Personality & Traits
General Overview: Crystal always wanted to be an explorer. She is happy up to her waist in mud, peering through a microscope or poring over a screen full of data as long as there is a chance that she’ll see something she (or better yet no one) has seen before. She is usually very enthusiastic but can get distracted easily. She has an easy going sense of humour and usually approaches life cheerfully. She is passionate about what she does but can still make decisions logically. As a result of this she has been accused of being more interested in science than people, this is not true, it’s simply that she can separate the two, particularly in the line of duty.
Strengths & Weaknesses: Crystal is a shy speaker unless on one of her pet topics when she becomes animated and enthusiastic. She gets on well with people generally but is usually a bit quiet and distracted in social situations as her mind is often elsewhere. She has a long standing fear of heights after falling from a cliff when she was five years old. This fear has become less serious recently after she was forced to climb through the Jefferies tubes of Starbase Bellicose after sabotage had shut the main power down. She is determined and inquisitive; and while these traits may get her in to trouble from time to time she considers them to be strengths.
Ambitions: Crystal has wanted to be a scientist since she was five years old. Having achieved that goal her ambition was to discover something memorable, her first mission on the Olympia involving analysis of a Nekori plasma weapon which proved to be driven but the until then theoretical ‘variant S’ reaction. The paper she wrote detailing her analysis of the reaction and counters to it has prompted a resurgence of interesting in this area of high-energy plasma physics. There is even talk of naming this the ‘Rose Reaction’, Crystal is intrigued and bemused by this. Her interests have moved on, but it seems likely that she will fulfill this ambition soon.
Crystal never had any thoughts about command but now that she is on the command track she harbours an ambition to command a ship of her own one day, probably a research vessel. She has not mentioned this to anyone. Her current main ambition is to keep being a scientist despite being a first officer.
Hobbies & Interests: Crystal is interested in pretty much any form of science, but at the moment especially mineraloloy, geology, climateology, zero-g xenobotany and stellar physics. This is subject to frequent and unpredictable change. She collects ‘interesting’ things, these days mostly in hologram form; a notable exception to this is Elive (Elvie, more properly ExperimentaL Voice Instruction Eight, is one of Crystal's souvenirs. Elvie was built by a T'Sel a gifted robotics/computers postgrad friend of Crystal's to test anew program and was then been gifted to Crystal after Elvin had been built. It is a four-legged voice controlled wandering device that on a simple activation would go in a straight line until it met an obstacle it couldn't pass, it would then turn at a random angle and head off again.). She likes old music but is a pretty bad singer. Crystal practices unarmed self-defense as often as possible.
Languages: Crystal speaks Vulcan although native speakers have said that her accent isn’t very precise. She reads and writes the language more fluently than she speaks it. She is also able to read and write Latin as a result of a fascination with the language as a 9 year old.
Family
Father: Jasper Rose; artist, specialty sculpture
Mother: Maria Rose nee Johnson; artist, specialty murals
Brother(s): Robin (two years younger than Crystal); musician
Sister(s): Heather (three years older than Crystal); artist, specialty landscapes
Spouse: none
Children: none
Other Family: (Uncle and Aunt, father’s side) Martin and Helene Rose, (Cousins) Jedda Rose, age 22 the only other scientifically minded person in the family (currently – 2398 – fourth year cadet), Pearl Rose (20) and Neil (17).
History: Crystal was born on stardate 2366.3006 in the city of New Berlin, Luna. She is the middle of three children and part of a close nit extended family. From a young age it was obvious that she didn’t have the artistic drive of the rest of her family and her parents were slightly at a loss to deal with their scientifically minded younger daughter particularly when she brought ‘interesting’ things home with her. Her mother particularly believed that this was a phase Crystal would grow out of. Crystal and her mother have had regular rows since Crystal first announced that she wanted to study science and then join Starfleet.
Although Crystal and her mother continued to row Crystal stuck to her decision; to this day her mother wants her to return home to Luna and settle down. At 18 she went to Cambridge University, Earth to study for a Combined Sciences Masters Degree. This study included a year on exchange at the Vulcan Science Academy. While academically this was a very interesting experience Crystal spent a lot of the year feeling very lonely as she didn’t really fit in amongst the Vulcan students. There were exceptions to this and one of these, V’Sel remains one of Crystal’s closest friends. After finishing her Masters degree Crystal accepted an invitation from Professor Peter Garner to do comparative mineralogy research towards a Doctorate. Crystal enjoyed her research but her dedication meant that her other relationships suffered.
At Cambridge Crystal started a relationship with fellow student Morgan Winter, this relationship lasted until two months before Crystal finished her research. Morgan split up with Crystal saying that she was ‘more in love with her experiments than him’; he would later claim that he had simply been worried about the hours she was spending in the lab. In the end she finished her experimental work but joined Starfleet before she had finished the write up. It wasn’t until Crystal returned to Earth in 2394 that she discovered that Morgan still believed that they had a future together. Considering any future would require her to leave Starfleet and live a ‘safe’ life Crystal strongly doubts that they will ever find common ground. Now, if she can get Morgan to accept that her life will be simpler.
Once Crystal had been assigned to the Olympia it seemed unlikely that she would ever submit her thesis as she was constantly busy with missions and the day to day pressures of running a science department. In the end she did submit her thesis and passed her viva on stardate 2394.0908.
Crystal enjoyed being a Chief Science Officer and got into several situations she wouldn’t otherwise have had a chance to experience; not all of them were life-threatening. She cultivated a lot of friendships with other members of the senior staff including a slightly unlikely one with then-FO Tiberian Wong. When he left the Olympia Crystal was quite shocked when then-Captain Steven Smith offered her the First Officer position as she had never sought command and had never even considered herself suitable for the job. Now that she has the job she is determined to stick with it and do the very best she can for the Olympia and her crew and Captain.
In the latter part of 2393 while on shore leave on Starbase Bellicose Crystal suffered what at the time was her most traumatic experience when she was briefly held hostage by a possessed killer. Crystal hated feeling so helpless and has started practicing unarmed self-defense. She has not yet acquired much proficiency and her nature is to think her way out of trouble rather than fight; still, she is not someone to be taken lightly
Her first mission as First Officer provided a further shock to Crystal as two people were killed on an away team she was leading. Crystal blames herself for their deaths and is dealing with the trauma with counseling.
In 2394, Crystal a found herself with her hands fully when work and family collided and her cousin Jedda, then a on her way to becoming a first year cadet wound up on the Olympia and due to the difficulty in transferring Jedda home she spent her entire first and second years of study on the Olympia but was able to keep up with her studies. The complicated situation was not helped when Crystal was abducted, first by people attempting to stir up the civil war on Galfar II, and then again when one of the Olympia’s modules was stolen from starbase. The latter mission caused Jedda to deliberately miss her transport back to Earth in order to help search for her cousin.
