Kiseli Danar was checking her messages. There was nothing important. There was a new one from her mother, once again saying how proud she was of her baby girl. There was an older one from her stepfather, mostly just urging her to be careful. And, of course, one from Kinta, telling her to have fun and “stay awesome.” The message that she was hoping for the most was not there--the Symbiosis Commission had not yet given her a response. She was hopeful that her new posting would influence their ultimate decision in a positive way.
She hadn’t planned on being assigned to a starship so quickly, but apparently the (she read over the notification again) USS Olympia had immediate need for a medical officer. Kiseli supposed that she had been the closest unassigned doctor to the ship’s current position, which is why they had loaded her onto a runabout in practically the middle of the night with only a pilot and sent her off. It was a little bit exciting, and a little bit scary. She just hoped that she’d be able to do her job and do it right.
She was still young, having just received her medical degree. In theory, she was an excellent doctor, but in practice, she was still largely untested. However, Starfleet believed that a ship with a new doctor was still far better off than a ship with no doctor. Kiseli tended to agree. Secretly, though, she hoped her expertise would not be needed beyond basic first aid… for her first few days, at least.
“Approaching the Olympia now, Doctor,” the pilot of the shuttlecraft said. Kiseli looked up from her PADD, momentarily startled by the sudden voice after a mostly silent trip. She stood up and eagerly made her way to the cockpit. She could see the Starship in the viewscreen.
“Ooh,” she gasped. “Pretty.”
“USS Olympia, this is runabout USS Rhine. Preparing to transport Doctor Kiseli Danar.” The pilot turned to Kiseli and waved a hand at her. “They’re ready for you, Doctor, make sure all your things are together.” She stepped back to the passenger area and picked up her bag, nodding enthusiastically. “Ready when you are, Olympia,” the pilot said. He turned around and gave Kiseli a farewell wave.
Kiseli rematerialized in the Olympia’s transporter room. She looked around, eyes wide, hardly able to believe that she was actually finding herself in a place like this. Hoisting her bag over her shoulder, she stepped down off of the transporter pad. “Could you please inform the Captain, or the bridge, or someone, of my arrival?” she asked the transporter chief, slightly flustered and overwhelmed. “Thank you. Very much.”
She stepped out into the hallway, and the ship’s computer was perfectly willing to direct her to the sickbay.

Steve saw the look on the team's faces when it was said that he would be joining them. 'I think they need a bit of re-assurance.' he thought.
"Commodore, do you have anything to add before we leave ?" Tan asked.
Steve then stepped forward into the centre of the room. "Yes, thank you David. I do." He paused and looked around the room at each and every individual that was present. He rested his hands on the table, and carried on...
"I know exactly what is going through your heads right now. Why am I putting myself in danger by going with you? Well let me tell you something some of you may or may not know. Before joining the command track, I was previously a CTSO for many years, so I have experience in this sort of thing and I can take care of myself. But above all else, it is our XO down there....one of us, and there is no way I am idly sit by and wait for things to unfold."
Steve stopped ttalking and approached the weapons trunk that had been brought into the room. He attached his usual hand phaser to his waist. "Saddle up.." He added and his picked up a phaser rifle as well. "..Lock and load."

David stepped back and watched as the Captain reached the large table. He looked around the room, picking out individuals, then spoke. "...... But above all else it is our XO down there ... One of us, and there is no way I am idly sit by and wait for things to unfold." he said, moving to the weapons locker, "...... Lock and load." Tan assigned transporters as everyone grabbed a weapon. "Mister Murdoch. Take your Marines and four of Commander Huebners Security staff to the transporter in cargo bay one ... We'll co-ordinate almost simultaneous transport to the surface. You and your men will beam down a few seconds before the remainder of the team containing the Commodore and myself." "Aye Sir." Murdoch said, pointing at his men who filed out of the room in double time. Reaching the transporter room, Steven stepped up onto the pad, double-checking the power pack in his rifle, he nodded to Tan. "Whenever you're ready Mister Tan." David tapped the Comm button on the transporter panel. =^= Tan to Murdoch =^= =^= Murdoch =^= =^= We're about to transport you and your men .. Secure the area and check for a suitable place to set up the pattern enhancers .. I'm not taking any chances on our 'departure' being delayed =^= =^= We're ready Commander .. See you down there =^= Tan closed the Comm and told the Transporter Chief to energize. "They're down safely Sir." he said a few seconds later. David jumped onto the pad and raised his rifle to the horizontal before looking at the Captain. Steven nodded and signaled for their own transport. Tan felt the tell-tale grip of the beam, then the Olympia vanished ... A second later, he re-appeared, but now in a darkened tunnel, part of a cave formation. He dropped to one knee, rotating the phaser-rifle through the arc of his vision .. "We're clear." he heard Murdoch say. Several security officers already had tricorders out and were scanning the area. "Tunnels lead off in that direction." one said, pointing deeper into the tunnel system. "After you." Tan said, casually holding the Commodore back until several of the Marines had gone first .... It was one thing for the Commanding Officer to join an away team, but David would be damned if he was going to allow him point .......... < tag : ALL CREW >

The tunnel's were dark, poorly lit .. They looked like old mining tunnels, with rough walls, curved ceiling, but a level, well constructed floor. Lieutenant Murdoch was moving ahead three Marines, two panning tricorders in front of them, while flanking the away team left and right, then Security Officers following close behind, watching their rear. No-one was making a sound. The structural configuration of the walls would have sent the spoken word far into the distance, alerting anyone to their presence. Several times, David had to 'persuade' the Commodore not to try to get ahead of his Officers, but Tan could fully understand the mans eagerness to get his people back ... They had been moving through the large tunnel for almost fifteen minutes, hugging the walls as they approached curves in their path. But suddenly Murdoch raised his clenched fist .. No-one needed telling to stop instantly and await information. Everyone remained silent as the Marine Lieutenant rounded another bend and was lost from sight. Three minutes later he reappeared, heading straight for his Commanding Officer. "Sir ..." he whispered, "The tunnel splits into two just ahead ... I've scanned both to a distance of approximately two hundred meters. There's life-signs down both options, but I can't tell which our Exec' is in ..." "Anyone got a coin ?" David whispered wryly, looking around the tunnel, "There was a recessed area about twenty meters back. We could set up the pattern enhancers there. Not much chance of them being spotted in this light. At least we won't need to make it all the way to open ground before the Olympia can get a hold of us. What do you think ?" he finished, looking at his CO .......... < tag : ALL ... Come on everyone >

Jedda Rose
(OOC: Jedda is Crystal's 18 year old cousin and a first year starfleet cadet who accidentally/on purpose decided to stay on the Olympia when the ship left Earth. She has been assigned to the science department to keep her out of trouble.)
The hour had come and gone. Jedda had long since finished her lunch. She was now getting worried about Crystal, it was somewhat irrational, Crystal was the FO after all, but she was family and she was missing. The computer had told her that Crystal wasn't on board the ship. Jedda guessed that the away mission had somehow gone wrong but no one was telling her exactly what had happened.
She had made her way down to the science labs to get on with the cataloguing that V'Sel had assigned her. It was dull work but she had expected that and was doing it without (much) complaining. She was hoping that it would distract her from her worries about her cousin and she did not notice that her hands were shaking and her knuckles were white.
At least, she didn't notice until the fragile specimen dish she was carrying to the replicator for recycling shattered in her hand, shards of crystalline material embedded themselves in her palm. She looked at the clear shards sticking out of her skin and the blood beginning to well up around them for a numb second or three. Then, clasping her hand to her chest to avoid dripping everywhere Jedda hurried to sickbay.
She hadn't been in sickbay before and she stepped through the door then stopped unsure of what was supposed to happen next. She was feeling a little light headed .
"Ummm, could I have some help please? I've had a bit of an accident?" Jedda said. It was then the blood finally started escaping from her hand and small droplets spattered to the deck.

Commander First Class Crystal Rose
Crystal had not yet worked out precisely what race these aliens were but she had narrowed down the alternatives. There were certainly stronger than humans. The grip around her upper arm proved that. She was led through dimly lit featureless grey corridors, she was doing her best to remember the route they had taken but she was still very lost as to exactly where 'here' was. James had said that he had been at the southern polar region but he had been drugged and unconscious since then so they could be anywhere now.
Ahead a door hissed open. Crystal was propelled into a small room that was grey and featureless like everything else here. It contained a third alien and a chair. Crystal was manhandled into the chair and strapped to around the shoulders and ankles.
The third alien then dismissed the two who had brought her here. As the door hissed closed he fixed his black-eyes gaze on Crystal then he addressed her in a slightly raspy voice. "Who are you and why have you come here."
From the moment she had been taken out of her cell Crystal had thought that it would come to this. However, the reality was far different from her half-imaginings.
"I am Commander First Class Crystal Jennifer Rose. Starfleet Serial number GK-635-227. As to why I am here, you should know you had me brought here." Crystal wasn't quite sure where this surge of courage that allowed her to say this without a shake in her voice and a slight smile on her face had come from but she hoped it would last. He repeated his question and Crystal word-for-word repeated her answer. She had the feeling that things were about to go down hill fast.
She didn't see the hand that lashed across her face but it seemed that she was on the right track. The repetitive conversation continued for a while. Then he stepped back and stared at her once more.
"You will tell me all about your ship and her crew." Crystal shook her head a small smile continued to play on her lips. She was bruised but so far he hadn't really hurt her. It seemed it was yet another one in the long line of people who had thought Crystal was younger and more fragile than she really was. She planned to take advantage of it if at all possible. "I will tolerate your disobedience no longer. I want to know whay you are here. I want to know details of your ship and her crew." He pushed a pad and stylus into her hands. Crystal took the offered objects, she had obviously been placed into the 'not threat' category. She looked down at the blank screen for a second or two and then threw the two objects to the far corner of the room. Not an easy move with the strap around her shoulders but none the less she managed it. Her captor's gaze followed the objects and he did not notice Crystal's hand dipping in to her pocket.
His hand lashed Crystal across the face harder than before rocking her head hard sideways. He repeated the blow leaving Crystal to wonder whether she had miscalculated this. After the fourth blow her head lolled back, eyes closed.
Crystal dimly heard scuffling and cursing, She wasn't unconscious but she was closer to it than she had planned. The straps on her ankles was undone and then she felt hands working the strap around her shoulders, she could also felt hot breath on her neck. She managed to stay still as she felt the strap loosen. Then she snapped her eyes open and brought the comm badge close to his ear jamming her thumb in the back and shorting out the speaker as she did so. It stung as much as it had done last time she had attempted this trick. The ear-splitting shriek released was most gratifying even more gratifying was the realisation that she had been correct in her assessment that these aliens had sensitive hearing. He jerked hard away from her raising his hands to his ears as he did so. It was then that Crystal lashed out herself finally putting her self-defence training into practise. To her surprise it actually worked and she caught him in the stomach with both feet using every microgramme of strength she possessed. He staggered away from her alternating between clutching his ears and his middle.
Crystal quickly got off the chair and made her way to the door. fortunately it wasn't locked. She slipped through hurried and took a moment to pull open an access panel and short the door lock out so he wouldn't be coming after her any time soon. She sent off down the corridor keeping her eyes and ears open.

The crew of the Olympia split into two teams. Lieutenant Murdoch decided to split his men between the two tunnels. Two would go down the north tunnel, they would have three other Officers with them, including a medic, while he and the other Marine would accompany Tan and the Commodore into the west heading tunnel. "Sir." Salomon said quietly, "My men will contact me using our 'ping' system. One ping from my Comm will inform me they have found something and are moving ahead to investigate .. Two pings will signal they have found our people." he finished, nodding to the Sergeant he'd assigned to the north tunnel to move out. < tag : ALL CREW > Murdoch moved into the middle of their tunnel. There was little point in hiding at this point, as they still had a long way to go. He scanned the area, studying the readings carefully, then re-scanned to be sure. Once seemingly satisfied, he motioned for the rest to follow. Constantly scanning ahead Murdoch suddenly froze .. Giving the signal to halt, he waved Smith and Tan forward .. "We've got a problem." "Oh ?" Steven said, frowning at the empty tunnel ahead. Without warning there was a muffled sound, unmistakably some sort of detonation. It was obvious what had happened .. "THAT !" Murdoch almost hissed as he looked back along the tunnel, then without waiting, or needing permission given the situation, he touched his Comm badge and spoke as quietly as possible, not wanting to alert anyone to their presence. =^= Murdoch to Olympia .. DO NOT verbally acknowledge this communication .. Ping only .. Beta team need medical assistance .. There has been an explosion .. Repeat .. Beta require assistance .. Lock onto their tricorder signal and transport Med' personnel plus additional Security NOW .. Murdoch out =^= An almost inaudible 'ping' was heard, then the Comm went silent. David risked a Comm, he tapped his badge and spoke. =^= Tan to Huebner .. Situation report =^= =^= We set off a mine Commander .. Should have seen it comi ...... =^= Joel began. =^= Assistance is on the way from Olympia .. Any signs you have been located ? =^= David interupted, knowing time was of the essence. =^= Non as yet Commander .. But two of my men are critical .. We need to move them out Sir =^= =^= Wait for the help to arrive Commander .. Tan out =^= < tag : Doctor & Councillor .. You are both needed in the north tunnel >Sir's ......" Murdoch said, patiently waiting. "What do we have Mister Murdoch ... More mines ?" the Commodore said. Salomon activated his lamp after facing it toward his body so the white light wouldn't travel via reflection down the tunnel, then switched to infra-red. Pointing it in the direction they were traveling, Smith and Tan were shocked to see what was ahead ... Every few meters, a proximity mine was attached to the walls, ceiling, and floor of the tunnel. Unless the Marine could find a way to de-activate the mines, they were going nowhere fast. They would be dead within meters if they attempted to by-pass the mines while live. "There's no 'off' switch I suppose ?" one of the team said managing not to laugh at their situation .......... < tag : Crystal >

It was obvious that they were going to need time to disarm the mines ..
"How long to make them safe Lieutenant ?" Smith said.
"Five .. Maybe ten minutes." Murdoch said shrugging, "Per mine !" he finished.
"Well we can't rely on anyone from up ahead. Get started." Tan said, turning to his Commanding Officer, "I'm going to back-track, check the situation in the other tunnel."
Steven nodded, rubbing his temples.
David made his way back the way they had come. He needed to move quickly, but as quietly as possible. Anyone hearing the explosion could simply decide that the mines had done their job, and whoever, or whatever, was in the tunnel was now dead. But it was possible they would come to investigate for themselves.
Reaching the intersection, Tan first back-tracked a short distance down the main tunnel to check on the pattern enhancers that had been set up earlier. Once he knew they were still active he went back to the intersection.
Smoke was hugging the ceiling of the north tunnel as he started slowly down. All the lighting had been destroyed in the explosion, so he was relying on his arm-lamp. After approximately one hundred meters, he saw the first of the casualties ...
One of Murdoch's Marines ... He was dead, that was more than obvious. David moved forward, and within a few meters could see the rest of the team that had taken the north channel. Two of the Security Officers were groaning in pain. David almost vomited as he realized what was lining the walls, ceiling, and a large part of the floor. It looked like one Officer had taken the full blast from the mine closest to her. It had almost vaporized her body instantly. But luckily for the other Marine, she was directly between himself and the mine. David knelt next to the man, or what was left of him .. It never failed to amaze him how much punishment the human body could take and still live. moving as quickly as possible, he took out his meager Med-kit and injected the full capacity of the hypo-spray into the mans neck, then tapped his Comms badge ..
=^= Tan to Olympia =^= he hissed, covering the badge with one hand knowing the reply would be loud in the confines of the tunnel.
=^= Olympia =^=
=^= I need medical personnel beamed direct to my location =^=
=^= Sir .. Doctor Danar is assembling a team now .. She will be down shortly =^=
=^= SHORTLY is NOT good enough .. I have dead and injured people down here .. If she isn't ready send whoever the HELL you can .. NOW .. Understand me .. Tan out =^=
David hit his Comm badge so hard he knew he'd almost smashed it, but wasn't interested. He turned back to the man at his feet.
'Someone is going to pay for this !' he thought ..........

Crystal was making her way gingerly through the complex. Part of her slow progress was that she had to keep doubling back to avoid people she was sure she had seen at least one Romulan here as well as the other aliens who she was now nearly sure were Kavarlans. The other reason for her slow progress was that she ached and was feeling more than a little dizzy. She doubted there was any serious damage done or she wouldn't have got this far.
She had so far been relatively successful at sealing people in their rooms and often without them realising it. She had also been trying to track down some kit that would help her get out of this place. She had seen the entrance to her old cell but there were two Kavarlans on guard there and she didn't dare try a frontal assault. She took a chance and peered trough the window in a door, this room seemed to be some sort of lab and better yet it seemed to be empty. She tapped the entry panel and was very gratified to find that it opened. She decided that the potential gains were worth the risk and entered the empty room. A small scanner laying on one of the benches was the first thing that caught her eye. She quickly gathered it up along with a set of wire cutters, a laser scalpel, a hand light and a few other odds and ends. Back when she'd been Chief Science Officer she'd have bent someone's ear for leaving a lab in this sort of state, right now she felt that she ought to thank them.
She left the lab as quickly as she could and even remembered to close the door behind her. Now she just had to find her way to the exit...
After some effort Crystal located a corridor that seemed to be more of a tunnel as it did not seem to have any rooms off it. Crystal scanned the area and checked the energy readings, the dampening fields were a bit weaker here, which suggested she was heading the right way.
She'd only gone a few metres along the passageway when an explosion staggered her. The shock wave knocked her to one of the walls and she hung on to avoid falling. Crystal walked on slowly scanner held before her. There was clearly something dangerous ahead and she could read lifesigns as well. They were human as near as she could tell. So far the only other human in this place had been James, hopeful this meant an Olympia team to the rescue.
Her scanner screen changed indicating the presence of some sort of explosives in the walls up ahead, 'gift for unwelcome visitors', Crystal thought and then winced as she realised what that might mean coupled with an Olympia rescue team. The was darkness around the corner and Crystal edged round it in silence wary of whatever might be beyond.
=^= SHORTLY is NOT good enough .. I have dead and injured people down here .. If she isn't ready send whoever the HELL you can .. NOW .. Understand me .. Tan out =^=
Crystal heaved a sigh realising that both her thoughts had been correct. She squinted seeing a light 20 metres of so ahead of her. She flipped on the hand torch and slowly swept the beam around until she located David Tan, he was leaning over someone on the floor.
"David, it's Crystal." She said, pitching her voice just loud enough to carry though the 15 metre long mined area that separated them. She was unable to keep her tiredness and pain out of her words though, or her relief. She saw his head snap round towards her and she lowered her torch slightly to keep from shining it straight in his eyes.
Tag: David
She aimed the scanner at the walls taking as detailed readings as the small device was capable of. "I see we have a bit of a problem here. They're really quite crude devices, but certainly effective." There was a little bit of babble in her words. She doubted she was saying anything that David wasn't more than aware of.
"I'm pretty sure I can crack their access code and convince them to switch to standby mode. All I need to do is send a correctly tuned energy pulse to each mine.... Can I borrow a phaser, please?" She knew that a phaser would provide the perfect source of energy for sending the necessary pulse, of course, if she got the code wrong it was very likely that the pulse would cause the mine to detonate but she didn't mention that.

Time was slowly ticking by as Steve held fast in his position whilst the mines were being deactivated. Trouble was, it was taking quite a while to clear the mine, and in that time, anything could happen. He was also getting quite restless. Steve was not one for just idly standing around when he cold very well be doing something.
He approached Lieutenant Murdoch. "How's it coming along, Lieutenant?"
Murdoch didnt seem too pleased. "Well, we have managed to cut down the amount of time it is taking to deactivate the mines, sir....but not by much. It's still going to take a little while to clear them."
"We may not have 'a little while'." Steve replied.
"I know that sir, but I am going as quick as I can possible go, without blowing us all to pieces."
"I know you are Lieutenant.....keep at it." Steve said, and walked off. "Everyone, stay here." He called while still walking, "I'm going to check on Commander Tan."
Steve followed the tunnels back the way he came for a fair while. Then all of a sudden he came across a sickening sight. There were members of his crew laying in various places in one area, with a wide variety of injuries to them....some of them VERY severe and close to death. Unfortunatly, there already was one or two fatalities.
"My god...." Steve said to himself, barely audible. He closed his eyes and lightly shook his head. Things had just got worse.
Steve opened his eyes to hear and see David shouting down the tunnel, so he approached him. Tapping David on the shoulder, Steve sopek to him. "Umm, David.....what are you doing?"

=^= SHORTLY is NOT good enough .. I have dead and injured people down here .. If she isn't ready send whoever the HELL you can .. NOW .. Understand me .. Tan out =^=
David didn't need to check the seriousness of the man's injury, he had lost two limbs, his left arm above the elbow, and left leg almost to the hip. He was bleeding profusely and Tan couldn't see how he could survive.
He ripped a length of cloth that looked at a glance as if it had once been part of a tunic and wrapped it around the stump of the mans leg. Tying it as tightly as possible to stem the flow of blood, he looked round for something to bind the severed arm with. Suddenly the beam of a torch hit him in the eye's. He lifted an arm, lowering his body. snatching up the phaser from the floor beside him, he aimed it toward the light preparing to fire !
"David ... It's Crystal !"
Tan lowered the phaser a fraction as he heard the familiar voice of the Exec' ..
"Crystal .. Good to 'see' you. Be careful, the tunnel is mined !"
"Yes, I can see them." Crystal said, having activated the infra-red on her scanner, "I'm pretty sure I can crack their access code and convince them to switch to standby mode. All I need to do is send a correctly tuned energy pulse to each mine ... Can I borrow a phaser, please ?"
David switched his phaser to stand-by, and placing it in one of the med-kit bags, stood up .. He was pretty certain something this small wouldn't set off the proximity fuse on the mines, but to be safe, he moved back down the tunnel a few meters .. Spinning the bag vertically through three hundred sixty degrees, he made two rotations then let the bag go. It sailed in a shallow arc down the tunnel, almost colliding with a mine close to it's flight-path, but finally hit the floor within meters of Crystal's feet.
Picking up the bag, the Exec' withdrew the phaser and reactivated it .. Checking the settings, she began to scan the closest mine to ascertain it's frequency ...
Tan was concentrating so much on the Exec' working, that he never heard anyone approach. The tap on his shoulder almost caused him to proverbially 'jump out of his skin' ..
"Umm, David ..... What are you doing ?"
Tan spun round, almost leveling the Commodore with a right hook, but managed to pull it in time ..
"Sir ! ..." David said, "Commander Rose is down there trying to deactivate the remaining mines. This is all that's left of the people who entered the tunnel earlier." he finished, looking with utter sadness at the carnage before him ..........

Crystal watched as David swung the med-kit bag round by it's strap and launched it through the air towards her. It landed at her feet and she picked up it reactivating the phaser quickly and starting to fiddle with the settings (fiddle in the scientific sense you understand).
She heard David talking to the Commodore on the other side of the minefield and made a mental note to ask David two very important questions: firstly why exactly he had let Commodore Smith come on the away mission and secondly: if she was here, David was here, the Commodore was here, the CTSO was undoubtedly here so who exactly was in charge up there.
Crystal's eyes flickered between the readouts on her 'borrowed' scanner and the tuning of the phaser. She knew she would have exactly one chance at this and if it went wrong... well she would never know about it.
She check her final settings and then checked it again for good measure, she could not afford to get this wrong. She turned towards the nearest wall. She aimed the phase at a mine and press the trigger stud.
The beam leapt out looking different from usual; it was much more flickery and far less focussed. Crystal didn't close her eyes.
She exhaled the breath she hadn't realised that she was holding. She was still here and the scanner was not not registering power in the device.
Crystal took a step forward, "I'll be with you shortly" she said as she lined up and zapped the next mine. She was still wary that someone could come up the passageway behind her.

"I'll be with you shortly."
David heard the determination in the Exec's voice, but he heard something else too, and knew exactly what she was thinking.
Unbeknown to Crystal, her first question was going through Tan's mind too. He could have been more insistent, even to the point of quoting Star fleet regulation twelve, but he knew it would have done no good. The Commodore was determined to go on this mission regardless of his Second Officers' objections.
The Commodore had assigned Conn to the Chief Engineer, a young, relatively inexperienced Officer, but a Command Officer nevertheless. 'All this is moot at the moment' Tan thought suddenly hearing something from back the way they had come ..
Holding a finger to his lips he nudged the Commodore up against the wall of the tunnel. Steven remained silent as instructed as David pointed back down the tunnel, making a 'walking' motion with two fingers .. Smith obviously understood, nodding confirmation.
David looked round, finally finding a discarded phaser, obviously from one of the dead. Checking it was functional, he set off down the tunnel toward the sound ..
He had gone less than forty meters when he saw the shadow of someone approaching from round the slight bend. Trying to blend into the wall, he waited, nerves on edge, for the man to appear. When he did, David raised the phaser and fired .. To his astonishment the weapon refused to fire ! .. There was no time to think about it as the man had spotted him and was already raising his own weapon. David launched himself across the gap between them, knocking the out-dated phaser-rifle aside as he plowed into the mans chest.
Both tried to gain the upper hand as they grappled on the floor, trading punches, elbows and blocks, but the renegade got the first break, managing to get a choke-hold on David. Tan maneuvered himself, using all his martial arts knowledge, until he could use his free hand to reach back toward the mans neck.
Tan was beginning to suffer from oxygen deprivation due to the choke hold, and he knew that he needed to do something now or loose this fight, and possibly his life along with it.
Placing his feet to brace himself, and hopefully prevent his attacker from moving, he reached back until he felt the neck of the man behind him. Placing his fingers alongside his spine, he used his thumb to feel for the pulse that defined the carotid artery. Estimating he could hold out for about a minute before loosing consciousness himself, he began to apply pressure on the pulsing artery ..
The man realized instantly what Tan was attempting and began to struggle, hoping to dislodge the grip. But Tan had his fingers against the man's spinal column, and with his thumb now firmly applying pressure to the side of the neck, it was going to be almost impossible to escape.
"Pl .... ea .... sssee." the man tried to say, knowing he had little time to survive this.
David ignored the plea and increased pressure on the artery. A few seconds later, the man's grip on him began to ease, his body first seeming to relax, then finally go totally limp as the last of his life ebbed away.
Tan held his position, thumb against artery, for almost thirty seconds, ensuring his foe had perished. Then he stood, shaking, every nerve on edge. He neither condoned, or liked killing, but some things were necessary.
Taking several deep breaths, he concentrated his mind to relax but remain alert to his surroundings. Once he was satisfied, he dragged the body to a darkened alcove, then began the long walk back down the tunnel ..........

David walked back to the group in silence. partly because he needed to ensure the fight hadn't been overheard, but also because he was reflecting on the fact that he had taken a life.
This was the second time he had been forced to kill someone, and wryly thought it was becoming a habit. Both deaths, had been necessary, he knew that, but it didn't take away his regret at the fact.
Moving along the tunnel, he suddenly noticed a small alcove. He edged into the dark recess and came up against a door. There was a small access pad to one side. David put his ear to the door, hoping to establish if there was anyone waiting on the other side. Hearing nothing, he put his back against the wall and tapped the pad. The door opened silently.
Tan looked into the room and was surprised at the contents .. Weapons ... Weapons of every description, from phaser rifles to grenade's. 'Hell these people are stocking for a damn war !' he thought. Moving back out of the room, he closed the door and re-entered the tunnel. He needed to appraise the Commodore of his find, with a bit of luck a well placed detonator could cause more than enough havoc to cover their escape ..........

This wasn't what he'd expected his first time out. A kidnapped first officer, a fire fight...well, that meant there'd be work for him in the long run. He'd have to talk to the FO about her experience, insure there wasn't any severe trauma that would impede her duties...and add that on top of the fact he'd been advised to keep an eye on the Commodore due to his loss of wife. Yes, once he got back to the Olympia there'd be plenty for him to do.
Drakon Harper moved holding his phaser loosely not particularly wanting to use it but ready to do so if he had to. Hopefully they'd get out of this mess soon.

Crystal disabled the last of the mines and stepped through to the other end of the passageway. She was surrounded by the remains of what had been a security team. She fought the urge to retch and looked around quickly. David had gone but Commodore Smith was still there. Crystal walked over to him.
"Crystal Rose reporting back in for duty, sir." She knew the scene looked somewhat comical given that the top of her head was approximately on a level with his comm badge. Not to mention she was bloody and no doubt the bruises were all ready starting to show.
Tag: Commodore Smith.
"The Councillor and Doctor James McKenna, a federation scientist are still being held. I should think they know I'm gone by now. I would suggest that we regroup and quickly re-enter the base by this passageway."
Crystal looked down the corridor and noted a young man in a blue uniform stepping past Commander Tan. He wasn't one of the medical staff so she had no idea where they had got to. Crystal racked her memory for the man's name, he was the new counselor she remembered that. "Ensign Harker, Harper." She corrected herself. "The very person, Councillor Tereth and Doctor James McKenna are still being held prisoner I am sure they would value your presence." She was unware that she was babling slightly and equally unaware that a cut on the side of her face had started to seep blood again.
Tag: Ensign Harper, - Crystal is fine with Counselors don't worry about that, she just has a tendency to let duty come before her personal needs.

Steve was looking around the surrounding area and fully taking in the mess that had been made of his crewmembers. The sight of their destroyed bodies sickened him. He had never seen bodies in this bad a state before. To the outside observer, it may seem like Steve just didn't care about the deaths and mutilations of his crew, but on the inside Steve was close to losing his lunch, and every other meal from the day so far. It was only his determination and resolve to make sure he didn't appear weak in front of anyone that prevented him from doing so. As a Starfleet captain, he had to show he was still in control, even if he was on the verge of losing it.
Turning round, he saw Crystal approach him, looking a bit worse for wear. She was covered in blood.
"Crystal Rose reporting back in for duty, sir." Crystal said as she stood next to Steve.
Steve looked down at Crystal and placed a hand on her shoulder. "Boy, am I glad to to see you. For a while we thought the worst." He replied, taking a deep breath before continuing, "What's the situation back there?"
"The Councillor and Doctor James McKenna, a federation scientist are still being held. I should think they know I'm gone by now. I would suggest that we regroup and quickly re-enter the base by this passageway."
Steve nodded in agreement and made his way back down the corridor to David's position. Upon arrival, he walked up to David.
"So, we have the top level command crew back together. It's time to end this once and for all. If we are to rescue the rest of the captives then we will need to be quick and precise.....any suggestions anyone?"

David arrived back as Crystal was de-activating the final mine. She acknowledged Tan as she walked to the CO.
"Crystal Rose reporting back in for duty, Sir."
"Welcome back Commander." Steven said, looking back down the tunnel his First Officer had come from ...
Tan moved to the bodies, or to be precise, to what was left of the three Officers that had taken the full blast as two of the remote devices had exploded at point-blank range. Resisting the urge to retch, he knelt next to the first torso. Once he was sure who the man was, he moved to the next body, a female Security Officer who Tan had spoken to once or twice during her time aboard the Olympia. He scanned each of the bodies with a tricorder before returning to the Commodore.
"...... op level Command crew back together. It's time to end this once and for all. If we are to rescue the rest of the captives then we will need to be quick and precise..... Any suggestions anyone ?" the Commodore was saying as Tan neared.
The two remaining Security staff were further down the corridor, scanning in both directions, when one suddenly whispered ..
"We're about to have company Sirs !"
Tan picked up one of the discarded hand phasers, wondering briefly if it still worked after being subjected to such a destructive force. But he didn't have time to ponder the idea, as four men came around the corner at a dead run. it was obvious that they didn't expect to come across half a dozen Federation Officers, and had no time to raise any alarm as they were hit by multiple phaser shots.
"We need to leave." the Security Officer said, stating the obvious as he kicked one of the unconscious mens weapons out of arms reach.
"We can't go yet." Crystal said, "We need to get James out."
Tan looked at the Commodore. it was going to be his call as to whether they left now, blowing the arsenal as a delaying tactic, or to go deeper into the tunnel system to free Crystals friend ..........

David shrugged, scanning the area yet again.
"It's your call Commodore." he said, glancing back the way they had come.
"How far to your friend Commander ?"
< tag : Crystal >
"ONLY two hundred meters eh. With god knows how many rebels between there and here .. We're approximately one hundred meters from the weapons cache, and another three hundred to the beam-out point." Tan said, trying to give his CO all the relevant information, "I can't see the rebels thinking we'll leave without our people, but then again, would they seriously expect us to go 'back' into this cave system ?" he finished with yet another shrug.
"Rock and a hard place." Steven said quietly, causing David to grin broadly, "OK .... We go after the others."
David re-configured the tricorder he had taken from one of the casualties. Making sure he could spot anything out of the ordinary, he moved forward. Silently signaling the remaining Security Officer to cover their backs.
"Harper, you stay close to the Commander." Tan ordered, then making it plain that the Commodore wasn't going to get the chance to walk onto the wrong end of a phaser shot, he began to move down the tunnel.
They had gone approximately twenty meters, when Tan realized something .. In the light of the tunnels, they were almost sitting ducks. The rebels didn't need to come after them, they could simply wait around a suitable curve and shoot them on sight.
Altering the level on his phaser, Tan held a finger to his lips, signaling, hopefully, for everyone to remain quiet once he acted. He looked along the roughly pinned cabling that joined the crude lights together. Then choosing a suitable point, fired ..
The tunnel, for as far as everyone could see, was now in complete darkness ..
"Even's the odds a little." he said with satisfaction, before moving forward again, the tricorder showing the way ..........

"How far to your friend Commander ?" David asked
Crystal thought for half a second, she knew she hadn't come the direct route but she'd studied the map that was stored in the scanner. "About two hundred meters on the most direct route. Can't guarentee that that'll be clear though. It's not just James, Councillor Tereth is still there. The conference needs him to be able to go ahead."
She waited for the Commodore's orders although part of her was debating charging back in to the complex. It would probably get her killed though. Another part of her wondered if she was somehow channelling her predecessor as the idea of a military charge seemed most out of character for her.

"...... It's not just James." the Executive Officer said, "Councillor Tereth is still there too. The conference needs him to be able to go ahead." David looked at the Commodore. Steven nodded his consent to continue. "So we are looking for two people then." Tan whispered, moving forward. It was beginning to occur to David, that traversing a two hundred meter stretch of cave tunnel in complete darkness was going to take some time .. More time than it would take the rebels to make some sort of makeshift repairs to the lighting at least. And the last thing he wanted was to be caught in the open if the lights came back on suddenly. Moving slowly forward, Tan reached up to grab the loose wiring that ran between the lights, pulling downward slowly until the connection gave way. Holding up a hand to signal 'halt' he scanned the tunnel ahead again. Twenty five meters ahead it split into two, the left hand tunnel continuing into the distance, while the right seemed to extend for only a further thirty meters, with several rooms off either side. "To the right. That's the storage area where we were kept." Crystal whispered over his shoulder, almost making him jump. Tan was about to reply when three bio-signs appeared on the tricorder ... Rebels ... Putting a finger to his lips, then pointing to the tricorders' read-out, David crouched down, sliding his back down the tunnel wall, motioning for the others to follow suit ... He was heading down the tunnel first purely because of his 'experience' but it was beginning to worry him that they were getting too far into the cave system. The transport point was some distance back the way they had come, and with the rebels hunting them down in force, it was only going to be a matter of time before they would need to either leave, or find themselves in the middle of a fight they had zero hope of winning .......... < tag : Crystal / Steven / ALL >

Moving down the tunnel, tricorder held in one hand, phaser, on heavy stun, in the other, David watched the three rebels intently.
They were stood close to the doorway the Star fleet Officers needed to access, and if they didn't move soon, the now 'rescue' team would be left with little choice but to fight. That in itself could raise the alarm to their location, so Tan was hoping for a little good fortune .. It came minutes later ..
Still in complete darkness, the team were now less than twenty meters from the door. Close enough so they could hear the order for two of them to move to another search area, leaving potentially just one to deal with. The three rebels talked among themselves for a moment before deciding which was to remain at the door, then David watched the tricorder read-out as the other two moved away.
Moving as close as possible to his Commanding Officer and Exec' he pointed to the small screen on the tricorder.
"Two men have moved away." he whispered, "I'm reading two life-signs inside the room, so that must be the Councillor and your friend James."
"Yes." Crystal answered.
"OK." Tan said, motioning toward the Security Officer to move forward. A moment later they heard a dull thud, then the Lieutenant returned. They were about to move when Tan held up a hand.
"Wait."
"David ?" the Commodore queried ... Tan hesitated, wondering if his mind was working overtime, but he had experience of these kind of situations, and decided it was best to voice his concerns.
"There's something not right here ..." he said, getting everyones full attention, "Look ... These tunnels are practically swarming with rebels looking for us. I'm finding it hard to believe that we've not been discovered before now."
"We've been lucky ?" the Security Officer whispered, peering back into the darkness.
"I don't believe in luck." Tan said, silent for a few seconds, before shrugging the feelings to one side, he retrieved his phaser and tricorder before pointing to the doorway, "Somethings wrong. Almost as if we're being set-up. But we've little choice at this point, let's go open that door and see what we find ?" he finished, looking to his Commanding Officer for a decision ..........

Steve had to think and think fast. In order to rescue the remaining hostages, it would mean going through a large rebel force that seemed to be lying in wait for them. On the other hand, they could just walk away now that Crystal had been recovered....but that would mean leaving the hostages to their fate, which would most certainly be death. That was something that Steve was not prepared to do. He had never run away from anything before, and he had no intention of doing so now, whatever the odds of success were.
'Im going to need some serious time-out after this' He thought, silently cursing his return to active duty.
Turning to David and Crystal he adjusted his phaser. "Everyone make sure we are all set to go. No looking back. We need to get in and out as quickly as we can."
Steve allowed a few moments for everyon to get ready. "Ok.....let's move."

Security Officer Ensign Mara Connark (Bridge - USS Olympia)
Mara was a little annoyed after her last brush with trouble planetside the CTSO had seen fit to assign her to bridge duty while most of the other security officers on shift were down looking for the FO.
Still at least it was quiet and no one was shooting at her. Her console chirped. She looked over at Lieutenant Williams, "Shuttle approaching, sir, reads as a starfleet transport."
Lieutenant Graham Williams turned his head when the TSO spoke. "Hail them, Ensign."
"Shuttle this is USS Olympia, please identify yourself."

The Commodore and First Officer moved across the tunnel, each staying as close as possible to the wall either side of the rusted door.
The Security Officer had edged his way back along the tunnel, covering the meager exit route, Tan moved forward, past the door, tricorder scanning as far as possible. Once he was satisfied, he signaled the CO.
Nodding to Crystal, the Commodore pulled back the metal bolt that was securing the door. Tan almost cringed as the rusted metal scraped along the hasp, the metal on metal screech seemingly traveling the length of the tunnel with ease. Once the bolt was fully back, he took a deep breath, looking at his Officers. Both Crystal and David now had their phasers trained on the doorway ready.
With the door hinged at Steven's side, it would mean that the Exec' would enter the room first. She readied herself for the move ..
Tan signaled that there was still only two life-signs showing inside the room and Steven pulled the door open as slowly as possible. Once wide enough, Tan re-scanned as someone whispered ..
"Hello .. Who's there ?"
In the almost complete darkness, Tan could make out two people stood at the back of the room ..........

Remar sat back in the command chair of the shuttle. When he had boarded the ship at Starbase Conqueror, he had noted it was named the USS Twain, but the Vulcan didn't understand the reference. 15 minutes into the flight, curiousity got the best of him and he looked it up. Mark Twain, ancient human comedian. Obviously someone's idea of a joke back on the Starbase, assigning a shuttle name Twain to a Vulcan.
Remar had just finished reading the downloaded logs of the Olympia's present mission. It sounded like a mess and he wondered what his contribution could possibly be, a particularly devastating course correction, perhaps?
Remar accessed the library computer and pulled up records on the Galfar system. Six planets, the second one was the only one habitable. No moons. Galfar One was too close to the systems sun to be habitable. The other 4 were gas giants. The system also had a dense asteroid field between the fourth and fifth planets.
Galfar II was fairly advanced, and Remar had decided to try to enter the system in a relatively discrete fashion. He had programmed the shuttle to come out of warp at the limits of Galfar's gravity at 90 degrees to the ecliptic, so that when he came out of warp, he would be looking down at the entire system and so be able to figure out the best way to get to the Olympia. In fact, he was coming out of warp in 3,2,1...
The rainbow colours of warp speed faded to the bright stars of open space. Remar rotated the shuttle so that he was looking down at the system and initiated a passive scan. He could see the Olympia in geo-stationary orbit around Galfar II. There were a number of other ships in orbit, and Remar assumed they were local defence forces. Didn't appear hostile, but the Olympia's shields were up. Not a good sign.
The navigation officer quickly plotted an intercept course to the Olympia and pushed the impulse engines to maximum. The Twain quickly closed the distance to the Olympia.
The sensor panel beeped and Remar glanced down. Two small ships had appeared from behind the third planet in the system and seemed to be manuvering to intercept him. Remar sent a scan their way. The two ships appeared to be large shuttles with a crew of 10 or so each. They were armed and shielded heavily. Remar knew from his log review that things weren't going well on the surface, and he doubted that the Olympia would be able to leave orbit to help him.
Remar shook his head. The ships coming his way were better armed, but looked slow and cumbersome. He put up his shields and activated the weapons systems as the distance closed. The Twain's sensors indicated that the two ships were running power to their weapons.
As he got within weapons range, Remar cut power to weapons and transferred the excess to shields and the inertial dampers, then turned the Twain hard to starboard, the plotted a parabolic course around the shuttles. Their weapons fired, but the manuver broken their weapons lock and the phaser shots went wide.
Remar put the engines to maximum and added a series of dogleg turns to his course. The shuttles got several more shots away, but only one hit the rear deflectors, causing little damage. The speed of the Type 9 shuttle quickly carried him out of the shuttles range and they were too slow to pursue.
As he neared the Olympia, his intercom came to life.
"Shuttle this is USS Olympia, please identify yourself."
"Olympia, this is the USS Twain. Ensign Remar aboard. I have been assigned to the ship as you CNO, and it would be pleasant if you would allow me to dock my shuttle before I am attacked again." Remar replied.
There was a brief pause, then the voice came through space again. "This is Lt. Williams. Close to within 500 metres of the Olympia, and we will extend shields around you, then you can dock in shuttle bay 1. We can't risk lowering them right now. Once you're aboard, come to the bridge."
"Affirmative" Remar said and quickly manuvered the shuttle closer to the Olympia. The shields of the larger ship came out to greet him. Once inside their protection, Remar landed the shuttle, stepped off and made his way to the bridge of the Olympia.
