Captain Jon Park sat in his Quarters as he over looked a few personal transfers from command, They were sending him a new Operations officer a Lt. Borthian and a new science officer as well. He knew his new Xo also over looked the personal changes, As he looked out his window he was thinking as a chirp broke his thoughts "Captain you have incoming communique from Starfleet command." Jon thought a moment "Send the call here."
Park moved to his desk and tapped the command on the monitor and saw Admiral Bishop on the screen "Admiral your a lot better then when we last met." Bishop looked across the expanse of space and that was short considering he was only about 2000 miles away on earth as Captain Park orbited that planet. "Yes Captain i am felling a lot better thanks to your ship and crew, Also i am sorry for what happen to Commander Coltrane it wasn't until after i was kidnapped that we found out he was a traitor to starfleet, We still don't know what his endgame was but that's not why i called."
Captain Park was sure this was the call kicking him from the command chair and back to earth and an officer job. "There is something interesting out in the Risa sector. I would like you to check it out." Park looked at the screen "Yes Admiral,Park out"
Park tapped the console and then his combadge "Park to Bridge, Prepare to set course for the risa sector. Commander Helacaan report to my Quaters as soon as your free from your duty's."

Seth was at the rear of the bridge, finalising the transfer of operational duties to the new Ops chief, Lieutenant Borthian. The man was a fine Starfleet officer, coming from the USS Hephaestus and highly spoken of by that vessel's Captain. The new science officer was also being inducted - by the chief medical officer - and had arrived on the ship a mere hour ago.
"Here is your roster for the next day, Lieutenant. This was my typical procedure, briefing with the Ops staff at 0900 after a brief breakfast. Usually I skipped that, not one to stay in the mess for too long. Bridge duty usually through the middle of the day, followed by storage checks and equipment procurement... liaising with engineering, sensor maintenance... the list goes on."
"I think I've got it, sir. Thanks," Borthian added, taking the proffered PADD with an amused glance. He immediately harangued a passing Ops crewmember - Petty Officer Bovois - recognising him as one of his staff, and went off down the corridor in attentive dialogue.
Seth made a small tight-lipped smile. He had the impression that Borthian was going to be more 'hands-on', perhaps a bit more assertive than him in the role of COO. Time would tell, however. His commbadge chirped.
"Park to Bridge, Prepare to set course for the risa sector. Commander Helacaan report to my Quaters as soon as your free from your duty's."
"Copy that, sir. I am able to come immediately." He exited the bridge, waving to his former underling Lieutenant Hasak who was assuming the engineering console.
The Nevada was still in orbit of Earth, moored to the Spacedock, but her engines were warming. Soon, Seth thought, they would make that always compelling push for space. He rang the Captain's quarters' door.
"Captain," he stood to attention, acknowledging his CO as he opened the door. "We've set a course for the Risa sector, sir. Waiting on your order to get underway. Lieutenant Borthian has reported in, along with the new science officer. I'm sure they'll both settle in well." Seth's mouth shifted; he tried not to let his discomfort at handing over the Ops department to a young Lieutenant show, but he couldn't help but be afraid of what might happen to Ops without his direct control, even if he had been lax in its administration.

Park motioned to the seat across from his chair. "Have a seat Number one." He spun the console around and it showed a star chart of the risa sector. "We have been ordered bu Admiral Bishop to look into a lost starfleet vessal last seen in this sector."
Park tapped another command and the image of a starfleet officer names Cherb on it. "This is the last officer to be seen in commanf Commander Alex Cherb." Park watched his Xo's face as he looked at the console. "So you know Commander Cherb was on the U.S.S Kelson with me at the Academy."
Park knew after that Academy Accident all cadets were trained to avoid what happened. Park watched as he saw relized what happened.
"Yes Commander there was 7 members of our academy class that was killed during that training mission, However it has shaped me into the man i am today as well as the man he turned into." Park said.
<tag Seth>
Park looked out the window and said "I want a battle Plan should we come into battle with this ship or this person. I have opened all information to you and the tactical officer regarding this person."

"Yes Commander there was 7 members of our academy class that was killed during that training mission, However it has shaped me into the man i am today as well as the man he turned into." Park said.
At first Seth was at a loss to understand what his Captain meant, which he should've guessed at from the pause and the significant look. He nodded in eventual comprehension, "A rogue?" It was more a request for wordless confirmation than an actual question.
Seth had had his time dealing with renegades in his past, in Starfleet and out of it. It was part of his genetic makeup almost, putting down traitors or dealing with being labelled one himself.
"You say Cherb was the last one to be seen in command. Who was the ship's designated CO? Do we know of his or her whereabouts?" he asked. Seth was watching his CO carefully, seeing the distraction there and drawing him back with a question everytime Park seemed to draw off into contemplation.

"... I have opened all information to you and the tactical officer regarding this person."
"We'll start running scenarios immediately, Captain," Seth nodded. "I'll get studying Cherb's background, too, although some more information on what exactly happened between you two might be handy, sir.
"One more thing, sir," Seth said rapidly. He grinned nervously, aware that Park would rather have him out of his quarters sooner than later, to be alone with his thoughts. "Do we have your order to get underway?"

"You say Cherb was the last one to be seen in command. Who was the ship's designated CO? Do we know of his or her whereabouts?"
Park was still looking out the window when he answered "The Captain was found floating in space in a damaged shuttle craft. Cherb staged a mutiny, however the Captain Died on the way to a starbase. My mother was on the U.S.S Portland who found the ship drifting in space 2 years ago.
Park looked at his XO "This mission is going to go deep into my past and there are things you need to know but all in time." Park said

"Do we have your order to get underway?"
Park blinked realizing he never officially gave the order to get going. "Yes Commander i have been so deep in thought, Let me know when we are close to the system. Dismissed."

Park turned back to the window as he heard his doors open and close, He started to think about that day almost 6 years ago.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Six years Ago Sol System Earth Starfleet Academy 2200 PST
Cadet 3rd class Jon Park was looking over a few files in the Academy database, There was a mission briefing at 0900 the next day about where each Cadet was going to be. He was one of the Cadets to be on the Bridge for Alpha shift Tactical station.
Members of his team was set up below deck, no one was ready for this mission but it was just a 2 weeks training mission to memory alpha to deliver some equipment and back to earth.
He had a knock on his door and opened it to let another cadet in "Jaden, Marcus come in." He was friends with them both but he was waiting for one more member, the door opened again and in walked Alex Cherb.
"Cadets i am going to let you know you assignments aboard ship. jaden you will be in engineering, Marcus you will be on deck 5 in the main shuttle bay. myself and Alex will be on the bridge, I will have alpha shift and Alex will be on beta shift." Park said.
Park looked at his team they all knew he and Jaden were dating and this was the first test of them in a setting other then a simulation. "I will see you at the staffing mission at 0900, Dismissed"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Park looked at the picture he moved from his shelf to his desk, Him Jaden,Marcus and Alex taken just hours before that deadly mission. He never thought that it would be him as a Cadet making his first Command choise that ended in a death.

Seth entered the bridge, having stopped by sickbay for a brief checkup after leaving the Captain's quarters. He'd been complaining to the stand-in CMO of headaches and an occasional fuzziness of vision. Perhaps he'd been pushing himself beyond his limits recently; his new role as XO was taking its toll.
"Helm, set course for the Risa system, engage warp 7," he ordered, settling into the XO's chair. There was no point taking Park's chair; both seats were central and had panels that had the same array of functions. That, and the big chair was still too frightening a prospect for Seth.
A momentary murmur swept through the bridge at the naming of Risa, and a few hopeful expressions worked their way to people's faces. Seth cleared this up in no uncertain terms, "No, we're not going on vacation." The bridge sighed. "We're to locate a rogue Starfleet vessel that was last reported in the system's vicinity.
"Dawson, that means we need tactical simulations carried out should we encounter the vessel in a combat situation. I'd also like you to start investigating the vessel's history and research the mutiny that took place 2 years ago. It's not exactly your area of expertise but we are short staffed at the moment."
"The name of the ship?" Blaze asked pointedly, almost pouting from the Tactical stand.
"Ah, that's an excellent point," Seth said, holding his hand to his forehead. It was proving hard to remember everything as XO, "Contact the Captain. He'll supply you with the ship's name and registry."
<tag Blaze if you're around & Park>
The Nevada jumped to warp, stars or the simulating effect of them streaming across the viewscreen from a centre point at the front of the warp bubble. "Hasak, get down to engineering. We can't have you late for your first staff brief," he told his friend gruffly, as was his manner. Then he tapped a control on his companel, "Captain Park, this is Helacaan. ETA to the Risa system is approximately 8 hours, sir."

"Captain Park, this is Helacaan. ETA to the Risa system is approximately 8 hours, sir."
Captain Park was so lost in thought he responded to his XO then tapped his combadge "Understood, When the system in on the long range sensors start scanning for the ship."
Park looked at the picture again and walked out of his Quarters, entering the turbo lift he said "Deck 6." As the lift took him to the deck he requested he then enter the holodeck and said "Computer access Starfleet files and activate program from starfleet records stardate 2314.2."
The computer worked and said "Program complete enter when ready." As he walked into the holodeck he was back on the Cadet training ship and Park sat in the command chair as he had the last 5 hours of the mission that was his first official command .
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Park stood on the bridge as the ship exited warp at starbase 24 in the Risa Sector near earth. There they were picking up the supplies they would need for the trip to Memory Alpha. Park reported to the training Captain Lt.Commander Nixon. "Sir cargo bay 4 reports all supplies have been beamed aboard. We are ready to depart on your order."
Commander Nixon looked at the helm, "set course for memory Alpha, Engage at warp 4." That would give them a week to get there. The training mission was more to see if the Cadets were ready to go on there semester on a starship then the supplies themselves.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Park looked at the console in front of him as he was seeing the course and speed for there last heading. It wasn't for memory Alpha.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
four days later
Cadet park was just starting his shift when he looked at the communication board and saw something interesting "Captain there is a incoming distress call from a ship bearing 245 mark 45, Location is close to Romulan space, the Agrama system."
Everyone on the bridge knew just how close to the romulan boarder that was, just on the other side of it. "Contact starbase sierra and see if they are able to send a ship, Inform them we are on a cadet training mission and unable to assist at this time Mr.Park." Park nodded and sent to communicate. In just a short time Park reported "Sir Starbase Serria reports they have no ship ready to assist in a rescue and we are the closest ship. Admiral T'rel has ordered us to help." ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Park looked at the Captains chair and knew that the course change was the beginning of the end for the Cadet ship as well as a friendship.

There were problems as soon as they arrived on the outskirts of the Risa system. Starfleet monitor vessels operating under the jurisdiction of the Risan planetary administrators were rerouting, and in some cases blocking, traffic moving in system.
Seth went back and forth with the Federation civilian that commanded Risa's traffic monitoring, resisting the urge to call the Captain to the bridge. He could handle this, he hoped.
A dropped nav buoy had alerted them once the Akira class had approached to within 50 million km of it.
"Warning, Federation vessel. This area is under quarantine order of Admiral Alynna Nechayev. Reason: Bioweapon containment issue. Repeat... Bioweapon containment issue."
The message from the buoy had cycled again and again 'til Seth had it cut off.
"Bioweapons...?" he murmured, turning to look at the bridge staff, seeking an unlikely instant explanation. Most were speechless, while a few murmured like himself. Active bioweapons in Federation space was a worrying enough prospect without thinking of an accidental detonation, or some such, besides.
"Let's get some answers. Find the administrator responsible for space traffic."
After that fruitless exchange with Mr. Zyr'Kotm, as his name turned out to be, Helacaan received a further alert from the bridge staff. He asked what it was, trying to keep himself together in this constant flow of information. This will overcome me if it goes on any longer, he thought.. Dread to think what'll happen in a real crisis.
The crewman informed him the Nevada was crossing into the Risa system proper. "Captain to the bridge," Seth requested, "We've arrived, sir, and we have some issues. The system has been quarantined. We've contacted the authorities but haven't been able to get a straight answer."

Seth strode with purpose through the lower decks of the Nevada, headed for the secondary holodeck. He'd booked some time to run a selection of black box playbacks, the foremost of which was Commander Cherb's last assignment under the authority of Starfleet. Of course, he took priority, second only to Park, so it wasn't exactly a matter of squeezing in an hour, as it was declaring that the first officer needed the holodeck for mission purposes.
"Computer, run holodeck simulation Cherb-Zeta - Alpha 7 3 point 5." The computer beeped quietly in reply, and positive indicators lit up on the doorpanel.
"Select file beta 9 3. Playback from time index 3 hours 39 minutes. Begin."
- - - - - - - - - -
He strode into the secondary holodeck amidst a flurry of activity. There was an unnerving moment as a Starfleet engineering tech walked right through him - the man's photonically projected form filtering out of existence, as it came into contact with the real matter of Seth's body.
Seth stood to the side, peering out the bay window at the Utopia Planitia main orbital yard. To his left, a giant Sovereign class vessel lay cradled in the spindly arms of the yard's main construction bay. Personnel headed back and forth down the large construction access tunnel, weaving through repulsor vehicles carrying larger pieces of equipment (considered too sensitive to matter-transport into place on the Sovereign's superstructure).
Cherb and three colleagues stood behind Seth, arrayed around a construction situation table. Helacaan was unaware of the nature of Cherb's involvement, or even where he was meant to be assigned. He only knew that this scene was roughly 4 years in the past - placing it halfway between whatever had happened between him and Park, and the loss of Cherb's vessel to mutiny in deep space.
Seth left the impressive view of the window and walked up to the situation table where Cherb was. He listened in to the conversation.
"The pylons are necessarily stronger at the base where they join the stardrive section," a woman of Commander rank was speaking to Cherb, "Regardless of the equalizing effect of the warp bubble, the pylons are strengthened using exotic matter binded with tritanium."
Helacaan was vaguely interested. He looked to Cherb who took his time to speak. "What kind of exotic matter?"
"That's classified, Lieutenant." Seth gauged the man's reaction but found nothing. What was the importance of this particular time index again? He'd highlighted it earlier as worthy of exploration, having skimmed all the files for noteworthy occurrences. He didn't have to wait any longer.
An explosion, some three quarters the way down the access tunnel, ripped the shaft clean away from the yard. A spiralling wash of debris, repulsor vehicles and people were vacuated down the shaft, some blown into space, some saved by emergency forcefields. One whole pylon of the Sovereign class vessel - that had been cut loose by the blast - had been severed, tumbling out of sight to impact somewhere below. Seth felt a sickening rumble through his feet as the nacelle struck the yard.
The forcefields, he noticed, weren't having quite the desired effect. While some personnel glided gently into the energy grids, those who had been moving faster down the tunnel suffered broken bones, or other serious injuries, whilst those moving at even higher velocities were pulped on impact, or crushed by pieces of equipment. Blood splattered on the fields and vaporised, sizzling in the air, or soaked into the growing piles of people around the forcefields.
Seth was immune to the carnage unfolding around him, but still he didn't feel obliged to stay here longer. The ceiling was coming down, weakened by the devastating impact of the Sovereign class's nacelle. Helacaan looked about, hunting around the table and the adjoining stations. Cherb was nowhere to be found.
"Computer, freeze program," he said above the horrific tonitruous noise. "Rewind, five times speed." There was the odd effect of explosions folding into themselves, and people flying in reverse across the open space. He tracked the movement at the table. "Freeze, wind forward, half speed..."
"Commander Helacaan, this is the bridge. Request you report to station, sir."
Seth gulped, sighed. He looked about him again. He could wait, he decided. The simulation wasn't going anywhere. It would remain frozen like this, locked intractable from this instant of chaos.
"Computer, end program, and save at current time index."
He headed to the bridge for his shift with the Captain.

Captain Park looked at his first officer "Restricted for bio-warheads." He knew this was a lie. "Commander i have this for you, its a holoprogram of something that happened at the shipyard where cherb's ship was being constructed." Park looked at the Lt.Commander at the Tactical station "Get me starfleet command on subspace and put it into my ready room."
Park went into his ready room and tapped the console, as he waited he knew it would only be a moment since they were so close to earth, he got the call and tapped the console the image of 2 people one he knew one he didn't expect to see "Admiral Nechayev and its been a long time Lt.Lora but i see your in good health."
Admiral Nechayev looked at me "Captain what are you doing at Risa that system is restricted." Captain Park looked at her "Admiral you and i both know that the restriction of the risa system is not true, does this have to do with our mission?"
Lt. Rina Lora looked at her "Captain this has nothing to do with Cherb and his betray of the federation." Park saw the Admiral hold her hand up,"Captain You know more then i was lead to believe. Permission granted to enter the system, however this is now a classified mission." Park knew what that meant and nodded he knew what that meant.
He closed the channel and looked at the picture on last time before heading to the bridge "Get commander Helacaan back to the bridge and go to red alert."
Park waited till his first officer returned to the bridge and informed the bridge "This has become a classified mission and you all know what this means." Park looked at each officer and then took his command chair "Helm enter the system."

"Decrease speed to three quarters impulse," the Captain ordered. They were approaching one of the outer rocky worlds in the Risa system. The paradise world of Risa itself was further in system, beyond an asteroid field.
Seth and the CO had decided between themselves how they were going to best scan for the missing vessel (if it was indeed in the vicinity). They'd decided on a systematic sweep of the outer planets to try and detect an ion trail that matched Cherb's vessel's engine signature. The general opinion was that the inner planets needn't be worried about too much yet, as there was a heavy Federation presence there, which surely would've been aware of an unregistered vessel in its spacelanes.
So far there had been no success. Seth was beginning to wonder if Cherb's vessel, if it'd truly been here, had been somewhere far outside the plane of the system, perhaps in its equivalent of the Oort Cloud. Still, he would've expected there to be some sort of engine trace passing through the ecliptic, but then perhaps Cherb had made efforts to mask his signature.
"Scanning the surface," Lieutenant Borthian at Ops reported.
"The authorities say there's no trace of any Federation vessel here, Captain," Seth said, "But I wouldn't want to go solely by their reports."
Park asked how the simulation playback had gone. Seth resisted a shrug, "I've found something that could be of interest, but the event is already quite well documented sir. I need to finish the simulation, and perhaps study some of the other files. Did you know there was a serious incident with Cherb's vessel during its construction four years ago?"
<tag Park>
"In the mean time me and the tactical officer still need to run those tactical scenarios should we encounter him."
The Nevada had entered into a slingshot flyby of the world it had approached, allowing for a closer scan of the surface. The planet was fairly inhospitable to humanoids, no water, a thin atmosphere and mortally cold. There were just two surface installations, run by the Risan administrators. Seth wondered if they would know the reason for the Nevada's approach, considering their mission had now been made classified.
Borthian's report was ready, "There's an anomaly. We're detecting one biological presence next to some sort of metallic object on the surface, unidentified. It's on the opposite side of the world to the installations."

"Run from previous time index," Seth said softly, standing in the gunmetal grey grid of the holodeck. The situation table, with the ceiling half collapsed above it, materialised before him. The female Commander from before stood over the table, blood running down her back, while another officer was trying to drag her away.
Cherb had seemingly disappeared. Seth glanced down the maintenance tunnel leading to the Sovereign class ship that had been under construction, at the carnage unfolding within, then skipped towards the exit to his left. The ceiling finally caved in just as he departed, and subsequently the whole section was sealed off.
He made it through the blast door - which he'd been able to walk through as if it wasn't there - and searched the comparatively peaceful anteroom. Cherb truly had gone. Did that mean he'd escaped unscathed - perhaps damningly - or had he been caught in the blast? Wasn't the latter impossible, considering Cherb was still alive today?
The Commander called for the arch. "Let's try another one..." he muttered, working the panel. He reset the time-index to well over a day later. The location of the playback shifted, this time to the cockpit of a runabout in low Mars orbit. Above them was the wreckage of the Sovereign class's nacelle, and above that the crescent of the Martian dawn.
Three people were present. The female Commander, injured and in a repulsor chair; an intense-looking man in a Starfleet Intel uniform; and a third, the pilot of the runabout. The first two were gazing up at the nacelle wreckage that was several kilometres away, talking in low voices. Seth was interested now. They were speaking of something that had been found in the wreckage, something unusual, something foreign.
The runabout accelerated towards the nacelle with a short burst of ventral thrusters. The area around where the pylon had joined with the nacelle was all torn and disfigured; this apparently was the area of interest.

Cadet Park stood at the Tactical station of the Federation Training ship Kelson, He was the ranking cadet on duty and only answered to the captain and the XO. His girlfriend was down below deck running main engineering.
Park read his console "Captain we are approaching the Agrama system." The captain of the training mission looked at him "Understood Yellow Alert." Park tapped his console "Yellow Alert aye sir." soon the bridge was full of regular officers and beta shift cadets where were on call, Cadet 2nd class stepped out of the turbolift and looked at Park nodded and too the Ops console with his Training officer.
"All decks report yellow alert Captain." Chelb reported from the ops console. the captain ordered the helm to move into the system and Park was scanning for Romulan ships without having to be asked, Park knew there was little chance of finding with the cloak he wouldn't know of the ship until they decloaked..
Park knew this would be a long day coming up but it had to be done. "Captain i have located the ship on bearing 237 mark 235, distance 1.5 km away." Park looked at the captain and hoped he knew that there was the issue with the romulans." Park spent the next several hours on the bridge as they made there way to the ship. "Cadet Park you Cadet Chelb and Cadet Parker are assigned to the away team with Commander Nixon and security team Alpha."
Park moved to the turbolift with the officers and he knew Jaden was moving down in Engineering as well. Park knew this was had the possibility of an attack from the romulans. Park met with his commanding officer who would be part of his team and stood near as he was given a phaser and a tricorder as well as a new experimental weapon a mark 3 Phaser rifle. Park moved to the transporter Padd and felt as he was moved from the Kelson to the Ship they were here to help.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Park was sitting on the bridge as he listened to his first officer report and his request "what was so interesting commander?" Park listened to him and realized it was interesting. sadly i don't know anything about what happened except a Lt.Junior grade officer was killed. I was on the U.S.S. Northstar at the time as Lt.Commander and head of security."
Park watched as his XO left the bridge with the security chief and knew he was heading to the holodeck to finish what they started he was waiting for the scan to finish. Park head the report then thought a moment. "I want a detail scan of that life sign and then see if a warp trace like the one from file 324 is a match."

Holodeck 1
The runabout had pulled alongside the wrecked nacelle, traversing a part of its length to the area where it'd joined with the pylon. Beyond the dark spindly remains of the nacelle was the widening crescent of Mars, a huge arc with a dull sheen the colour of rust red. In combination with the light of Sol it cast the nacelle in a fiery tangerine glow.
The shuttle came to a halt next to the remains of the pylon. "Scanning the nacelle," the pilot said, sliding across to another console, "Earlier readings confirmed. There's definitely omething in there that doesn't belong."
"Are there any kaons left?" the injured Commander asked.
Seth stood against the wall, in the background observing their conversation. From what they'd been saying, apparently the kaon particles were the exotic matter that had been used to strengthen the nacelle pylons. Something had disrupted the kaons' interaction with the material in the pylon, in fact had caused it to unbind and fling the nacelle into the superstructure - and subsequently the Utopia Planitia yard. But that same something had also caused an explosion...
He frowned as he watched the discussions progress, stared at one of the console panels; it was he realised a holodeck control panel doubling as simulation scenery. Using it to check the holodeck safeties were on full, he then walked through the bulkhead of the runabout, into the vacuum.
The Commander walked an invisible platform through empty space, traversing the 10 metre gap between the runabout and the nacelle. He approached one of the masses of torn pylon material, an explosion of slivery quicksilver metal shards complicatedly intertwined; something seemed wrong immediately. Seth was stunned to see biological matter coating the sheared black metal. How could the runabout have missed it? It was laced to the metal, nothing recognisable, human or otherwise. If this had been from some creature, then it was nothing he'd ever seen before.
"Sir, I recommend we prepare an away team for the planet. I'd like to investigate that biosign before we leave orbit." Seth watched the Captain as the latter paced the bridge. Scans had been inconclusive as to whether the biosign was alive or not. One way to know for sure was to go down and have a look.
"The administrators might complain, sir," Lieutenant Borthian warned.
"We're on a classified mission, Lieutenant, if they did we wouldn't be obligated to give an answer," Seth said gruffly, looking up at his CO. "Captain, I can have a team ready to go in five minutes."
The tactical officer spoke up. "Sir, we've identified an ion trail. I'm currently cross-referencing with the engine signature in the database. It will take up to an hour."
<tag Park>
Seth found it curious that they had only detected an ion trail now, having been in this volume of the system for some time. It reminded him of what he'd just witnessed on the holodeck. Mysterious biological matter in the Sovereign nacelle pylon that hadn't been detected until they were right on top of it. These coincidences weren't to be taken seriously, especially as he was merely relating and comparing the event to something in his recent experience, which people did all the time.

"Captain, I can have a team ready to go in five minutes."
Park nodded and replied "Do it but i want you out of there at a moments notice, I don't have a good feeling about this." Park looked at his XO as he left the command level and headed to the turbolift Park looked at the Tactical officer about the Ion trial "Track it and when you know what ship it is tied to i want to know."
Park stood and said "Helm you have the bridge." Park turned to the Ready Room and entered pressing the controls to lock the door. He moved to his desk and turn the chair to look out the portal.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cadet Jon Park with Cadet Chelb and Cadet Parker beamed into the Supply ship with Commander Nixon and a whole security team. Park opened his tricorder and looked around as the device scanned the area. Park nodded to Commander Nixon that the area was clear. Parks role was tactical chief on this away mission, Chelb was part of the operations support staff and Parker was set up as the Engineering expert for the away mission.
Commander Nixon looked at Park "Cadet locate the lifesigns we scanned and beam them back to the ship, Chelb your with him. Parker you and i are heading to Engineering and see if we can get this ship working again. Park turned and went out one door with Chelb right behind him.
Park headed to the aft section of the ship as he scanned for the lifesigns he knew something was wrong. "Cadet Chelb, The door to the Aft compartment is sealed. We need it opened." Chelb scanned to door and offered "We can use a Phaser at setting 4 and break the seal."
Park removed his Phaser as did Chelb and they fired at the door opening it in 3 shots. Park moved to the door and opened his tricorder again, Scanning he saw the life signs change =/\= Park to Nixon, sir the life signs are gone. Sir its a romulan trick."
Park moved back to the main room and he heard his combadge speck =/\= "Kelon to away team, 2 romulan birds of prey just declocked we need to beam you out of there."
Park tapped his combadge "Park to Kelon, 2 to beam up." Park felt the transporter grabbing him and return him to the Kelon. Park waited in the transporter room as he waited for the rest of the team to return. When he and Chelb was the only members at first Park went to the console and saw they were moving to get the rest. Moments later the rest of the team was back and they were heading back to there Posts.
Park steeped out of the Turbolift and took the Tactical Station as Chelb returned to Ops. The Captain was sitting in his command chair, Park scanned and then reported "Shields up captain all Away team members are back on board." The captain nodded "Thank you Cadet. Hail them." Park tapped the commands and the communications were open. Park listened well kind of until he saw a build up. He cut the communion and then said "Sir they are opening fire."
The ship jolted and shook as shot after shot hit the Kelon, Park fired back best he could but never expected to have to take an academy ship into battle, The ship was 15 years out of service, however could take a beating from the romulans. Park scored a direct hit to the bird of prey's impulse drive. Park reported this as a shot hit the shield and a console exploded and the Captain hit the floor and stopped moving. Commander Nixon moved to the Captains side as a jolt made him hit his head right against the Helm console. "Park to Sickbay medical team to the bridge."
Park moved to check the captain who was dead, then the commander he was alive just knocked out. With no other Commissioned officer on the bridge this made Park as the senior Cadet in command. "Helm move us away and signal Starfleet command that we are under attack." Chelb moved to Tactical and they meet eyes. Park never thought he would be the Officer in charge. "Set course 153 Mark 24 for Starbase Sierra. Warp 3."
The ship left the area and Park felt the ship jolt and the Kelon dropped out of warp less the 2 light years from the attack, Park knew the Romulans could scan that and as Park feared Chelb reported they are coming after them. "Chelb you have the bridge i will be in Engineering."
Park moved down the corridor and entered engineering and looked around only cadets were there. "Cadet Parker, report." Parker looked up and knew with that order what happened "Captain we need to fix an Plasma conduit to make to core function and do do so we would put the person who fixes it in danger." Park looked at her "Only a tech with class 4 skills can do that...." Parker intruded "So you know who has to do it." Park grabbed her "No Jaden you can't." Parker picked up the kit she would need and said "Either i go and fix the core or the romulans will fix us." Park took only a moment. " Do it Cadet." As they both moved to the jefferies tube access he added "I love you." and the hatch closed.
Park returned to the bridge and as he exited he looked at Chelb, Park looked like he just shoot his puppy and Chelb was shocked, "Cadet Parker has to repair a plasma conduit." Chelb knew that would kill her. "Park how could you do that?' He said to Park. "Return to your station Cadet." Park said " No!" Chelb replied moving closer. Park replied "Return to your station or i will find someone who will." Park said as he turned around to face the view screen. "Chelb grabs him and swings Park around, Park pulls back and swings and hit Chelb square in the jaw. Chelb hits the floor and Park turns to 2 security guards, "Take him to the brig. Cadet Chelb you are under arrest for striking a senior officer."
Park felt the ship shake and then head a report the warp core was on line "Set course for earth, warp 7" Park knew he would be home in less then 6 hours." Helm you have the bridge, i will be in sickbay." Park ran down the corridor into sickbay as he saw Jaden's body being beamed into sickbay, The nurses held him back as he saw the doctors work on her moments past and Park saw the CMO shook his head. He turned to Cadet Park and looked at him "I am sorry her injury's were just to much."
one week later
Cadet Park was sitting in the audience after testifying in Cadet Chelb's Court Marshall he was tried and convicted, Park looked at Chelb and knew he was in trouble but he had spoken to the Admiral in charge and knew he was getting a slap in the wrist if you call losing your entire academic year and being demoted to Cadet 3rd class." Park stood when the Admiral reentered the court
"All stand." Park stood with the others and the Admiral motioned for them to sit. "Cadet Chelb please stand, You have been found Guilty of striking a senior officer. the officer in charge one Cadet Jon Park has made it clear in his testimony that you were acting out of your range as acting head of security. it had been decided that you will lose all academic credit for this term and you will be reduced in rank to Cadet 3rd class. Further more you will have this incident posted into your permanent record.
The admiral hit the chime and all stood. As the people moved around to leave Park moved to Chelb, "I am sorry Alex, you need yo understand i was doing what was right and sending her to her death will haunt me the rest of my life." Alex looked at him with dead eyes and said "I understand SIR! am i dismissed i can't stand to look at you." Park nodded and he left. Commander Nixon walked up to him "Cadet Park, I am sure Cadet Chelb will be fine in time, I wanted to thank you for what you did, not many Cadets would have taken command like you did." He looked at Parks eyes, " I know ordering Cadet Parker to her death was extremely hard but you did what was right.' Park held up his hand "No sir i killed my wife to be and i have to live with that."
Park turned to look at a bunch of shuttles flying past the window as they flew in the missing man formation the ultimate show of respect for there fallen friends. Park pulled out a picture of Jaden and himself taken less them 2 weeks before the mission and said to it one last time "I love you."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Park snapped out of his trance when his door chimed "Come." Park said in walked His XO and the new operations officer, Park lost all track of time.

Four bulky white figures materialized on the surface. The biosign and its accompanying object were in the midst of a flat plain which extended across almost a quarter of the planet’s surface. The air was so thin, less than one oxygen molecule per cubic millimeter, that the away team had no choice but to use EVA suits, which would make progress considerably slower.
Seth could see the object, pressing through the film of greyness all around. A dark shape about four metres tall protruding from the dusty ground at an angle. “Scan it,” he ordered, but already had an idea of what it might be just from the general shape.
“It’s made of a mixture of duranium and tritanium,” Borthian reported, tricorder in hand. “Seems safe to approach.”
It took a little less than five minutes to pick their way through the rocks, and they were soon before the object. They stood, their faces etched in surprise behind their faceplates. It was a Federation starship escape pod; seemingly long beached on this world. Its surface was dull and scratched, showing the marks of a hot atmospheric entry. The air seemed to mourn in silence about them.
“Picking up the biosign.” Borthian chirped, waving his tricorder back and forth. “It’s some fifty metres the other side of the pod. Dead, I think."
"Smith, Harris. Check the pod and report its status. Me and Borthian will check the biosign." Seth began to lope his way across the plain, shielding his eyes from the Risan star that shone almost unfiltered through the delicately clinging atmosphere. They approached the biosign cautiously, coming into sight of it only when they were at a distance of about ten metres.
Seth looked at Borthian when it finally registered to both of them what it was. "Can you tell how long he's been down here?" he asked, as Borthian leant down over the man. The Lieutenant shook his head, touching the dead man's wrist as if feeling for a pulse.
* * *
The XO and the COO entered the ready room and found Park sitting with his back to them, seemingly lost in thought. Borthian regarded Seth, waiting for his XO to speak. Seth acknowledged, dragging himself out of his own reverie, "Captain, we've concluded the surface mission. You might not believe this sir, but we found an escape pod, Starfleet design. A man in civilian clothing was nearby, without an EVA suit. He couldn't have survived very long."
"We think he abandoned the pod and tried to cross the surface," Borthian said, "I can't think of what possessed him to do that. It's inconceivable that he wouldn't have checked the surface conditions before exiting the pod."
"What ship?" Park asked.
"The pod was registered to a USS Carthage, sir. Funny, there's no record of it in the database."
Park stroked his chin. "It's possible it could've been unregistered for Starfleet Intelligence purposes," he mused.
Seth cocked his head. "True, sir. What would that indicate? The science department are working on deducing the age of the pod and when it came down. And Borthian here is liaising with them to discover the identity of its passenger. For now I believe we'd be free to leave orbit. There doesn't seem to be anything more to find here and the escape pod has been beamed into the main cargo bay."

Park looked up recalling what happened was still bothering him, "Understood Commander please take us out and set a course for the next system." Park turned to the port as his officers left and thought of the trial he was part off and it was a bad thing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Admiral Marcus Delinor sat in the judges advocate chair and listened as member after member came forward to tell of what happened and how Cadet Park stepped up and took command and had to make a very big command choose when he had no real time or experience under him.
Then they got to him and the questions were not that hard most were "yes sir" or "no sir" the the question he was dreading. "Cadet why did you order Cadet Parker to her death?" Jon sat in the chair and thought long and hard for the reason he knew was the truth. "Well Admiral i ordered her to repair a conduit and i knew if it wasn't fixed the ship would be lost." Park looked off to the row of Cadets and looked at the eyes of Cadet Chelb and saw the hate was still there. "I knew she could repair the conduit and there was a chance she could survive." Park looked at Chelb and he saw a little more understanding to his chose."
The Admiral looked at the Padd and recalled what was the damage, "So you knew Cadet Parker could fix the conduit, And that's the reason nothing else?" Park looked at him "Admiral i don't understand what you mean?" Delinor looked at him "Cadet what was your status with Cadet Parker?" Jon knew this was the moment he was dreading "She was my girlfriend and i was going to ask her to marry me when the training mission was over."
The Admiral and a few Captain looked at each other and nodded "Cadet you knowingly killed someone who was so dear to you?" Park looked at the Captain who asked this. "Sir is that really a question for this inquiry. The ship was in danger of exploding and i made a command call. No matter the outcome the ship came first in my mind not Jaden."
Park heard they were going to take a recess to confer and Alex walked up to him "Jon, I am sorry the way i treated you. If i knew that was the reason..." Park cut him off "I can understand your point as well Alex, However the ship was going to explode and i thought everyone would want to live."
Park looked at the room and left the room until they called the hearing back to order, that didn't happen until 1400 later that day. Park looked at the Admiral as he called the hearing to order and said "Cadet Park for your actions during the Academy training mission we her by find you Not guilty. Also we are giving you the Christopher pike medal of valor, For services above and beyond the call of duty. Also you will be leaving the Academy in 6 mouths with the rank of Lt.Commander. this hearing is over.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Park looked at the portal and turned to the door, exiting to the bridge he went to the his command chair "Report."

"Captain," Seth nodded, moving back to let Park through to his seat. "We believe we're en route to Phoenix IV, sir, a planet in a binary star system. That's where the ion trail seems to be indicating. There are no other inhabited worlds in that system so I had a course locked in."
They observed the viewscreen, on which was plotted the course to the next system. It weaved past several phenomena, going down below the galactic plane to some of the lesser explored regions nominally within the Federation. Even this close to the core worlds of the Federation, there were volumes of its space that were still somewhat mysterious.
"ETA is ten hours, assuming we don't find anything odd about those phenomena. Perhaps they could be linked in some way to our hunt but it's not unusual to have that many between star systems." Seth sat in the XO's chair.
"How about the identity of the ion trail?" Park quizzed.
"That's still an unknown." Seth played with his arm panel, accessing the recent studies of the ion trail and the cross-referencing of the signature with those in the database. "We've managed to discount some ship types. There's still about 70% of the known starfaring cultures in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants for us to sift through."
* * *
Hours later Seth was attending to non-bridge duties, supporting the still rather green Lieutenant Borthian - and his Ops department - with the studies of the escape pod recovered from the surface of Risa V. The pod had been beamed internally from the cargo bay to the shuttlebay, the latter being deemed more appropriate for something that was meant to be spaceworthy.
"Try a micro-plasmic cutter," Borthian commed. The team in the shuttlebay acknowledged and moved around the pod towards its main hatch. Something had welded the hatch shut, something unbelievably strong. Borthian and Helacaan were at the control station above the bay, adjacent to the LSO's panel.
Seth watched Borthian at work in quiet amusement. It seemed odd - outside looking in odd - to see the Lieutenant at work with his old department. Bovois, Nayunski, etc. were all down there in the shuttlebay, along with some engineers led by Hasak - Seth's old assistant, now acting CEO. A polite alert from the LSO panel returned the XO to seriousness. He scanned it briefly, smiling slightly.
"It seems our new navigation officer has finally arrived..." Indeed, a shuttlecraft was inbound, approaching the Nevada from port at extremely high warp. Borthian's interest was attracted. He rose an eyebrow in interest then soon remembered what this meant for him.
"Clear the bay! Clear the bay!" he commed to below. Ops officers and engineers slowly picked up on his message and started departing the shuttlebay, securing their equipment as they went. Seth began rolling the bay doors back and prepared to deactivate the forcefield. The incoming craft grew from an indistinguishable star-like object to a recognisable Mk 10 shuttle. It slid gently into the bay and lowered itself to the deck in a silent hiss of pneumatics.
"James Cohen," Seth hailed the landed shuttle. "Welcome aboard, Commander."

.:.Starbase 47, Previously.:.
"Ah, Commander welcome back to Starbase Forty Seven."
James lifted the child up further in his arms it had been a few months since the death of Amanda his daughter's mother. He had taken some time away from Starfleet in truth he had no intention on returning. Things didn't exactly turn out the way he wanted, and being grounded were just plain boring. He looked at Sarelle with a smile though it was weak, "Thank you Lieutenant. Is the shuttle ready?"
"Yes sir. Is this your little girl?"
James nodded, "This is Sarelle yes. Her mother lived on Earth with her while I was in service. She is almost a year old, and when her mother died I had to return home. It's not something I like discussing." It was true he hadn't told many people that he had a family on Earth, and now that his wife had died and his daughter was at her grandparents until he returned home. Now he was standing there ready to fly a shuttle to his first command in months.
.:.U.S.S. Nevada, Current.:.
Commander Cohen grabbed the luggage in one arm and grabbed the toddler in his other arm. The Nevada was a ship he'd served on before now. He seen the Captain and the Acting First Officer standing there.
"James Cohen," Seth hailed the landed shuttle. "Welcome aboard, Commander."
"Thank you Lieutenant Commander." He remarked the beard on his face was making him want to itch it was one more thing he needed to do. Remove it so that he looked like his naturally young self. Though eventually he would have to explain to them things that were too painful to think about. "So...What is the situation?"

"Good to have you, Commander." Seth couldn't help but smile as he showed Cohen across the shuttlebay to the exit on the far side. He was glad to have the Commander back aboard. Helacaan appreciated familiarity, and becoming reacquainted with someone was a comforting experience.
He signalled to some of the Ops crewmen, needing only the barest of gestures to his old subordinates to get them to take Cohen's bags. "This is the situation, Commander. As you'll know the Nevada's just left the Risa system. We're chasing a rogue Starfleet officer, whose ship went missing two years ago when he mutinied against his Captain. We believe the ship is still out there, with Risa its last known location. We picked up a very weak ion trail at Risa and are following it now."
"I'm sure the Captain will be able to fill you in better than I," he said as they stopped before the shuttlebay exit. "I'll have Nayunski and Perez show you to your quarters. Then you may head to the bridge where you can report to the Captain." He nodded as Cohen left.
<tag Cohen>
Cohen seemed a bit more 'rough hewn' than when Seth had last saw him. The beard probably did that. It suited him better than it suited Seth.
He felt the three pips on his collar, conscious that one of them was black and not gold. He'd been careful to stress that Cohen may head to the bridge. Although Seth was acting XO and Cohen was thus his subordinate, Cohen in fact held a higher rank than him. Thus there was this strange ambiguous hierarchy, with a standard line officer outranking the first officer. Seth would have to tiptoe around that for a while, perhaps until he got his next promotion.
"Back to work, folks," he called to the ops and engineering crew around the escape pod. A slight amused expression crossed his worn features. Folks... He never said that. He'd been around Earth-born humans too long.

Seth was back on the bridge after a long sleep in his quarters. He'd awoke the wrong way up in his bed, and had been left wondering what'd put him in such a state.
Then as he entered the bridge, the thought of it struck his mind. The blackness and the red glow of the light piercing his vision across the visible spectrum, throwing sparkling colours across the lines of his perception. The hatch of the USS Carthage pod; it had sprung open when his former Ops underling, Crewman Bovois, had taken a micro-plasmic cutter to the duranium seal. The Frenchman's arm had been severely burned, but he was alright, now in sickbay recuperating. What the team had found inside - the decleration harness, the glowing red light of the emergency release system, and the other article... Extremely interesting, but deeply disturbing.
"Commander Cohen," Seth nodded, as the newly arrived officer rose from the command chair. "How are you finding the conn? Been a navigation officer before?"
<tag Cohen>
Seth managed a smile, despite what he'd witnessed in the cargo bay. "I'd say I'm sure you'll settle in well. But then you've already been here. Commander, listen," Seth added hastily as the prim Cohen made his way down to the helm display. He spoke hushedly, glad that the bridge was for the moment quiet, devoid of many of the main bridge crew.
"I'm fully aware that you outrank me, and that this might be difficult for you. It is for both of us, I assure you. However, as your first officer, I do require that you carry out my orders without hesitation. I know you will, but I wanted to be sure. We are hopefully aware of our position. We'll do what's right for Starfleet. And more importantly we'll do what's right for the Nevada."
<tag Cohen>
Half an hour later, Seth had emerged into a state of satisfaction. Things were going well. Cohen was settling in perfectly at the helm, and more importantly Seth was finally starting to get a feel for the position of first officer. He felt comfortable, and the trouble in the cargo bay was momentarily forgotten. It was then that the Captain entered the bridge; the XO looked around, thinking it likely the CO had returned from his latest exploration of the holodeck, of his and Alex Cherb's dark history together.
