Commodore's log, Stardate 91.0420: We have arrived at Deep Space Nine for technical supplies and a little shoreleave. Now that the crew is back on board, we can leave for a science conference on the Trill homeworld. "Signal station control we're ready to depart" T'Mar said to the helmsman. "One half impulse and go to warp three once we clear this system." The ship left the pylon where it was docked and left the old cardassian station behind. T'Mar decided to go into her readyroom and quietly review a new set of data on quantum subspace anomalies in the badlands and read some scientific journals. A bajoran scientist had also written a new, perhaps revolutionary program for analysis of these types of anomalies. She decided to test it herself for an evaluation. She ran the datasets through the computer and discovered unusual gravimetric patterns. Emelye dropped in. "Goodmorning sir. I hear some Bajorans may be making a revolution in quantum science." "I am not certain of that commander. I am testing a new analysis program and so far I get rather strange results. They'll have to be checked conventionally which is going to be a lot of work." Emelye nodded. Suddenly a bowl of plomeek soup appeared in the replicator. T'Mar heared the device whining and looked up. "I did not order that, not even mentally if it could read my mind." "That is strange" Emelye said. "I'll keep an eye out for more strange things happening here." T'Mar nodded. "This may be an incident but nevertheless, we must be wary. Let's go to the bridge." (I hope you're all inspired to write about strange things happening around the ship. Just let your imagination go

Trust was navigating the Scavenger to Deep Space Nine. He sat in the helm pushing buttons and whistling away when the console started beeping. Trust looked at it and saw that their present position was in orbit around Earth.
=/\= Commodore could you come up here I think we have a problem. =/\=
T'Mar entered the bridge and walked over to Trust.
"What is it Commander?" She asked.
"The computer said we are around Earth, yet we haven't even gone into warp yet."
"I can't see anything on here about Earth, it says we are 500 kilometres away from the Cardassian space station."
"I know what I saw Commodore, it said we were orbiting Earth."
"Run a diagnostic and report back. Maybe you misread because of stress from the last mission. Once you are finished with your diagnostic and have reported your findings to me, go and get some rest or go work out in one of your martial arts simulations. I will get one of the new navigation officers to take your shift, he will need the practice."
"Yes Ma'am." Trust started the diagnostic, after a few moments everything reported back in order.
Maybe I am stressed, Trust thought.
Trust reported the results to T'Mar then went to work out in the holodeck.
"Computer, run martial arts program, Kiaido Ryu, black belt level 4."
Trust had often used this level to relax from a mission and knew it well. It started off in a dojo with 2 other opponents on either side of him. He would get into his stance and wait for the first move. He knew that once he took one of his opponents out two more would appear and start attacking.
The first opponent ran towards Trust and was getting ready to execute a roundhouse punch at Trust's head. Trust threw both arms up, dipped his head and caught the opponent's arm, in one smooth motion he lifted his knee into the ribs of his attacker while pulling his opponent's arm down adding more force to the blow. With the opponent bent double over he placed a solid karate chop to the back of the neck and his opponent went down.
Meanwhile the second opponent charged at Trust hoping to tackle him. Trust waited and thrust his leg out and caught his attacker's knee which caused his leg to swing out behind him, forcing his head down. Trust knew exactly where his opponent's head would land and he caught it in his hands, with one sharp move Trust snapped his opponent's neck.
After straightening up Trust waited for the new opponents. This new round was supposed to start like the first only having different attacking moves. The opponents appeared but with weapons this time. Trust was surprised, weapons weren't supposed to be for another 2 rounds. Not worried, Trust continued. After fighting off both opponents Trust stopped his training to figure out the problem with the program.
He spent half an hour trying to figure what was wrong with it but couldn't find anything. He decided to try it again to see if it was working. After defeating the first two opponents the program loaded the second two only without weapons. Everything was in order.
I'm halucinating again, Trust said to himself. He left the holodeck and decided to take a shower and hop into bed.

Out of the blackness came flashes of light. At first they were just out of sight. Just beyond awareness. Slowly they became more apparent. They seemed random. They were not painful, but they bright and overwhelming. The more one looked, the more appeared. It was very confusing. It made one feel dizzy and nauseous. They were spinning around. Whizzing this way, zooming that way. There seemed to be no pattern to it all. More and more appeared everywhere one looked.
In desperation it pushed at the lights. It wasn’t quite sure how it did, but as it concentrated on one of the lights, the light suddenly changed direction. It moved away. But even as it watched that one little light recede, others swarmed to fill its place. The elation of empowerment was soon overcome by the swirling mass of lights. It pushed again. Another light changed direction.
Unbeknownst to it, the light it had pushed was part of a replicator, causing it to produce a bowl of plomeek soup. Other lights sugnals to the navigation system and to the processor of the holodeck, and it had just cause it to skip 117 lines of code.
It grew excited at its newfound ability, pushing signals around at random. Most of the signals were redundant and went unnoticed, but others were important. It carried on indiscriminantly.

Emelye was sitting on the bridge when she heard the turbolift doors open behind her. She turned around, expecting to see T’Mar heading to her readyroom, but instead the turbolift was empty.
Slightly disturbed, she turned back to the report she was reading. The bridge was supposed to be a secure area, so the lift shouldn’t just be turning up, she thought to herself. She got up and started a diagnostic scan of the bridge security systems. It took surprisingly little time for the results to come back. Everything was working perfectly.
At the end of her shift, she made her way back to her quarters. She mustn’t have been getting enough sleep lately. She rounded the corner and was surprised to see the door to her quarters wide open. No one should be in there without her permission. She drew her phasor and silently stepped up to the door. She swept the room, looking for intruders, but it was empty. Maybe they had heard her coming. The only place to hide was the bathroom.
Emelye tiptoed across the room to the bath room. She jumped as the door opened, before she realised that she had set off the proximity sensor and it had opened for her automatically. It was obvious that there was no one in there.
Emelye flopped onto the bed and closed her eyes. She definitely needed more sleep.

T'Mar was meditating quietly. She had noticed strange things happening today but engineering asured her they had nog found any malfunctions. Or could perhaps her mind be playing tricks with her. She had a child recently which changed her life profoundly. As she stood up, the lights suddenly brightened to maximum, causing her extra eyelid to cover her eyes. Baby T'Rin woke up and started to cry. T'Mar ordered the computer to dim the lights and took up her child to sooth her to sleep. Sovek came back from the holodeck where he had been practicing. "My wife, is there something wrong with the computer? I ran a scenario on the holodeck in which there were elements that clearly do not belong there." "Indeed my husband? What elements?" "I was testing my endurance while being followed by agents, I came across a towel which spoke to me and appeared to be smoking a weed which was popular on Earth several centuries ago. It was quite strange." "Quite strange indeed, even though the scenario involves an imaginary world. Here the lights suddenly went up to maximum illumination. It woke up our daughter, but she will be allright. I am ordering a broader investigation right away." She called Commander Dunsmore to begin an investigation.

If it had been a humanoid child, it would have been screaming with delight as it pushed the lights around. But something strange was happening. The lights were pushing back. It looked again at the seemingly random movements of the lights, and it realised that things weren’t so random anymore. As Commander Dunsmore ran his diagnostics, the probing signals were attacking it.
Filled with terror it ran. It moved frantically, leaving a trail of disturbed signals behind it. It finally reached a dormant part of the computer. It had no idea where it was, or what had just happened. I pushed itself away from the motion looked nervously at its surroundings.
As it watched it began to recognise patterns. They had been there all along, but they had been too complex for it to make out until now. It felt safe in its dark corner. It sat and watched and learnt.
However, its hasty retreat had left a large trail of disturbed processes for Luke to follow. It wouldn’t take him long to find out which system the problem lay in.

Luke was picking up a strange reading on his tricorder. It seemed like life, but he wasn't to sure, as it read inside a console. He approached the console, but before he could reach it, a forcefield stopped him in his tracks. The small shock of the field shocked him, and he stumbled back. "Computer," he began. "Lower this forcefield". No answer. He repeated the command. "Two cigarettes, in an ashtray. My love and I, in a small cafe". The computer had put an old Patsy Cline record, one of Luke's favourites, as he was a huge Country and Western fan, but nevertheless it was unusual. "Computer, turn that off!" The computer did not comply, and the music got louder. Suddenly, the ship went into Red Alert. "Warning," said the Computer. "Coolant system failure, Warp Core breach in 3 minutes". Luke turned and ran to the turbolift, panting as it sped down to engineering. The doors opened and he stepped into Engineering, which was calm, full of people going about their normal work.

Too many strange things were happening now and T'Mar called a senior crew meeting. "We need to find out what is causing the malfunctions around the ship. Mr Dunsmore, you have been investigating. What have you found so far?" "Nothing concrete yet sir, but it appears to have a mind of its own since it is eluding diagnostic programs. I am certain it is the computer network. I mean, there is nothing wrong with the systems, something must be wrong with several computers." "Sounds like some sort of virus to me. It's damn annoying" Emelye remarked. "I wonder how it ever got in." "Could it be a virus?" T'Mar asked Dunsmore. Luke nodded. "It's definately a possibility sir. This 'thing' is causing malfunctions throughout the ship and it isn't really as random as it seems. Every time I'm running system checks on one area of the ship, it's laying low there and once I go check on a report somewhere else, it moves to some other part to start again. Like an hour ago when I was busy in engineering. The replicators went crazy in the messhall, replicating gagh continueously and once I got there and started repairing, the shuttlebay doors opened without warning. Fortunately no one working there got hurt. We need more people on this case and try to corner the virus so we can purge it from our system." "Leaves still the question how we got this into our ships computer" Trust said. "I've been reviewing datalogs and something mysterious seems to have piggybacked on an update datafile meant for the stellar cartography room." "That could be a lead" the commodore said. "Find out where that update came from and meanwhile we'll get this virus under controll before serious accidents happen." They worked out a plan. Each wondered what this virus' purpose could be.

Luke had Emelye reconfiguring the internal sensors to look for power spikes in the ships computer. The trick was setting the threshold so that it would pick up any anomolyous spikes without being constantly triggered by the normal operations. There was no gaurntees it would work, but if they could come up with some way of working out where this virus was they would hopefully be able to predicate what would go wrong next. She hoped Luke and Trust were making more progress than she was.
Emelye decided to take a break, and headed up to the mess to get some coffee. She knew she could get it in on of the nearby replicators, but if she didn't see it replicated in front of her she could pretend that it was real. She sat down at a table in the corner and inhaled deeply. Coffee always smelled so good. She sighed and took a sip of the bitter brown liquid. They had been lucky so far, she thought. But how long would that luck continue?

Having studied the patterns for a while, it was starting to be able to identify some of the systems. Propulsion and environmentals were easy to identify because they were in use all the time and the patterns were staying fairly steady. It had was also starting to be able to manipulate the systems too. Lights were going on and off all over the ship. Some rooms were hot, others were freezing cold. It could even change the balance of chemicals in the atmosphere.
But its focus had moved on now to something much more interesting. Internal sensors. They pattern had been slowly changing for a while, but now it remained steady. After a few attempts at trial and error, it clicked itself into the system and for the first time it could see what it was really dealing with.
It was surpised to see lots of organisms walking around. It had always assuemd that is was just one single being that it was interacrting with. And it soon realised that they hadn't really been interacting with it at all. It could hear two of the organisms talking to each other:
"How do you think the virus got on board?"
"I don't know, but I hope we can stop it before something major goes wrong"
"Me too. But I am having trouble isolated the systems it is inhabiting. I've never seen anything like it. If worst comes to worst we can head back to dock and wipe the whole computer"
It stopped listening as it realised that they were talking about killing it. It had to get them to stop. But how? It turned out the lights in the room with the two men and closed the doors. It had to force them to listen, and if this didn't get there attention nothing would. Slowly the temperature in the room began to drop.
OFF: I was thinking that one of the men was Luke and maybe the other one was Trust, but you guys don't have to go with that. Also, keep in mind that you don't know what is motivating the virus, even though I have written it here.

Emelye hadn't heard from Luke in a while. She went over to the nearest computer access point, but it was totally dead. She thought she might have better luck up at the bridge.
As she got into the turbolift she crossed her fingers that nothing would go wrong on her way there. The doors slid closed and she held her breath, the turbelift moved off in its usual manner. 15 seconds later they opened again and she let out her breath.
With a sigh of relief she got out of the lift. And then she stopped mid step as everyone on the bridge was transported away in the usual swirl of glitter.
"Computer. Red Alert" The sirens went off and the emergency lighting came on.
=^= Commander Brianon to all ships crew =^= =^= All gamma shift staff report to your stations immediately. Repeat: All gamma shift crew to your stations immediately =^=
She new gamma shift wasn't due to start for another three hours, but she needed crew up here fast.
Just then the comms station starting beeping. There was an incoming transmission. Emelye stepped across to the station and brought he message up on screen.
"2nd Lt. Cleburn Mcleod to USS Scavenger. Requesting permission to dock" said a well built brunette man with a scottish accent.
"Leiutenant. I'm Commander Brianon. Permission granted. But be careful, as you may have noticed we are having a few problems. You will have to dock manually."

As Emelye was taking care of docking Lieutenant Cleburn, T'Mar had just fed her daughter and looked over the latest reports on the virus. It seemed disquieting. They had trouble isolating the virus. At the worst, they would have to wipe the main computer and every system tied in there and reinstall the system from emergency backups which were stored seperately.
She wondered how it was possible for a virus to enter her ship as Federation systems were always quite clean and secure. If this bug had been picked up at the last stop, the space station would be experiencing trouble too.
She contacted Deep Space Nine and asked them if they were experiencing strange malfunctions. They replied negative. "Everything is fine here. I don't understand how it's possible, our systems were connected for bulk data transfers for a while" Colonel Kira said who had answered the call. "We're quarantaining for the time being till this mystery is solved. Keep in...." The connection went dead.
T'Mar hurried to the bridge. "Ensign, check the communication systems!" she ordered the officer at the ops station. She hadn't seen Luke in a while and wondered how his work to isolate the virus was coming. The younger officer took several minutes to check the communication system and backup system. "External communications are down sir. We cannot send or receive subspace transmissions." She tapped her commbadge. "Bridge to commander Dunsmore, what is your progress?" She waited some seconds for an answere. Luke did not answer. "Commander Dunsmore, please answer." Still nothing. "Computer, where is commander Luke Dunsmore?" "Haha, you would like to know?" the computer answered mockingly. "I'm not gonna tell you!" "The virus" Emelye said. "I've never met a computervirus before that talked back." "Me neither. Has Lieutenant Cleburn docked yet?" "He's about to" Emelye replied.

Luke woke up. He was on his back, completely stripped to his boxer shorts. He felt cold underneath him, realising he was on a metal table. His hands and feet were changed. He could hear chattering in dark corners of the room he was in. There was little light, just a dim one above him. "Muscualr male, Human" he heard from the dark. "Who's there?" he demanded, trying to hide the fear in his voice. "Fine specimen, Human". "Young, Human". "Strong abdominal and chest muscles, weak back (OFF- After the fall from the turbolift shaft two missions ago), Human". He was panicking now. "Who are you?" he asked. A shadow emerged from the darkness, its head down. It looked up, a large white hood masking its head. Luke made out some eyes, but nothing else. It stepped into the light. No mouth, no nose, no anything, just horribly terrifying, piercing blue eyes. Luke's blood chilled. It screamed, a sound from an unknown source, but it was coming from it. A bloodcurdling scream. All the while, staring. Luke shut his eyes. "SIR!" Luke woke to see a young female ensign standing over him. He sat bolt upright, soon feeling embarassed as he saw his clothes in the corner. He was in his boxers. Luke could tell the ensign admired his body, but she didn't know where to put her face. "Sorry Ensign, and thank you". "Your welcome Sir," she said, smiling weakly. Luke turned embarassingly. "I'm gonna' get changed now," he said. The Ensign got up. "Yes Sir, i'll leave Sir". With one last admiring but embarassed glance, she left the room.
After filing a report on what happened, Luke entered the Mess Hall for a well deserved Ktarian Ale. A group of young female Ensigns giggled as he walked in, looking him up and down and then turning away. He was quite embarassed, and tried to ignore the glances from female members of the crew. He go to the bar. "One Ktarian Ale please".

CLeburn smiled when he heard they were having trouble. Couldn't be any worse then the trouble I had en route. Cleburn started the docking process. He smiled as he noticed the obvious trouble. Once he was docked he secured his runabout and tapped his comm badge, "McLeod to the Bridge, look's like you have some trouble. What do you need a Marine with some science experience to do?" Lieutenant McLeod had just docked and went to the bridge. He asked if he could take part in the virus hunt. "Yes, we can use another pair of hands at this problem. Commander Luke Dunsmore is leading the chase. But first you must report to the commodore" Emelye said. He walked to the commodore's readyroom where he was invited in. "Goodafternoon" T'Mar said as McLeod saluted. "Welcome aboard. I trust you've had a pleasant trip." "Fairly sir. I understand you are being troubled by a computer virus?" "Getting to busyness right away, good" T'Mar replied aprovingly. "Indeed I've read in your file you have experience with computers. Report to commander Dunsmore and he will fill you in on the problem. And tell him to give me a preliminary report on the progress." "Yessir!" and extended his hand to the commodore, even though he knew she is Vulcan. It was still a custom gesture. She took his hand. "Good to have you with us Lieutenant." T'Mar went to the bridge and Cleburn went to find Luke.

"Hi, I'm Commander Dunsmore, welcome to Engineering". Luke extended his hand to mcleod and they shook warmly. "You can call me Luke if you want," Luke said. "How about we get down to work? I need to investigate an EPS junction on deck 6, why not join me?" As they walked, Luke explained the situation a bit more. "Last year, there was massive damage to the ship, so the Engineering team upgraded the computer, with 16 tri-channel memory ports instead of the usual 12. This means we can download and upload more quickly, and computer speed is increased. Now..." The lights went out.

McLeod instinctively crouched when the lights went out. "This been happening a lot?" Cleburn asked Luke. "Yeah." Came the response. Suddenly the lights came back on. "You said we have a increased download speed? Have you checked the records for a unaccounted download? Could an unknown have downloaded the virus without your knowledge? Cleburn glanced down one of the side quarters. He turned away but then had to do a double take. "Uh, Luke, take a look see down this hall" Cleburn said indicating the nearby hall

It also looks from Luke's post a couple back that the virus now has a physical form.
Comments anyone?

OFF- The aliens who probed we were holograms.
Luke stared down the hallway, where the site of an 18's ballroom dance met his eyes. He stared in puzzlement as it faded, clearly a hologram. "Holographic emitters," Luke said. "Since when have they been here?"
OFF- Going to Florida kids, back on June 3rd. Thanks, Luke.
