Lorna had double checked what she discovered. None of the Doctor cited in the last five years of Admiral Cain's psych evaluations were general Starfleet. Either they were civilian, or they were buried somewhere above her level of clearance, or the didn't exist. All three of those raised questions and Lorna didn't have any answers.
She sent her findings to both Admiral Jackson and Captain Cornette she just wished she knew what it all meant. She looked at the chrono. She should have been off shift a while ago which meant that Cris would be arriving to drag her away soon. Lorna got to her feet and stretched, her spine and right shoulder both clicked. She would get Cris to look at both when she got home.
When the door to her quarters hissed open she was overwhelmed with the scent of chocolate and cinnamon and honey.
"I thought you might want something to help you unwind" Cris said pushing a steaming cup into her wife's hands. Lorna smiled and gave Cris a peck on the cheek.
"Thank you." Lorna settled on the sofa and sipped at the hot chocolate.

"Commanders Matthew, Daya and Dr Saryn, my ready room please." He rose from his seat, the requested individuals promptly following.
"Doctor Saryn, Commander Galwyn is acting on my orders. Our plan is to trap Admiral Cain. Your son is... safe," he looked up and said once the doors were closed and he was installed in his ready room chair. He regarded all three of them, "What do we make of this Kasan departure? We can't leave this position with Cain still out there to be drawn in, but the Kasan seem to want to depart and leave us, and the Rainier, seemingly from Cain's point of view out here for no reason. Will she see any reason to come back now?"
"What other choice do we have?" Daya asked as he moved to the side. "unless we can make it seem that we are still repairing the damage done to us by commander Cet. We can't spend to much time waiting for the commander or this whole ruse will be a waste."
"Commodore Gheskori to the bridge. We have a signal from Admiral Cain's vessel, sir."
Ghes flicked his eyes at the three officers before him. "Has Tiana made contact?" he spoke to the bridge, pressing a button on his desk.
"Negative, sir. We're still reading Galwyn and Savin's lifesigns but it's not a communication. Recommend you come to the bridge immediately, sir." Ghes rose from his seat with Saryn close behind, Matthew and Daya following after. The Denobulan frowned as he sat in the command chair, avoided the CMO's gaze momentarily. He knew full well that he had given Saryn false hope, suggesting that Savin was safe, but it had simply slipped out. Now he might come to regret it.
Ghes had the viewscreen zoomed to show the merchant vessel, its dark form still receding into the nothingness. "Report."
The tactical officer was the one to offer explanation, "We've registered a change of status in the vessel's computer core. I can't be absolutely certain, sir, but it would seem the vessel's self destruct has been activated." Ghes met eyes with Saryn. He'd thought he might come to rue his words of assurance but this was ridiculous. All the work, the plotting, the falsifying of Commander Galwyn's allegiance... - Cain or whoever was aboard that vessel had seen through it almost immediately.
He asked how long they had. "If it is the self-destruct, then slightly over three minutes," tactical replied.
"Close on the vessel. Full impulse," Ghes ordered, almost sighing as he rose to his feet and started pacing. How lacking in sensibility he had been to presume he could outwit Cain so simply. True enough, on approach intensive scans revealed that there were no lifesigns left aboard the vessel except his own Enzio crewmembers, if there had ever been any of Cain's people aboard. "Does it have shielding?"
"Yes, but minimal."
"Prepare a low yield quantum torpedo sufficient to deplete its shield grid. As soon as the grid fails lock on to Tiana and Savin's signals and beam them to sickbay." He couldn't risk them making it back to the Anderson, if they were even in a position to do so. He also knew that Cain would know he'd be able to rescue the two officers. But this trap had given the Admiral all the time she had needed to get away. Unless... "Scan the surrounding space. Any sign of another vessel besides the Rainier and the two Kasan cruisers?"
After a pause Daya responded negative. "... And those two Kasan'thar cruisers have just warped away, sir."
Ghes sighed, collapsing back in the command chair. The Enzio dashed by the merchant vessel that now spun all three axes, control intentionally lost as she'd been abandoned, firing its azure torpedo and collapsing the shields. Not a second later, a glimmer of a spark came from within the ship, as if it was living thing and had briefly become luminescent at its many pores; it then exploded into the night.
"Do we have them?" he demanded, for a brief moment not caring if the destruction was due to a self destruct program or the quantum torpedo.
"we have them sir, but one lifesign is slowly fading" Daya had turned in his chair as he spoke. =^=sickbay report to transporter room 2 for emergency care=^=

Cain had remained fairly silent as she glanced from Cet to the Vulcan. "Your memories must be faulty, otherwise you would surely have remembered I am not stupid." Tiana raised her eyebrows, she had expected this; Patriza Cain was anything but stupid, it was one of the things that Nawar had liked about her; but before she could say anything Admiral Cain snapped her fingers.
Tiana saw Savin collapse and saw the smoke rising from where he had been shot. If she had been a fraction less stunned she would definitely have broken character. As it was she stayed where she was and glared at the Admiral.
"Disarm them." She flatly stated as multiple guards stepped forward weapons drawn. Tiana waited while she was disarmed. She spent the time examining the surroundings and Admiral Cain, there was something slightly off about her but Tiana couldn’t put her finger on what it was.
"I want to know exactly who sent you here, I want to know exactly what Jackson and Gheskori are up too."
Tiana raised her eyebrows “While I understand your caution, I think that was slightly excessive, not to mention messy. Of course I will tell you all I know about what they were planning.” Tiana surprised herself by sighing “I had hoped to do it in peace with maybe a Bolian coffee, but we can start right now. Where do you want to start.”
Admiral Cain paused, apparently considering. She reached out and took the Vulcans sword out of the hand of her guard. "Crude."
Tiana was about to respond but Savin beat her to it. That was a promising sign.
"Not crude," he gasped. "Effective to defend my charge. I failed to defend Tiana, or Nawar however you wish it. I am sworn to protect her. We were not sent, we came of our own free will."
She looked down and shrugged. "Clearly not that effective." She slowly shook her head. "Hide behind techincalites all you like Vulcan, but you and I both know you are here with the permission of either Admiral Jackson or Gheskori." She took a deep breath. "And not as is claimed here for to aid me."
"Do you not think I can tell the difference between a real and staged battle?" She shook her head slowly. "So you will tell me exactly why you are here and you will not leave out any details."
“You would be amazed at the damage someone with a science officer’s training and a C1C’s access codes can do to a Federation Starship. The Enzio couldn’t fire on us and they couldn’t fix what I had done in the time available.”
"They had to let us leave, or Tiana would have destroyed the Enzio." It was as truthful as he could deliver it, especially since he really didn't have additional information and as far as he knew, she did have the means to do it. "Please..." He struggled to sit up, though it was excruciating to move. His vision greyed out for a moment as he tried to keep his eyes on her. One lapse and he'd miss what she was saying. He couldn't afford it. "I need medical assistance ."
She sighed in disgust. "Unfortunately we don't have a Medical Officer on board." She shrugged slightly. "Well as much as I would enjoy continuing our discussion, you are clearly not going to reveal the truth and I have far more important things to work on." She paused for a moment. "Computer, recognize Cain Admiral, Patrizia, iniate self destruct sequence." She paused again and looked at Savin and Cet. "Four minutes, silent countdown."
"Enable." The computer warned that the ship would be destroyed in three minutes and fifty five seconds. As Cain turned to look at the pair. "Pitiful you didn't even come close to outsmarting me."
Her head turned to the left and she said. "Deactivate the holographic interface." Suddenly Cain and the guards vanished, Savins sword hit the ground with a loud thump.
Slumping back to the deck, Savin hissed in pain. "Tiana...I am sorry," he whispered, before losing the battle with consciousness.
“No need to be sorry. She didn’t what to believe us, clearly more paranoid than even I thought.” Tiana didn’t know whether Savin could hear her. She desperately wanted to run to his side but if she did that they would both die. The Enzio would be looking for them but unless she could deactivate the shields they would be going up with the ship. Tiana cursed as she went to the control panels. Naturally they were locked down but Tiana was more than a match for that, Admiral Cain wasn’t going to kill Cet twice.
She estimated that there were about 45 seconds left of the 4 minutes they had been allocated. She wanted to send a signal to the Enzio but she knew it was unlikely she would be able to defeat another set of encryption in the time. If she was going to be vapourised Tiana knew where she would rather be. She scooped up Savin’s sword and hurried to his side sliding to the deck plates at his side. She wanted to scoop him in into a hug but that would be a bad move. She put her hand on his upper arm and leaned over him.
There wasn’t long left on the timer. There couldn’t be. There was a tug at her and the familiar sensation of transportation. Tiana thought her last view of the ship involved an erupting fireball but possibly that was just her imagination.
The Enzio’s transporter room solidified around them. Then a group of medical personnel appeared. Tiana got to her feet. She knew there were tears forming at the corners of her eyes. He was shot in the back, phaser.”

Medics rushed to sickbay upon the summons, Saryn rushing from the bridge as well. If there was a medical emergency, he ought to be there anyway as chief medical officer. As he ran, he admitted to himself that he feared for the worst, that it was his son severely injured though of course he feared for Tiana too. He knew how much the young Trill woman meant to his first born.
He arrived just after two of his nurses did, watching as both knelt beside an obviously injured individual. The person wasn't moving and another was crouched beside him or her but from the doorway he couldn't really see. Only when he got closer, did he see who was who and breath stalled in his throat. Immediately, he knew he had to detach himself, let the nurses transfer his son to sickbay and have the EMH treat him. It was his duty, to focus on Tiana.
Approaching her, he gently rested his hand on her shoulder, then knelt beside her. "Miss Cet, can you tell me what happened?" he asked gently, forcing her attention away from the younger, unconscious Vulcan. "Are you injured in any way? DO you require medical assistance?" It was his duty to take her to sickbay anyway, especially since she might be in shock.
(Tiana)
Saryn rose to his feet, gently taking the Trill woman up with him, then tapped his combadge. "Transporter room to bridge. We have them captain, and we are transferring them to sickbay. Commander Cet appears uninjured on first glance but I am taking her to sickbay to be safe. Savin has been injured though I do not yet know the extend of his injuries. He will be treated by the EMH sir."
(Ghes)
== Sickbay ==
Guiding Tiana over to a bed, he made sure that she was uninjured and given a mild sedative to calm her no doubt raging nerves. "You may wait here for news on Savin if you wish," he told her, "or you may return to the bridge if you desire."
(Tiana)
At long last, Saryn joined the EMH, who stood over the motionless figure which lay face down on the bed. His upper body and lower back were exposed and the hologram was working fast and silently, until he noticed the CMO. "Damage is extensive, he will not be able to walk for several days until his spinal injury has been healed. He must, and I reiterate, must keep to bedrest sir. Preferably, kept sedated but I know you Vulcans won't like this. I assume, he will enter the tow-kath? And that you will wake him from it when appropriate?"
"If he is able, then yes I will. Has he entered tow-kath?"
The hologram nodded after studying his readings for a moment. "From his readings, he was in such pain that he did as soon as he was able to. He will be fine doctor, if he sticks to orders given. Why did he do something so foolish?"
Saryn shook his head. "I do not know, though I assume he did it for her." He gave a quiet nod to the waiting Trill woman. "They are...involved."

"We have them sir, but one lifesign is slowly fading" Daya had turned in his chair as he spoke. =^=Sickbay report to transporter room 2 for emergency care=^=
Ghes settled in his seat at Daya's report, relaxing only slightly at the news that Tiana and Savin were safely back aboard. The crumbling vessel they'd been rescued from slowly diffused into the surrounding space, hot embers of the wreckage dying out to join with the blackness, while the Enzio arrowed away from the scene, arcing around and then making a quick warp jump in system.
Saryn's voice came over the comm, he recently having left the bridge, "Transporter room to bridge. We have them captain, and we are transferring them to sickbay. Commander Cet appears uninjured on first glance but I am taking her to sickbay to be safe. Savin has been injured though I do not yet know the extent of his injuries. He will be treated by the EMH sir."
Ghes barely registered the communication at first, the adrenaline of the rescue still dominating him. The Enzio had transported the two crewmembers in the fraction of the second between shield collapse and core detonation, both of them alive. But what had caused their injuries? The destruction of the ship, or something or someone on it?
"Thank you, Doctor. Please let me know when you find out what caused Savin's injuries and keep me informed on their recoveries." Ghes closed the channel, both he and Saryn having shown a degree of detachment. He was impressed - even though Saryn was vulcan - that the Doctor was dealing with this so professionally. A Doctor treated his patients with the ethos that the preservation of each life was equally important, but... the Doctor seemed especially detached, almost as if he was avoiding treating his own son.
"That conniving Admiral..." Ghes trailed off, thoughts again on Cain who would be millions of kilometres away now; on some other vessel she'd transported herself to from the merchant ship. Or perhaps she'd been on that distant vessel all along, lured the Enzio to the empty merchant ship and created some sort of trap whereby Savin had been injured.
Either way, two members of the Enzio's crew had been possibly attacked. Cain would have to answer to both those charges. It was grounds for court martial, if she could be found, brought to heel by the brass who incidentally, he was sure, had among them people who were Cain's allies, who trusted her implicitly or were more than willing to shield her or deflect blame from her.
He didn't quite know what to make of her anymore... That pale-faced, steely-eyed Federation diehard, who would do anything and everything to ensure its continuation into the far future, in whatever form that would be. He'd agreed with her once, at least on a few aspects. He was her 'spy', the one to keep Jackson in line. But in showing her hand as a traitor to the principles of the Federation that she unwaveringly served, she had only drawn Ghes and Jackson, and their philosophies closer together.
Patrizia Cain, the once mighty officer who may now fall to nothing. One thing that could be said for her... She'd backed her own officers, the 'loyal' officers, to the hilt. And that was something Ghes feared Starfleet lacked. He feared that the flimsy nature of the Federation, its mission of peace and mutual understanding, and the vagaries of its morality might, eventually, lead to its downfall.
Meanwhile, Negotiations Planet...
The Kasan'thar were preparing to depart. With news of the diffused situation in the outer system and the departure of the two cruisers the Kasan leader had left as guard and insurance, they saw no further reason to stay except to sign the treaty. A few select delegates remained behind in the main chamber where Vice Admiral Jackson continued to regale them with the Federation's values and her insistence that the UFP would never sanction an aggressive action against them.
And yet things were on shaky ground, where in this very system an apparently rogue Admiral had attempted to start a conflict. If the Federation were so committed to peace, why had they allowed such lax security that a warmonger had a chance to spark a conflict?
<Tag Jackson, Kaylana?, Paikea?>
OOC: Ok that concludes things folks. I will be leaving this thread open so that Admiral Jackson may conclude the peacetalks on the planet if she so wishes. Anything the other Rainier crew on the surface would like to contribute would be welcome also. It's been an enjoyable mission - if a little rocky with command personnel changes! - and I hope we can collaborate sometime in the future.

Jackson held the signed treaty in her hand, it wasn't perfect they had only agreed to a five year none aggression pact but Jackson held hope that it could one day lead to something more permanent. In return for the Federation dropping its objection to the Klingons selling weapons to the Kasan'thar they had agreed to respect Federation borders.
**USS Rainier - Ready Room**
Stacey wasn't surprised that Cain had managed to slip the net, although she had no doubt she would turn up again although unlike others she didn't believe her career in Starfleet was over. Cain no doubt had plans for that.
She took a deep breath as she placed the last few of her personal items into a carry bag. She felt incredibly drained energy, the last few years had taken there toll, old injuries bothered her more and headaches had become more frequent. Starship duty had never truly suited her, the Captains chair had not been a goal. So she had few doubts that resignation was the best choice for her now, it would give her the time to see her grandson more often than every few months, since becoming an Admiral she had seen her family less and less and to her the rank was no where near worth that sacrifice.
She turned as the door opened. "Kaylana come in." She smiled slightly. "You did good work with the Kasan'thar I think you impressed them enough for me to make some headway." She looked around for a moment and then shrugged slightly. "I heard from Starfleet Command they have assigned a new Commanding Officer, I'm sure they will let you know whether they are coming to the ship or the ship is going to them."
She paused for a moment. "You will be in command until then, I will be taking a shuttle to Betazed." She smiled slightly. "Speaking of which I should get a move on." She reached up and pulled off her comm badge, placing it on the Captains desk she picked up her belongings and added. "If I may Kaylana, when it is your turn to take that off for the last time." She paused for a moment. "Try to have something to go to, don't just be left with a uniform." She took a deep breath. "It has been a pleasure Captain."
**Shuttle Craft**
As the shuttle hatch closed Stacey stashed her belongings and then took a seat next to the pilot with a large sigh of relief, she could almost physically feel a weight lifting. The pilot began to work the controls when he said. "Betazed Ma'am?"
With a genuine smile she replied. "Yes, get me home Ensign."

Lorna heard that Admiral Cain had disappeared. Somehow she wasn't surprised that the other woman had had a get out strategy planned, probably planned from before the beginning. Lorna was enough of an intelligence operative to be very impressed at what Patriza Cain had pulled off, but that didn't mean she wanted that to meet again.
Lorna saved her research and made sure to circulate the information to a few of her contacts. It wasn't that anything would happen, it was that they would be aware and it might help them later.
Lorna could not wait for the Rainer to get out of this region of space. After everything that had happened it felt wrong. Being manipulated was never good.

Tiana was at Savin’s side when the medical team descended upon him, she completely failed to notice Dr Saryn approaching her. "Miss Cet, can you tell me what happened?" he asked gently “One of Admiral Cain’s guards shot him in the back, phaser, setting somewhere above stun. It was technically holographic but I doubt that affects the damage.” She was trying to stay calm and give the information requested but she could not stop the tears trickling down her face or the slight tremor in her voice. "Are you injured in any way? DO you require medical assistance?" he asked
“I’m not hurt. But if you don’t mind I would like to accompany Savin to sickbay.” She was aware that she was talking to Savin’s father and he had to be at least as upset as she was about his son’s injuries but she couldn’t properly absorb that right now.
Saryn rose to his feet, gently taking the Tiana up with him. Tiana saw him tap his commbadge but she could not make sense of what he was saying.
== Sickbay ==
Tiana found herself sitting on a biobed in sickbay, she was still staring across at where medical staff surrounded Savin. She had managed to absorb the fact that she was genuinely as unhurt as she thought she was. In a way it was a bit of a surprise, after Savin had been hurt she had felt as if she wouldn’t have noticed if someone had shot her too. As it was she only absorbed that information because Dr Saryn had been very patient with her. She hadn’t protested the sedative at all.
"You may wait here for news on Savin if you wish," he told her, "or you may return to the bridge if you desire."
Tiana shook her head. ”I’ll stay here. Thank you.” She noted that the tremor had left her voice. That was probably a good sign. Wasn’t it?
She sat in silence and waited. Savin had to be all right. He had to be….
