Carl opened his eyes and wondered briefly why he was looking at the ceiling in Sick-bay. Then it came back to him. The attack, the explosion, massive due to both matter and anti-matter colliding uncontrollably .. He remembered the rift and the ship's fall, thats when he was knocked out.
Mentally checking that all seemed well, he began to sit up, this action caught the attention of one of the nurses, who came over and helped him rise to a sitting position. He checked Sick-bay's chronometer and realized he'd been out for less than an hour.
"Take your time Captain, you've had a nasty knock." the nurse said, running a tricorder up and down. Seemingly satisfied with the result, "I'll inform Doctor Traks that you are awake."
Carl lifted his hand to the side of his head and stifled an 'ouch' as he touched the still tender spot.
Traks appeared and ran a regenorator over Torek's temple, easing the pain.
"You suffered a concussion Captain. We treated that, and as long as you feel, able you may return to duty."
"Thank you Doctor." Carl said, looking round the room, where several of the bio-beds were occupied, "Are there many injured ?"
"No ... Lacerations, bruises mainly, but those two suffered fractures as we passed through whatever it was."
Carl jumped down off the bio-bed.
"Commander Blakus is on the Bridge ?"
"Yes Captain." the Doctor replied.
Thank you for your excellent care James. I'll be on the Bridge if needed."
The Doctor nodded then turned to his next patient. Torek left Sick-bay and headed for the nearest turbo-lift. Once there he entered and stated his destination ..
"Bridge." ..........

OOC: This post is backtracking:
IC: As Lewis sat down at the helm, he felt the pressure of joining this ship and command, but also the excitement of this new position. He could feel other crew members taking a first look in his direction, but only in a friendly and welcoming manner.
Lewis looked at the screen and saw the pursuing ships moving towards the Raven. As the Captain entered the bridge a few moments later he asked the XO Andae Blakus: " What do you think Andae?"
he answered: "I suggest we maintain course and speed, ninety minutes out of Lycarr should be enough, to keep the inhabitants from panicking"
As the Captain and Blakus continued, Lewis felt apprehensive about where this situation might lead, but made him feel more alert and ready for any eventuality. The Captain raised shields as one of the ships passed by at speed. The volley of phasers did minimal damage, although the second nearly threw Lewis from his seat. As the enemy ship turned again Captain Torek ordered:
"Mister Warren, stand by to move us away if necessary"
As Lewis prepared, the Raven lashed out with phasers towards the enemy ship. Daniel Biers, the Counsellor and Commandern Blalus were in conversation before the ship rocked again, knocking Daniel Biers into his seat. Blakus: "I advise we try and make contact Captain."
Captain Torek tried to respond before a stronger attack, with Blakus being knocked to the floor. He quickly got up and gave two orders, one to Will Jamison at tactical and "Ensign Warren, bring us around so we can get a better shot with our primary arrays."
As Blakus checked to see how Biers was, Will Jamison fired with moderate phasers at the ship, after which on screen Lewis saw it explode. The XO Blakus asked Jamison to check phaser settings, although they seemed correct. The bad news was two more vessels were shown to be heading this way. As the Captain ordered both vessels to be targeted a rift seemed to opening ahead according to Will Jamison. As Lewis looked while the ship was hit again, he quickly moved the ship to port.
"What the hell!" Captain Torek said.
"Sorry Sir, but that rift is growing exponentially. I needed to get us from the event horizon or we could have been dragged in ourselves." Lewis said.
=^= Bridge ... Whatever impacted with our shields .. They won't withstand more than two or three more of the same =^= McLean warned before closing the Comm quickly.
"Second ship on a Kamikaze run Captain !" Jake Marcus said.
"We need to turn toward the anomaly if we want to avoid a collision." Carl said.
"Helm .. Do it !" Andae said, watching the screen closely.
After the ship seemed to impact straight onto the Raven's shields, Blakus asked for a "damage report" while the ship was being pulled into the rift. As Blakus seemed to loose conciousness for half a minute before the Captain ended up unconcious on the floor near to Lewis and the Ops console. As Blakus tapped his commbadge for sickbay, a patch of light seemed to move towards the ship. According to Jamison the ship's system wasnt reading this light as it made its way closer.

"Sir. If you're looking for another option besides our right destroying them, I believe we can penetrate their shields with our tractor beam and possibly transport their senior officers to our brig. It may help us get some answers as to why they attacked us in the first place."
Blakus, now sitting in the Captain's chair, scratched his chin in thought. Despite his incapacitated state, the XO still had to take into account Captain Torek's wishes. Would the Raven's true commander take the course of action that Jamison was suggesting? Blakus had to make a calculated decision. They were something that he was going to have to do more and more of, now that his decisions affected the ship more directly than they would have if he were still a Chief Engineer. It was not as if Blakus constantly worked by instinct, but he had made split-second decisions in the past where it was possibly more prudent to slow down.. and figure it out.
The more Blakus thought about it, the more he did not want to destroy the enemy. Not only because it could give them answers as the CTSO had said, but because it was only fair; Blakus realised that before he had perhaps been over-zealous in wanting the ships destroyed. Yes, the tractor beam option was the correct option.
"Do it Commander Jamison." Blakus ordered, intently watching the forward viewscreen for any changes as Ensign Warren moved the ship forward.
<Tag Jamison/Warren>
Blakus shifted in the Captain's seat to look up at Commander McLean, who was still on the bridge. "Commander, you should return to Engineering, we may need-"
The XO was cut-off because at that point the turbolift door opened. For some reason, the whole bridge looked around. Blakus didn't know what it was, but something about the way the doors had opened.. the whole event, told him whom it was who had arrived on the bridge.
Sure enough, Captain Torek stepped out onto the bridge. "Captain," Blakus said, rising from the centre chair in surprise. "Captain, we are transporting the pilots of one of the ship's to the brig." The XO said as his Captain came down to the command arena, he would and did not hesitate to tell Torek of the plan. "We hope that they can explain their actions."

As the turbo-lift rose, Carl took a steadying deep breath ... Not that he needed it, but no Commanding Officer likes being carried off his own Bridge.
As the doors opened, he stepped confidently out of the lift, seeing his Engineer, and catching the tail-end of his Exec's conversation.
"...... return to Engineering, we may need ......"
"Scott ... Everything OK downstairs ?" he asked.
"Yes Sir. Minor issue I needed to be up here for." Scott replied, looking directly at his friend, this man may well be Vanessa's life-line should anything happen to him, so he needed to be sure Carl was really OK, "Hows the head ?" he asked casually.
"It's got a headache." Carl whispered with a sly grin as he passed his friend.
"Captain." Blakus said, rising from the center chair in surprise, "Captain, we are transporting the pilots of one of the ship's to the brig. We hope that they can explain their actions."
Carl seated himself then looked at the view-screen.
"Good idea." he said, "Mister Jamison, get some Security to transporter room two."
"Aye Sir."
"Any particular reason you are going for the pilot .... Rather than the Commander or Exec' ?" Torek asked.
<tag: Andae>
"That's fair enough." Carl answered, "I think you should be the one asking the questions. Get down to the transporter room once you have who you want."
Blakus rightly took this as his cue to begin the abduction. Carl sat quietly watching the scene unfold as his Executive Officer worked out the variables of just 'who' to take, and when ..........

"Do it Commander Jamison."
As Jamison's hands worked his console, he noticed the doors to the turbo lift part. The CO had returned.
"...... return to Engineering, we may need ........"

"Actually, sir, i've already placed them in separate cells and their fighters are being held just off our port side. I've also ran scans and can't find anything harmful on the fighters since they are no longer manned. Would you like me to place them in a bay?" he asked.

(OOC: "Any particular reason you are going for the pilot .... Rather than the Commander or Exec' ?" For some reason, I ws under the impression they were one man fighters. Dont ask WHERE I got that from. lol. Let me know and I can make changes.)

Clarification:
The Raven was attacked by five ship's, not one-man attack vessels. Raven, along with two of the attacking ships passed through the rift and are now fighting a running battle. We are some distance from home and will, at some point find the Dua Ceti Star System, which was on the very outer edge of of explored region (before) we entered the rift. So we are now on the far side of Dua Ceti and need to find a way home.
(hope this helps)
Carl.

"Actually Sir, I've already placed them in separate cells and their fighters are being held just off our port side. I've also ran scans and can't find anything harmful on the fighters since they are no longer manned. Would you like me to place them in a bay?" Jamison asked.
"I'll assume that's a joke mister Jamison." Carl said, beating the Exec' to it, "Those ship's aren't reliant on their pilots, unless of course you are more aware of the situation with the rebels than we are ......"
Jamison blushed as the gaze of several Officers, including the Captain and his XO, fell on him ..
"No Captain." he replied, "I hadn't taken the crews into consideration, I apologize."
"No need Will." Carl said quickly, both to defuse the issue and to reassure the Security Officer that he was right to think of the ship and her crews' safety first, Torek wouldn't want it any other way truth be known, "Keep an eye on our guests, have one of your team lock sensors onto both the enemy vessels, and make sure we're not about to get any surprises."
Jamison nodded.
< tag: Will >
Carl watched the view-screen .. He wasn't studying the scene outside, as it was currently overlayed with a tactical schematic of the surrounding space and systems, he was just idly watching the renegade ships as they circled from port to starboard. He wondered, not for the first time, exactly 'where' they all were. So far, not a single star system had been recognized by the ships computer, but that wasn't too much a worry, as it had only scanned some seventy percent of the space around them ... That, of course, still left almost thirty percent to look at.
Carl wasn't the betting type, but he'd put whatever served as money these days, on finding a way home .. He didn't receive Command to loose the ship, crew, and himself on a simple 'Supply' run !
Something suddenly occurred to him and he frowned ..
"Science ..... Set up a long range three hundred sixty degree sweep for anything out of norm ... I don't care how insignificant or inconsequential the anomaly, log it, and let the Exec' or myself know." Carl said, getting up, "I'll be in my ready room for the next hour .. Then my quarters."
"Aye Sir ... I'll need to take a minimum of fifteen percent from tactical scans, but no problem." the duty Science Officer said as Carl entered his office.
~~~~~
Sitting down, Torek placed his head in his hands for a few moments .. Both to rest his eye's, and truth be known, utter a silent prayer. He needed to get his crew, and the ship, home safely, not to Vanessa and the other children aboard the Raven.
Without realizing it, he rested his head on his folded arms for a second, within three more, he fully relaxed, but his subconcious wondered, 'who would they meet out here' as he slipped into a welcome sleep ..........
Blakus wondered if he should have felt sorry for Will Jamison, but now was not the time.
"... I think you should be the one asking the questions. Get down to the brig once you have who you want." Torek said to him.
"Sir," Blakus acknowledged and rose from his chair. Jamison let it be known that he had transported the commanders of the two enemy vessels into the brig, and Blakus left the bridge for the first time in what felt like an age.
The XO entered the brig and saw immediately the four enemy in the first cell on the left, two Commanders and their Executive officers, Blakus hoped. Of course, it was impossible to tell for sure who exactly were the senior officers when beaming them from another ship. The XO tried to put trust in Jamison's discriminatory ability. With a nod of acknowledgement to the duty security guard manning the controls for the brig's forcefields, Blakus moved to stand by the appropriate cell. "Drop the forcefield, come over here," he said to the guard, a little impatiently. The guard raised his eyebrow but carried out his orders. He drew his phaser and stood next to Blakus, aiming his weapon at the four men who sat idle in the cell.
Blakus started to speak, but stopped immediately. He looked to the side at the intrusive guard, "Stand back a little," he said flatly, "Why are they all in one cell?" The guard shrugged. Blakus tutted and looked at the prisoners again. They were bipedal, he noticed. That was no surprise of course, humanoids made up most of the species that the Federation had contact with. What was surprising was how quiet they seemed, Blakus didn't think he had seen one of them move so far.
"I am Commander Blakus, First officer of this vessel," he said evenly, "For what reason have you attacked us?" he asked, immediately cutting to the chase. There was no response from any of the four men, sitting idle and still by the bench of the cell, two were propped up against the wall, two were on the floor with their backs to the bench behind them. With a glance to the security guard who seemed just as mystified, Blakus continued. "This is a Starfleet vessel, we are of the Federation. I am sure you are aware of this, and thus you are aware that you would not be harmed, subjected to torture or treated at all unethically." The guard raised an eyebrow at the XO's tactics. Surely this was counter-productive? he thought.
"We pride ourselves on openess with all of our fellows," Blakus said, "While it would not be expected of you to do the same, it would be appreciated." Still nothing from the captured Command officers.
"Is this how you thank us, for us not treating you in an inhumane fashion?" Blakus asked them. A hint of mockery was in his voice, who were these inactive folk? "What is this.." he muttered and looked again at the security guard. As he did so he saw something out of the corner of his eye. Something.. developing from the lips of one of the prisoners. Not words but, foam?
With the guard keeping his weapon firmly fixed on them, Blakus cautiously approached the prisoners. He knelt down by the man whose mouth was beginning to foam more and more. It was not much longer before Blakus realised the man was dying, and it was not much longer after that, that he was dead. "What the hell?!" he turned to the guard. "How did you, I mean how did we not realise?!" he shouted. Before the guard could reply one of the others spoke, he was the only one left, and was barely alive.
"We're sorry. We had no choice, we could not let you... reach the place you call.. Lycarr." The man was clearly struggling.
The XO knew it, that was the reason Biers had detected desperation among the attacking ships. Blakus went over to this last prisoner, he was on the bench and just beginning to slip down. "Did you open the rift?" he asked him, knowing he did not have long to get his questions in.
The dying prisoner nodded, "Yes," he croaked.
"How do we get ourselves back?"
The prisoner shook his head as vigorously as he was able. It was clear that he did not want the Raven to get to Lycarr. The guard pointed his phaser at the prisoner. The dying man's eyes widened slightly at the sight of the weapon's tip being aimed at his head. Blakus pushed the phaser away gently, shaking his head at the guard. "No.."
".. I'm not sure how to get back," the poor man said finally, "We do not understand the science of this phenomenon, we have a device to open it, we used it. Never have we ourselves been pulled into one, we are always far enough distant so that..." the words died in his throat, and then he stopped moving altogether. The man was frozen in place, his consciousness died away, frozen in time. Blakus blinked. He closed the dead prisoner's eyes, and after a moment slowly stood. Every death like this hurt him deeply, in spite of the suffering that the man had inflicted on the crew of the Raven, Blakus would not have seen him die, not like this.
"Have these men taken to the morgue." Blakus gave the guard his orders, he left the brig. An autopsy would need to be run to find out why these men had died, but Blakus already had a suspicion: surely suicide?
=/\=Captain, this is Commander Blakus. The ships' officers are dead, but I think I have an idea to escape this space. I'm en route to the bridge.=/\=
He tapped his commbadge again, =/\=Commander Traks, this is Blakus. The people we captured from the enemy ships are dead. I think they committed suicide somehow, could you run an autopsy, just to be sure.=/\=
(OOC: Prior to Commander Blakus' post)
Will had felt like a complete [word deleted]. He had been in Star fleet long enough to know better. But now was not the time to stew over it. He had a mission to complete.
"Keep an eye on our guests, have one of your team lock sensors onto both the enemy vessels, and make sure we're not about to get any surprises."
"Aye, sir." he responded. "We have also done a scan and found what we believe would be the CO and XO if their bridge layout is anything similar to ours. We have them in a cell also."
With a nod from the CO, Commander Blakus left the bridge to interrogate the prisoners.
"Science ..... Set up a long range three hundred sixty degree sweep for anything out of norm ... I don't care how insignificant or inconsequential the anomaly, log it, and let the Exec' or myself know. I'll be in my ready room for the next hour .. Then my quarters."
"Aye Sir ... I'll need to take a minimum of fifteen percent from tactical scans, but no problem."
With the departure of both the Captain and the XO, Will stepped down to the Command seat while Ensign Malik moved to Tactical.
"Keep those scans going, Ensign. Let me know as soon as anything strange seems to happen."
Will than turned to the Science station. "Have you taken what you needed from Tactical?" he asked.
"Aye, sir. All scans are now active and so far there no unusual readings."
"Very well. Stay on it." he said turning back to the view screen. He was watching the two enemy vessels that were now in the Ravens tractor beams but he was thinking about his dumb comment from earlier. He made a mental note to remember to punish himself for it later. He would hit the gym as soon as possible and work himself like he hadn't done in quite some time.
As Lewis Warren watched Commander Blakus in the Captain's chair he felt admiration and respect in his abilites while the Captain wasn't present. He only hoped he would one day with experience and training he would reach that level, allthough the current situation brought him back into the moment quickly.
Lewis moved the ship forward before the Captain returned to the Bridge.
Captain." Blakus said, rising from the center chair in surprise, "Captain, we are transporting the pilots of one of the ship's to the brig. We hope that they can explain their actions."
As some of the enemy were transported to the brig and Commander Blakus left the Bridge, Lewis wondered if they would ever get home after passing through the rift. As scans showing anything unusal were contuinually being made and two of the ships were in tractor beams on the view screen Lewis sat watching wondering how quickly the action had taken place. He only joined the crew a short time ago, it felt like a movie, a 20th/21st century form of entertainment which he enjoyed in his spare time, although it made him wonder if his life was now as exciting.
OOC: yes i am back posting big time, but i have been out of it a while lol IC: "Are you alright Counsellor?" no sooner had those words left the XOβs mouth that Daniel felt a sharp and strong pain course though his body, Daniel tried to holding himself together but no sooner had he felt the pain he found himself on the floor with the world around him going black.
{Post from NPC Lieutenant Evan Loirre, CNS}
Evan was happy enough with how things were going on the ship before everything started exploding, Evan fearing that he would once again be separated from Daniel moved quickly to where he knew his love would be, the bridge. As Evan arrived on the bridge he watched as the drama on the view screen unfolded. Most of the senior staff were very distracted by the light show, the sudden change in location and the fact that the captain was injured to notice that Daniel had fallen to the floor with little to no signs of life. Evan did not even try to speak over the din of the bridge, quickly rushing to Danielβs side Evan began checking for a pulse at first Evan could not find one but after some failed attempts he found one, but faint. βGet another medical team up here, we have two officers downβ Evan shouted down to his comm. badge not even trying to inform everyone who was concerned with either the captain or their stations.
After what felt like a life time Evan watched as medical staff took Daniel down to sickbay after the captain had been safely moved, Evan was on the verge of tearing his hair out, the one thing he had been afraid of was now happening, Daniel was in trouble possibly near death and he could do nothing to help. But as the doctor that was looking at him moved away Evan almost collapsed on seeing that Daniel was awake and sitting up.
{Daniel}
βDanielβ sat up looking around at βhisβ surroundings unsure where βheβ was, or what this place was meant to be. βHeβ noticed a strange pinkish two legged thing come close to βhimβ and say something that βheβ could understand βHow are you feeling Commander? You collapsed on the bridge?β βDanielβ at first did not realise what this pink thing meant until βheβ began to access βhisβ bodyβs long term memory βI ... I am okβ βDanielβ struggled to speak the words βheβ wanted, βheβ was very unsure what βheβ was saying but it seemed to please the pink thing as it moved away. βDanielβ continued to stare around beginning to learn from βhisβ bodyβs memory of information. βDanielβ moved to stand and βheβ noted the pink thing had returned and spoke again βCommander, at the moment we really do not have the resources to keep you hear, so i am going to release you for now but i want you to come back to Sickbay at the first sign of trouble.β βDanielβ raised and lowered βhisβ head and the pink thing moved away again βthis is simple enoughβ. βDanielβ began to make his way to the door when another pink thing approached βDan i think you should take it easy, you have not exactly been in the best health latelyβ at first βDanielβ did not understand this until βheβ learned that this pink thing was called Evan and it was important to this body in some way. βyes, i will ... take it easyβ βDanielβ tried to copy as best βheβ could the answer that he needed, which seemed to work when Evan simply helped βDanielβ to βhisβ quarters.
As Evan left βDanielβ moved to the mirror nearby, Looking at βhisβ reflection βheβ understood that the pink things were of the same being as each other. Pleased that βhisβ new game was underway βDanielβ moved to the object that looked like a rectangle that βhisβ body seemed to want to lay on, moving to it and slowly, carefully laid down βheβ found it pleasant and relaxing, before βheβ knew βheβ was asleep.
Daniel woke up in sickbay, unsure of what was going on, he was sitting up but he could not feel his legs or arms or anything. He tried to speak but nothing was coming out of his mouth, he could hear everything but could not speak βoh no, please no, i cannot be paralysedβ Daniel watched as one of the doctors moved over to him and spoke βHow are you feeling Commander? You collapsed on the bridge?β Daniel remembered that they were starting to fall into the rift and that his entire body had gone into a pain that he had never felt before, what happened next scared Daniel even more than being paralysed he heard his voice speaking but he was not the one talking βI ... I am okβ it was at this moment that he realised that he could hear another set of thoughts there with him, and he felt a strong will force its way into his memories. Daniel watched helplessly as his body got up and made its way to the door with Evan in tow. Daniel was screaming out for someone to help him but nothing came out. Daniel was simply an observer, an observer in his own body.
At first, Andae was concerned when Captain Torek did not answer his communication. That was before reason kicked in. "Computer, locate Captain Torek?" Blakus said into a wall panel in one of the corridors of the ship.
~ Captain Carl Torek is in his quarters ~
It was as Blakus suspected. But why, what was he doing there? He supposed every officer was due their rest time, including the Captain, but at a time like this?
Blakus headed for the Captain's quarters and arriving rang the chime. No answer. Blakus rang it again and when there was no response, he leaned close to the door. "Captain!" he called, raising his voice in order for his voice to be heard through the well insulated door of the quarters. A junior crewmember went by while Blakus was doing this, he gave him a funny look.
The door slid open then, Blakus straightened a little and looked Torek over at the same time. The Raven's CO had obviously been asleep, he was perspiring a little, leaning on the frame of the door with a wearied expression.
"Had a good sleep, sir?" Blakus asked, slightly mystified by the whole event. The XO went on to inform Torek of what had happened in the brig.
Blakus continued on to the bridge at Torek's request. The Captain had informed him that he would be there shortly. Arriving, the XO immediately swept around to the command arena, his eyes scanning the bridge furiously for any and all activity that he had not been aware of before he'd left for the brig. Seeing nothing that he did not know the purpose of, Blakus sat down in the XO's seat and sighed. He was near-exhausted, it was tiring work this first officer stuff. While engineering had not exactly been a breeze, as XO he was moving all over the ship, viewing different departments and assessing them.. and then there was the mental side of things. At least with engineering, all work he did required him to think scientifically and as an engineer; and the only places he had to move to were related to the power systems in some way. First officer required more of an eclection of skills.
Commander Jamison had given the bridge back to Blakus, and now the XO turned to him. "Commander Jamison, the prisoners you beamed aboard are now dead." He informed him, "The likely cause is suicide, but that isn't important right now. One of them told me that they used a device on one of their ships to open the rift we passed through. If we can locate it, we may be able to use it to take us back into.. real space.
"Run a full scan of those ships out there. Look for anything exotic. We just need to hope that one of those two ships have the device they used..."
<Tag Jamison>
As Jamison started his scans of the captain-less ships, the bridge received a comm from sickbay. It was one of the junior medical staff, updating him on the progression of the autopsy. Blakus replied, =/\=Thank you Ensign.=/\= He moved to close the channel but at the last second something occurred to him. Counsellor Biers. The last time Blakus had seen him he was being shifted from the bridge to sickbay on a medical gurney, having passed out from the result of some mental affliction. =/\=Ensign, have you any word on the condition of Commander Biers?=/\=
There was a pause, then: =/\=Counsellor Biers was discharged half an hour ago. He is back on full duty, I am led to believe, sir.=/\=
Blakus's eyes widened, he thanked the Ensign again and closed the channel. So, Biers was in not as bad shape as Blakus had first expected. =/\=Commander Blakus to Counsellor Biers, are you well enough to come to the bridge?=/\=
Carl had left his ready room over an hour before. He had literally just managed to reach his quarters and had slumped into a chair exhausted. He knew it was an after-effect of the concussion, but hoped it would pass by the time he woke ... That wasn't long in coming. His sub-conscious seemed to register a new sound, but he couldn't quite identify it. There it was again, but this time accompanied with a voice .. "Captain ......" Stirring from his fitful sleep, Carl opened the door. "Come in ...... Andae." he said. "Had a good sleep Sir ?" the Exec' said, then receiving a wave from Torek, updated him on what had occurred in the Brig. Carl listened as he freshened up in the small bathroom off the main area. He picked out a fresh tunic and re-entered the living area. Blakus was relieved to see the Captain looking something like his old self. Torek asked him to return to the Bridge and he would follow shortly. As Blakus left, Carl tapped his Comm badge .. =^= Torek to Traks =^= =^= Traks =^= the Doctor replied. =^= Doctor .. I need your .... Help =^= Traks moved to his office and closed the door, he had a feeling the Captains 'help' involved something he'd prefer kept private .. It was .. Carl informed the Doctor he needed something to prevent the tiredness and allow him to function as CO. < tag: Doctor >The Doctor agreed to meet Torek and do whatever was necessary, but to a limit .. Closing the Comm, Carl made his way to the Bridge. Sitting in his seat, he was again updated by Blakus concerning the device used by the enemy. he also mentioned that Commander Biers had seemingly passed out earlier, but Medical had passed him fit for duty, he was now on his way to the Bridge so Andae could speak to him. "SIR ... One of the two ships has powered-up ... She's moving away." Commander Jamison shouted. "Target her drive systems !" Carl ordered, but it was too late, the ship jumped to warp and vanished. The Captain and Executive Officers looked at each other, both thinking the same thing .... 'Had one run to save the other .. Or had it run to protect the device' .... "I hadn't finished the scans." Jamison said apologetically, "I can't say which of the two has the device. "We'll loose that runner if we take time to do a full scan on the remaining ship." Marcus pointed out. "So ...." Torek said, watching the view-screen, "Which is it to be ?" .......... < tag: Exec' >
"We'll lose that runner if we take time to do a full scan on the remaining ship." Marcus pointed out.
"So ...." Torek said, watching the viewscreen, "Which is it to be ?"
Blakus looked at the Captain and back at the viewscreen to where Torek was looking. The XO thought desperately, stubbornly even, he would not accept going after one or the other, there had to be a solution that allowed the Raven to fully scan both. Then it clicked. Yes, there was. Rising from his seat, Blakus distributed orders. "Helm, warp speed, let's catch up with that fleeing ship. Tactical, lock the tractor beam on the vessel that's remained behind, and continue to scan it."
There was always a third choice, one giving the best of both worlds. So, the ship was moving now. The illusion of no movement gone as there was now one object moving relative to the other. The question was, where would they be when they dropped out of warp?
Ensign Warren announced that the Raven, with a ship helplessly in tow, had closed to within several kilometres of the ship ahead. "Mister Jamison," Blakus got the attention of the busy CTSO, "Prepare to disable their engines, and be careful not to destroy them this time."
Blakus twisted to the left to look at Torek. "Captain, I recommend we hold here so we can complete the scans on the ship we have tractored, and then deal with the disabled vessel as we see fit."
"Do we have any indication of which ship if either of them have this damned device?" Blakus asked the entire bridge. This game of cat and mouse between the Raven and her assailants was starting to test his patience. Patience which could be remarkably strong at times, and weaker than thin ice for the rest of it.
*Traks turned to the medical computer and typed in a combination of stimulants and supplements to be loaded into a hypo. Traks then headed for the bridge where he found the Co.*
"Sir if I may have a moment of your time in your office?" Traks followed the Co into his Ready room and after the door closed he applied the hypo-spray to the Co's neck." Sir I will leave the hypo with you there are two more doses not to be used sooner than 6 hours apart. After that you will need to some sleep, if you take all three doses without sleeping at least 3 hours in between you will end up in sick bay for several days. This is not a threat it is a medical fact. If there is nothing else at this time?" Traks turned and returned to Sick Bay to await possible casualties.
The Raven quickly and swiftly over took the fleeing vessel. Remembering what had happened last time, Will set the Ravens phasers to almost nothing but it was plenty to enough to disable the vessels engines.
"We have them stopped, sir." he replied to the XO while biting his tongue in order not to add "And look. No boom."
With the disabled vessel no longer a thread of escaping, the crew finished running the scans on the other vessel. When it was complete, they moved on to the next. The whole operation took about 45 minutes only because Jamison wanted the scans to be completely thorough.
Finally, he looked up from his station with the results.
"Sir. Both ships have been completely scanned and nothing like you described jumped out. However." he continued when he saw the look off disappointment on the XO's face. "The ship that tried to flee has had a modification done to one of it's bulkheads and something within that bulk head is interfering with our scan of that section. We've looked at both vessels and determined that they are of the same class category but the one we're holding does not have this modification. It's almost seems like it could be a false bulkhead. Request permission to take an away team over with an engineer and investigate."
"Helm, warp speed, let's catch up with that fleeing ship. Tactical, lock the tractor beam on the vessel that's remained behind, and continue to scan it." Carl grinned, it was what he was hoping for from his Exec' .. He didn't need any more confirmation that the man knew what he was doing. As the Raven took the second ship in her grasp and began to accelerate toward the second, the Doctor appeared on the Bridge. "Sir ... If I may have a moment of your time in your office ?" Traks said, waiting as Torek got up. "The Bridge is yours Commander, I'll shouldn't be a moment." Carl said, glancing at the Doctor. Blakus nodded as he watched the two men enter Torek's ready room, only to appear moments later one after the other. " ...... at both vessels and determined that they are of the same class category but the one we're holding does not have this modification. It almost seems like it could be a false bulkhead." the Tactical Officer was saying as Carl took his seat, "Request permission to take an away team over with an engineer and investigate." "We need to see what that ship is hiding Captain." Blakus said. "Have we tried to contact them again ?" Torek asked, and getting his reply made a decision, "Lead the away team Andae ... Have the transporter room beam the occupants to their sister ship, that should give you free reign to move about." Blakus nodded, then pointed to Jamison. "With me Mister Jamison." Both Officers left the Bridge, Carl watched the motionless vessel on screen and hoped that his men could find something to get them home. The only beacon they had recognized so far was the possibility that the ships computer had recognized a remote star system, Dua Ceti. The ship was less than twenty percent sure it was Dua Ceti, as it was the furthest system yet to be explored by the Federation, but traveling there, even at maximum warp, was going to take years. The rift could make that trip minutes .......... < tag: Away team >
Jamison quickly signaled for a security detail to meet them in the transporter room and than joined the XO in the turbolift. Knowing that the Commander was a former engineer, he simply asked, "Do we need to contact Commander Scott sir? Or are you gonna handle it yourself?"
Blakus waited semi-patiently for Jamison to get into the turbolift. He supposed a security deal was necessary. The enemy ship was being emptied of crew, but Blakus did not need to be told that you could never be too careful.
The CTSO got in, the doors slid shut and Blakus requested from the lift transporter room 2. Jamison spoke as soon as the lift got going, "Do we need to contact Commander Scott sir? Or are you gonna handle it yourself?"
Blakus took a breath, he was about to speak but stopped himself. He would liked to have thought that he could handle things himself. The pride that he held for his engineering history instructed him that he could indeed do things without the Raven's current Chief Engineer. In fact, he was absolutely sure that he was more than up to the task of finding this mysterious rift-opening device. But to take the matter upon himself would be to step on McLean's toes as CEO.
"We should call him," Blakus said finally with a slight sigh. He tapped his commbadge, =/\=Commander McLean, this is Commander Blakus. Bring yourself or one of your team to transporter room 2 for an away mission to the enemy ship. Mister Jamison believes he may have found evidence of this 'rift-device' that could take us home.=/\=
<Tag McLean - (OOC: If unable to due to RL I shall make it so one of the junior engineers has accompanied the team)>
The XO and CTSO made it to to the transporter room and waited for the appropriate engineer to arrive. Blakus looked at the transporter pad. It would be his first time ever leading an away mission from a Starfleet vessel, but it was no problem. On the USS Victory, he had commanded a team into unknown territory; while not in command in the full away team, he had effectively been in control. Again, as he had discovered about so many other things while being first officer, this was no different.
The engineer arrived. Blakus, absently mindedly rubbing at his right arm, stepped onto the pad of the transporter. The engineer, Jamison and his security team followed. "Beam us as close as possible to the anomaly in the bulkhead," Blakus ordered the transporter chief. "Energise," he said and the transporter washed over the Starfleet officers.
They materialised in a dark, cramped corridor. =/\=Raven, XO. We are safely aboard, I am proceeding to the bulkhead.=/\=
<Tag Torek>
The XO looked around, drawing his tricorder and looking at the others around him. There was what looked like 'junk' piled up the sides of the corridor, and there was something dripping from the ceiling, breaking the silence every now and then with the splash of a liquid droplet on the steel-grate floor.
"Begin scans," he ordered. "Look for any lifesigns, we want to make sure we're alone. Commander Jamison?" The CTSO had been visually scanning the surroundings and now his head turned sharply to look at Blakus.
"You have point," Blakus said encouragingly, indicating down the dark corridor that faded into blackness. He grinned sardonically as the CTSO passed him with phaser drawn, heading down the corridor towards the anomalous bulkhead that the group had pinpointed.
Torek watched the ship with a sense of trepidation. He wasn't used to not being the one leading an away team, and he didn't much like the feeling of helplessness that suddenly swept over him. It was unfounded of course, because he had every confidence in his Exec' and the other Officers accompanying him ... Suddenly, the Comm chirped into life. =^= Raven .. XO .. We are safely aboard .. I am proceeding to the bulkhead =^= "Scans show the away team are still alone over there Captain." the duty Tactical Officer said. =^= You heard that Mister Blakus ? =^= =^= Yes Sir .. Our scans show the same =^= =^= All the same Andae .. Be careful .. There's no way of knowing if they have some way to shield themselves as well as that device your after =^= =^= Aye Sir .. Blakus out =^= The Comm closed, Carl rose from his seat and walked to the massive view-screen, as if the close proximity would allow him to see inside the ship itself. "Mister Marcus. Make sure the transporter room keep a lock on the away team. I want them pulled back here at the first sign of trouble." Carl said, as he watched the alien vessel hang motionless in space .......... < tag: ALL (Come on everyone) >
Will moved passed the other members of the away team and began following the route showing on his tricorder. While everything showed them to be alone, Will just couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. A moment later, he spotted what was creeping him out. He pointed so that the others could see.
"Monitors along the corridor." he stated. " Guess they really like keeping tabs on things." he jokingly added.
They continued down the corridor and a few more feet and finally came to a halt at their destination. With a quick nod of his head, the two other security men he had brought each went a few feet down the corridor in each direction and stood guard just in case. Will than turned to the Engineer.
"I guess it's your show now." Will said as he stepped back and took a position across the corridor for the enigineer and the XO.
"We'll lose that runner if we take time to do a full scan on the remaining ship." Marcus pointed out.
"So ...." Torek said, watching the viewscreen, "Which is it to be ?"
As all bridge officers and crew were fixed on the view screen, Lewis hoped they wouldnt loose sight of scanning both ships. Then Commander Blakus gave out orders:
"Helm, warp speed, let's catch up with that fleeing ship. Tactical, lock the tractor beam on the vessel that's remained behind, and continue to scan it."
"Aye sir" replied Lewis before putting the ship on high warp after the ship fleeing at high speed. However the ship was easy to catch up with. "Commander were several kilometres off the ship ahead" announced Lewis. The Captain then followed the Doctor into his office, off the bridge. As he returned he agreed Conmmander Blakus should take an away team over to the enemy ship to help get the Raven home through the rift. Lewis hoped they would as the rift had left them many light years from Earth, taking years to return. He also saw the apprehension on the Captain's face.
=^= Raven .. XO .. We are safely aboard .. I am proceeding to the bulkhead =^=
The Captain seemed more confident in the away team's abilities as he walked towards the view screen, with the alien ship still empty showing. Lewis felt the fear the Captain had let him know he was ready if they were quickly beamed back to the transporter room:
"Sir I'm ready for warp if the worst happens, after a beam back"
Andae moved aside as the engineer Commander McLean had assigned to the team started scanning the bulkhead. Tricorder out, he began moving down the side of that wall, looking for, Blakus hoped, conspicuous modifications that may be concealing devices.
The Raven's first officer stood back at first, letting the engineer, Lieutenant Moore, work. When he started taking too long, in the XO's opinion, Blakus intervened. "Let's see," he said, looking over the shoulder of the engineer at his tricorder. "Try scanning on a higher frequency."
But the man was ahead of Blakus, "I've got something," he said, "A section of this wall has been charged with thoron particles. I think I can break through if I - "
"I've seen this before," Blakus cut in, "back on the Victory. The thorons were being used to inhibit sensors from picking up a reading. Pinpoint an area where the radiation is less dense, that should get you through it. This has to be where our rift-device is." The XO twisted around and looked at Commander Jamison who was on the other side of the corridor, keeping watch with his fellow security officers. The CTSO was correct, Blakus thought.
"Sir," the engineer got Blakus's attention. With a quick nod to Jamison in thanks, Blakus turned back to the bulkhead.
"Lieutenant?" he asked.
"I'm through the radiation, sir, I think I have something now." The tricorder made a few unusual noises. "Whoa, well there's something in here I've never seen before, something exotic." Moore focussed on his tricorder and stepped closer to the bulkhead, as if trying to see through whatever false boundary was between the away team and their objective. "It does, however, seem to bear resemblance to graviton and chroniton generation technology," he said it as if it was a normal thing to say. He looked up from his tricorder at the wall in front of them. "This wall's approximately one metre-thick, and there's atmosphere beyond it... I'm not detecting any hidden door activators or anything of the sort."
"Alright," Blakus muttered, he started thinking how they get through. A drip of water fell from the ceiling and landed on his hand. He smeared the dirty liquid off his hand on to his trouser leg. Why is it so damp here...?
Blakus got the two security guards looking for some clue as to how to get past the wall, for their seemed to be no other route. The 'bulkhead' in front of them was supposed to be part of the hull of the ship, not an internal wall separating two rooms. While the two security guards searched for hidden, Blakus decided to ask a question.
"Commander Jamison, Lieutenant Moore, based on the rather circumspect-looking structure surrounding this bulkhead, what would you say the probability was of a phaser successfully blasting this wall down without the ceiling coming down?"
<Tag>
"Then let's blast through this damn thing." Blakus drew his phaser along with Jamison, and fired on high setting at the wall. In an instant there was a bright flash at the wall's centre, and a large plume of dust came billowing out towards them, engulfing them and making them temporarily blind. Blakus cringed and squeezed his eyes shut, but kept his thumb compressed on the phaser's fire-button. Amidst the rolling of the smoke there was a sound. First, the noise of the wall cracking along its length and breaking down, and then the noise of gushing water. No... of course! Blakus thought in triumph and bitterness at the same time, triumph because he had figured it out, bitterness because he hadn't realised it earlier. The drips from the ceiling and been part of water pipes, pipes that went into that wall.
Water surged out of the destroyed pipes, hitting the away team full force on their fronts. Blakus was knocked off his feet and pushed towards the far wall, water continued to pile out of the ruptured wall, from the broken twisted endings of the one-metre diameter pipes. Blakus hadn't opened his eyes since the dust had enveloped him, at least the water was washing him clean. Just as he thought it was never going to stop, the pipes ran dry.
Drenched, the away team found their feet, and after regaining their bearings they started towards the blasted out wall. The hole in it was roughly circular, two/three metres in diameter, the edges jagged with broken plastisteel. Beyond the hole, a hazy light...
"Everybody report," Blakus called out to the away team, making sure everyone was still alive and within sight. He did not want to find out that one of them had been carried half-way around the ship by the tide of water. He spluttered out the rest of the water in his mouth as he made his way towards the hole.
The security guards grunted in response, Blakus located them, off to the left around the corner in the corridor, having been pushed away by the resistant water. "I'm alive," Lieutenant Moore called from somewhere.
"Ok," Blakus said slowly, trying to figure things out. "Let's find out what that light is." As he got closer, the XO could start to see more of the light source, it was on a pedestal, about a metre tall.. surely their objective. Relieved to find his commbadge still attached, Blakus tapped it: =/\=Blakus to Raven, we believe we have found the rift-device, I am proceeding with caution.=/\=
"I'd think it would be fine seeing as its just a facade wall,sir." Will answered.
He and the XO had no sooner gotten through with their phasers when they were met head on by rushing water. Will was hit with full force straight in his face and the blow knocked him completely off his feet and the rush of the water pulled him along with it as if he were caught in the under currents of the Tonopaugh Rapids on Elphi III. When the water finally subsided, Will found himself in a totally different area from where they were. He reached to tap his comm badge only to discovered that it was no longer there.
"Great." he muttered as he began to search around the immediate area. "No comm badge and no phaser. (for it too had got knocked out of his hand when he was hit by the rushing waters.) I truly hope there aren't any more of those fake walls hiding an army somewhere."
He began walking around to see if he could get his bearings. He assumed that he was still on the same deck. It had only been a few minutes since they broke through the wall and it hadn't seemed as if he went down any access tubes or shafts. About 10 min utes later, he came across their beam in point. "Finally." he said. He continued up the corridor until he came to the hole in the wall. No one else could be seen so he assumed that they had already entered. A look into the hole quickly proved him correct.
"Anything interesting sir?" he asked his water logged XO with a smile.
"Sir ... I think I can hear ... Water !" the duty Tactical Officer suddenly said.
"Water ?" Carl asked, puzzled.
"Looks like they have tried to burn through the bulkhead and inadvertently gone through one of the main water conduits in the bargain."
"Are they safe ?"
"Aye Sir." the woman replied, "Spread out a little from the surge, and no doubt very wet. But no fatalities from what I can see."
=^= Blakus to Raven .. We believe we have found the rift-device .. I am proceeding with caution =^=
=^= We detected water .. Is everything OK over there Commander ? =^= Carl said, trying hard not to let the obvious amusement get into his voice.
=^= Yes ... We cut through a erm small supply conduit .. Team is OK and we're entering the room now .. Blakus out =^=
The Comm closed quickly, and Torek, along with several of the Bridge crew laughed at the predicament the away team had just suffered.
"Keep a lock on them Mister Evens." Carl said the the duty Tactical Officer.
"Got a solid lock Sir." she replied.
Carl sat patiently, admittedly less patiently than he'd like, but all the same, quietly awaiting his away teams' next report ..........
