"Do I look to be all right?" Saryn snapped back, trying to remain as calm as possible. He was nervous, extremely nervous and that was very unlike him. Even when he was under emotional duress, nervosity was not something he usually suffered from. Yet now, he could barely contain his anxiety and sadly he was reacting it off on his crewmates who, he knew, were only trying to help.
The Vulcan averted his gaze and instead fixed it on the furthest wall he could find. Suddenly the pod lurched sharply, tumbled then straightened out again. He felt his body slam back into his seat, then forward into his harnass as the pod slammed down on the planet.
On the main viewscreen, a huge tree loomed up into the view, until it filled the entire viewscreen. The pod came to an abrupt stop and again Saryn was slammed into the harnass that held him in his seat. Breath was knocked from his lungs and he struggled to breathe as he freed himself from his restraints. "Captain?" he managed, once he finally regained control of his breathing.
Trembling, he got to his feet and tentatively walked around, flexing his muscles and testing his limbs. Nothing broken, so far. That could, however not be said for poor Ensign Jones. His broken body lay under the most forward console in a very unnatural angle. Closing his eyes, Saryn turned away from the corpse. "We have to get out of here as soon as possible," he managed, coughing when he inhaled too deeply. He discovered he had at least one cracked rib from the force with which he'd been thrown about in his seat. "Someone may have seen our pod go down. Certainly the ones who shot us down saw us."

Mike had his eyes closed as the pod felt like it was struggling to enter the planet’s atmosphere. The pod was shaking from side to side and then began to glide serenely down towards the landing site. Just as Mike looked across at Saryn their was an explosion to the front of the pod, Mike heard the sound but bashed his head as he thrown violently around in his seat and harness – he felt himself drifting to unconsciousness he was concussed.
Drifting back into consciousness as the pod smashed to the ground upon impact, the impact causing Mike to awake from his precarious slumber. He threw off the harness and felt his head, he had a small gash just above his eye, which was leaking blood but it could wait, he turned to see Saryn walking tentatively and he saw the corpse of their pilot. Mike turned away and held his head in his hands; this was not the mission he had envisaged. Just then Saryn spoke…
"We have to get out of here as soon as possible," attracting Mike’s attention he focussed on the blurry and smoky view of the vulcan, as Saryn spoke again.
"Someone may have seen our pod go down. Certainly the ones who shot us down saw us." The realisation that the pod had been shot down, hit Mike like a tonne of bricks and he darted up out of his seat. It took him a moment to balance and compose himself as he returned to his vertical base. Once Mike recovered he yelled:
“We need to dispose of the shuttlepod, the Mirandan’s cannot know we are here and we cannot allow our technology to fall into their hands – we don’t know what it would be used for.”
Michael paused before continuing giving his crewmates the chance to contribute and to try and block the feeling of pain in his head out.
“In my view we have 3 options, we blow up the pod – have the Challenger fire upon it, we try to disguise it by the tree line,” Mike paused and clutched his head, he had one hell of a headache, stuttering he continued.
“we attempt to transport the pod… its never been attempted and would most likely fail without some hefty and risky modifications on the Challenger – in my view we go for option 1. We don’t have much time, whoever shot us will be coming for us.”
Mike finished speaking and gazed groggily at his fellow away team members, and Andy in particular it was his call as the away team leader and Captain.

"If we blow up the pod, we have no means of getting home," Saryn cut in, rather sharply as he jabbed a syringe at Wallace's arm. He saw the chief engineer wince briefly, while he did away with the used needle and safely stored it in a separate and guarded compartment in his bag. "That should ease your headache," he commented coldly, before returning his gaze to the wrecked pod.
"On the other hand, someone will certainly draw us out if they see our shuttle. We should dispose of it as best as we can." He glanced back at Kirk and Logan, who had remained silent. "Captain, commander, are you both still in one piece?" Pulling his hood further over his face, he pulled his cape about his figure and walked up to his commanding officer.
Then he took a peek at the overcast, and noted the lightning in the distance. "There is a storm coming up. I suggest we decide fast on what to do with our pod, then find us shelter against the storm. I believe this is not one we wish to be caught out in."

Post by Andrew Kirk on Jun 14, 2007 7:38:28 GMT
Kirk’s head pounded from the impact of the crash. He probably had a concussion but there was no way for him to tell; at this point he knew that he had to just continue one.
The downed shuttle pod was going to bring unwanted attention to them and Kirk thought it to be best to put some distance between them and the shuttle pod. If they did encounter the native alien military they would certainly want to know why or how they happened upon the crash site as soon as they had. He knew that it wouldn’t take a military genius to figure out they weren’t all that they seemed to be. There was also the off chance that the Mirandans didn’t bleed either red or green blood.
"Captain, commander, are you both still in one piece?"
“I’ve been better.” Kirk admitted as he held a hand up to his head.
Saryn examined Kirk quickly and seemed to have found something of interest readings. He paused for a second to quickly get a good look at Kirk before injecting him with a substance to dull his headache.
“What do we do about the craft and Ensign Jones?” Wallace again asked.
In the distance there sounded like tracks from an old Earth tank and Kirk knew that time was starting to run out. He didn’t know how they had gotten to the crash scene as fast as they had but it didn’t matter; they were about to be spotted.
“We have to move,” Kirk said as he started to move out as a quick pace. Looking back over his shoulder he say everybody starting to follow him except Ensign Wallace, “There’s nothing we can do for him, now move!”
Kirk led the way into some nearby brush and hit the dirt. They crawled low and as fast as they could to try and find better cover. In the distance Kirk spotted a large rock formation that would give them good cover and also give them a higher elevation to watch the Mirandans Military in action.
It didn’t take the group long to reach the rock formation and when they did Kirk put himself into a position where he could look down onto the crash site. From his position he could see the long streak in the grass where the shuttle pod had come down and finally crashed into a tree line. Beyond that was a horizontal fence with towers running every fifty feet. Kirk now knew how they had responded to the crash so fast, they shuttle had crashed nearly on top of a Military Base.
“What’s going on?” Jack asked from his low position.
“They’re looking at our shuttle pod,” Kirk replied in a whisper. Then he saw something he wished he hadn’t. Two soldiers pulled Jones body from the wrecked shuttle pod and quickly stabbed him several times with the bayonets on the end of their rifles to make sure he was dead, “They found Ensign Jones.” Kirk simply said.
This simple statement brought the rest of the crew up to have a look. He watched as two more soldiers now dressed in what looked like chemical suits putting Jones’ body into a sealed container and then they packed it up into a heavy looking truck. It was then that he noticed something different. These men didn’t look anything like they did. Their complexion was much lighter than the soldiers, Kirk hoped that these were just the soldiers in war paint, but it didn’t seem to be the case since more than one of the soldiers had darker complexions than the away team.
Kirk’s head was still hurting but it seemed much more manageable since getting the injection from Saryn. He needed to start thinking about how they were going to contact Challenger and plan their escape from the planet. He knew that Starfleet wasn’t going to like them leaving with out the information they were looking for, but in Kirk’s mind the mission had already become a complete disaster.
Heavy equipment started to move out from the military base and it looked to Kirk as if they were going to remove the shuttle pod from the scene. It reminded him of the many stories he had read about in history books of the late 1950’s and the ways they handled UFOs. It then dawned on him that to the Mirandans he was an alien from another planet, and to them that was something to fear.
“We need to move out quietly,” Kirk said, “I think there is a river just down on the other side of this hill. Saryn I want you to take point.”

"Point, sir?" Saryn querried, casting a confused look on his commanding officer. "I fear I do not understand this term." He understood however that there was no time to explain, they needed to hide or run for their lives.
The Vulcan chanced a look over his shoulder and watched the Mirandans carry the body of the unfortunate Ensign Jones off, then watched with growing horror as they started to tear their pod apart. "It will not be long before they come looking for us," he pointed out, "and we shall not be safe here."
Saryn halted, letting Logan catch up with him. The communications chief seemed to have trouble keeping up. Kirk looked to be of sound mind and still able bodied and Wallace looked a little less pale than before, but Logan still looked dazed. "We may need to take a break very soon," Saryn called up to Kirk, "I need to examine Commander Logan, he does not look well."
Slipping an arm around Logan's waist, the Vulcan continued to support the Human officer. "Lean on me commander, I can take your weight quite easily," he offered, for once not worried about the no-touch protocol for Vulcans. There was, at present, nothing that could disturb him more than their current predicament. He still suffered his own headache but he paid no heed to it, putting the well-being of his crewmates before his own.
With Logan leaning so close to him, Saryn had to actively suppress the odd cravings he started having ever since his own transformation. He made a point of fixing his gaze on the trees ahead of them, while he dragged Logan onwards. The storm was closing in on them really fast and strong gusts of wind started pulling at their clothing. Saryn's cape violently fluttered about his body, and pulled the hood from his head, revealing his pale white complexion and pointed ears as the wind danced through his hair.
With one hand, he pulled his hood back up, while with the other he continued to support the communications chief. "We need to find shelter!" he called over the roaring wind, shielding his face against the now hard falling rain. Within minutes, the four officers were drenched onto their skin, their progress towards the forests increasingly slowing. "We must hurry!" Saryn called, chancing another look over his shoulder.
The Vulcan halted, easing Logan down. "Wake up commander!" he ordered, sharply striking Logan on his cheeks. "Stay with us!" He watched as Logan opened his eyes. "Very good sir. Now, recite the first rules of First Contact to me. That is an order commander. Recite the first rules of First Contact!" He pointed at the closing tank. "We may need them. We are hidden from view so far, and hopefully the rain will wash away our tracks, but I do not believe we should hope for that. We do not know how intelligent these people are...or how xenophobic."

Kirk walked slowly and carefully through a tree line. Behind him, Saryn did his best to support Jack, as he was still not as able bodied as the rest of them.
"Wake up commander!" Kirk heard Saryn call out.
This brought his attention as well as Mike’s back onto them. With the rain starting to pour it was about time they started looking for a place to call it a night. While Saryn did his best to keep Jack wake and able to move, Kirk scouted out ahead.
As he walked he found this area to remind him of his childhood. He remembered going on long walks through the local woods with his uncle and brothers during family holidays. He remembered how he would dream about wondering what it was like on other worlds and how different they must be. Kirk then found it funny now that he was exploring new words and civilizations on how very similar some planets and civilizations truly are.
Voices stopped Kirk in his tracks. He knelt down and waited until they passed. Peering beyond the tree he could see up a small hill a fire burning and what looked to be a house. Moving slowly, Kirk crawled on the wet and muddy dirty until he was nearly at the top of the hill and able to look over. Just in front of him was a single house, it was dome shaped with several small windows. He could see people moving in and around the house but other than that he wasn’t able to see anything else.
More voices were heard just before a single figure came walking out of the house. The bright light from the interior of the house caused a single ray of light to beam out into his direction and consequently gave away his position. The figure stood in shock and stared at Kirk before rushing back into the house to cause a commotion.
Time to go, Kirk thought. He wasted no time in picking himself up and sliding back down the hillside. As soon as he was back down near a tree at the bottom of the small hill he paused to look back up. He could see a flashlight beaming from the top of the hill down in his general direction. He paused and did the best he could to stay still as the light beam passed over the top of him.
Kirk could feel his heart racing as the light passed him by and move onto some moving tree leaves in the wind. He could hear the voices talking back and forth before going quiet. He could only assume that they had given up the search. Kirk waited a few seconds before slowly pushing himself up off the wet ground. Just as he was about to his feet he heard the sound of what reminded him of an old shotgun cocking.
Kirk turned around slowly and found himself face to face with what appeared to be a man with a weapon pointed at him. Slowly, Kirk raised his hands in surrender, hoping that it was the same on this world as it was back home.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Leaving the Shuttlepod ~~~~~~~~~~~~~Mike felt shellshocked, like troops back on earth in the 19th century who suffered from shellshock after being pounded by artillery fire constantly. Mike paused and looked over at Ensign Jones oblivious to the scenes around him. The Mirandan’s were closing in on their position with what sounded like a tank. Just then Andy shook Mike out of his frozen stance, “There’s nothing we can do for him, now move!” Andy yelled as they made their way out of the shuttlepod. Mike ran back inside to grab his rucksack and he felt like he heard Ensign Jones saying something, but he could not stay behind to check he had to move. Mike hoped he had just imagined it. After fleeing for cover and crawling along the dirt and small grassy area, Andy spotted a rock formation from an elevated position which would provide them with excellent cover and a good vantage point. Once atop the rocky formation, Andy crawled over to the edge of the rock face to observe the Mirandans as they found their shuttlepod. “What’s going on?” Asked Jack, Andy kept his focus on the Mirandan military investigating the shuttlepod and simply replied “They’re looking at our shuttle pod,” a couple of moments later Andy added “They found Ensign Jones.” Mike could not help but feel guilty… was Jones still alive had he said something to him. Mike just didn’t know but the look of guilt and anguish was clear on his face as no-one spoke as if silently paying tribute to Jones. As Andy observed the Military towing the shuttlepod away, he added “We need to move out quietly, I think there is a river just down on the other side of this hill. Saryn I want you to take point.” The vulcan questioned what exactly point was, but there was no time for explanations and the group moved out. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To the River ~~~~~~~~~~~~~Andy led the way towards the river, as Saryn and Jack were lagging behind somewhat Mike turned to find out what was happening. As he turned Saryn called to Andy: "We may need to take a break very soon, I need to examine Commander Logan, he does not look well." Andy signalled with his hand for the group to pause, as Saryn examined Jack he pulled him up and began to take his weight by wrapping Jack’s arm around his waste. Jack wasn’t looking good and Mike was worried, he turned to Andy and gave a concerned look – the mission was not going according to plan by any means. They had only moved about another 100 metres before Saryn began more concerned for Jack, and placed the Commander down on the ground. Mike halted and turned as Saryn yelled "Wake up commander!" repeatedly as Jack began to stir and show signs of being responsive. Mike noticed Andy slip away to scout the area ahead without telling anyone, Mike was hardly going to let his Captain run off on his own the group should not split up. Turning to Saryn and Jack he motioned: “I’m going to follow Andy, hes gone ahead to scout the area. You two stay here, we need to stick together. I’ll be back asap!” (Jack/Saryn)~~~~~~~~~~~~~ After the Captain ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mike stealthy ran after the tracks of Andy, he noted that the Captain had paused – and was staring down at something just then Mike heard voices from in front of the Andy. There was a lot of commotion and a search light was hitting the surrounding area obviously searching for Andy. Mike knelt down and stayed concealed, rummaging in his rucksack he grabbed his phase pistol and made sure it was set to “stun”. Mike had lost the Captain and the search light had stopped scanning the area. Mike rushed to try and locate the Captain, just then he heard what sounded like metal chinking together just beneath him. As he peered over he saw the Captain with his hands up and a tall Mirandan standing behind him with a gun. Mike had to move quickly the Mirandan was going to pull the trigger he had no doubt of that. Mike instinctively aimed his weapon and squeezed hard on the pistol causing the Mirandan to fall over as the beam hit him squarely in the head. Mike jumped from the ledge he was standing on and stood next to Andy: “Captain, we need to get out of here. I’ve left Jack and Saryn back at the hillside by the river. What do we do with this guy? I only stunned him, he’ll come round soon.” (Andy)“We could take him with us Sir, use him as a bargaining chip if it got to that or interrogate him and find out more about his culture. I know it sounds brutal sir, but look what they did to Jones and that Mirandan was going to fire on you, we are in a life and death situation here.” (Andy)Mike paused as the Captain decided the next course of action, he wasn’t sure what to do himself but then he wasn’t the Captain. Mike still couldn’t shake the feeling of leaving Jones behind, to be butchered by these people. Mike stood over the Mirandan heeped over on the ground and ran his fingers over his phase pistol now safely holstered and for a moment thought about executing him. Until Andy spoke and suddenly shook Mike out of it. OOC: My apologies for the massive post but I was playing catch-up I've split it into 3 sections to make it slightly easier on the eye!
A year ago Kirk would have considered just leaving this alien to die in the heavy rain, but since the actions of several of the ‘alien’ crewmembers aboard Challenger his views on non-humans had changed. Kirk could see in Michael’s eyes that they should return to Saryn and Jack, but something odd had struck Kirk when he watched that individual rush back into the house.
Kneeling down, Kirk saw this man wasn’t wearing a military uniform but rather what appeared to be civilian clothes. He turned over the Mirandans and Kirk was able to see the differences in appearance between the way he looked and the way the away team looked. This man had dark skin, dark hair and two subtle red lines that ran down both sides of his cheeks.
“Go bring Saryn and Jack up to the house.” Kirk said.
“Sir?” Wallace questioned.
“You heard me,” Kirk said quickly.
“Yes sir.” Wallace replied in a less than enthusiastic tone.
Kirk watched Wallace go back the way he had come. Once he was out of site Kirk picked up the flashlight he had seen the Mirandian man use. After a quick inspection he found that if he turned the lamp head it would cause the light to turn on. He rushed back up to the top of the hill and peered over the crest again. He saw in front of him what appeared to be an adult female and an adolescent female standing cautiously at the door waiting for the man of the house to return.
This time he was out of the light being cast from the open door way and consequently he could see deeper into the night. Form his new position he could see what looked like farmland, with several small houses on the outskirts of the property. The main house was large and imposing, with what appeared to be guard towers on each end of the house. He wasn’t sure yet if he should approach, but he knew one thing for certain, he couldn’t leave that man down there.
Kirk rushed back down and pulled the Mirandian man to his feet and lugged him back up the hill. In the distance he could hear Wallace, Saryn and Jack making their way to his location. He knew that they probably wouldn’t approve of this approach but something told Kirk deep down in his gut that these were good people. The Mirandian male was starting to come back so it was now or never.
He hoisted the man back up to his feet and wrapped one arm over his shoulders. With his other hand, Kirk turned on the flashlight and shined it into the eyes of the Mirandans to get a better look at them. They tried to shade their eyes with their hands but it didn’t help. Kirk saw that they too were just like the male, darker in skin color but he was too far away to see if they too had subtle red marks on their faces.
The Mirandian female called out to Kirk as if he was her husband. Her tone sounded questionable and even had a hint of fear in it. Kirk could do nothing but continue to walk forward until he got into the light being emitted form the house. That’s when he noticed a change in the females that stood before him. Their fear and anxiety changed to that of almost near panic.
Kirk walked slowly trying not to escalate the situation. The two females look as if they wanted to turn and run but stayed only because they probably felt their husband and father were in grave danger. Kirk changed his path slightly so he could set the man down and prop him against the building. The two females looked at each other with an odd expression as they watched Kirk do this. They seemed to be confused with Kirk’s compassion toward this man.
Just down below the hill Kirk heard Saryn, Wallace and Jack calling out for him. It became obvious to Kirk that they hadn’t figured on him making his way up to the house.
“I’m up here,” Kirk called out. The two females looked even more shocked as Kirk’s language was clearly alien to them, “Jack I could use your help here.”
“Go bring Saryn and Jack up to the house.” Andy said.
“Sir?” Wallace questioned Andy, what is he doing – we need to get outta here Mike thought to himself but he didn’t say it.
“You heard me,” Kirk said quickly.
“Yes sir.” Mike replied in a less than enthusiastic tone, I dunno what Andy could be thinking but he is the Captain. I’m sure he knows what he is doing.
Mike sped back up the hillside to get back to where he had left Saryn tending to Jack. Mike had no idea what Andy was planning, so he hurriedly made his way back to the riverside where Jack and Saryn were exactly where he left them. They both turned sharply as Mike stood on a branch as he approached, they soon saw Mike running towards them and they were relieved to see him.
“Andy got into a bit of trouble, I had to stun a Mirandan male. He is with the Captain just now but he’ll be coming round soon. Andy wants us to join him.” Saryn and Jack exchanged views quickly as Mike continued…
“Can you move Jack?” Mike asked as he approached the Commander and offered his hand to help him up. Jack nodded in response and Mike helped him up with the aid of Saryn. As they made their way across the river, Mike and Saryn were still propping Jack up to his objections. He said he was fine but Saryn had opted to take no chances.
As they reached the point where Mike had left Andy and the Mirandan there was no sign of either of them. “This is where I left the Captain and the Mirandan, where are they?” Just then they heard Andy call over to them… “I’m up here,” “Jack I could use your help here.”
Mike guessed he must have been at the house he had caught a glimpse of, the 3 of them made there way over to Andy to find the Mirandan perched up against the wall and two female Mirandans standing in the doorway to the house. Mike wasn’t sure what was going on but he instinctively stroked his phase pistol incase there was any trouble – he was going to be ready for it!
"Stick together," Saryn murmured as Wallace sped off before he could restrain him. He leaned over Jack to check on him, learning that he was still conscious, but barely. "Jack, stay with me," Saryn ordered again, slapping the communications officer's cheek. "Tell me about language. When did you first learn you had a talent for language?"
(Jack)
"Look at me Jack, focus on me. Keep talking, I am going to help you back onto your feet now and we are going to join Wallace and Kirk." At that moment, Wallace returned, reporting that they had to join Kirk at the top of the hill. Raising an eyebrow at the young chief engineer, Saryn nodded his consent. "Careful," he warned, "I still have not been able to assess the extend of his injury. He is delerious and I have gotten him to talk about his language talent, but so far he has been unable to tell me whether something hurts or not. I will need more elaborate medical equipment than the scanner I have with me."
He locked gazes with Wallace. "I doubt he would concent to a mind meld," he added, fully aware of the reaction that might bring forth in the other human. Together, they carried Logan between them, up the hill. Once he spotted Kirk with two women and a dark skinned male individual, Saryn helped Wallace lower Logan to the ground, upon which he walked up to the other unconscious male.
His way was barred by the two women when he approached. He locked gazes with each of them. "Let me help," he said, motioning towards the man. "I am a doctor, I can help." He brushed past the woman, ignoring their angry hisses, and knelt down beside the Mirandan. Slightly worried, he looked up at Kirk. "Either our intelligence was in error, or these people are not the Mirandans we were looking for. Their skin-tone is different, but otherwise they appear to be who we are looking for. They too bear fangs, and their skin is also almost translucent, however it is more negroid, than white, as ours."
He remained in a kneeling position beside the Mirandan, carefully probing his body and skull for fractures. "He should regain consciousness soon," he concluded as he leaned in to listen where he assumed the man's heart was. His breathing was steady, as appeared his heart beat to be, but someting was very amiss, and Saryn couldn't quite put his fingers on it. "I do not understand," he said after a long silence, "he should be awake by now."
He could hear the sounds around him, but he wasn't able to respond to them very well. Jack was trying to respond to Saran's questions, but his responses weren't making any since. The fact that Jack could think reasonably well meant that the hit to his head was not as severe.
The muffled sounds of his cremates was keeping Jack focused. He knew that sleeping was out of the question, so keeping himself awake was the number one priority. When he heard Andy's call for assistance, Jack doubled his effort to help.
"I can't hear them," Jack said trying to open his eyes," I need to get closer."
Saryn nodded then supported Jack as they shuffled closer while he kept an eye on the unconscious Mirandan. "I need your assistance commander," he spoke quietly, trying to keep jack's attention. "I want to help the male, but the women will not let me near him. Watch closely and listen to what they say."
Lowering Jack back to the ground, letting him lean against the wall of the cabin, Saryn walked away and approached the male again. The women started chattering wildly, actively blocking his path towards their husband/father and very capable of pushing him aside if needed. Turning, Saryn made sure he still had Jack's attention. "What are they saying?" he enquired, trying to work his way past the women. "Tell them I need to get close to him to further examine him. My scans were superficial, and he should be waking up, but he is not."
The Vulcan lost his balance when one of the women roughly shoved him aside. He hissed at them, baring his teeth before he could catch himself doing so. He slipped and was sent sprawling into the mud. Shaking his head, he climbed back to his feet. "Jack listen to me, I need to know what they are saying, focus on their speech patterns. My translating device is not making any sense of their sounds, I need your help."
Saryn glanced back at Kirk and Wallace, who stood observing the scene before them. "Captain, at what setting did you stun him? If this man dies, we may be in more trouble than we originally thought."
Mike was standing back from the mirandans, he was very conscious of the proximity of the military base and he was sure it wouldn’t be long before the planet’s military would be looking for them once more. Mike leaned on the corner of the house, briefly having his back to the goings on with the mirandan females and Saryn. Mike had been listening to what Saryn was saying, and heard a scuffle behind him, again Mike felt the urge to reach for his phase pistol. He was not sure why he felt the need to reach for the pistol he just guessed this whole ordeal had put him on edge.
As Mike turned he Saryn being roughly pushed by the females, then in a flash Saryn hissed at them and showed his teeth. Very uncharacteristic behaviour for a vulcan, Mike smiled and then paused for thought, this was the sort of behaviour that the team had been displaying aboard the Challenger. The push had caught Saryn off balance and he fell over into some mud by the path next to the house. Saryn was trying to rally Jack as he needed his help translating to give the mirandan male some treatment.
As Saryn spoke to Jack: "Jack listen to me, I need to know what they are saying, focus on their speech patterns. My translating device is not making any sense of their sounds, I need your help."
Mike tapped Andy on the shoulder. “Sir, I fear that the mirandan military could be on top of us at any moment. With your permission I would like to volunteer to go back to the hillside just past the river and act as a lookout, we are going to need warning if the military are heading this way.”
Before Andy had the chance to answer Saryn turned and looked at them both, "Captain, at what setting did you stun him? If this man dies, we may be in more trouble than we originally thought."
Andy glanced at Mike as Mike explained. “My phase pistol was set to stun, here have a look for yourself.” Mike answered as he handed Saryn his pistol, handle first.
Kirk watched as the situation was starting to get out of hand. He had hoped that his gesture of good faith would help sooth the ruffled feathers of the Mirandans but it didn’t appear to have helped. Jack wasn’t feeling well enough to be of any good use and to top it off his translation program was on the fritz. Saryn did what he could to restrain himself but it wasn’t long before the Mirandian woman pushed one too many buttons.
“Take it easy Saryn.” Kirk said. He noticed his voice and the obviously foreign language continued to intrigue the younger Mirandian female.
“Sir, I fear that the Mirandan’s military could be on top of us at any moment. With your permission I would like to volunteer to go back to the hillside just past the river and act as a lookout, we are going to need warning if the military are heading this way.” Wallace said.
“Good idea,” Kirk said, “Just make sure you can get back here in a hurry.” Saryn interrupted before Kirk could finish his sentence.
Saryn checked the stun value on the phase pistol while Jack fought to keep his eyes open. Wallace continued to dance around in an antsy pace as if the Military was going to surge around the corner at a moments notice and Kirk felt oddly at peace with the situation. It must have been because he just had too much on his mind at once to be able to concentrate on one single problem.
The rain continued to pour and finally Kirk reached his breaking point, “Saryn, get these people inside.”
“Sir?” Saryn was confused.
“We can’t stand out here all night long,” Kirk said as he held his arms out and pushed the two Mirandian females into the house. Saryn wasn’t far behind him with Jack under his arm. Once everybody was inside, Kirk and Saryn both dragged the unconscious Mirandian male into the house and closed the door behind them.
It was nice and warm inside the house with a small fire burning at one end. The house had a calming effect on Kirk who needed nothing more than a break from the madness that he was faced with. Reaching into his pocket he pulled out his translator and found that it wasn’t even on. He smiled to himself privately at his obvious error and turned on the small PDA. After a few seconds of booting up it was ready to go and he loaded the Mirandian language and hoped that it would work.
Turning to the adult female he spoke his first words, “We mean you no harm.” The adult female perked up as she was surprised to hear her language being spoken.
“You dare speak to me,” She fired back, “you are not worthy to speak to me.”
Kirk looked around to see if he had heard her right. Jack simply shrugged at the comment; he didn’t know what to say.
“What do you mean?” Kirk asked.
“You are slaves and slaves do not speak to their masters. How dare you defy our most sacred law.”
“Jack,” Kirk said turning to Jack, “What the hell is the talking about?”
“Good idea,” Kirk said, “Just make sure you can get back here in a hurry.” Saryn interrupted before Kirk could finish his sentence.
Saryn was looking at Mike’s phase pistol. Marko was going to need it if he ran into trouble, Andy had given him permission to work as a lookout.
“Saryn, can I have my phase pistol back. I might need it if I run into trouble.” Mike asked slinging his rucksack over his shoulder trying not too sound too bloodthirsty. Mike felt like he was a cowboy in an old western a bit like a gunslinger, as he put his hand out for Saryn to return his phase pistol. He could sense the Doctor, was thinking what Michael was…
Michael repeated his request as Saryn seemingly paused. “Saryn, give me my phase pistol back!”
(Tag Saryn)
This time Mike skipped the pleasantries he felt like Saryn was risking the very survival of the away team. Mike felt it imperative that they knew what the military were doing, as he began to become impatient. He was also jittery due to the rain and flicked his hood up to shield his head from the rain. Saryn eventually handed Mike the phase pistol but he recognised that the Doctor had considered not giving him it.
“Thank you, sirs I will be on the hilltop keeping watch. If you need to contact me whistle twice.” Mike said as he demonstrated the whistle. “I’ll stay out there until you decide what to do Sir.” Turning to Andy.
(Tag Andy)
Mike noticed the Mirandan females give him a look of distain. Part of him wanted to shoot them for what their kind did to Jones but he knew he was better than that. Turning he made his way to the hillside. The hillside had turned to slush since Mike had last walked down the hill and it had become particularly slippy.
Mike reached the top of the hill and pulled his thermal binoculars from his rucksack and hid within a bush to provide him with cover in case the military had snipers or lookouts of their own and to provide a canopy from the rain. It was all quiet as far as Mike could tell and just then he noticed a cave on a ledge in the face of the hillside below.
Mike was keeping a close eye on the road towards the house all was quiet and there was no more motion from the crash site or the military base. Just then he thought he heard a branch snap behind, him but his was nothing. Mike turned to look but there was nothing there, as he dismissed the branch he heard voices from the cave on the ledge below. Mike was curious to what they were saying, and decided to check it out. As he looked down at his translator it wasn’t switched on, in the commotion of the crash landing. He had completely forgotten to switch it on, as he stepped into the cave he grabbed a flashlight from his rucksack. Switching it on the light beamed on an extensive tunnel network, Mike decided to follow the voices which he could hear. He switched off his flashlight, the tunnels were dimly lit with small torches made from wood and lit from the top. Mike saw 3 tall pale individuals with a similar pale complexion to Mike, these were the ‘mirandans’ the away team had expected to meet. Mike was weighing up the decision of whether to reveal himself to them. He overhead their conversation… “Did you see what the army shot down?” “No but someone said it was a space craft…” “Yeah right, aliens!” They all laughed. “Yeah, It was probably just a failed space test. They’ve been working on creating space crafts.” The group paused for a moment. “Did you hear something?” “Yeah over hear” The other replied as they ran to Mike’s position. Mike was staying perfectly still but then he stumbled on a rock and caught their attention. Mike heard the footsteps getting closer and closer, he was going to have to wing it and pretend to be one of their own. He was trying to remember what Jack had told him about their culture, he was going to need it… He his his rucksack behind some rocks and leaned out from the shadows and yelled: “Is there anyone there?” He hoped his translator was working or he would sound alien to them and would be in big trouble. From the next tunnel entrance 3 mirandans appeared, they stared at him for a few moments and exchanged some glances between them and then the tallest mirandan asked: “Who are you, how did you find us?” Mike paused trying to think of a cover story before responding, he was curious to know what was happening to Andy, Jack & Saryn but he had his own problems.
“Jack,” Kirk said turning to Jack, “What the hell is she talking about?”
Kirk watched, as Jack looked a little confused. It appeared to Kirk by Jack’s reaction to the question that he hadn’t come across any information on this subject. Turning back to the Mirandian female Kirk saw the anger that was in her eyes change once again to confusion. She couldn’t understand a word of the English language they were speaking and this caused her to fear the slaves in front of her.
Looking down at his translator Kirk made sure it was on and working before he spoke again, “I don’t understand what you are talking about, we are not slaves.”
“Andy,” Jack interrupted in English, “I think I found something.”
Kirk turned to face his friend who had a PDA in his hand, “The Mirandian social ladder is made up of darker skinned Northern hemisphere people. These people enjoy a much more technological lifestyle where as they Southern hemisphere Mirandans are more dependent on the land. According to the computer I’m linked up with the North is engaged in a heated war with the South. The ‘slaves’ she is referring to are Southern POWs forced to work the rural lands in which we have landed. Sound familiar?”
“Yeah it does.” Kirk replied, “Is there more?”
“Um,” Jack continued to scroll through the information he had just received, “Yeah, it seems that slaves are not allowed to engage in conversation with the land owners and if they do death is the penalty for the crime.”
“I think it would be best if we lay low then.” Kirk added.
“I agree.” Jack replied, “Wait a second.”
“What is it?” Kirk asked moving close to the PDA
“I think we are being tracked.” Jack said.
Just beyond Kirk the Mirandian female moved slowly, picking up a fire poker and did her best to hide it from the sight of the away team. Kirk continued to look on as Jack tried to figure out what was going on with the connection with the PDA. With out warning the Mirandian female let out a loud war like scream and charged Kirk with her weapon raised high above her head. Moving quickly, Kirk pushed Jack to one side and lowered himself and thrust his shoulder into the female’s body knocking her down.
Kirk quickly kicked the make shift weapon aside and pulled out his phase pistol. He then made sure to check that the pistol was set to stuff and took aim.
“Captain, wait.” Saryn interrupted, “We don’t know that our phase pistols wont kill these people, they appear to be overly sensitive to-“
Before Saryn could finish what he was going to say Kirk fired upon the adult female knocking her out, “Sorry Saryn we don’t have the time.” With out hesitation Kirk fired upon the younger female.
“We need to get going.” Jack said.
“All right, lets get going.” Kirk said before leaving the way out of the front door back into the storm. He remembered where Wallace had said he was going to be going and moved out toward that position.
Saryn hesitantly handed Wallace his phase pistol back, after making sure it was set on stun. "Be careful," he warned the retreating officer, "and be wary of the military. I am quite certain they must be looking for us."
The Vulcan watched the chief engineer leave, then turned back to Jack, who was talking to the captain. Oddly enough, the communications chief looked better and it wasn't anything Saryn had done. It did still worry him that the Mirandan male hadn't regained consciousness yet and it worried him more that the female had shoved him aside and had addressed him as a slave.
"Begging your pardon ma'am, but I am no slave," he explained, then included Jack and Andy in his gesture, "and neither are they. We had an accident with our vehicle and were stranded on your land. My collegue was a little impulsive and shot your man as he thought he was under attack." He inched closer to the male again, the woman this time allowing him closer under her watchful eye. "I am a doctor, please let me help."
He hated having to beg to be allowed to help, it was not in his nature to do so, but seeming submittant might actually help their case. He also didn't understand his earlier reaction, only that he was feeling very strange and out of place. And it was making him feel uneasy and jumpy, which was also very much unlike his nature. He followed Kirk out without protest though, wondering where they would be going.
While they walked, Saryn made sure to stay close to Jack, lest he needed assistance. He also worried about Wallace, who had yet to report in and he was closing in on being overdue. "He went in that direction," Saryn commented, pointing towards the local north. "He mentioned something about caves, perhaps we should head there?"
“Who are you, how did you find us?” The group of pale skinned mirandan’s asked again. Mike was no linguist and he struggled with the dialect, he decided all he could do was motion to the army base and try to signal that he escaped. The group began to talk amongst themselves as if to decide what to do with Mike.
“Can you understand me?” Mike yelled, he did not like the road that his ‘lookout’ mission was taking. There was a real possibility they could attack him as the military mirandans had done. To Mike’s surprise one of the mirandan’s signalled at him like he understood him and began to draw something in the sandy floor of the cave… he had obviously seen the crash. The mirandan drew a circle object on the ground and 4 stick men leaving the craft and pointed to Mike. Mike knew then, that this mirandan knew exactly who he was – it was make or break time as he turned to his friends and explaned as Mike looked down at his pda which Jack had tied the communication system into.
“He says he came down from the thing the military shot down…” “What so you’re saying he is an alien?” “I don’t know, maybe the military were testing a craft using us as slaves or maybe they were being transported and escaped. Curiously, he seems to understand us but I have no idea what he is saying.” “So what should we do?” “Welcome him like one of us, maybe he can help us.”
Said one of the other two, the group huddled together to discuss the prospect. Mike was picking up the basics of their dialect but he needed Jack’s input for this. He continued to eaves drop on what they were saying, as the communicator picked up on the word for friend, similar to the earth word. Mike decided just to repeat it… pointing to them and then himself.
“Friend, I am your friend!” Mike yelled! The tall mirandan turned to him “Friend?” He said, Mike smiled and so did the mirandan. Mike had seemingly won their affections. He sat with them in one of the annexes before the cave split into more tunnels and the mirandans made a fire. Mike had continued to draw to explain the events of what had happened thus far and was trying to pick up on as much of the language as he could.
Saryn gazed off in the distance, trying to spot the caves Wallace had said he would've gone to find. Their progress was slow, despite Kirk and Saryn taking turns on supporting Jack. "Captain, I will go on ahead and see if I can find Lieutenant Wallace," Saryn suggested, "if Commander Logan's condition deteriorates, I need you to inject him with this compound. 15cc's should be sufficient, but please take care not to exceed a dosage of 60cc's."
The Vulcan handed the stunned human captain a hypospray and two red coloured vials of 50cc each. Then he gathered his equipment, stuffed it back in his bag and slung the bag over his shoulder, covering it with his long soaked cape. He was starting to feel cold and uncomfortable, though he knew now would not be the time to dwell on being uncomfortable. Right now they were a team with a missing man.
Having composed himself, he strode off towards the caves which he had gathered were in the local north as that was where Wallace had walked off to. He was aware of the fact that he was leaving Kirk and Logan behind, at the mercy of the dark skinned locals should they choose to take action, but he was not going to leave the chief engineer to fend for himself.
After a long time of walking, braving the pouring rain and the lightning storm, Saryn finally found himself standing at the mouth of the cave. Taking out his scanner, he activated it, isolating it to scan for the chief engineer. However, all his scanner turned up was static. "Wallace!" he called, raising his voice as he entered the cave. "Wallace report!"
Before his voice died away, Saryn found himself surrounded by a small group of pale-skinned people. The Vulcan froze, standing perfectly still, fully aware of the fact that he was horribly outnumbered, and he could be killed in mere seconds if they chose it. Quietly, he waited for them to make their next move, all the while keeping his hands clear from his body to show he meant no harm.
Mike was trying to communicate with the ‘paleskins’ as he generically refered to them. They seemed to welcome him with open arms after their initial hostility and Mike was beginning to pick up the basics of the language. As they were sitting round the fire, one of the mirandans turned to face the room Mike had entered from and he nodded at the other three mirnandans. Mike wondered what was going on, before he could ask he heard a voice in the distance.
"Wallace!" "Wallace report!"
It was Doctor Saryn, Mike was sure of it Before he could respond the mirandans ran to confront the intruder. Mike ran after them, but they had an uncanny physical endurance and sped away from Mike. Once he reached the room the 4 mirandans had surrounded Saryn, Saryn had raised his hands to show he was submissive. Mike ran into the group…
“No, Friend!” Mike yelled at the mirandans, “Friend!” the mirandans backed off slightly, but were still on edge. It had been difficult for them to accept Mike and now there was another one. Mike heard one suggest that they were both spies for the military, but the taller mirandan who Mike had formed a bond with quickly dispelled the idea. Mike turned to Saryn,
“Doctor, are you okay?” (Saryn) “I didn’t realise how long it had been, meet my new friends. These people have been explaining their story to me through cave drawings. Apparently they are some sort of underclass and treated as second class citizens.” (Saryn) “They wont harm you Doctor, where are Andy and Jack?” (Saryn)
As Mike was discussing their predicament with Saryn the paleskins were discussing their own situation. Mike was confident that they would welcome Saryn as they had him.
“Doctor, are you okay?”
Saryn turned, slowly raising his hands and folding his drenched hood back. Equally slowly he ran his hands through his hair to get it out of his face, thereby accidently showing the odd shape of his ears. "Yes lieutenant, I am ... okay. Just startled I suppose, but I am unharmed. They did not touch me."
The Vulcan stepped closer to Wallace, dropping his voice to a whisper. "You are overdue in reporting in, the captain got worried so I offered to go look for you. I was the logical choice since I have medical training and you could have been injured." “I didn’t realise how long it had been, meet my new friends. These people have been explaining their story to me through cave drawings. Apparently they are some sort of underclass and treated as second class citizens.”
Saryn followed Wallace's gaze to the floor and had to squint to see the drawings in the semi-darkness. While his general vision was excellent, his night vision was not as good. He could see in the darkness, but not as wel. "Sounds like the 20th Century Apartheid," Saryn muttered under his breath, "and so we took to resemble second rate citizens? That explains the reaction of the others at the hut."
He gazed back at the natives, an apprehensive look in his eyes that only Wallace spotted. His long cape still hid his medical bag, which contained his phase pistol. The question was, would he be able to get at it quick enough should the need arise?
“They wont harm you Doctor, where are Andy and Jack?”
Raising his eyebrows, Saryn regarded the younger man closely. "They are hiding, I hope," he replied, "they cannot move fast since Jack is still injured and I cannot treat him properly." From the corner of his eyes, he saw the Mirandans huddle together, keeping a wary eye on the two newcomers. "Harming us is exactly what I am worried about," he finally added, after a long silence.
He shivered violently and drew his wet cape closer about his body. "Would they be startled if we were to create a fire? If I do not warm up soon, I will fall ill and I have no desire to fall ill on this planet with no proper medical facilities at hand." He sat down on the dry sand in the cave and reached for his bag. A shrill cry from behind made him turn, startled.
The rain continued to pour onto Kirk and Jack hiding spot; Kirk thought for a second that the rain would never let up but he knew eventually the clouds would have to part. The two officers had found a large boulder to sit under to help keep them out of the rain, but the rain had already soaked their clothes right down to their skin and that caused them both to shiver uncontrollably.
“How you feeling Jack?” Kirk asked through chattering teeth.
“I feel like a million bucks Andy.” Jack replied sounding much worst than Kirk.
Kirk looked down at his long time friend and felt helpless. Jack wasn’t simply an engine that Kirk could fix with the right tools, he was a human being and he needed more medical attention than Saryn could provide at this moment. Kirk thought about a hospital but then quickly shook off that passing though. He knew that they would treat him poorly and he could even die if they found out he was an alien.
Out of the corner of Kirk’s eye he saw a red flash and he turned his head to face that direction. Then it happened again and again. Slowly Kirk crept out into the rain again and turned to face back toward the house and he spotted several military vehicles driving up the long road to the house. On one side was an armed man with a spot light while on the other was the driver. In the back seat were four heavily armed and armored soldiers. The soldiers on the woodland slide where shining their flashlights into the woods.
“Time to go Jack.” Kirk said as he rushed down to pick up his friend.
“Leave me, I’ll be fine.” Jack said in a sleepy haze.
“Fine my left thumb,” Kirk said while trying to pick up Jack, “C’mon Jack push up with your legs. You’re too damn heavy for me to dead lift you.”
“Leave me be.”
“That’s it. I didn’t want to have to do this but you leave me no choice. Commander, I’m ordering you to get up.” Kirk said.
“No.”
“No?” Kirk said in shock.
“No. File a report if you want.” Jack said.
“Don’t be stubborn,” Kirk said, “The military is here and we need to move.”
“Then go. I’ll be OK right here.”
“I’m just not going-“ Kirk started.
“If you try and carry me they will find both of us. This way you can at least regroup with Saryn and Mike to come get me.” Jack said.
“This is madness.” Kirk said but then stopped himself when he saw the soldiers leaving the house into the woods. Behind the soldiers with flashlights were several other soldiers who were carrying the stunned family out of the house and putting them into what looked like a ambulance.
“Fine.” Kirk finally gave in. He rushed back under the rock and pressed the hypospray to Jack’s neck and gave him one injection for the road, “Don’t go anywhere.”
“I might want to see the sites.” Jack joked.
Kirk smiled before turning around to leave, but just as he did he spotted several branches on the ground. He broke them off and placed them in front of Jack’s hiding spot for some makeshift camouflage. Once he was done he ran down the backside of the hill and tried his best to not stumble and fall on anything.
He could see the flashlights beams passing around him and he hoped that they hadn’t seen him running through the woods. It was then that he noticed they were incredibly fast on their feet. Just in front of him was a cave opening and Kirk wasted no time running into the cave.
Once inside Kirk drew his phase pistol and pressed himself up against one of the walls. He couldn’t see much because of the darkness but he could still see outside and he feared what was outside more than what could be living inside.
"Would they be startled if we were to create a fire? If I do not warm up soon, I will fall ill and I have no desire to fall ill on this planet with no proper medical facilities at hand." Saryn sat down on the dry sand in the cave and reached for his bag.
“They just need to adjust to your prescence it took them time with me too. Just try and get yourself warm Doctor, the last thing we need is to lose you to illness as well as Jack.” Mike replied with a lump in his throat as he spoke, he was beginning to think they may not get out of this. Just then, a fifth mirandan appeared screaming as he arrived from one of the connecting tunnels.
Mike looked up he was pointing to the direction they came from. Mike’s friend from the mirandans neared him and quickly explained in his language, Mike had shown the mirandan his communication device. Mike stared at the device…
“The military are coming!” Mike’s heart sank as he read the message on his PDA. Turning to Saryn, “Saryn the military are coming, we need to find Andy and Jack!” Saryn was clearly suffering from the cold and just huddled himself closer to the fire.
(Saryn)
“I’m going to look and see if they are close to discovering the caves…” Mike ran off and grabbed his bag from behind the rocks. His mirandan friend accompanied him, as Mike neared the entrance he saw a dark figure enter. Mike raised his plasma pistol and pointed it at the figure’s head, and pressed it against the skull. The figure looked like he was running from someone as he hid behind the wall at the entrance.
“Drop your weapon and put your hands up!”
(Andy)
“Captain, is that you? How did you find us, where is Jack? My friend says the military are on the way.” Mike replied as he pointed to his mirandan friend.
(Andy)
Saryn heard Wallace call to him but he was too cold to move. The fire warmed him up somewhat, but his cold clothing was just as rapidly cooling him down again. He kept a wary eye on the Mirandans, who gained confidence and joined him around his little fire. He felt Wallace shake him forcibly and he pushed the young engineer away, coughing softly. "Go then," he answered as he returned his gaze to the fire. "Find Jack and bring him here, we shall be safe here."
He felt something being draped around his shoulders and looked up to see a pale-faced Mirandan bare his teeth in a smile at him. Offering a grateful, but small smile in return, Saryn pulled the blanket closer, instantly feeling its comforting warmth. "If I do not get warm," he explained, "I will fall ill. And if I fall ill, we are in trouble. Neither of you have medical knowledge, and only I know what our readings should be in our present...appearance."
It was taking some effort to focus on his CO's face, the flickering of the fire entrancing him. He returned his gaze to the flames, staring off into them. "I will remain here, where I will be safe. You must go find Jack and bring him here. These people will not harm us, and I feel it is safe to say they will conceal us when it becomes necessary."
He waved them both off. "Jack is ill, he will die if you will not bring him here into the warmth. We must also find dry clothing." He shivered, hugging his arms about him. "I am cold," he complained softly.
