~ Mission 21: One Second of Eternity ~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Synopsis: In the sixteenth century, scientists and theologians, like Galilao Galilei, hypothesized that there could be multiple separate universes, each running a parallel existence ... In the twenty forth century, we have seen evidence that this is correct, with species from other 'realities' making their presence known. One notable incursion to our dimension would be Species 8472, who battled the Borg.
In one of those multitude of dimensions, a race we will come to know as the Vezi, had been attempting for many generations, to harness the limitless power of their Suns ... Using an uninhabited system, they began their final tests before putting their technology to the ultimate test !
But things went devastatingly wrong ...
The Vezi race had miscalculated somehow, and instead of a steady, unlimited source of energy, the Sun expended it's billion's of years' worth of life-giving matter, in a fraction of a second ... The system, along with all the most eminent scientists, scholars, thinkers, ceased to exist. The destruction of their experiment had set in motion a chain reaction nothing could stop. Because the explosion, so unbelievably immense, caused each neighboring Sun in turn to self destruct in the same manner, burning away beyond the atomic level in a minuscule fraction of it's expected lifetime ... In less than a minute the dimension had ceased to exist and the shock-wave still expanded. Traversing beyond any physical or natural barriers, to other dimensions, destroying the Suns there too as the blast eventually dissipated ... But before nature, time, divine intervention, could settle into some form of normality, multitudes of dimensions had gone, trillions upon trillions of life forms extinguished in less than a single heart beat .....
Is humanity, along with countless billion's of other sentient species destroyed, about to be handed a life line, a second chance, or was this some cosmic joke ... Douglas Adams once wrote a book entitled:
'Life, the Universe, and Everything'
But the phrase was less than meaningless now, as our own dimension was one of the first to be obliterated, ceasing to exist less than a second after the Vezi blast ..........

He had been back on the Raven, still stuck firmly in space-dock, for almost three days now, and frankly, the lack of information, let alone activity regarding Doctor Ahlan's Court-martial was beginning to grate on his nerves. It wasn't the fact one of his Officers was charged, but how long the 'Brass' were taking about getting it sorted out. He had decided earlier, after arranging for Chloe, the girls' teacher, to look after Bethan and Vanessa that he would go up to Command and go against his normal way of doing things by calling in a favor ... Leaving the ship he was walking across the dock when all hell broke loose. Klaxon's began to sound, people began running to duty stations, collision alerts were going out ... Torek slapped his Comm badge. =^= Commodore Torek to Command Center .. Whats going on .. Are we coming under attack ! =^= =^= Unknown Commodore .. What readings we 'CAN' get are unfathomable .. If they are right then there's one heck of a blast wave coming our way ...... OH MY GOD ...... The Sun ! =^= He looked back at the ship as the Comm went silent. He watched people running toward the outer observation windows. There wasn't many, but that didn't matter as most of those running would never reach them. The interior or the dock began to brighten, not much for the first few seconds, then faster and faster until it was impossible to see anything but white before the brain registered the seering burning of the eyes and optic nerve. Anyone 'outside' would have witnessed the destruction of not only the system, but should they have lived long enough, the death of the very dimension of space we occupied ... Carl didn't have time to think about his Daughter before oblivion took him. ooo000ooo Looking down, he could see that he was standing on the almost four kilometer diameter upper section of the seven kilometer tall star base forty seven. Looking back into the black, orange, red glow of space, with it's millions of pin-prick size Suns, each in turn seeming to expand, brighten to a white beyond white, before passing the ability on to the next pin point of life giving energy. He didn't see the need to worry about how, or indeed 'IF' he should breathe, because the vision before him took everything else from his consciousness ... "Exciting ... Isn't it." The voice made Carl turn ... He was looking at a man not dissimilar in appearance to himself, in fact it could have been his brother had he had one. He starred, almost mute at the man, lost for words, before turning back to watch, what, he didn't know. "It's the end." the man said, as if reading Carl's mind, a somewhat wicked grin forming as he continued, "Yes ... The end to everything as you're puny Human mind can understand it. It began roughly two hundredths of a second ago as you see time. Billions of stars, winking out of existence every fraction of one of those precious seconds." "Who are you. What is happening ?" Torek finally managed. "Oh you don't know me ... We have had 'dealings' with your race before. In fact, one of us made you Humans a kind of pet project if you will. Something he can play with when the whim takes him ... I should introduce myself I suppose ... I am 'Q' ... You are Carl Torek, soon to be non-existent of the Human race, and former resident of this dimension, which as you can see is about to expire." the man finished, pointing over Carl's shoulder. All space was white now, so white it hurt, but he could still see the yellow Sun close by in relative terms, but it too began to brighten, this though was different, because the reaction was somehow slowing down, everything was slowing as he watched. The very edge of the station began to burn away, but as he watched the progress slowed more, until finally stopping, but not quite completely. If you took the time to look, the burning was still progressing, millimeter after millimeter along the hull ... "Q and myself have entered into what you would call a wager, is that right, yes, a bet ! ... In a parallel dimension ... Far far away." Q said, dramatically waving at the expanse as if to signify the distance he was trying to convey, "A meddlesome race known as the Vezi have been experimenting. Their interferance in the simple 'nature' of things is what has caused all of this ... Now, I have wagered 'Q' that should we send a Human into the other dimension, he would manage to prevent the initial explosion, therefore saving all and sundry in countless, dreary realms from, well, death I suppose." Carl was finally able to think straight as he watched the unbelievable spectacle, and he managed to speak. "But if you are the 'Q' we have heard so much about. The interfering, childish, omnipotent busy-bodies of the universe ... Couldn't you simply click your fingers and fix the problem. Why risk letting us 'Humans' try, and possibly fail, and who would the 'Q' have to play with then ?" "Don't flatter yourself that you could have any chance of preventing what has happened Human. Picard managed to dupe 'Q' on occasion, but he's hardly the sharpest of us ....." "I resent that !" a voice boomed from nowhere. "Go away 'Q' you agreed to let me set the conditions." 'Q' said, looking into space, or what was left of it before turning back to Torek, "Right, well here we go ... You will be allowed to take your little ship and crew through the dimensional rift ... Up there ..." he said, pointing above them to what appeared to be a rent in space itself, "You will be moving in real time, their time that is, while here time will progress at a more sedate pace. But don't be too complacent while in there, because you have less than a second here before I loose the wager, and your dimension is gone for good." "Hold on, wha ....." Carl began, but was interrupted. "Oh. One more thing, under NO circumstances must you allow the Vezi to know you are from another dimension, if you do you forfeit the game and loose." 'Q' said as a warning before vanishing. ooo000ooo Carl found himself on his Bridge of the USS Raven-B ... The station was far behind them, and ahead was the jet black rip in space that would take them to another dimension. Less that a single second, and the fate of not only mankind, but every sentient race in this dimension at stake .......... OOC:
OK everyone ...... New Mission ...... You will all have read up what I have posted so far. If anyone has anything they need to clarify before posting feel free to get me on msn, email or PM ...... Please take it that 'Q' has got you from wherever you were and put you back on the Raven. (he can do things like that you know)
Right.
Please enjoy the mission, let's make it exciting and unpredictable as always.
Regards,
Steve.

Muted and anaemic, the lights of sickbay glowed in their rectangular prisons on to the biobeds. They were dimmed, lessened in their luminosity as to become comparable with the mood of those who worked there. Not many occupied the room, only a small group of nurses and medical officers milling about in a single corner, for the Raven remained coupled with Starbase 47.
In spite of their foreknowledge of Shooku Ahlan's departmental shift, and court martial, it was still a shock to them all when they'd learned the Andorian wouldn't be coming on their next mission - having been suspended from his duties on a currently indefinite basis.
Andae leant back, arching his back and wincing into the lights of the sickbay ceiling. Headache...
The biobed was none too comfortable either; he'd never been that happy with the sickbay facilities on Galaxy class starships. Occasionally he would experience flashbacks; relapses of memories of his academy training mission which took place on a vessel of the similarly set-up Nebula class. He'd collapsed into a coma and nearly died on one of those biobeds.
Of course, there'd been an entity haunting his head; inducing his coma, giving him visions of a world of symbolism and using its omnipotence to torture and terrify him at every turn.
"I need something for a headache..."
The nurse he'd meant to call to attention walked across the sickbay. Blakus sat up slightly, pivoting about his waist. "What would you like?" she asked.
"Well, anything," he replied, "Just to make the fuzziness go away." The bared lights shone on his face from the left, giving out no real heat but casting his face in a dark silhouette.
She slotted a substance into the hypospray, the light flickering to show it'd been loaded, and pressed it to his neck. Instantly as the injection reached his head he felt the soothing effect on his poor wracked cranium. Whatever had affected him was immediately nullified.
Pushing off the biobed, he slipped past the nurse with a word of thanks and exited the room. It was time to find Emily.
* * *
The mess hall proved an excellent first place to look; Emily was sitting by one of the window portals, staring out at the black expanse of space as Raven was now moored at an exterior dock. A reddish glow filled the mess, leading Blakus to surmise the sun must be emerging from behind this wing of the Starbase's metallic hull.
"Hi," he greeted her, sitting in the seat opposite and then with a start realising she hadn't turned to face him. Emily sat agape looking out of the portal, and around them the reddish atmosphere of the air brightened improbably in intensity. He turned to follow her gaze, not sure what could be causing such a phenomenon.
Red turned to yellow turned to white and Andae was blinded by the dazzling spectacle. No, not a sunrise; the star was expanding, on the verge of exploding. Everywhere, point sources inflated and burnt the retina with the power of a billion suns. It was said that when a star went nova it temporarily outshone its entire galaxy. It wasn't just said, Blakus observed; it was true.
"I don't... believe..." he tried.
Then everything started slowing, imperceptibly at first, but with ratchetingly increasing pace. Time dilation increased to near maximum outside the mess hall window, as if one of the two reference frames - one the Raven, the other everything else - was moving at a speed near c.
It was blinding, but Andae could hardly look away. Eventually he managed to drag his eyes asunder from the view and saw the rest of the room's eyes: they were watching too. One had fainted; another had futilely sounded the red alert. Others now dashed out of the mess altogether, edging as best as they thought they could away from the cataclysm. Surely it was inevitable; the universe was exploding, and the Raven at least for one, was being spared.
Then suddenly they were moving, although Blakus had heard of no procedures for undocking, and indeed it would be impossible as the entire station's bulk was operating on a very different clock to theirs... Still, sure enough the Raven moved seemingly of its own will, making turns and bursts of acceleration improbable or impossible given its thruster configuration.
Andae jumped to his feet. The engines.... the words snapped into his head like a loaded spring made to fit like nothing else. It seemed so natural to take it as his primary concern. "Come on," he tugged at Emily Mouring's arm, pulling her away from the table. "Come to engineering."
They stumbled through the ship as it lurched and rumbled, inertial dampeners not expecting the kind of manoevures being forced on it by the unseen hand of, Blakus suspected, whatever was responsible for this mind-numbing catastrophe...
Words and questions were scuttling through his mind as they came to a turbolift, Who of the crew were aboard? Where was the Raven going? What was going on?

The quick change from recon to all of the sudden leaving cut Aeryn's little vacation short. After having been thrust into things without even so much as the courtesy of a report irked Aeryn. But she would just have to shrug it off and keep chugging. Her little stint at the stakeout had almost grown on her. The idea of her job being sitting on her [word deleted] for the day quite appealed to her, but she knew that was not the way things were going to go.
Aeryn made her way to the temporary quarters to gather what meager belongings she had. They weren't much, consisting of a few sets of clothes, a small arsenal of blades of all sizes and her personal hand phaser, a data padd, and a small picture of a boy whom she knew to be her twin brother. Packing up everything, she grabbed the large duffel bag and headed towards the airlock that would lead her to her new assignment. Walking along the promenade of starbase forty-seven left Aeryn almost indifferent, was atypical to her usual demeanor. In any normal case she would be looking at the different vendors and the variety of items looking for new owners, but now she just walked on, not even glancing around her. Perhaps it was because she was now just trying to get on her ship, where she would become the Senior Marine Officer and more than likely end up sitting on her [word deleted] on the ship.
As she neared the docking port, Aeryn walked up to the long corridor. She looked down it at the air locked door at the far end that would open and reveal a new life. Suddenly, klaxons sounded all aboard the station. Aeryn almost turned and looked back, but thought better of it.
Not my problem...
She would soon realize how wrong she was though only for a moment. As she walked down to her ship, she saw a brilliant flash of light to her left. She looked, only to see the shock wave that approached. She didn't even have the time to scream out the obscenity she immediately thought before it hit.....
-------------------
Aeryn looked out the viewscreen. She saw stars. Lots and lots of stars. Something was amiss. She realized she was standing between two consoles, seemingly an ops console and helm control. She turned around in plain view of a man with five pips.
"I assume you are Commodore Torek. My only question is, if I am dead, as I assume I am due to a star going nova in my face, why have I been sent to hell?"

Looking around the Bridge Carl could see the confused faces of the crew. It occurred to him that no-one but he had been given the information, or rather, the heads-up, that the 'Q' were playing their little games once again. He assumed that the senior staff had been brought back to the ship, and was about to ask where his Executive Officer was when someone appeared in the middle of the Bridge. After a few seconds, the woman turned to him.
"I assume you are Commodore Torek ... My only question is, if I am dead, as I assume I am, due to a star going nova in my face. Why have I been sent to hell ?"
Torek grinned for a second realizing the woman was a new addition to the crew.
"Lieutenant ......" he said, after a moments' thought, "I am going to put your manner down to apprehension due to our given situation, but let's be clear, it won't happen again ... OK you are our new Senior Marine Officer I take it ?" Aeryn straightened before replying.
"Yes Sir. First Lieutenant Aeryn Tavik."
"Right ... I assume you have pilot qualifications." he said, receiving an 'Aye Sir' of confirmation, "Good well as a treat for your timely appearance, and our obvious lack of Bridge staff, I need you take over as Acting Helm Officer for the time being, to coincide with your assigned duties."
Without waiting for a reply he turned and activated the ship-wide Comm ...

"Lieutenant. I am going to see my Daughter ... You have the Con." he finished, stepping into the turbo-lift, leaving a shell-shocked Marine in the middle of the Bridge ..........

Thirty five minutes later ...
Taking his seat in the Command area Torek looked at the rift on the view-screen ... It was enormous, almost totally black, and ominous beyond anything he could think of at the moment. It stood out against the universe's version of Hell frozen in a micro-second of total destruction.
"Well ... May as well get on with it. Everyone ready ?" he asked looking at his Exec'

Everyone watched as they closed the distance to the rift, it's size growing until it filled the view-screen. Engineering operated with an eerie sense of temperance, as if the engine assemblies and fuel pods adjacent to the room had been arrested - with the sole purpose of preventing them from exploding. It might've been true, Andae mused; for after all, the Raven had been propelled in the direction of what'd been revealed to be a spacetime rift.
The reborn engineer could see it on his sensor display. Not in the visual, of course, for he had no easy way to see that, and indeed it was better to study it in terms of its physical quantities, and the ghost image it left on the sensors.
Ghostly, because, according to the Raven's standard scanning instruments, the rent in space and time barely existed at all.
Andae took a moment from studying his display to survey engineering. When he'd arrived with Lieutenant Mouring - whom had now left - the place had been awash with a manifest chaos, and what staff were present had seemed to Andae decidedly headless. He didn't know all of their names, their personalities even less so, but Andae had decided it was best to sweep in with boundless authority, operating on a pretense of having always been in charge of this engine room. It seemed to work.
"Listen up," he called up and around engineering, feeling a wave of nostalgia run abreast of him because of the similar addresses he'd made on the Victory. "We've just passed through the rift; engine demand is at 0.25 impulse, as you know. This being hell knows where... we may need more speed very soon, so get working on warming up the matter anti-matter injectors." He glanced at his new assistant CEO and nodded, "Obviously, these are extreme non-ideal circumstances... So focus, people. Focus!"
The officers all hesitated - some eyeing each other and appearing momentarily lost - before being hurried or hurrying themselves back to their duties. "Perhaps I over did that," the CEO confessed to his assistant.
With a slight smile in spite of the situation, Andae swept through to his small office space. With a shudder he all but collapsed to his desk.
Slowly, dredging from a long-disused part of his brain as pertaining to his knowledge of regulations, he found a piece of information to console him: he was only a cog in a larger machine; he'd just to play his part and everything would run smoothly, no break downs in the system would be his fault.
He thumbed at his desk's comm button. "Captain, this is engineering. To report, I'm afraid you only have warp two at best at the moment. More is on the way but we have yet to get the injectors functioning correctly; it seems whatever or whoever, boosted us along this dreadful path didn't concern themselves with giving the ship full functionality.
<Tag Torek>
Satisfied that engineering was running as smoothly and efficiently as it could be, Andae departed the room via a lower-level maintenance door. He twisted out of the room with a smile of temporary contentment and walked into the small ante-room. It was here he came face to face with their new region of space.
The window portal faced aft, offering a panorama portside along the graceful curve of the stardrive section. Deep grey, inanimate matter sat inert in quiet neutrality, and next to it was the eternal mindfunk of endless black space. The starfield; much denser; many more suns to be destroyed here (but then the engineer didn't quite know the scope of the task before them all). The most luring feature was - without doubt - the gently receding but incredibly luminous spatial rift. It was obloid in shape, and glowed with an interminable white that was a result of the exploding stellar matter from the spatial dimension they'd just departed.
Andae stared and stared into the night; palpable minutes passed. Eventually he grew tired of it, and as the rift shrunk to a nimbus he turned his back to it and re-entered engineering.

Watching the screen, Carl ran his last statement through his head again, '...... No point in rushing in ......' he wondered just what awaited them on the other side of the rift. He wasn't long waiting for an answer as the vivid, almost nausea-inducing colors finally began to subside, replaced by an almost gray black haze before he started to see stars coming into view.
"We've exited the rift Captain." Ensign Gesh, the duty Science Officer informed him.
"Very well." Torek said, standing up then walking past the Ops and Helm stations, almost to the foot of the view-screen itself. As if getting this close would give him some spiritual insight into what was coming next, but alas, no ... Nothing, apart from space not looking quite as 'black' as normal, "Make a long range scan the area first. In spatial terms, if this is indeed a parallel dimension, we should be somewhere close to our original departure point. Lets try to establish that first, then find us somewhere quiet. The last thing we need is someone stumbling across us."
Carl took his seat. He never rushed his crew, he didn't need to, they all knew their roles and got down to business instantly.
"From what I am seeing Captain, this dimensions' space is different on the molecular level than our own." Gesh said.
"What does that mean for us. Are we or the ship in any danger ?" Torek asked, turning to the woman.
"Not at this point in time. If anything it will affect vision mainly. We visualize at the four hundred seventy five nanometer range, but the physical make-up of this dimension differs, making us see slightly off-color, I'm adjusting the view-screen to compensate now ......" Carl turned to the screen and the view seemed normal now, rather than the 'off-color' Gesh had referred to, "There is a gaseous nebula point six light years away it will hide us from anyone straying our way."
"Helm, scan the nebula. If it's safe get us over there." Torek ordered.
He wasn't too happy at being limited to warp two. He had the distinct feeling that should the need arise for him to get the hell out of there, warp two wasn't going to be anywhere near fast enough. though saying that, should they fail to 'win the bet' it wouldn't much matter if they needed to get out and push .... Wouldn't matter at all ..........

As the Raven engaged its drive and shot towards the nebula at warp 2, Blakus coordinated his staff's efforts to at least triple the ship's capable warp factor. Feeling stressed, he banged the palm of his hand on the wall as he walked through engineering.
The problem was, travelling to the nebula at the current speed meant it would take the ship seven months to reach its destination. This needless to say, simply wasn't fast enough.
Andae then performed a rapid calculation, and realised he could get the ship to the nebula before the end of the day - if his staff worked fast and hard enough. Unfortunately there weren't many procedural booklets on fast start-up of a warp drive - at least, not in this particular situation - especially since they were in an unknown dimension of spacetime where a number of physical laws could be operating differently, or indeed be absent entirely.
He performed a short-range scan, accessing the localised sensors of the immediate surroundings of the Stardrive section. He analysed a single thousand-cubic-metre volume of space, then subsequently ran all the standard scientific tests on the particles and quantum field fluctuations within this volume. The whole process took about twenty seconds; it returned some quite spectacular results.
On every level, from the tiniest grain of dust down to the ill-defined chemical bonds of molecules - and indeed smaller - existed anomalous physical processes. Within these systems, they governed and were governed by what Andae would consider the accepted laws of nature, or they commanded other processes and physical quirks that were stranger still.
The way the universe worked, Blakus mused, it had to be redefined beyond the normal definitions on this quite otherworldly scale.
Trying to gather his thoughts, Andae searched out his senior engineering officers within engineering. He knew their names of course, but lacked the personal knowledge that could prove helpful in working with them. Despite having been an engineer before joining the Raven as first officer, he'd spent very little time in the Raven's engine room. Perhaps, he thought, it was because of some stubborn loyalty to the Victory's engineering. He'd disregarded the Raven's equivalent department. Until now.
"Ah, Lieutenant Milyanovichiskiy," he approached the man, the secondary assistant chief, tapping a hand on his shoulder, "I'm heading to the bridge. Have the assistant chief know I'll be back soon."
Andae made his way through the ship, down corridors and into a turbolift, along and up in blinding fashion to the bridge. His primary concern at the moment - as he strolled the upper deck of the bridge to the engineering console - was the effects the new physical laws might be having on the ship and crew (besides the obvious colour change). Having access to nearby science and mission ops consoles would allow him to cross-reference his findings.
"Computer, transfer engineering to bridge," he commanded, and the blacked-out console came to life in a bewildering flash of light and colour. His voice made the command team of Torek and Jamison turn.
Blakus nodded their way and before turning back to the display, told Carl the engines power capacity were being increased by the second, and that Lieutenant Tavik could increase the ship's speed.

Will had left the star base and returned to his quarters on board the Raven. He was exhausted despite the fact that the crew was suppose to be on R & R. As he stood from his bed and headed toward the replicator to order a glass of water, the ships warning klaxons began blaring. Before he could reach the door to get to the bridge, a bright white light blinded him for a brief second. The next thing he knew, he found himself in his former CO office with a few other crew members. He quickly went to a console and discovered that the Raven was no longer docked but was now, once again, traveling through space.
As he reached for his comm badge, the ship comm came to live with the voice of his CO.
This is the Captain .. As you may be aware we are no longer at Star base forty seven .. An entity known to us as the 'Q' have decided on involving the Human race in their little games once again .. We are to traverse the rift off our port quarter .. It will take us to a dimension existing parallel to our own .. Please report any essential crew absences to your department heads as soon as possible .. All Senior Officers please report to the observation lounge in ten minutes time with departmental readiness reports .. Torek out
Five minutes later, he was in the lounge with the few department heads still on board. The missing crew included their CMO who was still on the station and their CNO as well. Commodore Torek relived his "experience" with them and outlined the mission. When the Q&A moment was over, the CO dismissed everyone and they headed to their positions. When the lift doors parted, they both stared at the the rift on the view screen as they made their way to their seats. Will slightly noticed the Marine officer that vacated the command chair and made her way to the helm.
"Well ... May as well get on with it. Everyone ready ?"
Will check his readouts before answering.
"All departments check in and report ready, sir." he replied.
"Helm. Ahead one quarter impulse. No point in rushing where angels fear to tread."
Will found himself holding his breathe as they entered. It seemed as if no time at all had past before the science station reported.
"We've exited the rift Captain."
As the CO started issuing orders, Will stood and made his way to the tactical station that was currently being by manned by a young ensign. When he approached, the young man began to remove himself from the station.
"As you were, Ensign. Man the console. But if you need anything, don't hesitate. Understood?"
"Yes, sir." he said.
Will stood between the Tactical and Science stations as he listened to the bridge crew to their jobs.
"Helm, scan the nebula. If it's safe get us over there?"
As they awaited a reply, Commander Blakus entered the bridge and made his way to the Engineering station and shortly after, informed them that they could increase their speed.
"Sir?" Will heard the security ensign whisper his way.
"What is it, Ensign." Will asked as he approached.
"Weapons, sir." came his answered accompanied by a nod toward the console. Will took a look and quickly understood what he was seeing. As XO, one of the first things Will over looked when they returned to base was the replenishment of the weapons. He knew it had been done but now their phaser banks read half full and their compliment of torpedoes was down to three. I hope we don't need them for anything. he thought as he informed the Commodore.
After the CO acknowledge the report, they turned back as helm began her report.

Calli had been informed she would not be leaving the ship as scheduled. She had been in her quarters packing as Admiral Tetsutarô had now given her her next assignment ... The Raven being plucked from Star base forty seven and all but thrown into this rift, put a damper on that ...
Still without a Science Officer, Torek had assigned her to the role on a temporary basis. She watched the readings intently as the ship headed for the hoped safety of the nebula. She was surprised at the inconsistencies given they were in a parallel dimension. Star charts didn't match up, sometimes the discrepancy was minimal, but other measurements made by the ship were so far out as to cause problems. Astrometrics wasn't her strongest point, but she was managing to figure out 'where' in this dimension, they were. Carl had requested a probe be made ready, they would launch this before going into hiding.
"Class five probe is ready Captain." Calli informed Torek.
"Launch now then."
"We are entering the nebula now." Aeryn said.
The screen changed to vivid purple and blue as the ship entered the anomaly. The duty Tactical Officer informed them that sensors and shields were being affected. Calli concentrated on the readings coming back from the medium range probe ... She was concentrating so hard she didn't see the small vessel suddenly closing on the Raven until it was almost too late.
"SHIP ... Mark two six four ... Closing ... It's locking weap .....!"
"Raise shields !" the Exec shouted, jumping from his seat. But the ship had fired. The beam of energy crossed the gap between the two ships in less than a second and lanced into the outer hull plates. At least two sets of living quarters, and as yet an unknown number of personnel, vanished in the explosion. The second shot bounced off the shields, but only barely. The attacking vessel wasn't waiting around to get a third shot. It was a fraction the size of the massive Galaxy Class ship, almost a gnat to a puma, and was running while it had the chance.
"Get damage reports, Bring us about, we must not allow that ship to get any sort of message out !" Torek said, knowing what he needed to do.
The ship almost stood on the port edge of the saucer section as it spun to face the tiny ship fleeing from her grasp, then at full impulse closed the gap quickly ... Lieutenant Gace at Tactical couldn't get a positive weapons lock, but Torek told him to fire with his best guess ... The Raven's phasers lanced across the nebula, threatening to ignite the rare, exotic gasses, but failed to hit the minuscule ship as it darted from side to side in some elaborate defensive dance.
"Leaving the nebula Captain." Tavik said.
The screen turned to almost black as the ship sprang from the gaseous nebula. Carl didn't waste time.
"Get a lock and fire on that vessel !"
Within three seconds the dorsal array's Type X phasers had locked and fired, sending over ten kilowatts of energy smashing into the vessel's woefully inadequate shields. The ship vanished in a shower of atoms, dispersing within seconds until nothing remained. Everyone was silent as they watched the screen. All fully aware they had taken lives.
"Did they get a signal out ?" Torek asked Valenti, who checked the readings coming back from the probe.
"No Captain. They didn't get anything out."
"OK ......." Carl said quietly after a moment, "Get us back into the nebula. Deep. I don't want any more surprises."
"Aye Sir." Tavik said, turning the massive ship and heading once again into the once expected safety of the nebula ..........

The Raven cut deep back into the nebula, leaving trailing gases to reform around the rear of the Galaxy class ship as it displaced the particles.
Blakus was somewhat surprised by Carl's decision to destroy the intruder ship. Capturing or disabling might've been better, but then, he supposed, they hadn't had much of a choice. The smaller vessel had darted about bewilderingly, and with little time to react in a more proportional manner, the Raven had simply spread full phaser fire in its direction. Luckily or unluckily - depending on how it was looked at - the smaller vessel was destroyed.
It was fortunate then, he thought, as he worked the bridge engineering console, he'd managed to scan the vessel beforehand. And while fully aware it was usually the job of the science or operations officer, an engine signature such as the one Andae had observed was hardly missable from an engineer's point of view.
"Captain," he said, not turning from his display, "We got a good scan of the craft's propulsion system before it disintegrated; they're working with some sort of slipstream drive technology. Whoever they are, I'd guess they're a very advanced race."
Calli Valenti spoke from science. She'd somehow ended up on the ship along with a good many other non-Raven personnel, just before the cataclysm. "The Commander's probably right. Their other systems are particularly advanced as well; in all probability, the only reason we were able to destroy the ship was because it was a scout-type."
Andae nodded, pleased he hadn't utterly stolen the role of another officer - even if Calli was only temporary.
He remained on the bridge to continue his work, beginning by running every conceivable engine test that occurred to him. Simulations could provide useful data often too dangerous to gather in a real situation. Soon he found that something was irking him, rendering a wall in his consciousness and preventing him from seeing the heart of the problem.
"Engineering, this is Blakus," he called.
"Yes, Chief?"
"I'm just trying to run some engine tests, but the molecular differences here are interfering with the results. It makes warp drive seem impossible, but of course, we've been at warp..."
"Yes, sir.." the assistant confirmed.
Andae thought hard but soon found his attention split as something else arose in his head, "It's surprising to think we didn't see that scout 'til the last second," he said through the commline.
"It's small and we're in the nebula," the voice on the other end said, quickly adapting to Andae's new train of thought (which was impressive considering engineering's seclusion).
"But the Raven's had no problem scanning millions of kilometres in the nebula. Why would we miss this one? Sensor blinds?"
The Raven reached the core of the nebula, the last layers of gas becoming transparent and effectively peeling away as the ship slipped through them. Momentary silence fell on the bridge as they entered a region of lesser density very close to the cloud's centre of mass.
Andae turned, "Captain, we should take extra precautions to make sure we detect those scout craft early..." His throat dried up, and with a small measure of shock but greater understanding he gazed ahead at the centre of the nebula.
Scout ships came and went, pushing through the gas layers in and out from the centre. It was an active, almost organic hub of slippery silver craft; all of it operated around a large stationary object a couple kilometres across, shining with starlight reflected by the nebulous gas. It occurred to Blakus as he studied the sight that although they surely would've tried, the craft the Raven had destroyed hadn't needed to transmit a signal, for there was a true base of operations right here, perfectly hidden at the core of the nebula.
Jamison started speaking, "Captain..."
"We're being scanned," Calli spoke.
It was clear to them all that the Raven needed to depart the nebula, and with great haste.

Carl had sat in complete silence as the massive ship made her way back through the gaseous cloud of the nebula. Tavik began to slow their progress as they neared the center of the mass ..
"Captain, we should take extra precautions to make sure we detect those scout craft early ....." Andae began, but he fell quiet as the ship entered what could have been described as the 'eye' of the nebula. Ahead was a circular object, some two, maybe three kilometers in diameter and well over a kilometer in height. Hundreds of almost pin-pricks of light, ships, moved as if in some spatial ballet. Torek suddenly realized their error.
"We're being scanned." Calli said quietly.
"Raise shields ... Helm, back us out of here bef ......"
"Too late Captain. who or whatever was scanning us has locked weapons. The smaller craft are moving to intercept." Valenti continued a running commentary, "They are beginning to surround us."
"I've no clear path Sir. I need to halt our travel." Tavik informed him.
He didn't need telling. He could see twenty, thirty, fifty, then over one hundred vessels completely surrounding the Galaxy Class vessel. He compared their situation to a jaguar being stung by a wasp. One sting would go almost un-noticed, ignored by the much larger predator. But hundreds of stings would eventually bring an animal the size of the jaguar to it's knees ... He knew that the Raven had more than the firepower to rid itself of the swarm, but there was no way he would open fire. It would, could cause untold deaths should the nebula ignite ...
"Stop the ship." he said.
"Sir ... We're being contacted ..." the Ops Officer said, Carl nodded for the message to be put on screen.
=^= We are of the Kvarn Conglomerate. You will power down all systems and surrender your vessel immediately ... Failure to comply with this order will result in an ... Unfortunate outcome ! =^=
"We can disable or destroy the majority of these ships easily Captain." Lieutenant Gace said from tactical, but Torek held up a hand to silence the man while he replied.
=^= I am Commodore Carl Tor ...... =^=
Suddenly the screen lit up as almost thirty of the ships simultaneously fired on the forward shields. The bombardment lasted only two seconds, but it was an effective display... A single ship was no problem for the Raven, but thirty, their fire-power combined, evidently increased their power exponentially ... The shields had dropped to twenty one percent, before slowly beginning to regain power.
=^= The display of power was deemed necessary .. Be aware vessel .. You will not receive a second demonstration =^=
"Power down the weapons systems." Torek ordered instantly, "Keep shields raised, and find out what they used to drain them so qui ....."
=^= You will be removed from you ship now =^=
Carl turned as the sound of a transport filled the silence. Will and Aeryn began to de-materialize, then Andae and Calli, she was reaching for the science console as she vanished.
"COMPUTER ... LOCK OUT ALL ESSENTIAL SYSTEMS ... Authorization Torek Alpha Two Two Epsilon .. Confirm !" Carl shouted, and heard the ship begin confirming his orders as the tell-tale grip of a transporter beam caressed him, taking him from the Raven ...
On the ship, the computer recognized that there was no longer sentient life on board. Subsequently, it shut down all non-essential systems. The Raven became a distant cousin to a vessel over five hundred years earlier ...... The Mary Celeste ..........
~~~~~~~~~~
He re-appeared, in a pale blue room with white, almost clinical furniture. His Senior Staff were with him, each looking around the room. Calli had managed to grab the tricorder stored at the science station and began scanning immediately.
"There doesn't seem to be a door." she said, raising her eyebrows. But before anyone could comment, one wall seemed to evaporate to show a group of men. None seemed to be armed, but in Torek's experience that meant little, as one stepped forward and spoke.
"You are in Sanctuary ... We are of the Scienta Sect of our race. You will not be harmed providing you co-operate fully. First we requ ......"
"Where is my Dau ... Where are my people. I want some expla ......"
"They are here of course. As is your Daughter." the man said, waving to someone, suddenly Bethan and Vanessa ran into the room, Chloe, their teacher behind them, eying her captives with distaste. He picked his Daughter off the floor before kissing Vanessa on her forehead.
"Everything will be OK, I promise you." he whispered.
"Yes, they will Captain, you have no need to fear. They will be taken to an area more suitable while we have our discussion." he said nodding once again. Chloe took Bethan from him, then held Vanessa's hand before following a woman out of the room.
Carl waited patiently for their captor to continue ..........
~ The Kvarn Conglomerate ~
~ Sanctuary ~
(Brief outline)
The Federation exists in this dimension, but in a different form to the Federation we know it. This dimension has been split into 'orders' or a definition of a mans standing, his 'place' in society if you will ... There are three main orders in this dimension and are as follows:
Scienta Sect: These people belong to the highest of the sects. They are in control of governing the Federation and it's members, all development, research, and scientific study. They make all laws within the Federation.
Militara Sect: These people are the Military arm of the Federation. They carry out all aspects of Law on behalf of the Scienta Sect, and man all vessels.
Dwellers: These people, the general population of a planet or system, are the lowest of the ranks. Civilians who carry out all manual work on behalf of the Scienta and Militara Sects. SANCTUARY: Calling themselves the Kvarn Conglomerate ... Sanctuary was set up in total secrecy deep inside the Boricci Nebula, by disenchanted members of the Scienta Sect. Who, after many decades of trying to change the Federation, were driven out. Now, opposed to the research being carried out into a new form of energy, they have been doing all in their power to hinder the Scienta Sect. There is however, discontent, even among those who have been cast aside.
ooo000ooo
This is just a brief outline of what we are facing at this point in the mission. Obviously, I expect more details to be added as the mission progresses, so feel free to indulge your imaginations everyone.
Regards,
Carl Torek.
Everyone had listened patiently as their captor, apparently named Gaain, explained the situation. In a proverbial nut shell, the people of the 'Hub' were former members of the Scienta Sect of their race. They, along with members of the other sects were opposed to the experiments being proposed. The main aim, to literally 'ignite' a whole system to supply sub-atomic energy that would be easier to use, and in some cases, safer, than matter anti-matter reaction energy.
No-one on the Raven crew believed for a second something like this could be workable, and as their own dimension was in the process of self-destruction, it was a forgone conclusion that it indeed wasn't going to work. Several times he 'hinted' at just what the process was, but always seemed to fall short of an outright explanation. Then with little real information, they were left alone ...
~~~~~~~~~~
The crew had been discussing their situation when two guards had appeared ..... Looking round the room, they decided silently on who they wanted and Lieutenant Wedlerson, along with Ensign Tavik were escorted out. A third guard ensured no-one else left the 'suite' of rooms, and offered no reason for taking the Officers.
An hour later they returned and again began scanning the rooms occupants.
"What the hell is going on !" the Commodore said.
Neither man acknowledged his question as one grabbed the arm of Valenti.
"I said I wan ......" Torek began, but the blow he received silenced his question as he slammed into the nearby wall.
"It's OK Sir." Calli said, watching her Commanding Officer wipe blood from his cut lip onto his sleeve, "I'll go see what they want." she finished as she was led from the room ..... She had no way of knowing where they were going, but she guessed it wasn't going to be pleasant ... On that she was neither right or wrong ... They turned yet another corner, the labyrinthine corridors designed to disorientate her, until they reached a door. Entering she was a little disappointed to see a transporter pad. Being prodded forward she stepped on and a second later felt the tell-tale grip ......
~~~~~~~~~~
Materializing, she looked around the Raven's Bridge ...
Several of the Kvarn were trying, in vain, and obvious impatience, to restore power other than what the ship had done herself when she had detected the presence of organic life-forms on board.
"Welcome aboard." Gaain said, smiling pleasantly from the Captains seat, "You are of course familiar with the workings of this vessel ... I would like you to remove the 'lock-outs' someone has placed on the essential systems needed to make use of the vessel."
"Sorry ...." Calli said, adopting a puzzled look.
"No need to be sorry my dear. I obviously made my request too vague." Gaain said rising from his seat and closing the gap between himself and the young woman before him, "What I'm asking is that you kindly remove whatever computer blocks that are preventing me from using the Raven for my own means ...... NOW !!!" he screamed the last word in Calli's face, forcing her to involuntarily step back into the man behind her. But she quickly regained her composure and stepped forward, almost toe to toe with the man ..
"I'm sorry, but even if I had adequate access to do so, I seriously doubt I'd be turning the ship over to you, or anyone else, for that matter." Gaain's hand came up quickly grasping her by the throat and began to slowly lift her from the floor, "Going to ... Kill ... Me are ... You ... Not going to ... get you ver ..." she stopped speaking as her toes left the deck, the air supply cut off completely. She could feel consciousness slipping away when Gaain suddenly let her go.
Rubbing her throat, she got slowly, falteringly, to her feet then looked him defiantly in the eye.
"I would like to be returned to my crew now." she said slowly.
Gaain glared at the petite woman before him. Part of him admiring her courage, part wanting to rip the throat out of her for her very defiance, but part also knowing he somehow needed to get on the right side of these people so he could use their vessel effectively.
"Return her." he ordered ...
He could beat the information out of them of course, or at least try, as he seriously doubted anyone would gladly volunteer it freely ... He had made a grave mistake allowing the woman to bait him, he knew that now, but time was not on his side, even within his own group there were dissidents, and the massive ship gifted him was as far out of his reach as if it were from another dimension ..........
Carl had meandered around the room for almost thirty minutes. He had, he thought sarcastically, prodded and probed every square inch of the walls looking for a possible exit. Someone on the other side of these walls was likely laughing out loud right now at his obviously futile efforts ...
The door suddenly opened and Calli walked in rubbing her still sore throat. It was plain that her inquisitors had been less than 'delicate' in their questioning.
"You will come with us." one of the guards said, clearly aiming the order at Torek.
"Find a way out of here." he said to his Officers, not bothering to hide the comment.
~~~~~~~~~~
'This is obviously some sort of waiting game' he thought as he sat in the windowless room, empty but for a table and two chairs. He had been here for nearly an hour when the door opened ...
"Sorry to have kept you waiting, but I was needed on your vessel ......" Gaain said, "Unusual configuration that ship of yours, one I am not familiar with."
Carl sat silently watching his captor. Gaain was frustrated, that was plain to see, even though he was hiding it well. But impatience leads to mistakes, and Torek was hoping the man would make one ... What he did do surprised the Ravens' Commanding Officer to the point where he almost stood up. Gaain touched his temple, 'some form of implanted Comm device maybe' Carl thought, then one of the walls shimmered, becoming clear. There, Carl could see Bethan, Vanessa, and their teacher Chloe. The girls were being 'entertained' by a young woman while Chloe eyed her with suspicion. The wall was clear in one direction it seemed, as no-one in the adjoining room, if indeed it was next door, showed any signs that they could see him.
"Lovely children." Gaain said, watching the girls play, as his voice took on a sinister undertone, "It would be a shame to see something untoward happen to one of them, don't you agree ?"
Carl's heart almost stopped as the woman looked directly at him. Not in the direction of the wall, but directly into his eyes ! ... He stood and placed his hands on the clear wall, the woman following him as if the wall itself simply wasn't there, yet Chloe, nor the children could see him.
"I loath having to resort to threats Commander, but I need the services of that 'unusual' vessel of yours, and I need it rather quickly." Gaain said, the threat plain, "We have established you or that ship are not from here, but as to where you arrived from is too fortunate an opportunity to waste. We play a game here, winning dependent on a players ability to misdirect his opponent. Your silence tells me you are willing to see just how far I would go with my threat maybe ?"
Carl looked at Bethan, then at the woman, maybe seventeen or eighteen years old, both were laughing, but Carl knew he could be looking at his children's executioner ... Silently he went back to his seat and looked at Gaain.
"There are over a thousand people on my ship." Carl began.
"Well they are actually on this base, but please continue."
"You think murdering each and every one is the way to force me to act ?"
Gaain looked at him for a long moment before touching a hidden control and the wall returned to it's former opaque state. He walked round the table, placing a hand on Carl's shoulder as if he sympathized with the mans quandary. He touched his temple again and the door opened, two guards entered and stood silently waiting. Carl knew his 'interview' was over.
"Oh I think I will have gained your co-operation well before I need resort to killing your crew ... You may return to your quarters now."
"You know something Gaain." he said as he neared the door, "You went about this the wrong way. You should work on your 'Meet and Greet' skills a little more."
Gaain smiled at the comment.
"Maybe so Commander, maybe so ....." he said quietly, as if pondering the advice, "It doesn't distract from the fact that you have twelve hours to unlock the ships systems ... Or your children's minder will have to decide which one of them is no longer a viable bargaining tool."
Carl looked the man in the eye before leaving the room, a cold shiver running the length of his spine. In that moment, he knew Gaain had won their verbal game of poker ..........

Andae had been sat in the corner of the room, squared up against the harsh right-angles defining the edge of the almost cubic space. It had been close on five hours now that the senior staff had been incarcerated here, the only significant events being periodic snatching of one or two officers every half hour. The officers were usually returned in short order, looking mildly shaken but not physically harmed - except in the case of Commander Valenti.
The science officer slumped against the wall as Captain Torek was led out in her stead. Andae watched her; sighing and bending her knees and looking as if she might collapse to the ground.
"What happened?"
She coughed first. "They took me to the Raven.. wanting me to help unlock the critical systems."
"Oh, great," he replied. Thinking of nothing else to say - at least nothing that wasn't depressing - he returned to his brooding. The engineer in him wanted to find a way out, and he had indeed been ordered to, but he was going to wait for a moment before trying it again. There was little use in repeating what he'd already done - which was to run his hands along the smooth walls, looking for a crack or a hidden terminal or anything at all which might indicate 'exit'. Anything at all, besides the one utterly impregnable door which seemed to self-seal immediately after being opened and closed.
In his periphery, he saw Commander Jamison's fuzzy outline approaching. "Blakus, any new ideas?"
Blakus shook his head, yet smiled. "Not if you count suicide, sir."
Calli seemed to overhear, turning her head along the wall to reveal an expression of distaste. "That's a dark sense of humour, Commander."
Blakus shrugged. "Sorry." Gathering his thoughts, he thought again of their predicament, "Well if we could witness another one of these walls dissolving we might be able to think of something useful. I'd like to know how they did it, actually."
"Holograms?" Calli put forth.
"Hmm, possibly," he considered, "If that's what it was then we're in trouble. We've touched every wall so if they were holographic, we'd of course have passed through them. Each wall - " he paused.
"What?"
Andae smiled wanly, peering up from his vantage point at the wall-intersection to the ceiling. Of course, it was full of dazzling light just as before (except for around the very edges where the actual ceiling was just visible). The blueish room was apparently over-illuminated by the utter optical saturation from above. "We didn't consider up there..." he muttered in amazement.
So bright you don't want to look - it just isn't considered in people's minds, nor does it even exist for them... As Douglas Adams had put in referring to the rather extreme case of the people of Krikkit, often times - when inside - people don't really hold a conception of 'up'.
That wasn't even the most surprising part. Andae took his commbadge and threw it straight upwards; it disappeared in the haze of bright light, making not a single sound. It had to have gone through the ceiling.
Soon they were standing on the dull white furniture, balancing themselves precariously on each others' shoulders. Andae stood by the armrest while someone stood on it, with Calli standing on the man's shoulders with her head through the ceiling.
"What do you see?" Jamison asked.
Calli didn't reply immediately. She just remained balanced there, upper torso lost in the bright light and swaying slightly.
The sealed door loosened itself and opened, Carl stepping back in with Andae immediately being pulled out of the room in the Captain's place. The odd sight of an officer balanced atop another was just out of view of the doorway, but Andae suspected their captors would know of the 'experimentation' anyhow.
He was led away; darkness descended.

She had been back in the 'cell' for want of a a better word, for almost an hour. Going off her time with the Kvarn, she figured Torek would be on the Raven now.
"What ?" she said, as Commander Blakus spoke.
"I said ... We didn't consider 'Up There' ......." he said, pointing to the brightly lit ceiling of the room.
Within minutes, she found herself balancing on someones shoulders, Blakus and Jamison supporting the man below her as she tentatively put her hand on the ceiling, not that surprised when it went straight through as the Comm badge had done. Taking a breath she stood upright. From below she seemed to vanish from the waist up ...
"What do you see ?" Andae asked, suddenly hearing the door begin to cycle. He moved away from the corner of the room, one of the Security Officers taking his place quickly as Jamison took the full weight of the man supporting Calli. Torek entered and one guard reached into the room grabbing Blakus and leading him out of the room without a word. Carl watched the door close then turned to the group in the corner, eyebrows raised.
"I can't see how our captors don't know we're looking around for a way out Sir." Jamison whispered, altering his footing every few seconds.
"Well they haven't come running in breaking legs ..." Carl said, thinking along the same lines as his Exec, "So maybe there's nowhe ......"
He fell silent as Valenti suddenly vanished through the ceiling !
The man who had been supporting her fell off Jamison's shoulders and hit the deck rolling, then stood and looked up, raising his hands in confusion.
"There's no way she pulled herself off my shoulders Commodore, her weight was gone instantly, no push-off or anything." the man said, "I'd guess she was pulled up from above."
Carl glanced at the door before scratching his head ...
Above him, Calli had been looking round the space above the room where they were being held. It was a replica of the room below, but this one was obviously being used as some sort of storage area. Four, maybe six large square deckplates were stacked against the nearby bulkhead, obviously allowing for the computer-generated floor come ceiling ... She bent her head to tell the people below it may be safe to go up, when something grabbed her under her arms and wrapped across her chest, while a hand covered her mouth as she was pulled into the room completely ..........

There were hands holding firmly onto her. One across her chest, the other covering her mouth as she was pulled backward. Her captor seemingly slammed against a bulkhead halting his movement. She didn't struggle, there didn't seem much point, she figured they would let her go when they saw fit.
She could feel breath against her neck, then someone whispered.
"I am going to release you in a few seconds. You need to remain totally silent and assure me you will not try to move until I say so ... Are we in agreement ?" the man waited, then said thank you as Calli nodded. The hand fell slowly from her mouth as if the man were remaining ready to slam it back into place should the need arise. Then he eased his grip with the other hand.
Her eyes were adjusting to the darkness of the room now and looking around, she could see one other person with her captor. He seemed to be looking at the deck where she had been pulled through, and she realized he could 'see' into the room below.
"I need you to remain silent while I speak to you." her captor said, moving round to face her, "While the shield if fully opaque it is invisible, but alas it does allow any loud noise to penetrate." He turned and spoke quietly to his companion who went to the door and was gone.
"Who are you ?" Calli whispered, receiving a glare of annoyance from the man.
"I am Taarh ... I am one of the people opposed to the work being carried out here. We are hunted and executed if found. The Kvarn Conglomerate is doing right in trying to halt the research into a new form of energy, and while I agree with them, I'm afraid I do not agree with their methods ...... Now, in your ship, have a superior weapon, 'IF' they can access it, to take their objections to the home world system and decimate those working on the new fuel." Calli frowned, puzzled.
"Hold on ......" she whispered, then continued when the man seemed to be allowing her to do so, "So everyone here is trying to prevent the destru, the work, into the new energy source, but even here there is a group of people against what you, they, are trying to do ?"
"Essentially yes ... The Conglomerate is hunted mercilessly but those on the Home world know nothing of this base. Sanctuary, as it is known. We have done many things to slow the work, but several of us became disenchanted with the time it was taking, and began to use, less than honorable means ... We began to destroy any vessels thought to be carrying equipment, or personnel who were working on the new energy collector ... Innocent people, even children have died as a result of this wanton violence. It is known there are grave concerns that the research could be catastrophic for our system, and maybe beyond. But the killing of children goes beyond anything we would consider right !"
Calli remained silent. She had almost let slip the result of the experimentation a moment ago.
"You are going to go back into the room below shortly. I need you to inform your Senior Officers of what I have told you. freeing your people may be one way to prevent any more loss of innocent life. I will return when I can. There are a few things I need to see to in another part of the base."
"How do you manage to move about if you are hunted ?"
Taarh took a small device from his pocket and placed it over Calli's ear. A small holographic display sprang to life in front of her left eye.
"Look at the deck." he said.
Calli looked down. At first she could see nothing, the holo display almost one hundred percent transparent. But as she turned her head a section of the floor seemed to 'glow' with a blue green luminescence ... She looked up and around and the glow vanished, returning when she looked at the section of deck plating that had been replaced with the false floor."
"Nice trick." she commented, looking at the man, noticing the glow on the bulkhead to his right, "There too ?"
"Yes." he said without looking round, "We have these set up in most area's. They allow us freedom of movement, along with an escape route should we be pursued ... OK, I need to leave you now. Inform your Captain that with luck we can get him back to his ship. Sit on the edge of the deck plate and drop down, it isn't that high. Please do not allow the device I gave you to be discovered. It is our life-line. Go now."
In the room below, Torek was telling Will and Andae what Gaain had said, including the threats to Bethan and Vanessa, when a pair of legs appeared seemingly from the solid ceiling. A second later Calli dropped to the floor. She looked back at the hole, now illuminated in the familiar blue green luminescence.
"Welcome back." Carl said matter-of-factly.
She looked around the room, every wall, and the deck ...
"Didn't think we'd be that lucky." she said, shrugging, then turned to Torek, "I think we may have made a friend." she said, them went on to update the others with what had happened in the room above.
Above, Taarh watched her land then left the room ..........

Carl had listened intently as Calli had recounted her discussion with Taarh. He fully believed that there was more to their situation and needed a meeting with the man to get information. He had tried the device Valenti had been furnished with and could clearly see the one meter square in the ceiling tiles. As Andae and Will discussed possibilities, he handed the optical device to them and pondered the view above their heads. He wondered if his prosthetic implant would be able to see the force-field.
Taking a seat, he touched his left temple with his index and middle fingers. He could feel the sub-dermal implant that allowed access to his 'eye' beneath his skin. Watching the section of ceiling closely, he very slowly began to alter the visual spectrum the eye saw. It wasn't something he did on a regular basis, in fact far from being the wonder device available today, his eye was pretty basic in design. Allowing minor changes in frequency, wavelength and focus, and he hadn't needed to do anything but 'see' through it in many years.
Suddenly intense pain surged through his head and he released his temple trying to shake off the agony in silence. The last thing he needed was to be caught attempting to locate the force field ...
After a few seconds the pain subsided and he again touched his temple ... This time though, he altered the frequency in nanometers and winced as the room turned a vivid orange before edging toward the infrared. It was too much, and again he let the implant control go.
After resting for a moment, he took a deep breath, stealing himself for the pain. This time, he moved the frequency the other way by the smallest fraction he could manage, and watched the room take on a violet hue as he dropped below the three hundred eighty nanometer range and into the ultraviolet ... His head was beginning to ache and he was beginning to feel nauseous, but as he watched, the force field became visible against the rest of the ceiling, then as he dropped a further fifty nanometers, it became almost transparent !
"You can see it ...... Sir ?"
"Yes, but it's bloody painful." Torek replied to his Engineer, squeezing his eyes shut as the pain intensified for a second time, "There's no way I could keep this up indefinitely. It's down in the UV range."
"I think you should go up there and take a look around Captain." Calli said instantly.
"No, too dangerous. If they should come back while I was out of the room there's no telling how Gaain may react. Let's keep this too ourselves for the moment, that should include your new friend up there Commander."
"Understood Sir." Valenti replied.
Torek checked the chronometer above the door ... Twenty three forty hours ... He doubted there would be many people wandering the corridors in the middle of the night. he decided to give it another thirty minutes then he would allow someone to enter the room above. There would be no reason to keep that room secured, so with luck whoever went would have no trouble getting out, or back in.
He put the idea to his Senior Officers ..........

Cold....
The peculiar sensation that enveloped the air and any who fell victim to its reach hung moistly in the air. The moistness was alarming, making any who found themselves in it cold and nearly hypothermic. The only way one knew it was not cold enough to die was that the wetness still clung to the air. It was to these conditions that Aeryn woke from a slumber. She did not know where she was, nor did she have any idea what time it was. She could have been out for hours or even days. She held her eyes shut tight for a few more moments, slowly reaching out with all her other senses. Whatever space she was in smelled musty and damp, easily explaining why she felt cold and clammy. She heard the drip of water come from somewhere, though it seemed far off. She took a deep breath it. The air was stale. It seemed as though this place was not taken care of. Slowly, without opening her eyes, she tried to sit up, but hit her head on something above her.
"Damn it!" she yelled, in pain.
"Watch your head," came a voice from the other side of the room. She looked in its direction, having finally opened her eyes. She saw Wedlerson, the ops officer, sitting across from on what appeared to be some kind of bunk. He spoke again, "How do you feel?"
Aeryn winced, feeling a tender spot in her side. "I need a drink..."
"That bad, huh? Well I can offer you a glass of nothing, a mug of nada, and a shot of thin air. Anything appetizing?"
Aeryn appreciated his humor but could not use it right away since it didn't dull the pain. She looked around the room, noting the meager features that surrounded her. Two beds, if she could call them beds, lined either wall of the small room. There were no windows and did not appear to have a door. "Okay, how the hell did we get in here?" she asked, slightly perturbed.
"I'm assuming some kind of transport in," came Harry's reply. "I haven't been able to figure anything out yet. No exits."
Aeryn kicked at the ground, "Figures..." She stood and walked around the small room, touching every wall she came near. Nothing budged. They were imprisoned in a cell with no escape. "We obviously know very little about what's going on. So what DO we know?"
Harry, obviously having thought about this intently, immediately responded. "Well, we are apparently on some sort of station, I'm assuming in the nebula. At least the entire senior staff is being held captive, and I have to pee."
Aeryn scoffed. "Oh thanks for that. Really needed it." She let the sarcasm fly brightly. She sat back on the bed, trying to think of what to do next.
(obviously, more to come, but we'll see what happens next)

"I don't know, sir, I'm not sure it's safe," Andae replied slowly, watching his Captain for a reaction. He knew it was a slightly pathetic thing to reply with, and thought he'd better rectify it immediately.
Gradually he let out a sigh, wavering on his feet as he momentarily felt overcome by fatigue. "Well, ok." It was a startling change of mind.
Andae believed he was feeling indecisive; it was hardly a rare thing, but he supposed he'd better put an end to it. Others were depending on him. He began to think of his senior engineering officers and how they must be incarcerated in another part of the base, likely cramped in a similar compartment to this one. He wondered if they'd managed to find a way out themselves. How odd, he thought, that those who were opposed to the main force of the Conglomerate should be able to operate right under their wing like this...
Half an hour passed and the time came for another excursion into the room above. Andae promptly volunteered, much to his own chagrin.
The Captain had someone posted to the door to watch for any passing guards, while Andae was hoisted into the room above at the CO's direction.
Darkness; the first thing that struck him. Instantly it reminded him of the place he'd been placed not long ago. Dragged off, flash of metal cracked at his cranium and swimming vision giving way to sable fields of nothing. His eyes had opened to blackness and a harsh questioning from one of the station's interrogator/guards ensued. It took place not an hour ago, or so he would surmise.
Now this was a new darkness. It wasn't entirely black. He could pierce it. Forms of crates lined one of the walls, stacked carefully and systematically. He walked to them and as he did so, a figure stepped through the wall.
"Identify yourself," Blakus said warily, taking half a backward step.
The figure stepped out of its own silhouette, revealing its face. Neutral, not entirely pleasant but with a stolid determination that spoke of principles. "I'm Taarh," he said, and cocked his head, "Good. You brought the device."
Andae touched the optical device attached over his left eye; he'd nearly forgotten about it. He looked at the floor where he'd come through and it glowed with a wonderful shade of turquoise. "I'm of the senior staff," he said, returning to Taarh, "We've discussed what you've said, but we've agreed we need more information. This is all too mysterious."
"No," Taarh said, "There's no time. My tasks elsewhere on the base haven't passed off as well as designed. There have been complications and we need to move the plan forward."
Questions formed in Blakus's head and tried to voice his concerns, but Taarh was already pushing something into his hand. "This is a defensive forcefield, different from the ones installed in the wall cavities around us... You'll need it."
Two darker silhouettes stepped through the glowing wall behind Taarh and came to a halt, standing imperiously as if blocking Andae's exit. Fear entered the engineer's mind and he backed up again; now he felt a sure sense of peril.
"Stay calm and reenter the room below. Shield yourself in the corner, use the device to protect from the blast and try and stay away from this section of the ceiling. Inform your staff that we're getting you out."
"I'm only the engineer," Andae said quickly.
Taarh paused in confusion. "You're not the Captain? I asked for the Captain." There was silence... "No matter." He pushed Andae towards the hole leading to the floor below and it pulsated bright and green as it filled the engineer's vision. "We're freeing you all."
Andae fell through the ceiling and dropped, conveniently, on the couch. "Captain, we need to take cover." He quickly explained and had everyone gather in the corner of the room away from the ceiling section. Soon a high-pitched buzz sounded and Andae panickly activated the device he'd been given. It flashed blue; with little else to do he held it above his head and had everyone squeeze in behind him.
As the pitch got louder and more pronounced it became obvious it was coming from above. It built to unbearable levels and as it did so, the door to the room popped open and a quartet of guards rushed in, wearing grey overalls. They were brandishing guns, looking around, obviously wondering what was happening.
Andae wish he knew.
The ceiling exploded, fractallising as if constructed of a million shards of glass. The jagged shapes fell in a razorstorm of slow motion.

"I don't think we have much choice." Will said, after listening to his CO's idea, "Besides, that bloke could leave us sat here indefinitely, and it doesn't look as if anybody is going to be leaving the door open for us."
"So who should go ?" Torek said, pondering his options.
"Well Taarh knows me, he's spoken to me, so maybe I should be the logical candidate." Calli said.
"I'll go." Andae said, eying the ceiling.
"Commander Blakus is possibly a better option actually. They may well get suspicious if I'm suddenly absent, and they're not likely to want to speak to him again I'd guess." Calli stated, with Will and Andae both nodding agreement.
"OK, Commander, give him the device, there's no way I'm going to be able to keep looking at that shield with the prosthetic it's giving me one hell of a migraine." Torek said, consciously allowing his eye to return to normal vision setting.
Andae placed the viewer over his ear, the lens resting in front of his eye and looked up. He could see the blue green glow of the force-field and stood back while the furniture was re-arranged to allow him easy access, then as one Officer cupped his hands Andae placed a foot in the hold and pushed upward ... The man had lifted him in one easy motion and he was able to pull himself into the darkened room. Below the room was re-set as Calli watched the small window for guards ... All they could do now was wait. Blakus had been briefed to reconnoiter the surrounding area with a view to finding a route back to the ship.
~~~~~~~~~~
Carl was sat on one of the long couches that were scattered around the room, he was going over other possible options when Blakus landed beside him suddenly. Jumping to his feet he started to push others toward one corner of the room.
"Captain, we need to take cover !"
Torek, Will and Valenti all gathered without comment in the corner as a low whine started to increase in pitch. Andae checked that everyone was secure then activated the device he'd been given. There was a hint of an ice blue glow from the thing as the sound began to hurt. Apparently it had attracted the attention of the guards, who came rushing in ... They had no time to react as the ceiling seemed to fall in on them in a shower of crystalline sheets.
A ladder appeared from above, and as Blakus de-activated the shield they could see several people urging them to climb. It didn't take a second invitation ... Torek looked at the fallen guards, then as Calli climbed he followed into the room above ...
"We have little time." Teerh said, urging the Raven crew to follow his men, but Carl was suspicious of the ease in which they had been freed.
"We're going nowhere until I have an explanation. I have two daughter's being held by someone called Gaain. He has threatened to have them KILLED !"
"We will speak when we are in a safer area ... Gaain is many things, but I don't see 'child murderer' as one of them, believe me Captain." the man replied, obviously annoyed at the un-necessary delay to his plans, "We have located your children and they will be brought to you .... Now, the levels above were you were held are for the most part unused, thus our tentative freedom of movement, but our little party will have informed our friend Gaain of your departure, and he will be eager to recapture you I think. So if you wouldn't mind ...... Please." he finished, motioning toward the door.
They ran along corridors, unable to keep track of the frequent changes in direction. At one point they headed to a level above before returning to their previous level moments later. Carl could see that this part of Sanctuary was unused, either abandoned, or still to be completed, it was hard to tell at the speed they were traversing the corridors ... The man on point suddenly halted and pushed the first Starfleet Officer through the seemingly solid bulkhead ... Realizing it was one of their shields, the rest followed quickly.
Carl was the last to enter the room. Everyone was silent ... Bethan and Vanessa ran to him and he could see their teacher, Chloe, smiling in relief. He could also see the woman who had been holding them captive. She was clearly dead. Slumped in one corner of the room, her head visibly at an acute angle, neck broken. But that wasn't why his people were silent ... Through the large observation ports built into the far wall, he looked out onto the vividly colored nebula. Dozens of vessels were moving back and forth across the expanse. Given the enormous size of Sanctuary, almost two kilometers in diameter, it was ridiculous to think they had crossed the full width, or even reached an outer surface giving them a view of a different region of space outside ... It was glaringly obvious that they were looking at the same piece of space, were they had initially entered the inner core of the Boricci Nebula ... So ...
Where the HELL was their ship ! ..........
Aeryn sat alone in the cell. Her captors had transported Harry our nearly thirty minutes before and had taken him to an unknown location. They just took him with no warning. At this point she couldn't even think about what they might be doing to him. The whole situation was complete crap. She had planned on sitting on the starbase for two weeks for a nice R and R session. Instead, she was sitting in a cell, hopefully on the station of the Kvarn Conglomerate, having been sent to this alternate universe by a Q.
"I hate omnipotence," she said to herself angrily.
Suddenly, as if from nowhere, Aeryn heard the now familiar sound of the transporter and Harry materialized in front of her. He was lying on his back, for the moment unconscious. He seemed to be breathing normally and after checking, she found a pulse, though a very heightened one. Aeryn slapped him across the face. "Harry! Harry, wake up!!" He started to stir.
Weakly, he said, "Where am I?" His eyes were still closed and he was starting to breathe heavily.
Aeryn slowly replied, "You are back in the cell. What happened?"
Eyes still closed, he started, "I was in my office at the Institute when several armed men stormed in...."
"Wait!" Aeryn interrupted. "What the hell is "the Institute?"
Harry opened his eyes and when he focused in Aeryn, his eyes widened. He screamed. "Get away from me!" He crawled backward against the wall and away from Aeryn.
"Whoa! Harry, what the hell?" Aeryn was surprised at his actions. "Harry what have they done to you?"
"Why do you keep calling me Harry? You know what my name is you treacherous [word deleted]!"
Aeryn raised an eyebrow. "Seriously. What the hell?"
Suddenly, Aeryn heard a faint sound. It seemed so far away, but she could recognize it anywhere.
An explosion.(ooc: I would not like to be found just yet. Still some more yet to write about in the cell and I would like a little more time to explore it. But I wanted to get this up. More to come )
Several options for escape were being discussed. Calli was still counting on Taarh to help them. Certain things didn't quite seem to fit, but on the whole he seemed the best option to get out of confinement. She had a sixth sense when it came to trusting people, it was simple ... She didn't trust anyone completely !
"Jumping the guards just isn't a viab......" one of the Officers was saying, when Blackus dropped through the ceiling. Several minutes later they were jumping through what seemed a solid section of bulkhead into an observation lounge.
Calli spotted Bethan and Vanessa ... They were stood with Chloe and a woman who worked for the rebel faction. As the Commodore entered, followed by Teerh himself, who noticably sttod right next to the exit rather than entering the room. The woman allowed the girls to run, thats when she saw the body ... She knelt beside the corpse placing two fingers against the carotid artery in her neck.
"She is dead." the woman pointed out needlessly.
Thats when Calli noticed the ligature marks. Looking up at the woman she noticed the fine, almost filament-like belt she was wearing. Nothing else needed to be said ... Standing, Calli looked out at the nebula when she heard someone mention the ship, or rather the obvious lack of the Galaxy Class Starship.
She turned to Taarh, watching him closely as he in turn watched Torek. The Commodore was at the windows too, realization showing in his expression.
"Teerh ?" Calli said questioningly.
"The Vezi sent a patrol into the nebula earlier, that is why Gaain has been otherwise engaged. He has had the ship moved. He could not allow Sanctuary being found, but less so with the alien vessel here too. It is going to be much more difficult to get you back on board now."
That the ship had been relocated she had no doubt. That Teerh's explanation was genuine, of that, she had her reservations.
"How long have you known the ship had been moved ?" Torek asked stepping close to the Vezi. So close that the two guards stepped between the two men guarding their superior, "HOW LONG !"
"That is not relevant at the moment Commodore ...... We had to effect your escape now, while Gaain was distracted. You have seen the size of this base. Over seventy percent is still either unoccupied or under final construction. We have had no need for internal sensors, thus it is going to be very difficult to locate you if we keep you moving. The optical device is in very limited supply, and so far the others do not possess one, thus our freedom of movement. But have no doubt, Gaain 'WILL' hunt for you. So please, do as you are asked and will will get you to your vessel in time."
Bethan and Vanessa stood close to Carl, both girls trying hard to put on brave faces, but Calli could tell they were frightened.
"I need to leave you for a short time." Teerh continued, "My men will remain for your, protection ... I am well aware you know where the stasis field to exit this room is, but I would strongly advise you to remain here. there will be less chance of your discovery."
Without waiting to see anyone was going to comply, he left them. I took all of two seconds before everyone began asking where the ship could be. While Calli was still having the nagging feeling there was something amiss with their so-called savior. Was it his demeanor, his constant vanishing act, no, something he had commented on ... She wracked her brain, replaying his comments i her head and there it was ..... He had said 'Alien Vessel' ..... Did he somehow suspect, or even know, that the Raven and her crew were indeed alien to this dimension ..........
The explosion was almost instantaneous. Aeryn was shocked at its shortness. It sounded as if it was being....muted out. Now that was something to work with.
The man who Aeryn knew to be Harry Wedlerson whimpered in the corner he still cowered in. "What was that?" he asked in a frightened tone.
Aeryn scoffed a little bit. "It was an explosion Harry, what else. But it was muffled so it couldn't be heard in here."
"I told you to stop calling me that. Its not my name." The man became more adamant.
Ignoring the thought process of getting out for a while, Aeryn said, "Okay, look. Whoever you think I am, I'm not, Okay?"
"Whatever." He was upset, obviously lost in his own thought.
Aeryn looked at him, pitying him. "Whatever is going on here, they have us turned against each other. At this point, all I can assume is you are one of them."
"Who? The Kvarn? NEVER!" The man yelled. "Those lying bad boys are going to destroy everything we have worked so hard to achieve!"
Aeryn, raising a proverbial eyebrow, said, "Who are you?"
The man waited before responding, considering the options. "I feel as though something is not right here. For now, I will trust you. My name is Rainn Gremar. I am an engineering scientist on the energy project. We were beginning diagnostics on the...."
"Stop," Aeryn interrupted. "We need to figure out how to get out of here. Were you captured? Who was it?"
"I...I don't know," Rainn stammered.
"Calm down. What was the last thing you remember?"
"We were working on the containment measures needed for the energy conversion. We had just figured out the proper equations, then...." he stopped. "I don't remember anything after that."
"Hmmm..." Aeryn thought to herself. "I feel like something is amiss. Did you have any enemies within your department?"
"Not that I know of. Serzah, one of my researchers disappeared two weeks ago. No one has heard from her since." He seemed frightened again.
"Don't worry, we are going to get out of this."
As soon as she said it, the wall next to the far side began to glow. It started to get hot in the room. A small part of the wall, near the center, started to glow brighter. Suddenly it dissolved into the air and the wall stopped glowing. The room returned to its original temperature. Aeryn approached the door attempting to see outside. A figure appeared on the other side. The figure's head popped into the room, scaring Rainn.
The man spoke. "Come with me if you want to live."
(ooc: Hope to see you guys soon )
