Lt. Walters had recently returned to the Bridge when Jupiter Station and Mars hailed. He had been down in one of the nacelle pylons overseeing the installation of some extra SIF emitters. Every simulation he and his department had run showed that the pylons would be the first to fail, their thin cross sections leading to an early failure. Thankfully their size did make it feasible to install supporting crossbeams, but that would require a dry dock. Extra field emitters would have to do.
As the trio greeted the Captain, Will quickly and quietly walked over to his console and sat down, only to turn and watch the main viewscreen as the recovery ship explained what happened. He shuddered a bit at the description of the vessel’s destruction and thought up a few words for the dead, but a moment later his mind started to work. To prevent the same from happening to the Enzio he needed to know what happened.
When the conversation ended Will hailed Jupiter Station itself, hoping to get some information. It took a bit of doing (“ongoing investigation” seemed to be the favored denial excuse of the day), but he was finally able to get a copy of the station’s sensor log of the incident as well as the emergency data burst from the doomed ship. Putting the visual feed on his screen the engineer watched as the science ship reached the Red Spot then suddenly have its midsection crumple in an instant. The pressure caused the bow of the ship explode sending materials and bodies out into space. The engines continued on for a few moments until their supports failed and they spiraled off into several different directions before shutting down. He set the computer to work processing the data from the station and ship, but the results were pretty apparent. Some sort of force beam struck the science ship, crushing it like a can. With luck he’ll knew just what it was that hit the ship, and wether or not it was natural or artificial.
The investigation progressing, Will turned back to the viewscreen and looked at Mars grow as they approached it. Large clusters of shipyard facilities glinted in the sunlight and a few cities glowed in the nightside part of the planet. Realizing an opportunity, he departed the Bridge to go see the Captain. True, the comm would probably suffice, but this was his first official request, best to do so in person.

Not content with merely gazing at the stars, Ghes felt he needed something else to unoccupy his mind. Right at that moment, growing inexorably in his main viewing portal was the small red dot of the planet Mars, and all the worldly problems that came with it.
He tried lying down on his bed but he quickly became restless. It didn't feel right. Perhaps he needed to do some work, but he knew that there wasn't really anything he could hands-on contribute at the moment. His crew had everything in hand; until they established low Martian orbit and were ready to get on with the next phase of the mission, he was only there to coordinate.
Two minutes later the ship slipped into orbit of Mars, rotating so that its dorsal surface faced the planet, and heading into the sunrise. Copper features of the planet's geography rose into detail, alighting like fiery rust as the solar light spread along the planet's flanks. The Enzio descended to low orbit.
Ghes obtained a drink from his quarters' replicator, downing half the brown liquid before turning to his personal console. The door chime rang as the computer powered up. Ghes looked up, "Do come in."
Lieutenant Walters strode into the room, showing no signs of trepidation at all at entering the Captain's quarters. There was always some curiosity, some interest among junior officers at what exactly a commanding officer's quarters were like.
Ghes smiled, strangely feeling relief at this visit. He put the personal console aside. "Yes, Lieutenant?"
<Tag Walters>
Minutes later as their talk was nearing its end, Gheskori's commbadge chirped. "Captain Gheskori, this is the bridge. We have achieved low orbit."
"Good," he replied to the officer of the watch, sharing a look with his engineer, "Prepare to transport a team to the surface. Have Commander Parsons made aware, and tell him to come to my quarters."

“After reading over the Jupiter Station Supply manifest Request List you would think they have not had a Supply transport ship in Months ‘Cmdr Matthew sent an acknowledgment of the message back to the Bridge and then accessed the Ship cargo manifest which he downloaded to a PADD and then headed towards the cargo 1-2 loading area to oversee the receipt of their cargo and verify that everything listed on the manifest was accounted for and secured for transport prior to the Enzio departing S-B Assailant
The list was somewhat extensive and he would have to check each pallet's contents to verify the correct supplies were inside.
Among the items being shipped to Jupiter Station were:
-Medical equipment: 4 anti-grav lifts; 10 updated bio-beds with isotopic restraints if needed; 200 biological sample kits; 15 bio-function monitors; 5 detronal scanners; 2 portable electronic microscopes; 1 case of subdermal bio-probes; 1 case of auto sutures; 1 case of cellular micro-sutures; 1 case of emergency surgical kits; 1 case of dermal stimulators; and 10 cases of various medical drugs with names she couldn't pronounce.
- Tools / Miscellaneous: 2 cases SIMs beacons; 5 coil spanners; 10 magna-spanners; 10 cases of spare parts for holographic imaging systems; 10 cases of extra computer system components; 5 cases miscellaneous engineering components
- Scientific / Research Equipment: 3 bio-suppressor field generators; 1 case biogenic compound for research purposes; 2 cases deoxyribose suspension matrix; 5 cases of chemicals for microbiological studies; 13 audio / visual recorder-transmitter units; 25 cases botanical specimen cases; 25 cases zoological specimen cases; and at least 50 other items.

Ghes smiled, strangely feeling relief at this visit. He put the personal console aside. "Yes, Lieutenant?"
“I’m sorry for the intrusion Captain. I’ve been readying the ship for a descent into the Jovian atmosphere and I’ve come across a few concerns. Most of them I’ve been able to knock out with extra SIF emitters, but the nacelle pylons are still a huge question mark. We’ve put in as many emitters in them as we can fit but I’m not satisfied.” Gesturing out the window, “Since we’re at Mars I’d like to request a chance at a drydock berth for some structural upgrades. If we put in a series of cross-members in the nacelles I won’t have to worry about them as much, and we can also add in a few physical upgrades to the hull itself as well. It shouldn’t take too long to do, at most a day.”

Ghes looked out the window, following the gesture Walters had made towards the rust red planet. He knew that what his engineer said made sense, but he had his doubts over whether there was any time for the Enzio to moor itself to a Martian haven. Yes, close research of Jupiter was for the moment offlimits, but it wouldn't do the Enzio any good to be lying on its heels.
But, if the engineer had stated that he wasn't satisfied with the ship's preparations, then Ghes knew he had to take it as a serious indicator that they might not be ready for an atmospheric incursion.
He turned his head to his engineer, body still facing the window, "Very well, Lieutenant, I'll get us some drydock time at Utopia Planitia orbital."
Walters nodded; Ghes smiled, almost sadly. "In the mean time we need to be getting the team ready for the surface."
After the call from the bridge officer that confirmed the Enzio's low orbit, Walters left of his own accord and Ghes was left to wait on his first officer. In the mean time, he replayed - again and again - the message from Denobula about his wife.
<Parsons>
Later, on the bridge, during approach to Utopia Planitia Fleetyards...
Mars rotated dizzyingly in the background of the viewscreen as the Enzio rolled to match rotation with Shipyard Epsilon. Ghes stood centrally before his chair and square behind ops and the helm, gazing at the sight. The lights of Epsilon beckoned invitingly and the yard's relative rotation gradually came to zero.
His mind started drifting. In the mind's eye, the face of his ailing wife returned, her ghostly pallor almost overlaying itself on the view of the expanding drydock, in some mocking fusion of home and heartache.
He shook himself to clear the image and tapped his commbadge, "All hands, this is the Captain, we are on final approach to drydock. All assigned containment and triage units report to transporter rooms for surface deployment or to airlocks as appropriate. Senior staff, please report to the XO at which point he will select from you a team to take to the Martian administrative division."
Ghes thought on who would be best for the senior staff team. Commander Galwyn would definitely go given her connection with the local Trill scientist, not to mention her own scientific expertise with the subject. Commander Matthew might go considering his work into the disasters and the work rapport he'd been building with those on the Martian surface and on Jupiter station. The Denobulan Captain didn't know if his chief engineer was planning on supervising the pylon-strengthening work directly or was happy to let the drydock workers get on with it. In Dr. Saryn's case, Ghes couldn't decide if the vulcan would prefer to stay ship-side or not, but as they were approaching a drydock perhaps most would be departing anyway.

Tiana had been off duty when news about the research ship had reached the Enzio. That did not stop her hearing about it though. She called up the crew manifest. She knew three of the crew as names on journal articles but it was the eighth name on the list that made her stomach clench, or maybe that was Cet twisting, it amounted to more or less the same in the end. 'Mira Cellis'. She'd been a year and a half behind Javey and her at the Institute. Tiana hadn't known her well but she was face with the name. Mira could only have completed her dotorate in the last six months or so. Tiana was 90% certain that Javey had had a hand in getting Mira assigned to the research ship.
She checked the time on Jupiter and sent a comm immediately. Javey wasn't taking messages, that might mean that he was busy or...
Tiana left a message. She would try again.
The Enzio was in dock and being tweaked. Tiana could have gone ashore but entered up in Sensor Control with Tomal as they monitored the changes made to the main array.

Saryn tugged down the hem of his tunic, still not used to the constricting forms and layers of the 24th century Starfleet Uniforms. In all fairness, he actually did prefer the coverall of the 22nd century, or simple Vulcan robes. He would've resorted to that, were it not that this was not shore leave.
"Ready?" Savin stepped up to his father's side, similarly dressed though a little slimmer in figure. The younger man had a striking resemblance to the older, as if he were literally simply a younger copy.
The doctor glanced sideways. "Where is Numike?" By means of habit, he supported his speech with hand signals, as he was used to when conversing with his oldest child.
"She did not wish to come, she said and I quote 'you boys have a good time'. Though I am not certain what she means by that, we are not on leave?"
Saryn shook his head. "No, we are not." He tapped his combadge. "Captain Gheskori, Savin and I are boarding the station. Is there anything in particular you desire for us to pay attention to?"

The administrator made his way through the string of security protocols, experiencing a renewed sense of calm. "Door unlocked." The voice recognition panel lit up green and indicated to him that the entrance to his office had been unsecured.
He moved towards the door, turning his head ninety degrees to submit it to a short, general neural scan, and then stepped through the opening entrance. He started: a man was sat at his desk.
"Morning, sir." It was his primary aide, Smith.
"Good morning, Mr. Smith," the administrator said. Smith departed the desk and made his way out of the room, fully aware that his superior would want some peace in the next few minutes.
The administrator sat slowly and folded his arms. Then, quite gently, he nestled his head into them. His eyes were unblinking, peeking into the darkness of the table just beyond his nose. He released a long sigh. Shouts and pleads that vainly hoped for a satisfactory response were still ringing in his ears. They'd stopped and harangued him outside the HQ doors this time - which was odd as he'd walked all the way to the office from his hab, thirty minutes away.
He'd had no information to give the public that might be satisfactory. Nor could he tell the independent media anything that they didn't already know or had already made up. Yes, he could confirm some of their more outlandish rumours and theories, but he didn't want to put that fear into them. All he could do was let the Starfleet authorities take over affairs, and watch and direct from the sidelines, simply maintaining and assuring the Martian public's interests and fears.
Fifteen minutes dragged by while he accessed the casualty reports from the last disaster - just over a month ago. By quite a margin, it'd been the biggest one yet; seventy two dead, nearly two hundred injured.
The door slid open. "Administrator Koscek?" It was aide Smith. Koscek looked up from his reading. "The Starfleet vessel USS Enzio is requesting our latest tectonic data from the disaster sites."
The Enzio had been docked for nearly three hours and, as Ghes was all too aware, the structural refit crew had arrived. The nacelle pylons were at this moment being torn open, strengthening being performed on the interiors. Liaising engineers were milling around Ghes on the bridge, passing down info to those that floated in null gravity next to the nacelle pylons.
"What do you want me to say, Captain?" Koscek demanded, tilting his head, "'Yes, I can confirm that a research vessel in Jupiter orbit has been destroyed and Jupiter station itself has been electromagnetically crippled'?!"
The Denobulan Captain steeled his jaw and regarded the administrator on the viewscreen. Thomson hadn't been this difficult, he thought... Annoying yes, but not as inflexible. "Sir, two hundred people have died." Ghes let the words hang. "You know that even better than I. The people hit by the disasters deserve to know the full truth."
Koscek sighed, sitting back in his seat with his eyes retreating into shadow. His office - or wherever he was communicating from - seemed unusually dark. "Very well, Captain, have it your way. I'll see what I can do." He signed off with how he started the conversation, "Again, the disaster data we have is with you, but we're still analysing and studying the most recent. Koscek out."
Ghes brooded in his chair, before turning to Parsons at his side. A change of plan was developing in his head. "Get down to the administrative HQ and make sure they're doing what they say they are." Parsons nodded and rose from his chair immediately.
<Tag Parsons>
As Ghes understood it, the Enzio was due to depart the drydock in sixteen hours, with a view to heading to Jupiter Station (once the 'quarantine' on the Jupiter area had been lifted, of course). That left a surface team about twelve hours to collect as much up-to-date data as possible.
This fact circulated in Ghes's head as his arm-panel lit up. He jumped slightly; an incoming communication. "Captain Gheskori, Savin and I are boarding the station. Is there anything in particular you desire for us to pay attention to?"
Ghes smiled, glad at the attentiveness shown by his CMO. It was lucky timing to enact his plan. "Dr. Saryn, hello. In fact, could you make your way to the Martian surface, specifically the site of the latest disaster. Once there you will, hopefully, meet Commanders Galwyn and Matthew." Ghes paused to open the commlink to the two commanders and once informing them of the situation he continued, "I think by studying the tectonic and radiation damage to the area first hand we can discern more. You each have free rein to communicate with whomever you like in the area. Tiana, obviously you will focus on the damage done to the crust and the atmosphere, while Saryn you will study what the radiation's effect on the local people has been. James, as well as assisting Tiana and Saryn, you should see to the locals' logistics: are they getting the right supplies and useful leadership."
<Tag Tiana, Saryn/Savin, James Matthew>
"You have twelve hours." Ghes ended the communication and stood from the command chair, and rather promptly a refit crewmember near knocked him over. It made him wonder how Walters was doing. Was he directing the refit?

Spacedock lighting always made his eyes hurt, Lt. Commander William Walters reminded himself as he stood on an exposed girder. The alternating strips of blinding light panels and open black open space played havoc with his pupils. Not even the glow of Mars below could overwhelm the light pattern. He closed his eyes and shook his head, then blinking them quickly in an attempt to wash out some of the soreness. Or maybe I’m just tired. he thought. He’d been awake ever since the Enzio crossed into the system and organizing a combined crew and station repair team was an exercise in frustration at best.
Will took a deep breath and heard his exhale echo in the EVA suit he wore, then it was back to work. The girder he was standing on (thanks to the magnetic boots) was one of the pre-existing structural frames that the Enzio had since her construction. Floating all around were the nacelle’s hull panels and work bees hovered closer to the ship, quantities of new beams and girders for the framework in their arms. Other spacesuited figures were crawling over the nacelle pylons, welding tools fitting new frames into place. In order to strengthen the pylons the engineering teams were adding more of the “hoop” frames along the pylon lengths then adding straight beams between opposing corners of the hoops, forming a cross-hatching pattern as you looked down them. It was an old strengthening method, one that dated back to Earth’s first steel structures (at least), but it was simple and it worked. The only drawback was that it would be murder trying to climb between the nacelles and the engineering section.
An extra benefit of going into drydock for this mission was that the Enzio was able to get the latest computer and other software upgrades as well. If he remembered correctly, a team should be on the Bridge right now. Then Will’s eyes went huge. Glancing at the chronometer on the corner of his faceplate display made it clear that he was late with the regular report. And it was the first one too.
Stifling a groan, Will called up the comm. ”Walters to Bridge. Captain, we’ve gotten the hull plates off of the nacelle pylons and we’re adding in the new framework now. We’re on schedule and should be ready to depart within the next twelve hours. I haven’t heard from Hriss yet about the computer upgrades, but that means things are going well there too. Out of curiosity, has there been any word from Jupiter since we came into Spacedock? I’ve been correlating with them on the loss of the research ship and I haven’t heard back from them yet.”

Saryn frowned at his son at the order/suggestion to go down to Mars. Mars held bad memories for the elder Vulcan, very bad memories. He vividly remembered going down to the surface to go after the Challenger's first officer when he'd gone missing, only to be captured and tortured by said first officer.
Though originally his memories had been wiped on that particular incident, over time, they had come back. And now, with facing going down to a planet he had rather not visited, they came back in full. He too, remembered the helmswoman blindfolding him in order to guide him down a steep set of steps. It wasn't common knowledge that the Vulcan was afraid of heights, something he did prefer to keep that way.
"We have to go," Savin pointed out, "we cannot falter in our duty, simply because we have bad memories."
Saryn looked up sharply. He knew his son's telepathic abilities superceded his own, but he didn't know him to be able to read him without touch.
"Simple logic," Savin explained, "when the captain mentioned going down to Mars, your face drained of colour. But we have to go, many depend on medical care now." The younger Vulcan paused. "What happened on Mars is long ago now father, and this is another area of the planet. We should not be anywhere near the caves where you were held." Of course Savin now knew the details because his father had informed him. Ever since going into orbit, his father had been plagued by dreams, and it was not normal, for a Vulcan to dream.
"You are correct." Saryn tapped his combadge. "We will head down to the surface as soon as we have gathered medical supplies," he acknowledged, then signaled his son to follow.
(captain, a bit of info on the disaster site as to what we'd be finding would be useful...)

"Aye, Captain," replied the XO turning to the Conn officer. "You heard the Captain, Ensign." The Conn officer replied affirmatively and moved to take up a Martian orbit. Captain Gheskori then left the bridge and Parsons monitored the bridge. Parsons smiled at the familiar site as the ship began its orbit. The Commander smile quickly turned when Adam reminded himself why the Enzio had been called there.
After standard orbit had been achieved, Adam was summoned to the Captain's quarters.
Parsons arrived and entered upon being acknowledged. "Captain, you wanted to see me about an away team to the Martian surface?"

Parsons thought for a moment, "I think Commander Galwyn would be useful on the away mission. Did you have any other suggestions, Captain?

Ghes turned to Parsons after the Captain's exchange with the Martian Administrator, "Get down to the administrative HQ and make sure they're doing what they say they are." Parsons nodded and rose from his chair immediately.
Parsons headed to the transporter room. Commanders Matthew and Galwyn were already on the surface studying the phenomena. Shortly after Commander Parsons materialized in the lobby of the Martian Administration building, the Captain informed him that he had sent Enzio's Chief Medical Officer to assist the two officers already on site with the investigation.
The Enzio XO announced his presence to the receptionist and she communicated briefly with someone, presumably in the inner office. "The Administrator will be out to greet you momentarily," she said. "Please have a seat and make yourself comfortable." Adam paced slowly around the room looking at historical displays on the colonization of Mars.
A door hissed open and a man dressed as one would expect a colonial administrator in the Federation to be dressed approached Parsons. The man began to speak, "I am..." Parsons interupted, "the Martian Administrator." And I am Commander Adam Parsons of the USS Enzio. I have been sent by Captain Gheskori to liaise with your office, to ensure timely and accurate communication."
The Administrator looked briefly offended before speaking. "Yes, of course, please follow me." He escorted Parsons to what appeared to be a small damage control room with a few bureaucrats and scientists working on consoles and discussing the situation around a center table. Introductions were made and Parsons was assured that he would be brought up to speed.
Adam moved to a corner of the room and tapped his combadge. "Parsons to Gheskori."
"Go ahead, Commander."
"Captain, I have made contact with the administrator and am monitoring their response from a damage control room of sorts. They say they will be bringing me up to speed shortly."

Tiana had never been to Mars but she had been to several similar but uninhabited planets while doing her doctoral research (climatic variation and micro-gravitational anomalies). It had been a while since she had dealt with low gravity but she found things flooding back to her as she bounded across the surface. Under other circumstances she would have enjoyed the experience but not right now.
The crust had been ruptured, the centre of the disaster was fairly obvious but Tiana was going to riske being misled by what was obvious. If she heard hoofbeats she looked for horses, zebra and unicorns because it was a very strange universe out there and every day simply confirmed this. She started towards the 'centre' checking for stability and being careful not to move anything. When she reached the 'centre' she planned a spiralling search pattern moving outwards. What she did after that would depend on what she found on the first sweep.

Is there anything more that you need?" <Tag Walters>Seven hours later..."Captain, I have made contact with the administrator and am monitoring their response from a damage control room of sorts. They say they will be bringing me up to speed shortly."The XO's efficient summary raised Ghes's mood as he stood leaning next to the tactical rail. Finally, some control. "Very well, Commander. Push on them the angle that they should be making all those in affected areas aware of their situation. I don't think we should entirely trust Administrator Koscek to get it done." <Tag Parsons>As soon as the communication channel chirped closed, a grating alert signal began from the Ops station - occupied by one of James Matthew's staff. "Sir... I'm picking up unusual tectonic readings from near the equator." Ghes was off the tactical rail in an instant. No. Not now, surely. Marching to the command arena, he ordered the area brought up on the viewscreen, and then ordered the hazy, rust red image to be brought up to full magnification. Graphics overlayed on the screen, showing geographical contours in a grid formation. Small glyphs of alphanumeric text listed either side and key tectonic features were highlighted. "Is it another Jupiter-induced quake?" Ghes asked. The Captain of the Enzio didn't receive a straight answer for another fifteen minutes, as the bridge crew tried to figure out the origin of the tectonic instability. "No, sir. At least not directly," the Ops officer finally said, "It seems like it's a secondary quake-like event, perhaps caused by other recent quakes that were caused by Jupiter." Ghes acknowledged the Lieutenant and reopened the comm channel to Parsons. "Commander, we are reading a quake in the western equatorial region. What are they reading down there? Make sure any response is swift." He waited for Adam's reply. "Surface team, report." Ghes had now opened a channel to Tiana, Saryn and James who were at the (second) most-recent disaster site. He spoke again after their report. "Acknowledged. Be warned that there has been a recent subsidiary quake." The response was slow, delayed. Crackles came over the comm; it was hard for Ghes to ascertain what was currently taking place down there. "You have four hours." Ghes knew he didn't have to tell them that. But they were running out of time to collect the quake and radiation data. What was the nature of that which had caused it? <Tag All on surface>OOC: Come on all, let's think something up

Captain Gheskori responded to the XO's status update, "Very well, Commander. Push on them the angle that they should be making all those in affected areas aware of their situation. I don't think we should entirely trust Administrator Koscek to get it done."
"Aye, Sir," the Starfleet Commander replied. I'll do my best to show the Martian Administration the virtue of transparency." Parsons turned to see several small groups of scientists and bureaucrats huddled in different parts of the damage control room. "Who is in charge of Communications ... Public Affairs?" Adam said loudly. A few in the room looked up, but there was no immediate response. After Parsons had scanned the room for a moment, a human woman approached. She was not wearing typical scientist garb. "I am Lindsey Wellman, I am the Martian Public Affairs Director." The woman was attractive, well dressed, and had a pleasant demeanor.
"I am Commander Adam Parsons of the Starship ..."
"...Enzio, yes, I know who you are Commander," the Public Affairs officer cut him off.
"Good. It's good to meet you Ms. Wellman. I wish it were under better circumstances," Adam said.
"As do I, Commander. What can I do for you?"
"I am sure you're aware that I have been assigned to liaise with the Administration here. It is my understanding that the colonists have not been fully informed of the situation. Please prepare a statement outlining what we know so far," Commander Parsons requested in a way that made it sound like it was not optional.
Wellman smiled slightly, "has Administrator Koscek approved this?"
"At this point there is nothing for him to approve. Prepare the statement with the assistance of your team that are working on the problem and we will present it to the Administrator together," Parsons pressed.
"I don't think Koscek will be very receptive."
"We won't know until we ask him, besides, its the right thing to do," Adam persisted.
"My last instructions from Administrator Koscek were less than an hour ago and he was very clear that he did not want to panic the populace unnecessarily and that they should be given as little information as possible until the situation was understood and under control," the Public Affairs Officer informed Commander Parsons.
"And if it becomes necessary to evacuate part of the populace, or issue instructions after primary communication is knocked out by further tectonic activity, what then?"
Wellman looked conflicted.
"If you don't prepare the statement, I will, and I guarantee you it will not be as moderated as yours and it may be issued without your Administrator's approval," Adam said passionately but quietly.
"Very well," Wellman said with a slight grin, "I will prepare the statement and we will present it to the Administrator together."
"Thank you, that is all I ask," Adam responded.
The Martian Public Affairs Director walked off as Parsons received a communique from Captain Gheskori.
Parsons looked around and noticed the scientists scurrying from panel to panel somewhat frantically. He wondered how long he had missed the action while persuading Wellman.
"Yes, Captain, they have the same readings hear. Local response teams are being dispatched. You may want to send a team from the Enzio to assist," Parsons said, looking over shoulders at the panel displays.

Savin had lost his footing in the residual quake, unprepared for the possibility that the ground might be moving. They were inside the habdomes and both wondered since when hab-domes were needed. There had been none when Saryn had first come to Mars, and no EV-suits had been needed either. The young Vulcan tried to get back to his feet but the tremble had disoriented him such that he felt lightheaded.
Saryn reached to help his son up, then tapped his combadge as he heard Parson's report. "Savin and I are in one of the domes, ready to provide medical assistance," he reported, though he could hear the connection was disrupted. "Enzio, you are breaking up.." He tapped the tiny delta-shaped badge again, but the channel was gone.
"We are on our own," the older Vulcan stated gravely, as he had his son's attention. He gestured towards the ruined buildings. "The sooner we get there, the sooner we can assist."
"Agreed." Savin narrowed his eyes as he gazed into the distance, then closed his eyes for a moment. "So much misery," he mused after a few seconds, re-opening his eyes. "I can sense it, can you?"
Saryn knew that his eldest child was a sensitive esper, more so than himself, or even his wife or younger son. He entertained the idea that it possibly had to do with him being born almost deaf. He watched as the young man almost stumbled a second time as they got closer to the epicenter of the disaster area. Here there was only the two of them, to help several dozen of injured; this was going to take time. He tapped Savin on the arm to get his attention. "Are you all right?"
"Yes father. I will make a round and treat the minor injuries, you take care of the more severely injured." His eyes held a haunted look, his expression drawn. THe younger man seemed tense, nervous. "I am fine," he lied, before walking off.
Saryn stared after him, shook his head then started to walk among the injured, stopping to talk or kneel down next to a patient frequently, providing relief where possible, or offering release if someone was beyond saving and continued suffering was something Saryn was no fan of. At periodic intervals, he tried to raise the ship, but all he got was static. A feeling of dread was starting to creep up on him, the same feeling of dread that had visited him when he first set foot on Mars, all those years ago. At least, here there were no caves, no hidden bones and no XO who tried to kill him.

"Yes, Captain, they have the same readings hear. Local response teams are being dispatched. You may want to send a team from the Enzio to assist."
"Thank you, Commander. We're having some communication difficulties with the senior staff team." It could be the incident radiation from the recent events, Ghes reflected. "See if we can use the Mars administration building's comm array to reroute our signal, Commander, and be aware we have only four hours before we're due out of drydock."
<Tag Parsons>
Ghes was suddenly feeling irritable - which for him was quite unusual - at the lack of proper communications with the surface team at the disaster site. He did not have full control of this situation. He'd found himself gripping the arms of his chair; grabbing fistfuls of the air.
Might this, at last, be the infamous 'helplessness' that Captains often felt? Impatience and frustration, at being on the ship while the away team's status was unknown.
He eventually decided that if something inordinately bad had happened then he would hear about it - from somewhere - soon enough. At that moment, Ghes was alerted to a comm coming through from Jupiter station. He was almost surprised that their transceiver was working again. He retired to the ready room and had Jupiter patched through to his terminal. A darkened image with a man's face popped on to the terminal screen.
"Dr. Javey Fallan," Ghes nodded, smiling.
"Captain, good to see you again... Where the hell are you?" Fallan said. The strain was obvious in his voice, "We were expecting you almost twelve hours ago."
Ghes opened his mouth, but paused, and changed what he was about to say. "We are having some strengthening work done to sections of our hull. We will be there in approximately two hours... Are there not repair craft and other contingence vessels to help repair your station?"
Fallan seemed to grunt. "Some. But only a limited number have been allowed due to the quarantine. That's besides the point, however, as we need you to start investigating the Jupiter cloud areas in and around the Spot." The Doctor, looking at Gheskori on his screen, waved his hand out of the Captain's sight, "Not, assist us on the station..."
Gheskori seemed to be distracted for a moment. He swivelled back to Fallan after having turned to his side. "Very well, Doctor, we will be there as soon as we are able."
The comm ended after Fallan said his own goodbye, and Ghes returned to the bridge, heeding the alert given to him just moments ago. "Report, Ensign."
"Three more mini-events, Captain," the officer of the watch replied. "All in the equatorial region. The last one was within five kilometres of the surface team's beam-down coordinates."
"Get them back to the ship, now!" Ghes took his chair as the officer returned to his station. "Alert them. I am not partial to any particular way in which it might be done, just do it. And recommend to the administration that they evacuate those areas, if they're not doing it already." He opened a channel to the hull teams. "Mr. Walters. How much longer will the restructuring take? We will need to be getting powered up."

"Commander, Lieutenant, it's good to see you both safe and uninjured," Ghes said, putting down the PADDs he'd been holding. The two officers nodded. "We'll be leaving here as soon as Saryn and Tiana's teams have made it from the surface." Ghes smiled slightly. "Lieutenant Rubin, you are dismissed." The officer left, leaving Matthew standing facing Ghes. "I don't know what to make of all these events, Commander," Ghes confided, pensively regarding the matte-black desk before him. A long pause stretched out before Ghes spoke again, "Let Commander Parsons on the surface know we're leaving... Ah, and tell him to explain our departure from Mars orbit to the administrators without making it look like we're running. We're not, of course." <Tag Matthew>OOC: Moving ahead... (if you wish to, please back post to show how you arrived back on the ship, but if not, make sure you know where we are)With the officers recovered to the ship and Lieutenant Commander Walters' refit personnel having departed, the Enzio slipped the bonds of Martian drydock and began its push out towards Jupiter's orbit. Blackness fell in around them, only the stars piercing that night; it coldly persisted until they'd curved through the void to encounter Jupiter in its wider orbit. The Jovian shone bright on the viewscreen, dwarfing the stars in both apparent size and magnitude. "Jupiter Station is our side, sir." "Magnify," Ghes ordered. He was sat in the command chair, the senior officers and other bridge crew back about him - back to work and focussing hard on the task at hand. After a dizzying gradual zoom, Jupiter Station was revealed to them. It was off-axis with respect to their orientation. "Everything looks normal enough..." the Denobulan mused. But he knew that things could be quite different on the inside. He clapped his hands suddenly, standing from his chair. "Right, away team to the Station. I will be leading this one; no complaints please, Adam." Ghes laughed despite the rather dire circumstances. "Tiana, James, you are with me. Number one, please position the ship to ready it for atmospheric insertion of Jupiter." They materialised where agreed on the transporter room adjacent to the main operations room. Doctor Javey Fallan was on hand to greet them; Ghes saw how he immediately took note Tiana's presence, and smiled. "I'm sure you will be wanting to converse," he said to both, nodding to Tiana. He exchanged pleasantries with Fallan and then turned to the Ops chief. "Let's have a little look around shall we, Commander Matthew?" <Tag All> OOC: I know it's VERY quiet, but please come on.

Lt. Commander William Walters looked at Jupiter on the viewscreen while the computer ran the latest diagnostic on the nacelle pylons. When news of the Marsquakes hit and the reestablishment of communications with Jupiter Station he pushed the engineering crews as hard as he could, but some jobs just couldn’t go any faster. They got the ship ready in the twelve hours as promised, and now she was ready.
While the computer continued to work Will turned his attention to Jupiter Station itself. Life was returning to it, lights shining in the darkness, but the damage was visible. He wished that he had been called onto the away team, but with the Enzio preparing to descend into Jupiter the chief engineer was needed there more. Everything had to be perfect or the crushing gasses would squeeze the ship into a ball the size of a shuttle.
Finally, the computer finished the last of the diagnostics and had the results on the screen. Will looked it over and nodded. Turning to face the captain’s chair, “Everything is in the green Commander. We can make the drop at anytime.”

(OOC: This is a joint post between Gheskori and Saryn (and Savin), set before Gheskori, Tiana, and James's arrival on Jupiter Station.)
Now back on board, and actually glad to be off Mars, Saryn couldn't help but wonder what was going to happen to those that survived now. The danger of more quakes hadn't passed, and those that remained were still in danger. Blood and dust-covered, the two Vulcans made their way to the captain's readyroom. As they walked, Saryn caught a glimpse at his son's expression, and he didn't like what he saw. The younger man's expression was drawn, his eyes fixed on an invisible point a few meters ahead of him and he seemed to walking as if on auto-pilot. What was more worrysome, was that he was utterly quiet. "Savin?" He touched his son's shoulder but the younger man made no response other than to flinch away. What had he seen? Saryn wondered, as they stepped onto the bridge. "Captain you wished to see us?"
Gheskori was studiously working his chair's arm-panel, and without looking up he breathed a sigh of relief at the voices he heard. Saryn and his son were the last surface team back on board, and the final team to report to him. "Yes, Doctor," he smiled, "Please, let's use my ready room."
They entered, Ghes offering the pair the two seats opposite and taking his own chair. "I'm glad that everyone's safely back aboard. We're now halfway to Jupiter.. Should be there in a couple of minutes. Did you discover anything of use on the surface. Any curiosities in the radiation damage?"
Saryn couldn't suppress a quite visible shudder. "The radiation damage was severe but the damage from the quakes was worse. There were many who were beyond our ability to help. I do not know if there was anything curious about it captain, I am sorry, it is beyond my level of expertise. I did, however find being on Mars very...disconcerting. The last time I was there, there were no quakes but there were caves. Steep caves... they were safe but..."
"Father is afraid of heights," Savin supplied in a whisper, his eyes still taking no focus on either man before him.
Gheskori looked at both of them. The older vulcan seemed - if anything - slightly spooked from his time on the surface. Ghes felt that he was encountering some deeper layer - like an expanding bubble released from the confining pressure of vulcan stoicism - in the relation between these two vulcans, and of the experiences they'd had in their quite remarkable timeframe-jumping lives.
"I'll consult Commander Galwyn when we arrive on Jupiter Station." Ghes actually dusted his hands off to indicate he was sweeping that issue away. "So, did you have any trouble with caves, back then?" he ventured.
"Caves? No, not the caves, it was...descending into them. Though our pilot back then was ingenious. She...blindfolded me. Savin was not there, he was on the ship. The situation was very strenuous as the captain and the communications officer were acting strange. The latter deemed it necessary to capture and interrogate me." He paused. "It took a great deal of trust on my part to allow them to lead me back up." Saryn shuddered again. "Suffice to say, Mars does not hold good memories for me." He frowned. "Something is wrong with Savin..."
The Denobulan Captain listened with fascination at what Saryn was saying. A glimpse into an older time, two centuries in the past in the early days of Starfleet. It was extremely interesting - if not slightly alarming - but Ghes thought it best not to delve further. He looked at Savin - still as a statue. "What's the matter, Savin?" he asked the young vulcan directly.
Savin gave no indication he had noticed he was being addressed. Though he seemed to be looking at the captain, he didn't really see the man.
"Savin?" Saryn nudged him to get his attention, "the captain asked you a question." As he spoke, he signed the earlier question.
The younger Vulcan simply shook his head, saying nothing. His expression was drawn, if not haunted.
Saryn sighed; he'd not experienced this behaviour from his son before, it was as new to him, as it was to the captain. He never even behaved like this when Numike caught him by surprise or got a little too caught up in their battles. He cast Ghes a worried look. "I do not understand.."
Ghes's face took on an expression of concern. "Has he been well recently? Perhaps you should take him to sickbay." It did seem to Ghes though that this was far from anything physical. Savin looked emotionally deadened - if that was possible for a vulcan. Ghes thought he'd seen similar body language in Denobulan soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome.
"Did something happen on the surface?" Ghes asked Savin, having his father relate what'd been said and looking for a response. "Was there anything you saw?"
As Ghes spoke, so Saryn translated in sign language. Savin nodded slowly, swallowing a few times. I saw so many dead, so many disfigured people because of radiation, and injury. During the last quake, I saw a woman get crushed. There was nothing I could do. I almost got crushed too.
In return, Saryn spoke when his son gestured back to him. "I should not have taken him," he added, only for Ghes to see or hear.
Ghes nodded, empathising with the Doctor's position. He stood from his chair, "We couldn't have known more quakes were going to strike right then. Is there anything you can do to help him recover; besides time?" Ghes saw that they were dealing with a victim of shock, however, it still struck him as a little odd. Could such sights really affect a vulcan like this, and to this degree?

"If it is shock, I will need to monitor him," Saryn replied, "shock is a very dangerous condition. However, I believe there is more to it. I have seen my son in shock before, and this is not it." He studied the younger man, watching him. Savin didn't seem to notice, he was sitting motionless, his hands folded in his lap, as if he were far away with his thoughts. It was almost as if he was asleep with his eyes open. "What it is, however, I do not know, I have never seen this before."
"I recommend we get your son to sickbay, Doctor," Gheskori said, walking around his desk and opening his ready room door. He beckoned the vulcans to the bridge, and they headed down to sickbay. The Captain felt compelled - for whatever reason - to accompany both of them, rather than remain on the bridge.
Sickbay was already in a heightened state of alert due to the Enzio's arrival at Jupiter Station. Ghes was satisfied to see the crew were automatically preparing for any requests of medical assistance from the Station. "So, what do you suggest, Doctor Saryn?" he turned to the CMO.
Saryn assisted his son onto a bed and eased him down. "For now, I will take scans and make sure he is comfortable and is administered sufficient fluids." He watched his son for a moment, before glancing up at the monitor. "Other than that, I am at a loss captain. I do not know what he saw, exactly, or who he spoke to. We were seperated as we administered assistance where required or requested. All I know is, is that this is erratic behaviour for him. Do you have any suggestions? Any...news, that may be of assistance in my diagnosis?"
Ghes was tempted to just respond negative but held his tongue. He let out a breath and furrowed his brow, thinking hard for anything that could actually be of use. "I can only think, that Jupiter itself might be involved, if only in terms of the radiation that was incident on Mars." Ghes spoke lightly, "Borrowing from your vulcan logic, if you'd allow me, in the absence of any 'normal' explanation, the remaining improbable explanation must be correct, right? Perhaps the disturbances in Jupiter have something to do with this. But then again, perhaps your neural scan will reveal something more telling."
Ghes purposely turned his eyes to the biobed, signifying his waiting for the results of the scan - however long they might take.
"That was logic applied by the fictional character Sherlock Holmes," Saryn replied quietly, allowing for a faint smile. He too waited as he watched the read-out, then frowned. "Captain..." He pointed at an oddity on the scan, then pulled up a scan taken a few days before as a test to calibrate the equipment. "There is a discrepancy. Can you send this to the science department and have Commander Cet take a look? Perhaps she can make anything of it." He studied the result in more detail. "It is almost...as if he is not alone in his own mind. If I were to meld with him now, and you took a scan, you would, under normal circumstances, find both our patterns. But there is no-one else here, this is most unusual. I will keep him sedated for now, until we know more."
Ghes smiled and nodded slightly at Saryn, masking his apprehension at this finding behind his eyes. "Very well. Keep a close eye on him - of course, you don't need to be told that." Ghes looked around sickbay, trying to keep the discomfort from his face. "A foreign presence in his neural scan? What could be causing this?" He hardly knew he'd spoken aloud.
The Vulcan doctor watched him go, before focussing his efforts on his eldest offspring again. He hoped someone would keep Numike out of sickbay, because she could be getting in the way. Yet he knew she adored her big brother, and if anything, adolised him. Perhaps, he mused, she could be of assistance, if he figured out how.

OOC: RL + lack of inspiration = no posts. I'm not sure That I've interpreted the story correctly so I apologise in addvance if this make no sense.
Tiana walked on her survey path. The martian dust scuffing up around her boots. They were away from the settlements here but she could still see the glow of lights on the horizon.
Suddenly the ground beneath her feet rocked and rolled, caught mid step Tiana was thrown to the ground where she tucked and rolled absorbing the worst of the impact but covering herself in dust. She stayed down while the quake continued. It was the first time she had actually been caught in a ground quake despite several visits to seimically active worlds that had required training on what to do in event of a quake.
When the ground stopped moving Tiana activated her comm. =/\=Commander Galwyn to Enzio=/\= She was rewarded with static. she tried again and got the same result. She used her tricorder to check the comm. Assuming that a liberal coating of iron oxide rich martian soil hadn't impared the tricorder, and it shouldn't have, then the communicator itself was functioning fine. She did a quick survey of the atmosphere and found it charged which would interfere with the comms. She set a routine to check the comm link every three minutes and then settled in to complete her survey.
Eventually the ship responded. =/\=Enzio here Commander. Report your status.=/\=
=/\=I'm fine, just a bit dusty. The survey is finished ready to come backk aboard.=/\=
=/\=Okay, Commander, stand by.=/\=
The martian landscape dissolved around Tiana to be replaced by the Enzio's transporter room. It was good to be back.
