations, it is a highly sought after research and they actually host a training facility for off-worlders. As a result, they have developed quite an enterprise as there are a large number of ships coming and going from this system.”
Zhukarak took another short break, he wasn’t ready for questions yet and they knew it. He continued on.
“The Ethelonians have applied for membership with the Federation. They feel that they could use the protection of the Federation as their technology is becoming more wide-spread and they do fear the worst. This is where we come in. The USS Jefferson is being sent to establish relations. We are being sent with medical supplies for them. It seems that they are consuming more than they can produce or even trade for. In return we will gain some knowledge and insight to this transporter technology, to include an upgrade to our systems if feasible. Now, any questions?”

jeff rubbed his eyes and Looked that his screen.
" What information do we have from the council? This is a messy gray area in terms of the prime directive. Are we allowed to directly interact?" Jeff shook his head. <Zhuk>
"And if we do receive an upgrade, I'm gonna need some extra tools transferred from starbase. Dock Won't be happy, but any experienced field officers know that duty can call... Yeah."
Jeff looked around. The ship was ready, a few things here and that, but mostly ready for anything. "I'll also need additional personell. Is there Any chance of that?"

Raleva peered at the new creatures thoughtfully and considered when Commander Pudlo mentioned the prime directive.
"Well, not necessarily," She replied, "Just because they have taken a different route to interstellar travel does not make them an undeveloped culture. Besides, they asked us to help them and requested entrance into the Federation."
"Just how fragile are they? And, why would they be so deprived of medical supplies ... the read out here," she continued, motioning to her console and the general overview of the planet's resources and type, "claims that the soil of their planet is not being replenished with the right nutrients ... that doesn't have something to do with their technology does it? Or do we not have enough information yet?"

Scene: Bridge, Deck 1, USS Jefferson
Matt knew that the orders he was about to give would cause many of the crew members of the Jefferson to moan and groan, but it couldn't be helped. At the very moment Colonel Hrisvalar was reading the new mission orders command had just sent them. He would read them shortly, but first he would have to do as he was told.
He waited to inform the crew about the call back order. He wanted to give them as much time as possible. He contacted the repair crews and informed that they needed to finish major work in three hours. Matt was confident that Jefferson personal would be able to deal with the minor problems that might be left. To his knowledge the only major problem had to do with the plasma transfer conduits, as long as they were done he was happy.
Matt did not contact Assailant's quartermaster because he had made sure to resupply the ship almost immediately after he had arrived from Conqueror. That also reminded him about the Colonel's new yacht. He had yet to tell him about it and the command staff meeting would be the a good place to let him know. After taking an incredible long time reading the mission report, Matt knew that he could no longer postpone the inevitable.
=^=Commander Reynolds to all Jefferson personal. You are to report back to the ship. R&R has sadly come to an end, we will depart in a few hours. Senior staff meeting at 2200 hours=^=
Matt imagined the moans and groans of a few crew members. He knew that Lt. Shelby down in the science lab had been really looking forward to the time off. ~Hopefully he got a lot of rest~ Matt thought as he reread the mission parameters.
Scene: Conference Room, Deck 1, USS Jefferson
Matt sat down in his seat having already placed the appropriate pads on the table. He was sure that Kristin would be very interested in this mission. She had already told him how bored she had become with Starfleet Federation technology. It could be a tedious job sometimes Kristin had said. ~Well she will have her hands full this time~ Matt thought as he the rest of the senior staff walked in.
"Before we start, I would like to welcome Acting Ensign Richard Rekab. He's our new Helms officer and trust me he can even give Alex a run for his money," Matt said introducing the newest member of the command staff.
"Also before I forget, I would like to inform our dear Colonel and new Squadron Commander," Matt said making sure to mention his recent promotion," that I and a few engineers have constructed a new Captain's yacht. I have been working on it for a while now, and since Admiral Lin took the temporary one I thought it appropiate to just give him the best one out there."
<Tag Zhuk and everyone else>
The introductions and hellos over Zhuk begun the meeting. Matt paid close attention to what Zhuk had to say. The version that he had would most likely be less detailed than the one sent to Zhuk. He didn't have to wait long to have his suspicions confirmed. He knew that the Ethelonians wanted membership into the Federation and they had impressive transporter technology, but he didn't know that they had know interstellar ships. He just assumed that a civilization that could transport people and materials huge distances had ships.
"What information do we have from the council? This is a messy gray area in terms of the prime directive. Are we allowed to directly interact?" Jeff shook his head.
"Well, not necessarily," She replied, "Just because they have taken a different route to interstellar travel does not make them an undeveloped culture. Besides, they asked us to help them and requested entrance into the Federation."
"Well I have to agree with Jeff on this one," Matt said," the Prime Directive clearly states that a First Contact must be only with a warp capable civilization. Though I see why there could be an exception concerning the Ethelonians. They did in fact contact us first."
"And if we do receive an upgrade, I'm gonna need some extra tools transferred from starbase. Dock Won't be happy, but any experienced field officers know that duty can call... Yeah. I'll also need additional personnel. Is there any chance of that?"
"I have already taken care of that," Matt said smiling. After reading the possibility of an upgrade he had contacted the dock-master who as Jeff had said wasn't very happy. In fact, Matt had done this to the quartermaster before when Admiral Loskene was the commanding officer of the ship. It had been funny then and it was still funny now. "As for the additional personal, that will be a bit trickier. Five engineers were transferred off the Jefferson, but we did receive about a dozen science and engineering crew members. They are fresh off the academy and I was told not to expect many in the upcoming months either. The situation with the Klingons and Tholians has forced realignment of personal."
"It seems they have put there entire attention to their transporter technology and in the process neglected other fields of science," Matt said," a mix of some powerful fertilizer would replenish the soil, but we need to do some scans of the planet first. The planet seems to closely resemble 18th century technology in the fields of medicine, agriculture, and astronomy. This also brings up another question. Are we ready to give these people these technologies for theirs? Then again like Revela said it could all be due to their transporter technology."

Unfortunately, Daran didn't have the technical know how to determine how difficult it was to develop transporter technology before warp drive or rockets, but there were some things that he was qualified to comment on.
He waited until there was a brief opening in the conversation. "The information that this briefing is based on is pretty old" Daran said. "There was a Federation survey team through the system, but it was over 100 years ago. They didn't find any evidence of warp technology at the time, so they did a fast scan and left, as per the Prime Directive." Daran waited as the senior staff checked the time references before continuing.
"Since then, it looks like they have been in contact with a number of warp capable races, including the Ferengi, Orions and Pakleds. None of those races are particularly friendly with the Federation, which is probably why we've never heard of the Ethelonians before now. Chances are those races would have traded anything to get more advanced transporter technology, so I doubt that they are still 18th century equivalent for medicine, agriculture, and astronomy. Perhaps they have traded for more alien technology than they can handle" Daran concluded.
"I have no opinion yet as far as their physiology goes. The scan the survey team did was the best that could be done at the time and not much data was collected on the Ethelonians themselves. Because of the interference of other space faring races, we should probably find out what's actually there before we assume this material is correct" the CMO concluded.

Raleva sat back and listened to the discussion and nodded thoughtfully as her questions were answered to some effect. This was certainly going to be an interesting mission to say the least. She pinched the bridge of her nose and for the billionth time considered what she and Nathan had discussed and for the billionth time she regretted how she'd handled it. Now, she had a splitting headache but couldn't force herself to go to sickbay.
She came back into the conversation as Daran was wrapping up.
"I have no opinion yet as far as their physiology goes. The scan the survey team did was the best that could be done at the time and not much data was collected on the Ethelonians themselves. Because of the interference of other space faring races, we should probably find out what's actually there before we assume this material is correct" the CMO concluded.
"Yes, I agree," Raleva replied putting her hand back down on the console.

After listening to everyone's ideas, Grace knew her main capacity would be face to face contact with the Colonal. Contacting other species has always been her favorite thing to do. Grace knew she would be called upon to study up on the Ethelonians as much as the Federation knew about them.
~Transporter technology! Scrambling a persons atoms all over the galaxy. Wonderful! Hopefully Star Fleet won't decide to use it to replace star ships.~ Grace thought.

"what kind of weaponry do they have? I'm assuming if they are asking for help they are not equipped to deal with any problems they may encounter." Cyle looked around momentarily, waiting for an answer.

"I'm not saying they cant handle themselves, but do you think we would be able to trade technologies if need be?"

Daran examined the briefing material in response to Cyle's question. "Sorry Major. It doesn't really say here. When the Federation surveyors passed through 100 years ago, they had a basic 18th century technology. There's no telling what they've researched or traded for in that time. They may still be using gunpowder, or have a type XX planetary phaser array."
Cyle nodded and said. "I'm not saying they can't handle themselves, but do you think we would be able to trade technologies if need be?"
Daran shrugged. "Perhaps we can trade with them. We could certainly invite their researchers aboard and look at our transporter systems. Perhaps they would be willing to suggest improvements in exchange for other information, perhaps medical research or terraforming technology. I guess that there's no way to know until we get there."

Meanwhile in sickbay:
Nathan was at the end of his senses; ever since Raleva had stormed out of Ten Forward he had been unable to get a hold of her to explain what he'd meant. He had only been trying to help really. Unconsciously his hand went to the cheek that she'd struck him on and even then he still felt the sting of it. This had been a few days ago now, and he couldn't get it out of his mind.
Young Freddy had asked him, rather innocently, what had happened and Nathan hadn't explained it to his son just yet. How was he to explain a rather indecent proposal to a four-year old? At least that was what it felt like now, since Raleva had reacted so strongly and negatively towards it. It hadn't even been a proposal, he'd never had the chance to finish what he had to say at that.
Daran had gone to the mission briefing, one Nathan felt he didn't belong as assistant CMO. Instead, he would keep an eye on sickbay's proceedings and make certain stocks were filled. His young chief nurse in the women's ward approached him, pulling him out of his thoughts. "Nathan are you all right?" Hannah asked as she handed him a steaming cup of tea.
Grateful for the gesture, Nathan accepted the cup and carefully sipped the hot liquid. "Ah, starmint tea," he smiled, "thank you Hannah I am fine."
"You don't look it," Hannah countered as she sat on the edge of his desk, "what's on your mind?" And Nathan told her, in detail, what had happened. Hannah laughed heartily. "Oh no, you didn't!" she laughed, "please, do say you didn't!"
"I'm afraid I did, and I haven't seen her since," he answered miserably.
"Nathan dear, I never expected that from you. She'll come about, trust me. Women are forgiving creatures...well most of us anyway. Just be patient."
"I'll just have to be," Nathan sighed as he returned to staring at his computer screen, "but thank you for your concern Hannah. I appreciate it."
"So you say," Hannah smiled, "I'll be checking on young Damian in the children's ward. The boy was brought in this morning, fell off a climbing rack on the holodeck. Teacher didn't pay much attention to the boy's antics. That should teach them I suppose." With a final encouraging smile, she disappeared from the office.

Jeff nodded. "We should keep the option open about trading tech. If their Transporters are as good as you say, we may be able to offer inertial dampers or something so they can go into space themselves- Orbital surveys and such. Sensors too, and probes. I'm hesitant on weapons until they're Federation members, but who knows?"
Jeff paused, then added, "by the way, schedule an equipment reconstruction drill for 0530 hours. those graduates are going to need to know how to put these things together."

Raleva's head bounced up a few inches as she turned toward Commander Pudlo.
"I would rather have more indepth intelligence before we allow these people onboard, I also suggest that our engineers have a look at their equipment before we show them our's ... we have some of the best engineers in the galaxy and I daresay they will be able to judge whether or not our systems can be upgraded or even if an upgrade would be worth the extra work," she said plainly, "I also feel we should keep the upper hand, simply because their ultimate intentions are not exactly obvious and they have ties to organizations and cultures that are currently at odds with the Federation. We should not open ourselves up to espionage simply because they have something that we may find desirable."
Suddenly, it dawned on Raleva that she wasn't the security or tactical officer. She paused and smiled when she realized everyone was staring at her.
"Well ... someone has to think about these things, don't they?" she asked with only a hint of a smile, "I am going to be running extensive scans as soon as we enter the system. I hope to have a fairly good scientific frame of reference available for you, Captain, before we start negotiations. In fact, it's my first order of business."

"Now wait a minute- I didn't say we would be giving it to them right away. We should leave the option open, that's all." Jeff Responded quickly. "I just want us to be ready. Speaking of ready, are all of the Helm and Navigation folks oriented on the new consoles we put in? I haven't installed the holo-emitters to allow you to configure your own panel yet, so they're all in default, except for The Captain's Chair. And my station. I can't stand the layout they put standard. no logical arrangement." he paused. "But that's off topic. Those are configurable now. Because if people can't work their consoles..." Jeff Trailed off and rapped his ring on the table and leaned back in his chair with his arms behind his head.

***Command Staff Conference Room*** **2227 Hours** “I realize everyone’s apprehensions.” Zhukarak finally answered after everyone had the chance to voice their concerns.
The Prime Directive is directed at civilizations that have absolutely no knowledge and no exposure to warp technology. This is not the case here. The Ethelonians have the knowledge and have been exposed to it by other civilizations. They just haven’t implemented it into their own culture as this transporter technology is their main mode of transportation.”
Zhukarak let this sink in for a moment, watching the faces around the table come to an understanding, much as he did when he had the very same question before he delved into the fine print of the explanation of the Prime Directive.
“We are on a ‘Goodwill’ mission. Therefore I have no intentions of giving the Ethelonians any reason that we may be suspicious of them. As we have away teams down on their planet looking at their technology, they will be allowed to board the Jefferson and view ours. This is not to say that they are to be left alone and they will only have access to non-critical equipment.”
Everyone seemed to be in agreement on that matter.
“As far as weapons, we will assume that they have the latest in technology. After all, they have had ample opportunity to trade up for it. Again, we will not go there causing them to become alarmed. They have approached the Federation for help and offered trade in technology in return. In the very least we are ambassadors and will have to act accordingly…with open arms of friendship.”
Everyone seemed to accept these words, even if they didn’t like it much.
“Good, proceed with your duties then and perform all necessary drills for your sections that you feel are necessary, dismissed.”

Daran stepped out of the conference room and headed for the closest turbolift, tapping his communicator as he walked. "Dr. Keller to all medical staff. Please meet me in Sickbay in 10 minutes."
The lift quickly whisked him to Sickbay and he walked in the door. A few of the staff were already present and looked at him expectantly. "We'll just wait a few minutes until everyone shows up" Daran said as he passed through the room on his way to his office.
Once there, he activated his console and spent a few minutes uploading what little medical data there was with regards to the Ethelonians, put it into a briefing format then went back out to the main area. In the meantime, his staff had all arrived and were waiting patiently. Dr. van Breughel appeared to be unusually unhappy, but Daran had to put that aside for now.
"Thank you for coming everyone. We have received new mission orders. The Jefferson is being sent to Ethelon III, which is applying for Federation membership. The planet is unusual in that it's inhabitants have developed transporter technology before more conventional rocket, impulse or warp drives." That caused a bit of a stir, and the CMO waited until they settled again before he went on.
"Here is an archive picture of an Ethelonian that was picked up by Federation scan about 100 years ago." Daran pulled up a slide with the member of that race, along with a human, Klingon and Andorian for perspective. "As you can see, the race has an everage height of about 2.5 metres, or over 8 feet, but are physically fairly fragile. There is also some evidence of a lingering, long term illness among many of the inhabitants, but I have no data as to cause, symptoms or cure. We may be asked to diagnose and treat this illness while we're there. I also have no information as to how advanced they are in medical technology."
Petty Officer 1st Class Kalan Ajus raiser her hand, and Daran nodded at her in response. The CMO had only spoken to the PO once or twice since he had arrived aboard ship, but had reviewed her service file. She was human/Betazoid and was probably the best diagnostician aboard ship, but seemed to be a bit of a recluse. Daran didn't know why. If the Jefferson were asked to examine this disease, she would be the primary researcher. "Will we be able to physically examine the Ethelonians if they do want us to help?"
"Probably, although I don't really know right now, Kalan" Daran replied. "The Federation scans done during the survey turned up no pathogens that might affect other species, and we know that warp capable ships have already visited the planet and left with no ill effects. But there's no telling what's going on there right now." Daran looked around. "Any other questions?'

Raleva strolled out of the meeting room and paused en route to her quarters. They weren't likely to be within intensive scanner range for several hours. She stopped and rubbed her temples and considered going to sickbay. It was an epic battle ... the pain in her head versus her own desire to avoid a confrontation with Nathan. The pain won out ... as pain has a tendency to do when opposed by nothing but sheer embarrassment. She turned on her heel and started toward sickbay.
This was going to be unusual and throughly awkward ... but alas, what can't be cured must be endured. As she made her way to the sickbay ... she considered the idea of being a mother. She'd considered it before but this time she heard every reason why she shouldn't have a child chiming out in her mind. It was almost painful ... and a bit debilitating and also discouraging.
With the throbbing of a brain that seemed so much larger than her skull crowding her thoughts, she side stepped a few ensigns and heard a strange little lullaby at the back of her mind starting to chant:
Hush now baby, baby don't you cry Mama's gonna make all of your Nightmares come true
Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you Mama's gonna keep you right here Under her wing
she won't let you fly but she might let you sing Mama will keep baby cosy and warm Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe Ooooh Babe But first, Mama's gonna help build the wall ...
She turned the corner and stared at the sickbay doors. The idea of motherhood still fresh in her aching mind. She sighed.
"Time to face the music ... " she murmured to herself.
Raleva squared her shoulders and marched into sickbay ... right in the middle of a meeting. Most of the assembled peoples turned to look at her and somewhere on the far side of the room, Nathan's eyes darted toward her. She blanched as she realized the imprint of her hand was still just slightly visible on the side of his face. However, before she could dart back out the door the meeting was adjourned and Nathan was headed toward her.

Jeff smiled. it wasn't the type of smile you wanted to see, especially if you were new to the engineering section. Jeff was happily dismantling the impulse assemblies. And the Backups. And the control circuits. It could all be routed though the 3rd level emergency systems, but if he and a few assistants could take it apart, the entire engineering department should be able to put it back together.
That was the plan at least. It would be difficult with the computers shut off. And the 'damaged' warp circuitry should add an interesting dimension to it. No pressure suits today, but it might be handy to have them practice that sometime....
As he finished up, he went to his office and walked into the corner where he had installed a sonic shower a few weeks back and cut it on for a minute while leaning against the wall.
Well, here we go again. he thought, finally getting a chance to think. I'm apprehensive about this one though. If they were only using very basic technology the last time a survey went past them- and a fairly recent one too- they should not have developed Warp capable technology by now, much less transporters. Societies may develop differently, but usually technology evolves at around the same rate... And if their transporter tech is more advanced then ours, it's well... I don't' know. An outside force, could have been tampering with their development. A ship could have crashed there. There are just so many questions and so few answers...
Then the day crew arrived for the drill, tearing him from his thoughts. This would be very informative.

"The Federation scans done during the survey turned up no pathogens that might affect other species, and we know that warp capable ships have already visited the planet and left with no ill effects. But there's no telling what's going on there right now." Daran looked around. "Any other questions?'
"We could beam down and ask permission to examine them in their own environment," Nathan suggested, "if we were able to take a few blood samples, we could culture cells under different circumstances, run tests on their serum and plasma and run DNA analysis according to old fashioned PCR methods." His mentioning of 21st century medical testing methods drew a few blank looks from younger staff but he could see Daran understood what he was aiming at. "Perhaps our technology is to advanced as opposed to not being advanced enough to diagnose them," he commented. "When will we be able to beam down?"
(Daran)
While Daran concluded their briefing, Nathan spotted Raleva walking into sickbay though when their gazes met she seemed about to bolt for the door. "Doctor please excuse me," he said softly, tapping Daran on the arm to get his attention, then nodded towards Raleva. "Personal issue to resolve," he murmured, then beelined for the Betazoid. "Lieutenant wait," he called her, blocking her exit. He guided her towards the privacy of his make-shift office and sat her down in a seat. "You have been avoiding me," he said softly, "before I had the chance to apologize you stormed out of Ten Forward. I realize I may have said something that offended you, but I intended no offense. I was not about to make an indecent proposal to you, you must believe me."
He rubbed his cheek with a rueful smile. "You do have a good right punch by the way," he chuckled, "it still stings somewhat. I left it untreated to remind me to be more careful when speaking to women about sensitive subjects."

Raleva sighed as Nathan tugged her away to his little nook. When he began apologizing she blushed.
"Nathan, I should be the one apologizing," she said, almost cutting him off, "I overreacted because ... well ... the subject matter is one that ... er ... it bothers me a bit. My mother and grandmother have spent ages pressuring me to marry and have children and I ... I am not sure I would be a very good mother."

"That's not really what I mean ... I fear that I would not be able to ... let a child grow," she continued, gesturing with her hands so she didn't have to say everything that she wished to say, "I once loved two gerbils to death ... and I kinda ... well, I worry about being too attached to my child. I worry I would spoil them, smother them ... and what kind of child comes from a relationship like that? One that cannot or will not care for itself or one that will resent me ... much like my own mother resents my grandmother ... and that ... that is not an option. I would rather never have children than raise a child that hates me ... "
It wasn't until it was all out that Raleva realized that she hadn't stopped to take a breath in what felt like half an hour. She sucked in some air and leaned back against the wall, just slightly miserable. She peered back at Nathan and smiled. He was reeling ... this was not his usual job ... in fact ... it was her usual job, which is probably why it took her such considerable effort to get it all out. Few people guard their secrets as fiercely as a councilor ... it was a survival thing. Weakness is not something people like to see when they are spilling their guts ... they want someone that can handle anything they have to say. Alas, it appeared that Raleva was not as good at that as she'd previously thought.

Nathan watched her get up and restlessly pace his makeshift office, and he didn't stop her. Instead he listened to her rant in silence, but the word stream just kept coming and coming and he couldn't get a word in. At last, he sat reeling as he tried to keep up with her.
"You will make a fine mother Raleva," he assured her, when he finally could get a word in. "There are a lot of single mothers out there in the Federation, all who are doing just fine. And you have the advantage that you live on a starship, with plenty of people available to help you raise your child."
This time, he fell silent for a longer period, waiting for her to respond to that. When she didn't, he took a deep breath and steeled himself against any reaction she might give. "If you would consider my...proposal...you would not have to worry about being a single mother. We could make...proper arrangements?"

***Bridge*** **0910 Hours** “How long until we arrive?” Zhukarak asked of his helm officer.
“Twenty-three hours and seventeen minutes at present speed, sir.”
Zhukarak turned to see who was at the helm and was surprised that it wasn’t the new Acting Ensign Rekab, instead it was Ensign Chen. Zhukarak hadn’t realized that Rekab had excused himself from the bridge, maybe he wasn’t feeling well. He’d check with Doctor Keller on that later. Grace seemed to be a little preoccupied as well, her chair was also empty.
Zhukarak read over most of the section reports. He was happy to see the drills were having a positive affect in getting everyone ready, or in making improvements where needed. Doctor Keller was proceeding with his study of improving nanites for severe trauma victims, and Commander Pudlo was making his usual improvements in engineering.
Zhukarak suddenly recalled some unfinished business. Zhuk looked over at Matt to get his attention. “Join me in my Ready Room.” They both rose to head in that direction.
***Captain's Ready Room*** **0913 Hours**
Matt went ahead and seated himself in one of the comfortable lounge chairs as Zhuk went to the replicator. “Can I interest you in some Andorian tea?”
<Matt>
Zhuk brought over Matt’s request and seated himself in the other chair. “I have been doing some research since your memo about the naming of the Captain’s Yacht. Specifically I researched the naming of the USS Jefferson. I must say, this Thomas Jefferson fellow was quite a remarkable man. I can see why he stands out in your human history.”
<Matt>
“This brings me to the naming of the yacht. I believe the ‘Monticello’ would be appropriate. This was the home of residence for Mr. Jefferson, and I found the meaning or translation of this word to be quite interesting. It means little mountain. What do you think?”

The CMO quickly digested Nathan's point. Perhaps he was on to something. "That sounds like a good idea Nathan, but I think that our first round of testing should be done as remotely as possible. Once we're in range, I think that we should get them to send us full medical workups from some patients who has been affected. We can get Kalan to assess them to see if there is any risk in humans beaming down."
Daran paused briefly as he thought, then went on. "We should also do a full bio sweep using the ships sensors to see if anything can be picked up that way. We can probably get all that done before we enter orbit, then decide if it's a good idea to beam down."
Nathan nodded in reply, and Daran looked around the room for other questions, but at that point the door to Sickbay swished open and Raleva walked through. Everyone stared at her until Daran said "Fine, let's get started. Kalan, I want you and a bio team to inspect the auxilliary science labs on Deck 16. I think that we'll use them for this mission. Make sure everything is operating within normal parameters and get Engineering to fix anything that isn't. Dismissed."

Scene: Bridge, Deck 1, USS Jefferson
The USS Jefferson was currently in route to Ethelon IV and the crew was currently hard at work. Since the senior staff late last night every department had been running drills and efficency test. Unbeknown to them, Matt was also running an efficency performance on the entire ship. He was excatic to know that the ship and crew were currently running at 99.23% efficeny, the highest ever. He would need to make sure to commend them on there hard work once again.
Sensing that he would be needed on the bridge, Matt decided to perform his duties from his center chair. He had just finished speaking to the civilan director of the ship's upgraded research facility. That meant that only engineering was left, but Matt was hesitant. He had been informed by an engineer that Jeff was doing his usual improvements to the engine room. Matt knew from first hand experience that you don't mess with Jeff when he's working on the engine.
“Join me in my Ready Room.” They both rose to head in that direction.
Matt rose to his feet and followed his commanding officer into his ready room. Before his current tenure as first officer, Matt hated entering the ready room. It usually meant that he had done something wrong or was about to get punished.
“Can I interest you in some Andorian tea?”
"That will be acceptable," Matt said as he sat down. He had yet to try Andorian tea, but he had heard good things about it. Matt was ready and willing to try new things, but food and beverages were another thing.
“I have been doing some research since your memo about the naming of the Captain’s Yacht. Specifically I researched the naming of the USS Jefferson. I must say, this Thomas Jefferson fellow was quite a remarkable man. I can see why he stands out in your human history.”
"Yes, Thomas Jefferson paved the way for the United States," Matt said," his work expired countless of people."
“This brings me to the naming of the yacht. I believe the ‘Monticello’ would be appropriate. This was the home of residence for Mr. Jefferson, and I found the meaning or translation of this word to be quite interesting. It means little mountain. What do you think?”
"Monticello is a perfect name for the ship," Matt responded," I've visited the historical estate as a child and it's majestic. Almost as majestic as this ship."
Matt was pleased to know that Zhuk had chosen to honor the ship in naming his personal shuttlecraft. Matt thought that he would have chosen his firelizard's name. "Well sir, if you want I can finish registering your shuttle or I can leave that honor to you."

Raleva glared at Nathan from across the room.
"Nathan, what arrangement could we have? You are in a relationship ... and even if you weren't ... Nathan, you and I both know that any arrangements we could come up with would ultimately end badly," she replied finally, "I ... I am not sure that I am ready for a child, Nathan."

"Nathan, I appreciate what you're offering me, but I am just not ready ... "
She heard the words leaving her lips, but didn't remember saying them. However, it was how she felt.
"In all honesty," she continued after a long pause with a hint of a smile on her worn and tired face, "you are a great father ... and ... in the words of my grandmother, 'you have the perfect genes'."
She laughed at his expression and sighed.

Nathan remained silent, seeing that she wasn't finished talking just yet. He felt as though he'd been slapped in the face again as her words stung.

Nathan got up from his seat and walked around his desk, reaching out and pulling Raleva to her feet. She stood a good head shorter than him. "I doubt I have the perfect genes," he answered as he held her hands, "and I am very certain you'd make a very good mother. When you are ready that is." He drew her into a hug while his smile appeared somewhat forced.
"Now, what did I miss at the briefing. Daran gave us a lecture and I gave him something to consider, but is there any challenge in here for you? Anything of scientific interest?"
