This seemed a little out of order, but ohn was the sme as herin many way, he went with whathe thought all too often, finding it only to be wrong. He took a quick look around, "We will have to go through proper channels, maning we talk to Savot about it when we return, after that, its his choice"
John then rembered that she mentioned the transmission was cut short, "Is the northern continent team outthere?" John asked.
(McLoed)
"Was there any reason for it to be cut short?" John then asked, before asking another straight away, "Have you tried contacting them since?"
(Mcloed)
"I will contact them, whos in charge of that away team?"

"No, the team transported back to the El Salvador," Ainsleigh answered. "They didn't see the Gorn, but did hear them and saw tracks."
Realizing that Roberts was right about them reporting to Savot, "You're right, let's go see the Captain." She really wanted to go take a look, but wisdom prevailed.
Tapping her commbadge, =/\=Two to beam up=/\=
In moments the pair was shrouded in light as they were transported to the ship. Hopping off the pad, Ainsleigh set off at a trot to the bridge.
As the doors opened they revealed the Captain and Lt. Colonel, just the two they needed to see. Walking up to them, Ainsleigh saw that they noticed them, so she waited to be acknowledged.

Colonel Wolf stood nearby looking down at Savot and listening "I would be grateful for that sir, it could prove useful. I would hope that I will never have a need for it but you are right. One can never tell what might happen its a big universe out there. I would maybe suggest a tracking of command codes as well. Not a way to see what they are anything like that, just a way to see who used there codes. This way its a fall back in case someone is forced to do something. In the past it has helped clear some people of things they were charged with. Every officer has a letter or number assigned to them. It might not tell me who exactly but it would tell me what section."
Savot responded while still within the workings of the console circuitry, having already plotted out the progression of the work with Ethan the Ops Chief was ready with each new tool without having to be told which to provide, "Indeed I am familiar with some cases in which falsely accused persons were exonerated by such data. We will consider it as a potential step in the future; over the next few missions we undertake we'll observe whether it might be beneficial to implement such a system."
For the next inquiry the Marine waited until Savot had once again exumed himself from the console so he could pose it face to face, "Sir a question if I may, we are facing a turning point in the federation. Most of the conflict is over what is the real fate of ships like ours? I ask so I might know the logical answer to what the future might hold for us."
Commander Savot noted the potency of the Colonel's question, and held a thoughtful countenance as he clasped his hands behind his back to reply, "That is a difficult question to answer Mr. Wolf. As I believe Ambassador Spock is once creditted with saying, 'History is replete with turning points'. When the Federation made its alliance with the Klingon Empire there was still the known threat of the Romulans to be concerned with. When a stalemate of sorts had been reached with the Romulans the Dominion War then took center stage. An end to all conflict is not impossible, per se, but such a concept does unfortunately fall within the realm of 'highly improbable'."
The vulcan tilted his head slightly as he continued, "Although our list of known enemies grows shorter as we embrace peace, so too does our knowledge of the universe and our ability to explore it increase. The Borg were inconceivable as an opponent before the Enterprise-D was forced into contact with them. In our view of the universe at that time we would never have expected to encounter lifeforms of their kind. I suspect that as we continue to expand to explore farther, traverse time and dimension, that conflict will continue to erupt, at least significantly into our forseeable futures, despite our best efforts to avoid it."
"However, even were Universal Peace to be achieved this very day I would not concern yourself with the fate of combat-readied vessels and personnel such as yourself. It is the belief of many, including myself, that the mere presence of those who would uphold laws and defend the exploited and abused, helps decrease the overall number of such violations occuring. I myself value the vulcan tenets of pacifism and non-violence, but I prepared myself to combat those who would take advantage of such thinking in others; when conflict cannot be avoided I take satisfaction in facing it so that others do not have to. However, we must always attempt non-violent resolutions."
"Regardless of when, if, or where the next prolonged conflict takes place I believe Starfleet will continue to find it sensible to have a sizeable force capable of defending Federation principles. Were the El Salvador to be decommisioned from her current design your training and experience would simply be assigned elsewhere to continue 'fighting the good fight' as it were."
Savot gave the Colonel a small nod of respect as he made his last statements, "Your willingness to examine a logical assessment is commendable, though I must admit logic is not always the defining factor in a situation. Those even more mathematically talented than myself could predict via statistical probability what course the future is likely to take for the Federation, but such predictions do not always come to pass, particularly the more variables are added in. If I recall correctly it was believed to be more advantageous, on paper, for Earth's own United States of America in the mid-20th century not to participate in either of, but most definitely not the second of the World Wars against the members of the 'Axis'. And while it is impossible to know what exactly would have happened otherwise, I believe most Terrans are thankful that it unfolded as it did. Strictly 'by the numbers', staying out of the conflict may have been the most logical choice, but logic is only one of many tools we must use to temper and mold our judgements. I myself have utilized pure instinct on occasion when I had insufficient facts to make a solely logical conclusion."
As the last words flowed from Savot's mouth Roberts and Mcleod entered the bridge via turbolift and approached the vulcan and the marine. "Commanders", he said as he nodded in acknowledgement, "is something wrong?"
(Mcleod/Roberts, either or both)
The vulcan eyebrow elevated at the apparent discovery, "Gorn on the surface... intriguing. Commander Mcleod, assist Colonel Wolf in attempting to pinpoint the Gorn on sensors, as well as watch for any other unexpected visitors. Mr. Hope, coordinate with Mr. Roberts to scan for signs of any nearby vessel that might have deposited our mystery guest; check for signs of cloak or any decaying engine dispursions not originating from the El Salvador. Unless the Gorn takes hostile actions no one is to confront it."
Walking to his chair Savot opened a communication to Kevin, =^= Commander Zimmerman, when you have a moment; this is the Bridge.=^= Shortly thereafter the FO responded to the summons, and Savot proceeded to fill him in on the detection of the Gorn, =^= I want you to ask Governor Hwek if they've had any contact with visitors are been harassed by unauthorized personnel. Have Commander Rylka present if at all possible. We will update you further if our investigations bear further fruit, Savot out.=^=

Listening to Commander Savots thoughts and thankful that he was really taking the time to address them. What he was saying was making sense no matter how much he wished for peace, chances were it would always be short lived.
" Thank you for your insight Commander it was most enlighting, I agree that logic can't answer everything. I have found that it can be useful in life, to take a moment and think about the problem logical. By figureing out what a enemy might do and then adapting to do the oppsite and proven a life savor quite a few times. I will try and not think about the fate of your ship. Logic would dictate that even if we are slated to be decommisioned that it would be quite a while before it took place. As you have stated the last few conflicts we have been in have take a toll on the fleet. It would take some time for Starfleet to build ships to replace us if thats there plan."
" Your knowledge of earth history is quite impressive Captain, I would differ with you on your quote from Mr. Spock. I would beleave that he was trying to give us insight on how to change our history instead of repeating it. Weather we are smart enought to listen is a question that needs to be answered. I would also hope that what ever out fate is that I would be lucky enought to stay under your command, even if to borrow a quote from Doctor Mcoy if its a board a garbage scow"
Just then he saw Roberts and Mcleod appear on the bridge and report the findings. He listend with great interst to there findings and was a little shocked to hear them.

John allowedMcloed to speak, on the account she knew better than him. Savot responed in the usual cool way a he had come to expect of the Vulcan. John listened to his orders, and heaed to his console. John and Ethan began to search for any near by Gorn vessels.
"Ethan, could you try and boost the sensors?" John asked.
There was a near by nebula, which sensors where barely penertrating, it would be a perfect place for any ship to hide, and he knew the Gorn would exploit anything they could. Even though the nebula would also interfer with shield harmonics, making them also useful until outside the nebula.

=^= Commander Zimmerman, when you have a moment; this is the Bridge.=^=
Kevin put some more distance between himself and the school he was watching before he tapped his badge. "Zimmerman here."
=^= I want you to ask Governor Hwek if they've had any contact with visitors are been harassed by unauthorized personnel. Have Commander Rylka present if at all possible. We will update you further if our investigations bear further fruit, Savot out.=^=
The young officer frowned. Gorn? On a colony planet? It didn't make much sense. Kevin had never seen any Gorn (besides the holovids at the Academy), and didn't remember very much about them. His thoughts soon drifted as a large group of children fled the school, many yelling and shouting in excitement. Several children were slower to leave, walking slowly. Most were buried in the civilian version of a PADD.
"Haily," called Jenkins. Kevin noticed one of the quieter children pick up speed as she raced over to her father. She began to eagerly explain something she had learned to her father, who listened patiently. Kevin smiled at first, but his grin quickly faded. He had been about Haily's age when his parents had died.
Kevin approached Jenkins once his daughter had finished speaking. "I've got to go check on our progress," said Kevin. "If it isn't a bother, I'd like to speak with you again tomorrow, when you have more time. We could also review your replicator programs then."
"That sounds great," replied Jenkins, looking down at his daughter. "Haily, this is Commander Zimmerman." The girl was silent. Her mouth was closed, and she looked up at Kevin in a nervous way. Kevin found this amusing, as he had never imagined himself to be a very frightening person.
"Hello, Haily," said Kevin. He didn't bother offering his hand - she was currently clutching her homework to her chest protectively. "I'll be working with your dad tomorrow."
"I heard you," replied the girl, annoyed.
Kevin's face flushed slightly. He had misjudged Haily's age due to her short stature. "Yeah... well, I've got to run, so take care."
Once he had returned to the temporary headquarters he inquired as to the whereabouts of Governor Hwek. Kevin then contacted Commander Rylka and informed her of the upcoming meeting. It took a few minutes for Kevin to find the Bolian, but the Governor seemed in an unusually good mood. Rylka appeared moments later
"Ah, good day, Commanders," said the blue-skinned man. "How is your assignment proceeding?"
"Everything's been fine so far," Kevin responded. "I just have a few questions. Have you had any visitors to the colony?"
"It should all be in the reports," replied Hwek. "A couple of merchant ships arrived, but most colonists here are not wealthy enough to afford much luxury."
Kevin nodded. "Understandable. None of these ships stayed for any vast length of time, did they?"
"Oh, no," laughed the Governor. "Neither stayed more than one day."

Acting Ensign Westfield growled at the shuttle's mutilated hull. "How did this thing get so banged up?"
"You're asking this question?" asked one of the other engineers as he tapped a tricorder carefully, slowly scanning the exterior. "Look, entering and exiting the atmosphere of a planet is not easy on spacecraft. And in space, there are plenty of-"
Westfield's glare shut the man up quickly. She returned her attention to the damaged hull. "Are we going to use that... whatever it was you called it?"
"Yes," affirmed the third engineer, handing her the tool in question. "Use it slowly, on the third setting."
Taking a calming breath, Westfield activated the tool, slowly moving it over the pocketted hull. The metal seemed to bubble before settling into a slightly more asthetic look. It looked bad to Kaitlyn, but neither of the other engineers said anything. After almost five minutes she had finished. It was clear that the hull had been fixed somewhat, but it was much better than it had been.
"That wasn't too bad for your first time," commented the third engineer. "Here, I'll give you a few tips. When you're holding the tool, move your wrist slightly in a circular pattern..."

After Savot acknowledged their presence, Ainsleigh spoke up with what her team had found.
"Sir, so far all our tests have come back showing that the terraforming is continueing well within normal parameters. I'm a bit concerned about the mixing of foliage from different environments, but that should not effect the viability of the planet."
Now she got to the real reason that the two had come to him, "Sir, our team on the northern continent found that there are Gorn present. " Going on with the details, "The Gorn are unaware of our presence and we believe that at least three individuals are planetside. It could be more, they are using some sort of cloaking devise to hide their camp."
Handing the Captain her PADD with all the scans they'd done so far. The readings showed that the Gorn would disappear when entering a specific area that McLeod had identified as their camp.
She hoped that Roberts could get more detail with his sensor readings. She was optimistic that would be the case since they now knew what they were looking for.
She was secretly relieved to no longer be responsible for this information. It was now the Captain's responsibility.

John was scaning the surface, "McLoed, is this the correct area for the 'camp'?" He said gesturing to a spot on the map.
Ainsleigh walked over from her console, "It is" she said.
"Theres an increase in Tachyon emmisions there" Ethan repllied moments after.
"Sir, permission to fire a low yield phaser burst at this point" John asked Savot, to which the Vulcan took a few minutes to ponder.
(Savot)
During this time, John thought him self, and expected an answer to be no, on the account we wouldnt want to cause any hostilities with the Gorn, on the other hand, they had no right to be on the planet, it was a tough call to make.

"Sir, permission to fire a low yield phaser burst at this point" John asked Savot, to which the Vulcan took a few moments to ponder.
Coming to a response the vulcan began shaking his head slightly, "We'll take no offensive action just yet. Though they are trespassing on a Federation world we don't know why they've done so; I'd like to gather more information before direct confrontation. You mentioned a nebula nearby did you not Mr. Roberts?"
The security chief nodded and brought an image of it up on screen. Savot narrowed his eyes slightly as he thought on the matter for several seconds then spoke up, "Colonel Wolf, maintain strict observation of the Gorn camp on the surface, I want to know where the Gorn go on their excursions outside the cloaking field."
He turned to Roberts and Mcleod as he continued, "Commanders, I want you to launch a probe along the outer edges of the nebula; we need to know if the Gorn have any vessels or equipment hidden within. Alter the probe's transceiver so it transmits a Federation cargo vessel's signature. If there is a Gorn vessel within they likely cannot detect us just as we cannot detect them, but as the probe nears the nebula I am interested to see what their actions against a cargo ship would be."
Not wanting to interrupt any discussions Kevin might be having on the surface and arouse suspicion, Savot entered a textual update informing him that they'd discover a cloaking field, its approximated size at this time, and the coordinates, as well as a note to exercise caution and be alert should the Gorn decide to 'make contact'. When the message was complete he sent it via tightbeam to Kevin's tricorder where he could read it at his convenience.

Looking at Commander Savot " Understood sir I will have a scout team follow and stay out of sight." Something about this whole thing just didn't make sense first Gorn then a cloaking field. It wasn't like the Gorn to use cloaks they were up front shootem up kind of people. There ships were designed more for fire power and shields the cloak.
Looking over at Commander Savot " Sir may I also suggest a probe be launched around the planet as well. I beleave What Mcloud and Roberst are saying it just doesn't add up. We may not know alot about the gorn but, They never have spent alot of time developing cloaks. They have always been the heavy cruise with alot of fire power type. Not one federation report has ever detected a cloaked Gorn its not how do I say Manly enough for them. I'm just thinking it might not hurt to make sure we aren't be fooled by anybody. Its a long way for the gorn to travel there are closer words"
He contacted his team and odered them to stand by in the transporter room. " Captian Savot I will beam down and keep watch. I will swing my commander Zimmerman and report privately to me on the current problem." he still waited to see if the captain would give his idea a shot. A probe could be explained away quite easyly to the locals a just routine.

As Mcloed and John got to work modifying the probe, Wolf said something, "I concour captain, but, the chance of a ship being in orbit and not knowing of our presence is extremely slim" John said.
(Wolf, Savot)
"Im not exactly the best at stuff like this" John wispered to Ainsleigh, he was allowing his mind to wander, she was quite attractinve, John suddenly shook his head to get him out of the momentary trance, just in time to catch what Ainsleigh was saying.

"Here," Ainsleigh said as she finished working on the probe. "This will read as a Bolian cargo ship just in case they are aware that the planet's Govenor is Bolian." McLeod was certain that anyone watching this newly terraformed planet would have intercepted transmissions detailing this.
She too found the idea of the Gorn cloaking an outpost of theirs odd, but there were alot of odd things happening in the Federation since peace had broken out. She smiled to herself at the mental image of peace breaking out.
Turning to Roberts as they started to work on the probe that would orbit the planet, "This one doesn't need to be altered to look like a cargo ship's." After finishing, "Think engineering needs to take a look?", she asked Roberts not really believing that engineering needed to.
=/\=Lt. Commander McLeod, here are the prelims on the water.=/\= Ensign Amana sent the information to the bridge's science console.
Taking a quick scan, Ainsleigh saw nothing jump out as unusual. Saving the reports, she'd read them in detail later.
Before Wolf left Ainsleigh spoke up, "Sir, I'd like to add a science officer to your team." She could see be his face he didn't really want to 'babysit' a 'civilian' while it what could be a hostile situation, but he could understand the necessity.
Hitting her commbadge, =/\=Lt. Gowalski report to the transporter with full gear for recon to the northern continent.=/\=
Lt. Gowalski was a strapping young man that looked more like a marine then a botanist. McLeod had chosen him because his personnel file indicated he could take care of himself and had a keen mind and was capable of thinking outside the box.
After having heard the bellow of the unseen Gorn on their first trip to the continent, he was both excited and nervous. Quickly he gathered up his field kit and strapped on a phasor and headed out at a run.
The doors opened and he saw that Colonel Wolf's people were already there and waiting. The Lt. nodded at them and took his place ready for whatever was about to happen. Thnking to himself that if all went well, all they'd find were a couple of new species of plants.
McLeod and Roberts launched the probes and the pair took their respective places on the bridge and started to monitor the initial readings.

John watched the probe paitently, nothing occured for a while, the minutes passed, and the probe continued to circle the planet and nebula alternatively. John thought for a moment, the Gorn would wish to cause a comfrontation with us, if they had detected the El Sal, or had seen right through the ploy.
Just then, a vessel began emurging from the nebula, but it wasnt Gorn, or if it was, it was a new class of vessel. John looked towards Mcloed, she didnt recognise it, he did the same with wolf, he also just shruged his shoulders.
There was a tense atmoshpere to the bridge. Thoughts passed through John's mind freely, only one seemed to make sense, a slave ship, possibly the Gorn slaves where the only usefull ones for the task in which was their intent. Although, it may have been a simple pivateer trade ship.

Minutes ticked by as the two probes launched. The one orbiting the planet showed nothing unusual. Ainsleigh didn't expect it to as she thought they'd have detected anything when they scanned the area upon arrival.
As the other approached the nebula, McLeod continued to watch. The probe disappeared into the nebula, but continued to transmit at first while still on the perimeter. Soon enough the transmission became fainter.
Ainsleigh was sure it was still collecting information and spoke to Roberts, "We may have to have the probe oscillate between here and the nebula to get its readings."
Just then a ship revealed itself. Pulling the long range sensors up, she put the image on the viewscreen. A quick run of her fingers over the console started a comparision with known ship designs both of the Federation and outside. She didn't recognize the conformation of the vessel and watched as image after image flicked past.
"We have company," Ainsleigh spoke up. "I detect no powering up of weapons. They have not tried to probe us."

Johns fingers flew from button to button trying to work out the origin of the vessel, he wasnt having any luck.
"I still dont know the origin of the ship, but it seems oblivious to us" John said, alarmed.
The probe still hadnt left the nebula, and there was a fait area of burnt gas within the nebula, just before sensors where unable to penertrate any further, John relayed the readings to Mcloed for analysis, she comfirmed there had been weapon fire, and it wasnt Gorn weaponary that had been used.
John began to monitor the camp on the surface, by now the activity had increasded, and several Gorn came out from the camp, and where transported else where, he assumed it was on the vessel. While this took place, Ethan who had been watching closely too, relayed it back to the bridge crew.

Beaming down to the planet seemed like the best idea. Although he wasn't happy with Mcloud assigning a science memeber to his detail. They approached the terra formers base and he went looking for Commander Zimmerman to let him know what going on. He found the commander and got his attention for a private talk.
" Commander Zimmerman I thought it best to talk to you directly, and quitely dont want to alarm anybody just yet. Mcloud and Roberts found a hidden Gorn base. Its cloaked and didn't show up. Chances are nobody knows about it, I'm on my way there now to check it out. I dont think there's much to worry about if they wanted to attack they would have done it by now. Just wanted to inform you and keep you updated I will check in with you after I get there"
He had finished his talk with the commander and gathered his team up. They headed for the location and arrived about a hour later. They had made good time even with there tag along, who seemed alittle worse for the wear.
They concealed them selves and talked about a course of action, when one of Gorn left the cloaked base. Looking at the rest of his team they had the same conclusion this was not a invasion he wasn't armed. Getting up from his position he walked over to the startled Gorn. " I'm colonel Wolf from the U.S.S El Salvador you are along ways from home for that matter from your sector of space."
The shock Gorn looked at him and started talking " We mean no harm we are just studying your terra forming " Looking at the Gorn " I kind of guessed the no harm part you could have killed them a long time ago, but your still going to need to talk to my captain about this.'"
The Gorn looked back at him " I understand"
" Good I will contact my ship and see if the captain will join us." Tapping his combadge
" Captain Savot this is wolf if you have a few moments there is a Gorn down hear who would like to talk to you. Your security detail will be on hand if things are not what they seem to be. There have been no hostile threats of any kind I do beleave these Gorn are peaceful they seem more like sciencetist if you ask me." <Tag Savot>

=/\=Captain Savot, our probe has flushed a ship from the nebula. It is of a unknown configuration. No hostile action has been shown. Hailing them now.=/\= Lt. Commander McLeod notified the Captain on the planet's surface.
"Open a hailing frequency," she ordered the communications officer. Aside to Roberts, "we need to know what their intentions are."
In moments the viewscreen shifted to show the bridge of the unknown vessel. The obvious leader was flanked by two Gorn officers. Ainsleigh was a cryptobiologist and she was unfamiliar with the ship's Captain's species.
Thinking to herself that this was a first contact and how woefully inadequate she felt, "Greetings, this is Lt. Commander McLeod, science officer of the Federation vessel El Salvador. "
Her mind was racing wanting to say that they were trespassing and just as quickly deciding that word could hold hostile connotations. "You have entered Federation space. Can we be of assistance?"
Their Captain responded in a harsh, rasping voice and in a language that their translators didn't work on. Instinctively, Ainsleigh knew that he had done it on purpose to make a point. He had understood her and obviously the Gorn aboard could have replied.
Roberts was keeping close watch and continued to let Ainsleigh know that the alien vessel had not powered any weapons. As long as they showed no hostile actions, McLeod was not going to provoke them by bringing up shields or powering their weapons.
She had stalled as long as possible hoping to see the Captain come through the doors, "send my message in Gorn," she ordered the communications officer.
As the message repeated itself their leader showed no emotion. The Gorn on his right stiffened slightly. There was a moment that seemed to go on forever as the alien held her in an unblinking stare.
Sensing that he honored courage, McLeod returned his look with an unflinching steadiness that she didn't feel. Never removing his eyes from her, the alien Captain spoke to the Gorn on his left and almost immediately his reply was repeated in Gorn.
Even as the ship's translators converted it she could hear the arrogance, "I will speak with your Captain," then a minute pause, "science officer.". He continued to stare her down, but Ainsleigh was to well trained to show any reaction to his intended insult.
"The Captain has been notified of your presence," McLeod responded with no emotion in her voice. Continuing in her best business tone, "Captain Savot will contact you shortly".
She was about to cut off the transmission when the doors to the bridge opened. Not wanting to break eye contact with the other ship's Captain she could only hope it was Savot...

"If you'll excuse for a moment," said Kevin, standing and leaving Commander Rylka with the Governor. He exited the building and flipped open his tricorder as he walked outside. Savot's message was brief, yet served to increase Kevin's suspicion of Governor Hwek. Leaving Rylka alone with the Governor - after all, the longer Kevin took the greater the chance Rylka would learn of anything amiss, if there was anything to learn - Kevin returned to the temporary HQ and sat down at the portable personal viewer.
The Gorn were not a significant force, and as Kevin browsed through Starfleet records he discovered that the Federation had held an unofficial peace with the Gorn for many years. It made sense, considering the relative power of both parties. Two things became immediately clear as Kevin studied the historical relationship between the Federation and the Gorn. It was abundantly clear that simple economics had resulted in a poorer Gorn society and a richer Federation. The Gorn were well above the poverty level as a species, of course, but they certainly lacked the luxuries many members of the Federation enjoyed. Secondly, the Gorn lagged far behind even the Klingons in technological advances. Most of their scientists were, according to the intelligence report available to Kevin, working only on weapons, shields, and ship design. All other areas, such as replicators, communications, transporters, engines, agriculture, and medicine had been neglected.
Comfortable with a slightly better knowledge of the Gorn, Kevin made to return to his meeting with Governor Hwek and Commander Rylka. He was intercepted by Wolf. "Commander Zimmerman I thought it best to talk to you directly, and quitely dont want to alarm anybody just yet. Mcloud and Roberts found a hidden Gorn base. Its cloaked and didn't show up. Chances are nobody knows about it, I'm on my way there now to check it out. I dont think there's much to worry about if they wanted to attack they would have done it by now. Just wanted to inform you and keep you updated I will check in with you after I get there"
"All right," replied Kevin. "It makes sense for them to have a planetary base, if they have been here for an extended period of time. I don't need to tell you not to initiate conflict. My meeting with the Governor shouldn't take much longer, and then I'll join you if possible."

(OOC Note for Everyone: Please progress as though I never left the ship. With Kevin already down on the surface and a potentially hostile conflict with another vessel likely there's really no way for me to justify beaming down too. This post will start backpost-esque and bring us forward to the current time, and will hopefully make sense to everyone.)
**********************************************
Savot sat at his station awaiting telemetry from the pair of probes they had launched. He doubted they would detect a vessel in orbit with them, but Wolf's suggestion to cover the planet with an additional probe was a sound one as it would allow them a constant image of more of the planet surface than their sensors alone. Just then a ship revealed itself. Pulling the long range sensors up, Mcleod put the image on the viewscreen.
"I still dont know the origin of the ship, but it seems oblivious to us" John said, alarmed.
The probe still hadn't left the nebula, and there was a faint area of burnt gas within the nebula, just before sensors were unable to penetrate any further, John relayed the readings to Mcleod for analysis, she comfirmed there had been weapon fire, and it wasn't Gorn weaponry that had been used.
The vulcan found that report a bit intriguing, and he continued to watch the approaching vessel. The nebula was a good distance away so even though they could now see the 'intruder', at their current speed it would be several minutes before they were in weapons range of each other. As his internal thought process continued Savot was presented with a computer notification of incoming messages from both Starfleet Command and Colonel Wolf down on the surface.
Rising from his seat Savot spoke out to his bridge crew as he headed for the Ready Room, "I'll only be a moment. Inform me immediately of any change in the intruder's posture."
As the doors whooshed closed behind him the vulcan quickly got down to business as time was of the essence. As he pulled up the notice from Starfleet he simultaneously tapped his commbadge to open the channel to Wolf, =^=Proceed with your report, Colonel.=^=
The Marine's voice came through the ship's communication system while Savot read the official notice from Starfleet Command... regarding the confirmation of his command of the El Salvador and promotion to Captain. =^= Captain Savot this is wolf if you have a few moments there is a Gorn down here who would like to talk to you. Your security detail will be on hand if things are not what they seem to be. There have been no hostile threats of any kind I do believe these Gorn are peaceful they seem more like scientists if you ask me.=^= The immediacy of the current situation blissfully denied the vulcan the time required to dwell on the fact that the last proverbial nail had been driven into the captaincy of his friend, Deis Irae.
Without conscious thought the vulcan moved about the Ready Room while he replied to Wolf, =^= Understood, Colonel Wolf. We have a vessel on approach therefore I cannot join you but as Commander Zimmerman is updated as to the situation he will take charge when he's finished speaking with Governor Hwek.=^=
His single black pip he set on the desk next to his computer console as he spoke, =^=Establish a perimeter around the encampment and politely detain our guests until we've established contact with what I presume is their support craft.=^=
The replicator wordlessly obeyed the order to create a lone gold ranking pip, and just as wordlessly Savot lifted it to his collar to fasten it in place. Indeed, it was about time he returned to the bridge to deal with the Gorn's... support ship... Realization impacted the vulcan's mind like a quantum torpedo and all distractions were put aside as he strode quickly back to his desk to type orders down to Engineering while he continued to instruct Wolf, =^= Colonel, I'm sending down transport-inhibiter units which you are to deploy immediately upon receiving. Do not harm the Gorn but ensure that they and their equipment remain within the inhibitor field. I will contact you with further instructions within 30 minutes, Savot out.=^=
Finishing his orders to Engineering, Savot's console erupted anew with an update report from Mcleod who, knowing he had left the bridge for an incoming communication, had the polite forethought to transmit it textually rather than verbally, =^=Captain Savot, the configuration of the ship our probe flushed from the nebula is still unknown. No hostile action has been shown, but they've increased speed and are moments from entering orbit. Hailing them now.=^=
The vulcan hoped his intuition had been fast enough to prevent what he thought the ship was planning to try, but only time would tell so there was no logic in dwelling on the matter further. Rising from his desk Savot walked back out onto the bridge in the midst of Commander Mcleod staring down the opposing captain. With what he'd been told by Wolf about their alleged terraforming interests and seeing for himself the being that seemed to command the Gorn, but on a ship not of Gorn origin... a theory formed in his mind that he mulled over internally as he began the interplay.
Savot calmly but purposefully walked to his chair and sat down. Then, looking the other captain in the face as it turned its gaze from the El Sal's science chief, the vulcan spoke, "I am Captain Savot of the starship El Salvador. You are trespassing in Federation space. If there is perchance a navigational malfunction to blame we are prepared to assist you with repairs." He left that diplomatic little out for them but if he'd been quick enough the Gorns' leader would soon be too upset to take it.
Moments of uncomfortable silence followed for the intruding vessel as their leader apparently waited for something. Then in an instance the false calm disintegrated as the intruders' bridge became awash with frantic activity and guttural exclamations in Gorn from the crew to the captain. Although the voices were overlapping too much for the universal translator to cope with, Savot believed he knew the cause of their irritation. "I presume you find yourself unable to retrieve your personnel trespassing on the planet below. You have my assurance as both a Starfleet Officer and a vulcan that they will not be harmed in any way and I am prepared to return them to you in exchange for an explanation as to your breach of our space. The Gorn aided us during the Dominion War and that aid benefitted both forces. If you will agree to meet with me aboard my vessel to discuss your situation perhaps we can again establish a mutually-beneficial arrangement."
Savot's face retained its vulcan calm as the crew and captain of the other vessel thought and spoke among themselves. The gestures and tone of some seemed explosively against working with the Federation ship in front of them, while others appeared to grudgingly admit the potential boon. Finally, the commander seemed to come to a decision as his Gorn second stepped forward and replied, "We will speak, Federation. One hour. 3 guards."
Savot gave a tilted nod of his head, "The guards will not be necessary; however, you are welcome to bring them. We will speak again in one hour, El Salvador out."
The bridge crew looked a bit taken aback at the prospect of this unidentifiable being and his/its? Gorn thugs coming aboard, but they all knew it was the safest way to conduct talks. One person spoke up in curiosity, "Captain, do you know what's going on? Who or what is that and why does he have Gorn crew serving him?"
Savot turned his chair to face the speaker, "Though I cannot be certain until detailed scans can be taken, I believe the Gorn follow the unknown leader because it is a Gorn. Though if my theory holds it would be at least centuries old, if not millenia..."
(Tag Anyone. If anybody on the bridge wants to be the one who asked that last question, feel free to state such in your next post. I just left it 'One person' so as not to put words in anyone's mouth that might be contradictory to their char's personality)

"Captain, do you know what's going on? Who or what is that and why does he have Gorn crew serving him?" John asked, a little unsure of wether he had just done the right thing by doin so.
Savot turned his chair to face the speaker, "Though I cannot be certain until detailed scans can be taken, I believe the Gorn follow the unknown leader because it is a Gorn. Though if my theory holds it would be at least centuries old, if not millenia..."
"He doesnt seem reptillian at all, no scales upon his skin, not even a tale of any kind" John said, a little confussed. John got back to monitoring the unidetified vessel, checking is engines, make sure it wasnt about to leave us high and dry, and its weapon systems, to make sure they werent about to try thier luck in batle.

Listening to the captain explain what was going on " Understood sir I will remain on station and await commander Zimmerman"
Looking back at the Gorn "it would seem that our first officer will have to do for the moment. Could I get you to please drop the cloak as a sign of good faith. After all if there is no intention to harm then you wont mind showing us your base"
The Gorn touched a control on his arm and the base decloaked she wan't big. From what he could make out most of it was labs running scans no weapons in sight.
Tapping his combadge again " Commander Zimmerman" not wanting to say to much " Sir if you could spare a few moments My team and I would like to go over some of the drills with you. One of my team mebers has a idea and really would like to talk to you about as soon as possible Sir"

"Though I cannot be certain until detailed scans can be taken, I believe the Gorn follow the unknown leader because it is a Gorn. Though if my theory holds it would be at least centuries old, if not millenia..." Savot had postilated.
Ainsleigh was taken aback but didn't allow it to show. Immediately she began a comparision study of the creature and the Gorn. His image turned into a three dimensional holographic picture and beside it one of the Gorn taken from Federation files. As they turned and twisted, the computer silently ran scans, measurements, studied the size of the brain case, size of skeletal musclature.
If the Captain was correct, the creatures features and smooth skin could be the result of age. "Captain, McLeod thought in one of those tangent ideas that shot through her mind, "Savot had Captain's pips." Turning in her chair to check she got a view of the Captain's back. Allowing the thought to return to her subconscious, Ainsleigh returned her attention to the matter at hand.
The computer beeped softly to let her know it had finished the assigned task. Indeed the two species had a common ancestor, but the leader was more evolved. That would bring up a host of new questions. Did Gorn evolve as they aged or had the race devolved? If they evolved with age, why did the Gorn not have the benefit of the advanced technology? Could it be that they had separate cultures or had they migrated and become two distinct groups?
Her computer couldn't answer these questions for her, she'd just report what would be pertinant to the Captain's upcoming meeting.
"Captain, the two evolved from the same species. Their Captain has a larger brain pan and their change in research ideology indicates higher intelligence."
Anymore information would be mere speculation without more input and she didn't think Savot would appreciate it. She reminded herself he was a Vulcan and had no doubt already thought of the questions she had.
"Their cloaking devise has been shut off," she reported the planet's Gorn encampment's change to no one in particular.

=^=Commander Zimmerman, sir if you could spare a few moments My team and I would like to go over some of the drills with you. One of my team mebers has a idea and really would like to talk to you about as soon as possible Sir. =^=
Kevin frowned, not entirely understanding what Wolf meant. He tapped his commbadge slowly. "I'll be there soon. I'm already in the shuttlecraft." He nodded to the pilot, who took off and began to fly toward Wolf's position. "Hold tight. Zimmerman out."
The acting first officer arrived less than a minute later. Kevin was surprised to see a relatively calm scenario - everything he had read concerning the Gorn had warned against a much less helpful possibility. "Hi," he said unprofessionally to the Gorn standing nearby. "I'm Commander Zimmerman."
"We were only watching your terraforming," stated the Gorn.
Kevin guessed his size did not intimidate the Gorn, which was probably a good thing. The one speaking seemed slightly anxious. "That's... that's not a huge problem, though Starfleet would appreciate not having another interstellar power investigating its scientific advancements. I'm sure we can work around any political problems, though. Would you care to give us a tour of your... base of operations?"
The Gorn nodded and began to march toward the base. Kevin dropped back to Wolf's position. "What's happened so far?" he asked.
(Wolf)
"I'll take it under advisement," promised Kevin. "We want to keep any relationship between the Gorn and the colony minor. Not only have the Gorn unintentionally created a situation what a less stable government could declare an act of war, but they have been monitoring sensitive technology that shouldn't be in the hands of such a minor power. Keep everyone calm, no matter how intimidating some of the Gorn may be, and tell me if you sense anything out of place. I don't expect to find any problems here, because these Gorn seem rather passive, but I don't have your background or experience."
(Wolf)

Listening to the xo and thinking for a moment. " So far sir I would say everything is going well for a first contact mission. Only exception is they are on a planet way out of there system and aren't know for peaceful science partys"
" So far they have answered all our questions but share your concerns about technology. I dont know whats up but there have been no weapson detected right now. Doesn't mean they dont have them they weren't suppose to have cloaks either. My team will keep a close watch and keep them contained to this sector. I still would like to know why there here why now. Whats so importan to risk a war just to study. I'm wondering if something is going on, on there home world thats causing this"

Three hours after the Gorn leader's scheduled arrival, the meeting between he and Savot finally reached a conclusion satisfactory to both parties. The Gorn had beamed back to their vessel, awaiting clearance to retrieve their personnel from the planet's surface.
The vulcan captain returned to the bridge to fill the crew in on the reasoning behind the strange situation they'd found themselves in. Taking his seat Savot opened a channel to Kevin on the surface, =^=Bridge to Zimmerman. I have reached an accord with the Gorn commander; we're allowing the team on the surface to return to their vessel with the memory units from their equipment. In exchange for this data and our forgoing criminal charges for trespassing, they are to leave the equipment itself for Starfleet study. Given the low probability that they would use anything but their most sophisticated equipment for a matter of such critical importance to them, I found this arrangement acceptable. Organize the Gorn into groups for transport then catalogue the equipment and tag it for retrieval. A science vessel is on its way to our position to take posession, ETA 37.4 hours. There should be sufficient time after the Gorns' departure to complete our evaluation of the colony. Savot out.=^=
Savot then looked toward Mcleod, giving her a nod of congratulations, "Your scans proved correct, Commander. The unidentified being is indeed an evolutionary descendant of what we know as the Gorn. Their emphasis on research was due in part to the extended brain pan you detected but was also based on a much more immediate need. Unwilling to divulge any more data than necessary I did not get a precise figure on the duration of the stasis, but the Gorn commander is one of thousands that at least 5 centuries ago achieved a state in their genetic development that allowed them to successfully form and enter a form of chrysalis."
"Much like a cocoon houses a caterpillar during its transition to a butterfly, this protected shell housed those Gorn who were capable of undergoing the transformation as they evolved toward a new level of being", Savot steepled his hands beneath his chin propping his elbows on his chair arms as he continued what he found to be a fascinating situation. "As you noted, this form is intellectually superior to the Gorn we've encountered, but there was an additional unexpected effect. The new form cannot survive in the type of planetary environment that Gorn planets currently consist of. According to the commander over 50 of the evolved species died before the cause could be determined."
"When they discovered the problem they worked to halt the awakening of the others as much as possible without harming the lifeforms within, but were understandably concerned as to how they would combat this problem", Savot brought up a schematic of the intruding ship on one half of the main viewscreen, "Just as their planets' environments couldn't sustain the new lifeform so too were their life support systems unable to generate the necessary properties, and they were forced to use a vessel from another species with which they had established trade. The weapons fire we detected was an attempt on their part to disrupt the nebula's energy currents in order to avoid being detected by our sensors when they saw us arrive."
"Their actions were irrefutably illegal and they were aware of this but their need was so dire that they were unwilling to take the chance the Federation would deny their request to study our terraforming techniques, so they established a base on this planet away from the colonists in order to learn how they could go about altering the environments of their planets safely to the specifications needed by their new forms, but without making them uninhabitable by the conventional Gorn biology", Savot narrowed his eyes in interest at the vessel in their screen as he finished his remarks, "If they are successful we will likely see a very different Gorn Empire than previously dealt with. We shall have to hope that our act of cooperation here today dissuades them from challening us upon regaining their stability, or if that fails, that the technology we've confiscated will grant us a formidable defense."
