The astral void was solemn in its emptiness when U.S.S. Majesty entered the sector. The mission it was to undertake was to investigate the possibility of a dark matter nebula in one of the farthest corners of known space. The engineering section was working on probes that would excite any dark matter occupying the projected region. On the ship’s bridge the activity was more quiet than below as everyone awaited a couple of days of scanning with no guarantee that there was going to be anything to see. The captain was busy looking over the division reports when Aarons handed her something to look over.
“What’s this?” she asked him.
“Oh I was hoping to get a chance to have the engines retooled to achieve better responsive timing in both maneuvering and engaging warp.” She scrolled through the proposal finding tons of figures and numbers that would have taken too long to analyze.
“Alright but I want you to do it under Dyton’s supervision once he gets finished with all of this.” She signed off on it and handed it back to Michael who smiled gratefully and walked off. The captain then turned to her first officer. “How far has Engineering gotten with the probes, Number One?”
“They’ve completed two so far with another three on the way. The last two will be ready by tomorrow.”
“Is there any reason why we couldn’t fire one off tonight?” TEG thought for a second.
“I don’t suppose Ensign Kel would mind.” With permission from Engineering the first probe was loaded for use. The captain ordered Nik, along with the other science divisions, to prepare for the first surge of data to pour in once it hit.
“Fire away Will.” The probe shot out of the launcher into the region of space. Everyone watched in a breath of excitement hoping for something to hit. The probe drew closer then finally it hit resulting in… nothing! “Nik, what did you get?”
“All worked up for nothing, but… I did find something that may indicate dark matter.”
“Excellent. Get to work on it and we’ll see about it tomorrow.” The day shift turned in early and left the bridge to the relief crew while Nik worked on.
TEG was on his way to go by Rachel’s quarters to see how she was. He stood outside her door about to chime when he noticed the hallway was empty; he thought he remembered there being others trafficking the corridor moments ago. He chimed the door but there was no response prompting him to do so again. Not getting a response still he found that the doors hadn’t been locked so he stepped inside.
The inside was dishelved and toward the corner, leaning against the wall by a smashed coffee table was Rachel who seemed very distraught. There were cuts all over her body and she was bleeding. He rushed to her to her, his breathing heavy. She turned to look up at him, some of her features withered, and he stopped.
“Why didn’t you come for me TEG? Why didn’t you come?!” She was terribly sad.
“No! I looked all over for you!”
“You weren’t there! There was nothing!” From the corner of her eye there was a trace of blood beginning to come out.
“Rachel I tried!” The pain was welling up.
“I was all alone and you thought I was dead!”
“No, no, it’s not true! I always hoped you were still alive somewhere!” The pain and the torment were immense. He wanted to go to her but he couldn’t and she became further and further away from him in nothingness. Suddenly she was at the far end of a dark corridor of a Black Tal-Opal ship as described by Hawk and Kay being lead away by their operatives. The lights began to strobe in a sort of madness.
“You didn’t come. You let them take me away.” He completely lost it.
“No! I never wanted that!” He was reaching out for her as she disappeared while he remained there collapsed on his knees crying like a broken man.
Hawk was talking to the captain. He was sharing his thoughts with her as he often enjoyed doing becoming a bit closer to her. Suddenly there was blackness when everything that was there ceased to be. Hawk was now in a dead wood, blue moonlight shining through as the mists made it nearly impossible to see anything in the eerie silence of this foreboding place. There was sort of a damp feeling about it, like nowhere he had ever been before. Moving forward along the path, he could hear a clacking sound which unnerved him. He drew closer to the sound when ahead in the distance he saw what appeared to be three armored figures. They were poking their weapons at the body of a dead Starfleet officer who was slumped over the bodies of a few civilians she no doubt failed to protect with her life. Hawk could see off in the distance the beacon of a colony. They were outside the Henley colony on Atrea prime, where he’d visited a few weeks ago, which was beautiful. The three figures wore heavy birdlike armor and wielded their battle weapons as they stood over the corpses silently observing their kill. The clacking sound Hawk had heard earlier was the clacking from the battle talons they wore. The beaks on their armor were quite sharp looking and deadly. Seeing these Falconian warriors for Hawk was dreadful. Invasion! Death! No mercy! They looked up and gazed upon him. Hawk could see into their dead soulless eyes through the openings of their armored masks. They slowly came toward Hawk who was in a panic when the warriors let out their battle shriek and charged!
Kay walked onto the bridge. Everyone from the senior staff was present. She looked and saw that Michael was the captain.
“Good morning Kaylanna, how are you doing today?”
Kay, Hawk, and TEG violently woke from their disturbing dreams. The three scurried to the bar where they each hoped to ease the disturbing memories haunting them. They entered and found the place full bony wraiths and overseeing it was Aarons.
“What the Hell is going on in here!?” Michael stood there with a cocky smile and pulled out the report he had given her earlier. He scrolled through it before handing it to her. “Permission is given to use the ship’s bar for Death’s FAMILY REUNION!!?”
“Oh Captain, I can’t thank you enough for allowing me to have this opportunity to reunite with my relatives and begrudged ones.”
“You’re… welcome?” Just then another shrouded specter showed up dark and cheery.
“Oh well now what brings y’all down to this little get-together?!”
“Say hi to the little banshee everyone.” They said hi.
“We seemed to be suffering from bad nightmares,” TEG said.
“Oh that’s just Jr.’s dream-eater. We’re so proud!” Hawk and TEG moved over to the bar hoping to get something to ease their sorrows. Kay spotted Liz chatting it up with some dead heads wearing a provocative little she-vampire costume.
“Well aren’t we just a little underdressed.” Kay slipped up behind her.
“I thought I’d show and get into the spirit of things and it gives Michael some eye candy.” She smiled devilishly. Over at the bar things were a little different. Hawk and TEG found one of the ship’s locals behind the bar.
“Johnson, what are you doing here?”
“Well sir they needed a bartender and so I accepted.”
“What do you have this evening?”
“We got green stuff and red stuff.” Two barrels sat behind the bar. One was churning and spewing from under the lid while the other shimmered with a haunting red glow.
“Which do you recommend?”
“Neither.” They looked at each other disturbed.
“Any water?” Hawk asked.
“Yeah, but Atomic Skull is using it to keep his head dowsed.” They got up and left.
Over at one of the tables, Aarons was going to take a seat only to find a rib bone curiously sitting in it. He gave a puzzled look and moved on. On the other side of the room Kay was having a sit with Mother Death who was showing her the same picture of Death.
“And this is Death when he graduated, and here he is before that going to prom.” Kay sat there, worn out, listening.
“He looks much better in… that one.” She pointed at one of the photos.
“Oh you think so?!” She got excited. “Are you by any chance seeing anyone?”
“Er, as a matter of fact I am. Him.” She pointed at Hawk.
“Well he seems like such a pill.”
Nik walked into the bar, his work still on his mind. He didn’t pay any of it much attention; it was usually this dead at that hour. He ordered a little bit of the green with some red. Meanwhile Liz was having an interesting conversation some of the other guests.
“So what do you bone boys do?”
“Well my experience has been in film. I had a small part in Jason and the Argonauts.”
“Oh, who as?”
“One of the Argonauts.”
“How about you?” she asked the other who was blue. “Death by Asphyxiation?”
“No I’m part of the Blue Man Group, we’ve been dying for years.”
Over at the catering table Hawk was trying to find something to snack on. There were strange concoctions littering the table to which he wasn’t sure to label as food.
“Do you know this stuff is moving?” He asked one of the family members.
“Actually it starts off not moving.” Hawk excused himself and ran to the bathroom.
As Nik sat at the bar with his ‘drink’ he became aware that sitting next to him on the bar was a rib bone. He cocked a brow and found it to be rather silly. He tried to ignore it but felt it just sitting there staring at him.
“Beat it,” he said feeling humorous. He turned back, shocked to see it was gone. He continued to partake of his beverage when his face lit up and he excitedly rushed off.
Aarons was sitting there joined by a young ghoul who couldn’t seem to keep her hands off of him; or her head up.
“So, are you here with anyone? Oops, heehee!” She corrected her neck.
“Yeah, her.” He pointed across the room.
“Who? The one with the plague?”
“No, the one with the ridges.” He pointed to Liz.
“Wow, she’s beautiful!” she said, her head kept dangling all over the place as she strived to keep it standing up.
“I know.” He sat there gazing at her.
“Have you made any plans?”
“Tonight or later?” She giggled. Michael got up and walked over to Liz putting his arm around her. “Want to go have a nibble?” he asked her. She smirked and they slinked off.
TEG was moving through the crowd when he smelt something overpowering.
“Excuse me ma’am, what is that horrible smell? Calvin Klein?”
“No, Miasma. Want a whiff?” She sprayed some his way. He choked on the smell and collapsed to the floor.
“Hey I think he likes it!” one of them whooped.
Kay was sitting by herself while all the pandemonium was going on. She was thinking of all the ways to get Michael back for this while and about the next day’s work. She felt something on her ankle. She looked down to see a rib bone leaning against her leg. She reached down and picked it up. She looked at it and wondered what it was doing there against her leg.
“Oh has anyone seen Jr.!? Anyone?” Mrs. Death was searching around frantically for her little baby when she came to Kay. “Have you seen Jr. anywhere? I’ve been looking all around for him?” Kay just shrugged.
“All I found was this,” she held up the bone that had been leaning against her.
“Oh Jr., you found him!” She hugged the little bone close to her.
“Wait, that’s Jr.!?”
“He’s just like his father. Soon he’ll start growing a sternum. Before you know it he’ll be causing heart attacks in the elderly and looming around the Borg.” Kay just looked at her like she were crazy and tried to maintain her own shred of sanity.
“Oh look! Ooh!” Everyone rushed to the windows to see what was going on.
“Oh isn’t it just lovely!” Kay looked and saw the last remnants of an excited dark matter nebula before it burned out. Suddenly the bridge called.
“Captain, we were successfully able to determine the location of the dark matter clusters and set off the probe in the garden spot!”
“Great.” She slumped into a chair as a mild depression took over. Everyone was into the swing of things as some were singing karaoke of Arthur Brown's greatest hits.
“Hey everybody, who’s hungry?!” Death stood there in his Kill the Cook apron.
“What are you having, fire and brimstone?”
“No, tofu.” AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!!!!!
