Mira turned, her eyes flashing bright read and an odd expression on her face. "I'm fine," she answered curtly, smiling menacingly when she saw John taken an involuntary step back. "Really, never felt better, especially now you're hear."
Gracefully, she rose from the bed and tugged her uniform dress down. She knew the actual Mira hated the dress, and preferred the tunic and slacks, hence she'd put it on. She saw John flinch as she walked up to him, however just at that moment, Mira managed to break through. She flung herself in his arms, sobbing, crying for help. "It's hurting me," she whispered, "making me do things and making me remember. Is Zarath all right? I shot him....I didn't want to but it made me."
Then the entity regained its hold over her, the bright red glow returning to her eyes. Mira leveled her phaser at her lover, but disovered that the host's love for this man meant it couldn't force her to kill him, or possibly even hurt him. Thus it forced the host to turn the phaser on herself. "I'll kill her," Mira said, "if you don't back off."
Mira smiled menacingly again, lowering the phaser. "Oh lighten up, if I kill the host, I'm dead too, and I like this body too much. She's strong and young, she'll last me a while yet." She stepped up to John again, curling her slender fingers around his throat, easily holding him with one hand. "You on the other hand, I don't need, so you'll be my leverage to get her to do what I want. And you will never know what hit you. Zarath was just play, Ryat was in my way, she was annoying. And Santos, if he gets difficult, he's expendable."
She caressed his cheek with a finger. "You, on the other hand, are not. Rest in the knowledge that I can't get her to hurt you...yet, but I'll break her. I'm close already. It almost killed her to damage this ship." Mira walked up to the door, gesturing with the phaser. "Now leave," she demanded. "And tell your captain we're not going anywhere. And he'd better not send security after me either. Got that?"

Mira - or whatever was controlling her - was frightening. John knew there had to be a logical explanation for her actions, but his rational thinking had taken a holiday and he was now very shaken. John started to ask Mira what she planned to do, but he had retained sufficient control to realize the futility of such a question. He nodded obediently. "Right... I'll tell him. Just don't hurt anyone else."
A wicked grin was the only response John got before he backed out of the room and the door shut in front of his face. He stood outside Mira's quarters for several long minutes, contemplating the problem facing him. Assuming something was controlling Mira's actions (John knew she would never act as she just had if she were in her right mind), it had an unknown agenda. John had to disrupt that agenda, but it was clear that confrontation was not an option. Mira had stressed a desire for the ship to remain where it was. However, Mira would require some sort of power for whatever it was she planned to do. John started walking toward the turbolift, and as his plan began to take shape in his mind his feet accelerated, carrying him to a run.
Once on the bridge, John found Ephrem to be absent from the center chair. He entered the ready room, where the Captain was seated behind his desk.
"Ephrem, I've just met with Mira," said John without preamble, ignoring professionalism. "She's... not herself at the moment." John recounted the meeting in detail. "So you see, Mira, or rather whatever is controlling her, wants to remain here, and there's not much we can do about that. Besides the threats she's given, our engines have been rendered inoperational. But Mira will need power to do whatever she plans to do. I think we need to be prepared to shut the ship off - completely."
(Santos)
John shrugged. "We have no idea what she aims to accomplish, and the only way to stop her is to either shut off her access to the ship's power or kill her, which is not going to happen."

Ephrem had serious doubts about his tactical officer's hypothesis, but he wasn't going to rule it out. He was now a hundred percent positive that Mira wasn't herself, but at the moment there was no way to prove it.
"Mr. Zarath, find a way to extract the alien from Mira," Ephrem said turning to the Andorian. It would have been nice to just transport whatever was in Mira out of her, but he still didn't completely trust the technology.

"Is whatever in her capable of destroying the ship?" Ephrem asked knowing that the very same question was running through his XO's mind," do we even know what it's true intentions are?"
John shrugged. "We have no idea what she aims to accomplish, and the only way to stop her is to either shut off her access to the ship's power or kill her, which is not going to happen."
John's last comment hit Ephrem like a ton of bricks. Ephrem had always been ready to give up his life for that of his crew. If the alien that was controlling Mira took things to far and threatened the lives of his entire was Ephrem ready to make the call?
"John, we need to speak to Mira," Ephrem said," we need to know what this things wants. If we can end this peacefully and with no more injuries the happier I'll be. For now I suggest we clear the entire deck. I don't want to provoke this thing."

"Mr. Zarath, find a way to extract the alien from Mira," Ephrem said turning to the Andorian. It would have been nice to just transport whatever was in Mira out of her, but he still didn't completely trust the technology.
The Andorian exhaled as he nodded to the instructions. "Those are vague, but to the point. I will do my best, though I trust that nothing will simply be that easy. I fear that if we use a transporter beam to separate them, we will end up with Mira herself and a duplicate of her. In this case, I am sure that you can think of a famous example involving the Enterprise in which something rather similar occurred. It would be truly disastrous. Rather, I would recommend that we utilize the....no. Forgive me, I will not bore you with the divisions and requirements. Rather, with your blessing I will attempt to recover Mira's sane personality."
The science officer slowly strode down the corridor, deep in thought having left the chamber in which he was speaking to their commanding officer in. Using any elaborate scheme was not possible. He had already mentioned the effects that an applied transporter beam would have. Using any sort of subspace field would be equally as hazardous as Mira's own body could not take the radiation involved. However, graviton particles showed a bit of promise...if they were not so difficult to produce in any quantity.
Therefore, they would simply have to outsmart her.
He stepped forward, removing his phaser pistol. Taking a look at it, it was not difficult to remove the Type-1 phaser from it's pistol grip and thus make it ready for use in close quarters. He placed it to the lowest stun setting, fearing any harm that could come to Mira. He then moved to the lift, ordering it to take him to the next level down from where he was standing.
As he exited the elevator, he stepped over to a computer console that was installed into the wall, having now appeared near to the scientific laboratories. Prepping a tape that he had stored on his person, he entered the small, blue, disk-like box into the slot on the nearby console. Placing his cobalt hand underneath the panal, he quickly set about rewiring as to the screen's displayed diagram. He was clearly up to something.

Aly and the security team had been round the docking bays and there was no sign of Mira. They'd been round engineering and aside from a lot of disgruntled engineers who were still trying to restart the warp core there was nothing out of the ordinary. She sighed and headed back to sickbay to meet up with Lieutenant Mann. Hopefully there would be something to report.
She entered sickbay to find that she had beat the FO back. Dr Ryan was busily doing something.
"Any progress?" she asked politely

Ephrem knew that the upcoming conversation would be a completety new experience for him. In front of him was going to be his friend and chief, Mira Green. The only problem the person in front of him wasn't Mira, it was a powerful alien being using her body. Ephrem was hopeful becuase the alien had yet to kill any of his crewmen, but he knew that could change in an instant.
"John would Mira let anything make her hurt you?" Ephrem asked of his first officer.
(John)
With this information in mind, Ephrem opened the door to Mira's quarters. The alien didn't show any signs of surprise and only acknowledged them with a little nod.
"Do you have a name?" Ephrem asked hoping that they could start on a good note.

"Any progress?"
Dr. Ryan jumped at the sound of the unfamiliar voice. The communications officer waited at a respectful distance for an answer. "Somewhat," he replied, smiling. "I believe we have recovered all of the specimen. It has several interesting properties, and is currently under analysis. Would you care to assist? Because this is an... unfamiliar organism we are not sure how it communicates, if it can. Given the incident with MCPO Green, though, I'm inclined to believe that this thing could be connected. With your background, you might notice something about this organism we could miss."

"John would Mira let anything make her hurt you?" Ephrem asked of his first officer.
"No," replied John in a quiet voice. "However, she did mention that she had no problem getting rid of you, or anyone else. We should be as polite as possible and avoid angering her at all costs."
With this information in mind, Ephrem opened the door to Mira's quarters. The alien didn't show any signs of surprise and only acknowledged them with a little nod.

Mira stared ahead, making the captain ask his question a second time. "My name is Mira Elaine Green," she answered, her eyes shining bright red as she turned her head to gaze upon the commanding officer. That seemed to surprise the two men who had entered her quarters without prior warning.
"You seem surprised," she continued, "this host is unwilling, but I am her now. She exists, but only if I choose to allow her to surface. She is unharmed, as harming the host would kill me too." Her eyes narrowed. "And you don't want to hurt me, do you?" She turned to Mann. "She cares for you, her will is strong. So strong that it's possible you're safe from me."
Mira turned back to face Santos. "This ship will return to the nebula," she stated, "any attempts to go elsewhere will be severely punished. You were lucky I did not kill the Andorian, but next time I won't be so lenient. I am in control of this ship, precautions have already been taken."
Her eyes flared even a brighter and darker red. "Make no mistake, I have no qualms about killing to get to my goal. Not even lovers are safe. I've killed before, I'll do it again." She stepped forward towards Mann, who seemed to flinch at her approach. Her hand quavered as she reached for him, then dropped back to her side. Mira's expression was one of fury and concentration at the same time.
"She's growing weaker, soon, I'll be in complete control. When we get to the nebula, and you give me no trouble, I may consider releasing her. Until then, she's mine and she'll suffer as I do."

Aly's nodded in response and joined the doctor at the workstation. Her headache had turn into a steady throb, she was pretty sure it wasn't life threatening but it was still distracting. She shook her head try to clear her thoughts as she looked at the display. It didn't help. There was something in what he had said, methods of communication... Aly couldn't think, she remembered that there had been something she had wanted to tell Thalin, but could not remember what that was. She rubbed her eyes and then the bridge of her nose as she made another vain attempt to focus at the screen in front of her. She sighed and Dr Ryan looked at her.

"It's just a bit of a headache," Aly said. She was hoping that she would be able to put the doctor for but she wasn't sure he was going to go for it.

The Andorian froze at those words. Unbeknownst to her, he had been utilizing his haphazard system to track her. The computer codes he had entered before were to allow the ship's internal sensors to detect the life signs of the woman. Staring at Mira, he slowly raised the phaser that he had removed from it's pistol grip so that he might be able to defend himself, should it come to such a condition that firing a weapon in the line of duty was unavoidable.
"Mira, turn your head. Face me, Master Chief. Turn around and face me; for only a coward fights without turning to face their enemy. I trust you would never wish to turn your back on a fight." He squinted, hoping that his words would play on the actual Mira's pride which may have trumped over the organism that had infected her.
Looking slowly to his right, he attempted to motion his head to the Captain to evacuate while he had the chance, allowing only the science officer to be threatened by the conditions of the armament chief while he stood there.
"Now, it is time to stand before me, Mira. Should you not take my life before I am able to take your's?" He posed himself to fire, not at all willing to flinch should she come for him. Certainly, a beam would erupt if a false motion were made.

"Are you all right, Lt. Ryat?" asked Dr. Ryan. "You seem troubled."
"It's just a bit of a headache," Aly said.
"Ah. I can attend to that," replied the doctor. "If you'll hold on for a moment..." Ryan stepped over to Alyana's side, looking at her pupils as he scanned her with a medical tricorder. "Hmm... slightly lower body temperature than I'd expect from a human, but then I'm unfamiliar with the Trill physiology... if its bothering you, why don't you sit down and I'll run a quick scan of your brain, make sure you're completely recovered from that incident earlier today."

John glanced at Ephrem. The Captain worked over Mira's words, clearly about to issue a rebuttal. But before he could speak, an unexpected voice made John jump in surprise.
"Mira, turn your head. Face me, Master Chief. Turn around and face me; for only a coward fights without turning to face their enemy. I trust you would never wish to turn your back on a fight," said Zarath.
Where had he come from? The first officer's attention had left Mira and was now focused on the chief science officer. John's jaw muscles twitched as he took out his own phaser.
"Now, it is time to stand before me, Mira. Should you not take my life before I am able to take your's?" He posed himself to fire.
"Watch it, Lieutenant," warned John, aiming his own weapon at Zarath. "You are out of line."

Mira turned, her eyes glowing even a brighter red than before. She saw Santos take a step back, quite involuntarily she assumed. What she did find interesting was that the Andorian whom she had shot earlier, dared to challenge her. And even more interesting was that the first officer, the actual Mira's lover, raised his own weapon against a fellow officer.
"You dare challenge me?" she queried, her voice dangerously soft, "I see you have a deathwish then. I am unarmed, yet I could kill you in a second, before you could even raise your weapon again." Slowly, she walked up to John, reaching out with her hand to press his hand down.
"Your science officer knows that I will kill this host if he tries anything. There's no reason to endanger yourself." The red glow diminished briefly, only for Mann to see. "Please," Mira whispered, weakly, "don't." Just as quickly, the entity took control again, forcefully shoving the former doctor aside, sending him sprawling.
She barely managed to dodge a shot coming from Zarath, before she pounced upon the captain, wrapping her arm tightly around his throat while pinning one of his arms painfully behind his back. "Leave," she hissed, "or the captain dies."
For a teenager, Mira was very strong due to having trained in martial arts all her life. The captain was strong too, but the teen had the element of surprise and she was effectively cutting off most of the captain's air supply by pressing down tighter onto his throat. "I'll kill him," she repeated, slowly backing away, pulling the struggling captain with her. His struggles grew weaker and weaker, until he finally went limp in her arms.
She heard a cry of outrage, but she didn't hear who had uttered it. Then a voice came over the intercom. =^= Bridge to Captain Santos, this is ensign Chianti. I've got an incoming transmission from shuttlecraft Archimede. They say they got our new helmsman aboard, an Acting Ensign Daris. Please advise."
Mira glared at Mann. "Answer him," she snapped, "tell him the captain's currently unavailable, make something up as to why. And get rid of the Andorian!"

Edwin Daris sat on the left side of the shuttles cabin, matching speed with the Excalibur. He thought about his time on the Enterprise, though he had only been there a year, he never remembered a time it had taken so long to get shuttle bay clearance, the Scimitar didn't have much need for shuttles because of it's size, and he was a medical doctor before...well before he was a helmsman. 'Something must be wrong.' he said under his breath. "Excalibur, this is shuttle Archimedes Requesting shuttle bay clearance..." 5...4...3...2 "Shuttle Archimedes, this is Ecalibur...again please stand by." 'Good god! when...' "Shuttle Archimedes. You are cleared. proceed to shuttle bay" "Confirmed Excalibur heading to shuttle bay. Archimedes out."
The ship looked like most in the fleet but this one was different. The Excalibur was a good ship to build experience, and he could get away from all of the questions. The shuttle guided them by auto pilot, into the bay he could feel his ears pop as the pressure of the shuttle bay returned to normal. Edwin steeped off the shuttle looking around for the First officer or captain, but they were nowhere to be seen. He waited for his welcoming party, but it never came he walked to the air lock and as it opened he saw a security officer standing at his post. "Permission to come aboard?" He smiled trying to let some of his tension go. "Permission granted." The security officer said. Ed thought he had a touch of Vulcan Stoicism to him.
As Mister Daris entered the turbo lift he grabbed the handle and said bridge...Swooshhh the Turbo lift doors opened to the bridge, it was the same as the enterprise but the faces were different. He looked around there was no one with the presents of a Captain, and none of the crew members had the right rank. he walked to the communications officer and asked her to find out where the Captain was. "He is in sickbay, but I'm not sure you want to go down there right now there having some kinda trouble with the captain. You might as well go check in to your quarters. It's deck 4 section C." He smiled again."Alright. Thank you." And he entered the lift for a second time. Ed twisted the handle and said, "Sickbay."
As he reached sickbay he thought to himself. 'If the captain is really ill, it may not be a good thing if I drop by.' He walked up to a wall panel punched the button and said, "Daris to captain Santos. I was going to run by sickbay sir, and introduce myself, you know report in to the Captain...That is if you're well enough, sir."

"Ah. I can attend to that," replied the doctor. "If you'll hold on for a moment..."
He came over to Aly's side and started checking her over with a tricorder and checking her pupils. It was all she could do not to run or something drastic. A tricorder scan would not pick up the unusual nature of her physiology All the same it made her nervous. "Hmm... slightly lower body temperature than I'd expect from a human, but then I'm unfamiliar with the Trill physiology... if its bothering you, why don't you sit down and I'll run a quick scan of your brain, make sure you're completely recovered from that incident earlier today."
Aly peered over the doctor's shoulder and checked the readings, he had got interested and she realised it would be very difficult to distract him. "The lower temperature is normal for Trill" she said "the rest of the readings are fairly normal as well. A little stress elevation but nothing serious." She paused and swallowed. Even if it was nothing serious the pain was bothering her. She was fairly certain that a brain scan wouldn't show up anything too unusual and even more certain that Doctor Ryan probably wouldn't understand what he was seeing if anything unusual did show up. He'd have to scan her abdomen to properly isolate the second set of brain waves after all.
She sat down. "The headache is annoying," she admitted. "I can cope but if you feel we have time then do the scan."

Ephrem felt his body go limp from the lack of oxygen and then silence. Realizing this the alien controlling Mira Green released her grip on the young captain's throat. Unbelievably Ephrem quickly regained consciousness albiet weak and a bit confused. Pleased that the alien was now ignoring him, Ephrem slowly propped himself up trying to get his barings back.
"John, change our heading," Ephrem said weakly," we're going back to that nebula. Mr. Zarath get out of here!"
(John, Thalin)
"I've done as you asked," Ephrem said visibly shaken at what had almost happened," but please don't mistake this as a sign of weakness. If you threatened the lives of my crew again, I'll make sure you pay.
(Mira)
Ephrem knew that he had no plausible way of doing this, but he had to make the alien think that he could. Ephrem was not about to stay, but he wasn't sure if he should allow John to stay. He had almost died a few seconds ago and at the moment all he could think about was getting the hell out of there.
"John, do you think it will hurt you?" Ephrem said as he looked at Mira.
(John, Mira)
"I'll be in sickbay for a few minutes," Ephrem said as he rubbed his neck," hopefully I'll just be bruised for a while."
(John)
Ephrem looked once more at the pair before he stepped out of Mira's quarters onto the corridor.
"If Chief Green attempts to leave her quarters, shoot her," Ephrem ordered and then entered the lift. He quickly realized that during this mission most of his senior staff had spent a moderate amount of time in sickbay, something he had promised himself wouldn't happen again. It seemed that he failed them once again as a leader and the burden of command was getting a lot heavier on the young captain's shoulders.
"Nurse could you please help me?" Ephrem asked as he entered sickbay.
"Wouldn't you want Dr. Ryan to help you?" the nurse asked.
"No, he is helping out the Lt.," Ephrem replied looking at the human doctor and the young Trill at the other side of sickbay.
"Alright sir," the nurse said as she began to examined him. It seemed that she had already heard what had happened in Mira's quarters.
"Daris to Captain Santos. I was going to run by sickbay sir, and introduce myself, you know report in to the Captain...That is if you're well enough, sir."
"Ensign Daris, don't worry my injuries were not that serious," Ephrem said surprised that a replacement helmsman could have gotten so close without them realizing it. They had of course had their attention placed elsewhere. " Please drop by, I need to apprise you of the situation."

"Captain Santos Nice to meet you. Captain Kirk sends his regards." Captain Kirk had told him a few stories about Captain Santos. "What is the situation? I noticed the lag in communication wile I was trying to get on board."
"Chief Green is currently posessed by a dangerous entity," Ephrem said not fully understanding the situation himself. Flashes of what had just happened moments ago were still fresh in his mind. Even has he thought this, his hands instinctivley reached out towards his neck.
"Possessed? How is that possible?"
"I don't really know Ensign, but I want that thing out of Chief Green, she's a personal friend of mine and I don't want anything to happen to her," Ephrem said as he continued to massage his throat," that's why I want this ship to be turned around and head towards the J-class nebula we passed two days ago. We need to get there before the alien hurts anyone else."
"Aye Sir! I'll get us there as fast as we can."
Ephrem was pleased to see such enthusiam in a young officer and hoped that those feelings never waivered. Right now they all had a job to do and Ephrem intended to do just that.
"Am I alright?" Ephrem asked of the nurse treating him.
"Yes sir," the nurse replied as she put away her medical supplies.
"Alright, I'll be in Chief Green's quarters," Ephrem said as he quickly walked out of sickbay on his way towards the lift. ~You are the captain. You should have never allowed yourself to be attacked like that.~
"Captain, I thought you were going to be in sickbay?" the guards asked as they saw him return.
"My place is here," Ephrem said as he entered the quarters once again," John have we made any progress."

The Andorian narrowed his eyes, speaking out of the corner of his mouth as his eyes turned, flashing towards John slowly, "Quiet...I have a plan, and I am acting on it. I would never show actual aggression towards a member of the crew...and even less towards someone I consider to be a friend."
To be considered a friend, in Andorian culture, was a supreme statement that was far less ephemeral than the statement professed by humans. In fact, the world friend was a bit of a lack of justice towards this peculiarly Andorian concept.
She barely managed to dodge a shot coming from Zarath, before she pounced upon the captain, wrapping her arm tightly around his throat while pinning one of his arms painfully behind his back. "Leave," she hissed, "or the captain dies."
Zarath shook his head, slowly backing off. His plan certainly had not been intended to go like it had been. Rather he had wished for her to fall into a trap of pride. At that point, the real Mira would have been able to gain control. Thinking quickly, he placed his body into action, against the Captain's wishes, "Mira, think about it," he said as his feet carried him backwards, "I would prove a far more valuable hostage, would I not? The Captain is little more than an Administrative officer, while I have the knowledge of how this vessel works. You could have anything you wished out of me, and in fact if you were to infect me instead of her, you would have access to that knowledge. I would not resist you."
Mira glared at Mann. "Answer him," she snapped, "tell him the captain's currently unavailable, make something up as to why. And get rid of the Andorian!"
Zarath slowly frowned, shaking his head, "Mira, certainly, consider what I have here said. There is a grand opportunity for your kind, if you simply relinquish control of the girl."
-----------------------------------
"John, change our heading," Ephrem said weakly," we're going back to that nebula. Mr. Zarath get out of here!"
Bowing his head, the Andorian nodded, "I understand, Captain. I apologize for my vocal devices to have faltered in such a manner. I assure you that I was acting in all of our best interests. I did not have an ulterior motive at hand."
Slowly removing himself from the room, Zarath seemed rather pensive. His antennae swilved on their bases in a bit of a manner before they returned to their standard, altered condition. He felt quite defeated...and bruised.

As Doctor Ryan paused at the scanner for a moment a thought struck Aly. If she had two sets of brainwaves as a consequence of being joined then it made sense that Mira in her current state would also have two sets of brain waves. She made this suggestion to the doctor, leaving out the bit about joining and her own dual brainwaves of course. Doctor Ryan seemed quite taken with the idea.
"If we can see the two sets of brainwaves," Aly continued as fast as her limited scientific and medical knowledge would let her "Would it be possible to block one set with drugs or and energy field or something. It mean the entity's brain waves not Mira's obviously. It might at least buy us some time. What do you think?"

Edwin headed for the bridge, after the Churchill incident his career had been set back so far he though he would never be a commissioned officer, but daris figured since he had so many hours logged in behind the wheel when he finished his Acting Ensign gig he could probably make Lieutenant.
When the turbo lift doors opened he saw the view screen. '~U.S.S. Excalibur~ ~United Federation of Planets~' He briskly pushed his way out of the doors, and stepped onto the bridge. He felt the pressure, he knew the need, he heard the call... the call of nature. Ensign Daris briskly walked across the bridge, and in the door to the right of that view screen that he had noticed a second earlier.
It was the same style head that was on every Constitution class vessel, but this one was the new "main throne room: Deck 1" at the academy he had heard it called "the first officers chair" there was a slight peach fragrance in the air, that was different from the scent of the Enterprise. Edwin remembered the faint smell of burnt wires in the head on her bridge. The helms man did his first dooty to starfleet then stuck his hands in the steri particle beam.
Edwin pushed the purge button. The waste was reclaimed and the air was recirculated. He stepped out of the restroom and went to his station to set down. Relieving his counter part, he thought 'It's so much better running things on day shift everybody is so much more vibrant and awake.' he punched in the two coordinates and let the computer plot the course.
It took twelve minutes to get all the course corrections right, there were a lot of asteroid fields, and spacial Edy's between the nebula and the Excalibur's current position, it would take 2 days at warp 8 but they were going to have to take there trip at warp 6. It would be 2 weeks before they reached the desired destination.

"John, change our heading," Ephrem said weakly," we're going back to that nebula. Mr. Zarath get out of here! I've done as you asked," Ephrem said visibly shaken at what had almost happened," but please don't mistake this as a sign of weakness. If you threatened the lives of my crew again, I'll make sure you pay."
(Mira)
"John, do you think it will hurt you?" Ephrem said as he looked at Mira.
Mira's face was clearly annoyed - she'd already addressed that question multiple times. "Possibly," shrugged John, mindful that while he had been thrown down, whatever was controlling Mira had thrown him without causing any real damage. "I doubt it will kill anyone without a reason, though, especially if we are complying by returning to the nebula."
"I'll be in sickbay for a few minutes," Ephrem said as he rubbed his neck," hopefully I'll just be bruised for a while."
"I'll meet you at the Bridge in a while," replied John. Since the warp engines weren't working, it would be several hours before the ship returned to the nebula.
Mira and John were soon left alone again. "I want you out of her as soon as possible, whatever it takes," said John. "Anything short of seriously injuring or killing another... I'll do it if you will leave. What is your objective, and what do you need me to do to accomplish it as soon as possible?"
(Mira)
***********************************************
"The headache is annoying," Ryat admitted. "I can cope but if you feel we have time then do the scan."
Dr. Ryan paused. A full scan would take a while, but there wasn't much information on Trills, and if he, Dr. Ryan, was the first to contribute a great deal of information on Trill physiology to the Federation database... Of course, he would also be the one who suffered if he couldn't properly treat Ryat.
The doctor was interrupted by his potential patient with an idea that put all thought of scanning the Trill out of his head. "If we can see the two sets of brain waves," Aly continued as fast as her limited scientific and medical knowledge would let her "Would it be possible to block one set with drugs or and energy field or something. It mean the entity's brain waves not Mira's obviously. It might at least buy us some time. What do you think?"
"Yes," agreed Dr. Ryan eagerly. A chance not only to prove his worth to the new ship, but also to make himself seem better than Mann. Ryat's suggestion was certainly groundbreaking, should it be successful. Of course, Mira Green would need to be neutralized, but that would only serve to antagonize Mann further. "Yes, that's a wonderful idea. And since we have this specimen right here..." he clapped his hands to get the attention of his staff. "I want a detailed brain scan of the specimen, asap. Run every test we've got, no matter how incompatible it is."

Compromise was clearly not going to work and Ephrem didn't have much faith in the alien's promises. Hoping that Mira's love for John would protect him, Ephrem decided that it was time to end this hostage situation. Making sure that no one knew of his plans, Ephrem made his way towards the science lab where his best science officers had been working for hours on a way to help Mira.
"Captain, we have not been able to come up with a viable painless way to help the chief," the science officer reported.
"It will have to be painful then," Ephrem said as he sat next to the science console and began to work out some of the kinks in his plans.
A Few Hours Later
There had been many objections to his plans, but Ephrem decided that he would go with it anyways. He would need to stun Mira long enough for them to reach sickbay and remove the alien from her body. Ephrem had already sent the materials needed for the procedure to sickbay where he would force Doctor Ryan to perform the procedure.
His final plans in motion, Ephrem took his phaser and calibrated it to a strength that should sufficiently knock out the alien and Mira without killing either one. Fulling understanding a blacklash from his first officer for not informing him of his plan's, Ephrem readied himself. He would get one shot at this and he had to make it count.
"You've been informed, correct?" Ephrem asked of the security team outside Mira's quarters.
"Yes sir, the medical team is waiting for the all clear," the guard replied.
"Good, this should take five seconds top," Ephrem said," I'll give you the all clear."
"Understood, Captain," the guard replied as he readjusted his phaser rifle.
The Excalibur would be reaching the nebula in five hours and if things went as expected that was all the time they would need. He would transport the alien back to his nebula and post a warning buoy warning all others of the danger. With this in mind Ephrem entered Mira's quarters.
"Captain, I didn't expect......," Mira said before her eyes and face lit up in the orange glow of the phaser fire. "It's done!"
(John)
"Sorry John, we had to act," Ephrem said as got out of the way and let the medical team work," we're taking her to sickbay. We've discovered a way to force the alien out of her. It won't be pretty though."
(John and Mira)
"My calculations give us an hour to get this right," Ephrem said as he grabbed John and led him out. He was clearly surprised at Ephrem's decision, but he kept quiet. "Doctor Ryan, have you separated both brain patterns?"
(Ryan)
"Alright, we need to know the correct frequency," Ephrem said," we'll need to know if we are to bombard them with the beta radiation."
(Ryan, Ryat)
"John we're going to force the alien out of her," Ephrem explained," we have set up a small chamber that will bombard Mira and the alien with high dosage of beta radiation. Our scans and test show that the alien is not accustomed to the radiation."
The team had finally arrived in sickbay where Doctor Ryan was awaiting them and his medical staff took over.
"Captain, she might die," John said clearly worried.
"I know, but we have to do this John," Ephrem said," we have to be sure."

It would be 2 weeks before they reached the desired destination.
Having been disposed from the earlier activities, the science officer went to meet with the new helmsman back aboard the bridge. Exhaling slowly, he moved to the front to look at the man who bore a remarkable resembelence to a certain man elsewhere in Starfleet. However, Thalin simply could not place it. Where had he scene that face before?
Ridding his mind of the thoughts that were being mentioned to him by his subconscious, the Andorian moved down to stand beside the helm console and observe what was being done. "Sir, may I ask why we are unable to achieve a greater speed? Surely, we could increase the engine load by a warp factor of one and not in any way harm the engines. If thermal efficiency of the matter/anti-matter reaction is a concern, then that could easily be addressed by the operations crew."
Returning to take the center chair, the Andorian reflected on his position. He loathed it. He wished to be down in sickbay, and yet, he was denied. In fact, he was ordered to remove himself from the premises. Therefore, he took up his position at the Bridge and assumed command of the vessel...for whatever that was worth. He was a toothless tiger from here, and could do little except order scans and photographs to be conducted.
How useful, he thought.
Standing up from his seat in an anxious pose, he looked about at the small number of crew and officers who were milling about their stations in a rather stereotypical fashion. There was simply nothing for him to do, and he knew that all too well.

"Yes, that's a wonderful idea. And since we have this specimen right here..." Dr Ryan said, "I want a detailed brain scan of the specimen, asap. Run every test we've got, no matter how incompatible it is."
And so the tests had begun. Even though Aly did not have the medical knowledge to run the tests but she was kept busy collecting and collating the data.
Then the Captain arrived bearing an unconscious Mira. Despite what had happened to her earlier Aly felt a wave of sympathy towards the young NCO she had grandchildren about her age. We, Ryat did. Ryat also had had grandchildren about Aly's age.
Aly listened with half an ear as the Doctor and the Captain talked. It seemed that they were making progress
"Alright, we need to know the correct frequency," Ephrem said," we'll need to know if we are to bombard them with the beta radiation."
Aly looked from the screen in front of her back to Dr Ryan and the Captain. "We've isolated the two sets of brain waves, but someone with more medical knowledge than me will have to decide which is which."
"I know, but we have to do this John," Ephrem said," we have to be sure."
There was a moment of bustle as everyone got ready, Aly felt a little lost. "Is there anything you want me to do?" she asked, unsure of who she was addressing the remark to.

"Captain, I didn't expect......," Mira said before her eyes and face lit up in the orange glow of the phaser fire. "It's done!"
John spun around, grasping his phaser. "What the hell was that?"
"Sorry John, we had to act," Ephrem said as got out of the way and let the medical team work," we're taking her to sickbay. We've discovered a way to force the alien out of her. It won't be pretty though."
Although upset, John too got out of the way of the medical team. "You'd better work quickly. She won't stay down for long, will she?"
"My calculations give us an hour to get this right," Ephrem said as he grabbed John and led him out. He was clearly surprised at Ephrem's decision, but he kept quiet. "Doctor Ryan, have you separated both brain patterns?"
"Almost, Captain. They'll be isolated in moments," Ryan assured him.
"Alright, we need to know the correct frequency," Ephrem said," we'll need to know if we are to bombard them with the beta radiation."
"We've isolated the two sets of brain waves, but someone with more medical knowledge than me will have to decide which is which," said Ryat.
John knew which one it was. After all, he'd worked on Mira before, and it was clear to him which pattern was human. But what did Dr. Ryan plan to do? Could John trust him? He gazed down at Mira and decided he had to trust the new doctor. If Mira was not separated from the parasitic... thing... she would certainly be in danger when she woke up. "That one," said John, pointing to the display. "I'll confirm it, but I'm positive that is Mira's."
"John we're going to force the alien out of her," Ephrem explained," we have set up a small chamber that will bombard Mira and the alien with high dosage of beta radiation. Our scans and test show that the alien is not accustomed to the radiation."
"Captain, she might die," John said clearly worried.
"I know, but we have to do this John," Ephrem said," we have to be sure."
They shouldn't have stunned her. We could have worked things out with the parasite. John did not reply to Ephrem, instead showing the proof of his claim to Dr. Ryan, who concurred.
"We'll start the process in a moment," said Ryan.
"Is there anything you want me to do?" asked Alyana.
"Yes," replied Ryan, lowering his voice. "Watch Mann. He might do something rash if Mira seems to be in danger. Just make sure he stays out of the way." Raising his voice, Ryan announced, "We're ready to proceed, Captain."
