“Jack, I need something that I can integrate into my PDA that will allow me to translate Romulan words into English. There’s no way if we run into an emergency situation that I can wait on a translator such as yourself. Think you can managed a program like that?”
He heard the question and he was able to give him a viable response almost immediateley, but he was just to angry. Angry that Saryn had sided with Nelson rather then them. Even though, Jack had pledged the entire senior staffs support Saryn of Vulcan decided to side with the [word deleted] that was Richard Nelson. The only reason he didn't strike Saryn for his apparent betrayal was the fact that he was needed on the away mission.
"Yeah, I think I can manage something for you," Jack said as he took his friends PDA and walked out of the conference room. He wouldn't have much time to get everything together and he didn't trust the captain to do anything worthwhile.
"Saryn, I suggest you come down to engineering to get one as well," Jack said trying to act normal," if we find wounded, I would like for you to understand them."

Robert couldn’t help himself but smile as he watched the anger grow with in Jack. The two officers didn’t like each other and there wasn’t anything in the universe that was going to change that fact. The real truth was that Robert was envious of Jack and the respect the crew had given him. Robert had been a privileged Junior Officer who shot up the command structure because of who he knew back home.
"And as acting medical officer, I deem the captain fit for duty. However, I do agree on the fact that he should join this landing party, as he is still the captain. But that decision is still his to make."
“You are correct Saryn,” Robert said finally speaking up on his behalf, “It is my decision to make and I feel my presence on the bridge is of the utmost importance.”
The group of officers stood silent for a moment before Kirk spoke up. There was a brief technical conversation before the teams started to spread apart.
“Mr. Logan,” Robert said, “We are getting close to the Romulan ship and I need you and the other away teams to be ready. We’re only getting one shot at this so when we leave the cover of this nebula there is no turning back. Understand?”
<Tag Jack>
--------------------------LATER----------------------------
Robert stood on the bridge looking at the main view screen. He had positioned the Challenger just near the edge of the nebula. As the gas continued to ripple past he could just catch a look at the Romulan ship.
“Ready the grappling arms.” Robert ordered.
“Grappling arms ready.” Came the reply after a few keystrokes.
“Can you get a lock on the Romulan ship with our torpedoes?” Robert asked.
“Not yet sir,” Replied the Armory officer, “Once we clear the nebula I will have a clear shot.”
“Make it count.” Robert said.
“Aye sir.”
Pushing a single button on his Command Chair, Robert opened a channel to the assault teams, “Team Alpha check in.”
“We’re ready.” Jack replied.
“Team Bravo check in.”
“Ready.” Kirk replied.
Robert pulled out a small pocket watch from his pocket and checked the time. The watch read that it was now nearly Noon with the second hand just down near the six. He watched as the second hand slowly crawled its way up near the top of the watch and once it struck 12 he took action.
“Now, attack.”
The challenger lurched forward nearly jumping out of the nebula as an old drag car would have at a green light.
“They’ve spotted us.”
“Fire at will.” Robert ordered.
Phasers and torpedoes opened up from the Challenger onto the helpless Romulan ship. With in a matter of seconds the fired torpedoes found their mark on the side of the ship.
“Direct hits Captain,” Announced the armory officer, “Their weapons are down, so are their engines for the moment.”
“Launch the grappling arms!” Robert said nearly shouting.
“Aye sir.”
From underneath the Challenger the twin grappling arms shot out and struck the Romulan ship. Robert took a deep breath as everything was going as he had planned.
“Alpha Team start your attack.” Robert ordered.

Saryn nodded, though he wondered if it would be a wise idea to be alone with the communications chief right now. He could just sense the fury coming from the man, as well as the sense of betrayal. But who was betrayed? Saryn couldn't help but wonder; it was his duty to take the side of the captain, and it had been logical what he had pointed out.
However a translator with which he could possibly understand these Romulans could be helpful. He wasn't going to let a Romulan die merely because of species or because he couldn't be understood. It went against the oaths he had taken all those years ago, it went againt everything he believed in; life was sacred, no matter whose life it concerned.
That made him think of the events in the past again; he still needed to see someone about that as the guilt of it was still trying to overcome him. He had tried talking to Kirk, but the engineer had brushed him off, and Jack didn't seem willing to discuss it either. And he didn't know Nelson well enough to trust him with this. And on his part, he didn't feel comfortable enough talking to Saberwyn or Rickman, the latter of which didn't seem to trust him anyway.
Finally having arrived at engineering, Saryn watched with quiet interest as communications officer and chief engineer worked on the translator. From the tenseness he sensed in both officers he thought it better to remain silent until asked a specific question. However, he did need to point out one thing. "Perhaps tactical descriptions should be included as well," he offered, "we might need them. I am going to sickbay now to prepare. I will meet you at the transporter in half an hour."
Leaving both officers to their work, Saryn walked down to sickbay where he confronted T'Kara with a few requests. Soon, he was packed with all that he'd need, and a piece of strong advice from the only other Vulcan on Challenger. "I understand," Saryn answered quietly, glancing at the younger woman, who could be his daughter, "I do have medical training doctor, and I have my years of experience as well. However..." Saryn paused, raising his eyebrow at the doctor. "I shall be careful and will endeavour to return unhurt."
Thirty minutes later, Saryn was waiting at the transporter for the others to arrive and for the word to beam over to the Romulan vessel. When at last the word came, Saryn couldn't help but wonder on what they were going to find. He stayed at the rear of their small company, staying out of their way as best as possible while keeping alert for rear attacks as he was trained to do as tactical officer.

Robert paced on the bridge of the Challenger as the assault teams departed the ship. He knew they would be there in a matter of seconds but it was those precious seconds that caused him to worry about the success of this mission and his career as a Starship Captain.
Robert needed this attack to succeed if he was to be able to lobby the Earth Starfleet into producing war ships instead of just exploration vessels. He felt strongly in the need for a strong military first, followed by a small scientific and exploration fleet. To him, the Klingons and the Romulans had shown that all aliens aren’t as peaceful as the Vulcans. Deep down inside he doubted that they would ever discover another space going race that wasn’t hostile in the slightest way, and he was going to be the man who made sure that Earth was prepared.
“Status report.” Roberts barked still in his back and forth pace.
“Sir, scanners are having a hard time separating who is who on the ship.” Replied a junior officer sitting in the science officers post.
“Captain, all Alpha Team members are aboard the Romulan ship. We are prepping Bravo right now.” Announced the transporter operator over the ships COM.
Robert leaned over his chair and pushed his reply button, “Than you. Inform me when they are all away. Good luck Bravo team.”
“Aye, aye sir.”
Robert again began to pace, this time he bit hard on his nails. It was a nervous habit that he picked up in high school and he never was able to shake it. Getting out of his robotic like pacing, Robert quickly made his way to the Armory officer’s station and peered over his shoulder.
“Is the Romulan ship still disabled?” Robert asked.
“Yes sir,” Replied the Armory Officer, “But, I’m starting to pick up a warp reaction in the engine room of the ship, at least that’s what appears to be an engine room.”
“As they trying to blow themselves up?” Robert asked sounding alarmed.
“I don’t think so,” Replied the officer in a cool tone of voice, he was the direct contrast to Robert and his uneasy exterior, “It seems they might have brought their engines back online.”
“Shoot them again!” Robert said nearly at a yell.
“I wouldn’t suggest that sir. Sensors show that the Romulan ship probably won’t survive another direct assault. We need to get Bravo Team as close to their engine room as possible and maybe Lt. Kirk can shut down the engines, or Alpha Team needs to get to the bridge and take over the ship. Either way, something needs to happen soon or else we may lose the ship and they assault teams.
Robert rushed over to his chair COM and opened a channel with the transporter room, “Bravo Team, beam over immediately. Transporter operator, get that team as close to the engine room as humanly possible.”
“Sir, I don’t think we can aim that accurately given the constant movement on the ship, we-“
“NOW!” Robert snapped.
“Aye sir.” Replied the transporter operator, “Transporting…”

There were wounded everywhere Saryn looked, though he could not discern their faces in the semi-darkness. They looked humanoid but that was about all his scanner picked up. Radiation levels were garbling his readings, all of the readings he was taking. Occasionally they had to duck because of loose 'hot' wiring coming down from the ceiling. The smell was acrid, but not just that, it was odd. Temperatures were cool, too cool for Saryn's own comforts, but not so that it was cold.
One time, Saryn stopped to examine a corpse that had remained identifyable and the shock of seeing the young man's face made him stumble back as he knelt beside him. "This is a Vulcan," he breathed as he took a few minutes to examine the corpse further, falling behind on the rest of his team, "I do not know what Romulans are or what they look like but this young man most definately is Vulcan."
He got back to his feet after covering the dead man and hurried after his team. "This ship is a trap," he urged, tapping the MACO major on his arm, "there are no Romulans here, only Vulcans and they died quite some time ago. We have to get off this ship."

Kirk felt his palms sweating as he waited in the transporter room with the Marine compliment that was heading over with him. The first team had beamed over and he was hoping that they would be going right afterwards but it wasn’t so. Everybody could feel the tension in the room, but nobody said anything.
“Bravo Team, beam over immediately. Transporter operator, get that team as close to the engine room as humanly possible.” Kirk heard over the ships COM system.
“Sir, I don’t think we can aim that accurately given the constant movement on the ship, we-“
“NOW!” Robert snapped.
“Aye sir.” Replied the transporter operator.
Kirk was first to step up onto the transporter pad, quickly the Marines followed. Each man checked their weapons while Kirk checked his tools. He knew that he probably needed those more than a phase pistol.
“Transporting…”
With in a flash Kirk found himself standing alone in a cloud of smoke.
“Lieutenant?” Called out a Marine.
“I’m here,” Kirk said as he tried to make his way out of the smoke cloud, “Find the main computer station.”
Walking slowly and with his arms outstretched, Kirk did the best he could to not bump into a possible enemy.
“I have something sir.”
“What is it?” Kirk asked still walking with his arms out in front of him.
“It’s a dead Vulcan. Looks like he has been dead for sometime now.”
Kirk began to focus more, and moved at a quicker pace until he found a computer station. He quickly plugged in his PDA up to the computer and began the translation program; sure enough the entire ships systems were in Vulcan.
“I thought this ship was Romulan!” Kirk yelled out.
“It is.” Replied a Marine.
“Not according to the computer,” Kirk said as he fumbled for his communicator, “Jack, Jack come back.”
“I’m a little busy right now, Andy.” Jack replied.
“This ship doesn’t appear to be Romulan, it seems it’s a Vulcan ship.” Kirk said quickly, hearing phase pistol discharges in the background.
“How is that possible?” Jack asked.
“I don’t know,” Kirk replied quickly, “Maybe they were boarded by Romulans and…”
Then it hit him it was a trap. They Romulans must have intercepted Nelson’s transmissions from Earth. Kirk’s mind couldn’t be going any faster at this moment.
“Sergeant, get your men in order!” Kirk shouted, “We need to get back to the Challenger.”
“Bravo team, on me!” The Sergeant yelled.
Kirk rushed back through the smoky engine room and found his way back to the group of Marines. They stood together and waited for Kirk to get out his communicator again.
“What’s going on sir?” Asked the Sergeant.
“It’s a trap,” Kirk said opening up his communicator, “Kirk to transporter room, we need to get everybody back to the Challenger ASAP.”
“Can’t do it sir. Three Romulan ships just dropped out of warp.”
“Get us back, NOW!”
“Can’t do it sir. We are out of range, and Nelson is preparing to leave this sector.”

Despite Rickman's objections on the tactical level, Nelson had still elected to send them by teleporter and so the only hope was that the room of entry wouldn't be guarded. As it was, Rickman was having a harder and harder time objecting to Starfleet orders; many of his superiors back on Earth had been replaced by Fleet men or those willing to support it for whatever reason. For Saryn's presence, Rickman had asked Kirk to provide a phaser with the setting jammed on stun. This probably wasn't helping Saryn's reputation, but there was such a thing as 'friendly fire'.
As it was, the post teleport shudder accompanied the revelation that the killing was pre-done. As they moved through the rather badly damaged ship, Saryn identified one man as a Vulcan. 'I do not know what Romulans are or what they look like but this young man most definately is Vulcan.' Rickman did the only thing he could think of; he pulled out his bayonet and cut into the dead man's arm. The blood was Vulcan green alright. 'This ship is a trap' Saryn said, sounding anxious 'there are no Romulans here, only Vulcans and they died quite some time ago. We have to get off this ship.' 'Did they die before or after we shot the hell out of it? It looks like before given how deep they are in the ship' 'It would be illogical to dispute this now, the ship is clearly a trap' Rickman called up the other MACOs of his team on his helmet mic 'Return to landing point, double time'
Once they were there, Kirk informed them that Nelson was out of range and about to leave. Rickman toggled his mic to Atkins' frequency back on Challenger 'Atkins, stop Nelson. Shoot the [word deleted] if you have to, just stop him' The crackle of static quietly announced that Atkins couldn't hear him. 'Kirk, can you make this ship work before we end up spread across space like so much crap in a fan? They might waste time if they chase Challenger instead of going after this apparently disabled ship' <Kirk>
'Sergeant Smith, whatever happens, we have to buy time. Take everyone to the engine room and try to find anything you can hide near that will mask their signs. I know our scanners are patchy around things like that, so maybe theirs will be too.'

Seeming out of nowhere Major Rickman appeared with the other strike team. The men took up strategic positions through out the engine room, keeping their weapons trained in a near 360 degree fighting circle.
“Kirk, can you make this ship work before we end up spread across space like so much crap in a fan? They might waste time if they chase Challenger instead of going after this apparently disabled ship.”
Kirk took a moment to look over the only working station in the engine room. After a few keystrokes with his universal translator in hand his expression didn’t lend any signs of hope.
“I’m not sure Major,” Kirk replied, “Challenger did one hell of a bang up job disabling an already dead in the water ship. We may be stuck here for awhile.”
Going through the available systems, Kirk noticed that short-range sensors were still working and the Challenger was taking up defensive positions against the attacking Romulan ships.
“Andy,” Kirk heard through his communicator, “Two of the Romulan ships are chasing the Challenger, there is only one Romulan ship left and I think he is about to scan us.”
“I see that.” Kirk said, “You guys, get as close to the warp core as you can. I’m going to try and mask our bio signs with the ships warp field.”
Quickly each of the MACO soldiers rushed down and pressed themselves up against the large warp core. Kirk continued to work on the station in front of him and before long he was satisfied with his work. He too, not wanting to waist any time rushed down and stood as close to the warp core as he could.
“Is this going to work?” Sergeant Smith asked.
“We’ll see.” Kirk said knowing that wasn’t what Smith wanted to hear.

“Sir, Romulan ships moving into an attack pattern.” Robert heard from the CON.
“Get us out of here.” Robert ordered.
“What about our strike teams?” Asked the helmsman.
“No time. We need to get us out of this hostile area.” Robert ordered and waited only seconds for his orders to register, “Evasive maneuvers.”
“Aye sir.” Replied the helmsman.
The Challenger rolled and banked hard through phaser fire as she began to flee from the two Romulan ships. The Challenger did the best she could to try and avoid getting hit, but a few shots hit their mark on the ships main hull section.
“What’s our heading sir?” Asked the helmsman as small sparks erupted from a station in the back of the bridge.
“Back to the nebula, we should shake ‘em in there.”
Just as before the Challenger went off the sensor grid as she entered the nebula and the Romulans broke off their pursuit knowing they no longer had the upper hand.
“All stop.” Robert ordered.
“Aye sir, all stop.”
Robert watched the main view screen and through the thick clouds of the nebula he could just barely make out the two Romulan ships heading back toward the disabled cargo ship.
“What now sir?” Asked one of the officers in the back of the bridge.
Robert stood motionless; his face was pale with fear. As much of a hard man as he was to deal with, he was more scared now than he had ever been. Nobody had ever tried to kill him before and he felt personally attacked, his mind raced as he tried to come to grips with that reality.
“Sir?”

Hesitating only briefly, Saryn stepped forward, holstering the phase pistol he had taken out earlier. "Are weapons operational?" he querried, raising an eyebrow at both Kirk and Rickman. It surprised him that neither had thought of the fact that a tactical officer was present in their party. And while his reputation was second to none at the moment, Saryn believed he could still be helpful.
"Commander Kirk, if you would be so kind to assist me," Saryn continued, "then perhaps we can get this vessel back to operational status. At least insofar as weapons and defensive systems are concerned."
The Vulcan believed that if they could draw attention away from Challenger, the ship wouldn't be forced to retreat. Yet they had a lot to learn from this vessel; it didn't look that advanced yet in another way it did look more sophisticated. He glanced meningfully at the chief engineer. "Can you fix this ship?" he asked again, "we are bound to get casualties but if we can reduce the risk of becoming a casualty, we can increase our chances on success. At this point the odds of us succeeding are one in twohundred-thousand fourhundred sixty one point zero seven....against."

'At this point the odds of us succeeding are one in twohundred-thousand fourhundred sixty one point zero seven....against.' 'You just made that up' one of the Marines objected 'I assure you, I did not' Saryn replied 'Nobody can do that so quickly, even if they are a Vulcan' 'Nonetheless it is the case' 'How do we know?' 'Mr Khan, this is not helping! If I want your opinion I will ask for it!' Rickman snapped 'Regardless of what the statistical chance of anything is, unless we can make them think we are not here, they will destroy us. The shields would be broken or else the ship wouldn't be dead; likely the same for the weapons. It lost in apparently two fights, half of it is missing, none of us can easily work it and there are three Romulan ships hovering around just itching to blow us up. They set a trap and we fell for it. If we can convince them it didn't work then they might board and then we can fight them off here. They wouldn't blow up a ship with a lot of their own men on because if they were inclined to do so then they wouldn't be an effective fighting force. We need engines to escape. After that, we can regroup and think of a plan. You're the Challenger's tactical officer, Saryn. Use some tactical sense.' Rickman began to suspect more that Saryn's previous massacre of civilians was not out of character and due to unforseen circumstances. It seemed to be a character trait to resort to violence too quickly.
'Mr Kirk, is there any chance at all of fixing this in the next few minutes?' Rickman asked 'If not then are there any shuttles we can run to the nebula in?'

'You're the Challenger's tactical officer, Saryn. Use some tactical sense.'
Saryn resisted the urge to glare at the bluntness of the marine. "That was exactly what I was aiming to do major Rickman," he answered calmly, "and by having the defensive systems fixed, we can at least defend ourselves against the other Romulan vessels. If you could spare me one of your marines, then at least I am not venturing out on my own. I will stay in contact and report on my progress."
The Vulcan nodded towards Kirk, who had remained silent. "Lieutenant, your engineering insight would be extremely welcome. I know tactical systems but I fear I know nothing about engineering. You could enlighten me on the subject..."
As he walked away, he cast a final look upon Rickman. "Your opinion of me will never change will it marine?" he asked neutrally, "I sense your distrust, there is no point in hiding it. Tell me, what will it take to regain it? I am aware of the fact that you had my phase pistol jammed on stun, but it was hardly necessary. I will not use it until I am forced to defend myself or a crewmate." Without waiting for the answer, he walked on, conscious of the fact that this ship could be further littered with traps for them to be wary of.

Kirk watched as the situation was going from bad to worst. Not only was there Romulan ships circling the crippled Vulcan cargo ship, but now personalities were starting to butt heads.
“Mr. Kirk, is there any chance at all of fixing this in the next few minutes?” Rickman asked “If not then are there any shuttles we can run to the nebula in?”
“I’ll know in a few minutes.” Kirk said as he continued to work with the universal translator still in his hand.
The best that he knew was that with his extension of the warp core radiation they were able to hide from the scanning Romulan ships. Kirk knew he had to do everything subtly because too many ships systems coming on or performing tasks at once would bring sudden and unwanted attention to the away teams.
Just beyond him Rickman and Saryn continued to bicker back and forth about tactics and the ability of the ship to be able to put up a reasonable defense. Kirk finally noticed that Jack had been able to make his way down to the engine room unnoticed.
“I wish you could convert this for me.” Kirk said looking back and forth from his PDA to the control station.
“This is Vulcan,” Jack said, “Just do this…” He pushed a few buttons on the PDA and suddenly all the console’s language suddenly appeared in English.
“Thanks,” Kirk said and then things started to become clear to him, “We have problems.”
“What problems?” Rickman asked.
“Weapons are offline, it seems Nelson did a bang up job disabling a derelict ship. From what I can see main power is offline and life support is probably going to fail with in the hour.” Kirk said looking at the away team.
“Any good news?” Jack asked.
Kirk looked hard back at the read out and then replied, “Yes. It seems there are two escape pods left. I think we could use one as a sensor decoy, while one of us pilots the other pod back to the Challenger. It’s a long shot but it seems to be the only option we have.”
“Where are the Romulan ships right now.” Rickman asked.
Looking back down at the console, Kirk bunched in a few commands and finally was able to come up with a star chart, “We still have one Romulan ship on us, the other two are heading out of the sector. I would guess they are going back to their ready positions just in case the Challenger attacks again.”
“So, who’s going to pilot the escape pod?” Jack asked.
“Good question,” Kirk said, “Any takers?”

The fact that this ship's weapons were all down confirmed Rickman's thoughts that they wouldn't last a minute in a fight. Saryn hadn't waited for the answer of what it would take to regain Rickman's trust, which may have been just as well since what was needed was beyond the ability of anyone he had ever met.
The escape pod scenario was now their best hope, and knowing this wasn't making things any easier. 'So, who’s going to pilot the escape pod?' 'Good question. Any takers?' Rickman spoke for all his Marines and their pride; 'Neither my men nor I can pilot anything, least of all a Vulcan ship. I'm sorry, but it's going to have to be one of you fleeters'

“Neither my men nor I can pilot anything, least of all a Vulcan ship. I'm sorry, but it's going to have to be one of you fleeters”
Damn, Kirk thought. He knew it was going to come down to either himself or Jack. Kirk didn’t trust Saryn enough to send him out alone to try and reach the ship, let alone hold a phase pistol.
“I’ll do it,” Kirk said reluctantly, “I just need to calibrate the sensor output on the second pod before I go.”
The group fell silent now that somebody had volunteered to take on the overwhelmingly dangerous task. Kirk felt like a condemned man as he walked past Jack and the Marines to last two escape pods. He couldn’t help but feel as if he was getting the short end of the stick and to top it off the last two escape pods happened to just be near the engineering section.
Grabbing a hold of the hatch, Kirk twisted open the door and just as he was getting ready to step in and start his work he felt a hand grab a hold of his arm. Turning his head to see whom it was and he found himself face to face with Jack.
“Good luck,” Jack said, “I know I can’t talk you out of this now.”
“You sure as hell can try.” Kirk said in a joking manner.
Jack smiled and left Kirk to do his work. As he processed on the sensor output he found himself quietly wondering what was going to happen once he left the ship. Was his trick going to work, would he be taken prisoner by the Romulans or just blown into space dust? The dark thoughts never stopped but Kirk worked through them.
“I’m ready.” Kirk said as he stepped out of the second escape pod, “What I need is somebody to launch the first escape pod, and once the pod has reached a good distance the sensors on the escape pod will simulate a decloaking ship. Then I need somebody to launch me back toward the nebula that Challenger attacked from. With any luck the Romulans will take the bait and investigate the sensor readings.”
Kirk moved slowly and timidly to the second escape pod, his own personal lifeboat. He knew that not only his life, but also the lives of these men were all on his shoulders. As he sat inside the escape pod he thought about the sensor readings, the modifications he made and prayed that he did it right. There was no second chance, this was do or die time. I guess this is what war is about, Kirk thought to himself as he sealed himself into the escape pod.
“Lets do it.” Kirk said into communicator.

Meanwhile Saryn had found his way, albeit slowly, towards the vessel's bridge; or rather what he assumed served as the bridge. The space was sparsely furnished, and little room for seats but all sides were covered with panels and consoles.
The Vulcan walked over to the nearest one, tucking his phase pistol away again. He was still somewhat chagrined over the fact that as Tactical Officer he was stuck with a weapon jammed on stun, even though he could understand the MACO's point of view, especially since last mission.
Now, however he was facing a new problem. As he glanced at the consoles, he discovered that he wasn't looking at Vulcan script at all. There were indeed symbols that resembled Vulcan, and some actually were Vulcan, but most of them weren't even close. Taking out his scanner, he used the translation program Logan had come up with, but it wasn't of much help. Momentary at a loss, Saryn stood staring at the nearest console, trying to decipher the instructions. Then he decided he needed to jump into action and get at least the ship's hull plating back up. (or whatever Romulan vessels seemed to use)
After what seemed hours, the Vulcan tactical officer finally managed to re-activate the defensive systems, but weapons remained down. Frowning, Saryn pulled out his communication's device. "Saryn to Kirk.." No answer. "Saryn to Logan..."
"Logan here, go ahead Saryn."
"I have established minimal shielding but I am unable to reactivate weapons. Please advise. The instructions are confusing and interesting to say the least. Some symbols are indeed Vulcan but others clearly are not."

Kirk sat in the escape pod and felt his heart racing. He had never had to do anything so dangerous before and he hoped that after this he would never have to again. Waiting was the worst part for Kirk; he was a man who wanted to just get things over with.
“First escape pod launched.” Jack said over the communications system, “Short range sensors are showing that the Romulan ships are going after the pod. Ready Andy?”
“As ready as I’ll ever be.” Kirk replied as he waited for the sudden jerk of the thrusters.
Then it came, the jolt of the ejection system sending the escape pod out away from the damaged ship. Quickly, Kirk set course for the nebula in hopes that the Challenger was still waiting there. Kirk had hoped that Nelson was waiting for the perfect time to come in rescue them; that or he had already fled the system. Kirk hoped it wasn’t the latter.
Suddenly things started to beep inside the escape pod and even though Kirk couldn’t read what was going on, he had a damn good idea of what it was. Peering into the star scope, his suspicions were confirmed as the small onboard directional sensors showed a large ship heading his way.
“Great.” Kirk said to himself, and then he proceeded to push the small thrusters on the escape pod as hard as they could go.
While still working with his small universal translator, Kirk had managed to adjust the subspace radio to the Starfleet frequency. He hoped and prayed that they were there and listening.
“Captain Nelson, this is Lieutenant Kirk, need assistance. Please respond.”
There was no reply.

Kirk was brave going into the pod, leading Rickman to wonder if there was a Starfleet medal for bravery/foolhardiness. But then again, Kirk might end up receiving whatever the equivalent of a purple heart is. Post-humous award ceremonies were the worst in Rickman's experience; the recipient never gave a good speech. Also, trying to validate someone's life by how they died seemed somewhat misguided.
As the Romulan ships began to follow the first pod, Kirk's one was released. As they watched on the screen, one shape began to head for Kirk's pod. 'He's gonna die' Logan pointed out 'What do the letters mean?' Rickman asked 'is the other ship Challenger or not?' 'All the labels just say 'unidentified'. Even the Romulan ships' 'Oh' At that moment, the shape stopped chasing Kirk's pod and turned for the disabled vessel they were in. The other two did likewise. Logan's communicator beeped 'Saryn to Logan...' 'Logan here, go ahead Saryn.' 'I have established minimal shielding but I am unable to reactivate weapons. Please advise. The instructions are confusing and interesting to say the least. Some symbols are indeed Vulcan but others clearly are not.' 'I think I know why they're coming at us then' Rickman volunteered Logan looked like he did too. 'Those shields aren't going to last long, are they?' Rickman asked. He set his helmet microphone to Kirk's frequency 'Kirk, how do we hide our lifesigns?' No reply; he was out of range and without the pod's frequency there was no chance of reaching him. 'Logan, we're dead in the water and I can't reach Kirk. In a few minutes those three Romulan ships are going to spread us across space like so many pieces of tinned meat. Any ideas?' <Logan>

Back on board the Challenger, Robert sat in the command chair with a look of disbelief on his face. He appeared to not be the man he was before. The arrogant, loud-mouthed façade he put up in the face of his peers had been shaken and destroyed at the first sign of danger.
“Sir, what are we going to do? We can’t just leave them there to be captured.” The junior officer manning the armory station said.
“Or killed.” Said yet another junior officer.
Robert sat quietly, his eyes darted back and forth quickly to each officer. Suddenly a beeping started on the bridge that took all the officers attention away from Robert. The science officer quickly was able to identify the craft through a small break in the nebula as an escape pod.
“We have an escape pod heading our way sir.” Announced the science officer.
There was no response from Robert. Further investigation by the science officer showed it appeared to be a human.
“I’m getting a faint signal…” Said the communications officer as she pressed her earpiece down some more, “I’m putting it on the speakers.”
“Captain Nelson, this is Lieutenant Kirk, need assistance. Please respond.” Came over the speakers, heavy in static.
“Opening the shuttle bay doors.” Ordered the Armory officer.
“The escape pod should be docked with in a few minutes.” Said the Helm officer.
“Security to the shuttle bay and get the doctor up here at once.” Ordered the Armory officer.
All eyes were on the main view screen as the escape pod made its final approach to the Challenger. Just beyond the escape pod was a single Romulan ship, its pursuit course seemed to show more of a curiosity than a sense of urgency.
“Can you get a lock on that ship?” Asked the Helm officer.
“Don’t know,” was the reply, but after a few keystrokes the man smiled, “I have been able to establish a lock on the target.”
“Do we fire sir?” Asked the Communications officer.
Robert still sat quietly as if nothing had been going on around him. Behind him the doors opened up and the ships doctor came onto the bridge.
“What seems to be the problem?” Asked the doctor.
“The Captain, he’s unresponsive.” Communications officer.
Moving quickly the doctor rushed to Roberts side, checking his eyes, and his response to any stimulus but nothing. He exhaled loudly as he now knew what was going on.
“What’s the matter with him?”
“He has what they used to call back in the 20th, shell shock.” Replied the doctor.
Out in front of the Nebula sat the Romulan ship; she dared not to enter the nebula, leaving the escape pod free to dock with Challenger. Quietly the doctor helped Robert up to his feet and walked him off the bridge.
“Shuttle bay to the bridge, we have the escape pod.”
The bridge was silent as they waited to see who it was that was inside the escape pod. They were also fixed on the Romulan ship that sat just outside the nebula.
“Bridge, this is Lt. Kirk we have a situation on our hands.”
“Understood sir. We could use you on the bridge.”
“I’m on my way.”

"What do you mean not Vulcan?" Jack said not waiting for a response," the access panel is all Vulcan. It seems that the Romulans have had this vessel for quite a while."
The thought of keeping dead bodies around for the possibility of using them made Jack shudder in disgust. Even in times of war, respect for the dead was honored.
'Logan, we're dead in the water and I can't reach Kirk. In a few minutes those three Romulan ships are going to spread us across space like so many pieces of tinned meat. Any ideas?'
"I don't have enough time to get weapons back online," Jack replied," like you said we're dead in the water. Our only hope lies in Andy and unfornately in Nelson's too."

Kirk rushed up the to bridge and when he arrived he noticed that Captain Nelson was missing. He moved quickly to the Chief Armory Officer; the officer who asked him to come to the bridge.
“Where’s Captain Nelson?” Kirk asked.
“He has been relieved of Command by the Doctor.” The Armory Officer replied.
“Who’s in Command then?” Kirk asked.
The Armory officer looked around the bridge quickly and noticed that Kirk was the highest-ranking officer now on the bridge, “You are sir.”
The words hit Kirk hard, I’m in command, he thought.
“Sir, we have a situation that needs to be addressed.”
“What is it?” Kirk asked.
“There is a single Romulan ship sitting just outside the Nebula. I think it is waiting for your escape pod to come back out so it can destroy it.”
“Are her weapons armed?” Kirk asked moving forward to the command chair.
“It’s hard to say,” Replied the Armory officer, “We are getting sporadic readings from our sensors because of the nebula cloud.”
“Only one way to find out.” Kirk said to himself, “Launch the escape pod back out into the nebula. I want you to establish a remote connection with the craft so we can steer it from the bridge.”
”Aye sir.” Replied the officer.
Kirk continued to watch the Romulan ship as it sat motionless in front of him on the main view screen. He didn’t know if what he was planning was the right thing, but what he did know was that his friends were in danger and he intended to rescue them.
“Escape pod is away sir.”
“Good,” Kirk said standing up, “Once the Romulan ship makes for a pursuit course I want us to engage. Target the ships engines and weapons systems first.”
“Aye sir.”
Kirk watched and waited. Suddenly the escape pod appeared out in front of the Challenger; with in seconds it was no longer in the nebula and was now streaking past the Romulan ship.
Just as Kirk had hoped, the Romulan ship took the bait and was slowly turning to get onto the escape pod’s tail and start its pursuit.
“Wait until they fire on the escape pod.” Kirk said as he stood next to the Armory Officer.
“Aye sir.”
“Helm, one quarter impulse.” Kirk ordered.
“Aye sir.”
This all had to happen at the right time, Kirk knew that in only a matter of seconds they would clear the nebula and be completely exposed to the Romulan sensors. He watched the view screen as the nebula cloud began to get thinner. The clouds parted and Kirk could see the Romulan ship clearly, then it happened. The Romulan ship in a single shot fired on the escape pod, destroying it.
“Now, fire.” Kirk ordered.
The Armory officer didn’t hesitate, he fired all the weapons he could in a single burst. Kirk watched on the main view screen as phase blasts struck the Romulan ship on the by what appeared to be it’s warp nacelles. The two torpedoes, taking just a bit longer smashed into the main hull of the ship, causing two large explosions.
“Direct hit.”
“Helm, full impulse. Move into range of our transporters.” Kirk ordered, “Also, send out a message all channels, Romulan ships stand down.” “Aye sir.”
Kirk watched the main view screen and hoped that he was able to strike fear in the other Romulan ships. This had been the fastest ship on ship victory he had ever been in, he just hoped it was enough to force the Romulans away so he could pick up the rest of the team.

Kirk watched on the viewing screen as the two Romulan ships halted their scanning of the second escape pod and came about on a direct intercept with the Challenger.
“Status report on those ships.” Kirk ordered.
“Their weapons appear to be armed.” Replied the Armory Officer.
“Helm, continue on heading.” Kirk ordered while he looked down at the buttons attached to the command chair. It took him a moment but he found a COM channel to the transporter room, “Transporter room, once we get into range lock on and transport our crew back as quick as you can.”
“Aye sir.” Replied the transporter chief.
“Helm, we need to maintain a close proximity to that cargo ship, we need to make sure we get all of our crew back.”
“Aye sir.”
Looking back up at the view screen, Kirk could see that both the Challenger and the two Romulan ships were starting to get into their engagement range. It wouldn’t be long now before shots were fired.
“Sir, we are nearly in weapons range. Shall I target the lead ship?”
“Not yet.” Kirk said hoping that now this situation had turned into a stand off that he might be able to use diplomacy to rectify this situation.
“Sir, might I remind you that we are at war with the Romulans and they do out number us two to one.” Said the Armory Officer.
He was right and the truth suddenly sunk in. Normally he was sitting in the engine room, far from these life and death decisions. Now, he was sitting on the bridge and the lives of the crew depended on him making the tough calls.
“Lock all weapons on the lead ship’s starboard warp nacelle. Slow to one quarter impulse power.” Kirk ordered.
“Aye sir.”
He knew it was going to be one hell of a shot, but if they were to survive this fight they were going to need to even the odds a bit more.
“We are closing in on transporter range.” Announced the helm officer.
“Sir, we are now in weapons range of the enemy ships. Shall I fire?”
This was the moment that Kirk never thought he would have to face. Does he fight or make the hard charge to rescue his crewmembers while at the same time taking heavy damage from the Romulan ships.

From the crudely repaired viewscreen, Saryn could discern that the Challenger was ready to attack. The images were distorted, and difficult to pick out, but the element was there. The Vulcan prayed that they wouldn't get fired upon, being mistaken for the enemy. However without communications it was hard to contact the ship to let them know which Romulan vessel they were.
He worked steadily, so far he had partially gotten the Romulan variant of hull plating back up and he had phase cannons, or what passed for them. However he didn't have any guidance to aim them with, if he would use them, he would be firing blind and risk hitting Challenger; and he wasn't quite ready to take that risk. Especially not after his most recent experiences with weapons.
Sighing, he knelt back down to the deck to duck under the console he'd been working on. "I have to fix this," he murmured, "it is the only chance we have." He pulled the wiring down from under the console and stared at them for a long time. All he saw was wires, he had no idea what exactly to do with them. Closing his eyes, he tried to remember the basic engineering training he had received to fix medical consoles in sickbay while he was in medical school.
Randomly, he pulled the wires apart and began reconnecting them on pure chance. Then the console beeped, and Saryn crawled back to his feet. "Ah, we have intraship communications now. Well that is a start, now to see how we regain our guidance systems so that we can help Challenger." He pulled out his communicator. "Saryn to Logan and Rickman. We have minimal weapons power but nothing to guide our shots with. Hull plating is online so at least we are protected. I am now working on regaining ship to ship communications. Saryn out."
With that, he ducked back under the console, completely oblivious to the intruder that had silently emerged on the other side of the bridge. The Romulan snuck up to him and stood quietly to Saryn's side, observing him as the Vulcan worked with all his concentration on his set task. Even more quiet, the Romulan picked up one of the Vulcan's tools which lay strewn about him and raised it up into the air. Saryn never knew what struck him and a second later he lay sprawled under the console.
The Romulan tossed the spanner aside, wiped his hands on Saryn's tunic and walked out. "This is Rajin calling boarding troups," he whispered into his communicator, "I have taken the Vulcan out, what is your status?"

"Saryn to Logan and Rickman. We have minimal weapons power but nothing to guide our shots with. Hull plating is on line so at least we are protected. I am now working on regaining ship to ship communications. Saryn out."
"Major, I'm going to reroute the weapons array through here," Jack said," I hope you're a good shot."
Jack's remarked must have irked the MACO, but he didn't respond. Instead he took control of the console and began to aim.
"Commander, weapons control is gone, I no longer have control," Rickman said.
"Logan to Saryn what happened?... Saryn please respond."
Jack quickly began to worry about Saryn. His initial scans told him that no Romulan was on board, but maybe he had missed something.
"I'm going to the bridge and see what happened?" Jack said not giving it another thought," Major try to reestablish control."

Jack doubted that the MACO would be able to do this, but at least it would keep him occupied. He didn't like the feeling of doing nothing and he was sure that he would feel the same way. With pistol in hand, he ran all the way to the bridge. The first thing he noticed was that Saryn was on the floor bleeding and a man at helm control.
"Freeze and turn around slowly," Jack shouted ready to fire at any given moment. Maybe it was the lights on the bridge or the fact the he would have most likely killed the man, Jack was slow in discharging his weapon when he saw the Romulan move. A second later he was off the ship. Cursing himself for letting him go, Jack tended to Saryn.
"Saryn, can you stand?" Jack asked.

Saryn woke when Jack shook him and he suppressed a moan. "I can try sir," he answered, somewhat groggily, "I must apologize.."
"For what?" Logan answered, "for getting clouted over the head? That could've happened to anyone."
"I am the tactical officer," the Vulcan retorted, while leaning heavily on the Human communications chief. "I am experiencing disorientation, what happened?"
Briefly, Logan explained what he thought had expired before his arrival. "Yes I had communications operational." Sadly, he glanced at the now ruined console, "had would be the correct statement indeed. Now, I fear I must start all over again. You are a communications specialist. Your assistance would be appreciated. We can...watch eachother's back?"
Raising an eyebrow, Saryn sazed at the younger man. "However my phase pistol seems to be jammed on stun level three, I cannot change it to a heavier setting."
