History
Paul Drew was on both on the 21st February 2335 (SD 40.0221) in New England on the planet Mars. His family had a long history of service to Starfleet, his grandfather, Richard, was a highly decorated Starfleet Captain and both his parents, George and Elizabeth were Starfleet Officers. This family background ensured that Drew and his two younger siblings were brought up in an environment that was very aware of Starfleet and its principles of peaceful space exploration.
Both Drew’s parents worked at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards where they would allow their children to watch as new starships were built and launched. From these experiences, Drew became familiar with Engineering principles and starship design from an early age. Besides this interest, Drew also had a keen interest in history, both recent and pre-modern.
By the age of eighteen Drew was attending Mars University, studying Earth history with every intention of pursuing a career as a historian. However during his final year at university tragedy struck when his grandfather’s ship was destroyed in one of the last battles of the first Federation-Cardassian war. This was to be Drew’s first experience of Cardassian aggression and it would not e his last. Grief stricken at the death of his beloved grandfather, Drew switched his career ambitions and following his graduation from university enrolled at Starfleet Academy.
Studying in the Engineering field, with an emphasis on ship operations, Drew was well placed to become an Operations Officer. However, many of his lecturers at the Academy suggested that he should consider a career in the command track, despite this encouragement, Drew ignored their advice and when he graduated in 2356, he was wearing the golden uniform of an engineer.
It is true to say that Drew excelled at the Academy, he graduated within the top 10% of his class and was popular and well liked with both his lecturers and fellow students. He was elected to the student cadet council during his second year and during his third year at the Academy he was editor of the student newspaper. These valuable administration skills were to serve him later during his career.
After graduating from the Academy, Drew was assigned to the USS South Carolina, under the command of Captain John Holiday. Due to her small size, now Ensign Drew was able to take the position of Chief Operations Officer. Paul’s experiences on the South Carolina were not happy; he did not get along with his new commanding officer, and found it difficult to adjust to life on the starship. After only a year, he requested a transfer.
His next assignment was aboard the USS Sutherland, a ship that Paul instantly connected with. Commanded by Captain Andrew Tate, Paul was assigned as an Assistant Operations Officer, under the supervision of Lieutenant Commander Alex Smith. The Sutherland saw existence service, exploring the furthest reaches of the Federation and the final frontier.
When he was a Lieutenant on the Sutherland, Drew was sent on an away mission to explore a disserted outpost that had previously transmitted a distress call. The team was commanded by Commander Smith, unfortunately it turned out to be a trap. The Sutherland was ambushed and forced to leave the area, temporarily abandoning the away team. The outpost was subsequently invaded by a hostile force and Commander Smith was killed in a fire fight. This left Drew as the senior ranking member of the team, and it is the first instance that he demonstrated his leadership skills. Taking command of the team, he was able to find them a defendable location of the outpost, and fight off the hostile force until the Sutherland could return.
Upon his return to the Sutherland, Captain Tate granted Paul a field promotion to Lieutenant Commander and he was assigned as the Acting Chief Operations Officer. It was at this time that a new science officer Lieutenant Joanna Lockhart was assigned to the Sutherland. Drew and the Chief Tactical Officer Lieutenant Commander Rick Edwards both took a liking to Lieutenant Lockhart, and a fierce rivalry developed between the two. This was made worse when Lieutenant Lockhart subsequently chose Drew, and the two married not long after. Note: Commander Graeme Janeway of the USS Fang claimed to have experienced some of this time period when he and Drew were caught in a temporal anomaly.
Drew was to remain with the Sutherland for ten years until he and his wife decided to start. With the birth of their first child, a daughter named Tammy, the proud parents requested a transfer to a planet based assignment. Drew himself followed in his own parents footsteps and became a staff member at Utopia Planitia, serving as a senior starship designer. When the Borg threat escalated, Drew played a key part in the development of many starships, including the Akira, Defiant and Intrepid class starships. However, it was the top secret Prometheus class project that Drew was to become most associated.
When the Dominion War broke out, Drew requested a return to field duty and was reassigned to the Sutherland, which was now serving as the Second Fleet’s Flagship. The ship was involved in many of the battles of the war, and suffered a great deal of damage and the crew much hardship. In one such encounter, Drew was leading an undercover away mission on a Cardassian station, unfortunately the away team was discovered, and Drew was to spend the reminder of the war in a Cardassian prison camp.
His experiences of the camp still haunt him to this day, upon his rescue he had to go undergo extensive rehabilitation, and even now still holds a grudge against the Cardassians, who not only killed his grandfather, but also tortured and staved him for months.
Following his return to duty Drew took the decision to transfer to the command track, and became a Strategic Operations Officer. He returned to the Prometheus Class project, and commanded at least one of the shakedown cruises of the prototype USS Prometheus. Much of his involvement with the project has been classified under sealed documents that will not be available until 2450.
Whatever his involvement with Prometheus, by the 2380s, Drew had been promoted to the rank of Captain, and assigned his first official command, the USS Fang. During this time, Drew was also recruited by the specialist Starfleet organisation known as Section 47.
The Fang saw extensive service throughout the 2380s, one of Drew’s first missions as Captain was to travel to Cardassia, where the new leader of the Cardassian Government had requested peace talks. This was however a trap, and the Fang was soon captured by the Cardassians, using his knowledge gained from working with the Project Prometheus team, Drew was able to regain command of his vessel. However, this experience did nothing to change his views about Cardassians.
It was also during this period that Drew had his first recorded experience with the rouge Starfleet organization known as Section 31. He was captured by Section 31 operatives, and taken to their base on Mars. Luckily, the Fang was able to rescue Drew before Section 31 were able to do anything, although they were unable to capture the operatives. At some point during this mission, Drew’s First Officer, Commander KezTrek (a Vulcan) and Betazoid Counsellor Becky Triano attempted to establish a telepathic link with the captured Drew to discover his location. KezTrek was able to make telepathic contact with her Captain, and she reports that she was able to control his body for a period of time. As a result of this experience, both Drew and KezTrek now share a telepathic link, that allows them to sense what the others emotions.
When Commodore T’na, commander of the Gamma Squadron of the Section 47 First Fleet retired, Drew was promoted to Commodore, and given command of the Gamma Squadron.
In the late 2380s, the Fang was undergoing a refit, under Drew’s supervision. While this was happening, the reminder of the senior staff decided to take some R n R on Risa. However, on the way there shuttle was intercepted and the senior staff were imprisoned on a panel colony. When the Fang’s refit was complete, Drew took the ship to search for his missing crewmembers, unfortunately the Fang was itself also captured when it experienced technical difficulties during an encounter with a hostile force. Drew gave the order to abandon ship, but remained aboard himself. He then joined his senior staff on the panel colony.
Note: Some of the following information is based purely on the eye witness accounts of the Fang crew, and the testimony of Commodore Paul Drew. The logs of the USS Fang have been able to confirm some of the authenticity of their account.
[Apparently, in one possible time frame, the Fang senior crew were killed in the prison camp, except for First Officer KezTrek, who was able to escape. KezTrek blamed herself for the deaths of her fellow crewmembers, and spent years trying to think how to save them. Finally, some twenty years later she found a way. Now an Admiral, she took command of the USS Fang-B during its launching ceremony, and took the ship back in time to just before the original Fang first encountered the hostile force. She argued with Drew not to take the Fang any further, and to allow her to rescue the captured senior staff. The results of that meeting are unknown, but when the Fang crew recaptured their ship they reported seeing two other Federation starships, one apparently identical to the Fang who destroyed the hostile aliens ship and base before they could engage (and apparently kill) the present Fang crew. After this, the Fang-B emitted a tachyon pulse that merged the two Fang’s together, during this procedure Drew claimed to have the memories of his counterpart aboard the other Fang. The Fang-B was subsequently destroyed while providing cover for the orginial Fang to escape the area.]
Following this mission, KezTrek decided she would like to try her own hand at commanding a starship. It is possible the knowledge of a future Admiral KezTrek gave her confidence in her own abilities to command a starship. In their last official mission together as Captain and First Officer, Drew and KezTrek encountered a hostile alien, who took control of KezTrek’s husband, and tried to murder Drew. KezTrek was able to stop this from happening, and saved the life of Drew.
After this, on Drew’s recommendation, KezTrek assumed command of the Academy Training ship, USS Hanson. At her promotion ceremony, Drew gave KezTrek his own fourth pip to pin to her collar. This was however not the last time that the two friends were to serve together.
With Anna Shipley now serving as First Officer, the Fang continued her mission to explore the final frontier. In 2389, the Fang encountered a Borg cube, fearing a Borg invasion of the Federation, the ship tried to engage warp drive to send warning. However, before this could happen, the Fang was attacked, and Commodore Drew was captured.
As the Fang was attempting to return to Federation space to gather reinforcements, they encountered a Federation shuttle that was carrying the Section Admiral. The SA promptly assumed command of the Fang himself, and led a mission to rescue Commodore Drew. However, Drew did not need rescuing; he had actually made contact with the resistance movement known as Unimatrix Zero. When the Fang recovered him, they were able to help Unimatrix Zero take control of a Borg base in the area. Following his performance in this mission, Drew was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral.
As while as being promoted to the Admiralty, Drew was assigned as Executive Officer of the Section 47 First Fleet. He was also awarded a position on the organisations command staff, originally working in the Personnel department.
A few months after these events, the Fang was dispatched to investigate a strange anomaly near the Bajorun wormhole. They discovered that someone had been attempting to modify the wormhole with proto-matter. Just after the Fang entered the wormhole, they were stopped by the USS Hanson, Captain KezTrek boarded the Fang, and on the orders of Rear Admiral Rick Edwards arrested Drew for the unlawful experimentation of proto-matter. It was at this point that a temporal anomaly was created and both Drew and Tactical Officer Graeme Janeway were knocked unconscious. Commander Janeway claimed afterwards that he had experienced an earlier time in Drew’s life when he was serving aboard the Sutherland, with his future wife, and the then Lieutenant Commander Rick Edwards. When Commander Janeway regained consciousness, he reported that the Sutherland had been experimenting with proto-matter in the past, and that Admiral Edwards was trying to resume those experiments and had in fact framed Drew for the crime.
Drew was cleared of all charges, and resumed command of the Fang. However, evidence suggests another time line may have been created as a result of the proto-matter, where the Fang itself was destroyed, and Admiral Drew demoted back to Captain for his involvement in the scandal. However this has not been proven.
Soon after this, Drew was unknowingly captured by the Dominion and replaced with a Changeling. The Changeling Drew resigned from command of the Fang, and took a position at Starfleet Command. After a year, the Changeling Drew returned to Section 47, and attempted to destroy the Academy complex, however he was stopped by Starfleet Security before he could put his plan into effect. It took Starfleet months to find what they believed to be the real Paul Drew, and after counselling, Drew was assigned to Starbase Assailant.
However, when the Starship Copenhagen, commanded by Drew was transported to the mirror universe, it was discovered that Starfleet had actually recovered Drew’s mirror universe counterpart. The real Paul Drew had been his captive for years. Ambassadors Tedak and Saarek, who had been observers of the Copenhagen were able to rescue the real Paul Drew, and the three of them returned to the real universe.
By this point, Paul Drew had been away from our universe for nearly three years, and he had to undergo a period of retraining. Following the completion of this, he requested command of a starship, it had after all been his counterparts who had reassigned from command of the Fang. He was therefore offered command of the Academy Training ship USS Hanson, ironically the very ship his First Officer KezTrek had left the Fang to command. KezTrek was now commanding the USS Tiger Shark, so Drew accepted the offer.
When arriving on the Hanson, Drew was greeted by his new First Officer, S’reena Hope. The two have a very stormy relationship, and often have disagreements; however, they have formed a good working relationship. Not long after Drew’s assignment to the Hanson, a new group of senior officers were assigned to the ship.
After accepting command of the Hanson, Drew was promoted in rank to Vice Admiral, much to the delight of S’reena who staged a mini mutiny for the promotion ceremony. Unfortunately, just after these events, S’reena committed a real mutiny and stole a shuttlecraft to rescue Admiral Karynn McCormick when she believed Drew was not doing enough to save the Admiral. As a result of her actions, Drew’s and S’reena’s working relationship is now at an all time low, with the trust between them destroyed. It took a long time for the damage to be repaired and the two struggled to work together for a number of months. It was only after S’reena saved Drew’s life during an assassination attempt that trust was restored between the two.
By this time Drew had also been reappointed to the Command Staff of Section 47 and in 2392 was offered the position of Academy Commandant. Along with this new assignment Drew also assumed command of Starbase Conqueror, the traditional command posting of the Commandant, although Drew continued to serve as the Hanson CO.
The start of 2393 proved to be very eventful for Drew, with the breakdown of his marriage, and the shocking discovery that his eldest daughter, who had been involved in a romantic relationship with Starbase Assailants Chief of Security, was pregnant and had been abandoned by her lover. Relations between Drew and Tammy had always been difficult, but these sad events led to a further deterioration in relationship between father and daughter, ultimately resulting in them not speaking for many years.
During a reshuffle of the Academy system in Section 47, the decision was taken to downsize to just one training vessel. Drew was therefore requested to switch his flag to the USS Hepta, which had been the first Academy ship assigned to Section 47. However, Starfleet continued to restructure its Academy programs and just a few months later decided to further reduce the Academy commitment to Section 47 withy even the Hepta itself eventually being decommissioned. At this point, Drew was offered command of the USS Nevada and was reassigned to head up the Communications Corps of Section 47. Drew was also reassigned from his position of Third Fleet CO, which had been disbanded, and began Fleet CO for Special Projects.
Drew’s time on the Nevada was short, but eventful. Following the decision of Section Admiral Duke Nova to retire, Drew was named as his replacement and subsequently promoted to the rank of Section Admiral. For a brief time, Drew continued to have his flag on the Nevada, but quickly found that the pressures of commanding both a ship, and the whole of Section 47 was too much and he relinquished his command in early 2395.
Upon standing down as the Nevada CO, Drew took up the position of Starbase 47, as is traditional for Section Admirals. For a time, Drew was very content with conducting fleet business from behind a desk, enjoying the change of pace from the hectic life of a starship, however he soon grew restless feet. In 2396, he re-commissioned the USS Fang to active service, after the ship had spent a number of years gathering dust in the shipyard. Unfortunately, his duties prevent him from taking the Fang on extended deep space missions and instead the ship serves as his flagship during fleet actions and as his primary means of transport when visiting areas of Section 47 space. The Fang also acts as one of the support craft for Starbase 47.
Drew has now held the position of Section Admiral for a number of years and has grown comfortable in his role, although many of his friends and former colleagues have opted for retirement; Drew currently shows no signs of doing this.
