The USS Victory-D sat motionless within the vast dock of Starbase 47. Her sleek lines were more reminiscent of an aquatic animal than a starship. Keeping to the standard pattern determined by warp geometries and advanced starship designs a pair of nacelles emerged from short pylons that exited a stream line primary hull that blended seamlessly into a dagger like saucer section. Hazard lights blinked intermittently along the hull demarking the safer routes for the work bees that still applied the last touches of paint and removed the hard line umbilicals. With a mechanical jerkiness the docking arm was already retracting and a faint glow could be seen to be building within the RCS thruster assembly. Elsewhere within the docking area tractor beams locked onto to passing craft and held them safely away from starships exit path. A pair of doors in the starbases outer hull began to slide open and the physical clamps holding the Victory in place fell away. Now free from all attachments the glow in the thrusters intensified. Puffs of atmospheric thrusters pushed the ship away from the docking stand before a pair of repulsors and paired tractors began to guide the ship towards the exit. Edging out at barely 60 km an hour the Victory emerged from Starbase 47 like insect from an egg. Heading towards deeper space the ships lights came on as one. Warning lights flashed, room lights became obvious and the name plates became emblazoned in light. Alone Section Admiral Drew stood at a viewport watching the ships departure. He checked the chronometer and then returned to his duties, his face a mask. Aboard Magellan sat in the Command Seat with Captain Andier to his left and Commander Hope to his right. Nervously Sien Zoilip fingered the controls that deftly twisted the new ship away from the starbase and into a departure line. “We are ready” she noted as she received flight control clearance “Understood. I don’t want to use the Slipstream drive just yet. Engage warp engines Warp 6. Heading Starbase Assailant. We’ll swing by the old girl before we enter the nebula.” “Aye Aye Sir” Magellan nodded and turned to Andier, “Captain. Please assemble the senior staff at your earliest convenience I think it’s time I briefed the crew. If anyone needs me I’ll be in my office. The bridge is yours Mr Hope.” TAG ALL

Ethan didn't know about anyone else on board the USS Victory, but as she took her first few steps into space, Ethan was awash with anticipation, hope, and a desire to learn. Having never been part of a maiden voyage, Ethan knew the importance of these few steps. No matter what lay ahead of this crew, at this very moment the Victory and her crew were complete. Ethan's experience in space told him that this particular feeling would never be possible again. With all of these emotions and thoughts in his head, Ethan still had a job to do. It was his responsibility to make sure that the Victory was run effectively and efficiently. Admiral Lin's order to have the best possible people at their stations was a difficult one; almost all of them came highly recommended from their Academy professors. With his operations team now set and the engineering department almost ready, Ethan felt that he was finally making good progress on the Admiral's first order.
Sitting quietly near his console, Ethan listened to the initial orders that came from Admiral Lin. When the admiral mentioned Starbase Assailant, Ethan couldn't help but smile. He understood the attachment one could have towards a starship or starbase. It had been the admiral's home for years and he would want to introduce the new girl to the old one.
"....The bridge is your Mr. Hope."
If he had been younger and less experienced, Ethan would have been giddy with excitement. The center chair was something to be respected and in Ethan's opinion feared. The person in the center chair had the lives of everyone on board on their shoulders at all times, that responsibility was daunting. As Ethan took the center seat, he began to run his scans and diagnostic test.
As the captain made his way to his office, Ethan knew he would be making a few recommendations during their briefing. The average career span of the crew excluding the captain, the officers he brought with, first officer, and Ethan himself, was 26 months. The crew was extremely green and preparatory drills would be a must on their maiden voyage.
=^=Hope to Hawthorne=^= Ethan said as he tapped his combadge. Ethan remembered Lin's recommendation and this was the best opportunity to start.
Once the Lieutenant replied Ethan began his order, =^=Lieutenant, I want a Level 4 diagnostic test to be run on the slipstream drive. I will also have a surprise for you and your staff=^=
(Hawthorne)
Engineering would be the first department to go through one of his drills, but it certainly wouldn't be the only one. The USS Victory would become known as the best run ship in the entire fleet and Ethan would have happily bet money if he had any.

The Vesta class ship was quite a beauty. The class was easily the largest Vic had ever personally seen before. Though the usual marine was comfortable being placed in any situation, Vic couldn't think of any place he would rather be than exploring the unknown. He always had a fascination with things he did not know. Once he had completed his initial officer training for the Marine Corps, Vic had taken the first opportunity to participate in starship tactical training. It was certainly a different situation than the usual outings he was used to as a marine, but it was right.
Arriving on a ship for the first time could only be done one way in Vic's mind: through her airlock! He, along with several other crewmen entered onboard the ship via the hatch and each went about their various ways. There were a few logistics officers pointing the right directions out to several of the officers and NCOs. Vic, with his six man unit, approached one of the logistics officers and got their individual room assignments. All being either junior officers or NCOs, all six got shared quarters, as was the standard. Vic, much to his surprise, got his own quarters. This was certainly not what he was accustomed to. They made their way down to junior crew quarters and dropped the NCOs off at their shared bunks. They were primarily split apart, which was alright since they all had the intention of integrating fully with the ship's crew. After dropping the last one off, Vic and the team's unofficial XO, 2nd Lieutenant Brandon Waters, continued on to junior officer quarters a couple of decks up. They entered the room in question, which was partially occupied by a half-Klingon male who appeared to be apart of the ship's security division.
Waters approached the male and extended his hand, "I'm Waters. Looks like we're bunking together." The marine smiled.
The Klingon's responded by grunting and baring his teeth, almost snarling. He left the room. Waters was stunned and he raised an eyebrow, turning to Vic, who was doing everything he could not to burst out with laughter. Once the door closed behind the Klingon, Vic let it out.
Waters was not amused. "You're an [word deleted]."
Vic, still laughing, said, "That's you're an [word deleted], SIR!"
Waters ignored him, going about putting his belongings away.
Vic took a final look around. "Well, I'm due on the bridge. Have fun!" he said, chuckling.
Vic quickly visited his quarters to deposit his belongings. Taking only a moment to look around, the first thing he noticed was how spacious they were. Though still economical, it was much larger than Vic was accustomed to. "Nice," he said smiling. Already in uniform, Vic made his way to the bridge for the initial send off.
As the ship set out on her start, Vic had taken his bridge station. He and his small unit had arrived only an hour before the Victory was scheduled to leave so Vic was still getting accustomed to everything. So far, however, things were going well.
The Admiral called out the initial orders. It was truly a surreal experience. It was like taking your first steps. Certainly a great feeling.

Ever since she had stepped foot off of the Grayson, Hawthorne had been given little hints by those connections she had made networking around the Starbase 47 corridors about what her next assignment might be. After the Grayson's mission came to an end, all signs pointed to the soon-to-launch Vesta class starship moored within the cavernous starbse. When she had learned that the vessel was christened as the USS Victory-D, Jolene couldn't help but smile.
The days recent had been spent building a team. For the first time, Jo would be a ship's chief engineer from day one, allowing her to assemble a team that would work well with her leadership style. Even as she looked over the manifest for the twentieth time, she was pleased at the complement of skills they would have as a collective group. On paper, everything seemed to be a perfect match.
Anytime Hawthorne was reassigned to a new type of vessel, her first order of business was always getting used to a new engine room. Depending on the amount of research done beforehand, she was either always pleasantly surprised or completely underwhelmed. Jo, of course, had done her research into the ship's systems and capabilities, but now, as she watched the power levels rise throughout the ship, the same giddy excitement that she always felt about her job resurfaced.
"Warp six? That's it?" Hawthorne wondered aloud. The engine note barely increased in pitch - the Victory had little to no problems with speed.
=^=Hope to Hawthorne=^= Ethan said as he tapped his combadge. Ethan remembered Lin's recommendation and this was the best opportunity to start.
=^=Hawthorne here, engine room at your disposal.=^=
Once the Lieutenant replied Ethan began his order, =^=Lieutenant, I want a Level 4 diagnostic test to be run on the slipstream drive. I will also have a surprise for you and your staff=^=
=^=Level four diagnostic on the slipstream drive, understood. And Commander, surprises are our specialty down here sir.=^=
(Hope)
Most of the engineering staff was already gathered around the pool table. Jo greeted those that she had met before and introduced herself to those she hadn't.
"Alright folks, well done on the initial launch. We haven't created any wormholes or torn the fabric of space and time, so I'd call that a success. I need a level four diagnostic done on the slipstream drive. I get the feeling the folks upstairs are wanting our new ship to stretch her legs a little bit. Well, we're going to be ready."

Rather than use the Victory’s spacious ready room at the rear of the main bridge Magellan had opted for an office on the deck below. As a flag officer day to day running of the ship would fall to his XO Captain Andier and he thought she would have greater use of it than he. The office was smaller than he was used to on the Starbase but then a base had abundant space. Starships had to maximise their usage but Magellan was used to that. The Victory –B had been an Incursion class vessel which was pretty much a modified Defiant class ship and so was much much smaller than the current Vesta class vessel. He sank into his chair and checked his messages, most were routine but one was from Laurana on Assailant saying that she was ready to come aboard the minute they arrived, the last of the crew would join her and the Victory would be ready to get out there.
The Victory’s new conference room housed a curved table with ten seats and a full holographic display. On the wall were models of the previous incarnations of the Victory including that most ancient of craft, Nelson’s flagship from Trafalgar. This historic fact had provided Magellan the basis of naming the two runabouts Nelson and Trafalgar and some of the shuttlecraft, Hardy, Villeneuve and Santa Anna. With Sien Zoilip acting as his aide Magellan was alerted when all the senior staff had assembled in the room and so was able to appear at the last minute. “Thank you for coming ladies and gentleman” he said taking a seat at the head of the table. Sien took station behind his right shoulder. He looked at the mix of humans, Andorians, Trill and Caitains assembled before him. “I m not going to beat about the bush. As you may have guessed by the marine presence and that this ship is commanded by a full Fleet Admiral that this mission is not of the usual type.” He paused thinking how to broach the subject, opting for a direct one, “Our current priority is locating a subspace terminal to the underspace network first discovered by the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant. We suspect one exists in the Betreka Nebula. We know this because two years ago a Vaadwaur vessel and a Turei one appeared in Starbase Assailant space. We made some initial scans for it to no avail. Both races also disappeared from view, we assumed they returned to the Delta Quadrant. You are the best...well the best we could assemble in the time required. Science, operations and Engineering need to collaborate in finding a way to detect the corridor entrance. Dixon I want you to liaise with Captain Andier to run combat drills and boarding actions. Lastly Dr Lassiter, I need you to take an inventory of the DNA of the crew and conduct DNA checks of everyone every week. Thank you all. If you have any questions I’ll be in my office.”

A benefit that Drew often enjoyed of high rank was being left on his own. Crowds had gathered in front of all the major viewports of Starbase 47, but no one had felt it appropriate to stand with him as he too watched the launch of Starfleet’s newest ship, one which bore a name that was legendary. Even more remarkable was that man sitting in the centre chair was even more of a legend.
As the starship came to life and the lights on the hull proudly shone on the name USS VICTORY, Drew tried not to feel guilty. He had told Magellan as much as he could about the mission, but there were some things that were better left unsaid until it was absolutely necessary. Magellan, Drew knew, would understand that and would have done the same in his position. All the same, it was difficult to think that he was sending one of his oldest friends into a deadly and unknown situation.
He had been a concerned at some of Magellan’s choices for the crew, an Ensign CMO who until recently had been a highly decorated Commander, a Marine First Officer and Ethan Hope. Well, the less said about him the better… Still, Drew trusted Magellan’s judgement and if anyone could make this mission work it was him.
As Victory slowly moved out from Starbase 47, Drew checked on the time and noted with a sigh that he was already late for his next meeting. Wishing his friend a silent farewell, Drew walked away and carried on with his duties.

The briefing was easily arranged, especially with the help of Aidan, who diligantly passed along any information. Kesha trusted him completely, and since he was known for his honesty, she also never doubted him if he objected to something, for whatever reason.
During the briefing, he stood within her line of sight, as was usual. He was inconspicuous and he deftly moved out of the way if someone entered, left or simply walked around. It was almost, as if he simply wasn't there, unnoticed, silent yet very important to one of the people present. Kesha wondered just how many of this new collection of officers was familiar with sign language. She presumed, at least the new Marine Detachment commander would be familiar with some signs and signals.
She signaled to Aidan to detain Dixon after the briefing for a moment, and make an appointment with him on her behalf for a meeting. Kesha herself hurried after Lin; yes she had questions. "Admiral," she called after him, drawing his attention. "Why do we need DNA of all the crew on file?"

Vic had paid close attention to the briefing as it had to do with subspace corridors. The topic had great tactical promise in Vic's eyes and even though he would not be the one to create anything anywhere near it, he definitely saw the potential. Having first read up on them during his recreational study of the Voyager mission, he had found a certain ease in the situation. It was something about being stranded an unrealistic distance from home and having no hope of survival that appealed to him. Vic admired the Voyager crew for their perseverance. Now, it was time to see what the Alpha Quadrant could bring.
As the briefing concluded, Vic was approached by a crewman who requested to set up a meeting between Vic and the ship's XO, a meeting he of course accepted.
"Inform the Captain that I am at her leisure today. I'll just be exploring the ship's tactical and security stations." With that, he left to do just that.
His first stop was to meet with his seniormost officers and crewmen in the security headquarters. He entered the main receiving area, where the group had already gathered. The group consisted of two marines from his marine unit, including Lieutenant Waters, plus eleven of the Victory's tactical/security officers. All were standing at attention, though Vic noticed a smirk briefly come across Waters' face, before disappearing immediately.
"Gentlemen, as you are aware, we have gotten underway and our mission has been ordered by Command. With that said, I have called you here for another reason. Each of you are standing here because Starfleet has deemed you worthy of the rank you currently hold. However, you are now under my command." Vic paused for dramatic effect. "As of now, you will consider yourselves equals. During the next few weeks, we will be participating in a series of combat drills devised by myself. I want to know what you are all made of. I expect there to be competition. These will go along with the drills that have been ordered by Command."
Vic looked the men over. "Any questions?"
There was silence.
"Excellent. You will each find an aptitude exam in your security files here." He pointed to the table nearby. "You have two hours to complete and submit these. Get to it."
The men filtered around the table and picked up their padds. Let the games begin!
-------------------------
Having done his initial sweep of the ship's security stations, Vic made note of the time and proceeded to the XO's office for his scheduled meeting. It was his first time officially meeting the XO but he was confident things would get going well.

Rachel took one step into sickbay and paused. She pulled in a deep breath and filled her nostrils with the scents – that new ship smell. This would mark her first experience with that smell and she wanted to drink it in.
Surveying the area, she found all the expected amenities; fourteen beds with room for up to thirty, four labs, seven observation/isolation/critical care pods, three staff offices, and a consultation room.
“All these bulkheads can retract into the deck above, opening this space up to a maximum of 100 beds – but let’s hope we never have to use that feature.”
Rachel nodded at the man who spoke. He was tall with jet black hair, just greying temples, and a broad, warm smile. He extended his hand in greeting. “I’m Doctor Fisher, Ryan Fisher. I’m very glad to meet you.”
“Likewise.” Rachel noticed the rest of her staff assembling in a hodgepodge manner. She introduced herself to each one.
The other two doctors were Kelly Hutton and Lyrya Idrani.
Hutton was taller than Rachel, and appeared to be a hybrid of Klingon and human. She held a Lt. Cmdr. Rank. Her height and bearing were striking, the kind of woman that would turn heads when she entered a room. Lassiter couldn’t tell if it was arrogance or confidence that made her so.
Lt. JG Dr. Lyrya Idrani was a petite Andorian who brimmed with enthusiasm.
Lassiter chatted with them all for a bit until the expected call came for all senior staff to assemble. Before she left them, Rachel tasked them with ensuring supplies were well-stocked. She had a feeling that they may not see the inside of a starbase for a while.
Rachel studied the people around the conference table with keen curiosity. She tried to pinpoint similarities, discover strengths, and see what these people possessed that made Admiral Lin choose them. Knowing the crew would be a step further toward knowing her Captain.
Lassiter liked Lin’s brevity and his directness. The meeting was over quickly and, as she rose to leave, she heard the XO’s question necessitating the gathering of DNA samples. A great question, Lassiter thought, so she meandered over to them. She would like to know the answer to that too.
“Standard procedure calls for everyone’s DNA to already be on file,” Rachel offered, hoping she wasn’t overstepping her bounds. “I will, of course, make sure that everyone has been included. Since the crew was assembled quickly, there may be quite a few who are missing.” She searched both their faces. “I’m with Captain Andier, though… I would like to know why DNA will need to be rechecked every week. I mean, warping through space, it would be tough to sneak a clone or a doppelganger onboard. And I am not aware of the Vaadwaur or the Turei posing as imposters.”
Rachel had served long enough to know that if her CO didn’t want to fill in the blanks, he wouldn’t. But, it never hurt to ask.

Magellan paused as he walked down the corridor and turned to face the Marine Captain, "Captain Andier, as Security specialist surely you understand the need to maintain a watch on the crew and to have a database of genetic material to support medical needs and research aims?" Tag Andier As the andorian trill replied Dr Lassiter appeared, “Standard procedure calls for everyone’s DNA to already be on file,” Rachel offered, hoping she wasn’t overstepping her bounds. “I will, of course, make sure that everyone has been included. Since the crew was assembled quickly, there may be quite a few who are missing.”

Rachel had served long enough to know that if her CO didn’t want to fill in the blanks, he wouldn’t. But, it never hurt to ask. "Would it were that simple." Magellan sighed, "Ordinarily I would agree with you Ensign clones or doppelgangers are unlikely and the Vaaadwaur and Turei are not the threat I am concerned about. You may not be aware but a few months ago an invasion occured from the Mirror Universe. I have had too many dealings with our counterparts to discount them out of hand." Lassiter nodded along with the reply and then politely made an observation, "If the mirror universe is a threat then surely I should run quantum signature checks instead of DNA ones." Magellan fixed Lassiter with a stiff glare that turned in to a wry smile and curt nod of the head, "That will not be necessary, maintain your DNA scans as instructed, but you may ease their regularity whilst we are underway in deep space. Strengthen them after every contact and ship meeting, planetary orbit or encounter. You are one of the first lines of defence in this matter of that I am sure, Laurana can attest to that. Now if that's all doctor I guess you should return to your sickbay. Captain will you walk with me a little." Magellan nodded a farewell to the Doctor and proceeded down the corridor with Captain Andier. "What are your thoughts on the crew and the ship? Please be candid, this mission is going to thrust them into some difficult situations and those are only the ones I know of" TAG Andier

The Victory had been underway only a few hours before Harash-kyat was feeling the need to leave his wifes side.
"Have you arranged to have the quarters enlarged or not." Jalli-tol exclaimed shrilly "I don't want our calf starved of space."
"Kila won't be joining us for several weeks. Not until your parents are due to travel to Andor."
"That may be so, but in my experience it pays to be organised and this sized room is insufficient"
"I agree my dear" he ceded whilst fastening his jacket, "But I believe it prudent to wait until he is here before asking operations..."
"Bah..." she interrupted, grasping his lapels and straightening them before sweeping some non-existent dust from his shoulders, "That operations officer is Commander Hope and its his job to accommodate us properly"
"I know it is Commander Hope but..."
"But nothing. You must speak with the senior man if you want a job doing"
"Later" he asserted as he afixed his comm badge, "When I ve..."
"That's another thing you have been assigned to Science not engineering so i cannot see why you feel the need to visit that department. I thought we could spend this time with me familiarizing you with undoubtedly the different operating protocols. I do not want you making silly mistakes in front of Commander R'Siq."
"No dear. I ll be back soon. I would just like to see the slipstream drive. What will you do?"
Jalli-tol also reached for her jacket and briskly fastened, "Well as you aren't available I will just have to amuse myself. I thought I would begin by checking in with the CMO. I can guarantee she won't be well versed on Grazerite physiology. I think it best that she get the best information before I am incapacitated and I must rely on butchery for survival."
"Very good dear. I will see you for dinner. The main mess hall?"
"With the junior officers? I thought we may try to get a dinner with the Admiral. But for tonight I suppose that will do."
"I think so. Besides if like most humans this Hawthorne is anything to go by I may be sometime in engineering. Always so hasty i find" Harash-kyat said in despair,
"I agree, I hope this Dr Lassiter is more skilled than the so called doctor we had on our last posting"
With that the couple found themselves in the corridor. They stooped their heads to rub noses before leaving in separate directions. One to Sickbay and One to Engineering.

Kesha frowned. "I think you're a little confused admiral, I'm not a security specialist at all. I know my weapons yes, and know how to use them quite well, but security is not my area of expertise. I'm an MD sir, I went to medical school."
She saw Dixon approach from the corner of her eyes and gave him a nod of acknowledgement, she'd seen him and would be with him shortly. "Aidan, please accompany the lieutenant to my office and make him comfortable," she ordered her assistant/brother, "I have something else to discuss with the admiral.
The Andorian watched the Trill go, then observed the conversation between the commanding officer, and the chief medical officer. "That makes sense," she acknowledged, "the difference on DNA level will be subtle, but if we have someone's DNA on file, the difference will show up with a simple scan. Even so, it is known you have no double Admiral, unless your brother looks like he may be your exact twin?"
Before giving his answer, Lin already asked her another question as they walked on, apparently her question forgotten. "What are your thoughts on the crew and the ship? Please be candid, this mission is going to thrust them into some difficult situations and those are only the ones I know of"
"Some of the senior staff seem a little inexperienced sir, but I think they'll pan out just fine. Starfleet did send us the best in their field as promised, and that's what we need. I'm sure Doctor Lassiter will keep on top of things and I'll make sure crew will comply with the request for a DNA sample. You and I sir, we should give the correct example by reporting to sickbay first. Even if you don't have a double, your brother might just pose as you so it's better to be safe, than sorry. Me, I don't know if I have a double at all nor does Aidan know. And...I'd rather shield him from this if I could sir. I probably can't but still, he's family."
She paused as she considered his question again. "The type of mission will only prove the sturdiness of this crew sir, but I think they'll be fine in the long run. If anything, it'll create some bonding between the senior staff, and teach them that we have to trust one another in order to get things done. Now...if you'll excuse me sir, I have a meeting with Lieutenant Dixon."
[Lin]
She gave a brief salute then headed to her office. "Lieutenant Dixon, a pleasure to meet you," she started pleasantly, "I apologize to have kept you waiting but my meeting with the admiral was of such importance that it was necessary. What is the status of your department? Are the marines ready to act the moment they are called upon? If there is anything you require in terms of training or otherwise, please don't hesitate to request it."
She smiled. "I am a marine lieutenant, I know what marines need."

Insidious computer viruses were always a threat to Federation vessels. The fact that the USS Victory at that very moment was probably the most powerful active ship in the fleet made it a tempting target. Ethan preferred to make his drills as real life as possible, but Admiral Lin wanted to maintain the schedule, so Ethan would have to improvise. As he inputted his final instructions, he hoped that the engineering department would receive high marks on the drill.
"Computer begin program Trojan Hope Alpha Two the moment Lieutenant Hawthorne accesses the diagnostic report she is running, keep the program isolated to all engineering and operation work stations and personal," Ethan ordered," identify and create a report on all actions taken by both departments in their attempt to find and rectify the simulated problem."
The chirp of the computer told him that his order would be carried out and he could begin the delicate process of making sure everyone on board was happy with their quarters and neighbors. Past experience told him that having incompatible neighbors usually led to lower efficiency and potentially other problems. Ethan couldn’t help but chuckle in amusement as he saw fifteen messages for him requesting a change of quarters and shifts. The living request would be honored in accordance to protocol, but Ethan believed that no one gets out of working every shift.
The Victory would normally run on a three eight hour shift during normal everyday operations. When needed, the Victory could shift into four six hour shifts, and during times of emergency the ship would operate under two twelve hour shifts. No one but the CO, XO or Ethan himself would be permitted to change someone’s shift schedule and Ethan personally believed that everyone should work every shift at least once every two weeks. It would take a little bit of tinkering, but Ethan would make sure that it would be equitable for everyone on board.
With that in mind, Ethan went about his first shift. Two of the ship’s departments would get their first test, the crew was in the process of getting to know each other and their first mission was underway. Many things were taking place and from previous experience, he would soon wish to have a repeat of this shift.

Rachel walked briskly down the corridor and to the lift, tapping her comm. badge as walked.
“Dr. Fisher, we will begin sampling the DNA of all crew immediately. Set up a call list; start alphabetically and don’t let anyone, regardless of their rank, skip their appointment. I’m on my way to you now.”
“Aye, Doctor.”
“Since we’re not at full compliment, we should be able to get through everyone by first shift tomorrow, but that’s with everyone pulling doubles.”
The lift doors spilled her out on the proper deck. She continued talking as walked. “Though it’s not the premium way to get to know each other, we will certainly find out a lot about each other in a hurry over the next 16 hours.”
Rachel walked into sickbay. “And, Dr. Fisher…”
Ryan Fisher wheeled around to see the CMO standing there at the doorway.
“… Any crew member whose file indicates they arrived at Starbase 47 within the last six months is to be given a quantum signature scan… starting with me.”
Fisher raised both eyebrows, but didn’t protest. He gave a nod and set off to calibrate the scanner.
Although the Admiral had said quantum signature scans weren’t necessary, Lassiter wasn’t taking any risks. Until Lin spoke about the Mirror Universe incursion, she hadn’t known about it. She did, however, know what they were capable of doing.
Four hours in and sickbay was teeming with people. Doctors Idrani, Hutton, and Fisher were sailing through the list of names and had even caught a few crew who were delinquent on their immunizations. The nursing staff consisting of five nurses; Todd Ellington, Amy Montgomery, Epha Oniya, Charlotte Beck, Jazeer Hupta, were ticking through the list as well. Even the two orderlies, Aktuh and Megumi Kimura, were pitching in.
Eighteen hours in and the people were lining the halls waiting to get in. Rachel finished the patient she was scanning and noticed the crowd leaning up against the walls, folded arms across their chests and scowls on their faces. Most of them were waiting for Dr. Hutton, it appeared.
Rachel approached her. “Dr. Hutton. Your line seems to be moving the slowest. Is there something I can help you with here?”
“I’m working as fast as possible!” she spat, her hot-blooded Klingon nature showing. “Checking through their files as to their whereabouts six months ago is ridiculous and time-consuming.”
“We are following orders,” Rachel soothed. “Perhaps if you didn’t call for so many crew at once you could eliminate their waiting time?”
“Perhaps you could have explained to the Admiral how unnecessary this all is, Ensign.”
Rachel settled back on her heels, observing Hutton’s flashing eyes and intimidating stature. She had wondered who among her staff would be the least likely to accept her reduced rank. She should have bet on Kelly Hutton.
“Dr. Hutton,” Rachel met Hutton’s steely glare. “If you are too tired to continue in your duties, I’ll have Nurse Montgomery take over for you. In the meantime, I think it’s best if you call only 3 crewmembers at a time to report… or have one of the orderlies to do your scheduling.”
Hutton struggled to keep her Klingon temper. “That won’t be necessary,” she huffed, returning to her scan.
“Good,” Lassiter replied flatly. “Keep up the good work. It won’t be long until we’re finished.” She cupped a friendly hand on Hutton’s shoulder and felt her colleague tense under her touch. Rachel pretended not to notice.
As hour twenty neared, a very pregnant Grazerite female entered sickbay and demanded to see the Doctor in charge.
“I’m the Chief Medical Officer,” Rachel told her as she finished up a scan. “Is there a medical emergency or are you here for your DNA check?" she asked, noticing her advanced gestation.
“I am here to find out if you are skilled enough to deliver my calf when the time comes.”
“If this isn’t an emergency, then I’ll have to ask you to come back later, please. You should already be aware we’re conducting a ship-wide DNA check of all crew.”
“The welfare of my calf is paramount to an emergency. I will not be dismissed until I gain satisfaction that you are competent.” She snorted derisively for emphasis.
Rachel sighed wearily and picked up her PADD. “What is your name, please?”
“I am Commander Jalli-Tol and, if you cannot tell, am Grazerite. The physiology of my people is complex and very different from most humanoid…”
Rachel cut her off, “Have you experienced any nausea with this pregnancy?”
Jalli-Tol wrinkled her nose at Lassiter and scoffed, “You are already showing your lack of knowledge. Grazerite females rarely have nausea associated with pregnancy.”
“Recent studies have found that those females who do present with nausea are more likely to have complications during delivery,” Rachel intoned tiredly. “It has been discovered that among ruminants like Grazerites, the four stomachs, though considered vestigial organs, can secrete lysozymes which impede oxytocin levels which, in turn, can delay the onset of childbirth.”
The Grazerite Commander fell silent.
“So,” Lassiter continued, “May I assume your answer is no, then?”
Twenty-two hours in and Rachel's staff were dead on their feet. She dismissed the orderlies and three of the five nurses and asked Dr. Fisher to find replacements from among the crew who had medic training.
Lassiter’s list was finished so she scrolled through the master list to see who was left.
“Surely we’ve seen everyone,” Dr. Idrani said with a tired sigh, heaving herself into nearby a chair. “Who’s left?”
Rachel leaned on a biobed to relieve her aching feet. “No surprise – just most of the bridge crew.”

The Victory spent less than 8 hours at Starbase Assailant. She didn’t even form a hard seal dock just moved within transporter range. Admiral Magellan left the ship briefly to say goodbye to his staff before returning and heading to the bridge. In those few hours the final 52 crew came aboard as well as the last of the supplies and equipment. Part of the equipment included a multi-spectral sub-space scanner array. It was a prototype from the Daystrom Institute and was already being installed by Hawthornes engineering team. The senor pallet would increase the resolution of their sensors 10-fold and enable deep scans to be run on the sub-space make up of the nebula. “I am uploading a file” Magellan said crossing to a terminal at the back of the bridge, “It contains the telemetry from the Vaadwaur and Turei vessels we encounter 5 years ago. It may help our search.” “Mr Hope, have Captain Andier attend the bridge until then you have operational command. Ensign Zoilip kindly take us into the nebula” The young bolian having said goodbye to her father on Assailant powered up the thrusters and navigated a path towards the purple swirling mass of the Betreka Nebula. The nebula was a vast swathe of space swamped in interstellar gases. It was inherently unstable with tidal eddies in sub-space, plasma storms and rifts. A number of planets both rogue and habitable existed in its inky depths and it had been the site of a brief conflict between the Cardassians and Klingons some 100 years ago.

Commodore Gheskori watched the USS Victory slide through the void away from Starbase Assailant. It wasn't for the first time, only on this occasion there was a different letter appended to the ship's registry number. The Vic-C was no more - a permanently moored museum situated on the other side of Assailant's sizeable docking bay. It was time for the ship's grand legacy to be passed to a newer vessel. One not on the verge of breaking at the seams as the old Nebula workhorse had been, Ghes thought fondly. Unusual for him, and for Denobulans... They weren't the type to be nostalgic.
Breaking from his reverie, he headed for the turbolifts that would take him to the operational level of the starbase, and the offices of the senior personnel. An Admiral had requested his attendance; apparently he wanted Gheskori to be the one to take responsibility. What he was taking responsibility for was still a mystery, but he knew this particular Admiral had a fondness for the cryptic remark.
"But we're in peace-time," he blurted, after the Admiral had told him. The Admiral sat nonplussed behind her overly-ornate desk. She had five different models of starship arrayed to the side of it. Ghes realised then they were the five ships to carry the name of Victory.
"It doesn't matter. The Betreka Nebula is and always be a contentious zone. The presence of Klingon warships is always enough to raise alert status. Friendly or not, they have their tensions with the Tholians." She held a hand up, characteristically annoyed at being interrupted. "I want you to inform the Fleet Admiral of the situation, Commodore. No discussion."
Gheskori sighed and turned to use the terminal in the corner of the suite. He waited for the subspace uplink, which thankfully didn't take long as the Victory was still only about half a parsec away. "Admiral Lin, sir. This is Commodore Gheskori at Assailant. Admiral Taylor wishes to inform you that there's a Klingon patrol squadron roaming your area of the nebula. Obviously they're friendlies but they haven't made their intentions clear, so be on guard. And... Godspeed, Admiral."
With a wry smile Ghes turned back to Admiral Taylor, hands on hips. "Can I return to the Enzio now?"

Working tirelessly for the last hours, Kesha made sure all reports were in, and all stocks were taken. When finally the last of the senior staff had reported in, she made note of it in a log and signed it off for storage. Between that, she had spent maybe one hour in her quarters to get her gear stored away. She felt, she could hardly let Aidan do this for her.
For their benefit, and convenience Aidan was quartered with her and that was easy enough since, as first officer, she had very spacious quarters. Room enough for two, for sure. And neither of them had very many belongings to bring with them. "Kesha." Aidan tapped her on the shoulder to get her attention. "I'm going to sickbay for the DNA thing the admiral ordered. Will you be alright for a while?" He signed as he spoke, his expression fairly neutral.
"I'll be fine." Kesha smiled at him, knowing how the young man didn't really fancing remaining in a medical facility for any longer than was necessary. Her brother was still struggling with the recently resurfaced memories of having been briefly joined against his will. She'd guided him through several nightmares, for weeks on end, until finally her father had confessed to having arranged a memory block. At age fifteen, he had reasoned, the boy had been too young to cope with the memories of a very young symbiont. Not to mention the trauma of being joined, plucked from the street at random, knowing that two prior attempts to join the young symbiont had resulted in host death.
She watched him go, worry etched on her face. He was still recovering from it all, even though it was now five years ago that it'd happened. Kesha reasoned, that with proper counseling he would've made it through just fine, and that this was worse than having been allowed to remember from the start. "I'll be on the bridge," she called after the departing Trill.
Picking up her PADD, she tucked into the waistband of her uniform, straightened her jacket and went back to the bridge.
--
Aidan quietly walked into sickbay, silent and almost going unnoticed until he tapped a random nurse (or doctor, he really couldn't tell) on his arm. He knew that wouldn't have been necessary but he was so used to touching someone to get her attention, that it was just force of habit. "Excuse me ma'am? I'm here for my DNA profiling. I've spent the past six months mostly on Starbase 47 ma'am."

Sitting silently in the center chair, Ethan quietly contemplated everything that they would be doing on this trip. As he saw the specs for the sensor array, Ethan smiled at the anticipation. He would be the point man on the most technologically advanced sensor array on a Federation vessel. Allowing for his personal excitement to be on the forefront for only a few moments, Ethan turned his attention to the other information that they had picked up from the Daystrom Institute, all known information on the Vaadwaur and Turei vessels.
All cadets were asked to take Delta Quadrant Species and Technologies presented by Admiral Janeway and Captain Kim. It was one of his favorite classes, but admittingly he did not remember everything that he had learned so many years ago. The reports on Voyager's original contact with the Vaadwaur were especially fascinating to Ethan. Awaking from centuries of sleep, the expansive nature of the Vaadwaur had not diminished. If not for the Admiral and her crew, the Vaadwaur could have very well been a major player in the Delta Quadrant.
"Computer display all known information on the Vaadwaur, send all known information on the Turei to my personal computer in my quarters," Ethan said as left the vaulted center chair for his operations console. As he approached his console he couldn't help but admire the design of the Vaadwaur vessels. They were centuries old and they still packed a strong punch. It was easy to see how they were feared throughout the quadrant.
Ethan would become intimately involved with the information the Victory had just acquired. Only four hours into his research, he was pleased to see that Lieutenant Hawthorne and her team had finished installing the sensor array. The little test that Ethan had devised had not gone as well as they had hoped. He was sure that Hawthorne and her team were anxious to prove they could do better. ~They must do better or we can end up all dead~ Ethan mused as he acknowledged the report.
"Commander, have you ever seen the Betreka Nebula?" Ensign Zollip asked from the helm.
The question had taken Ethan aback for a few moments. He had seen the nebula in padds and observational reports hundreds of times, but he had never seen Betreka with his eyes before.
"No Ensign I have not," Ethan said with a smile. The view screen changed to show the Betreka Nebula in all her glory. While not overly different than any other nebula in her classification, Ethan believed it to be beautiful. The magic of nature, always made him realize how small people actually were. As he admired the view, Ethan noticed that the XO had made her way to the bridge.
"Major we have arrived at Betreka, we will be entering the nebula within minutes," Ethan reported," all system report nominal, and the engineering team has finished installing the sensor array ahead of schedule."

Magellan heard Ethans report that they were about to enter the nebula and so decided to leave his office and join the senior staff on the bridge. The Vesta class wasn’t the smallest ship in the fleet nor the biggest but she was designed to give the illusion of space and security. Two necessary factors in long distance research missions. The ship had nearly 700 crew with an extra emergency capacity for another 200 at least. His office was only three decks below the bridge and so it didn’t take long to reach the ships nerve centre. He even managed to beat the XO who was doubtless deeper in the ship.
Ethan rose from his chair surrendering the centre seat to the Admiral, “No its okay Hope, I ll just stand at the back and watch.” Ethan nodded and turned to the young Bolian woman at the helm, “Okay Sien take us into the nebula one half impulse” he ordered crisply and pulled up an arm monitor to watch the ships vital systems as the sleek vessel entered the swirling maelstrom.
“Oncemore unto the breach” Magellan muttered to himself as he paced along the rear access of the bridge. The few officers shuffled uncomfortably under his gaze. A Denobulan officer monitored the science board whilst a diminutive human female manned the link Engineering console. Sien sat at the front at the conn with another Trill, Ensign Garron Kaskar at the operations console, filling in for Ethan whilst he had command. At tactical Victor Dixon stood in quiet contemplation, his hands resting lightly on the thin but deadly console in front of him.
The ship shook slightly as they entered the nebula and the lights seemed to imperceptibly dim, “Compensate the SIF and Inertial Dampeners” Ethan ordered Garron, Garron blushed and did as he was ordered and the ride evened out. Happy that the entry had been smooth Ethan gave the order to enter warp and the search for the terminus began.
“Commander Hope, Can you see to the deployment of the sensor arrays?” Magellan asked “We have rough sub-space indicators and I think it shouldn’t take you too long to identify a series of possible.”

"Nebula penetration in five hundred meters," a voice called out over the engine room.
Nebulae were always an exciting time for any and all engineers simply due to the added variables of the complex and constantly fluctuating magnetic field variations associated with them. It had always been a running joke in the Academy that whenever someone's warp field theory homework solution was incorrect, the unlucky student would be saved from disgrace by blaming his or her error on a nearby nebula not originally stated in the problem's description.
Well, the problem was now very real for Jolene as she stood hawking over the rest of main engineering on the upper level. From her vantage point, she could give orders quickly whilst simultaneously keeping an eye on the general condition of the ship on the "pool table" behind her. Per standard operating procedure, power output dropped to approximately eighty percent of the engine's maximum output to allow the EPS grid more leniency when dealing with the massive fluctuations generated by the nebula.
"Take a look around, enjoy the view a bit everyone. Don't get so wrapped up in the job that you forget to enjoy it. Would you look at that?" Hawthorne pointed.
The Vesta's designers had been so kind as to include a massive display located on the sub-floor below the main engine room. With the press of a few buttons, the view outside could be projected onto it, breathing a bit of life into the previously ordinary engine rooms of other ships. Hawthorne's moment of awe was cut short by an alert showing that power needed to be rerouted to the ship's interior lighting as well as the inertial dampeners.
"Any idea what we're doing here ma'am?" One of the non-comms on the main floor below was likewise in awe of the nebula and was understandably curious.
"Not yet. They'll tell us if we need to know. Until then, we have one job. Make sure the power is there when they call for it. Great work so far everyone, let's keep it up."

It had been a sight to behold, but Ethan was ready to get back to work. The nebula and the space around it would take some time to scan. The subspace corridors were tricky things and the possibility of a Vaadwaur-Turei or an unknown enemy trying to take advantage of the situation was a real possibility.
=^=Lieutenant Hawthorne, please assemble a team that will help me fully deploy the sensor array, we might have to make quick adjustments to account for the nebula or any other anomalous readings we may encounter=^= Ethan said as he acknowledged the admiral's order regarding the sensors.
(Jolene)
Ethan was glad that he would be able to roll out the new sensor array. Its capabilities would become the fleet standard and there was something special about being the first, even though no one would ever admit it publicly.
Ethan made his way to main engineering, hoping that he could establish a nice working relationship with the engineering department. It would be the first time he would be working with Hawthorne and it would allow Ethan to more closely evaluate the ship's young engineer.
"Lieutenant, whenever you are ready?" Ethan asked as he arrived and took his place near a working console.

For the most part, the power levels throughout the ship were evening out around normal, or at least within the tolerances of most of the devices connected to the grid. Hawthorne had always been in the habit of viewing electricity as water flowing through a complex network of pipes, and today, a few of the "filters" she had put in place were doing a satisfactory job of taking care of any sudden surges or drops in the engine's power output.
=^=Lieutenant Hawthorne, please assemble a team that will help me fully deploy the sensor array, we might have to make quick adjustments to account for the nebula or any other anomalous readings we may encounter=^= Ethan said as he acknowledged the admiral's order regarding the sensors.
=^=Understood, I'll begin assembling a team immediately, Hawthorne out.=^= Of course! The sensor array had been one of the more interesting pieces of equipment that caught Jo's eye when she had signed off on it. She didn't know much about its purpose, but anytime the Daystrom Institute gave a prototype to a vessel. . . well, needless to say, its purpose would be one of importance.
Pulling a few of the Victory's sensor specialists together, Hawthorne had her team ready to go as the doors to engineering slid open to allow Commander Hope's entry.
"Lieutenant, whenever you are ready?" Ethan asked as he arrived and took his place near a working console.
"Yes sir, we are ready to deploy and calibrate the array when we are in position," Jolene replied with a nod. "The calibration process will likely be a lengthy one, simply due to all of the magnetic variation generated by the nebula. However, we could get lucky and find ourselves in a lull of magnetic activity. If I might ask sir, what will we be looking for once we have it online?"

"The calibration process will likely be a lengthy one, simply due to all of the magnetic variation generated by the nebula. However, we could get lucky and find ourselves in a lull of magnetic activity. If I might ask sir, what will we be looking for once we have it online?"
"To be honest, only the captain knows the reason we received this piece of technology from Daystrom, however I do know that we will initially be looking for one of these," Ethan said as he brought up the corresponding information on the engineering console screen. "These are subspace conduits that were first discovered by the USS Voyager on her trip back home from the Delta Quadrant. Various members of Section 47 dealt with an incursion with the Vaadwaur. Suffice it to say it did not end well. Even though we are not supposed to, I'm assuming that this mission will center around the Vaadwaur."
(Jolene)
"Alright everyone, may I please have your attention. We are tasked with initializing our brand new toy," Ethan said as he picked up his engineering tools," we must make sure that nothing goes wrong. Our mission depends on us doing a good job. As our chief has already stated, this job will be a long tedious one, but it must be done right. Once we have finished installing everything, we will conduct test on the sensor array to make sure that we are within normal working parameters. Lieutenant Hawthorne has given you your orders, so move out."
A collective yes sir could be heard throughout main engineering, which made Ethan feel slightly uncomfortable. It wasn't until that moment, that Admiral Lin's words finally hit him. The crew was a young and eager bunch, it was his job to make sure that they made it out of this assignment alive and healthy. That responsibility was a little bit daunting.
"Lieutenant, I see that we'll be working together," Ethan said smiling at his counterpart. This would be the perfect opportunity for the two to get to know each other, but Ethan would allow the chief to dictate if any conversation would take place.
As the two took their stations, Ethan got his tools and began to work. He knew that for the next five to eight hours main engineering would be his home.

Harash-kyat arrived at Engineering as the last of the sensor pallets were being unloaded from an anti-grav unit. Each component needed syncing with master computer system before deployment and fitting on the hull or in the crawl spaces around the Deflector dish.
He had been looking forward to looking at the Victory's engine room since first coming aboard and still felt angered and hurt that he had not been selected to be the CEO. He had served with distinction for many years and had trained scores of cadets aboard the USS Hepta many of whom he noted with displeasure were now outstripping him in rank.
Harash-kyat circled the equipment taking note of the ports and connections and looking with interest at the direct feed ODN interface. "Can I help you sir" a timid young Bolian ensign asked. The bolian had been unloading the last crate. "I doubt it" Harash-kyat snapped "But I bet I can help you?" "Err me sir?" The bolian replied looking at Harash-kyat's uniform.
Harash-kyat let out a snort of annoyance, "Yes yes I know I m in science teal but I m really an engineer. I ve been assigned to the science department as someones idea of a joke. Granted my papers on sub-space folding are works of scientific genius but still once I have had chance to speak to the Admiral I will be directed to Engineering. Until then I do out rank you and have far more experience. I believe I can be of considerable assistance and direction"
The young bolians eyes darted over to the far side of engineering where Hawthorne and Hope worked, "I m not sure Commander H..."
"Nonsense. I am an asset to any team. Now look lively and tell me what needs doing."
"Well. I was just finishing off unpacking... you could remove the silicon outer sealant and take off the protective gel film..."
"I beg your pardon" Harash-Kyat snorted "You want me to remove packaging! A Grazerite of my talents and you think I m best employed unpacking. This is nonsense, absolute nonsense. Jalli-tol will never believe this. Where is your manager. I want to speak to them immediately."
The bolian bobbed nervously and scuttled over to Hawthorne and Ethan where she stood talking quietly to them.
Harash-kyat remained where he was, arms firmly crossed, What was Starfleet coming to he wondered?

(apologies for the delay, was waiting on Lassiter...and I feel a bit out of the loop lol)
Kesha felt really out of place on the bridge of this massive starship. She'd much rather be in sickbay, where she felt she belonged, or training with the marines. She felt a pang of jealousy as she knew they were training hard for their upcoming mission, and here she was, stuck in the center seat while Magellan was off walking around on the bridge. SHe had seen him enter from his office but had opted to remain where she was until he indicated he wanted his seat back.
Briefly, she wondered how Aidan was faring since he was taking a very long time getting back to his duties. She entertained the idea of paging him, but just as quickly abandoned the idea. She'd give him a little extra time, considering the size of the ship, and the newness of it.
Like everyone else, she watched as they entered the nebula, the whirls of colours surely a sight to behold. But she was oblivious to the sounds around her even though she knew them to be there. She watched, as Magellan approached and she vacated his seat for him, quickly switching to her own so he could sit. "All systems report normal," she told him, "permission to go down and assist with the sensor array?" This sitting on the bridge, she was clearly restless, needing something physical to do.
