Crystal settled in the chair in the Captain's office, suddenly feeling very aware that it had been a while since she had slept and she was running on caffeine.
"I am going to get myself a tea, would you like anything to drink?" He asked.
"Just an apple juice please" she responded. Captain Smith got the two drinks and set on his desk before settling into his chair. It should have been a calm moment but there was an undercurrent to it that Crystal couldn't place.
"As I am sure you are now aware, our XO, Mr Wong has decided to leave us to return to his old post upon the USS Victory. I saw no reason to stand in his way, so I let him go. Now that does leave us with a problem. The Oly is under-manned enough as it is, and now we need a new XO as well. Myself and Commander Tan have been over the members of the crew that we feel are suitable for the position." The Captain rose from his chair and started to pace. He seemed a little agitated and maybe frustrated, both of which were perfectly understandable.
"You see, there wasn't that many choices to go through and it was a tough decision to make. However, after many of the choices were ultimately rejected, one stood out from across all sides." He stopped pacing and lent forward on the chair....."The person that I have decided to have as the new XO of the USS Olympia is you, Commander.....that is if you will accept the position?"
Crystal was puzzled, for a second there it sounded as if the Captain had offered her the position of First Officer on the Olympia. She glanced up and caught Steve's eyes. She swallowed hard suddenly realising that she hadn't been hearing things, she really had been offered the FO job. A waved of shock and dizziness spread through her. Crystal's vision began to dim at the edges and she leaned forwards and caught the edge of the Captain's desk with one hand breathing deeply she was not going to pass out. Not from this. The dark edges cleared taking with them the dizziness and the shock. Crystal sat back in her chair and caught the Captain's eye again, she hadn't said anything yet, this probably hadn't been the response he had been hoping for.
She straightened up and broke into a small smile, for a second all her doubts and fears melted away, she was sure they would return but as she replied she was collected and calm and willing to face the challenges ahead. "I'll take the job," she said.
Steve seemed to relax a little as she spoke.
The two of them talked for some time and then Crystal wandered on to the empty bridge (the panel and wiring had been replaced) and then into the corridors of the Olympia. She was tired but not yet ready to sleep. She was also worried, she had never really looked at the command track and now here she was, second in command of a starship. She had thought about maybe one day having her own lab but now that would wait. She promised herself that she would not lose her interest in science no matter where starfleet took her.
She hoped she was up to the job and all the pressure that would undoubtedly come with it. Oh yes and she would have to get a new set of uniforms.
