~ Mission 07: Prelude ~ ooooo000000ooooo Synopsis:
While the Olympia was on her last mission, Eleven Senior Flag Officers, all holding vital positions within the Federation, have been abducted, tortured, and then murdered. Junior Officers are having to take Command until replacements can be sent to the further outposts and Star bases ... Starfleet Command have acquired information that it could be a prelude to invasion by a race known only as the DAVORI ...
Originally from the Delta Quadrant, the Davori are believed to be a ruthless, murderous race, set on complete domination of all races they conquer. They have become allies with several races in our quadrant and use the resources of those races to further their progression through the Universe, taking technology, information, and slave labor as they require it.
Admiral Sato Tetsutarô ... Head of Federation Security, has narrowly avoided capture by allies of the Davori on Star base forty seven, killing his attackers in his own quarters. But not before gleaming vital information that the Devori are amassing a massive fleet in the Perseus Arm ... Smith immediately requested the Olympia be sent to investigate, but Tetsutarô, fearful another Flag Officer could find himself in enemy hands refused, citing Smiths' knowledge as Fleet Commander could compromise any efforts the Federation may need to take. After a long and heated argument, Tetsutarô relents.
But there are conditions Steven must yeild to !
He must change places with his Operations Officer and reduced in rank to Commander First Class. Tan would be granted Rear Admiral rank for the duration of the mission. Smith, Rose, and Tan are given strict instructions, to get all the data possible about the strength of the possible invading fleet. Get that information back to Command, and above all, keep Smith alive ...
The Olympia will travel to the Rosetta Nebular, where they will be contacted. They must get as much information as possible. But there are obvious dangers ... It is unknown which races are aiding this threat to the very life of the Federation, so they must be cautious of who they speak to, as anyone, on any world, could be an ally to the Davori ..........

Ten minutes later the Olympia was docked, umbilicus stretched out to feed power to the ship as the warp core was shut down. Two walk-ways extended to allow access, and base maintenance personnel started to pour onto the ship. "Well let's go see what the Admiral wants." Smith said. Crystal and David fell into step as they entered the turbo-lift ... Withing minutes the three were entering the enormous Command Center where the Head of Fleet Security had his office. ~~~~~~~~~~Tan was shocked at the news that almost a dozen Admirals had been killed ... Mitchell, Narsu, Admiral Komack from Star fleet Command on Earth ... It was almost impossible to think these men and women could be reached, let alone abduc ..... "Are you listening Commander ?" Tetsutarô said, a grin forming despite the seriousness of the meeting. "I Apologize Admiral, i was just ....." "Yes. It is unbelievable this could be happening, but it is." "I want to take the Olympia into the ....." Steven began, but Sato interrupted him with a shake of his head, "Sir, what other Star ships are available. None. The closest is over a week away." "I cannot allow you to ....." Tetsutarô began, but this time Smith was out of his seat, towering over the frail looking Japanese, almost shouting the aged Admiral down. David and Crystal sat totally silent as Smith pleaded his case ... Finally, Tetsutarô agreed to allow the Olympia to investigate the Davori threat. But no-one, least of all David was ready for the ultimatum the Admiral set ... Smith was to step down, albeit for the duration of the mission, handing over Command to him. "Sir, with all due respect, Command should be the Execu ......" David began. "One piece of information gleamed from my erstwhile attackers, was that our enemy have little use for women in Command, their men being the hunter gatherers if you will. No disrespect Commander." Sato said to Crystal, "So you see Commander Tan ... You, as they say, are it !" "He'll be fine Admiral." Smith said, glancing at Tan. Tetsutarô nodded, looking from one Officer to the next. "OK ... I assume you are keen to be underway. How long before you can depart ?" "Four hours Admiral." Tan replied instantly, knowing all the supplies and spares they needed could be beamed direct to the cargo bays. They could make repairs en-route. "Very well." Sato said .. "Computer ... Make the following Officer changes." * Ready Admiral * a silky computer voice replied. "Admiral Steven Smith ... Temporary reduction in rank to Commander First Class ... Commander David Tan ... Temporary promotion to Real Admiral ... Both effective immediately ... Link with Olympia main computer." * Olympia Computer * =^= Admiral Sato Tetsutarô .. Head of Federation Security .. Voice identification =^= * Identification confirmed * =^= Transfer all Command codes to Admiral David Tan effective from this communication =^= * Command codes changed * the ship replied almost matter-of-factly. "Close connection ... End log." * Confirmed * the smooth voice answered. "OK ... Departure at zero two thirty hours." Sato said, glancing at the chronometer over the door, "Get whatever crew is sitting around waiting and whoever else you need to fill open positions. I don't want you under-crewed ..." The three Olympia Officers stood and headed for the door. "Good luck Admiral." "Thank you." Smith and Tan said in unison. A wry smile formed on Sato's lips as he watched them leave. ~~~~~~~~~~Three hours forty five minutes hours later, they were waiting on the Bridge for their remaining crew allocations, and confirmation that everything they had requested was aboard ... that arrived a moment later. Tan sat at Opps and opened a Comm link to the Dock-Master, but Crystal coughed politely causing him to turn in her direction. Steven was stood behind him. "You're in the wrong seat ... Captain." Almost self-consciously, David got up and moved to the Command seat next to the Exec .. Taking a deep breath he held it for a second before exhaling. "Take us out Commander." he said. Smith faced the front, and a few seconds later the Olympia slipped back from her dock. Rotating through one eighty degrees, before inching forward on her maneuvering thrusters. Then they were in open space. "Heading .... Admiral ?" the Helm Officer asked after a few seconds and still trying to take in the sudden changes to the Command structure. "The Rosette Nebular ... Warp six." Tan said. "Locked in." "Engage !" .......... OOC: OK all, we're on our way ... Hope you all enjoy this outing

Crystal had accompanied her CO to the meeting alongside David and had sat in silence as the true situation and the list of the dead Admirals was read out to her. She had met two on the list briefly. This was a terrible shock. No one had ever said that serving in starfleet was a safe career but even so you did not expect eleven flag officers to be abducted and murdered in so short a time. And then there was the torture to consider. It did not speak well of the Davori, then again they should not be underestimated.
Admiral Tetsutarô's conditions had surprised Crystal but she understood the need for the secrecy. Of course David and the Admiral had swapped jobs once before. That was a blast from the past, it had been her first mission on the Oly, she'd been a mere Ensign back then and hadn't really known either of them.
She felt a little uncomfortable about the situation as she had effectively been jumped over for the command position. Yes there was a reason and yes she understood, but it was going to take a little getting used to that she should be accepting orders from David and giving them to the Admi.. Commander Smith. Crystal realised she'd better get the ranks straight, it wouldn't do if she slipped up at the wrong moment.
She had checked the crew's return and that the Oly's requested stores had been loaded on board. These were part of her standard duties and they left her with plenty of brain power to mull over Admiral Tetsutarô's earlier words when Steven had protested that Crystal be the one to take command. "One piece of information gleamed from my erstwhile attackers, was that our enemy have little use for women in Command, their men being the hunter gatherers if you will. No disrespect Commander." She hadn't taken offence at the words but it was a little wearing to be overlooked, of course she had found it useful on occasion and wondered if she would this trip too.
Maybe it was time that the Oly went to Angel I or Cygnet XIV or another matriarchy just to balance things out a bit. Still that wasn't really her concern right now. Her concern was getting the information starfleet needed and getting back without losing another flag officer.
She had also found time to check on the new members of senior staff
Tag: New arrivals feel free to meet Crystal on your terms and I'll back post my side as needed.
Crystal, as she preferred to be, was on the bridge when the Oly left space dock. She noted that Admiral Tan still looked a bit uncomfortable in red, she remembered that feeling only too well, of course it could have been the rather large jump in rank he had received that was putting him off balance. Still he was now her CO and she would do her utmost to support him.
She watched as he sat at his usual position at Ops, Crystal cleared her throat causing the Admiral to look round and observe that Commander Smith was standing behind him.
Rotating through one eighty degrees, before inching forward on her manoeuvring thrusters. Then they were in open space.
"Heading .... Admiral ?" the Helm Officer asked after a few seconds and still trying to take in the sudden changes to the Command structure.
"The Rosette Nebula ... Warp six." Tan said.
"Locked in."
"Engage !" .......... The stars on the viewscreen streaked as the warp drive. What would be waiting them in the Rosette Nebula Crystal did not know. She had read every available piece of information on the Davori and the attacks twice and it had still taken less than hour. There simply wasn't that much to go on. She called her notes up on her screen and looked at data. She wanted to say something to David but knew that it was best done in private. If he was calm here she would wait.

Steve was still positioned at Ops and was doing the job as best as he could. It was still a bit weird for him to be back in Operations Gold, instead of Command Red. The rank didn't bother him as much. This mission was going to be tough to pull off. Not only would it mean no slip-ups from himself, Crystal or David....it actually fell down to the entire crew as well...to make sure that there wasn't anything that could be noticeable to an outside viewer that the command team had swapped places.
He went to lean on the arm of his chair and nearly fell on the floor.....which made him make a mental note; 'Ops chair doesn't have arms - check'. He looked round to make sure no-one noticed, and then turned back to the front and carried on the tasks.
Steve began to get a little frustrated where he was, and turned to face 'his' chair.
"Admiral....may I see you in your Ready Room for a moment, please?"

"The Rosette Nebula ... Warp six." Tan said.
"Locked in."
"Engage !" ..........
~~~~~~~~~~
The ship had been traveling for roughly fifteen minutes on her prescribed heading. The silence cut the air of the Bridge like a knife through warm butter. The Olympia's Executive Officer hadn't taken her eyes off the view-screen since they had jumped to warp. As for Steven ... It was more than obvious, given the fact that the man was trying hard to hold himself in check, that he was also less than pleased that the head of Federation Security had switched their respective positions ... David was about to say something to break the proverbial 'ice' when Smith turned to face him.
"Admiral ..... May I see you in 'your' Ready Room for a moment, please ?"
The crew were silent as David hesitated for about one second, stealing himself for what was to be his last 'Command' as the Olympia's Commanding Officer. He stood up, motioning toward the ready room door and waited while Smith preceded him, then he turned to Rose.
"Commander, you can join us ... Lieutenant, you have the Bridge."
He followed his two superiors into the ready room, and was a little rattled as they both stood in front of his, Smiths' desk. Arms behind their backs, left hand in right as if they were two Cadets caught having sex on the Academy Commandants' desk and were about to get well and truely roasted by Tan ... David got part way round the desk before he couldn't hold his tongue any further.
"Right ... I need to get this out ... Sod the rank insignia, they mean nothing in this damn situation." he held a hand up, surprisingly shutting Smith up before he could interrupt and removed the Admiral rank from his collar throwing it to the desk, "I had NO idea Admiral Tetsutarô was planning on switching our roles this mission. I wasn't looking forward to going back out this quickly either, as I'm sure we all weren't. It's blatantly obvious Commander Rose is less than content, and we all know it came as a shock to you Admiral .... So ...."
"I never said I wa ....." Crystal began, but Tan was getting his say in no matter the consequences that followed, so he in turn interrupted the Executive Officer.
"You'll get your chance Commander, but I NEED to finish what I have to say before we walk out of this room. So ... Please bare with me OK .... While I have TOTAL respect for Tetsutarô, him being my Mentor for some time. I cannot agree that this switch is worth the effort. Flag Officers are being snatched, thats a fact. Will they come after you ... Possible ... But 'IF' they do, then I am best suited to making sure we get you back should they manage to get you. All due respect Admiral. But I know my abilities, and they are best placed in my 'real' role on the Olympia ......"
Tan had fully expected an outburst from both of them, but for some reason neither was talking. So he moved round the table and went to the replicator ...
"Brandy ... Three."
The glasses containing the golden liquid materialized and he picked them up before returning to the desk, placeing a glass in front of each of the others before raising his own in a toast.
"...... I think, with respect to Admiral Tetsutarô, we should disregard the switch idea and go the hell after these people on our own terms !"
He watched the two Officers, his arm still raised, glass in hand.
"Now ...." he said, "You can comment." ..........
Crystal sat in silence on the bridge, which wasn't exactly unusual for her and stared fixedly at the viewscreen, which was rather more unusual. It was a lot to take in. The Oly had had a rough time last trip and while the ship had been patched up Crystal was feeling a little worn. Maybe things we starting to catch up with her. Maybe she would take some leave or perhaps ask if she could putter around in the lab for a bit. She wondered how her parents and siblings were she had meant to send them a letter but hadn't. She added it to her to-do list without taking her eyes from the screen.
This mission had barely started and all ready she was frustrated, yes, she did like to investigate things but she preferred to do it when they had a bit more of an idea of what they were getting themselves into and what they hoped to gain from it.
"Commander, you can join us ... Lieutenant, you have the Bridge." Admiral Tan's words, Crystal was pleased that she had thought the rank right, cut into her revive. Commander Smith was on his feet and the two of them were clearly not happy.
"Of course, sir." She got to her feet and headed for the ready room. It was painfully obvious that the three of them were having difficulties with this charade. They were putting the mission at risk at that was simply unacceptable. She settled at parade rest in front of the Admiral's desk.
"Right ... I need to get this out ... Sod the rank insignia, they mean nothing in this damn situation." he held a hand up, surprisingly shutting Smith up before he could interrupt and removed the Admiral rank from his collar throwing it to the desk, "I had NO idea Admiral Tetsutarô was planning on switching our roles this mission. I wasn't looking forward to going back out this quickly either, as I'm sure we all weren't. It's blatantly obvious Commander Rose is less than content, and we all know it came as a shock to you Admiral .... So ...."
Crystal was a little annoyed that she had been so obvious about her unhappiness with the situation, she was supposed to be a better diplomat than that. Still, she wanted to make it clear that it was NOT the rank switch that had her annoyed but her own failure to remember it and her frustration that they had been sent off with so little information.
"I never said I wa ....." she began, but David cut her off. She was a little annoyed but it seemedhe was pretty desperate to make this point.
"You'll get your chance Commander, but I NEED to finish what I have to say before we walk out of this room. So ... Please bare with me OK .... While I have TOTAL respect for Tetsutarô, him being my Mentor for some time. I cannot agree that this switch is worth the effort. Flag Officers are being snatched, that's a fact. Will they come after you ... Possible ... But 'IF' they do, then I am best suited to making sure we get you back should they manage to get you. All due respect Admiral. But I know my abilities, and they are best placed in my 'real' role on the Olympia ......"
Tan had fully expected an outburst from both of them, but for some reason neither was talking. So he moved round the table and went to the replicator ...
"Brandy ... Three."
The glasses containing the golden liquid materialized and he picked them up before returning to the desk, placing a glass in front of each of the others before raising his own in a toast.
"...... I think, with respect to Admiral Tetsutarô, we should disregard the switch idea and go the hell after these people on our own terms !"
He watched the two Officers, his arm still raised, glass in hand.
Crystal picked up the glass in front of her. She didn't usually drink brandy but didn't she vaguely remember a quote about brandy being the drink of heroes... She wasn't sure if it was the real stuff or not, she doubted it given that the three of them were on duty but given the stress levels in the room...
"To doing things on our terms." She offered as a toast. She wasn't sure what those terms were but, they had to find a way of stopping Admiral Smith becoming the next flag officer to be killed. If the Devori had the intelligence to track the other officers it wouldn't do to assume that they didn't know that the Oly was commanded by Admiral Smith and not Admiral Tan. Also it made no sense to put David at risk. They had to think of something better. Something that didn't underestimate their opponents.
Steve just sat in silence, mildly amused at this whole little meeting....but he wasn't about to show it. Taking the drink, he just set it on the desk.
When David finally stopped talking, Steve moved over to the nearest chair. Never being one to stand for longer than is necessary, he sat down. David and Crystal looked at him, and he just shrugged.
"Right.....my turn." He said, after a moment's pause. "I have no doubt in either of your abilities to carry out this mission as was intended." Nodded to the removed rank insignia, he added: "And you can put those back on, David."
Steve glanced out the window. "Thing is...the ability I doubt on this is my own. Don't get me wrong, the change in rank and everything is fine....but I came up through the ranks in Security, and not Ops. And I think that could be the weak point."
Steve stood up again and walked to the desk. "Now, I propose that we keep up the pretence that we have started....however, I am confident that things would go a lot more smoothly if I took up the CTSO post....at least I know that like the back of my hand!"
Janet stepped off the turbolift and stopped for a moment to look around the bridge she shrugged as she took a bite out of a large red apple. ‘Now where did they get off too?’ she mused to herself as she noticed the three Command officers were noticeably absent.
She walked to the Ready Room and pressed the small console on the side of the door she didn’t wait long before walking in and with a raised eyebrow said. “Well, I forget are you Larry Or Moe this time?” She said to Tan before looking to Rose and adding. “You’d have to be Curly… that’s a given.”
She then looked to Smith and nodded with exaggeration. “No wait.. your Moe and he is Larry.. you see you confused me because your normally Larry.. but I digress as amusing as you modern day three stooges are.”
She took another bite out of her apple and lifted a Padd up and placed it on the desk. “These orders are a joke.. I am told to prepare for something but you don’t know what.. You can’t specify what I will need.. or when I will need it.. and most of your crew are confused as to why your playing musical chairs with rank.”
She shook her head and sighed before lifting up her hand seeing Tan about to jump into one of his long winded speeches about something undoubtedly boring. “Yes, I know, I know.. You’re an Admiral now and I am grossly out of line!”
“But then again.. your setting a very poor example drinking on duty.. you know even synthehol is a no when your on duty.. us poor impressionable junior officers might get the wrong idea and be corrupted! How terrible.” She said in a mock voice.
She sighed again. “Unless you three are going to break into a fight with funny props.. you might want to do something… Like.. I don’t know.. Command.” She shrugged her shoulders and rolled her eyes before walking back out of the ready room.
Walking through the bridge she sighed and shook her head. “I wonder if Ferengi ship’s take applicants.. might actually get to work with a sane crew!” she stepped onto the turbolift and went back to sickbay.
They were still in the ready room, Admiral Smiths' ready room ...
David had had his say, he didn't want Command, he was uncomfortable holding a rank he clearly hadn't earned, nor ever would in his opinion. Crystal was frankly going through the motions saying she was happy for the 'roll play' to continue.
But Tan was done. Smith could have the damn ship.
He was a little surprised to say the least when Steven requested they keep up the charade. It was possibly the best way to bring out whoever was killing the Federation Flag Officers, and more importantly ... Why !
Reluctantly, Tan picked up the rank insignia.
"This means nothing. Do we understand each other ?" he said, placing the pip back in it's place on his collar, "Respectfully we'll play out this plan Tetsutarô has set in motion, but as for Command, that is firmly on you two .... because frankly, I'm no ......" he was interrupted by the Comm.
=^= Bridge to Admiral Smi .. Sorry .. Admiral Tan .. Sub-space Comm Sir .. Admiral Tetsutarô =^=
"Speak of the devil." Tan commented in a half whisper.
=^= Put it through here =^= he said.
=^= Admiral Tan .. I have to inform you that Admiral S'lox has been found dead in his home on Vulcan .. What is your situation ? =^=
=^= We are sixteen hours from the Rosette Nebula Sir .. Our information says we will find someone willing to point us in the right direction if we can get in and out unscathed =^=
=^= Increase speed Admiral .. Things are getting out of hand .. Tetsutarô out =^=
Tan finished the last of the warm golden liquid in his glass and placed it back on the replicator, the glass promptly vanished from sight.
Smith tapped his Comm badge ...
=^= Smith to Helm .. Increase speed to warp eight =^=
=^= Warp eight aye =^=
Hours later the Olympia entered the Rosette Nebula ..........
Crystal was back on the bridge, she wasn't sure if she wanted to apologise to Dr Reilly or not. Certainly senior officers were allowed to have emotions but not while they were on duty. She hadn't been dealing well with the whole set up to this mission and the waiting was making things worse.
At the end of her shift with hours to go until they reached the Rosetta nebula Crystal handed over command and left the bridge. She went straight to sickbay and tracked down Dr Reilly, Crystal had never really pinned down how she felt about the doctor, she had been on the edge of some of the issues between Reilly and her predecessor Jack Crane but she had never really gotten to know the knew doctor. She hoped they hadn't gotten off on the wrong foot.
"Doctor," Crystal said. She sounded a bit nervous which wasn't a good thing. "I was hoping you could fit me in for a physical. I've been a bit run down of late."
She really didn’t like being on Olympia, everything made her remember Crane and how annoying he was. She hated and liked him which only made it all the more annoying and witnessing him die still troubled her it felt like a life time ago and yet only yesterday at the same time. That again only caused her further annoyance.
She leaned down and rested her head on her folded arms, her eyes now heavy.
"Doctor," Crystal said. She sounded a bit nervous which wasn't a good thing. "I was hoping you could fit me in for a physical. I've been a bit run down of late."
Janet looked up and gave a slight nod, “Take a seat on a Bio Bed Commander I’ll pull up your medical record.” Her voice tired but still distant and void of any recognizable emotion.
She picked up a padd off of her desk, and with the other hand pressed a few commands into the computer. With Rose’s medical file in hand she walked out of her office and to the bed Rose had chosen to sit on.
She briefly looked down at the Padd and said. “No ongoing medical issues.” She looked up, “How long have you felt run down Commander?”
<Tag Rose>
“I see.” Was her only response as she put down the padd and picked up a medical tricorder, “Take slow deep breaths please.” She concentrated for a few silent moments on the tricorder and then looked up.
“It looks like your not getting enough meaningful sleep Commander, think back please, when you wake up do you feel tired? And when was the last time you had an un-interrupted sleep cycle?
It had taken five hours at high warp to reach the Rosette Nebula ... Nebula wasn't exactly a correct definition of the system, as there was no vivid colored gaseous cloud to enter, instead, there was a faint 'glow' to the surrounding space, almost like watching lights on a shore through a light dawn mist. Even so. It was still as deadly as any other space.
There were seven planets orbiting a G-Type star, though smaller that Sol, it gave enough light, heat, life, to sustain a low oxygen atmosphere on the second and third planets, which followed each other in almost identical orbits ...
"We have reached the Rosette System Sir. Rosette Three is asking for confirmation of our orders." Helm informed them.
"Send confirmation and take us into standard orbit." Tan said.
"Drop us out of warp. Enter the system under impulse power." Steven said, turning around in his seat at Opps, "According to those orders, we're simply dropping supplies off to the mining colony, we hardly need to go charging in there."
David hadn't thought of that. He nodded to Helm to carry out Admiral Smiths' suggestion. The Olympia dropped out of warp drive and the stars stabilized. They could see the almost milky haze around the system, and the dull red sun at it's center.
"Time to orbit ?" Tan asked the Helm Officer, and was informed it would be twenty two minutes. He stood up, "Commander Smith, Lieutenant Johnson, ready room please. Ensign, contact Sick-bay. I believe Commander Rose went to see the Doctor. Ask both of them to join us."
Within minutes everyone on the Senior Staff was present ...
Tan put the relevant information on his desk screen and turned it so all those in the room could see it.
"As you can see. We are going into orbit around the third planet, thats where the main refining and distribution complex is situated. There is no guarantee that our contact will be there. In fact, it's highly possible he's on Rosette Two, where the mining is done ... I'm hoping this damn contact will be here though, as it's going to be bloody hard, if not impossible to fit in at the mining complex, but be prepared to ferry over there should the need arise. There is a pretty large sized town established near the refinery, several bars too, obviously. All we were told at the briefing was we would need to blend in and not attract attention. Our contact will make himself, or herself, known to us in due course ... Anything to add Admiral ?" Tan finished, looking at his Commanding Officer.
< tag : Adml Smith >
Everyone voiced their thoughts in the next twenty minutes, then the Comm chimed.
=^= Tan =^=
=^= We've established orbit Sir .. Central control says they are ready for us to begin beaming the supplies to the surface and asked if we could take the mines supplies direct .. They say we can take 'R and R' while we are here too Sir=^=
=^= Confirm we will ship the mine supplies direct .. Also thank them for the offer .. Tan out =^=
"Well there's our way down to the surface. We can go with the supplies, the ship will take the mining colony supplies then re-establish orbit above us." Smith said ..........
Doctor Reilly briefly looked down at the Padd and said. “No ongoing medical issues.” She looked up, “How long have you felt run down Commander?”
That was the question wasn't it. There was no way this was going to look good in her records but there it was. She had a problem and was seeking help with it. "At least three months maybe as much as a year. It came on gradually but it's been getting worse of late."
“I see.” Was her only response as she put down the padd and picked up a medical tricorder, “Take slow deep breaths please.” She concentrated for a few silent moments on the tricorder and then looked up.
“It looks like your not getting enough meaningful sleep Commander, think back please, when you wake up do you feel tired? And when was the last time you had an un-interrupted sleep cycle?
"I wake up feeling a bit tired but much better than I went to bed but uninterrupted sleep, lets stay 8 hours..." Crystal cast her mind back she was surprised to note how many times she had woken up in the middle of the night. It had almost become normal. Sometime she was called to deal with some piece of ship's business or a minor emergency but often she was waking herself up to make notes on some issue or scientific puzzle or other. She sighed as the realisation came to her. "I honestly can't remember the last time that I slept for eight hours straight. My mind's always buzzing, that was a good thing back when I was a science officer. Now I'm not so sure. It's like my mind never stops. Physically I guess I don't feel too bad a bit tired maybe but not too bad. Mentally... I don't know. I feel like I can't think and my temper is nearly always frayed."
Having defined the problem Crystal was determined to find a solution.
David was still looking over the specifications for the mining complex on Rosette Two, and the large refinery and distribution center on Rosette Three ... It seemed there was no single race operating the mine, more some sort of international multi-species outfit.
"Sir ... The mine manager is requesting a Comm link." the Helm Officer informed him. Tan nodded and watched the image on the screen change to one of an expensively furnished office.
=^= Admiral Tan .. I am Peter Vance .. Mine Superintendent .. I was just informed you had taken up our offer of a Lay-over .. We're a little less funded than most holiday resorts but we have plenty to keep bored Star fleet Officers entertained and we do pride ourselves in our home cooking .. I would be honored if you would accept my invite to you and your Senior Officers to dinner tonight at my home ? =^=
Tan gave Smith a sidelong glance before returning his gaze to the screen.
=^= We're sending the supplies down now .. So yes .. I'm sure we will be able to come down for a meal .. In fact .. I'm looking forward to a good non-replicated meal if truth be known =^= Tan replied, as if telling the man a secret.
=^= Good .. I will have my office send you the beam-down co-ordinates and I'll expect you at twenty one hundred .. Please inform your crew they can use all but the 'Red' restricted area's while on the surface .. Until nine Admiral .. Vance out =^=
The screen went back to a view of the planet slowly rotating below them.
"It will take the Olympia six hours to take the mining supplies and return. We'll be down there without any back-up until she returns." Smith said, answering David's un-asked question as he checked the chronometer above the screen:
17:57:26 ...
"We'll take two Security Officers down with us ..... Get Commander Wallace up here." David said, thinking hard, "But given the 'warm' welcome from Mister Vance, I think it better if they go with concealed phasers. We will need to show willing and go down unarmed."
The idea didn't go down too well with Admiral Smith, but David was grateful he didn't dispute his decision.
"I'll inform Crystal and the Doctor to be ready to leave by twenty forty five." Steven said as the Chief of Security entered the Bridge and stood in front of them, "Commander, assign two Officers to accompany the Senior Staff to the surface. Transport at twenty fifty prompt."
"I'll use Lieutenant Ellison and myself Sir."
"Concealed phasers only Commander." Tan added as the man left the Bridge to prepare, "OK ... Let's make sure we have all the bases covered before we drop into the lions' den .... Any thoughts ?" ..........
The hypospray Dr Reilly pressed against her neck seemed to instantlt reduce the amount of tension in her neck and shoulders. Whether it actually worked that fast or whether it was purely phsycosomatic Crystal wasn't sure. In either case it helped a lot.
The meeting went well although Crystal still found herself disliking this mission, there wasn't enough infomation about what was going to make her feel comfortable. She didn't voice her opinions at the meeting, she knew everyone was feeling pretty much the same way. They were still pretty much flying blind.
Crystal was still feeling a spring in her step when she recieved the orders to report to the shuttle bay for dinner. She stared in the mirror in herquarters checking that the consealed phaser and emergency kit she was carrying weren't showing. She'd replicated a tunic a little larger than usual and it appeared to be hiding both the phaser and the emergency kit perfectly. She went down to the shuttle bay arriving by the shuttle at 20:44 precisely. She smiled at the other assembled members of staff. She was actually looking forward to dinner. It would mostly likely be interesting. She settled into a window seat in the shuttle.
She got a twitch of nerves when she entered the shuttle, she remembered all to vividly the time she and a third of the Oly had been hijacked and she had ended up on a shuttle and had nearly died due to gas inhalation. Still, she had managed to keep her flight rating. it was only the most basic level but she had felt that practising was the best way to get through her nerves and it had mostly worked, she was no down to an easily squashible twinge as she stepped through the hatch.
David walked into the hanger-bay and headed toward the shuttle they were using to go to the surface. He would have preferred to beam down if truth be known, but given the atmospheric interference, that wasn't an option ...
Seating himself he looked round, seeing Crystal looking intently at the plexi-glass port. Once everyone was aboard he ordered the Security Officer assigned as pilot to get underway.
Dropping away from the ship, Tan watched the Olympia bank to starboard and begin to power out of orbit. The ship would deliver the mining supplies then re-establish her orbit here. It didn't go un-noticed by the others that the ship had gone and they were on their own for the duration.
~~~~~~~~~~
Visibility was down to zero as the pilot dove through the dense cloud layers hanging above the surface. Only the shuttle's inertial dampers prevented them from being thrown about, but they finally broke through and entered relatively calmer air. Tan heard the port contact the pilot and he adjusted his angle of approach before letting the shuttle drop on a gentle slope before touching down on a dusty, seemingly disused landing pad.
"Keep your phasers concealed at all times. We're here for a friendly meal thats all. Commander Wallace ...." Tan said, addressing the Security Officer, "I want you to stay close to Admiral Smith and myself while Lieutenant Ellison will stay with the others."
"Aye Sir." Wallace replied, nodding to Ellison.
"OK .... Hope everyones hungry." David said, trying to keep the nerves out of his voice, "Let's go."
As they walked across the thirty meter distance to the doorway, Tan couldn't help looking into the dark brooding sky. Then they were met by a tall man.
"Welcome Gentlemen ...." he said, looking Crystal up and down like a prospective purchase, before noticing her looking directly at him like something she had rather not stood in, "Pardon me Commander, but women are in the minority, both here, and at the mining complex ... Forgive me, I am Peter Vance, Mine Superintendent, though I much prefer Manager. This is Katim, my Deputy." he said.
David introduced the members of the Olympia, beginning with his Executive Officer. The others he introduced by name and rank only, leaving their positions on the ship vague. All the while he could sense Katim, almost glaring at him, but remaining silent.
"If you would follow me." Vance said, motioning toward the air-lock type door, "We'll get out of this dust."
~~~~~~~~~~
Given the complex was so rudimentary, it was far from basic ... The 'town' was quite large once through the outer wall. They had come to the central command center where Vance had his office and had been seated at a large dining table, obviously set up especially for their meal. Food from several worlds was available and the talk was pleasant and informative, until Katim voiced his opinion about 'outsider interference' as he described it ... David glanced at Steven, who nodded imperceptibly. When Tan asked the Deputy to elaborate, he was all too eager to do so.
"We are nothing to the Federation." he began, ignoring the look from Vance, "The day will come whe ......"
"Thats enough Katim." Vance said, the calm, reassuring genial smile not hiding the look of contempt and anger at his deputy's comments, "These people have joined us for a meal, not a political debate."
It was obvious to everyone around the table that Vance was giving Katim a direct order to shut the hell up, before he clicked his fingers to the people serving. They approached the table and took away the plates, before bringing several carafe's of a blue liquid ...
"Kali-fal, I believe this is called. A warm and most suitable drink for our toast I think." he said, as a large measure was poured for each of them, "I have enjoyed our meal and am looking forward to some stimulating, how do those on Earth put it, after dinner conversation, yes ... So you are all aware, quarters had been made ready for your stay with us when we conclude this dinner. Maybe tomorrow we can give you a tour of our refining and distribution complex." he said, raising his glass to make a toast, but Tan interrupted him.
"Sir. I have to thank you on behalf of my crew, for an excellent meal, but we'll be going back to the Olympia when she retu ......"
"I'm afraid that won't be possible Admiral ....." Vance said, a little too quickly, before looking apologetically at his guests, "But a weather front has entered this region and there's no possible way your shuttle would make orbit ... I didn't want to spoil the meal by informing you earlier, but our safety regulations must be adhered to. Now, given your ship will only get back during our night period, I'm sure they will be reassured that their command staff are safe and well, and once the front has passed, they can begin bringing people down to take advantage of our hospitality."
"I could give it a try Admiral." Wallace said, looking determined to keep his Commander safe. But Vance touched a panel and a section of the outer wall, a metal shield outside the plexi-glass window lowered ... Everyone took a breath as they looked at the storm raging outside, both shocked and surprised at the fact nothing was noticable inside the room. Winds approaching two hundred kilometers per hour past the glass !
"The complex has a force-field set at ten meters from the outer wall. Anything more would make it totally useless, and as you can see, some of the debris still makes contact with the wall, thus the shutters." Vance finished, reinstating the metal barrier over the window.
These so-called 'storms' were never mentioned in the briefing, and Tan was suddenly worried about what other information Star-fleet Command had not acquired, and it suddenly dawned on him that they were now totally alone on the surface. Even the Olympia couldn't get down here to recover them now, and they STILL had to find and make contact with the informant ...
"So .... You have no reason not to enjoy a drink and relaxation. The weather fronts usually pass over the region in twelve to twenty four hours, depending on severity." Vance said, hoping he had reassured his guests.
David looked at Steven and Crystal as he picked up his glass, wondering what the hell they were making of their situation, and if he would still be around tomorrow to ask them about it ..........
Crystal watched through the viewport as the shuttle left the Oly and travelled down to the planet below. Transporting would be a lot quicker but you did miss the scenery. If she remembered this rather than what had happened then she would get over her nerves quicker.
Her view of stars disappeared into clouds as the shuttle decended. The clouds seemed to be gettingthicker as they approached the surface. It seemed the weather was pretty bad on the surface. The landing port was dusty, it obviously hadn't been used in a while.
"Keep your phasers concealed at all times. We're here for a friendly meal thats all. Commander Wallace ...." Tan said, addressing the Security Officer, "I want you to stay close to Admiral Smith and myself while Lieutenant Ellison will stay with the others." Crystal listened to the advice. She would behave herself.
"OK .... Hope everyones hungry." David said, "Let's go." Crystal knew David well enough to hear the nerves in his voice. She doubted whether anyone who didn't know him that well would have noticed though.
They walked through the entry way and were met by a tall man
"Welcome Gentlemen ...." he said, Crystal noted that she was excluded for the greeting and his gaze sweep over her. Oily was the wword that can to mind. She plastered a small smile on her face, but her gaze hardened until it became laser like and he noticed. She hoped that she hadn't stepped outside politeness, yet. "Pardon me Commander, but women are in the minority, both here, and at the mining complex ... Forgive me, I am Peter Vance, Mine Superintendent, though I much prefer Manager. This is Katim, my Deputy." he said.
Crystal gave a slight head inclination when she was introduced but stayed formal. She noted that most of the rest of the away team were not introduced by ship position.
"If you would follow me." Vance said, motioning toward the air-lock type door, "We'll get out of this dust."
The away team followed Vance into the complex. It was not that far to the large dinning room that had clearly been prepared for them. Food from several worlds was available and the talk was pleasant and informative, until Katim voiced his opinion about 'outsider interference' as he described it ... David glanced at Steven, who nodded imperceptibly. When Tan asked the Deputy to elaborate, he was all too eager to do so.
"We are nothing to the Federation." he began, ignoring the look from Vance, "The day will come whe ......" "Thats enough Katim." Vance said, the calm, reassuring genial smile not hiding the look of contempt and anger at his deputy's comments, "These people have joined us for a meal, not a political debate." Crystal kept her eyes and ears open during the meal, she said little more than necessary for politeness.
She looked up as carafes of a blue liquid wer brought in. At first she thought it might be Romulan Ale but the content was soon elaborated on if not explained.
"Kali-fal, I believe this is called. A warm and most suitable drink for our toast I think." he said, as a large measure was poured for each of them, "I have enjoyed our meal and am looking forward to some stimulating, how do those on Earth put it, after dinner conversation, yes ... So you are all aware, quarters had been made ready for your stay with us when we conclude this dinner. Maybe tomorrow we can give you a tour of our refining and distribution complex." he said, raising his glass to make a toast,
David spoke "Sir. I have to thank you on behalf of my crew, for an excellent meal, but we'll be going back to the Olympia when she retu ......" "I'm afraid that won't be possible Admiral ....." Vance said, a little too quickly, before looking apologetically at his guests, "But a weather front has entered this region and there's no possible way your shuttle would make orbit ... Now, given your ship will only get back during our night period, I'm sure they will be reassured that their command staff are safe and well, and once the front has passed, they can begin bringing people down to take advantage of our hospitality."
The debate continued until Vance touched a panel and a section of the outer wall, a metal shield outside the plexi-glass window lowered. Crystal was impressed, if she had a bit more time on her hands she would be interested in taking up atmospheric science again.
"The complex has a force-field set at ten meters from the outer wall. Anything more would make it totally useless, and as you can see, some of the debris still makes contact with the wall, thus the shutters." Vance finished, reinstating the metal barrier over the window.
Crystal had not heard anything about these storms and had not read anything in the reports about this planet. It was certainly a very interesting phenomena but it was rather concerning that it had not been mentioned anywhere. What else had been missed?
"So .... You have no reason not to enjoy a drink and relaxation. The weather fronts usually pass over the region in twelve to twenty four hours, depending on severity." Vance said, hoping he had reassured his guests.
Crystal caught David's glance which flicked from her to Steve. She picked up her glass and took a discrete sniff of the blue liquid and then a cautious sip. It had a kick but it wasn't that bad. She would love to get her tricorder out and examine the make-up of the drink.
Come to think of it she wanted to get a record of that storm and examine how it formed. Maybe she could linger in the control centre, she was sure she had seen readouts from atmospheric sensors. Still she would have to follow David's led on what they were going to do after this meal. There were mysteries here and she wanted to investigate.
The group settled down to their meal ... David had to admit, despite being a distant out-post, though not in astronomical terms of course, the facilities were only a little short of lavish. More so in connection with the Superintendent's home. 'If the dining room was anything to go by, the place must be massive' Tan thought. Peter Vance had gone all out to wine and dine the Olympia Officers, that's was certain, and as the evening progressed, David could see everyone starting to relax. he grinned to himself as he watched Crystal's eyes flicking to the shielded windows, knowing she was itching to be doing something rather than just sitting here. Steven too was keeping a wary eye on the room and it's occupants. After the meal they all moved to an adjoining room for coffee and more drinks. Though the Kali-fal, or whatever it was called, was taking it's toll on his senses, and each of them began to feel drowsy. Vance finally took it upon himself to call the evening to a close and wished the Olympia crew a restful nights sleep in his home ... Once he found his room, David found everything he needed for an overnight stay, and was soon in bed. He had fully intended to collect Crystal then go to Steven's room and talk over what they could do next. But the minute his head hit the pillow he was out cold ..... Next Morning ...Opening his eyes, he felt the pain of the morning sunlight as it tried to burn through his retina and into his aching head ... Raising a hand to shield himself from the glare, he looked round and was a little surprised, though thankful to see a glass of water, fizzing silently away. Not thinking on 'how' it got there, but knowing a hangover cure when he saw one, he took the glass and downed the cool liquid. His mind began to clear instantly ... Then there was an urgent knocking on his door ... Before he could get up the door opened and Commander Wallace walked in, concern all over his face. "Sir ..... We have a problem. I've woken Commander Rose too, she'll be here momentarily." Tan climbed out of the bed and headed for the adjoining bathroom, he told Wallace to continue as he washed his face then dressed, "Sir. I went down early to check if the Olympia had returned ....." "And ?" Tan asked, a knot developing in his stomach suddenly. "That bloke, the shipping supervisor or whatever he is ... From the meal last night." he said as Crystal entered the room, "He said they had received a Comm from the mine. A problem with the supplies or something. They woke the Captain and asked him to go to the mine in their supply shuttle. Apparently they said it wasn't too serious and didn't require waking you Sir." David took the information in ...... Yes, it was possible there had been a problem, also possible the Admiral would have taken it upon himself to go without waking either himself or Crystal. But Tan doubted it. "So the Admiral went to the mine without us. Maybe this will be how we make cont ....." David began, but Wallace interrupted him. "No ... Sir ... I contacted the Olympia, she's still in orbit around the mining moon by the way. They say there's been no problems, apart from the initial delay because the mine wasn't ready to receive the crates. So I checked on the shuttle. They only have the one, and that's still on the padd !" Tan suddenly felt a foreboding envelop him. "Maybe the Superintendent has a priv ....." "No. There's only the one and that never left the complex ... The deputy manager, Katim, has vanished ... So has Admiral Smith !" "Contact Olympia." Crystal ordered Wallace, "Get her back here as soon as possible ... David, we need to speak to Vance right now !" It occurred to them all that the rebels knew of the ruse being attempted by the Federation, otherwise they would have played out the 'problem' scenario with David, and not Steven ... The rebel group now had another Flag Officer, and given the time-lines of the other abductions, Smith had something like seventy two hours to live ... Their only lead, Katim, had disappeared along with Steven, and it hadn't gone un-noticed that they still hadn't made contact with their so-called 'informer' ! .......... < tag : All >
Crystal had drunk her glass of Kali-fal as slowly as she could, she knew she wasn't drunk at the end of the evening but she had gone through three glasses, she was still feeling tired. Her mind was buzzing and until recently she would have sat at her desk and done some work rather than sleep, however, she knew that if she allowed her restlessness to get any worse she would be in trouble and it could mean the end of her career. So, with that in mind Crystal peeled off her uniform jacket and overtunic, took off her boots and placed both phaser and emergency kit under her pillow. She resisted the impulse to grab the tricorder and go snooping.
David would no doubt wake her up shortly but even a nap was better than nothing. She lay down and put her head on the pillow. Her mind was still busy but gradually she smothered the noise bit by bit V'Sel had tried to teach her to mediate and although Crystal hadn't realised it at the time evidently some of those lessons had sunk in.
The next thing Crystal knew was a buzzing on the door chime. Crystal sat up and combed her fingers through her hair. She was surprised that she had slept. She pulled her tunic over her head and walked to the door, she certainly wasn't at her best but David had seen her worse than this so it didn't matter.
"Come in."
Crystal was surprised when Commander Wallace entered, she was even more surprised when he reported that Admiral Smith had gone missing. She took his report as calmly as she could and told him to go and wake Commander Tan. It did not take her long to splash cold water on her face and put her jacket and boots back on.
Why was it that within two minutes of waking from the best sleep she had had in a while she found herself wishing that she hadn't gone to sleep at all. Crystal sighed and stowed the phaser and emergency kit as they had been the evening before.
She made her way to David's quarters as quickly as she could.
"From the meal last night." he said as Crystal entered the room, "He said they had received a Comm from the mine. A problem with the supplies or something. They woke the Captain and asked him to go to the mine in their supply shuttle. Apparently they said it wasn't too serious and didn't require waking you Sir." Crystal heard the last of Wallace's statement, it was the same information he had given her. She had come up with sixteen theories in the time it had taken her to get here but it seemed that David was all ready proposing things.
"So the Admiral went to the mine without us. Maybe this will be how we make cont ....." David began, but Wallace interrupted him.
"No ... Sir ... I contacted the Olympia, she's still in orbit around the mining moon by the way. They say there's been no problems, apart from the initial delay because the mine wasn't ready to receive the crates. So I checked on the shuttle. They only have the one, and that's still on the padd it never left the complex ... The deputy manager, Katim, has vanished ... So has Admiral Smith !"
"Contact Olympia." Crystal ordered Wallace, "Get her back here as soon as possible" She was surprised by how calm she sounded, maybe stress did bring out the best in her. Still she would not want that 'best' do come at any cost to anyone let alone one of her friends.
Crystal turned her attention back to David "we need to speak to Vance right now."
She pulled the tricorder from the emergency kit. It was probably a bit late for subtlety on that count. "We are going to have to conduct an investigation ourselves. I don't like what's going on here even before this." She started making a survey, she started with herself.
Her eyebrows went up. "David, you need to see this." She turned the tricorder so he could see the display which revealed that there were trace sedatives in her system.
"I think that it was that drink last night. It's a naturally occurring chemical and slow acting. It's possible that is just how that stuff comes. You could build up a tolerance to it without every realising it was affecting you. You'd feel a bit more tired than normal but you wouldn't suddenly fall unconscious."
Tag: David
She scanned David. "You've got some in your system too." She showed him the read out. "Like me, low concentrations, should have no discernible affect at that dosage, but..."
If Steve had been dosed too it would have made it a bit easier for him to be taken unaware but it would be no guarantee.
David had contacted the base Superintendent demanding to speak to him, and was about to go to his office when Crystal entered his room ...
"Contact Olympia ... Get her back here as soon as possible." she ordered the Security Officer, before taking out a tricorder as Wallace tapped his Comm badge and contacted the ship. As she scanned David she explained the slow-acting chemical in their blood stream.
"The Olympia is on her way Commander." Wallace said after listening to the Exec's diagnosis. He took out a small hypo-spray and shot something into both Officers' arms then into his own, "It's a broad spectrum antigen ... It should dissipate any drug introduced into the blood."
Tan could feel the hypo working.
"Vance is meeting us in his office. From my first impression of our conversation I don't think he was aware of anything prior to me Contacting him."
"OK ... Lets go." Crystal ordered.
~~~~~~~~~~
"Admiral ... I must assure you tha ......." Vance began as they entered.
"Forget the 'Admiral' Superintendent !" Tan said, "Commander Rose is the Olympia's Executive Officer, and the person in charge. I'm Commander Tan. Second Officer ..... Now ! ..... Where the hell is 'ADMIRAL' Smith and that ever so helpful deputy of yours ?" he demanded, slamming his hands on Vance's desk.
"Commander ... Thats not helping." Crystal said quietly, without looking away from Vance as David stood back with Wallace, who had drawn his phaser.
"I don't know what to say Commander." Vance said, taking a long look at the weapon in Wallace's hand before turning back to Rose, "Katim had been sent to us as a replacement for our former Deputy, who was unfortunately killed in an accident. It seemed a little quick that the company sent a replacem ......"
"Thats all well and good Vance." David said, impatience getting the better of him. Or maybe he was wondering why Rose hadn't got the man by the throat and was throttling the information out of him, "But it's not telling us anything about where the Admiral is, or how we go about getting him back .... Is it !"
"How did they get off this rock if you only have one shuttle, and 'THAT' is still in the hanger ?" Wallace asked, raising the phaser a degree or two, "You have logs ... Arrivals, departures, shuttle movements ?"
"They, erm, yes, but ......" Vance began, stuttering, and visibly nervous now as he tapped a Comm link on the desk and spoke to someone in the control room, "They, there has, we have had no movements off-planet in the last ten days, apart from your shuttle and the Olympia, and nothing in orbit." he added quickly.
"So they are still on the planet then." Tan said.
"I ... I don't see how that can be possible." Vance said, looking at the three Star Fleet Officers, almost shrugging, "This is the only settlement on the surface, and as you have seen, there is no way anyone could survive the storms without adequate protection."
Crystal's Comm badge chirped and she tapped it.
=^= Olympia to Admiral Tan =^=
=^= Olympia .. Commander Rose .. We can forget the pretense now .. What is your ETA ? =^=
=^= Six hours fifteen minutes Commander =^=
=^= Establish low orbit and begin scanning the surface for Admiral Smith and any other lifesigns on arrival .. Inform me of anything you find outside this complex =^=
=^= Understood Commander .. Olympia out =^=
"I'm beginning a thorough investigation Mister Vance." Crystal said after closing the Comm, "I expect, no, demand your compliance, and that of your staff. Is that understood ?"
"I don't think you have that authority 'Commander' ..." Vance said, seemingly suddenly finding his back bone.
"Then we will have the complex here, and on the mining moon shut down and Star Fleet Security will be brought in to conduct a full inquiry into everything going on here." David said, menace in his voice, "That will include your shipping in of 'escorts' should we call them, for the obvious use of your mining crews, and your possible involvement in the abduction of a Star Fleet Flag Officer !"
"You can't threaten me like this ..." Vance said, temper and obvious frustration reaching boiling point, he slammed his fist on the Comm link, "ALERT ONE .. ALERT ONE .. My office NOW !"
Seconds later the door opened and several heavily armed men rushed into the room. Wallace raised his phaser but received the butt of a rifle to his jaw. There was a sickening crunch as the bone broke and Wallace hit the floor stunned. David got himself between several of the guards and his Exec' as she knelt beside the injured Security Officer. Blood was flowing freely from his mouth as Crystal ripped the sleeve off his tunic and placed it on the broken jaw. She took his hand and told him to hold the compress firmly to stem the flow. Then she turned to Vance ..........

Is it !" "How did they get off this rock if you only have one shuttle, and 'THAT' is still in the hanger ?" Wallace asked, raising the phaser a degree or two, "You have logs ... Arrivals, departures, shuttle movements ?" "They, erm, yes, but ......" Vance began, stuttering, and visibly nervous now as he tapped a Comm link on the desk and spoke to someone in the control room, "They, there has, we have had no movements off-planet in the last ten days, apart from your shuttle and the Olympia, and nothing in orbit." he added quickly.
"So they are still on the planet then." Tan said. "I ... I don't see how that can be possible." Vance said, looking at the three Star Fleet Officers, almost shrugging, "This is the only settlement on the surface, and as you have seen, there is no way anyone could survive the storms without adequate protection."Crystal's Comm badge chirped and she tapped it.
=/\= Olympia to Admiral Tan =/\= =/\= Olympia, Commander Rose here. We can forget the pretense now. What is your ETA ? =/\=
=/\= Six hours fifteen minutes Commander =/\= She wished they were closer, a lot could happen in six and a quarter hours.
=/\= Establish low orbit and begin scanning the surface for Admiral Smith and any other lifesigns on arrival .. Inform me of anything you find outside this complex =/\=
=/\= Understood Commander. Olympia out =/\=
"I'm beginning a thorough investigation Mister Vance." Crystal said after closing the Comm, "We are going to go over this planet with a fine toothed comb and I expect, no, demand your compliance, and that of your staff. Is that understood ?" Her voice was stony. She didn't flex her command muscles very often, on the Oly most people knew better than to push her that far, but when she did she made absolutely sure that her orders were crystal clear.
"I don't think you have that authority 'Commander' ..." Vance said, seemingly suddenly finding his back bone. Crystal didn't like the tone he put on her rank. She about to say something, when David spoke up. Crystal sighed internally, nothing against David, but there were times when she could have it looking like someone was speaking for her. This was one of them. He was closer to Steven than her and it was showing still, she wasn't going to slap him down in public, at least no more than she had all ready done.
"Then we will have the complex here, and on the mining moon shut down and Star Fleet Security will be brought in to conduct a full inquiry into everything going on here." David said, menace in his voice, "That will include your shipping in of 'escorts' should we call them, for the obvious use of your mining crews, and your possible involvement in the abduction of a Star Fleet Flag Officer !" "You can't threaten me like this ..." Vance said, temper and obvious frustration reaching boiling point, he slammed his fist on the Comm link, "ALERT ONE .. ALERT ONE .. My office NOW !" Crystal cursed internally, she had let things get out of hand and now she had to remedy the situation somehow.
Seconds later the door opened and several heavily armed men rushed into the room. Crystal found herself shoved backwards. Wallace raised his phaser but received the butt of a rifle to his jaw. There was a sickening crunch as the bone broke and Wallace hit the floor stunned. David stepped in front of her as Crystal knelt beside the injured Security Officer. Blood was flowing freely from his mouth as Crystal ripped the sleeve off his tunic and placed it on the broken jaw. She took his hand and told him to hold the compress firmly to stem the flow.
She straightened up and then she turned to Vance. She was able to skewer him with a look that channelled all of her anger and frustration. "There is going to be a full and thorough search for Admiral Smith. Your own words state that he must still be on the planet and most likely somewhere in this base." Vance was looming over her and beginning to sputter in answer. Crystal advanced half a pace towards him, aware of the armed guards she kept her hands clear of her sides and made no other threatening guestures. Vance took half a pace back. He had the look of someone who has just realised that the small animal he had been teasing has both claws and a poisionous bite.
Crystal took a full pace forwards, Vance continued to retreat. "Before you protest about my authority I suggest you read amendment 114 subsection 12 of the Federation code which deals with Starfleet's authority in the case of a planetary security issue which concerns Starfleet."
She smiled it was neither a sweet nor reassuring expression. "The abduction of a Starfleet Admiral and the base's Assistant Manager, is clearly a major security issue." She made no comment about the possibility that said Assistant Manager had been involved in the Admiral's abduction. "Therefore the ranking Starfleet Officer, which would be me, has the authority to dictate and conduct any and all investigations with the complete co operation of the planet concerned."
She had sucessfully backed Vance around his desk and back into his chair. She whirlled round before he had a chance to respond, instead she addressed the security team. "I assume that Katim's security clearences have been revoked." Her tone made it clear that Crystal assumed no such thing.
"Umm that is.." It was clear he wasn't used to being addressed in such a manner.
"As I thought." Crystal sighed. "Go and deal with that now. There is no problem here. Just a little juristicational spat. " She gave another unnerving smile.
The security officer's gaze flicked to Vance and then to one of his own officers, then to Crystal and then back to Vance. He couldn't have been more obvious if he had sent the message in semaphore. Crystal was completely unsurprised when the indicated officer launched himself at her clearly intending to envelope her in a bear hug, not a bad option given the size differential.
"Crystal, look out" She heard David's shout but she was all ready in motion. She sidestepped and caught the security officer's arm as he reached for where she had been. She jammed her fingers firmly against a nerve bundle and then applied torque to the captured limb. Once she was comfortable with the grip she had which was very painful but would not do permanent damage unless she intended it to. She reached out with her left hand and plucked the officer's phaser from it's holster. She kept the muzzle pointed down. The rest of the security officers had their phasers trained on her although the narrow confines of the office and her use of the captured officer as a shield meant that none of them could get a clean shot at her.
"Now, Vance. Before there is any further unpleasantness. I will give you one more chance to stand your security force down and to co operate with my investigation.
"Stand down." It was half way between a sob and a sigh. Crystal dropped the phaser to the floor and kicked it away from her.
She gave a small tweak on the captured wrist and propelled the man back to his colleges.
"Right. Let's forget all that unpleasantness. Karim's securitl clearence needs to be deleted. Incidentally look up when it was last used. And a the most detail sweep of this facility possible is going to be started every cubic centimeter is to be accounted for. She surveyed the room. Any questions?"

After they left the office Crystal turned to the injured security chief
"Wallace, you me and Commander Tan are taking a quick detour to the medical bay. We need you in top form."

Vance spoke to his Officers, shame oozing from every pore. After telling them to step down he slumped into his seat and awaited directions, though he knew they were orders rather than anything close to requests.
"I want Katim's clearance deactivated and a flag on any doors, access area's that he tries to use." Crystal said, looking at her injured Officer, " I want a complete scan made of this facility, any signs, no matter how insignificant, of Katim 'OR' Admiral Smith, must be reported to us."
"Understood ...... Comman ......" Vance said as Crystal and the others moved into the corridor.
"Wallace ... You me and Commander Tan are taking a quick detour to the medical bay. We need you in top form. This way I think."
~~~~~~~~~~
Word had got out that the Federation Officers were in charge. The medical staff treated Wallace the moment they entered. Crystal was thinking quickly, but it seemed Tan was too.
"There's got to have been a way off this rock." he said, accessing as many schematic records as he could from one of the terminals, Is it possible they had a long-range shuttle hidden. It would have needed to be cloaked, or the base or Olympia herself would have seen it leaving orbit."
He slammed his fist into the console in frustration.
"Like that's going to help." Crystal said, watching the medic finish dressing Wallace's injuries.
"I've given you a sedative Sir, but I wouldn't try to be too energetic for the time being."
"Thanks." Wallace said, jumping down off the examination table. He picked up his phaser and smiled apologetically to his superior Officers, "I'm ready to go Sirs."
"I figure 'IF' Katim had a shuttle, he's either sitting out there waiting for a ship to pick them up, or he's hiding behind one of the moons hoping Olympia won't pick them out before their ride arrives." David said, pondering the options.
"He could have gone to the mine." Wallace said quietly.
David slapped his Comm badge.
=^= Tan to Olympia =^=
=^= Olympia =^=
=^= Time to orbit ? =^=
=^= Seventy five minutes Commander =^=
Crystal stood close to Tan so she could be heard on the ship.
=^= Lieutenant .. Commander Rose .. Begin scanning the surrounding space as you approach .. Also check long-range sensors .. It's possible there is a cloaked shuttle out there awaiting rendezvous .. If you find anything let me know immediately =^=
=^= Yes Commander =^=
=^= Contact us the minute you assume standard orbit .. We'll be coming aboard .... Tan out ! =^=
The Comm closed.
"You think that Vance guy was working for the rebels ?" Wallace mused.
"Well he wasn't exactly trying hard to be any help was he, even when he knew our shy and retiring Exec' here might actually rip his arm off just for the hell of it." Tan said geinning at his quip, "But I think it is possible he was scared of what reprisals not supporting Katim, or at the very least keeping his mouth shut for the duration, might have brought ... I checked his record, he has a wife and three children. Maybe Katim had threatened them." he finished, shrugging.
"Let's go see how the search is coming." Crystal said, leaving the sick-bay without a second glance ..........
"Let's go see how the search is coming." Crystal said, leaving the sick-bay without a second glance. She had an idea.
This place had sensors and there was no way that they could have recorded the departure of a cloaked vessel, however those sensors were set to examine the weather, in particular cloud formations with the aim of spotting approaching storms. However well you could hide a ship from sensors, and these days you could do it pretty well especially if you had access to the sensors beforehand, however, there was no good way to hide the affect that ship in transit would have on an atmosphere particularly a cloud laden one.
All she had to do was locate any errant air currents or cloud disturbances...
She explained things to the sensor techs and then managed to sit back and let them get on with sifting through the data from the last day. She was itching to stare at the controls and hit the keys herself but she had just taken control of the facility and if she was going to hold that together she couldn't just drop everything to play with the sensor data.
Crystal looked over at Commander Tan "Has anyone been over Admiral Smith's Quarters, I wan some you trust to check the observations. If we can isolate what time the Admiral left then it might help us narrow down the atmosphere search. "
"Has anyone been over Admiral Smith's Quarters .... I wan some you trust to check the observations. If we can isolate what time the Admiral left then it might help us narrow down the atmosphere search."
"I'll go." Tan said, motioning to Lieutenant Ellison to follow him while Commander Wallace would remain with the Exec'.
~~~~~~~~~~
As they reached the Admirals quarters, Tan could see one of the miner's leaving the rooms, they increased their pace and he shouted to the man to stop. The miner looked round and immediately bolted, Ellison took off in pursuit.
Reaching the door, David entered the rooms ... At first glance nothing seemed out of place. The living area was clear of anything personal, which didn't surprise him as Smith wasn't the 'make a house a home' type. He moved to the sleeping area, the Admiral's overnight bag was on the dressing table. It was open, but that again wasn't unusual as he would have been using it's contents ... What was unusual was the fact that all the contents had been taken out and placed neatly to one side.
He moved around the room, taking care not to actually 'touch' anything. Given the fact there was no signs of any struggle, it backed up the original report that Smith had gone willingly and not under duress, but that doesn't mean he continued to be so helpful. he moved back into the main room and approached the door and using the override code Vance had given him spoke to the computer ..
"Override code 'Zee-Delta-Two-Two' .. Display access log for this door."
The list of times the door had opened, both from the inside and outside showed on the small display. Discarding the times they and the miner had entered, the door had opened twice within three minutes during the night:
Open - Internal : 04:32:46 Open - Internal : 04:34:18
'Ok, so it took Smith ninety seconds to dress and leave his quarters after someone had rang the door chime' Tan thought, thinking hard then he tapped his Comm badge ..
=^= Tan to Rose =^=
=^= Rose .. Go ahead Commander =^=
=^= There's no signs of a struggle in the Admirals quarters but someone has rather neatly gone through his bag .. According to the log he left the rooms at zero four thirty four hours .. We found someone leaving the rooms when we arrived .. Lieutenant Ellison has gone after him .. We should have the Olympia check for Ion signatures from zero four thirty five to maybe zero five hundred ? =^=
=^= I'll contact the ship now .. Bring that miner here if you catch him .. Rose out ! =^=
David was about to contact Ellison when he opened the door himself.
"Sorry Commander, I lost him, it's like a damn rabbit warren down there. He dropped this, some sort of data recorder, it was playing something repeatedly, but all I'm getting from it now is static." the Lieutenant said apologetically.
"Don't worry about it." Tan said, taking the device, "We're done here ... Lets get back to the office, maybe we can get something from this."
Ellison fell into step as they headed back ..........

The base command point was not exactly a relaxing place to be but even now it was a couple of steps down from the Oly under red alert. Crystal was working hard not to literally stand and breathe down the necks of the sensor technicains. Instead she had attached herself to an auxillary sensor station that wasn't in use and had started putting all the information they had together. She knew when she had been summoned and when the Admiral had gone to his quarters last night.
She was also toying with an alogrithm for analysing eddies in the atmosphere. Obviously the track would have to start at the base and more specificall at the bay doors but beyond that she hadn't managed to narrow the parameters further.
=/\= Tan to Rose =/\=
Crystal tapped be comm badge to respond to David. =/\= Rose here. Go ahead Commander =/\=
=/\= There's no signs of a struggle in the Admirals quarters but someone has rather neatly gone through his bag .. According to the log he left the rooms at zero four thirty four hours .. We found someone leaving the rooms when we arrived .. Lieutenant Ellison has gone after him .. Crystal swallowed a curse as that sunk in. They needed the Oly. That was clear. =/\= I'll contact the ship now .. Bring that miner here if you catch him. I'm ndoing what I can to help. Rose out.=/\=
Crystal used the internal sensors to locate Lieutenant Ellison, which was too tricky, however the signal was moving back towards the Admiral's quarters at a walking pace. Either he had the someone who had run or he had lost them. Either way there was nothing she could do now to help.
Crystal opened a comm to the Oly, they had managed to cut some time off their transit. She doubted the CEO was going to be impressed with the extra strain place on the engines but she was grateful. The Oly reported that they were half an hour outside of sensor range. She relayed the information to Commander Tan.
Crystal used the parameters supplied to start her algorithm running. Meanwhile the sensor techs started work looking at internal tracks for the Admiral and external traces for the shuttle. She wondered what the intruder wanted in the Admiral's room. She would have to wait until he was caught.
