The transport ride was not too long, and it gave Thomas time to finish the novel he was reading prior to arrival. Thomas, or simply "Tom", as his friends and family call him, was a calm Captain. He regularly exercised, and even though he was approaching six decades, he was still relatively fit. His hair was the color of pepper, showing no sign of a receding hairline. He had a jovial face at all times, and when he wasn't happy, one felt the warmth that emanated from within.
He yawned, and looked up at the autopilot console. Ten minutes until his arrival to the USS Nevada. He buried his nose in his book. He had replicated a paper copy for the fun of turning the pages. The page saving devices were crude, at best, for the paper books, and he'd much rather finish the book than have to bend the corner.
Two days earlier
"Captain Updeik, you are wanted in the Admiral's office." Giulia, the Andorian secretary announced over the speaker phone. Giulia was beautiful, and young. Tom didn't consider such things anyway, being the type of man he was. His happy-go-lucky attitude encompassed anyone that could reflect it back. One need not be beautiful to do so.
"What, well, why?" he asked, more quizzically than concerned. It was an odd request. His ship has been dry-docked for over two weeks after receiving damage from navigating too close to the event horizon of what turned out to be an inverted black hole. He had already done his bit on questioning, what would command need now?
"Didn't say, but Admiral Greely is waiting for you in his office," she closed the channel.
"Sounds like I better get moving!" he announced to his pet cat. The feline, Finnigan was his name, was the office pet. Thomas loved the cuddly nature of the animal, and encouraged it's return to his office each and every time he was not on a mission.
He took his glasses off and placed them on his desk. They were mostly for looks, his eyesight being fine.
Reaching the Admiral's office, he straightened up his shirt, making sure that it had no wrinkles before entering.
"Sir," he said to Greely, who was going through reports. The two were friends outside of their work, so the formalities were kept to a minimum.
"Ah, yes, Tom, sit down, this won't take long."
"Did I forget to fill out something in the paper work?" an attempt at a joke. He was pretty sure he hadn't.
"No no, nothing like that. I actually have a mission for you."
"I'll let my crew know." He shifted in his chair, trying to get comfortable.
"No need. As I said, this mission is for you"
"Interesting... Undercover?"
"You could only wish," Greely and Updeik, back in their early officer days, reveled in such assignments. Now that both are putting on years, action turned to words, words to politics, and politics to nice offices. The two hadn't lost their edge, but they definitely have mellowed out.
"Actually, I'm going to need you to Captain another ship for an incident that is occurring in the Canis Major Delta System. Our colony is at risk there. I'll give you the details of course, so there's no need to explain it all now."
"Interesting," Tom repeated again. "Who is the Captain I am replacing."
"Captain Nack."
"The Ferengi, right...." Word of a Ferengi Captain in Starfleet travels faster than warp nine.
"Captain Nack is being held for tests on Qualinost, and with the displacement of the medical facilities, his treatment is going to run longer than expected." Admiral Greely winked, "We'd rather have you in there for this one anyway. Conveniently, it works out."
"Convenient," Captain Updeik replied. Greely was up to his old tricks again. The Ferengi doesn't handle diplomacy well, eh?"
Greely just smiled. "No, no, nothing like that, he just needs some more medical attention. Anyway, you leave in two days. We need to evacuate the civilians, treat the injured, and stop this mess." he changed the subject quickly.
"Sounds like a plan, I'll be on the first shuttle out to Qualinost." He grabbed the padd from Greely.
"Take care, Tom." Greely patted Updeik on the back.
"You too." He smiled back. "You too."
=/\=Docking procedure complete =/\= the computer indicated. The thruster system shut itself down, and the hatch opened.
"Welcome sir, I'm Commander Dan Trek, " he stood at attention. Captain Updeik barely got the chance to exit before he was met. "We've been expecting you."
"At ease Commander," he shoved out his hand, "Captain Thomas Updeik."
"We'll have your bags taken to the VIP quarters. We chose those since Captain Nack's room... well, nobody wanted to move his stuff." he reciprocated the handshake.
"Understood."
"It is a shame he was delayed."
"Truly," Tom replied.
"But the ship must go on without him."
"Indeed." Tom liked the First Officer. Straight to the point.
"I'm sure you'll want to get started right away?"
"I do, in fact. I understand you are on a shore leave?" Captain Updeik directed the turbolift to take them to the bridge.
"We are. Shall I call the crew back."
"That would be wise. We have been directed to move out as quickly as possible to the Canis Major Delta System."
"Interesting. We have a crew member that is there now."
Tom looked surprised. "Well, that is interesting. Perhaps they will be of some help."
Too much serious talk was occurring, and when Tom reached his ready room, he instructed the replicator to replicate a Brandy for himself.
"Would you like one, Commander?" the Captain's jolly face showed that this mission would be much different than the average mission with Nack. This Captain was happy, calmer, and wise. An interesting change.
"No?" he shrugged, sitting down in the smaller chair. "Any chance I can get one that fits a normal sized person?"

"Any chance I can get one that fits a normal sized person?"
"Of course, Captain," Dan said, tapping his comm-badge. "Commander Trek to Ops."
"Ensign Wilkins here, sir," the Ops officer replied.
"Ensign, as soon as possible, I need you to get the standard-sized Captain's chairs out of storage and replace the current ones in the Captain's Ready Room and on the Bridge," Dan said.
"Understood, Commander. I'll get right on it."
"Thank you, Ensign," he said, and ended the call. "Captain Nack felt rather dwarfed in standard-sized chairs, sir. I had the present chairs custom-made for his smaller stature. My own chairs are larger than average. You present have the feel of what I get when I sit down most places around the ship," Dan said, then chuckled at a memory. "I remember when I was Acting Captain of the Raven, I had the chair custom fit then, too. None of my senior officers wanted to sit in it because it was too large for them."
Dan could already see a significant difference in the temperments of Captains Nack and Updeik. Updeik was a much calmer man. Nack, however, was rarely calm, and never at ease. It tended to put the crew on edge when they were around him.

Bandages, analgesics, other small items that was needed on the Nevada were stacked on the hover cart being driven by Dr. Grey back to the transporter room. Her attention was gripped by the voice of Cmdr. DanTrek recalling the crew back to the ship. Suddenly she wasn't alone anymore.
A grin spread across her face. She always had been a people-person. Well, she had been before Stephen jilted her. Maybe she was finally getting over that. A calmness filled her at that moment and she was sure she had mended from that blow to her ego.
|USS Nevada Transporter pad
Lucy stepped down from the pad, her stack of supplies beside her. At an uplifted eyebrow of the transporter operator, she smiled at him.
"If you could beam these things directly to sickbay, I'll much appreciate it."
"Yes, ma'am. Consider it done," he replied, smiling in return.
"Thank you, petty officer. If anybody asks, I'll be on the bridge."
"Very well, doctor."
With the supplies taken care of, Lucy walked swiftly to the nearest turbolift.
|Bridge
The door shooshed open in front of her. Expecting to see Captain Nack, Dr. Grey looked first at the large man in the small center chair then back to the XO. Slowly, her frown deepening as she moved forward, Lucy finally stopped next to the counselor's seat.
"Where's Captain Nack?" she asked.

Jon was standing next to Commander Trek when a call from command came in and the ship was informed that captain Nack would be held over at a medical facility on Qualinost. A Captain Updeik would be taking temporary command of the Nevada, weird they wouldn't give command to Commander Trek but command had it's reason's. As Commander trek left the bridge to make arrangements for the new captain to arrive Park went to the tactical station for a closer look at there new captain's service record.
A few hours later Jon was heading to his office on the pretense of working yet it was to sort his own issues with staff. Park longed for something to do other the duck from his Staff. As he rounded to corridor he saw Lt.Commander Thomas stepping out of the turbolift and heading to his office door. as Thomes hand reached for the door chime Park called out " Commander Thomas i am right here." as he stepped to his door and used his codes to open it stepping inside he went to the replicator "A drink commander." Park asked Thomas. "No thank you sir i am on duty." Thomas replied. Jon ordered a Coffee from the replicator Turning and sitting at his desk he said "Well Mr.Thomas what can i do for you?"
Thomas looked at him and handed him a Padd showing the status of all teams. Jon looked confused when he reviewed the Padd seeing that all was in order he knew this wasn't what Thomas wanted it was just the way Thomas was when he wanted to speck in private. "Ok sir here it is. Lt.Commander Salfer has requested again for a command review of her team however i know you have been busy. I have told her she may just have to have Commander trek do the review but i wanted to know why you have avoiding the review sir." Commander Park looked at Thomas long and hard before her was ready to respond. "Your right Commander i have been avoiding the team reveiw..... The reason is Lt.Commander Collins. He was part of test team on the project my Father disappeared from." Thomas looked a little shocked he had read the crew roster and backround on all new crew and must have missed that detail on his service record." When i saw he requested a transfer to the Nevada i felt ok with it but two days ago i received a call from my mother they recovered the flight data recorder from my fathers test flight and now i am all confused i have been working it out on my own,But without a counselor i am just not 100%." Thinking about it a little more Park picked up a Padd and make a memo. Handing the Padd to Thomas Park said "Inform Commander Salfer that i will review the team at 1600 this afternoon." Thomas nodded and left.
The time piece Park kept on his desk read 13:40 he knew he had to head to Cargobay one in a few minutes he figured he would just go down do a quick review and leave how wrong he was.

Nack jumped off the biobed, quickly finding himself out of breath.
"You are joking right? I have a ship to command up there. I have just received a [Priority Message] from my Operations Officer, and its urgent that I return!"
"You will be staying here, per Admiral Greely's orders, sir," the Doctor said. "We have tests to run, and look - you are even out of breath from the short distance you walked between the bed and here. You cannot leave like this."
"The only reason I am out of breath is because you gave me a slight sedative." Nack was huffing for breath, his rage consuming his short little body; his orange skin turning reddish. He was quite angry.
"Orders are orders, sir, and quite frankly, I care for Admiral Greely more than I care for you. We don't have the facilities on Qualinost to run these tests on you, and have to wait to get them in by transport." the Doctor, a Captain in rank as well, had his name duly noted in the blacklist of names inside of Nack's head. A Ferengi never forgets when he gets wronged.
Realizing that he wasn't going to get anywhere, not with this Doctor anyway, Nack asked the Doctor something. "I know you don't like me," he rolled his eyes... he still didn't know why, but there were more important things at hand... "but I need you to get this to Admiral Greely. It's very important."
The Doctor took the padd from Nack. "I can do that, as long as you start cooperating with the medical staff." He turned immediately and walked off.
It would be a few days later that Nack found out that he would not be joining his ship for its next mission due to continued medical tests. As you could imagine, he was not happy.

Jon walked into the Cargo bay and saw several members of the Gamma team standing around waiting for Lt.Commander Salfer to arrive. Jon stood by the door and was watching the security team just hanging out. Heading over to one side of the cargo bay Park tapped a few commands "Computer Locate Lt.Commander Salfer." The computer beeped "Lt.Commander Salfer is Holodeck One." Commander Park turned to Commander Thomas." Wait here i will get her, I am sure she just lost track of time." Lt.Commander Thomas just nodded and went to the team members and informed then of the delay as Park headed out of the cargo bay and entered the nearest lift.
Park was confused why would she ask for the review and then be late. He was about to get his answer as he stepped up to the holodeck doors. Park tapped some commands and the doors didn't open. "Computer open the holodeck doors." he computer replied "Access to holodeck one has been restricted." Park was getting worried why restrict access to the holodeck unless you are doing something you don't want people to walk in on. "Computer security override Park 32 Gamma Alpha." The computer beeped and the holodeck doors opened show in a vast jungle. ~wow nice program~ Park was thinking. "Rebecca are you in here?" park walked several feet into a clearing with no sign. "Rebecca." Park called again. not getting a reply Park called out "Computer end program." The computer beeped "Holodeck controls have been locked." Park kinda knew this would happen. "Computer Security override Park Omega 3." the simulation ended and there in the corner on the holodeck was a body on the floor. Even before park was there he was hitting his combadge =/\= "Park to Sickbay Medical emergency in holodeck one."
As sickbay informed him they were on the way he tapped his combadge again =/\= "Park to Thomas Report to holodeck one Commander Salfer has been injured. Bring her team to assist you in the investigation. Park out." As he finished talking to Thomas the medical team was arriving and start taking care of Salfer. They put her on gurney and moved her out heading to sickbay.
Commander Park was just getting back from a locker getting several tricorders when he saw Lt.Commander Collins already there scanning. Park looked surprised it took him a 5 or 6 minutes to get from Cargo Bay one to Holodeck one and he was only gone a minute two at the most but whatever. A engineer had just brought a terminal in so they could review her holodeck session. As Park started run the search program the rest of the team arrived and started to pick up tricorders and started to scan the holodeck. Park turned the console over to Lt.Commander Collins so he could head to sickbay and check on Lt.Commander Salfer.
As Park entered sickbay he saw a few nurses standing around Salfer scanning her and running test's even thought Park knew basic medical skills he knew something was off by the way the doctors and nurses were talking quickly. Heading over he looked for Doctor Grey but she wasn't around. Park grabbed a Padd that one of the nurses put down and started reading it. Devon an RN saw him pick the Padd up and started to intercept the Commander. "Sir can i help you with something?" Park put the Padd down and said "No i have basic medical knowledge and i can see something isn't right. So please tell me what it is." The nurse looked around trying to find a way out but Park kept up the pressure. "Sorry Commander but I can't tell you. Only Doctor Grey can tell you." Park looked annoyed " Well I think since Doctor Grey's not here and a security officer is hurt you can tell me." Elric Devon was thinking about it for a long time and realized Park was right. "Well Commander." Devon started. " the Commander was hit on her head with a heavy object and then shot with a phaser. She will recover but it will be a few days." Park was glad he did what he did. "Thank you if Doctor Grey has a issue with you telling me tell her i ordered you to." Park headed out back to the holodeck.
Park arrived on back at the holodeck to find an Ensign taking the workstation out and the security team was gone. Park headed back to the cargo bay and found Lt.Commander Collins sitting by the cargo bay computer terminal park headed to him and he held out a Padd. Park scanned it and noticed nothing about what could have hurt Rebecca. ~Strange that would be in the report~ Park thought to himself. "Thank you Commander until Rebecca is cleared for duty you are in command of Gamma team." Park headed out of the cargo bay but tapped his combadge once out of earshot of the Commander =/\= Park to Captain Updeik, Commander Trek and Lt.Commander Thomas. We have an issue we need to talk about. Can we meet in the observation lounge.

Elric tapped his comm badge, calling for Dr. Grey.
She was in the middle of a vague discussion of Capt. Nack being delayed on Qualinost for medical tests. She was just as capable of doing those test on the ship. But Starfleet Medical had their reasons, she figured. For now she needed to return her attention to the crew of the Nevada. Nack would have to fend for himself.
After saying her goodbyes to the captain and commander, she stiffly made her way to the turbolift. Far be it from her to question Starfleet orders but there were times when she wished she could.
|Sickbay
Lucy didn't rush into the examination room because she knew that her people were capable of whatever emergencies arrived. So, she went directly to her office to read the report she knew Elrick Devon had already written.
Phaser burn to the left lower quadrant, concussion to the left of center at the back of the head. So the assailant was left-handed. Otherwise, s/he would have struck to the right. She was also struck from behind. Dermaline gel had been applied liberally to the phaser burn, the resulting bruise had been treated and the woman was being checked for pupil reaction every 15 mintues.
Dr. Grey looked up into the recycled air around her and queried the computer, "Location Lt.Cmdr. Park."
"Commander Park is in the ship's observation lounge."
"Commander? When did he make commander?"
"On stardate 94.0310 Lt.Cmdr. Jon Park was promoted to Commander for having passed the commander's exam."
"Oh, for the star's sake! It was a retorical question, computer."
"Please restate your question."
Lucy didn't answer, knowing the computer would simply stop but she had to stifle the impulse to answer anyway.
After informing RN Devon where she would be, Lucy stepped into the turbolift then tapped her foot on the deck.
"Computer, change course. Engineering deck."
"Changing course."

"Lt. Littlewood, are you available?" Lucy stood in the doorway, looking from the chief engineers console around the room and past the warp core. This place always made her nervous.

Word had reached engineering that the Nevada was due to start a mission very soon. Tristan had assembled his new staff in engineering. He stood in front of them as he said proudly.
“I chose you because you all are the best in your field, It will take us time to get used to this ship it will be a difficult time for us all but you wouldn’t be here if I didn’t believe you could do it take the next hour to run diagnostic programs on all major systems I want this ship ready for anything dismissed.”
Tristan smiled as he watched his new team didperse and head for their stations. Tristan himself headed for the main conolse he had decided to run the diagnostic on the warp core himself he wanted to learn it quirks before he felt comfortable letting the bridge push it to it’s limits.
Tristan had been working for less than ten minutes when a voice came from the turbolift.
"Lt. Littlewood, are you available?" Lucy stood in the doorway, looking from the chief engineers console around the room and past the warp core. This place always made her nervous.
Tristan looked up from the console and saw the ships doctor looking at him.
“Of course doctor come in.” He could sense her trepidation and added. “It’s ok doctor I don’t bite.” He said it with his usual joking manner.
“So Doctor what can I do for you today?”
<Tag Dr Grey>
Shouting above the noise Tristan said to the people in engineering.
“Ok listen up people Doctor Grey would like to give you your physicals I know how much we all love them so no rushing or pushing to get in front of the line.”
Tristan waited for someone to step forward but no one did then he added. “Thats an order.”
Tristan followed Doctor Grey to sickbay where he took the first physical.
“So Doc am I in good shape or should I get my affairs in order?”
<Tag Dr Grey>
Tristan straightened his glasses as he knew the next words to come out of the doctors mouth was an offer to repair his eyes. He had been through this at least twice a year but he still hadn’t changed his mind he figured he was born with bad eyesight he would die with bad eyesight besides he came come to like the look of glasses.

"Sir," Commander Kast announced, "We are detecting a large ship on long range sensors."
"It could be the Naal ship, shut down the warp drive and point our nose directly at them. That'll keep our profile as small as possible, so perhaps their sensors won't see us."
The ship came out of warp, Commander Oidar bringing impulse engines online and repositioning the ship.
"Sir, Commander Park, our Chief of Security wishes to speak with us. He says it is important." Commander Trek whispered.
"Go ahead and get started, I'll be there in a minute."
Commander Trek left the bridge, and Updeik waited for any news on whether they have been spotted.
"There is no sign of the ship seeing us. Plus, we are in a normal trading route. It would be perfectly natural for ships to be passing here, so we might have that going for us." Kast had been a cargo ship officer before he joined Starfleet. His knowledge of trading routes throughout the alpha and beta quadrants proved useful.
"Sir, incoming transmission, coming from the planet's surface. It is encoded, and may take some time to decode."
"Send it to my ready room, Commander Kast, when you decode it."

“It’s ok doctor I don’t bite.”
Lucy grinned at the obvious joke. Of course, he didn't bite. But that warp core-y thing might explode. She didn't say that, however, not wanting to get into her phobias because then she'd end up forgetting why she was here in the first place.
“So Doctor what can I do for you today?” Lt. Littlewood asked.
"I need your new staff in sickbay for their physicals. Before you ask, let me say that the reports I have are at least two weeks old. I need an updated medical report that I can read and understand. And why in the name of the stars have you decided to replace almost your entire staff?"
It was a rhetorical question and Lucy didn't really expect an answer. It was his staff and he was entitled to do whatever he wanted to with it. Lucy was a bit surprised to hear Tristan raise his voice.

“So Doc am I in good shape or should I get my affairs in order?”
"You're fit for duty, lieutenant," Lucy said, laying down the scanner she held. She looked again at the overhead biocluster in order to remember all of the vital statistics.
Tristan straightened his glasses and Dr. Grey took notice of them for the first time. She tilted her head to one side.
"They look good on you, Tristan. But we do have an optician if you'd like to get rid of them."
<TAG: LITTLEWOOD>
"Nope, just offering. The only thing I do with eyes is to make sure the pupil reaction time is within limitations." Lucy held her hand up to let him know she wouldn't pursue the issue further. "Last comment from me, sir. It's your eyes and you do with them as you wish. I'm sure you've already considered all options."
<TAG: LITTLEWOOD>
Smiling, her eyes lighting up with delight, Lucy said, "Let's start with Crewman Scully next. Tristan, you may return to duty."
Littlewood's crew was being led in by orderlies and aides where the nurses were starting the medical scanners, coordinating the bioclusters and making notes while downloading all the information into the medical computer.
"I was on my way to the observation lounge to see Cmdr. Park when I so rudely interrupted myself. Nurse Devon, I'm finally going up there."
~See if I can find out what's happening around here.~

Jon sat in his usual spot the the conference table as Commander Trek listened to him explain he wanted to see them. Lt.Commander Thomas was checking the two Padds Park had brought with him and was starting to see what his Commanding officer was seeing. " and from the exam that was given to Commander Salfer the injuries she received were not done by anything in the holodeck." Park was just finishing up as Thomas looked at him. "Sir i think the fact that the security report doesn't reflect any injury she could have received is a matter to address as well." Park looked at him "You are correct Commander however i think that maybe because the person who hurt her is the one who wrote the report or maybe not." Commander trek was a little shocked at that and asked.
<Tag Trek>
Park listened to the Commander and was a little understanding "Sir you know how i feel about Lt.Commander Collins given the fact he was part of the Star fleet flight team my father was on before he went missing. However i don't think he would risk his career by attacking a fellow officer." Park looked around as the two officer started thinking as the Conference room door chime went off. Commander Trek allowed the officer to enter and it was the Good doctor.
<Tag Dr.Grey>
Park looked at her and was a little understanding. "Doctor Grey i understand why you are mad. however in the interests of officer safety i felt that waiting for you may have endangered more officers."
<Tag Dr.Grey>
As the three officer listened to Dr.Grey's full report regarding Lt.Commander Salfer injury's and Park also let Commander Trek know that because of her injury's he had placed Lt.Commander Collins in charge of Gamma team until Salfer is back on her feet. As the Trek asked park the question that would shock a rookie officer Park was ready. "Commander i feel that Collins maybe involved in her being injured however i don't think he was the one who did the deed so to speck." I an placing Lt.Commander Thomas in charge of the investigation into her attack so i can focus on the mission and if there is an away team."

Three days and counting. That was the length of time since Seth had called Starfleet. He realised it would take the Nevada or whatever ship they sent a while to reach the planet, but it didn't make it any easier for him. The clock really was ticking down. They had received one reply from Starfleet, telling them simply that they had sent the USS Nevada as requested.
Seth got up off the ground. He had been sitting on the porch of his house, looking out across the plain, trying to espy the edges of the giant mesa of rocks known as the Ridge, on the tattered mirages of the horizon, as you sometimes could. He thought of his sister. She had been missing for two weeks now, apparently. Seth was beginning to think, maybe she was never coming back. He had three siblings, Seth. A brother and two sisters all with one child each. Seth was the only one that was.. 'unattached' out of the four of them. He did feel alone, but he didn't let it rule his thoughts, there were more important things than one's self he knew.
He kept staring at the horizon, hoping to see something, anything. The wind slapped at Seth's face savagely, kicking up the dirt of the plain into his eyes, squinting and rubbing them he kept his gaze on the horizon, at the mirages quickly forming and dissipating and coalescing again. He felt like he was in a trance, the air seemed to buzz and visibly move around him, as if he was in a thick soup of humidity. Seth squinted again, enduring the pain and irritation in his watering eyes. Truth be told, he didn't know what exactly he was looking for out there, just a sign that the Ridges were there he supposed, anything at all to tell him that he hadn't slipped in to some sort of daydream.
Something within him stirred, telling him an end was in sight, an occurrence which would break Seth out of this strange trance. Or whatever it was... he thought.
There was a slight noise then. It came from the direction of the ridges, and seconds later Seth was fully aware again. He blinked, and glanced around at his surroundings. The normal sounds that were once more filling his ears sounded like screams to him, as if suddenly his senses were ultra-sharp. Seth swore he had felt something like a shockwave a second ago... He looked back to the horizon, and as if in affirmation of the strange events, he saw something bright speeding across the sky, gaining altitude, heading towards the upper atmosphere and likely away from the planet.
It took only two minutes for the object to escape from visual, in which time Seth and John had tracked its ascent using a pair of binoculars. "About fifty metres long... that's a Naal transport ship." John had said as he had peered through the device's viewfinder. Seth had to agree with him, unfortunately. The remaining and crucial question, what was the ship carrying?
When no raids came that following afternoon, Seth and John headed into town in the evening. No more raids to capture more people and a departed transport ship meant trouble. Parking the repulsor vehicle they headed to the building holding the transceiver array that Seth had used two days ago.
"Remember the encoding.."
"Yes, yes." Seth replied to John as he swung into one of the two battered seats. He swept a load of junk away and off the comm array's antiquated controls, wondering how it had accumulated over just two days. "OK, I'm going to send this over an encrypted bandwidth, once they get it and open it, we can hold dialogue over a secure subspace channel."
John nodded in confirmation. Seth pressed the button and spoke, "Calling Commanding officer, USS Nevada, this is Lieutenant Seth Helacaan. I have urgent news." He closed the channel.
"It's away." John said from the console to Seth's right, "Once they get it and decode it they should respond."
What seemed like hours later but was in truth only twenty minutes, the Helacaan brothers got their response. A light started flashing and beeping, Seth pressed a button to make it stop and an image of a Starfleet Captain appeared on the screen between and above Seth and John, it wasn't Nack. Seth contained his surprise and then exchanged glances with his brother. John looked puzzled and mouthed, 'Ferengi?'
"Greetings," Seth replied with uncharacteristic brightness, "Captain...?"

The doors opened to Cmdrs. DanTrek and Jon Park with a surprised Lt.Cmdr. Thomas turning and looking in Lucy's direction. She went forward enough for the doors to close behind her.
"Nurse Devon mentioned that he'd given you privileged information, Cmdr. Park."
Park looked at her and was a little understanding. "Doctor Grey i understand why you are mad. however in the interests of officer safety i felt that waiting for you may have endangered more officers."
"It's your staff member and I understand that you needed the information. However, you completely neglected to put me in the loop," Lucy said, resting her hands on the back of a chair then glaring at both senior officers. She didn't include Thomas in her scowl simply because he was the junior officer at this point.
"The official report will read that there were electrical burns preceded by a blow to the back of the head. She's going to be fine with minor memory loss. I'll recommend counseling with memory enhancers for her. She's also off duty for two days followed by two days restricted duty. If she is doing well, she'll be placed on limited duty until you, Cmdr. Park, feel she is sufficiently recovered to be placed on full duty status. I'm going to let you tell me."
After giving her report, Lucy sat down. Park also let Commander Trek know that because of her injury's he had placed Lt.Commander Collins in charge of Gamma team until Salfer is back on her feet.
As the Trek asked Park the question that would shock a rookie officer Park was ready.
"Commander i feel that Collins may be involved in her being injured however i don't think he was the one who did the deed so to speck. I an placing Lt.Commander Thomas in charge of the investigation into her attack so i can focus on the mission and if there is an away team."
<Tag Trek>
Lucy listened carefully, speaking when DanTrek finished, "We need a security officer in sickbay. Only as a presence, commander. Maybe an officer posing as a patient. Would you be able to spare someone like that?"

Dr. Grey heard the sound of the engines change. Something else was going on.

"Very well, Commander," Dan responded. "I am not presently aware of what our next assignment is, but your dedication to your duties is appreciated."
Lucy listened carefully, speaking when DanTrek finished, "We need a security officer in sickbay. Only as a presence, commander. Maybe an officer posing as a patient. Would you be able to spare someone like that?"
"Additionally," Dan said, "to make it more authentic, Doctor perhaps you could do some cosmetic alterations to the assigned officer. Is there some injury you can think of that would require an extended sickbay stay that would have some visible sign that you could duplicate?"

"Good, make it so. Begin as soon as someone's assigned from Security," Dan ordered.

Just then, his comm-badge went off. "Updeik to Trek. Could you report to the Bridge please, Commander?"
"On my way, Captain."
Dan returned his attention to the people present. "You have your orders. Excuse me," he said, then returned to the Bridge."
"Yes, Captain?" Dan said, upon returning to the Bridge. He spotted Lt. Helacaan "Lieutenant! Good to see you. How are things?"
"A bit different than I left them, sir," Seth replied. "Where's Captain Nack?"
"Captain Nack has been detained on Qualinost for the time being for medical treatment," Dan explained. "Captain Updeik has been assigned as his replacement in the meantime. What can we do for you?"

"Captain Nack has been detained on Qualinost for the time being for medical treatment," Dan explained. "Captain Updeik has been assigned as his replacement in the meantime. What can we do for you?"
Seth was mildly amused at Trek's phrasing, saying that Nack had been 'detained' on Qualinost. But he pressed on, he had much more important things to think about. "Well," Seth began. He paused, looking around the tired old room. His mind with whirring with things to say. Dan Trek had seemed so relaxed, how could he be? Didn't he know they had a mission to do? Seth was feeling so up-tight, that was the problem. He would have to be careful that he didn't release his frustration in the form of anger. John saw the rut that his brother had reached in terms of conversation, and swung himself into view of the screen, so that Captain Updeik and Commander Trek could see him. He spoke to both of them. "Ten hours ago we witnessed a small vessel leaving the surface our planet. We think it may be heading into Naal space, possibly carrying prisoners, innocents captured from our world. You must chase the ship." John said it as bluntly as was possible. Seth was silent, but he nodded quickly, agreeing whole-heartedly with everything his brother had said.
Updeik and Trek looked troubled, they glanced uncomfortably at each other. After a few more seconds, Updeik told the Helacaan brothers that they had picked up a very large ship on sensors, and had just had it confirmed that it was indeed a Naal ship. John leant and whispered in Seth's ear, "Must be their three mile versions." Seth nodded and sat forward in the chair, leaning over the controls. He rubbed his grubby palms together and then dropped his head into them. Something despaired within him. How much worse is this going to get... John began, "Umm, so.."
"So that means you can't follow that prison ship with the large ship sitting in the way?" Seth had sat up and jumped in, quite forcefully. "That is what you're saying?" The CO and XO indicated that that was indeed the case. Seth huffed. He felt like kicking something.
John leant forward and said to Trek and Updeik quietly, "Will you give us a moment?" The channel was temporarily closed. Seth knew what was coming as John swung in his chair to face him. "Seth, please try to calm down."
"I'm trying..."
"I know this means a lot to you, it does to me too you know?" John was trying not to be too hard on his brother. Seth nodded, trying to reassure John that there weren't going to be anymore outbursts. John nodded back, temporarily satisfied with his brother's emotional stability. "It is a real pain dealing with Starfleet, they never listened before. I don't think they're overly bothered now." John muttered as he hit a few buttons on the control panel.
"Don't worry John, I think I have this lot on my side. I am a Starfleet officer, after all. For now at least..."
"Yes, but you're only one among millions on this planet. Is the Federation going to cry much over one officer?" Seth looked at John and wasn't sure what to say, probably because what John was saying made a great deal of sense to him. "Gah, I hope you're right Seth."
They reopened the channel and after a few more exchanges Seth said, "It's up to you Captain, but you can either continue on here, or head in the direction of the Naal capital ship... The choice is yours, it is your ship after all.."

Dr. Grey leaned back in her chair, a thoughtful frown on her face. Her eyes were seeing sickbay with its myriad capabilities. Going through the medical manual mentally, Lucy came up with an idea. Facial features were important and if an accident had occurred -like what just happened in engineering- facial burns needed to be dealt with. They would need extra time in the hospital unit and several treatments. It would work quite well, she thought.
"Yes, sir. I do have a solution," she finally said.
"Good, make it so. Begin as soon as someone's assigned from Security," Dan ordered.
"I'll get on it right now. Devon, myself and the patient will be the only ones that know he's security, sir."

Lucy looked at Jon, her expression contrite. "I'm sorry, Jon. I don't like security issues and when they arise, I get a little testy. I'll try to keep it under control in future."
<Tag: Jon>
Rubbing her hands together, Lucy shook her head, saying, "I don't know why I'm apologizing. Not like me, is it? And while we're at it, what else is going on here that I haven't been informed about? The sound of the engines changed."
<Tag: Jon>
"Okay, I suppose we'll be having a briefing shortly. Meanwhile, I'll ask my nurses. They usually know what's in the works before we do."

Tristan looked at Dr. Grey for a moment before smiling and saying.
“Thank you doctor if I ever change my mind about the glasses you will be the first to know.”
Tristan left sickbay and headed back to engineering. As he entered he looked around the place was deserted all his staff was in sickbay. Walking over to the main console Tristan continued his work on the warp core diagnostic.
After five minutes his staff began trickling back in one by one after Tristan counted all the heads and determined they were all present he got their attention.
“Ok people we still have work to do the warp core efficiency is at ninety six percent at the moment by the end of the day I want that number to be ninety eight let’s get to work.”
After an hour of working at peak efficiency Tristan was happy engineering was as good as it could get he left for the bridge.
As the turbolift opened Tristan noticed it was not Nack in the captains chair. Tristan thought for a moment before remembering some of his staff talking about a Captain Updeik Tristan had dismissed it as unfounded rumours but apparently they were right.
Walking up to the captain Tristan straightened his uniform and glasses before saying.
“Lieutenant Littlewood sir Chief Engineer, Engineering is in perfect working order sir all repairs that were started during the crews R and R have been completed.”

The ship slipped silently through the void, travelling the light years between the waypoints. It had been following the same preset course for a few weeks now, intermittently receiving updates from the surface of the planet they were monitoring, and patiently awaiting their orders. Orders that they had spent months planning to enact. The preparation had always been difficult, not knowing what kind of target they would be facing threw the number of possible scenarios wide open.
The miles-long vessel continued on, unaware of their target that was closing the wide gap between them. The ship's long range sensors had probed endlessly all of the space around them, searching out their enemy. But there was a limit to how far the sensors could reach before what signals they thought they could detect, faded seamlessly into the background noise and radiation of the cosmos.
The search went on, without success. The ship's master became increasingly discontent with his orders. Having to follow a way-pointed course, without break, was hampering his ability to detect any incoming that he could pounce on. Still, he would follow his superiors' commands, even if it killed him he would follow them. It wasn't loyalty, it was stubbornness. After weeks of no contacts, barring a few cargo ships that weren't worth raiding anyway, the ship detected an abnormally large spike in the background radiation, the biggest they had found so far that was not celestial phenomena. It wasn't long before the spike resolved itself as an engine emission signature, and it wasn't much longer after that that signature was found to be of Starfleet origin. The vessel had it's target.
The master of the ship informed his superiors and fired up his engines, changing course, turning to intercept the Starfleet vessel. No Starfleet ship could have been out this far and in this area, unless, it was for reasons other than exploration... His superiors had taken the knowledge onboard with a mixture of surprise and honest interest. This was because they had been surprised at the Federation's willingless to help this forgotten colony. They believed that the Federation were no longer interested in maintaining their borders in zones of corruption. Perhaps they had underestimated their source of information, the source that had caused them to put a capital ship out patrolling that region in the first place, the source that would hopefully hold up their end of the agreement...
The ship slipped on through the vacuum, closing on the Federation starship until they were within visual range. Then they identified the ship, the Akira class USS Nevada. The ship changed its profile, displaying its dark, ugly face to the grey Starfleet vessel, its prow-mounted disruptor weapons powered up and the 4.8 kilometre monstrosity thrustered forward...

Lucy glanced at the ACO and XO sitting in their chairs as if they were on a field trip while a dark ugly ship showed itself in the viewscreen. Prow-mounted disruptor weapons powered up and the 4.8 kilometre monstrosity thrustered forward.
The doctor was about to panic when she understood that command officers don't panic. No rash moves, never fire until you are fired upon. That ship out there hadn't fired. It just looked like it might.
Dr. Grey slipped down to the counelor's seat and sat down quietly.
<Updeik>
"Just thought I'd stop by and see what's happening," she said. Tension was in her voice and she could only hope that she was the only one that noticed.
<Trek>
"I was wondering where Seth had gotten to and found out he isn't aboard the Nevada. Do you have an idea of why? Where he might have gone?"
<Updeik>
"Just trying to stay in the loop, sir." Lucy's eyes kept darting to the view outside. Finally, she said, "Who or what is that? Should I be worried?"

"Noted, Lieutenant, and glad to hear it," Updeik replied. "Carry on."
Dr. Grey slipped down to the counelor's seat and sat down quietly.
"Nice of you to join us, Doctor," the Captain said, amicably.
"Just thought I'd stop by and see what's happening," she said. Tension was in her voice and she could only hope that she was the only one that noticed.
"At present, we're scanning this massive ship that just appeared on our sensors," Dan responded. "It's huge."
"I was wondering where Seth had gotten to and found out he isn't aboard the Nevada. Do you have an idea of why? Where he might have gone?"
"I can answer that for you, Doctor," Dan responded. "Mr. Helacaan took some personal leave. In the meantime, we've been ordered to his home colony. We're expecting to rendezvous with him once we reach the planet."
"Just trying to stay in the loop, sir." Lucy's eyes kept darting to the view outside. Finally, she said, "Who or what is that? Should I be worried?"
"We're figuring that out now, Doctor," Updeik responded. "Analysis?"
"Energy readings indicate that their weapons systems are armed and their forward disruptors are at full power," the Ops officer reported.
"A ship of that size most likely has significant firepower, Captain," Dan noted. "Recommend yellow alert."
"Agreed, yellow alert," Updeik replied. "Open a channel."
"Channel open."
"This is Captain Thomas Updeik of the Federation Starship Nevada. State your intentions."

Jill woke up in her bed and realised she was already too late for breakfast in the lounge on [word deleted] five. So, she made a quick cup of coffee in the replicator, showered, dressed, gulped the coffee and headed for the bridge. The turbolift doors opened to an already busy scene.

"Agreed, yellow alert," Updeik replied. "Open a channel."

Jill took her station and relieved the crewman already there. She was still a few minutes early, but wanted to get started right away.

The Naal ship began its final turn to intercept the Federation ship. Pitching down, the prow disruptors were charged to full power. The ship's Commander licked his lips with anticipation, the sight of the easy kill that had presented itself gripped him in full attention. There was a beeping from a comm console then. They were being hailed. The Commander gave the signal to hear the hail and a static filled the bridge, followed by the sound of a human voice,
"This is Captain Updeik of the Federation Starship Nevada. State your intentions." The Naal Commander gave a tight-lipped smile. His opposite was certainly to the point. The Federation ship was displayed on the forward viewport. It's small, sleek grey frame hung on the black background.. ready to be swept away.
The Commander called one of the junior operators over to him. "Transmit this, text only," he instructed in their rough sounding tongue, which was an amalgamation of the languages of most of the races in the Naal Conglomerate. "Federation vessel, this is a Naal Capital ship. We are conducting 'research' on the borders of our space. The planet that we know is your destination is recognised by the Naal Conglomerate HQ as being in our territory. We demand you leave. End message."
<tag Updeik / Nevada in general>
The Naal Commander had purposefully not divulged the identity of his ship. It wouldn't do for anybody to be able to identify himin the future. Hiding identity was part of the Naal military code, something he supposed that he had to uphold. He awaited his response, was the Starfleet Captain going to claim the planet to be in his territory as it officially was, or was he going to find another way around.. The Naal Commander collapsed into his seat, and looked leisurely ahead at the grey ship. It was to be his plaything, whatever happened, he wouldn't lose.
The dirt was kicked up in a cloud of fine particles and dust as the repulsor vehicle made its way out of the town. Canis Major Delta's white-yellow sun was setting. It sunk below the horizon's distant hills, illuminating and casting shadows in the rocks, identifying for the casual observer the system of mesas scattered along the barren plains. The air was particularly clear and fine that evening, and the sounds and background noise of the place seemed amplified. The clean, steady pitch of the repulsor vehicle and the steady whirring and breathing of the air conditioning and radiators left a trail of sound as it sped along the hover-engine beaten road, that led towards a part of the Helacaan family's abode.
Seth stood by the side of the road, looking from left to right and straight ahead of him, at the setting star of the Wezea system. The glowing ball of gas, hotter and more luminescent than your average star, had battered the fledgling climate of Ascension, turning it into an arid and barren world, with only patches of vegetation and few oceans. Longer and longer shadows were cast across the reddening plain. The world around Seth became dark. He scratched at his neck, a multitude of flying insects began to descend, making him itch and generally annoying him. He tried to relax and stop worrying about the minor irritations around him, but he didn't have to worry about it for much longer. He looked to his right, seeing the small vehicle approaching and kicking up dust.
The last of the Wezean star sunk beneath the distant horizon and the vehicle came to a halt before him, the engine chugged as it came to a halt. "Jump in, Karmelo." Seth winced slightly at the use of his forename, it was his father, he hadn't expected that. He got in, choosing a rear seat and looking towards his father in the front seat. He was setting the vehicle to automatic, once done he swivelled around on the seat to face Seth.
"You fixed the autopilot." Seth said.
"Yes," Arnon, his father, replied. The vehicle jumped forward a little, and then started moving forward at a steady pace. "How was the meeting Karmelo?" Asked Arnon.
"It was fine, Dad. Everything is now in order." Arnon nodded pensively. The vehicle moved off into the distance, gently illuminating the dusk that now closed in around it, and headed for Seth's home.

Lucy shivered as the Ops officer reported, "Energy readings indicate that their weapons systems are armed and their forward disruptors are at full power."
"A ship of that size most likely has significant firepower, Captain," Dan noted. "Recommend yellow alert."
"Agreed, yellow alert," Updeik replied. "Open a channel."
"Channel open."
"This is Captain Thomas Updeik of the Federation Starship Nevada. State your intentions."
Their intentions are to blow us into spacedust, Lucy thought then quickly squashed herself. Be positive at all times and especially on the bridge. Wouldn't do for a senior officer to become jittery. The ensigns notice every little thing.
Dr. Grey wanted to know what was going to be happening but there, again, she didn't want to upset the ensigns. So, she sat there keeping her mouth shut. She looked at the viewscreen and the ship that hung out there.
If they were to get into a fight and that ship was blown up, would there be noise? No, of course not. It would be a silent destruction. Except within the ship. There, screams as dying men and women attempted to hold onto life.
Lucy closed her eyes. She had to think positive but it was difficult. The tension on the bridge was almost palpable.
The new science officer, Delaney... maybe.... was at her console with her head down, probably reading whatever it was that science officers read. Littlewood was at the engineering console doing his thing. A blip on the counselor's armchair console caught Lucy's attention. A message for the counselor was coming through.
Raising her eyebrows and knowing that she had full access to any communication with the counselor, Lucy reached down and opened the link.
The text read, "Petty officer Birks is on the way for his appointment."
Signaling approval and acceptance, Lucy closed the link. Wonder if the counselor knows?

"Good, make it so. Begin as soon as someone's assigned from Security," Dan ordered.o
"Aye sir." Park said.
As Commander Trek was finishing giving his ordered he was summoned to the bridge. Park looked at Dr.Grey and was thinking about who he could post in Sickbay. "I will think of an officer and have him or her sent to Sickbay. I Will let you know shortly doctor." As they all left the Observation Lounge Park moved to the Tactical station as a ship entered comm range and he saw a channel was opened.
"This is Captain Thomas Updeik of the Federation Starship Nevada. State your intentions."
Park saw there weapon's were charging and Park motioned to Thomas. He saw what Park did and moved to the secondary control's Park knew the ship was on yellow alert and the Shields were up however he felt the captain should know. "Captain they are charging weapons." Park looked down and saw the ship put there strongest shields to the Nevada.
The Response was being sent but it was text only. "Captain we are getting a reply. It is text only. I am getting it slowly. it reads Federation vessel, this is a Naal Capital ship. We are conducting 'research' on the borders of our space. The planet that we know is your destination is recognized by the Naal Conglomerate HQ as being in our territory. We demand you leave. thats it end of message sir."
Park was watching the Captain and Commander think of a course of action he knew the one he would choice but he was not in command. Park scanned the ship for a sign of weakness but found nothing he knew the ship had to have one but the sensor couldn't find one yet.
Park looked at the command console and had Thomas run the Command program for weapon status. Thomas walked to the secondary tactical console and he tapped the commands and he saw the tactical systems were ready. "Sir the weapons are ready if we need to power then up." Thomas said.
Park nodded and reported the news to Commander Trek. "Commander the weapons are ready should we need them."

Tristan was sat at the Engineering console on the bridge with truthfully not much to do he had finished most of his duties in engineering there were only a few minor systems left to fix. He slowly tapped his console as he re-routed power from the less important systems to the more important ones. As Tristan looked around the bridge he noticed Doctor Grey quickly glance at him as she looked around. Tristan turned back to his console and sighed a little as he stared at the screen.
His attention was quickly gained by the reports the ship had moved towards them with weapons raised, they quickly received a text only message which stated the ship was Naal and they wished the Nevada to leave the system. Tristan began to set up more power to shields awaiting the order to go to red alert.
As Tristan worked he noticed a sharp pain in his left temple, it was like a drill being pushed into the side of his head. Tristan raised his hand to his temple and stopped himself from crying out in pain. He frequently suffered headaches but nothing of this magnitude before. Before Tristan knew it he had head down whilst holding his head in pain. With his free hand he grabbed his glasses and threw them off they went skidding somewhere across the floor. Tristan was in too much pain to notice or care where they stopped.
Tristan managed to turn his head enough to see the blurry figure of whom he assumed was the doctor he couldn’t be sure. He said in a voice as loud as he could. ”Doctor help.” His voice sounded booming loud to him but he couldn’t be sure even the beeping of the console sounded extremely loud to him. He could only hope the pain would vanish on it’s own or the doctor heard his plea for help.
