Commander Savot sat in the center seat upon the bridge of the El Salvador as the weeks of Shore Leave ship and crew had been given came to a close, none too soon for most of the crew it seemed. Savot was intrigued by the reactions he'd seen in almost all of the senior officers he'd known about this vessel; most seemed to actually prefer being on-duty over the few and far between moments of unguided recreation they were given. It was an admirable trait on the whole and the vulcan felt priviledged to have a crew so duty-minded.
The entire ship's compliment had returned aboard and been officially accounted over the past 12 hours, and the El Salvador was soon ready to break Earth orbit and proceed onward toward another mission. All personnel ready and willing, the vulcan commander gave breakaway orders to the helm, "Break orbit, helmsman. Set course for the Rhylan Caliopus system, and engage at Warp Factor 4." The mighty vessel seemed to fall away from the blue-green orb of Earth, angling into the blackness of space before shooting forth towards her destination, the stretching pinpricks of stars filling the main viewer.
"ETA 2.7 Terran-standard days, sir", came the report from the navigation officer, unusually formal as some of the more junior officers erred on the side of high-protocol as they became used to their vulcan CO. Savot acknowledged the report and activated the intraship comms on his chair arm console sending his next words throughout the entire vessel, =^=Savot to senior officers: Report to the briefing room in 2 hours for details of our next assignment. Bridge out.=^=
For those officers currently on the bridge it was only logical to infer that whatever the next assignment was, it wasn't anything requiring lightning-fast emergency response or they'd have used a higher warp speed to get to the requisite location. With the dire nature of their last several missions, even some of their just-completed shore leave, it would doubtless come as a welcome diversion to some not to have to contend with the tension of immediacy. With luck this assignment would give newer officers a chance to get used to the ship's systems and routine, and give everyone the opportunity to become more familiar with their crewmates.
(Just starting off the next mission thread so people have a place to post if their typing fingers get itchy. The detail-disbursing portion of the briefing will get put up by either myself or Commander Zimmerman either later today or by tomorrow night definitely. As suggested in the post I'd like to have this mission focus mainly on crew-interaction and cooperation as opposed to our typical 'firefight' fallback option. That doesn't mean we have to restrain ourselves to watching the grass grow via tricorder, but let's try to keep the focus off of outright combat as much as possible. Above all though the target is as always to have fun and produce great stories, so best of luck to us all.)
(P.S. Mcleod, didn't mean to cut off what you were doing at the end of the last thread, if you want to keep going with that please feel free to copy/paste your last post into this thread so it can be more easily read as reference for wherever you go with it.)
(P.P.S. Apologies to those who'd previously read my post, the ETA is supposed to be in days not hours, which it now reflects. Pardon the mistake.)

Word had flown through the ship that departure was imminent. Ainsleigh had barely slept and had gotten up early. Taking great care with her appearance and uniform, she dressed for the day.
Before going to bed, she'd made sure the insignia on all her uniforms had been changed from those of a Lt. to a Lt. Commander. Not as dramatic as it sounded needing only to add a half pip, but it held alot of meaning for the young officer. When she'd returned to her quarters the message light on her computer had been blinking softly. It was from a friend of hers from the academy. It was congratulations from Park joking about her unexpected promotion. Smiling and thinking to herself, "Leave it to Jon to keep up with their class." Fond memories of the foursome of cadets sprang to mind. She wondered how B'reca and Andae were doing. "Well, at least they got posted together."
Taking a final deep breath to calm nerves and taking a final look in the mirror, McLeod was satisfied. The deep blue of her uniform contrasted beautifully with her auburn hair. A laugh escaped her lips thinking fictitiously that Starfleet must have had that in mind when they chose this shade of blue.
A quick stop by her office before heading to the bridge she met Ensign Amana coming in, a cup of coffee in one hand. It was the first human sign she'd seen from him. Spotting her, he seemed embarrassed at being caught with the cup as though he'd was doing something not in the manual.
Trying to put the officer at ease, "Smells good," with an acknowledged nod at the offending cup. "I'm on my way to the bridge. Did engineering check out Lt. Moseley's console?"
"Yes Sir," the punctilious Ensign responded, "It was a hardware failure that they replaced."
"So the universe isn't ending," Ainsleigh smiled at the image of Moseley, arms flailing, in her office.
Amana's back stiffened, if that was possible, even more then normal, "Lt. Moseley was out of ...."
McLeod cut him off with a slight raising off her hand, "Keep an eye on the port long range sensor." They'd just recalibrated it after finding a discrepancy in the readings.
Entering the bridge and seeing the Captain already there, she nodded at him in acknowledgment when he looked her direction. Relieving the officer at the science station, "Everything ready?"
"Yes Sir," responded the older gentleman. A momentary blank on the man's name before she put the face to name.
"Thank you, Lt. Albion." She could have used the ubiquitous Lt., but she needed to know all her staff. The man was her cartographer and mentally she pulled up his personnel file. "Did you get a chance to see your wife?"
His eyes lit up, "Yes Sir, her ship arrived two days ago. Thank you." They switched places as he left the bridge.
"Break orbit, helmsman. Set course for the Rhylan Caliopus system, and engage at Warp Factor 4.", came the Captain's order.
A shot of adrenalin rushed through McLeod and she turned to watch the viewscreen. The receding earth held no real meaning for her, it wasn't her homeworld, but she was surprised to find herself feeling something, she couldn't quite tell what, but feeling emotion at the sight.
The jump to warp still fascinated the science officer and she never tired of seeing the stars stretch out before her. Turning back to pay attention to the readings scrolling by on her screens, she tapped her commbadge, =/\= Ensign Amana, report to the bridge in two hours. =/\=

John had been stayin in his quaters for some time, he wasnt sure how long was left, he had lost track of all time am the seconds, turned to minutes, and then hours. There wasnt much he could do until some one came down to tell him his time confined was over, he assumed it would be Savot.
John just lay on his bed as he had done most of the time, unless he was having a quick play on one of his guitars, or using the bathroom, and now and again eatting and drinking. It was getting tedious, he just wanted out of the walls that hwere constricting him. He thought about the past few days, the whole operation, and how for all it had gone well, how he wished he had never got involved.
"Its all in the past, I cant hold on and regert, I have to move forward" he said to him self out loud, then he got up, and grabed a drink, as he had grown acustom to, it was whisky, and he downed it in one foul swoop, the replicated another, and another, he was already up to his 6th when he ordered another, and sat on the end of his bed to think once more.

(OOC: This post will be fastforwarded to the time of the briefing. Anybody wanting to do things beforehand can feel free to backpost those actions in before writing your briefing responses if any. Mr. Roberts, you can feel free to assume your 48 hours are up by the time of the briefing. Savot would trust you not to end your confinement prematurely so you can just have had the computer tell you when your time was up and leave your quarters anytime thereafter.)
*******************************************************
Two hours later Commander Savot sat at the head of the briefing room table facing his gathering of senior staff. All had arrived on time he was pleased to note and they all looked focussed and ready to attend to business. "As some of you are already aware the El Salvador is currently en route to the Rhylan Caliopus system where we've been ordered to evaluate Rhylan Caliopus 3 and its population."
"Approximately 1 year ago the planet completed full-spectrum terraforming to an Earth-comparable M-Class environment. At this time a Federation colony of an estimated 75 persons was deployed on the surface for a probationary period to ensure the environmental changes had firmly taken root. As is standard Federation procedure to undergo both medical and scientific evaluation 12 months after such a deployment, we have been ordered to carry out said evaluations", the vulcan finished giving the general overview before turning to individual officers to dole out specific assignments.
"Lieutenant Commander Mcleod, you'll be tasked with conducting in-depth sensor scans of Rhylan Caliopus 3 to confirm or refute the permanency of the terraforming efforts. I would also like you to launch a probe for readings on the system's star itself to ensure no anamolies from that front threaten the planet's populace", Savot handed a padd down the table toward her as he continued speaking, "This contains both the planetary readings taken 12 months ago prior to seeding the colony and the projected parameters the environment would fall within at this time. Any extreme deviations from these anticipated parameters should be immediately reported to medical as they might place the colony members at risk."
Another padd he gave to the Counselor, "Commander Rylka, these are the personal records of each colony member. I want you to schedule meetings with all of them, whether individually or in groups is at your own discretion, to determine their psychological fitness under the circumstances of their past 12 months. Additionally the Federation Terraforming Council desires the leadership effectiveness of Governor Leem Dris, a Bolian. Naturally his record preceding this assigment is impressive or he would not have been assigned as the colony's governor, but the hierarchical effectiveness of the colony is of equal importance to the Federation as the success of the terraforming. You may approach this as you see fit, simply keep me apprised of your progress and inform me if you require additional resources."
Clasping his hands together atop the table surface Savot merely looks toward Lt. Commander Roberts as the briefing progressed, "Mr. Roberts, either in concert with or separate from the Counselor's efforts I want you to investigate the level of criminal activity, if any, of the colony over the period in question. Again, nefarious acts aren't suspected as the screening process for initial colony members is quite strenuous, but all facets of colonial stability must be confirmed before the Federation can further progress populating the planet and increasing the infrastructure. The same personnel files given to Commander Rylka will be at your disposal as well throughout your investigations."
"Colonel Wolf, at the offset your assignment will simply be to maintain security aboard ship whilst Mr. Roberts is otherwise occupied. However, should either he or Commander Rylka require assistance in dealing with the populace I want you and your team to be prepared."
"Mr. Hope, likewise your own assignment will be primarily to maintain ship's efficiency throughout the assignment, though if Science or Medical require further technical resources I'd like you to be prepared to accomodate their needs."
Tilting his head towards his First Officer Savot concludes his lengthy initial-phase of the briefing before taking input or addressing questions, "Finally, Commander Zimmerman will supervise the entire groundside portion of the operation and will be on hand to address any issues the rest of you may face, or if necessary relay them to me aboard the ship. I recommend taking a pair of shuttlecraft to the planet's surface and appropriating one of the colony buildings as a temporary headquarters if any are available without causing undue strain on the colony's efficiency, and constructing a simple modular office along the camp's borders if the buildings present are all unavailable."
As a final explanation before allowing the questions to come forth Savot lifted his right hand in an open-palmed 'wait' gesture before continuing, "I'm aware this seems a peculiar type of assignment for a vessel of the El Salvador's class and specialization. Doubtless a purely scientific vessel would be better suited to carry out the assignment more quickly than an assault ship. However, it is precisely the El Salvador's combat-specialization that is troubling some segments of the Federation."
"Given both the relatively peace Starfleet has enjoyed of late with the other major galactic powers, and pressure within the political arena from those same powers to 'step down' our number of battleships Starfleet is reviewing its Fleet assignments trying to discern whether ships designed primarily for combat are both politically supportable and cost-effective during peacetime. Ergo, we are being given an entirely benign task to perform, the efficiency with which we complete it to be evaluated by both a Starfleet panel and Federation committees to determine if it's within the best interests of the Federation to continue maintaining the current number of Prometheus-class vessels."
"I have already defended the logic of maintaining the El Salvador in its current design to my immediate superiors but I was assured the decision was being contemplated at such a high level of administration and by such a broad spectrum of departments that individual reports were of no consequence. However, having said this I re-iterate to all of you that our concern here is not justify the El Salvador's place in the fleet. We are not to take on this assignment with the intention of proving a point; we will follow our orders to the best of our ability because the current populace of Rhylan Caliopus 3 and any future development upon that world deserve the best of our ability. I only mentioned the circumstances of our being given this assignment because I knew many of you would ask the same question I asked when I first received the orders, and there is to be no further discussion on the matter while on duty."
Reclasping his hands and lifting his head a bit higher Savot then took in his entire staff in a glance, "Now, having said that, are there mission-specific questions? My personal knowledge does not far exceed what I've already relayed to you and what's contained in your individual padds but I will attempt to clarify what I am able."

Ethan listened quietly but attentively to Captain Savot's briefing. Ethan found this mission rather odd, but he wasn't about to coplain. A little peace and quiet would do everyone well. This mission would allow Ethan to bring up efficiency to a more respectable level. His new efficieny goal was 98.3 percent and if everything went well they would reach it in record time.
"Now, having said that, are there mission-specific questions? My personal knowledge does not far exceed what I've already relayed to you and what's contained in your individual padds but I will attempt to clarify what I am able."
"Have the colonist kept regular communications with the Federation?" Ethan asked noticing that no mention was made in there padds.

Listening to Commander Savot and there mission, he was happy for a change. It was about time they got a normal mission, one that didn't involve life and death. He was concerned about what the mission meant could a war ship be tasked with other missions then war.
He also noticed that Commander Roberts didn't look to happy. He had heard what Commander Savot had done and didn't agree with it. In his mind the commander did his job to the best of his abilitys. That was the problem with secert missions they were always to dam secert in his mind. He would make a point of talking to roberts later on to try and help him if he could.
Looking around the room and listend to the questions Commander Hope was asking. It was a good question. Then looking at the commander Savot " Sir I understand this is to be a normal mission for a change. Are there any reports that would hint somethings is a miss from other ships visiting the planet. I under stand what Starfleet is trying to do and I'm not implying that somethings is going on. Its just I'm wondering Why this mission and not deep space explorations. We would have been better suited for that then this we are not quite set up to be a transport vessel. Saying that neither would a science vessel for that matter, so it does make one ask why this mission."

"Have the colonist kept regular communications with the Federation?" asked Ethan.
Kevin cleared his throat. "A colony is... less than ideally equipped, especially at this stage, to remain in constant communication with the rest of the Federation. However, the colony does have the ability to send and recieve subspace messages. They have filed a non-descript report every three months informing the Federation that nothing is significantly amiss, but it is entirely possible that a minor incident would not have been reported, and may even have been forgotten. If something breaks, there are spares. The civilians were not extensively trained as we were, and it may not have occured to them that if a tool fails or a batch of food spoils, such problem should be noted in their tri-monthly report."
Wolf looking at the commander Savot " Sir I understand this is to be a normal mission for a change.
Again, Kevin cleared his throat, though this time in an effort to defend his (former) department. "Actually, it is vital in the terraforming process to have a qualified scientist - such as Commander McLeod - to do everything Captain Savot explained at the beginning of the briefing. A mere transport vessel is not typically carrying a scientist with the education and material to accurately accomplish those goals. We also picked up a lot of new people, and some of them need to get a feel for how our various departments are run. This mission will allow everyone to do something - if Commander Roberts does not require help in completing his duties, Colonel, you will have a rare opportunity to run an exercise on unfamiliar, open terrain, as opposed to a holodeck simulation. So long as you make sure not to leave anything behind, of course."

Ainsleigh had sat beside Roberts, but he barely nodded his acknowledgment of her greeting. Not having heard what had transpired with John after their unexpected involvement in Kevin's rescue, she assumed that something at tactical was bothering him. It was not the time for small talk, so she kept quiet.
After the Captain's briefing, questions swirled around her head, but until she could read the information on the PADD Savot had passed her way, she would keep them to herself. Soil, water, air samples would need to be taken. Flora and fauna needed examined. So much to do in the brief time before their arrival.
Terraforming a planet was an enormous investment in resources and in her brief time in Starfleet, McLeod had picked up a cynical outlook for those in power. The politics behind the colony wouldn't take kindly to any interference in its continued existence.
It would not be in the colonist's best interest to report any anomolies that they didn't consider relevant. The scientist in her would only base her assessment of the situation on her own teams readings.
Listening to the other officer's questions and statements, McLeod also thought that a science vessel would have had a much larger staff available for this job, but wasn't worried that it would be too big a job for her department to handle. She knew that she could tap the medical department to run some of the organic chemistry tests and if necessary to handle some of the fauna.
If necessary, she would not let ego get in the way of asking the First Officer for help if the situation warranted it. Having finished a quick look at the settler's reports, it didn't look as if anything was wrong. It's just that with terraforming there were so many variables.
Already McLeod had prepared her assignments. The cartographer would be assigned to do the sensor work of both the planet and its sun. Ensign Amana would be tasked to stay aboard and to coordinate the tests on samples sent back to the ship. She, herself would lead one of the teams.
"Upon arrival, I will have three teams of four ready to go. I'll give the coordinates for each team at that time." She had already decided to take her team to the colony

Tiffani had been in her quarters, a place she found herself more frequently than not. She had mixed emotions about the death of her child, did it really happen? how could she let it happen. most importantly why didn't Felix come to her rescue, she was sure that news of a star fleet ship under distress would travel quickly among the star fleet higher command, she shook her head and placed the picture of her and her old family once more on the mantel piece and looked around her quarters. when she was suddenly interrupted in her thoughts.
Savot acknowledged the report and activated the intraship comms on his chair arm console sending his next words throughout the entire vessel, =^=Savot to senior officers: Report to the briefing room in 2 hours for details of our next assignment. Bridge out.=^=
Tiffani sighed, new assignments meant new troubles, she looked around and noticed that everything was finally re-organized, she decided to take this time to relax a bit in front of the cozy holo projected fireplace a program her father had made long ago and given to her as a present, she picked up a book entitled "Falcon Moon by Cassie Edwards" and went to the couch to sit in front of it and read. It seemed like only a short while had passed when Tiffani decided to stop and place the book on her end table to continue reading at a later time. She raised and made her way to the briefing room as she entered she noticed all but her was already there, as soon as she took her seat the Captain began his speech. she listened quietly observing the others noticing a bit of somewhat apprehension in the room she shrugged it off and listened to the captain give out orders, before long he was addressing her.
Another padd he gave to the Counselor, "Commander Rylka, these are the personal records of each colony member. I want you to schedule meetings with all of them, whether individually or in groups is at your own discretion, to determine their psychological fitness under the circumstances of their past 12 months. she nodded *understood Captain* then she listened as he gave out the rest of the orders and finished up his speech.
"Now, having said that, are there mission-specific questions? My personal knowledge does not far exceed what I've already relayed to you and what's contained in your individual padds but I will attempt to clarify what I am able."
she listened as a few other officers asked some question, making note as she looked at the padds before her. *she frowned slightly at some of the Captain and First Officers responses.
*Captain* she said suddenly *would it be at all possible to walk among the colonist and get a feel of how they interact among one another. i have come to realize that people act and think totally different when in groups rather then one on one.* She paused *I also think it would be good for Security and Counseling to work as a team, it would benefit both*

John listened and then chiped in a bit, "I concour captain, it would be worth getting to know some of the people on the surface, get afeel for how people feel, if they feel safe or not, and as Commander Rylka pointed out, it would be a good oppotunity for security and counseling to strike up some kind of relatioship" John said, ending and waiting for a reply from either Tiff or Savot.

Savot listened as Kevin expounded on the information they had so far, nodding silently in agreement with his First Officer's sentiments on the issues. As Kevin finished and Commander Mcleod stated her department's readiness, Commander Rylka spoke up, *Captain* she said suddenly *would it be at all possible to walk among the colonist and get a feel of how they interact among one another? I have come to realize that people act and think totally different when in groups rather than one on one.* She paused *I also think it would be good for Security and Counseling to work as a team, it would benefit both.*
John Roberts listened and then chimed in a bit as well, "I concur captain, it would be worth getting to know some of the people on the surface, get a feel for how people feel, if they feel safe or not, and as Commander Rylka pointed out, it would be a good opportunity for security and counseling to strike up some kind of relatioship." John said, ending and waiting for a reply from either Tiff or Savot.
The vulcan nodded without delay at the comments of both officers, "I agree that seems a sensible course of action at this time. You may determine your intended 'plan of attack', so to speak, between your two departments."
Turning and looking first to Ethan then Kevin he made another note, "Monitor the colony's assigned frequency for any emergency calls, but do not make contact to inform them of our arrival until we enter orbit. Commander Zimmerman, adjust crew rotations to have all senior staff at their stations at least 1 hour prior to our arrival. Are there any further questions or comments before we disperse?"

Looking at commander Savot and thinking for a moment." Sir if our mission is to gather information on them. To see how they have coped with there jobs and life, why not send a advance team. We would take a high warp shuttle and sneak in with out them knowing. We dont have to make contact with them just observer. By doing this we are seeing there true selves. We all know how we get when we are being studyed, we always put our best effort forward. This way we can see how they really are by observing wearing cloaking suites."
Pausing for a moment "I'm not trying to make this a secert covert mission but we do the same on first contact missions. To see how people will act well this is kind of the samething, not to mention it would give the departments more insight on what they are seeing is real or a act. maybe we will learn something that could be useful. Since this would be more like a first contact then science departs and counseling departments should take the lead."
He sat back and hoped that his idea didn't sound so far fetched, he just thought if it worked on first contact why not here as well.

Wolf spoke up again at that point with a suggestion of his own, "Sir if our mission is to gather information on them; To see how they have coped with there jobs and life, why not send an advance team. We would take a high warp shuttle and sneak in without them knowing. We dont have to make contact with them just observer. By doing this we are seeing their true selves. Since this would be more like a first contact then science departs and counseling departments should take the lead."
Savot responded without hesitation, "Your recommendation and reasoning behind it are not without merit, Colonel, but these are Federation colonists and as such I do not believe it appropriate to reconoiter among them without their knowledge and full participation. I agree with your assessment that many people put forth an idealized effort when they are aware of inspection, which is why we will not make contact until we've achieved orbit around the planet. It is in their own best interests to inform us if something is awry on the planet or their lives may well be at risk, and if something is being hidden within the workings of the community, it will not be able to remain hidden indefinitely."
Taking in the entire group once more the vulcan inquired again, "Any further questions or concerns?"

He was trying to be helpful in some way but felt like he was beating his head against the roof. Maybe he had spent to much time with black ops, he just thought it might be useful in learning what made these people tick.
" I understand Commander I hope my idea was not to far out of line. I will of course need to work with Lt Commander Roberts on possible drills while on surface, in which case he will need to be free from his quarters to meet with me and plan some possible drills. Which can not be cared out in his quarters. If I'm to do this then I would hope that my opion on how to best accomplish this would be respected. I will make sure that Roberts does not have any fun at all." He looked back at roberts and gave him a littl wink.

As the group departed, McLeod spoke to Colonel Wolf, "I'm assigning two teams to take readings away from the settlement. I'd like them to have," and here she paused, choosing her words, "protection." Then in an effort to lighten the meaning, "You never know, they could have had livestock or pets escape and have packs of wild boar roaming the countryside."
Ainsleigh hurried to her office. The doors to the department had no sooner opened and she was giving orders to her staff. "Get twelve field kits ready for immediate departure."
"Ensigns Milak, T'Lar, Osan, Goya, Lt's Moseley, Michaels, Barker, Vasha, Belsin, Gowalski and T'Ka report to my office stat." The officers reported in with the exception of Belsin and T'ka. They were on sleep rotation and she gave them extra time to get ready.
Giving her teams a briefing on what she expected, "Milak, Michaels and Vasha will be with me. We first want air and water samples sent for analysis to Ensign Amana. Then soil and flora and fauna. On the biologics, insects and small creatures only. Larger animals take scat samples and images, but until we access the situation, don't disturb them if possible."
The two late arrivals entered, and Ainsleigh told their team leaders to catch them up to speed. "We are on a recon mission to check on the success or failure of a terraforming operation. It should not be a hostile situation, but no away team member, now or any other time will leave this ship without a phasor. Do I make myself clear?"
A couple of the officers exchanged glances but all nodded their understanding. "Safety first, report to transporter room 1 upon arrival at the planet."
Knowing that they were close to the hour mark, Ainsleigh took her field pack with her and headed to the armory to get a phasor before taking her position on the bridge.

John noticed the wink, and tried not to laugh, or even smile. After that people began to filter out the observation lounge, John stoped for a moment to talk to Wolf, about the possible drills which he had in mind, or if he would rarther meet up later and plan it.
John wasnt sure what kind of drills they could run, and thought it would be much better to run training exercises, although, John did have to work out what kind of criminal activity was also going on, that could too be a part of it, gaining weaponary, through the acctual people on the surface. This would also give them experiance with other types of weapons besides standard federation gear.

Ainsleigh looked up from her console as she felt the ship drop out of warp and go to subspace. Watching the planet enlarge in the viewscreen she had a front row seat. The M class planet looked green as they approached having much smaller oceans then Earth.
Tearing her eyes away, she monitored the sensor readings. Ensign Osan sent a report showing that the east coast of the southern continent was experiencing a class 1 hurricane. As a sub note, with the smaller oceans, the storm would not have enough time to grow in strength. In fact, it was as strong a storm as this planet could experience. Based on this information, she changed the coordinates of Team 2.
Suddenly the ship was being hailed. The visage of an annoyed, but unsurprised Bolian welcomed them. The blue faced man had the classic middle aged, out of shape build of his species. The Lt. Commander had been surprised when informed that he was the Govenor. Bolians were the bankers of the Federation. Even the Ferengi used them. It only made sense if he were here to protect investors. It was all the more reason to take his assessment with a grain of salt.
As Savot gave the final orders, McLeod turned the science station over to Amana and headed to join her staff in the transporter bay. As she entered she saw that all were present. Some good natured banter had been going on, but her presence put a damper on it. McLeod was sorry that they felt that way but it was the price of being a senior officer.
Lts Barker and Belsin's body language gave away more then she thought they knew. Ainsleigh had no problems with officers fraternizing as long as it didn't effect their work. It had been complete coincidence that they had been assigned to the team checking out the northern continent.
The teams stepped one team at a time onto the pads and disappeared in the haze of the transporter. Hers was the last time to depart. As they materialized they found themselves surrounded by settlers. The mood seemed jovial as the crowd opened a path for the Govenor to enter the circle and formally welcome them.
As he made his speech Ainsleigh took a quick look at the town. Neatly laid out with dirt streets. Several of the prefad metal building had sidewalks and it looked like someone had made the effort to plant some greenery around making for a less harsh feeling.
Being from a frontier planet herself, Ainsleigh respected the amount of work they had accomplished in such a short time. She caught the Bolian reiterating that they should not go 'wandering' off. He seemed adament that they stay within the area of the colony. McLeod didn't inform him that she already had a team on the northern continent and another team 200 kilometers to their east here on the southern land mass.
As soon as the formal greetings were over Lt. Vasha showed her a tricorder reading.
"The biofilters will handle it, but notify medical," she told the woman unconcerned with the rhinovirus in the air.
*****************************************************************
Team 3 materialized on the southern tip of the northern continent. The smell of damp, rich soil and riotous plant growth greeted them. The marine with them hadn't said a word since joining them and he quickly scanned the area at alert.
"What do you think of the new Chief?" asked Lt. Gowalski. "I hear she is fresh out of the academy!".
"She seems nice enough," answered Lt. Belsin. "Must have done something, she's a Lt. Commander."
"I'm just saying," Gowalski continued as Lt. Barker cut him off.
"You just thought you were going to get Zimmerman's job," Barker joshed him. Changing the subject, "I could retire to somewhere like this. All this open space."
"Think again mister," Lt. Belsin countered. "I'm a city girl. Cement under my feet. Unlimited shopping. Mobs of people, ah the city. This place gives me the creeps." as she shooed away an insect.
They spread out taking readings and collecting several of the insect species for further analysis when a screech that no human ear was meant to hear split the air. The marine's rifle came up instantly and the four science officers grabbed for their phasors.
"What was that?" Lt. Belsin's strained voice asked.
"I don't know," replied Lt. Barker. "Where is it," he directed the question to the marine.
The man in the business voice of a trained warrior, "Across the valley," he indicated the direction with a nod of his head for emphasis.
Lt Gowalski took command, "Get your samples and stay close. I want out of here before that thing comes this way."
No one questioned his authority.
Under her breath, "and you want to retire here?" she rolled her eyes at Barker.

OOC: Sorry for the monster post, got a bit carried away... Kevin stepped off the shuttle to find the Bolian Governor, Hwek, standing impatiently in front of him. The acting first officer's eyes darted to the chief science officer barely visible in the distance, and a faint smile touched his lips. Hwek was already approaching him with clear intent to launch into protests and prolonged dialogue. "Hello, Governor," said Kevin, holding out his hand. "I'm Commander Zimmerman of the El Salvador. We're here to evaluate the terraforming of this planet." "So I see," replied the blue humanoid with more than a hint of irritation. "Your science department is already eager to leave the colony, but as I told them it isn't a good idea." Kevin raised an eyebrow - he had met more than enough Vulcans to replicate the look. "Really? Why is that?" "I- well, we hadn't even met you yet, and I would have appreciated you meeting me a little bit sooner, Commander." Hwek waved his hands at the colony. "As you can see, we're doing fine, and I don't think you need to go over every tract of land on the entire planet, especially before you've met with us." "My apologies, Governor," said Kevin with a slight bow. "Unfortunately, Commander McLeod will need to lead the science teams around the planet. We hardly have time to inspect every square centimeter, but we certainly will want to be sure that the terraforming has proceeded as planned. I expect we may be here for a few days. Do you have a spare building I could use as a sort of ground base?" "Of course." The Bolian was quick to show Kevin the way, any resentment at the science team's unexpected arrival hidden or gone. "It isn't large, but we have a spare housing unit. I assume only one or two of you will need to remain planetside during the night?" Kevin hesitated. "That's right. Well, I think we'll be getting to business as quickly as possible. Is there anything I need to be made aware of? Any unexpected trouble, equipment malfunctions, injured civilians?" "Ah... now there's something," replied Hwek, looking unhappy. "We've got a young woman who is upset. Her sister is going through serious surgery back on Earth, and if you have a counsellor..." "Certainly," replied Kevin. "I'll inform Commander Rylka as soon as possible. Anything else I should know?" "It should be in the report I last filed. I'll have a copy sent to you once you have settled in your temporary housing," promised Hwek. Minutes later, Kevin and the two officers he had brought with him, an engineer and the shuttle pilot, were busy moving equipment into the spare housing unit. Once they had completed the task, Kevin downloaded a list of the colonists' names onto a PADD. "Stay here and monitor the science teams' transmissions," ordered Kevin. "I'm not expecting anything exciting to happen, but if they find something they need transported up to the El Salv it could be easier to do it with a shuttle." Zimmerman tapped his commbadge. "Zimmerman to Rylka." (Rylka) "There is a young woman who requires your services, Commander. I believe she lives in the third northernmost structure. Her sister is in surgery on Earth." (Rylka/further Zimmerman if required) Once the conversation was completed, Kevin consulted the PADD. One of the colonists was a retired Starfleet Lieutenant. Kevin sought him out first, finding him at his home with a replicator strewn across the entryway to his house. "Lt. Jenkins?" asked Kevin, hopeful he would find a warm reception. "Just David Jenkins now," replied the engineer with a welcoming grin. "I guess you're Zimmerman? Come in, and I'll introduce you to my family." Unsure how Jenkins had known his name, Kevin stepped through the doorway and glanced around. In addition to the replicator, several tools, half a tricorder, and some spare parts were lying around the front of the house. Kevin stepped carefully through the debris. "You probably don't remember him, but my cousin served under you until about a year ago," said Jenkins as Kevin was brought to a large photograph of three. "He's in San Francisco now, helping out with the Academy. This," he pointed to the photo,"is right before we left for this colony. My wife, Clair, works as the secretary for Governor Hwek. My daughter, Haily, is in school right now - I'll need to pick her up in about half an hour. I'm in charge of any malfunctioning equipment. Most of the time I'm not to busy, but now I've got a bit of work piled up." "So I see," mused Kevin, studying the photo. "You're a little young to be retired, aren't you?" Jenkins sighed. "I decided the lifestyle wouldn't suit a family. It wasn't an easy choice, but Clair was insistent, and right, as always. I do enjoy it here, much more than I thought I would." "Are there any problems?" asked Kevin. "Hwek - that is, the Governor - seemed a little nervous that we were here, but I think it is just natural stress." The engineer frowned. "No, I think we're fine. There have been a few mishaps, but nothing our resident doctor hasn't been able to mend. A couple animals got loose and were never found, and one of the replicators was completely fried. Nothing serious." A chime went off. "Oh, its later than I thought," said Jenkins. "If you'd like, you can see our school. I'll be on my way right now." "That sounds great," replied Kevin, leading the way back to the front door. He paused suddenly, looking more closely at the replicator in the middle of a repair. "You're writing your own programs?" he asked. Jenkins looked embarrassed. "I, well... yes, but I make sure I have everything completely right before I try it. I'm taking the required precautions," he promised. "I could help review your programs later," offered Kevin. "That would be great," replied Jenkins, smiling. "To the school, then."

John began to sort his security teams out, there where to be four groups, considting of around 4 officers in each. Group 1 - Lt. Cmdr Roberts
- Lt. Scofield
- Ensign Carter
- Crewman Anders
Group 2 - Lt. Burrows
- Lt. Latham
- Crewman Chang
- Warrent officer Smith
John would lead group one, they where offering protection to Mcloed and the scientists, the other group would just be situated in the town center, watchin behaviours of the people, looking out, as Savot had requested, and criminal behaviour, or if every one acted as though they could be attacked, or robed at any moment. While out in the country side with Mcloed, John took the chance to get to know her a little better, and his security group didnt seem to have much to do any way so he wasnt having to bark orders at them every 5 minutes. "So" John said pausing, "Where you from?" he ended his sentence. (Mcloed) "Manchester, well, on the outskirts in a town called Bolton, I signed up to starfleet as there wasnt really much else to do, and kinda because my parents explored space, it was that love that killed them in the end, I suppose thats where I got it from, how about you, whats your story behind joining the fleet?" Looking over the reports of the other sections heads, to see who would be avaible for drills. He came across Roberts security reports and details, it seem a little to much in his book but it wasn't his assingment. To many people he thought might give the wrong idea that they didn't trust them. Oh well he wasn't the chief of security, he was and had his reasons.
Still he was happy to have a quite mission for a change and decided to head for the bridge. He had a couple of hours to kill before his drills, they were going to be night drills any way. He had found that they were the best for learning and the hardest to do. He never liked making anything easy when it came to training. He had long since learned more sweat in drills meant less blood in real world problems.
He arrived on the bridge to see that the crew was busy so he took a empty station. He was busy studding the planet trying to pick a place that would work for what he had planned. <Tag anybody>

Post by Savot on Jan 27, 2008 4:30:07 GMT
(Sorry for the lengthy absence, been a busy week. Post will be multi-staged leading up to the current time.)
*************************************************
Several Hours Prior:
Savot sat in the center seat as the El Salvador came out of warp within the Rhylan Caliopus star system. The crew went about confirming their position and plotting a course for orbit around the 3rd planet without any need of orders from the vulcan. After a brief cruise at impulse of about 23 minutes the mighty vessel settled into standard orbit.
His senior officers all at their posts, Savot ordered a channel open to the colony's subspace array, =^=Governor Hwek of the Federation Terraforming Colony: Rhylan Caliopus 3, this is Savot of Vulcan in command of the Federation starship El Salvador. We have been instructed to perform the annual evaluation for this project, please acknowledge.=^=
With little delay the visage of an annoyed, but unsurprised Bolian welcomed them as visual communications were initiated from the planet's surface, =^=This is Project Governor Hwek, El Salvador. We hadn't yet been scheduled for evaluation but we are of course at your disposal to assist your personnel in their efforts. Beam-down coordinates are being transmitted as well as areas sufficiently clear for shuttlecraft landing. At your convenience, Captain. Hwek out.=^= The hail was cut off without waiting for Savot's reply, though in truth no response was really necessary after the information they'd been given.
In truth, Savot was simultaneously: aware of the Bolian leader's clearly apparent irritation at their unannounced arrival, but also impressed at the governor's efficient attention to delay despite those feelings. Kevin, Roberts, Rylka and the newly promoted Mcleod headed for the turbolifts to proceed to the planet for their assignments, and Savot spun his chair slightly to face the departing quartet, "Commanders, exercise caution." As a matter of sheer coincidence the rank term was appropriate to address all four, and Kevin at least probably understood the underlying translation of the vulcan's words to mean, "Be careful", not solely with regard to the mission, but likewise for their well-being.
************************************************
One Hour After Arrival:
After receiving the initial check-in report from Commander Zimmerman to confirm they'd arrived and begun their work successfully Savot retired to the Ready Room for approximately half and hour to have something to eat while catching up and his personal communiques. Retrieving a plate of sliced gespar fruit, native to his home planet of vulcan whose taste is most often described as a mix between a Terran pineapple and the Rigellian kir: tangy and piquant, he called up his first message... and for the majority of the next 7.28 minutes ate his fruit wordlessly while holding his right eyebrow in a state of near-perpetual elevation.
Lieutenant Commander Chester Delbridge was an... interesting, human Savot had met during his tour of duty at the Propulsion Research Center on the surface of Jupiter. The vulcan had chosen reluctantly to take a sabbatical from starship assignment aboard the then-newly commissioned El Salvador B, and return to his earlier job specialization of engine design and test pilotage. Before being found and recovered by the El Salvador A shortly a few months prior to her destruction, Savot had been trapped in the colloquially known Mirror Universe for over 7 years. While the majority of this universe was unchanged on the whole, Savot had still found it prudent to take time to study the history he'd missed in order to fully re-integrate himself into his rightful place of existence.
Mr. Delbridge was the officer responsible for breaking into the vulcan's quarters at the research station and leaving him a goldfish as a memento of the occasion. That same goldfish, Alfred, now resided in Savot's quarters here aboard ship, but even with that incident to look back on Savot was no less... unprepared for the nature of the message his old 'friend' had sent.
Savot had worked with Delbridge often at the research station and knew the human to have a respectable intellect when he chose to apply it, but as he both watched and listened to the contents of the message the vulcan found it difficult to believe that "Night Fever", a song by a 20th century Earth music group called the Bee Gees, was an appropriate musical accompaniment to a documentary on the mating practices of nocturnal species...
Reaching the end of the message with an inward sense of relief, Savot then headed back onto the bridge.
************************************************
2 Hours Later:
Savot lay on the deck of the bridge, his upper torso wedged into the inner workings of one of the workstations along the walls of the bridge, Ethan Hope kneeling nearby and occasionally handing the vulcan Commander a tool or looking up at the workstation's readouts to confirm or refute the success of the vulcan's 'tweaking', when Colonel Wolf returned to the bridge and sat down at the adjacent station to scan the planet for potential drill-holding locations for his men.
Sliding out from under the console he was altering to enter configuration changes from the workstation itself, the vulcan noticed the Marine's arrival and nodded cordially to the Colonel, "Greetings Colonel. Mr. Hope and I are reconfiguring this station to serve as a Bridge link to Main Engineering. It is my hope that it will not only provide an increase in Bridge-Engineering liason efficiency but also provide a valid workspace for our new Acting Ensign Westfield on occasion. Serving shifts on the Bridge will expose her to invaluable first-person observations of starship procedure."
The vulcan worked some of the controls before nodded slightly in satisfaction that the first stage of interlinks had been successfully initiated before he continued speaking, "I had given thought to specializing a station for yourself as well, Mr. Wolf. In the event the El Salvador is ever again boarded by insurgents there is a high probability we will also be combatting another vessel. Under such circumstances Mr. Roberts' attention would be focussed at tactical while you would need a detailed readout of intruder locations to prepare your counter-offensive. Thus far I've only included a more-detailed variant of the security computer that would give more specific readouts of intruder positions and have a tighter control over the initiation of security force fields."
Lowering himself back to the floor Savot returned to the innards of what would be the Engineering station when the conversions had been completed. He continued to speak from within the circuitry's innards, "I welcome any suggestions you might have on what capabilities to include in such a workstation's capabilities. Subject to my approval you're also welcome to participate in the conversion if you feel you have sufficient technical and programming experience."

As they walked along the outshirts of the colony, McLeod continued to take readings and to monitor readings coming in from her teams.
"So" John said pausing, "Where you from?" he ended his sentence.
McLeod responded, "Donegal, Sineal Bith," seeing the by now expected momentary look showing that the questioner was unfamiliar with her homeworld. "Its a frontier planet," Ainsleigh added to clarify.
Roberts went on to tell her where he was from and what brought him to Starfleet. When the normal inquiry about her reasons for joining came about, "Adventure," came her glib reply.
How would you get into the real reasons? That she was being stiffled. The agrarian nature of her home and the quaint notions that had been the founding mission statement of the colony had made women into second class citizens. Oh, they were valuable, but for their strategic marriages, ability to produce children and take care of the homestead. She would have to know someone alot more to open up about her past.
=/\=Commander McLeod, here are the initial atmosphere readings.=/\= came the voice of Ensign Amana.
McLeod scanned them and saw a slightly elevated oxygen reading, but well within normal parameters. The oxygen and CO2 levels would oscillate for generations before they reached equilibrium.
Adding John into the conversation, "Prelims look good, though I would question some of their decisions. I guess that is not our concern," she added with a laugh, "only the science of whether this world is viable."
As they finished up their circuit of the area, "John, I had a disturbing report from my team on the northern continent about wildlife. Just a suggestion, but I wouldn't conduct drills there," and Ainsleigh gave him a knowing look.

Looking down at Captain Savot and listening " I would be grateful for that sir, it could prove useful. I would hope that I will never have a need for it but you are right. One can never tell what might happen its a big universe out there. I would maybe suggest a tracking of command codes as well. Not a way to see what they are anything like that, just a way to see who used there codes. This way its a fall back in case someone is forced to do something. In the past it has helped clear some people of things they were charged with. Every officer has a letter or number assigned to them. It might not tell me who exactly but it would tell me what section."
As he waited for the Commander Answer, " Sir a question if I may, we are faceing a turning point in the federation. Most of the conflict is over what is the real fate of ships like ours. I ask to I might know the logical answer to what the future might hold for us"

John gave her a concerned look, John wasn't sure what she could mean. "What kind of disturbing report?" John asked.
Ainsleigh hestitated for a moment. Word had finally reached her about John's fate after the Zimmerman rescue. Being a new officer and senior at that, she wasn't in the grapevine and he had already served his punishment be the time the news had gotten around to her. Feeling responsible for that situation, McLeod didn't want to jump the gun with another problem.
Roberts gave her that "Well," look prompting Ainsleigh to continue. "My team on the northern continent heard some bellowing that caused them and the marine with them to cut their exploration short."
She paused, not sure how much to say,"We have been running," and here Ainsleigh gave another hestitation, choosing her words carefully, "extensive scans". It had been her intention to bring this to the Captain.
"Scientifically all our information shows that this is a viable planet and the terraforming is continueing well within parameters. " She stopped walking and turned to the Tactical Officer, making a decision, "Scientically its fine, politically I'm not so sure. I'm curious why their are Gorn on the planet."
After dropping that bombshell, "I'm curious why a Bolian is in charge and whose interests is he really protecting." All her concerns tumbled out and none of them had anything to do with her department or orders.
Her experience in the academy then those with Lt, Victoria had taught her to look behind the scenes. It seemed more black and white when the Federation was fighting known enemies. Now as the Federation changed to deal with peace it seemed she had more enemies all fighting for power.
