All of the Scavenger personnel had been briefed on their latest mission, and they all seemed confident enough that it would go off without a hitch. Luke shared their confidence, he usually wasn't a betting man, but searching the Badlands for whatever caused a query at DS9 hardly seemed like a challenging mission. The Marquee had disbanded years ago and the Cardassians kept themselves to themselves nowadays. In fact the Badlands probably was one of the only peaceful (minus the plasma storms...) around these days. Everywhere else was a chaotic mess of skirmishes, trade and peace negotiations and general exploration. More and more ships were being developed by Starfleet and space was getting smaller and smaller... Luke was actually quite looking forward to their stint in the Badlands, a chance to escape it all. What Luke should have learnt by now is that things that you hope for never actually happen...
"Captain. We have an incomming transmission from the CO of the Orlandos he and the CO of the Transip are apparantly to be joining us on our mission." Came the report as he stepped onto the Bridge.
So much for the peace of the Badlands... He thought. "Put them on screen." Luke said with a sigh, sitting down in the centre chair and fixing his gaze forward.
=^= Captain Drago, I am Captain Yang, myself and Captain Renta will be joining you on your next mission =^= The man before him was older than Luke, and a whole lot greyer. He had not heard of the Orlandos or a Captain Yang before and he had no interest in getting to know him or the other Captain.
"That's very kind of you Captain." Luke said. "But it will not be necessary. The Scavenger is more than capable of scanning the Badlands by herself, I am sure there is something more productive you can be getting on with."
Yang smiled. =^= I was told you would not like this =^= He replied.
"Shocking that..." Luke muttered.
=^= Our orders stand Captain, the Orlandos and Transip will be joining you. We understand that you are in charge and all orders will come from you. Let us know when you are due to depart. Yang out =^=
Luke didn't bother to respond and waited for the Orlandos to cut the comm.
"All decks, this is the Captain. We will be departing shortly, please man your stations." He closed the comm and turned to the Senior staff who were waiting for the order.
"Are we going to contact Captains Yang and Renta?" Parsons asked.
Luke shook his head. "I'm sure they'll clue on that we're leaving, plus I like I good race and there's nothing wrong with a good head start..."
Max laughed from the Helm and turned to face his old friend. "One day, your arrogance will get you in trouble." He said.
"It already has, but it's helped me more than it hasn't." Luke replied, a mischevious twinkle in his eye. "Ops, Science and Tactical are we ready to depart?"

"Drago to Sickbay is all good to go down there?"
<TAG Illito>
"Commander Parsons, would you mind giving the order?" Luke asked, turning to his First Officer.
<TAG Parsons>
"Aye aye Sir." Max said, beginning the time honoured process of taking a Starship out of Dock. "Assailant Flight Control this is the USS Scavenger, requesting permission to leave Docking Bay 4?"
=^= You are clear to go Scavenger, safe journeys! =^=

Tarapik closed the mission briefing file and tossed the small PADD in his hands. The mission itself seemed pretty routine. The Vulcan was quite pleased by the fact - it would give him the chance to organize his personnel and to improve the coordination between his teams and the marines. He also hoped he would have time for a few holodeck trainings for himself and his officers. Tarapik raised his head and examined the full bridge. He turned around as he heard the turbolift doors and exclaimed: "Captain on the bridge!" The Vulcan was then forced to lower his head again and check the status. A hail was coming in. "Captain. We have an incoming transmission from the CO of the Orlandos he and the CO of the Transip are apparently to be joining us on our mission," Tarapik reported. Then he placed the message on the screen, when the order came. Later, as the transmission ended, the Vulcan kept staring into the screen blankly. Two starships, baby-sitting the Scavenger. Starfleet was most certainly making fun of them. On the other hand, security of the mission was getting even tighter and this meant more time for him and his newly-acquired staff. Dilemma... "Ops, Science and Tactical are we ready to depart?" This took the Vulcan off his thoughts. He ran his fingers through the tactical console and nodded happily when he saw all the green lights. He raised his head and said: "Sir, all tactical systems register green. All security teams report ready. The ship is in sound tactical situation. We are ready to defend ourselves, if need be, sir..." As he said that, Tarapik once again leaned against his console. This time, he sent a message to all security personnel: "Security briefing in Chief Tactical Officer's Office, 1400." The Vulcan allowed himself to smile, when he received the answers of his men - they were exemplary and completely by protocol. "Mister Hunter," he said, turning toward Ops: "I have organized my men in 1400. You suggested 1500 for the mixed briefing, did you not? But I think a more neutral place should be chosen - Conference room 2?" <tag Hunter>

"Drago to Sickbay is all good to go down there?"
“Yeah, except for the gap in my files where your sickbay physical should be,” Illito replied. Drago, typically, didn't acknowledge anything beyond the yeah.
Illito verified once more that the ship had been resupplied to its full and proper state, then checked the short mission summary. The badlands, eh? That was, very close to Cardassia. If her brother were to be aware that she had been this close and hadn't visited, he would be hurt. But Illito couldn't spare the time from her work. Or, if she were to actually be honest with herself, she really didn't want to visit Cardassia again. It wasn't the most pleasant of places, and she couldn't understand why her brother hadn't left by now. So the solution, not to talk to him for a while. They didn't exactly communicate on a regular basis anyway.
Illito glanced over the redone verified, and wasn't amazed at the few transfers of people off of the ship and their replacements onto the Scavenger. She was, however, slightly surprised by the lack of a certain transfer: Lieutenant Avel's. Given how much he seemed to dislike working with her Illito would have thought he would have left the Scavenger quite a while ago. But he hadn't.
Nor had the conflict dissolved into any real kind of workable relationship yet, and it didn't really look like it was going to. Which meant that she had to deal with it. Or she could put it off for a while longer. But that had gotten her where she was now, which was barely talking to her second-in-command of sickbay. Still, he was a decent officer, and had even been, once or twice, nice to Illito.
Illito let herself sigh, then she tapped her commbadge. =//\=Commander Tintagel to Lieutenant Avel, if you're free could you please come down to sickbay?=/\\=
=//\=Is there an emergency going on?=/\\= Illito could only pick up concern in Lieutenant Avel's voice, but the words left her feeling like she had interrupted something important.
=//\=No, I just wanted to talk to you.=/\\=
=//\=Oh. Oh! I'll be down in a few minutes.=/\\=
=//\=Excellent. Thank you.=/\\= Illito left her office, making another round to check on the few patients that had somehow gotten injured while the Scavenger had been docked at Assailant.
A while later, as she finished the checkup of the last of the patients, she heard the sickbay doors open and turned around to see Lieutenant Avel entering. “Hello,” Illito greeted him. “In my office?”
“OK.”
Illito sat down in a chair—she had a feeling that she was going to need to be sitting—as did Lieutenant Avel. “We can't really go on working like this.”
Lieutenant Avel shrugged. “Why not?”
Illito felt slightly relieved that he hadn't denied that there was a problem, or that he'd claimed that Illito was just imagining that he strongly disliked her. “Because if we're not in the habit of talking regularly we might accidentally forget to mention something important about one of the patients to each other. And if you leave every room that I enter because you want to avoid getting into an argument with me, then the patients' wellbeing has stopped being the most important thing.”
“So what are you going to, order me to like you?”
“No, of course not. That would be amazingly counter-productive. But I am going to advise that if you're not willing to try to get to know me, then I'll recommend your immediate transfer. And if you're not willing to talk to me because I'm Cardassian, then I'll be inclined to recommend your immediate discharge from Starfleet.”
“Understood sir,” Lieutenant Avel replied, looking uncomfortable.
“Good. I thought one of the important first steps would be to have our schedules line up more, so we'll be in sickbay together some.”
“Alright.”
“So, do you have any questions you've been wanting to ask me but haven't, because that would have required us to have an actual conversation?” Illito asked. “But as a warning, if you ask me an awkward question I'm going to ask an awkward one back.”
“Understood.” Avel smiled softly. “Why did you leave Cardassia?”
“Because I was miserable there,” Illito answered honestly. “Because I wanted to live somewhere where I could help people, rather than being reliant on other people's aid. Because no matter what happened, if I stayed there it would always be apparent that I didn't really belong. Why didn't you join the Maquis?”
Avel's gaze dropped rapidly to his hands. “Now that's an awkward question,” he muttered.
“It's pretty much exactly the same question you just asked me,” Illito replied. “Asking why I left Cardassia is like asking why I abandoned my people.”
“Fair enough. Fine. I didn't join the Maquis, like most of my family did, because I'm not a violent person. I mean, I'm not a pacifist, but I don't like to think that I could initiate violence. But I'm not above hatred.” He met Illito's eyes, a kind of challenge in his own.
“Isn't that the point?” she asked.
“What point?” Lieutenant Avel replied.
“Never mind. The next question is yours.”

Paikea was very grateful to Illito who was helping him through a very hard time. In fact he was sure that if it wasn't for her he would be asking for a leave of absence. He spoke to Katie only hours before and he his spirits had been lifted. He had even been pleasant during the mission briefing.
He was now on the bridge waiting to leave port. At the moment he was the same Paikea that the Scavenger had come to know. He had even chuckled when the Captain refused to tell the Yang and Renta that they were leaving. ~A captain with a sense of humor. What is this quadrant coming too?~
"It already has, but it's helped me more than it hasn't." Luke replied, a mischevious twinkle in his eye. "Ops, Science and Tactical are we ready to depart?"
"Affirmative sir," Paikea said not really sure if that was true. His mood was better but he had yet to get to his responsibilities as science officer.

As Captain Drago entered the bridge, Parsons stated "Captain on the bridge" and stood next to Drago as he answered the hail.
Adam wondered why Starfleet had not included this information in the mission briefing.
The XO tried not to smile at his Captain's reply.
Parsons realized he had much to learn about his new CO.
The Captain didn't respond and the Orlandos eventually cut the comm.
"Are we going to contact Captains Yang and Renta?" Parsons asked.
Commander Parsons thought about correcting the Helmsman's seemingly disrespectful statement when the Captain responded.
After each department had reported in, Drago turned toward Adam. "Commander Parsons, would you mind giving the order?" Luke asked.
Adam smiled and turned to the Conn officer, "Take us out."
"Plot a course for the Badlands and Deep Space 9 and engage at Warp 6," Parsons directed the Helmsman.

"Marine 1st. Lt. William Hunter reporting in for Duty, Sir. " said Hunter.
It took a few moments for Pai to realize who was talking to him. When he did a real smile appeared on his face. William Hunter had served alongside him and Katie during there Academy mission.
"William, its great to see you again," Paikea said as he shook the marine's hand.
"Good to see you, Paikea, a Commander,"said William.
"I've been lucky, I was lucky to be placed here on the Scavenger," Paikea said," she's a great ship and she will treat you well as well."
=^=Leutenant Tarapik, See you in the Conference room 2=^= said Hunter
Paikea and William ended there conversation and got back to work. Hopefully they would get underway soon and have some fun along the way.

Chief Tactical Officer's Office 1400 Tarapik raised his head from the PADD he was holding and nodded approvingly. All of his men had stood in front of his desk in an exemplary at ease stance and were watching at him expectantly. The office was a bit narrow for all of them, but no one was complaining. The Vulcan stood up and walked from left to right in front of them. Then he stood behind his desk and shouted: "Attention!" The men's soles knocked on the floor. The Vulcan once again nodded approvingly. He stood up started speaking abruptly: "Men, as you know a marine detachment has been assigned on board. You may or may not like this, it is a matter of personal taste. But, I expect of you to cooperate successfully with the marines, no matter of the personal taste I mentioned earlier." Tarapik moved toward one of the officers in front of him. The man took the Vulcan's glance without worries. Tarapik nodded yet again. He resumed his course - moving from left to right, almost hypnotically. He carried on talking: "Showing high standards in front of the marines is a matter of honour. Do not imply honour is illogical, I very well know that. And I do not care. Call it whatever you want. There is a mixed briefing today in 1500, Conference room 2. You have the time to then to get ready." He then stood in front of his desk and saluted sharply, saying: "At ease! Dismissed!" The security officers saluted in response and headed for the door without jostling. Tarapik stared into a Vulcan lieutenant junior Grade at the door. " Tosporekum, bek-tor!" (1) The Vulcan, called Sporek, turned back and asked: "Ha, osu?” (2) Tarapik sat down and pointed at the chair on the other side of the desk. “Shi ne',” (3) he offered. The other Vulcan carefully pulled the chair sat down and crossed his fingers. Tarapik looked at him staringly and said: “Tor du my dvuboleki na’ ya’akash t’ y’sular?” (4) Sporek moved uncomfortably in his chair and answered quietly: “Rai, osu.” (5) Tarapik crossed his fingers, too and said: “U’ my dahr-svi'khartau, i aitlu du ken-tor. Du sha fam svi' Yel-Halitra. Il i. Hi i kah'ru drqual na’ rompotau dur dor fi’ yel-hali... Ken-tor?” (6) Tarapik uncrossed his fingers and stared into Sporek. The latter nodded. Tarapk nodded too and said: “Maut muhl. Sahaisau!” (7) Sporek stood up and left without saying a thing. Tarapik stood motionless a long time, staring into the closed door. Then he stood up and left. He needed something to drink before 1500… ********** Tarapik stepped forward and entered conference room 2, followed by Sporek. Inside, lieutenant Hunter was waiting for him with his men. The Vulcan nodded and said: “Mister Hunter, may I present you lieutenant Sporek, my second in command. Here are the details of mysecurity detachment.” As he said that he handed the PADD to the marine. <tag Hunter> --- 1. Sporek, wait. 2. Yes, sir? 3. Sit down. 4. Do you understand my motives to ask this of the men? 5. No, sir. 6. As my second in command, I want you to understand. You have not been in Starfleet for long. Neither am I. Bit I learned that it is logical to maintain you honour on a starship… Understood? 7. Very well. Dismissed!

“Were your parents in the Cardassian military?”
“I don't know.” At Avel's surprised glance, Illito continued: “They died when I was three.”
“Oh, I'm so sorry.” Lieutenant Avel's own parents had died, but only after they had finished raising him and thoroughly expressed their disapproval for his plan of joining Starfleet. But he didn't think he could have been himself without them.
Illito shrugged. “You don't have to be. I don't remember them, so I miss them about as much as you would miss your great-great-grandparents.”
Avel wanted to ask another question on the subject, since if they had died when Illito was three that would have been right around the last year of the Dominion War. It suddenly occurred to him that this information might be in Illito's file, but even when that was publicly available, Avel had never felt quite right reading it. He glanced down at his hands, obviously preparing for a difficult question.
“Do you have a family on the Scavenger? I don't need to ask an awkward question because, honestly, your question wasn't that awkward to me,” Illito explained when Lieutenant Avel looked a little surprised.
“Yes. My wife's also in Starfleet and we have twin girls, Carla and Madeleine, seven years old.”
Illito smiled softly at the love with which Lieutenant Avel obviously spoke of his family, but she felt a sudden pang of guilt at the fact that she'd shuffled around his schedule at various times. But he'd never mentioned it... “Then your family will probably appreciate that you'll be back on a regular day shift,” Illito said.
Lieutenant Avel laughed. “It could've been worse. Tara, my wife, is in security, and she spends a fair amount of time on away-team missions. Then, during my duty hours the girls usually stay with friends, unless it's a teaching period.” Then he shrugged. “I'm all out of questions, I think. So you wanted to draw up a new duty roster?” he asked Illito.

As the Scavenger ploughed through space at high warp Luke sat drumming his fingers on the arm of his chair. They were currently on schedule for their arrival at DS9, although they would not be docking, but Luke was still tiresomely bored. He complained when nothing happened and then yet again when something did... With Commander Parsons more than adequately fulfilling his role as FO and all departments running at peak efficiency, Luke found himself with nothing to do... There was always a PADD with a report to read on of course, and then there were the Commanding Officers of the Transip and Orlandos. They had yet to catch up with the Scavenger but they were visible on sensors and Luke was sure that they wouldn't be best pleased with his earlier actions. He smiled at this thought, some things were worth doing just to annoy another. Just like his next action;
"Commander Bower, I thought Dr. Tintagel had requested your presence in Sickbay nearly thirty minutes ago."
Max turned round and grimaced. "I am needed here Captain." He replied, eyes flashing with a hidden laughter.
"I am sure that any number of the pilots of this vessel can handle the helm just as well as you can. Sickbay." He said. "Now."
Max said no more and stood up, pressing a small command key on the console signalling one of the many on-call pilots to come to the Bridge.
"You may return to duty when the good Dr. has finished her physical." Luke said, barely able to control his laughter. He knew he should be more appropriate on duty but he and Max had too much history and he reminded him of all that had gone before it had all disapeared into a desparing struggle for existence...

Parsons began his self guided tour of the ship now that the Scavenger was under way. He decided to begin with Sickbay since he had not had his physical upon coming aboard as was procedure.
Adam was not a fan of doctors, at least not unless he was wounded or desperately in need of medical attention, but he knew that these physicals served their purpose and ensured a fit crew.
They young commander entered sickbay and found the ships Chief Medical officer (he gathered such since she was the only Cardassian on board to his knowledge). The CMO was talking to a young man with lieutenants pips. Parsons waited patiently to be acknowledged.

Paikea quietly worked at his station making sure to get caught up on everything he had missed. It seemed that the ships science teams had been busy during his self imposed hate everyone time. It didn't take long for him to do this, which meant that he didn't have anything to do.
Feeling that he should stay on the bridge, Paikea asked the computer to download all information on the Badlands. It had been extensively investigated and scanned by Federation ships, but it was still dangerous.
"Download complete," the computer said," 583,203 studied cases concerning the badlands."
Pai couldn't help but curse a little. He had planned to do a little reading, not open his very own library.

Luke stood nervously in the Turbolift. The Scavenger had been Luke's home many a year ago, under another Captain. He was glad to see her again. His successor had kept her in excellent shape, but he was glad to be tending to her once again.
He had just arrived on a runabout from Starbase 178, rendezvousing (sp?) with the Scavenger whilst it was en route to the Badlands. He had been to the Badlands only once before, during his Starfleet training, and the ride he had taken through its immense plasma drifts had been more than unsettling.
The turbolift dorrs opened to reveal the Bridge, as efficeint and majestic as he had remembered it. Captain Drago and XO Parsons stood to greet him.
"Lieutenant Commander Luke Dunsmore reporting for duty Sir". He stood to attention. "At ease Commander," Drago said. He offered his hand, and as he shook it, so did Parsons. "I believe we've met before?" Parsons said retrospectively. Luke searched his memory. "Ah yeah, Chez Sandrine on Earth?" Parsons smiled. "You played a good game of pool". "I've gotten better with age". The three men laughed. "Well Commander," Drago stated. "I run a pretty lax ship, but I expect your work to be no less then impeccable". "Aye Sir. I can't wait to get my hands on Engineering again!" "She's all yours". Luke smiled and headed for the Turbolift.
The doors to Engineering opened, revealing Luke's new domain. The crew stood to attention. "At ease folks," he said, a Vulcan Ensign clearly displeasured at being referred to as, 'folk'. "Gather 'round". The crew assmbled haphazardly. "I expect good work from you, but on the most part I like to run a laid back and friendly department. Remember, this ship cannot run without us. We have a duty to the Federation and we are the Scavenger's lifeline. Please don't refer to me as Sir, I prefer Luke, but if you must, Commander will suffice". He gave a nod, and the crew returned to their stations. "Ensign?" A young man turned around. "Sir?" "Does the door to the Coil Assembly control room still open and close by itself?" "Not to my knowledge Commander no", was the reply. Luke nodded, slightly dismayed. He loved that door...
(OC: As you may have guessed I've served on this vessel before. I also read the thread about having a weakness. I've decided that this Luke hates having a temper and hides it at all costs, whereas the dark one reels in it and is famed for it).

Paikea received the message from Lt. Hunter and smiled. He clearly remembered the holodeck simulation Katie and himself had made during there academy days. Without him knowing a few cadets and instructors joined in the fun. Paikea wasn't sure about activating that program again, but enjoying the holodeck didn't seem like a bad idea. The Scavenger wouldn't be arriving in the bad lands anytime soon.
Without giving it any more thought, Paikea made his way down to holodeck two. He didn't know what program he would activate, so on a whim he activated the holodeck.
He was pleasantly surprised to walk into a French bistro. The smell alone could make anyone stay, but it also offered entertainment and a beautiful scenery.
"Computer please inform Lt. Hunter that I'm in Holodeck 2," Paikea said hoping William would like to join him.

"Let's try this again", Luke said as he hoisted himself up from under a console in Engineering. He tapped at the controls. 'Procedure Denied'. "Computer, what the hell is wrong with this diagnostic panel?" "Please restate". "Why isn't the diagnostic panel working?" "Relays to this panel have been fused". "How?" "Unknown". 'Must have burned out', Luke thought. "Ensign T'Val, could you replace these relays while I head up to Sickbay?"
"Illito!" Tintagel whizzed around to see Luke. He hadn't seen her for years, and she was one of the only remaining Crew since he had last been on the Scavenger. "Luke! How are you?" "Can't complain". "It's good to have you back". He smiled, her warmth had always been a comfort. "Heard you're having a problem with one of your control panels?" "Yes", she confirmed. "It just won't come on at all". Luke headed over to it. "Here's your problem. This tripolymer coating has been singed somehow". "Singed?" "Yeah". He removed the coating. "So's your polyduranide sheet. The optical nanoprocessor must have burned out. I'll need to go down to Engineering and bring you up a new one". "I hope its not to much trouble?" Tintagel asked. "Hey", he replied. "That's what I'm here for".

"What is someone has handsome as you doing in a place like this?" the holographic waitress asked. Paikea tried to ignore her at first but realized that wouldn't work.
"Waiting for a friend to arrive," Paikea responded as he took a seat next to a window. He had never been to France while he lived on Earth. In fact he had never been anywhere other than his village in New Zealand and San Fransico. He could still remember the days he would spend swimming in the Pacific ocean, not caring about the well being of a department or the ship.
That had been a long time ago, a place that he would never be able to go back to. Not as long as his father was chief.
"Hello Paikea, How are you. This a good place." said William.
"William, my friend. Sorry that I was not more talkative when you arrived a few days ago," Paikea said as he extended his hand in greetings," yeah it has a nice feeling to it."
"Now what would you like to drink handsome?" the holographic waitress asked talking to William.

Luke listened to the hum of the Scavenger as she cruised at high warp through a mass of space and stars. He would never grow tired of listening to the noises of a Starship, feeling the gentle course alterations, the shudders that coursed through her hull.
"What is our ETA to arrive at DS9?" Luke asked, his question directed at the Officer who had replaced Max at the Helm.
"Approximately half an hour Captain." Came the response. "We managed to make better time than we first thought, I have informed DS9 that we will be arriving early and they have responded saying that they cannot offer a docking pylon but we are free to transport over at any time."
"Acknowledged, thank you Lieutenant. Please let them know that we will not be requring any services and that we will only drop out of warp to check in. We have a schedule to keep to, we may be ahead now but things have a nasty way of changing..."
Luke took the opportunity of the last quiet half an hour to wander amongst the Bridge Officers, checking up on work and smiling at how effectively everything was running. The Scavenger was an unsual vessel, but she got the job done and Luke was beginning to fall in love with the old girl...
"All Senior Staff, please report to the Briefing Room when we arrive at DS9 in 10 minutes, we have a few things to go through before we make our to the Badlands."

Luke was first in the Briefing room. He looked around at it. The colour of the walls had changed since he was last here. He remebered its splendour, comfort, efficiency. He truly loved this ship. He took the seat he always sat in, hoping that nobody else had laid claim to it. The door opened...
