"Getting this mission going is not an option, but Admiral Lin is acting the fool sending the Galaxy to the rift when I just informed him the Romulans are ready to act on any action taken."
"Would your people actually risk war because of a rescue mission?" Ezdreiana asked surprised," would you guys risk the wrath of the Federation and there allies?"
He looked away, fixing his gaze on the wall at the opposite end of the room, avoiding to look at the Trill. "The rift must not be opened," he repeated, "the consequences would not only be for the Romulans, but also for the Federation."
"Tedak if this is true, then tell me what I need to know," Ezdreiana said now begging for the information," i do not want war between our people, but without good cause I cannot recommend what you are asking."
"I am sorry," he said earnestly,"but I have to remember whom I represent, and in this I cannot follow Federation guidelines any longer. I am Romulan, and I answer to the Romulan Empire. They gave me specific orders and I am to follow them. If I do not...it is not just my career that is at stake here." He continued to gaze at her intently. "I cannot allow the Galaxy to depart."
"You cannot stop them, you have no authority to do so," Ezdreiana said, but was extremely surprised when Tedak rushed out of the room and headed towards the Galaxy.
Ezdreiana followed Tedak quietly, but with intent. She could not allow him to cause a scene. It would be an embarrassment for the Diplomatic Corp. No one stopped them when they entered the Galaxy, but Ezdreiana did contact security to meet her on the bridge.
"Tedak wait, lets talk about this," Ezdreiana said as she saw Tedak enter the turbolift.
"There is nothing to talk about," Tedak responded as the turbolift closed. Ezdreiana ran towards the turbolift and waited for it to come back down. Once she arrived on the bridge, she heard Tedak talking to Captain Voran.
"Captain Voran, I cannot allow you to leave spacedock. If the Galaxy arrives at the rift, you might try something stupid, even when ordered not to act. I cannot allow this to happen."
"Ambassador, I wouldn't have got where I am today by doing stupid things. Now my orders are to proceed with my mission, however, if you're worried about what I'm going to do, you are welcome to join us."
"Captain Voran, please let me deal with this," Ezdreiana said.
"You have a five minutes," Voran responded.
"Ambassador Tedak, you have no authority here," Ezdreiana said," please leave the bridge or I will have to order these guards to escort you to your quarters."
"As diplomacy I have all authority I need, including diplomatic immunity. Unless you wish to cause a diplomatic incident I suggest you call those guards off." He glared at the Trill, but held his ground, returning his gaze to Voran. "I cannot let you leave," he insisted, "lives are at stake and not just those that serve on this ship. If you go, destruction is eminent."
"Tedak you talk about destruction, but you have refused to tell me how this will happen," Ezdreiana said weighing her options. Would she cause a diplomatic incident? "Tedak are you going to tell me what is going to happen if we open the rift?"
"I can't," Tedak replied, sounding almost frustrated.
Ezdreiana walked up to Tedak and looked at him. Tedak was known as a strong man with an iron will, but at that moment he was resigned and tired.
"If that is the case Tedak follow me," Ezdreiana said. Tedak didn't move, he refused to move.
"No, I will not," Tedak responded.
"Tedak, please," Ezdreiana whispered so that only he could hear," don't cause a scene, think of your son."
This time, Tedak cast her a sharp glance, his eyes filling with fury. Two firelizards erupted in the air, chattering wildly. "Do. not. get. my. son. involved," he hissed, pausing briefly after each word. "And he has nothing to do with this situation."
"No he does not, but I don't want T'Val explaining to him why his daddy can't come visit him anymore," Ezdreiana said knowing that a parent would do anything for a child," so please Tedak follow me and lets try to resolve this diplomatically."
Tedak's firelizards quieted down and waited for the response of there caretaker. Tedak was still furious, but he seemed to understand.
"Tedak please follow me," Ezdreiana said as she and Tedak left the bridge and the Galaxy.
"Lt. as soon as the Ambassador's are off my ship, engage," Captain Voran ordered.

The Romulan diplomat wasn't too pleased at getting escorted off the Galaxy and he scowled at both his Trill collegue and the two security guards that were walking behind them, no doubt with their weapons drawn. "This isn't over," he suddenly snapped, his eyes ablaze, "this mission must not be allowed to continue."
He watched the Trill for a reaction but by now she seemed most indifferent towards his rantings. Once they had entered the station, he reached out and grabbed her arm, unceremoniously yanking it thereby spinning her around to face him.
Instantly, the guards had their weapons completely drawn and pressed against his back. Tedak ignored them, but released the Trill. "I have no doubt the Federation will not like all trades with the Romulan Empire being forfeited," he threatened, "nor the Empire pulling out of the Qualinost project."
He raised his hand to silence her when she seemed about to protest. "Don't give me that about my son and ex-wife," he snapped, laughing scornfully, "that is low, even for you to take it that far. Lives are at stake, Federation lives, if this mission goes through and I will do everything it takes to see to it that this mission will be halted. Even if that means putting an end to all trades, and all co-operation between the Empire and the Federation."
He pauzed, glaring at her. "You know I would hate to do this, but as a representative of my people, it is what I have to do. Now, if you will excuse me, I have work to do."
Tedak glared at the two guards and stalked away to his office, first putting out a message to the nearest Romulan fleet to keep an eye on the Galaxy and do what it takes to stop them, but without destroying the ships. After all, there was no need to waste lives when in essence they were trying to actually save them.
Next, he opened a secured comlink to Relora. "The Galaxy is on her way," he stated solemnly, "I could not stop them without resorting to violence and sabotage, but I have alerted the nearest Romulan fleet to keep an eye out for them, but without destroying them. It will take time, but I must be able to make my esteemed diplomatic collegues see the logic of my claims. If anything, at least Magellan should eventually understand."
He drew in a deep breath, then glared at Relora. "I will only go so far," he warned, "I will not resort to sabotage or violence, that is not my way. I am most likely going to be in deep trouble for this, and Magellan is someone difficult to persuade but he will be persuaded eventually."

"I have no doubt the Federation will not like all trades with the Romulan Empire being forfeited," he threatened, "nor the Empire pulling out of the Qualinost project."
"Put your weapons down!" Ezdreiana told the security guards. She wanted very much to slap Tedak across the face, but knew that would only worsen the situation. So there she was staring down her counterpart, thinking of something to say, but he would have none of it.
"Don't give me that about my son and ex-wife," he snapped, laughing scornfully, "that is low, even for you to take it that far. Lives are at stake, Federation lives, if this mission goes through and I will do everything it takes to see to it that this mission will be halted. "Tedak the Federation values it trade agreement with your government, but we are not going to be bullied," Ezdreiana said," not by you or anyone else."
Tedak glared down Ezdreiana and her guards, but said nothing. He left and let Ezdreiana and her thoughts alone.
"I want him followed," Ezdreiana said and then whispered," discreetly."
She didn't want to do this, and she would have to talk to Admiral Lin, but for the moment Tedak was the enemy and that didn't sit well with her.
"Lily, get me the Diplomatic Corp on Earth, tell them that it is very urgent," Ezdreiana said as she rushed towards her office.

Magellan looked at Voran a moment. He didnt look particularly but like Magellan he had lived a long long time. El-Aurians were a race of listeners and he realised that it could well be that trait that had caused Voran to consider Tedaks views,
"Its true Romulans rarely tell the truth, and its only correct that the warning is not ignored, that is why I am sending the Galaxy rather than the Copenhagen or Vanquisher"
"You can't blame yourself for what happened al that time ago. You were doing your job - your job as a Starfleet Officer. And as far as the Romulans go the very fact that they seem so intent on us not to go makes me want to look even more." He held up his hand to forestall Vorans reply, "Yes it could be a trap, and yes I will try and get as much information from Tedak as possible, I have our diplomats on it. As for alone, both the Copenhagen and the Vanquisher will be stationed on the edge of the Nebula should you need any extra assistance. So good luck and lets get your crewman back"
***
Relora listened to Tedaks report and frowned. "In that case you need to step up your diplomtaic pressures. There must be something we can use." "What about teh truth" Tedak suggested Relora laughed but didnt reply,
"Magellan is still a Starfleet Officer, we will use him as a last resort only."
"Last resort?"
"Okay" Relora shrugged, "Second to last, there is a Warbird awaiting the Galaxy when she arrives, she has orders to destroy the Galaxy if she makes an attempt to open the Rift."
Tedak frowned, "We must avoid that."
"I agree, and that your job." "The diplomatic package didnt explain much. Perhaps if I knew more..."Tedak left the comment hanging,
Relora eyed Tedak and then relented,
"very well. Its several hundered years ago now. We were testing a new quantum singularity drive. There was an accident and space was torn. It created pockets of ... well sub-space. Each pocket or rift is mobile and moves throughout the galaxy, it has a kind of event horzion which emits a temporal stasis field. Most rifts open only every 109 years but some are more frequent. Our scientists attempted to explore this new realm, we sent ships through and discovered a whole other... reality. There was great potential here and so we sent more and more ships, they discovered a planetoid, it was covered in huge husk like objects. We took one back with us and examined it"
"And?"
"And it turned out to be an egg case. There are things that live in sub-space terrible things. They have a long memory and some form of advanced telepathic communication. The next rift to open occrued near our Colony on La'mat. From it huge creatures, like whales or sharks flooded from it, they desceded on the colony like a plague, they killed everyone, destroyed everything, it was horrific. Of course we blamed it on the Klingons and covered it up. But at every rift opening these creatures have detected the nearest Romulans, sought them out and killed them."
Tedak listened in shocked awe, "But why can't we tell Starfleet of this threat."
Relora shrugged, "The senate has pride I guess, and this is our problem. It would also expose our research into new Singularity drives, either way for now this is the closest guarded secret on Romulus. Do what you must but the Rift must not be opened, Logans Rift is the largest of them all hundred, thousands of them could get out."

.: Morning of Galaxy's Departure :. Stuart gave T'Val a clean bill of health, early that morning. Her color...vulcan color...had returned and she was no longer weak. The only tell-tale signs of her injury was still some scarring that was going to require multiple sessions with the dermal regenerator.
Later on, Stuart received notice to report to the Galaxy with necessary supplies and crew. Immidiately he thought of T'Val coming along. T'Val made arrangements for D'Beren, in case Tedak wasn't going to be available.
Finally they had settled in and the USS Galaxy was on her way.

Do what you must but the Rift must not be opened, Logans Rift is the largest of them all hundred, thousands of them could get out."
"The federation never need to know about our research," Tedak retorted, "yes the senate has its pride, but at what cost if we persist to be foolish? Perhaps a way can be found for the Romulan Empire and the Federation to work together in extracting that crewman without opening that rift."
Tedak sat back, gazing at the Romulan woman, a scornful laugh escaping his lips once more. "You are being foolish Relora," he chided her, "the Federation can help us. The people on this station are very skilled and I am not going to play this evasive game much longer. I am going to tell Magellan as much as I can."
With that, he signed off without awaiting the woman's response and dashed out of his office, to find Magellan. "Admiral, we need to talk," he called, dashing into the Trill's office unannounced. Seeing Magellan busy, he nearly pulled the PADD out of the man's hand to get his attention, but he restrained himself. Instead, he had Nut attrackt Dinas' attention.
"It concerns the Rift," he continued, ignoring the guards that had also come him after him. From the corner of his eyes he also saw Ezdreiana and Saarok enter. "Why, now that we're all here, can we please talk?"
He gazed around the room expectantly. "The Rift must not be opened, it will be the lives of both Federation and Romulan people on the line here. There's an entity in there that might destroy us all, however...I propose we start looking for a way to get Captain Voran his crewman back, without opening that Rift. The Romulans will do whatever it takes to stop the Rift from being opened."

Magellan looked at Tedak, he seemed unusually agitated. "That sounds very much like a threat to me" he stated coolly.
TAG Tedak
"Well facts or not, I do not appreciate such insinuations." He held up his hand to forestall Ezdreiana and Saarok who looked ready to intervene, "So let me explain the facts from our side - We have a chance to rescue one of OUR officers, in OUR space with OUR own means and OUR own vessels. YOUR people have no say in OUR space, YOUR people DO NOT dictate Federation policy or how I allocate resources. As I take it YOU no doubt have Warbirds waiting as a last resort, if you do you are breaking any number of treaties. Having ANY of YOUR warships in our space is a grave grave risk especially given that only this month YOUR people took this station and nearly killed YOUR own son."
Tedak looked about to explode but Magellan pushed on.
"Thankyou for your input, we will factor in this 'risk' into our rescue attempt. Now if you be so kind I suggest you wait in Conference Room 2 where Saarok and Ezedriana will join you shortly."
TAG Tedak
Tedak had turned bright red by now but relented and stormed from the room.
***
Saarok eyed Magellan, "Was that wise?" Magellan shrugged, "Maybe not, but I ve had it up to here with Romulans" he gestured to his forehead, "I need you to go play nice Cop to him. Find out what specific information he has. This great danger could just be a ruse. But something sure doesnt smell right here." "And you" Ezdreiana asked "One things for sure, There are warships waiting for the Galaxy, and I don't want Voran going in on his own. I ve arranged for the Lone Wolf to pick me up and will join him out there. Besides it never hurts to be too careful "

T'Val was glad to be asked along on this mission; the days of inactivity since the siege of Assaillant had practically driven her crazy even though she'd never admit that.
After making sure D'Beren was well cared for (she knew the boy was fond of his nanny), she joined Stuart and together they boarded the Galaxy.
It didn't take long for the huge starship to take off from Assaillant, and both T'Val and Mercy took the time available to stroll around the ship and get sickbay ready.
"It has been a while since I have been on a starship," T'Val confessed, "my last starship duty was on the Jefferson, under Admiral Loskene."
Together the strolled around the ship and unadvertedly found themselves suddenly standing on the bridge. It was just as well, for neither had reported in yet, officially speaking. T'Val cleared her throat to get the captain's attention. "Doctors Stuart Mercy and T'Val reporting for duty," she said softly, but clearly.

Ezdreiana expected Tedak to explode at Admiral Lin, but he kept his tongue. She knew as everyone in the room that it was taking everything Tedak had to not lash out at him. Still Ezdreiana felt sorry for the Romulan.
As soon as Tedak rushed out of the room, a weight was lifted off everyone's shoulder. Ezdreiana was glad that Admiral Lin had backed her instead of a friend, but knew that Tedak's cooperation was necessary.
"I need you to go play nice cop to him. Find out what specific information he has. This great danger could just be a ruse. But something sure doesn't smell right here."
"And you" Ezdreiana asked listening attentively.
As Ezdreiana listened to Admiral Lin's plan, she thought of his orders for them. Would Tedak even listen to them? He was extremely angry, but he still needed to stop the Galaxy from getting to the rift.
"Saarok, I suppose you will be playing the 'Good Cop'," Ezdreiana said as they headed out to find Tedak. There search was extremely quick as they found Tedak seething in anger outside the conference room.
"Tedak, you heard Magellan," Ezdreiana said," he will only stop this mission if he has a good reason to and I think that you have a good reason."

The Romulan whirled around angrily at hearing the Trill's voice, his robe fluttering soundlessly around his lean frame, his feet skidding on the floor, producing a squeeking sound. "He doesn't believe me does he," Tedak exploded, "I've told him everything I know. With so many lives at stake, why would I lie?"
He gazed from his long-time friend Saarok to the new ambassador, and back at Saarok. "You know me," he pleaded, "would I lie?"
Saarok took a step back, the golden queen on his shoulder squawking in protest, her eyes gleaming red. "I am afraid you would lie my friend," he spoke calmly, never taking his eyes off his friend, "not for yourself, but for others. You do what your government tells you to."
Tedak couldn't believe his ears. "No!" he cried, but restrained himself. "No," he repeated, more calmly, running his hands through his hair in utter desperation. "No, I wouldn't. Why won't you believe me. Yes there are warbirds waiting, but by my order they won't destroy the Galaxy. However, there may be more and they might do. Please...the Galaxy must be stopped!"

"No, I wouldn't. Why won't you believe me. Yes there are warbirds waiting, but by my order they won't destroy the Galaxy. However, there may be more and they might do. Please...the Galaxy must be stopped!"
Desperation, that was the feeling that Ezdreiana picked up from Tedak. He was begging them to believe him, though she thought that his words were only meant towards Saarok.
"There going to destroy the galaxy," Ezdreiana said almost shocked at the realization," would the Senate declare open war, would you knowingly start a war that you would lose?"
"I would not....but my government would," Tedak answered, avoiding her gaze.
Ezdreiana noticed his avoiding gaze, which told her that he knew something very important.
"Tedak, just tell us what you know," Ezdreiana said before she took a deep breath and continued," whatever it may be we promise to keep it confidential. If necessary, we will lie to Magellan if the danger is as real as you say."
"I can't tell you," he repeated, almost sounding defeated, "and you won't lie to your goverments, to the Federation. Yes the Romulans would risk a war over this, it is very important that this rift remains closed....at any cost. And I am even risking my own career in telling you this much."

While he was still seething over the admiral's decision to send the Galaxy anyway, it was clear to everyone around him that he was bordering on despair. "I am willing to negotiate over this," he continued after taking several deep breaths in an attempt to calm himself, "but at all cost that rift must remain closed."
He remained silent for several more seconds, and when he spoke next he sounded more like his old self. "To the Romulans, the lives of those aboard the Galaxy mean nothing. We care only for our own self-preservation ambassador, and if that means destroying the Galaxy, then so be it. Now.....when the Federation is willing to negiotiate over this I'm ready to talk...but now I have other things to do. I expect you to repeat everything back to Admiral Lin, whether I want this to remain confidential or not....so I suppose I might as well tell you to report what I've said to him."
His eyes flashed with anger, his two firelizards hissing angrily at the Trill in response, echoing his feelings while he turned on his heels and marched away. He had a son to care for, and other diplomatic items to discuss with various other diplomats, as well as items to complete for his own people.
Back in his office, he sat down in his comfortable seat and sighed at his aide, a young Romulan female listening to the name Ciara had only been assigned to be his aide after he returned from his last trip aboard the Jefferson but she'd proven to be a competent assistant. "And they think Romulans are stubborn people," he complained.
"I'm sure they'll come to their senses ambassador," Ciara answered neutrally as she placed a cup of coffee in front of her boss. "These Federationists are hardly stupid, they value life so much they'll see it your way soon enough."
"I hope so," Tedak answered, managing a grateful smile in her direction.

Magellan paused on the causeway. =^=Go Ahead=^= he said tapping his badge. It was Saarok, =^= Could I have a word before you depart=^= =^= Sure meet me back in Flight Ops=^=
Magellan gave orders for the Lonewolf to continue preparing whilst he met with the senior diplomat.
"You just caught me Ambassador" Saarok nodded and guided them both over to some chairs tucked away from the main concourse. "I take it this concerns Tedak" Magellan continued, Saarok nodded, "Tedak is most determined this mission does not take place. In fact I have never seen him so assertive against us." Magellan shook his head, "But the matter still exists that its our space and our people. We can not allow Romulan pressure begin to influence Federation Policy, especially not after their recent acts of aggression." "That is true, and I agree with the stance you are taking but it seems as if the Romulans will meet the Galaxy with force." "Then they are serious." Magellan paused, "In which case we need to force them to play their hand." "Play their hand?" "Its dangerous but the only way the Romulans will tell us anymore is if we attempt to open the rift." "Open it - but that could result in an attack" Magellan nodded, "Its risky, but if we can force them to explain further then all to the good, otherwise we will just have to press on regardless." Saarok gave a curt nod, "We will continue to apply pressure on Tedak from this end. I will let you depart if you are to reach the Galaxy in time." "Thanks Saarok and good luck"

Voran stepped onto the bridge from his ready room. Commander Tol got up from the command chair.
"News Captain?" He asked.
"I've just spoken with Admiral Lin. He's bringing the USS Lone Wolf to back us up should we encounter Romulans. Apparently they are concerned that if the rift is opened any wider, it could have disastrous consequences."
"But we have to widen the rift if we want to get our man out." Said Morley from his post at tactical.
"Indeed." Said Voran, "Mr Harris, is there any way we could get what we want from the rift without widening it?"
"Uncertain sir, I'll have to check the database." Said Harris, getting up from ops.
"Work with Chief Engineer Hogan, I want your best suggestion in one hour." Ordered Voran as he sat down in the Captain's chair.

Commander Tol took the opportunity of Captain Vorans return to the bridge to check in on the newest crew.
He made his way down to sickbay to find Dr Mercy and healer T'Val, "Doctors" He greeted with a curt nod. Mercy and T'Val had been familiarising them selves with the sick bay layout but now had retired to the office to sit and wait. With them was the CMO of the Galaxy, Janora Prin.
"Hey Tol," Prin replied, "You got an update for us?"
"Sure have." Tol nodded, "We'll be in sensor range of teh rift within the hour. The Captains got us owrking on a way to open the rift slightly so our annular confinement beams can get a good positive lock. Our main problem will be with detecting Logan."
TAG Mercy/T'Val
"Yes we're not sure how to yet, we hoped you might have an idea we are starting to stray in to the realms of biology. That and I was wondering... well what sort of state he might be in - its been hundreds of years... Is it possible hes still alive or are we risking being blown up by Romulans for nothing?"

After introducing themselves to the Galaxy's captain and reporting for duty, T'Val and Mercy first went to check whether their luggage had arrived properly. It had been a brief debate whether they should share quarters but in the end they had opted for separate, though adjoined ones. It seemed like the best option as they still were in the dating stages.
T'Val knew that eventually they would end up staying together anyway, but now they would also still have the privacy of their own quarters. Sharing a few minutes together they helped eachother unpack then took another few minutes to relax.
Finally, the couple headed down to sickbay and report to the chief medical officer of the Galaxy. They witnessed an exchange between the CMO and Commander Tol, and listened to it quietly.
"Sure have." Tol nodded, "We'll be in sensor range of the rift within the hour. The Captains got us working on a way to open the rift slightly so our annular confinement beams can get a good positive lock. Our main problem will be with detecting Logan."
"Certainly his biosignatures would still be on file somewhere?" T'Val pointed out, "was he still wearing his combadge?"
"I agree with T'Val," Mercy chimed in, then raised an eyebrow in such a Vulcan-like fashion it nearly made T'Val smile. "Are you telling us that you're not quite sure on how to go about this yet?"
"Yes we're not sure how to yet, we hoped you might have an idea we are starting to stray in to the realms of biology. That and I was wondering... well what sort of state he might be in - its been hundreds of years... Is it possible hes still alive or are we risking being blown up by Romulans for nothing?"
"I don't know," Mercy confessed, glancing at T'Val to see what she thought on the matter.
"It depends on whether he was left in suspended animation," T'Val suggested, "and whether he was able to gain nutrition from this rift. I would first suggest trying to lock on to his biosignatures, as I already said I would not be surprised if they would still be on file somewhere. After all, Captain Adams seems to have always wanted to put this rescue operation into motion."
Then she too frowned, her thoughts straying so far when Tol mentioned the Romulans, that they sent Yade into a fit. It took several seconds to calm the green firelizard down, after which T'Val exchanged a curious look with Mercy. "I am certain that my ex-bondmate will do everything in his power to see to it that it does not come to a war."

AS Tedak stormed off, Ezdreiana and Saarok stood together in complete silence. It was understood that he needed some time to cool off, but she knew that it couldn't be much. Saarok left her with her thoughts, which at the moment was not such a good idea.
After debating with herself, Ezdreiana decided that she would try to talk to Tedak again. He most likely stormed off to his office so that was the first place that she went. As she closed on his office, she thought if it was the best idea.
=^=Ambassador, please report to Amabassador Tedak's office, I will be meeting you two shortly=^=
=^=Understood=^=
It was now out of her hands, and so she asked to enter. Once she entered there was an awkward silence between Ezdreiana and Tedak. She did not dare speak to him at the moment, for the fear of angering him again. His eyes told her that he was still furious for not believing him. Though she thought that he was angering that he couldn't tell his friends, Saarok and Magellan the truth.
After a few more minutes of the painful silence, Saarok once entered Saarok's. His body language told her very little, but she had an idea what his orders would be.
"Tedak, Magellan has taken the Lone Wolf and will reach the Galaxy shortly," Saarok proclaimed," furthermore, Assailant and all Starfleet vessels will be put on high alert."
This news surprised Ezdreiana a little, Magellan and Tedak seriously believed Tedak's proclamation that Romulan vessel's would be dispatched. The news seemed to alarm Tedak, who must of believed his threat would of stopped the rescue mission.
"Tedak, please tell us what is going to happen when the open they rift," Ezdreiana said," I know you think that if we open the rift something bad is going to happen, but if we don't have proof we can't act on it."

Tedak once again explained that he couldn't tell them what he knew, but Ezdreiana knew that they had to press him for the information.
"We know that your allegiance falls under the Romulan Star Empire, but how is this going to help your people?" Ezdreiana asked clearly frustrated," you yourself have told us that if we open the rift, it would start a war. Is that what's best for your people? Is the secret you are holding worth the millions of lives that will be lost?"

The Galaxy dropped out of warp and cautiously approached the rift. Electric discharges flashed about a swirling vortex at its heart. The discharges rippled out from the rift and into the nebula gases igniting some in to brilliant flashes of light of a thousand colours. Dwarfed by this spatial anomaly the Galaxy sat at what they believed to be a safe distance. They were wrong.
At the edge of the sector a single ship half as big again as the Galaxy crawled from its innocuous hiding place. Her orders remained the same. Watch and protect – the minute the Galaxy made any attempt to open the rift it was to be destroyed. Commander Rekak sat in the command chair and watched the unsuspecting Starfleet ship grow larger on the view screen. “Position us for optimal damage” he ordered, and then paused as he noticed extra sensor information coming in “Hold.” He analysed the data and frowned, “Open a link to Major Relora” The link was established, “Major we have a problem. The Galaxy has been reinforced.” “Reinforced?” “A sovereign and 2 Sabres, they are setting up a tachyon detection net.” Relora scowled, “This will be Tedaks doing. I ll reassign the Devork, Khazad and the Kormid to join you but it will take 8 hours. Hold them till then.” “Understood” Rekak replied and thumbed off the comm. “Helm take us in front of the Galaxy and decloak and hail them”
“This is Commander Rekak, Any attempt to open this rift will be stopped by us”

"We know that your allegiance falls under the Romulan Star Empire, but how is this going to help your people?" Ezdreiana asked clearly frustrated," you yourself have told us that if we open the rift, it would start a war. Is that what's best for your people? Is the secret you are holding worth the millions of lives that will be lost?"
Tedak sighed as he continued to stare out the window in his office, deliberately keeping his back to the Vulcan and Trill diplomats. He didn't really want to talk to them and he was more than sick of being continuously harrassed over this. He had explained time and again that he could not tell them what he really knew, out of fear for their safety as well as his own.
Finally he turned around, his expression haunted. "If that rift is opened it will be at the cost of millions of lives," he finally said, "my people believe that the destruction of a Federation vessel is the lesser evil. I have tried to prevent the Galaxy from going out and had you not stopped me, I probably would've prevented it. It is out of my hands now."
Then his expresion grew more haunted when Lily informed him there was a message waiting for him. "T'Val and Stuart Mercy are on the Galaxy," he whispered, sagging limply into the nearest seat. "What resides in that rift must remain there. My people are willing to wage a war over it, even though it is in Federation space. I must abide by my orders, the Tal Shiar ..."
The Romulan abruptly fell silent and fixed his gaze on the wall beyond Ezdreiana and Saarok. His two firelizards were agitated, and Saarok's queen echoed their sentiment. Then, Tedak fixed his gaze on Saarok, knowing what his friend must be thinking. "No," he spoke up, but briefly hope flared in his eyes, "I'll not allow it. I can't allow it, please don't do this."
Saarok however advanced on him and sat down beside him on the couch. "For the good of the many," the Vulcan murmured, as he placed his hand on his friend's face, securing him with his free hand. The four firelizards screamed in protest, but remained where they had taken up perch.
Tedak gasped in surprise, not having anticipated the Vulcan's move but it was too late now and he was held immobile. His friend was much stronger than he, and more adept at this too. He felt the Vulcan force his way into his mind, and he was painfully aware of his own helplessness. "No," he gasped in terror, trying to fend his friend off, "please don't do this."
Having been married to a Vulcan had taught him how to shield his mind against invasion, but against a former secret service member there was no defense. He screamed as Saarok searched his mind for the needed information.

Voran sat at the head of the observation lounge table. On one side sat Tol, Harris, Hogan and Morley and on the other side, Doctors Prin and Mercy and the Healer T'Val.
He addressed Hogan and Harris, "Gentlemen, what have you got for me?"
"Well Captain," said Harris, "we believe it will be possible to position a shuttle at the mouth of the rift and use it as a relay to transport the lost shuttle out."
"Unfortunately," said Hogan, "there will be an enourmous amount of gravimetric distortions acting on our shuttle if we hold it in that position. It won't last for long."
"Long enough for us to get Jack out?" asked Voran.
"If we can lock onto his shuttle quick enough, then yes. But there would be a certain amount of danger to the pilot of our shuttle..."
"I'll pilot the shuttle myself." Said Voran.
"Captain, I don't think that's a good idea..." Began Tol.
"I've made up my mind Commander. It's my fault he's in there and I won't risk anyone else in this damn rift."
"But Captain," began Prin, "you can't blame yourself for..."
"I'm sorry Doctor but I've made up my mind, I've waited two hundred years for this, I'm the only man for the job. You, Mr Mercy and T'Val will be in charge of patching Jack up should he need it, and, of course, myself, if I need it."

The communication panel bleeped, "Bridge to Voran, we've arrived at the rift."
Voran tapped his combadge, "We're on our way."
The senior staff got up from their chairs and made their way to the bridge.
----------------------
As Voran walked down the slight slope to the middle of the bridge he said, "Red alert." as the klaxons sounded, he ordered, "Report."
Morley, who had just taken his station said, "The anomaly is dead ahead, Captain."
"Onscreen."
The giant swirling mass of energy and colour appeared on the screen. Voran hadn't seen it for two centuries. As he surveyed it with his eyes, anticipation gripped his stomach.
"Sir!" Said Morley, "A Romulan vessel is decloaking dead ahead!"
Voran saw the ship materialise on the screen. Romulans always had a habit of turning up like that when you needed them least.
"They're hailing us." Morley reported.
"Onscreen."
"This is Commander Rekak, Any attempt to open this rift will be stopped by us."
Voran stepped up to the screen, "I am Captain Elarus Voran of the Federation Starship Galaxy. Commander, you are in Federation space, you have no jurisdiction here, your prescence is an act of war, as is any attack upon this vessel."
"That may be so," replied Rekak, "but nevertheless, what I said stands."
Voran frowned, "What is so important that the Romulan Star Empire is willing to go to war with the Federation to protect?"
"That is not of your concern!" Snapped Rekak.
"Commander, we believe we have found a way to complete our mission without opening the rift."
"Explain." Said Rekak, simply.
"We are going to send a shuttlecraft to the mouth of the rift and use it as a relay to transport our man out."

T'Val sat back in her seat, watching the El-Aurian captain with interest. He seemed determined to get his man out and she had the feeling he was racked with guilt over leaving the man behind in the first place. He was risking his entire crew for this operation and he was even willing to wage a war over his one crewmember.
While it was an honourable endeavour, T'Val didn't think it a sensible one. She exchanged a brief glance with Mercy, but for once she couldn't tell what he was thinking on the subject. "Let us hope that you will not need it captain," the Vulcan suddenly spoke up, "is there no way for the shuttle to be sent in there by remote control? Surely your life is not worth the risk, nor are the lives aboard this ship. The Romulans will not care whether you solely pilot that shuttlecraft."
She paused, sensing that she got everyone's attention. "I was married to a Romulan," she confessed, "and they are extremely stubborn people. If they are willing to wage war, then they will wage war. Is that worth the life of your crewman captain? Are you willing to risk millions of lives?"
T'Val only knew what she had heard through the grapevine and she'd been disappointed to hear that this once her ex-husband was siding with his own people, whereas she knew him to be extremely supportive of Federation ideals and goals. She didn't know about the threats the Tal Shiar had made in his direction, about their child and it was even better that she didn't. Yet it had disturbed her that his firelizards wouldn't talk to Yade lately.
"Sickbay will be prepared," she heard Tol say, much to her dismay.
"Of course sickbay will be prepared," T'Val almost snapped back, "let us hope we will not be needed though." She glanced at Mercy. "Stuart what do you think of all this?"

"No," he spoke up, but briefly hope flared in his eyes, "I'll not allow it. I can't allow it, please don't do this."
Ezdreiana didn't understand what Tedak was saying, but when she turned to Saarok it was clear that he had something in mind. As Saarok closed in on Tedak, it dawned on her what he was going to do.
"Saarok, you cannot do this," Ezdreiana said her voice cracking. She wanted to know what Tedak knew, now even more so that he had mention the Tal Shiar, but not this way.
"For the good of the many," the Vulcan murmured as he sat next to Tedak. The Vulcan placed his hands on the neural points of the Romulan and began what Ezdreiana knew to be a mind meld.
"No," he gasped in terror, trying to fend his friend off, "please don't do this." The room was filled with Tedak's screams which made Ezdreiana jump. She of course knew the law of such actions, but she was paralyzed to do anything.
Maybe it was shock or fear, but Ezdreiana could not move from what she was looking upon. "Saarok, please stop this," Ezdreiana begged," he is your friend, don't you see that your hurting him."
Ezdreiana words seemed to do nothing since Saarok continued with the meld. Tedak's cries had now subsided, but he was clearly still trying to fight him off.
"Saarok stop, stop hurting him," Ezdreiana said as she got closer to the pairs. Tedak's fire lizards were clearly agitated, but did nothing as she approached. She was finally close enough to hear Saarok mumbling something. She didn't fully understand, but that didn't matter.
"Saarok stop this," Ezdreiana said as she took hold of Saarok's shoulder. She had to make sure not to break the meld, since it could kill them both. The moment she touched Saarok, flashes of images popped into her head. She didn't understand most of them, but it left her very concerned.
Ezdreiana's touch must of troubled Saarok, since he detached his Vulcan fingers from Tedak's face.
"Tedak, do you require medical attention," Ezdreiana asked.
"He does not, Tedak is a strong individual," Saarok said turning to Ezdreiana.
"Did you find what you needed to know?" Ezdreiana asked not wanting to look Saarok in the face.

Rekak eyed Voran warily, this Captain had something about him, an age beyond his years. And this presented an opportunity.
"Of course Captain you may attempt your rescue but be warned - do not widen the rift, it is dangerous enough as it is."

"Very well Captain... We shall be watching." he closed off the comm and consulted the centurion to his right. "how long till our ships arrive?" "7 hours if they pushed their engines." "Then tell them to push."

On the Lonewolf Magellan sat beside the Captains chair. He didnt know Captain Antilles very well but she had been most accomadating thus far. As a Flag Admiral who could quite easily commandeer the vessel, but he prefered the softly softly approach, she remained in command of the ship and he in command of her.
"Sir we have a transmission for Admiral Lin" "On screen" Antilles ordered, Vorans face appeared flanked by T'Val and Mercy. "Sir. We are ready to effect the rescue. The Romulan Commander has allowed us to proceed." Magellan frowned at this, why would the Romulans back down now. "Very well Captain proceed with extreme caution. Get logan out with minimal disruption to the Rift. We'll support you. Good Luck. Lonewolf out."
As Voran disappered Magellan rose crossed to Tactical. He bent and punched in a few commands,
"Bring us here and have the Vanquisher and Copenhagen take up positions here and here." The Tactical Officer turned to Antilles how gave a curt nod of ascent.
"Okay this is the crunch point... it all rests on Captain Elaraus"

Stuart listened to the debate as he had listened to others many times before. This Capatin was going to do what he could to get his long lost friend from that rift, even if it killed him...a small price to pay the Captain's eyes.
T'Val seemed just as determined to ensure Capatin Voran's safety, as well as everyone elses...war or no war. It was obvious that she was agitated by all of this, for she had called him Stuart in the company of others. Something she rarely did at the professional level, unless she was bothered.
"Stuart what do you think of all this?"
Stuart gave her a brief look and quickly decided to not get involved in this debate. His thoughts on it weren't going to sway anyone's mind.
"Yes, as Healer T'Val has already said, we'll be ready in sickbay to include the setup of anti-radiation forcefields. There is no telling what your friend may have gone through out there, or what opening the rift might cause."
Without looking at T'Val he knew that she was perplexed and amazed that Stuart did not resonate the same concerns as hers. Knowing that his services were not needed here, Stuart rose to excuse himself.
"If you will allow me...us, we shall finish preparations in sickbay."
Without waiting for a response or seeing if T'Val would follow, Stuart got up and left the meeting.

Tedak leaned back on the couch, gasping for breath and working hard to control both his breathing and his fear. Saarok had hurt him when he invaded his mind, and the Romulan didn't know how much the Vulcan had learned. Despite the upcoming rage, he also felt somewhat relieved and he hoped Saarok had learned what he needed.
Yet, Tedak also knew that the Tal Shiar would be monitoring him, even if there were no apparent recording or listening devices present. Being a former Tal Shiar operative, he knew there were several methods to obtain information without anyone else, not even Section 31, knowing.
Without warning, he suddenly swung back his left arm, landing a nice punch on Saarok's jaw. Stunned, Saarok fell back and rolled off the couch, his eyes wide with surprise. His queen firelizard squeeled in protest, fanning her wings in response to it all. "You had no right to do this," the Romulan scowled, his eyes flashing with fury. His two firelizards echoed his apparent anger, but one squawk from Aeris silenced them once more.
"You had no right," Tedak repeated, then turned to Ezdreiana. "Thank you for your concern ambassador, but i am not in need of medical attention." Then he pointed down at Saarok. "But he might be. Lily, transport the three occupants in my office to sickbay."
Seconds later, the interior of Tedak's office was replaced by that of sickbay. "Computer, activate EMH." The hologram appeared but before it could respond, Tedak pointed to Saarok. "Ambassador Saarok had a slight accident in my quarters," he explained, smiling ever so slightly, "and do you have an aspirin for me? The stress of the past few days is starting to give me a headache."
The Romulan noticed Ezdreiana's sharp glance in his direction and he pulled her aside. "Don't you dare tell him what happened," he told her.
