Level Fifty-Seven ...
High Security Medical Center ::
Nia Lemond entered the High-Security Medical Center and passed through to the Morgue beyond ..... Doctor Ki Yalo, Deputy Chief Medical Officer for Starbase Forty-Seven, and Lieutenant Colonel Dupin were waiting for her:
"So how did we come to find a dead Romulan?" Lemond asked, eyeing the corpse, and vaguely wondering what repercussions there could be if the man died of anything but natural causes, which, given the hole in his back seemed unlikely.
"He suffered a single stab wound..." Dúpin began, pulling the shroud away from the Romulans upper back, before pointing out the injury, "... Approximately six millimetres in diameter, I'd say forty millimetres in length,"
"Surely that wouldn't have killed him, Doctor?" Nia commented.
"It didn't, but it 'was' the device used to get an as yet unidentified neurotoxin into his heart,"
"Interesting..." the Marine Colonel, acting Head of Security said, "... How long before you can identify the toxin?"
"We're testing it next door now, but it might take some time, see here..." Dúpin said, pointing again at the wound, "... There's no clotting, so whatever it was it also contained some kind of anticoagulant,"
"So even if the attacker hadn't managed to get the weapon directly into his heart, it would have worked eventually, and in the meantime, he would have been bleeding?" Lemond asked, seeing the Doctor nod by way of reply.
"We'll need to contact the Romulan representative," Theo Dúpin said.
"I've already done so, so I'd expect someone up here shortly..." Lemond said, shaking her head as another Security Officer approached, "... Lieutenant?"
"Admiral... Colonel... We've sealed off the section where he was staying, I've posted Officers either end of the corridor, I would suggest we activate transporter inhibitors, the Romulans might take offence at being barred from their own citizen's belongings, and I wouldn't put it past them not to try to bypass asking permission,"
"Do so Lieutenant," Dúpin confirmed as his commbadge chirped to life:
=^= Colonel Dúpin .. .. =^=
=^= Sir .. Lieutenant Finch .. I have a Romulan and Klingon demanding access to their 'colleagues' quarters .. They say there are private documents inside that they must have =^=
=^= I bet there are .. .. Standby Lieutenant .. .. =^= He looked at Lemond then made a decision, =^= No one gets access until we have completed our investigation .. If they are unhappy tell them to come to my office where I'll be only too happy to explain how we work to them =^=
=^= Understood Colonel =^= Lieutenant Finch said, closing the comm, but not before they heard someone raising their voice at the Security Officer.
"Have you any thoughts on who would normally carry such a weapon, it sounds pretty specialised Colonel?" Nia asked the Deputy Security Chief.
"Without finding it, no ..... It's something that can easily be concealed, so it could be anyone, our best option would be the neurotoxin the Doctor is working on,"
"I'll get my report to you as soon as viable,"
"Let's go take a look in those quarters," the Intelligence director said, leaving the doctor to his work .....
Deceased Romulan's Quarters ::
The two moved around the quarters, the standard for visitors to the Starbase, there appeared to be nothing out of place, Security was still working on gaining access to the PADD fond next to the body and Nia looked at the stain in the doorway, trying to picture the series of events leading up to the man's death. It appeared the Romulan fell almost where he was attacked given the speculation that the neurotoxin was clearly fast-acting, so even if he had any antidote, he wouldn't have reached it in time to save himself. They checked the terminal on the desk, Colonel Dúpin using his access to open the logs for the device. According to this, he had made no subspace communications since his arrival, in fact, from preliminary checks, the man had hardly set foot outside his quarters since boarding the Starbase three days earlier ..... He had used the replicator for meals, but nothing else!
One of Dúpin's Security came from the bedroom shaking his head.
"What was he doing here?" Theo mused.
"You think he told someone he was coming, because, according to the logs he didn't have any visitors. He was identified as Commander Ra'kosh, former Romulan Military. Boarding and departure logs say he came aboard from a Ferengi Trading Vessal four days ago, presumably under false credentials, We've spoken to the Ferengi who basically took on a paying passenger, no questions asked," the Security Lieutenant informed the two Senior Officers.
"Someone knew, specifically another Romulan, and one Klingon!" Lemond commented.
"You think we should detain them for questioning?" Theo asked.
"No... I'll have two of my people follow them, they may well lead us to others, but in the meantime, we'll go on the assumption this was an assassination, a small puncture wound, middle of the back to the left of the spinal column, whoever killed him knew exactly how to do it, and given the timeframe, I'd be inclined to think he, or she, is still aboard the Starbase!"
She spoke briefly to her office, assigning two Intel' Officers to shadow the Romulan and Klingon while they remained aboard. The investigation would continue, she also instructed Doctor Yalo to use the remaining time he had before the Romulan's claimed the body to run every test he could think of. Yalo said that along with bloods and the usual scans, he would be taking a small section of the termination point of the wound to study further. Nia left Colonel Dúpin in the Romulan's quarters while she headed up to speak to the Section Admiral, hopefully 'before' the Romulan's began banging on his door ..........
