"Doesn't this thing tell you which way to go? Can't it scan for that friend of yours and lead us back to him?"
“Not exactly,” Kirk admitted, “Jack?”
“This way.” Jack pointed with his arm all the while still under Loken’s arm.
Wallace quickly rushed out front, phase pistol in hand. Kirk lets Loken and Jack go behind Wallace and he took up the rear as they walked to another T-intersection with in this maze. Again Jack read over the words and did his best to try and decipher their meaning.
“Stop.” Jack said.
“What is it?” Kirk asked when he caught up.
“This is their shuttle bay I think.”
Kirk and Wallace just looked at each other and it seemed they knew what each other were thinking. Kirk pressed his body against the right side of the door, while Wallace did the same just on the left side. Jack and Loken stayed back while Wallace took two steps closer to the door.
It opened suddenly as the other door had done and Kirk rushed in going to the left side of the room, and Wallace followed him very quickly as he went to the right side of the room.
The first thing Kirk noticed was just three shuttle looking craft parked in a row, along the walls of the bay appeared to be storage bins but he couldn’t be sure. To their right was a large opening and a long tunnel that led to the dark Mirandian skies.
Just as Kirk thought things were going too good he heard loud footsteps along the pristine floor. He paused for a second and raised his phase pistol up into a firing position. A single Mirandian soldier rounded the corner and with out warning Kirk fired the first shot, putting the soldier to the ground.
Alarms sounded and flashing lights began to fill the room, “What happened?” Wallace shouted over the alarms.
“I don’t know.” Kirk replied, “Jack get your butt into that shuttle.”
Kirk rushed to the shuttle and opened the back hatch to let everybody in, “Jack I need you up front to help me with the controls, Wallace cover us.” Kirk ordered.
Loken did his best to help Jack into the second seat that sat along side the pilots seat. Kirk rushed up next to Jack and gave him the look of ‘what next’.

Mike pulled out his pda under Andy’s order, he was scanning – there appeared to be a corridor beyond the bulkhead door that blocked their path. Hurriedly Andy used his key and illuminated the doorway as it sprung open. On instinct alone Mike pulled out his phase pistol, as the figure of a mirandan guard was revealed from behind the rising bulkhead. Mike squeezed the trigger and a bright stream of orange light flew past Andy’s shoulder and hit the mirandan who fell to the ground with a thud.
The cave walls had now been replaced by some sort of alloy with green aluminous characters across it. “What does that say?” Mike asked, Loken pointed out the mirandan characters and Jack pointed out that some of the characters were romulan. The group paused in silence, as Loken asked if Mike’s pda could tell them where to go – Mike allowed Andy to field the question as he was still not convinced of Loken’s intentions. The group were on the move once more and Mike led the way with his phase pistol in hand up until hearing the command to stop from Jack.
“What is it?” Andy asked when Jack caught up. “This is their shuttle bay I think.” Jack replied
The bulkhead opened swiftly as before with a green glow, Mike flanked to the right and Andy to the left wielding their phase pistols. Mike hugged the right wall in the shuttle bay and an alarm began to sound… “What happened” Mike yelled as he saw Andy stepping over a dead mirandan guard. “I don’t know.” Replied the Captain, Mike smirked in humour as the group ran to the nearest craft.
“Jack I need you up front to help me with the controls, Wallace cover us.” Andy ordered. Mike held back by the craft’s door and ducked for cover, holding his phase pistol and pointing to the doors leading into the bay. Mike heard several footsteps heading towards the bay…
“Sirs, we don’t have much time…” He yelled as three mirandan guards ran round the corner, Mike moved quickly unleashes the force of his phase pistol on two of them as the third ran for cover.
(Andy/Jack)
“Captain, what about Saryn? We cannot leave him here!" Mike paused for breathe ducked round the door and caught the remaining guard in the chest with his phase pistol.
"do you even know how to fly this thing.” Mike asked stepping back in the shuttle door for cover as more footsteps began to descend on the shuttlebay.

“Captain, what about Saryn? We cannot leave him here!" Kirk heard Wallace but there was no time to make this a discussion.
Kirk did the best he could to turn the ship toward a large opening that led up a shaft toward the night sky while Jack continued on with pre-flight details.
The sounds of the firefight continued on in the background as Kirk and Jack finished the launch sequence. Looking over his shoulder he saw Wallace ducking for cover inside the shuttle and took this opportunity to close the rear hatch.
"Do you even know how to fly this thing?”
“We’ll find out.” Kirk said to himself, “Hold on!”
With one single command the shuttle jumped forward speeding toward the large opening, “Steady, steady.” Jack said trying to keep Kirk from piloting the shuttle into the walls.
Things began to slow down for Kirk, he could hear every beat of his heart, he could feel every jolt and jounce the ship made as it gained speed and headed for the dark night sky. In those brief but seemingly timeless moments he had managed to pilot the shuttle out of the long shaft and the only thing in front of them now was the night sky and the suddenly growing number of starts. It would only be a matter of moments before they broke out of the atmosphere.
“Incoming!” Jack yelled.
Large missiles screamed past the ship skyward. Kirk felt there was something wrong; they didn’t have enough power to break through into space.
“Jack I need more power or we are going to stall.”
Kirk saw out of the corner of his eyes as Jack was trying to decipher the text in front of him, “Jack!”
“That is the throttle lever, pull that toward you!” Jack shouted.
Kirk reached down and pulled the throttle back to full and suddenly he could feel the power of the shuttle thrusting them beyond the upper atmosphere and into space.
“Open a channel to Challenger.” Kirk said.
“Already on it.” Jack replied.
“Look.” Wallace said as he pointed out the starboard side window.
Kirk watched as two Romulan warships decloaked in an attack angle toward them. Just in front of them the Challenger suddenly appeared from the shadow side of Mirandan’s closest moon.
“This is Lieutenant Stevens sir you are cleared to dock.” Kirk heard over the COM.
“Roger.” Kirk replied.
He could feel the sweat starting to pool up on his brow. The Challenger was closer to them than the Romulans were but the docking process was going to be leave Challenger in a bad situation. He had never docked with a starship in the middle of a battle and Kirk knew that today was not the day to start trying new things.
“They’re getting closer.” Wallace said.
“Ten seconds.” Jack called out.
Kirk rushed to complete the docking process when suddenly Wallace called, “Torpedoes!” Kirk looked over and saw three torpedoes heading on target toward them. He knew they weren’t going to make it.
The small shuttle exploded as each of the torpedoes smashed into the shuttle. The Challenger began to come about in an aggressive attacking pattern as if to avenge their fallen Captain.
Kirk found himself lying on the transporter pad along side Jack, Wallace and Loken. Lt. Commander Watson stood over them at the transporter controls, “It’s good to have you back sir.” She said.
“Mike, get down to Engineering we are going to have a fight on our hands.” Kirk said just before Challenger rocked from being hit by phaser impacts, “Watson, escort Loken and Jack to sickbay.” Kirk ordered before rushing off to the bridge.

Without warning the shuttle door slammed closed as Mike had ducked for cover, turning to face the front of the shuttle and its viewscreen, he watched as Andy guided the craft through some sort of launch tube and out of the shuttlebay and towards the sky. The craft seemed to struggle to break through the upper atmosphere as weapons fire flashed past the shuttlecraft. Mike gazed through the side window in the craft and spotted two romulan warships approaching their craft at high speed.
“Look.” He yelled as Andy and Jack viewed the crafts, Loken stood up to look, Mike imagined this must have been a hell of a lot for Loken to take in.
“I’ve never seen anything like it…” he began
“They’re getting closer” Mike interrupted. “Torpedos” he yelled they weren’t going to make it as he felt the familiar sensation of the transporter. Mike opened his eyes to find the group on the transporter pad back on Challenger. Mike always found being transported to be disorientating, when Andy’s word snapped him out of his groggy state;
“Mike, get down to Engineering we are going to have a fight on our hands.”
With that Mike sped for the door, “I’m on it Sir” he called back as he left the transporter room for Engineering. Passing crewman as he sprinted wondering why they were staring he remembered he still looked mirandan. Reaching main engineering he found his engineers running from side to side maintaining the reactor coolant levels, antimatter induction and deuterium induction into the core. Mike got a few odd glances from his engineers until they realised who he was and they smiled pleased to see their new Chief was back in one piece.
Mike walked over to Ensign Riggs, “Report” He instructed.
“Its good to have you back Sir, the warp core is stable and engines are 100 percent operational.” Riggs replied
“Its good to be back Neil, now we’re going to be called upon we have two hostile vessels off to starboard, so we need to prepare for damage.” “What is the status of the hull plating?” Mike asked
“Again sir, hull plating is operational and at 100 percent. We feared the worst when you did not return Sir, what happened.” Riggs replied
“I’ll tell you all about it once the imminent fire fight is over. I must inform the Bridge.” Mike answered running to the comm. panel on the wall and pushing the button to speak as the red claxon began to sound across the ship.
“Engineering to Bridge, the engines are ready and standing by and hull plating is at 100 percent. What's the status on those ships?”

"Captain, I don't want to, I can help on the bridge," Jack said trying to fight off Watson.
"Jack not now!" Andy replied," get yourself down to sickbay now!"
"Come on sir," Watson said as he hurried Jack and Loken towards the door. Jack was not going to argue with him as he began to stumble only to be helped by Loken.
"Thank you," Jack said realizing he didn't know the man's name.
"Loken, your friends were very worried about you," Loken said as he was escorted to a different part of sickbay.
"Commander where does it hurt?" a nurse asked before Jack finally collasped from his stomach wound.

"Commander?" Genevieve Martinez glanced from the now unconscious communications chief to the pale Mirandan. "Some of your friends were here earlier," she commented, "a woman named Vespis, a surgeon named Tigis and a child whose name I didn't catch."
"Numike," Loken responded, leaning on the bed Logan was lying on. "I am called Loken and I am the leader of my clan. Where are Vespis and Tigis now?" He looked around for Saryn, assuming Numike wouldn't leave his side, but didn't see anyone that even remotely resembed his odd stranger friend.
"They've gone back down," Martinez explained as she tended to Logan's abdominal wound. "Help me with him would you please? You're not squeamish about blood are you?"
Loken shook his head and helped her remove Logan's uniform jacket and under shirt, deftly cutting through the fabric with the metallic sharp tweezer-like tool the nurse handed him. "I have seen blood, more than my fair share of it," he admitted, "and some was caused by my own doing. I assume you can't tell me where Saryn is?"
"Saryn transported down with your friends," Martinez answered as she continued to clean the injury and apply a generator to it so the wound would close. She hoped Logan would have no qualms about using this technology as the doctor preferred more classical methods, especially if a person was prone not to do as a doctor told him to do. "He said he needed to look for his friends. I see that now you all are back, Saryn should probably be walking in here any minute."
"Saryn didn't come back with us," Loken said as he helped her dress the wound with bandages, "Lieutenant Wallace even asked if we shouldn't wait for him. We didn't know he had come back to the ship and had gone down again. And I don't think your captain even knows this as we speak."
Martinez glanced up at Watson who still stood a few paces away. "You didn't tell the captain?"
Watson shook her head. "Didn't have the time. If you clear Mr Loken here, I'll take him up to see the captain and tell him that Saryn is still on the planet, but in a better shape than they had left him behind in."
Several minutes later, Loken and Watson came running onto the bridge. "Saryn has been aboard but has gone back to look for you," Watson called as they entered, "he's with three Mirandans, and is no longer looking like a Mirandan. Nurse Martinez says that though he appears to be well, he's a long shot from it. He's not in danger of dying now, but he's still weak enough to have a relapse. Martinez urges you to find him, and wonders why you left him behind in the first place."
Loken shot her a surprised glance. "You couldn't have known he had been saved," he told Kirk, "there is no fault on your part. However, with these....Romulans attacking, how soon can we get him back and how soon can I go home?"

“Acknowledged,” Kirk replied to Wallace’s status report, “Helm, bring us about.”
Kirk left the COM open so Wallace could hear what was going on down in Engineering just in case he needed up to date information.
“Weapons charged, and torpedoes are ready.” Reported the Ensign manning the Armory console.
Kirk watched the main view screen and saw as the two Birds of Prey moved into a head on attack pattern. Kirk sat down in his chair and braced for the impact that was to come. His heart was racing at the idea of being forced into a head on fight with two ships; Kirk was sure the Challenger could hold its own against one but two would truly test her strength.
“They’re firing!”
“Hold course.” Kirk ordered.
The bridge shook as the Challenger absorbed the two phaser impacts against her hull, “Return fire.” Kirk ordered right as the two Romulan ships reached point blank range. Two powerful shots fired from Challenger’s phase cannons and impacted against the forward most ship causing her to break off.
“Minimal damage.”
Before Kirk could give the order the helm officer had rolled the Challenger around and behind the fleering Romulan ship. A slight smile grew on his face as he felt proud of how well the crew was working and reacting with minimal orders being given. Just as they got into a good firing position they shook from several more impacts, this time from the rear.
“We’ve sustained moderate damage sir.”
“Fire on that Romulan ship and break off. We need to put some distance between us and them.” Kirk ordered.
“Aye sir.” The helm officer said.
Several short phase canon bursts hit the Romulan ship followed by two dead on torpedo hits. The running Romulan ship lost one of its nacelles and began to drift in an out of control manner. Just as Kirk had ordered the Challenger banked hard and pulled off the attack but the Romulan ship continued to follow its prey.
“Fire rear torpedoes.” Kirk ordered.
Two loud sounds reverberated through out the ship as the torpedoes launched into battle. Kirk waited for the status report but after a few moments the armory officer announced that they missed their target. Kirk’s mind began to try and focus on what to do next; he knew they had taken damage but it probably wasn’t enough to force them to retreat, not yet, these Romulans were not going to get the best of him.
Several more impacts caused consoles on the bridge to short out, a few crew members were burned by this sudden surge. Kirk pressed his COM button on his chair, “Medical emergency to the bridge.”
“Sir, hull plating is down, and weapons heavily damaged.”
“Helm, plot a course to the nearest outpost, maximum warp.” Kirk ordered.
“What about Saryn?” Somebody called out.
“What about him?” Kirk asked.
“He went down to the surface to find you.”
Kirk sat thinking for a second. He couldn’t leave a crew member behind, especially Saryn. As he thought about his next move the Romulans reminded Kirk that they were still back there.
“Sir, we can’t take more of this.”
“Helm, get us out of here!” Kirk finally ordered.
The Challenger moved swiftly into a new direction and just as she finished her move the stars began to stretch all around the newly formed warp bubble. The Challenger disappeared leaving only a single flash in the distance. Around Kirk the bridge crew sat in silence with only the popping and snapping sounds of exposed electrical wires to break up the silence.
To his left two medical crewmen had made their way to the bridge and started to treat the wounded. Kirk watched from what felt like a distance to him, but he was still sitting in his chair only a few feet away. His mind felt as if it was drifting but what he was really thinking about was one man, Saryn. Kirk had never expected to leave anybody behind, especially one that he had come to befriend, as best as a human could befriend a Vulcan.
“I’ll be in my ready room.” Kirk said, “Inform me when we arrive at the outpost.”
“Aye sir.”

meanwhile:
Saryn and his companions had taken shelter in one of the many caves that ran underground on Miranda. The four of them were dressed in dark green capes with hoods that would cast a shadow over their pale faces. Even though Saryn had receiveded the much needed blood transfusions, he still looked extremely pale. At the moment, he would pass for a Mirandan without much trouble, even though he was now back to his normal Vulcan appearance.
The Vulcan had fitted a respirator over his face to help him breathe more easily. He didn't want to suffer from his earlier illness again and at least the air from the respirator was dry and safe for him to breathe. He also had taken sufficient medications, should he weaken again. Against all orders, he'd gone down planet again, to look for his crewmates. Unknown to him, they had already returned to the ship and he was now left behind and at the mercy of his friends.
"Come with us," Vespis urged as she and Tigis hurried through the mazes, "the darkskins can find us here, we must hurry. Farther along, they can't find us. We'll be safe there."
Saryn followed without argument, holding on tightly to Numike's hand. The girl had insisted on holding on to it, despite the slight discomfort it caused her strange friend. Saryn worried that the girl might have attached herself to him too much, especially since she appeared to be an orphan. Together, they hurried along, their capes fluttering around their legs and billowing out behind them.
Gasping for breath, Saryn reached for his phase pistol, wanting to be prepared for the worst. "How much further?" he called ahead.
"Not far," Tigis promised, "we'll be safe once we cross that corner."
Except, when they did cross the corner, they were met by masked indivuduals, carrying very dangerous looking armaments. "Are we?" Saryn asked, raising an eyebrow at the startled Mirandan. "I would say this is quite the opposite of safe." He pushed Numike behind him in an attempt to protect her. He saw Tigis do the same with Vespis, though the woman would have none of it.
"Let us pass," she demanded, "we are of Clan Doumen and we are free Mirandans."
The masked persons stood perfectly still, aiming their weapons at them, obviously having no intention of letting them pass. Saryn did the most logical thing he could come up with: he tossed his weapon aside, hearing it clatter against the rock face. In turn, one of the masked men motioned with his weapon. "We have to follow them," Saryn interpreted, "but I have no intention to." He feigned a stumble even as he got out his hypospray with strong sedative. As he stumbled, he pressed the hypo against the man's shoulder. Before the second could respond, Tigis had dived for the phase pistol and tossed it to Saryn who caught it expertly and pressed the trigger. The second male slumped down without a sound.
"I suggest we make a run for it," Saryn remarked dryly as he picked up Numike and broke into a run. Several minutes later, they had to stop as the Vulcan was starting to feel dizzy and breathless. He tossed his communicator to Tigis. "Try and contact Challenger," he urged.
Tigis nodded and flipped the device open, twisting the dial to get a connection. "Hello Challenger, this is Tigis. Come in Challenger, we're in trouble!"

Kirk sat down at his desk and saw the pile of PDAs sitting there waiting for him. The PDA on top of the pile was marked urgent and it was signed, Admiral Gardner. Kirk read the text on the larger monitor and he was surprised at the level of worry Gardner’s words had at the sudden radio silence of the Challenger. He knew once they cleared this sector he would sent out a communication but he didn’t want to risk being jumped by Romulans with this much battle damage.
“Admiral,” Kirk started his message to Admiral Gardner, “Challenger has suffered battle damage while trying to escape the Mirandian sector, and we are on route back to the Vulcan space station for repairs and supplies. Kirk out.”
Kirk sent the message and turned off his computer monitor. He sat there looking out at the window and watched the star fly by. He wondered if he would tell Gardner about Saryn, either way Kirk was determined to go back and retrieve Saryn from the surface.
“Captain we are ready for you in sickbay.” Kirk heard in his ready room.
“I’ll be right down.” Kirk replied.
Kirk shifted his weight and happened to notice his face in the mirror. He sat there looking at this pale face that was before him. He thought that he would be able to at least recognize himself in the mirror but the figure that looked back at him was a stranger. He was happy that he was going to have this mask removed and the sooner the better.
OFF: This is the end of our mission. I'm going to be posting up the R&R mission probably tomorrow. so you can kick back and relax if you want or wrap things up. Once the R&R thread is posted I'll be locking and moving this mission to the archives.

Mike had endured a bumpy ride down in Engineering as Challenger rocked from side to side from the Romulan weapons fire. Mike watched as Riggs was knocked from the upper gantry above Main Engineering he had been working on maintaining the stability of the warp plasma and ensuring the conduits were undamaged. Rushing to his fallen Ensign, and his friend… “Neil, Neil!” Mike ordered “Are you okay? We need a Doctor!” He yelled at a passing Engineer he rushed to the comm. button and contacted Nurse McCain from Sickbay.
Within minutes the firefight had seemingly stopped and the Challenger stopped rocking, Mike could only assume that they had won the fight. He instructed Lieutenant Scott to inform the Bridge of the damage sustained and the status of the engines. Damage was minimal so he would not need to report it himself, he tried to awaken Neil he was unconscious as Nurse McCain arrived.
“He is unconscious and his breathing is erratic, he fell from the gantry above during the fight with the Romulan ships.” Mike said pointing above.
McCain knelt down checking Neil’s heart rate and responsiveness, “We need to get him to sickbay” McCain instructed turning to the medical personnel he had brought with him who carried him off on a stretcher. Mike followed closely in tow until he reached Sickbay and McCain turned to him.
“There is nothing you can do for him now, Mike. He is going to need surgery and without Doctor Saryn’s expertise – he is a great surgeon.” Replied McCain
“Thank you, let me know as soon as he his conscious.” Mike replied, he had completely forgotten about Doctor Saryn, since he had returned to Challenger. He wasn’t on Challenger, that meant they had left him behind, Mike was still donning his mirandan mask. Returning to Engineering he went back to his office and placed his feet on his desk rubbed his brow and considered contacting Andy to find out what they were going to do about Saryn.
Leaving Engineering, Mike made his way to the Bridge to speak with Andy. The loss of Saryn was grave and he had no doubt in his mind that his Captain would not leave the vulcan behind but he felt he should speak with Andy anyways.
This was his first mission on Challenger and emotions had been running high, from a simple first contact mission to a fight with the romulans. Reaching the Bridge he acknowledged the duty officers and approached Andy's ready room. Pushing the door chime, he waited for the instruction to enter.

The last thing he remembered was being told that Saryn had been left behind. He knew that he must have misunderstood them because they would not leave another one of their own behind. They wouldn't do what they did with Captain Adams, he refused to believe it.
"Saryn, where are you?" Jack asked trying to get up but being held down by one of the nurses.
"Commander please stay still, your wounds need to heal," the nurse said as she continued to remove the remaining reminisces of his costume.
"Where is Saryn?" Jack asked wanting the calm demeanor of the Vulcan healer.
"Commander, Doctor Saryn was left behind on the planet, we were loosing to the Romulans and Captain Kirk ordered us out of the system. We had no choice."
"We had no choice!" Jack screamed,"we always have a choice, we always have a damned choice!."
The next thing he knew he had been administered a drug that made him fall asleep instantly.
