Just as she had finished her sentence, Zhuk halted Jeff from leaving. "Commander Pudlo, it seemes we have a project for you."
Jeff came over and Guardian Regarn repeated her previous comment, after which Zhuk gave Jeff the assignment of coming up with either a modified phaser or something entirely different, whatever it took to not harm Admiral Lin."Understood Sir." Jeff replied. "But tell me if this will be ship based, or a hand phaser? Will we need a lot of them, or just one?" * "I think about six hand phaser should suffice. I don't expect us to have more than three seperate away teams. This will give us two per team then.""Right. I'll get to work on it. I'll also work on a few other options for you. " Jeff left for engineering. When he arrived, a group of engineers, headed by his assistant were cleaning the impulse exhaust vents. "Mr. Mrak, If you could get somebody to take over for you..." Jeff nodded to him, and Gerry Mrak in turn whispered something in the ear of the ensign working next to him. "What can I do for you?" "come to my office with all the data on Trill symbionts you can find. And all the phaser designs you've come up with. Actually, and defense mechanism that you've been tinkering with." "You bring your toys, Will bring mine" the Lieutenant smiled. "I get the idea." "We have to find a way to subdue somebody without hurting them. And to do that we will have to do some research and Lab testing." "In that case, why dont we use one of the testing labs?" "Because this is an intensive project." "Then shouldn't we use a lab?" "My office is a more comfortable setting for the initial research. We can move into a lab after that." "Understood." "Good. Now get me the data." Jeff walked into his office and walked over to his safe drawer. puled out a few inventions he thought might be helpful- the sensor belt, he decided, was useless here. The Phaser that Starfleet had used for special ops... a handheld unit that could reach the power of a shipboard phaser.... that could help. A miniature, one time use personal transporter that he had refined to a workable device... well, who could tell? but he doubted it. Just puling the phaser and the PADD with it's plans out, he sat at his desk and darkened the large window and activated the research display there. He started with the current phaser configuration when Mrak walked in. *OOC: Edited by Zhukarak!

Stuart listened to Doctor Keller's suggestion of checking with any medical files that may still be located on Rutia for the Admiral.
"You might want to check with the Trill Defence Force also, seeing that Loran was still in active service at that time. Any medical condition would be noted in her official medical records that they may have."
Stuart was rereading what little he had on Magellan's files. He was slowly becoming tired and caught himself dozing off at times.
~Stuart...why did you leave me?~
Stuart shook his head, startled at what he had just heard. Then he realized that somehow T'Val was reaching for him. It was a revelation that their bond had grown this strong in order for her to reach him this far. He knew that she was distraught, but he hoped that under the care of Ambassador Tedak she would be alright.
Shortly thereafter, Doctor van Breughel showed up. His incessent questioning of Admiral Lin's condition, and why he hadn't been relieved sooner rather than later, and why he was allowed to take so many doses, and...and...and...he just wouldn't stop.
"DOCTOR!!! Please!"
Everyone who was within hearing distance, which was quite far, froze at Stuart's outburst. Stuart was a little embarrassed.
"I'm sorry, I'm just a little stressed. You will have to believe me when I say that we did everything we felt we needed to do at the time. Now if you would help us concentrate on the future, and not so much on the past, that would be more helpful. You've mentioned surpressing the other hosts and some type of a ceremony. Maybe Guardian Regarn can help us with that information. Care to join me?"

Daran nodded at Mercy's suggestion to follow up with the Trill Defence force. He had finally established a link to the Rutian medical database. The planet still seemed interested in joining the Federation, and was willing to allow access to records regarding off world personel. He downloaded everything that they had regarding the Loran host.
Just then, Nathan entered the office and started questioning Dr. Mercy again with regards to Admiral Lin's isoboromine medication. He could see that Stuart was getting upset, but before Daran could interrupt, Stuart exploded with frustration.
There was silence in Sickbay once the Commander was done. Nathan had gone dead white.
Calmer, but still visibly unhappy, Stuart then offered Nathan a trip to see the Guardian to see if she had any more information.

After Cyle had left captian potter's office, he returned to his office, were he noticed had had received a message, from Commander Reynolds. After reading the message, Cyle stood up and got a glass of water from his replicator. Putting the glass on his desk, he left his office, and went in search of Matt Reynolds.
Cyle entered the bridge and looked around, spotting the commander , he walked over to his side. "Commander, you wished to speak with me?" Cyle said as he stood waiting for a reply.

Nathan felt the blood drain from his face as Mercy exploded at him, and he stood mutely watching the other doctors, waiting for them to continue. Slowly he expelled the breath he'd been holding, not even realising he'd done so.
Then, to his utter surprise, the younger doctor offered him to tag along and see the Trill woman. He nodded in silence, not even trusting his own voice right now.
He felt blood slowly flush back into his cheeks, somehow feeling quite embarassed. He knew of himself that he could get too enthusiastic in asking questions, when he thought he was on to something. And apparently, this time he'd been a little off with his hunch. "I must apologise," he murmured when they walked back out of sickbay. However, it did seem his ceremony idea might not be such a bad one.
"Know more about this ceremony?" he asked carefully as they walked, not wanting to further test Mercy's apparent foul mood. "I would think she should, since she's a guardian. I just can't remember the name of this ceremony, that's quite annoying. I've read about Jadzia Dax once having gone through it, and her friend Odo was inhibited by Curzon Daz, who actually didn't want to leave Odo's body in the end."

They had reached the hallways of the ship, in search of the Trill guardian when Doctor van Breughel apologized once more, and then continued on with the ceremony idea. It was then that Stuart had realized his weakness as a medical officer...as a chief medical officer.
He had prided himself becoming proficient in his emergency medical care of many species as an EMT in San Francisco. His prior knowledge of this carried over well once he had become a doctor in Starfleet. He didn't really have a problem treating most basic injuries, wounds, or even rare diseases. What Stuart was lacking was the cultural knowledge of the various species that he treated. Culture was a big influence in any species.
Many species relied on spiritual healing as religion was a big part of their medical practices. Stuart knew that It was the lack of this knowledge too, that made it hard for him to understand what was happening to T'Val. He turned his thoughts and attention back to Doctor van Breughel.
"Again, allow me to apologize. I know that you were merely trying to help. I'm also dealing with a personal issue, hence my being stressed out a bit."
"I understand." The Jefferson doctor replied, still with a little worry on his face.
"I think your idea has some merit. I can't think of the ceremonial name either, but I'm sure the guardian can help us."
They continued on to Laurana's quarters.

Daran watched the two doctors leave for Laurana's quarters, then shook his head. Nathan was going to be a handful. That kind of inquisitive curiousity was useful in any doctor, scientist or researcher, but you had to remember to turn it off sometimes.
The CMO looked back down at his console. The download from Rutia regarding Loran's medical files was complete and he spent a few minutes examining the results. Everything seemed to be in order.
Daran sighed. There seemed to be nothing to go on. Without anything else to do, the doctor pulled up the results of Loran's scans after the body was returned to the Trill Defence Force. "Computer" Daran said, "run a full comparison of the results of the autopsies of Loran from Rutia and Trill. Report any inconsistencies."
There was a quiet hum as the computer began working. After a moment, the computer spoke. "One major discrepancy noted. Unidentified foreign object found in Loran body quadrant 106.47 from Rutia autopsy. Not present in Trill autopsy. Foreign body found by spectral resonance scan."
Daran frowned. "Show me" he ordered.
The display cut to a readout of Loran's back from the Rutian autopsy, from an area just above her L3 vertebrae. There was a small, rectangular shaped body just below the inferior articular process, almost as if the thing had been hidden there beneath the thick bone. "Computer, pull up the Trill medical scans of the area."
The computer complied and Daran compared the two. The...whatever it was... certainly wasn't in the Trill scan. However, he could see some minor scarring in the area from the Trill scan. That meant that it had actually been there and removed at some point.
Daran sat back and asked "Is there any chance that this thing is the result of the explosion that killed her, then perhaps removed for analysis?"
"Negative" the computer replied. "Reports indicate that Loran was facing the explosion when it occurred. It is not likely that a fragment became lodged in her back as a result of the explosion, nor is there is damage to the surrounding tissue that would account for the location of the object."
"Was there another spectral resonance scan done on Rutia from another angle?" Daran asked.
"Affirmative" the computer replied.
"Can you combine the two to create a three dimensional image of this thing?"
"Affirmative" the computer replied. After a second, the image of the object appeared onscreen. It was about 2 millimetres per side and square, but there wasn't much else to see.
There was something there, but he still didn't have much information. He decided to try another direction. "Computer, is there enough information for a material analysis?"
"Affirmative" the computer replied. "The objects primary constituents are tripolymers, platinum and irridium."
"Those are the materials for an isolinear chip" Daran stated.
"Affirmative" the computer replied.
Daran pulled up the autopsy results from the Rutian doctors. After much searching, he found a short note stating that the object had been noticed in the scan, but not actually found in the body. The doctor had assumed it was a scan error and moved on. Then Daran checked the time index on the scan and the physical autopsy. There had been almost 20 hours between the scan and the autopsy due to high caseload. Plenty of time for someone to remove the object.
But that left the questions of what it was, why it was there and who would know to remove it. Daran couldn't answer any of those. He tapped his communicator. "Lt. Keller to Commander Mercy and Dr. van Breughel. Please report to Sickbay when you can, and bring the Guardian along. I have something to show you."

The little chat with the doctor, left Matt thinking about the Raven and her crew. They were a tough bunch, but they had been through a lot recently. Matt knew that there was nothing he could do for them now, but he promised himself to get in touch with them after the mission ended.
"Computer where are Captain Potter and Major Johnson?" Matt asked before he todl the computer where to go.
"Captain Potter is in his quarters and Major Johnson is in Turbolift 2."
He didn't want to bother Leo at the moment so he just waited for the marine to show up on the bridge.
"Commander, you wished to speak with me?" Cyle said as he stood waiting for a reply.
"Yes I did Major, will you please follow me," Matt said as he walked into the conference room and picked up the padd holding the marine's record. "I understand that you have served with Colonel Hrisvalar before, when he was first officer of the Nevada."
<Tag Cyle>
"Well then I'm pretty sure you know how this ship runs," Matt said," you are here as our CTSO and I expect you to fulfill your duties as such. Captain Leo is our marine officer and has commanding authority over all marines on this ship. Major that means if it comes down to his military recommendation or yours, I will choose his. I don't exactly know your relationship with the Colonel, but you come to me first when it comes to this ship. I will not take it kindly if you try to go over my head because I'm not a marine."
"Now Major please share your thoughts about what I just said," Matt said as he waited for the marine to answer.

Laurana was attempting to catch a few moments of sleep when the door chime went. She rose and pulled on a gown and went to the door. "Yes?" she said before seeing Dr Mercy and Dr Van Breughal "Oh come in. Lights"
"Sorry are we disturbing you?" Stuart asked,
"Hey I m up. What can I do for you gentlemen" she asked offering them a seat on the slate grey couch.
"We ve been doing some research and believe we may have a way to help Magellan" Nathan stated,
"I see..."
"Yes" Nathan continued, "I was reminded of some kind of ritual or ceremony you have that splits hosts, possesses people and the such like."
Laurana loooked at Nathan coolly,
"I have a plan for helping Magellan, it needs some fine tuning but its along those lines"
"Such as what" Stuart asked,
Lauaran paused,
"You have to remember much of Trill society is very private. We only revealed the presence of our symbionts to the general populace of the Federation in the late 2360's. We relish our identity and our personal space. To talk so openly of the core of our society is not something any of us feel comfortable about so forgive me if I m less than forthcoming at times."
"I can understand that" Stuart replied,
"But if it can help Magellan then surely..." Nathan stopped as Stuart gave him a quick glare.
Laurana didnt seem to notice and continued,
"What you refer to is the Zhian'tara . It is a deeply personal experience shared only with the hosts closest friends, its one of the reasons why I insisted Admiral Drew came along."
"What does it involve?" Stuart asked
"Traditionally its a rite of closure allowing a Trill to become one with his previous hosts it involves a form of meditation and some phrases. Medically it is basically a synaptic pattern displacement where a previous hosts personality is layered over anothers. Friends to the host usually volunteer."
"Isnt that dangerous" Nathan asked
"Many things are dangerous to a joined Trill"
"No I meant for the volunteers."
"In this case with Loran being so dominant then I d say yes. The problem is this - the ceremony will seperate the previous hosts and allow Magellan to bond better with Lin. But then what? once the rite ends the hosts return to the symbiont and we would be back at square one again. At the moment its really just a temporary measure and we would need to find volunteers to host Magellans hosts."

OOC for some odd reason i wish you hadn't said that Matt, now i get to explore the inner being of Cyle once more.
IC
"Yes sir I was stationed with him onboard the Nevada" Cyle said, simply and to the point, he had yet to trust, and therefore respect this man, quick to the point answers were all he would give him. Cyle stood still watching Matt, waiting for more to come.
Cyle stared blankly at Commander Reynolds for a moment, 'Who does he think he is?' Cyle asked himself, trying to keep his cool, visibly showing an emotional struggle. Taking a few deeps breaths he allowed himself to calm down slightly "are you.... he started, trying to find "polite" words "are you.....suggesting I don't know how to do MY job? Cyle said, emphasizing a few choice words. "I will assure you, that I am fully capable of doing MY job, if you wish to talk to Colonel Hriskalar and have him explain to you how I run MY shows, feel free. If not, i expect this conversation to done with, I have work to do" Cyle finished his rebuttal and waited to be dismissed.
OOC i think Rebuttal is the right word for that.

"That is the problem Major, you will not run the department as you see fit," Matt said noticing that the inner struggle of the marine," I do not care and do not wish to know how you used to run your department. Here you will do your job correctly and you will report to me, is that understood marine?"
<Tag Cyle>
"One more thing, you will be able to choose your section chiefs as you see fit, but the security teams will be manned by Starfleet personal. If you choose marines to work for you, they will report to," Matt explained his voice still steady. The major's report said that he was confrentational and that he openly questioned command decisions, Matt would put a stop to that now. "If you have any questions, bring them to me and if you have a problem with me, you will have to deal with it."
<Tag Cyle>
"Major your dismissed," Matt said as he stared down the marine and waited for him to leave. The Jefferson was a laid back ship, but everyone was expected to do there work. He wouldn't risk the harmony of the ship because of one strongwilled officer. ~I'm pretty sure he doesn't like me~ Matt thought as he walked back onto the bridge.

Nathan shared a concerned look with Assaillants chief medical officer. "Well I'm certain there would be at least three volunteers for this ceremony, if not four? There are at least three people here now that know the admiral quite well, and one that would see it as his duty to help out."
He glanced from Stuart to Laurana, just as Keller hailed them. "We had better return to sickbay," he suggested, "perhaps Doctor Keller has discovered a way to cure the admiral, or perhaps he found a cause?"
Nathan glanced sharply at Mercy, considering the fact that the younger man seemed ill-tempered, and might not take kindly on the indirect accusation of not having found the cause of the admiral's obvious illness.

Cyle almost threw himself at Commander Reynolds, but managed to hold himself firm, he had to much respect for Zhuk as a marine and a"man" to do anything that may impair his decisions against Cyle.
"I think we, are having problem with miscommunication, I will run my department exactly the way a marine would run any department he is put in charge of, with discipline. Being a starfleet officer, I wouldn't expect you to truly understand how a marine works, so I will attempt to help you understand." Cyle said as he stared at Reynolds
"My personnel will be the most disciplined team you will probably ever see, they will follow my decisions, no one elses. I know my place as a security member, as will they. You will not hear of any reports about a member of my security teams getting into any kind of trouble I can assure you of that" Cyle stared at the commander in front of him, blatantly disregarding any form of rank structure between the two, to Cyle this had become a battle of men, he knew he would either earn the respect of the man in front of him, or lose what ever respect Cyle had towards the man.
"I will make a decision about my section chiefs, after i have had ample time to review my personnel, I hope any changes I feel need to be made will be accepted. If you have any questions, I'm sure you will bring them up to my attention."
Matt had little time to wait as Cyle smartly turned around and left without another word. 'God! I hate him Cyle thought to himself as he walked down the corridor.

As Matt Reynolds returned to the bridge, Drew noticed he appeared a little flush, as if he had just been in an argument of some kind. The First Officer took his usual seat, and started keying in a series of commands into his console, hitting some of the buttons a little harder than was strictly necessary.
Before Drew could ask if anything was wrong, his attention was diverted to the helm, where Lieutenant Pemberton was reporting that they had entered the Ruita system, and were approaching the planet.
Drew did his best to sit perfectly still, and not fidget as Colonel Hrisvalar issued orders to enter orbit around the planet, and made arrangements for an Away Team to be given permission to beam down.
On the viewscreen a Ruitan male was busy trying to understand why a Starfleet vessel had entered orbit, and was clearly unwilling to allow them to beam down. He was making some feeble argument about his own security forces being more than adequate, and that they would have known if a Starfleet Admiral was anywhere on the planet.
Finally though, Colonel Hrisvalar was able to win the argument, impressed, Drew regarded the Marine with a new respect. Clearly his uniform gave a false impression; he was just as capable as any Starfleet Officer would be in this situation.
When Commander Reynolds rose from his chair and started towards the turbolift to leave for the away mission, Drew got him to follow him.
“Admiral?” Colonel Hrisvalar asked, also standing, “where are you going?”
“I am going to join the away mission,” Drew replied.
“I am sorry, but I cannot allow that,” Hrisvalar replied, “we do not know what is down there, your safety cannot be guaranteed.”
“While I appreciate your concern Colonel, I have spent enough time sat on bridges while others put themselves in danger, I am going on that away mission, I am sure either Major Johnson or Captain Potter will be able to provide me with an escort.”
“With all respect Admiral, no you are not,” Hrisvalar replied with steal in his voice, “You said command of this mission was mine, and I am ordering you to remain aboard the Jefferson.”
Drew stared at the Colonel for several moments, either he was incredibly stupid, or much braver than Drew had given him credit for. Finally Drew let out a deep sigh.
“Very well Colonel,” Drew said slowly, retaking his seat, “I’ll stay.”
“I am so glad we have that settled,” Hrisvalar replied, retaking his seat also, then turning his attention to Matt, who had been standing silently watching the argument he said, “Good luck Commander.”

Grace had run in to Cyle as he was exiting the turbolift. She picked up on his mood immediately "Hello, Cyle! Want to talk about it?"
"Oh! Hello Grace. You sense I am agitated?"
"Not really sensed, your actions are displaying your mood quite well. I haven't seen you like this since the first time I met you. Even though we haven't seen each other in a while, I still call you my friend and I am always willing to lend an ear to a friend."

It was taking everything in him to not punch the marine in the face, but his respect for the Colonel held him back. He hadn't served with him very long, but in that time he had more than proven himself as an officer and a man. During that same time, Zhukarak proved that Marines were more than blood thirsty, trigger happy people. ~Well, Cyle is nothing like Zhukarak~ Matt thought to himself as Cyle said something about his decision being accepted or what not.
Matt had intended on going back to the bridge after his talk with the security chief, but he knew that at the present moment it would not be prudent. His face was flushed, sweat was dripping from his face, and he had the incredible urge to hit something. ~I hate that man!~ Matt thought to himself as he looked at his record. He hadn't meant for there working relationship to start off this way, but he always knew that he wouldn't always make friends.
=^=Commander Reynolds, sensors report proximity to the Ruita system, estimated time two minutes and three seconds=^=
"That's my cue," Matt said out loud. He knew that his emotions were still at the surface, but he had a job to do and he wouldn't allow him to interfere with that. As he stepped onto the bridge he noticed that everything was running normally, so he tried to do the same as he took his seat.
"Commander, you will lead an away team to the surface," Captain Hrisvalar ordered," I want you to find out if Admiral Lin is or has been in this system."
"Understood sir," Matt said as he made his way towards the lift. It did dawn at him that Admiral Drew was also making a v-line towards the lift.
“Admiral?” Colonel Hrisvalar asked, also standing, “where are you going?”
“I am going to join the away mission,” Drew replied. When the Admiral said these words Matt grimaced a bit. He knew the precautions that needed to be taken when an admiral went on an away mission. It was even worse when a Flag officer did so and in this case it would hamper the search for his missing friend. But it seemed that Matt had nothing to fear since Zhukarak convinced the admiral that his place was on the ship.
“I am so glad we have that settled,” Hrisvalar replied, retaking his seat also, then turning his attention to Matt, who had been standing silently watching the argument he said, “Good luck Commander.”
"Thank you sir," Matt said as he tapped his commbadge," Major Johnson, Ensign Chen, Doctor D'Amato, and Lieutenant Wilson you're with me."
Matt then saw Grace who had been speaking with Cyle only moments before. "Grace if you want to join us, I think your connection to the symbiont will be helpful."

Leftenant Jalek Gorr slowly leaned back in his chair and rubbed his chin nervously. Despite his best efforts a landing party from the Jefferson would be arriving in moments and he was at a loss for what to do.
A thousand ideas ran through his mind but he was well aware that Starfleet Officers had an inate ability to find things out. Admittedly one of the last starship to visit Rutia had removed the scourge of Kyril Finn which had been good for the populace but less so for those in the security forces that had been on the take. Gorr being one of them.
Nervously he toyed with his belt there had to be some way to stop Starfleet from interfering, if he didnt he knew that he... she... whoever would make life very difficult for him. Gorr owed Loran his life and the debt he thought would never be called in had suddenly returned to haunt him. Years of the good life had made him soft.
He had managed to make himself the contact person to the away team but what to do...he paused as an idea began to formulate. If any starfleet officers were to be injured or perhaps killed that may send them away... he couldnt do it himself but perhaps the Ansata could be tricked into doing the dirty work. A broad smile spread slowly over his lips, he would keep his word to Loran and throw them off the trail. He rose fastened, his side arm and holster and left for the transport co-ordinates.

"I'd be happy to, Matt. I have always enjoyed meeting new people and hopefully the Rutialians can point us in the right direction." Grace responded with a smile to Matt's question.
As Grace started to walk with Matt, she asked him "Matt, wince it is just the two of us, right now, is there anything you want to talk about? I know that you know I have was just talking with Cyle. He isn't that bad once you get to know him. And there isn't anyone else I would want with me when it comes to a crisis. You should see him throw rocks at zombie!"
After that comment, Matt looked at Grace with this look of confusion on his face. "Just what in the world are you talking about."
So, Grace spent a few minutes telling Matt about a mission she had been on with Cyle where they had run into some zombies, it put some laughter back in Matt's voice. "I would bet anything that Caleb hasn't heard that laugh for a while. I would bet anything you haven't had a lot to laugh about." Grace said!

Daran was sitting in his office going over his finding regarding the autopsy of Loran on Rutia. The item that he had found was the only real abnormality that he could find and was still waiting to review his discovery with Nathan and Dr. Mercy.
He was staring at the three dimensional model of the thing when Lt. D'Amato stuck her head in the door. "Sorry doctor" she said, "I've just been ordered onto the away team that's going to Rutia by the First Officer. I just wanted you to know."
Daran blinked in surprise. He had been certain that he and Mercy would be the one's going to the planet. However, his mind quickly changed gears. Matt obviously had other ideas, and Daran was in no position to argue. "That's fine lieutenant" he said. "In that case, I need you to quickly review this information that I've found."
Lindsay nodded and pulled up a chair. Daran reviewed his findings. "As long as you're on the planet, I need you to try to get access to the security monitors that covered the morgue and hospital area between when the body was brought in and when the autopsy was done. There was about a 20 hour delay."
The lieutenant spared him a glance. "How am I supposed to arrange that?"
Daran shrugged. "I don't know. I'm not certain how I would manage it if I were there. Arrange a trade, a professional courtesy call. I'm certain the colonel would approve the exchange of medical supplies for information. Just be careful about how much you offer."
The lieutenant was looking at him sceptically, and Daran didn't blame her. This was going to be a large longshot. There was a bit of commotion at the door and Daran looked up. He could see that Laurana, Nathan and Stuart had answered his call.
"I'm glad that the three of you are here. We need some suggestions quickly after I review what I've found." The three of them nodded and crowded around the monitor as Daran went over his findings.

Grace had the uncany ability of making people smile even though they didn't want to, but no one needed her special gift more than Matt. He was no longer angry, but he also knew that his problem with Cyle would not go away so easily.
"Grace, I know that he is your friend, but I can't stand his attitude," Matt said," which basically means I can't stand him." Talking about Cyle once again filled Matt with urge to punch something, which Grace picked up on. "See, I'm not joking."
Grace was about to respond, but the lift doors opened and signaled that they had arrived at the transporter room. It had been a while since he commanded an away mission, so he was glad to get his feet wet again.
"Doctor, I know this is unusual, but I don't trust the medical records that we have on file and I would like for you to obtain them," Matt said," if you have to, you can offer them anything short of weapons or advance equipment."
<Tag D'Amato, so who wants to do a bit of extra simming>
"Ensign Chen, Lt. Wilson you two will look for anything out of the ordinary," Matt ordered," I'm pretty sure that the Rutialians will not be forthcoming."
"Understood, Commander," Lt. Wilson responded.
"Grace, Major, we will talk to Jalek Gorr, who reports say had dealing with Loran," Matt explained," Grace I know that you don't like to intrude into people's minds, but this is really important. Major you will accompany us and the others will accompany the doctor and Ensign Chen and Lt. Wilson."
<Tag Grace and Cyle>
With his orders said and confirmed the first half of the away team was beamed down to the planet. He had made sure to tell them to keep there commbadges on at all times.
"Well I suppose it's our turn," Matt said as he stepped onto the transporter padd. When Cyle and Grace were ready, Matt acknowledged the transporter chief and the transport was under way.
"Welcome to Rutia," a man who Matt presumed to be Jalek Gorr.

Mrak walked in with three PADDs. Jeff was busy staring at the diagrams of the phaser energy breakdown and reassembly Matrix.
"What are in those?" Jeff asked as Mrak set them on his desk.
"Trill Physiology for Dummies, as the nurse who put it together phrased it. that and the Admiral's Current condition, and a Program that will load a Holographic test program."
"No guarantees on the test, I take it?"
"None. but it should help some."
"right. I want to start with the basics." Jeff pulled up the schematics of a early phaser. "One of the first true Phasers. they had Phase pistols before this, but those wern't very reliable. They didn't work in the same way, and delivered much more energy then was necessary to do their job."
"so Starfleet Switched back to plain lasers."
"for a while. more reliable and energy efficacy. but they managed to figure out the phaser son after. this is a design from around 2260."
"pretty basic."
"yeah, it is. The key here is the phase shift field. A roating Magnetic Feild."
"And one in the other direction."
"right. it changes the nature of the beam from a jumbled EM beam to an organized coherent stream."
"Assisted by a crystal that had to be hand designed for each design of phaser..." Mrak Added.
"And without it, what would happen?" Jeff Asked.
"Well... I suppose... I guess I don't know."
"Nobody does. the original tests, if there were any, don't show up anywhere. they managed to perfect the focus on it soon after, so the crystal was left out. "
"Wouldn't it just flood the area with the energy?"
"Probably."
"Not our Answer then."
"No, and phaser design hasn't changed much in principle since. better power cells, better focusing, but well, not much else." Jeff slammed his hand into the desk. "there has to be an answer here somewhere."
"Perhaps there is." Mrak Commented. "the most recent design change was the inclusion of a separation matrix. it pulls the Phaser Energy Apart, channels it into seperate beams, nad refocuses them together."
"that increases power, If I recall correctly."
"Right. but what if we're going for the wrong target?"
"leave them separate? what good would that do?"
"We could trace them with something."
"Mrak, you're a genius." Jeff nodded. We can line the separated beam with something to ionize the air around him to the point where the oxygen turns into Ozone. That would knock any humanoid out."
"or Kill them, depending on how much Ozone was made."
"Details." Jeff replied, diving into hs computer console.

The call came interrupting their conversation. The doctors and guardian rose and were on their way to sickbay. Stuart briefly thought about what they had discussed, but only briefly. His mind had wandered off again to T'Val. He wondered how she was fairing.
Arriving at sickbay, Doctor Keller directed them to a terminal in order to show them something. At the same time he had mentioned that Lieutenant D'Amato had been selected to go on the away mission, which was being planned as they were speaking. This struck Stuart as odd, he too was sure that he would be going along. He was going to have to protest as soon as they were done here.

Nathan too found it odd that D'Amato was going to join the away team. With at least one specialist on Magellan's condition present, it would've made sense to send that person instead of someone who knew next to nothing about their subject of study. Then again, perhaps it was better that the incorrigeable woman was out of the way, so that they could study their case in quiet.
The gynaecologyst leaned closer to study the data, but couldn't make much of it. "Please explain what I am looking at?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at Daran in a very Vulcan-like fashion. He noticed that Mercy seemed to be miles away with his thoughts more frequently, and gave him a mild nudge. "What do you think doctor?" he asked, trying to keep Mercy's attention to the case on hand. "You're the one most knowledgeable on Admiral Lin and his condition. Daran and I can only speculate, mostly."
(Mercy/Daran)
Several minutes later, Nathan beckoned Daran, indicating he wanted a word in private. "Has doctor Mercy had his customary med-check?" he asked in a hushed voice, so that the other doctor wouldn't overhear. "He seems to be oddly distracted at the most unusual times, and I don't think it has to do with Admiral Lin's condition. I can tell he's worried, but not just for him, and he's also unusually short-tempered. From what I've gathered from his public records, he's not usually this testy, but rather a very good humoured fellow."

"Two words, Commander Reynolds" Cyle said sternly, with a bit of annoyance.
"I understand, but please remember, Matt is Star Fleet and now is in a position I held not too long ago. I can tell you it isn't an easy position to be in. Instead of being a department head, he is now a 2nd in command. It can sometimes be quite daunting. I have to say, I don't envy him."
Cyle looked at Grace for a moment silently, then walked off. He took the turbolift down a few floors and was heading to his quarters, where he might have been able to calm down a bit.
'Great' Cyle said rolling his eyes. He kept walking until he reached his quarters, once he entered, he got a glass of water from his replicator, then looked at his wall. Various weapons were pinned up, all of different races. He reached up and grabbed a boot knife, then left his room.
Cyle reached the transporter room just in time to hear Reynolds issuing orders.
Cyle nodded in response, his only reason for not arguing was Grace at the moment. When they beamed down, Cyle looked around and took a deep breath.

Daran nodded. "Nathan, I'm not really sure what you're looking at. From my analysis, it is a artificially inserted device similar to an isolinear chip. It's approximately 2mm square and was put into a position that might conceivably evade a casual, or even fairly intense scan. It was removed from Loran's body somewhere between the time she was killed and the time she was autopsied. It's not very large, but could have held some information that was relevant. Finding who took it out might lead us to Magellan."
Nathan was examining the readouts carefully, trying to figure out what he was looking at, then asked Dr. Mercy for his opinion on the findings. Mercy was slow to respond, and seemed distracted. Shortly, Nathan took Daran to one side and voiced some concerns about Dr. Mercy.
After a moment of thought, Daran responded. "I agree that he seems to be distracted, and surprised that he isn't going on the away mission. Perhaps that's all there is to it. Or maybe there are things going on that we don't understand. However, I don't think that it's necessary right now to conduct a med check."
