"Let's wait 'til you arrive shall we, Captain? It shouldn't be more than thirty minutes, I would've thought."
"That sounds about right."
The Commodore nodded quickly. "Yes, yes, I expect that that's correct. How are your crew anyway? I understand you've taken some casualties; some rather unusual ones?"
"Yes," Ghes replied, "Seventeen dead, forty-nine injured, and three... afflicted, crewmembers: the tactical chief, a junior environmental technician and a member of sickbay's staff, the CMO's son."
"I see..." the Commodore fiddled with the PADD stylus in his hand, "And these crewmembers were... occupied, in some way? Neural energy, or some such?"
Ghes rolled his eyes. The Commodore may as well have been riding a horse, such was his level of concentration on this dialogue or lack thereof. "We believe that they were possessed by an alien intelligence, yes, or at least something that approximated functioning brain-waves. It may not have been life at all."
"And they are well?" the Commodore asked tiredly.
"They are well enough at the moment but there is some long-term uncertainty. We hope they can make full recoveries but that might rely on Dr. Fallan's follow-up research, or it may lie solely with them, something purely mental that will get them back to full health." Ghes shook his head, "Who knows? Tourists, maybe. We don't have enough information at this point to be able to tell. There are also some issues regarding the killing of a couple engineers by the CMO's son..."
The Commodore let out a slow, raspy sigh, "Captain, I will see you in approximately thirty minutes time for a more complete debrief and a plan of action regarding the Great Red Spot, the security of Mars and of Jupiter Station. Hodges out."
Gheskori shook his head and poked his way through the menu screens to his personal messages.
His cousin Palarxi appeared on his terminal's screen. "Gheskori. Lasika's condition continues to worsen." The tall Denobulan looked behind at the scene of the hospital. "I'm not insisting, but you should really come back to Denobula. She needs you here, cuz."
With a meaningful look Palarxi signed off the communique. Gheskori put his head in his hands, trying to calm the dizzy feeling he felt in his skull.
Was this always the way of reality? Stumbling through blindly, walking into rooms, those deceiving psychogeographical constructs, and making fateful choices that could never be undone. Why was it not possible to make all choices simultaneously, and then decide, objectively and with the calm detachment of a luminescent god, which course of action was the best?

Upon his own insistence, Savin had been escorted to the brig after having been given something proper to wear. The walk to the cell had been slow because the young Vulcan still didn't have all that much energy to spend. After all, he had been clinically dead for several minutes and had been shot with a phaser set to kill as well as set to heavy stun and that too had taken it's toll on his body.
Breathing was rapture still, but he made do and when they reached the brig he was out of breath. Surprisingly, the guards that had escorted him were quite gentle with him and even assisted him onto the cot, and provided him with extra blankets should he get cold. While appreciative of the gesture, Savin was resolved not to touch those comforts. Deep down he felt he didn't deserve any of the pleasant treatment he was given.
Technically, none of this had been his fault as his actions had been controlled by an alien entity that had taken possession of his free will. Even so, Savin felt he could've tried harder to overcome her, and prevent the damage he had done. He experienced extreme remorse over having killed one engineer, and having injured several others. Not only remorse, but shame as well. As a Vulcan, though from the warrior clans, he was supposed to be a pacifist yet here he had willfully and purposefully killed another living being.
Tears ran down his face as he reflected on the memory, for he remembered it all, perfectly so. She had seen to it, that he'd remember everything. The young Vulcan looked up as he sensed someone standing close by and nearly fell over when something small and white flew at him. Cool skin was pressed against his throat and he felt the grate of teeth though there was nothing like the familiar sting. "Numike," he murmured as he wrapped his arms around her. "Do not bite, I am not strong enough."
Cool fingers touched his face as she released him, gently wiping the tears away. "I wouldn't bite you like that," she promised him, "I'm so glad you're alive. I saw you, when you were brought in and I thought we'd lost you forever. Don't ever scare us like that again brother, ever." Her pale blue eyes held a note of seriousness in them as she regarded her Vulcan brother. "Or I will bite you..."
That earned her the smallest hint of a smile, but it wasn't an earnest one. "Perhaps you should bite then, because I cannot make that promise. Why are you here Numike?"
"Why, to see you of course, and to see if you're well. Do you need anything? You look cold." She reached and pulled a blanket across his shoulders, folding it together at the front. "You need to keep warm or you'll be sick again. Father says you have to keep warm you hear?"
"I do not," he deadpanned, "but I will...try. I am not experiencing discomfort Numike. You should not be here, I wish to be left alone."
Hurt spread across the girl's features as she listened to him speak, hearing the note of regret in his voice and the pain she knew he was in. In a fit of rage, she slapped him, hard. "Fine. Wallow in your misery then. But no-one thinks you're to blame so I don't understand why you do this to yourself. That wasn't you, when all that happened and everyone knows that. And everyone accepts it, everyone but you. I'll come back when you talk sense Savin. Goodbye."
Savin watched the girl leave and watched the forcefield snap back into place. Sighing to himself, he curled up under the blanket, finally admitting to himself that yes, he was cold.

Following on from my last mission post
"Commander, we've all been under a lot of pressure, literally and figuratively. We needed solutions in a hurry, and if it cost us a few pieces of equipment so be it. We don't need to go to warp and Spacedock is just around the corner so to speak. Anything you did will be fixed in no time flat." Tiana was grateful that Commander Walters was being so reasonable. He couldn't have got any more sleep in the last few days than she had. She managed a small smile. They would no doubt end up working closing on something technical sooner or later and he wasn't angry at her. He rested his hands on the console, head bowed. "What you can do for me is figure out just what the hell was going on in that storm. Until we know what it was someone's well-being in question, and until we have some facts to back up what we've been trying to say he won't listen."
"I will do my best, I promise you that." She sighed silently and the silence stretched. It seemed the conversation was over. She turned to leave, as she started walking away he started speaking to her again.
"Commander?"
She stopped and looked back, he was looking at her and seemed to be smiling. "If you want to help with the repairs you could help collect some bailing wire." With that he winked. Tiana raised an eyebrow accepting the challenge. "I think I can manage that."

Later
Tiana had slept, showered and was having breakfast when she heard the news of Savin's confinement. She did not know the details of what had occurred but she knew he literally hadn't been himself. She also knew what that was like.
She went down to the Brig and was granted permission to see him. "Good afternoon Savin."
"I remember you coming to see me when I was under arrest, it helped and I wanted to do the same for you. I am sorry that I have the opportunity though"
Tiana sat down on the floor and leaned against the wall. "I'm happy to stay and talk, although I'll leave if you want."

On his way back across the gigantic promenade, Ghes was beset upon by the colourfully-dressed clientele and the myriad different species that promoted their businesses and tried to usher passers-by into their stores. While Earth Spacedock was meant primarily as a hub for Starfleet operations, a large section of the promenade was given over to private concerns, and thus enterprises from all over the quadrant took advantage of the Spacedock's location and traded like old-world conformist ants. Although the trade of any legal tender should be prohibited by Federation guidelines, allowances were made as ESD was such an important centre for the quadrant, for over three trillion people.
Ghes found this darkly amusing. The humans thought it was important anyway, and even though when they co-founded the Federation they had promised to build their society on mutual respect, and a firmly humble view of their position in the universe, Ghes knew all too well of their capacity for egocentricism. It was... offputting, at times.
"And Denobulans are never self-centred, right?" a woman's voice floated over to him.
He halted as she stepped in front of him, a broad smile on her face. He didn't recognise her. "You're Betazoid," he allowed, in truth feeling somewhat violated. A total stranger, interloping on his stream of thoughts. Anger coalesced inside him.
She looked horrified. "I'm sorry. I didn't intend to intrude on your thoughts, just that your were hard to miss. Such bitterness..." she trailed off. "But yes, I'm Betazoid. I'm sorry, sir. Have a good day."
"Wait a moment," Ghes's voice skipped on the air. "Was it really that obvious."
She looked back, "Oh yes, for someone as telepathically sensitive as me, at least. But everyone's allowed a bad day without having a total stranger, as you thought it, invading their minds."
"You were rude," Ghes admitted, looking rueful. Still though, he felt slightly affronted that not only had this lady eavesdropped, as it were, but now she was assuming the reason for his mood, belittling it with generalisations. Under ordinary circumstances, such things would make him furious. It was a better emotion to feel than to allow himself the thought that he could be burying his head in the sand.
"Touchy," she said quickly, and then slapped a hand to her mouth, shocked at her latest invasion.
Gheskori laughed. He observed now that she couldn't help herself... And such things were endearing. He stepped towards this petite Betazoid, his face animated, engaged with something suddenly exciting, eagerly adapting and reaching for something without substance. Thoughts of his ailing wife slid unashamedly from his mind, leaving not a single mark on his conscience. "What is your name?" he asked.
"Beia." She seemed surprised, and Ghes wondered how he'd disguised his thoughts. "Of course, you don't need to know that I already know yours."
"Quite," Ghes said, his face burning. They walked down the promenade, talking of the things that weren't so obvious. The Enzio, and Lasika, could wait for a while.
Gheskori then had the absurd thought that perhaps they would wait forever, and in vain, while he sojourned on this steel monolith.
OOC: A few days yet til the next mission. Shore leave currently in effect on Earth Spacedock.

In a recently rare break around Main Engineering, Commander Walters stood next to the warp core with the entirety of his staff gathered around. Standing next to him with a huge smile on his face was GevlynSin th’Ran, head of Spacedock’s starship repair division and one of the rare Captains of Engineering.
“And so, in recognition of not only managing to prevent the destruction of the USS Enzio and bringing it back in one piece, we the Starship Repair Division do hereby award Commander Walters with the ‘Engineer’s Nightmare Award’ for his bringing it back in such a sorry state that she was one step away from being scrapped.” the Andorian engineer announced, handing Will a small statuette while his staff applauded and cheered.
Will turned the award in his hand, looking at it for a moment before holding it high for everyone to see. The gold figure on top of the base was that of a grease-covered engineer brandishing a hydrospanner over his head like a club and holding a frustrated look on the face. It was a humorous award, one shared only between engineers. It was true that the Enzio was in rough shape, even after a week in Spacedock most of the hull was still in the process of being replaced, the new warp coils needed to be aligned, the frame restored, and the high-pressure modifications removed. From the outside the ship looked like a broken toy.
Still, the mood was jovial and morale high. The crew of the Enzio had accomplished the impossible, diving kilometers into the atmosphere of a class-J planet, stopping some sort of entity that was causing havoc all throughout the Solar System, and survived (barely) the worst disaster possible while doing the prior achievements. The Engineer’s Nightmare Award may be a humorous award that no chief engineer wanted to get, but it was well earned. “Thank you Captain Sin for the Award, I can guarantee you it will be displayed in an appropriate location.” Walters made a motion of throwing the statuette down the warp core’s shaft, an act that brought a few chuckles. “Alright everyone, there’s still a ton of work left to do so let’s get to it!” The crowd dispersed, the room alive with the chatter of dozens of beings from the Enzio and Spacedock’s teams chatting about the repairs, the award, and anything else that came to mind. Will went to his office with Captain Sin close behind.
The pair of engineers took seats on either side of the desk and relaxed, the statuette taking a spot on a corner. A pair of drinks quickly found their way into their hands and the chitchat turned to business. “Have you been able to look over the new additions to your staff?” Captain Sin asked.
Will nodded. “I thought it was a little early for the crew rotation, but considering what we went through, our extended stay here at Spacedock, and no way of knowing how long before we get to a base it makes sense that Starfleet would do the transfer now. Most have already arrived and jumped right in with the repairs, though a few haven’t arrived yet.”
The Andorian engineer frowned as he slipped from his glass. “It should’ve been long enough, do you know what is keeping them?”
“It looks like they’re from border worlds, or were on leaves far enough from Earth that it’s taking extra time for them to return. The crewmen they’re replacing haven’t complained about having to stick around after their transfer was supposed to happen so it hasn’t been a big deal.” Will sipped from his own glass for a moment and reached for a padd. “I can’t wait for the new structural specialist though. His profile was quite interesting.” He handed it across the desk.
Sin looked at the padd and his eyebrows rose in surprise. “Lieutenant Ihlin Fic’jara, a S’ti’ach? That’ll cause a bit of a surprise around the engine room I’m sure.”
Walters was all grin. “A meter tall, blue-furred biped with a nasty sense of humor and limitless energy? He sounds like a load of fun.” Both of them laughed and raised their glasses.
“To Starfleet engineers.” Captain Sin toasted, and their glasses clinked together.

She went down to the Brig and was granted permission to see him. "Good afternoon Savin."
Savin looked up at her, but his expression didn't change other than that it warmed ever so slightly. "Tiana," he acknowledged.
"I remember you coming to see me when I was under arrest, it helped and I wanted to do the same for you. I am sorry that I have the opportunity though."
The Vulcan minutely inclined his head in acknowledgement to her words. "Thank you," he answered softly, "and I regret you having this opportunity as well."
Tiana sat down on the floor and leaned against the wall. "I'm happy to stay and talk, although I'll leave if you want."
Savin sat up a little straighter and gestured for her to come sit next to him, which was probably more comfortable than sitting on the floor. He had no idea how much time had passed since he had sent Numike away. He had spent that time sleeping, mostly, or reflecting. He did still feel where she had slapped him, though the discomfort was almost gone.
"There is no need for you to leave," he told her, though he wouldn't meet her eyes. "The circumstances to your arrest are different than mine because, technically no-one arrested me. I chose this path, because I have killed. Even during possession, I could have done more to stop her, but I did not. I killed that engineer, however you look at it. It was my invasion in his mind, that caused his death. It was at my hands, that two other engineers were injured. It was I, who hurt my father."
He paused. "No, I belong here in this cell Tiana. There is no excuse for my actions, even though everyone is trying to find excuses."

Savin sat up a little straighter and gestured for her to come sit next to him. Tiana did so. She wanted to offer every milligram of support that she could.
"There is no need for you to leave," he told her, Tiana noted that he hadn't looked up properly since her arrival. She guessed what had happened had affected him but that was hardly a surprise.
It was I, who hurt my father." She swallowed hearing that 'confession' from the doctor, it wasn't right that he was taking all the responsibility for those actions. 'There but for the universe's grace, or rather the honour of Cet's former hosts, go I' wandered through Tiana's head. Trill law had a lot about actions occurring when you literally were no in your own mind and Tiana had read much of it in the last year
His account wasn't quite how Tiana remembered her arrest back on the Victory but then things were a little fuzzy from around then...
"No, I belong here in this cell Tiana. There is no excuse for my actions, even though everyone is trying to find excuses."
Yes, he had definitely been affected, and given his earlier word she would have been more surprised if he hadn't, and while she probably could argue with him it wouldn't help right now even if she thought she would win the argument. Of course she didn't think he was right to take sole responsibility for his actions, it was more that she knew her logic wasn't good enough to win a debate with a Vulcan particularly not about this. It cut a bit too close to home. Still, she had come here to be supportive and that was what she was going to do.
Tiana gave a slight shrug. "In that case I will not make anything that might be an excuse. I am still quite willing to stay and talk" She dropped her voice, she knew she would have to be honest. "I know that there was something else in your head. As a science officer I am intrigued by what it was. As a joined Trill I know it's horrible to be trapped in your own mind and as someone who considers you a friend I want you to know you aren't alone."
Tiana gave a slight coughing laugh as she realised the unintentional irony in her words. "Except that you are on your own in your head, which is good..." Her words trailed off as she registered that she might not be making complete sense. She could have left her experiences out of this. She had spoken off them briefly to Elliane but no one else; being here for a friend was more important than her issues, besides which it might help her too.

This time, Savin did look up. "What do you mean, you are on your own in your own head? Are you not on your own? Are you not your own personality, despite being joined?"
The young Vulcan knew next to nothing about Trill, they were a mystery to him even though he presumed to know Tiana well enough to consider her a friend. By his own private admission - and if asked - he would say that he cared for her. "I know what it is like to share someone's mind," he finally added, still looking straight at her, "I am a melder. I know how to enter someone else's mind and learn their thoughts."
Despite having been in this time for a fair while now, it was still difficult for him to admit that yes he could perform mind melds, even if in this era the taboo on it was long since past. He was too used to not talk about it, to keep it a secret even though he was not ashamed of his skill. Furthermore, he knew his skill even surpassed his father's. Possibly, because he was deaf and therefore relied on his telepathy more than his parents did.
"I am grateful for your support, but I am not sure what you can do for me. As I said, I deserve to be here, and I await judgement from the captain." Disappointment crossed his features. "He has not come once to see me. I have not seen William either."

Gheskori had not given much thought to the plight of his cousin Palarxi. The man was caught between the care of his sister-in-law and his geothermal energy-harnessing duties, and while Ghes's situation was of similarly divisive nature, he couldn't help but feel guilty - when the thought came to him -that his plight was somewhat trivial, and was the somewhat happy choice of some overfed dictator at a loss as to the colour of grape he coveted from the platter.
His wife did indeed need him. But so - his gregarious eyes informed him - did the Betazoid girl, Beia.
He supposed it was some sort of irony that he never saw that young telepath again. He'd effectively cast her off by returning to his ship. He tore his mind apart with the impossibility of the choices before him, finding much to like in one idea before rapidly forgetting it, switching to another choice, repeating the same process, and so on and so forth until...
He realised he hadn't made any progress. Nothing seemed of any worth. Honestly, what was the point? Gheskori kept trying to find some sign of life within himself, beneath the dizzy freneticism that layered itself, a facade, over the top of his consciousness. There was nothing... Just grey, nothingness. Or was it death? Penetrating like the scratching pain of an old-fashioned needle: the fading, pallid face of a noble Denobulan woman struck down by a rare disease unique to her species.
Gheskori entered the bridge of the Enzio, his mind under this domination. It would be easy to think that a member of his race was paying for its overly social nature... easy for the ignorant and weak-minded anyway. But it was the Denobulans' nature; nothing would change that, at least not in the immediate future. And besides, if he were to consider his wife's condition moribund, then he could play the pragmatist and consider the fact that he was yet to marry for the third time... Haha, didn't someone lie in wait?
It gave Ghes a gleam in his eye, a slight curling of the lip that was drenched in subtle dancing, pirouetting playfulness, and something sickly.
"Captain. Sickbay calls you... It's about the vulcan, Savin."
Ghes turned to look at the junior officer, raising an eyebrow. "Put Dr. Saryn through to the bridge would you?"
"Negative, sir. It was a recorded message, ten minutes ago. Apparently Savin would like to see you. He's in the brig."
"Acknowledged," Ghes said, surprise etched in his voice and both eyebrows raised. He strode from the deck.
The brig seemed darker than usual. Greyness permeated the place like sorrowful fog. Ghes nodded to the brig officer and stepped tentatively into the room, rounding the corner to peer into the nearest cell. Savin sat on the centre of the bench, expression neutral, although Ghes thought his shoulders drooped slightly. To his surprise, Tiana Galwyn Cet was also present, standing off to the side with her arms crossed, looking rather nonplussed.
The Enzio CO's eyes panned the room, starting on Tiana and coming to rest on Savin. He stared at the junior medic, non projecting the confidence that one might expect of a Starfleet Captain. "Savin, you alright?"
There was no answer at first. Gheskori licked his lips and came to stand before the cell, just centimetres from the invisible forcefield. He placed his hands on his hips. "Come on, let's stop all this nonsense and get you out of this cell. You don't belong in here.
"I imagine your father's concerned," he added. A slight sigh escaped his lips, "I've spoken to my superiors on base. As far as they're concerned, you're not liable to any charges that might be brought against you. You've been acquitted, Savin. Why keep this up?" Ghes had grown forceful, intent on ending this quickly.

Savin listened as Gheskori spoke. Well...more like watched as the Denobulan spoke because he couldn't hear a word the man said. For the last minutes he'd been speaking with Tiana and it had made him feel a little better, if not a little more like himself.
But the guilt just wouldn't go away. Not even Gheskori's words could change that. Why did he keep this up indeed. "Because I feel guilty," he finally answered, after an intolerable long silence. He had carefully debated his words but there was nothing else he could say.
The Vulcan pulled up his legs and hugged them with his arms, staring past his knees at the captain. "Perhaps they did exonerate me, but they do not know what happened. They were not there, I was. Even Commander Walters can testify that I did kill that engineer." He looked away for a moment. "It just does not feel right captain, I should be here, I should attone for my crime."

Commander Walters stood at the airlock, tapping his foot nervously as he waited. The area was pretty quiet thanks to everyone off doing repairs of some sort so Will was pretty much alone with his thoughts, at least as much as he could be with Hriss standing next to him looking over a PADD. “I still don’t know why you wanted me here Commander.” the Caitian growled. “There’s a ton of work to do, and the new transfers were having trouble.”
Will shrugged. “I know, but I thought it best that Lt. Fic’jara meet both of us at the same time. That way he won’t have to worry about getting to know the other department leaders before jumping right in.” Hriss had a weird look in response but dropped the matter for the time being, delving back into the PADD, entering a few new commands while muttering something under his breath (something about stem bolts and plasma ducts).
The airlock opened finally and at first glance Will didn’t see anything. An “ahem” drew his gaze down right as he started mentally kicking himself. “Down here human.” Lt. Ihlin Fic’jara said, balling up two of his four fists in frustration. “I swear, you all think that a race of my stature can’t exist in Starfleet.”
Hriss started laughing and Walters hoped he wasn’t blushing. “Sorry, force of habit. I’ve never met a S’ti’ach before.” He extended his hand. “Commander William Walters, Chief Engineer.” He motioned towards Hriss, “This is Lt. Hriss, one of my assistants.”
Ihlin smiled and shook both of their hands at the same time while still holding his bags in his other two hands. “Pleasure, Lt. Fic’jara, but I guess you already know that. So what’s the plan from here?”
Will chuckled as he released the handshake. “Quarters, then Hriss will show you around Engineering.” He gestured to the bags. “Want me to take one?”
Ihlin shook his round head, his floppy ears swaying with the motion. “They’re not heavy at all Commander, I’ve got it. So why is Hriss giving me the tour and not you? Isn’t that normally the Chief’s job?”
The human officer nodded gravely as they began walking. “Normally yes, but I’ve got a situation in the brig that I need to take care of. One part of the aftermath of our last mission is being difficult and the repairs has made it hard for me to put in some input.”
“What happened?”
Will shook his head. “Long story, related to the sorry state the hull is in. Are you ready to sink your teeth into a repair job of this magnitude?”
Ihlin grinned, showing off a full row of sharp teeth that ran from ear to ear. “Always am. Can’t let all that structural engineering training go to waste.”
The trio reached the turbolift and after entering they started for the officer quarters. “Good. Between the three of us we’ve got propulsion, power systems, and structural engineering covered so we should be a pretty effective trifecta. You’ll be officially listed as Assistant Chief Engineer along with Lt. Hriss. We won’t split up and cover individual shifts, instead we’ll each take charge of the engineers and technicians that go with our respective areas.”
The announcement caught Hriss by surprise. “You’re promoting me to Assistant?”
“Yup. You handled the crisis quite well and didn’t hesitate when things went south. That and you’re the most experienced power systems engineer on the ship. You’re more than capable of handling the job. So it’s settled.”
The turbolift stopped at the requested deck and the three engineers stepped out, chatting about random things while heading to the new officer’s quarters.

This time, Savin did look up. "What do you mean, you are on your own in your own head? Are you not on your own? Are you not your own personality, despite being joined?"
Tiana managed a half smile. These were awkward memories but she had brought up the situation so she could back out of talking about it now. She made an effort not to mumble or cover her mouth and try to hide that way. "That is how joining is supposed to work. Most of the time I have access to the memories of the people who hosted Cet before me and my personality has changed a little, settled might be a better word, but I am still me, still Tiana. However, when I was first joined, the memories and personalities overwhelmed me. Tiana was swept away and a whirl of memories took over. It wasn't any one specific personality, they were nearly as traumatised as I was ... " It had taken her a while to come to terms with that "Instead it was an amalgam that wanted to carry out my 'duty'. They weren't malicious or malevolent but they/it took over completely. I could look out of my eyes and see what was happening but even that was difficult. I was scared, I had heard of things like that happening but... I didn't know if I could get back, I know I hurt people, did things I wouldn't normally do. I wanted to fight but there was nothing to fight; it was me, the new me. It/they are still there but, although I share memories with the others Tiana is in control." She bit her lip well aware that she was coming close to voicing her fears about joining. Elliane was the only one she had mentioned those to and then only in the vaguest terms.
"I know what it is like to share someone's mind," he finally added, still looking straight at her, "I am a melder. I know how to enter someone else's mind and learn their thoughts."
Tiana nodded slowly she could tell that this was a difficult admission for Savin, when he came from it was not something one talked about.
"I am grateful for your support, but I am not sure what you can do for me." Tiana shrugged somewhat exaggeratedly, grateful to be on somewhat easier ground. "I'm not sure either, but I can and will visit you and spend time with you and not stop being your friend. Maybe you could teach me the form of sign you use...."
"I deserve to be here, and I await judgement from the captain." Disappointment crossed his features. "He has not come once to see me. I have not seen William either."
"That I can do something about." Tiana offered. She did not want Savin dwelling on his guilt alone. She was also a bit disappointed that Gheskori hadn't been by.
Their conversation continued but then notification came that the Captain was on his way to see Savin. Tiana got up from the floor and stood to one side giving the Captain space. She folded her arms and composed her expression into something close to a frown
"Savin, you alright?" Gheskori didn't quite sound his normal self. Savin did not reply. Probably because he could not see Ghekori's lips from the Captain's current position.
"Come on, let's stop all this nonsense and get you out of this cell. You don't belong in here." That was a sentiment that Tiana agreed with. She stayed silent waiting to see where the Captain took this conversation and whether his words would have any more affect on the Vulcan than hers had.
"I imagine your father's concerned," he added. A slight sigh escaped his lips, "I've spoken to my superiors on base. As far as they're concerned, you're not liable to any charges that might be brought against you. You've been acquitted, Savin. Why keep this up?" Tiana was somehow not at all surprised that the Federation code included several sections concerning the unwilling possession of the defendant by another entity.
It definitely wasn't her place to speak so Tiana stayed silent.
"Because I feel guilty," Savin finally answered. He did not look happy or well, neither of which was particularly surprising. "Perhaps they did exonerate me, but they do not know what happened. They were not there, I was. Even Commander Walters can testify that I did kill that engineer."
"It just does not feel right captain, I should be here, I should atone for my crime."
Tiana swallowed and then moved back to where Savin could see her properly. She had had a thought but wasn't sure if it would make it out her mouth making as much sense as it did in her head but she had to try. "Surely atonement would involve more than you sitting here? I would think saving lives would be more valuable."

"It is..." Savin was forced to agree, however reluctantly. She did have a point, saving lives was far more valuable. But how could he show himself in sickbay now, so shortly after having done this? How could his patients trust him, when it was clear he was capable of doing quite the opposite of saving a life? It felt wrong.
He looked up at her, then glanced between Gheskori and Tiana. "What should I do?" he asked unhappily. "How would I get people to trust me? They would be reluctant on allowing me to treat them. I am not well, captain. I do not feel well at all. And I cannot deal with this feeling of guilt, I do not know how."

Tiana simply did not know what to say. Guilt could be the most crippling of emotions.
She tried to respond to the first half of Savin's statement instead. "I think you'll find that people will be remarkably understanding. Weird things happen on Starfleet ships and we always have to move on."

Gheskori wasn't sure how to answer the young vulcan's questions, or rather his pleas. Ghes was no counselor, despite what some people said. Savin's words resonated with him in a different way however: his own overwhelming guilt at not being able to be by the side of his dying wife. It was enough for him to grasp Savin's remorse, at least in a small way.
If the Denobulan kept his own guilt bottled up inside any longer it would explode out of him in a torrent, but the moment didn't seem right to be empathising with Savin's position. He was a Captain; he was meant to lead.
"You'll just have to deal with it in your own way," he said rather unhelpfully. "You're a vulcan. Coping with emotions is what you're meant to be good at."
Tiana looked askance at the Captain, wondering what'd brought on this vein of toughness.
This time Ghes was making sure Savin could see his mouth forming the words, but some might still have been missed. "You ask us what you should do? We need you in sickbay, Savin. More I would say your father needs you. I could make it an order but I feel that would be somewhat unnecessary."
The young vulcan would cope, Ghes was sure of that. Something else occurred to him as he departed the brig, and he turned to address the young vulcan again, "Trust is built by familiarity. If you're not present to treat your father's patients how will that trust be regained?"
<Tag Savin, Tiana>
An uncommon frown creased the Denobulan's features as he made his way from the brig. His mind was locked in confusion about what'd just happened; he had no idea just how unhelpful he might've been.
* * * * *
"Yes, sir," the ensign chirped, her hands gliding over the console raising a whole chorus of beeps and squeaks that seemed to respond to her voice. He waited patiently while she authorised his entry into the Admiral's personal suite.
"Sorry to hear of your wife," the Admiral said, then pursed his lips, wondering if he had spoken out of turn.
Ghes nodded minutely, "Thank you, sir. Yes, I'm afraid her condition is terminal. She's had a long life though; perhaps it's her time."
There was no time to visit Denobula. He'd considered it carefully but the Enzio was about to be given a new mission, rendering any trip home impossible. He'd sent his apologies; his brother, also in Starfleet, was going and would tell his wife in person why her last husband would not be coming.
"Yes," the Admiral said, watching Ghes carefully. The flag officer went into the adjoining room, coming back with two PADDs and a broad grin. Gheskori's lungs emptied; an exhalation born of relief. The Admiral started. "What?"
Ghes laughed lightly. "I was sure you were coming back with two glasses of... whiskey, brandy, or some intoxicating liquid like that. Maybe even something from Denobula. Thought you were fulfilling a conformist role of empathy, sentimentality. It gets boring after a while."
"I'm glad I'm not common," the Admiral said, handing him the PADDs. "The Enzio departs the day after tomorrow. That should leave enough time for the mission advisor to reach Sol. Oh, and for the engineering team to finish repairing the hull. I haven't seen many ships come through here looking more... battered, than yours, Commander."
Ghes frowned at the rank, but didn't bother to correct the man. "Jupiter took its toll on us," he agreed. He scanned through the PADDs, looking for the mission advisor the Admiral spoke about. Oh... interesting. El'Aurian. One of the few that still existed in the current timeframe.
"In the mean time, why don't you take some more leisure? Enjoy Earth, Gheskori, while you're here."
"Not my kind of place, sir. If I may, however, I would like to discuss this mission in further detail."
"That would be my pleasure, Captain, but at the moment I cannot do so, I have a meeting with Admiral Starkey. Come back this evening."
Ghes bowed slightly, "In that case, sir, I wish you a pleasant day. And I must thank you for not offering me a drink."
The Admiral nodded, grinning, "The pleasure is mine, once again, Captain Gheskori."

Commander Walters hustled down the corridor towards the brig, apologies already forming in his head. With everything happening in Engineering he had had no chance to visit Savin in the brig. Thankfully Hriss was more than willing (incessant even) to take the lead so that the human could go visit his friend. Pausing outside the door to straighten his uniform jacket, Will stepped in and was surprised to see the forcefield down.
“Hey Savin! Looks like they’re letting you out. I knew they would.” he said in greeting, a smile already on his face. Seeing the Vulcan not in confinement was a great weight off of his mind.
“What do you say we go have some fun on the holodeck after this shift? I’ll let you pick the program if you’d like, I’m up to anything.”

Savin pondered the captain's words as he watched him leave, then watched Tiana leave as well. For a long moment, he sat on the cot, wondering about what was said to him, and his conflicting feelings.
Just as he was getting up, he saw William come in and he sat back down. "Yes, they let me out," he answered flatly. There was no emotion in his voice as he spoke, his eyes devoid of their usual sparkle. "Against my wishes."
The young Vulcan sighed as the Human babbled on; he was in no mood for social activities, but he had to show himself among the crew, and in sickbay again at some point. He realised Gheskori was right, the crew would not trust him until he was seen doing what he was supposed to be doing: helping his father in sickbay.
Again he sighed. "Very well, I will join you on the holodeck. What did you have in mind?"

Tiana waited until the Captain had left before she took her leave as well It was obvious that Savin needed some time to process what he had been told. She didn't want to push the issue too much. It would obviously take a while for him to come to terms with things.
Tiana needed to rest, it had been a very long and draining day. She returned to her quarters, dumped her uniform and stepped into the sonic shower turning it up. If Savin was still in the brig when she got up tomorrow she would be visiting him again, if he allowed it.
Other than that she intended to look after herself, her team and enjoy her leave. She had a workout room booked for a few hours in the afternoon which would be a good way to wind down from everything.
Tiana left the shower and quickly got ready for bed, sleep would be very good especially no one interrupted it.

"Captain Gheskori, this is Admiral Burke's office. Your orders have been transmitted to your personal console. Your vessel has been scheduled to leave at 0600 hours tomorrow. Good day, sir."
The promenade was reasonably quiet, the place seeming darker than usual. One solitary figure strode through the greyness, grateful for the peace it offered. Eyes watched from the upper level, their body concealed from the Starfleet officer's sight. The place seemed almost deserted, trading stalls unoccupied, cafes and such establishments shut.
Gheskori splashed water on his face and regarded himself in the mirror. Still no news from the homeworld. They would remember to tell him, wouldn't they? He slapped himself lightly. Of course they would. Why did he keep asking himself these ridiculous questions? Nowhere to turn, all he could do was tear his own convictions apart.
I could always put in a call, he thought. There was no hurt in that. Hungry and tired, he accessed his personal console and requested a channel to be opened to Denobula. Before he could confirm the request, his inbox caught the eye, specifically the message that was titled 'ORDERS'. The Enzio's next assignment. What does Burke have in store? he thought, scanning the message. All he knew was a vague outline from a PADD hastily handed him to amidst his poorly concealed grief.
Liral, El-Aurian female and unaligned diplomat, was to act as mission advisor. She had ample experience - hardly unusual, Ghes mused - with 'out' cultures, in the study of them and the diplomatic relations she'd entered into with them. What did the document define as an 'out' culture? One whose mode of function is far removed from the norms of Federation civilisation, sociologically or otherwise, and/or, Ghes read, one where time and space have fluctuating properties, and thus may influence the surrounding culture in other ways that can be difficult to predict.
He sat hunched at the screen, deep in thought, barely noticing the door chime. On the second ring, he shifted the seat back, stifled a sigh and opened the door. His jaw dropped. A female about his age stood there, almost entirely naked.
"Uhh," he cleared his throat, "Can I help you.. possibly?"
She smiled graciously, "Yes, I am Liral. You're Captain Gheskori of the Enzio, aren't you. A pleasure to meet you, sir."
Ghes recovered, smiling back, "Yes, I was wondering when I would make your acquaintance. I gather you're hear to discuss - ... The Admiral wasn't very specific about the mission details. Literally I have just found out. Won't you come in?"
Liral accepted and entered his assigned Spacedock quarters. Ghes swallowed, trying not to track her sinuous movements too carefully. He fiddled with a PADD on a side-table, taking the moment to compose himself and then made the El-Aurian a drink from the replicator. They discussed the mission to come, Ghes learning on the go. "We'll need a few upgrades to your engines, apparently. I ran into a fellow from Engineering Corps this morning," Liral said, perched on the low couch, "He gave me this."
Ghes took the PADD and nodded at its contents. "If you'll excuse me," he walked towards the wall, thumbing the companel and getting patched through to the Enzio. "Engineering? Yes, this is Gheskori. Where's Walters?" Words were mumbled back, something about a hologram? "I see... Well, could you let him know that there's a possibility we'll require a quantum slipstream drive for part of this mission - Wh- What?" Ghes strained to hear over the bad channel. "Yes, only a temporary arrangement. If he could contact me so we might discuss it further. Alright, thank you, Lieutenant. Ghes out."
"Sorry about that," he said to the woman on the couch.
<Tag all - we're starting the new mission soon - sorry for the massive delay>
