Raltorr watched in despair as the Warbird loomed large in the viewscreen, he could see the disuptors powering up. Cycling through their lightining fast charge up the glow green becoming brighter and brighter. He had failed...
He nearly screamed with joy as he felt the tell tale pull of a transporter on his internal organs, trust the weak minded federation to come to his aid. He would be safe. He was plunged into darkness and confusion clouded his mind. He couldnt see anything and definetly not the expected transporter pad of a federation vessel. He could hear though. There was bleeping and some foriegn kind of talking. He assumed his sub dermal translator had failed. He knew he wasnt hearing romulan speech.
He tried to get up and frowned as he gained no sensation from his lower body. As he focused on the action a dull pain began to rise intently through him reaching agonising levels. He wanted to call out scream but nothing happened, his mouth never moved all he could do was lie and listen and try and blot out the unimaginable pain. Through it all he thought he heard the sound of someone vommiting.
Ensign Lomax, assistant Transporter Operator straightened and wiped his mouth, unsteadily and warily he took a second glance at what had been transported aboard. It had the vague form of a person but that was it. The legs were missing at the knees, as if severed by a laser. One hand was fused to the abdomen whilst the other, free and waving now ended in a fleshy mass which might once have been a hand. The face was worse still. There were no eyes and the nose and ears oddly in the right general location. the mouth was fused slightly so that only the smallest gap appeared.
Yes they had Raltorr... but was he really Raltorr anymore?

Valad observed the display of Romulan arrogance and violence as the S'Harien fired on the shuttle. The disruptor beams shot through the shuttle and the shuttle began to break apart.
Meanwhile, as the Jefferson dropped out of warp, Valad did as he was ordered and made the attempt to transport the coward to the Jefferson. It was a weak signal and he was not entirely sure if the systems would lock on. In a last ditch effort, he initiated the transport. The shuttle exploded and the Jefferson and S'Harien now held position against each other, a pile of debris of the bow.
"Lieutenant, were you able to recover Raltorr?" the Captain inquired.
Valad looked down at the console and let out a sigh. "Yes sir. But his life signs are fading. I'm having a medical team sent to the transporter room."
(any medical individual in Sickbay can respond)
Valad once again looked at the screen at the S'Harien looming in front of them. "Orders?" he said directed to the Captain and First officer.

ooc: JP between myself and Ambassador Tedak
Taev almost jumped in excitement as the Commander ordered him to destroy the shuttle. He brought down his hand on the trigger and opened fire. The disruptor beams shot through the shuttle. Within seconds, the shuttle exploded, leaving behind a pile of debris.
Taev then spoke to Commander Echal. "The shuttle has been destroyed."
(Echal)
Tedak looked on in horror as the shuttle disintegrated. He whirled around, glaring at Echal and Lhoell. "You didn't have to kill him," he gasped, "he should've been tried. Captain Reynolds would've turned him over to us. Now, our only hope lies with this prisoner of theirs. What if there are more samples of this toxin? Safely hidden away until he is once more free to get at them?"
He shook his head in disgust. "Killing him was senseless, he was a source of information."
Taev looked over at the ambassador. "Ambassador, on this ship, the Commander's orders are supreme. You have no right to question his authority or judgement."
Tedak cast the junior officer a very dangerous look. "As diplomat, it is my job to gain a peaceful solution, without anyone losing their lives. He just prevented me from doing so. I have every right to question this course of action, and I will question it. Raltorr's death is unnecessary, and unwarranted, and I will make report of it."
Taev became slightly angry at the ambassador. "You have been on this ship for less than. . ." he trailed off, observing a beeping on his console. Damn. "Commander, the fugitive was transported onboard the Jefferson, just before the shuttle was destroyed."

There was no delay between the order and the action, just what was needed in a tactical officer. Almost before the final word had faded from the air, the S’Harien’s weapons lashed out at the defenseless shuttle. It was a beautiful sight... "The shuttle has been destroyed,” Taev reported with the pride only a Romulan could possess.
Not allowing the moment to be enjoyed, Tedak, of course, responded immediately. "You didn't have to kill him. He should've been tried. Captain Reynolds would've turned him over to us. Now, our only hope lies with this prisoner of theirs. What if there are more samples of this toxin? Safely hidden away until he is once more free to get at them? Killing him was senseless… He was a source of information."
Govan rolled his eyes as Taev replied. "Ambassador, on this ship, the Commander's orders are supreme, and you have no right to question his authority or judgment."
Enjoying the show, Echal decided to allow the little tiff, as the Ambassador glared toward tactical. "As diplomat, it is my job to gain a peaceful solution, without anyone losing their lives. He just prevented me from doing so. I have every right to question this course of action, and so I will question it. Raltorr's death was unnecessary and unwarranted, and I will make report of it,” Tedak concluded, completely predictably.
Clearly irritated, Taev started, "You have been on this ship for less than..." as his console began beeping, he stopped. His face did not look good... "Commander, the fugitive was transported onboard the Jefferson just before the shuttle was destroyed."
“WHAT?!” Echal sputtered, leaping from his chair. He’d been fine being a spectator before, but not now... Grabbing a nearby padd and throwing it into the nearest wall, Govan swore under his breath before leveling a glare at Tedak. If the Ambassador dared say anything, they may have been his last words. “Well, I hope you’re happy,” he snapped, spinning to face the viewscreen. “Hail the Jefferson,” the Commander ordered moodily, sarcastically adding, “Let’s see if you were right about Reynolds...”

"Happy?" The Romulan diplomat turned to regard the younger man, casting him an icy stare. "No commander, I am hardly happy!" He whirled back, pointing at the screen. "That is not a peaceful solution, and we'd better hope that they got him alive, so I can negotiate his extradition to us. They hold the cards now, thanks to your gunner's stunt!"
Tedak was livid, his reknowned temper flaring. "This is what your impatience gets you commander, and your reputation. Raltorr was so close to coming to us, but on the last chance he bailed. We don't know what condition he is in..."
The diplomat was angry, well beyond angry and he trembled in fury as he waited for the Jefferson to respond to the summons. "You had better let me do the talking commander," he finally spoke, his voice a little more under control, "damage control before you do more damage to the relationship between the Empire and the Federation. After all, that's what I'm here for, to make sure it stays solid. And Captain Reynolds trusts me...let me build upon that trust."

After what seemed like weeks the Jefferson had finally caught a break. This small victory brought a smile to the Jefferson's captains face, but he only allowed himself a moment of pleasure since there was still much work to do.
"I want to know the moment the S'Harien moves, I'm sure they know by now that we have Raltorr and Echal will not be happy about that," Matt said knowing full well that things would only get more complicated.
(Megan/Valad)
=^=Reynolds to Doctor van Breughel, Raltorr is in our custody and he is seriously injured. Report to sickbay at once=^=
Nathan sat up in his bed, Jayden already at his side, shaking his head. Nathan nodded once in silent agreement. "No captain, I'll not report to sickbay."
Matt had not expected that response and it made him rather angry. "Why the hell not doctor?"
"Because you banned me from the very place you knew I would be needed in. That and you have denied me medical attention, as I was a patient myself. I was already relieved of duty when you banned me. That's why not captain. I need rest, and I am taking the very rest you've resigned me to." Nathan didn't sound happy, even slightly angry, but it was clear he was resolved not to report for duty, and for once stick to prior given orders, whether those orders would be rescinded or not.
Nathan's words stung, but Matt knew that the doctor was right in his response. Matt wanted nothing more than for his friend to get better and if that meant allowing another to perform Nathan's job than so be it.
"Alright then Nathan, who would you recommend to attend to Raltorr?" Matt asked his anger now abated.
Hannah and Donovan. Though they lack experience, they can do it. Hannah will finish her doctorate in a few weeks."
"Alright, I'll get in touch with them immediately," Matt said before turning his attention on contacting Lieutenant Howell and Sergeant Jameson.
"And I'm going back to sleep captain. We'll be on time for dinner, I promise. The invitation still stands, I hope?"
"Yes, we are still on for the dinner," Matt said realizing that it was not time to deal with personal matters,"Reynolds to Lieutenant Lowell and Sergeant Jameson, you are to tend to Raltorr and provide all his medical care. He should be arriving in sickbay any moment."
"Captain we are being hailed by the S'Harien" Monica reported.
"Alright, put them onscreen," Matt said hoping to see the smug look on Govan's face.
"Tedak... I mean Ambassador Tedak, I'm sorry to sound rude, but I was expecting to speak to Commander Echal," Matt said surprised that Tedak was able to keep Govan quiet.
"Captain," the Romulan replied, inclining his head sligthly in acknowledgement of his old friend. "Commander Echal is right here, we are debating who should speak with you."
(echal)
"Either way, what may I do for you Ambassador?" Matt asked glad that he would be able to work with a friend instead of the idiot that was Govan Echal.
= after any response from echal =
Casting Echal an icy glare, Tedak turned back to face the screen. "You may assist us by turning Raltorr over to us captain. It is vital that we take him back to the Empire and put him on trial for the crimes he committed. In the interest of peace between our governments, I implore you to see the logic of my request. My government will not sit idle, if we return empty handed, while letting you have both criminals."

Not about to take being lectured on his own bridge, Commander Echal took a single step toward the soon-to-be-sorry Ambassador before the screen lit up with the face of Captain Reynolds. Saved by his Federation friends...how annoyingly appropriate...
=/\=Tedak...I mean Ambassador Tedak, I'm sorry to sound rude, but I was expecting to speak to Commander Echal,=/\= the obnoxiously arrogant Human Captain began.
"Captain, Commander Echal is right here. We are debating who should speak with you," Tedak replied, sending a sideways glance/glare in Govan’s direction. Wanting so badly to break the Ambassador in half, instead, Echal crossed his arms across his chest and took several slow steps back. He would allow the diplomat to handle this. After all, Tedak was their only chance of retrieving Raltorr, and Echal knew it.
=/\=Either way, what may I do for you, Ambassador?=/\= Captain Reynolds queried.
"You may assist us by turning Raltorr over to us, Captain. It is vital that we take him back to the Empire and put him on trial for the crimes he committed. In the interest of peace between our governments, I implore you to see the logic of my request. My government will not sit idle, if we return empty handed, while letting you have both criminals," the Ambassador replied, causing Govan to cringe at the use of ‘implore.’
<Tag Matt/Tedak>
He would allow Tedak to plead and cajole his way through this negotiation as long as it got results. He wouldn’t get away with how he’d spoken to the Commander on the bridge, but at least if he succeeded in accomplishing something he could limit the severity of his injury. His life was currently in his and Captain Reynolds’ hands.

OLD: "You may assist us by turning Raltorr over to us, Captain. It is vital that we take him back to the Empire and put him on trial for the crimes he committed. In the interest of peace between our governments, I implore you to see the logic of my request. My government will not sit idle, if we return empty handed, while letting you have both criminals."
NEW: “The S’Harien is not going back empty handed Ambassador,” Matt said, trying very hard to not get angry with his one and only Romulan friend. The crimes committed by Raltorr were done against Federation citizens and he would be damned if he let this murderer go off easy as well,” I hope you have Tevio Ch'varak in your brig Commander.”
Tedak wisely didn't answer that one. "Raltorr is a Romulan citizen and should be tried by Romulan law," the diplomat countered pleasantly, "you have his federation conspirator in your custody don't you?" At least Tedak presumed it was as there was no official information on the renegade starfleet commander being involved in all of this. And we shared the information on an antidote, didn't we? We were under no circumstance required to share it, or even return your doctor you you. I'm sure you're aware that one of you broke your precious treaties first?" He arched an eyebrow, awaiting reply while already knowing that Govan would be having words later.
“The doctor was acting of his own accord and while his actions were foolish and irresponsible, it was an act of misery and compassion,” Matt replied,” as for your Romulan citizen; he would be dead if it were not for our intervention. Either way you no longer have any authority over Raltorr who has requested asylum from the Romulan Empire and I have agreed to his request.”
Tedak sighed. "You know that we will contact your president, and request extradition of the prisoner. It will quite likely be granted, so why don't we save the hassle. You still owe me captain, I'm calling in the favours."
“You are most likely right and I would have no problem turning Raltorr into your capable hands since you are a man of your word, but Govan Echal is not. He is a brute of an officer who has made an enemy of the USS Jefferson. I cannot in good conscience hand over a prisoner that he would like to see dead,” Matt said pleased that he was able to directly challenge Govan as a man and leader,” wouldn’t you agree Ambassador?"
"He would be under my protection," the diplomat replied smoothly, "and I'm sure you remember Jombis? I did you a favour Matthew, you owe me for that. A favour big enough as I'm asking for now." He smiled slyly, knowing he was right. "I'm sure you don't want the details of my favour to well...get public, would you?" Not that he'd ever follow through on the threat, but he knew the bluff might be enough.
At the mention of Jombis’ name a chill ran down Matt’s spine and he couldn’t help but turn to his first officer who showed no outward emotion. Matt also knew that Tedak was right, he owed him one, but the Jefferson needed to get some answers. If Raltorr was acting on orders from the Senate or another Romulan faction, the Federation needed to know. His threat to go public with the Jombis affair did didn’t go unnoticed, but he was sure that he was only bluffing.
“Alright Ambassador, I will hand Raltorr back to you but not before he is attended to by my medical staff,” Matt said a bit defeated,” he should be ready for transport within twenty four hours.”
"I'm sure Commander Echal will want his senior physician to be in attendance as well," Tedak went on smoothly, "and you have my word that anything Raltorr may tell us, will be shared with you if it is relevant to our mutual goal. I trust that your own prisoner's statements will be shared with us?"
“There is no need for Doctor Sural to come aboard the Jefferson, my doctors are taking care of him as we speak,” Matt said,” and I wouldn’t want the Romulan Empire to dictate what I or Starfleet think is relevant. As for our prisoner, all information we gather from him will be directly passed onto your government Tedak.”
Tedak inclined his head in acknowledgement. "Thank you Matthew, however while I know you and trust you, others may not. I ask that you trust me on this, allow Sural access to the patient if it is required. After all, how knowledgeable are your doctors on Romulan physiology?" He smiled thinly but pleasantly. "I'm sure we can come to an understanding. What if I were to beam aboard myself?" Surely they wouldn't hold a diplomat hostage, certainly not when a captain's word was given that a prisoner was to be returned. Tedak trusted him, but he was certain Govan would not, and he was trying to appease the commander.
“Tedak as long as I’m the captain of this vessel you will always be welcomed aboard her. As for Sural, I will allow him aboard, but please be reminded that he is not to approach Raltorr without approval from the medical staff,” Matt said with a smile on his face. The twenty four hours would allow them enough time to get some answers from Raltorr and with Tedak onboard the S’Harien he would be protected until they reached Romulus.
"It is not a matter of welcome," the diplomat reminded his old friend, "it is a matter of trust. I will contact you in one hour."
"We'll be waiting, Jefferson out," Matt said pleased that this mission was almost over.
"Thank you captain. I'll be in touch. S'Harien out." The screen went blank and Tedak turned to face Echal, steeling himself for what might come next.

Ien though Matthew hated doing it, he knew that Tedak was going to win through diplomatic channels. He also realized that it would give him some time to speak with his old friend. Now that the mission was winding down, it would provide his crew especially his operations officer with the chance to relax.
"Commander Garrett, please coordinate with the senior staff about their duties in the upcoming days. The moment that Ambassador Tedak takes Raltorr with him, I want us headed back to Starbase Assailant. The crew deserves some R&R," Matt said to his first officer.
(Megan)
"Lieutenant Tavik, now that this mission is coming to a close I want you to take it easy until we reach Assailant," Matt said turning his attention to his upstart operations chief," I know that you want to continue to work but you need a break. Since I know you'll try to find a way out of these orders, I'm putting Monica on your tail."
"What!" Monica said surprised at her new orders," Captain are you sure that I'm the best person to do this? We can easily get a security officer to do this."
Valad quickly turned around in his chair and responded, "Captain, I assure you I am fine . . . "
"I'm sure you think you are blessed with super human ability but I assure you that you are not," Matt said," I was once as young as you and I wish someone had ordered me to take it slow. I also know that you won't take these orders lightly so that why I have ordered Monica to be your proverbial shadow.
"Superhuman? I was ok sticking with medical miracle," he muttered under his breath. Valad got up from the station and walked to the turbolift. He stopped at the door and said to Monica, "after you Lieutenant. Do I get my leash here or downstairs?" He smiled sarcastically before entering the turbolift.
Matt couldn't help but chuckle at his operations chief remark. He must not have known that Matt had an almost Vulcan like hearing ability. It had come in handy as a linguist. The chuckle almost turned to laughter as he saw his former assistant give him a look of complete displeasure.
"Alright everyone, I want us to prepare for the Ambassador's arrival, but I would like us to stay at yellow alert," Matt said to the rest of the bridge crew," I doubt that we will get anymore trouble from the S'Harien but we got to stay alert."

OOC: I think this is a good part to end the official mission regarding the Jefferson. The S'Harien crew is welcomed to continue writing on this thread or join us on our R&R thread that will be posted up soon.

Somehow, Govan managed to keep quiet during the entire conversation between Tedak and Captain Reynolds. Being called a brute wasn’t the worst thing he’d ever been labeled, but it was quite a challenge to stay where he was and not retaliate in kind. Yet through the blinding haze of his rage, he managed to see something quite remarkable happen: they won. Much to his shock, the Ambassador had managed to accomplish everything required of him, and it looked...easy. Bringing up Doctor van Breughel, talking about both their governments, the Federation president, and something called Jombis, and the next thing Commander Echal knew, the Captain was agreeing to return Raltorr to them in twenty-four hours, allowing Ambassador Tedak and Doctor Sural to come aboard the Jefferson, and it was suddenly all over.
And now, as Tedak turned to him, clearly expecting some sort of response, Govan was speechless...absolutely speechless... That was something that did not happen often. “I...how...” Trying desperately to regain control of his brain, Echal finally just re-crossed his arms. “So...we have to stay in Federation space for another day?”
Still grumbling, as that seemed the safest and easiest thing to do, the Commander continued before Tedak could reply. “Well, at least you managed to keep me out of it. I’d rather die than board that ship... You and Doctor Sural should prepare for transport. You’d both better come back with Raltorr, or you’re never coming back. I will be in my ready room. Centurion, you have the bridge,” Govan ordered before moving quickly to his office before anyone had the chance to say anything to him.
<Tag All>
Once he was safely behind closed doors, Govan just stood there with a frown on his face trying desperately to process everything that had just happened. How had Tedak done that? Captain Reynolds had been refusing the request, insulting him, and was clearly not leaning towards returning Raltorr to them, and yet something had suddenly happened, and everything changed. But whatever it was, Echal had missed it. So many words…and everything moved so fast. He couldn’t keep up…
Hating feeling so lost and confused, Echal stormed to his desk and accessed the monitor. Maybe if he reviewed the conversation, he could figure out what happened. He had to keep moving the timeframe back to catch everything, but when Tedak had mentioned Jombis, the expression on Captain Reynolds’ face had drastically changed. Govan must have been looking at the Ambassador at the time and had missed it, but the shift was unmistakable. He actually even looked at someone off screen for a moment before looking back. Yes…that was what had been important. Whatever or whoever Jombis was, that mention was when the momentum shifted.
A few minutes of basic research revealed nothing, which only intrigued him further. It would take time and access to determine exactly what Jombis was, and sadly, Govan could only thing of one person who could really help... “Echal to Lieutenant Ch’varak, I have an assignment for you. I want you to discover the significance of ‘Jombis’ as it relates to Tedak and the Jefferson. Dig up whatever information you can find, and then report back to me as soon as you have something, Echal out.”
<Tag Tevio>
~
Dor’vel had also observed the proceedings in silence. Ambassador Tedak was a competent and efficient diplomat, and he’d clearly had something on the Jefferson to use in such a situation. He was shrewder than he appeared at first glance, but that only meant he required further observation. Clearly, this turn of events threw Commander Echal, who after a somewhat muted and uncharacteristic response, had retreated to his ready room leaving Dor’vel in charge of the bridge. Somewhat startled by Govan’s reaction, the tactical chief nonetheless smoothly transitioned.
“Ambassador, Doctor, perhaps the two of you should converse further regarding any necessary preparation for your visit to the Jefferson,” Dor’vel suggested mildly.
<Tag Tedak and Sural>
Once the duo left the bridge, the Centurion returned his attention to tactical, where it usually was. “Lieutenant, continue to monitor the Jefferson, and keep our shields up, except when transporting. I want to know the moment they making any move.”
<Tag Taev>
As the bridge settled into its normal hum of work, Dor’vel glanced at the doors of the ready room. There were several things he needed to discuss with Commander Echal, but now didn’t seem like the best time. Timing was everything when it came to dealing with a person like Govan, and the last thing the Centurion wanted to do was make a dangerous mistake. Besides, in spite of Tamir’s comment in the turbolift about being trusted by Echal, Dor’vel could not simply assume anything, and so, he would wait until the right moment and keep things working smoothly until then.
