Cain glared with cold disdain as she watched the Denobulan enter her small office. "You are late Commodore, I do not relish been kept waiting." She slid a Padd across her desk with a impatient sigh. "The Federation Council has received a request for peace talks from the Kasan'thar , I'm sure you remember them."
Gheskori fought back a grin. The Admiral's greeting was characteristically unceremonious, and she glided over his recent promotion by making his rank sound like a punishment. "Admiral, agreeable to see you again. I remember them well. Judging from your tone, I'm guessing the Federation has denied the request?"
She shook her head slightly. "They have decided to grant the request in the hopes it could end the hostilities, to show Starfleet is genuine in a desire for peace they are sending the U.S.S Rainier commanded by Vice Admiral Jackson."
Rear Admiral Cains face grew even more cold with disgust. "This whole thing is a farce and we are being played, the Kasan must have an angle, they are violent mindless creatures with no sense of how truly insignificant they are.. Admiral Jackson disagrees."
"Interesting. Will I be playing a more than passive role in all this?"
"I have persuaded Starfleet to send you and the Enzio as advisor's.. find out what the Kasan are planning and make sure they fail, do not allow Jacksons rose tinted view of the universe lead the federation into a trap."
It made sense, given Gheskori's previous experience with the Kasan'thar, along with approximately a quarter of the Enzio's crew. He knew the nature of the Kasan'thar; there was little reason to believe they had changed. "Should I obscure my investigations? Am I to deceive Admiral Jackson?" He couldn't keep the mock moral outrage out of his voice completely.
He read through the PADD, debating internally between instinct and principle. "Is there any chance at all that the Kasan'thar's request is genuine?"
"I have no interest in what you tell Jackson, do as you will." She shrugged. "But remember she is Betazoid and a gifted one at that." She shook her head. "Evevn if it is genuine the Federation shouldn't accept, we would only be delaying a conflict.. we should commit to it now and cripple them for good." She sat up straighter. "Anything else?"
Ghes linked his hands behind his back, the PADD gripped tight in one hand. "Nothing further, Admiral. I will get my people on the documentation regarding the peace talks immediately. I'd like to get a handle on what exactly it is they're proposing. I should've known you'd get me on this, given our previous with the Kasan'thar."
He resisted the urge to perform a mock bow and made to leave the Admiral's office. He stopped as he reached the threshold, looking over his shoulder but not meeting Cain's steely eye. "Admiral. Where exactly is the Rainier right now?"
"Next time you are given a padd with mission details it would be a good idea to read it all, rather than asking questions that reveal the true extent of your stupidity." She sigh with exasperation. "Rainier will be arriving at the station in approximately ten minutes, it's the Sovereign class one.. even someone with your 'keen' power of observation can't miss it." She took a deep breath. "Now get out I can only tolerate fools so long."
"I'll contact Admiral Jackson as soon as she docks to put the Enzio at her full disposal."
Gheskori briskly exited the office, slightly amused but for the most part irked. He could always rely on Admiral Patrizia Cain to raise his self esteem. She had the audacity to deride the officer she'd entrusted with offsetting Admiral Jackson's principled position; she certainly had her self-confidence, as well as a well-founded notion that Gheskori felt the same as her about the Kasan'thar.

"According to our reports their medical technology is well behind ours, the long conflict they have had with the Tholians has meant most of their efforts are military in nature." Stacey took a deep breath as she continued. "Offering them basic medical supplies is a good starting point unfortunately we can't offer anything specific as our understanding of their physiology is limited, we know their species is related in some way to Tholians but how similar they are exactly is unknown."
She rubbed her forehead as she sighed slightly. "What we do know is that like the Tholians I won't be able to sense anything from them nor will I be able to pick anything up from body language like I would in any other negotiating room." She leaned forward and tapped the computer terminal. "Computer end log."
Stacey drank the last of her tea and walked out onto the bridge. Looking at the centre chair for a moment she took a deep breath before deciding it wasn't worth sitting down.
"Jackson to all senior staff, once we dock with Starbase 24 all senior officers are to report to Starbase conference room fourteen on deck twelve, please do not be late Jackson out."
"Helm begin docking procedures, and send a message to the Enzio I want there senior staff joining ours for the briefing."
** Starbase 47 **
Cain squared her shoulders as she stated for the fifth time. "I still think you should take the Tricolbalt device."
Jackson let out a frustrated sigh, and replied. "Only if I can strap you to it before we fire it." She waved a hand. "This is a peace conference I am not going in there armed to teeth ready for battle, I've already agreed to take the Enzio with us that is more than enough."
She pointed to a chair at the far end of the large conference room and said. " They all should be arriving soon, now go sit down and stay silent, and try not to start any wars on your way there."
Stacey hated Cain with every fibre of her being, since the moment the two met over thirty years ago it was hatred at first site, having Cain still breathing in and out was enough of an annoyance to put Stacey in a foul mood, it wasn't made any easier by the fact she was nervous about working with another crew.
She didn't personally know any of Enzio's crew, all she knew was what she had read in their files, but as always that never revealed much. After reading pages of information on Gheskori all she really knew still was he was a Commodore and he was Denobulan.

A picture came to her mind; a warm, perfect fall day back at home. She was sitting in the front porch swing, breathing in the autumn smells of chrysanthemums and dry leaves. Then, a stirring in the leaves in the yard as a whirlwind tumbled them in invisible circles, tiny at first, then picking up more and more momentum. A miniature tornado zigged and zagged across the lawn with no preconceived direction.
That’s how Kay felt – caught up in a whirlwind.
Once the Rainier had safely escaped the sub-space void, Kay thought her emotions would steady. After all, their return to normal space, unscathed and with all crew safe, should have offered her a closure of sorts. She should feel redeemed of her past. But, somehow, the ending was empty.
Now, as she headed to the meeting on Starbase 24, her thoughts were jumbled. Maybe she needed some uninterrupted down time, she thought, and promised herself to schedule some holo deck time.
Kay crossed the threshold into the conference room and stopped dead in her tracks. Sitting at the far end of the table was none other than Admiral Cain.
“Nothing good will come of this meeting,” Kay said to herself, “No matter what it’s about.”

The last traces of the telepathic plague had finally been eliminated from the Rainer's crew, Lorna included. As she had suspected she had been infected. After much research a further case of a very similar infection had been found thirty years ago, it had been hypothesised that it had been a result of a Tal Shiar experiment but no confirmation had ever been made. In the end the Rainer staff had managed to isolate the active element and create a counter measure. Of course by that point the illness had run it's course in the earliest patients. Lorna was ensuring that monitoring was continued and she had just finished updating all of the medical records.
She was looking forward to curling up with her wife and getting some sleep. They had been on opposite sides of the unofficially quarantine for most of the mission. Cris had worked tirelessly throughout she had somehow managed to avoid becoming affected by the plague. There had been some private concerns that her Romulan blood might mean she could become affected while not measurably telepathic .
Lorna closed down the computer and went back to her quarters. Cris had got dinner ready and all was at peace. At least for the moment which was was all you could hope for as a member of medical staff.

"I apologize commander," Saryn replied as he packed up his medkit then attached his precious sword underneath his robes. "I am headed for a meeting you ought to be present at too, I cannot see to your physical at this moment."
He looked over at Savin, who had pleaded to go with him given his currently still frail physique. "After the briefing, I will see to it," Savin prompted quietly, adjusting his own robes and sword. They were in civilian medical garb, traditional brown robes according to Vulcan custom, with their weapons attached to denote their own heritage. While it was known the weapons would never be drawn unless there was an open conflict, they very much represented their owners skillset.
"Savin will meet with you after the briefing," Saryn relayed the message.

====
It had been a while since either had set foot on the massive starbase. Father and son spent some time wandering around before the computer directed them to the conference room. By that time, Saryn was already exhausted and out of breath. "You should have stayed on the Enzio," Savin scolded as he helped his father to a seat, then took a respectful several steps back. He would keep an eye on his father, and on the meeting but he would not get involved if he didn't need to. Besides, he couldn't hear what was going on anyway.

Ghes loosened his jacket, sighing lightly as he settled back behind his stacked desk. "A certain Admiral, that we both have previous experience of, has ordered us to accompany the USS Rainier to facilitate peace talks. Details are on the padds." James scanned cursorily through the front padd. "The Kasan'thar." Gheskori nodded. "We've been selected given our previous experience with the species. I suppose you need no clues to know that the flag officer who gave me this assignment is none other than Admiral Patrizia Cain. Unsurprisingly, she's not entirely trusting of the Kasan'thar's professed desire for peace, and nor am I." Ghes paused, "I have the feeling she's sending the Enzio to ensure the senior CO keeps a clear head during the negotiations. We're to temper any naive impulses from the USS Rainier and her captain, who it should be remembered, is a Vice Admiral." "We're to convene on the Starbase for a full briefing with both sets of senior officers present. Ideally I would brief our own staff beforehand but we're running short of time. I'll fill the staff in after the conference, depending on what transpires during. That will be all, Commander. Can I expect to see you at dinner this evening?" Ghes reviewed the primary file on the Kasan'thar's negotiation request one more time. He was looking for something, anything, that would change his mind and make him think the request was genuine after all. As much as he distrusted the Kasan'thar, he wanted to believe that they had changed, that they could tame their warlike nature and peacefully coexist with the Federation and their rivals the Tholians. The situation gave no space for Ghes's principles as a Starfleet officer. It was instinctive, but it also came from personal experience - he knew the Kasan'thar couldn't possibly be up to any good. However unlike Admiral Cain, he didn't have the militant insensibility to make him look for any excuse to punish them. He needed to look at the file, which in a way made it even more disappointing and infuriating when he found the obvious flaws in their proposed arrangement. Now he was sat in the Starbase 47 conference room with the crews of the Enzio and the Rainier. Cain was chairing the meeting while Jackson interjected to brief them on her plan for the negotiations. Ghes made notes in silence. There was a general awareness among those present that he hadn't spoken yet. But it'd become part of his design to exude an aura of neutrality, especially considering how diametrically opposed Admirals Cain and Jackson were. The two were in constant conflict, verbal and non-verbal. Ghes was keen to remain objective as possible. He'd had his experiences with the Kasan'thar and believed he knew the truth of the matter. "My people are analysing the Kasan'thar's proposed terms," he eventually spoke, bringing the issue of the Kasan'thar's trustworthiness to the fore, for it was surely on their minds, "Talks would begin immediately but I would urge a complete sensor sweep of the system before we arrive." <Tag Jackson/Cain>

Four Years Ago...
The glittering shards of the task force spread themselves out across several light minutes. They reflected the light of the star - a variable G type that even this far out illuminated the cold dust of the outer system. Relative to the Victory the shards barely seemed to be moving, some rotating slightly here and there, catching the light at peculiar angles of incidence and casting it out to the Nebula class starship.
Gheskori brooded as he watched this sight from the ready room. He'd barely had a chance to adapt to command of the Victory-C, having been given the position on a temporary basis only when Colonel Wong had confined himself to the brig. Wong had physically ordered Ghes - his acting XO - to place him under arrest.
What he couldn't see in the deep distance - far beyond the tattered line of Federation starships that burnt their impulse drives furiously to escape the confines of the system - was the intruding Kasan'thar flagship and its attendant vessels. Somewhere in the darkness the fortress of the Kasan'thar flagship was pushing forward, launching long range torpedoes at regular intervals. The warlike non-humanoids had shown little hesitation in crossing the Federation border. It remained to be seen how far they were willing to go.
"Commander Gheskori. Admiral Cain's flagship has jumped to warp," a bridge officer commed.
"Acknowledged. As soon as we reach the jump point follow her at maximum warp." He left the view of the task force elements that trailed behind them and returned to his desk. Cain's flagship - battleworn but otherwise fully operational - had gone to high warp, escaping the system northwards relative to the plane. In the engagement the vessel had stalwartly stood down a Kasan'thar battleship, its Trill first officer dying in the ensuing combat and his symbiont transplanted into the Victory's science officer.
The flagship was not a bad one to follow, Ghes decided, despite its warmongering antics. He wanted to make sure his ship didn't fall behind.
"Lieutenant O'Mannin. What do you make of the Kasan'thar's proposed arrangements for security at the conference?" Ghes asked his officer. He'd originally intended to keep his questions for the Enzio's staff until after the briefing, but something compelled him to speak now. "Is there anything you can see that we could improve?"
<Tag O'Mannin> <Rainier security etc>
He kept one eye on Admiral Jackson, thinking how he could bring her into the exchange. He'd considered questioning her on her plan, but as he hadn't introduced himself yet it somehow felt impolite, plus her sparring with Cain made it difficult to contribute without fear of getting his head snapped off. He needed to get things off on the right foot.

Lorna, Cris, K'Lana and Mari were working out. It seemed to be gang up on the CMO day, not that Lorna was complaining. Firstly because she was quite enjoying herself and secondly because at the moment she was pinned to the mats with Mari across her legs, Cris on her back and K'Lana working to cut off her air supply. Lorna sucked in a breath as deep as she could manage, she was on the verge of tapping out when the computer announced that she needed to report to a briefing in half an hour which would give her time to shower, change and deal with the imminent bruise that was forming on her left cheek bone, Mari was developing quite a punch.
They let her up off the floor with dramatic grudging sighs, she thanked Mari and K'Lana and kissed her wife before flipping her to the floor. She left the three of them laughing in her wake as she headed off to get ready.
Lorna made it to the briefing room with about a minute to spare. She was quite intrigued to see that as well as the Rainer crew there was a scattering of people she didn't know, and one of them was an Admiral that she felt she should recognise, there was also a Commodore present. She settled in one of two empty seats at the far end of the table. This was going to be an interesting meeting, both Admiral Jackson and Captain Cornette seemed tense. Lorna did her best to relax.
The door opened again and a Trill officer walked in she froze for a second staring at the Admiral Lorna didn't recogise and then moved hurriedly to sit in the empty seat next to Lorna.

Tiana had finally got out of sickbay. Her neurochemicals had been been a bit out of balance but that was all fixed now. What actually concerned her was that there had been no underlying cause for the memories to over power her this time. She was contemplating sending a message to Elliane (after the assessment on the orders of the Symbiosis Commission Representative Elliane Ryat had offered her support if Tiana ran into any further problems. She could also contact Thalia Fen her former field docent, but there was no time for that now she had to head to a staff briefing.
She was barely on time for the staff meeting. The door hissed open and Tiana entered she froze. It was hardly the proper reaction for a starfleet officer but it was far better than collapsing which was what her knees threatened to do. Surely someone could have warned her that Admiral Cain was here. Neither Cet or Tiana liked Admiral Cain, back on the Victory she had had Tiana arrested for disobeying orders of course the order had involved reporting for Nawar Cet's duties and that was after having ordered that Tiana become host to the symbiont. Yes, things had worked out but that was hardly Tiana's favourite period of history. Given how her memories had been of late it could even be dangerous, although to her or Cain Tiana wasn't sure.
She wasn't going to collapse, run or launch herself at Admiral Cain; instead she wobbled slightly as she made it to table she dropped in to the nearest vacant seat which was conveniently quite a long way from Admiral Cain. She found herself sitting next to a dark eyed woman with coppery hair who was a commander in either science or medical.

JP between Stacey Jackson and Gheskori
Stacey took a deep breath as she looked around the large table, she closed her eyes for a few moments. "I think we have spent more than enough time discussing the security concerns, I am not indifferent to them and of course we will do everything we can."
She stood up and nodded slowly. "I won't lie to you now, the Federation council is concerned a war with the Kasan'thar could cost up to twenty thousand federation lives, in a full scale war the Kasan would not surrender until their fleet was obliterated and their planets conquered." She shook her head slowly.
"We have been approached by them for peace, are there risks? yes of course, but the risk of not going or letting our paranoia sabotage our efforts are even higher." She took a deep breath. "This mission is going ahead, set whatever security arrangements you need but they will not interfere with the conference."
"Then you'd have us walk into these negotiations with our hands completely tied?" Ghes asked, standing as well. There was a sudden air of tension in the room. It was the first time that the captain of the one vessel had addressed the other. "We'd appear blind to the Kasan'thar, living up to the worst of our perceived reputation as being idealistic fools."
Ghes was surprised to hear these words coming out of his mouth. It was true that he was realistic in his expectations of the Kasan, but he didn't think he was capable of such pragmatic vitriol. He at once respected and despised himself for it.
Jackson turned her head to looked at him her jaw clenched slightly. "Commodore, I would have us walk into those negotiations as the organization founded on the principles of peace, I would have us walk into those negotiations as the same organization that made peace with the Klingons after almost a century of hostilities." Her tone got more tense as she continued. "The Federation was created by over the objections of people who said we were being idealistic fools, every peace agreement ever signed was over the objection of people who said we were being idealistic fools." She looked away. "I am not going to hand them the defence codes to Earth, but we will do everything we reasonably can to ensure peace."
"Regardless of your words, Admiral Jackson, I concur, we shouldn't let our concerns over security interfere too heavily where there is the possibility of actual peace with the Kasan'thar's empire." Ghes returned to his seat, leaving Admiral Cain seething at the table's head.
"I'll make my security chief Lieutenant O'Mannin, and my first officer available to you so we can make the appropriate arrangements. The location being a neutral system, there should be a minimal Kasan'thar military presence: at most, two vessels of battleship displacement and numerous escorts."
"You will make yourself and any of your officers I request available to me Commodore." Stacey replied as she stood up. "We will be departing the station within the hour, everyone is dismissed."
Ghes hovered by the door as the staff of the two vessels filed out of the room. He fell in alongside his first officer. "James, I'd like you to be present on the Rainier when we arrive in system." Commander Matthew paused, interested at what he was hearing. "Just keep an eye on her," Ghes said.

Gheskori was one of the first to return to the Enzio following the conference on Starbase 47. He allowed his crew a bit of time to wind their way back to ship, giving them a chance to absorb all that'd been said in the briefing. On the face of it the Enzio's role was clear, but there was a great deal more beneath the surface that would require some thought. Perhaps on their way back his crew would think about where they stood on the Kasan'thar, and whether or not they thought their offerings of peace were genuine.
Ghes nodded at the face on the screen in his quarters. "Escort and support. That's our role." Someone moved behind him. Ghes realised his second wife had entered, asking if he wanted Tarkalian tea. "Not now, dear," he brushed her away. "Sorry Admiral."
"Escort and support for the Vice Admiral, hmm? And does she think there's anything more to your presence?" Admiral Burke asked.
"Doubtless she does. But our stated role in itself is not too unusual. A vessel as advanced and agile as the Enzio is a perfect fit for tactical support, when engaging in dealings with the Kasan'thar. Even if the negotiations are being held in a neutral system where the Kasan'thar military presence is expected to be minimal, moderate at most."
"And I understand you've been liaising with Admiral Cain..." Burke leant forward, his tone of voice having changed. "What role might she have played in these matters?"
Ghes paused, unsure how much to reveal. "Admiral Cain has expressed to me her... concerns, about the entire negotiation process. She doesn't believe the Kasan are genuine... She's the very reason the Enzio has been attached to this operation."
"I see..." Burke was distracted by something off screen. He sighed, "Apologies, Commodore. Something else has come to my attention. I will contact you when you are a parsec out of Starbase. Burke out."
Ghes sighed, relieved that the Admiral was gone and his face replaced by the familiar Federation seal. This situation was becoming ever more tenuous. He had Admirals coming out of his ears, to borrow a human expression. The foremost issue - and the cause for his uncertainty - was that Cain hadn't specified how much he should be telling Admiral Jackson about his duty to discover the Kasan's true motivations. It made dealing with other members of the admiralty a tricky prospect, as he had no idea who was aware of Cain's designs and who wasn't.
It was time to call a staff briefing. "Commodore Gheskori to all Enzio senior officers on ship and Starbase. Make your way to the conference room."
The staff were gathered thirty minutes later, arrayed around the Enzio's conference table in a configuration much like they'd been at the larger briefing on the Starbase, except with Gheskori at the head of the table.
Gheskori took a deep breath, uncertainty still wracking him, "It's time I told you all explicitly what Admiral Cain has ordered me to do. We've been commanded to subvert the negotiation process with the Kasan'thar. Admiral Cain believes - and I agree with her - that the Kasan cannot be telling the truth about their request for peace. We're to discover their true motivations, and if need be, drive them out of the sector. Admiral Jackson's vision for peaceful coexistence with that species is not to be fulfilled. Is my position understood?"

Tiana bit her lip. She was a Starfleet Officer and that meant she should be following orders but she did not like getting orders from Admiral Cain. The woman has quite clearly shown that she didn't care for others as long as what she wanted happened. What complicated the matter was that Ghes, someone she did trust, agreed with Admiral Cain.
"Sir, can I clarify? Admiral Cain wants us to look in to the situation but she doesn't want us to start anything does she, that is, we aren't going in as the aggressors?"
Tiana paused Ghes knew what her issues were Admiral Patrizia Cain. She hoped that the past wasn't going to cause problems but you could never tell.

"Sir, can I clarify? Admiral Cain wants us to look in to the situation but she doesn't want us to start anything does she, that is, we aren't going in as the aggressors?"
"Sir I have to agree with Commander Galwyn, the last thing you want is to get in between two Admirals with two Different Agenda s as my Flight instructor once said when two Large Warships Are firing at each other you don t want to be the little shuttle caught in both of their firing solutions no matter which ship hit you your just DEAD," Commander Matthew put emphatically.
"Alright, alright," Ghes said, throwing his arms in the air before rapidly reestablishing decorum. "The truth is we are already embroiled in this battle of... wills, if you like, between these two Admirals. My status as a Commodore puts me in the position of having to follow orders from both, but I have been given specific orders by Admiral Cain whose point of view I happen to agree with. We take orders from Cain first; Jackson second. Clear?"
"To answer your question, Tiana, no we're not going in as the aggressors. Our mission on the face of it remains the same: we're not to engage in any overt hostile activity, but we are to investigate passively the Kasan'thar's true objectives in this region. Anything out of the ordinary that may even hint at a disruption to the peace process we are to investigate. And also anything we think might be worth checking out, which might involve surface operations, we don't know.
"Any more questions, concerns?" he asked. Behind him the starfield was starting to wheel, the Enzio making its way towards the final waypoint before its jump to warp - roughly 30 seconds behind the Rainier. "I'd advise you all to think about where you stand regarding our orders. Moral objections I would normally listen to, but I don't think we can expect much in return from the Kasan'thar..." The Enzio's Captain stood from the table, the staff doing the same, "All dismissed."
<Tag All Enzio>
"Status report, Lieutenant Mendez." Ghes requested, entering the bridge.
"We've jumped to warp, sir. The Rainier has taken the lead, locking in course for the designated system."
Ghes nodded and retired from the bridge, Matthew moving into his place in the CO chair. "James, let's hope the Admiral Jackson is accommodating of your presence on her bridge when we reach the system." Matthew glanced up at the Denobulan. "Yep, I haven't told her yet," Ghes said.
* * *
The system chosen for the negotiations lay in neutral territory, close to the borders of the Federation and the Kasan'thar Empire. Several - as far as they knew empty - star systems were dotted about this obscure, unaligned region. The Kasan had already set up the base and infrastructure for the peacetalks on a nondescript M-class planet about a hot B type star and were simply awaiting the Federation delegation's arrival.
The first officer and the tactical/security department were carrying out a tactical analysis of the system as per Gheskori's orders. The position and velocity vector of every Kasan'thar vessel, from battlecruiser, to destroyer, escort and shuttle was to be plotted and updated realtime, so the Rainier and Enzio would be prepared on the drop from warp.
Ghes lowered the PADD and stretched out on his quarters' couch. A human author: Cortazar, his prose taxing at times. Such a style didn't synchronise well with Ghes's current required state of mind. "ETA?" he yawned.
"4 hours, 17 minutes, Commodore," the disembodied bridge officer reported. Ghes collapsed with a sigh on the pillow.

There was a noise from the other room. He leapt up, grabbing a phaser from a recess under the couch. He softpadded his way across his quarters, only to find his second wife jumping out at him from the bedroom. "Oh, it's you. Still here?" Ghes said, irked and frowning. He threw the phaser on the couch. "I thought you were on the holodeck."
"I got back before you finished briefing the crew," she replied simply.
"Are you sure about this?" she asked suddenly, having gone to the portal to the stars. Ghes turned around. "You know deep down that Admiral Cain is... unstable," she said, "Why are you following her orders so blindly?"
"Because," Ghes said, his grip loosening on the PADD of Cortazar he still held, "I've witnessed firsthand what the Kasan can do. I don't approve of Cain's hardline stance but I do approve of this current policy. These negotiations can only spell tragedy for the Federation if the other side is genuine and the process is successful. The Kasan won't back down diplomatically. In peace they will be as ruthless as they are in war."
"Do you really believe that?"
"Yes," Ghes nodded emphatically, sitting back on the couch and studying the PADD. What he wasn't sure he believed was that the Kasan'thar would welcome two Starfleet ships into a neutral system, where their own military presence was moderate. They were either hiding forces as Ghes had first believed, or he had underestimated their capacity for rational thinking.
"Commander Matthew and Lieutenant O'Mannin," he said tapping his commbadge. "Progress on studying the neutral system ahead? The extent of the Kasan'thar presence."
<Tag Matthew / O'Mannin>
He got the urge to order the rest of his staff, suddenly paranoid that sufficient preparations weren't being carried out. "We wouldn't want to displease the Admiral, would we?" he said, shifting PADDs about the coffee table.
"Which one?" his wife asked.
He sat in apparent contemplation before again opening a channel on his commbadge. One of those Admiral's had a possible personal concern in this matter. "Commander Galwyn Cet, could you report to Dr Saryn for a check up," he cut the channel before Tiana could ask why - not that one questioned one's Captain on a frequent basis. Perhaps it was irrational, perhaps it was paranoia clutching at him, but he began to wonder about the extent to which Admiral Cain had her claws in this whole affair.

Lorna found herself back in sickbay dealing with a broken arm, 4 year old who wanted to be a Elysian and had jumped off the op bunk to try to 'fly'. No doubt that little girl would be learning about gravity in detail in the coming days.
Once more into the breach. Peace was a powerful and fragile thing of value to all and yet so hard to obtain. Lorna had seen more of war than most and yet she could still hope for peace. The staff briefing had been an interesting occasion. It was alway nice to meet new people and she wished she had had a chance to introduce herself to her opposite number from the Enzio but there hadn't really been an opportunity.
The interplay between the Admirals was intriguing quite clearly Hawk and Dove. That would make things interesting.
The offer of medical supplies to Kasan'thar meant that she and her staff were going to be very busy as someone would have to show them how to use those supplies. Picking what would be useful would be quite interesting. They were related to the Tholians but the Tholians themselves were quite an enigma. Lorna had only every met one Tholian and that had been the best part of 15 years ago. They physiology was very interesting and they did not register to telepathy although quite what part of their neurology was responsible for that no one was sure. On that one encounter Lorna had been surprised to find that her mind sense did register Tholians. Oh it was faint but it had been there. Looking at a psi-null race like a Ferengi was like a gap in space, if you knew what you were sensing you could count them but there was no indication of life or activity. The Tholians on the other hand 'felt' more like a psi-positive race not that she had sensed anything from 'him' but his mind had definitely been active and present.

(@tiana: apologies for the lots of tagging...feel free to just quote my post when you reply... the idea was given to me by Ghes..)
Savin washed his hands after pulling off the surgical gown then looked up at his father who was going through the same process. "Well done Savin," the older Vulcan stated calmly, though not without pride, "your first surgery was a success." Saryn turned as he heard something then gestured towards his son. "Go see who that is, I will wait for you in the office for your post-op debriefing."
Savin nodded and walked back into main sickbay, still drying off his hands. "Tiana," he exclaimed in surprise, "what brings you to sickbay?"
(Tiana)
The young Vulcan nodded as she talked. "I remember when you were arrested for something that a prior host of Cet was accused of," he answered, "but you were cleared from that crime, were you not? Also...were present hosts not unaccountable for something a past host did?"
(Tiana) (assuming that she carries on to tell him about why she is truly here and what's up with Cet.)
Savin frowned for a moment, then took her arm and led her to a biobed. "What we could do, is take thorough scans of you and of Cet and compare them with prior scans. Also I will take note of your current isoboramine levels, and again compare them with prior readings which should be in your medical file." He paused as he started the scans. "IF you wish...I could initiate a mind meld with you, and see if we can uncover anything this way? Old memories, things Cet did share with you but which you have no conscious memory of?"

"Commander Galwyn Cet, could you report to Dr Saryn for a check up,"
Tiana blinked she had been released from sickbay just in time to make her late for the meeting she had been okay then. She would do as ordered although she wondered if something had changed, Maybe the Captain was worried about her.
She walked down to sickbay and waited.
Savin nodded and walked back into main sickbay, still drying off his hands. "Tiana," he exclaimed in surprise, "what brings you to sickbay?"
"Well, Cet and I had been having some issues prior to this mission and Admiral Cain's presence has not made either of us any happier."
The young Vulcan nodded as she talked. "I remember when you were arrested for something that a prior host of Cet was accused of," he answered, "but you were cleared from that crime, were you not? Also...were present hosts not unaccountable for something a past host did?"
Tiana sighed she didn't really want to go over the only blot on her recordbut she knew she had no choice. "I was technically taken in to custody for mutiny after refusing a direct order from Admiral Cain. She ordered me to report for Nawar Cet's duties. I was released and all charges were dropped after the Admiral was herself arrested. It never got to court martial so I was never cleared."
She pinched the bridge of her nose legal precedents relating to Trill were not exactly her forte. "Legally speaking the current host of a Trill symbiont is considered a separate person from a past host. Although on occasions things have become a little more blurred."
She wondered if perhaps the Captain was taking greater care of her than she had first though. "The CO ordered me down here for a check up. When I was dealing with the Admiral before I had just been joined, her orders, my decision. And I believed there was a bit of debate on who exactly was running the show when I refused that order." She sighed realising that she was being a little cryptic.
"It's rare but particularly after trauma or a new joining the host's personality can be overwhelmed by one or more of the sets of memories within the symbiont. I am pretty sure that we all thought the Admiral's order was wrong. More recently I have had the odd flash of memory from Cet. I believe that the Commodore is concerned about my possible reaction to Admiral Cain. And to be honest I'm concerned too. The strength of my reaction today was more than I would have expected even under the circumstances."
Tiana knew she was being careless with her pronouns but the nuances in her native tongue for discussing joining simply not translate into standard despite many people's efforts.
Tiana dutifully sat on the biobed and swung her legs up. "Cet certainly remembers many things about the Admiral. Nawar was a Security Officer under her and later her FO." She made a slight choking sound and shivered. "He also partially blames the Admiral for his death." She drew a deep slow breath as she smothered the memory of trying to breath vacuum. None of Cet's previous hosts had thought very much of Tiana at the start but they had worked things out and now got on rather well but she still got the feeling that they were trying to protect her. Given some of the things they had seen and had happened to them she was mostly okay with that.
"I'm pretty sure that there is more there but I don't know the best way of getting to it." Then another thought struck her. "Do mind melds even work with joined Trill? We have two separate centres of memory and I've never heard of it being done."
Tag: Saryn, OOC: thank you for the poke. I hope all that makes sense.

"I do not know," Savin admitted truthfully, sitting down beside her on the bed. "Are you not one single consciousness now?" The tricorder still lay open beside him, beeping softly at a continious pattern, occasionally changing pitch but not to alarming levels.
"I cannot find anything out of the ordinary," he added, after consulting the readings, "your isoboramine levels are at normal levels. Other than some anxiety, you are in perfect health."
Almost shyly, he reached for her hand, covering hers with his, marveling at the coolness of her skin as their palms touched. "I have no doubt that all will turn out well for you," he continued, holding her gaze. "I wish to help you Tiana, and if this is how I can do so, I will gladly attempt this for you." The young Vulcan raised his left hand, fingers spread. "If you will permit me?"
(ooc: Savin actually visited her in the brig remember? He got quite the crush on Tiana if you can recall...still does. He'll go a fair way for her, maybe even break some rules. If she says yes to the meld you'll have to tell me what he sees/hears etc)

"But, sir... Admiral, the Rainier has already departed. She is some four parsecs out of Starbase. This would be an unprecedented disruption to a campaign already in progre-"
The steel in Cain's eyes told the lieutenant all that he need know about what she thought of him. "I'm not interested in the logistics of the task, Lieutenant, I just want you to get me on the USS Rainier. A shuttlecraft capable of high warp, a starship, a freighter, anything. I want you to get me on that ship's bridge, before our Admiral Jackson totally disintegrates these 'peace talks'."
"Aye, sir," the lieutenant said, hurrying off to read the docking bay register to see which ships were available. At this point, he was ready to pull in the first vessel he looked upon.
His sweaty fingers slipped over the console, "The Defiant class Venerable should be able to service your requirements, Admiral."
She nodded curtly and stepped towards the Starbase Ops turbolift. She disliked residing in these places too long. Administrative centres, needless bureaucracy. She turned to her primary aide, "I'll let you worry about the paperwork, or whatever it is you do. Next you hear from me, I'll be on the bridge of the Rainier."
The Venerable sped at high warp to intersect the two larger vessels' trajectory, its final approach becoming almost perpendicular. The Sovereign class Rainier was some 20 million kilometres ahead of the Enzio, leading the way to the system. They would arrive in just under half a solar day.
"Rainier is responding, sir. She's preparing to drop out of warp as ordered."
Cain regarded the Venerable's commanding officer, "We can brook no delay. I'll be in the transporter room." She'd brought minimal possessions, a simple duffel bag carried by the two security officers she'd brought with her and a mysterious silver case, elongated, long enough to hold a phaser rifle. "Good day, Captain," she said to the Venerable's CO as the turbolift doors slid closed.
Most of the Rainier's crew were still at a loss as to what was going on. =^=Captain Cornette, this is Admiral Cain. I will expect a welcoming party in your transporter room in under one minute. As soon as I and my aides are aboard, get your ship back into warp en route to the designated system. The sooner we get to these negotiations the better.=^= She had been careful to subtly emphasise the word 'negotiations'.

The Enzio had dropped out of warp, too, shortly after the Rainier. The crew were just as bemused at the sudden appearance of the Defiant class USS Venerable. Commodore Gheskori had the Enzio kept at a distance of several million kilometres, his curiosity piqued as Lieutenant O'Mannin registered a transporter beam being directed from the Venerable to the Rainier. It wasn't long before they learned that it was Rear Admiral Cain herself that had beamed aboard the Rainier.
Ghes took leave to his ready room without a word. Commander Matthew, at first shrugging at the bridge staff, followed him. "What is this, is she trying to take over our assignment?" he asked.
Gheskori stood with his back to his XO at the portal, observing the stars, "If it matters that much to her..."
"If she's directing the action from the Rainier, where does that leave Admiral Jackson? Her hopes for peaceful settlement?"
Gheskori took his desk. "If she intends to use the Rainier as a battleaxe to subdue the Kasan'thar, then she really must think their peace offerings aren't genuine, and that there's more to this than Admiral Jackson believes. The question we should ask ourselves now is what role are we supposed to play in this matter. Is Cain going to observe the negotiations? Is our own mission still of value? Commander, something tells me we'll find ourselves diverted from the peace talks soon enough, after arrival."

10 hours later...
The Enzio dropped out of warp some three minutes behind the Rainier, Ghes finding much to his dismay that the Sovereign class vessel had already set a course - on a direct heading - for the planet on which the negotiations were to take place.
The Enzio was here - at least officially - to escort the larger vessel to the conference and provide protection, as well as to give a show of strength from the Federation. But the Rainier had pulled clear - while both ships were still at warp - progressing at incrementally increasing warp factors, forcing Ghes to ramp up the Enzio's speed several times to maintain distance. They had failed. The Rainier arrived well ahead of them. The Captain of the Enzio wondered who was giving the orders on Admiral Jackson's vessel.
He had the helmsman make all due speed to catch up with and even overtake the Rainier, so that the flagship might be 'protected' when they entered orbit. He also asked his first officer and tactical officer to make another assessment on the two Kasan'thar battlecruisers that were holding station further out in the system. Ten minutes later the Rainier and Enzio took up orbit of the negotiations planet. They'd made their move - their opening gambit, as Ghes viewed it - now they had to await the response from the Kasan'thar stationed on the surface.
What was taking them so long? Four hours went by and neither vessel received any acknowledgement of their presence. Both ships were on guard. Ghes even considered raising shields and calling for general quarters. He watched the planet below, from the portal next to his ready room table. The blackness beyond permeated the room as if it were something tangible, and the silence lay thicker than blood.
Finally there was an alert from his terminal. He accessed it. The Rainier, likewise having kept a silent vigil, was contacting him. An Admiral and a Captain faced him on the screen, with another senior figure looming in the background.
"Admiral Jackson, Captain Cornette..." Ghes nodded. They held conference, discussing the apparent absence of Kasan'thar activity. Both confirmed that they were reading lifesigns on the surface, and that the Kasan'thar warships in the outer system were apparently operational. "I'm willing to take the Enzio to intercept their battlecruisers. If we can't get answers here, then I'd rather confront the Kasan'thar and get them quickly." He gauged Cain's reaction, she who stood in the background, but who remained unreadable.
