Section 47 Procedures
You are required to read the following information BEFORE joining Section 47. Starred topics are important facts for new members joining the site.
Section 47 is a RPG/Trivia site set in the Star Trek universe. The main in game sim is set in the 2390s, with a current in sim year of 2394 some ten years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis. We also have games set in the Enterprise and Original Series ERAs, as well as Romulan ship based games. In the game itself you take on the role of a crewmember on a ship, depending on the ship you can be a Starfleet Officer, a Marine, Civilian, Ambassador or Romulan Officer. By answering the weekly trivia questions about the Star Trek universe and Section 47, you rise in rank. Trivia points accumulate to give you a higher rank up to the rank of Commander First Class.
* Joining Section 47
Anyone with a basic knowledge of Star Trek and an understanding of the English language is welcome to join the game. To join, fill in the form S47 Join Page.
* Identity Disclosure Requirement
It is now required that ALL members disclose ALL character's names and emails (if separate emails are used) to the Personnel Officer. You may do this by indicating it on the Join Form or by emailing the PO at s47-Personnel@yahoogroups.com. This is an absolute requirement, no exceptions. This is so the PO may know who you are to prevent placement of more than one of your characters on the same ship and for compliance with site rules concerning command positions.
* Academy
Once we receive your application form (please allow several days for processing), you will be forwarded a welcome letter via email. Within the welcome letter, you will find valuable links, one of which is for Starbase Conqueror (Message Board Forum). This is where you must first report in for duty Starbase Conqueror.
You will need to create a Message Board Profile for your character. After you have reported in to Starbase Conqueror, you will be assigned to a vessel in the fleet and given the rank of Acting Ensign. You will spend around four weeks as an Acting Ensign, while your CO judges your performance and awards you simming points and decides on when you are ready to graduate. While this process is under way, all your trivia points will be held by the Ranks Officer and awarded upon your graduation. After successful completion of a training mission, (requirements for graduation include answering the weekly trivia, submitting a biography of your character and posting several times a week during a training mission) you will be awarded your trivia gained rank. Every effort will be made to place you in your first choice position if one is available in the active fleet. Special Note: You must first graduate your primary character before creating a secondary one.
* Rank
Section 47's ranking system is based primarily on correct answers given to the weekly trivia, for the ranks of Ensign up to Commander First Class. (Promotion above Commander First Class is by merit only and decided by the Personnel Officer in conjunction with the CSS.) While you are in the training phase, your trivia points are held and accumulated. (please refer to the Welcome Letter you were sent via email.) All points are totalled and your rank awarded upon graduation and fulfillment of all Academy requirements.
It is now also possible for members to receive promotions based on their simming ability rather than trivia scores. It applies only to those who display the highest level of simming commitment but don't wish to answer trivia, and is therefore not the standard method of progression. Candidates for meritorious promotion must be nominated by a superior officer and supported by their Commanding Officer. The decision on whether to allow promotion is arrived at by the Personnel and Ranks Officers, with opinions sought from relevant officers as necessary.
* Reporting in on a ship
Once you have received approval as an Acting Ensign, you will be notified by the Personnel Officer as to your ship assignment via email. It is your next duty to report in to the ship's Captain who will then give you your orders. The ship's Captain will also add you to the ship's email group at Yahoo Groups.
* Missions
Most ship's in the fleet sim on the Message Boards with a few who play by email. The Captain of your ship is responsible for creating and maintaining a mission. It is up to the Captain's discretion whether or not your ship will participate in a squad or fleet-wide mission. The Captain will give a mission outline to the crew and, in turn, the crew is responsible for the working of their specific department.
* Mission ideas
If you have an idea for a mission, please submit it to your captain. Please do so by private email and get his/her approval first. If the captain's address isn't public, you can use the mail list to either ask for the address or to ask him to contact you. If both of you don't want to have your email address public, the Section Admiral will pass the appropriate information to each party.
* Stardates
All stardates will be of the form YY.MMDD. As of January, 2005, the sim is set in the year 2391 (so the stardate for 10 January 2005 is 91.0110). New Year's Day, 2006 will be 92.0101. Don't worry about the passing of time in the sim. One day in the sim can be several days in real life.
* Message boards
All members should frequently check the Section 47 Information News message board located on the Message Boards forum to ensure they stay informed of important information regarding site matters. S47 Proboards Home (Once you have graduated from the Academy, your email address will be added to our announce email group to keep you up to date on changes, position openings, fleet representative elections, etc. but to stay totally current, the News board is a great resource.)
Each ship has a message board located on our forum. As a member, you will be able to post on your ships message board as well as the General boards.
* Problems
If you have a problem, please report it immediately being careful to use the proper chain of command. Your problem should first be discussed with your ship's First Officer/Executive Officer. If the FO fails to solve your problem satisfactorily, you may then ask the Commanding Officer/Captain. If you still do not feel your problem has been solved, you may move on to requesting an answer from the Squadron Commander, the Fleet Commander and, if not yet satisfied, the Section Admiral. Most of the time, you will find that your FO or CO can solve the problem. Any questions you may have for the Command Staff may be posted on the Command message boards. The CSS members also provide their email addresses throughout the site and the Message Boards should you feel the need to contact them. The JAG Department and Chief Justice should only be contacted as a last resort once you've exhausted every avenue of the chain of command and only in the most severe forms of disciplinary problems.
* Transfers
If you want to transfer to another ship or another position you must first fill out the transfer form located on the main page. Don't forget to inform the Personnel Officer as to why you want to transfer because you must have a valid reason. You must also inform your captain that you desire to leave your present ship and must get his/her approval before you transfer. You should not report in to your new assignment until you have heard that the transfer is approved by all parties and announced by the PO. When you have been placed on a new ship, you will be subscribed to that ship's group email list. We will not unsubscribe you from your old ship's list because, frequently, players want to follow what's happening on their old ship. If you do wish to unsubscribe, you can do so by visiting www.yahoogroups.com and following the onscreen instructions.
* Resigning
If, for any reason, you want to stop playing, you may resign. All we ask is that you inform us of your resignation so we know you have stopped. You have the option of placing your character into Trivia Only status and reactivating it should you ever desire to return. You are always welcome to come back in the future.
* Changing your Character's Name
If a member wishes to change their name for whatever reason, they should first contact the Personnel Officer, with a request for a name change. The Personnel Officer will then make a decision on if the request is to be granted or not. If the request is granted, the Personnel Officer will inform the necessary CSS departments (Ranks, Bios, and Commendations), and the date of the name change shall be recorded in the members bio. The member's new name will then be used in all future assignments and commendations.
Note: In the event that a member decides to kill off their character and replace it with a new character, they may not transfer the deceased characters rank or commendations.
If permission is granted for a character name change, then the member should include a note in their proboards signature stating the previous character name. This is to allow everyone to be able to see that a name change has occurred, and avoid confusion.
* Retention of Meritorious Ranks
Retirement:
The member who holds a meritorious rank and retires their character will go to the Hall of Fame, if warranted, and this character can not be reactivated. They are welcomed to post in the sim but as a civilian or as retired Admiral/Commodore/etc. These individuals will not be able to reactivate their rank. *Returning members who have retired characters before this policy is enacted will be allowed to fully re-instate their character even if they are presently in the Hall of Fame. (The only exception to this would be that of the Retired Section Admirals.) The same criteria listed below in the Criteria for Returning Officers would apply to their re-instatement.
Trivia Only/Starfleet Reserves: Members who resign or quit the sim portion will be able to return with the meritorious rank they held at the time of their departure from the sim if they meet the set criteria and are approved by majority vote of the CSS.
Inactive Trivia Only:
Members who have resigned or quit the sim portion and have since stopped answering Trivia will be able to return with their meritorious rank intact providing they meet the set criteria and are approved by majority vote of the CSS. Length of Service, however, will not be granted during any inactive period.
Criteria for all Returning Officers wishing to retain their meritorious rank: Members wishing to be reinstated must first fill out and send a S47 Join Form to indicate their interest in returning with their meritorious rank. Meritorious rank will be re-instated on an individual basis by majority vote of the CSS.
It should also be noted that any returning member that retired, resigned, quit or went to Trivia Only status under controversial, dishonorable or shadowy, disciplinary circumstances could be denied re-instatement of their meritorious rank. It could also be decided by majority vote of the CSS to consider demotion upon a member's return should the circumstances he/she resigned/quit/retired under warrant it.
It is also important to note that any returning member is not guaranteed a command grade position upon their return and their name could go to the bottom of the waiting list for such positions. Conversely, it is possible that a returning member of meritorious rank could be given a command grade position if the voting majority of the CSS feels there is an immediate need and no better applicants are available.
Special Provision: The occasion could exist where a returning member may have to take a lesser rank upon their return. If given a command position where their departing rank is higher than that of their new Commanding Officer they may be asked to accept the rank directly below their COs. This would be strictly on a voluntary basis for the particular position offered. Refusing a position and keeping their rank will not affect their future assignments within the fleet.
Requirements for Command-grade Positions:
The First Officer/XO and Captain of a ship are referred to as command grade positions. To obtain a CO/FO position, you must first be of the rank of Lt. Commander or higher. You must also be an active simmer who exhibits enthusiasm for the ship you currently serve on and Section 47 as a whole. It is also required that you complete both Phase One and Phase Two of the Command Training Course. Phase One of the CTC is a seven part email tutorial which you may request from the Personnel Department. *It should also be noted that there are qualities and qualifications necessary to command a ship that are intangible and difficult to describe. It is possible to complete all the requirements for a command grade post and still be denied a CO/FO post due to factors such as disciplinary problems, lack of leadership skills and general inactivity, to name just a few. All command grade posts must meet the approval of the Personnel Officer and the CSS before they are assigned.
Captain's duties are:
Run the sim on a ship.
Look after any related web pages the ship might have.
Get your officers to report when they are on leave.
Arrange for officers who are not taking part to be removed from your ship.
Solve any small problems that your ship might be having.
Inform the Personnel Officer for any changes in personnel or e-mail addresses.
Reply to any requests for information from officers in the Command Staff.
Recommend a candidate for First Officer. The Personnel Officer must accept the recommended officer before it can be made official. Officers must hold a rank of at least Lt. Cmdr. and have successfully completed Phase One and Phase Two of the Command Training Course. (See Requirements for Command Grade Positions above for more details.) Both Phase One and Two are required to be completed before any member may assume a FO or CO position.)
Captains are also required to send a regular update (approx. once a month), to their Squadron Commander. Reports should contain a list of active officers, inactive officers, people on leave, changes in e-mail addresses, (brief) mission report and anything else you consider important.
When the captain is on leave, they should make sure that the First Officer is able to perform these duties. They should also inform everyone on their ship and their Squadron Commander that they will be on leave. Should a Captain go on leave, they should inform their ship, Squadron Commander, Fleet Commander and the Personnel Officer of the expected duration before they go. Failure to do so could result in removal from command of their ship. Squadron commanders
It is the job of a Squadron Commander (in addition to the normal responsibilities of a Captain), to:
Make sure that Captains give full reports and check on the status of the crews if there are no reports.
Make sure that all Captains under their command are active.
Encourage active simming on their ships.
Pass on the reports sent to them by the Captains to their Fleet Commander.
Forward information about officers on leave and changes in email address to the Personnel Officer and Fleet Commander. Further questions
If you still have questions, please visit the FAQ page. If you still have questions, please do not hesitate to email the Section Admiral, Paul Drew.
