Lorna was back on duty she still had a few aches from the Hen Party yesterday but generally all was good. She hadn't laughed so much in a long time. She had learned a lot about the other women present, it had been nice to meet them outside of their respective duties.
Sickbay was actually pretty quiet, Lorna looked up when the doors hissed open. An officer in red wearing a C1C's pips walked in. She had seen him at the combined staff meeting but she did not know any of the Enzio's officers were on the Rainer, which was actually a bit of a problem. If there was a personnel transfer, even a temporary one, she should have been informed.
She approached the newcomer. "Hi Doc my name is Commander James T Matthew the Executive on board the ENZIO on temporary Assignment on board the Rainer. Look Doc I have this green & purple looking fungus growing on my right foot do you think I should be worried about it?" Lorna didn't really like being called Doc, it usually meant that people weren't taking her seriously. She immediately started to mentally run through the possibly diagnoses, there were several. She had a strong suspicion it was a wind-up but she was a Starfleet Doctor, she had seen a lot of very strange things; it wouldn't do to presume. Commander Matthew continued his statement. "just joking Doc"
"I need a Quick Physical Command Regs Stats I need one done normally I would have Doctor Saryn on board the ENZIO do it But I need Assigned to the Rainer the next Couple weeks to come so I felt I would just come down here and get done if you Have the free time."
The initial introduction suggested that Lorna and Commander Matthew might never see eye to eye; however, that he had come to sickbay for a physical voluntarily, and as she observed when she pulled up his file, on time; was a definitely point in his favour.
"I'm Lorna Holsen, the Rainer's CMO and I certainly have time." Lorna escorted him over to a biobed. "If you'll just make yourself comfortable." He settled on the biobed. "Have you had any health issues since your last physical?"

"Gheskori be aware very little happens on this ship I am unaware of, rest assured there will be no circumstances in which your Commander here will be taking command of this ship, I also see you attempted to contact Cain no doubt to inform her of something, need I remind you that I am the ranking officer, you will brief me what you ship is doing out there."
A low sigh escaped Ghes's lips as Jackson's face filled up the viewscreen, forcing Matthew's to the side. Not what he needed, or indeed had expected. Matthew was using a rear console of the Rainier's bridge; as such Ghes's face must appear as a tiny one inch by one inch image in the Rainier console's viewer.
"I meant no offence, Admiral," Ghes folded his arms, the small image from the Rainier bridge seeming pathetic. "I was merely asking for an update from my officer. Admiral. I was under the impression you had headed to the surface with Captain Cornette. Are you sure you can place your trust in her negotiation skills? This is your operation after all..."
<Tag Jackson / Matthew>
Ghes brooded mentally, wondering how he could put this to elicit the desired response from Jackson and avoid incurring Cain's wrath. He sat in the command chair. "Seeing as you and Admiral Cain are present, sir, I'll make my report to both of you... My crew has detected a small ship in system, we believe a civilian merchant, heading towards the border with the Kasan'thar. It will reach the Enzio in approximately 30 minutes. Concurrent with its appearance, the 2 Kasan'thar cruisers backed off and went to battlestations. All 3 ships have failed to respond to recent hails." Ghes evaluted the Admirals' expressions, particularly Cain's... "Needless to say this is suspicious behaviour, sirs. Should I impound the vessel? It is a potential threat to the ongoing peace process."
<Tag Jackson / Cain>
Ghes remained motionless upon closing the channel. Then he sat up and sighed, seeming happy. "Will, I'd like you to ensure we have full engine power, both warp and impulse available, if we need to return to the planet." He nodded at his Second Officer, letting Will decide whether he could best achieve that from the bridge or engineering.
<Tag Walters>
Despite his sudden ease, Ghes was actually getting a strange sensation. It was old, familiar... A perceived finality; finality he hadn't felt since... Since the days in the task force with Cain commanding on the Montgomery, their fleet facing down the might of the Kasan'thar armada, on the brink of total war.

The USS Chivalry sailed through space on its route to the Enzio, Commander Daya's new assignment. He had nodded off along the way, his arms crossed in an attempt to keep his head from sliding one way or the other. "Commander, we are approaching the Enzio, hailing them now" Daya's eyes opened as he turned his head and nodded in acknowledgement, "Thank you Lieutenant, you guys can leave once you are ready." With his bag in hand, Daya stood in the shuttle bay of the USS Enzio taking in the surroundings. Dropping his bag off he waved to the pilots and pressed his comm badge =^= Commander Daya to Commodore Gheskori =^=

With a slight chuckle in his voice the commander responded =^= I'm glad to come aboard at such an interesting time, where would you like me to meet with you?=^=

He deflected her implication, making Jackson all the more sure Cain was whispering in his ear although she got the sense he was trying his best to remain squarely on the fence. Stacey's face grew stern as Gheskori questioned Cornettes abilities. "I wouldn't have sent her if I didn't believe she could handle it, I have complete faith in her abilities." She took a deep breath. "Once she has laid the ground work I will go down and see if an agreement can be reached."
Stacey listened intently as he gave the report on the small unidentified vessel, his suggestion to impound it caused her to shake her head. "We have no jurisdiction here, this is Kasan'thar space their law applies they will deal with unwanted guests in whatever manner they see fit." She took a deep breath and thought for a moment. "Send the unidentified vessel a final message, warning them to turn around make it clear that if they are Federation citizens they are outside Federation space and ordered to turn around." She shrugged. "Then back off one hundred kilometres and do not interfere be prepared to get out of there, more than likely it is a Tholian scout ships spying and we don't need to get in the middle of that particular tug of war."
She looked to Cain ho simply nodded in surprising agreement. Cain did however add. "Cease all attempts to make contact with the Kasan'thar battle ships, we don't need to appearance of sending mixed messages all communication with the Kasan'thar will be handled from here."
Jackson felt uneasy about Cain agreeing with her as if somehow that proved she was making an error but she shrugged it off. She looked back at Ghesoris small image. "The USS Chivalry is cleared by the Kasan'thar to drop off a new crewmember to you, once they have remind them to get out of this region of space at maximum warp in line with the agreement." She nodded and added. "Rainier out."
Stacey took a long deep breath as she walked to the centre of the bridge and took a seat, Cain simply walked into the turbolift and was gone.

Paikea's return to the USS Rainier was anything but noteworthy. Paikea had been forced to deal with some unpleasant family matters and it had taken a lot longer than planned. The words said to him by his father still hurt and deep down Pai knew that it would be years before he once again saw his father or mother again. As Pai contemplated on these sad thoughts, he couldn't help but think about the positives in his life. His career, friends, and his love, Katie Anderson. The Rainier held these things and he wished the Chivalry would arrive sooner rather than later.
"Commander, we'll be arriving at the coordinates within the hour, the captain would like to thank you personally for your help while you were with us, but he has to deal with the weapons test," Commander Vickers explained," from our initial reports it seems that the Rainier is in joint mission with the USS Enzio. They are performing preliminary talks with the Kasan'thar."
"That will be the day, the Kasan hate the Tholians and we are barely holding our end of the treaty with the Tholians. We just got out of a war with them, why would we want to alienate them again?" Pai asked clearly skeptical that they would be doing something productive.
"I don't know Commander, but I would recommend that you get familiar with the Kasan'thar, their biology while like the Tholians is also different," Vickers said before she excused herself and let Paikea get his things ready. Pai being who he was had never unpacked his bags while on the Chivalry, so he began to work on a few things, specifically knowing everything that Starfleet knew about the Kasan'thar and their technology.
An hour later
The shimmering lights of the transporter let Paikea know that he was back home. He was ecstatic to see Katie waiting for him and quickly hugged and kissed his fiancé. He wanted to spend more time with Katie, but it was imperative that Paikea speak to the Vice Admiral and get back to work. The Kasan'thar were an extremely impatient race and it wasn't smart to get them mad this early in the process.
"Sorry Katie, but I got to get to the bridge," Pai said as he dismissed himself from Katie and headed towards the lift. The lift doors opened and the last person he ever expected to see was inside, "Hello Admiral, it has been a very long time ma'am." The look of surprise obviously took the Admiral by surprise, but Paikea could not have forgotten Patrizia Cain. She was a bonafide firebrand, who wasn't afraid of getting down and dirty. Personally Paikea appreciated her toughness, but he clearly recognize that the admiral preferred fighting a lot more than peace and tranquility.
"I was a member of the taskforce you lead while you were on the Montgomery, ma'am," Paikea said," I'm surprised you would be here for this particular mission. From what I understand and pardon my boldness, but you don't give a damn about the Kasan'thar. They have proven to be unreliable and are dangerous to the Federation."

OFF: JP with Patrizia Cain and Stacey Jackson
ON: The turbolift halted and she found herself looking at a Commander he didn't stand aside rather he began recall their previous encounter and voice his opinions on the Kasan'thar. "I do not remember you." She stated flatly before adding. "In regards to the Kasan'thar Admiral Jackson disagrees and she is the ranking officer." She brushed past him. "For the moment." As she walked away she added. "You should report to your Commanding Officer not waste time walking down memory lane."
(Tag Pai)
she heard the request from the Rainiers counsellor, her first reaction was to ignore it she was after all an Admiral she didn't make a habit of heeding the requests of her subordinates esspecially ones who weren't actually Starfleet Officers. However the possibility remained he was calling to provide some information perhaps even something she could use against Jackson, and kill this negotiation before Starfleet gave too much ground.
She entered the Counsellors office and she locked her eyes on the man every bit as unimpressive as she had assumed he would be. "This had better be important." She stated flatly.
"My, aren't we friendliness itself," Nathan shot back, returning her look of disinterest. He already disliked and distrusted the woman, and her attitude only strengthened the feeling. "I think down right meeting with the kasan'thar is crazy, and no less dangerous. But..." He held out a PADD to her. "I received this from my sister, she thought it may be of use to you."
she rolled her eyes at his retort, "Don't tell me your concerns, tell Jackson this is her mess.". She took the padd and looked down at it quickly reading its contents, Mostly medical information or conjecture based on their similarity to Tholians. "Reckus is your sister? my isn't this ship just fit to bursting with the best and brightest." She said her voice dripping with sarcasm.
She looked up from the padd and shrugged slightly. "This information could have been sent to me, there was no need for me to collect it personally." She glared at him. "Unless there was something more?"
"When was your last psychological evaluation?" Nathan didn't so much as even smile, crossing his arms over his chest as he stared at her. "And yes, Admiral Reckus is my sister."
She shrugged slightly. "Not something I would choose to brag about were I you." She looked at him for a long moment. "Eight months and three weeks ago." She eventually replied. "I'm not required to undergo another for three months.." She took a deep breath. "If you think your the first counsellor to try and use this tactic you are sadly mistaken, far more skilled have tried and failed." She waved a hand.
"If your intent is to insult my skill as a counselor, you fail, admiral. However, are you also aware that I have practiced medicine for nearly two decades?" Nathan shrugged indifferently. "I am not attempting to offer counsel, I am saying you <i>are</i> crazy."
"An insult would suggest I care how you feel one way or the other, I don't I was stating a fact." She returned the slight shrug. "Your use of the word crazy only proves my point, surely someone with skill would apply a specific diagnosis not use childish generalizations." She shook her head slowly. "That all your 'two decades' of practice has taught you." She sighed. "Pathetic."
"So you think. But I believe Admiral Jackson will disagree with that assessment. I know about your leading your poor former executive on. He was blindly in love with you, and blindly followed you and it got him killed. How many others will you use, and lead to their deaths? You say you don't care...and that's exactly it. Your lack of caring, your lack of facing consequences. You love nothing and no-one but yourself, and that's the whole problem."
Had Jackson not used that same thing against her minutes before she would have reacted differently. She took a deep breath and thought for a moment. "Starfleet isn't a social club Doctor, the people who join it are well aware of the risks." She looked around his office for a moment. "Do you really think Starfleet is unaware of how I conduct myself? they send me on missions exactly for that reason I go so they can have me make the decisions nobody else wants to."
She looked back at him. "I wouldn't count to heavily on your Admiral Jackson to back this play of yours, she may walk around as if the sun shines only for her but when push comes to shove she'll let you take the fall, just ask that pet Captain of hers."
Nathan's eyes narrowed. "She doesn't have to back me, all I need is the CMO to back me and I'm sure she'll do so. Perhaps even the CMO on the Enzio, and of course...Miss Cet. Oh, I read about her."
She almost smiled. "Your starting to bore me, it will take me less than three minutes to have your decision reversed, and then I would simply have gained more proof Jackson can't control her own people never mind an entire negotiation." She shook her head as she threw the padd on his desk and turned around. "I'm the best tactician in Starfleet you really think I didn't anticipate and plan for this?" She paused a moment. "Good day Civilian." She left his office.
Nathan stared after her, then made a few notations on his PADD. "Nathan to Admiral Jackson, have you got a moment?"
She stood up and walked into her ready room sensing the coming conversation would not be appropriate for the ears of the bridge crew. "A moment is about all I have Doctor, what can I do for you." Came the reply from Jackson.
"It concerns Admiral Cain ma'am. I think she's nuts."
There was a long pause before Jackson finally replied. "Doctor, I dislike the that woman with every fibre of my being however I also can not deny she is regarded my a great many as a hero, she personally led actions that liberated entire planets from hostile occupation, she wields a great deal of support." Another pause. "There are delegations in the federation council that would if she asked change their homeworlds name to Cain World."
"She is protected Doctor and any recommendation you or I make would be ignored, Unless of course you found her running down the hallways stark naked and foaming at the mouth while she screamed claims of being Queen of the pixies because that is the sort of event it will take."
"I'm sure I could make that happen admiral," Nathan answered sourly, "but I'm of the firm belief that her presence in this mission will put us all in grave danger, and that she'll stop at nothing, and no-one to get what she wants. She's dangerous."
"Remind me not to get on your bad side Doctor." Stacey replied softly. She took a deep breath and sighed heavily enough for it to be heard over the channel. "I know what she is like Doctor, please trust me I have taken every precaution I can, I have called in every last favour I had, all the pieces are in place." A pause and then she added. "She underestimates me that is my only advantage right now."
"Oh she does indeed. But I'm on your side admiral, so you don't have to worry. But I'm ready, in case you need me."
Jackson paused for a moment. "Thank you Doctor, I will let you know, Jackson out."
Nathan sighed to himself and closed the connection, shaking his head. Trouble was afoot, he could feel it in his bones.

Cain did however add. "Cease all attempts to make contact with the Kasan'thar battle ships, we don't need the appearance of sending mixed messages, all communication with the Kasan'thar will be handled from here."
So she squeezes me out further, Ghes thought, growing increasingly bitter. Whatever true motives Cain may or may not have were being clouded by Ghes's frustration at being sidelined. This vociferous Rear Admiral, who had given him the assignment to find out what the Kasan'thar were up to, was doing her best to force him out of the mission.
He understood that Cain wouldn't want contact with the Kasan'thar, given her and Ghes's mutual distrust of them as well as her and Ghes's subversive mission. But surely right now they needed to establish some kind of dialogue, if only to ascertain that the civilian merchant had nothing to do with the Kasan. And as for Jackson's thought that the merchant was a Tholian scout... Well her orders to back off and leave it well alone made even less sense. Was he, a Captain of an upgraded Prometheus class starship, simply to let a Tholian aggressor - sworn enemy of the Kasan'thar - glide by without a fight? How would that aid the peace process?
=^= Commander Daya to Commodore Gheskori =^=
Ghes sighed, draining the frustration just as it'd threatened to overwhelm him, =/\=Impeccable timing, Commander. You've caught us at one of our quiet periods, fortunately. We are currently aiding a peace process by facing down two enemy cruisers, while caught within the machinations of two faux-idealist Admirals. In short, we are 'up to our necks in it'.=/\=
Ghes heard Commander Daya's laugh. =^= I'm glad to come aboard at such an interesting time, where would you like me to meet with you?=^=
"The USS Chivalry is cleared by the Kasan'thar to drop off a new crewmember to you, once they have remind them to get out of this region of space at maximum warp in line with the agreement." Jackson nodded and added. "Rainier out."
Jackson had cut in and closed the channel before Ghes had a chance to respond. "Commander Daya preempted you, Admiral," Ghes murmured. =/\=Commander Daya, please report to the bridge. You may take up the Ops console immediately unless you wish to shadow the Assistant Operations Chief for a while. After that you may settle in your quarters. But right now considering the current crisis I need all my best people around me.=/\=
<Tag Daya>
"Sir," tactical collared him before he'd made it back down to the command seat. "The civilian merchant is applying lateral thrust. They're adjusting their heading... Towards the planet!"
Ghes's eyes widened. He took the command seat and leant forward, "Plot a tactical schematic of the system on the viewer." A gridlined plan view of the system materialised. The Enzio in its wide elliptical orbit accompanied by the battlecruisers, with a small speck crawling between them, the merchant ship (surrounded by graphics outlining systems status and indications that its impulse engine was at full power).
After further fruitless attempts at communication, Ghes consoled himself with simply waiting until the civilan craft was upon them. "How long until we intersect with it?" he asked, just as Daya arrived on the bridge.
"Fifteen minutes, sir. They're set to bypass us by some hundred thousand kilometres."
And Jackson wants me to stand off and let them by... he thought. No longer the passive maybe-Tholian scout. This craft was on an intercept course with the planet upon which Cornette was negotiating a Kasan'thar peace treaty! "Hail the Rainier. Perhaps they'll change their mind about the merchant vessel once I give them the news. The channel opened; this time he had a full view of the front of the Rainier's bridge. "Admiral Jackson," he nodded, slightly surprised to see Cain was not present, "The civilian ship has altered course for the planet and accelerated to maximum impulse. Maybe you'd like to review your orders?"
<Tag Jackson>
"Commander Daya. Welcome to the bridge..." Ghes said, trying not to sigh with mental exhaustion, "Make yourself at home at Ops and scan that civilian ship. Notify me of any sudden changes and liaise with CTSO O'Mannin. I'm afraid we don't have the luxury of giving you a proper welcome right now but one will come. A drink later maybe, if we can get through this unscathed."

Daya could tell by the sound of his CO's voice that he should hurry to the bridge, something was definitely going on. Walking as quickly as he could, it took him about 5 minutes to arrive and he settled in at his station, pausing momentarily to glance at the tactical station. Taking his sit he punched in his codes and turned when he heard his name called.
"Aye sir" He replied turning his attention back to his console. With his fingers running over his station he attempted to scan the ship, and being unable to he tried again. "That's odd" He said softly, as he continued to try and scan the ship. 'Maybe if i recalibrate the sensors, it has been awhile since i was at this kinda on console' he thought as he ran a systems check on his station. "Uh... Captain. You know that civilian ship? Well, i can't seem to scan it....at all." Suddenly his console was surrounded by officers, each one trying to see what he was talking about. "It would appear, the ships shields are preventing me from getting an accurate scan on in sir"

Daya's report was perplexing. No ship could be utterly impervious to scans - not even cloaked ones - otherwise the conclusion would be that it didn't exist. This one quite obviously did - its engine was leaving a clear signature on surrounding space. Ghes sat heavily in the command chair, confounded by this news until something occurred to him.
He'd heard rumours of an experimental shield system that also acted as a scan dispersion field, under development by Starfleet. He'd last seen it mentioned in official reports perhaps a year ago. He couldn't recall having seen it since then, although he supposed it was possible it'd escaped his eye.
Now he realised he'd never questioned why it had disappeared. He was sure he hadn't imagined it, as he had probably imagined the knocking coming from the ready room closet. Perhaps the shield design had fallen out of favour with the Federation's report agencies, ceasing to be news of interest as there had been no further developments with it. More likely though, Ghes surmised, information on it had been made classified. News of these low profile R&D projects was often published in minor articles that Ghes continued to read - partly because of his science background - until they were identified by structures like Starfleet Command or Intelligence as having potential quadrant-wide importance etc.
"Commander Daya, confirm that we can still read the ship's engine signature."
"Confirmed, sir," Daya said after a moment.
"Then this is no sensor glitch. Analyse the signature and compare with known Starfleet engine designs." Gheskori stood from the command chair and headed below-deck, leaving no officer time enough to question him.
<Tag Daya>
Ten minutes later, while Ghes was reading through ten month old R&D reports like a man possessed, the tangible vigil of silence in his quarters was disrupted by an alert from the bridge. =/\=Commodore... The unidentified ship is passing us at a distance of two hundred thousand kilometres. It maintains its course for the planet, sir.=/\=
Ghes lifted his eyes from his computer terminal, a wild stare fixing on an unremarkable point on his closet door. The knocking... it was present again. He ignored it and addressed the bridge, asking if there had been any new orders from Admiral Jackson. =/\=Negative, sir.=/\=
=/\=Contact the Admiral, giving the comm highest priority. Ask if contact has been made with the Kasan'thar.=/\= If the Enzio crew could determine that, options might open up regarding this mysterious vessel.
<Tag Rainier - & Jackson, Cornette>
Ghes was still finding it hard to believe that Jackson - so determined not to disrupt the peace talks in their early stages - was willing to let this masked ship pass by without a fight or even a challenge. The clamorous knocking grew in its insistency... Previously it was in his ready room; now in his quarters. So that was it. He was going insane, or his mind was at least capitulating under the stress. Who had assessed him before? The CMO or his son... Yes, it was the latter. "Savin... This is Gheskori. Report to my quarters immediately."

Ensign Mallory was the first to pass word down to the science lab about the unscannable ship and the general chaos that it's presence had created. Tiana was a little put out with such a find surely Ghes could have notified her, but then he was acting a little be strangely, hardly surprising under the circumstances she supposed. She set a team analysing what sensor data there was and then went up to the bridge herself. Ghes wasn't there. Tiana wasn't sure how she felt about that. Instead there was a human male in gold with commander's pips that she didn't recognise. The Enzio had been short a COO for a while so maybe they had finally got one. It was really strange that she was so far out of the loop though. She walked over to him and offered a hand.
"I'm Tiana Galwyn the Enzio's CScO, pleased to meet you. I heard an unscannable ship had been found and thought I would come and offer another brain to throw ideas into the pot."

She looked past him at the display. It must have updated at least once while she was en route from the main lab. "So what have got so far?"

JP between Savin (Saryn) and Gheskori
Alerted by a nurse, Savin headed for the CO's quarters without hesitation. He used his medical override to get inside; he reasoned since he wouldn't hear the captain call if he pressed the chime, and the man had said 'immediately', it was better to use it. "Captain..." He started, looking around for a few seconds before settling his attention on the Denobulan. "Are you all right?"
By the time Savin reached the CO's quarters Gheskori was sprawling in near agony over his desk. Hands clasped to his ears, he groaned as he tried to keep the sound out. It was getting to the point where he might consider anything to halt that incessant knocking, growing with every perceptible pulse, and give himself some peace again. How one took the discreet whisperings of the mind for granted...
"Savin. The knocking... has become unbearable," he said steadily as he could, standing and attempting to compose himself before the junior vulcan. "Scan me, submit to sickbay, do anything you think you must do."
The young Vulcan nodded as he studied his captain, concern creasing his brow as he activated his tricorder. "How frequent are you hearing it?" he asked, "have you tried timing it..." He groped for a comparison, blushing slightly when he spoke again, "like a woman may time her contractions when she is in labor?"
The sound abated as Savin began speaking to him. Perhaps it was because his attention had become focussed on the vulcan, distracting him from the persistent knocking. With the increasing quiet, he was given time to form rational thougt. "It began in the ready room... The other time I heard it was, briefly, in the mess hall, then consistently - and with increasing volume - in the ready room again. Now it has moved to my quarters. The one constant..." he wracked his brains, "Seems to be the constant presence of a closet from which the sound used to seem to come from. Now it's only in my head. And the closets are empty."
He took Savin to his quarters' main closet, opening it with a gentle click and showing him the empty interior space within. "This is where the sound in my quarters originated. Now there's no frequency; whenever I'm in my quarters or the ready room, the sound is permanent."
"Did it stop when I entered the room?" Savin asked curiously, as he studied the empty closet. "Are you certain, absolutely certain that the closet is empty? There are no temporal distortions of any kind nearby, that could somehow....quench possible readings?" He looked down at his tricorder for a few seconds, before looking back up. "I am reading nothing, and I do not sense anything either."
"There's nothing in there. Look." Ghes pointed, giving a rare example of Denobulan exasperation. He thought about Savin's previous question... "Yes... They did stop, almost." Now that he considered it, the noises had quietened considerably - not ceased altogether - but had lessened a lot upon Savin's entrance. It was as if there had been a thousand voices, concealed in the corners of Ghes's quarters, that immediately hushed when the vulcan had stepped in.
"I know it's a medical tricorder," he said, positioning himself between Savin and the closet so the vulcan could see and hear him, "But try recalibrating to detect trionic wavelengths..." it was a pure hunch, "Then scan the closet again. Repeat the same with the one in the ready room."
Savin held out the tricorder towards Gheskori. "I do not know how to do that," he admitted as he rested his hand on one of the shelves. He gasped audibly as he yanked his hand back as if burned. Eyes wide, he stared into the closet, before turning towards Ghes. "Something...is in there," he said slowly, disbelief the dominant emotion on his face.
Ghes stepped back involuntarily. Although it seemed implausible that there could be 'something' in that empty space, Savin's surprised, disturbed look filled him with an innate sense of unease. He signalled for Savin to hand him the tricorder and quickly recalibrated to have it read for trionic signatures. His science training was still very much with him. "Nothing on any known trionic wavelengths," he murmured.
"What makes you think...?" Realisation moulded Ghes's features as he spoke. "Your telepathic abilities. Do you think you're reading something?" Then there was the alert from his tricorder. "A strong trionic spike... It's increasing in intensity. Focussed at the back of the closet. I recommend we - Savin? Are you alright?"
Savin shook his head. "A spike...when i touched the shelf?" Dread filled his eyes as he reached for the shelf again, watching Gheskori. "Watch the tricorder," he suggested as his palm pressed against the shelf again, this time further towards the back of the closet. Resisting the urge to pull back, he closed his eyes, concentrating on his breathing. "There is something," he repeated, "I do not know what. Something, sentient...I do not believe it is malign but I do not believe it to be benign either. Something...strong..."
"Inside the ship?" Ghes asked, eyes flickering to his personal weapons locker the other side of his quarters. "How far can your senses reach?" He thought some more: it seemed Savin's abilities could both dampen and amplify the signal. He looked back at his tricorder, "The trionic signal increases as you move closer to the rear of the closet. Try.. pressing both hands to the back wall..." Ghes ran to the weapons locker, drawing a phaser and focussing it on his closet - as ridiculous as it seemed, "Don't worry. I'll try not to hit you."
Turning back, thereby facing away from Gheskori completely, Savin pressed both hands to the back of the closet, his breath excaping in a hiss. Then, the wall panels seemed to break away as something burst through. It came out with such speed that Savin was shoved back, sprawling on the deck. He cried out, feeling as if the palms of his hands were covered in second degree burns and all he could see was a very bright white light. Then, his vision greyed out.
Ghes had no time to react at all. He ignored the flash of light from the closet - as extraordinary as it was - and dived towards the downed Savin. Tentatively - considering the Denobulans' and Vulcans' mutual dislike of physical touch - he shook Savin by the shoulders. "Can you hear me Savin!" he shouted, hoping the near-deaf vulcan could hear him. "It's Commodore Gheskori. What did you sense."
The shaking revived him a little though panic flooded his features. "A presence," he whispered, sensing Gheskori's words, through the skin-on-skin touch. "Powerful... Strong..."
Ghes got the queasy feeling of a mass approaching behind him - huge, bulky, exeskeletoned, at least 2 metres tall. He twisted on his haunches, using his body to shield Savin from the new arrival. The silent monstrosity regarded them with slow deliberate movements. It was after a few seconds that Ghes realised the being wasn't entirely corporeal. A hologram then, of sorts.
The being had emerged from the closet - a blinding, sublime miasma of kaleidoscopic light rotating behind him where the closet door had been. Ghes rose to his feet, guarding the prone and sense-deprived Savin. "I'm Commodore Gheskori of the Federation Starship USS Enzio." Thoughts of reason and diplomacy caught up with him fast. "It's my belief your people have made contact with our peace negotiators on the surface. Why have you chosen this method to contact us?"
(tag kasan'thar)
Savin crawled back to his feet, using Gheskori's body as a pillar, and a means to orient himself. The touch was reassuring, reminding him of where he was, now that he was deprived of all sense but touch and empathy. "Captain... we have a problem," he whispered, "I can no longer see..."

The team materialized in a large, bright room. So bright, in fact, that it caused the whole team to squint as their eyes struggled to adjust. Obviously, the Kasan’thar’s attention to detail had mistaken the amount of light needed.
Kay surveyed the room and noticed the Kasan had gone out of their way to accommodate their Starfleet guests. An abundance of amenities, such as tables laden with food and soft couches, were lined around the room. It looked as though the Kasan had researched starship interiors and mimicked them to perfection.
At the far end of the room, a translucent wall separated the diplomatic team from the hellfire of a class Y environment. The wall kept the two worlds from mingling, but was thin enough to see vague outlines of the Kasan delegation. Kay noticed several shadowy figures and, even without visual detail, she could tell how large and formidable they were.
Knowledge of Kasan customs was so limited, Kay didn’t know how to proceed. She decided a simple greeting was best. “I am honored to be here. I am Captain Kaylana Cornette, representing the starship Rainier and the United Federation of Planets.”
The echo of her words was still reverberating as a high-pitched screeching noise filled the room. Within milliseconds, the UT cut through the shrill cry with the words, “Welcome.”
The Universal Translator struggled to keep up with the nails-on-blackboard noises the Kasan used for language. Kay wondered why their piercing noises were being heard; the UT was supposed to filter it out. She worried, probably unnecessarily, that some words were being lost in the translation. The delicate nature of these negotiations weighed on her and she wanted no miscommunication.
Pleasantries between the two parties continued as each attempted to establish trust. Kay toiled to lay the groundwork, explaining in-depth as to why she was there and not her commanding officer. The Kasan’thar seemed to be understanding of officers assuming different roles when expertise and experience require it.
A full thirty minutes passed with Kay growing ever more convinced the Kasan’thar were genuine in their desire for peace.
Suddenly, Paikea interrupted, saying he had just received a message from the Rainier that an unidentified ship was in the area.
(tag: Pai)
The UT cut out and a loud chittering was heard beyond the gossamer wall. Kay surmised the Kasan’thar delegation was just now getting the news too.
Cornette waited for the Kasan to resume talks, and she waited. Some of her diplomatic team had started to meander through the room, pick at the food offered on the tables and sit on the couches. Somehow, Kay’s instincts told her to stay put. She remained at attention, facing the Kasan wall, imagining they were reading her, realizing they had nothing to do with this ship and hoping they wouldn’t let paranoia dissolve the chance for peace.

The crystalline-encased being shrieked incomprehensible static, the universal translator catching up to provide Ghes with the translation. "Commander Rez'tal. My ships grew impatient." Ghes assumed that was the Kasan'thar's name. He backed away, continuing to shield Savin who rose unsteadily to his feet behind the Commodore.
"Captain... we have a problem... I can no longer see..." he heard Savin whispering behind him.
Ghes tapped his commbadge, =/\=Medical team to the Captain's quarters. We have a man injured. Recommend extreme caution... Do not enter until I give permission.=/\= Ghes couldn't fathom the total sensory-deprivation of a loss of hearing and sight. He allowed Savin to keep hold of him so the vulcan wouldn't become disorientated.
<Tag Savin/Saryn>
His attention was returned forcibly to the intruder; he found himself backing away. Although it was as he believed a hologram, he couldn't be sure what the Kasans' limits were with holographic projection technology. The possibility they could cause physical harm couldn't be discounted.
The Kasan took one step forward. "We are perplexed by your vessel's presence here. Why do you shadow us in the outer system? We've proven we have no hostile intentions. You might better spend your time with your vessel in orbit of the planet as we had arranged."
"I was under orders," Ghes said calmly. He treaded carefully, knowing that it wasn't his place to be negotiating and that he could well step on the toes of Captain Cornette's diplomacy team. But, his ship had been infiltrated. It was a violation. Why hadn't they simply hailed the Enzio? "With respect," he continued, "You have not proven you have no hostile intentions. Comm silence since entering the system, and now, you choose to intrude in my quarters and injure a member of my crew."
The Kasan'thar hologram hesitated. "We can no longer trust in open communication in this system. You, with your advanced technology must've detected the ship crossing the border into your space."
"Yes." Ghes replied steelily, "We were wondering if you had sent it."
Silence dominated the air. The Kasan'thar's eye slits, fires glowing within, regarded him implacably. Ghes tried to evaluate the being; he couldn't work out if he was remaining silent because of guilt or if, maybe, he thought Ghes was trying to deflect the blame. Could the Kasan really believe that Ghes was trying to deceive him, that it was Starfleet that'd sent the ship?
"We have nothing to do with that ship," the Kasan shrieked in a lower tone, something like a murmur, "We've attempted to scan it but our sensors cannot penetrate its shields." It stepped back, the encounter evidently coming to an end. It dissolved into a wall, its projected form cast back across the reaches of intrasolar space to the shining jewels of the battlecruisers visible outside Ghes's portal.
As soon as it was gone Ghes tapped his commbadge, =/\=Bridge. Redouble efforts to penetrate that unknown vessel. I want to know exactly what it is and what it contains. Otherwise - seemingly by accident - we could have a diplomatic disaster on our hands.=/\=

Paikea knowledge of the Kasan'thar was probably more limited than Captain Cornette, but only a fool would automatically think that they were pressing for more violence. The room was emaculate, to the point that he felt that he shouldn't touch any of the food or beverages laid out for them. The wall separating both delegations stood directly in front of them and Paikea would wait until talks began the two parties. Once the pleasantries began Paikea made sure to keep tabs of everything that was being said. While he trusted the universal translator, he felt that it would take some time to get used to the Kasan'thari language. Once the Kasan'thar began to speak, his suspicions were confirmed as their voices sounded like nails on a board. Pai saw that the delegation grew extremely annoyed at the noise and Pai would being to work on it as soon as everyone was introduced.
"This is Commander Paikea Apirana, he's our vessel's science officer," Captain Cornette said as Pai's turn had come.
"Thank you for this opportunity, Ambassador. In hopes of better understanding, I'll be working on our universal translator behind all the food," Paikea said cautiously.
"This is acceptable, you may begin," the shrill voice of one of the Kasan'thar replied.
Pai quickly grabbed one of his tool kits and began to work on the universal translator. He had been prepared this time and he wasn't about to allow misunderstandings to undermine another mission. It had happened before with the Rainier, and he was not going to let that happened again. While he had been making progress his combadge activated and relayed a very disturbing message. Worst yet, they didn't know what kind of vessel had just appeared around the planet.
"Captain, apologies, but the Rainer has reported an unidentified vessel entering the planet's orbit. They are not responding to hails," Pai said as he quickly looked over at the wall that separated them from the Kasan'thar. They would quickly realize the same information that Paikea had just relayed to Cornette. It seemed that the rest of the delegation was used to these types of situations, but Paikea was not. He quickly finished up his work on the universal translator, feeling comfortable that for now this was the best that he could do. The computers on the Rainier would process the information once it was able to and better the program.
"Captain, the Rainer reports a situation," Pai reported," apparently a holographic projection of a Kasan materialized on the ship, they are suspicious of this new ship."

Ghes received a most disturbing report from Commander Matthew that a Kasan'thar had materialised on the Rainier also. The range of their holographic technology shocked him, and made him wonder why the Kasan felt they were allowed to be so invasive in their comms, with those they proposed to make peace with.
That night the Kasan captain visited him again, this time in his ready room. Ghes immediately rose from his chair, "You wounded one of my crewmembers!"
The Kasan affected a bow, "Well met, indeed, Commodore Gheskori of the Enzio." The hologram flickered as it moved around the ready room; Ghes tracked him with a quiet interest. "I don't trust you, Commodore... I don't trust your Admirals, I don't trust the Federation. That small vessel - that you claim is not yours - now lies in orbit of the planet."
"I was under orders from Admiral Jackson herself not to block the vessel. I would've done so, if I had my own way," Ghes added, hints of bitterness in his voice.
"All the more reason, Commodore, that we the Kasan should be suspicious. Your mission commander has issued an order to allow the vessel safe access to the planet. What do you think that looks like to us?" Ghes remained silent, running a finger along the varnished grain edge of the ready room table.
"I'll share another secret with you, Gheskori... I don't trust my own commanders either. They have a... disconcertingly honest desire for peace with your people. I can see from your demeanour that you think along similar lines. We're one and the same... Ignite the war, Gheskori. I will of course, respond with the full might of the forces at my disposal in this system, and will profess fury at your treachery. The rest of my officers, perhaps the majority of the Kasan'thar military will be furious with your actions. But that's what we both want, isn't it?" the Kasan hologram loomed over him, threatening despite its immaterialism.
Well, it's what Cain wants. Ghes thought dryly. "I'm committed to peace between our peoples, Commander. Your provocations will not move me."
The Kasan disappeared, his projected form shot back across millions of kilometres. Ghes sat for a long time pensively regarding the PADDS on his desk. The top one displayed a schematic of the Kasan cruiser design; weapons emplacements, weakpoints. He picked it off the pile and started studying.
"Commodore Gheskori to the bridge. Sir, that civilian vessel is changing course again." Ghes silently signalled for a report as he entered the bridge. "They've shifted to a higher orbit, sir, respositioning for a typical out-of-system trajectory..." the tactical officer looked up, "They're hailing us, sir."
The bridge fell silent. "Daya, Tiana, did you manage to pierce their shields? Anything you can give me?" He waited for the two officers to give their reports.
"Very well. On screen," Ghes requested, and as the image materialised he grunted while the rest of the bridge offered sharp intakes of breath. Not at all what they'd expected. The civilian ship's bridge - unless this was some deception - was a clear Starfleet design. This one was narrow, minimal consoles at the front manned by Starfleet officers in harnesses, and the walls lining the fuselage as it were had on them racks stowed with weaponry, along which roamed Federation Marine officers.
The vessel's captain nodded at Ghes, as if she recognised him. Gheskori was sure he'd never met the woman before. "Commodore Gheskori. We are tightbeaming this message to your location... Orders confirmed, sir. Your planned attack on the Kasan'thar battlecruisers has been approved by Command."
Ghes turned pale. "Wh- "
"We should keep this comm short and minimal, Commodore," the other craft's Captain - who apparently was commanding a disguised Federation scout - replied. "You have the go-ahead. Commence your attack, starting with the MVAM split of your vessel to surround the Kasan'thar capital ships."
"Captain... I don't believe we've been introduced," Ghes responded forcefully, his face fast turning red, "I do not know what you're talking about!"
The comm ended. Ghes turned panickedly to his officers. "Report!"
"The ship is departing the system, sir. Warp 3."
"Sir..." Daya and Tiana attracted his attention. "They were lying." Ghes rolled his eyes. That much was obvious. "They didn't tightbeam the message on to the Enzio, at least not properly, sir. We believe they intentionally allowed some of the information to leak out."
"Possibly... Possibly to the Kasan'thar cruisers..." Ghes mused, collapsing stunned in his chair. True enough, they received a hail from the lead Kasan cruiser.

"Well Doctor at my quarterly check-up I passed with flying colors I was just ask to losses a few pounds cut back on working long hours look for ways to reduce my stress Doc Being An executive Officer on a starship long Hours high Stress come with the job."
Lorna had to smile. "I quite agree, being second in command of s starship is a high stress job, but I doubt that you are planning to give up your career, instead I would recommend that you try to have a routine whenever possible and make sure you sleep at regular hours in non-crisis situations." She could have said something about being CMO on a starship, heck being a Starfleet officer was stressful. "I also recommend that you take at least an hour a week to unwind, listen to music, paint, cook whatever it is that lets you relax, those are doctor's orders."
Lorna finished checking over Commander Matthews, he was fit and healthy and so Lorna signed him off. The rest of her shift continued uneventfully which was something of a rarity. As her shift wound down Lorna started contemplating what she was going to prepare for dinner. In the end she decided on peppered steak, fried potatoes and greens. In the midst of her laying the table Cris arrived back, Lorna was surprised to see her wife sporting a black eye, clearly Lorna had missed something interesting.
"Now that looks intriguing."
Cris shrugged "It's all patched up, thought I'd let the blood dissipate on it's own so I could be home on time"
Lorna cocked her head to one side, "I don't think I've seen you with a proper black eye. I don't think it's your best look."
Her wife shrugged again, "I think the broken nose was a worse look." She had never been quite sure how she had avoided getting a black eye on that occasion.
"You could well be right. Of course I had blood in my eyes at the time so I will have to admit that my view was a bit impaired."
Cris laughed and settled at the table as Lorna started serving up dinner. "As it turns out seven year olds who are fitting can pack quite a punch." Lorna's eyebrows went up a little as she heard the story. Cris's reactions were usually far better than that but it was a medic's instinct to put yourself in the firing line rather than your patient. The rest of the story came over dinner. Just another day in the life of two of the Rainer's medical staff.

The fist thing she and Daya had tried was varying the frequency of the sensors. There were a few little blips but nothing that really helped them figure out what they were looking at.
It was now time to try more exotic probes and there were a lot of options.

Commander Daya had he head down looking at the console in front of him, unaware of the presence behind him until she spoke. I'm Tiana Galwyn the Enzio's CScO, pleased to meet you. I heard an unscannable ship had been found and thought I would come and offer another brain to throw ideas into the pot."
She looked past him at the display. It must have updated at least once while she was en route from the main lab. "So what have got so far?"
"well so far, i have scanned, rescanned, and scanned again this civilian shuttle, and i have yet to get past its shields. i have re-calibrated the scanner at least a half a dozen times" Daya leaned back a little as Commander Galwyn took a moment to look over his console.
As soon as it was gone Ghes tapped his commbadge, =/\=Bridge. Redouble efforts to penetrate that unknown vessel. I want to know exactly what it is and what it contains. It was now time to try more exotic probes and there were a lot of options.
Daya had spent the night sitting at his console, he couldn't sleep anyway, so he figured he would work. Trying to scan the ship over and over again, finally he gave up and he started scanning the area around the ship, to see if anything showed up that might help. "Commodore Gheskori to the bridge. Sir, that civilian vessel is changing course again." Ghes silently signaled for a report as he entered the bridge. "They've shifted to a higher orbit, sir, repositioning for a typical out-of-system trajectory..." the tactical officer looked up, "They're hailing us, sir."

Daya sat back and watched the screen while the Admiral talked with a supposed star-fleet officer, on board the civilian ship he had spent all night trying to scan. Hearing something about orders to attack kasan'thar made Daya sit up in his chair. Something didn't feel right about this ship the crew on board and this mission, but unfortunately right now was not the time to speak about it.
"Sir..." Daya and Tiana attracted his attention. "They were lying." Ghes rolled his eyes. That much was obvious. "They didn't tightbeam the message on to the Enzio, at least not properly, sir. We believe they intentionally allowed some of the information to leak out."

"Admiral, what was she talking about? Some sort of order to attack the kasan'thar? Is there something going on that we don't know about?" The commander was standing only feet away from the admiral, who was sitting in his chair. Daya wasn't normally a person who would confront his commanding officers, but something didn't seem right about this whole mission.

"...However, there are a few milliseconds each cycle when the power levels drop. I don't think it's intentional. I believe that that ship has been damaged."
Ghes glanced at Tiana, smiling at her confident ability to deduce something from the scans that had thus far proven fruitless. He asked the relevant people to scan the engine signature of the intruding vessel and find out the course it had taken to get here. He discovered - courtesy of the officers' quick report - that the civ ship had passed within a thousand kilometres of the Kasan battlecruisers. This wasn't making much sense. "If they are damaged, could it have been caused by the cruisers?"
"Possible, sir..." an officer looked up, "But not reading any damage to their shield grid. Even if it is back to full strength, there would be a residual element showing that the ship has been fired on."
"Unless their shields were lowered at the time."
"Sir?"
"What if they invited the attack from the Kasan? With their shields lowered the cruisers would've seen that humans were aboard and the vessel showed signs of being of Starfleet origin." Discussion went back and forth until Ghes was satisfied nothing further could be deduced from the scans. Anything else was mere conjecture, which he did like, but certainly not in situations such as this. "Very well. On screen," he requested. [see second part of reply on 31st Jan]
"Admiral, what was she talking about? Some sort of order to attack the kasan'thar? Is there something going on that we don't know about?"
Ghes began to shake his head but the tactical officer had answered the Kasan cruisers' hail. "Sir, they're requesting audio only." Ghes glanced at Daya, sighing at the Ops officer's inquisitiveness and tugging down on his uniform jacket. He nodded at tactical. Eerie washed-out static filtered over the bridge speakers.
Whining and scratching sounds followed the static, making them cringe . The surprised universal translator lagged behind, eventually formulating the Kasan's opening words. "Federation vessel. This is a betrayal of our commitments to peace! Explain yourselves!"
Ghes stood up, "There is no plan to attack your vessels and we do not recognise the unaligned vessel that has passed from your side of the border to ours. Whatever your scans of the vessel may have indicated, it is not under the operation of Starfleet and if it is it cannot be acting with the authorisation of Starfleet Command or the Federation Council."
The static died away like the stiff breeze before a storm. "Sir, they've cut the channel and opened up their drives, closing on our side of the border."
"Commander Daya. Indeed everyone," Ghes addressed the bridge, "I give you my word as a Starfleet officer that there is no ulterior motive on behalf of Starfleet. I've been given no secret orders past those you already know about. If this some sort of subterfuge, I was not made aware of it."
He gave his words a few moments to sink in and was about to speak again before the lead Kasan cruiser opened fire. The bolt approached across nearly a million kilometres and would be easily evaded. But that would change once the Kasan closed to normal combat distances. "Raise shields, arm all weapons," he ordered, "And fall back towards the planet." It was not for the first time in his career that Ghes had had to order a fighting retreat from the Kasan'thar.

"Send a message to Commander Matthew. Tell him that the Kasan out here believe we intend to start a war with them, and that the civilian vessel gave them the news by reporting to us and leaking the information. I want to know if either of the Admirals can shed any light on this better than I can."

Lorna and Cris finished their dinner and settled back on the sofa. Lorna was reading a paper on new form of bone regeneration while Cris was composing a letter to her brother. An half an hour later found Cris reading the paper and Lorna writing a letter to her mother.
It was a peaceful evening. Lorna's comm badge chirped, =/\=This is Mari Tainer to Doctor Holsen. Um, I know you and Cris are off this evening. I've got training room 2 booked if you want to come down join me?=/\=
Lorna glanced at her wife and shrugged, Cris nodded.
=/\=Hi Mari, Lorna here. Cris and I will be down in ten minutes.=/\=
=/\=Great, see you soon=/\=
Lorna glanced at Cris, "Pretty as you eyes are. I probably ought to get rid of that bruising before we add to it."
"Probably best. Although I suspect it will you getting bruised..."
Lorna shrugged as she opened the medical kit, in their quarters there were medical kits in every room, "You're awfully confident, don't you remember what happened last time?". She ran the dermal regenerator over Cris's eyebrow to drain away the fluids which had gathered there.
Cris shrugged one shouldered careful not to more the eyebrow that was being treated. Not that dermal regeneration caused probablems when applied to healthy skin but it was a habit. "That's not quite how I remember it. But I'll forgive you the memory lapse, this time...
A few minutes later the colours were gone and Lorna stood up and stretched. Cris planted a kiss on her wife's lips and then went off to the bedroom to change leaving Lorna put the medical kit away.

Tiana was still on the bridge, she was frustrated. Some paced, some listened to loud music, at this moment she had two PADDs displaying information in different formats. The fingers of her left hand tapped out a quiet staccato rhythm against the edge of her console which made a counter point to her right hand tapping on the console and the PADDs.
She had gone through a variety of scans at different frequency and the various results were overlayed on one of her screens. They weren't consistent. Which was her latest puzzle.
"Admiral, what was she talking about? Some sort of order to attack the kasan'thar? Is there something going on that we don't know about?"
Tiana wasn't sure what was happening or if there was anything she could say. She had not forgotten the way Ghes had looked at her earlier as if he had suddenly decided that she was a different person. She knew she had not changed despite the memories that had been brought to the surface with Savin's help. She smiled at the thought of the Vulcan and wondered when they would actually have some time to spend together. She sighed and refocussed on her work if she was going to convince her CO she was the same person she had always been just with a few extra memories.

OOC: This is a JP between Stacey Jackson and Gheskori
Stacey stood up from the command chair her jaw tightly clenched, like the Kasan'thar ships Rainier had picked up the badly encoded message that the civilian ship transmitted to Enzio.
"Admiral, the Kasan'thar ships have powered weapons and are moving to intercept the Enzio." came a report from tactical.
Stacey took a deep breath. "Red alert, full power to shields but keep our weapons on minimal power." The lights grew dim and the flashes of red from the alert lights flashed on every wall.
"Helm lay in course for Enzio full impulse." She turned and added. "Hail the lead Kasan'thar ship."
She moved to stand closer to the view screen. "Kasan'thar vessel, this is Vice Admiral Stacey Jackson if your ships make take any aggressive action against a Federation starship we will be forced to take any and all actions to stop you." She stepped forward again. "We know you detected the message sent to Enzio we did too, I give you my word Starfleet has not authorized any attack and never would take such an action." She paused for a moment. "We still have people on the surface of the planet too, there is no reason for this deception to destroy what we have started here."
She waited for a moment but no response came she turned around and her tactical officer nodded. "They definitely heard us Admiral."
She turned around again. "Open a channel to the Enzio but make sure the Kasan'thar can hear it."
"Commodore Gheskori this is Admiral Jackson, until such time that a full investigation can be conducted into the allegations we have all heard I am relieving you of duty, your Executive Officer will be beamed back to your ship to take command."
She moved in behind her helm officer and reached down to input a set of co-ordinates that would move the Rainier to sit in between the Enzio and the Kasan'thar vessels.
Gheskori spun to the tactical officer, having a hard time believing what he was hearing. "Secure this channel," he snapped, trying his best to rein in his rising temper, "Ensure the Kasan cannot hear us."
"Admiral Jackson, this is Commodore Gheskori. You know this has nothing to do with me." It was all he could not to shout at his superior officer. Was she really willing to carry it this far, to create the pretense that the Federation were investigating internally to find out if the Enzio or anyone else responsible? Or did she actually think Ghes had something to do with this?
No response was immediately forthcoming. "Are you just keeping up appearances, Admiral?!" he blurted as he watched the Sovereign class vessel sliding into position on the viewscreen, blocking off the Enzio's sight of the lead Kasan cruiser.
Stacey looked sharply up at but paused before she spoke, taking a few deep breaths she replied as calmly as she could. "Keeping up appearances Commodore? if our places were reversed what would you do?" Her voice grew sharper. "As to what I believe to be true Commodore right at this moment that is of little importance."
She looked around her bridge for a moment. "That message we all heard had embedded stafleet security codes in its signal, I assure you any investigation will be entirely genuine, if your not involved your most likely being.." Her voice trailed off and she ran a hand under her chin while looking at the security officer, he leaned down and muted the channel.
Jackson took a deep breath. "Find Admiral Cain, bring her to me."
She watched him nod and step into the turbolift. "Open the channel."
"Commodore, you have your orders choose someone to take over command, you won't be confined to your quarters or the brig." She paused for a moment and added with a strong tone. "There will be no further private comm channels, we don't need to be seen as keeping further secrets, I will not allow a chance for peace to be squandered."
Ghes inhaled sharply, seething, on the verge of losing control. She had lost it completely. How in her right mind could she implicate him? He tried to see it from her point of view, how she might see events out here while the Rainier was in orbit of the planet and removed from what the Enzio was doing. Even though she would've been in the dark to an extent, Gheskori had been sending her somewhat regular updates and soliciting no response in most cases. Now she jumped on him at the first suspected indiscretion.
It was all he could do not to openly vilify the Admiral before his own bridge crew. But to do so would be unprofessional. He'd already had insubordinate thoughts - best not to turn those into actions that could damn him. "Very well, Admiral..." he said, squaring himself up and grounding his jaw. "I stand relieved. Commander Matthew will be appointed command in my place on a temporary basis, until we can clear this unfortunate misunderstanding up."
He decided to remain on the bridge - and in effective command - until Matthew could be beamed over. Obviously he wasn't happy with this course of events... However, in the pure interest of presenting a united front, he would swallow his pride and put Starfleet and the uniform before justice. He hoped Jackson could live with herself - many terrible acts in history had been justified by being carried out in the name of conformity and in the service of an entity other than a living, thinking being. It was enough to make him consider the unthinkable - if only in a 'what if' scenario - and open fire on the Sovereign class vessel that lay between him and those he reluctantly held as his enemy.
He consoled himself as he left the bridge. This matter did need to be investigated. It was only a shame that the righteous Admiral Jackson thought he needed to be removed from command in order to proceed. "Admiral..." he said, lingering, "One final request. I'd like to join any investigatory procedures into this subterfuge. There's something I might be able to help with."
She looked around as someone stepped onto her bridge. "Stand by Commodore." She replied in response to his request.
"Admiral, Cain is no longer on board." He paused for a moment. "Our computer records don't reveal a method of departure, however they indicate she left approximately fifteen minutes ago."
Jackson held in a deep breath for a moment, "Return to her quarters and conduct a full search, I want to know how she got off this ship and where she went." She looked back at the view screen, "Keep an eye on those ships if they so much as move an inch I want to know about it, I'll be back in a few minutes."
She stepped into the turbolift, her mind racing there was something she was missing, some piece on the board she had neglected to take account of.
**USS Enzio Commanding Officers Quarters**
As the door opened and Gheskori walked in, Stacey stepped out from a dark corner and said. "Listen to me very closely Commodore we do not have much time." She stepped closer to him. "I know you have had conversations with Admiral Cain." She locked her eyes onto him. "If you know where she is you must tell me." She kept her eyes on him intently.
Ghes was stunned to find the Admiral in his quarters and wondered why the intruder alarm hadn't gone off as soon as the Enzio had detected an unauthorised commbadge. Perhaps she'd used a fleet override command. Just as he felt like strangling her she revealed that Cain had disappeared from the Rainier.
Ghes tried not to show too much surprise, although he knew doing so would increase the likelihood of Jackson thinking him guilty. "Admiral, I give you my word, I do not know where she has gone." Jackson continued to leer at him, perceiving he wasn't telling the whole truth. Finally, Ghes conceded. "Very well," he lowered his head, "It's true that we talked on the Starbase. She instructed me to investigate the Kasan'thar, to find out what they were really up to here. But since then I've become convinced that while they don't trust us, their intentions are as honourable as ours. My contact with her since then has been minimal. The last order she gave me was to take the Enzio the outer system."
He mused silently as Jackson continued to watch him. In a way he wasn't surprised that Cain was involved, but the timing was unusual. Ghes hadn't had any warning, which meant Cain no longer saw him as a trustworthy asset. "There aren't many places that she could've gone. I think we can discount the Kasan ships... That leaves the surface of the planet, and the merchant ship that had Starfleet officers on board. We tracked the ship to the limit of short range sensors... It's since vanished. If she's gone with it, can we not continue as normal?"
"It would be foolish to assume that the attempts to sabotage the conference have been thwarted so easily, I suggest you check your crew especially new arrivals or anybody with a history of service under Cain." She paused. "I'll do the same on my ship, and pray Captain Cornette is having better luck than we are."
"Aye, Admiral." Ghes was relieved that the tension had lifted between them, "I'll start with my science officer."
She stepped back. "For the moment it would be better if people assumed you and I were not speaking, lest we cause them to accelerate their plans before we can stop it the first attempt almost started an armed conflict, I assume the second won't be any more benign." She reached up and tapped her comm badge twice and was suddenly beamed back to her ready room on Rainier.
Ghes tapped his commbadge, "Commander Galwyn Cet, this is Gheskori, please report to my quarters in 30 minutes." He trusted Tiana, and didn't see the need to investigate her without her knowledge. A face to face encounter was sufficient - possessing the memories of Nawar Cet, perhaps she would know something of Cain's mind to deduce where she had gone. He was aware that Savin had melded with her to find some information and thought it wise to summon him also.

Once he was settled in his quarters, staying out of his XO's way for a while to let him assert his authority more effectively, he contacted the bridge, in order to keep up appearances... "Commander Matthew, come to my quarters at your leisure. Gheskori out." He stated it like an order. The XO arrived minutes later. "Commander, we both know that this arrangement is in name only... I hold command still, yes? I want you to allow me to lead on the bridge. You must realise... Jackson's commitment to peace has clouded her judgement."
