Level one six eight two
Restricted Level ::
David and Nate Massa were working with two others, they had been installing power relays to circumvent the enforced restrictions on levels below the sixteen twenty decompression level ...
"So all these levels were sealed and shut down weren't they ?" he asked casually.
"We have someone in environmental control, when the Section Admiral and the all powerful 'Committee' decided these levels were surplus to requirements, it was felt that they would make the ideal location as a base of operations, hell, who's going to look for a dissident group in one of the decompressed levels." one of the men said, sneering.
"But he can't be on duty at all times ... Surely someon ......"
"Why are you worrying about it ?" the second man asked, eyeing Tan up and down.
"Listen 'friend' ..." David said dangerously, stepping close to the man while ignoring the second who was moving toward them, "You may well be content to rummage around in the bowels of this station filling light bulbs, I'm not. I fully intend to be at the sharp end of things sooner rather than later."
"Preferably sooner." Massa interjected.
"Our 'experience' is going to be invaluable to those who know what they have in their midst." Tan finished, turning away before the man could reply, he heard a thud and looked round to see the man unconscious, Massa cryptically eyeing the knuckles of his right hand while stepping between Tan and the second man, "Take your friend, I think we'll continue our assignment ourselves."
Tan and Massa walked down the corridor, the semi-darkness of the reduced lighting making it difficult to see too far ahead. Once they had walked approximately one hundred feet both stopped, listening for signs that their former workmates were now following, but all was quiet. To keep up their cover they continued fitting the antiquated power relays for the next hour, surprised that the other two had not come after them, though Tan thought they would likely have gone back to one of the leaders of their group to report what had happened, and their obvious suspicions about the newcomers. It made little difference in the scheme of things, because as long as they completed their work adequately then those in charge, possibly including Nelor and Goras, could have no complaints. Their asking questions could be easily explained away as cautiousness for their own survival.
They had been working for a short time when Massa looked back the way they had come ...
"Nate ?" Tan asked quietly.
"I thought I hea ....." he stopped speaking as the beam from a phaser lanced past his ear.
"SECURITY .... STAY WHERE YOU ARE OF WE'LL FIRE AGAIN !"
Tan and Massa looked at each other then ran ......
A second then third beam lanced past them as they ran. It was clear that whoever was chasing them were genuine Security rather than disgruntled work colleagues intent on teaching them some lesson or other, which made it even more important that they didn't get hit in the one-way firefight. It was imperative that they escaped capture, if any of the teams were taken into custody then explaining their presence, let alone covert involvement in a group of wannabe terrorists, could prove complicated to say the least. not to mention the obvious setback in their investigations, if one of those Security were actually working for the rebel factions, so running was the order of the day ... Running fast !
David was running headlong into the semi-darkness when Massa slammed into him, felling both ... David spun to look down the long darkened corridor and could see two men approaching cautiously. he looked at Nate who was clutching his shoulder where there was a clear scorch mark where the plasma beam from the phaser had hit him.
"Runnnn." Massa hissed in agony. David looked back along the corridor, the two Security Officers were less then twenty meters away, both training their phasers on him.
"Sorry Nate, but needs must." he said as he dragged the El Alamein's Executive Officer to his feet. He held Massa up as he inched backwards, once he was in running distance of the turbo-lift he began to drag Massa quicker.
"You're not going anywhere, why not give up so we can get your friend some help ?" one of the Officers advised.
Leaning back against the bulkhead, Nate still on his feet, David waited while they approached, Mass was becoming a dead weight in his arms now but he wasn't willing to let the man drop to the deck, instead he shuffled his position to better support him. Nate's eye were shut and his breathing appeared shallow ...
"OK OK, you need to get help for my friend, he's unwell." Tan said. The first Officer stepped forward, lifting Massa's head then grinning with apparent satisfaction, it was the break Massa needed. he thrust his head forward and upwards, connecting with the Security Officers' chin. The momentum shot both of them into the other Security Officer, all three falling in a heap against the opposite bulkhead. David reached down to pull Massa to his feet and they shakily ran along the corridor seeking out the closest turbo-lift. Coming to a halt the doors seemed to take an age to open but finally they half ran half staggered into the 'lift, but before the doors could close the second of the two Security Officers appeared. He grinned, raising his phaser until it was in direct line with Tan's face.
He heard the discharge, something in his mind wondering how he could have heard the sound of the instrument of his death, but then realised that the man was no longer standing in the doorway of the turbo-lift. confused for a second he tried to comprehend events as the first Security Officer appeared, nose clearly broken and bleeding profusely, he looked to his right where the body of his erstwhile colleague lay, then turned his attention to Tan and Massa:
"Serova want's to see you." ..........
