With his current orders delayed until further notice, Ephrem was a captain with nothing to do. If he had nothing to do, it meant that his crew had nothing to do, which meant that they could all get into a lot of trouble. Trouble that he would rather avoid. With this in mind, Ephrem decided that he would put the Excalibur through every test possible. He knew that his ship was in good running order, but it wasn't perfect. Doing these drills would insure that the Excalibur would be running at full efficiency and give some of the new members of the crew time to adjust to life on a starship.
Ephrem didn't want to admit it, but he felt that things on the Excalibur were becoming to relaxed. Protocols were bended at will and shifts were being ignored. This would allow him and John to evaluate every department and see what changes might be needed.
These drills wouldn't begin until Mira was cleared for duty. When he was told that Mira was in sickbay, Ephrem felt his stomach tighten. His crew had a very special place in his heart, but Mira was a lot closer to him than others. It made him wonder what other captains did regarding personal relationships with his crew.
"John, please come by my office, I have some important information about our mission," Ephrem said over the comm

John had become less sociable in the past few days. Mira was recovering swiftly, already close to the incredible health she enjoyed as a physically active person. John, on the other hand, was withdrawing psychologically. Self-analysis was not advised, but he couldn't ignore his own lack of interest in his job. Starfleet had so many proceedures and protocols that had to be observed. Getting Meldova to simply go and get Giscard had been so refreshing. John pondered the impact of his newly discovered world. He had always been instructed in the traditional sense, where rank was how the heirarchy was ordered, where everyone respected each other. But now he had tasted the power that came with charisma and connections. Meldova was not a friend, he was a... contact. Someone who did what John asked him to do, not because John was a superior officer but because he was the one who told Meldova what to do, and Meldova obeyed. Maybe it was John's medical assistance in the past. Perhaps it was John's leniancy with Meldova, John's praise of his work in the previous mission. Yet Meldova was firmly on John's... camp? side? John wasn't sure exactly what he was creating, but Meldova was hardly the only member of the Excalibur crew who listened to John at least as much as they did to Ephrem. Sickbay, of course, was a close society of highly skilled people who interacted with the rest of the crew while off duty, but remained alone while working, directly saving the lives of others. A sort of elitist feeling had grown within the medical staff, almost imperceptable. Yet John recognized it for what it was: power. Some of the science and engineering crewmen owed their lives to John, and were constantly offering to help with any problems Sickbay had. Chipped or broken containers and shelves were fixed or replaced before John had to ask for assistance. Stains disappeared before he could report them. And there was Ephrem, sitting in his precious ready room, calling John. Did he realise a large portion of the crew assumed he was not experienced enough for the position of Captain and master of the ship? John knew he was not as qualified as Ephrem, but human beings are very bad a differentiating one kind of skill from another. Ephrem had been a quiet, behind-the-scenes man who kept the ship running smoothly before ascending to the position of Captain. John had interacted with everyone, earning their trust and, at the least, loose friendship. He wasn't a people person, but he did have enough of a human touch that-
Ephrem looked up as John entered the office and smiled. The doctor did not. "Hi, John. I've been looking at our crew, and because the presidential candidates have been delayed, I thought we would get this ship back into shape. Oh, I'm not saying we're bad, we just aren't as-"
"We aren't as good as when we had people who knew what they were doing in charge of the ship," interrupted John quietly. Faint alarm bells went off in the back of his head. What are you doing, you idiot? Ephrem is you friend. All that crap about you charm and popularity is just that: crap. Ephrem's perfectly capable of taking care of this ship and you know you'd screw everything up if you had his job. Can you even do your own?
Ephrem blinked, taken aback. "Well... that wasn't what I meant, but yeah, I guess that's part of it." He looked at John in an odd way. "Something troubling you?"
Like I'd bother talking to you about it if there was anything troubling me. "No," snapped John. He took a calming breath. "I'm just a... a little stressed, is all. Wundt's replacement is getting here, and I need to try and get Sickbay in order for my replacement.
"I see," said Ephrem, nodding in understanding.
No, you don't. How can you? You never had to worry about keeping a Captain alive when he should have been dead, never had to take charge of an entire Sickbay when you were just over twenty, never-
But he's the Captain now, said a small voice. And now you've got to keep him alive without any medical tools at all, by making sure he gets all the information he can, by making his ship run smoothly. Can the great John Mann manage that?
John gritted his teeth as Ephrem spoke. "Anyway, I just wanted to run some drills, get our crew in shape. Think you could get the word out to the senior staff? I think you and I could evaluate the departments, see what needs to be fixed, find any problem children, that sort of thing."
A sudden innder calm came to John. "I'm such a mess," he muttered to himself, inaudibly.
"What?" asked Ephrem.
John shook his head. "Nothing, I'll... yeah, yeah, I can do that." He turned to leave. "Oh- Ephrem, I've got a personal favor to ask you." He turned around and sat down, running a hand through his hair. "I know its a lot, and I haven't even talked to her yet, but I think Mira wants to be an officer. She hasn't ever said it in so many words, but..."
"I'll see what I can do," replied Ephrem quietly.
"Thanks," said John, smiling for the first time. He stood and departed. I definitely couldn't do his job...
***************************************************
"Hey. I'm Dr. Collin Ryan," said the young man, smiling. He rolled his eyes. "Well, Lt. Ryan, I guess, but I'm not much of a military person."
Ben Navidomskis nodded politely. "Of course. You're Wundt's replacement?"
The man looked slightly confused. "No, no, I'm Dr. Mann's replacement."
Navidomskis narrowed his eyes. "So fast?"
"Yeah. They had me assigned to the Serenity, but I got a change of orders during my layover here." Ryan smiled. He did a lot of that, Navidomskis noted.
"Great. If you'll come right this way... I'm Ben Navidomskis. Just call me by my first name. Miss Anderson's away at the moment, but she's been acting as my second because Wundt and John - that's Dr. Mann - have both be absent. As you can see, we've been well stocked..."
***************************************************
"Allison Byrd... yes, here we are. You'll be the executive medical officer on the Excalibur, correct?" asked the Andorian.
Byrd smirked. "That's right." And I'll have Navidomskis' head before that ship gets out of dock...

Mira was thoroughly enjoying herself in the ship's pool, where she'd been joined by the new security chief. Francis had wanted to join them too but he had his own duties to return to, though he promised he'd come visit her soon again, when both ships were once more in dock.
Leisurely, she waded into the water, shivering as a chill went up her spine. Certainly, she was feeling better but she doubted John would release her to her duties yet. Sometimes, she found having a CMO for a boyfriend rather troubling, as they tended to be somewhat over protective.
"Aren't you coming in?" she called to McCallister, as she pushed off on the shore, having herself float across the surface. She kicked her feet to remain afloat, wincing as such action sent a stab of pain through her side. Yet she persisted and gradually the pain ebbed away. "The water is lovely!"
Mira allowed herself to float back to the shoreline, then splashed her hand across the water's surface, effectively directing the resulting splash towards the tactical officer. "Either you come in now, or I'll make you come in," she threatened, with a laugh. "And don't tell me that I can't. I'm a martial arts expert, have been since I was eight..."

"Well of course I'm coming in the pool, seeing as your doing better, its said that pool's have a rejuvenating effect on people in general. I actually like seeing that your feeling healthier than you were in your previous state." Duke replied while going into one of the male room area's nearby, and changed into some swim trunks.
"That feels better, to air out, and relax in a peaceful environment, man I could really take after some religious person if I wanted to after saying those words of wisdom." Duke laughed then went down the steps of the pool.
"Its a tad bit cold, o well, the more the merrier I guess" Duke made himself plunge full throttle into the pool, and came out drenched. "ah, now thats what I call refreshing" Then duke swam around the pool a bit touching each end of it while making laps around Mira.
He wanted to get some exercise for himself since he hadn't really gotten the chance to. With the careful drills he ha d been running on the ship with the security team what more could you ask for.
"Im glad to see that your spirits are more tranquil now along with your ability to handle swimming in the pool. Seems the Lt. Mann took good care of you." duke replied while making every effort to have a splashing contest with Mira. "Let's have fun, Since you were the first to splash some water my way, we could have a water fight, only for now, until we get back to our duties."

"Yeah, I'll get a report to you this afternoon," said the CEO, leaning against the enterence to main engineering. "If you'd like, I could give you a tour, show you all our pet projects, that sort of thing."
John shook his head. "Maybe later, but I've still got the science department, security, and my own to go through. Just leave the report in Sickbay and I'll pick it up this evening."
His walk to the main science lab was short, but it proved almost worthless. The chief science officer was still on leave, as was the executive science officer. A lone Ensign stood at the far end of the room, engrossed in some personal project. "Excuse me," said John. "Do you know when Lt. Commander Bitterman will be back?"
The young officer shook his head. "No idea. I think he was planning to be back in a couple days, but he didn't say for sure."
"Right." John frowned, turning away. It appeared that he'd hit a snag. No worries. Just McCalister's department and his own left. McCalister was not in his office, but John heard he was in the swimming pool. He decided to check in on Sickbay before visiting McCalister. When he arrived, there were two new faces.
"Hi," said a young man, about John's age and slightly taller. "I'm Dr. Ryan. You must be Dr. Mann, the new XO?"
John nodded. "That's right. You're my replacement?"
Ryan smiled and shook his hand. "Yes. And this is Allison Byrd, who will be taking Wundt's place. Sorry to hear about him."
"Oh, he'll be fine," said John. "At least, that was the diagnosis the Starbase CMO gave. Hello, Miss Byrd." They shook hands briefly.
Ben Navidomskis entered at that time and approached John. He opened his mouth to say something, but stopped when he saw Byrd. His mouth continued to hang open. How the hell did she...?
Dr. Ryan's smile shifted into an amused expression. "Have the two of you met before?" he asked.
"Yes," replied Byrd, her face expressionless.
"Then I'll let you get reaquainted," said Dr. Ryan, as he and John moved away.
Neither Navidomskis nor Byrd said anything for a moment, but the neurosurgeon couldn't abide the silence. "How did you survive?" he asked in a low voice.
***************************************************
"Meldova, I need help," said Navidomskis ten minutes later, panting heavily.
"Sure, doc," replied the security guard. "What is it?"
"Someone is... trying to kill me. I can't say who. Just... just be ready, okay?" The doctor looked terrified.
"Yeah... yeah, I'm always happy to help," said Meldova, making a mental note to tell John about this meeting. "Just calm down, doc. Nothing's going to happen to you here."

Mira grinned as she ducked under, avoiding Duke's splash. Seconds later she resurfaced, still grinning. "How about we start a few laps first?" she suggested, "winner gets to pick the game."
She pushed off with strong strokes, diving to swim past a stunned security chief and pulled his leg as she swam past. Meters ahead, she resurfaced for breath and laughed. "Well what's keeping you honey...or can't you swim after all?"
The teenager was feeling at home in the water, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated after spending all that time in sickbay. "I do hope John and perhaps Ephrem join us soon as well. Perhaps we could have some real fun then!" she called, waiting for Duke to catch up.
He did within seconds and they paddled on. Of course, since she was horribly out of practice, Duke won the little contest. "So, what do we do now?" Mira asked as she lay on her back in the water. She was not prepared to get dunked under and she gasped in surprise.
"That wasn't fair!" she cried, when she resurfaced, "but if that's what you want to do..." She paddled towards him, placed her hands on his shoulders then put all her weight behind it to get him under. Sadly, he was standing on solid ground, so it became rather difficult. "You're cheating," she said accusingly.

John stood at the entrance to the swimming pool, frowning. He wasn't particularly fond of swimming, but the sight of Mira and Duke so-
"Jealousy is a sin, John. God doesn't appreciate when you disobey his mandates." Dr. Ryan grinned as John spun around, but his grin faded and the first officer approached him, hands clenched and teeth bared. "I could give you advice if you asked for it, you know," said the taller doctor.
The doors closed behind John. "What?" he asked.
"If you don't like your girl-"
"She isn't something I own!" snapped John. "She can make her own decisions."
Ryan smiled again. John was getting annoyed at the smug attitude the doctor carried. "But you don't like it. John, when someone - particularly a woman - feels like you are... stalling in the relationship, they sometimes try and get your attention. I suggest you talk to her, spend more time with her... and, perhaps, you could use a friend." An outstretched hand offered John a small vial. "Technically, it isn't illegal... and it might just offer her the incentive to..." Ryan's smile grew larger as he trailed off. He walked away without saying another word, leaving John alone in the hallway with the vial.
John looked at it for a moment, and then shook his head. What a nasty person Ryan had turned out to be. John walked to the nearest storage room and tossed the vial onto the floor behind some boxes. There wasn't anything wrong between him and Mira, and if there was, she would have said something. Even if there was, using that drug on her was hardly a good idea, and contradicted John's professional ethics, not to mention his personal morals.
"John!" shouted Meldova, jogging toward the smaller man. The doctor stopped and waited for the large security guard to arrive. It didn't take long. "Hey, I just thought you should know something. Ben Navidomskis, of all people, started talking to me, and..."

Ephrem silently pondered what John had said about his ability to command the ship. He himself doubted if he was capable of leading such brave men and women. John has called it stress, but Ephrem knew that those were the times real feelings were expressed.
Even with his doubts, he knew that he had to press forward and continue to command the Excalibur. One thing that he would need to keep in mind was John's last request about making Mira an officer. Even though she was young, she had proved herself many times in the past. If he had his way she would be an officer in no time. His thoughts were interepted with the chime of the comm.
"Captain Santos, you have clearance to begin your drills as of tomorrow morning at 0700 hours"
"Understood, I presume that all test site have been prepared?" Ephrem asked.
"Yes Captain, all five sites have been prepared for your drills"
"Alright, Santos out," Ephrem said as he looked out of his office. His command ability was in doubt, but he would work as hard as ever to prove himself worthy of the centre seat.

Mira spotted John standing in the doorway, and from the looks of it, he seemed to be arguing with someone else dressed in a blue tunic. The third one who came running up she did recognize, but the other blue dressed officer she didn't know. "I'll be right back," she promised McCallister and swam towards the nearest set of steps, then climbed out of the pool.
Shivering, she paddled up to John and his companions. "Everything all right here?' she asked, gazing intently at Meldova and the newcomer, then cast John a brief but concerned look. "I don't believe we've met yet, you must be new aboard," she addressed Ryan, her tone calculating as she saw something was going on that John didn't particularly like. His pose was all hostility towards the other man, and he didn't seem to hear Meldova talk to him.
"Meldova, be quiet for a minute will you?" she admonised him, "something's going on here, and I'm not liking the atmosphere in this room right now." She cast her boyfriend a mock glare. "Spill it or I'll drag you into the pool, both of you. Either that or I'll knock some sense into you." She would never, of course, hurt John and John knew she wasn't in any proper shape to do any knocking of heads right now anyway, but the newcomer didn't.
She glanced John over. "I was expecting you to join me in the pool anyway, have a little swimming competition between ourselves, and some fun. You up for it or would you prefer to stand arguing with this fellow here, who still hasn't had the manners to introduce himself. Do you always give women the silent treatment?" The last comment was directed back at Ryan.

Ryan grinned. "Sorry, I haven't had the pleasure of meeting you. I take it you're-"
"Go away," said John, reaching for his phaser. "I'll deal with you later."
The new CMO looked so innocent that John would have bought his act if he hadn't met him before. "What?"
Meldova frowned at Ryan. "I think I haven't had a physical for a while, doc. Let's get that taken care of." One of his massive hands clamped down like a vice on Ryan's shoulder and the doctor had no choice but to accompany Meldova away from John and Mira.
"That's Dr. Ryan, my replacement," said John bitterly. "He... I don't like him. I can't think clearly when he's around. He's very friendly, and already half of Sickbay thinks he's an improvement over their last-"
"Why'd you send him away?" asked Mira, unhappy at not being answered. "I want to know what's going on."
John didn't respond for a moment, collecting his thoughts. "He already knew who you were, Mira. He tried to, um, provoke me. Wanted me to be mad that you and McCalister were so... close in the water."

=^=All Excalibur Personal, please report to the Excalibur by 0600 hours tomorrow. We'll be out of space dock by 0700. That is all=^= Ephrem knew that this news would cause many groans and moans from his crew, but it was time that he acted more like a captain than there friend. John's outburst proved to him that there would need to be a little bit of distance between him and the people that he commanded. His relationship with Barbara would be a bit more difficult, but he knew they were strong enough to cross this hurdle together. With only one other person knowing of the upcoming drills, Ephrem decided to put things into motion on the Excalibur. "Everyone please leave the bridge," Ephrem said to the bridge crew on duty. "Sir?" Crewman Sanders asked confused. "Crewman do as I say and leave the bridge," Ephrem said coldly. Realizing that they wouldn't get any answers from there commanding officer the bridge crew left the bridge. "Computer lock out the bridge to everyone other than the Captain," Ephrem said as he went to his former station. "Affirmative," the computer voice said. Ephrem than began his work as he began to shortcircut minor systems throughout the ship. He made sure that it would effect every major department on the ship. These test would allow him to evaluate the response time of each department. Since all these problems were taught at the Academy, he expected the crew to do very well. "Computer initiate this command when the ship reaches Warp 6.1" Ephrem said as he continued to tinker with his ship's systems," initiate secondary command when we reach our first coordinates." "Warning, these commands will comprise secondary systems," the computer voice replied. "Understood, override Santos Theta Four One," Ephrem said," Computer disable the warnings for my previous commands." "Affirmative, there will be no further warnings on last commands," the computer voice. With things already set, Ephrem would be able to take a bit of a respite and enjoy what was left of his R&R. OOC: The problems that will occur in your departments are up to you and please make sure not to solve them to quickly .

Mira circled her arms around his waist, pressing her wet body against his. "Were you?" she questioned him, "were you mad at me for being so close to McCallister?" She knew John could get jealous or possessive, but that was what she liked about him. He at least showed that he cared for her.
Slowly, she edged back towards the pool, dragging an unknowing first officer with her. "You need to relax John," she told him, "and you need to cool off." She ducked under his arm, then gave him a firm shove towards the water. She watched as he flailed his arms, then yelped as he caught hold of her arm and dragged her with him as he went under.
Mira laughed as they both came up and she wrapped her arms around his neck, kissing him slightly. "That'll teach you," she chuckled, "now, go get those wet clothes off and join us. We were just about to play a little ball in here. You can be our dummy." She smiled brightly at him, then cast McCallister a mischievous grin.
Her smile vanished briefly when the captain's voice came over the intercom. =^=All Excalibur Personal, please report to the Excalibur by 0600 hours tomorrow. We'll be out of space dock by 0700. That is all=^=
"Excalibur Personal?" Mira wondered aloud, "personal what?" Then she grinned. "Oooh he means personnel! That's us, I think...and he does want us up early doesn't he? Weird, because I wasn't due an early shift until next week. Did he change our schedules without telling us, perhaps?" She climbed out of the water and approached one of the benches, where she kept her communicator. "Green to Santos, thank you for those orders. Now I'm going to issue you one, as tactical chief to commanding officer. Get your rear end, as well as the rest of you to the pool. We're a player short, and you're tagged! That's the order of your previous chief medical officer as well...by the way, and your security chief also agrees you need some relaxation!"

Ephrem couldn't help but smile at Mira's orders. She was always willing to make sure everyone enjoyed themselves. He was going to apologize and say that he was unable to meet them, but realized that this would be one of the few opportunities he would have with them on a personal level. He had decided that this mission would be as good as any to distance himself from his crew. Something he would no doubt have a hard time with.
"Alright, Green I'll meet y'all in five minutes, I need to change and please be warned that you'll be my main target in whatever game we'll be playing," Ephrem said as he left his office and headed towards his quarters.

Having fun with Mira was something to cherish duke thought, he enjoyed it so much, having someone to throw water at and relieving his mind off of his work schedule and just enjoying the time was something that duke liked. Mira also enjoyed throwing water back at duke because she liked the water too and she thought that duke was a good friend to play and relieve her mind off of things.
The two of them would play for long hours in the pool, and soon the captain of the excalibur was on his way to enjoy the fun. Duke thought of this proposition and waited for the captain to make his appearance in the pool area.
"So nice to see you here captain, why dont you jump in the pool and have fun with us, the two of us are having a blast and wouldn't mind if you came in." Duke replied and watched the captain nod then make his way to the dressing room.

The Andorian had finally stepped onto the vessel, wearing a dress uniform due to his first report for duty. As the commanding officer was nowhere to be found, he first began to move what he had in the way of personal effects, as well as other uniforms, to the quarters assigned to him by the way of tape.
Completing this most mundane task, he made his way into a standard duty uniform that bore the assignment patch of the Excalibur. He found his way to the science console, noting that things appeared a good bit empty. He was unable to identify the location of the Captain from anyone present, and thus, he began his way down a lift. Finally arriving at what was described as a dressing room, he found the crew..enjoying themselves.
The Andorian raised an eyebrow carefully, "We are nearing a mission, yet there is this period of relaxation? I shall not understand humans in my lifetime. I am reporting for duty...whatever that might be."
He exhaled deeply, wishing there was a more useful means to his time. He leaned into a chair that was across from the pool, motioning his white hair to the back of his head, "I am Ensign Thalin Zarath, Science Officer Prospective. I am awaiting the blessing of being chosen as the Science Officer of the USS Excalibur properly."
He again looked, tilting his head, and finding the situation to be quite...questionable in these respects.

"John," nodded Ephrem, smirking at his wet hair and face. The Captain still wore his uniform, but John was returning to the pool, now dressed in bathing trunks and carrying a towel. "What happened to you?"
"Mira... enjoys water. A lot more than I do." John shrugged as the turbolift opened and the two officer walked out. "Probably because she's in great shape and I'm sitting a desk half the time, hypocritically telling my patients to get more exercise." He chuckled quietly. "Although recently, I had a little more excitement than I've needed. Try and find a mission that doesn't involve getting shot at, if you could. And no more promotions. God, what I wouldn't give for Kwani and a well-run Sickbay. Dr. Ryan is going to drive me insane."
The familiar smell of the pool greeted both officers. "So nice to see you here captain, why dont you jump in the pool and have fun with us, the two of us are having a blast and wouldn't mind if you came in." Duke replied and watched the captain nod then make his way to the dressing room. John lowered himself into the pool, and Mira took the opportunity to drag him under. As he floundered underneath the water, John made a mental note to always watch out when he couldn't see her. She finally let him up for a breath of air.
"Someone here for the Captain," Mira pointed to a blue-skinned figure walking toward them.
The Andorian raised an eyebrow carefully, "We are nearing a mission, yet there is this period of relaxation? I shall not understand humans in my lifetime. I am reporting for duty...whatever that might be." He exhaled deeply, wishing there was a more useful means to his time. He leaned into a chair that was across from the pool, motioning his white hair to the back of his head, "I am Ensign Thalin Zarath, Science Officer Prospective. I am awaiting the blessing of being chosen as the Science Officer of the USS Excalibur properly."
John leaned against the side of the pool. "I'm John Mann, first officer. The Captain should be out of the dressing room momentarily. This is Mira Green, senior prankster and non-com, and Duke McCalister, the chief of security."
Mira splashed John in the face with pool water, causing him to sputter. The Andorian didn't look amused as she and McCalister laughed. Unable to resist, John grabbed Mira and pushed downward, using his feet to propel both of them to the bottom of the pool. He then took off as quickly as he could, much better at swimming beneath the surface than on it. When he surfaced, McCalister nailed him with a small, wet ball in the chest. He stood on the side of the pool, dripping wet with a small basket full of sponge-like balls. Mira dodged the next one, and John did his best to put some distance between himself at the older man.
"I didn't realize this is what you meant by 'ball'," said John as one of McCalister's spheres flew past John's ear.
"Oh, we'll get to that when the Captain gets here," replied Mira, catching the next one and throwing it back.

The next one McCallister tossed to her, she aimed straight for the Andorian. Startled the Andorian twitched his antennae and Mira laughed. "Aww come on!" she jeered at him, "don't be such a spoil sport! Do toss it back to me will you? Or I'll give you the same treatment as I gave Mr Mann earlier."
She smirked at her boyfriend, who was now wearing a proper swimming attire. Again she splashed a load of water at him, diving under as he dove for her. She felt him grab at her foot and pull her back up, right into a kiss. "Aww," she murmured, while paddling away in the hope Thalin would toss the ball back.
"Come on Mr Thalin!" she cried at him, kicking her feet as she held her hands up to catch the item. "Ow!" she then cried as a semi-hard subject made contact with the back of her head. A blue sponge ball floated away from her which she picked up and tossed right back at McCallister.
~~ 0730, next day~~
Mira walked onto the bridge and beelined for her console at navigations. Santos was already sitting in the centre chair, looking far too happy for so early in the morning. "Orders for heading captain?" she asked as she started up her console. "Heej, this is strange, my console's not starting up properly. I'm starting a level one diagnostic captain, please bear with me as I run it."
She swiveled her seat around to make eye contact with McCallister and Thalin. "Are your consoles acting up as well gentlemen?"

The Andorian blinked gently - tossing the ball back to those in the bathing pool did provide a sense of pleasure. Perhaps he would get over his anti-social spell after all.
Perhaps it were best that he at least attempt recreation along with the rest of the crew - it could be the key, he thought, to interaction that could later lead to efficiency.
Or friendship.
For Andorians a trustworthy bond of friendship was difficult to form, yet when it was, it is wholly unbreakable. Therefore, he looked to this both with eyes hid with weariness and with a certain amount of hope.
~~~On the Bridge~~~
He raised an eyebrow, seeming a bit cheery towards Mira Green's gleeful demeanor. He then shook his head, inserting a tape into the console, and winding it back and forth to test whether or not his was frozen. He raised an eyebrow slowly, peering into the science console's viewer, and noting that it was comprised of a black screen rather than anything that might be produced from the playback of the tape.
He leaned back into his chair, turning around, "Aye, my console is currently inoperative. With the Captain's permission I will attempt to effect repairs on my own."
He leaned into his chair once again, folding his blue toned hands thoughtfully.
As he walked out in his swimming shorts, Ephrem couldn't help but notice the Andorian speaking to his officers. As he approached them he heard the Andorian speak about being science officer. "Well Ensign Thalin Zarath, I would like to welcome you to our staff, I see that you have already met the rest of them, so I won't bore you with any more introductions," Ephrem said extending his hand to his newest crewmember. He hadn't heard about getting any new personal, but he couldn't be happier. As far as he could tell Thalin was going to be a man of protocol and dΓ©cor, something that they needed right now. "Ensign, please report to the Excalibur today where Chief Anders will be able to assign you your quarters and introduce you to your department," Ephrem said as he tested out the temperature of the water. Once he felt comfortable with the water temp, he jumped in making sure to splash everyone in the pull. If everything went right, this would be the last time they would be having fun for a while. 0700 hours the next day Ephrem had made sure to arrive before the day shift or any of his senior staff. He wanted to see how they all reacted to the problems they would be facing. He knew they were smart and from what he had read on Thalin he knew that he wasn't a slouch either. "This is the Captain speaking, all personnel please be advised that we are leaving port by 0800 hours, that is all," Ephrem said hoping that Mira and Thalin would be able to solve the their problems in the hour allotted. Within minutes all the bridge crew had shown up for their shift. It dawned on him once again that the Excalibur once again had a new command team. Hopefully that trend would end and he would do everything in his power to make sure it did. "John, the uniform looks nice," Ephrem said as he heard Mira report. Heej, this is strange, my console's not starting up properly. I'm starting a level one diagnostic captain; please bear with me as I run it." "Are your consoles acting up as well gentlemen?""Aye, my console is currently inoperative. With the Captain's permission I will attempt to effect repairs on my own.""Aye, get it done Ensign, I want to be on our way by 0800," Ephrem said with a faked frown. It would be up to them to find the problem and fix it. For now he would wait patiently. (Tag ALL) OOC: First of all, Thank You Mira. I was not posted and I'm glad to know that you will continue to put me in my place . Secondly, welcome officially to the Excalibur Ensign Thalin, we are a wacky bunch, but I wouldn't have it another way. Finally, lets have a successful mission and remember to have fun.
The Andorian nodded gently, his eyes widening. He took the aformentioned tape, placing it into the reader as he took the data slate to his side. Looking it over, and with a shake of the head, he looked back to the reader with a cocked brow ridge, his hands moving over the panel slowly. Returning his gaze into the viewer set, he leaned back up with a bit of a ponder.
Finally, the tape began to play forwards, indicating the console was operating correctly. He looked over to Mira, folding his hands in front of himself politely, he nodded slowly.
"Should I be permitted to, I shall allow myself to repair your console. However, I am not aggrieved or concerned. This sort of error oft occurs when one is preparing for a mission."
He leaned again into his viewer, examining for there to be any possibility of foul play or exobiological organisms to be at work. While Starfleet might always seem to be held in rather extraordinary situations, this case did not seem to be one of them. Rather, it would only seem that it was simply something gone awry due to normal engineering break downs.
Or was it? He was not so sure however. He began, while awaiting Mira to response to him, searching through the computer's library for any unauthorized log contacts. Inserting another tape, he soon found something that seemed to be of interest. Thus he began to speak to whomever might be in earshot.
"Exactly 29.32 minuets ago the computer was accessed by someone, or something, that lacked sufficient security clearance. Though it may simply be an enlisted member of the crew who tried to access something from the senior officer files, I care to put forth a theory. That unauthorized access could coincide with us exhibiting errors on the Bridge."
He looked up then to see who may have heard him, "However, I would also like to point out that it is quite possible that I am sensationalizing the manners and matter that this occurrence carries with it."
"For now i must depart, I have some duties to take care of in my security offices, if you dont mind, i shall be off, you all have fun" Duke replied then got out of the pool and used the towel to clean himself off before putting on his red uniform.
Leaving the pool area, Duke made his way to the Security Area. Entering he found it totally clean and the place was in tip top shape that left duke with a grand impression to his officers.
"Sir, while you were away we cleaned up around here and made sure you had this place spot on"
"Excellent work" Duke replied.
~~0730, next day~~
Arriving aboard the bridge duke made his way to his station, sitting next to his control console, then by some odd coincidence, duke saw one of the new crew members.
"That must be Thalin" Duke gestured in a low voice, then made his way over to meet with the new fellow.
"Hello there, names Duke McCalister, Chief of Security, nice to meet you." Duke replied.
"Looks like it is, I dont know what may be the problem but we need to act upon this quickly." Duke replied.
He nodded slowly as he stood up, carrying his constant air of decorum as he did. He looked to him with a head to the side as he bowed gently, "A pleasure to meet you I am assured."
He blinked slowly, "Acting Ensign Thalin Zarath, at your service. I was under the presumption from the way that you phrased that, as well as the statement regarding the consoles, that my services are somehow in requirement. I believe that the rest of the bridge terminals shall soon restore themselves."
He passed a data slate to McCalister, peering at him, "I trust these directions shall be taken as a serious recommendation? It continues, however, to be my expert opinion that there has been no ill activity to cause this unfortunate delay."
He then sighed gently, trying to give the gentleman a tape as well, "This should be a complete recording of what I have previously made record of. I have analyzed it, and propose that we may begin to get underway as soon as possible. These deficiencies shall not cause widespread damage....at least I do not believe so."
"However, I would also like to point out that it is quite possible that I am sensationalizing the manners and matter that this occurrence carries with it."
Mira just stared at the new science officer. "What?" She couldn't understand what the Andorian was babbling about, and she could tell it didn't make any sense to Mann and McCallister either. "Hey honey," she greeted the first officer, before diverting her attention back to Thalin.
The teenager listened to the exchange between the andorian and the security chief, trying to follow what they were babbling about. Obviously, no console was currently operational on the bridge, despite their best efforts. "How I wish we actually had a chief engineer," she muttered under her breath as she punched her console with all her might. It briefly sparked to life, only to die again afterwards. "Well whattaye know," she scowled as she ducked under it and yanked the bottom panel on to get a closer look at the wiring underneath.
"This should be a complete recording of what I have previously made record of. I have analyzed it, and propose that we may begin to get underway as soon as possible. These deficiencies shall not cause widespread damage....at least I do not believe so."
"And what might they be ensign?" Mira piped up from under her console, "was that what all that incomprehensible babbling was? We're simple folk, humans...we need things explained to us in simple terms don't we Duke?" She realised this was the first time she had called McCallister by his first name, and she smiled to herself. "Instead of all that babbling, why don't you step down here and give a girl a hand? And you two call yourselves gentlemen?"
Mira made a mock scoffing sound as she poked around the wiring to get at the print plate in the console; the one item that would connect all her orders to the computer which would then transfer them to wherever she needed them to be. It looked perfectly fine. "It's got to be a programming failure then, a computer failure. Thalin, can't you run a diagnostic of some sort? Somehow?"
He raised an eyebrow slowly, "I hope that you understand that your concept of gentleman as you say has no bearing in the Andorian culture. Furthermore, I do not believe that rewiring of that plate will cause great strides to come forward from this venture. I had believed that the Federation was to make strides to join all races. We Andorians require complex challenge. Thoughts before action and focusing aggression - that is what makes a powerful warrior, does it not?"
He seemed to be aggrieved most strongly, "Thalin? Is that how you were taught to address those around you? I except that in the future I shall be addressed as Ensign Zarath, in a far more proper tone. Furthermore, I believe I have already run those aforementioned diagnostic tests, and have them on the data tape that I was attempting to offer. However, it has become obvious that my work in this will go unmentioned. It is a programming error, and one that does not need be examined in the area under the console as you so now do."
"True, to be a warrior one must start at one place with a tutor that gives them wisdom to grow upon and then that person can truely be called the warrior. As for the Federation, The Federation will grow and prosper with growing alliances among other races, its just a matter of time wither the races choose to come into the family." Duke called back.
"Your work will be appreciated by the rest of the crew no matter what it may be" Duke replied then further examined the consoles.
"And you will be addressed as Ensign Zarath, in a far more proper tone, and if there were any slight misunderstandings I am sorry for the lack of judgment on my part and will see to it that all things are put to the necessary adequacy of the crew." Duke mentioned to zarath.
"If there were anything more addressing that may come up later, please feel free to come to either me, or one of the crew and we will try our best to sift threw the situation as best we can" as duke continued to work on the consoles
