Tamara was speechless. Not due to fear or out of happiness, but from surprise.
"I understand your position. I wasn't hurt by your actions, just to let you know." Deep down she always questioned his harsh responses to her, and maybe she had been hurt in the immediate implications of her uselessness that she felt, but she never held that resentment.
"I was requested by Starfleet to be on this ship. They didn't say way, nor would I request that I be told why, lest my biases be set before I began." She stood considering her avenues of thought before continuing, "I'm beginning to see, after spending so much time with your crew, what my purpose here can be."
Zhuk proceeded by asking for reports on his crew.
"Do I have reports?" she tilted her head up and laughed at the question. "I have more reports on your crew than you have time to talk about. Right now, though, everything seems to have calmed down."
She took a drink and continued.
"My request to see you... or Matt ... was because I wished to clarify my assignment. I have done a profile of the culture in our mission, with the help of J'varr," Tamara handed him a padd. "I was unsure if I was to go to the surface or not."
She politely waited for a response as she ran the tip of her finger around her glass.

"Brigadier, we'll be ready to departe within the hour," Matt said after Zhukarak had finished telling them the good news. Matt didn't know what Zhukarak had been planning but he immediately agreed with his decision. There was no one better for the position of second officer," I'll have that report ready for you within twenty minutes."
Knowing that the impromptu meeting had now concluded, Matt returned Megan's smile and exited the ready room. His report would take only a few minutes, so Matt decided that he would stay on the bridge until Zhukarak returned to his rightful place.
"Commander T'Ress, prepare for departure, I want us out of here within the hour," Matt said as he approached the operations console.
(T'Ress)
"Commander Garrett, I'm reading all systems go, what about you?" Matt asked of the still smiling science officer.
(Megan)
"Lt. Van Horn, how are tactical and security?" Matt asked of the new CTSO.
(Van Horn)
With all systems ready for take off, Matt contacted the Fang's executive officer. He quickly informed her of the change of command aboard the Jefferson but that she shouldn't worry. Letting the Fang's XO get her ship ready for departure, Matt concluded the short conversation and began working on his report once again.

He needed to be on the bridge in minutes, but there was much to be done. Michael had let his duties slip a little since the doctor's recent occurrence; he was genuinely worried about Nathan and felt horrible about there last argument, even though they had worked through it. That was all said and done though, the lieutenant needed to focus and get back to work. The Brigadier was back on board and they lacked a proper introduction to one another, and the same thing went for the new SMO, G'Rowk.
=/\= Van Horn to G'Rowk =/\= He spoke into his com badge =/\= I would like to request a meeting with you at your earliest convenience. =/\= Michael double tapped his com badge and said (Tag: G'Rowk)
=/\= Van Horn to Brigadier Zhukarak, I realize that we have not personally met and I wish to do so in order to clarify my duties for this particular mission, and a little social interaction in general. =/\= (Tag: Zhuk)
Now that he had set those meetings in motion there was one last thing before heading to the bridge; something he had been meaning to do his first day of duty. So he heading towards the turbolift stopping first at the Brig and then Secondary Armory, which supplied security with their weapons, unless they needed a lot more than enough to supply just the security staff. Then they went down to deck 20 to the Main Armory. It was the Brig that the man he was looking for was located in, Michael had just stopped by the Secondary Armory to pick up his phaser.
"Ensign Orlov, come here a minute." Van Horn said stepping into the Brig, "I have rearranged the duty roster and I have you scheduled to ook into the condition of the ships ablative armor systems. If it needs repairing make the call to Engineering."
"But sir, I don't mean any disrespect by this, but couldn't that be checked at your station on the bridge or by a member of Engineering?" The younger of the two men asked.
"That is a valid question, Lucas, and yes you are correct however sometimes it is good for a senior officer to give a member of his team a few learning opportunities. This is your chance to get more familiar with the other aspects of security and tactical. Oh and by the way the other reason why I want you to look into this personally," Michael handed a data pad to the ensign between words, "was the fact that I could not find anywhere in the ships logs, the information stating whether or not our ablative armor was replaced at the last space station that offered that service. It is quite strange, perhaps ops or engineering would know why we can't find such a log."
Michael ended his lengthy explanation of the ensigns new assignment with a quick, 'report back to me' , and ran for the turbolift.

He was one of the few on the ship that she actually felt she could turn to if she ever needed someone....
T'Ress purred softly with a nod, indicating his pleasure to have helped. "When we do arrive, if I could ask you to join me on the surface, when transport times comes, that would be most appreciative I assure you, murr. I would certainly need someone whom is able to handle the more psychological aspect while I do the anthropological."
"I think I have all I need, Mr. T'ress," She patted him on the back. "Thanks."
Purring gently, he looked for a moment to her with a nod as he finally went off to finish his business.
------------------
Later, T'Ress resumed his duties aboard the bridge as the Chief of Engineering. Working at his console, he sighed softly and shook his head down at the board. Yawning in typical, feline fashion, he awaited any further command to be issued to him.
"Commander T'Ress, prepare for departure, I want us out of here within the hour," Matt said as he approached the operations console.
"Aye sir, murr!" Came the excited response. Finally, he was able to do something. Moving his paws over the console once more, he started up the automated core system. It was certainly not going to be a cold start, of course, but the engine reactor core was not going to come online immediately. Rather, it would be a few hours until its automated system could bring it to full bare.
"Sir, I should have it ready in two hundred minutes. Is that an acceptable amount of time?"

Hours later, somewhere during the ships 'middle of the night', Nathan woke, feeling better and more rested. He turned over a few times, before sighing to himself and sitting up. Having just barely done so, he looked up to see the door to his bedroom slide open, a dark frame visible in the doorway, casting a long shadow into the room.
"Who's there?"
Jayden walked into the room. "Lights, low," he ordered as he approached. "Your monitor told me you woke up," he offered with a smile, pointing at the small device.
"Ah." Nathan lay back down and pulled the bedcovers up a little higher. "And you are here...why?"
"Why, to look after you, of course." Jayden chuckled as he say down on the bed's edge. "Someone has to, if you won't do it yourself. You need to take things easier Nathan, you work yourself too hard. Surely that second heart attack was a signal you can't ignore?" The marine put a hand on the doctor's arm as a sign of comfort, but just as quickly retracted his hand when he spotted the doctor's discomfort. "I'm sorry."
When Jayden rose, Nathan sat back up. "Well, I'm awake now, and I don't think I can sleep again." Looking sideways he spotted the ball of yarn and the two needles, then smiled. "But there's something else I can learn to do now," he chuckled as he rose from the bed.
The doctor picked up the ball and needles, then held it up to the marine. "J'Varr gave me this a few hours ago, and I asked him what to do with it. Now I know."
"Just as well you relax," Jayden warned, "because I'll sedate you just as easily. Doctor's orders you know."
"Indeed," Nathan replied as he got himself dressed, ignoring the other man's slight smile. "You just might at that," he added as he walked out into the living area. "Now...how do I start this?"
Jayden studied the yarn and needles, then shrugged. "I've no idea. Bit of a women's thing if you ask me...but you could consult the computer?"
A little later, and even more attempts later, Nathan finally managed to get the hang of it. "This is fun," he chuckled, indicating his handiwork. "And I know just what I'll be doing with this too." Soon enough, Jayden's presence was altogether forgotten as the doctor busied himself with his new 'hobby'. He found it oddly relaxing, even though he needed to concentrate on what he was doing, which showed by the tip of his tongue sticking out of his mouth at the corner.
The marine just watched from a little distance, pleased that the doctor at least wasn't thinking about his duties or even the upcoming mission. Now, however it was his turn to doze off as he started to relax himself.
Several hours later, Nathan examined his work and smiled. "Commander T'Ress, do you have a minute?" he queried as he tapped his combadge, knowing it was at least very early in the morning. "I've something to show you, could you stop by? Oh, and my sonic shower is acting up, perhaps you could take a look?"
In his hands he held a brightly coloured hat, with two openings where a feline's ears would fit. He would gift it to the chief engineer, who had proven to be one of his few but valuable friends aboard the ship. And...he would have the latest gossip too, as the feline could be quite chatty if he wanted to be. Because he wasn't allowed to leave his own quarters just yet, he grabbed at every opportunity to learn more.

Matthew was dissapointed that the Jefferson would not be able to leave for another three or so hours. Zhukarak had wanted to leave port alongside the Fang, but that was not going to happen. Admiral Drew and his flagship would be a few hour ahead of the Jefferson.
"Commander T'Ress, is there anyway to jumpstart the engine?" Matt asked of his chief engineer," I don't want the Fang to get to far ahead of us."
(T'Rees)
"Alright, keep me updated on your work," Matt said as he walked inside his office," report to me in an hour."
(T'Rees)
"Computer download all recent information on Dorvan V accessed by Commander Matthew Reynolds," Matt said as he approached his computer console," include the report sent to Admiral Drew."
"Downloading now"
Zhukarak's arrival meant that the Jefferson was now commanded by her rightful captain. Even though it was nice being boss, Matt realized rather quickly that he was not prepared for the center seat permantely. Luckily for him he was being taught by the best in the fleet. In his mind there was no one better than Zhukarak Hrisvalar and it no longer mattered that he was a marine and not a Starfleet officer.
"Download complete"
Turning his attention to the forthcoming report, Matt diligently worked to report his prelimanary findings on the tragedy on Dorvan V. He knew that Zhukarak had heard it before but hopefully he would be able to provide more insight into the situation. Taking only fifteen minutes to complete his report, Matt decided that he would indulge a bit and enjoy an ice cold lemonade.
"Commander Reynolds, all supply shuttles have made thier runs, the ship is fully stocked and ready to go," the quartermaster reported over the comm.
"Alright, prepare all disaster relief as soon as possible," Matt ordered as he took a drink of his lemonade," inform Doctor van Breughel when all the medical supplies are ready to be deployed."
Enjoying his lemonade to the fullest, Matt asked for a second glass before returning the bridge. He would give Zhukarak his report and then go down to engineering. Hopefully he would be able to help J'Varr finding a solution to their cold start.

"Commander T'Ress, is there anyway to jumpstart the engine?" Matt asked of his chief engineer," I don't want the Fang to get to far ahead of us."
"I am not sure if there is sir...wait. Wait, I do know one method. I could force the software, there is no physical way to do this - only by the automatons that are incorporated into the system, murr. I could force the software to create a deeper feed."
"Alright, keep me updated on your work," Matt said as he walked inside his office," report to me in an hour."
"Acknowledged, sir. Murr....computer! Increase plasma flow to four hunderd parts per million."
=^= That is an unsafe designation =^=
"There is no safety concern, computer. Authorization, T'Ress-alpha-niner."
=^= Acknowledged =^=
He then heard his communicator.
"I've something to show you, could you stop by? Oh, and my sonic shower is acting up, perhaps you could take a look?"
The feline purred brightly as he tapped his communicator, "Of course, Doctor. I shall attend to you in a moment. If you will please allow me to gather my tools, I shall be there in just a moment."
He sighed softly and gathered up the aforementioned this before moving into the turbolift. As he did so, he tapped the controls with his paws, controlling the turbolift by touch rather than by voice in the way that, for whatever reason, he had found himself always preferring to do it.
Stretching softly by placing his tool box into his paws, and waving it above his head, he finally exited and walked into the room that he was requested into. Though it probably would have been polite to, as Engineer the computer immediately allowed him access without the normal request from any internal occupants considered that he had been called out on a problem.
As he did so, he soon felt the hat go straight over his ears in the way that it was designed to do. He then looked up at it as best he could whilst his tail showed his amused emotions. "I take it that you wanted to see me for other reasons then repairing your sonic shower, but rather to chat. As you know how much I like to talk, I am of course open to it, murr. Was there something that you wanted to hear about? Or was it the rest of the crew? The outside purrhaps? I do not mean to patronize in any way, of course."

"Well, Counselor, I was thinking that you join me in the boarding of the USS Lion when we arrive. We need to investigate why that ship discharged its weapons...was it a malfunction or perhaps sabotage. Your keen insights will be most helpful there."
Counselor Thompson looked thoughtful up the walls. "Yes, I understand."
"Good. In fact, you'll be my right hand man, so to speak, during the entire mission. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to attend to our departure."
They both rose from their seats as Zhuk allowed his counselor to lead the way, exiting the ready room.
It didn't take long for Zhukarak to find out how long it was going to take for them to get on their way. Zhuk wasn't happy about it, but his XO was already on top of it so there was nothing for him to do about it...for now.
=/\= Van Horn to Brigadier Zhukarak, I realize that we have not personally met and I wish to do so in order to clarify my duties for this particular mission, and a little social interaction in general. =/\=
"Lieutenant, at the moment I have no time for SOCIAL INTERACTION, and you shall be briefed on your duties as time permits. In the meantime, get acquainted with our new SMO and together make up an investigative detail for this mission, as well as security teams." Zhukarak needed to get this mission going.

The doctor had the grace to look embarassed, though he couldn't hide his own bemusement. "I'm glad you like the hat, I spent all night on it," he chuckled, earning a dirty look from Jayden. He snared at the feline's tail as had become a bit of a custom, then gently stroked the fur. Somehow, that actually seemed to help him relax too. He looked down when a soft mewing sound drew his attention. "And I see my duo like you as well," he smiled, before schooling his expression back to embarassment.
"My sonic shower actually is acting up," he acknowledged, showing the chief engineer the way to his bathroom, rolling his eyes at his companion as he did so. Jayden playfully stuck his tongue out but didn't cease to look mock-angry. The Betazoid actually experienced what Humans would call jealousy as he watched the doctor interact with the Caitian.
Nathan meanwhile had shown J'Varr the problem, then smiled ruefully. "And yes, I'd like to know what goes on out there. Being sent off duty does have it's downsides." This time his smile widened as he placed his hand on he cat's shoulder. "And yes, you do like to talk, you're a wealth of information when you want to be. And I don't find it annoying or patronising at all. Don't worry!"
"Are you two quite done yet!" came Mitchell's call from the livingroom. "In case you forgot Nathan, you're supposed to rest! And don't make me come in there and sedate you!"
Nathan rolled his eyes, though he hadn't missed the undertone in his friend's voice. Sighing, he patted the feline on the shoulder once more. "When you're done, and you can...stay a while to talk? I'd like to hear the latest gossip from you." He walked back into the livingroom. "What do you think you're doing?" he hissed under his breath as he approached the marine. "You forget that you too are a guest in my quarters, you don't tell me what I can and cannot do, is that clear?"
Jayden merely shrugged, though the emotions were plain on his face. "Are you jealous?" Nathan suddenly asked, as if all of a sudden he realised what was going on.
"Nah," Jayden shot back, "what's there to be jealous of?" He wrapped his arm around the other man's waist, looking a little disappointed when he stepped away, looking confused. "See?" Jayden added.
Nathan looked even more confused but he didn't comment on it, his mind reeling. He was aware by now of the Betazoid's affection towards him, and he was sometimes responding to it, but not right now. Something was wrong, and he couldn't understand, yet. "Perhaps," he started slowly, "we should ah.."
He didn't get any further as Jayden silenced him with a single look, then pointed towards the hypospray on the table. "Once he's gone, after your gossip, you're going back to sleep for a few hours. And then we'll get you to sickbay to see if you can go on that away mission. Capice?"
Nathan merely nodded and settled himself on the couch, waiting for the feline to re-appear and start his tellings.

"I'm glad you like the hat, I spent all night on it..."
The feline purred softly, "Ah, so you made it? The yarn that I had symbolically replicated for you has certainly begun to catch on a hobby then? Murr..." His tail then twitched gently in response to the actions that had been occurring thus far. It had certainly not been a most normal day, to say the least.
"Why, Doctor, do you appear so embaressed?" The feline himself seemed rather bemused with the situation, though largely because of the aforementioned embaressement that was occurring to the other side of the conversation as he was watching.
"My sonic shower actually is acting up.."
T'Ress nodded with a second flick of the tail, "Alright, then. I apologize for my instant dismissal of the condition then. I realized that I should have thought much more highly of your requests. Not to say that you are tearing me away from any pertinent work above deck."
"And yes, I'd like to know what goes on out there. Being sent off duty does have it's downsides."
The engineer looked up, shaking his head as he did so, "I would strongly contend to disagree with you, murr. They owe me some time. Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring was what I was torn away from before." He smiled in his own rueful fashion, "I hope you know that I intend to get my lost leave back. It will not be a well sitting remark with me."
"And yes, you do like to talk, you're a wealth of information when you want to be. And I don't find it annoying or patronising at all. Don't worry!"
The feline nodding, glad to hear those remarks as he reached down to the sonic shower's access panel. He took his tool set, allowing himself to attack the problem with a variety of impulses that utilized a similar technology to the one that was used in the shower itself. These sonic impulses were a rather untested condition. However, unlike a doctor testing something on a patient, T'Ress could not kill a machine. Therefore, he did not fear such reprocussions.
The feline then rose his eyes, "Perhaps I should not stay. It would seem that you have other conditions that require attention."
Nathan merely nodded and settled himself on the couch, waiting for the feline to re-appear and start his tellings.
As the feline calmed himself however, he rose a brow, "Are you sure that it is for the best that I stay?"

Tom awoke mid-day. He showered, dressed for work and then headed for the shuttle bay. Supply shuttles were rather large and bulky. The engines were geared lower to help deal with the stress of a space to planetary landing, but even though the landing was smooth it took thrice the time to build up to full thrusters, so it was going to be a pretty slow go for the first fifteen minuets or so. Tom tapped his comm. badge. "Lt. Tagert to Ensign Chen." "Go ahead Sir." "Are you through pre flight yet?" "Just finished sir." Tom smirked as he heard Chen punching in the last few diagnostic exit codes. "OK. I want you to inform the doc that we're ready for him, and go ahead and call the Marines wile your at it." Yes sir. "One more thing Chen... When were talking shuttle to shuttle, no more "Sirs", I'm Red leader and your Wedge. Got it? Good."Chen touched comm. badge and held it for three seconds. The sound of the all call chimed all over the ship followed by, "Now hear this, now hear this Medical and Marine teams report to the shuttle bay." Tom called back to Chen, shuttle to shuttle and said. "Ensigns always playing with the comm. system. That was good guys, let's see if we can't beat that time. One mess-up and the Doc is gonna have all our asses. Computer. Restart Planetary Aid Drill sequence one. Red leader to Wedge. You are weapons free, eyes open."

By the next day Megan was feeling more like herself and less...emotional. In fact, she almost felt a bit embarrassed by how excited she had gotten and how clearly it had shown. The science officer considered herself more controlled than to allow something like happiness or pride to take over like that. Calm, cool, and collected – that’s how she preferred to think of herself. Fortunately, Commander Garrett didn’t think too many people had noticed her change in mood, at least she hoped so. Having already completed her usual morning routine, the new second officer was on her way from her office to the bridge. It was nice to spend a little extra time in the office and having two science officers on the bridge certainly couldn’t hurt.
As the turbolift doors slid open, the Commander stepped out onto the bridge and headed straight for her station, which was quickly relinquished by the duty officer there. Other officers and crewmembers were bustling around in preparation for departure, and the air was filled with the anticipation of getting underway. Hoping that the warp core situation was resolved and they would soon begin the mission, the science officer verified that the sensors and all scientific related systems were functioning properly. It seemed that power levels were rising steadily, which was hopefully indicative of the warp core powering up and stabilizing. The final word on the condition of the Jefferson would need to come from J’Varr though.
Megan hadn’t heard any word from Hannah regarding the doctor’s condition, but she hoped that was because Nathan was still sleeping. The man needed rest, that much was obvious, and it would do him good to get as much of it as possible while they were on route to the Dorvan system. Once there, as long as he was in no immediate danger, his expertise would be required, but until then, it was a good idea for him to save his energy. As soon as they were ready, Commander Garrett assumed they would be traveling at near maximum warp given the critical situation. She just hoped they would be able to begin their journey very soon.

OOC: warning, novel ahead!
IC: Nathan rolled his eyes when Tagert's voice resounded over the shipwide intercom. "I bet you a crate of yarn that he didn't read the latest medical reports," he scowled, while eying the feline across him. Jayden had sat down beside him, like a watchful mother hen. "Anyway..the latest gossip?"
The feline raised his tail slowly at Jayden, lowering his ears to his head. Turning back to face Nathan, he nodded carefully, "Are you sure you want to hear about the ship?"
"Oh yes!" Nathan answered quickly, smiling brightly. "I've been stuck either in sickbay or here at home. I'm not allowed to go anywhere!" He scowled at Jayden, who merely raised an eyebrow in response.
"Murr, lets see. What is new exactly...Tamara was feeling that she did not matter to us anymore, Zhuk is being...Zhuk, we're supposed to be leaving soon.."
"Zhuk?" The doctor's eyes widened in surprise. He didn't ignore the news about the counselor on purpose, but the brigadier being back was indeed surprising. "He's back then? Why wasn't I informed?"
"Murr, I believe you were just informed - by me."
"I think you know what I mean," Nathan answered dryly, amusement beholden in his eyes.
"You weren't told for a reason," Jayden cut in, looking annoyed, "you've got a bloodpressure to mind, and mentioning the captain isn't going to help your recovery any."
"Oh do shut up," the doctor said tersely, before settling his attention back on the chief engineer. "So, what's going on then? He's back, did he say anything? How is he?"
T'Ress shook his head, "The Captain is a very private person, as he always has been. Granted, I haven't had a chance to speak to him as of yet, murr. When I was on the Bridge, prepping the engines, I only spoke with Mister Renyolds, in his stead."
This time, the doctor nodded in agreement, putting a warning hand on the marine's arm, telling him to remain quiet. "Private indeed, and a temper to match." He suddered as he recalled having experienced that temper first hand. "I'm sure I'll see him soon enough," he mused, before looking up again, snatching the cat's long tail as it still pointed his way. "What else? Surely there's more happy news floating around? Or juicier gossip?" Not that he cared much for gossip, but he cared for the engineer's company and friendship.
"May I politely inform you that Caitians have no principle of gossip? We don't care..excuse me, Doctor, I did not mean to be a bother. Rather, murr, hmm..news? Not that I can think of. I would have thought that our Commanding Officer returning would be a most triumphial piece as it twas, murr."
"Oh.." Nathan picked up what remained of the colourful ball of yarn he'd been given in sickbay a few hours prior and toyed with it for a few long silent seconds. "Oh yes, I had hoped he would recover soon," he finally said, allowing a hint of guilt to creep into his voice. Though not as much as before, he knew he'd always feel guilty about what happened, no matter what Tamara would tell him. "News then," he allowed with a slight nod of his own. "How is engineering? Still having as much fun tinkering as you did when you came aboard, fresh from the academy and scared like a kitten?"
He laughed in a rather cat-like way, in his usual fashion. Sighing slowly out of feline pleasure, he nodded, "Of course. We have been attempting some experiments involving rapidly bringing the warp drive up to bare. It should start up our engines faster, and with less need for manual labor."
This time, Jayden was positively furious. "That's enough," he suddenly cut in, holding the doctor back as he himself rose to his feet. He could see that the doctor was getting tired, or rather that was what he wanted to see so he saw it regardless of the truth. However he could clearly see that the engineering babble was beyond him. "You're going to have to go now Mr T'Ress," he insisted.
Nathan wasn't allowed a word in because the marine silenced him with a pointed look. It wouldn't do to get worked up about it; the doctor knew that the young marine had only his best interest at heart but stern words would be exchanged when he was feeling better. Once the engineer was gone. Nathan quietly tapped his combadge. "Mr Tagert, surely you are aware that I'm not going anywhere until later today, and only after I've been certified fit for away-team duty?"
He tapped his combadge again, not waiting for the flight officer's response. "Brigadier Hrisvalar, I am pleased to hear you are feeling better and are back on duty. Would it be too much for me to say welcome back?" Of course, he knew it wouldn't be, but he wanted to anyway. It at least made him feel better.

=/\= Brigadier Hrisvalar, I am pleased to hear you are feeling better and are back on duty. Would it be too much for me to say welcome back? =/\=
Zhukarak could only chuckle at the whole-hearted welcome. He realized the poor doctor had been through a lot, his whole crew had at one point or another. The doctor however seemed to be getting the brunt of it, being the cause of Zhukarak’s wrath or demise…with the help of outside forces of course.
Zhuk tapped on his com badge quickly before the ship’s physician got the feeling that all was not well between the two. “Not at all, doctor. It looks like our roles have reversed slightly, with you needing care and me all healed up. I shall be making some rounds as we are waiting for these engines to cycle up. I will stop by your quarters.”
Zhuk rose from the command chair and decided to look in on his science officer as he walked up to her station. “Have you formulated any thoughts yet on how it was possible for the USS Lion to shoot off her torpedoes without the bridge staff’s authorization?”

So caught up in basic sensor sweeps and diagnostics, Megan didn’t even notice the CO move from his chair until he was almost right next to her station. She was slightly startled, but fortunately didn’t jump, as the Brigadier took the last few steps to cross the distance between them before asking what was most definitely a very important question. “Have you formulated any thoughts yet on how it was possible for the USS Lion to shoot off her torpedoes without the bridge staff’s authorization?”
Countless numbers of similar questions had been running through the science officer’s mind ever since hearing of what had happened, made only louder by the brief discussion with their new SMO. What Megan really wanted and needed was more information because the possibilities seemed endless. “There are several ways it could be possible, Sir, but without further data, it’s hard to do more than speculate. Unfortunately, the more likely scenarios include some form of sabotage or direct control by a third party, not a malfunction. That, plus the likelihood of the torpedoes hitting the planet and further compounded by each one hitting so many highly populated areas, make the probability of an accident almost impossible.”
At that moment, the turbolift opened and deposited the aforementioned Marine onto the bridge. Since the newly returned Andorian hadn’t had the opportunity to meet the new officer and Megan knew the Klingon had already formed a few opinions on the very topic they were discussing, the timing seemed perfect, both for an introduction and including G’Rowk’s own thoughts into the conversation.
“And actually, our newest crewmember has some very similar ideas,” Commander Garrett added motioning to the Marine to join them. “Sir, this is Lieutenant G’Rowk, our new Senior Marine Officer,” the science officer introduced before addressing the Klingon. “Brigadier Hrisvalar and I were just discussing the situation aboard the Lion, how they could have fired without authorization, and the probability of this being accidental or intentional. I know this was something you’d been thinking about as well, Lieutenant. I was just saying this most likely was not an accident.”

For the first time since she had boarded the USS Jefferson, Tamara was nervous. Zhukarak had formalized her role in the mission as his 'right hand man', and lucky for him, Tamara had no feminist tendencies. She rather enjoyed the title.
"The USS Lion," she said to herself as she left the bridge and headed back toward her office. She needed to familiarize herself with all aspects of the mission.
Entering her office, her first stop before her quarters, she found the door stuck in the open position. It was propped open by a metallic bar of some sort, with one end blunt, and the other coming to a wedged tip. The wedge dug into the door as it repeatedly tried to open, then close, in an attempt to mechanically reset itself.
"Hello?" the counselor yelled into her office. "Anyone here?" there was no answer, and Tamara had to consider if she was going to call security or not. She decided against it, even though her gut instinct told her she should call someone to check the place out.
She stomped on the metal bar a few times before it dislodged itself. The doors shut all the way, and then reopened. It stopped short from completely opening, due to the wedged in bar on the one end, but now it was open enough for Tamara to walk through.
"Hello?" She asked again. No answer. The small office left for only a couple of places to hide, and after mustering up enough courage, she forced herself to look behind her large comfortable chair, and under her desk. Neither place had anyone hiding.
Next, she went to her console and pulled up the activation logs. The computer responded that there was an unauthorized access, but the data stream containing any further information was corrupt.
=/\= Tamara to Security. Someone has broken into my office and accessed my files. =/\=
<Tag Security>
But why? Tamara found no reason why anyone would want her files. There was nothing incriminating in there that she has placed there.
She waited in her office, unsure if she should leave before whoever was there might return, or stay and wait for security. Tamara was second guessing her decisions now... but eventually gave into waiting.

Tom strode down the coridor...wandering around the ship, thinking of Jenna...how he hadn't seen her in a week now...she wasn't on the Quarter Masters manifest anymore...he had looked up her Starfleet record. It had informed him of her transfer to the Sutherland a few days prior, and that was enough reason to for his blank stare into the horizon on another plane trillions of parsects away. As he passed by the open door on his way to nowhere, he heard the ships speakers and an audible voice say. =/\= Tamara to Security. Someone has broken into my office and accessed my files. =/\= He noticed that was where he was, so he turned around and ran to the weapons locker down the hall, grabbing a phase compression riffle and sticking a type 1 hand phaser down in his boot, he then headed back to the councilors office and threw his back up against the edge of the door. Turning his head to peek around the corner he couldn't see anyone, so he called out. "Any body in there?" Out of the corner of his eye he thought he saw something run and hide behind a bulk head. He turned his head but shrugged it off as his eyes playing tricks on him. Tom entered the room watching to make sure it was clear. As he scanned the room with his eyes he saw a figure, he leveled his riffle at it as all of his muscles tightened, trying to stay as still as possible so he could take the shot. A split second later, that felt like an eternity Tagert realized who it was. Tom had half way lowered his gun when one of the two identical hover balls on the councilors desk spun off of the table and disappeared into the carpet like a drop of water. What he saw looked like bugs bunny tunneling under the ground in a cartoon, But this was no cartoon and it was heading strait for him it halfway turned back into it's previous form, as Tom raised his riffle and took the shot blasting the hoverball into tiny bits of translucent liquid covering himself and the councilor from head to toe.

The captain was coming by for a visit...Nathan looked around his quarters and held his breath for a few long seconds. The place wasn't exactly tidy as there were toys scattered all over the place. The cat litterbox wasn't cleaned out either, though fortunately no smell was coming forth from it just yet. Both felines were lying in their crib, snugly curled up against eachother, and if one listened carefully one could hear a soft purring as they snored.
Just how much time would he have to clean the place up? Nathan sighed audibly and rose to his feet, or rather started to as a single hand firmly clamped around his shoulder, effectively blocking his movement and keeping him seated on he couch. "Don't," Jayden warned, "or you won't be going on that away mission."
"And who're you to decide that eh?" Nathan suddenly snapped, his patience with the overcaring marine lost. "I thought I told you to leave me alone, what're you still doing here?" He sighed irritably, attempting to dislodge the marine's hand from his shoulder. "I'm getting rather tired of your interference in my private life. You don't decide who gets to visit me, and for how long."
A hurt look crossed Jayden's features as the young marine released his hold on the older man, then sank down on the couch next to him. "Am I that much trouble to you then?" he asked softly, sensing the doctor's annoyance. It wasn't aimed at him per sé, but it was quite present, and there was an angry undertone to the feelings he sensed as well. "I'm just trying to help you Nathan, as you don't seem to be able to help yourself. Think of what happened in the brig, I was there remember? I felt what you felt. And now on the bridge...you need to cut back on your activities or you'll kill yourself. And who'll Freddy have left then?"
"And why should that matter to you?" the doctor snapped back, "there are arrangements for my son if anything should happen to me. Don't concern yourself with that. Now, I have a home to tidy up before the brigadier shows up."
Jayden reached for the doctor's hand, taking it in both his hands, squeezing it tightly. "It matters a great deal to me," he answered, swallowing a few times before continuing. "You mean a great deal to me."
Only now did the full context of the marine's actions hit home and Nathan blinked in surprise. How could he have been so blind? "Oh..." he answered, his voice trailing off. He had noticed a certain possessive behaviour in the marine officer, especially when J'Varr had been in his quarters but he hadn't connected it to anything specific. "I understand now," he continued, though he wasn't sure how he felt right now, whether he could return the feelings.
Now he also understood the kiss that had occurred earlier and when he looked up, he noticed an odd look in the marine's eyes. "There's still that issue of that security training," Nathan started slowly, "I don't want to be thrown in the brig again...but perhaps it's wise to bring that up when the captain visits. Something must be arranged..."
"Not now," Jayden answered, releasing the doctor's hand, though uncomfortable with the very idea. "Let's get you cleared for that away mission first. But in order to do that, you must rest. You can't exert yourself. And I can tell that the very idea of the brigadier visiting has you excited, in more ways than one. Do you like him?"
Again, the doctor blinked in surprise. "Respect him," he corrected almost immediately, "and admire him. But I don't like him, not in that sense no. He knows though, about my ah...preferences. Mr T'Ress does not, nor does he need to. That is my private affair, I don't need the whole ship to know about it."
This time, Jayden sensed a truth in his words and he nodded. "We'll take it as it goes," he promised, assuming the doctor would welcome a relationship. He wouldn't press the matter, but he'd make sure the doctor would cut back on his duties, and take a good rest from time to time. He'd make it his personal duty if he had to. "I'll leave as soon as the brigadier arrives," he promised, "but I'll be back later. And Hannah will clear you, I'm sure."
"I'm sure...," Nathan agreed amiably, smiling slightly. At that moment, the chime rang. "Come!" the doctor called, looking somewhat flustered.
Jayden squeezed his hand one more time, rose from the couch and headed towards the door. Lance Corporal Jayden Mitchell saluted smartly, as the door opened and Brigadier Hrisvalar stood in the doorway. "All yours captain," he said softly, before he made a hasty exit.

“Welcome on board, Lieutenant. I trust you’ve settled in quite well? So you’re leaning towards sabotage as well.” Zhukarak listened as the new marine officer, the Klingon, went over his thoughts substantiating why he thought there was criminal intent on board the USS Lion.
<G’Rowk>
“Well done Lieutenant G’Rowk, Commander Garrett. Unfortunately I agree with the two of you. We may have to lock down the crew of the Lion for an internal investigation. I’ll check with Admiral Drew and see if he agrees. Keep up the good work. Oh, Commander Garrett, find Commander T’Ress. I want to be in flight yesterday.”
<Megan>
“Commander Reynolds, you have the bridge.” Zhukarak turned to enter the turbo lift. “Security Deck.” With its familiar whir, the turbo lift sped away to the desired deck. It was always good to look in on new staff members Zhuk thought as he stepped out of the now open turbo lift.
<Matthew>
It felt good seeing the familiar bulkheads of the Jefferson. She had been home for Zhukarak for far too long for him to be ready to call any other place that. After a passing the brig section, Zhukarak was in hopes of finding the young security lieutenant in his office, sitting behind his desk. No one was there. Zhuk chided with himself for not checking with the ship’s computer to which he relented to now. “Computer, where is Lieutenant Van Horn?”

ooc: i'll move this along a tad....to the beamdown point.
ic:
The next morning, Nathan walked into sickbay, escorted by his faithful marine 'babysitter', and beelined straight for Hannah. "We're entering orbit, and I'm needed on the awayteam," he stated, as he positioned himself on the vacant biobed, expecting Hannah to do her magic straight away.
"Have you taken the rest ordered?" Hannah asked, scepticism audible in her voice. She turned her head to face Jayden, when Nathan only nodded.
"He has," Jayden answered politely, "the captain's been visiting, they talked a bit, and after that I made sure he took his rest. There have been no further incidents."
Hannah smiled softly, though neither man could see it as she had turned away to grab her tricorder. With a solemn look on her face, she examined her own boss, then nodded. "You're good to go. Make sure to take plenty antihistamins Nathan, this planet's heavily vegetated."
Nathan sat up, smiling brightly. "Already packed," he announced as he swung off the biobed in a reasonably fluid motion. "Along with any other medication I thought I'd need for myself."
The doctor tapped his combadge. "Captain, I'm ready to join the awayteam, any minute we're ready to go. I understand we've entered orbit; time's of the essence, we should beam down as soon as possible." Grabbing the gear he'd made sure was ready to be grabbed, he pulled Jayden along. "Get your gear, you're coming too."
Several minutes later, the doctor and the marine were waiting in the transporterroom, ready and eager to get started on the medical relief.

Zhuk had checked in on the good doctor a couple of times over the past two days. At first Zhuk found it curious that the doctor would be accompanied by a marine, but it didn’t take long to figure out the extraordinary friendship that seemed to exist between the two. Zhukarak was glad as it appeared to help the doctor recover at a much faster pace than otherwise. Zhuk assured the doctor that he himself was fine and that there would be no grudges between the two. After all, it wasn’t Doctor van Breughel’s fault.
The two days it finally took to get to their destination, after a long 3 hours of engine start-up, were finally over. Zhukarak entered his ready room after finishing the briefing for the away teams. Commander Garrett, together with Doctor van Breughel, and Lieutenant G’Rowk were assigned to go planet side and assist with the injured and security there, along with a few marines. Zhukarak was going to be accompanied by Counselor Thompson, Commander T’Ress, and Lieutenant Van Horn for the boarding of the USS Lion.

Standing in the transporter room with the first away team, the only word Megan could think of to describe how she felt was uncomfortable. Sure, she had absolutely no problem leading the away team, but it felt unfamiliar being in civilian clothes. In fact, the science officer hadn’t even had anything in her closet besides uniforms, training clothes, and black ops gear, none of which had been appropriate for the mission, so Commander Garrett had actually been forced to replicate something that she hoped passed for normal. Still, this new outfit didn’t feel like it fit right, even though it had been replicated to fit her exactly. It was just so weird… At least her hair was exactly the same, though she’d considered doing something different for a brief moment before dismissing that as entirely unnecessary. They were going for subtle, not full blown, back story, get into character undercover.
Doctor van Breughel, Lieutenant G’Rowk, and a few other medical and Marine personnel had assembled in the transporter room in preparation for the first deployment. They had been monitoring comm traffic and scans of the planet and determined the worst area of the disaster. Once they’d established an emergency base there, other teams were prepared to beam to other locations. This first team would test the waters as far as the response of the population to their presence to determine if they would need more Marines and security with each team. It was hoped that the help would be needed and appreciated enough to hold off any tension, at least for the first critical days the Jefferson and Fang were here.
Nathan was looking far better than the last time she’d seen him, and based on the reports Megan had been given on a daily basis, he was certainly healthy enough to be a part of this mission, though she still felt someone needed to keep an eye on him. Luckily, one of the Marine’s seemed to be doing just fine on that ‘assignment’ so Commander Garrett was less worried about watching him herself. The assembled group was very serious, clearly focused on their respective tasks at hand and cognizant of the tense situation and the environment they were about to enter. It seemed as if everything and everyone was as ready as possible. It was about time to get this mission fully underway and find out what they were in for.
“Cargo Bay 2 to Commander Garrett, all the supplies are ready for transport. We’ll beam them to the surface on your command once you are in position.”
“Acknowledged,” Megan replied before turning to the assembled group. “Alright, is everyone ready for transport?”

"Ready," replied both Jayden and Nathan in unison, as they stepped onto the transporterpad. They were soon joined by the rest of the party and Nathan noted with a little bemusement that some looked rather uncomfortable wearing civillian clothes. Even Jayden looked less than pleased at having to hide his phaser, and not having much room to hide it at that.
The doctor had no such trouble, even though he was the only one without weapon. That is, without phaser for he had many a concoction in his med-kit that, if used wrongly, could be quite deadly. That, and a laserscalpel made a very lethal weapon as well, if gotten into the wrong hands.
Seconds later, the party beamed down into a heavily vegetated area, just outside one of the rural communities. The first the doctor had to do was reach for his antihistamines, before he would be unable to function properly. He sneezed twice, before Jayden finally held out the inhaler to him. Gratefully, Nathan took it from him and inhaled deeply while pressing the release on the device. Feeling better, he turned to look ahead and gasped. "Oh my," he murmured as he pushed through the vegetation.
What had once been a beautiful city, was reduced to rubble. People were disdraught, making a life for themselves as best as was possible. An old woman was shuffling by, carring a heavily laden basket on her back. Motioning, Nathan ushered his companion forward to help her, while he ran forward to assist a young man with what he assumed to be his injured son.
"Don't be alarmed," he said softly, "we're here to help. I'm a doctor, please let me help."
The man jerked the child back from him, chattering angrily in a language Nathan couldn't yet understand. The universal translator needed a little time to pick up the language, before it could function. "Let me help," Nathan repeated, pulling out his tricorder, "I'm a doctor. I can heal him." He indicated the boy, who was looking rather scruffy, covered in dust and blood and looking utterly frightened.
The doctor knelt down before the boy, bringing himself to eyelevel with the child, then turned the tricorder around. "That's you," he explained, showing the child images of the readings he'd just taken. "On the inside." He changed a setting, so that it showed a 3D image on the screen, then turned it on his father. "And that's your father, look how he's bigger and sligthly different?"
He desperately needed to gain their trust, before he could move on to others. If people saw they were here to help, Nathan hoped they would soon accept treatment, and would sooner trust them. And the child was a perfect means; once healed he'd probably run off to tell his friends about the device that showed you on the inside, and they'd want to see for themselves.
While the child gazed at the tricorder, which Nathan had temporarily relinguished to him, Nathan pulled a hypospray from his kit, inserted a mild painkiller into it and pressed it against the child's arm. The boy started at the hiss and jumped, letting the tricorder fall from his hands.
Smiling, Nathan picked it up and scanned him once more. "You should feel better soon," he said, while gently cleaning the child's face with a moist tissue. He rose back to his feet and addressed the male. "He'll be fine," he promised. "Where's your hospital? It's vital I get to your hospital."

The feline's eyes mowed and swayed with the words that were being fed to him, his expressions belaying the shocked emotions that we was exhibiting. Sighing out of delight, he looked to her with a tilted head, "Well, you are certainly far more interesting then I originally had you pegged. I have a sensationalized story behind my reason being here...why do I have a feeling that you will not believe it? Essentially...I was called aboard to watch over a specific piece of.... perhaps it best not to say. But with how honest you were, it may be only fair..." He purred whilst he spoke, pausing a moment to do so, "I was called aboard to defend a set of Crown Jewels...why do I have a feeling you don't believe that?"
…T’Ress awoke. A daydream. A fantastical daydream. This was quickly shaken from his head as he remembered something more important…
--- Zhukarak was going to be accompanied by Counselor Thompson, Commander T’Ress, and Lieutenant Van Horn for the boarding of the USS Lion. ---
T’Ress reported to his Commanding Officer, nodding to the other alien. He sighed softly with a gentle purr, “I am not trying to belittle any human, sir, but I hope you understand me when I say I am glad that I am able to work on a team that is not wholly human. I understand that together we are one, and that the Federation stressed cooperation…” He then paused, flicking his tail, “But even Spock admitted that humans could be irrational creatures.”
Sighing slowly, his tail again flicked as he took his place, ready to be transported. He stood, waiting for Zhuk to exit from his tasks and allow him to finally go planet side. He leaned against the side, lamenting the lack of engineering personnel to accompany him. He had assigned the majority of his crew to speed up the engine process, per his Commanding Officer and First Officer’s orders. This, of course, caused him to grant them an off period to make up for it, and the remainder was cleaning up after the mess so to speak. Therefore, it was imperative that he was capable of handling any technical concern planet side, despite the fact that he only attending the mission due to specific cultural similarities with the inhabitants.

The strange men that had appeared from the jungle astonished him and immediately he feared for the life of his child. He already knew that the people called Federation had killed his entire family and destroyed his home. If it hadn't been for his son, Tathen would have taken his knife and trust it has hard as possible into the man's heart. From what he knew of the outside world, the man trying to speak to him was definitely a doctor. With this in mind, Tathen allowed the man to proceed cautiously.
"Why did you destroy our homeland?" Tathen asked bitterly," we were told that we were going to become allies. The Federation was supposed to protect us from danger! You destroyed what we worked for our entire lives."
(Nathan)
Tathen hadn't intended to scream at the man who had clearly helped his son feel better. All of his hate and anger was ready to spill over and the target of the hate was the Federation. His neighbors had joined the militia to repel the invaders against his advice. He knew that they could kill the rest of them in an instant.
"Please let us take care of our dead, we do not want or need your help!" Tathen said as he took his son in his hands and took him away. Deep inside he knew that he was wrong. They would need this strangers help, if not for themselves but for their children.

Zhukarak and Admiral Drew were now aboard the USS Lion speaking with Captain Worthing. He knew that they were being debriefed and Matt wished nothing more than to be sitting in on that meeting. He would ask Worthing how she could allow this tragedy to happen. It was utter and complete devastation. According to reports from the away teams, the population was refusing their help and in some cases the away team was met with violence. Things on Dorvan V were indeed worse than reported by Starfleet.
"Commander Reynolds, one of our away teams have been ambushed by a rogue militia," the tactical officer reported," we have some minor injuries."
"Reynolds to Sgt. Martinez, do you need any assistance?" Matt asked as his stomach clenched in worry. Martinez's away team had only been down on the planet for twenty minutes. He knew that things could get a lot worse.
"No sir, we have subdued the threat and the medic is taking care of the injured on both sides," Martinez reported.
"Alright keep me informed," Matt said knowing full well that they had been lucky that no one on either side had lost their life.
