::Deis ends up standing before a console looking over this girls entire system. Its an unknown species...at least heretofor. Theyre similar to humans in the manner that a vulcan or romulan is similar to humans...she only looks like one. Kalen steps up to the plate as well and the two of them confer. It takes them over two hours but at the end of it Deis says in half annoyance, half astonishment:: Are we sayin...shes 'as a cold??
::Kalen nods to her and points to the information:: Yes, a simple common cold...though it seems her physiology isnt made to resist it...at all. You can read this stuff as well as I, you tell me.
::Deis nods to the man and has to agree with him:: Bloodcount...electrolytes...congestion...the headaches from th medical records. Tis a cold. But Kalen..its workin like cancer. How d' we make it stop?
::Kalen nods:: yes that "is" the question isnt it.
::Deis sighs:: Lets get t work then.
::And so they do, running synthesis and extrapolation based on the medical data given to her by Commander Savot. Its easy to slid into this sort of work but theres always the worry in the back of her mind that shes going to miss something. She has no way of knowing thats perfectly normal. During the time between the briefing and now, shes managed to turn on a comm...and the realization that its official has threatened to distract her. So she focuses in on the medicine for the moment...she hasnt even told anyone else...all that ceremonial claptrap can come later. Though really...word does get around::
~Bridge~ Everything seems quiet for the better part of half a day. Long range scanners would pick up what appears to be a small probe...no ships with it. Just a probe...but it heads inexorably towards Darvons coordinates, slowly. The sensors chime out alerting those who monitor them. Word really "does" get around.
OFF: more to come on this...but feel free.

Kedzie left Starbase Conqueror, and piloted a shuttle to the ship that was to be her home, the El Salvador. As she neared the Darvon system, she received an alert that said no one was allowed to enter or leave the Darvon system.
Kedzie thought quickly, hoping that people were still allowed to join the El Salvador, since she didn’t have any intentions of going to the planet, she just wanted to go to the ship. And she didn’t want to stay in the shuttle much longer. “This is the Federation shuttle Chantrea to the USS El Salvador, Civilian Shikako Kedzie, requesting permission to dock with the El Salvador,” she said over the comm as she approached the ship.
“What is your reason for docking?” the response came.
“I’m going to live on the El Salvador. I requested permission a while ago and said that I would receive quarters, it should be in the official records,” Kedzie said, and while she waited for the reply she began to worry. She had been assured that the permission had been granted. Although she took the pause of silence as a good thing, since it probably meant that the person on the other side of the comm link was checking the records, and would hopefully reply soon. She was normally a patient person, but she was eager to get settled in, and she didn’t want to have to go back to Starbase Conqueror.

Jamey was sitting at the CONN, with the ship in a geo-stationed orbit, there wasn’t much to do but keep an eye on the tactical sensor network. Jamey noticed a shuttle approaching the system and sent a notice to the shuttle warning of the restriction of approach to the system. Noticing the shuttle not altering its course, he opened a channel and asked for identification and purpose … the reply came back as … “This is the Federation shuttle Chantrea to the USS El Salvador, Civilian Shikako Kedzie, requesting permission to dock with the El Salvador,”Jamey responded, “What is your reason for docking?”“I’m going to live on the El Salvador. I requested permission a while ago and said that I would receive quarters, it should be in the official records,” Kedzie said. Jamey acknowledged her and also ran the identification of the shuttle through the computer. Checking with the last transmission from Starfleet and also notifying the CO, Deis Irae, Jamey responded to Kedzie. “El Sal to Chantrea … I see your orders; however I need you to transmit your authorization code and place your shuttle in a holding pattern until it can be scanned by our sensors. We are currently in a guarded mission here and we need to confirm that your shuttle doesn’t contain any surveillance equipment that you may not be aware of.” Jamey said across a channel to the shuttle. Kedzie responded back and sent her authorization and also piloted her shuttle into a hold pattern. Zimmerman scanned the shuttle and found nothing that was out of the normal. “El Sal to Chantrea … You are clear to dock, please be advised that a security team will meet you after you dock, nothing serious … just protocol. Welcome to the El Sal Kedzie, I look forward to meeting you … Lt. JameyParker out.”With that, the shuttle entered the bay. OFF ... Welcome to the El Sal !!! good to have you here

Kedzie acknowledged the response, and docked. She was a little nervous, she hadn’t expected to be greeted by security, but she merely nodded at them when they arrived. She wasn’t sure what their purpose was, but that would be Starfleet protocol. Nor was she sure how exactly to react, so she waited to see what the security personnel did.
“Hello,” she introduced herself to them. “I’m Shikako Kedzie, I’m a civilian, as was stated. What do you need me to do?” she asked them, uncertain if she should step out of the shuttle and let them go in and scan it, or whether they had already done everything they needed to do using the El Salvador’s scanners.

NPC for the security officers …
As the shuttle landed, the Bajoran female stepped into the doorway of the shuttle and said, “Hello, I’m Shikako Kedzie, I’m a civilian, as was stated. What do you need me to do?”
“Hello,” a young Earth male security officer said back to her, “Let me be the first to welcome you aboard the USS El Salvador.” Walking up to her and talking under his breath, “don’t worry about all this, the ship is just in a protected mode right now and everyone is a bit on edge. Your welcome to step down and I have a PADD here showing you a map to your quarters; I believe that the Captain will want to meet you soon, but until then feel free to walk about the unrestricted areas of the ship..” The officer asked Kedzie for her hand print for security reasons and also to program her COMM badge for the ship. She took the badge and placed it on her shirt, smiling at the officer.
Kedzie felt better about this now and took the PADD form the officer, thanked him and walked out of the shuttle bay … looking down at the moving arrow on the read-out. She noticed a note on the PADD as well … it read, “I hope the officers didn’t scare you. I made this map for you to easily find your quarters. I hope to be able to meet you soon in the common room for drinks maybe … and to formally welcome you on-board. The crew is really busy now and on the behalf of everyone, I’m sorry that we couldn’t greet you better. The Captain should be meeting you soon; she is in sick bay right now working on an issue. If the CMO requests to see you for a check up I also have mapped that for you as well. Welcome aboard again!” The note was signed Lt. JameyParker CNO

Savot watched silently as Lt. Parker directed the shuttle onboard, but the entire time his eyebrow was raised in curiousity. Yes, the clearance from command had checked out, but why in the first place would Starfleet grant clearance for a single civilian to reside onboard a starship of such obviously military purpose? Savot took the brief interlude between security checking and docking to access her public dossier, and could see no specific reason this Shikako Kedzie had been placed on the El Salvador, even for her own sake, as there were indeed no other civilians onboard, and as such her only contacts would be with off-duty Starfleet personnel, and her access to the ship would be significantly limited. However, if the decision had come down from command, it was not Savot's job to argue it, but to accomodate it.
Watching Parker voluntarily leap to attending to details, Savot spoke to him as the security team's report came through to his console, "Mr. Parker. As you have already adopted the duty of conducting our civilian aboard, and as we are holding our position for the foreseeable future, I am placing you on partial duty until otherwise noted. You are free to take whatever recuperative measures you wish, but first see to it that Miss Shikako is settled into her appropriate quarters personally, and answer any questions she may have. We will summon you if your pilotting skills are required." Savot nodded, dismissing the Lieutenant to a partial vacation from the bridge for the next few hours, or however long things remained quiet.
Jamey turned, looking partially surprised but all in all the logic made sense, and he couldn't argue with an order anyway, so he nodded politely in acknowledgement and stepped into the turbolift to help acclimate the new arrival.
As a temporary nav officer moved into Parker's station, both Zimmerman and Savot's consoles beeped at the presence of an incoming probe, and just as quickly both officers bent to perform scans. "Commander Savot, we've got a probe incoming on the outskirts of the system. It's on a relative heading toward us, but it's taking its time about it. At this range we're unable to tell whose it is."
Savot looked at his console, performed a few calibrations and enabled a course projection, then nodded satisfactorily, "At our present orbit compared to its current trajectory, at its closest pass to the planetship we will have moved almost perfectly between them. Continue scanning as we get closer, tactical stand by on weapons if it starts to head for the planet. We cannot allow detailed knowledge of the planetvessel to fall into unpredictable hands at this point in time."
As Kevin nodded and hovered over his sensor readings, Savot tapped his commbadge =^= Savot to Irae. As Lt. Parker has already informed you we have indeed taken on the incoming civilian, Shikako Kedzie, and she is being assigned quarters as we speak. Mr. Parker has already seen to assigning her a commbadge so she should be reachable should you desire a personal interview. I am transmitting her personnel file to the main sickbay computer at this time, though it gives little insight as to the purpose of her presence. I surmise she will have to inform us of that on her own when we have the opportunity to speak with her. Mr. Zimmerman and I are currently monitoring an incoming probe, though it offers no immediate threat at this time. Should it come within detailed scanning range of the planetship, I felt it prudent to take preventive measures by destroying the probe. We are standing by for further orders should you have a change. =^=
Savot then rose from the center seat, knowing he could perform his overseeing duties just as well from Ops, and from there he too could scan the incoming probe, and await whatever medical news Deis and Kalen had come up with...

Riding the turbo lift down from the bridge, Jamey was in a state of perplexed thought. ‘Why did Commander Savot give him partial duty?’ It almost seemed as Savot wanted him off the bridge for some reason. Jamey noticed the consoles before he left the bridge and knew at a glance it was notifying of a incoming probe. This all seemed very strange to him … ‘buy hey’, Jamey thought, ‘who am I to question a Commander.’ With a smirk on his face, remembering the days of piloting his own cargo ship, Jamey stepped off the lift and walked towards the common area to see what was new on the menu.
On his way to get something to eat, Jamey tapped his COMM badge and said, [glow=blue,2,300]=^=[/glow] “Lt. JameyParker toShikako Kedzie, I am on my way to the Common area; if you would like, I could give you a tour of the ship?” Ending the message by tapping his badge, he smiled at several crew members walking the corridors with him.

Kedzie looked at the note on the PADD and read it carefully, smiling as she did so. She picked up her bag of stuff, and began to walk toward her quarters, feeling rather conspicuous in her civilian clothing. Still, she shrugged, she was sure that the experience would be worth a little unease.
After she walked to her quarters, she deposited her bag on the floor, and took a quick sonic shower and changed clothes. Kedzie uneasily transferred her commbadge to her shirt, and glanced at it, puzzled. She wasn’t quite sure why she needed one, and she didn’t like the way it made her feel that she would have to respond to it. She sighed, she supposed that it couldn’t be helped. Although she didn’t like the thing, she could understand that she might have to contacted, and that since she was on a Starfleet ship, she may as well not be difficult. The commbadge having been put on her shirt, she was unsure what she should do next, so she decided to take a walk, and explore some of the ship. She slowly headed towards the common room, wondering if JameyParker would be able to get there yet, but she realized that she could no doubt talk with other people.
As she walked there, her commbadge beeped, and she stared at in in annoyance. “Lt. JameyParker to Shikako Kedzie, I am on my way to the Common area; if you would like, I could give you a tour of the ship?” the message came through.
“That would be fine, I’ll meet you in the common area,” she answered, then tapped her commbadge, daring it to come through with another message. Since it didn’t, she quickened her pace to the common area, since she now knew that JameyParker would be there, and she didn’t want to make him wait, since he undoubtedly had important duties to get back to.

Jamey had made it to the Common Room, really wanting to call it 10-forward, but didn’t know what the other crew members called it because he himself hadn’t been around long either. That is why, he guessed, he wanted to make this new person on-board feel welcomed … he hadn’t had many people do that with him when he came on-board. Sitting down at the table nearest to the ports, viewing the planet as the point the ship was orbiting above passed into darkness, he gave a big sigh. Looking around he saw other off duty crew enjoying games, food and drinks; one group was playing some type of card game. He ordered an Earth drink from the Southern part of the North American content called, sweet tea with mint. Even though he was a Trill in every way … right down to being joined, his father was from Earth and he enjoyed more Earth food than Trill. Jamey liked this room, it was large, plenty enough space for people to spread out but still be together. The bar was on the far side of the room, on the opposite side of the door, and the port windows were to the left. On the right side of the room, there was a stage and a large screen, Jamey thought this was were movies were shown and plays were held. Also, in the corner next to the bar was a mini-arboretum with a small but impressive waterfall. The large double doors swooshed opened, and in walked a Bajoran Female in civilian cloths. Jamey thought, ‘ this must be Kedzie’. Jamey got up and walked to her as she was looking around the room. “ Hello,” Jamey said with a smile, “ My name is JameyParker.” Hopping not to be too forward he said, “ You must be Shikako Kedzie.” … TAG Kedzie ... your turn

“Hello,” Jamey said with a smile, as Kedzie entered the common area. “My name is JameyParker.” Hopping not to be too forward he said, “You must be Shikako Kedzie.”
“Yes, I am.” She smiled. “Please, call me Kedzie.”
“Would you like something to drink?” Jamey asked, gesturing at his own cup of…tea, Kedzie decided it was.
“Sure,” Kedzie responded, then went to get it herself. She decided on a hot chocolate, extra chocolaty with a little raspberry flavoring. She had found that so many people thought that hot chocolate was basically just supposed to be hot water, which was very unpleasant. To be sure, Kedzie would have preferred to have the warm drink with a variety of spices, but she thought that even just listing them would take too long, and many of them weren’t exactly easy to replicate. So with her fairly plain hot chocolate in her hand, she returned to Jamey. “Thanks for meeting me here,” she said. “But I don’t want to be a bother. If you have duties that you have to return to, I don’t want to be in your way,” she continued. “But if not, I would be interested in that tour of the ship you mentioned.”

“No … no problem … in fact I have just been put on partial duty until further notice … so … I have all the time we need.” Jamey said trying to still look like this didn’t bother him. “I haven’t eaten anything yet and was about to get something, would you like to eat? Before joining Starfleet, I was a cargo pilot in the DS9 region and fell in love with Tuwaly pie. I also loved Spring Wine … I loved kava juice for that matter.” Smiling as he rememberd the person who introduced him to kava juice. “But we may need to start with something a bit spicy … how about some Hasperat souffle?” Hoping she wanted to eat before the tour Jamey added, “… or I could just grab a hot dog if your not hungry.” Jamey wonderd if she knew what that was … or even what Earth baseball was … he smiled at her and wonderd if he was talking to much.

::The world below orbit turns slowly, its day being quite a long one in the normal measure of things. The surface appears calm, and completly empty, the thousands of old colonists asleep in their alcoves now. Deep within the bowels of the monsterously titanic centercity, there is near complete dark...save for the low glow of life support alcoves. The hours tick away while the people above work towards a solution. As each one ticks off, an old nearly unpowered relay ticks over with it. slowly reviving what is known as "Secondary Protocol". Within a hangar inside, the reddish lights of huge machines begin to glow as they power up...the room that theyre held in, shielded, and scan protected against intrusion...this being a backup plan never once brought into play...but always kept, just in case::
~El Salvador~
::Deis stands listening to the comms as Savot gives her the business. Kalen sits with his eyes glued to the smallish screen of the synthesis machinery. The neck of her uniform is pulled open, revealing the greyish black underside...as one does when theyre up to their elbows in it::
::Deis had seen the name but in all the hurrah she had completly forgotten we were getting another "crew" member. She opens the file immediatly when Savot sends it to her, answering back with a tap on her commbadge:: Says 'ere she be a musician...::her tone ever so slightly bewildered but accepting nonetheless...she hasnt gone far enough in her career to question an order, nor would she over such a thing as this. She decides to set up an interview once this is all done with, or at least calmer. She wonders what sort of music she plays...but her attention is drawn back when the badge chirps in her hand having been open to her thoughts...luckily those wernt broadcast:: =/\=Unfortunatly it gives lil insight but tha be arrigh. Ill speak wi' her once we finish th darvon "serum" ::saying it all dramatically with a hint of a tired sigh:: Spot on bout th probe...i was expectin sommat like this. Keep me informed Commander=/\=
:: The probe in question begins broadcasting once into the closer ranges, its heading straight for us rather than straight for Darvon, even to following our orbit. Flashings of protocol appear on Savots screen including a message::
=/\=Federation starships enroute, standby do not engage.=/\=
~~~ :: Deis looks over as Kalen says:: Done Captain...now we just have to try it out.
:: She nods and then walks over to one of the biobeds, prepping it for the arrival of "the girl". Her fingers dial up the appropriate life support systems and even makes sure to treat for immediate shock...that girl hasnt been out of that alcove in quite a long time. Kalen heads to the replicator and takes out a slightly enlarged specialized hypospray. He hands it over and Deis puts it in place on the biobed, set in the direct center of the chest. She hits the switch powering up the bed and then steps back, hitting her commbadge:: =/\=Transporter room one, Mr. Perkad please beam one, from these incommin coordinates straight into sickbay, biobed 4=/\=
::sending the coordinates and then waiting:: =/\=Aye Captain=/\=.
::Before their eyes there fades in the smallish pale female from a species heretofor unknown fades into existance inside the biobed that promptly seals around her. As soon as it happens Kalen steps up to the bed and begins monitoring the girls lifesigns. Strange though they are they remain consistant and she dosent seem to go into shock upon being moved. Deis nods to Kalen when he says:: Lifesupport maintained. ready for the serum Doc
::Deis smiles a bit at the name and then puts her hands up on the biobed, swinging the modified hypospray down and then clicking it into place over the girls chest. Deis sends a little prayer before she hits the button that hisses loudly, a half frozen steam ejecting from the hypos other side as the bluish serum is injected massively into the small body, laying there. Afterwards she lets out a breath she didnt know she was holding and then looks at Kalen:: We should be knowin in a few minutes.
~inside Darvon~ The quietly ticking and powering up relays recieve a hefty jolt when that particular alcove changes its readings to indicate nothing. Remote scanners come online, the Secondary protocol speeding up enormously with the absence of "Captain". Three large bulky robotic shapes lift from their docking clamps and the lights in the scan shielded hangar begins to glow. Slowly and with a hugely loud creaking sound that noone hears, large cargo bay type doors open up and the ships begins floating outward towards the burst lake entrance, scanning the damage. Outward scans reveal the location of "captain" to be aboard an orbiting vessel above::
As several tense but otherwise boring hours of routine starship tedium pass by, Savot and Zimmerman maintain active scanning of the planetship and the incoming probe as the ship's orbit inches it ever closer to it.
Savot, upon receiving the transmission from the incoming probe, immediately leans over his console to verify the incoming transponder codes. Zimmerman, likewise, performs a more detailed scan of the probe itself as they orbit closer. "Origin verified, Commander. The probe is Federation in origin."
"Thank you Mr. Zimmerman, verifying security codes at this time", the vulcan taps in his commands into his Ops console, still not having resumed the center seat, and checks the codes against the Starfleet database. In mere seconds the reply comes forth, "Codes verified, incoming vessels confirmed as Starfleet ships Trispen and Pytalus."
Savot opens a hailing channel through the probe, =^= Incoming ships, this is Commander Savot of the U.S.S. El Salvador. Starfleet codes confirmed, we are standing by for your in-system entry. Please enter the following formation for protection of the object in question, I will inform Captain Irae of your presence."
Both Kevin and Savot's consoles then begin beeping as power fluctuations begin within the planetship, though they try and scan valiantly, both officers' attempts are thwarted at the moment by some sort of inhibiter field that lies in place. As the ship is already at Yellow alert Savot makes no change in that status, but taps his commbadge for Lt. Parker. =^= Lieutenant Parker, this is Commander Savot. We are receiving abnormal power fluctuation readings from the planetship, your presence is required on the bridge. =^=
The vulcan then sent a message to Deis informing her of both the incoming Starfleet ships, and the odd readings coming from the planetship, but he knew she would be busy at the moment with the ancient female child.
“Hasperat souffle sounds fine,” Kedzie responded. “I am sort of hungry, so there’s no need to grab a hot dog,” Kedzie hurriedly assured him, not sure what a hot dog was, but it sounded rather unpleasant.
After they have gotten the food, they started to eat it, and Kedzie tasted the spices in it. She remembered how, before she had left on the Academy mission, Fenel had given Yarna spicy cookies. Fortunately Kedzie reacted to spices far better than the three-year old had.
As they started to eat, Kedzie saw him glancing at her. “I bet you’re wondering why I, a civilian, am on a Starfleet vessel, but I can’t really say for sure. I guess it’s the opportunity to see new things, have adventures, from a different perspective than I might otherwise. As to why Starfleet let me on, I think it might be good for the crew, for them to get a different way of looking at things. Although I’m really not sure,” she admitted.
Jamey looked up from his plate with a gleam in his eye and a crooked smile and said back to Kedzie, “Wondering why … yes … but I could guess why you wanted to be here … the prospect of what will be around the next corner … so to speak. I think we all have that in us … most people on a star ship have that trait. I wanted to have the opportunity to become more than just an cargo pilot. Don’t get me wrong, it was VERY exciting and full of its own opportunities. But, I wanted to be a part of something bigger than myself.” Jamey stopped there, looking into her eyes, he saw what must have been in his eyes his first day of his first assignment.
Jamey continued, “Kedzie, tell me, if you don’t mind, about your home world. I have flown tons of cargo around that system and have talked to many Bajorans, but I only got the chance to visit once. What is Bajor really like?”
Kedzie and Jamey had finished their tour of the ship and Jamey had just dropped her off at her quarters; they both felt like they had been friends for a long time. ‘Sometimes’, Jamey thought, ‘you just meet people who you have known forever … but they simply wasn’t around until now.’ As Jamey was going to go back to his quarters to practice piano, the COMM sounded …
=^= Lieutenant Parker, this is Commander Savot. We are receiving abnormal power fluctuation readings from the planetship, your presence is required on the bridge. =^=
=^= Acknowledged Commander=^= Jamey responded. Jamey thought to himself that this seemed about right, just when you thought you had time to get back to music, you really didn't. Jamey walked to the nearest turbo lift, stepped on, and called out his destination, “bridge”.
The lift gave its usual hum as it made its way to the bridge. Jamey wondered what the atmosphere would be like when the doors opened. Would there be the normal activity, or would their be people running around reacting to some menace attacking the ship. However, he didn’t have long to think much about this before the doors opened and he would know.
Sitting down behind the CONN, tapping a few commands in the panel, he saw the power fluctuations from below and immediately overlaid the tactical display over the navigational. He wondered how long it would take for the Commander to disengage the power transfer that would allow him to move the ship out of harms way if that was what was ordered. “Commander, the CONN is ready sir,” Jamey said while turning to look at Savot.
OFF: Forgive the oversight Parker, the power transfer would've been shut down long before now. We've been here for hours and we only needed to keep it going long enough for them to stabilize. I'll be sure to post every detail in the future.
“Commander, the CONN is ready sir,” Jamey said while turning to look at Savot.
Savot, sitting right beside Parker at Ops, nodded without taking his eyes off of his own console. "Very well, Lieutenant. Break orbit and come to the following coordinates relative to the planet surface. We will be forming a triangulatory pattern surrounding the planetship with the assistance of the incoming Starfleet vessels. You will find them entering extreme range of your navigational sensors at this time."
Savot then turned slightly to face Zimmerman at the science station, "Mr. Zimmerman, intensify scans through the opening from which we egressed in the tertiary hull."
Savot then leaned back from his console to tap his commbadge and signal Deis once more, =^= Savot to Irae. We are breaking orbit and entering formation around the vessel with the 2 incoming Federation ships. Sensors continue to read power fluctuations though we are beginning to receive individual power readings from within the vessel, rather than a singular buildup. Assuming defensive posture. =^=
Savot then sat at his station, attempting to aid Kevin's scans and brought up the main viewscreen so all on the bridge would have a look at what was occuring, focussing on the former lakebed which was now a gaping hole in the planetship's surface...
"Very well, Lieutenant. Break orbit and come to the following coordinates relative to the planet surface. We will be forming a triangulated pattern surrounding the planet ship with the assistance of the incoming Starfleet vessels. You will find them entering extreme range of your navigational sensors at this time." Savot said
“Understood, Commander.” Jamey replied. Jamey broke orbit by moving away from the planet. “I see the other ship now and are coordinating the triangulation and forming the defensive posture; moving to coordinates now.” Jamey moved the ship to the coordinates given by Savot. The other two ships came into their positions and Jamey linked into their nav sensors as well. Now they had a complete view of the space all around the planet, tactical had the same. They were ready as they were ever going to be for whatever the planet had in store for them. Somehow he knew it was going to be a rough ride.
Savot was as cool as he always seemed to be. Zimmerman was busy working over his console and wasn’t showing much emotion. Jamey wondered if everyone else had the same feeling in their stomach as he, should a Starfleet officer have those feelings. Even on the academy ship he felt the same feelings, they never interfered with this duties, heck, they even seemed to help him have better control. Still, he wondered if they would ever go away, or would he just get accustomed to them. He wished he hadn’t eaten that spicy food earlier; it wasn’t settling well with him now. As he looked up at the view screen, he still didn’t like the fact that the CONN was sunken down in a hole. It wasn’t like he could change it however … he just hopped the next refit would have a different bridge layout. With his hands ready on the helm, he waited … just like everybody else.
“It depends what part of Bajor you visit,” Kedzie answered, taking another bite of food. “For example, the fire caves may look fairly…exotic, but I don’t exactly want to visit them. Besides, no one is allowed to go to them anymore. Something about it being stupid beyond belief.” Kedzie shrugged. “The official injunction reads somewhat differently,” she explained, with a slight laugh.
“I grew up in the Kendra Province, and the mountains there are amazing. It also has very good farmland, so, if you climb a mountain, you can look down and see fields of greens, each one a different shade. When I was little, I used to climb one of the mountains, the smallest one, with my sister, and try to guess whose field was whose. The brightest were the mostly the ones along the river, although there were a couple of fields in the middle that got watered a lot. And some people didn’t water their plants at all, and their fields were very brown. And the stuff they grew didn’t taste very good,” Kedzie admitted, laughing.
Suddenly embarrassed by her continual talking, Kedzie glanced at her plate, surprised to see that she had eaten everything. She glanced at Jamey, and he too seemed to be finished eating. “If you want, we could continue talking while you show me the ship?” she suggested hopefully, she really did want to get a tour, it would help her to know her way around.
“Then, maybe I could try to actually answer your question, since I gave you more of a personal story than a description of Bajor,” Kedzie said.
Kedzie was talking about her home and Jamey saw her eyes sparkle; she seemed to understand he loved to hear people talk about their life. Jamey wanted to know more, but she stopped short when she looked down at her plate. Jamey noticed it too, the plate was empty, and she had this look of surprise on her face. Jamey wondered why that was but he thought nothing more about it and heard her say, “If you want, we could continue talking while you show me the ship?”
“Ok,” Jamey said, “But you do understand that there are places on the ship you are not allowed to go? The Captain will fill you in on the complete details but I can tell you some of the restricted places”
<tag Kedzie>
“I will tell you what is on each part of the ship so you will know … it will be important, I think, should we run into trouble and you need to get to another part of the ship. Well, deck one has the Main Bridge along with some science labs and a transporter room. Deck two has more labs, a cargo bay or two and junior officer quarters. Deck three has tons of ships systems and a gym. I believe you will be able to go to that gym, it is right off the main turbo lift but the rest of that deck would be off limits.” Looking at how she would take the ‘off limits’ comment he really didn’t see any reaction. He wondered how she would take to life aboard an attack cruiser where civilians were not really commonplace; at any rate he continued.
Jamey talked about deck four but there wasn’t any place on that deck she could go either, so he went on to deck five where they went first. As the turbo lift stopped they both walked onto deck 5, “I wanted you to see the Holodeck 2, mainly because this is the one I use for my baseball games and for my pilot courses I have to keep up with. I thought we could meet here from time-to-time and I could let you watch a game or two with me … if you would like.” Jamey waited for her response but noticed that she was finding ways to change the subject; he didn’t know why … so … he decided to move on with the tour.
“Deck 7 is where your quarters are, and as you know, were the general lounge is … there is also a gym and Holodeck three. I think you should also know that this deck has VIP quarters along with main sickbay. Deck eight has a crew lounge also and deck 9 is where the crew quarters are located.” Jamey turned and looked at her before he said his next comment, “I hate to say this but decks ten through fourteen are off limits as well.” This too didn’t seem to acquire a response, so he moved on with the tour thinking that she must be ok with not being about to get to most of the ship.
After a while they found their way back to Holodeck one on deck seven where Jamey had a surprise waiting for Kedzie … a recreation of Kendra Province. The door opened and they walked in … he noticed right off that something about this was wrong by the look on her face and Jamey said, “I thought I could continue hearing about Bajor here … but if you don’t want to ---.” At that point she held up her hands as to stop him from saying any more ---
“Of course,” Kedzie acknowledged. “I know that I wouldn’t exactly feel that ship security was very good if random civilians were allowed everywhere.”
Kedzie tried, and seemed to manage, to change the subject, awkwardly though she did. She didn’t like holodecks, and she didn’t think she could genuinely enjoy watching a game that she knew wasn’t real. Maybe it was just that as she had grown up she could just go outside and play in the fresh air, and maybe ship life would change her, but it hadn’t yet and it didn’t really seem likely to.
Kedzie held up her hands, and he trailed off. “It’s not that I don’t appreciate the thought,” she explained. “But I don’t really like holodecks much. Because this,” she gestured at the mountains, hills, and patchwork fields, “this isn’t real. If this was really Kendra Province, if this was really home, then my family would be here, and the neighbors would probably be working in their fields, and the temple over there,” Kedzie pointed off in the distance, “Would be abuzz with Pylars and Ranjens, and even a couple of Vedeks.”
Jamey looked like he was about to say something, but Kedzie wasn’t sure if he was going to give an order to the computer or talk to her, and she really didn’t want him to do the former.
“But even if I could see their figures in the distance, I would know that it wouldn’t be them. It wouldn’t be real. I’ve never really been able to lose myself in a holodeck, to banish reality for an hour or two, forget that everything here is just artificial, it’s fake. Maybe it’s an intrinsic flaw in my way of thinking about things, maybe it could be fixed, but I’m fine the way I am,” she finished, and realized that she hadn’t given Jamey a chance to say anything the entire time.
“I’m sorry,” she apologized, realizing that she had been extremely rude, and she probably didn’t even need to have talked for that long anyway.”
…“I’m sorry,” Kedzie apologized …
“Sorry, … no, no, I’m sorry for making an assumption. I shouldn’t have been this forward. I was just thinking you could use the holodeck to have more space than you have due to the civilian restrictions on this ship. Please, let us go back to the General Lounge and we can continue talking there …”
Just then the COMM rang out for Jamey to come back to the bridge … [glow=blue,2,300]=^=[/glow] Lieutenant Parker, this is Commander Savot. We are receiving abnormal power fluctuation readings from the planetship, your presence is required on the bridge. [glow=blue,2,300]=^=[/glow]
Looking down at this COM badge and giving an acknowledge, Jamey looked at Kedzie with a frustrated look and said, “It looks like we will need to continue this later … please, let me walk you back to your quarters.” Kedzie agreed, and as they both walked Jamey was walked faster now than before in antiapation on why Savot had called to the bridge. He never could tell what was going on just by the sound of Savot’s voice. He looked over to her and said, “Kedzie, I hope your not thinking that I’m being over assertive in myself by being your personal ship’s greeter but, I know how hard it is to be on a new ship and be a civilian. I just wanted to make you feel welcome … it never hurts to have a friend.” He didn’t know what she would say to this, but he wanted her to know.
Kedzie agreed, wondering how important the power fluctuations were. The person on the com, Commander Savot, hadn’t sounded worried, but Jamey was walking very quickly now.
“No, you’re not being overassertive,” Kedzie answered. “It was nice of you to do it, I appreciate it a lot. I do feel welcome now, and it’s nice to have someone greet me, and to have someone to talk to for a while. And you’re right, it doesn’t hurt to have a friend.” Kedzie smiled. “I enjoyed talking to you, I hope that I wasn’t too annoying, or bothersome. And I understand that you have duties that you need to return to,” she said, as they reached the door of her quarters.
After Jamey had left, Kedzie began to arrange her goods within her quarters. She took her time doing so, she didn’t see any reason to hurry, she didn’t have anywhere to be. It gave her a certain lightness to realize this, and her unpacking slowed, until soon she was barely moving, merely thinking. She wondered what the power fluctuation really meant, and whether or not it was a threat to the ship, and whether or not anyone would tell her if it was. Or, for that matter, what she would do if someone did tell her.
She resumed unpacking at a reasonable pace, and took out a small Mandala, prayer shrine, that partially unfolded. It had been the smallest that she had been able to find, and even though it was collapsible, it took up about a seventh of her baggage space. Kedzie gently took the candles and insence that she had packed carefully, and placed them on the shelf of the Mandala.
As the Trispen and Pytalus, New Orleans and Steamrunner class vessels respectively, fell into position forming a sort of inverse triagular prism with the planetship at its "peak", relative to the El Salvador, Savot, Jamey, and Kevin all sat focussed on their stations, intent on performing their duty no matter what exited the Lake opening. Tensions were high among some of the bridge crew, and though all hid their trepidation under quality training, they didn't have to wait long before action revealed itself...
Emerging from the planetvessel at first were 4 compact looking vessels, definitely designed more for functionality than elegance. Indeed their simple appearance, though more rectangular than cubicle, produced a slight shudder from Kevin Zimmerman as he shook his fears aside and tried to lose himself in the data scans of the incoming vessels.
The El Salvador floated in space, directly facing downward into the hole of the Lake, and as such stared the lead vessel in the face as it exited. The 4 ships came out in a diamond pattern, one ship at the front, two just behind it to either side of it, with the last one directly astern of the lead ship, though at a higher elevation to avoid the impulse wake of the leader.
Before the final ship even began to emerge, all three senior officers had seen the reading, and as Zimmerman was indeed shaken by unwanted images of the Borg, Parker was the first to give vocal mention to the readings. "Sir! Power buildup in their weapons! Preparing for evasive action!"
Savot analyzed the readings, and spoke to Jamey at his right, "Full power to dorsal thrusters, bring the shape straight down the Y-axis." Jamey may have considered the order odd, or he may have realized the intent, but either way his discipline kicked in without delay and he sent the El Salvador plunging straight "down" relative to her current position, taking themselves out of the direct line of sight of the incoming diamond formation.
At the same instant he conveyed his orders to Jamey, Savot sent a silent transmission to each of the other vessels, transmitting them directly to the Captain's consoles on either ship, hoping they'd agree due to the seriousness of the situation. He looked up at the viewscreen and was greeted by the welcome sight of the unveiling of the scene he had most ideally hoped for...
As the El Salvador sank into space out of the direct flight path of the ships, the automaship's weapons all fired at once, and as Savot hoped, these ships were just as automated as the planetship. The auto sensors on the last ship had followed the El Salavdor's dip, and as such fired at a downward angle as she sank. Unfortunately for them this placed their lead vessel directly in the path of said blasts, and purple energy struck the back of their lead vessel violently.
At the same moment the other two Federation vessels came into view over the horizon of either side of the planetship, phasers and torpedoes hurtling towards the now-strained rear shields of the lead vessel, buckling the ship horrendously under the torment, tearing the ship to pieces without the El Salvador firing a single initial shot.
The Federation reinforcements formed a X cross as they soared over the now-triangular enemy formation and switched sides of space. But as this shift in formation took place, a similar one took place within the automaships' as well, and they each split off following one Federation ship apiece.
Given the power of each starship even alone, this would not have concerned any of the crews involved, but as they read more and more diamond formations exiting the planetvessel, the probability of victory became less and less certain. The cheering facial expressions of the El Sal's bridge crew, with the exception of Savot of course though he managed to look satisfied, soon diminished as they saw the numbers that awaited them...
::It isnt until the sudden sounding of the Red Alert Klaxons that Deis and Kalen look up from the prone figure lying in the biobed. At the unmistakable sound Deis head jerks up from the pale girl to the lights. She immediatly taps her commbadge* =/\=Mr. Savot Report!=/\= ::then she feels the faint recoil of a slight glancing blow from the shields. Its faint but noticable...her ship is under fire. She has to resist the immediate urge to run for the bridge...its intuition...this girl is somehow more important than whatevers going on out there::
~Savot taps his commbadge quickly before his hands return to his Ops console and the tactical station bypass initiated through it. =/\= Savot here. We are under attack from numerous vessels emerging from the planetship, approximately comparable to our primary hull in size. No attempts at communication were offered before they opened fire and no attempts on our part are engendering response. No life signs are detected on any of the ships thus far. One enemy vessel destroyed. More continuing to enter combat, 11 enemy vessels in-theatre thus far. I theorize that this response is in correlation with our removal of the aged female child. =/\= Savot stopped speaking but left the channel open to recieve any change in orders Deis might give.~
::Deis listens to this standing next to the biobed...she is as suprised as suddenly Savot hears, from a voice not Deis...small, tired, female and rather reedy from sickness:: =/\=Secondary....Protocol...no=/\=
~The bridge crew, hearing through the intercomm of Savot's commbadge, take a brief second to look at each other, and perhaps to the amusement of an unconnected passerby, all perform a masterful rendition of the vulcan's traditional elevated eyebrow as they all wonder what exactly they just heard, but as they all look back to the viewscreen none are uncertain as to what this Protocol refers to...~
::there are the sounds of some sort of activity and Deis herself says:: =/\= As ye were Commander, keep em off us. Irae out.=/\=
::the words were terse and spoken with a sudden ultra lack of emotion that its almost uncannily vulcanish, save for the thick accenting that spoils the effect completly. Could be simple astonishment that provides the calm. She terminates the conn before she can hear more. The girl on the bed locked eyes with her the moment she looked down and Deis stands there as though mesmerized. The pale bald figure has the most brilliantly blue eyes shes ever seen and when awake, she seems to shine oddly. The biobed seems to obey her as she sits up, pushing away the life support machinery...she rubs small fingers over the marking of the odd hypospray and says:: You have healed me.
::Deis gets over her suprise quickly...she knew the medication would work but wow...so completly. The girl is standing next to the biobed a moment later and looking up at Deis with the directness of an old woman:: Who are you? Where is everyone else?
::The petite irishwoman offers her a small smile, knowing this wont be easy...but knowing that even though this girl looks like a child...shes probably far from it. She answers with kindness but directness:: I be...Cap'n Deis Irae of the Federation Starship El Salvador. We came 'ere t investigate why yer planet was makin Colonists dissappear. ::she knows that the girl knows whats going on...so can be as honest as possible about it. We know nae wha happened t th rest o yer people...we found only yerself. ::her instincts as a Doctor reassert themselves now:: Ye shouldnae be outa tha bed.
::The girl forestalls further protests with a commanding lift of her hand, as though accustomed to command herself. But not in an arrogant manner. No smile graces her suddenly very sad looking face:: You have healed my sickness. Therefor i should no longer be abed. It would be better perhaps had i died... ::Deis opens her mouth to protest but the girl shakes her head and again Deis waits, listening:: They are all gone...Secondary Protocol...the programming has failed. I live though...i am alone.
::Just then a heavy strike hammers the shields, giving the ship a much harder shake than last time::
