Ghes had been ordered to prepare the Enzio for launch. He and the crew were flocking to the docking bay now, the duty officer already running pre-flight checks so that they'd be ready to leave as soon as the umbilical port was withdrawn.
Apparently it was a matter of some urgency. A communication had been received from the USS Nautilus regarding a distress call from the little known star system Tethys Epsilon - the region the star was in hadn't been charted since a single mapping expedition conducted some 150 years ago, and thus minimal data was available. It was known that the system had one M-class planet - a desert world with no detectable lifesigns - and no other planets that were hospitable to humanoids. The Nautilus was ill-equipped to answer the call, the signal being of an old Federation designation of the highest alert status, and the Enzio, having been given no new assignment yet, automatically became the logical choice to make for the system.
"I suppose it's possible they're using that code because it's the only one they have, sir," the lieutenant, who'd met him at the turbolift when he'd entered the bridge said, handing him a padd.
"That may be true. It seems strange though they would only remember one distress code, the highest alert that indicates there a threat to the entire quadrant. They, whoever they are, have the whole of 34th fleet mustering in the adjacent sector around the border with Klingon and Romulan space. They're either desperate, or are joking around," Ghes was adjusting his collar, straightening out his uniform jacket and clearly uncomfortable.
"In which case anyone might be able to render assistance," the lieutenant realised.
"Exactly," Ghes sat in the command chair, uncharacteristically bothered and restless at this turn of events.
“I assure you, the Romulan fleet are not joking around,” a new voice sounded from behind them. The Romulan who had been seated in the Starbase restaurant, was now approaching the Denobulan. “They take this matter very seriously, especially when the Klingons appear to be readying their fleet to invade ours. Especially, when they are trying to annex the planet, which will wander into our space soon.”
Ghes, at first wondering where the sound was coming from, turned round sharply and started at who he saw, “You! So you’re interested in the Enzio’s next move after all, just not in the way I’d anticipated…” He exchanged words with an aide, irritatedly jotting down the last details on the PADD he’d handed him, and turned back to the Romulan. “Care to introduce yourself, sir? Not a word passed between us on the Starbase?”
“Ambassador Tedak, I am the liaison for Romulus to the Federation, and I have been such for over a decade. I used to be stationed on Starbase Assailant but lately I have traveled around the fleet, and even back home. Surprisingly as I am not really...welcomed back home for my pro-Federation ideals.
“I can’t believe that star system is about to cross the Romulan border… That’s how antiquated our method of mapping of the system was… It didn’t account for interstellar drift!”

“It happens. Most of the time the planet rotates within Federation space, but for a few months per year, the planet crosses into our space. As such, there is a cohabitation between Federation species, and Romulans, and it is quite peaceful. The inhabitants do not wish to be annexed by the Klingons, who are ever trying to expand on their space. It’s nowhere near Klingon space to begin with.”
“Commander Daya, Lieutenant Hood, do you have any input into these matters? Tethys Epsilon needs our assistance, but the Klingons, if the distinguished ambassador here is correct, are wanting to annex the planet for the Klingon Empire.”
Daya responded after a moment of thought. "Why would either race have need of a desert planet to begin with? Regardless I suppose I could attempt to act as an ambassador to the Klingons and try to sort this out before things get further out of hand.”
“Well, as the distinguished ambassador informs us, it’s a world inhabited by Federation citizens and Romulans alike… I don’t think Starfleet Command has any idea that such a place exists! And I too, have a hard time believing it. As you say, Daya, this is a desert world, and granted they are using a high priority Federation distress call but what possible interest could the Klingons have in it, strategically? Except… at the time when it’s in Romulan space, to annex it and thus expand their territory into Romulan space, Ambassador, which you’re right is tantamount to an invasion.”
“I believe I just said that?” Tedak queried, “and we don’t want to disrupt this unique society, simply because the Klingons want it. Wasteland or no, this is home to people.”
Ghes sat in the command chair, looking straight ahead at the view of Starbase 47, “Either way if Ambassador Tedak’s correct, the Klingons are in violation of their century long peace treaty with the Federation. If it were any other faction but the Klingons, this would be a precursor to war… Helm, set a course for Tethys Epsilon, warp 9.”
With the ship at warp, Ghes directed the bridge crew.
“Lieutenant Hood, this could turn into a humanitarian mission if the Klingons get there first. Prepare to receive refugees in that worse case scenario. Any further thoughts you can offer please do so.”
<Tag Allan>
“Commander Daya, do make contact with the Klingon Ambassador to the Federation in the Tethys Epsilon sector. See if you can get through to somebody who can tell us what’s going on on the Klingon front.”
<Tag Daya>
Ghes held a hand up, anticipating that Tedak may have significant objections, “Ambassador. While your presence is obviously to mediate between these three factions and you’re the most qualified in such matters, I can’t trust that you’re not twisting the facts to the Star Empire’s advantage or that you’ll be impartial. Obviously your mandate is to negotiate something favourable for the Senate, and if that means the sacrifice of a Federation colony in favour of your government, I can’t let you take part in the negotiations with the Klingons.”
The Romulan’s expression darkened considerably for a moment, obviously irritated by the accusation. “Are you accusing me of being partial, admiral Gheskori? Me? My dear admiral, I have lived in the Federation for over 10 years by now, I was even married to a Vulcan doctor for several years, and I am godfather to my ex-wife’s new born son. Yes I am ordered to negotiate in favour of my senate, but whoever told you that I always do as my senate tells me to do? I negotiate for the people who live there, because I know what it is like not to have a home.”

Tiana had spent several days on reduced duty but she was now back to work full time. She was actually quite releved about that, she knew how close she had come to dying. Well, to be acurate, intellectually she knew how close she had come to dying but she couldn't actually remember much of what had happened to her. What she did remember what the complexity that had taken place in her head. Apparently there was a debate going on about whether she needed to perform a Zhian'tara now or whether what had happened to her counted. Tiana actually wasn't bothered either way but she didn't want anyone to mess with her or Cet for a while. Once again they had come to a point of balance, however it was a different place to where she had been before, her dreams were far more vivid for one thing.
In truth Tiana was actually slightly embarrassed about the whole situation managing to catch an illness that no joined Trill had suffered from in more than 300 years... Of course they had check all her immunisations, fortunately all the rest were up to date. She probably wouldn't have noticed she had been sick if she hadn't been joined, half the Enzio's crew had probably had the same bug.
Still, it was all over now and she was gladly back at work. She stared at the plate with the cake crumbs that was still sitting on her desk. One of her team had actually baked a cake as a welcome back present to her and there had been a gathering in the main lab which included the whole science department. Tiana was not ashamed to admit that she had cried. Now she just had to catch up with all her paperwork. It had clearly be breeding in her absence, the only thing that reproduced faster than tribbles.

“Let’s not turn this into a personal matter, Ambassador. Regardless of your family or how long you have lived in Federation space it doesn’t change your professional obligations.” Ghes sat in the command chair, signalling to Tedak who stood sedately before him, “You’ll be wanting to negotiate a favourable outcome for the Romulan populace on Tethys Epsilon… Co-habitation is all well and good and I’m sure you’re for that, but by virtue of your very presence here you’re obviously representing the Star Empire’s interests. And what, sir, is that animal on your shoulder?” he said with genuine curiosity such were the vagaries of his behaviour.
Ten minutes passed, the Ops console being occupied by Daya’s assistant who he’d rapidly appointed, the Commander himself below deck attempting communication with the Klingon envoy. Ghes touched the panel on his arm rest, “Commander Daya, Gheskori here, have you had any success contacting someone in the Klingon Diplomatic Corps, an attache, an envoy, anbody, the Klingon ambassador to Federation in the Tethys sector?”
<Tag Daya>
“Do you think it likely the Klingons would have appointed an ambassador to the Romulans in the region of space in question?” he asked Tedak, “If they are intent on invasion of the planet?”
“An Ambassador?” Tedak scoffed, “they are intent on invading it, they are more likely to send an attack fleet.”
Ghes mused in the command chair; it did make little sense that the Klingons were after a desert world. What resources could it possibly provide for them, as a staging point for any possible further incursions into Romulan space? If this was merely to disrupt a peacefully coexisting population of Federation citizens and Romulans - which Ghes had to admit he hadn’t heard of before - perhaps to turn the Federation off the idea of such joint enterprises with the Romulans, then it was an exceedingly reckless manoeuvre with potential for significant diplomatic upset that violated the peace between the Federation and the Klingons that’d existed for over a century. Perhaps the Klingons were fearful of a destabilisation in the balance of power: if the Federation and Romulans found that they could cohabitate quite peacefully then it could be viewed as one step on the way to strengthened ties between the two factions and a possible alliance.
“Commander Galwyn, please report to my ready room. Ambassador, if you’d like to join me also.”
He waited in slightly uncomfortable silence with Tedak for Tiana to arrive. “Ah ha,” he jumped up from his seat, “I’m glad to see you’re well again, Commander. And how is Cet?” he smiled and retook his seat. “Ok, I assume you have the mission brief. Tell me, what interest could the Klingons have in Tethys Epsilon, a desert world, home of a Federation-Romulan colony but otherwise lacking strategic value? Is there anything known about the planet, its climate, its composition,” he gestured lazily - he’d been far too long out of the discipline of practical science to know if he was speaking along scientifically intelligible lines, “That means it might be more of a resource to the Klingons than at first sight?”

Tiana acknowledged Ghes's summons and made her way to the ready room. She was not surprised to see that Ambassador Tedek had beaten her there
"Ah ha,” Ghes jumped up from his seat, “I’m glad to see you’re well again, Commander. And how is Cet?” Tiana smiled. "I am. Cet and are settled once again," She did not attempt to explain that as a result of what had happened to her and Cet she had more access to Cet's memories than she had had before. She suspected she would have to explain at some point but, given that extra memories was how this had started, now wasn't the right time.
"Ok, I assume you have the mission brief.
Tiana had wondered exactly the same and had dug deeply in to the planet. She had a few possibilities but nothing solid. "Tethys Epsilon is, as you say, a desert world, it is very rich in silica and related minerals. However, I believe the most likely reason for the Klingon interest in the planet are the Delta-silica crystal deposits. Delta-silica crystals can be used in disrupt or arrays. Lab experiments about a 150 years back showed they would be longer lasting and produce a more focused beam. However, it seems to be a relatively small increase in performance and naturally occurring delta-silica crystals are rare so itsnever happened outside a lab.

He acknowledged Tiana, swivelling on his chair, fingers arched before him. He'd heard nothing from Commander Daya and his contacts with the Klingon envoy thus far, thus decided to turn to more direct methods of gaining intelligence inside the Klingon border.
He tapped his commbadge, "Bridge, long-range sensor sweep of the boundary between Romulan and Klingon space, extending radially so that we capture at least fifty lightyears either side of their border. Please." Receiving affirmative, he turned back to Tedak and Tiana. "These delta-silica crystals, Ambassador... Have the Romulans any knowledge of them?" He paused, perhaps awaiting a response, "What I mean to say is that could the Star Empire have interests in Tethys Epsilon for the same reason as the Klingons - as Commander Galwyn Cet has posited?"
Half an hour passed and each of the three had returned to their positions on the bridge, Tiana this time taking the science station and Tedak taking his fast becoming customary position behind Ghes's command chair, leering over him he thought. Despite the Ambassador's assurances of his best intentions in this, it was unwise to take a Romulan ambassador at face-value; even if he believed himself to be acting honourably, the fact his commanders were high-ranking Romulan diplomats left ample reason for Ghes at least to have to be wary.
"Sir, we're detecting something on long-range sensors over the Klingon border," Daya's assistant chief reported, "It's a ship. No, make that two ships - the second is inside Federation space," the man paused, turning in his chair to look at his CO then glancing nervously at the impassive Tedak, "From its configuration there's a very strong possibility it's a Romulan vessel."
"Displacement. Type! Class!" Ghes was virtually shouting, leaping to his feet. He swung towards Tedak, "Would you care to explain, Ambassador? If," he allowed, "You have an explanation?" He was aware that Tedak may not know what the ship's purpose was.
<Tag Saryn/Tedak>
"Reading no lifesigns aboard," Ops reported, "Strange. I can't seem to get a reading on any of its internal systems, sir. Its dimensions would indicate a scout vessel, of similar era and design to those carried by Scimitar class Warbirds. I'm reading nothing except its size and heat signature. It's drifting on a heading nearly parallel with us; it will pass beneath us in 40 seconds."
"Lock on a tractor beam and bring it into the shuttlebay." He glared at Tedak as he walked to the upper deck, nodding courteously all the same, "Ambassador, Tiana, you're with me. Allan, you have the bridge," he ordered, then tapped his commbadge, "Mr Daya, please join us in shuttlebay 1. We've recovered a scout of Romulan design inside Federation space. Perhaps whoever's aboard can shed some light on why the Klingons want to annex Tethys Epsilon."
<Tag Saryn/Tedak, Tiana, Daya>
"Sir, before you go..." the assistant Ops chief called, "The other ship we detected, in Klingon space? It's a science vessel, and is on a direct heading for Tethys Epsilon. Checking the databanks, I found that the variant of ship in use was used extensively in the Dominion War for the procurement of experimental weaponry."
Ghes nodded, understanding the implication. Tiana may well be right; they could be trying to extract crystals from the Federation-Romulan habitation to increase their disruptor power output...

"Ambassador, Tiana, you're with me.
Ghes turned to the officer who'd taken over the tactical console as Hood had slipped into the command chair, "You are, Ms... Tahana? Ensign, please join us in the shuttlebay also. We may need security, it's anyone's guess as to why that scout ship is here over the border." Nor did they have any idea who or what might be on board the Romulan scout... no lifesigns had been detected, neither had any of the internal systems.
Ghes, Tedak, Tiana and Ms Tahana entered the turbolift as yet another officer stepped into the security officer's position on the bridge. On the way down the silence became noticeable, perhaps due to the presence of the Romulan ambassador who they had no right to worry about, nevertheless Ghes turned to the security officer to ease any tensions, "Excuse me, I don't believe I've made your acquaintance. Are you newly assigned here, Ensign?"
<Tag Kauri>
He nodded, "You should make an appointment with Dr Saryn soon. The obligatory medical check-up, you'll understand."
They arrived in the shuttlebay. Resting ominously on one of the shuttle pads was a pallid green Romulan scout vessel, approximately three times the length of the Starfleet standard shuttlecraft that occupied the bay, and showing no activity from its systems or from its presumed crew at all. "What is this thing doing here, Tedak?" he said coarsely, circling the vessel, "A spy vessel in Federation space? Are such things common occurrences in the Star Empire at this time? I understand the difficulty your Empire is passing through and its... shall we say paranoia about other factions intentions but - "
<Tag Tedak>
"Excuse me, Admiral, if you would take a look at this." Daya, who had joined them separately from his talks with the Klingon and Romulan diplomatic representatives in the area, got his attention, waving a tricorder at the scout.
Ghes jogged his way from the other side of the craft, slightly out of breath once he arrived back with his quartet of officers, "Yes?"
"The hull is impenetrable to scans, sir. Tricorder, ship's sensors, nothing conventional can break through it." Daya looked over his tricorder with an expression of curiosity, "It seems to be emitting a form of hull-shaped defence; something reflective, like a mirror for various particle energy streams, but not like a shield."
"Ensign Tahana, I wouldn't try the phaser if I were you," Ghes said, seeing the tactical officer with one hand on the type 2 phaser in its holster. Ghes drew himself up, regarding the implacable cold face of the snub-nosed Romulan scout and its black-tinted viewing ports. "Let's see if we can find a gap in its defences. I don't want to explore its possibilities for too long though, the longer we keep it here... Well, it could be a weapon itself, something we were meant to pick up."

Tedak was just as surprised as the rest and it echoed into the pet which remained with him at all times. The little brown chirped in annoyance as the Romulan just stared briefly at the screen before following the others in a hurry. "I don't know what that vessel is doing there," he spoke hurriedly, then fell into silence as the turbolift descended down to the shuttle bay. He didn't ingnore the woman who had joined them per sé, but he didn't acknowledge her beyond a nod either. Not yet anyway.
As they approached the alien craft, Tedak walked forward and reached to rest his hand on the smooth surface. "I don't know this type of vessel," he confessed, "I've never seen it before."
From another side, a Vulcan male came running in, a younger Vulcan close on his heels. THe younger man was looking pale but no less determined than his father. "If we have an alien craft on board, then we should observe decontamination protocols," Saryn suggested as he gestured for his son to find somewhere to sit. Anywhere, as long as he sat down.
Savin sighed. "I am fine," he answered softly, shaking his head in answer to his father's signing. "Tired, but fine." He smiled at Tiana and gave her an almost shy wave of his hand. "I am Savin," he addressed the newcomer, a young woman from what he could guess just looking at her. "I am one of the medics, though currently not on duty." He pointed at the older Vulcan. "My father, the chief medical officer, Saryn."

[Bridge, Tactical Station]
Kauri stood at tactical, her first shift on the bridge since becoming the head of the department. Her eyes and ears alert and she listened to the others.
Kauri nodded “Yes Sir,” as she moved to follow the others into the Turbolift. As the lift began to move again the Captain turned to her.
Kauri stood at ease, her hands clasped behind her back. “Yes Sir, I’m Ensign Kauri Tahana and I’ve just recently replaced the Chief of the Department. I will make an appointment as soon as I am able.”
[Shuttlebay]
Her hand gripped her phaser, raising it slightly out of the holster. The Captains voice caused her to pause.
“ I’m sorry Sir” Her grip relaxing but not her attention as she scanned the ship with her eyes. Her attention moved to the Vulcan who had joined the group and addressed her.
She acknowledged the two Vulcans with a nod. “ Ensign Kauri Thana, Chief Tactical Officer. “ She hoped her response wasn’t too curt but she knew her attention shouldn’t be diverted for long. The ship and the circumstances surrounding the current events should be her focus.

Savin gave the young woman an encouraging smile. "Relax," he suggested calmly, keeping his eyes on her as he spoke, watching her intently as if studying her. He leaned against the alien shuttle, seeking support as he continued to study her. "The Enzio crew is highly trained ma'am, and even my father and I are not without training so we will be quite safe in our investigation."
Saryn nodded in support of his son and, unlike the younger man, he was armed with his almost ever present sword. He hadn't allowed Savin to wear his, in his weakened state, fearing he might exert himself unnecessarily. "Savin is only here as a second medic even though his is not fit for duty. Additionally ma'am, when you address him, please make sure you have his attention. My son is deaf."

"Mr Daya, please join us in shuttle bay 1. We've recovered a scout of Romulan design inside Federation space. Perhaps whoever's aboard can shed some light on why the Klingons want to annex Tethys Epsilon." The commander had just finished his talks with the Klingon ambassadors, and unfortunately had not gotten very much usable information. With a sigh he left the meeting room he had been using and made his way to the shuttle bay. Arriving ahead of the others he began scanning the Romulan vessel that lay resting in the bay. Scratching his head he scanned it again, and again using various methods to try and get a better reading. When the other officers arrived he was walking around the ship.
Tricorder, ship's sensors, nothing conventional can break through it." "I wouldn't say it's a weapon at this point admiral, and as for the phaser, I'm not sure it would hurt anything. As I said it doesn't seem to be a shield of any kind... not in a physical sense anyway, I just can't seem to scan it" The commander reached his hand out to touch the vessel, and felt a tingle in his hand as it reached the hull. "Unfortunately i don't see anyway of getting it open at this moment. Do you have any ideas ambassador?"

Ghes watched Daya confer with Tedak, the Operations officer and the Romulan liaison by the hull of the Romulan ship. The vessel's presence here and Tedak's non-identification of it were worrying. It could be a covert mission of the Tal Shiar perhaps, then why hadn't the ship been cloaked? Yes, it could mask itself from being scanned internally, but its exterior was perfectly visible to conventional ship's sensors.
As he debated this internally, a yeoman strode into the shuttlebay approaching him with a PADD. He read over it briefly, nodded to the crewman and followed him out of the shuttlebay. "Keep investigating," he called back. He was led into the nearest empty office where he sat down at the secure terminal. The message started playing out on the screen, a Romulan sending instructions who hadn't introduced himself except to say that he worked for the Tal Shiar.
The message finished, "... He or she will not be harmed." Ghes turned cold with fury. How dare they? He didn't like being held to ransom over the safety of one or more of his crew. Though he had no choice but to follow the Romulan's instructions. He gripped the edge of the desk, his knuckles white as he raised himself to his feet, and headed back to the shuttlebay his countenance stormy. He reached the middle of the bay, having by this point calmed himself significantly.
"Ensign Tahana, execute Ambassador Tedak," he ordered.
"What?" Daya stood agape as he had paused mid-sentence in his talk with the Ambassador.
"Ensign," Ghes disregarded Daya and the other sounds of complaint from about the shuttlebay, "Execute the Ambassador. Phaser, highest setting." Tedak was admirable in keeping his calm, for surely he was raging or utterly confused inside. "Everyone back away," Ghes continued calmly, "He's adept in self-defence and will doubtless be armed."
"Sir, this is illegal!" one of the officers shouted at him.
"Ambassador," he directed his attention to Tedak, "This scout has a mechanism that protects others it recognises as Romulans. If I attempt to have you killed, it will lash out to defend its compatriot and in that gap will have its own defences lowered; we'll be able to prise apart the gap in the hull near the cockpit. I will explain all in a minute, you should be safe."
"How will it defend its compatriot. By killing me?" Tahana said as she aimed her phaser at the Ambassador.
"I think it will stun you." Though I cannot be sure, Ghes admitted inside.
<Tag Tahana, Tedak> OOC: By the way, if anyone would like their character not to be spoken for I will stop, I try to keep it to a minimum so as not to let any of your character show through.

The Romulan diplomat froze when he heard the orders, his eyes shooting daggers at the Denobulan admiral. He had given no cause that warranted his execution and he'd been up front about his intentions and had shared all he knew with this Fleeter. "Your statement is based on the assumption that it will defend me," he stated, his voice laced with anger.
Everyone knew that he had no standing in the empire, that he was always sent to the jobs that no other diplomat wanted. Some even reasoned he was a traitor, with his pro-Federation ideas and thoughts. Especially, after he married -and later divorced- a Vulcan woman (who he still loved and would protect if needed) "I am not comfortable and I protest your orders. I will not be used as guinea pig!"
"Your protest is noted but this is critical to the Enzio's survival, Ambassador. Ensign Tahana, if you would please fire at the Ambassador."
Still there was hesitation. It was understandable but they were running out of time. Ghes used the moment to bring an engineering team to the shuttlebay, to make sure all was ready to break into the cockpit in the moment the scout had its defences lowered. As the team arrived he lost patience, and looking at the senior officers and the Ambassador he addressed the shuttlebay as a whole:
"I have just received a message from an informant claiming to be a Tal Shiar agent, concerning this scout ship. He stated it will self-destruct in ten minutes if we don't manage to break into the cockpit section to disable its countdown. His evidence was quite firm." The anger, the memory of the message returned to him, "I wish it was otherwise but I've been given no option! He stated that any attempt to remove the ship from the shuttlebay will cause the self-destruct to initiate immediately."
Eyes flashing with anger, the Romulan drew himself up to his full height. "So you will sacrifice me to save your ship....that's very barbaric of you admiral, you disappoint me."
"It will only respond to a threat to yourself and thus this is the only way to save the whole crew, indeed, including all of those you see around you, as well as yourself. You will not die Tedak. Of that... you have my word." He wished he could be absolutely sure on that point - it tortured him to be put in such a position but it was either his whole ship going up in ten minutes or the shooting at but not the death of Ambassador Tedak. For a moment, Ghes wished he still had his erstwhile Romulan friend and 'book trader' Telmak aboard...
"Yes well, after that order you just gave, your word means precious little to me admiral. You could've informed me before giving that order, but no....you order this very young officer to shoot a Romulan official who, may I remind you, has diplomatic immunity so-"
Now that Kauri again seemed to hesitate he snatched the phaser from her grasp and shot at the Ambassador. There was a sharp intake of breath from all around as the beam shot out at Tedak, fizzled mid-flight and turned a ghostly white, like static, before dissolving completely. Ghes raised an eyebrow. He had been prepared to be stunned by the Romulan ship. Cautiously he fired on low setting at a point on the floor, and the phaser operated normally.
"Ambassador Tedak, I apologise. Perhaps I should not have launched into such a rash action to begin with. If I had been mistaken about the scout protecting you, understand I would've been fully compliant with Federation and Romulan law regarding my court martial and/or extradition."

"Lock on a tractor beam and bring it into the shuttlebay." Ghes glared at Tedak as he walked to the upper deck, nodding courteously all the same, "Ambassador, Tiana, you're with me.
Tiana nodded formally in response, possible new tech and the chance to solve a mystery, what more could any Starfleet science officer want?
"Sir, before you go..." the assistant Ops chief called, "The other ship we detected, in Klingon space? It's a science vessel, and is on a direct heading for Tethys Epsilon. Checking the databanks, I found that the variant of ship in use was used extensively in the Dominion War for the procurement of experimental weaponry."
Tiana smothered a shiver as she walked off the bridge, this was one occasion when she really didn't want to be right.
The ship was amazing, that level of protective field require a large power source and very careful focussing and tuning. She had read papers about the development of such things, and reall they were a natural follow up to the classic force field, but she hadn't heard of anyone stabilising anything larger than a lab bench model. At the moment she couldn't see a way to get information from within the shield, but it had to let some forms of energy pass, they could see the ship after all and it wasn't glowing as a result of whatever power source it had on board so it was obviously thermally venting as well. If she set up a complete scan that monitored all frequencies she should be able to work out how much energy was being emitted and then how it was being emitted and then, try to jump a signal back through the shields. It was either that or attempt to destabilise them. At the moment that felt as if it would destroying a work of art, not to mention it would be incredibly dangerous as all that energy would have to go somewhere.
Tiana heard a phaser fire and glanced up. To see Ghes lowering a phaser from firing position and fire at the floor. There were shocked expressions all round. What has she missed?
Apparently, the ship was protecting Tedek, which explained the energy pulse sh had measured. It must have been the dissipation of the phaser shot. There had been a fraction of a second when the uneven energy distribution had caused a thinning in parts of the shield. Tiana thought she was starting to get a handle on how this operated, sh hope she had enough time.

Half an hour had passed by and now operations officers, scientists and engineers crowded around the cockpit section, led by Tiana and the chief engineer - the latter was inside the confining space clearly not meant for humanoids, lifting out a piece of componentry, having it passed from hand to hand to Gheskori. He turned it over in his hands, small pieces of metal encrusted in its surface gleaming in the light. "That, Admiral, is the hardware that would've sent a message to the high yield plasma torpedo cache aboard that the self-destruct had been initiated. It didn't merely wish to blow itself up, it wanted to activate its warheads. The whole of the Enzio would've gone up with it." "Tiana," he got her attention, "Now we know how to break through their shields, see if you can find a shorter route to breaking into them, in case we come across any other Romulan scouts that just happen to wander into Federation space. Perhaps once we learn how their technology operates we can turn it to our own use... It could come in useful once we reach Tethys Epsilon." <Tag Tiana>Ghes climbed down from the cockpit thanking the engineer and turned to the senior staff and Tedak, holding aloft the component as if it was the symbol of his redemption, "This would've destroyed us all." Ghes resolved to discover the identity of the mysterious informant who'd told him about the self-destruct. It raised the question, he thought, How did an obscure agent of the Romulans know the scout was being tampered with, that the Enzio crew had been and were looking it over? Unless... They had cameras on the hull, or in the black-visored cockpit area? Then the informant was a part of the mission, but sympathetic to the Enzio crew's position. Ghes continued, "While his evidence that the self-destruct would happen was firm, I still played with two of your lives and I am sorry. Though you must understand that I had no choice in the matter. It was either possibly two of you that died or my whole crew." With the situation beginning to defuse and the picking apart of the scout ship well under way, Ghes approached the Ambassador, "Tedak, perhaps you can take over negotiations with the Klingon Ambassador," he raised a hand in apology as it seemed the obvious thing that he should have done in the first place, before hurrying to add, "I'm sorry for impeding you before, and for this whole affair... Truth be told, I couldn't be absolutely sure of your safety... I was playing with lives, and if you wish to submit a formal complaint to either the Federation or the Star Empire you have the right to do so." As the exchange finished Ghes brought Tedak back, nearly having forgot, "Also, do you have any contacts in the Tal Shiar? Any idea why they would've sent a vessel into Federation space during the crisis at Tethys Epsilon colony? If your government wants the Federation's assistance against the invading Klingons, doesn't the scout's presence somewhat undermine the power play? Your government is trying to turn the Federation and Klingons against each other in this sector, don't deny it, that's what it comes down to." <Tag Tedak>He walked up alongside Ensign Tahana, "Sorry, Ensign," he tapped her on the shoulder - a most un-Denobulan gesture of him considering his species' aversion to physical contact. "For grabbing the phaser from you, and for ordering you to carry out the shooting of the Ambassador in the first place. If any harm had come to the man, know that you would've been completely absolved of any responsibility. Perhaps it's time for your obligatory medical with Dr Saryn?" he smiled. "Alternatively, why don't you dine with myself and the Ambassador this evening. Commanders Daya and Galwyn will be along too, won't you?" he called across the shuttlebay at the two officers, who turned back to their work their feelings towards the invitation ambiguous. "Tethys Epsilon and the Romulan border are still nine hours away, and the scout's under close supervision... We have time for a staff dinner before we enter the crucible as it were!" <Tag ALL for senior staff meal >

"Ensign Tahana, do come in!" Ghes drew himself back, grinning as he admitted the new CTSO into the conference room which had been converted into a banquet room for their purposes. The last time it'd been utilised thus was to host Captain Franks of the USS San Jose, just before the Enzio's successful rescue of the USS Raven from Franks and his fellow conspirators, who would've destroyed the vessel. "By the way, I do apologise for what I asked you to do in the shuttlebay, Ensign. It's hardly the way to break the ice with a new crewmember. Please, have a seat. No one else has arrived yet, as you'll -" As he spoke the door slid open and another of the staff emerged. "Yes, yes, make yourself at home. It's not the usual briefing, though it may turn that way later on." <Tag Any (2nd member of senior staff to arrive)>"So," Ghes clapped his hands together at the head of the table, as the two officers took their seats, looking around bemused at the empty chairs and why the CO was choosing to address them now, "Considering the time we still have until we reach Tethys Epsilon which, incidentally, we will reach before it crosses the Romulan border, I thought it best time to convene a staff dinner, where we can... repair! certain states of relations, discuss the delicate situation ahead that we'll soon become embroiled in, and get to know each other better. "Ensign," he got Kauri's attention, "Was the Enzio your first choice of assignment?" <Tag Kauri>While the engineering crews in the shuttlebay continued picking out the machinery from the unmanned Romulan scout's cockpit section - the ship now temporarily rendered harmless - Ghes wondered about how to patch things up with the Ambassador. He'd given him leave to contact the Klingon Ambassador in the adjoining sector - this region being at the meeting point of the UFP, the Klingon, and the Romulan Empire's space. Tethys Epsilon really was a frontier world of potentially great interest to all three factions. They wouldn't let any Klingon annexation of the world take place, whether in Federation territory or Romulan, though Ghes feared what would happen to the populace if it was allowed to fall under the Star Empire's protection once it crossed into Romulan space. The last information they had on the Klingon science ship heading to Tethys to acquire Delta-silica crystals for their disruptors - courtesy of Federation long-range listening posts - was that it'd arrived in the system but was keeping its distance from the planet itself. It was of course violating Federation space, and while allies, their presence there was to be strongly questioned. Were they just waiting for Tethys to drift into Romulan territory? As the rest of the senior staff began arriving, the table was laid and attendants stood by to serve courses and refill drinks as necessary. Ghes prepared to make his introductory speech again. <Tag All - join in and start eating! >

In truth, Tiana did not really want to attend a formal or even semi-formal dinner. Still with a new crew ate to get to know it wouldn't be too bad. Tiana knew she would have to make an effort to be sociable, it just wasn't something that had ever come particularly naturally to her. She nodded in response to Ghes's request.
She had time to return to her quarters and get a quick shower and a clean uniform. She decided that this was the safest option since it appeared that Ghes had chosen to combine a briefing with the meal so she was still on duty. In an effort to be a little less formal than usual she left her hair out of its usual braid and instead spent five minutes in front of a mirror pinning it up into a much less severe arrangement where it was doubled over and clear of her face but still hung past her shoulders. The doors hissed open and Tiana entered to find that she was apparently only the third to arrive. Ghes was mid guestured but he turned to look at her. "Yes, yes, make yourself at home. It's not the usual briefing, though it may turn that way later on." . Tiana chose the seat opposite Ensign Tahana and settled in as Ghes talked to the other woman.

With the meal in full swing, most of the staff and guests halfway through their main courses, Ghes decided it was time to recall the reasons for their meeting, "It really was the best time to convene this dinner, we can... repair our relations, work out what we will do once we reach Tethys Epsilon, and most importantly - well perhaps, second most importantly - find out more about each other.
"We have the Ensign here, who is new, and Commander Daya, who has recently returned to us. We also have Ambassador Tedak, diplomatic attache for this mission - his appointment took me off guard I must admit, appearing as if by some arcane magic at the back of the bridge - to negotiate a potential Klingon withdrawal from Tethys Epsilon that, very soon now, will cross the border into Romulan space."
The staff, who apparently already knew all this, variously turned their heads towards him bemused, continued with their meals and conversation (patently ignoring their Commanding Officer but with good reason), or glanced at the wall-mounted chronometer wondering when the torture would be over, and if the Denobulan CO had seen to it that a dessert would be served. Of that, Ghes thought, they could have no doubt.
Kauri seemed content talking to Tiana who sat opposite her. Ghes sipped at his synthehol and watched the two from just above his glass: he was glad that Tiana seemed to be fully recovered from her ordeal with her symbiont, and that Cet too was healthy. It'd been a close call. Likewise, Kauri - despite the order Ghes had made to her to kill the Ambassador, who sat not far away - seemed to have recovered from whatever frayed nerves she may have had in the aftermath.
Both Saryn and Savin had been invited, too, and sat near the far end of the table from Ghes, with Commander Daya opposite them.
He finished the rest of the course before standing with his glass, offering a toast, "My crew, I'm very proud of you all. We have a diplomatically perilous assignment ahead of us, complicated by the accident in the shuttlebay - it seems the Tal Shiar, or a rogue faction within that organisation, wish to destroy us. Whatever lies ahead of us at Tethys Epsilon, I know you'll give your all in protection of the Federation-Romulan colony the Ambassador asserts inhabits the planet. We must do our utmost to ensure the safety of the Federation citizens should the planet come under attack from the Klingons, and the Romulans we expect shall do the same for their people." He raised his glass, "To us."
<Tag All> - I'm going to move onto the bridge with us closing on Tethys Epsilon, feel free to write your perspectives at the dinner
"Helm, distance to the planet?" he asked, relaxed in his command chair.
"3.7 parsecs, sir. We will reach the system in twenty minutes, four hours before it crosses the border into Romulan space."
"This is a diplomatic incident waiting to happen," he said airily. He intended for the Enzio to remain in orbit of the world, its guardian while the Klingons closed in with their science vessel, and whatever other forces they had deeper in their space. He expected he would be hearing from the Romulan authorities once the planet crossed the border, which was why it was useful having an ambassador of the species aboard to explain the Enzio's presence.
"Sir, detecting on long range sensors... A vessel orbiting the purported colony world. It has a Romulan signature."
"On our side of the border," the acting XO murmured. Ghes gripped the arms of his chair, grinding his teeth.
Fifteen minutes later, as they came within communications range of the system - barrelling towards it at warp 9.5 - and five minutes from reaching it, Ghes spoke to the returned bridge staff. "Ensign Tahana. Hail the Romulan vessel. Mr Daya, scan that ship and tell me of its capabilities." What is it doing here? he asked himself, though he expected they'd be equally angry if the Enzio decided to stay with the planet as it crossed the border.

Both Tedak and Saryn had gone through the dinner mostly in silence. The Romulan ambassador had sat back and just studied every crewmember. He nodded politely when spoken to and replied in brief but mostly he just listened and enjoyed his food.
Saryn on the other hand was keeping his eye on the Romulan visitor, as well as his son who had chosen to attend as well. Saryn had advised against the younger man joining them, reasoning he was still not well enough to attend social functions that required more energy than simply doing simple things in sickbay. But the younger man had argued that he needed to be among people and Saryn knew that in truth he meant, he needed to be with Tiana.
He watched, as Savin approached the science chief and gently touched her arm. "Tiana," he said, drawing her attention. "Are you well?"
tag tiana
Tedak stood next to the command chair, observing the Romulan vessel now appearing on the main screen. "That is a Valdore class cruiser," he offered, recognizing the signature without much effort.

Aeryn leaned back in her assigned seat on the runabout. She'd finally accepted a new spot on one of the ships in the Section 47 fleet after taking an unplanned leave. Thankfully, her situation resolved itself and she returned to active duty. The major had made contact with some of her old comrades to get back into the information loop, but many were off on deep space missions. It figured though, as it was the typical happenstance. Her new ship was under the command of a Denobulan, a species she hadn't come into contact with. It was odd, since she'd met so many other cultures and the Denobulan race were certainly a large group, but she was eager to get in and meet the Admiral. It had been a while since she was under the command of a flag officer. She wondered what would come for her next.
The runabout's crew consisted of a pilot and an engineer. Aeryn, along with another passenger, were being transported to the USS Enzio. No one had talked much on the trip, other than the standard "job" talk. It was alright with her, since she'd been on the loud Starbase for too long. Some peace and quiet had been just the thing she needed. The runabout's engines cut, indicating they were close to their destination. As they dropped out of warp, they found themselves in full view of the Prometheus Class Enzio. Aeryn did not know what planet they were orbiting, but to be fair, she hadn't even read the briefing yet. She'd get the particulars once she got onboard. As the runabout docked with the ship, Aeryn gathered her transfer orders and left the shuttle, knowing full well the logistics officer would see to her belongings. Normally, she'd take care of them herself, but at this point, Aeryn knew that she'd need to report to the bridge ASAP, since the Enzio was mid-mission.
Thankfully, she'd changed already and was prepared to immediately jump in. The trip to the bridge was short. This was not the first vessel of this class she'd been on and thanks to set standards, they all matched. In the moments leading up to her bridge entrance, Aeryn, for just a moment, felt a little nauseated. It had been a while since she reported in for the first time. The feeling quickly dissipated, however, and her confidence returned. The turbolift doors separated and revealed the bridge. The first thing she heard was a suggestion of a Valdore Class cruiser.
What an entrance... Aeryn thought.

She paced the bridge of the Romulan vessel impatiently, a deep scratch on her cheek had only just stopped from dripping blood her medical officer had earlier attempted to approach her but her glare stopped him in his tracks. The lights around her flickered as screens continuously lost and regained power, occasionally sparks would fly from somewhere as more minor circuits continued to blow.
“Approaching destination, the Starfleet vessel is holding position, they know we are here though.” her helmsman said loudly.
To be expected, her ship had suffered to much damage to effectively hide their signature as such close range. “Disengage the cloaking device and hail them.”
As her screen switched to now display a view of the bridge of the Starfleet vessel her eyes went straight to Tedak her gaze hovered for a moment before she looked to the ships Denobulan commander “How pathetic, the Federation finds itself yet again wading into Romulan affairs with only that fool for advice.” She slightly shook her head and sighed heavily. “Although I am sure he assured you in his plodding way Admiral Gheskori, that he can be trusted because he such a maverick rebel that sticks it to the senate.” Her gloved fist raised in a mock gesture.
She took a deep breath. “I am Senior Sub Commander Krieala Vyaln, and before you get to the predictable posturing about our crossing the border, why don't we save time and skip it?” she looked around for a moment. “My vessel is assigned to patrol our borders, as you can see we have suffered damage, this occurred when a Klingon advance raiding party crossed our borders and ambushed us.”
She slowly shook her head. “The planet we are in orbit of is in immediate danger of being annexed by the Klingons, as an Officer in the Empire I and my crew are duty bound to protect the Romulan citizens who live there, since we are currently for the moment in your space I will comply with whatever tests or scans you wish to make to verify our veracity and we would welcome your participation in protecting this planet and the citizens we both have down there.”
She took a deep breath. “But we will not allow you to stop us in fulfilling our duty to our people, make your decision quickly, my time is not for wasting.”

Ghes nodded at Tedak, now wary - though knowing that the upgraded Enzio was at least a match for the Valdore-type Warbird should it come to a fight - as he turned back to the viewscreen, noticing simultaneously that the ship's new SMO had entered the bridge. He nodded to her, taking her orders PADD and making a point of reading over it as the acting XO ordered 'on screen' and the bridge of the Romulan vessel appeared.
"Oh yes, hello," he said, making a point of putting the PADD aside before focussing on the viewscreen with a wide grin. "I am Admi -"
“I am Senior Sub Commander Krieala Vyaln, and before you get to the predictable posturing about our crossing the border, why don't we save time and skip it?”
Ghes smiled, leaning back in his chair with legs crossed and rubbing his chin. He listened intently to what the Subcommander had to say about the damage suffered from a Klingon attack. The circumstances of this assignment - the fact their target for protection lay near the Quadrant's three major factions' common border - meant the stated intentions and claims of the factions should not be taken at face value.
"That's a bold move for the Klingon Empire to make, crossing your border in peacetime," he said. "With only your word for it. You'll understand we'll demand evidence of your claim. Otherwise this is a flagrant violation of the Treaty of Algeron as you well know."
He again responded to Vyaln, "I concur, Subcommander. And your Ambassador here, Tedak, has made it clear to me that the Star Empire won't tolerate the annexation of this world and will do everything in its power to protect its citizens on the surface. We of course must protect our own. And yes, this is Federation space, so considering we've found you here - without prior warning given as dictated by the Treaty of Algeron - any further misdemeanours will result in your forced expulsion from our space, or, if your damage is too severe to operate engines under your own power, we will summon escort vessels to tow you back across the Neutral Zone."
<Tag Vyaln>
He had the channel cut temporarily, leaning across to Major Aeryn Tavik and Commander Daya, "Ready an away team to take to the surface. Reconnaissance of the colony, find out just how harmoniously they're living and how happy they'd be to be moved if it comes to that. And call Tiana. Ambassador, if you have no objections, I'd like you down there, too. Transporter room 2."
<Tag Tedak, Tavik, Daya, Tiana>
Ghes signalled to Kauri to re-open the channel. "Subcommander. I have a team preparing to beam to the surface. I'll expect evidence of your systems failures and hull damage being caused by Klingon weaponry. On the surface, I suggest you start with your own people... Note that these two peoples have lived in peace for generations. They may not like being disturbed and it may not be so easy to separate them."

Kreiala rolled her eyes and sighed. “What part of sparing time by skipping the posturing were you confused about?” She shrugged her shoulders. As she looked around her bridge shaking her head she clenched her jaw. “If you had listened to what I had said rather than grinning like an idiot you will have noticed I already offered to co-operate with whatever scan or test you wished to make to verify my claims.”
At a slightly lower volume she added. “like speaking to a child, should have brought pictures.” The screen cut out and again a view of the Federation vessel appeared , Reaching out she took the opportunity to snatch an offered data pad out of the hands of a centurion.
The damage to her vessel was listed meticulously, “Leave the weapons for now, I don't want a misunderstanding, focus on shields and sensors.” Taking a deep breath she thrust the pad back. “And make it fast, the Klingons will be back.”
The screen switched again.
“...On the surface, I suggest you start with your own people... Note that these two peoples have lived in peace for generations. They may not like being disturbed and it may not be so easy to separate them."
Her shoulders squared and her already cold eyes seemed to get even more icy. “The Romulan Empire will not allow the planet to be conquered unopposed and the citizens of this planet will not be driven from their homes.” She took a deep breath. “As long as they are on that planet every sentient life form is under the protection of the Empire, you may make petty distinctions if you wish.”
She waved her hand and one of her officers closed the channel, shaking her head she sighed. “I am transporting to the surface alone.” She announced nobody dared challenge her decision she spun around and pointed at her second and yelled. “And get my ship fixed.”
Walking into her office adjoining the bridge she downloaded the recent ships logs onto a portable data pad, she pulled her disruptor out of her holster and left it on her desk, although she suspected that her being unarmed would no doubt be spun into a sign of duplicity by the narrow minded Federation drones.
(Will join whoever is on the away team on the planet)

“The Romulan Empire will not allow the planet to be conquered unopposed and the citizens of this planet will not be driven from their homes.” She took a deep breath. “As long as they are on that planet every sentient life form is under the protection of the Empire, you may make petty distinctions if you wish.”
The channel closed before Ghes could issue a response. He collapsed back in the command chair, nodded to the assembling away team to carry out his order to head to the colony on the surface, and leant over to talk to his acting XO, "So they're intent on protecting everyone on the planet, surely that means they're foreshadowing that when this star system crosses the border into Romulan space - where it'll remain for several years before orbiting back round to our side - they will have de facto control over it?"
He stood, addressing the bridge, "We cannot allow the Federation citizens on the surface to fall under the protection of the Star Empire, when the planet enters Romulan territory in... a little over 2 hours. The Star Empire will surely establish a presence here once the planet crosses into the Centauran sector. For this reason, during the coming operation, whatever events come to pass in our cooperation with Vyaln, it must end with the separation of our people from their Romulan co-inhabitants."
He imagined that the Romulans would've thought the same about their own citizens while the planet remained in Federation space, yet the Star Empire should know better that the Federation would never subject any population in such a way as Ghes suspected the Romulans would. Besides, Starfleet had only just rediscovered the system and learnt of the nature of its colony (courtesy of Ambassador Tedak of Romulus) thus they couldn't have subjected the planet to strict Federation law even if they'd wanted to.
"Assume standard orbit," he ordered, "Keep our distance from Commander Vyaln's ship." He turned to Ensign Tahana at tactical, "Kauri, keep tabs on the Romulan ship; if they so much as test charge a disruptor array I want to know about it. Also monitor the repairs to their shield generators."
<Tag Kauri>
"In fact..." he turned back to the viewscreen, "Hail them..." Kauri confirmed receipt of hail. "Open a channel." The Romulan bridge appeared on the screen, the man in the centre chair perking up. Ghes held a PADD up, pretending to read off the data provided to them by Vyaln on her ship's reasons for being here, "Romulan first officer. We have analysed your report on the reasons for your damage and accept your explanation. We notice, that you have been having some difficulty recharging your shield generators and realigning your artificial quantum singularity. If you wish, I can have a team of engineers beamed aboard to assist in your repairs."

Aeryn hadn't so much as checked a phaser rifle before she was thrust into the action, which was a standard she expected of herself when joining any new ship. It wasn't that she didn't trust the crew of the Enzio to keep things up, it was just force of habit. The away team began to congregate on the bridge before they made their way to the planet. At any point, they needed the most up to date information. So far the team consisted of herself, Commander Daya, Ambassador Tedak, and Commander Cet. Having been given clearance to beam down to the planet, Aeryn gathered with the team and proceeded to the transporter room. On the way, she decided it was best to speak to her new team.
"Major Aeryn Tavik. I just got here."

They entered the transporter room and approached the pad. "Since we're going in full recon mode, I recommend we beam down to this locale." She indicated a small rock formation that appeared to be reasonably covered. She took her place on the pad and when all had gathered, said, "energize!"
The away team materialized onto the desert planet in a patch of rock formations. It had been selected for its seclusion so as to not arouse suspicion from the locals. The settlement was approximately two clicks to the west on the level land. They could, however, maintain a fairly strong vantage point from within the rock formations. Aeryn immediately took out the scope and visually scanned across the colony. She was sure someone would deal with the tricorder nonsense. The colony itself was rather bustling, for a planet that had been deemed lifeless. Though "industrialized" wouldn't be the word Aeryn would use, there were a plethora of large buildings and houses. The colony seemed to focus around a central courtyard, a circular area that seemed equidistant from all points around it. In the center was a prominent building that appeared to be some kind of communal place. Aeryn moved to view the southern section, which hosted what appeared to be a marketplace of sorts. Vendors selling all sorts of items were present, including those that sold food.
"How the hell can they grow crops on a planet like this?" she asked no one in particular. She wasn't a scientist, but she was pretty sure the desert didn't support much in the way of plant life.

Aeryn continued scanning and saw several residential areas. She couldn't quite tell, but intermingling didn't seem to be a problem here. This was going to be difficult. "What are your orders, Commander?" she asked Cet.
