Tamara did not make any movement during the Doctor's tirade. She wouldn't have been physically able to stop him anyway. The punch to the face of the Romulan knocked him out, and Hannah ran over to ensure that the prisoner wasn't seriously harmed.
Megan composed herself well, but Tamara could tell that the science officer was one step away from snapping. The tension in the room was so thick it could be cut with a knife. The counselor tried to keep Megan in the realm of the sane by placing her hand on the officer's shoulder. It was a show of support, if not a show of agreement with Megan. No doubt, everyone was relieved when Nathan said he would be returning to quarters.
After announcing he was leaving, the Doctor paused, seemingly hopeful that he would get some sort of response out of the two officers, or perhaps a passing medical attendant. He received none; nobody wanting to become caught in the strafing of the Doctor's verbal and physical assaults.
Once he left, the concerned counselor sprang forth her thoughts. "We are going to have to confine him to quarters, aren't we?" she asked to Hannah. Tamara sounded regretful, though. She had no wish to lock the civilian doctor in his quarters. The passing thought of having Freddy be put into some sort of protective environment throughout the temporary incarceration came and went, without sticking. He didn't pose a danger to his son, but his instability left it on the table if future outbursts were to occur.
For the safety of the crew, however, the confinement of the Doctor would need to be done. The interrogation was already compromised by him. His outbursts were also out of line with Starfleet protocol. Granted, he was not an officer of Starfleet, but he was serving aboard a Federation vessel. By virtue, he was bound by Federation rules. Punching a restrained prisoner in the face was not sanctioned, nor would it be tolerated, by Starfleet.
=/\= Computer, Counseling override alpha-five-omega =/\= It was the first time she ever had to such a thing. She knew it was the right thing to do, for the sake of Nathan - and the crew. Tamara wouldn't be deterred about the consequences of rightful action.
=/\= Counselor's log: I am placing Doctor Nathan Van Breughel confined to quarters until further notice. =/\=
The computer twirped at the comment, signaling that it understood the request. The computer would signal for security to pick him up and take him safely to his quarters.
Tamara couldn't help from feeling bad, though, even if others in the room were relieved. The man hadn't been acting himself lately, and everyone just wanted him to get better. There was work to be done, as well, and he was impeding it. Something had to give.

Matt was pleasantly surprised to feel almost no pain as he tried to sit up from the biobed. He wasn't sure how long he had been sleeping, but he knew that it had done him wonders. His cheerful demeanor turned to agitation when he saw their civilian doctor punch the Romulan prisoner in the face. His first reaction was to scream out explitives at the doctor but his ribs weren't about to allow that to happen.
~What the hell is going on?~ Matt asked as he slowly got to his feet. Even though he wasn't medically cleared to return to duty he wasn't about to allow members of his staff to punch prisoners in the face and not expect consequences. Even before he approached the group of officers, Megan had taken care of Nathan by knocking him out with a hypospray.
"Commander Garrett, I assume things are not going as expected?" Matt asked hoping he could offer her some help.

Nathan didn't quite mind the security escort he was getting; at least he would be getting home safely now and not get lost aboard the gigantic vessel. He'd gotten lost once before and had been to embarassed to ask the computer for directions. He had spent hours roaming the ship, trying to get home. It was a long time ago though, and he was too tired to even think straight.
"Thank's guys," he murmured as the guards gently deposited him on his couch. He didn't even hear the door locking behind them.
"Daddy!" A blur, and wind was knocked from Nathan's lungs as his son jumped upon him. "Guess who took me eating chocolate cake again? Dad, is she gonna be my mom?"
The doctor blinked in confusion, still battling his headache. "What?"
"Tamara, are you gonna date her? Will she be my mom?"
Nathan sighed. "Unlikely. Freddy, I've got a bad headache and I'm really tired. Pleas amuse yourself until dinner. Don't you have homework?" The boy pouted, but went off to attend to his chores while Nathan sagged back on the couch, rubbing his temples. He knew trouble was coming, sooner rather than later but he would take any bit of rest he could get. Lately, he just wasn't getting the rest he needed, and he wasn't as young as most of the officers serving the senior staff. And he had an energetic son to care for as well. Sometimes, being a single father was very rough on him. And here he knew his sister had five children and he wondered however she managed to even find the time to be with them.
~~~
Hannah took note of the first officer approaching and tapped Megan's arm in warning. "Come with me commander," she said strongly, "Commander Garret's got things under control now. Why don't you leave this situation to her while I get you checked out?" She led the first officer back to a biobed and performed a full body scan, then applied a hypospray to his throat and a dermal regenerator over his bare chest. "All fixed," she announced semi cheerfully. "You can return to light duty commander, but I warn you, let Commander Garrett finish what she was doing. It's her credibility on the line here, not yours."
"You can return to light duty commander, but I warn you, let Commander Garrett finish what she was doing. It's her credibility on the line here, not yours."
"I have no intention of undermining Commander Garrett, she's informed and I am not," Matt replied as he grabbed his vest," I need to work on a few things on the bridge and then I need to speak to Nathan."
"Don't be to harsh on him, he's going through a lot," Hannah said clearly concerned about her friend.
"I wonder how he would feel if I punched him in the face," Matt said as he rearranged his uniform," I know he's not Starfleet, but he knows the rules. We don't punch prisoners in the face."
"I suppose your right, but still we don't know what the Romulan was doing to him," Hannah said," we know they have telepathic abilities and Nathan kept on mentioning it."
"I'm going to allow Nathan to explain himself," Matt replied," but he should have handled it better."
"With all due respect Commander, your a hothead yourself," Hannah said before walking off to the other side of sickbay.
"I'm not a hothead," Matt said before he walked out of sickbay and headed towards the bridge.
The…conversation with the Romulan was not going well, though in a way that had been expected. The questioning needed to be taking place in the brig surrounded by security officers not in sickbay surrounded by doctors and nurses. It was difficult to be as threatening as was apparently required with the prisoner strapped to a biobed where he had been beamed treat his injuries. And Doctor van Breughel…Megan wasn’t sure what he could possibly be thinking, but his behavior had been completely unacceptable and had interfered immensely. After having dealt with him twice now, the last thing Commander Garrett had expected was for him to suddenly punch the intruder, knocking him out cold.
For a moment, the science officer just stared at him in disbelief before anger, real anger began to build up inside of her. He may have been a civilian and a doctor, but he was making her job a hundred times more difficult than it already was, and it was difficult enough right now. It took all her self control to keep from snapping at him, and either just letting him have a piece of her mind or physically knocking him into unconsciousness like he’d done to the prisoner. "He tried to get into my mind.” Nathan explained apologetically before beginning to fall, caught by a nearby security guard, and adding, "I'm going to my quarters, too tired to concentrate."
Continue to exercise restraint, Megan remained completely silent, in spite of the doctor’s pause that was clearly looking for some sort of comment from her. While his clearly weakened state and his mention of the Romulan trying to get into his mind did explain his behavior to some degree it, far from excused it with the science officer right now. The counselor’s hand almost caused the tense science officer to react, but she somehow managed to stay calm until Nathan finally made his way out of her sight. Moving to push her hair back from her face in an attempt to relieve just a little stress, even though it was far from needed, Commander Garrett was pleased to hear Counselor Thompson order the doctor confined to his quarters. At least that way, he wouldn’t be getting in her way again for awhile.
"Commander Garrett, I assume things are not going as expected?" Commander Reynold’s voice asked from behind her, causing the tension to build once more.
‘More like it’s been practically a disaster…’ Megan thought grimly before quickly composing herself and turning to face the first officer. “Not exactly, Sir. The Romulan was being less than cooperative, and it was exceedingly difficult to try and conduct an interrogation in sickbay, coupled with Doctor van Breughel’s…less than helpful behavior. I’ve already spoken with him once, thought maybe he understood, but that seems unlikely now. At the moment, he’s confined to quarters pending further psychological analysis.”
At that moment, Hannah ushered the first officer away, which Megan was grateful for...it was hard enough assuming command without feeling like someone was looking over your shoulder, though it was clear that Commander Reynolds simply disliked being out of the loop. Turning to another nearby nurse, the science officer ordered, “Keep the Romulan under heavy sedation and thoroughly search him for any weapons or poison, including his teeth. Once his condition is stabilized enough to move back to the brig, let me know.”
As the nurse moved off to update the patient’s chart to include this information, Lieutenant Tagert’s voice sounded over the comm informing her that Commander Darius was once again hailing the Jefferson. “Acknowledged, Lieutenant; I’m on my way. Send some random static and make it look like we’re having technical difficulties until I get there. Garrett out.” Megan ordered, already on her way there.
In the turbolift on the way to the bridge, Megan tapped her commbadge while pacing the car. “Garrett to T’Ress, what is the status on repairs? I hope you have some good news for me, Commander.”
<Tag T’Ress>
Very shortly after the channel closed, Commander Garrett entered the bridge and moved to the center to face the viewscreen. “Alright, clear up the interference and put him through.” she directed towards ops, and a few seconds later the face of the Romulan Commander returned to the viewscreen. “Commander Darius, I wasn’t expecting to here from you, as I thought you’d be well on your way home by now. I do hope you didn’t experience any sort of trouble or difficulties on your way, as it would be a shame if any malfunctions were to keep you here longer than you needed to be. Do you require any assistance?”
EDIT: Sorry, there was a paragraph here that was not supposed to be here - it was actually for a different sim. I am very sorry!
While not to suggest that T'Ress was not prioritizing his work, there were periods between diagnostics where he was powerless to do any more for repairs. Therefore, during those he started to finish the followups from the artificial intelligence that only recently 'officially happened.' Starfleet of course wanted to keep the whole matter a very secret thing.
As some of his final diagnostics ran, his paws too were running over the LCARS PADD rested in front of him.
"...Having said this, I have again presented a call to the United Federation of Planets to give the go ahead to an unmanned exploration program. For the price of one full starship, one could launch a multitude of unmanned probes. Due to subspace radio modulation, one could continue to gather data from them years after their creation. Furthermore, a warp seven probe that never needs to halt its progress can traverse a greater distance than even a Prometheus class vessel.
We could apply this artifical intelligence to such missions. Send it on long term probes...but make sure that it is not sentient in the manners that Daystrom had tried in his famous experiments in the 2260s. Those led to the demise of ships."
In the turbolift on the way to the bridge, Megan tapped her commbadge while pacing the car. “Garrett to T’Ress, what is the status on repairs? I hope you have some good news for me, Commander.”
T'Ress tapped his combadge as the diagnostic revealed perfection. The systems had finally returned to normal. "Merrow, I do. For once...we can actually fully restore shields as soon as the dilithium crystals have totally reformed. It looks as though nothing had happened down here....or so I should say so...murr...I am comfortably ignoring the mess you see....and the fact that I got my tail caught in the deactivated matter/anti-matter mixing reactor - twice."
“Acknowledged, Lieutenant; I’m on my way. Send some random static and make it look like we’re having technical difficulties until I get there. Garrett out.” "Yes Ma'am." Tom said, even though Commander Garrett had already closed the channel. "You heard her. Give em' the busy signal." Tom could hear the computers automated call signature "This kkfthe USkkfefferson kkkkf standby."
Commander Garrett walked onto the bridge with a slight smile on her face. She quickly dropped the smile and smoothed out her uniform as she said.“Alright, clear up the interference and put him through.” she directed the order towards ops. She quickly ran her hands over her hair making sure it was all in place. After Garrett returned her hands to her waist, the face of the Romulan Commander returned to the viewscreen. “Commander Darius, I wasn’t expecting to here from you, as I thought you’d be well on your way home by now. I do hope you didn’t experience any sort of trouble or difficulties on your way, as it would be a shame if any malfunctions were to keep you here longer than you needed to be. Darius gritted his teeth and tightened his fist. 'This female certainly knows how to burn my blood.' He thought. As he smiled at her though those sharp, Romulan, gritted teeth, he thought about firing on the Federation ship. When Praetor Shinzon had taken control of the Empire, he had solved the problem of not being able to fire wile cloaked. But that would leave them with no warp drive, and a lab full of cloaked mines that couldn't be disarmed in time. "Well actually Commander, I do. If at all possible, I need you use your Polaronic...umm" Darius looked down at his data PADD. Scrolling down a little ways, he cleared his throat and continued."Polaric Neutralization Beam."
"Well...I'm not supposed to privy you to this information, but I don't have the time to argue. There is a Rogue Scout ship in this area and I have been sent back to this sector to destroy...ahem...or chase, it back into Imperial Space."
Tag Garrett
"Commander, I would see this as a personal favor, one in which I would owe you Immeasurably, and the Empire would see it as an act of good will between our two Governments. Now why would Starfleet want a cloaked vessel meandering through their space. That could create an incident that could have repercussions for century's to come, and I for one would like only to see peace between our two peoples." Darius couldn't contain a smile after saying that so he tried to look as convincing as possible.
Tag Garrett
"Now Commander if it is our cloaking device your worried about...We have solved this discrepancy, that would effect our cloak some time ago, but the scout is an older ship and has not yet been refitted. It will be the only ship effected, and we will chase it out of here the moment you engage your device."
Tag Garrett
"Why thank you. The Empire is in your debt." With this Darius brought his fist to to his chest, then out in front of him, saluting Garrett and signaling to close channel. As soon as Garrett disappeared from the screen Darius hit his comm button and told N'Vek to disarm the mines, as soon as the cloaks were disbursed.
"Brembeck I want you to coordinate with N'Vek and Engineering. Get us out of here as fast as you can, but make sure the mines are disarmed first. When you set a course follow the ion trail that the shuttle we were here to help left. maybe we can cover it up...If you get us out of here and the Humans are oblivious to what has happened I will see to it that you are the new Sub-Commander and First officer of the Surreal." Brembeck nodded and the next thing to do was wait...
Freddy walked back to the main livingroom, intending to bug his father about something to eat. The replicator was still too high for him to reach properly and if his father ever found out he was climbing onto furniture to get at it, he'd be grounded for a week. "Dad?" he called, wondering why his father wasn't responding.
Walking up to where he'd seen him last, Freddy actually smiled when he spotted his father stretched out on the shorter couch, his feet dangling over the armrest on one end, one arm draped across his chest while holding a book in place, the other dangling off the side of the couch. A soft snoring sound told the boy his father was deeply asleep and not even a bomb going off would wake him now.
The boy knew his father was over-worked, stressed and exhausted. He'd heard his friends talk about it, having overheard their parents' gossip. News traveled fast on starships, even the news you didn't want to get public. Quietly, he pulled a blanket from one of the drawers and draped it over his father, before returning to his homework.
A beeping sound made him turn; who'd be calling at their quarters now? Earlier, he'd tried to allow a friend in, then noticed security standing at the door, barring the friend's way. Freddy had realised his father was in trouble, though he didn't understand how or why. "Enter," he called.
He yelped when a tall blue male officer dressed in blacks and greens stepped into the quarters. Brigadier Zhukarak Hrisvalar glanced around before finally looking down at the boy. "Where's your father?"
Freddy pointed towards the couch. "Don't wake him," he begged, "he needs to rest. He's so tired, please let him sleep?"
The Andorian's antennae moved slightly as he continued to regard the boy. "Actually, I'd like to talk with you for a little while," he suggested, then gestured to a seat. "may I?"
The boy nodded, still scared. He knew his father was pretty scared of this man, and he was certain it was with good reason. Yet, the man asked his permission to sit, so it couldn't be that bad could it? "Can I get you anything captain?" he asked, when he finaly found his voice again.
Hrisvalar shook his head. "Freddy, wasn't it?" At the boy's nod, he continued. "Freddy, do you like your father? Does he treat you well? Especially lately?"
Wide-eyed, Freddy stared back. "He's the best father in the galaxy," he managed, surprised as well as taken aback at the question. "He's been very busy, especially with people getting sick. He's away often but he spends time with me when he can. He hasn't even brought home a date in months!"
The Andorian nodded in sympathy. "So he's a good father," he concluded, before getting up. "I'm going to have to wake him now. Why don't you return to your room while I have a word with him?"
"Please don't hurt him?" he boy begged, before fleeing to his room.
Hrisvalar shook the sleeping doctor, narrowly avoiding a swat as the man tried to bat him away. "Doctor van Breughel," the Andorian spoke up, raising his voice.
Eyes snapping open, Nathan practically bolted to his feet, shrinking away from the Andorian. "Sir?" he queried, while rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "What are you doing here?"
"Talking to you," the Andorian replied smoothly, "you're in trouble doctor. You're confined to your quarters until further notice. Commander Reynolds will be dropping by shortly to question you. I merely wished to see how you were coping. And how your son was coping. Counselor Thompson has expressed some concerns regarding the rearing of the boy."
"I was asleep now," Nathan retorted, sitting back down, "the last few days have been hell as you well know. Sickbay was quarantined, I was sick myself. Then this Romulan that was injured, but managed to assault me." He shook his head in dismay. "You try to help someone...and this is what you get as thanks. Captain, I have a headache, can we talk later? I'll answer all of Reynolds' questions when he drops by but all I want to do now is sleep."
Hrisvalar nodded. "Don't try to leave, security has orders to stun you if you do. The boy may leave to attend to his studies and visit his friends. Someone will accompany him when he does. Understood?"
"Yes sir," Nathan answered demurely, while letting the brigadier out. Once the commanding officer was gone, Nathan headed towards his bedroom, but not before calling up a snack for his son from the replicator, setting it on the table for him to find. As soon as he crawled in bed, he drifted back into a deep sleep.
*** a few minutes before ***
"I would say that is too harsh, Brigadier."
Tamara had forgone her usual habit of calling fellow officers by their first name in an attempt to stress the formality of her decision. It wasn't meant to be taken as simply a friend-to-friend set of thoughts. It was a set professional opinions.
"If he is unstable, the child is in danger," the Andorian calmly replied. Tamara could not help but get the feeling that she was getting in the way with his attempt at practicing counseling. Every other time he had done this, since the beginning of her assignment, she had backed down. This time was going to be a little different, as a man's life and emotional state was at stake. She still was respectful, though, as anything other than that would be out of her nature.
"Typically, in situations like this, the child is not at risk." She found herself defending Nathan even though she didn't agree with his actions. The child, Freddy, was more than capable of handling himself.
"When the patient, in this case Doctor Van Breughel, exhibits irrational behavior, generally they would exhibit some other form of disorder - whether it be Munchhausen Syndrome by Proxy, or Obsessive Compulsiveness, that is a give away that there is a serious danger that exists to the child. In this case, Freddy Van Breughel's bright personality, and Nathan's clear love for his child, is exculpatory in showing he is not a danger."
The words fell on deaf ears, as marines were not trained to analyze, but react. Zhukarak hadn't even looked up from the work he was taking care of on his desk the entire time she was in his ready room.
Tamara almost wished she hadn't come to the Brigadier with her concerns. The purpose was to make Hrisvalar more aware of the sociological makeup of his crew. Instead of listening, and taking it under advisement, he would react swiftly and perhaps harshly. It was not Tamara's way of doing things, and it countered her concept of effective counseling.
"Is there anything I can say to convince you to do otherwise?"
Zhukarak's lack of an answer, or acknowledgment of the question, was an answer all to itself.
"I want this on the record that this was not my decision." Tamara said as she left, once again defeated by the hard headed Andorian.
"Well actually Commander, I do. If at all possible, I need you use your Polaronic…” the Romulan Commander paused, glanced down at his data padd, before looking up and continuing. “…Polaric Neutralization Beam."
Not batting an eye at his knowledge of their special armament, Megan was nonetheless surprised, both at his mentioning it and his request for her to utilize it. “That is a rather unusual request, Commander. May I ask why?”
"Well...I'm not supposed to privy you to this information, but I don't have the time to argue. There is a Rogue Scout ship in this area and I have been sent back to this sector to destroy...ahem...or chase, it back into Imperial Space." Darius answered calmly, surprising Commander Garrett still further.
“I see…and you wish our assistance to help locate this rogue vessel? I was unaware that you were unable to track your own ships under cloak, though I assume this scout ship is purposefully avoiding your detection. However…”
"Commander, I would see this as a personal favor, one in which I would owe you Immeasurably, and the Empire would see it as an act of good will between our two Governments. Now why would Starfleet want a cloaked vessel meandering through their space? That could create an incident that could have repercussions for century's to come, and I for one would like only to see peace between our two peoples." the Commander lied, the fact that he was being intentional deceptive quite clear from the less than sincere tone and smile that crossed his face.
Her guard now even further up in light of the obvious deceit, Megan was attempting to consider her options and figure out what Darius could possibly have to gain from this, while still delaying an answer. “That would certainly not be in either of our government’s best interest. Still there are…other concerns to be considered in light of this request. After all, the scout ship is not the only cloaked vessel in this vicinity. I can’t imagine you would be particularly pleased if…”
"Now Commander if it is our cloaking device your worried about...We have solved this discrepancy that would effect our cloak some time ago, but the scout is an older ship and has not yet been refitted. It will be the only ship affected, and we will chase it out of here the moment you engage your device." Darius assured her, fake smile firmly in place, causing chills of uncertainty to crawl up her spine.
“Very well, Commander. As soon as the power is available and the radiation levels are within acceptable levels for success, we will attempt to assist you with this problem of yours. Hopefully we will be able to make an attempt in a matter of hours” Megan finally answered, hoping the excuses would give them time to possibly determine what he was up to. Besides, engaging the beam was the first thing Commander Garrett had been planning to do once the option was available.
"Why thank you. The Empire is in your debt." Darius replied before saluting her, very respectfully with no sign of sarcasm whatsoever, and closing the channel.
Frowning suspiciously at the screen, which now showed a slightly distorted star field, Megan moved to her console to check on the radiation levels. As expected they were rapidly declining, and in a few hours the sensors would be virtually clear and their shields would be restored. Try as she might, Commander Garrett could think of no reason that activating the Polaric neutralization beam would be any more beneficial to the Romulans than to them. Still…something was going on. And what’s more, what did any of this have to do with the missing Ambassador?
“Tagert keep an eye on radiation levels and let me know when they dip low enough to clear up the sensors. If Darius calls again, do the same thing as last time. I’ll be in sickbay.” Megan ordered, moving towards the turbolift once more. The only person on the Jefferson who might have the answers to what was going on was strapped to a biobed, unconscious for now but not for long.
Entering the turbolift, Commander Garrett made use of the time by making a necessary comm call. “Garrett to T’Ress, I know you’re very busy Commander, but if you could spare a moment to take a look at the Polaric neutralization beam and perhaps increase its effectiveness, I would greatly appreciate it. Use any available information on improvements in Romulan cloaking technology to give us an advantage. We’ll need any edge we can possible get in a few hours.”
<Tag T’Ress>
After only a short time in sickbay, the prisoner had been thoroughly searched, awakened, and beamed back to the brig where he belonged. Megan felt much better about conducting an interrogation in a cell than in sickbay, surrounded by medical personnel. It was hard to threaten someone with harm in front of people whose whole lives were devoted to doing no harm. Still, threatening him might not even be necessary. Commander Garrett was going to make a supposition and hope that it was close enough to the truth to get the Romulan to talk willingly. If that didn’t work, that’s when the harm would come into play.
“Garrett to Counselor Thompson, please report to the brig as soon as possible.” Megan requested while moving towards the holding cells. This time, things would be done right the Commander had decided, and fortunately, Nathan van Breughel would be no where in sight and far enough away to cause no further problems.
The questions that were about to be unsettled Matt, but Zhukarak's instructions were specific. He knew that Nathan would rather die than harm Freddy, just like he would for Caleb, but his previous actions raised concerns about Freddy's safety. Zhukarak told him to wait an hour or so after he had talked to Nathan which made it even more agonizing.
"Has the boy left?" Matt asked the security detail outside Nathan's quarters.
"No sir, one of his friends wanted to visit with him, but other than that nothing has occurred," the security officer replied.
"Alright thank you," Matt said as he entered the doctor's quarters. He immediately saw Freddy eating some cookies and playing with a toy that he didn't recognize.
"I already told the captain that my father is the greatest in the galaxy, why don't you just leave him alone!" Freddy said to bitterly for a child his age.
"Freddy, your father has not been himself lately," Matt replied gently. Matt knew that Zhukarak lacked the ability to understand human children, the fact that he was a marine didn't help either.
"He's always working, he's tired," Freddy replied a bit more comfortably.
"I know, that's why we think he should have some time off," Matt said as he put down his padd and sat next to the boy," would that make you happy?"
"Yes, I could spend all my time with my father," Freddy said with glee.
"Not right away, your father will need some time alone first," Matt said hoping the young boy wouldn't catch on to quickly," I'm guessing your father is in his bedroom?"
"Yes, but he is sleeping right now," Freddy said clearly concerned for his father.
"I have to speak with him, I have my orders," Matt said said as he walked into the bedroom where a visibly tired doctor slept," computer lights on."
(Nathan)
"Doctor van Breughal you are hereby relieved of your duties pending a physiological evaluation performed by Doctor Thompson," Matt said wanting to get the worst part over with first," do you want to respond?"
(Nathan)
"What the hell were you thinking attacking a patient?" Matt asked and then waited for the doctor's answer.
"...We’ll need any edge we can possible get in a few hours.”
Purring in a polite and consious manner, the feline flicked his tail in the manner that was originally perscribed to him by the physician under whom's care he originally fell. Sighing gently to himself, he tapped his combadge to initiate an equal communique unto the other direction.
"Merrrrow, Commander Garrett, this is T'Ress speaking. I believe that it may be possible to access the Starfleet database on Romulan military technology. I would advicate only using the shipboard computers so that our investigation may be handled in the most clandestine of attempts."
Purring again he nodded, despite the fact that he would not at all be visible to the other. Continuing to speak, there was an audible warble in his voice. This was caused by the fact that what he was about to ask permission for, he was already doing. Surely she would have accepted and therefore need never know that he had jumped the gun.
Afirmative?
"I believe that database can be directly linked to the polaric neutralization beam. This rigged device can thus emit a blast that is directly in compliment to the level of energy and type that is demonstrated by the database. I trust that you shall issue your blessing, murrr. In these matters of scientific means, you do trump my commands after all."
Leaning over the console that he was seated at, he continued to key in requests for the database. Being such a ranking officer, he was able to physically access the computer core without her premission. Rather, it was a manner of protocol for him to receive such. Time, however, was totally of the essence. They required one to think fast, and act even faster.
And T'Ress wanted to be quick on his paws.
*kathud...* ... *kathud...*
Counselor Thompson was calming her nerves by bouncing the broken hoverball against the wall. The anti-gravity generator had burned out long ago, but it made a decorative paper weight in her office. Tamara often found herself bouncing it while she was deep in thought. A rhythm was established where the ball could be thrown at the floor near the wall, bounce to hit the wall, and bounce off the wall almost back to where it started at in the Counselor's hand.
*kathud...*
She was becoming emotionally attached to her work again, and she needed to objectively distance herself from it. Nathan was a good man, just confused. His tendencies to gain the friendship of Zhukarak were going unnoticed, as were hers. He probably couldn't handle it as well as she could, though. She didn't define herself based upon what others thought of her.
Tamara had done some research on protocol for civilians aboard starships. She found that they are subjected to the same psychological examination as Starfleet Officers. One couldn't run the risk of a mentally unstable person running around in such a volatile environment.
With that being understood, the counselor decided to take a closer look at what may be going on with the doctor. True, he had no wife - forcing him to raise Freddy alone. That was not uncommon in this day and age - and the boy, for being four years old, was fairly self sufficient. Kids had to be these days. The other issue was the amount of time he spent in sickbay, and the tight control he exhibited on his staff. Nurse Hannah often usurped his authority, but that was due to her comfort and experience level. Most weren't afforded the luxury of talking back to the Doctor, as his grip on goings-on was tough, according to the other nurses she had come across in casual conversation. Maybe he felt he was starting to lose control of sickbay?
Her thoughts were disrupted by an incoming work order to her console. Nathan's return to work was pending a positive result of his reinstatement evaluation. Further, Freddy was going to be removed from his father's care. Freddy will need to go under psychological evaluations, which Doctor Thompson was dead against. She would delegate that secondary task to one of the family counselors under her. The day care center was run by one, and while Tamara never really gotten to know her, she would be more than capable of evaluating Freddy. She dealt with him daily anyway.
*kathud...*
The ball bouncing resumed only to be interrupted again by Megan's request to go to the brig.
=/\= On my way =/\= Tamara replied. She respected the Science Officer, who seemed to be the only one who had a pleasant control of any situation. Strange, too, since Tamara's first encounter with her was when she was under a Court Martial. She couldn't imagine the kind but motivated woman being in such trouble. Then again, everyone had their demons.
She placed the hoverball on her desk and left her office, wishing to get this interrogation over with as soon as possible. The amount of stress the job was starting to pile on to her felt like a weight on her shoulders. It wasn't anything she hadn't dealt with before, but her natural reaction was to get it all off the table instead of letting it sit and dwell.
"I have to speak with him, I have my orders," Matt said said as he walked into the bedroom where a visibly tired doctor slept," computer lights on."
Freddy remained in the livingroom, whimpering slightly as Matt pressed on, invading his father's privacy.
In the bedroom, Nathan blinked against the sudden invasion of light, blinking again when he saw Matt standing over him, looking none too pleased. "Commander, what can I do for you?" he queried, his surprise audible.
"Doctor van Breughel you are hereby relieved of your duties pending a physiological evaluation performed by Doctor Thompson," Matt said wanting to get the worst part over with first," do you want to respond?"
"Do I..." Nathan faltered, not understanding in the slightest. "Commander, what is going on? I already am relieved, Brigadier Hrisvalar told me earlier...why did you wake me?" He had so many questions, but not the slightest idea on where to start. Why was he treated the way he was being treated?
"What the hell were you thinking attacking a patient?" Matt asked and then waited for the doctor's answer.
This time, the doctor narrowed his eyes, rose to his feet and walked over to the bedroom door, closing it. "Attack him?" he echoed, "attack him? Commander, do you have any idea what actually happened? He attacked me! Invaded my most private thoughts, repeatedly! Both in the holding cell and again in sickbay. He tried to influence me, and I couldn't let that happen."
He returned back to the bed and lay back down. "Please leave commander, as you said, I need rest. You disrupted that very rest I have been ordered to take. Please make sure you shut the door on your way out. Good night commander."
He waited until Reynolds had reached the door to the bedroom. "And commander? I'm looking forward to talking with Counselor Thompson at the earliest convenience."
Tom had moved to the science station and was running another scan of the radiation. He had been on the bridge well over his shift but didn't want to leave with out being relived by a command level officer. Ensign Chen had reported for duty and Tom had gladly let Chen take the wheel, mostly glad to get out of his chair. His legs were numb, and eyes hurt a little, he was rubbing one of them when he noticed that the radiation had almost completely dissipated. He noticed some anomalous reading in an area almost bereft of radiation. He scanned the radiation a second time to be sure. There were small concentrations of tetryon particles, along with a blip of neutron radiation every now and then. Greg Hayes was at Opps.. and with Wilson down with the Romulan in security, Hayes was the most qualified to run Tactical. "Lt. Commander Hayes. Please go to the Tactical station. See if you can get a weapons lock on these tetryon particles, but don't put any power to the weapon system. Just the targeting scanners...we don't want anyone out there goin' gun shy on us."
Wile Hays tried for a target lock Tagert called Matt to the Bridge. He knew Matt was on light duty but Garrett had her hands full with the Romulan and he wasn't even sure this was what he thought it was. "Commander Reynolds please come to the bridge. I think I got Something here you might wanna take a look at."
When Jombis awoke he was back in the cell he had occupied earlier. He could see Commander Garrett standing out side the force field. Laying on his bunk he said "Why are you keeping me alive? You know I'll never tell you anything."
Tag Garrett
Not turning his head or eyes in her direction, he said in a childish tone."I'd rather be transported into the vacuum of space."
Tag Garrett
"Why did you take my clothes Commander?" He grinned knowing he was about to catch her off-guard "Did you want to see a Romulan naked? I must admit I've been rather curious about your anatomy my self." He chuckled Then abruptly halted his laugh as he raised an eyebrow and changed his facial expression to one of annoyance. "Or did Starfleet want a Romulan uniform to analyze?"
Tag Garrett
"Fine then, answer me with a questions!!!" He jumped up and thew himself against the force field. "Commander the longer you keep me alive, the more likely my family will be killed and the less likely I am to give up what I know. So some friendly advice COMMANDER. Kill me now and end both our troubles." Jombis noticed the Councilor enter the brig control room as he finished speaking and was furious for some odd reason. He punched the force field numbing his fist in the proses. With out a complaint about his disabled wrist he demanded. "What's she hear for? I don't think your Councilor has the stomach for an interrogation, and I'm sure you didn't bring her down here to break my jaw."
Matt was inclined to believe Nathan's assertion that Zhukarak had already told him, but there was no mention in the official log or Nathan's profile. Even though Matt might have done the same thing in his situation, he cannot accept that type of behavior any longer.
"The counselor will be very happy to hear that doctor," Matt said as he turned to face the older man once more," hopefully you'll be be on duty in a few days."
Matt truly hoped that Nathan would be able to take a few days off and just relax. If what Freddy said was true, he needed it badly. Then again everyone on board needed some off time.
"Commander?" the security officer asked when he noticed Matt coming out.
"The doctor is not allowed to leave his quarters," Matt said," if an urgent matter arises, he must be escorted at all times."
"Yes sir," the security officer replied," anything else?"
Answering in the negative, Matt slowly walked on. Nathan's rebuttal had begun to intrigue him. Nathan claimed that the Romulan had been trying to invade his mind. He wanted to control Nathan and Matt knew that they couldn't allow that to happen. He would need to speak with Doctor Thompson about this and make sure that no harm was actually done.
"Commander Reynolds please come to the bridge. I think I got something here you might wanna take a look at."
"On my way, Reynolds out," Matt said as he quickened his pace. Matt found it odd to be called to the bridge, but realized that Megan had to be dealing with the Romulan to not be called.
On the bridge
"What is it?" Matt asked finding everyone on duty hard at work.
(Tagert)
"Tachyon particles?" Matt asked knowing the implications of what this might mean.
"Commander those tachyon's are not naturally occurring," Hayes reported," they are being emitted from something."
"A Romulan ship perhaps," Matt said with a bereaved sigh.
"What is it?" Matt asked finding everyone on duty hard at work. "Well sir, take a look at this." Tom pointed at an area off the port bow. "Tachyon particles?" Matt asked knowing the implications of what this might mean. "Commander those tachyon's are not naturally occurring," Hayes reported," they are being emitted from something." "A Romulan ship perhaps," Matt said with a bereaved sigh. " Yes sir the tetryon particles, I'm pretty sure are coming from a Romulan ship. But look here...Right there. That neutron radiation keeps showing up every now and them I think that is a warp core, and the way it's dispersing I think the warp engines are engaged, but the warp field is being thrown out of whack by the radiation. Right by the edge of the tetryons the radiation Jumps 182% compared to the space 300 Meters away from the tetryons." Tag MattNear the Deflector Dish there were still a lot of structural integrity issue's. Another bulk head was starting to give away. As it crumpled in a micro fracture was created. ssssss. Air seeped out through the fracture. There was a sudden lurch in the ship as the section was crushed, venting the air in a cargo bay and rupturing an EPS conduit cutting power to half of the ship it was only out for a couple of second before the energy was rerouted and restored. [glow=red,2,300]In the Dark[/glow]Jombis couldn't see, but he could remember where the guard was, he pushed out in front or him knocking Garrett to the floor (Maybe copin' a feel in the process ). Running out of the cell he moved behind the guard just as the lights came back on, knocking him out and grabbing the Counselor as he headed out the door. Tag TamaraThe Councilor would not be quiet, she was saying something to Jombis, but he knocked her unconscious, and threw her over his shoulder. At the first intersecting corridor, Jombis found himself trapped behind a force field. Still dragging the Counselor along he looked for another route. He found an access tunnel by another force field and removed the panel, but the security officer that was watching the corridor saw him and after he lowered the forcefield he started to chase them. Jombis crawled down the tube as fast as he could, when he made it to the end of the first tunnle, he laid the Human female down in the chamber that the tunnel led into and climbed the ladder the, security guard followed close behind. As the security guard climbed the first rung of the ladder, Jombis jumped down, landing a heel in his Temple, efficiently knocking him out. Jombis grabbed the officers phaser and continued on his way, down the ladder instead of up. he was on his way to the shuttle bay. Jombis and his hostage had made it all the to the shuttle bay and had entered a shuttle, but before he could lock out the bay door controls, they had been taken off line by the ships engineer, he was standing in the bay as Jombis could see through the front window of the shuttle. Unfortunately for the Romulan there was also a brace of soldiers. He saw no way out, he waited in the shuttle with his phaser set to kill. He reached out with his mind feeling what he could. There wasn't much. He was reaching harder, trying to feel the thoughts of the person behind the controles... There was something...familiar, but it wasn't the person in the control tower. It was Nate, he was dreaming about Jombis, and his home, back on Romulus. They were going on a....a picnic. Jombis entered the dream, and tried to push the Doctor, back to the Jefferson. "Nate lets go to the shuttle bay and take a ride." he said in the dream pushing this thought on the doctors mind. Tag Nate
After entering the detention area and approaching the forcefield, Megan watched the prisoner closely for any signs of trouble. Not that she made a habit of trusting Romulans to begin with, but this one had already tried to pull something. As he awoke, he glanced at her before turning his gaze back to the ceiling and remaining fairly still. "Why are you keeping me alive? You know I'll never tell you anything."
“We don’t exactly make a habit of killing prisoners.” Megan answered calmly. “Besides, I don’t think you boarded our ship intentionally. This was either a mistake or someone else beamed you here against your will. You have nothing to lose, but perhaps together we can figure a way out that will benefit us both.”
"I'd rather be transported into the vacuum of space." he replied, not even sparing her a glance or moving. Biting her lip to keep from sighing in frustration, the science officer tried to stay calm, as flying off the handle would only give him the upper hand, even more so than most prisoners who had information.
“Well that’s not going to happen, so I suggest you start thinking about alternatives, including the possibility of revenge against whoever sent you here. They wanted you dead most likely, and I doubt you really want to give them that satisfaction. My guess is the person who did this to you is Commander Darius. Maybe…”
"Why did you take my clothes Commander?" the Romulan asked, ignoring her line of questioning and grinning at her suddenly. "Did you want to see a Romulan naked? I must admit I've been rather curious about your anatomy my self." he added, chuckling briefly before going serious once more. "Or did Starfleet want a Romulan uniform to analyze?"
Realizing he was attempting to bait her, Megan ignored his inappropriate jibes and merely answered the basic question. “You don’t think we’re so stupid as to let you keep a uniform which could potentially hold weapons we can’t detect now do you? Now why did Commander Darius send you here? Had your usefulness run out or did you just do something stupid?”
"Fine then, answer me with a questions!!!" the prisoner raged, suddenly jumping up and throwing himself against the forcefield before being propelled backwards again by the force of the impact. Megan jumped slightly but held her ground. "Commander, the longer you keep me alive, the more likely my family will be killed and the less likely I am to give up what I know. So some friendly advice COMMANDER, kill me now and end both our troubles."
Before Megan reply, Counselor Thompson arrived, drawing the Romulans attention for a brief moment before he flew into a rage once more and punched the forcefield. Grimacing slightly, as that had to have hurt, he asked, "What's she hear for? I don't think your Councilor has the stomach for an interrogation, and I'm sure you didn't bring her down here to break my jaw."
Momentarily ignoring Tamara, as she’d only been asked here to observe, Megan once again disregarded the outburst. “If anyone were to break your jaw, it would be me. Now considering that I doubt your transport here was ordered, it is unlikely that your government has any idea of your location, so your family is most likely still safe. In fact, it’s fair to say that they would be very displeased with Darius for risking the Empire by putting you in this position in the first place. But…”
Commander Garrett’s attempt at gaining his cooperation was cut short by a shudder in the deckplating and the sudden loss of power. Stunned for a split second, Megan made a move towards the last location of the Romulan, only to be shoved out of the way and into the wall, hard. Shaking off the momentary daze, the science officer jumped for a phaser as the lights went up and turned to aim it at the escaped prisoner only to find him already holding Tamara hostage.
Unable to shoot and risk Lieutenant Thompson’s life, Megan could only watch as he dragged the counselor out into the corridor before tapping her commbadge. “Commander Garrett to all hands, Red Alert; we have a Romulan prisoner on the loose with a hostage. Security teams move to intercept. Activate isolation fields.”
Wiping the blood from her nose from the collision with the wall, the science officer moved to follow him, stopped by the forcefields she had ordered almost immediately. It was slow going, deactivating each barrier before moving to the next one. Several sections over, she came across an unconscious security guard without his phaser. “Garrett to security be advised the Romulan is now armed.”
Unable to tell whether he had gone up or down, Megan moved to the nearby console to access internal sensors and found him approaching Deck 15. With a sigh, she tapped her commbadge once more before quickly beginning to follow him climbing down towards his destination. “Garrett to Bridge, he’s heading for Main Shuttlebay. Seal the external doors and evacuate the main bay area. Once he’s inside, place forcefields on all entrances and exits.” she ordered while climbing down deck by deck as fast as she could.
In the moment of silence during the climb, Megan had a brief surge of guilt and worry for Tamara’s safety. She had been the one to order the counselor to the brig, and if anything happened, the science officer realized she was the one who was responsible. Commander Garrett could only hope that somehow Lieutenant Thompson would be alright.
Despite everything, Nathan had actually found the energy to take a brief shower and change into his sleeping shirt and shorts. Now, he was lying in bed, completely relaxed and fast asleep. He was dreaming of course, which showed by the rapid movement of his eyes.
Freddy had gone out earlier to spend the afternoon with his friends, allowing his father the rest he needed without worrying about him.
Nathan found himself walking in a surprisingly tranquil and colourful park on Romulus, right between the dull, tall grey buildings that made up your typical Romulan city. He had no idea which city it was, but here he was.
He was walking towards a green field, where Jombis was waiting for him. They were, obviously, out on a pickink. "You must go back to the ship," Jombis suddenly said, "you must go back, you can't stay here."
Hurt, Nathan looked down at the younger man. "Why?" he asked.
"You must help me," Jombis answered, "you must go to the shuttlebay. When you get there, you'll understand."
Nathan rose from his bed, his eyes opening but he didn't wake up. From a chair in his bedroom, he grabbed his labcoat and pulled it on. It was a strange sight, considering he wasn't otherwise properly dressed, but he didn't realise as he was actually still asleep.
In one of the pockets he found a hypospray, which he held in one hand. The door to his quarters opened as he aproached and the guards turned to address him, however he had drugged them both before either could react.
Continuing on, Nathan found his way to the shuttlebay without further hindrance. However upon approach to the shuttlecraft, his way was barred. "Medical emergency," Nathan spoke up, "I need to get to the shuttle." Jombis was still speaking to him, encouraging him to enter the shuttle. Had he been properly awake, or if someone had actually shaken him, he wouldn't have entered. As such, however, nobody questioned the validity of a medical emergency claim, and nathan was allowed to continue.
He entered the shuttle as the hatch opened, not realising it closed immediately behind him. "I'm here," Nathan answered the call, "why was I to come here?" He didn't see Thompson lying on the deck of the shuttle; through his sleep and Jombis' possession, he was only aware of the Romulan in the shuttlecraft.
"Yes sir the tetryon particles, I'm pretty sure are coming from a Romulan ship. But look here...Right there. "If you're right those tetryon particles will become charged and we won't care about making repairs," Matt said clearly worried about their situation. An unstable warp engine was dangerous enough and there was no plausible way to get some distance from it.
"Commander, we got a problem.............!"Hayes said before the entire bridge lurched forward causing Matt to fall on his injured ribs.
"Report!" Matt said quickly propping himself up," what the hell just happened?"
"A micro fissure collapsed around the deflector dish," Hayes said clearly injured.
"That's not possible, our safety protocols would have warned us when integrity fell below eighty percent!" Matt screamed over the klaxon.
“Commander Garrett to all hands, Red Alert; we have a Romulan prisoner on the loose with a hostage. Security teams move to intercept. Activate isolation fields.”
"Activate them immediately," Matt ordered as he ran towards his old operations console," Commander Hayes concentrate on discovering why we weren't warned about the integrity field. I'll focus on trying to find the Romulan. Lieutenant, we need to get away from that warp engine as soon as possible."
(Tagert)
“Garrett to security be advised the Romulan is now armed.”
It seemed that the news was getting progressively worse for the crew of the Jefferson. Knowing were the Romulan was heading, Matt ordered a security team down to Deck 15.
“Garrett to Bridge, he’s heading for Main Shuttlebay. Seal the external doors and evacuate the main bay area. Once he’s inside, place forcefields on all entrances and exits.” she ordered while climbing down deck by deck as fast as she could.
"Reynolds to Garrett forcefields are inoperative from Deck 7 through 18, there is nothing we can can do," Matt replied.
"Matt, I'm in Deck 15, I'll see what I can do," Zhukarak said through the comm.
"Sir, please wait for reinforcements, the Romulan is armed and he's shooting to kill," Matt pleaded to no avail, " can we teleport the Romulan back to the brig?"
"No sir, substantial damage was done to the transporters," Hayes reported.
"Dammit, the closest security team are a few seconds away," Hayes," sir we have phaser fire in the shuttle bay!"
"Internal sensors, I need visual!" Matt said frantically hoping the worse had not occurred. What he saw horrified him. Nathan, who was supposed to be confined, was standing over his commanding officer phaser in hand. "Tell me he's not...."
"No sir, we are detecting an Andorian life sign on Deck 15 its very weak," Hayes reported much to Matt's relief.
"Alright, Reynolds to all security teams you are authorize to use lethal force," Matt said as he entered the turbolift," Brigadier Hrisvalar has been critically injured. I have taken command of the Jefferson. If you run into Doctor van Breughel, stun him on sight."
The chirp of the computer informed him that his message had been received by all on the Jefferson. Medical teams were already on Deck 15, but could not enter the shuttlebay. They needed to get to Zhukarak before it was to late.
"Commander Garrett, do what you can but don't get yourself killed," Matt said," the Romulan will try to escape. We think he's working with Nathan. Megan if he blast open the docking doors, you'll have seconds to get out. Please be advised that Zhukarak is severely injured and medical teams cannot get to them."
(Megan)
"Welcome to the worst day of my life," Matt muttered as he exited the lift to sea of security officers.
OOC: Nathan, I had you injure Zhuk. I usually do not use other peoples characters without prior authorization, but we needed a reason to explain his absence.
It had taken far too long to get past her own forcefields, and now Commander Garrett found herself trying desperately to catch up from so far back. There hadn’t been a better option than the forcefields at the time, but Megan felt somewhat silly having been slowed down so much by her own orders. Now as she scrambled down the ladder as quickly as possible, the science officer found herself hoping that semi-mistake didn’t end up creating serious consequences.
Stopping on Deck 14 to access the shuttlebay from the upper level, Megan began to crawl through a Jefferies Tube that would lead to an access port on the walkway. After a couple of turns, the science officer finally came to a hatch at a dead end, which she opened as slowly and quietly as possible and looked out. To her horror, she saw Nathan standing in the middle of the bay with a phaser, over the still figure of the Captain. The doctor was standing unmoving as well, perhaps in shock over what he’d done. Trying to shake off her own shock, Garrett managed to pull herself together and tugged the door almost shut to contact the bridge without being heard.
=/\=Commander Garrett, do what you can but don't get yourself killed. The Romulan will try to escape. We think he's working with Nathan. Megan, if he blasts open the docking doors, you'll have seconds to get out. Please be advised that Zhukarak is severely injured and medical teams cannot get to them.=/\=
The unexpected voice of the first officer through the comm caused Megan to jump slightly, but she recovered and replied, “I will do what I can, Sir. I…am somewhat familiar with this type of situations, but I’ll need comm silence to avoid detection, at least for right now. I’ll try and keep you apprised of what’s going on. Garrett out.”
Falling back on training, Commander Garrett quietly opened the access port once again and slipped down behind several cargo containers. Moving slowly, she made her way across the catwalk to the control tower, which was unmanned most likely as a result of the evacuation order. Staying low, the science officer was pleased to see the controls locked out, but used her authorization codes to reenter the system and try to power down the shuttle the Romulan was in. Unfortunately, the link had been severed, most likely by the intruder to avoid this exact scenario; she would have to resort to plan B, but that shuttle needed to be taken out of the equation.
Quickly shutting down the other shuttles in the bay and heavily encrypting their controls, Megan used the ladder behind the control tower, grasping the side rails and silently slid down to the floor behind more cargo containers. Nathan was facing sideways but didn’t seem to the notice her movement in his peripheral vision, so the Commander pulled out her phaser and hesitated. It was on stun, so the doctor wouldn’t be hurt, but shooting him would alert the Romulan to her presence before the shuttle was shut down. Doctor van Breughel would have to wait.
After reholstering the phaser, Megan began carefully moving between cargo, staying mostly out of sight. The Romulan must have been busy in the shuttle, but Nathan’s dazed and unaware behavior was somewhat surprising. Whatever was causing this, it seemed to be helping him not to notice her. Once she was finally in a position where the shuttle was between her and the doctor, the science officer quietly approached the small vessel and opened the access panel. Within a few moments, the shuttle lost power, and just to be safe, a few power and control lines were physically severed. There was no way they were leaving this way.
Now that the Romulan was most likely aware that someone was here, though not necessarily her, stealth wasn’t as much of an issue and pulling out her phaser, Megan leaped out from behind the shuttle and fired, hitting Nathan in the chest. He slumped to the ground without a word, his phaser hitting the deck and sliding a few feet away. Taking a few more steps, her weapon pointed at the open hatch on the side of the small vessel, Garrett finally spoke, throwing as much authority and power as she could muster behind her voice. “We’ve got you surrounded. I suggest you drop any weapons you might have in there and come out with your hands up. There’s no way you’re getting off this ship.”
Nathan had waited in the shuttle, slumping down in one of the seats for as long as Jombis allowed it. In the moments Jombis wasn’t in his mind, the doctor returned to his previous sleeping state, blissfully unaware of his surroundings as generally he was a sound sleeper, not easily wakened by anything. However when Hrisvalar entered the shuttlebay, Jombis thrust his phaser, set to stun level six, into the still sleeping doctor's hands. kill him he thought kill the andorian
As if hypnotised, which in a sense was what was happening, Nathan rose and walked out of the shuttle. There wasn’t a battle of wills just yet, as the Romulan quite deftly influenced the Human’s actions. The doctor stopped a few feet away from the Andorian commanding officer, his pose unusually relaxed, his eyes unfocussed and his breathing slow and regular.
The Andorian's eyes first widened in surprise at seeing the doctor, then narrowed in annoyance. However, the Andorian’s keen senses told him instantly that something was wrong. Firstly, because he knew the civillian doctor wouldn’t consciously disobey standing orders and secondly because his dislike for phasers was well-known on the Jefferson.
"Doctor.." That's as far as he got, for Nathan had raised the weapon, took aim and fired. He didn’t react when the Andorian fell back, slumping to the deck, blood oozing from the injury the phaser had caused.
The doctor remained standing, phaser held limply in his left hand, swaying slightly on his feet. He never reacted to the movement in the corner of his vision, because he never really saw it. Dreamily, he just stood there, unmoving, not even rushing towards the fallen Andorian because it was all a dream to him, unreal. And the 'memory' of shooting Hrisvalar had long since passed from his attention span.
However, there was a battle of wills going on when the doctor part of him realised something was wrong. It didn’t wake him by a long shot but in his dream he was now battling the Romulan for control. It caused his body to react by switching between relaxing and straining muscles at random. Had Nathan won the battle, he would’ve slumped back to the deck as he had earlier when he was allowed to relax in the shuttle. He was, however currently the weaker party and the Romulan was strong in his control.
He also never noticed the orange beam that shot towards him, hitting him squarely in the chest. It caused him to stumble back, tripping backwards over Hrisvalar’s unmoving body, then he just sagged to the deck, unconscious before he struck the floor.
A little later, after an unknown length of time, he woke in sickbay. Confused, he stared at the ceiling, which he didn't recognise as the pattern in his quarters. The next thing he discovered was that he couldn't move, at all. "Hannah?" he called, his face contorting in pain as the effort of speaking sent pain lancing through his chest. He tried to reach up, but discovered he was held immobilised.
The nurse approached, looking terrified. "Nathan what've you done," she pleaded, "why?" She noticed the confused look on her boss's face, but she didn't understand his confusion. "Why did you shoot him?"
"Shoot...who?" His memories prior to waking up in sickbay, and after going to bed were hazy at best.
"The brigadier," Hannah answered, her voice trembling with emotion. "He's very badly wounded, he might not survive. The EMH will probably need to put him in stasis after he comes out of surgery. You hit him pretty bad."
All colour drained from the doctor's face and he went completely limp in horror. "I shot him?" he whispered, looking up at the nurse. “How?” He didn’t remember ever leaving his quarters, let alone holding a weapon on his commanding officer. He would never be able to do that, unless he was strictly ordered to do so, and even then it would be tough since he didn’t have any security training. He could hold a phaser, and probably find the trigger, but that was that. His shots would go wide, rather than hit an intended target.
"Don't you remember?" Hannah turned briefly, beckoning someone to approach. "Commander, Nathan's awake now. I don't think he's ready for questioning though, I think he's in shock." She turned back. "I'm sorry doctor, I can't help you now." She walked away without looking back.
Nathan met Matt's gaze, recoiling from the anger he saw in the younger man. "What happened?" he dared ask. "Hannah just said I shot the captain, but I don’t understand...” He faltered as Matt’s gaze turned murderous. “He told me to remain in my quarters, you verified those orders, I would never...” He broke off again, then struggled to sit up. Apparently, someone had released the restraining field because he could sit up now.
Resigned, he met Matt’s gaze again. “I’ll submit to whatever punishment you see fit,” he finally whispered, “though I have no memory of the event yet, I’m sure you’ll do what is necessary to see that I do as it is clear from your reaction that I did in fact shoot him.” He felt weak and terrible, though the time spent unconscious had helped him regain a little strength.
Looking past Matt, he saw Counselor Thompson stand a bit further away. She didn’t look too happy but her look was one of sympathy, not condemning him to anything just yet. “Someone will have to care for my son,” he pleaded with Matt, “I don’t want him to know, he wouldn’t understand. Tell him I need to spend some time on my own, that he will need to stay with a friend for a while.” This time, he looked positively frightened. “I won’t lose him over this?” he asked, his voice barely audible. It was his worst fear coming true, to lose custody over his son.
Matt had just received word that more phaser fire had been detected in the shuttle bay and he could only think the worse. Had he sent his science officer to her doom? As he ran towards the doors he could only hope that his fears didn't materialize.
"Computer open shuttlebay doors authorization code Reynolds Zodiac Three Seven," Matt said as he approached the doors. The first thing he saw was Zhukarak and Nathan on the floor clearly injured. "Megan are you alright?"
(Megan)
What he saw immediately prompted him to order the medical teams to do their job and help the injured. From what he gathered, Zhukarak was in very bad shape. Nathan would be fine, but at that moment Matt could have cared less about the civilian doctor.
"Megan, good work," Matt said as security teams joined them," escort this man back to his holding cell. Doctor Thompson do you require any medical attention?"
(Tamara)
"Commander Garrett, good work today," Matt said as he finally allowed his grip on his phaser to loosen," I'll make sure that Starfleet hears about your doings today."
(Megan)
"As you know by now, Brigadier Hrisvalar has been relieved of command due to his injuries," Matt said," so until further notice you are promoted to first officer of the USS Jefferson with all responsibilities that come with command."
(Megan)
"Since these are unusual circumstances, I would prefer if you continued the interrogation of the Romulan," Matt said," your are also authorized by Article 14, Section 31 Paragraph 4 of the Starfleet Charter to use any means necessary to protect this ship. Do you understand what this means?"
(Megan)
"If you're unwilling to do this tell me know and I will interrogate the prisoner," Matt said not believing the words that were coming out of his mouth. He had just authorized the use of torture to obtain information," Commander I cannot afford you much time to think about this. When your ready, I'll be in sickbay talking to our dear doctor."
(Megan)
Matt knew that he was putting a lot of pressure on the young science officer, but he hoped she had enough strength to do what he was asking of her because he didn't know if he did. As Matt marched towards sickbay, reports began to trickle in. Repair teams were mobilized throughout the entire ship and Zhukarak was undergoing emergency surgery.
"How's he doing Hannah?" Matt asked as he entered sickbay.
"Not so well, it will be a miracle if doesn't die on the operation table," Hannah replied.
"Alright, I have already asked for his pet to brought up," Matt said," it's the closest thing he has on board and I know it will make him feel better."
"Alright, but you might want to attend to other things," Hannah said," it might be a while."
"No I'll stay here, I need to talk to Nathan when he wakes up," Matt said with a venomous look in his eyes at his mentioning of the doctor's name. Hannah knew that she would not be able to convince Matt to leave, so she attended the others that had been injured.
After twenty minutes of waiting, Matt finally go the opportunity to ask some questions of their doctor.
"Commander, Nathan's awake now. I don't think he's ready for questioning though, I think he's in shock." She turned back. "I'm sorry doctor, I can't help you now."
"What happened?" he dared ask. "Hannah just said I shot the captain, but I don’t understand...”
Standing that close to Nathan and not beating the hell out of him was taking all of Matt's will power. The fact that he was acting confused infuriated him even more.
“He told me to remain in my quarters, you verified those orders, I would never...” He broke off again, then struggled to sit up.
"You better f$#^ing hope Zhukarak survives," Matt said shaking uncontrollably with anger," cause if he doesn't you'll never see the outside of a Federation prison colony ever again.
“I’ll submit to whatever punishment you see fit,” he finally whispered, “though I have no memory of the event yet, I’m sure you’ll do what is necessary to see that I do as it is clear from your reaction that I did in fact shoot him.”
"You best hope is that he survives and that a telepath on board can verify that the Romulan was having some effect on you," Matt replied in anger. Nathan was adamant that the Romulan was controlling him and Matt couldn't ignore the possibility.
“Someone will have to care for my son,” he pleaded with Matt, “I don’t want him to know, he wouldn’t understand. Tell him I need to spend some time on my own, that he will need to stay with a friend for a while.” This time, he looked positively frightened. “I won’t lose him over this?” he asked, his voice barely audible. It was his worst fear coming true, to lose custody over his son.
"Nathan, for your son's safety I have rescinded your parental rights as of today," Matt said knowing the pain this would cause Nathan," Doctor Thompson and she alone will decide if you will be mentally stable to be with your son again. If you are indeed being manipulated I cannot in good conscious allow you to see Freddy."
(Nathan, Tamara)
"Hannah, get Nathan some clothes," Matt said before turning to face the distraught doctor once again," if everything goes well Freddy will never know this happened. Your treatment will be up to Commander Thompson but his custodial arrangement will be left up to my discretion."
"Nathan, for your son's safety I have rescinded your parental rights as of today," Matt said knowing the pain this would cause Nathan," Doctor Thompson and she alone will decide if you will be mentally stable to be with your son again. If you are indeed being manipulated I cannot in good conscious allow you to see Freddy."
Emotionally drained, the doctor sagged back. "No," he whispered, "please no..." Matt, however seemed resolved on the issue. "Commander...Matt...please, don't do this." Disdraught, he looked up at the human officer. "I'll do anything, please don't take him."
"Hannah, get Nathan some clothes," Matt said before turning to face the distraught doctor once again," if everything goes well Freddy will never know this happened. Your treatment will be up to Commander Thompson but his custodial arrangement will be left up to my discretion."
Nathan took the clothes Hannah handed him and quietly started to dress himself. He realised trying to plead with the visibly angry commander was moot and a waste of breath. He felt weak and confused, understood by now that he had indeed shot the Andorian commanding officer but it irked him that he didn't remember.
He allowed security to keep him on his feet, then allowed them to lead him away. In a daze, he walked with them until they and Commander Reynolds stood outside sickbay. The guards shared a strange look then released the doctor's arms for a moment. Nathan just stared ahead, unresponsive to the sudden release. He saw Matt pull back his arm, saw the shoulder roll but didn't realise what was going on until it was too late to duck. Matt's fist connected soundly with his jaw and he spun back into the wall.
The security officers caught him and held him to his feet, then started to pull him along again. "C'mon doc, we got a nice cell waiting for you," one of them taunted, but quickly fell silent when his partner shot him a dangerous look. A few minutes later, the doctor was released into the confined space of a holding cell.
Nathan sank down on the cot, nursing his bruised jaw. No-one had mentioned Jombis' fate to him, and he didn't even dare to ask. He felt as though he was slowly waking up from one nightmare and walking straight over into another one. Sighing deeply he leaned back, fighting to keep his eyes open. He desperately tried to stay awake, fearing that Jombis might control him once more.
Though, what could happen now that he was boxed in between three walls and a forcefield? If he were to up and walk now, he'd bounce right off the forcefield, risking serious injury. Yet, he still feared going to sleep, and with the latest bad news it was doubtful he could even sleep properly. His worst fear had come true, he was relieved from his parental rights. Freddy was taken from him until further notice.
The doctor buried his face in his hands, finally allowing his tears to flow freely. He was broken, deprived of the one thing he desired most: spending time with his son. And with a serious assault charge hanging over him, as well as his need to prove that he had been possessed, his immediate future didn't look too bright. "I'm sorry," he whispered, to no-one in particular. He wasn't looking forward to spending time with a counselor; he didn't like counselors. He'd spent too much time with them when Freddy was a mere baby, shriks who tried to pick his brain and kept nagging him about how how would single-handedly care for an infant. The nagging about his need to get married...to a woman at that...and more.
Nathan had eventually had enough of it, and at last they'd left him alone once they saw he was devoted in his tasks. Surely Thompson would see too that there was no place safer for the boy than with his father?
Eventually, exhaustion won the battle of wills and the poor doctor drifted off in a deep but restless sleep. However, when he would wake the next time, he'd feel a little more refreshed and a little less tired.
Jombis was in a dark room, he couldn't see. He guessed had been stunned and brought back to his cell, but this room smelled different. It was odd that the federation ship didn't have an automated cleaning system, that would ionize the odder of molded water. He stuck his finger in his eye socket and pushed it to the back of his eye activating a Tal-Shiar covert communication system to be used only before death to send last logs and any pertinent info. Combos moved his pupil over the screen, that was activated by the pupil's movement. He typed his last report for the Surreal. Little did he know that his next orders could not be accomplished and would give away his ships reason for being in the mine field. as he transmitted the message, the door opened to the room. The light from the corridor hurt his eye's and he couldn't see who was here to watch him.
