As the Captain and Executive Officer entered the Bridge, David moved over to the now vacant tactical station ... He was trying to see what the hell they had collided with.
"Something tells me this ISN'T a wild goose chase like I thought." Steven said, to no-one in particular.
"I agree, Sir. It looks like we've still got some of the sensors on line. They can't see anything with current settings. Interaction with the navigational shields and hull says there is something there." the Exec' confirmed.
"Sir ..... I'd suggest firing a volley of torpedo's ahead ... If we concentrate sensors and fire a staggered detonation pattern, we may pick something up." Tan said.
"Do it." Smith said, and nodded to Crystal.
When she was ready on sensors, David fired a volley of six photon torpedo's ... They spread out in a twenty degree arc as they left the ship. Seconds later the first detonated, followed closely by the remaining five. Two mines exploded ...
"Hell's bell's !" the duty Helm Officer said, as the explosions clearly showed over one hundred spherical globes, almost three meters in diameter and seemingly positioned at random ahead of the Olympia. It was clear to everyone on the Bridge that the ship had strayed into a minefield ... David put the Aft view on the main screen and fired two more torpedo's destroying one more behind them ... They were surrounded ! ... It was obvious that the Captain's prophecy was correct, someone certainly had something to hide, and didn't want anyone entering the system uninvited !
"Sir, there is one of those things forty seven meters off our port fore quarter." the Helm Officer said, trying hard to keep the nerves from his voice.
"We could bring it aboard." David said, receiving looks as is he'd suggested setting themselves on fire would fix the problem.
"And how do you suggest we do that Commander ... All saying I'd agree ?"
"Well ......" Tan said, knowing his next comment may well put him in Sick-bay for psychiatric evaluation, "They are cloaked, but obviously unshielded, otherwise we would have simply 'pushed' the mine out of the way with our shields ... We could take a shuttle, the Olympia rotate to face away from the mine then eject plasma residue, with luck it will outline the mine and the shuttle can 'nudge' it into the shuttle-bay using it's own shields. I'm guessing once we have it aboard we will be able to secure it for inspection."
"What about proximity fuses ?" Crystal said, moving to stand next to Tan and looking at his data.
"I'm guessing that if they had them, at least a dozen would have detonated by now, making our problem, not to mention, us, moot." Tan said, shrugging.
"You couldn't 'play' with the thing while it's still outside I suppose, or drop below them ?" the Helm Officer asked, his nerves finally showing, but Steven let the comment go as it as a valid point in his opinion.
"Wouldn't work. We need it inside to prevent any signal getting out to the nearby mines that it's neighbor was being tampered with and sending out a self-destruct order ..." Tan said, "As for getting under them, we can drop to 'Zee' minus one hundred thousand kilometers and move forward, but we'd still need to get back up at some point ... Same problem, much harder ... Either way, we can't navigate through the field, the mines are too close to allow us safe passage, even with someone prodding the sand ahead of us." he finished, referring to how the British got through the Sahara Desert in Earth's second world war.
Everyone looked at the Admiral ... It was ultimately his call ..........

Minefields were horrible and awkward. Crystal knew they had their uses, the self-replicating minefield that had blocked access to the gamma quadrant during the dominion war for example but that really didn't help when you were stuck in one. Presumably it would be quickest to go out the way they had come but is would still hardly be safe.
She began sweeping the available sensors through all the available frequencies. There clearly was something there now it was just a matter of being able to find them. They has shown up when the shock wave from the other mines hit them, which meant....
"Gottem." Crystal called across the bridge, she flipped image up on to the viewscreen. "Partially in subspace and partially cloaked. There are several pieces near our hull which are causing the odd readings." The image on the view screen flicked and Crystal smother a curse, she was using abused sensors in regions they were not truly designed for so it wasn't really surprising but it was annoying.

"Sub-space ....... That's going to make things tricky at best." David said, watching the data as it scrolled across the view-screen.
"Oh ?" Steven said, suddenly feeling a headache coming on.
"Well ... If we make the wrong move, or push two of these things together, it's possible the portion in sub-space could react adversely with the portion of the second mine that's in normal space. The detonation would cause a cascade effect in both realms, ans believe me, you wouldn't want to be around, or in this sector actually, if that happens !" Tan said.
"If we can see them, I can fly round them ! the Helm Officer said instantly.
"They're too close together Ensign." Tan said, pointing at the stats on screen, "We're four hundred and fifteen meters long with a beam of one seventy ...." he finished with a shrug, feeling a little sorry for pointing out the obvious to the young Navigation Officer, he'd been keen on too himself, once.
"Couldn't we put everything into the fore shields and clear a path through ?" she continued, eager to help.
"The closest mine is less than seventy meters to starbaord of our primary hull ... If that detonates we can expect the resulting cascade to remove at least one third of the ship in the detonation ... So ... Unless we can come up with a better idea ....." David left it there. He'd tried to get his point across and knew the Admiral had one hell of a decision to make.
One thing was certain, those mines were not going away ..........

John had been muddling about in engineering, making sure everything was ship shape for whatever they were getting themselves into. He was prepared to divert power from just about anywhere to just about anywhere. But currently, it was all just about moot. The Olympia now in the midst of a minefield, John had run every scan and diagnostic he could get his hands on. He knew that space was limited and that time was limited, so whatever they were going to do would have to happen quickly. He was called to the bridge, and so he made sure that repair teams were sent to their designated areas. He retained an open comm link to the bridge so he was appraised of everything that was said.
-------------------------------------------
Bridge
John heard the last suggestion get thrown out to hear Admiral Smith offer one of his own. "Perhaps we try separating the ship. By using small, more manueverable sections, I believe we will be able to make it through."
This was the first time John spoke, taking his position at the bridge engineering console. "It won't work sir. We don't have enough space to even separate."
"How do you figure, Ensign?" someone asked, though he did not know who, having turned to his station.
"We need more than forty-seven meters to separate."
"The nearest mine is only off the one side of the ship."
John rolled his eyes. "Even if the separation itself is successful, we won't be able to begin any kind of manuever, and then I go back to agreeing with Commander Tan's response about sending a shuttle first. It simply won't make a difference. Either way, there is going to be a big explosion that we will all be caught in the middle of."
The bridge remained silent for the next several minutes. At the very least, if they remained in their current position, they would not attract any more mines, however, John knew that the initial hit would most certainly have attracted attention. The bridge crew were obviously mulling over ideas, checking specs, ordering repair teams to designated areas (in John's case). He, as did the rest of the bridge crew, searched for a viable option.
John went back through everything he had heard on his way to the bridge, in hopes that one of their ideas might actually work. Flying around the mines was obviously out, as was putting all power to the forward shields. They obviously couldn't just shoot off a few torpedoes for the same reason as they couldn't plow through. At this point, the helmsman was right, they couldn't even see the mines. It reminded John of a memory of his family's old mansion. According to family legend, his great-great grandfather was so obsessed with protecting his family that he booby trapped the house and grounds. When he died, the family always thought that even though the booby traps were disarmed, they could always hear the sounds of traps being set and footsteps going in the hallways. It was thought the ghost of the man stayed behind to protect the house. The children and grandchildren always thought they saw a shimmer of him, but everytime they went around the corner to find him, he disappeared. To relieve the kids' fright, they parents always said he never disappeared, he simply had the ability to walk through walls, thus making the story more of a guardian angel thing. John would do just about anything to have a guardian angel right about now.
John looked up and at the viewscreen.....or at least a ghost...
He stood up. "Anybody believe in ghosts?" He was certain the entire bridge was glaring at him.
Tan responded, with a very slight hint of patronization. "What kind of ghosts?"
"The usual. Shrieking at high pitches, walking through walls, possessing suits of armor and walking around. That kind."
"I fail to see how this has any relevance," Tan said, going back to his own search.
"Well, according to any literary source on the subject, a ghost is simply a consciouness that lives on another plane of existence?"
"Like some sort of afterlife?" the helmsman asked.
"Sort of," John replied. "But I like to think of it as them living outside of normal space and time."
Obviously annoyed, Tan said, "This is all very 'thrilling,' but what are you getting at?"
John smiled and raised an eyebrow. "What if I told you that you don't have to die to become a ghost?"
There was silence.
------------------------------------------
Having requested the senior staff come to engineering, John had quickly set up his live simulation, containing a square wooden wall, about three meters tall and wide. A small apparatus was to one side.
"What is this, Ensign?" asked Admiral Smith.
John nodded. "Allow me to demonstrate."
He activated device and stood behind the wall, completely out of sight. A moment later, he stepped forward, passing directly through the wall. The others looked at him quizzically, obviously wanting an explanation.
John cleared his throat. "I give you, a molecular phase inverter." A couple eyebrows raised. "This device alters the normal structure of matter to allow one object to pass through another."
"I see a nice little parlor trick, but how does this help us?" asked Tan.
"In theory, I could tie this device into the Olympia's shield grid, and, using power from the warp core, I could generate a unique sub space field that would temporarily take us out of phase with the unverse. If we can find a phase variance that is different from the mines in normal space and subspace, it would simply be a matter of floating out."
"How did this not come up before?"
"Ummm....well, strictly speaking, we would be violating the Treaty of Algeron by doing this."
"How so?" asked the Admiral.
John sighed. "From what we know of cloaking technology, these inverters were the basis of both early Klingon and Romulan cloaking devices. Last I checked, we weren't allowed to use cloaking devices, and even though we would still be visible, if anyone non-Federation were to catch wind of this...well, you know that drill." His short history lesson over, John waited for a response.
"How long would it take to tie this into the grid?"
"A couple hours, less than that if I can take a few of the repair teams off their jobs," John replied.
"Make it happen," Admiral Smith ordered. "We'll use it as a last resort. When all is ready, route controls to the bridge."
John nodded. "Yes, sir."
-----------------------------------------
With nearly a half hour to spare, John re-entered the bridge to the awaiting staff. "It's ready to go." He took his position, awaiting the order.
The admiral sighed. "Do it."
John activated the system creating the subspace field. "I can give you half impulse, sir. That's all the power I can offer."
"Ahead, half impulse...."
(Tag all - I hope we make it...)

Molecular Phase Inversion, Crystal could have kicked herself for not thinking of it first but then again she had been focused on not contravening the Treaty. Still, the Enterprise D had 'allegedly' rather bent the treaty and more or less got away with it, the Olympia probably could also. Crystal was listening to reports on the locations of the minefield. It appeared that these mines were not self powered but a few explosions and the mass of the Oly and the force of gravity meant that quite a few of the mines were now in motion and some of them were getting closer...
"Commander?" Crystal turned "Ensign?" "There's something wrong with the power flow."
Crystal looked past Mari Pellagrini's elbow at the display, it did appear that there was more energy being used on the Olympia than could be accounted for, it wasn't much and under normal conditions it wouldn't have been noticed. However, at the moment with the damage, and the changes being made to the shields every joule of energy was being tracked.
"See if you can isolate where the energy is going to and then tag it for a repair team. We might have another short in the system."
"Yes, Sir." Crystal nodded, another small problem dealt with she believed they would get out of this, she had to.
"It's ready to go." The CEO said arriving on the bridge
The admiral sighed. "Do it."
"I can give you half impulse, sir. That's all the power I can offer."
"Ahead, half impulse...." Crystal settled into position as the Oly started into motion...

With the Olympia trundling along at only half-impulse, they wouldn't get to their intended destination any time soon, and Steve wasn't a patient man at the best of times.
Of course, he wanted the ship and crew to remain safe, but put of him just wanted to jump to full speed.
"Well, one thing is for sure," He said out loud to whoever was listening. "We can safely say that we are NOT on a wild goose chase. If there was nothing being developed here, then why the mines?."
It was a fair point. You don't just go putting up defences like this if there is nothing actually worth defending in the first place.
That's when he had another thought. If these people went to all his effort to keep ships out of the system, then who knows what other defensive methods they may have in operation on the planet. The Olympia had a seasoned crew, but still....things could go very bad, very quickly.
"How long until we are clear?"

"How long till we are clear?" came the question.
John had been very carefully watching the status of the entire set up, knowing full well that any little glitch or discrepency would screw the whole thing and not only blow them to oblivion, but half the quadrant along with it.
"Four minutes until we reach the other side." The minefield, when traveled straight through, was actually not that large, but at very low impulse, even a short distance can take an eternity. Even though this little jump was a far cry from an eternity, it certainly seemed like it with what was at stake.
"One minute until we reach the outer rim," John said, rifling over controls preparing to bring the field offline and get them the hell out of there.
Tan suddenly said, "I'm picking up an energy discharge coming from the upper port nacelle."
"Forty-five seconds!" John tapped his comm. "Engineering lock it down. The slightest charge could screw this whole thing!"
The helmsman took over the count. "Twenty-five seconds."
The worst then happened. "We are losing field integrity!" John yelled out. There was nothing he could do.
"Ten seconds!"
The sound of the explosion rippled through the ship as the entire crew was vaulted off their designated positions.
Outside the ship, the minefield went up in a domino effect.

David watched the screen intently as the Olympia navigated the myriad of stationary mines ... He had to compliment the Helm Officer, she was moving the four hundred plus meters of the ship like a downhill skier. But he could see the density was getting worse as they approached the edge of the field. "One minute until we reach the outer rim." the Engineer said. Tan was beginning to get worried as the ship made ever erratic moves as the Helm Officer tried to see a clear course. Suddenly John warned they were having problems, but before anyone could react the ship was slammed as one of the closest mines detected the hull and exploded ! The mines began to detonate in a domino effect, throwing the Olympia from side to side with such force that everyone on the Bridge were knocked unconscious almost instantly ... Twenty seconds later they were through. Drifting, inertia the only thing allowing the ship to put distance between herself and the remaining mines. Battered, bruised, the hull scarred with minor breaches. But the first explosion had done the damage .... Detonating less than thirty meters from the intersection of the secondary and tertiary sections, it had caused both external and internal structural damage. Decks around the damaged area's had been sealed as emergency bulkheads snapped into place, but it was possible that the ship had lost people .... ~~~~~~~~~~David opened his eyes to a smoke-filled Bridge, lighting flickered on and off. He sat up unsteadily as others regained consciousness slowly and moved to their stations. Steven and Crystal picked themselves up and took their seats. "STATUS ?" the Exec' shouted. John struggled to the Engineering console and began checks. "We're in bad shape ... Warp core is off-line, we have multiple breaches. Inertial dampers are off, we're drifting. The list goes on Commander." "Try to get main power back on-line John." the Admiral said, fighting off a wave of nausea. The Chief Engineer worked rapidly, assigning power where it was most needed. But then he stopped, a puzzled look on his face. "What the hell is that ?" he said, almost to himself, "Admiral .... I'm getting some weird readings from one of the damaged sections. Power spikes, minor radiation, I think I need to go and check this out." "I'll go." Tan said, nodding to Steven, "You are needed up here John. Have one of your team meet me at the intersection." he finished, heading for the turbo-lift .... ~~~~~~~~~~An Engineer was waiting for Tan when he arrived. He had scanned the maintenance crawl way to ensure there were no breaches. He introduced himself as Lieutenant Ari Jans as he handed David a small tool kit. "OK ... Lets go Ari." Tan said, opening the hatch cover. "The readings are coming from up ahead Sir. Sub-section twenty six alpha, to the intersection and left." the engineer informed him ... As they moved forward to the intersection, Tan looked around the corner. There was something protruding from the ruptured deck plating. He crawled forward slowly and moved to one side as the engineer joined him. Ari scanned the device frowning as the two watched the flickering readout. 42:50:16 42:50:15 **:**:03 08:**:*4 22:19:42 "What the ....." "It's a bomb." Tan said, "...... And it's having problems." "IT'S HAVING PROBLEMS !" the Lieutenant said almost hysterically. 14:01:09 03:01:08 00:00:16 00:00:15 Tan hit his Comm badge: =^= Tan to Bridge ... Close ALL emergency bulkheads around my position ... NOW ! =^= "Get the hell out." he ordered Jans, both turning in the confined space, but he couldn't get the engineer ahead of him. "Go Sir, I'm right behind you." the man said. Tan looked back at the readout: 00:00:08 00:00:07 00:00:06 Suddenly he was pushed from behind and fell face first into the rubberized flooring. He looked back to see a force-field snapping into place ... " NOOOOOOO !" he screamed, ripping at the access panel, but it was too late. Everything seemed to slow as he looked directly into the engineers eyes. Ari knew he had sacrificed himself. "Tell my wife, Saakje ...... I'm sorry." David wanted to reply, but the explosion prevented that. The force-field had contained the bulk of the explosion, preventing Tan's death, but the surrounding bulkheads couldn't protect him, they collapsed as force field collapsed ... Thankfully, due to the device being damaged, the matter/anti-matter elements didn't combine. David felt the burning searing heat as his mind tried to shut out the white on white light. his last conscious thought was almost relief .... Then .... Blackness ..........

OOC: Sorry about the delay after I promised to post regularly as well. Sorry.
"We are losing field integrity!" John yelled out. There was nothing he could do. Time stretched out, Crystal felt as if she had an age to think but there was simply nothing productive she could do.
"Ten seconds!" Crystal felt surprisingly calm as she braced in her chair.
***********
The next thing she registered was that she was laying on the floor of the bridge and there was a haze of smoke and dust in the air. That meant that there was both air and gravity which was a positive step. She got carefully to her feet aware that she was quite badly bruised but there seemed to be no serious damage done.
David was getting to his feet beside her and she could see other members of the bridge crew doing the same.
"STATUS" She called, her words snapping through the smoke and dust.
"We're in bad shape ... Warp core is off-line, we have multiple breaches. Inertial dampers are off, we're drifting. The list goes on Commander."
"Try to get main power back on-line John." the Admiral said, fighting off a wave of nausea.
The Chief Engineer worked rapidly, Crystal busied herself checking the members of the bridgecrew who were still on the deck. By some miracle they were all still alive although Chief Bryan was bleeding badly, there was no time to get a member of the medical staff up here so Crystal grabbed a first aid kit and did her best to stem the bleeding.
"What the hell is that ?" he said, almost to himself, "Admiral .... I'm getting some weird readings from one of the damaged sections. Power spikes, minor radiation, I think I need to go and check this out."
"I'll go." Tan said, nodding to Steven, "You are needed up here John. Have one of your team meet me at the intersection." he finished, heading for the turbo-lift ....
Crystal registered David leaving the bridge. She managed to stabilise the Chief but he wouldn't be coming round any time soon.
Crystal got to her feet with the medical kit still in hand
=/\= Tan to Bridge ... Close ALL emergency bulkheads around my position ... NOW ! =/\=
With half the bridge crew still out cold, some tending to the wounded and the rest working alongside Lieutenant Smith to try to some of the ship under their control again. All in all it meant that Crystal was the closest to the controls when Commander Tan's urgent request/order came through.
She jabbed the buttons to fulfill the request. =/\= Done, Commander =/\= The Oly shook, something bad had happened below decks. Crystal managed to ride this one out on her feet and waited for David to reply to her message, maybe fill her in on what had happened...
There was no response. That wasn't good. =/\= David, please respond. =/\=

David opened his eyes. Pain flashed through his head as the light hit home. After a few moments he tried again, taking care to open them slowly and allow light to filter in gradually. Finally, he could try to assess his situation ...
It wasn't good.
He was pinned under what looked like a large ceiling section of the bulkhead from the crawl-way. A large beam, one of the supporting joist's, had slammed across his legs and right arm, effectively immobilizing him in place. He could feel cold liquid against his side, so he knew he had been, or worryingly, still may be bleeding.
He almost choked suddenly, and began to cough violently as the acrid smell of burning material entered his lungs ... Using his let hand he tried to lift the section across his chest, but only got it a few millimeters before searing pain shot through him. He placed the section back down slowly and looked around. Behind him, the emergency bulkhead had slammed into place while past his feet, where the explosion had occurred, he could see a small breach in the outer hull, only a meter across and thankfully covered by a force-field.

He reached up and tried to tap his Comm badge, but it had dislodged during the explosion. He looked round quickly and managed to reach a piece of the floor covering and used it to drag the Comm badge within reach. Dizziness and nausea threatened to overwhelm him for a second and he had to lay his head back down to prevent vomiting.
After a moment he lifted his head and looked at the Comm badge. Managing to grab it he lifted if closer and pressed down ... Nothing ... He was turning it over in his hand when it crackled to life once more:
=^= Comman ...... thi ...... Can you hea ..... ease respond =^=
"Bridge ... Tan ... I'm injured, can you hear me ?"
=^= We're ...... ing to ............ =^=
David knew they hadn't heard him, it was obvious from the lack of response. He tried to reconnect, but the beam across his legs and arm suddenly shifted. Pain lanced through him and he fell into unconsciousness, the inert Comm badge falling from his hand ...........

=/\=Bridge ... Tan ... ... injured ... hear me ?=/\=
Crystal's hope was dying when David's message came through, she responded at once =/\= We're trying to get you out, hold on David =/\=
The comms circuits were fluctuating badly they died completely. Internal sensors were off more than they were on so she had no idea what David's condition was.
She knew they had to get him help but there seemed no way to extract him from where he was, with main power down there was no way...
An idea struck Crystal she only hoped internal computer links held up long enough. She powered up one of the shuttles, and used it's internal power to transport David straight to sickbay. It took her three attempts to establish a lock, she executed the transport, knowing there was a chance that the lock could fail.
The shuttled reported that the operation was a success but that meant that the buffers had cycled and something had been sent to sickbay.
She tied the shuttle's power cells into the internal comm system. At least they would know what was happening.
=/\=Sickbay, this is Commander Rose, did Commander Tan just arrive?=/\=
There was a very long pause before a voice Crystal didn't recognise came on the line.
=/\=He's here Commander. He's alive but we haven't been able to determine more yet.... Does this mean internal comms are running again?=/\=
=/\=For the moment, Rose out.=/\=
=/\=Commander Rose to Lieutenant Smith, I've powered up one of the shuttles and tied it in to internal comms. The grid seems stable so far. Is there any thing I can do to help from here?=/\=

David tried hard to reach the Bridge, but the weight of the fallen debris was too great and he finally, thankfully passed out ...
Six hours later:
"He's coming around." someone said.
"Can you open your eyes Commander ?" another voice said. David tried, and finally managed to comply. A nurse cleaned away some of the puss that had been sticking the lids together, "Well done ... OK, don't try to get up for a few moments, I want to run a full scan on the reconstruction."
She began working and Tan lay quietly wondering just 'what' they had reconstructed, the answer wasn't long in coming:
"OK ... You are doing well. You had one hell of a lucky escape in my opinion. If your chest, hips, and legs hadn't stopped that structural section, it would have cut right through you." she said smiling, "You're sternum and no less than eight ribs were shattered, along with your hips and the femur's of both legs. Left humerus, the carpels and metacarpals of your left hand were crushed. You suffered cuts and bruising too ... We've repaired ninety eight percent of the injuries, but you will need a few days bed-rest while the bruising subsides naturally. We also need to keep an eye on delayed concussion symptoms."
Tan was already trying to get off the bio-bed as the nurse recited his somewhat impressive injury list, but she wasn't having it.
"You said I was healed ?" Tan asked raising his eyebrows, managing not to slap the nurses hand from his aching chest.
"I said we had managed to fix 'MOST' of your injuries Commander ... But you need to rest. If need be I will ask the Doctor to confine you ........" she finished, waiting on the man to decide his fate.
"Did we loose anyone ... Else, in the explosion ?" Tan asked, finally resting back onto the bio-bed.
"No, Lieutenant Jans was the only fatality. Now, let me finish these scans of the repaired bone structure, and we'll see about getting you something to eat."
David lay in silence as the nurse checked his progress. Seemingly satisfied, she left him alone to write up her report. The second nurse approached with a tray containing a light meal. She helped him to a sitting position and placed the tray on his knee. He knew full well that should he decide to leave he would be restrained, and possibly relieved of duty on medical grounds, until the medic's felt he'd learned his lesson as to just 'who' was in charge down here ... Taking in the extent of the bruising on his arms and legs, he realized how close he'd come to not making it ... Looking at his plate, he used his fingers to pick up some of the salad, it was pleasantly refreshing. 'Maybe a near-death experience makes you appreciate the small things' he thought as he suddenly realized his apatite ..........

David had finished his meal some time ago. He really hadn't realized just how hungry almost getting blown to smithereens could make you.
The nurse had been back and injected some substance or other into his neck and he began to feel tired. He almost grinned at the fact the woman had decided to simply drug him rather than go through the role play game of trying to get him to rest on his own.
Opening his eye's he could see the reduced lighting normally used during a ships 'nightime' period, or from twenty two hundred until zero six hundred hours. Checking the chronometer he could see it was zero three thirty hours ... There was no-one to be seen in Sick-bay as he swung his legs off the bio-bed, but as he sat up the nurse appeared. He sighed inwardly and began to lift his legs back.
"You're awake." was all she commented as she ran a medical tricorder up and down. seemingly satisfied, she put the device down on the bed, "You can get up now if you feel up to it. You can change into a fresh uniform while I arrange your discharge."
Tan didn't argue .. Less than five minutes later he was walking out the door !
~~~~~~~~~~
"Deck four." he ordered as he entered the turbo-lift, then suddenly changed his mind, "Main bridge !"
As he stepped out he could see the watch Officer sat in the Command seat. he moved round and requested the ships' status. He listened as the Officer gave her report then asked if the Captain and Executive Officer were available. She said both were still in the Captains ready room. David told the woman to carry on and he went to the door and activated the chime.
"Enter .... Ah David, It's good to see you up and around." Smith said, obvious relief on the Captains face as Crystal echoed the comment, "You're sure you don't need time to rest, recouperate ?" he finished, handing Tan a drink, which he gratefully accepted, almost downing the amber liquid in one go.
"How are the repairs going ?" Tan asked.
"We're on top of it David." Crystal said quietly, "We'll be holding a memorial for Lieutenant Jans as soon as we can. He was a good Officer."
"Good, good ......." Tan said, finishing his drink and going to the replicator for a refil, "Right, it's pretty obvious that we have found something. Not to mention the obvious fact that whoever set those mines would have seen half the sector lighting up like some centennial celebration on drugs. So let's say this much, they either think we perrished in the fireworks, or, they know we are coming ... Either way, we need to get going, because frankly, I'm getting a little fed-up with [word deleted]-footing around getting nowhere fast ... Sir."
"We were talking about just the same thing before you arrived David." Smith said smiling, motioning for both his Officer's to take seats ..........
Crystal caught a glimpse of her reflection in one of the bridge display panels her hair was a mess, it had about half fallen out of its customary bun but it wasn't exactly in her way and she hadn't seen fit to redo the bun. Well, actually she had twice but some how fixing her third bun did not seem like a priority. She had a nice bruise along her right cheek bone which was where she had impacted the deck when the first mine had gone off. With the state the ship was in and the number of more seriously injured people getting her bruise fixed was hardly a priority. She also had a dark smudge above her left eye. She was pretty sure that one was mostly surface carbon from scorched lubricant and burnt circuitry rather than a bruise. She also has dark circles under her eyes which was rather annoying as she had, following Dr Reilly's advice, managed to get rid of the last set she had had and there hadn't been dark circles under her eyes for nearly two months now. Then again she had been up for, Crystal checked the chronometer and did a quick mental calculation, 37 hours 47 minutes not counting the being stunned for a minute or two.
The Olympia was in better shape than she had been. Most of the systems had been restored not that they were all completely stable but things were running 95% of the time which was definitely a step up.
She had heard that Commander Tan had survived but Lieutenant Jans had not, but she hadn't really had time to feel either relief or grief, both of which she knew would come.
Crystal was current collating the results of all the different repair parties and getting ready to report to the Admiral. She finished up her summation and then walked over and pressed the buzzer for the Admiral's ready room. He called for her to enter and when she did he promptly offered her a drink. Crystal asked for a coffee with no milk and two sugars, she knew it wasn't quite what Steven had in mind but anything else and she would probably be literally asleep on her feet before she finished her report.
She finished her report. "In summary, Admiral, I think that although the Oly isn't quite back to complete function we can get underway and get on with things."
The door chime went before Steven could reply
"Enter .... Ah David, It's good to see you up and around." Steven said
Crystal looked up and smiled at David. "It is good to see you."
"You're sure you don't need time to rest, recuperate ?" The Admiral handed David a drink, he also got Crystal another coffee.
"How are the repairs going ?" Tan asked.
"We're on top of it David." Crystal said quietly, "We'll be holding a memorial for Lieutenant Jans as soon as we can. He was a good Officer." Now would not be a good time for the grief to hit, the relief was rolling through her.
"Good, good ......." Tan said, finishing his drink and going to the replicator for a refill, "Right, it's pretty obvious that we have found something. Not to mention the obvious fact that whoever set those mines would have seen half the sector lighting up like some centennial celebration on drugs. So let's say this much, they either think we perished in the fireworks, or, they know we are coming ... Either way, we need to get going, because frankly, I'm getting a little fed-up with [word deleted]-footing around getting nowhere fast ... Sir."
"We were talking about just the same thing before you arrived David." Smith said smiling, motioning for both his Officer's to take seats.
With one and a half mugs of coffee inside her Crystal felt that it was safe to sit down as she wasn't likely to fall asleep at least not right now.
"Main power is mostly stable, Lieutenant Smith and his team have worked near miracles in the time we have had."
They had been traveling into the system at full impulse while repairs were made to sections of the ship. Now they were back to one hundred percent the Olympia could jump to warp at will.
"Sir, I'm picking up something on the seventh planet." the Helm Officer said, puzzled.
"What do you have ?" Smith said as David moved to the science station, the junior Officer stepping aside.
"Looks like structures, big, I mean you could fit a couple of Galaxy Class vessels in there and still have room ...... No life-signs. The place is the size of a small city. I'm detecting damage on the outskirts, looks like there was some sort of ............ Hell !" Tan said, shocked at the readings, "Sir, if my scans are correct it looks like there was some sort of massive explosion. I can see a circular outline, no, it's a crater, almost four kilometers in diameter, nearly a kilometer deep. Something damn 'BIG' blew the hell out of that city I'd say."
"Captain, there are power fluctuations coming from the surface, so whatever happened wasn't in the far past. Radiation readings in the ionosphere point towards an antimatter explosion within the last four to six months maybe." the Helm Officer added.
Crystal turned to David:
"Still no life-signs, but would it be safe to go down there ?" she asked. So Tan carried out several checks and confirmed they would be in no danger from radiation or residual element deterioration, but final checks would be made once above the site he confirmed.
"Helm ..... Take us in. Establish standard orbit. We'll do all the checking we can before deciding on going down there." Smith said.
David let the duty Science Officer back and moved to Opps.
"Helm. keep an eye on long-range scans. I want to know the second you find any other vessels entering the system." Tan ordered.
"Aye Sir." the young Ensign said.
~~~~~~~~~~
Their cautious approach to the seventh planet took almost two hours. Helm confirmed that there was nothing, or at least, nothing she could detect, within fifteen hours of them at high warp. That of course didn't mean there wasn't anyone closer. For all they knew there could be a second base on the next planet, shielded, hidden from scanning ... Who could know !
Tan went to the Captain's ready room:
"Ahh David, what's our status ?"
"We've made orbit and have begun scanning the surface. I would suggest we make a thorough scan of the planet, then establish a geostationary position above the blast site, run a full spectrum scan before making a final decision on beaming down."
"Agreed ... Well meet in two hours." Steven said getting up, "Let's hope whatever they were doing they perished in that explosion. Though I somehow have my doubts. You have the Conn David."
Tan went back onto the Bridge and sat down. He watched the planet below rotate effortlessly below them, wondering what the hell they would find once the Admiral fave the go-ahead for an away mission ..........

The big explosion on the planet below had been rather unexpected. There was a war on but things that could simple devastate a 2 km radius. Matter-antimatter was the obvious explanation, but they had to know for certain. The Olympia had enter orbit and scans had been started. Crystal knew that she was likely to be leading the away team. Her scientist instincts wanted to know what had happened down there but she also wanted to know that the people she was taking down there were as safe as they could be.
Crystal was slightly confused by the data coming in from the sensors. The ionosphere clearly showed signs of being blasted by a explosion but the rock under the crater did not; or at least the readings were not conclusive. That was puzzling. Possibly, the amount to energy released had turned one of the sublayer minerals into something which scattered the sensors. It was also possible that such a mineral had occurred naturally. Of course, possible did not mean that it was likely to happen, indeed there was no sign that either had occurred. A crater, large buildings and no life signs. Many things could have happened. None of them were good. Crystal couldn't say that she was looking forward to investigating the deaths of so many, but she did want to find out what had happened.

Steve was still in his Ready Room, going over various reports, trying to make sense of the bits and pieces of data that was coming in to him. After taking in as much as he could, he got up and walked towards the door.
He strode out onto the bridge, glanced out at the view on the screen and had a quick check on a couple of the readouts on the consoles.
"Well, nothing conclusive is going to get found out unless we go down there." He said, turning to David. "And by 'we', I mean you, Crystal and the rest of the Away Team of your choosing."
He scratched the back of his head and sighed. 'Things are never easy' he thought to himself.
"Make sure you find out as much as you can, if there is even anything to find. For all we know, they have actually perfected this cloaking device we are looking for and are staring right at us without us even knowing."
He moved towards the command chair. "And I don't think I need to tell you to be careful down there." He added, with a grin.
It didn't sit well that the Olympia could potentially be a sitting duck while the Away Team were on the surface, but there was not a lot that Steve could do about that. The quicker they found what they were looking for and were back on the ship, the better, as far as he was concerned.

"And I don't think I need to tell you to be careful down there."
"You don't think this warrants your attention ?" David asked, almost incredulous !
"I have every confidence you will get what you need David. Someone has to mind the store."
Tan looked at the man, and for the first time in there professional relationship. Indeed, the first time he could recall, he doubted his friends' decision. Crystal had already picked out Ensign Smith and a Science Officer, along with two Security Officers ... Holding his tongue, Tan followed her into the turbo-lift in silence.
~~~~~~~~~~
"Energize." the Exec' ordered.
David looked around the cavernous expanse ... Hell, this hadn't shown up on the scans the Olympia had made. They should be in a small open section of an excavation, not in the middle of a cathedral-sized space ... The Security Officers, along with the Chief Engineer moved forward, and walked right through the wall.
"This can't be right !" David said, checking his readings once again, "This space is registering at less than one fifty one cubic meters from the ship. Something in the region of a six by nine room, but my tricorder registers the area at four sixty meters, by twenty four hundred, by two hundred twenty ... Equating to approximately two hundred and forty 'MILLION' cubic meters ... You could fit the Olympia in here twice .. Bloody hell !" Tan exclaimed, impressed.
"OK." Crystal said, "We need more people down here. and we need to figure out how to get rid of these projected 'walls' so we can examine the facility thoroughly. She tapped her Comm badge:
=^= Away team to Olympia =^=
=^= Go ahead Commander =^= Smith replied.
=^= Sir .. We need more people .. I would also suggest you beam down to see this for yourself .. Because believe me whatever we're looking for is damn BIG .. It is also possible it has been moved ! =^= Tan added.
=^= I'm looking at your readings now Commander =^= Smith answered.
=^= Sir .. We're looking at an area thirty over times the size of the Olympia .. We simply can't do this with one team =^= Tan insisted, then Crystal and David waited for the Captain's reply ..........
OCC: Sorry work's been beating me up of late.
Crystal kitted up for the away mission almost on autopilot. She did not know what to expect down there so it was a case, once again, of being ready for anything. She took her place on the transporter platform. Checked that the rest of the team were ready and then gave the order.
It was pretty dark where they arrived and it took Crystal's eyes a moment to adjust. When they had adjusted she blinked again. This couldn't be right. The space was massive. Her tricorder said you park the Oly and one of her sisters in here and still have space over. The walls she had seen on the scans on the ship were still there, but at the same time they weren't. Some of the team moved forward to check the nearest of the walls. It soon became clear that physically, at least, the wall wasn't there. That was interesting, and concerning.
"OK." Crystal said, "We need more people down here. and we need to figure out how to get rid of these projected 'walls' so we can examine the facility thoroughly. She tapped her Comm badge:
Crystal wasn't sure where he had got that deduction from but it made as much sense as anything she had come up with to explain the strange readings she had seen earlier.
=/\= I'm looking at your readings now Commander =/\= Smith answered.
=/\= Sir .. We're looking at an area thirty over times the size of the Olympia .. We simply can't do this with one team =/\= Tan insisted.
Well, technically they could but it would take hours for them to make a proper survey of this space and, who knew how many more there were. It would be far more efficient for more people to be involved. She stared at her tricorder screen, the readings made no more sense that the ones she had, but she was a scientist and a starfleet officer and she would find out.
David moved away toward one of the nearby 'walls' as Crystal continued to update the Captain. One of the Security Team followed Tan wearily looking left and right. As David reached the wall he reached out ... Nothing ... He moved closer ... "Sir !" the Security Officer said in warning, but David wasn't stupid. He set the tricorder to do a three sixty degree scan then before the Lieutenant could object, he thrust his hand into the wall ...... After a few seconds he pulled his arm back and checked the readings. "Commander." he shouted to Rose, relaying the information as she approached "Looking at these readings there's an identical room behind this projection. I'd like to move through and see what we have on the other side." Crystal didn't seen too enthusiastic at the idea, but Tan assured her that if it was simply another room, or rather, an extension of the one they were in, then all he would need to do is step backwards to return. The Lieutenant stepped forward offering to go through first, but the Commander gave a definite 'no' on that request before reluctantly nodding to Tan, he wanted to go alone but Rose insisted that the Security Officer follow behind after a few seconds "as a back-up only" she said. Taking a breath, David readied himself them stepped through the seemingly solid 'wall' ...... It was only his reflexes, and the fact that he'd long come to know that 'nothing' is as it seems, no matter how simple, that saved him from serious injury ... His first step was 'within' the wall itself, and he took the second tentatively, and landed on thin air ! ... As the other side of the wall sprang into view he was already falling into a channel, over a meter wide, and almost two meters deep. He fell forward and managed to brace himself against the impact as he turned and landed on his side, rolling painfully to a kneeling position. He looked up, suddenly realizing the Lieutenant was about to follow ! "DON'T STEP THROU ......" he shouted. But it was too late. The man appeared, quicker and less cautious given there was no warning. He fell forward, slamming his chest against the far edge of the channel. There was a distinct 'crack' as the man sustained several broken ribs, before falling heavily to the floor in agony. Tan knelt beside the man asking why he came through ... "I ..... Didn't hear you say any .... thi." the Lieutenant said through gritted teeth. "Wha ...." Tan stood up and hit his Comm badge: =^= Tan to Rose .. DO NOT .. I repeat .. DO NOT .. Send anyone through the wall .. There is zero verbal communication possible through the field =^= =^= David ? =^= Crystal's puzzled voice came back. =^= Be aware Commander .. There's a damn channel on the far side .. One meter wide approximately two meters deep .. I fell in but was braced but the Lieutenant fell heavily .. He has a few broken ribs and possibly internal bleeding .. When you come through be ready for the drop .. I'd suggest you take a step into the wall then a small jump into the channel .. We need the Medic on this side quickly so send him through first will you =^= =^= Stand by Commander =^= Crystal said. A moment later a second Security Officer jumped into the channel a few meters from Tan. He came to the pair and knelt to deal with the Lieutenant. Crystal and one of the other Security Officers followed quickly. David had climbed onto the 'floor' of the new room and was scanning. He looked back at the Exec' and shook his head ... Ahead and to either side were the same 'non-existent' walls, and god-only knows what they had in store for the Olympia crew on the far sides .......... OOC: Feel free to find out that this channel is the only obstacle, or let it run into several of the rooms, giving us an on-going safety problem as we explore the area, just think it might be good to add a little shock value until we find this erm, whatever it is ...
David scanned the area, again ... This time he allowed for the fact that each 'wall' may not actually be there. He was moving forward when a klaxon sounded ...
He looked back at the Exec' who drew her phaser and motioned for the remaining Security Officers to follow suit. Tan was about to check the next wall when the lighting changed. The 'room' lighting dimmed and what was obviously a landing square illuminated. He began to run back to the channel, yelling that everyone needed to get back through to their original room when the roof began to open !
Two of the Security team lifted their colleague off the floor of the channel and pushed him through the wall. David and Rose readied themselves but remained to watch the opening, almost certain what was happening. Within seconds they had their confirmation ...
A ship. Large, though maybe only half the size of the Olympia was descending smoothly.
"We're about to have company. We need to get the hell out of here !" David said, pushing the Exec' through the wall. With one last look he stepped through after her. He hoped that whoever had arrived wouldn't drop the holo-walls ..........
After Steve cut the comm channel with David, he opened up another channel to order a Security team to meet him in Transporter Room 1 on the double.
He got out of his chair and headed towards the Turbolift, leaving the Bridge in capable hands. As the life was descending, Steve was getting a bit more anxious.
'All three of the most Senior crew on the planet...this had better not turn ugly.' He thought as he reached his destination.
As he entered the Transporter Room, he noticed the Security team were already there, and all geared up. Checking over his own phaser, Steve made sure he was all sorted to go.
Stepping on the pad, and motioning for the team to do the same, he turned to the transporter chief. "Lock on to Commander Tan's combadge and transport us there." He looked to make sure the team were all ready. "Energise" He said, and then a moment later he dematerialised and reappeared on the ground.
Steve stepped up to David, who was looking rather agitated to say the least. "Report. What on Earth is going on down here?"
"We're about to have company. We need to get the hell out of here !" David said, pushing the Exec' through the wall. With one last look he stepped through after her. He hoped that whoever had arrived wouldn't drop the holo-walls.
The team remained silent as the ship landed ... Crystal and David had moved everyone to the far side of the room, hoping to have some cover should the holo-wall be dropped. They waited ten minutes then David approached the computer-generated wall carefully, resting a tricorder on the floor, he slowly pushed it through. Afer several seconds he slowly withdrew the device and made his way back the the Exec' ... He was about to inform her of the readings when he heard the tell-tale whine of a transport in progress. Steven and several Security Officers materialized. Tan immediately signaled for silence !
"Report. What on Earth is going on down here ?"
"Sir ..." Tan said, handing the Admiral the tricorder, "There's a massive vessel on the other side of that holo-wall, I've scanned the area twice to confirm, but the readings show that whoever landed it has beamed to a second vessel in orbit ... I think this is the test vehicle for the new cloak. They're hiding it here for whatever reason."
"You are certain there is no-one other than us inside this complex ?" Crystal said.
"Just Olympia Officers." Tan said with a shrug. Then waited for one of his Senior Officers to make a decision on what to do next ..........
Crystal walked relatively slowly along the channel with her tricorder in hand. There was a strange crystallization to some of the minerals here which hadn't been present above.
When they received notification that a ship was coming in everything started to make sense.
"We're in a blast channel. Everyone out before the thruster exhaust gets here".
Crystal didn't shout but her voice was loud and clear sounding almost like a bell in the enclosed space. She suited action to words holstering her tricorder and backing up a bit taking two running step, planting her right foot, springing and catching hold of the lip of the channel forty centimeters above her head. She efficiently pulled herself up. By the time Crystal got herself settled on the higher level the rest of the away team had either gone right or left. Crystal had the tricorder back out and scanning when the ionizing blast from the ship's thrusters headed down the channel.
The away team regrouped, Crystal idly noted that she'd scraped both her palms. It didn't hurt yet and was in any case better than being literally cooked. "Report. What on Earth is going on down here?" Crystal looked up at her CO's voice. She hadn't heard the transport. There was an ever present crackle still sounding in her ears. She had definitely been a bit too close to the exhaust.
"Sir ..." Tan said, handing the Admiral the tricorder, "There's a massive vessel on the other side of that holo-wall, I've scanned the area twice to confirm, but the readings show that whoever landed it has beamed to a second vessel in orbit ... I think this is the test vehicle for the new cloak. They're hiding it here for whatever reason."
"You are certain there is no-one other than us inside this complex ?" Crystal said. Checking that she had heard things correctly.
"Just Olympia Officers." Tan said with a shrug.
"All this," Crystal gestured to the holo-walls, has to be eating power and yet we haven't been to locate the power source. If that is also being cloaked then that tells us more about what sort technology they are using. Of course it would be even better if we could track it down."
"...... If that is also being cloaked then that tells us more about what sort technology they are using. Of course it would be even better if we could track it down." Crystal was saying, but David was looking off into the distance, "David, you with us here ?" she said, looking in the direction of his gaze:
"Well, I'm guessing you 'ALL' see the fact that the holo-wall has vanished, and the lighting seems to be gradually reducing." Tan said, walking towards the stationary ship ... It wasn't a configuration he was familiar with, but that meant nothing of course. Whoever was working on this cloaking technology wasn't likely to be getting hold of a ship of the line to play about with.
"The place is powering down." Crystal said suddenly realizing.
"It's obvious there are no internal sensors in operation, unless they've already been activated and our recently departed guests are on their way back." Steven said, scanning the now enormous space with his tricorder ... He instructed the main group of his Security Officers to check the perimeter of the cavern, then nodded toward the ship itself:
"Lets go." .....
~~~~~~~~~~
They had been on board almost forty five minutes. David was becoming more convinced by the minute that something wasn't right. Could it be that the cloaking technology was aboard the 'other' ship, and this was being used to see what sort of range, or footprint, the device could have. But he dismissed that quickly as he moved through the ship. Security contacted the Admiral informing him they had yet to find any substantial power source, but had come across numerous sub-stations that frankly, in the Lieutenant's opinion, couldn't keep the lights on, let alone supply the power required for the holographic wall ... He instructed them to keep searching and relayed the information to Tan and Rose ...
=^= Admiral .. I'm in the main cargo area Sir .. I think you and the Exec' should come down here .. I have the feeling you are not going to be too happy =^= David said, then closed the Comm.
Five minutes later his Senior Officers entered the 'bay ...
"Crystal, see if you can access that terminal and download all the relivent data on this technology ...So what am I looking at exactly ?" Steven said to David, trying to figure out the miss-match of conduits, power cells, computer interfaces, and the other seeming jetsam laying around the bay, "This looks like a pile of spares !"
"That is 'EXACTLY' what it is !" Tan said, removing a panel on what outwardly resembled a much larger version of the transporter consoles on the Olympia, "See, there are no Heisenburg compensators, no transition coils, no phase discriminator ... It's a pile of junk. Whoever we got this information off was scamming us royally. There are four of these in here alone, and each could possibly beam a tricobalt rod from 'A' to 'B' as long as 'B' was less than a few meters away. I certainly wouldn't risk anything with a pulse, that's for sure !" he finished, sticking his head inside the cabinet housing.
"Sir ..... We're in trouble." Crystal suddenly said, "I've managed to get all the information, but believe me, you couldn't build a rocking horse with what I've got."
=^= Lieutenant Enricks to Admiral Smith =^=
=^= Smith .. What do you have Lieutenant ? =^=
=^= Sir .. This place is wired to the hilt .. Several what look like bulkhead partitions have begun to sink into the deck and I'm pretty sure we've triggered some sort of 'self-destruct' mechanism =^=
David pulled his head out of the console and looked up at his Commanding Officer.
=^= Hold one Lieutenant =^= as Tan began to speak:
"They knew ..... They knew all along that Star Fleet would send a ship to investigate the rumors ... We got through the minefield almost without a scratch, and despite detonating a large portion of those mines, no-one came to investigate fully ...... They brought this heap here and left us to find it ...... There is enough crap in this thing to ensure this 'planet' will barely survive the combinded detonations, let alone US !"
=^= Sorry Admiral .. But as close as we can figure this out .. We have moments before this place goes up .. And us with it .. Sir ! =^= Enricks insisted.
Suddenly klaxons began to scream throughout the massive cavern, obviously for dramatic effect, and it was working ...
=^= Smith to Enricks .. Get your team to a safe beam-out point .. Don't wait for us .. Get back to the ship .. Smith out =^=
There was no reply from the Lieutenant. Tan got to his feet and joined Steven and Crystal. He felt, rather than heard the first of the explosions, and looked at the Admiral:
=^= Smith to Lieutenant Enricks .. Status ! =^=
"I'd say now would be the time Admiral." David said as the deck shuddered under the strain of a massive explosion ... Steve tapped his Comm badge:
The next detonation was close, too close for comfort ... David looked at the open panel, and the serious amount of combustible, not to mention highly unstable fissionable material packed into it.
=^= Smith to Olympia .. Emergency transport .. Three to beam out .. NOW =^=
The bulkhead in front of them suddenly buckled under the tremendous pressure of a detonation only meters away. All three turned away from the razor-sharp shards of material that was launched across the cargo bay.
=^= OLYMPIA .... THREE TO BEAM OUT ! =^= ... Steven yelled over the din !
Light ... Heat ... Tremendous pressure, suddenly everything disintegrated in front of them as the fissionable materials concealed within the mock cloaking device gave up their energy in one massive explosion ..........
