I thought I'd create a little post where people could post possible mottos or quotes for the ship's dedication plaque.
The most famous of these is, of course, "To boldly go where no one has gone before."
Just any quotes you have heard or bits from poems or mottos etc. Throw 'em in here.

The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die. -Edward Kennedy
In skating over thin ice, our safety is in our speed.- Ralph Waldo Emerson
I lie the keendy quote, but the emerson one is cute.

I think one ship already has Emerson doesn't it?
Probably would fit the Raven better:
'Get thee back into the tempest and the Night's Plutonian shore' -Edgar Allan Poe, the Raven.
Obvious link between space and the night's Plutonian shore.

Tehn use the kennedy one. Or have two quotes by the same person- it's not unheard of.

Or possibly something in Latin:
8. Adversus incendia excubias nocturnas vigilesque commentus est. - Against the dangers of fires, he [Augustus] conceived of the idea of night guards and watchmen.
9. Appareo Decet Nihil Munditia? - Is It Not Nifty? (this one would be really funny, especially if we left it untranslated on the dedication plaque)
10. "Audaces fortuna iuvat" - Fortune favors the bold. --Virgil
11. "Caelum videre iussit, et erectos ad sidera tollere vultus" - He bid them look at the sky and lift their faces to the stars. --Ovid

I know i am not one of the designers, but I have an idea for a quote: Do, or Do Not; There is No Try. ~ Yoda.
Does it have to be a real person's quote?
If so i have some of those too:
I am not afraid… I was born to do this. ~ Joan of Arc
"Prepare your mind to receive the best that life has to offer." ~ Ernest Holmes
The trouble with so many of us is that we underestimate the power of simplicity. We have a tendency it seems to over complicate our lives and forget what's important and what's not. We tend to mistake movement for achievement. We tend to focus on activities instead of results. And as the pace of life continues to race along in the outside world, we forget that we have the power to control our lives regardless of what's going on outside. ~ Robert Stuberg
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Nothing in latin please! I like that kind of thing for some things, but the quotes have always been inspring or cute (and relitivly short)
One put up some ones I really like (1, 2, 5, 6) and I still like the Ed Kennedy one.

If you put a quote by Jon Bon Jovi on the plaque, I will personally blow the ship out of the sky. Just a friendly warning.
I could come up with many quotes, but we have some pretty good ones here so I see no reason to complicate things further. I also like ONE's no. 11, but there are others that would sound good too. I suggest we keep to quoting people of historical or literary renown.

"The only rule is: there are no rules"
I don't really like the idea of quoting a Star Trek episode. Unless they said it in some kind of recorded medium, the chances of it becoming historical are slim even in this timeline. I don't have a problem with latin, but I agree that the simple ones are usually the best.
Perhaps the quote should depend on the name though?

I'm curious of how it would reflect on the ship. Do you mean by what it's mission is, and would we make up such a quote, or would we find one that suits it?

Well, I reckon a motto is found after a ship's been through a couple of missions. One then knows the typicals and quirks of the ship.......take that into account, the crew, and the ship name/class and find something that would fit. In my case, I would probably go looking around something that has to do with a volcano.....since Vesuvius is a volcano in Italy <or was it one of it's islands? I'm horrid at topography> ~Commodore Sonak~ (had forgotten I wasn't logged on as Sonak )

Vesuvius is the volcano in the bay of Naples. It was famous for the AD79 eruption which buried Pompeii, Stabia and Herculaneum and the eruption was well accounted by Pliny the Younger in one of his letters. He viewed it from across the bay whilst his father, Pliny the Elder, took his contigent of warships across the bay to help evacuate Pompeii. Unfortunately, the elderly Pliny was too old and died in the poisonous atmosphere inland south of Pompeii. He was probably trying to find more people to evacuate.
The bay of Naples is now home to several million inhabitants living within the lethal blast radius. Unfortunately for them the same sort of buildup that caused the AD79 eruption's deadly effects has built up again. No evacuation plan can be made since the city's design doesn't lend itself to such. Besides, unless the tremors are picked up at the earliest possible stage, the pyroclastic flow is simply too fast to outrun. Don't invest in property futures there.
Also, ship mottos are given when they're commissioned. However, I believe ships are given an uneventful test run before that to make sure they're safe.

But they are commisioned after the uneventful impulse run- you can find details of that in the TNG manual. they have basic systems and a specal bridge that can support itself, and that's al that's manned. they test the basic systems, with another ship right next to it, wiating in case of an emergency. Wehn they get back to the construction yards, they are commisioned with the New bridge instillation. They get their warp core a few weeks later, and then go for a warp shakedown, and then the fianl commisining, with teh Wine bottle and all.
I don't know if we'll be running sims on the impulse and warp shakedowns- they're rather boring.
as for the quote, I like The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives and the dreams shall never die. -Edward Kennedy, the first one I posted because it reflects starfleet and 47. None of the ideas will ever die or wear out. It speaks to the very idea of star trek.
