Roz walked down the hallway with Karynn. They were heading for Roz's quarters as there would be nothing to make the mental link to what had happened to Karynn in the past while. They went inside and sat down on the couch. They looked at each other and the room for a while and then Roz broke the silence.
Roz: I'm getting something to drink. I'm getting a brandy, what do you want?
Karynn: Do you have any coffee?
Roz: After what you've been through, you need something considerably stronger. I'm getting you a brandy.
Karynn sighed and smiled. It was impossible trying to argue with Roz when she had her mind set on something. Roz went and got two tumblers with brandy in them and handed one to Karynn. Roz downed hers quickly and felt it burn down her throat while Karynn sipped at hers.
Roz: I promised you that we would share some sad stories so why don't you start?

Meanwhile back in sickbay.
Nova pondered for a long while as if his mind was some where else, then taking the coffee in one hand and rubbing his chin with the other said,” Chess…….Yes now that is an honorable game. One which I have become quite good at really and I find that Vulcan’s present a formidable challenge.”
Nova took a long sip of the coffee, and then realized that S'reena had already stated her knowledge of his chess abilities.
Nova told her that he had studied many chess and other similar game greats as far back as earth’s 20th Century Champion Eddie Fisher. She acknowledged the fact she already knew from his Starfleet record which she had made a point to look over as any good officer would.
“I believe a Section 47 wide tournament would be an excellent idea and give me a chance to mingle with officers I don’t normally have the chance too,” he said just before they were interrupted by strange sounds coming from the far side of sickbay.
Their attention turned to the Doctor.
After several days in sickbay with Nova there, the Doctor sat half-slouched at his desk, complaining about who knows what. The doctor had passed grouchy an hour ago, had rounded into irascible, and was sliding into surly at full steam. He was also lapsing into his incredibly annoying mumbling to himself.
“I tell you Commander that if I am not released soon I might start talking to myself. Please find Admiral McCormick and ask her to come and see me ASAP,” Nova said with insistent in his voice.
“I understand and will do as you ask. I am pleased that you like the tournament idea and I will put the idea into action. I must now return to my duties.” S'reena stated calmly and turns to disappear out of the sickbay door.

S'reena walked away and while passing Salek, she patted the doctor on his shoulder. "No worries," she told him, "he will be out soon, though you will be facing a challenge." She smiled at her Vulcan friend. "I am going to organize a chess competition, and from his records I gathered that you will face quite a challenge in the section admiral. Now, I better go find Admiral McCormick before he will go find her himself. Though, you will be better off releasing him soon." With a grin, she walked away and went to find the Third Fleet Commander.

Roz had done more for Karynn than the best psychologist Starfleet Medical could have provided. Her mix of friendly humor, no pity allowed demeanor and sharing her own tragic past had Karynn feeling back to normal... almost. There was one remaining horror yet to face.
Karynn had avoided Nova on purpose. Now, he was ordering her to see him. The all-consuming guilt she felt was enticing her to disobey a direct order for the first time in her career.
Before facing him, Karynn prepared by using the Vulcan meditation techniques she'd learned long ago. They had helped her deal with the death of her fiancé and she called on them to help her now.
Lighting a candle and burning the proper incense, Karynn sat on the floor of her quarters upon a pillow. She wore the traditional, loose-fitting garb of a Vulcan sage - a silky robe with pajama-like trousers underneath. The ambience of the dimly lit room lent to the restful feel she so desperately needed. She let herself sink into a near trance-like state.
Suddenly, there was the interruption of the door chime. Her Vulcan mediation teacher would have been disappointed in Karynn for she quickly went from feeling tranquil to irritated.
"Who is it?" she demanded of the still closed door.
"It's the Section Admiral," came the reply.
Panic ensued as Karynn jumped to her feet. Her quarters were untidy, she was untidy and worst of all, she didn't feel prepared. She spun around trying to ascertain what to straighten as the door chimed impatiently.
"I'm... uhhh... coming!" she blurted, trying to sound calm and upbeat. She took a quick look in the mirror, did some hurried adjustments to her loose-hanging, auburn locks and, cursing the Vulcans for making their meditation robes out of such thin material, she opened the door.
Nova's form filled the doorway menacingly with his six foot, two inch frame. “May I enter?” his bass voice rumbled, low and forceful.
Summoning all her wits, Karynn managed to respond. “Certainly,” and she motioned for him to come in. “I do want to first apologize for the appearance of my quarters… and myself.”
“No need to. You’re off-duty. And I’m here unofficially.” Nova moved about slowly, studying the décor of her quarters, seeming to see them for the first time. The last time he’d visited here, he was under the influence, of the vampiral virus. There was a lot he didn’t remember clearly for the virus Karynn had infected him with made his memory foggy. He had only one clear memory of the entire incident. And that is what brought him here.
Karynn watched him anxiously, trying to read his motives for being here. A thousand things ran through her mind, none of them good. Perhaps if she faced the subject head-on, this awkward feeling would pass quicker.
“Admiral, I want to assure you I was on my way to see you in sickbay as per your request when I…
“When you thought you’d stop by your quarters for a quick, Vulcan meditation ritual,” he finished for her. “I recognize the scent of your incense, Karynn. If I’m not mistaken, it’s Montura lichen flower from the Northern K’tachran mountain region.”
“Yes, ... yes it is,” Karynn said, impressed by his knowledge, “It’s an unpopular scent with most humanoids but I’ve always found its spicy pungency appealing.”
Nova plopped himself down upon Karynn’s floor pillow, closed his eyes and breathed in the aroma rising in small, smoky curls. Without opening his eyes, he asked, “Are there any rules against meditating for two?”
When Karynn didn’t respond, Duke playfully opened one eye and looked at her. His expression, along with the gangly look of his long legs crossed ‘Indian’ style on her pillow caused her to smile. She picked up a pillow from a nearby chair, tossed it on the floor opposite Duke and plunked down.
“No rules against it that I’m aware of,” she replied, relieved he was intent on making light of the entire vampire affair.
“Good,” he said, and he closed both eyes again. “Proceed.”
After the ritual, Karynn and Duke sat for hours and talked. They talked about everything. Everything but the one thing they needed to discuss. Two hours passed before they realized it and Nova rose to leave. McCormick, intensely wanting to put the subject to rest, tried broaching it one last time.
“Admiral, I really do want to apologize for everything that happened. I know you know that it was the virus… but I wanted it to be clear that it wasn’t really me acting as I did.”
Duke turned to her and with noticeable disappointment in his voice said, “I know. Too bad.” He then winked at her, smiled and left.
