[Starbase 24]
The middle admiral of the three seated at the head of the room raised the gavel before him and let it fall with a thud that resounded in the large, but currently not very full room. “Let the record indicate that as of this Stardate: 2398.1201 the following inquiry is in motion. Exactly one standard galactic month ago, an explosion occurred which thereafter crippled the U.S.S. El Salvador-B inflicting devastating casualties amongst both personnel and equipment. In accordance with standard procedure in such a situation, this panel will review statements and available evidence to determine if a Court Martial is warranted against the officer before us on charges of negligence and/or incompetence culminating in dereliction of duty”, the Andorian admiral stated dramatically.
Admiral Lisa Hayes, the graying-haired flag officer in command of Starbase 24 which oversaw the area of operation in which the El Salvador’s incident occurred, rolled her eyes at what she saw as ridiculous posturing over what she considered to be little better than a witch hunt. But the Andorian’s basic statement was correct, in that any case of a Starfleet vessel’s near destruction must be intensely investigated to gain as precise a picture as possible of the variables that led up to the disaster in question, and then appropriate steps be taken to ensure that everything possible was done to prevent their repeat. As such she had no choice at this stage but to keep her mouth shut like the Tellarite admiral that completed the inquiry’s trio, and hear what the poor devil standing before them had to say for himself.
The gavel-wielder rested it on the surface of the table and laced his fingers together in preparation after gesturing with an open palm to the officer being judged, “As the El Salvador’s sensor logs have yet to be recovered we have only your testimony to illuminate the events in question for the moment. Do not forget you are under oath as a Starfleet officer to tell the complete truth. You have the floor… Commodore Savot.”
Though it could hardly be further from his thoughts at present as he stood there recalling the events that had damaged the vessel in his care so severely that damage assessment crews had still yet to conclude whether it was even feasible to consider restoring the Prometheus class vessel... it was possible that sometime later Savot might look back on the situation and recognize the irony that these events were coming to a head on his birthday.
(More to follow: though if anyone wishes to post please feel free. The ship's been towed back to Starbase 24 where teams have been working constantly for 4 weeks, though naturally the early priority was ensuring all the crew were safely located and gotten off the ship. In the aftermath of her husband's transport being destroyed only then to have had her children's safety put at risk so soon afterwards, Commander Hope elected to leave the crew and likely visit her parents on Earth or something along those lines.
Not sure what became of Minister Porett and her mission; but clearly the El Salvador was in no shape to perform the task after the explosion. If anyone would like further details to help them jump in, don't hesitate to pm/im/email and I'll do my best to provide them.)
